Hi and welcome to Issues and Answers 00:00:31.09\00:00:33.43 My name is Melissa Summers 00:00:33.46\00:00:34.98 and thank you so much for joining us. Now today our issue 00:00:35.02\00:00:38.48 is a very serious issue. We are talking about cancer. The Lord 00:00:38.51\00:00:42.66 has blessed us with two very special guests 00:00:42.69\00:00:44.94 Dr. Carol Richardson along with Darlene Hall who is a registered 00:00:44.98\00:00:49.56 nurse. They are both with DESTINY Health and Life Style. 00:00:49.59\00:00:53.20 Ladies thank you so much for joining us. 00:00:53.23\00:00:55.34 Well, I should have brought my tissues because cancer is a 00:00:55.38\00:00:59.33 very serious thing to talk about. But to open first if you 00:00:59.40\00:01:02.60 would just explain what is cancer. 00:01:02.63\00:01:05.79 Well when you look at cancer, Melissa, you want to look at 00:01:05.83\00:01:09.62 the cellular level. When you look at the cells what you have 00:01:09.65\00:01:13.41 are cells that have basically gone out of control. 00:01:13.44\00:01:16.65 You know, our Creator God made each cell of our body with the 00:01:16.68\00:01:21.06 set of instructions and those instructions dictate to the cell 00:01:21.09\00:01:24.79 how long they will last, when they will die, how they will 00:01:24.82\00:01:28.49 grow and mature and their function. When that set of 00:01:28.52\00:01:32.47 instructions is misinterpreted or mutated in some way then 00:01:32.51\00:01:36.72 the instructions are not given to the cells as they should be 00:01:36.75\00:01:40.93 and you have chaos. 00:01:40.96\00:01:42.52 You know what, I like to think of cancer as terrorist cells. 00:01:42.55\00:01:46.19 If you give a terrorist an opportunity to get in, it will 00:01:46.22\00:01:49.82 come and take control. And that 00:01:49.86\00:01:52.13 is how cancer cells are invading 00:01:52.16\00:01:54.36 not only the surrounding tissues but spreading through the body 00:01:54.40\00:01:58.77 to other parts. Okay, so cancer is a cell that's 00:01:58.80\00:02:03.42 gone crazy. Haywire, out of control. 00:02:03.45\00:02:05.92 So what are some things that cause our cells to cause cancer 00:02:05.95\00:02:10.55 in our body? There are many factors. 00:02:10.58\00:02:13.52 Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides. Now cide, what is 00:02:17.12\00:02:19.40 that? It means to kill. We are inhaling, ingesting and walking 00:02:19.43\00:02:24.66 on these chemicals that are cancer causing. Also EMF, 00:02:24.70\00:02:29.24 electric magnetic fields, and we are surrounded by these every 00:02:29.27\00:02:35.84 day. EMF - electric magnetic fields. We spend hours watching 00:02:35.88\00:02:41.26 the TV, in front of the computer talking on the cell phone, 00:02:41.29\00:02:46.66 simple appliances such as your microwave, electric razors, 00:02:46.69\00:02:52.02 electric blankets. These magnetic fields have been shown 00:02:52.06\00:02:57.36 to penetrate walls and also it can penetrate the human body 00:02:57.40\00:03:02.51 causing structural damage to the DNA of the cells. 00:03:02.54\00:03:06.35 Well that's not only scary but it's very disheartening because 00:03:06.38\00:03:10.40 we live in a society where we can't get around it. I mean the 00:03:10.43\00:03:14.13 majority of us have cell phones, we have microwaves, we use them 00:03:14.17\00:03:17.73 daily and we can't stop living. 00:03:17.77\00:03:20.82 Well what we want to stress is this point, Melissa. We don't 00:03:20.85\00:03:24.21 want our viewers to go away thinking that everything they 00:03:24.24\00:03:27.61 come in contact with is going to cause cancer. We want them 00:03:27.65\00:03:30.99 to know that these things are potentially serious and they 00:03:31.02\00:03:34.71 have a potential to cause cancer but let's look at things that 00:03:34.74\00:03:38.39 we can prevent. For instance tobacco smoke. We know for 00:03:38.43\00:03:42.51 instance that across the world about 1.3 billion people smoke. 00:03:42.55\00:03:47.18 Every time someone takes a cigarette and lights up they 00:03:47.22\00:03:51.21 are getting about 4000 chemicals inhaled into their body. 00:03:51.25\00:03:55.46 We already know that 65 of those are potential cancer 00:03:55.49\00:03:59.66 causers. Alcohol. Alcohol causes damage 00:03:59.70\00:04:04.27 to the cell and it would leave the cell more vulnerable to 00:04:04.31\00:04:08.63 other carcinogens. Okay, what about someone who's 00:04:08.67\00:04:12.70 watching and says, I don't do any of that. You know I eat 00:04:12.73\00:04:15.50 healthy, or according to what we call healthy and I still ended 00:04:15.53\00:04:19.76 up with cancer. How do you explain that? 00:04:19.80\00:04:22.54 Anything that will cause the body to be vulnerable. 00:04:22.58\00:04:26.77 You might eat right, you might exercise. Stress... that's 00:04:26.81\00:04:30.77 another major factor that can 00:04:30.80\00:04:33.39 can cause alterations in the 00:04:33.43\00:04:35.99 tissue of the cells. 00:04:36.03\00:04:37.04 Because when you think about it, Melissa, in the immune system 00:04:37.08\00:04:41.21 God gave us cells that can basically go throughout the 00:04:41.25\00:04:45.35 body and scavenger these foreign invaders. If anything decreases 00:04:45.38\00:04:50.26 our immune system we are exposed to these carcinogens. 00:04:50.29\00:04:54.89 In some of my research I note that at any given moment our 00:04:54.93\00:04:59.10 body is fighting and killing cancer cells. So on a daily 00:04:59.14\00:05:03.28 basis we literally have cancer cells in our body. 00:05:03.31\00:05:06.17 All the time. You know, it has been estimated that we come 00:05:06.21\00:05:09.10 in contact with 300 killer cancer cells every day. 00:05:09.13\00:05:13.08 And the difference is between a healthy immune system and 00:05:13.12\00:05:17.07 one that isn't. Okay, well let's talk about a 00:05:17.11\00:05:19.63 healthy immune system, because apparently the immune system 00:05:19.66\00:05:21.50 is vital to the health of the cell thus to not getting cancer. 00:05:21.54\00:05:27.80 So explain that to me. 00:05:27.84\00:05:29.72 Well when you think about it there are various cells in our 00:05:29.75\00:05:34.18 bodies that basically go throughout the body and 00:05:34.22\00:05:36.57 scavenge. They look for foreign invaders and that's why it is 00:05:36.61\00:05:41.01 so important, and we are going 00:05:41.05\00:05:42.98 to talk about that later about 00:05:43.02\00:05:44.88 prevention. Prevention is the key. So what we want to do is 00:05:44.92\00:05:47.75 we want to do things that are going to build up our immune 00:05:47.79\00:05:50.59 system, build up the natural forces that God gave us to ward 00:05:50.63\00:05:54.78 off these invaders and these cancer invaders. One of the 00:05:54.82\00:05:58.73 cells that is very, very important in fighting cancer 00:05:58.77\00:06:02.61 is the natural killer cells and we'll talk about that a little 00:06:02.64\00:06:06.21 bit when we talk about the foods and we go into prevention. 00:06:06.24\00:06:09.77 Now don't forget. No we won't forget that, that's 00:06:09.81\00:06:12.70 very important. Yes this is very important, 00:06:12.74\00:06:19.73 you know from cancer to viruses and we see all these diseases 00:06:19.76\00:06:25.26 going around especially cancer. Now am I correct that cancer 00:06:25.29\00:06:30.76 has now superseded heart disease in its rating at least in the 00:06:30.80\00:06:36.13 western part of the world? 00:06:36.16\00:06:37.48 No not really. Cancer is not the number one cause of death; 00:06:37.52\00:06:41.98 heart disease still remains number one. But when you think 00:06:42.02\00:06:47.98 about it, Melissa, in America over 1.5 million people will be 00:06:48.02\00:06:54.14 diagnosed with cancer in 2005 alone. Of that, about half 00:06:54.17\00:07:00.26 a million people will die. 00:07:00.30\00:07:03.74 You know actually I really think and unfortunately I can't 00:07:05.09\00:07:07.03 pinpoint the research but cancer 00:07:07.06\00:07:08.93 has now surpassed heart disease. Now don't quote me on that but 00:07:08.97\00:07:12.22 I'm trying to figure out where I've read that. 00:07:12.26\00:07:14.30 If it hasn't surpassed, it's very close. But I don't think 00:07:14.33\00:07:17.82 it's the number one as yet. But when you think about it 00:07:17.85\00:07:21.27 it's a major issue because 1500 people will die a day in America 00:07:21.30\00:07:26.07 from getting the diagnosis of cancer, 1500. 00:07:26.11\00:07:29.57 And of that 1.3 million new cases, 175,000 of those cases 00:07:29.61\00:07:36.42 will be due to tobacco and 165,000 people will die this 00:07:36.46\00:07:41.53 year from lung cancer due to tobacco; something that's 00:07:41.56\00:07:46.59 preventable. That's unbelievable. 00:07:46.63\00:07:50.03 Okay, well the things that we can do with the immune system. 00:07:50.06\00:07:54.51 I know we're talking about prevention. What can we do to 00:07:54.55\00:07:58.26 boost our immune system, to strengthen it, to hopefully 00:07:58.30\00:08:01.98 help ward off cancer? 00:08:02.02\00:08:03.58 Well maybe before we go into that, Melissa, say for instance 00:08:03.62\00:08:08.90 we're in a doctor's office. I know as being a physician 00:08:08.93\00:08:12.32 I have had to give that diagnosis; Ma'am, you have 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.74 cancer. it's like a death sentence. And the patient who 00:08:15.78\00:08:20.82 hardly can hear you, but when they collect themselves they 00:08:20.86\00:08:26.00 want to know well what can I do? And in the medical community 00:08:26.03\00:08:31.14 we basically have three things that we tell patients. Number 00:08:31.18\00:08:33.06 one: You can have surgery. Number two: You can undergo 00:08:33.09\00:08:37.93 chemotherapy, that's where very powerful drugs are sent through 00:08:37.97\00:08:42.30 the venous system to hopefully get the cancer that might not be 00:08:42.34\00:08:46.64 visible at the site and also radiation. 00:08:46.67\00:08:49.50 So cut it out, poison it out or burn it out. 00:08:49.53\00:08:51.88 The thing with these modalities is that chemotherapy and 00:08:51.91\00:08:57.92 radiation are going to kill everything in sight, normal 00:08:57.95\00:09:03.64 cells as well as cancerous cells and that's a fact and 00:09:03.68\00:09:09.30 that's why it's important that we stress to our audience that 00:09:09.34\00:09:12.93 we need to build up our immune systems. 00:09:12.97\00:09:15.29 Melissa, I've been a nurse for over 20 years and I've seen 00:09:15.32\00:09:20.62 just about everything. I have been there when the doctor has 00:09:21.03\00:09:24.95 given that diagnosis, "You have cancer. " I've been there with 00:09:24.99\00:09:28.88 the surgery, then followed up by chemo and radiation. 00:09:28.92\00:09:33.22 So basically you've seen a patient from the diagnosis, 00:09:33.25\00:09:37.52 the prognosis, all the way through. 00:09:37.56\00:09:39.47 And unfortunately when the doctor is there to say you have 00:09:39.51\00:09:43.98 six months to live, I've seen all of that. Despite the 00:09:44.01\00:09:48.42 billions of dollars that we are spending, the technological 00:09:48.45\00:09:52.68 advances, the fact remains that we are not winning the war on 00:09:52.71\00:09:56.91 cancer and so prevention is the key. 00:09:56.94\00:09:59.05 Let's talk about prevention. Where do we start, what do we do 00:09:59.09\00:10:03.80 One of the most exciting topics that we want to get across to 00:10:03.84\00:10:09.15 our viewers is by the way of nutritional therapy. Nutrition. 00:10:09.19\00:10:14.46 And you know, while I was in medical school, Melissa, 00:10:14.50\00:10:19.02 spending close to 12 years studying, very little time is 00:10:19.06\00:10:25.14 spent teaching physicians how to order and counsel patients 00:10:25.17\00:10:29.96 regarding their diets. I don't know about Darlene. Was that 00:10:30.00\00:10:34.76 true with you too? We received very little training 00:10:34.79\00:10:39.03 in nutrition. Maybe that was just the school 00:10:39.06\00:10:40.91 you went to. I mean, I can't... 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.91 I think it's universal. Really!? 00:10:42.95\00:10:44.85 I'm sorry. You know I'm not a doctor or nurse. I don't know 00:10:44.89\00:10:49.72 any of this stuff. But you're telling me that my physician 00:10:49.76\00:10:54.56 has probably had very little education as far as nutrition? 00:10:54.59\00:10:58.27 Exactly. But doesn't the Bible say you 00:10:58.30\00:11:00.29 are what you eat? So how could that play such a little role in 00:11:00.33\00:11:05.53 caring for and curing the illnesses of people? 00:11:05.56\00:11:08.96 Well Darlene when you're at the bedside I think the viewers 00:11:09.00\00:11:13.46 might want to know, what do you see at the bedside? 00:11:13.49\00:11:15.38 Well, it's interesting because I go into the patient's room and 00:11:15.42\00:11:20.50 I see the tables just lined with junk food; you know, 00:11:20.53\00:11:25.27 cookies, chips, soda. And a cancer patient's appetite is 00:11:25.30\00:11:29.73 usually not there. And in an attempt to get the patient to 00:11:29.77\00:11:34.13 eat anything family members will bring in this junk. I know that 00:11:34.17\00:11:38.29 that's the worst thing any patient could have, especially 00:11:38.30\00:11:41.94 a cancer patient. Well, they're saying well they 00:11:41.97\00:11:45.60 are dying. You know, there are some people that have that 00:11:45.64\00:11:48.29 attitude; let them enjoy while they can because they're dying 00:11:48.32\00:11:51.03 from cancer. The doctor already said they only have a few months 00:11:51.07\00:11:53.75 to live and there's nothing they can do so what would you 00:11:53.78\00:11:56.66 tell them with that attitude and these foods? 00:11:56.69\00:11:58.70 You know, these foods are fueling those cancerous cells. 00:11:58.74\00:12:01.88 It just makes them take off and grow like crazy. That's why diet 00:12:01.92\00:12:06.16 is just so important. I look at these patients and I say, my, 00:12:06.19\00:12:10.40 how different it could have been had they only known; 00:12:10.43\00:12:14.64 you know, fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables. Those are foods 00:12:14.68\00:12:18.69 that will build health, that will strengthen the immune 00:12:18.72\00:12:21.77 system. So you're saying it's not 00:12:21.80\00:12:24.94 necessarily a death sentence although they have been given 00:12:24.98\00:12:27.47 one, if they look at nutrition? Absolutely. 00:12:27.50\00:12:29.54 You have to elaborate. 00:12:29.57\00:12:30.54 Well when we go to our acronym, DESTINY, for instance 00:12:30.55\00:12:34.60 DESTINY Health and Lifestyle, that's your ministry. 00:12:34.63\00:12:38.61 Exactly. We believe that destiny is not a matter of chance, 00:12:38.65\00:12:42.30 It's a matter of choice and if 00:12:42.33\00:12:45.07 we can empower people to know 00:12:45.11\00:12:47.78 that cancer does not have to be a death sentence. Now that's 00:12:47.82\00:12:51.48 not to say that in incorporating these healthy lifestyles 00:12:51.52\00:12:55.11 everybody is going to be saved, but what we want to do is stress 00:12:55.15\00:12:58.50 the fact that there is hope. 00:12:58.53\00:13:00.99 Well, what is that hope? 00:13:01.02\00:13:03.41 You know, when I go through the grocery store, the produce aisle 00:13:03.45\00:13:08.30 I look at foods totally differently. I don't see just an 00:13:08.76\00:13:13.44 apple or an orange. I see the chemicals, the chemicals that 00:13:13.48\00:13:18.99 are health building in these foods. Exercise. We're going to 00:13:19.03\00:13:24.51 talk about exercise. Let me just go through the acronym. 00:13:24.54\00:13:26.92 D is for divine trust. E is for exercise. S is for sunshine 00:13:27.20\00:13:32.52 and fresh air. T is temperance. I is increased water intake. 00:13:32.56\00:13:37.85 N nutrition and Y is for your nightly rest. 00:13:37.88\00:13:42.37 When we incorporate all of these into a plan, it will build 00:13:42.41\00:13:48.13 a healthy immune system. 00:13:48.16\00:13:49.85 Let's just take for instance D. Let's start at the beginning. 00:13:49.89\00:13:53.85 When we read studies now physicians are noting that 00:13:53.88\00:13:59.22 people who have a trust in a higher power, which we know is 00:13:59.26\00:14:03.48 God our Creator. We know that when people pray we know that 00:14:03.51\00:14:07.12 they have a hope that they know that they can build their 00:14:07.16\00:14:11.69 confidence on something other that themselves. These people 00:14:11.72\00:14:16.22 tend to have healthy immune systems. These people tend to 00:14:16.26\00:14:19.17 have decreased levels of stress. We know that these people have 00:14:19.20\00:14:23.07 have higher survival rates even if they are diagnosed with 00:14:23.11\00:14:27.34 cancer. Prayer. We have seen reports in the literature even 00:14:27.38\00:14:32.31 places like Harvard that show what trusting in God can do. 00:14:32.34\00:14:37.13 Physiologically explain because we really get the health 00:14:37.16\00:14:41.87 principles based on the Bible and the verse (and I've said it 00:14:41.91\00:14:45.57 before in another show) where it says a merry heart doeth good 00:14:45.61\00:14:49.23 like a medicine but a broken spirit drieth the bones. 00:14:49.27\00:14:53.75 There's a physiological aspect to that about the bone. 00:14:53.79\00:14:58.24 Explain that. When you think about it, Melissa 00:14:58.27\00:15:00.88 where do the immune cells grow? In the bone marrow. Okay. 00:15:00.91\00:15:08.64 So you know our heavenly Father did not explain all the details 00:15:08.68\00:15:12.95 but he gave us simple principles that we can build on and when 00:15:12.98\00:15:17.22 we go to nutrition, fruit, grains, vegetables and nuts; 00:15:17.25\00:15:20.35 that's the diet that we were given in the beginning. God knew 00:15:20.39\00:15:24.37 that they would have these chemicals and phytochemicals 00:15:24.40\00:15:27.71 that would help build up the immune system. 00:15:27.74\00:15:29.09 Okay, so back to the acronym. 00:15:29.13\00:15:31.19 So E, when you think about exercise there is clear, 00:15:31.22\00:15:35.28 compelling, scientific evidence that exercise decreases your 00:15:35.32\00:15:39.71 risk of developing some types of cancer. How does this work? 00:15:39.74\00:15:45.07 Exercise stimulates the production of natural chemicals 00:15:45.11\00:15:51.89 Interleukin I which stimulates another natural chemical 00:15:51.92\00:15:58.23 Interleukin II and these two combine to release a natural 00:15:58.27\00:16:04.05 killer cell that has been shown to decrease cancer rates. 00:16:04.09\00:16:09.17 Exercise is simple. You don't really need a lot of money; 00:16:09.20\00:16:14.21 just getting out there and just moving that body will decrease 00:16:14.25\00:16:17.65 your risks. I heard also that some exercises 00:16:17.69\00:16:20.74 stimulate the lymphatic system which also boosts the immune 00:16:20.78\00:16:24.19 system. Exactly, because you're 00:16:24.22\00:16:26.65 stimulating the circulation. And S. 00:16:26.68\00:16:29.04 S - Sunshine. For years we have heard stay out of the sun, you 00:16:29.08\00:16:32.72 know, you'll get skin cancer. Well studies are now showing 00:16:32.76\00:16:36.90 sunshine can prevent more cancers than what it causes. 00:16:36.94\00:16:42.18 Really? Definitely. Lymphatic, breast cancer, lung cancer. 00:16:42.21\00:16:47.63 It stimulates the immune system. When we're out that vitamin D 00:16:47.67\00:16:51.98 is what is released. So we need to get out there and get that 00:16:52.01\00:16:56.29 sunshine. So the risk comes when you take 00:16:56.32\00:17:00.14 in too much fat; is that correct? Is that when you're at 00:17:00.18\00:17:03.07 a higher risk of getting skin cancer from overexposure to the 00:17:03.11\00:17:06.29 sun? Exactly. That is one of the 00:17:06.32\00:17:08.27 things that is being discussed right now regarding the reason 00:17:08.31\00:17:11.54 why maybe we are being more susceptible to the rays of the 00:17:11.58\00:17:15.14 sun is because of that increased fat content in our diets. 00:17:15.17\00:17:18.72 And then sunshine, as I said, stimulates the production of 00:17:18.75\00:17:22.27 vitamin D. Vitamin D lowers the cholesterol level. 00:17:22.30\00:17:26.62 Now when we go to T temperance. Now we hear reports 00:17:26.66\00:17:30.91 today, and that's why we can't listen to everything that we 00:17:30.95\00:17:35.03 hear, that we can take alcohol in moderation because we're 00:17:35.06\00:17:38.42 going to get five flavonoids. We're going to talk about that 00:17:38.46\00:17:41.72 a little later. But we know science has already shown how 00:17:41.75\00:17:44.86 alcohol can increase the risk of certain cancers. So we want 00:17:44.89\00:17:48.18 to eliminate alcohol from our diet, especially the cancer 00:17:48.22\00:17:51.55 patient. In addition, we've already talked about tobacco. 00:17:51.58\00:17:54.74 So we want to eliminate these from our diets and we want to 00:17:54.78\00:17:58.13 use in moderation those things that are good. That's where 00:17:58.17\00:18:01.49 temperance comes in. So that saying everything in 00:18:01.52\00:18:04.16 moderation is not the true definition of temperance. 00:18:04.19\00:18:06.80 No it is not. What is it, totally abstaining? 00:18:06.83\00:18:11.39 Totally abstaining from those things that are deleterious to 00:18:11.43\00:18:15.39 the body and using in moderation those things which are healthy 00:18:15.43\00:18:19.36 for the body. I. I is for increased water 00:18:19.39\00:18:24.73 intake. We have trillions of cells in our bodies and they 00:18:24.77\00:18:28.53 are just crying out for water, I'm thirsty, I'm thirsty. 00:18:28.56\00:18:32.25 I like this analogy. Let's say you have a sink full of dirty, 00:18:32.29\00:18:37.95 grimy dishes and you just pour a cup of water on those dishes. 00:18:37.98\00:18:43.37 It's not going to clean them. So we need to increase our water 00:18:43.40\00:18:49.40 intake; not soda, not tea, not Coca Cola, not juice. 00:18:49.44\00:18:55.37 Water. So how much water do you need? Well it depends upon your 00:18:55.41\00:19:00.87 weight. There is a formula but on average 8-10 glasses a day. 00:19:00.91\00:19:06.45 So once again getting back to the body's ability to fight off 00:19:06.48\00:19:11.99 disease, infection and cancer cells. How do these cancer 00:19:12.03\00:19:16.09 fighters get to the site where they can do their job? They need 00:19:16.13\00:19:20.86 water. They need a liquid environment so that they can 00:19:20.89\00:19:23.11 move freely throughout the body. 00:19:23.15\00:19:26.46 Now I heard a wonderful example 00:19:26.49\00:19:27.68 that I was sharing with someone 00:19:27.72\00:19:29.46 before about water. It's like 00:19:29.50\00:19:31.17 you look at a lake and the water is stagnant. It draws all kinds 00:19:31.20\00:19:37.51 of bugs and toxins and so forth. It's like how the blood in the 00:19:37.54\00:19:43.82 system is the same way. It does not flow smoothly, it's stagnant 00:19:43.86\00:19:45.81 and it holds toxins. They say water is a natural blood 00:19:45.84\00:19:51.55 thinner to help it flow. 00:19:51.59\00:19:52.97 Exactly. So more water to flush out those toxins in the body. 00:19:53.00\00:19:56.67 But before we get to nutrition we're going to do why your 00:19:56.71\00:20:00.34 your nightly rest; why is that important? 00:20:00.38\00:20:02.31 You know, Americans are driven people. We're burning the candle 00:20:02.34\00:20:07.36 not only on both ends but in the 00:20:07.40\00:20:09.30 middle now. And the time that we sleep is so important, because 00:20:09.34\00:20:14.56 the body is able to rejuvenate, 00:20:14.60\00:20:16.39 to restore and to rebuild at night and there are certain 00:20:16.42\00:20:20.80 times of a night that hormones and chemicals are released and 00:20:20.84\00:20:25.23 if you've missed that sleep you've missed that opportunity. 00:20:25.26\00:20:30.39 So it's best to get your sleep before 10. After 12 o'clock 00:20:30.42\00:20:34.97 you've missed the opportunity for that immune system to kick 00:20:35.00\00:20:39.47 into high gear and to release and rebuild for the next day. 00:20:39.50\00:20:43.94 Now we come to the point, Melissa, where we're talking 00:20:43.97\00:20:47.37 about nutrition and that's exciting. We don't want our 00:20:47.40\00:20:50.83 viewers to leave this program looking at a carrot the same 00:20:50.87\00:20:54.62 way or looking at broccoli the same way. We want them to see 00:20:54.65\00:20:57.90 those phytochemicals. First when we think about it, why is 00:20:57.94\00:21:01.43 it important? We think about free radicals, phytochemicals, 00:21:01.46\00:21:04.89 antioxidants. Free radicals are just oxygen molecules that have 00:21:04.92\00:21:09.18 lost an electron. When they have lost an electron they're angry 00:21:09.21\00:21:13.44 and they are looking to cause damage. When we given them 00:21:13.47\00:21:17.74 phytoantioxidants that will replace that electron, we are 00:21:17.78\00:21:21.56 decreasing that damage and restoring. So we want to make 00:21:21.60\00:21:25.31 sure that our viewers know that it is the free radicals in our 00:21:25.35\00:21:29.09 environment that we have no control over that can eventually 00:21:29.12\00:21:32.83 damage the cell and cause mutation leading to cancer. 00:21:32.86\00:21:36.04 So what are these foods, what are these antioxidants? Broccoli 00:21:36.07\00:21:40.89 Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage have chemicals called 00:21:40.93\00:21:44.88 endolphlicarbonals. These are antioxidants which look for 00:21:44.92\00:21:49.84 cancer cells and destroy them once again building up our 00:21:49.88\00:21:55.24 immunity. Broccoli? Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel 00:21:55.27\00:22:00.22 sprouts. Not only that, they also decrease women's risk of 00:22:00.26\00:22:05.18 breast cancer because they act to naturally prevent the excess 00:22:05.22\00:22:10.06 estrogens that can cause cancer of the breast. 00:22:10.10\00:22:13.78 So this is a good think not only to prevent but with cancer to 00:22:13.81\00:22:19.09 help fight it. Exactly. You never look at food as an 00:22:19.12\00:22:24.39 assistance to help the body fight disease. 00:22:24.42\00:22:27.23 Exactly and that's the point, the message that we want to get 00:22:27.27\00:22:30.80 out to our viewers. And it's so important, because research 00:22:30.84\00:22:34.30 now is only beginning to scratch the surface of what God told us 00:22:34.34\00:22:38.71 over 6000 years ago regarding diet. 00:22:38.75\00:22:41.90 You know, we've heard let your food be your medicine and your 00:22:41.94\00:22:46.39 medicine you food. Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants. 00:22:46.42\00:22:50.80 What are carotenoids? There are over 600 that are found in your 00:22:50.84\00:22:55.40 colorful fruits and vegetables; your red, orange, yellow and 00:22:55.43\00:23:00.99 greens. These foods, sweet potatoes, kale, squash, mangos, 00:23:01.03\00:23:06.56 (my favorite). You know these foods are bursting with 00:23:06.59\00:23:12.56 antioxidants which are powerful against cancer. 00:23:12.60\00:23:16.21 You know, I really appreciate the two of you because you're 00:23:16.25\00:23:19.24 professional; you're a doctor, you're a nurse and of course 00:23:19.28\00:23:23.35 you support your livelihood but you're also bringing in a whole 00:23:23.39\00:23:27.43 different element that many do not hear and that's the 00:23:27.46\00:23:31.41 importance of nutrition. It's really amazing. You'll hear 00:23:31.45\00:23:34.66 people just downing what the doctors do and the doctors 00:23:34.69\00:23:38.72 downing what the nutritionists do, but you've got a balance 00:23:38.76\00:23:42.75 and you've got scientific research and I so appreciate 00:23:42.79\00:23:46.14 that. So we've got four minutes. You have a patient that has been 00:23:46.18\00:23:50.94 given absolutely no hope or you have one that has cancer 00:23:50.98\00:23:54.28 and they're going through these treatments. What can you tell 00:23:54.32\00:23:57.38 them, what can they do. I know we've already gone through it, 00:23:57.41\00:24:00.43 but you're sitting there and they've got a note pad and they 00:24:00.47\00:24:03.66 are taking notes, quickly run it down to them some things that 00:24:03.70\00:24:07.85 will help fight by God's grace this sickness that has been 00:24:07.88\00:24:11.60 given to them that they look at as a death sentence. 00:24:11.63\00:24:14.25 I think what we need to stress is that we want to tell people 00:24:14.29\00:24:19.97 that there is hope. We want to 00:24:20.01\00:24:21.51 tell them that with trust and faith in God, there is a 00:24:21.55\00:24:25.64 solution, there is an answer. We want to tell them that we 00:24:25.67\00:24:29.69 want to make sure they get their exercise to boost their immune 00:24:29.73\00:24:33.07 system. We make sure that they are getting proper nutrition. 00:24:33.11\00:24:36.23 Now there are other things that they can incorporate into their 00:24:36.26\00:24:39.41 diet which are important. When we think about the flavonoids 00:24:39.44\00:24:43.58 there are over 4000 flavonoids that have been discovered. 00:24:43.61\00:24:47.72 We're just scratching the surface. Where do they get their 00:24:47.73\00:24:52.41 flavonoids? These are actually really cancer scavengers and 00:24:52.44\00:24:57.34 the dark fruits; the black berries, the blue berries, the 00:24:57.37\00:25:03.10 raspberries, the grapes. Once again we want to help them to 00:25:03.13\00:25:08.83 build up their immune systems. 00:25:08.86\00:25:10.43 You know, the cure is in the cause. What caused that patient 00:25:10.46\00:25:15.33 to develop cancer? What life style changes. Are they smoking? 00:25:15.37\00:25:20.20 Are they drinking? Are they 00:25:20.23\00:25:22.49 having hours that would lead to poor health. So we need to 00:25:22.52\00:25:27.29 look at those factors. The detoxification of the body is 00:25:27.33\00:25:32.03 also important. Foods such as garlic (it sounds really simple) 00:25:32.06\00:25:36.92 there are over 100 compounds that are in garlic; it's a 00:25:36.96\00:25:42.64 natural antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral and research is 00:25:42.68\00:25:48.33 showing that it will inhibit certain cancerous growths. 00:25:48.36\00:25:52.93 Really, inhibit, so that means stops it in its tracks. 00:25:52.97\00:25:55.74 It can inhibit, it can inhibit. You know so God gave us 00:25:55.77\00:26:01.19 everything that we need to heal the body. So when we 00:26:01.22\00:26:06.61 incorporate lifestyle changes, your water, the exercise, trust 00:26:06.65\00:26:11.92 in God, getting your rest cancer does not have to be 00:26:11.96\00:26:15.81 a death sentence. And you know another thing we 00:26:15.84\00:26:19.63 haven't talked about a great deal, but people who get this 00:26:19.66\00:26:23.57 this cancer diagnosis (I don't like to call it a death sentence 00:26:23.60\00:26:26.87 of course) but when people get the news that they have a cancer 00:26:26.91\00:26:30.14 diagnosis, stress levels immediately rise and we know 00:26:30.18\00:26:34.77 that based on the physiology of the adrenal glands when stress 00:26:34.81\00:26:39.09 is produced in the body cortisol is produced. When cortisol is 00:26:39.12\00:26:43.37 produced it decreases the immune function. So when people 00:26:43.40\00:26:47.51 have a hope, a trust in God, and they incorporate healthy 00:26:47.54\00:26:51.96 life style choices into their lives those levels are going to 00:26:52.00\00:26:56.35 go down. We want to give so that people have a fighting chance to 00:26:56.38\00:27:01.95 build their immune systems to increase their chances. 00:27:01.99\00:27:06.88 Do you get a chance as a nurse to kind of share this life style 00:27:06.91\00:27:12.90 information? I do. Every opportunity I talk 00:27:12.93\00:27:16.65 with my patients. I let them know, you know, listen, these 00:27:16.68\00:27:20.87 foods that you are eating you know what's in them. I talk to 00:27:20.90\00:27:24.90 them about fruits, nuts, grains and vegetables. I love doing 00:27:24.94\00:27:28.91 that. Dr. Richardson, Nurse Hall 00:27:28.95\00:27:31.32 thank you so much for coming, for sharing this information 00:27:31.35\00:27:34.95 this vital information. And for you God bless you. If you've 00:27:34.99\00:27:38.55 heard the word cancer applied to your life or a loved one's 00:27:38.59\00:27:42.08 there is hope. You are not dying you are living. Give it to God 00:27:42.12\00:27:46.16 seek your physician for counseling but the great 00:27:46.19\00:27:48.60 physician for the answer and the cure. 00:27:48.64\00:27:50.80 May God bless you until next time. We love you and are 00:27:50.84\00:27:53.84 praying for you. Bye. 00:27:53.87\00:27:59.75
