Hello, as with most things in medicine and anatomy 00:00:01.98\00:00:06.00 and health, we're learning new things all the time 00:00:06.03\00:00:09.61 and the heart is no exception. 00:00:09.64\00:00:12.38 Everything from new foods that can keep us from 00:00:12.41\00:00:17.20 coagulating the blood inside the blood vessels to new testing 00:00:17.23\00:00:20.89 things, we'd like to talk with you about these that we know 00:00:20.92\00:00:24.43 you'll love the information that we have and I'm sure 00:00:24.46\00:00:28.81 you will appreciate my guests, we hope you will join us. 00:00:28.84\00:00:31.89 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health 00:00:52.21\00:00:54.53 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:54.56\00:00:57.79 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:57.82\00:01:01.30 I think one of the most distressing problems 00:01:01.33\00:01:07.01 that I run into is that of how to lower the cholesterol 00:01:07.04\00:01:11.83 in a person who's ordinary measures don't work well. 00:01:11.86\00:01:17.60 So I would like to invite you to come with me and I would like to 00:01:17.63\00:01:22.57 introduce you to my first guest who is Rhonda Clark, 00:01:22.60\00:01:27.18 Rhonda, welcome to the program today. 00:01:27.21\00:01:30.32 - Thank you! 00:01:30.35\00:01:31.34 - And I'm happy that you are going to talk with us on 00:01:31.37\00:01:33.43 how to lower the cholesterol. 00:01:33.46\00:01:35.13 - Yes! 00:01:35.16\00:01:36.13 - I get calls from time to time and I'm sure you do too 00:01:36.14\00:01:38.85 at Uchee Pines, about how to get the cholesterol down. 00:01:38.88\00:01:44.26 I've tried this, I've tried that I've been on this kind of diet 00:01:44.29\00:01:48.95 and that kind of diet, I've taken this kind of medicine 00:01:48.98\00:01:52.41 and it's still high. 00:01:52.44\00:01:55.07 How do you help them? 00:01:55.10\00:01:57.75 Well I have some things to recommend and it's a blessing, 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.53 simple lifestyle measures can make a big difference 00:02:00.56\00:02:03.34 in one's cholesterol level. 00:02:03.37\00:02:04.85 So let me share with you some the things I brought with 00:02:04.88\00:02:07.92 me today, one of the things that we know commonly 00:02:07.95\00:02:11.17 about lowering the cholesterol is to lower the fats in our 00:02:11.20\00:02:13.75 diet and it makes a difference the types of fats that we take 00:02:13.78\00:02:16.97 out of our diet. 00:02:17.00\00:02:17.97 The two big enemies when it comes to our cholesterol count 00:02:17.99\00:02:21.78 are saturated fats and trans fats, you may know trans fats 00:02:21.81\00:02:27.36 by another term, partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated 00:02:27.39\00:02:31.66 fats, these are very contributory to the development 00:02:31.69\00:02:35.02 of elevated cholesterol levels and should be eliminated from 00:02:35.05\00:02:38.30 the diet. 00:02:38.33\00:02:39.30 On the other hand, some beneficial fats may lower the 00:02:39.31\00:02:43.13 cholesterol, these are the fats that we find in whole plant 00:02:43.16\00:02:46.88 foods, such as nuts, olives, avocados, the nuts that are 00:02:46.91\00:02:52.01 especially of benefit are almonds, pecans and walnuts. 00:02:52.04\00:02:56.59 Several studies have been done on the use of almonds 00:02:56.62\00:02:59.69 to lower the cholesterol and have been very encouraging, 00:02:59.72\00:03:03.28 so these should be included in moderation in a healthy diet 00:03:03.31\00:03:06.80 to lower cholesterol. 00:03:06.83\00:03:08.34 All plant based diet makes a big difference, any product that was 00:03:08.37\00:03:14.05 made by an animal or is an animal that we take into our 00:03:14.08\00:03:17.18 diet will give us cholesterol. 00:03:17.21\00:03:18.91 When we go to a strictly plant based diet our cholesterol can 00:03:18.94\00:03:23.62 very nicely come down. 00:03:23.65\00:03:25.50 There also is an important aspect of a plant based diet, 00:03:25.53\00:03:30.13 it's helpful for us in lowering cholesterol, and that's it's 00:03:30.16\00:03:32.91 fiber content, when we eat a high fiber diet, we trap bile 00:03:32.94\00:03:38.59 which holds cholesterol and excrete it from the body. 00:03:38.62\00:03:42.23 The liver is excellent at recycling bile and just building 00:03:42.26\00:03:46.48 the cholesterol, making cholesterol for us when we help 00:03:46.51\00:03:50.13 eliminate more bile by eating a high fat diet the cholesterol 00:03:50.16\00:03:54.64 is used then in making more new bile, helping to lower the blood 00:03:54.67\00:03:58.59 cholesterol level. 00:03:58.62\00:04:00.28 Another tip is to spend time in the sunlight every day, 00:04:00.31\00:04:04.04 sunlight as it strikes our skin manufactures vitamin D 00:04:04.08\00:04:08.90 in the manufacturing of this vitamin D, cholesterol is 00:04:08.93\00:04:12.56 utilized, as that cholesterol is used, the skin needs to 00:04:12.59\00:04:15.90 pull more cholesterol from our blood to continue making 00:04:15.93\00:04:19.44 vitamin D. 00:04:19.47\00:04:20.44 So spending 20 minutes or more of sunlight on the skin 00:04:20.45\00:04:24.14 every day is very beneficial in lowering cholesterol. 00:04:24.17\00:04:27.38 One study showed that a two hour sun bath lowered total 00:04:27.41\00:04:31.99 cholesterol levels 13%, so this can be very beneficial 00:04:32.02\00:04:36.72 in your over all program. 00:04:36.75\00:04:38.05 I wanted to share some herbs too that can be beneficial in 00:04:38.08\00:04:42.11 lowering cholesterol, garlic, taking garlic in the diet 00:04:42.14\00:04:46.29 regularly can help lower cholesterol and flax seed, 00:04:46.32\00:04:50.48 these contain some of the beneficial fats that we 00:04:50.51\00:04:53.05 mentioned as well as fiber, which are both helpful in 00:04:53.08\00:04:56.98 lowering cholesterol. 00:04:57.01\00:04:58.08 Another interesting herb, actually a resin called Google 00:04:58.11\00:05:03.18 can lower cholesterol as can red rice yeast, 00:05:03.21\00:05:07.77 these can be found at your health food store, 00:05:07.80\00:05:10.06 and can be taken according to package instructions 00:05:10.09\00:05:13.39 to lower cholesterol. 00:05:13.42\00:05:14.59 One other interesting thing I wanted to mention in 00:05:14.62\00:05:18.44 lowering cholesterol, and that is a particular type of food, 00:05:18.47\00:05:22.56 those foods that are high in a substance called plant sterols 00:05:22.59\00:05:27.01 or plant stanols, these are plant steroids that help 00:05:27.04\00:05:31.75 inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol or the building of 00:05:31.78\00:05:35.31 cholesterol in our liver. 00:05:35.34\00:05:37.27 Foods that are high in plant stanols or sterols include 00:05:37.30\00:05:41.72 potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, soy products, celery, all of the 00:05:41.75\00:05:49.73 lettuces, peaches, blueberries, and apples, some of my favorite 00:05:49.76\00:05:55.22 foods and I'm sure some of your favorite foods as well. 00:05:55.25\00:05:57.68 - Yes! I like to hear blueberries coming up 00:05:57.72\00:05:59.07 because blueberries are so tasty and there are so many 00:05:59.10\00:06:02.12 dishes that they fit into well. - Uhuh! 00:06:03.83\00:06:04.80 - All the way from a smoothie to a crisp and breads that are 00:06:04.81\00:06:08.01 made with it. - And muffins and pancakes. 00:06:08.04\00:06:10.74 - Yes! They're not only delightful to look at, 00:06:10.77\00:06:14.58 but they are delightful to eat and delightful to work with. 00:06:14.61\00:06:17.60 - Indeed! - And of course they have 00:06:17.63\00:06:19.22 so many health benefits. - Yes! 00:06:19.25\00:06:21.41 You know I found an interesting study in my research for this 00:06:21.44\00:06:24.24 and this was done in 2003. 00:06:24.27\00:06:26.36 They took two groups of people and put them one on a 00:06:26.39\00:06:30.20 cholesterol lowering medication called Lovastatin and the 00:06:30.23\00:06:33.79 other group went of a lifestyle program where they had 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.31 an ounce of raw almonds in their diet every day, 00:06:36.34\00:06:39.73 they increased the fiber in their diet, they ate foods high 00:06:39.76\00:06:44.19 in plant sterols, they got regular exercise, 00:06:44.22\00:06:48.28 another important factor in lowering cholesterol. 00:06:48.31\00:06:50.82 These individuals in over four weeks of following this program 00:06:50.85\00:06:54.81 had the same, in fact just slightly higher results, they 00:06:54.84\00:06:59.52 lowered their cholesterol equally as well, or 00:06:59.56\00:07:02.39 actually a little bit lower I should say instead of higher 00:07:02.42\00:07:04.73 as the medication and had none of the harmful side effects, 00:07:04.76\00:07:08.97 in fact they had the benefits of these plants to the other 00:07:09.00\00:07:12.51 systems of their body. 00:07:12.54\00:07:13.85 So lifestyle means certainly can be effective in lowering 00:07:13.88\00:07:17.10 cholesterol, I will mention one other supplement that I happened 00:07:17.13\00:07:21.17 to cross in my research and this one I am not familiar with 00:07:21.20\00:07:23.96 this is new but the research is rather interesting, it's a plant 00:07:23.99\00:07:26.82 alcohol called policosanol found at the health food store 00:07:26.85\00:07:31.17 it comes from sugar cane or yams. 00:07:31.20\00:07:34.17 This substance is especially effective in lowering the LDL 00:07:34.20\00:07:39.25 the low density lipoprotein type of cholesterol or what we 00:07:39.28\00:07:43.58 commonly know as our bad cholesterol. 00:07:43.61\00:07:46.18 After taking policosanol for 6-8 weeks the subjects 00:07:46.21\00:07:51.70 in the study lowered their LDL cholesterol a range from 11-27%, 00:07:51.73\00:07:57.19 rather interesting I thought. 00:07:57.22\00:07:59.35 - Yes, I've talked with a physician who has had some 00:07:59.38\00:08:05.34 experience with that and he was quite charmed with the 00:08:05.37\00:08:08.08 thought that this plant substance could from just 00:08:08.11\00:08:13.18 sugar cane and yams could have such a beneficial effect 00:08:13.21\00:08:17.65 on peoples cholesterol. 00:08:17.68\00:08:19.08 - Now he may have mentioned to you there is one precaution 00:08:19.11\00:08:22.95 in taking this is that is at its higher doses it has a 00:08:22.98\00:08:26.48 blood thinning component to it as well, now that can be 00:08:26.51\00:08:29.34 helpful if you are not on a blood thinning medication, 00:08:29.37\00:08:32.28 but if you do take an anti-coagulant 00:08:32.31\00:08:34.53 a blood thinning medication, you may want to stay away from 00:08:34.56\00:08:37.59 the highest doses of this or at least watch for any signs 00:08:37.62\00:08:41.16 of excessive bleeding, like bruises that you can't explain. 00:08:41.19\00:08:44.78 - Or blood in the urine or blood in the bowel movement. 00:08:44.81\00:08:48.71 - Yes, these would be... 00:08:48.74\00:08:50.16 - Or easy bleeding of the nose or whatever. 00:08:50.19\00:08:52.78 Very good now cholesterol is not the only fat that can be high 00:08:52.81\00:09:01.15 that can cause the heart a problem. 00:09:01.18\00:09:03.23 - Yes! There is also triglyceride. 00:09:03.26\00:09:05.83 - Oh indeed! 00:09:05.86\00:09:07.18 - Do you have people a lot who ask you about that? 00:09:07.38\00:09:11.44 - Surprisingly a great number, it seems some people will call 00:09:11.47\00:09:15.41 and say that their cholesterol count is really ok but their 00:09:15.44\00:09:18.58 triglycerides are so high, and have asked what can we do 00:09:18.61\00:09:22.19 to get our triglyceride level down. 00:09:22.22\00:09:23.67 The same things that we have recommended for cholesterol 00:09:23.70\00:09:27.62 can also lower triglycerides, but I want to add a couple 00:09:27.65\00:09:30.75 of other suggestions. 00:09:30.78\00:09:32.24 One triglycerides are also elevated when we have 00:09:32.27\00:09:36.44 an abundance of carbohydrates in our diet, especially the 00:09:36.47\00:09:39.62 refined simple sugars, eliminate the refined products from 00:09:39.66\00:09:44.07 your diet, and I think you will be pleased to see your 00:09:44.10\00:09:46.64 triglyceride coming down. 00:09:46.67\00:09:48.19 Another thing to recommend, a surprising little study that 00:09:48.22\00:09:53.05 was done on kiwi fruit. - Oh yes! 00:09:53.08\00:09:55.45 They had individuals eat two to three kiwis a day and in 00:09:55.88\00:09:59.49 21 days these folks all saw decreases in 00:09:59.52\00:10:02.26 their triglycerides. 00:10:02.29\00:10:03.77 - Oh I like that treatment. - Yes! A very nice treatment 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.15 indeed, and some theorize the vitamin C in which these 00:10:06.18\00:10:09.18 little fruits are so high in may have had a component in 00:10:09.21\00:10:12.36 lowering the triglyceride level. 00:10:12.39\00:10:13.93 I wanted to make one final thought that I want to mention 00:10:13.96\00:10:18.55 to, not only about carbohydrate intake and fat intake but 00:10:18.58\00:10:21.79 when we overeat in general, even of healthful foods 00:10:21.82\00:10:25.80 we can see elevations in our triglyceride level. 00:10:25.83\00:10:28.41 So eating in moderation, following a two meal plan 00:10:28.44\00:10:32.38 may be just the thing that will finally bring your triglyceride 00:10:32.41\00:10:36.17 level down to a healthy value, a healthy range. 00:10:36.20\00:10:40.02 - Very good, thank you so much Rhonda. 00:10:40.05\00:10:42.12 - Thank you for having me. - I appreciate it. 00:10:42.15\00:10:43.60 Now we have another aspect of this thing of cholesterol 00:10:43.63\00:10:50.77 that I would like you to know and that is HDL and LDL and IDL 00:10:50.80\00:10:57.23 and VLDL, and I have a chart that I think will make this 00:10:57.26\00:11:01.69 a little clearer for you so let me just show you 00:11:01.72\00:11:06.30 my chart and see if this doesn't make this clearer. 00:11:06.33\00:11:10.45 Here is a fat globule with a fatty inner core and an 00:11:10.48\00:11:18.60 outer core of phospholipids and cholesterol in the 00:11:18.63\00:11:24.48 little valleys between the rounded portions of the 00:11:24.51\00:11:29.61 phospholipids, of course this is just a schematic drawing 00:11:29.64\00:11:33.16 and here is a little portion of the fat molecule taken up 00:11:33.19\00:11:41.51 so that you can see the inside. 00:11:41.54\00:11:43.06 Just the very structure of this is interesting, notice how the 00:11:43.09\00:11:47.25 artist has put this with hair pins showing that this part 00:11:47.28\00:11:51.42 is always on the outside, and this part is always on the 00:11:51.45\00:11:55.25 inside, interesting structure chemically speaking. 00:11:55.28\00:11:59.33 Then on the surface there are attachment sites for substances 00:11:59.36\00:12:07.78 that can help to remove the cholesterol from the body, 00:12:07.81\00:12:12.84 now if you will look at this portion of the chart, 00:12:12.87\00:12:16.70 here is the HDL, high density lipoprotein, and you can see 00:12:16.73\00:12:22.59 that these are small, these are a little larger, 00:12:22.62\00:12:26.37 these larger yet and these are LDL and the IDL and the VLDL 00:12:26.40\00:12:34.95 now all of these are different forms of lipoprotein, 00:12:34.98\00:12:41.93 and the lipoprotein as we saw here the phospholipids, 00:12:41.96\00:12:46.75 these are the ones that can carry the cholesterol 00:12:46.78\00:12:51.50 so the cholesterol gets into the HDL and can be taken out 00:12:51.53\00:12:58.01 of the body in that way. 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.21 Here is a cell which can take up cholesterol having the 00:13:00.24\00:13:07.58 cholesterol born into these little pits which can go into 00:13:07.61\00:13:13.63 the cell and the cell then recycles these little portions 00:13:13.66\00:13:19.74 of cholesterol, so this can help you some what we can make 00:13:19.77\00:13:23.97 cholesterol inside the body in the liver or we can take it 00:13:24.00\00:13:28.96 in with the food and it is absorbed through the intestinal 00:13:28.99\00:13:33.12 tract and in this way we can see that cholesterol is indeed 00:13:33.15\00:13:38.34 quite a study itself, not a simple thing of I've got high 00:13:38.37\00:13:43.04 blood cholesterol but what form of high blood cholesterol 00:13:43.07\00:13:46.50 do you have. 00:13:46.53\00:13:47.51 If your HDL is high, that's good we're very happy for that, 00:13:47.54\00:13:51.49 but if the LDL or the VLDL, if those are high, 00:13:51.52\00:13:54.99 we're not so happy with that those can be damaging for us. 00:13:55.02\00:13:59.38 And interestingly enough cholesterol and triglycerides 00:13:59.41\00:14:03.82 are not the only problem with substances made in the body 00:14:03.85\00:14:08.70 or that can be made in the body that can cause a problem, 00:14:08.73\00:14:12.15 homocystene and other substances can also cause a problem 00:14:12.18\00:14:17.08 for the heart. 00:14:17.11\00:14:18.92 Now I have asked Dr. Don Miller to also be a guest on our 00:14:18.95\00:14:23.62 program today, and I would like for you to talk with us 00:14:23.65\00:14:27.46 about another aspect of this thing having to do with 00:14:27.49\00:14:30.99 cardiac concerns. 00:14:31.02\00:14:32.53 - Ok I will, but you know as you are showing a picture of that 00:14:32.56\00:14:35.30 cholesterol, I'm thinking as simple as that thing is 00:14:35.33\00:14:41.23 how can anyone believe in evolution. 00:14:41.26\00:14:42.77 - I know. - It is basically so simple 00:14:42.80\00:14:45.76 compared to one eye cone but still people believe in that 00:14:45.79\00:14:50.37 strange thing, God is a good God. 00:14:50.40\00:14:51.85 - Yes and to have one cholesterol molecule which is 00:14:51.88\00:14:56.43 essential for our health. - Absolutely! 00:14:56.97\00:14:58.36 We have to have cholesterol for a number of things 00:14:58.39\00:15:00.78 we have to have it in the skin to make the pro vitamin D 00:15:00.81\00:15:05.31 and we have to have it in all of our hormone organs 00:15:05.34\00:15:11.00 so that they can make our various hormones. 00:15:11.03\00:15:13.57 So it's essential to the functioning of the body 00:15:13.60\00:15:17.06 and yet one wrong enzyme, can make it so that we cannot make 00:15:17.09\00:15:25.25 cholesterol in a proper way. 00:15:25.28\00:15:27.06 So it's impossible, and dozens of them are needed, 00:15:27.09\00:15:32.11 so we would have to have a real explosion of evolution, 00:15:32.14\00:15:36.37 I don't know how I could have ever believed in that theory. 00:15:36.40\00:15:39.43 - Yes it is strange. - It's sociological. 00:15:39.46\00:15:41.47 - It is strange. 00:15:41.51\00:15:42.48 I remember one time we had a... at Uchee Pines we wanted to get 00:15:42.49\00:15:47.20 one of these cholesterol screening machines and so we 00:15:47.23\00:15:51.62 had a couple of different companies with their salesman 00:15:51.65\00:15:54.21 come and I remember very distinctly the day that the man 00:15:54.24\00:15:58.33 came and he put his nice machine down and buffed it up, 00:15:58.36\00:16:01.87 he was real happy with this machine, it was a great machine, 00:16:01.90\00:16:04.27 and a bunch of us lined up and we had little finger sticks 00:16:04.30\00:16:08.38 and got a little drop of blood and he started feeding these 00:16:08.41\00:16:11.36 things into the machine and after about five or six went 00:16:11.39\00:16:14.48 through the machine, he stopped he said just a minute, 00:16:14.51\00:16:16.38 I think there is something wrong, 00:16:16.41\00:16:17.38 I have to re-calibrate my machine. 00:16:17.39\00:16:18.99 So he put his calibration fluids in there and he re-calibrated 00:16:19.03\00:16:22.74 and he said I think it's alright and took some more of our blood 00:16:22.77\00:16:25.48 and he said I'm sorry, maybe it got hurt in shipping 00:16:25.51\00:16:29.29 because it's not working. 00:16:29.32\00:16:30.38 He said well what's wrong, he said all these cholesterols 00:16:30.41\00:16:33.59 are coming out below 150, I don't know the wrong is here. 00:16:33.62\00:16:36.33 - You could have told him what was wrong. 00:16:36.36\00:16:38.92 - You're at Uchee Pines. 00:16:38.95\00:16:40.76 - Where they exercise and have sunlight and have a vegan diet. 00:16:40.79\00:16:45.15 - Absolutely! 00:16:45.18\00:16:46.40 - And trust in divine power, all of those things that make 00:16:46.43\00:16:49.46 for a low blood cholesterol. 00:16:49.49\00:16:50.73 - And you've got to do all of these things, we believe that 00:16:50.76\00:16:53.61 the good cholesterol level is 100 plus your age, 00:16:53.64\00:16:57.04 and if you are 80 years old, it doesn't mean that it's good 00:16:57.07\00:16:59.59 to have 180, really the lower the better. 00:16:59.62\00:17:02.09 Triglycerides we like to see it about what the age is, 00:17:02.12\00:17:05.62 so mine could be just around 60, that's a good triglyceride 00:17:05.65\00:17:10.19 for me, I like to keep mine lower. 00:17:10.24\00:17:12.34 They did a very interesting study up in Finland a number of 00:17:12.37\00:17:15.96 years ago, they took 30,000 men and women from Finland 00:17:15.99\00:17:20.26 who were at risk for coronary heart disease, and they did 00:17:20.29\00:17:24.83 just three simple things for these people: 00:17:24.86\00:17:28.45 One they got them off of tobacco, we realize tobacco 00:17:28.48\00:17:32.50 is poison not only to the heart, but to the entire 00:17:32.53\00:17:35.76 vascular system, got them off of tobacco. 00:17:35.79\00:17:38.22 Second thing, they lowered the blood pressure, taking care 00:17:38.25\00:17:42.51 of salt in the diet, getting them exercising and a few things 00:17:42.54\00:17:45.62 like that, it's quite easy to lower the blood pressure. 00:17:45.65\00:17:48.39 Third thing lowered the cholesterol intake into the body 00:17:48.42\00:17:52.83 which is very easy, you give them more plant based 00:17:52.86\00:17:55.74 carbohydrates and proteins rather than animal ones, 00:17:55.77\00:17:59.32 so that you are not getting so much cholesterol 00:17:59.35\00:18:01.25 into the body. 00:18:01.28\00:18:02.48 What were the results, within a short period of time 00:18:02.51\00:18:05.33 they found that they had a 55% reduction in fatal heart attacks 00:18:05.36\00:18:09.58 in the men and a 70% reduction in fatal heart attacks 00:18:09.61\00:18:13.43 in the women, from three factors, just three factors. 00:18:13.46\00:18:19.07 And there's other factors that affect the heart you know 00:18:19.10\00:18:21.10 some people say well Paul told Timothy take a little wine 00:18:21.13\00:18:24.51 for your stomach's sake, and then someone's people say 00:18:24.54\00:18:27.75 well we take some wine for our hearts sake and we find 00:18:27.78\00:18:30.66 that the number amount of wine that you'd have to take to get 00:18:30.69\00:18:35.00 the beneficial effect for your heart is about 12 glasses 00:18:35.03\00:18:39.79 of wine which then intoxicate you and it's toxic to the 00:18:39.82\00:18:43.57 heart muscle. 00:18:43.60\00:18:44.57 So instead of giving them wine, purple grape juice has the 00:18:44.58\00:18:48.05 resveratrol which has an anti platelet stickiness factor 00:18:48.08\00:18:53.25 which keeps the blood moving freely as along with a 00:18:53.28\00:18:56.18 clove of garlic a day would do the same thing. 00:18:56.21\00:18:58.05 - And the resveratrol has recently been shown to have a 00:18:58.08\00:19:02.37 very beneficial effect on the endothelium, the endothelium 00:19:02.40\00:19:06.20 is the lining of blood vessels and the elasticity and 00:19:06.23\00:19:11.96 plasticity of this membrane is so important to the 00:19:11.99\00:19:16.74 blood vessels to keep them healthy, 00:19:16.77\00:19:18.49 resveratrol is important for that, where would you get 00:19:18.52\00:19:22.73 resveratrol? 00:19:22.76\00:19:24.09 - From grapes. - Purple grapes, and you said 00:19:24.12\00:19:26.45 no wine. - Wine has other toxins, 00:19:26.48\00:19:29.76 - Cardio-toxic and so... 00:19:29.79\00:19:32.41 - Cardio-toxic alcohol is not good for the heart and women 00:19:32.44\00:19:38.65 and people who take mammo-toxic alcohol will have more breast 00:19:38.68\00:19:45.94 problems, breast cancer and other problems. 00:19:45.97\00:19:48.56 So we can get resveratrol from purple grape juice, 00:19:48.59\00:19:51.92 or purple grapes but also from most berries, blueberries 00:19:51.95\00:19:56.55 is one cranberries, strawberries, most berries 00:19:56.58\00:19:59.94 will give some resveratrol, peanuts have resveratrol 00:19:59.97\00:20:04.31 and a number of other foods are found to have significant 00:20:04.34\00:20:08.48 qualities of resveratrol, but these are all 00:20:08.51\00:20:11.27 plant based, notice. 00:20:11.30\00:20:12.73 So a plant based diet can be most important to keeping 00:20:12.76\00:20:18.48 the cardio-vascular system in good health. 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.99 - Absolutely, another one is exercise, they find that those 00:20:21.02\00:20:24.24 who exercise have half the amount of coronary problems 00:20:24.27\00:20:27.47 as those who are sedentary, people who are sedentary 00:20:27.50\00:20:31.47 the health deficit of people who smoke a pack of cigarettes 00:20:31.50\00:20:38.30 a day, and so the need to be out and be active, 00:20:38.33\00:20:42.05 to be exercising every day, not weekend warriors, 00:20:42.08\00:20:45.71 but every day getting good exercise. 00:20:45.74\00:20:47.84 - What would you think of a person who just does not like 00:20:47.87\00:20:50.93 to be outside, they love what goes on inside, they love their 00:20:50.96\00:20:55.04 computer, they love their telephone, they love their 00:20:55.07\00:20:58.90 desks and their reading. 00:20:58.93\00:21:01.94 They have to learn to love their heart monitors too, 00:21:01.97\00:21:04.45 they really need to find a way to break out of that and get out 00:21:04.48\00:21:09.37 and do exercise, now if they don't like outside for some 00:21:09.40\00:21:11.88 other reasons, then get some indoor exercise equipment 00:21:11.91\00:21:14.98 and there are some good ones but still you got to have your 00:21:15.01\00:21:18.05 windows open and get fresh air, exercise is so vital to the 00:21:18.08\00:21:21.47 human body, you really can't live right without it. 00:21:21.50\00:21:23.70 - Many women don't like to get out of door where they live 00:21:23.73\00:21:26.60 because it's not safe in the city where they live, 00:21:26.63\00:21:29.51 and for them of course we can recommend a spa, or we can 00:21:29.54\00:21:33.68 recommend the Y, or to get some indoor exercise equipment 00:21:33.71\00:21:42.47 that can keep them from being sedentary. 00:21:42.50\00:21:44.67 - one of those simple re- bounders just stand there doing 00:21:44.70\00:21:46.70 re-bounding is very good for the entire body, 00:21:46.73\00:21:49.02 that little shake up is good for the bones for osteoporosis, 00:21:49.05\00:21:52.07 it gets your cardiovascular system working, 00:21:52.10\00:21:54.85 gets your respiratory system working, lots of good effects 00:21:54.88\00:21:58.27 from just something as simple as re-bounding, plus you have 00:21:58.30\00:22:00.90 no stress on the knees and the legs and hips. 00:22:00.93\00:22:03.17 - Yes, that's such an important thing. 00:22:03.20\00:22:05.26 - Very important. 00:22:05.29\00:22:06.26 - Yes, well I'm so happy that you brought up these things, 00:22:06.27\00:22:09.96 thank you so much for being on our program today. 00:22:09.99\00:22:11.80 - My pleasure, thank you. 00:22:11.83\00:22:12.80 Now to talk about some of the testing that we now have 00:22:12.81\00:22:17.86 that can help you to know more about your heart and how 00:22:17.89\00:22:21.34 healthy it is, one of those is homocystine, homocystine 00:22:21.37\00:22:26.83 is a rather new kid on the block you might say, 00:22:26.86\00:22:32.24 in laboratory testing, an we note this about it, 00:22:32.27\00:22:36.82 that the lower it is the better. 00:22:36.86\00:22:40.24 Now with cholesterol generally speaking, the lower it is 00:22:40.27\00:22:44.01 the better, now apparently there are some people 00:22:44.04\00:22:47.09 who may need a little higher cholesterol level, these are 00:22:47.12\00:22:51.32 rare but an occasional person does seem to need a bit 00:22:51.35\00:22:55.79 higher level. 00:22:55.82\00:22:56.93 Maybe some of their hormone glands require a bit more 00:22:56.96\00:23:02.33 cholesterol or whatever, but with homocystine 00:23:02.36\00:23:05.16 at least to the present time, the lower it is the better. 00:23:05.19\00:23:09.12 So we recommend that it be below 10 if at all possible, 00:23:09.15\00:23:13.60 certainly below 12, and people who's homocystines are down 00:23:13.63\00:23:17.95 around 5, they are sort of enviable, but there are many 00:23:17.98\00:23:22.57 who do have low homocystine levels. 00:23:22.60\00:23:25.27 Now another one is C- Reactive Protein or CRP, the C-Reactive 00:23:25.30\00:23:32.03 Protein we've had for a long time, but in it's application 00:23:32.06\00:23:36.34 as a cardiac test we have not had it for that long. 00:23:36.37\00:23:40.41 C- Reactive Protein indicates an inflammatory condition 00:23:40.44\00:23:46.10 in the body, when there is an inflammation in the body 00:23:46.13\00:23:51.09 it put a strain on a variety of organs, one of those is 00:23:51.12\00:23:56.20 the heart, it also increases the likelihood that there will 00:23:56.23\00:24:00.26 be small clots, microscopic in size, or large clots, 00:24:00.29\00:24:05.83 large enough that they could block a major blood vessel, 00:24:05.86\00:24:09.44 and the C- Reactive Protein is an indicator for us that 00:24:09.47\00:24:15.25 something is not good for the cardio vascular system. 00:24:15.28\00:24:18.30 Now there are some anti- inflammatory herbs that are 00:24:18.33\00:24:23.00 quite good for the high C- Reactive Proteins for the high 00:24:23.03\00:24:30.25 fibrinogen level which is also a factor that we can check 00:24:30.28\00:24:36.39 to see how good the heart is having it in your body 00:24:36.42\00:24:41.33 and for these an anti- inflammatory herb may be very 00:24:41.36\00:24:46.19 good, there are also some anti- inflammatory foods, apples, 00:24:46.22\00:24:50.70 most fruits, blueberries, kiwi, all of these are very good 00:24:50.73\00:24:57.55 for the heart and are especially high in anti-inflammatory 00:24:57.58\00:25:01.51 substances. 00:25:01.54\00:25:02.81 Hawthorne berry which is double first cousin to an apple, 00:25:02.84\00:25:06.82 Hawthorne berry is an herb which we always think of when we 00:25:06.85\00:25:11.66 think of heart, heart disease, Hawthorne berry, and it's also 00:25:11.69\00:25:16.04 good for the blood pressure, white willow bark, 00:25:16.07\00:25:19.67 one of the best anti- inflammatory herbs that we have, 00:25:19.70\00:25:22.95 it also has some anti-pain characteristics so we can use 00:25:22.98\00:25:27.78 that as well, and white willow bark has yet another wonderful 00:25:27.81\00:25:33.60 feature, and that is it has a very nice anti-coagulant 00:25:33.63\00:25:38.61 factors. 00:25:38.64\00:25:40.04 Interestingly, when we take these herbs, especially if we 00:25:40.07\00:25:46.48 take them in a crude form rather than in a purified derivative, 00:25:46.51\00:25:51.73 if we take these herbs they will usually not overstep 00:25:51.76\00:25:58.40 the boundaries of good health so that we over shoot 00:25:58.43\00:26:02.33 anti-coagulation as a drug anti-coagulant can do. 00:26:02.36\00:26:07.13 Then the common kitchen Turmeric, that's very good 00:26:07.17\00:26:10.90 1/2 teaspoonful one, two, three, four times a day can be most 00:26:10.94\00:26:16.22 beneficial to people for it's anti-inflammatory qualities, 00:26:16.25\00:26:21.57 also has a little anti-coagulant properties as well. 00:26:21.60\00:26:26.11 Rosemary, another common kitchen herb, grow rosemary, 00:26:26.14\00:26:31.53 put it in all your soups and and all your stews, 00:26:31.56\00:26:34.79 put Rosemary in breads, sprinkle it on Pizzas, put it on pasta, 00:26:34.82\00:26:41.98 it's very good in it's use in the kitchen. 00:26:42.01\00:26:46.48 So major on Rosemary and don't forget that it can grow if 00:26:46.51\00:26:51.13 you don't have a garden, right in a flower pot, so put it in 00:26:51.16\00:26:54.91 your living room in a beautiful flower pot, I think it's a very 00:26:54.94\00:26:59.38 nice looking herb, and when you go by just cause the little herb 00:26:59.41\00:27:06.00 to wave in the breeze and see what a nice aroma it puts in 00:27:06.03\00:27:10.10 your entire house. 00:27:10.13\00:27:11.34 Kava Kava another very good herb that has an anti-inflammatory 00:27:11.37\00:27:17.11 quality, one dose, whatever that may be, if it's a tea 00:27:17.14\00:27:22.25 then use one cup four times a day, whatever the done is 00:27:22.28\00:27:26.20 on the package that you purchase take that four times a day. 00:27:26.23\00:27:29.84 And then the last one is ginger, ginger has a very good 00:27:29.87\00:27:34.67 anti-inflammatory quality and can be most helpful in a variety 00:27:34.70\00:27:41.40 of different kinds of heart diseases, 00:27:41.43\00:27:44.10 these are simple things that we have told you 00:27:44.13\00:27:47.48 but if you do these things you will have very good 00:27:47.51\00:27:51.38 cardiac health, Good Bye! 00:27:51.41\00:27:54.99
