Hello! Today we will be talking about diabetes. 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.61 Diabetes is probably most dreaded because of it's 00:00:05.64\00:00:10.16 complications. 00:00:10.19\00:00:11.16 We'll be talking about some of these complications today 00:00:11.18\00:00:14.36 and also how a person gets Type 2 diabetes. 00:00:14.39\00:00:18.23 We hope you will join our program, 00:00:18.26\00:00:19.99 we think you will find it quite interesting. 00:00:20.02\00:00:20.99 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.84 with Dr. Agatha Thrash, of Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:44.87\00:00:48.09 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:48.12\00:00:52.20 There are many lifestyle factors 00:00:52.23\00:00:53.20 having to do with the development of diabetes, 00:00:53.23\00:00:59.68 there are also hereditary factors that have to do 00:00:59.71\00:01:03.34 with diabetes, and sometimes damage done to the pancreas, 00:01:03.37\00:01:08.33 by a longtime of maybe lifestyle changes. 00:01:08.36\00:01:12.92 Now I would like to invite you to come with me 00:01:12.95\00:01:15.58 and I will show you some of the ways that people can 00:01:15.61\00:01:19.88 protect themselves from some of the feared complications 00:01:19.91\00:01:24.70 of diabetes. 00:01:24.73\00:01:25.86 One of the feared complications of diabetes is that of gangrene, 00:01:25.89\00:01:31.53 or leg ulcers, or foot ulcers, or loss of the extremities, 00:01:31.56\00:01:36.67 and we know that in the United States, 00:01:36.70\00:01:39.41 diabetes is one of the prominent reasons why people 00:01:39.44\00:01:44.27 loose the feet or the legs. 00:01:44.30\00:01:46.11 I have asked Arianna Heartsfield to be my little guinea pig 00:01:46.14\00:01:52.79 as I show you the daily, or at least weekly 00:01:52.82\00:01:56.89 examination that the person should do. 00:01:56.92\00:01:59.27 So this is Arianna Heartsfield, and she is one of our students 00:01:59.30\00:02:05.52 in our elementary school at Uchee Pines, 00:02:05.55\00:02:09.05 and she and I will show you the kind of examination 00:02:09.08\00:02:14.32 that must occur frequently for the diabetic. 00:02:14.35\00:02:17.73 So I will take your left foot, if you will remove your sock 00:02:17.76\00:02:21.49 we can show the type of examination that needs to be. 00:02:21.52\00:02:26.73 First thing is to see the bottom of the foot, 00:02:26.76\00:02:30.24 now not many people can get the bottom of the foot 00:02:30.27\00:02:34.30 up so that they can look at it, so here is where a hand mirror 00:02:34.33\00:02:39.49 is very good. 00:02:39.52\00:02:40.65 So, you just either have someone else to look at the foot 00:02:40.68\00:02:44.01 or you take a hand mirror and make it so that you can see 00:02:44.04\00:02:48.15 every portion of the foot. 00:02:48.18\00:02:49.80 You need to see the outside, you need to see 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.31 the back of the heel, and you need to run your finger over it 00:02:52.34\00:02:56.59 if you are not actually looking at it, to make certain 00:02:56.62\00:03:00.04 that there are no places that are getting rough 00:03:00.07\00:03:02.95 or that are getting ulcerated. 00:03:02.98\00:03:04.07 Then each toenail must be examined carefully, 00:03:04.10\00:03:08.06 if a fungus begins to grow in a toenail, 00:03:08.09\00:03:12.16 then that must be treated right away, 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.14 and there are some very simple things that can be used 00:03:14.17\00:03:17.02 to treat a toenail fungus. 00:03:17.05\00:03:20.25 Under each toe one must look for something like 00:03:20.28\00:03:23.84 the development of athletes foot, and between the toes 00:03:23.87\00:03:28.17 one must look to make certain there are no blisters or 00:03:28.20\00:03:32.82 anything of this nature. 00:03:32.85\00:03:34.19 Then very carefully look over the top of the foot, 00:03:34.22\00:03:38.39 one of the reasons for doing this is that most people with 00:03:38.42\00:03:42.54 diabetes eventually get so they can't feel very well 00:03:42.57\00:03:46.14 in the lower extremities. 00:03:46.17\00:03:48.08 Once I removed the toenails because they were hanging off 00:03:48.11\00:03:53.91 a diabetic, just remove those without any anesthesia at all. 00:03:53.94\00:03:58.62 I think the procedure hurt me, the woman who had the problem, 00:03:58.65\00:04:04.64 it didn't hurt her at all, I asked her several times, 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.22 no pain, and she had no pain. 00:04:07.25\00:04:09.77 But it was difficult for me to insert the hemostat and 00:04:09.80\00:04:14.47 uncurl her toenails, without having my flesh to crawl 00:04:14.50\00:04:21.41 thinking oh, this must be hurting badly, 00:04:21.44\00:04:23.98 but she felt no pain at all, felt nothing. 00:04:24.01\00:04:26.60 She said that when she walked she felt as if she were walking 00:04:26.63\00:04:30.92 on cushions or walking on a pillow. 00:04:30.95\00:04:34.41 Now if one should find a callous, 00:04:34.44\00:04:38.23 then this kind of device, which is probably made 00:04:38.26\00:04:43.17 of a little stone, it can be used to simply rub 00:04:43.20\00:04:48.25 that callous off, and so if you are a care taker 00:04:48.28\00:04:52.79 for a person with diabetes, then just rub the callous off. 00:04:52.82\00:04:57.24 Be very careful that you do not draw blood, 00:04:57.27\00:05:00.03 when you draw blood from a diabetic, 00:05:00.06\00:05:02.66 then it must so carefully taken care of. 00:05:02.69\00:05:05.62 The wound must be cleansed then, and a bandage must be 00:05:05.65\00:05:10.08 placed on it, and then every day someone must look at that 00:05:10.11\00:05:14.71 wound to make certain that it's progressing nicely. 00:05:14.74\00:05:20.56 Now you can purchase at a department store, 00:05:20.59\00:05:24.38 a little device, such as this, which can be used 00:05:24.41\00:05:28.79 to electrically remove calluses, 00:05:28.82\00:05:33.45 just the little head of it, usually they come with several 00:05:33.48\00:05:38.11 heads, these can be purchased usually for under $25, 00:05:38.14\00:05:42.20 and these just slip on, and then one turns them on as you 00:05:42.23\00:05:47.47 can see here. 00:05:47.50\00:05:48.47 The little grinding part has been turned on, 00:05:48.49\00:05:53.29 and wherever there is a callous this can be simply used 00:05:53.32\00:05:57.07 to remove the callous, does that tickle? 00:05:57.10\00:05:59.51 - Uh hu! 00:05:59.54\00:06:00.87 - Now this can also be done with the same kind of device 00:06:00.90\00:06:07.35 that I mentioned earlier. 00:06:07.38\00:06:08.91 Then there are these rough fabrics, such as this, 00:06:08.94\00:06:12.64 I found this at a Chinese store selling personal hygiene 00:06:12.67\00:06:19.17 articles, and it has quite a rough surface, 00:06:19.20\00:06:24.19 and this can also be used to scrub the feet, 00:06:24.22\00:06:27.84 if there is excess skin that you need to take off, 00:06:27.87\00:06:32.05 and that can be done after the person has soaked the feet 00:06:32.08\00:06:35.69 in warm water, and notice that I did say warm water, 00:06:35.72\00:06:39.66 that should not be hot water. 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.39 Hot foot baths are not good for the diabetic, 00:06:41.42\00:06:45.26 the reason for that is that the blood vessels 00:06:45.29\00:06:48.84 going to the foot are often constricted because of 00:06:48.87\00:06:52.95 hardening of the arteries, so they cannot deliver more blood 00:06:52.98\00:06:57.45 than they are already delivering. 00:06:57.48\00:06:59.45 If you raise the temperature of the feet, then the metabolism 00:06:59.48\00:07:05.21 of the skin and the deeper tissues will go up, 00:07:05.24\00:07:08.61 making the metabolism rise when the blood supply is not 00:07:08.64\00:07:13.91 adequate to supply the needs of the increased metabolism 00:07:13.94\00:07:18.04 can cause blistering, or even deep death of tissue. 00:07:18.07\00:07:23.65 And a blister on a diabetic caused by some kind of heat 00:07:23.68\00:07:29.10 treatment can set up a situation that can cause the individual 00:07:29.13\00:07:35.51 to loose an extremity. 00:07:35.54\00:07:36.98 So I hope that these very simple things can be helpful 00:07:37.01\00:07:42.28 to you, and Arianna, thank you so much 00:07:42.31\00:07:45.21 for being my guinea pig to show this. 00:07:45.24\00:07:48.55 Thank you so much. 00:07:48.58\00:07:50.02 Now there are a number of things in lifestyle that are 00:07:50.05\00:07:56.95 helpful to know and one of those things has to do with 00:07:56.98\00:08:00.75 such a simple thing, that I'm sure you will say, 00:08:00.78\00:08:05.76 could this possibly help diabetes, but I have asked 00:08:05.79\00:08:09.14 my assistant Rhonda Clark to join me here. 00:08:09.17\00:08:12.85 Rhonda is a member of our staff at Uchee Pines 00:08:12.88\00:08:16.88 and we appreciate your work there, what do you do before you 00:08:16.91\00:08:20.45 came to Uchee Pines. 00:08:20.48\00:08:21.73 - I worked for several years as a registered nurse 00:08:21.76\00:08:23.71 in conventional medicine and different fields. 00:08:23.74\00:08:25.77 - Do you enjoy doing alternative medicine? 00:08:25.80\00:08:28.77 - I do, it's new and I'm still learning, 00:08:28.80\00:08:30.80 really fascinating things, and it's been quite a blessing 00:08:31.70\00:08:34.29 to learn the Lord intended for us to have simple lifestyle 00:08:34.32\00:08:37.41 measures to prevent and to treat illness. 00:08:37.44\00:08:39.42 - What can you tell us about some simple things that can 00:08:39.45\00:08:43.60 help the diabetic. 00:08:43.63\00:08:44.67 - This is so simple you will be amazed. 00:08:44.70\00:08:46.87 I have just recently been reading and interesting book 00:08:46.90\00:08:49.34 called the body's many cries for water, by Dr. Batmanghelidj, 00:08:49.37\00:08:53.65 and in this he tell and interesting important story 00:08:53.68\00:08:57.57 for diabetics. 00:08:57.60\00:08:58.57 One is that insulin's job as it's taking glucose 00:08:58.58\00:09:02.06 into the cell reducing the blood sugar, is also to take 00:09:02.09\00:09:06.58 a little water along with it. 00:09:06.61\00:09:08.77 So in a person who is dehydrated the body will make the cells 00:09:08.80\00:09:13.38 resistant to the action of insulin, is to keep the 00:09:13.41\00:09:17.51 blood volume up to an adequate blood level. 00:09:17.54\00:09:19.56 This is important for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics, 00:09:19.59\00:09:23.29 in a Type 1 diabetic you know that it is important 00:09:23.32\00:09:25.73 to be on as low a dose of insulin as possible 00:09:25.76\00:09:28.62 to control your blood sugar, and on a Type 2 diabetic 00:09:28.65\00:09:32.32 the whole principle that is causing the diabetes 00:09:32.35\00:09:35.31 is the fact that the cells are very resistant to insulin. 00:09:35.34\00:09:39.43 Drinking an adequate supply of water every day 00:09:39.46\00:09:42.90 will help your body invite insulin along with the glucose 00:09:42.93\00:09:47.03 into the cells. 00:09:47.06\00:09:48.24 I think such a simple thing Dr. Thrash, and yet so important 00:09:48.27\00:09:53.92 for individuals who have concerns about weight loss 00:09:53.95\00:09:57.37 have concerns about Type 1 diabetes or Type 2. 00:09:57.40\00:10:00.37 - Now water is a very simple thing, 00:10:00.40\00:10:03.54 but there are some other very simple things too. 00:10:03.57\00:10:06.59 I'm sure that such things as exercise and sleep and rest, 00:10:06.62\00:10:12.80 and perhaps naps, what can you tell us about that? 00:10:12.83\00:10:15.46 - Well I did also want to mention something about sleep. 00:10:15.49\00:10:18.10 There was a study in Japan just a few years ago, 00:10:18.13\00:10:20.98 that showed in individuals who had sleep disturbances 00:10:21.01\00:10:23.85 they had problems metabolizing carbohydrates, 00:10:23.88\00:10:26.90 they had glucose intolerance. 00:10:26.93\00:10:29.13 A professor and physician at the University of Chicago 00:10:29.16\00:10:33.06 doing ongoing research on this, Dr. Eve Van Cauter 00:10:33.09\00:10:36.50 and they are finding that individuals with sleep problems 00:10:36.53\00:10:39.96 do indeed have a higher risk for diabetes. 00:10:39.99\00:10:42.33 Dr. Van Cauter took a group of students from the 00:10:42.36\00:10:45.93 University of Chicago and divided them into two groups 00:10:45.96\00:10:48.29 there was a group that got six hours or fewer of sleep 00:10:48.32\00:10:52.64 every night, and those who had seven to eight hours 00:10:52.67\00:10:56.06 of sleep every night. 00:10:56.09\00:10:57.50 In the ones that were six hours or less, she called them 00:10:57.53\00:11:00.70 short sleepers, the seven to eight hours per night were 00:11:00.73\00:11:04.55 normal sleepers. 00:11:04.58\00:11:06.37 The short sleepers were found to have much greater difficulty 00:11:06.40\00:11:10.46 metabolizing carbohydrate, and the likelihood of being 00:11:10.49\00:11:15.04 more obese, which is a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. 00:11:15.07\00:11:18.58 So getting an adequate amount of sleep every night is a 00:11:18.62\00:11:21.77 very important part of having a normal carbohydrate metabolism. 00:11:21.80\00:11:26.30 - Now tell me, can you sleep to much? 00:11:26.33\00:11:29.37 - Indeed, you don't metabolize carbohydrates better and better 00:11:29.40\00:11:33.22 and better as the hours of sleep increase. 00:11:33.25\00:11:35.21 And it's an interesting fact that we produce serotonin, 00:11:35.24\00:11:40.15 a hormone in our brain that helps us feel calm and happy 00:11:40.18\00:11:43.85 during the hours of wakefulness. 00:11:43.88\00:11:45.53 If we sleep to much, we can become deficient in serotonin, 00:11:45.56\00:11:49.47 serotonin deficiency leads to food cravings, 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.07 and people craving especially carbohydrate foods, 00:11:52.10\00:11:55.57 which are the wrong things you want to be binging on, 00:11:55.60\00:11:58.41 or overeating on, if you are concerned about diabetes, 00:11:58.44\00:12:01.21 so we do have to be careful of the hours of sleep. 00:12:01.24\00:12:05.02 - Now what if somebody follows all that they know in lifestyle 00:12:05.05\00:12:10.35 they get plenty of sleep, they do a lot of things, 00:12:10.39\00:12:13.51 and they still have this thing of insulin resistance. 00:12:13.54\00:12:17.35 Now insulin resistance we know, is that the cell does not have 00:12:17.38\00:12:22.85 mouths or doors or ports in adequate numbers for the insulin 00:12:22.88\00:12:29.87 to get into the port, and the insulin we say is attached 00:12:29.90\00:12:33.95 to glucose to bring it into the cell, so in the person 00:12:33.98\00:12:38.58 with the genetic pre-disposition to get diabetes. 00:12:38.61\00:12:43.36 These individuals do not have adequate numbers of these 00:12:43.39\00:12:47.66 doors or mouths or ports, and so they cannot bring glucose 00:12:47.69\00:12:53.04 out of the blood and into the cell where it's needed, 00:12:53.07\00:12:56.27 so the cells are starving and the blood is having to much. 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.85 So let's say a person is doing everything they know 00:12:59.88\00:13:02.34 in lifestyle and they still have insulin resistance, 00:13:02.37\00:13:05.96 can you suggest something for them? 00:13:05.99\00:13:08.57 - I can, this is a rather interesting and rather new 00:13:08.60\00:13:11.88 concept, something called the glycemic index. 00:13:11.91\00:13:16.15 This is a measure of carbohydrate rich foods that 00:13:16.18\00:13:20.39 ranks them on a scale from 0- 100, based on how quickly 00:13:20.42\00:13:25.10 they raise the blood sugar level in individuals who have 00:13:25.13\00:13:27.85 eaten them. 00:13:27.88\00:13:28.85 When the first listing of glycemic index came out 00:13:28.86\00:13:32.38 there were some quite serious surprises because many foods 00:13:32.41\00:13:36.05 that we know to be very beneficial and healthful, 00:13:36.08\00:13:38.44 such as a potato, were found to be high on this glycemic index. 00:13:38.47\00:13:44.20 Nevertheless individuals with insulin resistance or 00:13:44.23\00:13:48.37 problems with metabolizing carbohydrates were encouraged 00:13:48.40\00:13:51.66 to select primarily foods that had a score of 55 or lower 00:13:51.69\00:13:56.75 or to combine carbohydrates to make the overall meal 00:13:56.78\00:14:01.57 be 55 or lower in glycemic index. 00:14:01.60\00:14:04.47 I mentioned that this is new and it was a group 00:14:04.50\00:14:08.59 of researchers who also questioned why so many 00:14:08.62\00:14:11.47 healthful foods scored so highly on this who did further 00:14:12.79\00:14:15.64 taking into account the amount of fiber in these 00:14:15.67\00:14:18.79 carbohydrate foods. 00:14:18.82\00:14:20.21 They have recently published a list called glycemic load 00:14:20.24\00:14:24.28 they look at serving size of carbohydrate food and 00:14:24.31\00:14:27.84 the amount of fiber calculating that with the glycemic index, 00:14:27.87\00:14:32.05 and it was interesting Dr. Thrash, some of the foods 00:14:32.08\00:14:34.31 we know to be beneficial, like popcorn which scored very high 00:14:34.34\00:14:38.46 on the glycemic index, something along the line of 72. 00:14:38.49\00:14:41.82 When they calculated based on glycemic load was 7. 00:14:41.85\00:14:46.25 - Oh, that's great, I'm happy to know that, because popcorn 00:14:46.28\00:14:49.33 is one of my very favorite grains. 00:14:49.36\00:14:51.42 - And the glycemic load recommendation is 00:14:51.45\00:14:55.02 a glycemic load level of 10 or lower, and many of the foods 00:14:55.05\00:14:59.35 that scored high on glycemic index such as 00:14:59.38\00:15:01.72 rye crisp crackers you may be familiar with, which scored 00:15:01.75\00:15:05.08 something around 60, were again found to be below 10. 00:15:05.11\00:15:08.83 Corn meal, and I love cornmeal porridge as a breakfast food 00:15:08.86\00:15:13.76 that had scored also very high over 60 on the glycemic index, 00:15:13.79\00:15:18.04 but was a very reasonable 11 on the glycemic load. 00:15:18.07\00:15:22.50 If you would like more information about glycemic index 00:15:22.53\00:15:25.74 and glycemic load, there are two web pages that I can 00:15:25.77\00:15:28.74 recommend, that I happened across in my research on this, 00:15:28.77\00:15:31.75 one is easy to remember, it is www. glycemicindex. com, 00:15:31.78\00:15:39.62 the other is the personal web page of a gentleman 00:15:39.65\00:15:43.12 with diabetes who has tried to stay on top of research 00:15:43.15\00:15:45.78 his site is www. mendosa. com, and so I appreciate the 00:15:45.81\00:15:53.46 opportunity to share this. 00:15:53.49\00:15:54.66 - Very good! I'm glad that this new research is focusing on 00:15:54.69\00:15:59.97 this problem, while I know there must be some other answer 00:16:00.00\00:16:05.00 to such good foods as potatoes and popcorn, 00:16:05.03\00:16:09.44 I'm so glad to find that the glucose load is low on that. 00:16:09.47\00:16:14.03 Thank you so much, that's very helpful. 00:16:14.06\00:16:17.06 - Again, for those who are still continuing to have problems 00:16:17.09\00:16:20.32 if they can identify those foods that are scoring lower 00:16:20.35\00:16:23.98 on glycemic load and make their diet more rich in those. 00:16:24.01\00:16:26.99 That is my recommendation. 00:16:27.02\00:16:28.32 - Very good! thank you so much, I appreciate all of this 00:16:28.35\00:16:31.17 good research. 00:16:31.20\00:16:32.17 Now we know that there are certain hereditary things 00:16:32.19\00:16:38.11 that can be a factor in causing the person to get 00:16:38.14\00:16:43.58 insulin resistance or diabetes, and one of those is the 00:16:44.79\00:16:48.37 distribution of the fat in the body. 00:16:48.40\00:16:51.50 You have been aware that there are some people who get 00:16:51.53\00:16:55.36 their fat in the chest, or they may have a large bay window, 00:16:55.39\00:17:00.79 or they may have huge arms and legs, but not be so thick 00:17:00.82\00:17:04.07 in the middle. 00:17:04.10\00:17:06.20 There is something there about the distribution of fat 00:17:06.23\00:17:10.06 that can make the difference, and I have asked Dr. Don Miller 00:17:10.09\00:17:13.66 to discuss this matter Dr. Miller, thank you for 00:17:13.69\00:17:16.53 joining our program, and you have just returned from 00:17:16.56\00:17:21.81 some trips over seas. - Yes! 00:17:21.84\00:17:24.65 - What were you doing there? 00:17:24.68\00:17:25.65 I teach basically health where ever I go, 00:17:25.66\00:17:29.40 but I've been in Eastern Europe a lot, but I go to India, 00:17:29.43\00:17:31.71 and I go to Africa, and I go to the far east, 00:17:31.74\00:17:34.81 so I usually teach health. 00:17:34.84\00:17:36.56 - Sometimes in Germany, and sometimes in Austria, 00:17:36.59\00:17:38.98 and sometimes in Canada. 00:17:39.01\00:17:40.19 - Mostly eastern Europe, when I go to the Europe side, 00:17:40.22\00:17:42.88 I used to go do a lot in Austria, now it's in Russia, 00:17:42.91\00:17:45.73 and Ukraine, and Moldova, and Romania, and Hungary. 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.42 - Do you leave any permanent evidence 00:17:48.45\00:17:51.70 that you have been there? 00:17:51.73\00:17:52.71 Other than just that you have taught students, 00:17:52.74\00:17:55.13 and you hope that they have changed their lifestyles. 00:17:55.16\00:17:57.73 Well, it's not so much that they changed their lifestyle 00:17:57.76\00:18:00.03 as many of them do, but they go on and change other people's 00:18:00.06\00:18:02.69 lifestyles, and so I think the permanency is certainly there 00:18:02.72\00:18:05.87 because it's like a snowball rolling down the hill. 00:18:05.90\00:18:08.81 You teach one, they teach one, and they teach one, 00:18:08.84\00:18:11.26 and pretty soon you've got a large group of people. 00:18:11.29\00:18:13.50 As I go back to these places, like the apostle Paul did, 00:18:13.53\00:18:17.06 and see how things are going It's amazing to see how 00:18:17.09\00:18:19.97 people have really changed their lives. 00:18:20.00\00:18:21.57 - Yes, and that whole community can also change. 00:18:21.60\00:18:25.03 - Absolutely! 00:18:25.06\00:18:26.18 - Well tell us some things about the distribution of fat 00:18:26.21\00:18:28.37 on the body, and what it means in terms of personal health. 00:18:28.40\00:18:31.72 Ok, well you know many people have a problem with 00:18:32.04\00:18:34.15 their distribution of fat in the body, and it's the trunkal 00:18:34.18\00:18:38.35 obesity where we have the most problem with diabetes. 00:18:38.38\00:18:41.64 Those who carry it on the hips, not quite as big a problem. 00:18:41.67\00:18:44.41 But let me say this at the beginning, 00:18:44.44\00:18:46.16 two things first of all, one is fat is not good any place, 00:18:46.19\00:18:51.32 where you have an excess amount of fat on the body. 00:18:51.35\00:18:53.70 Fat we should try to eliminate as much as possible. 00:18:53.73\00:18:56.75 The second thing I should say is, granted, I have not really 00:18:56.78\00:19:00.61 had the problem with to much fat on my body, but we find that we 00:19:00.64\00:19:04.09 get to a certain point in our lives, we all sort of fight 00:19:04.13\00:19:09.20 the battle of the bulge around the middle, and this is where 00:19:09.23\00:19:12.24 the trunkal obesity, the beach ball shape, 00:19:12.27\00:19:15.73 or the orange shape as some people call it, 00:19:15.76\00:19:18.60 leads to more obesity, and there is a reason for this. 00:19:18.63\00:19:21.83 Abdominal fat is different than other fat in the body, 00:19:21.86\00:19:26.33 and here are some of the reasons why: 00:19:26.36\00:19:27.86 1. It has more blood supply 2. It has more cortisol 00:19:27.89\00:19:33.28 receptors. 00:19:33.31\00:19:34.44 Cortisol is a stress hormone, and where you have more cortisol 00:19:34.47\00:19:39.04 receptors, you have more fat being deposited, 00:19:39.07\00:19:42.02 and so if a person is in a high stress situation 00:19:42.05\00:19:45.19 especially a long term or a chronic stress situation 00:19:45.22\00:19:49.05 like a job they hate, a relationship that is crumbling, 00:19:49.08\00:19:53.72 a long term illness, these things cause stress, 00:19:53.75\00:19:57.80 and this constant level of cortisol will be accumulating 00:19:57.83\00:20:01.85 in these cortisol receptors in the abdomen, 00:20:01.88\00:20:05.63 which will be drawing more fat, which makes a person 00:20:05.66\00:20:08.39 get a little bit larger. 00:20:08.42\00:20:10.00 Along with this, the longer the cortisol is higher, 00:20:10.03\00:20:14.34 it will start damaging some of your brain neurons, 00:20:14.37\00:20:17.56 especially those that are neuro-receptors for things like 00:20:17.59\00:20:21.03 dopamine, and serotonin which are your good mood hormones 00:20:21.06\00:20:27.08 in the brain, which causes a person then to become more 00:20:27.11\00:20:29.86 depressed. 00:20:29.89\00:20:30.86 A person more depressed, is a person who is higher stress, 00:20:30.87\00:20:34.37 therefore they've got more cortisol in the abdomen 00:20:34.40\00:20:37.67 more fat again. 00:20:37.70\00:20:38.78 If they are depressed, many people try to fight their 00:20:38.81\00:20:41.52 depression by eating, they will eat a lot of things that are 00:20:41.55\00:20:45.17 wrong for them, like cookies, lots of refined carbohydrates, 00:20:45.20\00:20:48.93 these in themselves will raise the cortisol levels, 00:20:48.96\00:20:52.24 and raise the insulin levels, now you've got two things 00:20:52.27\00:20:55.41 leading towards diabetes: 00:20:55.44\00:20:56.92 1. Trunkal obesity and 2. Raised insulin levels. 00:20:56.95\00:21:01.30 Now the reason why we have a problem with raised insulin 00:21:01.33\00:21:04.04 levels, is that itself will tend to make the cells less receptive 00:21:04.07\00:21:09.53 to insulin when there is to much of a product in the body. 00:21:09.56\00:21:12.86 The body knows how to take care of it's self, it's a good 00:21:12.89\00:21:15.13 manager and some of the receptors will go away on 00:21:15.16\00:21:18.32 the cells surface. 00:21:18.35\00:21:19.32 Sometimes what we do at Uchee Pines, 00:21:19.33\00:21:21.64 when we have a person come there with diabetes 00:21:21.67\00:21:23.66 the first thing that we do if it's Type 2, is put them 00:21:23.69\00:21:26.38 on a fast which will lower the glucose, lower the insulin, 00:21:26.41\00:21:31.47 and then the cell starts poking out some of those receptors, 00:21:31.50\00:21:34.03 and they say oh, we need some more glucose. 00:21:34.06\00:21:37.10 - Now you mentioned that you would fast a person who has 00:21:37.13\00:21:40.10 Type 2 diabetes, what about Type 1 diabetes, 00:21:40.13\00:21:44.14 the what we used to call the juvenile diabetes? 00:21:44.22\00:21:46.73 - Basically for the juvenile diabetic we say the three meals 00:21:46.76\00:21:51.00 a day is the best way to go for them, because they have 00:21:51.03\00:21:54.20 to have the glucose, they have to have the insulin, 00:21:54.23\00:21:56.39 the body's not producing it, you've got to keep that 00:21:56.42\00:21:59.40 available to the body, but for the non-insulin depending 00:21:59.43\00:22:04.15 diabetic, the Type 2, fasting is one of the best things. 00:22:04.18\00:22:09.19 It goes completely against conventional medicine, 00:22:09.22\00:22:12.05 it used to be six, seven meals a day, last meals at 00:22:12.08\00:22:15.28 11:00 at night, we're seeing that as 00:22:15.31\00:22:18.29 just not the case anymore. 00:22:18.32\00:22:20.01 - It's sort of prolongs the problem keeps the person 00:22:20.04\00:22:25.30 with the disease longer. 00:22:25.33\00:22:27.01 I was very glad to see a couple of years ago, 00:22:27.04\00:22:30.44 that there were some people who were now using a short fast, 00:22:30.47\00:22:34.59 a short term fast, one day, two days, or three days, 00:22:34.62\00:22:37.65 for people with diabetes, and those are good times, 00:22:37.68\00:22:41.91 and one or two days of fasting a week will do most people 00:22:41.95\00:22:45.73 a lot of good. 00:22:45.76\00:22:46.90 - For anything they have, even if someone as thin as myself 00:22:46.93\00:22:51.13 a little bit of fasting does not hurt me, I try to stick with 00:22:51.16\00:22:54.01 the two meal a day plan. 00:22:54.04\00:22:55.23 it helps with your eye sight, your hearing, your memory, 00:22:55.26\00:22:59.35 just so many things are protected plus it saves you 00:22:59.38\00:23:02.77 some money and some time, and I can always do some of that. 00:23:02.80\00:23:05.55 - Thank you Dr. Miller. 00:23:05.58\00:23:07.22 - My pleasure! 00:23:07.25\00:23:08.34 - Now the whole subject of diabetes is also associated 00:23:08.37\00:23:15.27 with all of our other endocrine organs. 00:23:15.30\00:23:17.91 The pancreas which has to do with diabetes, 00:23:17.94\00:23:21.88 is certainly not the only one, and I would like to show you 00:23:21.91\00:23:25.07 a chart, that will help you to understand just how it is 00:23:25.10\00:23:28.66 that we recognize this matter of the endocrine system 00:23:28.69\00:23:33.42 and how it functions. 00:23:33.45\00:23:35.05 Now here we have a chart that shows a variety, it shows all, 00:23:35.08\00:23:39.57 or almost all of our glands and organs that have to do with the 00:23:39.60\00:23:45.41 endocrine system. 00:23:45.44\00:23:46.56 Notice here deep in the brain, here is the brain, 00:23:46.59\00:23:50.83 here is the pineal gland right in here, if you go between 00:23:50.86\00:23:57.64 the hind brain or cerebellum, and the brain stem, 00:23:57.67\00:24:01.79 it's on the outside of the brain, but just under it, then 00:24:01.82\00:24:05.49 in the front side of the brain there is the pituitary, 00:24:05.52\00:24:11.38 which is not just one gland, it's actually two glands 00:24:11.41\00:24:15.92 the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe. 00:24:15.95\00:24:19.11 The Pituitary here has a connection with the Hypothalamus 00:24:19.14\00:24:24.50 and the posterior portion and and the anterior portion, 00:24:24.53\00:24:28.05 function differently, and much more could be said about that. 00:24:28.08\00:24:33.00 Here is the thyroid, it is of course located in the neck, 00:24:33.03\00:24:38.55 right here the pineal, the pituitary and the thyroid. 00:24:38.58\00:24:44.25 Now most people are quite aware of the thyroid, but they have 00:24:44.28\00:24:47.64 no knowledge of the Para-thyroids, 00:24:47.67\00:24:50.11 unless they get a disease that involves the Para-thyroids. 00:24:50.14\00:24:55.16 Here they are next to their small button sized glands 00:24:55.19\00:25:02.37 just on the outside of the thyroid, they Thymus gland 00:25:02.40\00:25:06.24 is deep in the chest, as you can see here, in what is called the 00:25:06.27\00:25:10.67 mediastinum, it's just above the heart, 00:25:10.70\00:25:13.71 and the only time that we know that it gets sick 00:25:13.74\00:25:16.85 or that a person usually knows that it is sick 00:25:16.88\00:25:19.77 is if they get myasthenia gravis 00:25:19.80\00:25:22.49 then that might come into question. 00:25:22.52\00:25:24.00 Here are the adrenal glands and you can see that they are 00:25:24.03\00:25:27.49 just next to the kidneys, and the adrenals are as are all of 00:25:27.52\00:25:33.13 these other glands are involved in diabetes. 00:25:33.16\00:25:37.20 Here is the kidney, most people are not aware that the kidney 00:25:37.23\00:25:41.29 is a part of the endocrine gland, but it has very strong 00:25:41.32\00:25:45.21 endocrine potentials. 00:25:45.24\00:25:47.04 Of course the ovary, we know that the ovary... 00:25:47.07\00:25:50.00 Everyone knows the ovary and the testes are endocrine glands, 00:25:50.03\00:25:54.58 but most people do not know that the placenta 00:25:54.61\00:25:57.39 is an endocrine gland, but it's a big producer 00:25:57.42\00:26:02.14 of various hormones. 00:26:02.17\00:26:05.58 The testes, and here is the pancreas, which is primarily 00:26:05.61\00:26:09.59 what we are looking for when we think about diabetes. 00:26:09.62\00:26:13.80 Again the pancreas functions as more than one gland, 00:26:13.83\00:26:18.97 it is responsible not only for keeping the blood sugar 00:26:19.00\00:26:22.52 from going to high, but it is also responsible for keeping 00:26:22.55\00:26:26.39 it from going to low. 00:26:26.42\00:26:28.14 Glucagon keeps the blood sugar from going to low, 00:26:28.17\00:26:31.65 and insulin keeps the blood sugar from going to high. 00:26:31.68\00:26:35.54 Another organ that most people have no conception is an 00:26:35.57\00:26:40.53 endocrine gland, is the stomach. 00:26:40.56\00:26:43.01 The stomach and the whole gall bladder and liver complex 00:26:43.04\00:26:49.36 all of these are associated with the production 00:26:49.39\00:26:53.45 of various hormones. 00:26:53.48\00:26:56.40 The small intestines secretes a substance called secretin 00:26:56.43\00:27:01.17 and also
