Hello! I grew up in rural South Georgia 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.73 about 33 miles from the nearest hospital because of our 00:00:05.76\00:00:09.81 distance away from good medical care, my parents became quite 00:00:09.84\00:00:10.81 proficient in home remedies. 00:00:10.84\00:00:16.71 Since I grew up with these I know their effectiveness 00:00:16.74\00:00:20.37 I know that in may instances they are the best remedy for 00:00:20.40\00:00:24.31 a certain disorder. 00:00:24.34\00:00:25.32 It won't work for all things but it does work for many 00:00:25.35\00:00:29.01 and where it is applicable, a home remedy is the best remedy 00:00:29.04\00:00:34.03 that we have for that disease. 00:00:34.06\00:00:35.80 We're going to be talking about Home Remedies, some of which 00:00:35.83\00:00:39.12 I think you will never have seen before, 00:00:39.15\00:00:41.20 so we hope you will join us and I know you will 00:00:41.23\00:00:43.75 enjoy the program. 00:00:43.78\00:00:45.14 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health 00:01:05.48\00:01:07.49 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:01:07.52\00:01:10.83 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:01:10.86\00:01:14.93 In most homes you will find a lot of things that are very 00:01:16.05\00:01:22.53 applicable to home remedies. 00:01:22.56\00:01:25.58 Now every home that has water and a source of heat and a 00:01:25.61\00:01:32.32 source of cold and cloths and sometimes some kind of 00:01:32.35\00:01:39.57 irrigation equipment, any home that has these can be 00:01:39.60\00:01:43.02 sure that they know how that they have the equipment to do 00:01:43.05\00:01:47.49 the home remedies. 00:01:47.52\00:01:48.66 Now I have here a very simple home remedy, 00:01:48.69\00:01:52.11 this is a cough syrup, and notice this thick honey, 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.09 see how thick it is. 00:01:56.12\00:01:57.21 This honey is produced in South Georgia, 00:01:57.24\00:02:02.56 it's Gall Berry Honey and as you can see it is quite thick 00:02:04.13\00:02:08.10 but when you put that with some chopped onion, 00:02:08.13\00:02:11.53 just ordinary onion chopped notice how very thin the 00:02:11.56\00:02:17.05 honey gets, the reason for that after 12 hours or so 00:02:17.08\00:02:20.99 it has extracted all the benefits from the onion. 00:02:21.02\00:02:25.11 Now we have there the Quercitin, we have a lot of flavonoids and 00:02:25.14\00:02:29.49 a variety of antioxidants, some antimicrobial substances, 00:02:29.52\00:02:35.50 a lot of things that can be most beneficial for a cough. 00:02:35.53\00:02:40.49 and this is a cough medicine. 00:02:40.53\00:02:43.27 Let me show you what you would do from this point, 00:02:43.30\00:02:46.45 just take a strainer and pour the juice, the onion honey 00:02:46.48\00:02:55.52 pour that into a strainer and strain out the onion 00:02:55.55\00:03:01.11 and then you have the onion honey fluid, you can mash this 00:03:01.14\00:03:08.05 a bit to get it so that you have only the fluid in a cup and then 00:03:08.08\00:03:17.30 it can be stored in the refrigerator. 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.71 Simply store the nice honey water, now when a person has 00:03:19.74\00:03:25.31 a cough, whether it's dry or productive, this can be used 00:03:25.34\00:03:30.37 by the teaspoonful to quell the cough. 00:03:30.40\00:03:34.25 Not very long ago we had a patient who had a cough, 00:03:34.28\00:03:39.22 it was really terrible, and every time she coughed, 00:03:39.25\00:03:42.97 she would take a teaspoonful of this from the refrigerator 00:03:43.00\00:03:46.53 and simply swallow it. 00:03:46.56\00:03:48.16 In seconds her throat would feel better, she would have a 00:03:48.19\00:03:52.70 paroxysm of coughing and in just seconds she would be 00:03:52.73\00:03:58.27 free of cough and go sometimes for half an hour with 00:03:58.30\00:04:02.04 no coughing. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.10 Then another paroxysm of coughing, just almost like 00:04:03.13\00:04:07.26 the whooping cough, take another teaspoonful, and it was 00:04:07.29\00:04:11.41 again quelled in just a matter of seconds. 00:04:11.44\00:04:14.98 Now a close relative of onion is Aloe, Aloe can grow in your 00:04:15.01\00:04:20.94 kitchen or in your living room, it's a beautiful plant. 00:04:20.97\00:04:24.06 You can have it if you live in very warm climates 00:04:24.09\00:04:27.20 you can have it living out of doors, and it has so many 00:04:27.23\00:04:31.15 uses, and I have asked Rhonda Clark who is one of our 00:04:31.18\00:04:35.19 co-workers at Uchee Pines to tell us some of the wonderful 00:04:35.22\00:04:40.40 unexpected uses of Aloe Vera. 00:04:40.43\00:04:43.16 - Oh! There are so many I really enjoyed researching a little bit 00:04:43.19\00:04:46.65 of the unexpected uses of Aloe Vera. 00:04:46.68\00:04:48.66 A typical bottle of Aloe Vera Gel that you can find at a 00:04:48.69\00:04:52.49 Health Food Store, even now in many pharmacies or 00:04:52.52\00:04:55.11 grocery stores has so many uses for she wouldn't believe. 00:04:55.14\00:04:58.65 Some of the ones that I knew of of course that it's wonderful 00:04:58.68\00:05:04.61 for burns, it's wonderful to put on poison ivy or insect bites 00:05:04.64\00:05:09.29 or other irritations of the skin, such as a scrape 00:05:09.32\00:05:12.98 or a small abrasion, but did you know that this also can be 00:05:13.01\00:05:17.60 used as a deodorant. 00:05:17.63\00:05:18.88 It can be used as a hair jel, or a hair conditioner, 00:05:18.91\00:05:22.88 and it even is a wonderful treatment for dandruff 00:05:22.91\00:05:25.64 if you just thickly apply Aloe Vera get to the scalp 00:05:25.67\00:05:28.92 allow it to set for 10 minutes and then shampoo the hair 00:05:28.95\00:05:32.07 as normal, it can help clear up dandruff. 00:05:32.10\00:05:35.04 - And you just sort of work it into the scalp. 00:05:35.07\00:05:37.43 - Work it in good, let it sit and then shampoo your hair 00:05:37.46\00:05:41.15 as normal. 00:05:41.18\00:05:42.15 - Well that sounds interesting. - Yes! You know it was said 00:05:42.16\00:05:44.28 that Cleopatra used as her secret for beautiful skin. 00:05:44.31\00:05:49.04 In Ancient Egypt they used Aloe's in the embalming process 00:05:49.07\00:05:54.11 not to help preserve anything, but just to help keep the 00:05:54.14\00:05:57.21 skin intact Aloe Vera Gel makes a wonderful face moisturizer 00:05:57.24\00:06:01.31 face cream and it has nice microbial killing property 00:06:01.34\00:06:08.56 that makes it useful for individuals with acne's, 00:06:08.59\00:06:10.76 psoriasis, other types of skin conditions that you want to 00:06:10.79\00:06:14.27 keep the skin very clear of bacteria. 00:06:14.30\00:06:16.25 - Do you have anything for wrinkles? 00:06:16.28\00:06:17.65 - No! cream against wrinkles unfortunately. 00:06:17.68\00:06:20.99 - Well I guess I'm proud of all my wrinkles, it indicates that 00:06:21.02\00:06:24.66 I have lived a long time and that's amazing in this age. 00:06:24.69\00:06:28.92 - Yeah, there were some things that surprised me when I was 00:06:28.95\00:06:31.57 doing this, I guess there are some individuals who suffer 00:06:31.60\00:06:34.88 with odor in the belly button of all places and Aloe Vera 00:06:34.91\00:06:39.38 is a wonderful remedy for that. 00:06:39.41\00:06:40.96 Using Aloe Vera gel twice a day in the belly button can help 00:06:40.99\00:06:44.47 reduce irritations or odor in the belly button 00:06:44.50\00:06:47.22 and some other kind of surprising things of Aloe Vera 00:06:47.25\00:06:50.69 that I thought were... 00:06:50.72\00:06:52.57 Oral care, this one really surprised me. 00:06:52.60\00:06:54.55 There is a growing body of evidence of the benefits of 00:06:54.58\00:06:57.52 Aloe Vera gel in many dental procedures. 00:06:57.55\00:06:59.81 It can be used to treat gingivitis or inflammation 00:06:59.84\00:07:03.10 of the gums and that can be either by gargling, rinsing, 00:07:03.13\00:07:07.06 swishing with an aloe Vera juice, or letting the gels sit 00:07:07.09\00:07:11.44 against the gums for a period of time. 00:07:11.47\00:07:13.63 There is even now toothpaste made with Aloe Vera that can 00:07:13.66\00:07:16.78 be useful in fighting against gingivitis, when a tooth has 00:07:16.81\00:07:20.08 been extracted, Aloe Vera can help prevent infection 00:07:20.11\00:07:23.28 in that socket of the extracted tooth it could be... 00:07:23.31\00:07:26.69 - A nice way to put it against the gum is to take a small 00:07:26.72\00:07:34.27 segment of one of the blades of the Aloe, remove the cortex 00:07:34.30\00:07:43.70 the little bark of it from one side and make sure there are 00:07:43.73\00:07:47.59 no thorns projecting from it and then lay that right against 00:07:47.62\00:07:52.96 the gum and then in a few minutes it becomes quite nicely 00:07:52.99\00:07:56.55 soft and molds to the side of the jaw and that makes a 00:07:56.58\00:08:02.32 very nice anti-microbial remedy for a gum boil 00:08:02.35\00:08:07.04 or an abscess tooth. 00:08:07.07\00:08:09.58 - Yeah! -Well I appreciate the opportunity to come and share 00:08:09.61\00:08:13.15 some of these unusual uses of Aloe Vera gel. 00:08:13.18\00:08:15.70 - Well thank you so much, I enjoyed these and I would 00:08:15.73\00:08:18.36 like to try the one with the Aloe Vera shampoo. 00:08:18.39\00:08:21.54 - Yes! - Thank you! 00:08:21.57\00:08:23.40 Now I would like to show you another remedy and this remedy 00:08:23.43\00:08:28.42 is a heating pad, it's a very simple one, you could just buy 00:08:28.45\00:08:34.01 these from a pharmacy or a department store, 00:08:34.04\00:08:36.49 and they should be in every home having electricity. 00:08:36.52\00:08:41.87 If you don't have electricity all is not lost, you can simply 00:08:41.90\00:08:45.69 take a bottle of the appropriate size, fill it with hot water, 00:08:45.72\00:08:49.78 wrap it with a towel and it can be applied in the same way 00:08:49.81\00:08:54.07 to the chest, to the abdomen, to the back, to a knee, 00:08:54.10\00:08:57.90 a foot, and any place where there is pain or discomfort 00:08:57.93\00:09:02.55 it can be nicely used to great advantage it has both immediate 00:09:02.58\00:09:07.94 benefits in pain relief, and it also has long term benefits 00:09:07.97\00:09:12.65 in healing. 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.12 Now I suppose my very favorite remedy is charcoal 00:09:14.15\00:09:18.66 and I have asked Cal Thrash to join me for this 00:09:18.69\00:09:22.54 next demonstration which will be of charcoal remedies. 00:09:22.57\00:09:26.08 - Yes! 00:09:26.11\00:09:27.08 - Cal you have a number of things here I see, 00:09:27.11\00:09:30.67 and I know that you are very familiar with charcoal, 00:09:30.70\00:09:34.31 - Oh yes! - Because you grew up with it. 00:09:34.34\00:09:35.75 - I certainly did, in fact I have some experiences that I 00:09:35.78\00:09:38.39 would like to tell today to our viewers as well. 00:09:38.42\00:09:41.21 Charcoal is an absolutely amazing substance, but it 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.13 doesn't look like a whole lot when we look at it, it's just a 00:09:44.16\00:09:47.01 powder and it's what you expect a black substance, 00:09:47.04\00:09:50.61 and of course what we use is powdered activated charcoal. 00:09:50.64\00:09:54.50 It is quite useful for many external applications and some 00:09:54.53\00:09:58.51 internal ones as well. - Now you said it was activated 00:09:58.54\00:09:59.51 tell us what that means. 00:09:59.54\00:10:03.90 - Activation is a process that charcoal goes through when it 00:10:03.93\00:10:07.91 still in the kiln the steam is injected into the environment 00:10:07.94\00:10:14.16 under pressure and at just the right temperature and the right 00:10:14.19\00:10:16.49 pressure, it actually blows open more holes little surface 00:10:16.52\00:10:20.13 area in the charcoal. - And these little surface areas 00:10:20.16\00:10:23.24 are for what purpose? 00:10:23.27\00:10:24.81 - Well that's to attract poisons to it, 00:10:24.84\00:10:28.09 now I have a graphic that perhaps 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.41 we could show at this time that has actually a picture 00:10:30.44\00:10:34.55 that the tunneling electronic microscope took of charcoal 00:10:34.58\00:10:38.17 surface, and you can see the surface of the carbon there 00:10:38.20\00:10:41.26 under extreme magnification of course, and see the features 00:10:41.29\00:10:46.09 that charcoal has too. 00:10:46.12\00:10:47.84 - It has little ridges and holes and valleys. 00:10:47.87\00:10:50.10 - Right! - I guess the toxins go in all 00:10:50.13\00:10:53.60 of those little valleys and into those holes and are held there. 00:10:53.63\00:10:58.59 - That's part of the beauty of charcoal actually, in fact 00:10:58.62\00:11:02.49 one of the uses of charcoal is to take up and draw poisons 00:11:02.52\00:11:07.85 of all types, drugs fit into that category as well 00:11:07.88\00:11:11.87 so they can be taken up, but toxins and... 00:11:11.90\00:11:14.11 - Toxins from germs. - That's true and in fact 00:11:14.14\00:11:16.90 even bacteria themselves can be actually taken up by charcoal 00:11:16.93\00:11:22.12 some people think though that once the charcoal has actually 00:11:22.15\00:11:24.98 soaked up, if you want to call it these toxins and poisons, 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.14 that it could be squeezed back out again. 00:11:28.17\00:11:30.85 But that is not really what happens with charcoal. 00:11:30.88\00:11:33.34 charcoal works through the process of what we call 00:11:33.37\00:11:36.34 adsorption, you notice I said adsorption and not absorption, 00:11:36.37\00:11:40.95 which is different, it's actually the attachment of 00:11:40.98\00:11:43.93 the toxin to the surface of the carbon itself. 00:11:43.96\00:11:47.47 - So it comes into the charcoal by method of traction. 00:11:47.50\00:11:53.23 - That's correct! - Rather than just being 00:11:53.26\00:11:55.31 absorbed where it's just like a sponge it flows into it. 00:11:55.34\00:11:59.08 - That's right, now the process of taking the poison back out 00:11:59.11\00:12:03.84 of the charcoal is considerably more difficult and usually not 00:12:03.87\00:12:07.59 compatible with life, although it's true that under certain 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.72 circumstances some of the toxins could come out 00:12:10.75\00:12:12.66 but those are very unusual circumstances. 00:12:12.69\00:12:15.46 For instance if a person has been given a drug like Morphine 00:12:15.49\00:12:18.48 or something that actually stops the bowel itself 00:12:18.51\00:12:22.28 and a person may have trouble actually eliminating that 00:12:22.31\00:12:24.90 charcoal and it could cause problems. 00:12:24.93\00:12:26.53 Most people don't have that kind of a problem 00:12:26.56\00:12:28.91 and if they are generally healthy then they won't have 00:12:28.94\00:12:31.34 a problem with eliminating the charcoal and the toxin 00:12:31.37\00:12:35.19 that it took up. 00:12:35.22\00:12:36.19 - Now you look as if you are going to make a 00:12:36.20\00:12:39.34 charcoal compress. 00:12:39.37\00:12:40.44 - Actually I'm going to show some of the uses for external 00:12:40.47\00:12:43.85 uses of charcoal, and I have some of the sizes, 00:12:43.88\00:12:47.25 I will show you some of the sizes of charcoal that we 00:12:47.28\00:12:49.68 actually carry at our book store at Uchee Pines, 00:12:49.71\00:12:53.05 and we bottle this up ourselves. 00:12:53.08\00:12:54.45 Now this one is the largest size we have, that is 21/2 lbs. 00:12:54.48\00:12:58.71 size and it's the easiest probably to use under most 00:12:58.74\00:13:02.39 circumstances for external uses where you need a lot of powder. 00:13:02.42\00:13:06.76 - Such as a brown recluse spider bite. 00:13:06.79\00:13:10.26 - That's correct. 00:13:10.29\00:13:11.26 - It takes up that toxin right through the skin. 00:13:11.27\00:13:13.14 - And we'll be talking about some of those uses too 00:13:13.17\00:13:16.11 as we go along here, I won't be able to show you probably 00:13:16.14\00:13:19.80 that one because that would be quite an intense usage 00:13:19.83\00:13:23.03 of charcoal, but this smaller size is probably the most 00:13:23.06\00:13:27.03 common size, that's the quart size charcoal, and we have 00:13:27.06\00:13:30.92 that as well. 00:13:30.95\00:13:31.92 These are powders and it's powdered activated charcoal, 00:13:31.95\00:13:35.32 and then we have smaller sizes, this one is a tablet and a 00:13:35.35\00:13:41.77 capsule vege-caps, both of which we have at our store 00:13:41.80\00:13:46.54 there at Uchee Pines, and we bottle all of those together. 00:13:46.57\00:13:52.26 - Now would you use charcoal capsules for it's external use 00:13:52.30\00:13:57.48 say making a compress? 00:13:57.51\00:13:59.54 - You could of course, but it is considerably more expensive 00:13:59.57\00:14:02.92 to do it that way. 00:14:02.95\00:14:04.03 Probably the best way to use charcoal the most effectively 00:14:04.06\00:14:08.71 way, the most cost effective way is to use it as the powder, 00:14:08.74\00:14:12.26 you can use it both internally and externally in powder form. 00:14:12.29\00:14:14.38 - So if you are traveling you certainly want to take the 00:14:15.56\00:14:16.53 powder. - You probably want to take some 00:14:16.54\00:14:18.54 along, now I think it's entirely possible that you'd want to have 00:14:18.57\00:14:22.89 capsules and tabs when you go traveling and in my experience 00:14:22.92\00:14:27.64 actually it seems like the most common thing that happens 00:14:27.67\00:14:31.18 to you when you are traveling is some kind of 00:14:31.21\00:14:33.19 gastrointestinal distress. 00:14:33.22\00:14:35.73 - Yes! What can be called Montezuma's Revenge if you 00:14:35.76\00:14:39.86 are going south of the border. 00:14:39.89\00:14:41.12 - Now I have to say that charcoal is very effective 00:14:41.15\00:14:43.67 with these types of gastrointestinal problems, 00:14:43.70\00:14:47.51 and I wouldn't travel without it, it's... 00:14:47.54\00:14:50.48 - Yes, I never travel without it, 00:14:50.51\00:14:51.48 it will save your trip sometimes. 00:14:51.49\00:14:53.46 - Absolutely! Now what I would like to demonstrate today is a 00:14:53.49\00:14:57.27 poultice and for that I would like to ask Arianna Hartsfield 00:14:57.30\00:15:00.41 if she would come and we will show you actually the external 00:15:00.44\00:15:04.79 uses here in kind of a small way because obviously it would be 00:15:04.82\00:15:11.32 very difficult to work with charcoal in a large way 00:15:11.35\00:15:14.15 here at this set. 00:15:14.18\00:15:15.39 I want to show you exactly what I mean by that 00:15:15.42\00:15:18.31 when I add the water to the charcoal you can immediately 00:15:18.34\00:15:23.18 see that charcoal will begin to powder out and it's very 00:15:23.21\00:15:30.73 light, now people have... - Now see this little dust 00:15:30.76\00:15:33.86 coming up there. - And you don't want to stir 00:15:33.89\00:15:36.11 very rapidly, now people have told me that they have tried to 00:15:36.14\00:15:40.20 mix charcoal in various ways they have stirred it very 00:15:40.23\00:15:43.47 quickly and tried to get it mixed up quickly, 00:15:43.50\00:15:46.15 but this is not a quick process at all, you want to really 00:15:46.18\00:15:49.46 take your time when you are adding the water and mixing 00:15:49.49\00:15:52.34 the charcoal. 00:15:52.37\00:15:53.34 One person they told me they had a neat experience 00:15:53.35\00:15:55.68 they put this into the blender and put some water in there 00:15:55.71\00:15:59.46 and turned it on and even after they opened up the top 00:15:59.49\00:16:02.78 it was pretty much everywhere all over the kitchen, 00:16:02.81\00:16:05.94 and so it's something that you want to go very carefully and 00:16:05.97\00:16:09.41 very slowly with, and the mixing process can take a little bit 00:16:09.44\00:16:14.02 of time so don't rush this process at all. 00:16:14.06\00:16:17.16 But I have mixed some up already for you and you can see from 00:16:17.19\00:16:21.18 this little container here about the consistency that I've 00:16:21.21\00:16:25.46 mixed it up, is the consistency of soft melted ice cream here. 00:16:25.49\00:16:30.79 And it does taste wonderful just like that ice cream would 00:16:30.82\00:16:34.46 but this is probably just a little bit thick for the average 00:16:34.49\00:16:39.80 poultice it's not to bad, but you certainly don't want to 00:16:39.83\00:16:42.89 scrimp to much on the water when you are using it because 00:16:42.92\00:16:45.42 you do want it to go ahead and soak through the material 00:16:45.45\00:16:48.19 that you are going to put it on and of course this today 00:16:48.22\00:16:51.88 we are going to use a paper towel which is very easy 00:16:51.91\00:16:55.11 to use for the poultice, so we are just going to spoon this 00:16:55.14\00:16:59.22 on to the paper towel material itself and it will begin to come 00:16:59.25\00:17:04.11 through the paper towel as you spoon it on 00:17:04.14\00:17:06.79 and of course you can make it fairly large whatever the sizes 00:17:06.82\00:17:10.35 that you need to be able to take up the surface of the 00:17:10.38\00:17:13.56 problem that you have and we'll just assume that 00:17:13.59\00:17:16.70 Arianna has a bug bite that she is having some 00:17:16.73\00:17:21.51 little bit of inflammation, maybe a little bit of infection 00:17:21.54\00:17:25.03 there. - There it is right there. 00:17:25.06\00:17:26.76 and you want to try to take all of this up with the charcoal 00:17:26.79\00:17:29.11 so we are going to put that right on to the surface of 00:17:29.14\00:17:32.15 the area and cover it well, so that you make sure you have 00:17:32.18\00:17:35.76 plenty of area covered with the charcoal. 00:17:35.79\00:17:38.94 Don't scrimp in this area, this is not where you want to 00:17:38.97\00:17:41.31 scrimp at all, you want to make sure you cover plenty of 00:17:41.34\00:17:44.29 area with that charcoal poultice, then we take some 00:17:44.32\00:17:47.91 plastic wrap, the regular good stretchy kind is good, 00:17:47.94\00:17:51.52 and we can cover our charcoal poultice with our stretch wrap 00:17:51.55\00:17:57.51 and of course this is probably way to much for the 00:17:57.54\00:18:01.75 average poultice, but it's to show you exactly what 00:18:01.78\00:18:05.26 you would want to do. 00:18:05.29\00:18:06.26 You probably could use less, just enough to cover the 00:18:06.27\00:18:10.56 charcoal poultice itself, and you can take some tape... 00:18:10.59\00:18:13.70 The best thing actually is to take some paper tape 00:18:13.73\00:18:17.77 the kind of surgical tape that you find and actually 00:18:17.80\00:18:20.44 tape the edges around like this, and of course that keeps 00:18:20.47\00:18:25.09 the charcoal from coming out the side and it makes it so that 00:18:25.12\00:18:30.53 the person can wear this for quite some time, 00:18:30.56\00:18:33.03 maybe several hours without having any problem at all 00:18:33.06\00:18:35.90 with the charcoal leaking out around the edge. 00:18:35.93\00:18:38.94 - Maybe even wear it over night. 00:18:38.97\00:18:40.80 - It certainly can be worn over night. 00:18:40.83\00:18:42.46 - Or a couple of days if necessary. 00:18:42.49\00:18:43.78 - But depending on what it is this poultice could be used for 00:18:43.81\00:18:48.97 an hour or two, or up to twelve or so hours, 00:18:49.00\00:18:54.50 but you wouldn't want to keep it on for to terribly long 00:18:54.53\00:18:57.21 because it could begin to cause a little bit of a problem 00:18:57.24\00:19:01.15 being wet there, once the charcoal has pretty much all the 00:19:01.18\00:19:05.59 surface area has been used then it's taken up whatever 00:19:05.62\00:19:09.54 it needs to, you need to go ahead and take that one off 00:19:09.57\00:19:11.22 and if the problem still exists then you want to do that 00:19:11.25\00:19:15.17 all over again, start with another charcoal poultice 00:19:15.20\00:19:18.15 and continue to do it. 00:19:18.18\00:19:19.44 Now we talked about Brown Recluse spider bites, 00:19:19.47\00:19:21.46 Brown Recluse spider bites are quite a problem in that they can 00:19:21.49\00:19:26.34 actually cause a necrosis or death of the tissue all the way 00:19:26.37\00:19:30.97 down to the bone in a cone shaped area, and there is no 00:19:31.00\00:19:34.69 real effective way to treat Brown Recluse spider bites 00:19:34.72\00:19:38.79 except for using charcoal. 00:19:38.82\00:19:40.37 They use steroids and just excision of the tissue 00:19:40.40\00:19:43.25 and so forth, but it can cause a real problem and continue 00:19:43.28\00:19:46.60 to cause problems on through until the person gets 00:19:46.63\00:19:51.12 skin grafts which sometimes will take and sometimes because 00:19:51.15\00:19:53.91 of the inflammation that is involved in this they can 00:19:53.94\00:19:56.44 slough off and cause a problem and be a real tough issue 00:19:56.47\00:20:00.40 in fact it can even cause amputation of certain limbs 00:20:00.43\00:20:04.12 because of the Brown Recluse bite. 00:20:04.15\00:20:06.21 This treatment that we've just shown you of course 00:20:06.24\00:20:09.30 considerably bigger area that you would want to make your 00:20:09.33\00:20:12.72 charcoal poultice, and you can use a cotton piece of sheet 00:20:12.75\00:20:16.78 or something that you could put it on rather than a 00:20:16.81\00:20:19.79 paper towel, if you would like to use it over it's something 00:20:19.82\00:20:22.35 that you can do, but certainly with a Brown Recluse bite 00:20:22.38\00:20:25.85 you want to change that poultice probably once every couple 00:20:25.88\00:20:29.01 of hours at the very most, maybe even more often than that, 00:20:29.04\00:20:32.82 to give the opportunity to take up as much of this poison 00:20:32.85\00:20:36.88 as possible and take it away so that it is not something 00:20:36.91\00:20:40.29 that the body has to deal with and the body can focus on 00:20:40.32\00:20:44.00 healing the Brown Recluse bite rather than... 00:20:44.03\00:20:46.57 - I remember a patient that you had one time who had a 00:20:46.60\00:20:50.78 Brown Recluse spider bite on the leg and it was a week 00:20:50.81\00:20:56.84 or so before the patient came for the poultice and yet it was 00:20:56.87\00:21:04.86 healed but it took quite awhile, it took what was it 00:21:04.89\00:21:07.44 5 or 6 weeks? - It took well over a month 00:21:07.47\00:21:10.40 in fact it was more like about 3 months that the person was 00:21:10.43\00:21:14.29 dealing with this problem. 00:21:14.32\00:21:15.63 So the faster that you can actually get the poultice 00:21:15.66\00:21:18.72 the charcoal to the site of the bite, the better, 00:21:18.75\00:21:22.11 and that of course includes bee stings or anything else 00:21:22.14\00:21:24.57 that a person is having any kind of reaction to. 00:21:24.60\00:21:26.85 - Very good, how about a snake bite, would you use it for 00:21:26.88\00:21:29.38 a snake bite? 00:21:29.41\00:21:30.38 I wouldn't hesitate to use it for a snake bite, 00:21:30.39\00:21:32.29 I have never had the opportunity to actually 00:21:32.32\00:21:34.59 do that and so, I'm not really certain the procedure other than 00:21:34.62\00:21:38.41 just simply using as much charcoal as is possible, 00:21:38.44\00:21:42.03 I think I would also use it internally as well as externally 00:21:42.06\00:21:45.50 in that type of instance. 00:21:45.53\00:21:46.81 - Yes, I'm sure I would too but I still think that the 00:21:46.84\00:21:50.94 anti-venom might be the good route to go, 00:21:50.97\00:21:53.34 maybe using both the charcoal for the first aid and 00:21:53.37\00:21:56.62 the anti-venom at a later time. 00:21:56.65\00:21:59.00 - That's correct, now we have one other graphic that we want 00:21:59.03\00:22:01.44 to show you and that's a picture of a young fellow that is in a 00:22:01.47\00:22:05.44 bathtub that has charcoal in it. 00:22:05.47\00:22:08.05 Now what was happening here was the individual involved 00:22:08.08\00:22:12.82 had the chicken pox and you just draw a bath full of water 00:22:12.85\00:22:16.95 and put some charcoal in it and you don't have to necessarily 00:22:16.98\00:22:20.25 put a certain amount, but a cup or two in the bath, 00:22:20.28\00:22:25.55 it helps to bring about the relief from the itching, 00:22:25.58\00:22:28.11 and the little boy there was saying, "it doesn't itch 00:22:28.14\00:22:30.57 any more" after only a minute of being in the charcoal bath. 00:22:30.60\00:22:33.83 - It certainly looks messy. - It is quite messy, and it's 00:22:33.86\00:22:36.43 not something that you would want to do every single day, 00:22:36.46\00:22:38.32 but I can tell you this that if a person did have a 00:22:38.35\00:22:41.57 snake bite or something that was a serious problem, 00:22:41.60\00:22:44.27 I certainly wouldn't hesitate to put their whole affected area 00:22:44.30\00:22:48.03 if it was their arm or leg, most of these snake bites are 00:22:48.06\00:22:50.76 around the leg area where the snake has actually gotten 00:22:50.79\00:22:53.40 the person as they walk along. 00:22:53.43\00:22:54.76 I wouldn't hesitate to put that whole limb right into 00:22:54.79\00:22:58.72 a bucket or even put them in the bath tub full of charcoal 00:22:58.75\00:23:01.96 because that certainly would give the opportunity 00:23:01.99\00:23:04.57 for as much skin area as possible to take that toxin 00:23:04.60\00:23:07.32 right out of the body. 00:23:07.35\00:23:08.32 - Now I know of three instances where really serious snake bites 00:23:08.33\00:23:12.29 have been treated with charcoal in field situations 00:23:12.32\00:23:15.74 and so I wouldn't hesitate to do it, and to rely on it 00:23:15.77\00:23:19.85 in a field situation. But if I had the anti-venom 00:23:19.88\00:23:23.35 I think I would probably not have the courage to just use 00:23:23.38\00:23:27.04 the charcoal alone. 00:23:27.07\00:23:28.04 - I'm not sure I would either but certainly it has been 00:23:28.05\00:23:30.68 used effectively in stories that I've heard, especially with 00:23:30.71\00:23:34.02 animals where an animal was treated that way and 00:23:34.05\00:23:36.62 seemed to be just fine the next day so I'm not sure 00:23:36.65\00:23:40.12 that it's not effective but like you I'm not certain that I 00:23:40.15\00:23:43.77 would rely only on that one. 00:23:43.80\00:23:46.70 - Well thank you so much I appreciate this very nice 00:23:46.73\00:23:49.75 discussion of charcoal. 00:23:49.78\00:23:53.09 Now there are so many other remedies that you can use 00:23:53.12\00:23:57.19 and maybe I will ask Dr. Don Miller to come next 00:23:57.22\00:24:03.17 and show you some remedies and what have you here Dr. Miller? 00:24:03.20\00:24:09.03 You always have nice things that you talk about. 00:24:09.06\00:24:13.37 - Well, I travel around a lot but you know I was just thinking 00:24:13.40\00:24:15.28 as I was listening to Rhonda and Cal's presentation 00:24:15.31\00:24:18.81 Cleopatra used Aloe Vera for her youth and she needed 00:24:18.84\00:24:21.67 some of Cal's charcoal for her Asp bite there at the end. 00:24:21.70\00:24:25.44 - Oh! That's right, history would have been changed. 00:24:25.47\00:24:29.72 - Maybe! You know I travel a lot and here are some 00:24:29.75\00:24:34.68 charcoal tablets I bought in Ukraine. 00:24:34.71\00:24:36.87 - Oh yes! Ok I feel them in there. 00:24:36.90\00:24:39.19 - Where ever you go, it's amazing how other countries 00:24:39.22\00:24:42.80 have a lot more of the simple remedies and charcoal is very 00:24:42.83\00:24:46.47 easy to find, especially in Eastern Europe and 00:24:46.50\00:24:49.70 other countries, but what I wanted to show you was 00:24:49.73\00:24:53.06 my little travel kit, I basically have a mind towards 00:24:53.09\00:24:56.46 travel because when we travel we have to have it, 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.92 and that's why these come in so handy it's hard to mix a 00:24:58.95\00:25:01.57 charcoal poultice or a charcoal slurry when you are 00:25:01.60\00:25:04.81 36,000 feet and making a mess all over the place. 00:25:04.84\00:25:07.50 So a few tablets in the mouth chewed up, and you have to, 00:25:07.53\00:25:10.87 I like to chew them up because the more you break them down 00:25:10.90\00:25:14.64 the more they get to work. 00:25:14.67\00:25:15.84 - And then if you got anything in the mouth it helps with that. 00:25:15.87\00:25:18.95 - Absolutely! - Bad breath to gum boils. 00:25:18.98\00:25:21.26 - May sort of freak the stewardess out when she sees 00:25:21.29\00:25:23.77 all the black in your teeth. - It's also for a sore throat. 00:25:23.80\00:25:26.38 - It's good for whitening the teeth if you can get it off the 00:25:26.41\00:25:28.21 teeth, which you do with a toothbrush. 00:25:28.24\00:25:29.96 My goal when I travel is not to get sick in the first place 00:25:29.99\00:25:36.49 and charcoal is great to sit there and take care of that, 00:25:36.52\00:25:38.66 Montezuma's Revenge, but why not try to prevent Montezuma's 00:25:38.69\00:25:42.56 Revenge in the very first place. 00:25:42.60\00:25:43.85 Having been in the Marine Corp for 14 years maybe Montezuma's 00:25:43.88\00:25:47.29 a little bit more aiming at me, so I carry little things called 00:25:47.32\00:25:50.44 Wet Ones, there are various different types, this is a 00:25:50.47\00:25:53.58 Wet One. - One of the best ways to avoid 00:25:53.61\00:25:55.88 a cold, keep your hands clean. 00:25:55.91\00:25:57.84 You touch your eyes, and your nose, and your mouth you 00:25:57.87\00:26:00.69 won't be transferring germs. 00:26:00.72\00:26:02.16 - These are some I bought in Ukraine although they are 00:26:02.19\00:26:04.99 in English, but I bought those in Ukraine. 00:26:05.02\00:26:08.66 I use this for many many different things, if you are 00:26:08.69\00:26:11.67 traveling and you are in a situation where you use the 00:26:11.70\00:26:14.61 toilet and maybe the toilet paper is not adequate or 00:26:14.64\00:26:18.52 whatever else, these are very nice, very soothing, 00:26:18.55\00:26:21.16 cleaning your hands after anything that you do. 00:26:21.19\00:26:24.16 Before you eat, sometimes I even wipe my food down with it 00:26:24.19\00:26:27.64 you may catch a little bit of what is on the cloth but 00:26:27.67\00:26:30.42 I would rather have a little bit of that chemical 00:26:30.45\00:26:32.46 than whatever that virus or bacteria or whatever else 00:26:32.49\00:26:36.00 might kill me. 00:26:36.03\00:26:37.42 I carry, these are very nice I took a bunch of these one time 00:26:37.45\00:26:44.08 down to Africa for my students and I kept one set for myself 00:26:44.11\00:26:47.18 this is a pair of tweezers with a magnifying glass attached 00:26:47.21\00:26:51.45 to it for when you get those splinters or other things that 00:26:51.48\00:26:56.12 might be giving you problems that way you don't have to try 00:26:56.15\00:26:59.93 to hold a magnifying glass, you just got it all right there 00:26:59.96\00:27:03.95 and you can pick out your splinter or thorn or 00:27:03.98\00:27:08.59 whatever else it might be, very nice with the magnifying glass 00:27:08.62\00:27:14.91 and so I like to carry a piece of equipment like that. 00:27:14.94\00:27:17.38 When I'm traveling you know we talk about the laws of health 00:27:17.41\00:27:20.65 how important sleep is and sometimes it's hard to get 00:27:20.68\00:27:23.87 a good night's rest, or a good flight rest and so I like 00:27:23.90\00:27:27.24 to carry with me some earplugs, keep them around my neck 00:27:27.27\00:27:32.79 they are always there, I like this type because if one falls 00:27:32.82\00:27:35.38 out it's not going to fall on the floor and I can't find it 00:27:35.41\00:27:37.49 and so these are very nice mosquito protectors to you 00:27:37.52\00:27:40.00 can't hear the little fellow. 00:27:40.03\00:27:42.41 - Very good! Well thank you Dr. Miller I appreciate your 00:27:42.44\00:27:45.58 showing us your kit, and with these simple things 00:27:45.61\00:27:49.85 we hope that you will live much more successfully 00:27:49.88\00:27:52.45 in this diseased world. 00:27:52.48\00:27:54.99
