Hello! I am sure there have been times when you have looked 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.93 at some little lesion on your finger or your face or 00:00:04.96\00:00:08.71 some other place in the body and you have said I wonder 00:00:08.74\00:00:11.82 what that thing is, well I have some pictures and we have 00:00:11.85\00:00:15.62 some discussion about a variety of topics, some things that 00:00:15.65\00:00:19.38 you have seen before, perhaps some things you haven't. 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.06 We hope you will join us in this program because we think 00:00:22.09\00:00:25.00 that you will learn some things. 00:00:25.03\00:00:26.57 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health 00:00:46.45\00:00:49.20 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:49.23\00:00:52.61 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:52.64\00:00:55.75 There are a number of lesions that occur inside of the mouth 00:00:58.14\00:01:02.97 that require some special care. 00:01:03.00\00:01:05.42 One of those is the mouth ulcer which occurs on the tongue 00:01:05.45\00:01:10.13 as an ulcer off on the side of the tongue, sometimes 00:01:10.16\00:01:14.27 on the inside of the jaw or the back of the lip and these can be 00:01:14.30\00:01:19.22 most painful and they can be treated with Golden Seal Tea 00:01:19.25\00:01:23.09 simply swished in the mouth and swallowed because the tea 00:01:23.12\00:01:27.02 has some anti-microbial benefits and it also boosts the 00:01:27.05\00:01:31.30 immune system a wee bit. 00:01:31.33\00:01:33.27 But there are other problems that involve the inside of the 00:01:33.30\00:01:37.52 mouth that I think that you will enjoy seeing some 00:01:37.55\00:01:42.09 pictures of and also hearing some discussion about. 00:01:42.12\00:01:46.07 I have asked Rhonda Clark who is my colleague 00:01:46.10\00:01:49.05 at Uchee Pines to join me on this subject of the 00:01:49.08\00:01:53.69 geographic tongue, is that something that one gets from 00:01:53.72\00:01:58.21 traveling a lot? 00:01:58.24\00:01:59.21 - The name geographic tongue is rather interesting, 00:01:59.22\00:02:02.14 it actually has to do with the appearance of the tongue. 00:02:02.17\00:02:05.64 I have a graphic that I have brought with me to show you 00:02:05.67\00:02:08.54 a picture so that you can see an example of what geographic 00:02:08.57\00:02:11.63 tongue looks like. 00:02:11.67\00:02:13.09 It gets it's name because the tongue has splotches of white 00:02:13.12\00:02:17.54 and red that can appear like continents of a world globe 00:02:17.57\00:02:22.68 and it's also know as geographic tongue because these splotches 00:02:22.71\00:02:26.43 can move and change locations the areas that are bright red 00:02:26.46\00:02:31.76 can be very sore as you can see here, they actually look 00:02:31.79\00:02:35.70 a little sore to even look at. 00:02:35.73\00:02:37.37 The whitish areas can appear like thrush and some people 00:02:37.40\00:02:41.24 may think that they have thrush or a fungal infection 00:02:41.27\00:02:43.63 in the mouth, when actually if that area is cultured it won't 00:02:43.66\00:02:47.56 grow anything fungus. 00:02:47.59\00:02:49.24 So this is something that can be quite painful and 00:02:49.27\00:02:53.09 irritating, there is possibly a genetic component to this 00:02:53.12\00:02:57.77 condition and another interesting theory behind what 00:02:57.80\00:03:01.53 causes geographic tongue is that of a zinc deficiency. 00:03:01.56\00:03:04.61 I wanted to share a case study of an individual who was 00:03:04.64\00:03:08.40 a student at Uchee Pines who had geographic tongue 00:03:08.43\00:03:10.99 and several things that he did in his lifestyle resolved this 00:03:11.02\00:03:15.89 and while we don't know particularly what it was 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.03 we wanted to share his case. 00:03:18.06\00:03:20.01 He went from eating a lot of junk food, very salty and 00:03:20.04\00:03:24.69 highly refined, lots of sugar to eating a healthful 00:03:24.72\00:03:28.02 plant based diet and he increased his intake of Omega 3 00:03:28.05\00:03:32.31 oils, which we find in walnuts and flax seed and that in 00:03:32.34\00:03:37.07 conjunction with drinking plenty of water and switching from a 00:03:37.10\00:03:41.38 traditional conventional drug store type of toothpaste 00:03:41.41\00:03:45.12 to a natural toothpaste that had tea tree oil, the geographic 00:03:45.15\00:03:49.39 tongue completely resolved and he had noticed a normal 00:03:49.42\00:03:52.64 pink healthy looking tongue. 00:03:52.67\00:03:54.34 I understand Dr. Thrash that you have had good success 00:03:54.37\00:03:57.90 in using a turmeric wash. 00:03:57.93\00:03:59.73 - Yes, turmeric wash is quite nice, the turmeric wash can be 00:03:59.76\00:04:04.88 used as maybe two or three teaspoons in about a half of cup 00:04:04.91\00:04:08.62 of warm water, swish the turmeric in the mouth and then 00:04:08.65\00:04:12.70 of course it's expectorated because you wouldn't want to 00:04:12.73\00:04:15.60 take that much turmeric at once. 00:04:15.63\00:04:17.92 Turmeric can be a little irritating to the stomach 00:04:17.95\00:04:21.15 if you take a lot of it, however turmeric has some 00:04:21.18\00:04:24.44 wonderful anti-inflammatory properties, so we of course 00:04:24.47\00:04:30.21 want to make certain that we get all the benefit from the 00:04:30.24\00:04:33.85 anti-inflammatory properties for a geographic tongue. 00:04:33.88\00:04:37.24 I favor this idea of a zinc deficiency because we had 00:04:37.27\00:04:41.19 a patient at Uchee Pines who had a geographic tongue 00:04:41.22\00:04:44.70 off and on for many years, and then it was discovered about 00:04:44.73\00:04:50.11 20- 25 years ago that taking zinc lozenges could be good 00:04:50.14\00:04:56.88 for sore throats and colds and could stop people from 00:04:56.91\00:05:01.03 the progress of an early cold if you take the zinc lozenge 00:05:01.06\00:05:05.97 early in the course of your coming down with a cold. 00:05:06.00\00:05:09.87 You can often stop it so we started telling our patient 00:05:09.90\00:05:16.26 at Uchee Pines that it would be good if some zinc 00:05:16.29\00:05:21.31 were to be taken for a cold, after that there was no more 00:05:21.34\00:05:24.85 geographic tongue, so we were happy that we had learned 00:05:24.88\00:05:28.84 something new that I favor is one of the possible things 00:05:28.87\00:05:34.18 that could cause a geographic tongue. 00:05:34.21\00:05:36.12 - Yes! - Very good, thank you so much 00:05:36.15\00:05:39.24 for telling us about this interesting disorder, 00:05:39.27\00:05:42.63 I don't know if you can call it a disease maybe it's a 00:05:42.66\00:05:46.68 deficiency disease, thank you very much. 00:05:46.71\00:05:49.14 - Glad to be here. - Now other things that can 00:05:49.30\00:05:51.74 occur in the mouth are gum boils and those can be nicely 00:05:51.77\00:05:57.32 treated with Aloe Vera, and I like a little part of the 00:05:57.35\00:06:02.54 stalk of an Aloe Vera or the blade of an Aloe Vera plant 00:06:02.57\00:06:06.62 just trim the little thorny parts off and one side of the 00:06:06.65\00:06:13.43 cortex and just lay it against the place on the gum where there 00:06:13.46\00:06:18.50 can be a need for either a tooth brush injury or a gum boil 00:06:18.53\00:06:26.10 and it can be very healing. 00:06:26.13\00:06:28.14 Now on the hands probably warts are among our most 00:06:28.17\00:06:33.93 prominent things that we can get and especially in children 00:06:33.96\00:06:37.86 so I've asked Cal Thrash if he would join me today to talk 00:06:37.89\00:06:42.79 about this subject of warts. 00:06:42.82\00:06:45.25 Have you had any experience Cal with warts? 00:06:45.28\00:06:48.20 - A little bit! - Welcome to our program 00:06:48.23\00:06:50.59 we hope that you can give us some information that will 00:06:50.62\00:06:53.70 benefit our viewers. - Well thank you! 00:06:53.73\00:06:57.02 Warts are not very sightly, it's an unsightly little problem 00:06:57.05\00:07:01.09 and it's caused by a small virus, the Papillomas virus 00:07:01.12\00:07:04.70 that gets into the skin and it can be unsightly and even 00:07:04.73\00:07:11.53 painful at times. - And it can bleed and those 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.32 little finger like projections can get knocked off and... 00:07:15.35\00:07:18.42 yes, very painful and very uncomfortable and unsightly. 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.96 - I got one when I was about 10 years old, my first 00:07:22.00\00:07:25.59 little wart and of course at that age that was kind of fun 00:07:25.62\00:07:28.75 but as you get older it's not so fun any more... 00:07:28.78\00:07:31.52 - Were you handling frogs was that how you... 00:07:31.55\00:07:33.87 - I'm really not certain how I got it, they say that's the 00:07:33.90\00:07:36.32 way and I'm sure that probably I did, but I had just gotten a 00:07:36.35\00:07:39.17 pocket knife for my birthday and so I think I worry that wart 00:07:39.20\00:07:42.11 right out of there and didn't have any more problem with it 00:07:42.14\00:07:45.92 but many people don't have the... 00:07:45.95\00:07:48.15 They can't get them to go away, they just seem to keep 00:07:48.18\00:07:50.49 going on and on. 00:07:50.52\00:07:51.66 - By the way the idea about the frogs that's an old wives tale 00:07:51.69\00:07:58.26 that I feel sure, because little boys do get them more and 00:07:58.29\00:08:01.59 little boys handle frogs more than little girls but I think... 00:08:01.62\00:08:05.48 - Not today! - I think it's because 00:08:05.51\00:08:08.18 little boys are more out in the cold and they often don't 00:08:08.21\00:08:13.35 care to wear gloves and the skin gets chilled. 00:08:13.38\00:08:18.40 Well any time the skin gets chilled of course it's going to 00:08:18.43\00:08:21.54 cause a weakening of the immune system there and so if the 00:08:21.57\00:08:26.75 immune system is weakened and the virus is right there 00:08:26.78\00:08:29.43 then of course it's prone to get the virus that's going to 00:08:29.46\00:08:33.58 cause the epidermis to overgrow and make those little 00:08:33.61\00:08:37.87 finger like projections that stick up. 00:08:37.90\00:08:39.67 - I kind of wondered whether washing the hands might 00:08:39.70\00:08:42.15 at least help with the ones that are around your hands 00:08:42.18\00:08:45.38 but I don't know whether you could just count on that. 00:08:45.41\00:08:48.61 I suppose that probably keeping your immune system healthy 00:08:48.64\00:08:51.44 is the best thing. 00:08:51.47\00:08:53.13 - That is a good thing. 00:08:53.16\00:08:54.45 Well how would you treat it? 00:08:54.48\00:08:56.21 - Well of course you can go to the drugstore and just get the 00:08:56.24\00:08:59.12 little Wart Away or one of those preparations that has 00:08:59.15\00:09:03.88 sialic acid, but if you want to treat it with a natural 00:09:03.91\00:09:06.51 remedy there are several that you can try. 00:09:06.54\00:09:08.47 Some of the ones that are at the drug store are so strong 00:09:08.50\00:09:14.55 that they cause some irritation and people have trouble 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.31 with that and don't especially like it to well so there are 00:09:18.35\00:09:22.42 several herbal preparation that are actually quite nice 00:09:22.45\00:09:26.10 and you can try them, they don't work with every person 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.08 and so I would say if you try one and it doesn't really 00:09:28.11\00:09:30.14 work for you then try another one and see if it would work. 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.89 - Don't give up with just one. 00:09:32.92\00:09:33.89 - Right! But the first one would be birch bark and birch bark 00:09:33.92\00:09:38.46 is similar in it's composition to the white willow bark 00:09:38.49\00:09:43.41 that we use for pain used as a tea or as ground and also 00:09:43.44\00:09:48.21 you can use white willow bark if you have the bark available 00:09:48.24\00:09:51.99 that's really the best thing, you can actually take a little 00:09:52.02\00:09:55.00 piece of the bark and put it in a square and put it right 00:09:55.03\00:09:58.51 over the (fresh even), put it right over the wart. 00:09:58.54\00:10:01.71 - And it will bend right with the wart. 00:10:01.74\00:10:04.48 - Right! It has a thin enough mark that you can usually 00:10:04.51\00:10:07.33 do that and then cover it with a band aid or a bandage of some 00:10:07.36\00:10:10.83 sort to hold it in place, just over night usually 00:10:10.86\00:10:13.30 is all that is necessary with that but you may have to do 00:10:13.33\00:10:15.53 that several days in a row. 00:10:15.56\00:10:17.28 Then there were some people that suggested that perhaps 00:10:17.31\00:10:20.04 it would be good to soak that over a 20 min period and see if 00:10:20.07\00:10:25.22 it would just come out on it's own, but the bark actually has 00:10:25.25\00:10:29.31 several little compounds in it but one of which is the 00:10:29.34\00:10:32.41 salicylates that are in and of course the salicylic acid 00:10:32.44\00:10:35.87 is the thing that the FDA has approved for removal of warts 00:10:35.90\00:10:39.70 anyway so it is one of the natural compounds that is 00:10:39.73\00:10:44.31 available in the white willow bark and also in the birch bark. 00:10:44.34\00:10:49.23 But another one that is common is Caster Oil, now it's has some 00:10:49.26\00:10:54.13 mixed success and in some countries it's been used 00:10:54.16\00:10:57.58 a quite bit, but I would say that if you use Caster Oil 00:10:57.61\00:11:00.44 probably that you would want to make sure that you repeat it 00:11:00.47\00:11:03.59 several days in a row, maybe 5-7 days, just massage the oil 00:11:03.62\00:11:08.70 right into the warts, into the area where the wart is 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.40 or you could even put some in to mix it up with the 00:11:11.43\00:11:14.94 white willow bark and let that sit for a few days 00:11:14.97\00:11:20.43 and it will make a little tincture that you can drain off 00:11:20.46\00:11:23.66 and use that as your oil to do that for the wart. 00:11:23.69\00:11:30.67 There is one that seemed to be good that was suggested 00:11:30.70\00:11:34.25 for plantar warts, as you know plantar warts are the ones 00:11:34.28\00:11:37.56 that are on the foot and are usually in a place that makes 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.77 walking difficult, it makes it hard for you to get around. 00:11:40.80\00:11:43.20 - Right on the sole of the foot or in the arch or some other 00:11:43.23\00:11:47.79 bad place where it's going to be painful. 00:11:47.82\00:11:50.64 - I can't think of a really good place on the bottom of the foot 00:11:50.67\00:11:53.84 where you could get a wart but it seems like that's where 00:11:53.87\00:11:56.70 they come and sometimes people will have these for quite a long 00:11:56.73\00:11:59.47 period of time, they are very difficult to get rid of 00:11:59.50\00:12:03.14 more so I think than the ones on other parts of the body 00:12:03.17\00:12:06.17 and so the suggestion was to get a pineapple and actually 00:12:06.20\00:12:11.62 cut a square of the thin on one side, of the skin of the 00:12:11.65\00:12:17.34 pineapple and put that against the plantar wart over night, 00:12:17.37\00:12:22.18 let it sit, now the enzyme from a fresh pineapple will make 00:12:22.21\00:12:26.31 the inside of your mouth a little bit irritated, and it may 00:12:26.34\00:12:30.09 irritate the wart as well, if it does that you may have to 00:12:30.12\00:12:33.62 try something else, one of the other herbal remedies, 00:12:33.65\00:12:37.09 but that's the idea is to try to let it eat away 00:12:37.12\00:12:41.14 a little bit at the wart and then soak the foot here again 00:12:41.17\00:12:46.39 for about 20 minutes and see whether you might be able 00:12:46.42\00:12:48.89 to get some of that little graininess out of there 00:12:48.92\00:12:53.21 and you may be able to do that over several days it might 00:12:53.24\00:12:56.42 be something that would move that completely out, 00:12:56.45\00:13:00.30 it would certainly be worth a try. 00:13:00.33\00:13:01.48 - Do you know if anybody has ever tried papaya? 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.49 - It has been tried actually the same type of idea, 00:13:04.52\00:13:08.04 the results that I have seen have not been quite as 00:13:08.07\00:13:12.82 successful as the pineapple and so you can try papaya 00:13:12.85\00:13:16.77 and here again with herbal remedies you really have to 00:13:16.80\00:13:19.72 try several if it doesn't work for you then try another one 00:13:19.75\00:13:23.18 and see if it works for you. 00:13:23.21\00:13:24.66 - Yes, I've noticed that a lot of simple remedies will work 00:13:24.72\00:13:27.40 for one person and they just won't work for another. 00:13:27.43\00:13:30.12 - Right! That's true. 00:13:30.15\00:13:31.24 Several other little things that you can try with warts 00:13:31.27\00:13:34.47 and here again sometimes they are effective and 00:13:34.50\00:13:36.11 sometimes they are not, but just depending on your skin type. 00:13:36.14\00:13:39.07 Any type of weed that has a milky substance like milk weed 00:13:39.10\00:13:42.66 or dandelion even has been used, or figs, you can take a fig leaf 00:13:42.69\00:13:48.88 and the little milky stuff that comes out, if you have 00:13:48.91\00:13:51.45 a fig tree in your yard and we do down south 00:13:51.48\00:13:53.87 we like to grow them. 00:13:53.90\00:13:54.95 Put them on the right side of the house and you make sure 00:13:54.99\00:13:57.60 they grow big and you can take one of those fig leafs 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.38 and just smear the milky substance on the wart and 00:14:00.41\00:14:05.77 many that will take the wart right out, and the theory 00:14:05.80\00:14:10.57 behind this is that there are certain properties in this 00:14:10.60\00:14:13.17 milky sap depending on which on it is, of course there are 00:14:13.20\00:14:16.13 various types of weeds that have either an orange sap 00:14:16.16\00:14:19.56 or a white sap, or a yellow sap, that some of these 00:14:19.59\00:14:22.58 properties in the sap are actually the thing that would 00:14:22.61\00:14:25.93 be an anti-viral type effect and would make the wart go 00:14:25.96\00:14:30.67 away over some time. 00:14:30.70\00:14:31.72 So you might have to use it over and over again, 00:14:31.75\00:14:33.55 it's not something you would want to give up on right away 00:14:33.58\00:14:35.53 so put it on maybe two or three times a day, you might have to 00:14:35.56\00:14:38.21 use that 5-7 days or even longer just to see how long 00:14:38.24\00:14:41.37 it would take, but it should be helpful for it, it may not 00:14:41.40\00:14:45.38 necessarily make it go... You might have to use another 00:14:45.41\00:14:47.05 remedy to make it go away but it is certainly something 00:14:47.08\00:14:49.20 that is worth trying. 00:14:49.24\00:14:50.21 - Humm! Very good! Well thank you so much 00:14:50.22\00:14:52.95 and I hope that these suggestions can be helpful 00:14:52.98\00:14:57.41 to you and to your family, thank you Cal. 00:14:57.44\00:15:00.43 Now I have some pictures that I would like to show you, 00:15:00.46\00:15:04.46 I think that these pictures will be explanatory in themselves 00:15:04.49\00:15:10.37 and some of them have nice remedies that can be 00:15:10.40\00:15:15.72 told easily without any elaborate instruction. 00:15:15.75\00:15:21.83 Now the first picture that you will see is one that you will 00:15:21.86\00:15:27.22 have very little that you can do for, you certainly need 00:15:27.25\00:15:30.97 professional help with this and as early as possible. 00:15:31.00\00:15:36.22 This is a melanoma, you will notice that it has a lumpiness 00:15:36.25\00:15:40.48 and a bumpiness of the skin and it also fades out around it 00:15:40.51\00:15:47.39 slightly, giving it the faded silk appearance. 00:15:47.42\00:15:52.38 Sometimes a melanoma will be much more prominent than that 00:15:52.41\00:15:57.08 with the fading out of the melanocytes that are malignant 00:15:57.11\00:16:04.57 and they are migrating in the skin so they fan out 00:16:04.60\00:16:08.66 around the melanoma. 00:16:08.69\00:16:10.41 That needs to be cut out widely and with a wide border of 00:16:10.44\00:16:15.86 normal skin, sometimes even wide enough that the skin 00:16:15.89\00:16:20.64 would need to be grafted. 00:16:20.67\00:16:23.09 Now the next slide that you see will be another skin lesion 00:16:23.12\00:16:29.02 that you will sometimes see, this picture shows a little 00:16:29.05\00:16:34.98 patch of skin, with a little rounded area of reddening 00:16:35.01\00:16:44.93 and some darker parts in the middle, this is an inflamed 00:16:44.96\00:16:51.12 nevus and it also should be removed unless you know 00:16:51.15\00:16:55.76 for certain why the nevus became inflamed, 00:16:55.79\00:16:59.27 (a little mole), and inflamed moles can be seriously sick 00:16:59.30\00:17:08.90 and they can represent a malignancy, and of course 00:17:08.93\00:17:14.24 then should be removed. 00:17:14.27\00:17:15.54 Now the next slide you will see is a slide of a common 00:17:15.57\00:17:21.20 disorder called inertrigo, children tend to have this 00:17:21.23\00:17:25.74 in surfaces that stick together a lot or lay together a lot 00:17:25.77\00:17:31.59 such as these surfaces of the elbow and in an overweight child 00:17:31.62\00:17:37.81 the problem is worse and in this case it actually bleeds. 00:17:37.84\00:17:43.55 Babies necks will sometimes bleed because of inertrigo 00:17:43.58\00:17:48.98 with the folds of the neck sticking together. 00:17:49.01\00:17:51.81 One of the very best treatments for this is to let the child 00:17:51.84\00:17:55.90 or the baby sit in a tub,(in the baby's own tub), 00:17:55.93\00:18:01.65 with a lot of baking soda in the water, 00:18:01.68\00:18:05.23 the baking soda water should be dipped on to the child 00:18:05.26\00:18:11.23 frequently to bathe those surfaces that are inflamed 00:18:11.26\00:18:15.00 and it will often cure the inertrigo in just 00:18:15.03\00:18:20.03 two or three days, older people who have skin surfaces 00:18:20.06\00:18:24.81 are closely applied one to another can be treated 00:18:24.84\00:18:31.62 in the same way because under the breasts, under the arms, 00:18:31.65\00:18:35.76 folds of skin that have a place where one skin surface 00:18:35.79\00:18:41.97 hits another you can get an inertrigo in all of those areas. 00:18:42.00\00:18:46.18 Now I have asked Dr. Don Miller to talk with you some 00:18:46.21\00:18:50.94 about a topic, Dr. Miller are you going to talk with us 00:18:50.97\00:18:54.84 about psoriasis today? 00:18:54.87\00:18:56.36 - Yes, I'm going to talk about psoriasis which is a 00:18:56.39\00:18:58.39 major problem, they usually figure that psoriasis is 00:18:58.42\00:19:02.15 something that is inherited, we don't really know what 00:19:02.18\00:19:04.60 causes it, we don't know how to cure it but we do know 00:19:04.63\00:19:07.59 a few things that can help a person with it. 00:19:07.62\00:19:10.49 There is a sound man here at 3ABN who has Bassett hounds 00:19:10.52\00:19:14.94 and I like Bassett hounds, you know a dog has a smelling 00:19:14.97\00:19:18.82 capacity a million times more acute than a human. 00:19:18.85\00:19:21.66 - Amazing! - And we wonder how can they 00:19:21.69\00:19:23.78 chase those rabbits and humans and whatever else, 00:19:23.81\00:19:25.89 they are smelling the skin cells that are constantly 00:19:25.92\00:19:28.67 flaking off and a human produces skin cells about every 00:19:28.70\00:19:32.09 26-28 days they live and they die and reproduce new ones. 00:19:32.12\00:19:36.04 - So they don't all slough off at once fortunately 00:19:36.07\00:19:39.33 they do one by one. 00:19:39.36\00:19:40.62 - We'd be a little pile on the floor if that were the case. 00:19:40.65\00:19:42.76 But with psoriasis it's every 4-7 days, and so they start 00:19:42.80\00:19:47.97 piling up one on top of each other so we get this 00:19:48.00\00:19:50.09 white thickening of the skin which is a major problem 00:19:50.12\00:19:53.60 and it's itchy and it has a lot of problems with it and so 00:19:53.63\00:19:56.50 what can you do for psoriasis? 00:19:56.53\00:19:58.62 Let's look first at some dietary things, and there is an 00:19:58.65\00:20:02.56 excellent book here, it's called Foods and Their Healing 00:20:02.59\00:20:05.10 Power from the Education and Health library. 00:20:05.13\00:20:07.87 It talks about vegetables, especially those vegetables 00:20:07.90\00:20:12.28 that will make your skin more photo sensitive, 00:20:12.31\00:20:15.09 that means more sensitive to sunlight, things like lettuce 00:20:15.12\00:20:19.30 or celery and they say that if you eat these foods 00:20:19.33\00:20:23.14 and then get a sun bath it will help your psoriasis. 00:20:23.17\00:20:27.37 But you don't want to sun burn, sun burning can make it 00:20:27.40\00:20:30.78 more severe, but just getting a good sunlight after you eat 00:20:30.81\00:20:35.27 these foods, especially a vegetable diet period 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.43 will be very helpful. 00:20:37.46\00:20:38.96 Molasses is another one, molasses is good for many 00:20:38.99\00:20:43.08 things, I like to get good old black strap molasses the 00:20:43.11\00:20:45.98 first through the press, taking a couple of spoonfuls 00:20:46.01\00:20:49.86 stirring it up in warm water and drinking this. 00:20:49.89\00:20:53.09 This is very good for psoriasis, there are some other things, 00:20:53.12\00:20:56.70 Omega 3 fatty acids, and I like to get my Omega 3's from 00:20:56.73\00:21:01.55 things like flax, and that's really the best one, flax seed 00:21:01.58\00:21:05.76 just take the ground up flax seed is a good way to do it. 00:21:05.79\00:21:08.66 If you get flax oil, the thing about oils, 00:21:08.69\00:21:11.50 the better the oils are the less stable they are, 00:21:11.53\00:21:15.08 if you get flax seed oil what I recommend a person do, 00:21:15.11\00:21:18.09 they usually come in a dark bottle any way, 00:21:18.12\00:21:20.10 you keep it in a cool place and express the air out 00:21:20.13\00:21:24.26 of the bottle, and every time you use some express the air 00:21:24.29\00:21:29.03 out so you don't have oxygen getting exposed to it, 00:21:29.06\00:21:32.37 because that degrades and helps oxidize the oil quicker. 00:21:32.40\00:21:35.93 So the Omega 3's are extremely good, walnuts also have Omega 3 00:21:35.96\00:21:40.62 fatty acids, and then vitamin A, we know that vitamin A are in 00:21:40.65\00:21:44.64 dark green leafy vegetables, in orange vegetables and fruits 00:21:44.67\00:21:48.19 so it's nice, God has color coded His medicines. 00:21:48.22\00:21:52.56 - Yes! It makes them more appetizing. 00:21:52.59\00:21:55.07 - And you really can't overdose, I guess you can over eat 00:21:55.10\00:21:57.58 but you can't overdose on Kiwi's and apricots and carrots 00:21:57.61\00:22:02.32 - Squash and mangos, oh, I could over eat on mangos. 00:22:02.35\00:22:05.93 - I could buy those 12 for a dollar down in Zambia, 00:22:05.96\00:22:11.59 that's a great place to be. 00:22:11.62\00:22:13.94 Other things that are good for psoriasis, salt water soaks, 00:22:13.97\00:22:18.62 they say swimming in the ocean because you've got that nice 00:22:18.65\00:22:21.16 combination of salt and minerals but many of us don't live near 00:22:21.19\00:22:24.57 the ocean so just get some sea salt and put a little bit 00:22:24.60\00:22:27.76 of that into your bath water, this is good for soaking off 00:22:27.79\00:22:31.01 some of these lesions which can be very irritating 00:22:31.04\00:22:34.76 to the skin. 00:22:34.79\00:22:35.76 Things that increase, things that are high in tryptopan 00:22:35.77\00:22:39.05 milk, meat, any dairy products is going to be high in tryptopan 00:22:39.08\00:22:44.84 which is going to cause an acceleration in this growth 00:22:44.87\00:22:47.84 of the skin which is going to exacerbate your psoriasis. 00:22:47.87\00:22:52.55 Also saturated fats which again is in your meat products 00:22:52.58\00:22:58.41 and dairy products, lots of... - So you want to leave off 00:22:58.44\00:23:01.19 those things that are from animal origin and emphasize 00:23:01.22\00:23:05.86 those things that are of plant origin, if you have psoriasis. 00:23:05.89\00:23:08.95 - More and more as we get near in this time in the age 00:23:08.98\00:23:13.41 in which we live, I think it is more and more dangerous 00:23:13.44\00:23:17.25 to be imbibing animal products because of all the 00:23:17.28\00:23:20.84 diseases, and then alcohol also exacerbates psoriasis 00:23:20.87\00:23:26.35 and so staying away from alcohol it causes them to itch more 00:23:26.38\00:23:28.85 to be more inflamed, don't itch, if you have psoriasis 00:23:28.88\00:23:32.16 of the scalp we recommend a nice olive oil massage 00:23:32.19\00:23:36.81 get a good olive oil and just massage it in there 00:23:36.84\00:23:39.34 and then hot towel packs for about a half hour 00:23:39.37\00:23:44.21 sort of soak those things and then shampoo but 00:23:44.24\00:23:47.45 don't over shampoo, don't sit there and scratch your head 00:23:47.48\00:23:49.95 to much because this can make the condition worse. 00:23:49.98\00:23:53.28 Putting any type of oil onto... white Vaseline onto these 00:23:53.31\00:23:58.44 psoriasis areas can be good to soften up the skin, 00:23:58.47\00:24:03.05 just soaking then in the salt water will help soak 00:24:03.08\00:24:06.12 some of these things off. 00:24:06.15\00:24:07.50 Doing these things can make the condition better, 00:24:07.53\00:24:10.82 sometimes it is spontaneously goes away, 00:24:10.85\00:24:14.41 and that's a nice thought. - That is good! 00:24:14.44\00:24:17.08 - Now you have a graphic I believe, I think you showed me 00:24:17.11\00:24:21.07 a graphic of a hand with psoriasis. 00:24:21.10\00:24:23.91 - Yes! We have a graphic with a hand on it with psoriasis, 00:24:23.94\00:24:28.33 you can see there just between on the right hand side there 00:24:28.36\00:24:33.15 between the little finger and the finger next to it 00:24:33.18\00:24:36.86 down there in the crevice you can see the red patch and then 00:24:36.89\00:24:40.39 in the thumb, especially the left thumb you see a patch 00:24:40.42\00:24:43.10 of the psoriasis. 00:24:43.13\00:24:44.18 This can be very painful, very unsightly, very itching 00:24:44.21\00:24:48.66 all the time, we find some times it is caused by where 00:24:48.69\00:24:52.29 where you rest a part of your body. 00:24:52.32\00:24:54.22 Whenever you rest your body on anything even sitting on 00:24:54.25\00:24:57.65 a chair, if you sat on a chair without moving you would cut off 00:24:57.68\00:25:00.54 blood supply and pretty soon you are going to have a problem 00:25:00.57\00:25:03.86 in that area, it gets quite sore, so we recommend 00:25:03.89\00:25:06.72 a person increase the circulation to the area. 00:25:06.75\00:25:09.29 The German study shows that a hot water soak for 2 minutes 00:25:09.32\00:25:15.34 and then plunging into cold water for 2 seconds for about 00:25:15.37\00:25:19.41 30 minutes a day is very good for psoriasis, getting that 00:25:19.44\00:25:23.11 blood flow in and out of an area... 00:25:23.14\00:25:25.20 - So the pressure of it against a hard surface is one of the 00:25:25.23\00:25:31.22 things that causes the lesions to develop. 00:25:31.25\00:25:33.54 - Absolutely! - So on the sides of the hand 00:25:33.57\00:25:35.80 on the finger if a person is a typist or a pianist, 00:25:35.83\00:25:42.60 on the elbows of almost any body because almost everybody 00:25:42.63\00:25:47.65 leans the elbows on... The back of the neck 00:25:47.68\00:25:50.47 is another place where psoriasis comes, where people are often 00:25:50.50\00:25:54.44 having a collar that fits tightly, so I guess 00:25:54.47\00:25:57.93 anything that irritates, the sun irritates, you get psoriasis. 00:25:57.96\00:26:00.94 You scratch and it irritates, you get psoriasis, 00:26:00.97\00:26:03.68 of course people already have the psoriasis but they get 00:26:03.71\00:26:07.50 an acute flare- up in those areas. 00:26:07.53\00:26:10.92 - Perfect health requires perfect circulation. 00:26:10.95\00:26:13.53 I once read a book that if you... The man Dr. Paul Brandon 00:26:13.56\00:26:17.40 in the book The Gift of Pain, if you put your finger 00:26:17.43\00:26:19.67 up against a piece of glass, you can look at it, 00:26:19.70\00:26:21.50 you can see it's going to blanche, it's going to 00:26:21.53\00:26:23.28 turn white, and it doesn't feel like anything, 00:26:23.31\00:26:26.43 but if you keep that there for a couple of hours 00:26:26.46\00:26:28.72 it will start to ulcerate because the blood has left 00:26:28.75\00:26:31.38 the area and you are going to start causing some real 00:26:31.41\00:26:33.75 tissue damage, so with psoriasis, any other disease 00:26:33.78\00:26:38.41 we need to make sure that we have good circulation. 00:26:38.44\00:26:40.70 That's getting rid of those saturated fats, 00:26:40.73\00:26:43.86 those animal products is in itself going to help our 00:26:43.89\00:26:46.57 circulation, and then drink plenty of water. 00:26:46.60\00:26:49.39 - Now Dr. Miller for this psoriasis under the fingernail 00:26:49.42\00:26:54.03 as you showed, one thing that I have used for that is 00:26:54.06\00:26:58.66 grapefruit seed extract, which is now available in pharmacies 00:26:58.69\00:27:02.30 everywhere, and just the undiluted grapefruit seed 00:27:02.33\00:27:06.26 extract, I have found that to be very helpful in some cases 00:27:06.29\00:27:09.58 just to put it on and let it soak into the crusty areas. 00:27:09.61\00:27:16.82 - It will also keep people from biting their fingernails. 00:27:16.85\00:27:18.95 - That would because that would be terribly bitter. 00:27:18.98\00:27:20.95 - Yuk-Thank you so much 00:27:20.98\00:27:23.41 I appreciate your talking with us about psoriasis. 00:27:23.44\00:27:26.57 Now the Grapefruit Seed Extract can be used also to take care of 00:27:26.60\00:27:31.26 your colds and flu, it's very good for that and for any 00:27:31.29\00:27:35.24 intestinal inflammation or infection, very good for that 00:27:35.27\00:27:39.30 like peptic ulcers, it's good for that, even Chron's disease 00:27:39.33\00:27:43.80 it can help with that. 00:27:43.83\00:27:44.89 So many of the things that the Lord has given us 00:27:44.92\00:27:48.37 as a natural remedy has many applicable applications. 00:27:48.40\00:27:52.09 I hope these things have been 00:27:52.12\00:27:53.66 God's very special blessing to you. 00:27:53.69\00:27:56.67
