that law that guards our health 00:01:02.26\00:01:10.44 that helps us to be strong, it gives us efficiency 00:01:10.47\00:01:14.03 it makes the body function in the way that it does. 00:01:14.06\00:01:16.99 Physiologic law is probably the most fascinating study 00:01:17.02\00:01:22.95 I have ever made in my entire life. 00:01:22.98\00:01:26.15 I love the study of health it's a very compelling study 00:01:26.19\00:01:32.44 it's a study that when people make it, 00:01:32.47\00:01:35.58 they understand the great joy that those of us who spend 00:01:35.61\00:01:40.23 a lifetime in this kind of work, this is the kind of thing 00:01:40.26\00:01:45.06 that we can thoroughly put ourselves into. 00:01:45.09\00:01:48.45 In a study of law, the physiologic law also helps us 00:01:48.48\00:01:53.03 to be of service to others. 00:01:53.06\00:01:54.67 As we learn about law, we can make it so that we 00:01:54.70\00:01:59.34 teach others how to be obedient to law, 00:01:59.37\00:02:02.34 we can find ways that will make it easy for them to be 00:02:02.37\00:02:07.53 obedient to law, such as finding recipes 00:02:07.56\00:02:11.25 that will make it so that they can cook healthfully 00:02:11.28\00:02:13.42 and finding activities that they can do out of doors that 00:02:13.45\00:02:17.32 will make them enjoy being out of doors more, 00:02:17.35\00:02:20.33 and a variety of other things that can just transform life 00:02:20.36\00:02:25.57 and make it so that everyone enjoys physiologic law. 00:02:25.60\00:02:29.47 Now my colleague at Uchee Pines Rhonda Clark is going to help me 00:02:29.50\00:02:35.68 talk with you today about this thing of law. 00:02:35.71\00:02:38.32 Health laws, do you have an opportunity at Uchee Pines 00:02:38.35\00:02:42.41 to practice the health laws? 00:02:42.44\00:02:43.69 - I have learned a great deal about health laws at Uchee Pines 00:02:43.72\00:02:47.49 and am very lucky to have opportunity there to put those 00:02:47.52\00:02:51.04 into practice, and to see people who have worked with 00:02:51.07\00:02:53.76 health laws for more years than I have, being role models 00:02:53.79\00:02:58.18 and encouraging to me while I'm learning them. 00:02:58.21\00:03:01.61 - You've been in the medical field for a long time, 00:03:01.64\00:03:04.41 about fifteen, twenty years. 00:03:04.44\00:03:07.46 And with that you have learned quite a lot of standard medicine 00:03:07.49\00:03:12.40 and now you might say that what you are doing 00:03:12.43\00:03:15.03 is lifestyle medicine, so tell us something about 00:03:15.06\00:03:19.18 what you have learned about laws of health. 00:03:19.21\00:03:22.58 - There have been some surprises along the way, 00:03:22.61\00:03:25.22 I thought as a registered nurse in my training 00:03:25.25\00:03:27.78 and my experience, I knew about nutrition 00:03:27.81\00:03:30.60 and I have learned there is much more to nutrition. 00:03:30.63\00:03:34.14 Simple things, laws of nutrition that I was not familiar with 00:03:34.17\00:03:37.95 even simple things as fresh air, sunlight, the importance 00:03:37.98\00:03:43.14 of regularly being involved in those, are important for 00:03:43.17\00:03:46.70 health, these were new concepts for me, and I have enjoyed 00:03:46.73\00:03:49.37 learning about them. 00:03:49.40\00:03:50.76 - And the laws of regularity, the laws of cleanliness, 00:03:50.79\00:03:56.48 all those kinds of things, also have powerful influence 00:03:56.51\00:04:00.70 on the health that we have. 00:04:00.73\00:04:02.49 What else would you like to share with us? 00:04:02.52\00:04:05.88 - Well I wanted to share a little information today on 00:04:05.91\00:04:09.71 a couple particular laws of health. 00:04:09.74\00:04:13.20 The first one being the law of regular exposure to sunlight. 00:04:13.23\00:04:18.22 Sunlight has many healing properties, we think of it as 00:04:18.25\00:04:22.56 something that enhances our mood, we love to see 00:04:22.59\00:04:25.50 the spring time come, and summer, with the increased 00:04:25.53\00:04:28.96 sunlight and warmth. 00:04:28.99\00:04:30.51 We know that it helps our body produce vitamin D, 00:04:30.54\00:04:33.55 an essential nutrient, and we may know that sunlight has 00:04:33.58\00:04:38.94 properties, I was surprised to learn of two particular 00:04:38.97\00:04:43.63 properties of sunlight that benefit our health. 00:04:43.66\00:04:46.55 One has to do with the production of vitamin D, 00:04:46.58\00:04:49.85 when sunlight strikes our skin in it's production of vitamin D 00:04:49.88\00:04:56.02 it uses Cholesterol, as that Cholesterol is utilized 00:04:56.05\00:05:01.66 then Cholesterol needs to be taken from the blood 00:05:01.69\00:05:05.21 to replace that which has been used in the production of 00:05:05.24\00:05:07.67 vitamin D, lowering our blood cholesterol levels. 00:05:07.70\00:05:11.64 An interesting study looking at cholesterol levels prior to 00:05:11.67\00:05:17.65 and after a two hour sunbath showed that cholesterol levels 00:05:17.68\00:05:22.85 in that short period of time were lowered on average 13%. 00:05:22.88\00:05:27.46 It's further believed that as the blood cholesterol level 00:05:27.50\00:05:32.07 lowers, eventually the atherosclerotic plaques 00:05:32.10\00:05:35.90 that have accumulated in our arteries, 00:05:35.93\00:05:37.96 may be able to be reduced through regular sunning 00:05:37.99\00:05:41.30 and regular utilization of Cholesterol in the production of 00:05:41.33\00:05:44.74 vitamin D, I found that to be quite interesting. 00:05:44.77\00:05:47.46 Also with sunlight, it has a bactericidal activity 00:05:47.49\00:05:54.01 when exposed to our skin it actually helps turn the 00:05:54.04\00:05:57.10 oils of our skin into a substance that kills microbes 00:05:57.13\00:06:01.34 of all types. 00:06:01.37\00:06:02.34 When we hang our laundry out on the line, 00:06:02.35\00:06:05.94 our laundry has the benefit of the sunlight in killing 00:06:05.97\00:06:09.76 any bacteria that might be present. 00:06:09.79\00:06:11.53 Some of you may have seen an article in a women's magazine 00:06:11.56\00:06:15.99 I guess about two years ago how washing machines were 00:06:16.02\00:06:19.16 found to have high colonization's 00:06:19.19\00:06:21.37 of the bacteria E Coli 00:06:21.41\00:06:23.49 and this makes sense since we launder our under garments 00:06:23.53\00:06:26.52 in the washing machine. 00:06:26.55\00:06:27.64 Hanging the clothes then out on the line ensure 00:06:27.67\00:06:31.06 that the bacteria are completely eliminated 00:06:31.09\00:06:33.57 after the Tsunami which was around Christmas time 00:06:33.60\00:06:37.76 the end of 2004, devastation, and for many people 00:06:37.79\00:06:42.35 the inability to find pure water. 00:06:42.38\00:06:44.20 It was interesting that one technique 00:06:44.23\00:06:47.58 for purifying water was to place 00:06:47.61\00:06:49.33 water in glass jars, and expose them to sunlight 00:06:49.36\00:06:53.04 for several hours, this property was enhanced if they were 00:06:53.07\00:06:56.48 set on corrugated tin. 00:06:56.51\00:06:58.86 The sunlight would kill the pathogens in the water 00:06:58.89\00:07:03.23 so that it was then safe to drink. 00:07:03.26\00:07:05.46 Sunlight also has a property to stimulate our immune system 00:07:05.49\00:07:11.72 so that even internally we have a better opportunity 00:07:11.75\00:07:15.81 to fight off infections and illness. 00:07:15.84\00:07:18.47 It increases the number of white blood cells 00:07:18.50\00:07:20.89 and increases their activity level, so that infections 00:07:20.92\00:07:24.27 viruses, bacteria, these things can be prevented or headed off. 00:07:24.30\00:07:28.07 So I found that to be quite interesting about sunlight. 00:07:28.10\00:07:31.72 Today I wanted to share also with you another property of 00:07:31.75\00:07:36.39 health Dr. Thrash that I was so interested to learn about it, 00:07:36.42\00:07:40.36 and that is the beneficial properties of fresh air, 00:07:40.39\00:07:44.21 especially fresh country air. 00:07:44.24\00:07:47.05 Our air, which I didn't realize has negatively and positively 00:07:47.08\00:07:52.60 charged ions, and they have an effect on us. 00:07:52.63\00:07:56.07 In the presence of positively charged ions, which we find 00:07:56.10\00:08:00.76 indoors, especially around electrical equipment, 00:08:00.79\00:08:04.25 such as televisions, computer monitors, or around 00:08:04.28\00:08:08.27 air conditioning units, home heating units, 00:08:08.30\00:08:11.72 these positively charged air ions lead to head ache, 00:08:11.75\00:08:16.20 irritability, nasal congestion, feelings of fatigue, 00:08:16.23\00:08:21.29 even depression, where as outdoors in the fresh air 00:08:21.32\00:08:25.54 especially as we get into fresh country air, 00:08:25.57\00:08:27.82 we find higher percentages of negative air ions. 00:08:27.85\00:08:31.95 These have the exact opposite effect, they are calming 00:08:31.98\00:08:35.83 and yet at the same time help us feel energized, 00:08:35.86\00:08:38.52 they relieve nasal congestion and allergy symptoms. 00:08:38.55\00:08:41.60 They relieve headache and fatigue, and interestingly 00:08:41.63\00:08:46.27 they have quite a fascinating effect on our bodies 00:08:46.30\00:08:50.71 physiologically. 00:08:50.74\00:08:52.11 Along our trachea and bronchi the main tree of our respiratory 00:08:52.14\00:08:58.45 system we find cells that are lined with little tiny hairs 00:08:58.48\00:09:03.08 called cilia, their job is to help sweep debris that we inhale 00:09:03.11\00:09:08.83 out of the respiratory tract and it's partner in doing this 00:09:08.86\00:09:12.88 is mucous. 00:09:12.91\00:09:14.57 The mucous traps things that we have breathed in, 00:09:14.60\00:09:17.35 little dust particles, pollen, and the cilia work together 00:09:17.38\00:09:20.99 as little brooms to sweep this substance back out, 00:09:21.02\00:09:24.45 so we can cough it out or swallow it, and eliminate it 00:09:24.48\00:09:27.48 from the respiratory tract. 00:09:27.51\00:09:28.81 Normally our cilia beat about nine hundred times per minute 00:09:28.84\00:09:33.61 in the presence of higher percentages of positive air ions 00:09:33.64\00:09:38.44 they only beat six hundred times per minute. 00:09:38.47\00:09:41.49 Meaning that these substances that we inhaled, are more slowly 00:09:41.52\00:09:45.80 eliminated, giving greater exposure to the delicate 00:09:45.83\00:09:48.73 respiratory system. 00:09:48.76\00:09:49.89 Where as in the presence of negative air ions, 00:09:49.93\00:09:52.92 the cilia would beat about twelve hundred times per minute 00:09:52.95\00:09:56.03 and mucous flow would increase just a bit, 00:09:56.06\00:09:58.79 helping keep that respiratory tract clear. 00:09:58.82\00:10:02.12 This may be why negative air ions are beneficial 00:10:02.15\00:10:05.14 to fighting allergy symptoms. 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.03 In Philadelphia, at Northeastern Hospital 00:10:07.06\00:10:11.16 one very interesting use of negative air ions, 00:10:11.19\00:10:14.51 is in treating burn patients, as they receive a burn patient 00:10:14.54\00:10:18.85 at Northeastern, they are treated three times a day 00:10:18.88\00:10:22.35 thirty minutes per session, in a room that has 00:10:22.38\00:10:25.57 lot's of input of negative air ions, from machines 00:10:25.60\00:10:30.40 they are ionizing machines. 00:10:30.43\00:10:32.25 They did a study in the relief of pain, for burn patients 00:10:32.28\00:10:36.90 in this room and found that when treated consistently 00:10:36.93\00:10:40.18 three times a day, thirty minutes per episode, 00:10:40.33\00:10:42.48 narcotic need decreased by an amazing 85%. 00:10:42.51\00:10:47.84 They regularly continued to use negative air ion treatments 00:10:47.87\00:10:51.89 on their burn patients, seeing this their chief of surgery 00:10:51.92\00:10:55.71 decided they needed to try using negative air ions 00:10:55.74\00:10:58.65 in patients following surgery. 00:10:58.68\00:11:00.84 They followed for eight months patients having surgery 00:11:00.87\00:11:05.93 137 patients agreed to be a part of this study, 00:11:05.96\00:11:08.63 they only received two treatments in the negative 00:11:08.66\00:11:12.51 air ion rooms, they would go for thirty minutes on their 00:11:12.54\00:11:15.62 first day, post surgery, then again on their second day 00:11:15.65\00:11:19.10 post surgery. 00:11:19.13\00:11:20.28 Seventy nine of the 137 patients needed hardly any 00:11:20.31\00:11:25.03 narcotics, some needed none, and in the others, in fact 00:11:25.06\00:11:29.04 over all they had about a 50% decrease in narcotic use. 00:11:29.07\00:11:33.26 so it is fascinating that God has put in fresh air, 00:11:33.29\00:11:36.95 something so amazing and helpful to us. 00:11:36.98\00:11:39.57 If you were to stand in downtown Los Angeles, 00:11:39.60\00:11:43.29 for example, or any busy city, you would find in the air, 00:11:43.32\00:11:46.98 less than a hundred little negative charged ions 00:11:47.01\00:11:51.96 per cubic centimeter, in fresh country air you would 00:11:51.99\00:11:55.26 from 20 to 50 thousand, but the best place to find high 00:11:55.29\00:12:01.41 concentrations of negative air ions is around falling water. 00:12:01.44\00:12:05.16 At Yosemite Falls, for example, they measured over 100,000 00:12:05.19\00:12:09.08 negative air ions per cubic centimeter of air. 00:12:09.11\00:12:12.07 At the ocean, near moving water, even in our shower, 00:12:12.10\00:12:16.24 we find negative air ions, trees, are wonderful sources, 00:12:16.27\00:12:20.65 especially evergreen trees. 00:12:20.68\00:12:22.28 Keeping plants in the home can help increase the number 00:12:22.31\00:12:25.77 of negative air ions. 00:12:25.80\00:12:27.24 So I encourage you to spend time out doors in the fresh air, 00:12:27.27\00:12:30.88 and sun shine, and let those wonderful laws of health 00:12:30.91\00:12:34.98 those wonderful gifts of God benefit you. 00:12:35.18\00:12:37.74 - Very good, you know as I was listening to your talking 00:12:37.77\00:12:41.78 about this I thought what powerful effects this has 00:12:41.81\00:12:47.28 an anti-aging influence, sunshine and good fresh air, 00:12:47.31\00:12:51.79 and so when we think about aging, and everybody would 00:12:51.82\00:12:57.03 like to have anti-aging factors in their lives, 00:12:57.06\00:13:00.71 here are some, in fact all the laws of health 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.72 are things that we can do that can help us resist 00:13:03.75\00:13:07.83 the inevitable and that is the aging, we can slow down 00:13:07.86\00:13:12.45 that aging process. 00:13:12.48\00:13:14.37 We do that also by not smoking, by not drinking alcoholic drinks 00:13:14.40\00:13:18.76 by eating a proper diet, 00:13:18.79\00:13:20.41 there are so many things that we can do 00:13:20.45\00:13:22.70 and Dr. Donald Miller has found quite a lot of laws 00:13:22.74\00:13:27.74 of health as he has studied physiology and studied 00:13:27.77\00:13:30.97 Inspired Writings, and Dr. Miller thank you 00:13:31.00\00:13:33.56 for joining us today, and I would like you to tell us 00:13:33.59\00:13:36.66 about some of the things you have found on the 00:13:36.69\00:13:39.17 Laws of Health. 00:13:39.20\00:13:40.17 - Ok! Normally when we talk about laws of health 00:13:40.18\00:13:43.40 we somehow limit them to eight laws of health 00:13:43.43\00:13:45.97 and they are good laws of health, nutrition, exercise, 00:13:46.00\00:13:48.60 water, sunshine, temperance, air, rest, and 00:13:48.63\00:13:51.65 trusting in the Lord. 00:13:51.68\00:13:52.76 I can't say anything against these, these are vital laws 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.60 of health, but if we stop at these eight laws, 00:13:55.63\00:13:58.75 we miss some very important laws, but I always whenever 00:13:58.78\00:14:02.59 I teach lifestyle principles at Uchee Pines, or anywhere 00:14:02.62\00:14:05.46 in the world I start off with the two foundational principles, 00:14:05.49\00:14:09.93 If any of my students are out there, 00:14:09.96\00:14:11.72 I want you to repeat them with me because it will mean 00:14:11.75\00:14:14.35 that you listened to me in class. 00:14:14.38\00:14:15.55 1. The life is in the blood, what you eat becomes your blood 00:14:15.58\00:14:21.17 whatever you had for your last meal, within a few hours 00:14:21.20\00:14:24.63 was already circulating through your blood system. 00:14:24.66\00:14:27.38 If you had good food, it follows that you probably 00:14:27.41\00:14:31.44 had good blood, if you had junk food, 00:14:31.47\00:14:33.63 well I'll leave you to make a conclusion what type of blood 00:14:33.66\00:14:36.55 that you had, if you've had lots of sugar and fat, 00:14:36.58\00:14:39.24 you've got lots of sugar and lots of fat into your 00:14:39.27\00:14:41.98 blood stream. 00:14:42.01\00:14:42.98 Now you say, well sugar is a good thing, 00:14:42.99\00:14:44.36 yes sugar if it's in its unrefined state releases 00:14:44.39\00:14:48.91 slowly into the blood stream, therefore helping you with 00:14:48.94\00:14:51.69 your blood sugar situation, so the life is in the blood. 00:14:51.72\00:14:56.10 Second law, foundational law perfect health requires 00:14:56.14\00:14:59.49 perfect circulation, you can have the best blood in the world 00:14:59.52\00:15:02.80 but if you are not getting blood to an area, 00:15:02.83\00:15:05.19 you've got death on the way. 00:15:05.22\00:15:06.93 So what we need to do is to make sure we have 00:15:06.96\00:15:08.78 good circulation, now with those eight laws of health, 00:15:08.81\00:15:11.56 some of those help that circulation and that good blood 00:15:11.59\00:15:14.58 nutrition is certainly part of the good blood situation. 00:15:14.61\00:15:18.12 Exercise, certainly part of the circulation part, water, 00:15:18.15\00:15:22.52 part of the circulation part, sunshine relaxes the blood 00:15:22.55\00:15:26.11 vessels, allows blood to flow freer, that's part of the 00:15:26.14\00:15:31.12 perfect circulation, so we got lot's of other things 00:15:31.15\00:15:34.33 that we can do. 00:15:34.36\00:15:35.33 But now some other laws that I have found, 00:15:35.34\00:15:37.57 in searching through the literature and other things 00:15:37.60\00:15:40.03 that are extremely important to us, one is something 00:15:40.06\00:15:43.08 as simple as cheerfulness, the attitude that you have. 00:15:43.11\00:15:46.52 There was a study that came out of Kansas State University, 00:15:46.55\00:15:49.67 saying that people who are extroverts or who just 00:15:49.70\00:15:53.17 seem to be happy, stay happy longer and are less sick. 00:15:53.20\00:15:57.58 My mother is one of these people, I have never seen anyone 00:15:57.61\00:16:00.55 more positive than my mother is, she is always happy 00:16:00.58\00:16:04.34 she is never sick, I see other people who follow 00:16:04.37\00:16:08.90 maybe a better lifestyle than my mother, I don't know 00:16:08.93\00:16:11.37 but they are always gloomy people, 00:16:11.41\00:16:13.24 they seem to get sick more, and so what we need to do is 00:16:13.27\00:16:16.52 practice an attitude of gratitude and have happiness 00:16:16.55\00:16:20.31 as part of our lifestyles, 00:16:20.34\00:16:21.86 looking for things to be happy about. 00:16:21.89\00:16:23.78 I find that people who are depressed, seem to focus 00:16:23.82\00:16:26.98 on things that are depressing. 00:16:27.01\00:16:28.90 They've got a problem in their life, they spend their 00:16:28.93\00:16:31.51 whole life looking at the problem, 00:16:31.54\00:16:33.41 rather than looking at the maybe solution, 00:16:33.44\00:16:35.87 or looking beyond the problem to something else. 00:16:35.90\00:16:38.45 I meet people all around the world that are having problems 00:16:38.48\00:16:41.88 with their emotions, with their happiness, 00:16:41.91\00:16:46.16 with they are just gloomy people, and I say well what's 00:16:46.19\00:16:49.32 the problem, they can tell me ten things in a row, 00:16:49.35\00:16:51.99 and I'll say well tell me something that is right 00:16:52.02\00:16:54.38 and if I can somehow get them to focus on something 00:16:54.41\00:16:56.95 that's more positive. 00:16:56.98\00:16:58.78 It's strange that their body tends to follow, 00:16:58.81\00:17:01.95 so we need to have a positive outlook on life, 00:17:01.98\00:17:05.50 practice cheerfulness, another one of the laws of health is 00:17:05.53\00:17:09.04 our dress, you see it's very popular in the winter time 00:17:09.07\00:17:13.23 people wearing these big down vests, 00:17:13.26\00:17:15.12 they've got maybe a flannel shirt on, 00:17:15.15\00:17:17.30 but they have a four inch thick down vest on with a 00:17:17.33\00:17:20.42 flannel shirt underneath too, which means that 00:17:20.45\00:17:22.98 their trunk is warmer than their extremities 00:17:23.01\00:17:26.39 which means the blood will shunt to the trunk, 00:17:26.42\00:17:28.85 congesting the trunk, which in itself is not a 00:17:28.88\00:17:32.00 healthful condition. 00:17:32.03\00:17:33.49 We need to have equal circulation you see that's 00:17:33.53\00:17:36.03 going to cut down on the perfect circulation. 00:17:36.06\00:17:38.55 If we have the same number of layers on our arms 00:17:38.58\00:17:42.00 as we have on our trunk, we're going to have better 00:17:42.03\00:17:44.71 circulation, so we need to have good circulation. 00:17:44.74\00:17:47.37 If we have tight bands on our bodies, 00:17:47.40\00:17:49.91 some people put these belts on and wear those constricting 00:17:49.94\00:17:52.64 bands, that's cutting down on good circulation. 00:17:52.67\00:17:55.33 We need to have clothes that are healthful, 00:17:55.36\00:17:57.76 we need to cover our bodies, summer and winter. 00:17:57.79\00:18:00.90 It's amazing, I go down to Africa and in the summer time 00:18:00.93\00:18:05.12 when the sun is beating down, the workers are out 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.68 in the fields with the long sleeves on, and with something 00:18:07.71\00:18:10.53 on their heads. 00:18:10.56\00:18:11.54 You protect yourself from the rays of the sun, 00:18:11.57\00:18:15.02 now the sun is good, but certain times of the day 00:18:15.05\00:18:16.76 it's not the best, but also you can become chilled without 00:18:16.79\00:18:19.50 even knowing it on the hottest days, because 00:18:19.53\00:18:21.88 the evaporation of the water we've got that latent heat of 00:18:21.91\00:18:24.91 evaporation, taking off lots of heat, lowers the temperature 00:18:24.94\00:18:29.33 of the extremities, trunk is heating up, 00:18:29.36\00:18:31.54 congestion in the trunk, so we need to have right clothing. 00:18:31.57\00:18:35.90 Another one of the laws of health that we normally don't 00:18:35.94\00:18:38.68 think about is, let me see I've got some written down here. 00:18:38.71\00:18:42.98
