Few accomplishments are more 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.96 satisfying to the individual than victory over a bad habit 00:00:04.99\00:00:10.44 such as the habit of overeating, the habit of being overweight. 00:00:10.47\00:00:14.84 We'll be talking about overweight in this session 00:00:14.87\00:00:17.59 and we hope you will join us. 00:00:17.62\00:00:18.80 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health 00:00:38.88\00:00:41.08 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:41.11\00:00:44.25 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:44.28\00:00:47.47 There are many things that a person dreads 00:00:47.50\00:00:54.70 when they are overweight. 00:00:54.73\00:00:56.30 The first thing is they dread is facing the problem, 00:00:56.33\00:01:00.72 they dread thinking about having to loose weight 00:01:00.75\00:01:03.97 or wanting to loose weight. 00:01:04.00\00:01:05.23 Another thing that they dread is the complications 00:01:05.26\00:01:09.45 that may occur from being overweight. 00:01:09.48\00:01:11.85 Several of those skeletal problems, digestive problems, 00:01:11.88\00:01:15.89 diabetes may be a problem, emotional upsets, 00:01:15.92\00:01:21.75 may be a problem for some, so there are many problems 00:01:21.78\00:01:25.47 that can arise from being overweight. 00:01:25.50\00:01:27.61 Now we would like to talk with you about some of these 00:01:27.64\00:01:30.25 and the way that we approach loosing weight 00:01:30.28\00:01:35.31 can be a major problem for one or can be one that one takes 00:01:35.34\00:01:40.91 just in stride, so we would like to talk with you just a little 00:01:40.94\00:01:44.46 bit about how you can go about loosing weight. 00:01:44.49\00:01:48.24 What tips you can have, is there more than prayer, 00:01:48.27\00:01:52.63 is there more than study and commitment of yourself 00:01:52.66\00:01:56.54 to the Lord, can you do something yourself that can be 00:01:56.57\00:02:00.30 helpful, and I have asked Rhonda Clark to join me 00:02:00.33\00:02:03.81 Rhonda is a colleague at Uchee Pines, and I would like 00:02:03.84\00:02:07.25 to welcome you to the program today. 00:02:07.28\00:02:08.80 - Thank you! Glad to be here. 00:02:08.83\00:02:09.96 - And I know that some of the things that you and I will 00:02:09.99\00:02:12.47 talk about that people hear that they will be very pleased 00:02:12.50\00:02:17.03 with, so tell us a little bit about yourself. 00:02:17.06\00:02:20.96 Have you always been thin as you are now? 00:02:20.99\00:02:23.93 - And on my way to being thinner. 00:02:23.96\00:02:26.98 I started my adventure at Uchee Pines quite a bit heavier 00:02:27.01\00:02:31.88 than I am now, and am excited to share with you some tips 00:02:31.91\00:02:35.33 today that have been very beneficial to me personally 00:02:35.36\00:02:37.98 and that I know will help me on my journey to reach my goal 00:02:38.01\00:02:41.29 weight, which I hope will be within the year. 00:02:41.32\00:02:44.90 - That sounds good. 00:02:44.93\00:02:45.96 We know that overweight is a spiritual battle, 00:02:45.99\00:02:53.46 it's a battle that has to do with how I relate to the Lord 00:02:53.49\00:02:58.50 how I understand myself, what commitment I have to the Lord 00:02:58.53\00:03:05.68 for how I handle His equipment. 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.74 All of these things are spiritual things, 00:03:07.77\00:03:10.73 my relationship with other people, this also has to do 00:03:10.76\00:03:14.34 with my weight and my appetite, and the way that I enjoy eating 00:03:14.37\00:03:18.87 or I enjoy having meal times. 00:03:18.91\00:03:21.67 All of these have spiritual overtones, 00:03:21.71\00:03:26.81 but we also know that there are some physical things 00:03:26.84\00:03:30.67 that we can do, while I can commit myself to the Lord 00:03:30.70\00:03:34.90 I can through prayer admit that I am powerless against 00:03:34.93\00:03:39.63 the habit of indulging myself in things that are going to make 00:03:39.66\00:03:43.87 me overweight. 00:03:43.90\00:03:44.87 I can look at myself and I can understand that 00:03:44.88\00:03:48.46 I don't like the way that I am, and I can determine that I 00:03:48.49\00:03:53.38 am not going to eat a certain thing, and then I have found 00:03:53.41\00:03:57.81 that in the past that I do it anyway. 00:03:57.84\00:04:00.04 There are some things that I have found that can be helpful 00:04:00.07\00:04:04.26 that the Lord has recommended that we do, 00:04:04.29\00:04:07.73 and so I know that it is not wrong for us to try 00:04:07.76\00:04:12.95 to participate. 00:04:12.98\00:04:14.15 And sometimes in the way that people look at righteousness 00:04:14.18\00:04:21.46 by faith and being saved by grace and not by works, 00:04:21.49\00:04:26.58 we understand that those things are true and yet the Lord has 00:04:26.61\00:04:30.50 commanded us a number of things to do, one is, 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.77 you see evil and you flee from it, that's works, 00:04:32.80\00:04:39.06 but never the less it helps a lot of times. 00:04:39.09\00:04:42.51 Now there are some other things, I may not flee 00:04:42.54\00:04:47.43 the evil, but I can take the evil out of my house, 00:04:47.46\00:04:51.55 that's another tip. 00:04:51.58\00:04:53.44 What are some things that you have found? 00:04:53.47\00:04:56.01 You know one of the things I know that the Lord had inspired 00:04:56.04\00:04:59.92 that has been very helpful to me in my weight loss program 00:04:59.95\00:05:02.77 has been transitioning over to a two meal a day plan. 00:05:02.80\00:05:06.84 And there is still a part of me even after several months of 00:05:06.87\00:05:09.38 following this, that can't believe I'm only eating 00:05:09.41\00:05:12.19 breakfast and lunch, and not eating supper which 00:05:12.22\00:05:14.55 has habitually been for many people and was for me 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.71 my largest meal. 00:05:17.74\00:05:19.29 - Three square meals a day, I grew up with that, 00:05:19.32\00:05:22.04 that was the sign that you had been successful in life, 00:05:22.07\00:05:27.29 I've always had three square meals a day. 00:05:27.32\00:05:29.56 There is a saying in the area where I grew up, 00:05:29.59\00:05:33.04 so what did you think when you heard about the... 00:05:33.07\00:05:36.60 I remember when I studied about two meals, and that being the 00:05:36.63\00:05:40.71 ideal physiologic pattern for human beings, 00:05:40.74\00:05:45.53 I remember when we studied that in physiology in 00:05:45.56\00:05:49.47 medical school, I thought well that's strange because nobody 00:05:49.50\00:05:54.92 but nobody eats only tow meals a day. 00:05:54.95\00:05:57.82 I didn't realize that there were a lot of people who really did 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.69 eat only two meals a day, that is the two healthful meals. 00:06:00.72\00:06:04.03 Of course I guess that probably 4/5ths of the world only eats 00:06:04.06\00:06:08.13 two meals a day, but the wrong two, they eat a light lunch 00:06:08.16\00:06:11.41 and a huge supper, or what they call dinner, 00:06:11.44\00:06:15.29 but the best meal pattern for a human being, a good breakfast 00:06:15.32\00:06:19.15 and a good lunch. 00:06:19.18\00:06:20.95 What did you think about that when you first heard that plan? 00:06:20.98\00:06:24.57 - You know supper for me had been much more than just a third 00:06:24.61\00:06:28.48 evening meal, for me it began when I came home from work 00:06:28.51\00:06:32.52 and was somewhat of a meal and kind of transitioned into 00:06:32.55\00:06:35.68 snacking in front of the television the rest of the 00:06:35.71\00:06:37.63 evening, even up until bedtime. 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.51 And so giving up my third meal, I was giving up more than 00:06:39.54\00:06:42.56 just a meal, I was giving up my source of relaxation, 00:06:42.59\00:06:45.71 I was giving up my entertainment in the evening, I was giving up 00:06:45.74\00:06:48.50 something a little bigger to me personally. 00:06:48.53\00:06:50.61 And when I first heard of a two meal plan I had a great 00:06:50.64\00:06:52.83 deal of anxiety about this, I knew that I would be suffering 00:06:52.86\00:06:56.37 a great deal of hunger, and that this would be quite 00:06:56.40\00:07:00.26 distressful for me, and so I was geared up to really be 00:07:00.29\00:07:03.88 miserable, but I was determined I was going to give it a try. 00:07:03.91\00:07:08.08 - And the giving up the TV may have been the biggest part 00:07:08.11\00:07:11.76 of the problem. 00:07:11.79\00:07:12.76 Mine might have been more distressing than giving up 00:07:12.77\00:07:15.61 the food, did you find it so? 00:07:15.64\00:07:17.04 - Actually I was so pleasantly surprised to find that this 00:07:17.07\00:07:21.71 was not as painful as I thought it would be. 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.70 - You didn't go around hungry all the time? 00:07:24.73\00:07:27.70 - About the first three days of giving up supper 00:07:27.73\00:07:31.94 I really was missing it, and I felt a sense of 00:07:31.97\00:07:37.44 what should I be doing with myself. 00:07:37.47\00:07:39.85 I had a little bit of disorientation in how to 00:07:39.88\00:07:42.58 spend my time, and that really helped me focus on the fact 00:07:42.61\00:07:45.30 that my stomach was empty. 00:07:45.33\00:07:46.51 - So it only took about three days to become a little bit 00:07:46.54\00:07:49.79 accustomed to it. 00:07:49.82\00:07:50.79 - Surprisingly! 00:07:50.80\00:07:51.82 - Oh Rhonda, it took me much much longer than that 00:07:51.85\00:07:56.05 I remember making a New Year's Resolution, 00:07:56.08\00:07:58.46 I had been cutting down on my suppers for a long time 00:07:58.49\00:08:02.06 but I made a New Year's Resolution, 00:08:02.09\00:08:06.27 I'm not going to eat suppers any more. 00:08:06.30\00:08:07.94 We had gotten to the place where we only had peaches 00:08:07.97\00:08:12.48 in the evening, or some kind of fruit, and then 00:08:12.51\00:08:16.98 New Year's Day came and I said New Year's Resolution! 00:08:17.01\00:08:21.54 I will not eat suppers any more, I know that it's physiologic, 00:08:21.57\00:08:26.58 I know that it's going to be beneficial, 00:08:26.61\00:08:28.04 I know that it will help me to loose a few pounds of weight 00:08:28.07\00:08:30.76 and by that time I was only about 10 or 15 Lbs. overweight. 00:08:30.79\00:08:35.49 Through the years I had lost a little weight, of the fat 00:08:35.53\00:08:41.12 that I had gained extra when I was a teenager 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.87 and so I was not to overweight by that time, 00:08:43.90\00:08:48.22 but I was happy to anticipate those 10 or 15 Lbs. 00:08:48.25\00:08:53.10 But to the thought of giving up my third square meal 00:08:53.13\00:08:58.38 was not very pleasant, so I sailed into it though 00:08:58.41\00:09:03.63 and I determined that I would not eat suppers. 00:09:03.66\00:09:07.02 I prayed that the Lord would help me to control my appetite 00:09:07.05\00:09:10.45 and I was so determined that I would not even look at the 00:09:10.48\00:09:14.64 refrigerator, I would try not to even think about the kitchen 00:09:14.67\00:09:17.15 nor think about food, nor planning menus, 00:09:17.18\00:09:19.73 nor anything of that nature until after I had eaten 00:09:19.76\00:09:24.16 again the next day 00:09:24.19\00:09:25.34 So three months went by it was the first of April, 00:09:25.37\00:09:29.14 and it was along about the first of April when I began 00:09:29.17\00:09:32.79 to be comfortable not eating that third meal. 00:09:32.82\00:09:35.73 - Really! Wow! 00:09:35.76\00:09:37.23 - What do you find now, are you happy with the third meal? 00:09:37.26\00:09:41.04 Do you ever just have a craving for supper? 00:09:41.07\00:09:43.50 - Yes, of course I've had some times it was difficult, 00:09:43.53\00:09:46.80 but I've learned some good tips, and I wanted to share 00:09:46.83\00:09:49.96 those you and with those who are watching today that 00:09:49.99\00:09:52.54 maybe these will be of help to them as well. 00:09:52.57\00:09:54.66 One of the things that I had to get over was the fear 00:09:54.69\00:09:58.49 of being hungry or being distressed about loosing this 00:09:58.52\00:10:01.35 third meal, and it took a lot of really good positive talk 00:10:01.38\00:10:05.09 knowing that I was making this change for good and important 00:10:05.12\00:10:07.55 reasons and really committing myself to making the 00:10:07.58\00:10:10.46 change fully. 00:10:10.49\00:10:11.48 Also I planned to keep myself busy during the evening hours 00:10:11.51\00:10:16.80 I did not follow the same routine that had been so 00:10:16.83\00:10:19.62 connected with overeating and my snacking habits, 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.50 I did completely different things, in fact I even stayed 00:10:22.53\00:10:25.33 out of my house during that time and kept busy, 00:10:25.36\00:10:28.99 I started practicing the piano which I hadn't played for 00:10:29.02\00:10:31.48 many years so that was fun to kind of renew that hobby, 00:10:31.51\00:10:34.08 or I would go for a walk, those are things I recommend 00:10:34.11\00:10:37.02 to fill that time another way. 00:10:37.05\00:10:38.93 Also it's important to make sure the breakfast and lunch 00:10:38.96\00:10:41.97 that you have are very nutritious full of things 00:10:42.00\00:10:45.25 that will give fiber fruits, and vegetables, raw foods are 00:10:45.28\00:10:49.02 important to include in each meal, having whole grains, 00:10:49.05\00:10:52.26 legumes and even a few nuts, but making sure they will hold you. 00:10:52.29\00:10:57.24 Not overeating, that will actually make you hungrier 00:10:57.30\00:11:01.09 in the evening than if you have appropriate portion size 00:11:01.12\00:11:04.40 very nutrition meal. 00:11:04.43\00:11:06.34 Another thing that I found helpful was to have a friend 00:11:06.37\00:11:08.86 do this with me, when I wasn't in this alone and I had a 00:11:08.89\00:11:12.13 partner to go and do things with during supper time 00:11:12.16\00:11:14.40 or someone to pray with me or to encourage me along the way. 00:11:14.43\00:11:19.72 These are some tips that I have found helpful in 00:11:19.75\00:11:23.15 implementing a two meal plan. 00:11:23.18\00:11:24.38 For people who have children Dr. Thrash who have to 00:11:24.41\00:11:30.02 have a third meal for their children, what suggestions 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.67 might you have for someone who's trying to do a two meal plan? 00:11:32.70\00:11:35.75 Well we sometimes think that two meals might be alright 00:11:35.78\00:11:40.42 for adults but certainly children could not survive on 00:11:40.45\00:11:44.11 two meals, but the answer is yes they can in fact it's the 00:11:44.14\00:11:47.84 most healthful plan for children as well. 00:11:47.87\00:11:50.62 This I learned when I was in Physiology classes in 00:11:50.65\00:11:53.72 Medical School, now for the child who is in a home 00:11:53.75\00:12:00.08 where the adults do not take a third meal, the most logical 00:12:00.11\00:12:05.57 is for them also not to take a third meal. 00:12:05.60\00:12:09.07 You will find that your children if you are practicing 00:12:09.10\00:12:13.65 two meals a day, a two meal plan, your children will have 00:12:13.68\00:12:18.13 to be interrupted from what they are doing and brought in 00:12:18.16\00:12:22.89 and told it is now time for you to eat supper, 00:12:22.92\00:12:26.23 or they won't remember it at all, you don't have food 00:12:26.26\00:12:30.07 on the table, you are not cooking in the kitchen, 00:12:30.10\00:12:33.42 you don't have anything that they are accustomed to getting 00:12:33.45\00:12:36.89 at a certain time, you don't have any of those things around 00:12:36.92\00:12:40.73 then they will find that the most logical thing to do what 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.90 you do, you continue your activities until it's time 00:12:43.93\00:12:47.86 for you to prepare for that routine that you go through 00:12:47.89\00:12:51.29 before you go to bed, worship, maybe a story time, 00:12:51.32\00:12:54.88 and then to bed for the children. 00:12:54.91\00:12:57.08 They will consider that the most logical, and rational, 00:12:57.11\00:13:00.45 and normal thing to do, and I have seen it happen many times 00:13:00.48\00:13:04.45 in families where the children are from 1- 3 years of age 00:13:04.48\00:13:11.05 they can easily be trained to a two meal plan. 00:13:11.08\00:13:14.32 If they are older, let's say they are about 10 or 12, 00:13:14.35\00:13:17.49 you may have more difficulty with them, because they remember 00:13:17.52\00:13:22.40 that they are supposed to eat at this time of the day 00:13:22.43\00:13:25.90 that being in the evening, but it's better for them 00:13:25.93\00:13:29.03 if they don't eat the third meal because one the big things 00:13:29.06\00:13:33.60 we are seeing now days is obesity in children and a child 00:13:33.63\00:13:39.77 who goes through puberty being over weight 00:13:39.80\00:13:43.05 it's very likely that they will be overweight 00:13:43.08\00:13:45.54 the rest of their lives, or they will at least be fighting 00:13:45.57\00:13:49.06 the battle of appetite all of their lives. 00:13:49.09\00:13:52.08 So I tell parents who are the parents of small children 00:13:52.11\00:13:56.29 do not allow your child to go through puberty 00:13:56.32\00:14:00.09 being overweight, conquer this habit, the habit of eating 00:14:00.12\00:14:03.89 to much, of eating to frequently, of eating foods 00:14:03.92\00:14:07.07 that are to rich, conquer these habits before they go through 00:14:07.10\00:14:10.79 puberty or they will forever have a hard time. 00:14:10.82\00:14:14.14 Yes, a two meal plan is for children as well. 00:14:14.17\00:14:19.15 - That's so helpful to know. 00:14:19.18\00:14:20.82 - Now tell me, I have found two things for my patients 00:14:20.85\00:14:27.82 that have been really serious problems, 00:14:27.85\00:14:29.90 one is how do you handle the church pot luck, 00:14:29.93\00:14:33.93 and secondly how do you handle the big sit down function 00:14:33.96\00:14:39.59 that occurs in the evening, say someone is getting married, 00:14:39.62\00:14:43.53 and there is a real premium on this marriage, for "You," 00:14:43.56\00:14:47.49 it's a close relative, or in some other way, 00:14:47.52\00:14:52.11 you really are a part of the spotlight, what can you do 00:14:52.14\00:14:57.49 in those two instances? 00:14:57.52\00:14:58.96 The church pot luck or the the family reunion 00:14:58.99\00:15:02.45 or the big sit down evening meal, 00:15:02.48\00:15:07.60 do you have any tips on that? 00:15:07.63\00:15:08.90 - I have a few, one tip that I really like to give for people 00:15:08.93\00:15:12.56 who are going to pot luck is take your own food, 00:15:12.59\00:15:15.85 take your own dishes, you can even take your own lunch 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.74 and you can still enjoy all of the fellowship and social 00:15:18.77\00:15:21.24 activity around you without being tempted by all the lovely 00:15:21.27\00:15:24.29 things that are over on the other table. 00:15:24.32\00:15:25.98 Bring dishes that you know your family can enjoy, 00:15:26.01\00:15:29.61 that you enjoy, sometimes it's helpful to save one of your 00:15:29.64\00:15:33.28 favorite healthful dishes to take to an occasion so that 00:15:33.31\00:15:36.06 you don't feel deprived, you get your special dish 00:15:36.09\00:15:38.61 to take with you. 00:15:38.64\00:15:39.63 Another is to go towards the end of the pot luck line, 00:15:39.66\00:15:43.97 and if you go towards the end you will know many of the 00:15:44.00\00:15:46.75 selections will already be gone, so you will have fewer things 00:15:46.78\00:15:49.63 to choose from. 00:15:49.66\00:15:50.63 Now this puts you at risk of being left with choices 00:15:50.64\00:15:53.67 that may not be as healthful for you and so just keep that 00:15:53.70\00:15:57.33 in mind as you consider... 00:15:57.36\00:15:58.55 Always pray before pot luck and remember that you have 00:15:58.58\00:16:01.59 and angel right beside you who is there to help 00:16:01.62\00:16:03.70 and strengthen you. 00:16:03.73\00:16:04.94 Sometimes I would go at the end of church service, 00:16:04.97\00:16:07.51 and drink two large glasses of cool water, walk around 00:16:07.54\00:16:11.10 a little bit, head back over towards the pot luck, 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.93 towards the end of the line and by then enough time 00:16:13.96\00:16:16.79 would have passed that the water would have helped suppress 00:16:16.82\00:16:19.43 my appetite and I was able to be a little more temperate 00:16:19.46\00:16:22.12 in my choices. 00:16:22.15\00:16:23.35 It becomes more difficult when we get involved in social 00:16:23.38\00:16:27.10 occasions, so much of our society involves evening events 00:16:27.13\00:16:30.23 and evening activities. 00:16:30.26\00:16:31.41 A friend of mine says what she does is tells her friends 00:16:31.44\00:16:34.75 and family, you know I'm sorry I won't be able to eat 00:16:34.78\00:16:37.74 any of that because of my doctors orders, 00:16:37.77\00:16:40.15 and your doctor... - Doctors orders, 00:16:41.37\00:16:42.70 that's a good one. 00:16:42.73\00:16:43.70 - The great physician has ordered me to refrain 00:16:43.71\00:16:47.53 from that third meal. 00:16:47.56\00:16:49.06 Again maybe you can take your own vegetable tray or something 00:16:49.09\00:16:52.64 that if you feel that you have to imbibe can be something 00:16:52.67\00:16:56.27 very simple an very light that would be something easily 00:16:56.30\00:17:00.36 digested, I think though it's best just to be honest with 00:17:00.39\00:17:03.92 people and let them know I won't be able to have any food 00:17:03.95\00:17:07.71 with you that evening, but I would love to sit 00:17:07.74\00:17:09.21 and enjoy your company. 00:17:09.24\00:17:10.44 Those are tough if you are very tempted by the 00:17:10.47\00:17:13.38 things before you. 00:17:13.41\00:17:14.92 - Yes and sometimes something that you can do is drink 00:17:14.95\00:17:18.59 a cup of tea at the time that they are taking the meal 00:17:18.62\00:17:22.51 and you explain this ahead of time, doctors orders 00:17:22.54\00:17:25.93 that I won't be taking the third meal, and then 00:17:25.96\00:17:29.78 they may ask well what can I provide for you, 00:17:29.81\00:17:32.77 will you take some juice or will you take some soup, 00:17:32.81\00:17:35.83 and the answer is of course no I will not need that either. 00:17:35.86\00:17:40.47 And then you can say but if you have some herb tea, I will be 00:17:40.50\00:17:46.49 happy to have something like mint tea or catnip tea, 00:17:46.52\00:17:50.05 that's another good one catnip also quails the appetite a bit 00:17:50.08\00:17:53.82 and that can be very helpful. 00:17:53.85\00:17:56.38 - I would like to mention to our viewers a couple of other teas 00:17:56.41\00:17:59.26 that have been helpful to me personally on occasions when 00:17:59.29\00:18:02.37 I have been feeling hungry and known that I shouldn't eat. 00:18:02.40\00:18:04.71 There are two teas that have been helpful and I make them 00:18:04.74\00:18:08.64 together: One is chickweed, the other is fennel, 00:18:08.67\00:18:12.12 and fennel has a really nice licorice taste, 00:18:12.15\00:18:14.86 those two teas put together have quelled my appetite 00:18:14.89\00:18:18.50 on occasions when I didn't want to eat, and something about that 00:18:18.53\00:18:21.06 warm tea is very soothing, so again helping you 00:18:21.09\00:18:23.62 not feel deprived. 00:18:23.65\00:18:25.51 So I guess that's some of the tips that I have for that 00:18:25.54\00:18:28.71 Dr. Thrash. 00:18:28.74\00:18:29.78 - I have another tip and that is when you are going 00:18:29.81\00:18:33.54 to someone's house and you are going to be there for a 00:18:33.57\00:18:36.29 few days, it is well to let the hostess know ahead of time 00:18:36.32\00:18:40.95 what your dietary restrictions will be, if they lay in some 00:18:40.98\00:18:45.47 beautiful
