and he says:' Well I have
done that from my youth up I've

kept the
commandments. What lack I yet?'

explained to him what he lacked.

He was a very selfish young man.

riches for himself.

We were eleven children, we
were brought up in the church.

And we were all
taught obedience.

The obedience of the law.

And some of us had a hard
time, some had an easy time.

I liked obedience so I
didn't have a hard time.

And my father was so
strong with us children.

If we disobeyed, he would get
angry he would be impatient he

would be irritated and we
would be blamed for his sin.

And you know
that's what people do.

When parents get angry with
their children they blame the

children.

Right.

And the poor children carry
their own guilt of disobedience

and the father's guilt.

How sad.

And when we think the Bible
tells us that God is love and

He tells us in Jeremiah 31
verse 'I have loved you with an

everlasting love and
therefore I've drawn you with

loving-kindness. '

So it is the example of loving
kindness that God sets for us

But it's God shedding
his love abroad in our hearts

that helps us to love
others and show that experience.

But if children grow up in
a home where the father is not

doing that they don't understand
and so they only understand

the obedience of law

when I surrender my total being

they weren't big like my

But I had resentment towards my
husband because he was selfish

with our son.

So I didn't
realize I was sinning.

I thought it was just his
selfishness and I blamed him.

And you know it is so easy
to blame our heart's sins on

someone else.

But it was more of a religious

And then we were missionaries
for ten years and then I came

home from the mission field,
I visited my parents, my father

was seventy-eight at the time,
he had a heart problem, he knew

he could drop dead any minute.

And here he was, he still had
an eighteen year old boy at home

who was giving him more trouble
than all the other ten children

put together.

And he realized
something is wrong.

He knew only the over comer
would be in heaven and he was

not over coming.

And he was running scared.

what we've been doing.

We were ignorant of the
righteousness that comes from

But I went home determined

And I started to study and
at first it was hard, I was a

surface reader, I had
read my Bible many times.

But I had not
stopped to study it.

the Bible just
became a living book to me.

alone, I want to spend all my

And I found the answers and then
I prayed 'Now Lord send me back

And I just want to share
some of the examples today,

I will go into the

examples today of how Jesus
helped me to understand my lost

condition.

Let me ask you first,

your father was
deceived about his condition.

He thought by being so strict
and such a strict disciplinarian

and having a bunch of rules,
he didn't realize you can't have
00:10:40.94\00:10:44.28
rules without
relationship and be saved.
00:10:44.31\00:10:48.22
Were other people in the Bible
that were like your father?

Were there people
in the Bible' examples?

Yeah. Look at Nicodemus.

All right.

Ok.

Nicodemus was coming to find
out if Jesus was the messiah.

Jesus looked into his heart
and said 'Nicodemus you have a

thought of a kingdom too pure

My husband was a minister,
he hadn't understood it either.

And that's why he
couldn't share it with me.

And so Jesus explained to
Nicodemus, 'You must be born of

water and of the spirit. '

And there are many, many of us
who don't understand, you must

be born again.

How do you
experience that new birth?

In order to be born again
you must first yield yourself

completely to Christ.

Because how can God create a
new heart and a new mind if you

don't yield the old one?

And that's hard for people.

It's hard for some of us, we
don't realize that, I remember

when I had returned to college
at the age of thirty, how I

thought I was reading where
Jesus said: 'Why do you call me

good? No one is
good except God. '

And I thought ' Wait
a minute, you are God,
00:12:40.49\00:12:42.53
why would you say that?'
00:12:42.57\00:12:43.66
He was testing the heart
to see if this man was merely

buttering him up if you
will, or if he really saw him
00:12:47.07\00:12:50.37
as the messiah.

Now the Lord did show me that
night, I prayed and said 'Father

You've got to show me,
everyone's always told me what

a good person I am and
if I'm not good show me.

And you know something?

For eight hours, from
ten o'clock at night till six

in the morning, God
gave me a review of my life.

It was amazing and He
showed me the wrong motivations,

the selfish motivations,
just seeking approval from men

if you will and in many
instances trying to look good.

We don't see ourselves as
not being 'good' but there is no

goodness except from God.

Right.

But aren't
we... the part of this

surrender that you're talking

about, this yielding, when
we go to the Lord, it's not just

saying, just simply saying
'Lord help me' but I need to be

filled with Your power.

Yes we need to be born again.

To be born again and to be
filled with the Holy Spirit.

That's right, the Bible puts
it this way in Ephesians 4:22

' Put off your old nature which
belongs to your former manner

of life and is corrupt through
deceitful lust and be renewed

in the spirit of your mind and
put on the new nature created

after the likeness of God in
true righteousness and holiness.

And so it is a new
creation, it is supernatural.

virgins, I never understood

about the Holy Spirit.

And, you know, so they didn't
have oil, they didn't have

enough oil, but
what does it really mean?

Let's for our viewers who may
not be familiar with that story

just kind of recap that story.

It says: 'Then shall the kingdom

lamps and went forth to meet the

and five were foolish.

and took no oil with them.

This is the area that
helped me to understand.

You see, the lamp
is the word of God.

lamp unto your feet,

That's right.

And they were inviting the Holy
Spirit to help them understand

the word of God.

We always did that.

Yes.

Ok, but they were also to take
oil in their little vessels.

In the Bible what
does the vessel represent?

The vessel is us.

That's right.

It's us and the five foolish
virgins had neglected to invite

the Holy Spirit into their life.

So the oil is the symbol of the
Holy Spirit and the five wise

virgins invited, they went
out with their lamp and with the

extra oil in their vessels
so it was asking the Holy Spirit

'Come into my life, let me
be led by Your spirit Father.

God fill me with
Your spirit continually. '

Yes.
00:16:43.63\00:16:44.60
But those five foolish virgins
who thought they were, I'm sure

they thought that they were like
your father, like your husband

they thought they were ready,
but they went out, they had

a lamp with them but they
had no oil in their lamps.

So it was a head knowledge,
we would compare that to a head

knowledge of the scripture but
not relying on the power of the

Holy Spirit.

That's right.

And so I learnt this
lesson from this parable.

And what a difference it made in
my life, finally understanding

what I needed.

And then there was another
person that Jesus talked about.

The man who came to the wedding
feast without the wedding

honor to Him for the marriage of
the Lamb has come and His wife

has made herself ready. '

'And to her was granted that
she should be arrayed in fine

linen, clean and white for the
fine linen is the righteousness

of saints. '

The fine linen is the
righteousness of saints.

When we surrender ourselves
to Christ, He works in us His

character.

And that is the fine linen that
He wants the church to have.
