Hello! Mammals are animals that have a number 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.36 of specific characteristics, one of which is 00:00:05.39\00:00:09.14 that they suckle their young. 00:00:09.17\00:00:11.09 They produce milk, and the mammary glands 00:00:11.13\00:00:14.89 being rather complicated and subject to a number 00:00:14.92\00:00:18.03 of influences, can have certain diseases to happen 00:00:18.06\00:00:22.24 to them, both men's as well as women's breasts 00:00:22.27\00:00:25.52 so we would like to talk about some of these 00:00:25.55\00:00:27.74 in this program. 00:00:27.77\00:00:29.04 We believe that you will learn some things 00:00:29.07\00:00:31.11 that may be of assistance to you, so join us in this program. 00:00:31.14\00:00:34.74 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health, 00:00:54.78\00:00:56.97 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:57.00\00:01:00.48 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:01:00.51\00:01:03.60 Now mammary glands are the only gland that I know 00:01:03.63\00:01:11.93 that is not fully developed at the time of birth. 00:01:11.96\00:01:15.58 But the mammary glands do not fully develop until the time 00:01:15.61\00:01:20.16 of puberty, and then women's breasts because of various 00:01:20.19\00:01:25.00 specific hormonal changes and because of certain germ 00:01:25.03\00:01:30.49 cells that lie in the area of the breasts 00:01:30.52\00:01:34.50 are susceptible to the influences from outside 00:01:34.53\00:01:39.71 of the cell itself, these germinal cells, 00:01:39.74\00:01:43.26 and can therefore develop into the female breast. 00:01:43.29\00:01:47.91 Now I would like to talk with you some about 00:01:47.94\00:01:50.45 these various aspects of breast disease, 00:01:50.48\00:01:54.10 and breast health, and some lifestyle patterns, 00:01:54.13\00:01:58.57 that can make for healthy breasts, because healthy breasts 00:01:58.60\00:02:02.79 are resistant to a number of different kinds of diseases. 00:02:02.82\00:02:05.67 To help me to explain these matters to you more fully 00:02:05.70\00:02:11.59 I have invited my colleague from Uchee Pines 00:02:11.62\00:02:14.94 Rhonda Clark, who is a registered nurse, 00:02:14.97\00:02:18.15 and at this time is one of the counselors at Uchee Pines. 00:02:18.18\00:02:22.50 Have you enjoyed your work as a telephone counselor mainly? 00:02:22.53\00:02:28.69 - Yes! A great deal, and I'm always surprised by the new 00:02:28.73\00:02:32.90 diseases that I get calls about, that I have the opportunity 00:02:32.94\00:02:36.45 to research, and really appreciate the opportunity 00:02:36.48\00:02:39.25 to help people. 00:02:39.28\00:02:40.25 - It's amazing how many different kinds of disorders 00:02:40.26\00:02:44.27 people inquire about by telephone, 00:02:44.30\00:02:47.02 it gives one quite and opportunity. 00:02:47.05\00:02:49.37 Now one of the diseases that you have had some experience 00:02:49.40\00:02:53.76 with is that of fibrocystic breast disease, 00:02:53.79\00:02:56.39 and other breast disorders, would you like to talk a bit 00:02:56.42\00:03:00.03 about fibrocystic breast disease, and what we can do 00:03:00.06\00:03:03.83 to help alleviate that problem? 00:03:03.86\00:03:06.63 - I wanted to share today a story, a case example of 00:03:06.66\00:03:10.36 a woman who was in her mid forties, she was pre-menopausal 00:03:10.39\00:03:14.42 a little over weight and had fibrocystic breast disease. 00:03:14.45\00:03:18.17 For her it manifested as breasts that felt very lumpy, 00:03:18.20\00:03:21.99 the lumps would change according to her monthly cycle, 00:03:22.02\00:03:25.73 and she would have a lot of breast tenderness 00:03:25.76\00:03:27.57 in relationship with her monthly cycle. 00:03:27.60\00:03:29.94 In her case the interventions that helped relieve her symptoms 00:03:29.97\00:03:34.51 were very simple, weight loss was a big component 00:03:34.54\00:03:38.87 of her treatment, the adipose tissue or fat cells 00:03:38.90\00:03:42.48 store estrogen which is normally broken down 00:03:42.51\00:03:46.18 and eliminated from the body by the liver, 00:03:46.21\00:03:48.56 and that increased estrogen in the body can contribute 00:03:48.59\00:03:52.17 to fibrocystic breast disease, and also to breast cancer. 00:03:52.20\00:03:56.19 In fact women with fibrocystic breast disease, 00:03:56.22\00:03:59.37 have six times greater risk of developing breast cancer 00:03:59.40\00:04:02.86 than women without this condition. 00:04:02.89\00:04:04.73 She lost weight by following a very simple plant based diet 00:04:04.76\00:04:09.67 avoiding all animal products was another successful part 00:04:09.70\00:04:13.33 of her treatment. 00:04:13.36\00:04:14.46 Animal product coming from animals who themselves 00:04:14.49\00:04:17.54 produce hormones, hold within them hormones that 00:04:17.57\00:04:20.45 can contribute and exacerbate symptoms of fibrocystic 00:04:20.48\00:04:24.22 breast disease and other disorders. 00:04:24.25\00:04:25.92 So that was a very essential part, she also took a supplement 00:04:25.95\00:04:30.53 of Evening Primrose Oil, one gram per day, 00:04:30.94\00:04:34.20 this she felt had been a beneficial component 00:04:34.23\00:04:37.86 of her treatment, and she also very strictly avoided caffeine 00:04:37.89\00:04:43.45 even substances like chocolate which contain caffeine 00:04:43.48\00:04:47.11 even is smaller amounts, she was very careful 00:04:47.14\00:04:49.94 to avoid all of the brown drinks, sodas, anything 00:04:49.97\00:04:52.60 that would have caffeine within it. 00:04:52.63\00:04:54.66 In learning more about fibrocystic breast disease 00:04:54.69\00:04:59.19 to help this woman, and give her counsel on the best 00:04:59.22\00:05:03.90 treatment to pursue, I happen to cross some very interesting 00:05:03.93\00:05:07.27 research about how our dress affects the health 00:05:07.30\00:05:11.21 of our breasts, as early as 1978 a physician by the name of 00:05:11.24\00:05:16.47 John Douglas had his research published in the reputable 00:05:16.50\00:05:20.30 medical journal The Lancet, and that was the first link 00:05:20.33\00:05:24.50 between breast cancer and the temperature 00:05:24.53\00:05:28.06 of the breasts. 00:05:28.09\00:05:29.31 He hypothesized that bra's especially heavier material 00:05:29.34\00:05:33.68 bra's contributed to elevating the breast temperature, 00:05:33.71\00:05:37.34 which in turn contributed to increased breast disease. 00:05:37.37\00:05:40.81 Harvard University took this on and published some research 00:05:40.84\00:05:45.16 in 1991 that showed indeed women who did not wear bra's 00:05:45.19\00:05:50.52 had a 60% less incidence of breast cancer, than women who 00:05:50.55\00:05:56.21 routinely wore bras. 00:05:56.24\00:05:57.48 Further studies were done and in 1995 a really interesting book 00:05:57.51\00:06:03.39 entitled Dressed to Kill, the author is Sydney Singer, 00:06:03.42\00:06:07.93 has fascinating research about dress and breast health. 00:06:07.96\00:06:12.59 In fact a quote from Sydney Singer says "throughout 00:06:12.62\00:06:16.18 the world, the only cultures that have breast cancer 00:06:16.21\00:06:19.93 are those where there are bras. " 00:06:19.96\00:06:22.55 In addition to increasing the temperature of the breasts 00:06:22.58\00:06:26.07 the bra being a snug garment, compressed the skin, 00:06:26.10\00:06:30.18 and the breast tissue full of lymph tissue and lymph glands 00:06:30.21\00:06:34.69 the compression prevented the natural and easy flow 00:06:34.72\00:06:40.35 of lymph. 00:06:40.38\00:06:41.71 Waste products could then accumulate in the breast tissue 00:06:41.74\00:06:44.85 and it was felt that it was these that contributed 00:06:44.88\00:06:47.39 to an increased incidence of breast cancer. 00:06:47.42\00:06:50.14 A study in Japan in 2000 confirmed this saying that 00:06:50.17\00:06:53.98 not only did the compression of bras eliminate full and free 00:06:54.01\00:06:59.36 flow of lymph, but interestingly this compression 00:06:59.39\00:07:04.52 decreased the production of melatonin. 00:07:04.55\00:07:07.64 Melatonin is a hormone in our body that's very essential 00:07:07.67\00:07:10.83 to the full functioning of our immune system. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.52 In Spain in the year 2000 a study was published in 00:07:13.55\00:07:18.01 night workers or women who were exposed to great amounts of 00:07:18.04\00:07:22.52 light during the night hours that was something 00:07:22.55\00:07:26.17 that was know to decrease melatonin production, 00:07:26.20\00:07:29.07 as there melatonin levels were low, the incidence 00:07:29.10\00:07:33.40 of breast cancer rose, so we were seeing an interesting 00:07:33.43\00:07:36.97 link here. 00:07:37.00\00:07:38.59 The Glasgow Royal Infirmary here in 2001, 00:07:38.62\00:07:42.10 published research that cancerous breasts were at least 00:07:42.13\00:07:46.52 one half degree centigrade higher than breasts that were 00:07:46.55\00:07:50.94 healthy, and as recently as 2002 some breast surgeons 00:07:50.97\00:07:55.41 in Britain did a study of women where for three minutes 00:07:55.44\00:07:58.84 they wore a bra, three minutes they wore a non-restrictive 00:07:58.87\00:08:02.85 camisole top and studied the 00:08:02.88\00:08:05.22 difference in breast temperature, 00:08:05.25\00:08:06.79 breast pain, characteristics of breast tissue, 00:08:06.82\00:08:09.19 and they found that even in a time period as short as 00:08:09.22\00:08:12.11 three minutes, the women had improved health by taking 00:08:12.14\00:08:16.99 a camisole top as their undergarment rather than a bra. 00:08:17.03\00:08:21.85 Some interesting quotes that I wanted to share, 00:08:21.89\00:08:24.30 on this one from a book Child Guidance that said tight bands 00:08:24.33\00:08:29.85 hinder the action of the heart and lungs and should be avoided. 00:08:29.88\00:08:33.92 No part of the body should at any time be made uncomfortable 00:08:33.95\00:08:37.38 by clothing that compresses any organ, 00:08:37.41\00:08:39.49 or restricts its movement. 00:08:39.52\00:08:41.80 The other quoted is from health reformer, 00:08:41.83\00:08:44.24 I have heard of young ladies complain of pain is the side 00:08:44.27\00:08:47.97 when in a sitting position, I have found upon examination 00:08:48.00\00:08:51.23 that the only cause was the tight bands pressing upon 00:08:51.26\00:08:54.52 the tender nerves and veins impeding the free circulation 00:08:54.55\00:08:58.21 of blood, when the underclothing as well as the dress waist 00:08:58.24\00:09:01.69 was made loose, and the garments were suspended 00:09:01.72\00:09:04.99 from the shoulders by straps the pain disappeared. 00:09:05.02\00:09:08.56 The clothing should be worn so loose as to give the most 00:09:08.59\00:09:12.42 perfect freedom of circulation, respiration, and the exercise 00:09:12.45\00:09:17.12 of every portion of the body. 00:09:17.15\00:09:18.74 So a further recommendation if you have breast disease or 00:09:18.77\00:09:22.72 are concerned about breast disease, is to consider 00:09:22.89\00:09:25.94 this issue of dress. 00:09:25.97\00:09:27.75 If you must wear a garment that is binding 00:09:27.78\00:09:30.76 limit that to as short a time as possible, 00:09:30.79\00:09:34.09 and explore alternatives camisole tops, or undershirts 00:09:34.12\00:09:38.57 that can be non-restrictive. 00:09:38.60\00:09:40.54 One important thing is to avoid overheating 00:09:40.57\00:09:44.53 so the layering of clothing on the upper body is important 00:09:44.56\00:09:48.01 to consider that there are not greater numbers of layers 00:09:48.04\00:09:50.94 over breast tissue, than over the arms for example. 00:09:50.97\00:09:54.14 Equitability in coverage of the body is important 00:09:54.18\00:09:58.32 for that perfect circulation leads to perfect health. 00:09:58.36\00:10:01.48 One final consideration is that the undergarment should be made 00:10:01.51\00:10:05.15 of fabrics that are natural products such as silk or cotton 00:10:05.18\00:10:11.05 which help release heat, rather than hold in heat. 00:10:11.08\00:10:15.37 I don't know if you have any further experience 00:10:15.40\00:10:19.08 with fibrocystic breast disease Dr. Thrash, 00:10:19.11\00:10:21.46 I'm sure this has come your way. 00:10:21.49\00:10:23.48 We have had quite a lot of experience with 00:10:23.51\00:10:26.84 fibrocystic breast disease, in fact one of those things 00:10:26.87\00:10:30.64 that we have done to treat fibrocystic breast disease 00:10:30.95\00:10:34.02 is to use a large charcoal compress over the painful area. 00:10:34.05\00:10:39.63 If a woman has a painful breast we will make a large charcoal 00:10:39.66\00:10:43.93 compress, just made by mixing charcoal powder with water 00:10:43.96\00:10:49.35 putting it on some kind of material, such as 00:10:49.38\00:10:52.85 one of these under patient bed pads, 00:10:52.88\00:10:56.23 cut a portion that's the size that we want 00:10:56.26\00:10:59.62 not a dainty little compress just big enough to cover 00:10:59.65\00:11:03.34 the painful spot but to cover the entire breast. 00:11:03.37\00:11:08.12 This can also be used for mastitis, 00:11:08.15\00:11:11.14 the mastitis that women have during lactation 00:11:11.17\00:11:15.43 when they are nursing their children. 00:11:15.46\00:11:17.16 So that can also be very helpful, the charcoal compress 00:11:17.19\00:11:21.32 the charcoal material is simply spread on the cottony part 00:11:21.35\00:11:26.20 of the under patient bed pad, and then the filmy part is 00:11:26.23\00:11:30.86 replaced and then the edges taped with something like 00:11:30.89\00:11:35.41 masking tape, then the charcoal side 00:11:35.44\00:11:39.99 is put next to the skin and held in place by something 00:11:40.02\00:11:45.35 like a snug fitting sweat shirt. 00:11:45.38\00:11:47.34 I find this thing of the garments to be quite fascinating 00:11:47.37\00:11:53.82 I need to do more research on that and see some of the reports 00:11:53.85\00:11:58.74 that have been made already on breast health 00:11:58.77\00:12:02.82 and the kind of dress that women wear. 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.94 We have known for a long time that in cold climates 00:12:05.97\00:12:08.90 there tended to be more breast disease, and breast cancer 00:12:08.93\00:12:14.32 than in warmer climates and it was felt the chilling of 00:12:14.35\00:12:17.83 the extremities on a habitual basis was a part of what caused 00:12:17.86\00:12:23.52 the breast disease in women who lived in colder climates. 00:12:23.55\00:12:28.17 I have some pictures that I would like to show you 00:12:28.20\00:12:31.82 about the subject of breast disease, and the first one is 00:12:31.85\00:12:36.03 a disease of the nipple, or a disorder of the nipples, 00:12:36.06\00:12:40.20 and you will see on your screen a nipple in an older woman 00:12:40.23\00:12:45.11 with a little droplet of blood right at the nipple. 00:12:45.14\00:12:51.32 Now interestingly enough one would think right off 00:12:51.35\00:12:54.75 "well oh blood from the nipple" that must surely mean something 00:12:54.78\00:12:59.42 really serious like cancer. 00:12:59.45\00:13:01.10 It is often a little lesion but, it's most likely 00:13:01.13\00:13:05.92 a benign lesion, in this case you will see, 00:13:05.95\00:13:10.01 in the next graphic that I have for you, 00:13:10.04\00:13:12.44 you will see what caused the problem 00:13:12.47\00:13:15.61 in this nipple discharge. 00:13:15.64\00:13:17.93 You will notice that on the right of your screen 00:13:17.96\00:13:22.05 there is a little V which actually represents 00:13:22.08\00:13:25.97 the suture material that the surgeon left he took out 00:13:26.00\00:13:30.20 this little portion of breast, and he opened the duct 00:13:30.23\00:13:35.79 which you can see as sort of a bluish streak, 00:13:35.82\00:13:39.44 a broad bluish streak pointing toward the left of your screen 00:13:39.47\00:13:44.48 from that V shaped suture material. 00:13:44.51\00:13:47.40 Then immediately after that a lavender colored bump, 00:13:47.43\00:13:53.75 or little lump that sticks straight up. 00:13:53.78\00:13:57.77 That is the intraductal Papilloma, and it was this 00:13:57.80\00:14:03.44 that caused the bleeding. 00:14:03.47\00:14:05.00 You will see also a little spot where there had been 00:14:05.03\00:14:08.03 an ulceration of the duct and that too 00:14:08.06\00:14:10.42 was a cause of bleeding. 00:14:10.45\00:14:13.19 It's a very benign disease and taking it out is a complete cure 00:14:13.23\00:14:17.82 for this kind of disorder, rarely it is felt by some 00:14:17.85\00:14:23.15 that these Papillomas can become malignant. 00:14:23.18\00:14:26.34 I don't know that I have ever actually seen one 00:14:26.38\00:14:29.68 become malignant, but some authorities researching 00:14:29.71\00:14:33.45 in this field do believe that they can be. 00:14:33.48\00:14:36.49 Now the next graphic shows a more serious disorder. 00:14:36.52\00:14:40.65 This is what is called a breast cancer in situ 00:14:40.68\00:14:45.22 In situ is a Latin term meaning in the site where it formed. 00:14:45.25\00:14:50.05 So inside this duct you will see a mass, 00:14:50.08\00:14:54.19 you will see the round outside perimeter of the duct 00:14:54.22\00:14:59.50 and then a bunch of reddish pink, or pinkish red 00:14:59.53\00:15:04.57 granular material, then on the very inside 00:15:04.60\00:15:08.37 some crumbly material which actually represents blood. 00:15:08.40\00:15:11.94 That blood may be there from the operation that was done 00:15:11.97\00:15:16.24 to take this out. 00:15:16.27\00:15:17.27 This in situ carcinoma of the breast is the most favorable 00:15:17.30\00:15:21.65 type of cancer of the breast, it is 100% curable 00:15:21.68\00:15:25.28 with surgery, so just take it out, it's cured, gone for good. 00:15:25.31\00:15:31.31 But if it is left in, it may cross the boundary 00:15:31.34\00:15:35.37 of that outside perimeter, so my next picture will show 00:15:35.40\00:15:39.72 you where it is breaking through, this is still 00:15:39.75\00:15:42.85 a cancer in situ, but is breaking through the boundary 00:15:42.88\00:15:48.90 of the duct itself, the structure that holds 00:15:48.93\00:15:53.34 the duct in place. 00:15:53.37\00:15:55.06 You will see that almost in the center, a little to the left 00:15:55.09\00:15:57.76 of the center, you will see certain round nests of tissue 00:15:57.79\00:16:01.96 that's where it's breaking into the breast tissue itself 00:16:01.99\00:16:06.31 and can become an invasive cancer. 00:16:06.34\00:16:09.04 But there is an interesting phenomena that you see going on 00:16:09.07\00:16:12.28 here, do you see those tiny black dots in the left upper 00:16:12.31\00:16:17.38 corner of the screen? 00:16:17.41\00:16:19.27 Those blackish dots are actually deep, deep purple, 00:16:19.30\00:16:23.70 they are lymphocytes that are guarding the breast itself 00:16:23.73\00:16:29.54 from invasion and also from the conversion of this in situ 00:16:29.57\00:16:35.33 cancer to and invasive cancer. 00:16:35.36\00:16:38.23 Very important reaction on the part of the body itself, 00:16:38.26\00:16:42.63 now we can encourage this kind of defense, 00:16:42.66\00:16:45.45 this is a powerful defense and doubtless has kept this 00:16:45.48\00:16:49.43 person from getting and invasive cancer for years. 00:16:49.46\00:16:52.76 And as long as those lymphocytes are there as a garrison 00:16:52.79\00:16:58.57 against the spread of this cancer it will be inhibited 00:16:58.60\00:17:02.93 in it's growth. 00:17:02.96\00:17:04.35 So we need to learn how to keep this army of this garrison 00:17:04.38\00:17:10.39 of soldiers in good health and one way is by of course the 00:17:10.42\00:17:14.77 most healthful lifestyle that you can lead. 00:17:14.80\00:17:19.08 Plenty of outdoor exercise, and air, and sunshine, 00:17:19.11\00:17:23.77 plenty of water, good food, high in fiber, high in 00:17:23.80\00:17:29.25 a lot of natural nutrients, all of this can keep this army 00:17:29.28\00:17:33.70 in good health. 00:17:33.74\00:17:34.91 Avoid high sugary foods, high fat foods, refined protein foods 00:17:34.94\00:17:41.22 we're learning now can also be a hazard to this army. 00:17:41.25\00:17:46.28 Now the next slide shows the full blown cancer of the breast, 00:17:46.31\00:17:52.29 notice here that these ducts are just spreading all over 00:17:52.32\00:17:59.12 it is at this point that it may also spread to organs other than 00:17:59.15\00:18:05.17 the breast itself, and so here you have seen the progression 00:18:05.20\00:18:08.97 of a lesion of the breast one that was benign totally and 00:18:09.00\00:18:15.59 not a problem, to one that was a potential threat, 00:18:15.62\00:18:20.58 to one that was definitely a threat, to one that was 00:18:20.61\00:18:24.47 a life threatening problem, full blown invasive ductal cancer 00:18:24.50\00:18:31.62 of the breast, that's the common garden variety 00:18:31.65\00:18:34.03 of cancer of the breast. 00:18:34.06\00:18:35.72 That kind of cancer has stimulated a reaction 00:18:35.75\00:18:39.45 on the part of the body, but that reaction has not stopped 00:18:39.48\00:18:43.17 the cancer, it has become aggressive, and is now able 00:18:43.20\00:18:46.85 to invade the tissue that the body itself has put up as 00:18:46.88\00:18:53.01 a barrier, and it even makes some of its own support 00:18:53.04\00:18:58.61 so it can stay as a malignant tumor that will not be stopped 00:18:58.64\00:19:07.31 by your ordinary means. 00:19:07.34\00:19:09.35 Surgery may be curative but is less likely now than it was 00:19:09.38\00:19:15.60 in the beginning, for this reason we recommend that 00:19:15.63\00:19:18.51 women stay always in good health, follow always 00:19:18.54\00:19:22.67 a good lifestyle, and do breast self-examination 00:19:22.70\00:19:26.67 since 80% breast lumps are discovered by the women herself 00:19:26.70\00:19:32.22 and not by her physician. 00:19:32.25\00:19:34.05 So learn when the lesion is small, at that time 00:19:34.08\00:19:39.44 it is very likely to be 100% curable. 00:19:39.47\00:19:42.58 Now we've been talking about women's breasts, 00:19:42.61\00:19:46.29 do men get cancer of the breast? 00:19:46.32\00:19:48.80 Yes! and they get other afflictions as well, 00:19:48.83\00:19:51.98 and I have asked Dr. Donald Miller, 00:19:52.01\00:19:54.55 Dr. Miller is one of our colleagues at Uchee Pines 00:19:54.58\00:19:58.09 and also does global trotting in the global mission work 00:19:58.12\00:20:03.28 that you do, we are very happy that you could be with us 00:20:03.31\00:20:06.99 in between your appointments over seas. 00:20:07.02\00:20:09.54 Welcome! 00:20:09.57\00:20:10.54 - Thank you! It's good to be here! 00:20:10.55\00:20:11.81 - You're going to talk with us today about some of the diseases 00:20:11.84\00:20:16.19 of the breast that men can have. 00:20:16.22\00:20:18.33 - Yes! You know men don't realize that we as well as women 00:20:18.36\00:20:22.65 can get breast cancer. - Yes! 00:20:22.68\00:20:24.42 And frankly if you are talking about men with breast cancer 00:20:24.45\00:20:26.69 we should be talking about the same preventions 00:20:26.72\00:20:29.04 as for a woman, there's really no difference. 00:20:29.07\00:20:31.11 A man, I forget how many thousands each year 00:20:31.14\00:20:35.21 in America die of breast cancer. 00:20:35.24\00:20:37.03 So men should do some breast self-examination also 00:20:37.06\00:20:40.76 and should live the same lifestyle, again treatment 00:20:40.79\00:20:44.18 is no where near as good as prevention, eat the good diet, 00:20:44.21\00:20:48.87 especially high is isoflavonoids like soy products are very good 00:20:48.90\00:20:53.29 you go to stores and you see these soy milk cartons now 00:20:53.33\00:20:56.25 with the pink ribbon on there, and that little loop 00:20:56.28\00:20:59.63 which is basically talking about women's breast cancer. 00:20:59.66\00:21:02.81 Men should be drinking the same soy milk, because they too 00:21:02.84\00:21:05.51 need to protect themselves, plus it has lots of other 00:21:05.54\00:21:08.17 protective values. 00:21:08.20\00:21:09.17 The main one I would like to discuss is gynecomastia 00:21:09.18\00:21:14.39 which is basically breasts in young boys. 00:21:14.42\00:21:17.48 We've all seen it, I believe we are seeing a rise in it 00:21:17.51\00:21:22.28 because we see a rise in something else in our society 00:21:22.31\00:21:24.77 or a few other things. 00:21:24.80\00:21:26.29 One there is a great rise in childhood obesity, 00:21:26.32\00:21:29.87 it's amazing how many young people now are obese 00:21:29.90\00:21:33.01 not just in this country, I do a lot of work in Japan 00:21:33.04\00:21:36.58 and even that thin nation is becoming much more corpulent 00:21:36.61\00:21:41.52 if I can use that term, since World War II 00:21:41.55\00:21:44.50 they are becoming much more westernized. 00:21:44.93\00:21:46.15 Almost anywhere you go in the world, you can see 00:21:46.18\00:21:48.38 the typical American restaurants are there too, 00:21:48.41\00:21:52.00 the fast food restaurants, so young boys developing breasts. 00:21:52.03\00:21:56.16 They can be either unilateral or bilateral, it's basically benign 00:21:56.19\00:22:01.99 there is really no major problem with it, although 00:22:02.02\00:22:04.07 there can be real social implications, 00:22:04.10\00:22:06.83 usually it will correct in a couple of years 00:22:06.86\00:22:10.53 as long as the child gets the weight under control. 00:22:10.56\00:22:14.38 I have seen grown men with what you might consider 00:22:14.41\00:22:17.70 gynecomastia, because of the fact that they've got breasts 00:22:17.73\00:22:20.31 but a lot of it is just fat hanging off the chest. 00:22:20.34\00:22:22.78 So you get the young boys get them on a good diet, 00:22:22.81\00:22:26.31 now the good diet is primary to taking care of this problem 00:22:26.34\00:22:30.03 because of the fact that... well let me just give you an 00:22:30.06\00:22:32.89 illustration here, a fact. 00:22:32.92\00:22:37.01 A cow left out in the field that just takes care of itself 00:22:37.04\00:22:40.56 eats the grass, eats the grain, and raises a calf 00:22:40.59\00:22:43.99 every once in awhile, it's not used for milk 00:22:44.02\00:22:46.51 will produce between four and six quarts of milk a day, 00:22:46.54\00:22:49.42 enough to feed it's calf. 00:22:49.45\00:22:51.45 Your low end producer in a factory farm for milking will 00:22:51.48\00:22:56.05 be twenty five quarts, it can be up to forty, eighty. 00:22:56.08\00:23:00.27 The world record cow that produces milk is 140 qts of milk 00:23:00.30\00:23:04.75 a day, now where in the world is it going to get that 00:23:04.78\00:23:07.15 capability, is only through the introduction of hormones 00:23:07.18\00:23:11.15 into the body which accelerates the growth of the mammary tissue 00:23:11.18\00:23:16.21 which accelerates the production of milk. 00:23:16.24\00:23:18.62 So if you are drinking a product coming from the cow 00:23:18.65\00:23:22.02 you yourself are taking into yourself those growth hormones, 00:23:22.05\00:23:26.71 those estrogens and whatever they are, 00:23:26.74\00:23:29.16 which is going to do the same thing in your body 00:23:29.19\00:23:32.01 make your mammary glands grow larger. 00:23:32.04\00:23:34.16 This is a real problem for women as well as men, 00:23:34.19\00:23:38.33 my recommendation is this is not wholesome food 00:23:38.36\00:23:41.03 any more, there was a time yes, no longer wholesome food. 00:23:41.06\00:23:44.21 There has been to much tweaking with those foods 00:23:44.24\00:23:47.56 that it's not safe any more so: One get the young boys 00:23:47.59\00:23:52.17 under control as far as their diets, get them away from 00:23:52.20\00:23:54.91 dairy products, especially the more refined dairy products 00:23:54.94\00:23:57.78 concentrated like cheeses, that's just got those hormones 00:23:57.81\00:24:02.06 are just packed in there Dr. Thrash. 00:24:02.09\00:24:03.71 - Yes! That is true and your recommendation is a very 00:24:03.74\00:24:07.07 good one, and that is weight control in the young boys. 00:24:07.10\00:24:12.04 We're seeing it much more, as a matter of fact 00:24:12.07\00:24:15.35 it's probably the major public health concern today 00:24:15.38\00:24:19.61 is the great rise in obesity that we are seeing. 00:24:19.64\00:24:23.86 Now a few more things about the breast, 00:24:23.89\00:24:27.50 I would like to say a few more things about 00:24:27.53\00:24:30.48 breast discharge since I showed you the blood 00:24:30.51\00:24:35.88 in the nipple due to the Intrauctal Papilloma 00:24:35.91\00:24:38.70 but I would like just to mention that most nipple discharge 00:24:38.73\00:24:43.94 is not from a malignancy. 00:24:43.97\00:24:46.96 Milky discharge is the one that we see most frequently 00:24:46.99\00:24:51.06 and both breasts when they are involved 00:24:51.09\00:24:53.97 we feel very good about that, when both breasts are involved 00:24:54.00\00:24:59.16 rather than just one alone then we feel much more confident 00:24:59.19\00:25:04.18 that it is a benign lesion. 00:25:04.21\00:25:06.34 Many more things that we could say about milk discharge 00:25:06.37\00:25:09.82 but let me say a few things about cancer of the breast. 00:25:09.85\00:25:12.96 One thing is that seaweed is know to have an inhibiting 00:25:12.99\00:25:18.82 influence on the production of breast cancer. 00:25:18.85\00:25:22.07 In various parts of Asia where seaweed is used a lot, 00:25:22.10\00:25:29.68 But when women begin to cut down on the amount of seaweed 00:25:29.72\00:25:37.27 that they eat, breast cancer rates rise, 00:25:37.30\00:25:39.95 even in Asian countries. 00:25:39.98\00:25:43.19 lodine deficiencies known to increase the likelihood 00:25:43.22\00:25:47.71 of several breast diseases, including fibrosis, 00:25:47.74\00:25:52.46 and the fibrocystic breast disease 00:25:52.50\00:25:54.10 that we spoke of earlier. 00:25:54.13\00:25:55.90 Pain in the breasts, painful breast or Mastalgia 00:25:55.93\00:26:01.21 as we call it, can be due to very simple things and not 00:26:01.24\00:26:05.23 a big problem at all. 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.14 Rosemary has been used in chili as a treatment for 00:26:07.17\00:26:12.70 breast cancer, now in this country we recommend 00:26:12.73\00:26:16.46 that women use Rosemary to diminish the likelihood 00:26:16.49\00:26:22.42 that they will get breast cancer, but we have not 00:26:22.45\00:26:25.64 in this country yet used Rosemary as a treatment for 00:26:25.67\00:26:29.98 breast cancer, but certainly it would be a good thing to 00:26:30.01\00:26:32.96 encourage one's diet to include. 00:26:32.99\00:26:38.78 I know it is a bit controversial right now, but there have been 00:26:38.81\00:26:44.70 several reports on therapeutic abortion, or abortions done 00:26:44.73\00:26:50.92 prior to the term of pregnancy and the likelihood that 00:26:50.95\00:26:56.89 there might be a relationship to cancer of the breast. 00:26:56.92\00:27:01.81 Certainly there is another reason why we can encourage 00:27:01.84\00:27:07.12 young women not to engage in abortions. 00:27:07.15\00:27:10.84 Then of course breast feeding of babies does indeed cut down 00:27:10.87\00:27:17.11 on the probability that a woman will have a 00:27:17.14\00:27:20.53 breast cancer, so we should encourage a woman to breast feed 00:27:20.56\00:27:24.67 their babies. 00:27:24.70\00:27:25.67 Now if a woman gets a cancer of the breast, then if she has 00:27:25.68\00:27:31.45 good social support, if her husband is firmly behind her 00:27:31.48\00:27:36.30 and helps her in every way that he can 00:27:36.33\00:27:38.94 to change her lifestyle, and to have a very healthful 00:27:38.97\00:27:42.19 lifestyle, then she is likely to out live her peers, 00:27:42.22\00:27:46.60 who do not have this kind of social support. 00:27:46.63\00:27:49.76 Now I hope this discussion of breast diseases, 00:27:49.79\00:27:52.50 male and female will be a blessing to you. 00:27:52.53\00:27:56.81
