Skeletal problems represent the commonest cause, 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.64 or one of the commonest causes of absenteeism from work 00:00:04.67\00:00:08.69 in this country. 00:00:08.72\00:00:09.69 As we learn how to handle skeletal problems, 00:00:09.72\00:00:14.55 we learn techniques that can help us with a wide variety 00:00:14.58\00:00:18.54 of other problems, that the human body suffers from. 00:00:18.57\00:00:21.66 In this program we will be talking about various skeletal 00:00:21.69\00:00:24.98 problems, and we hope that you will join us, so that you 00:00:25.01\00:00:27.70 can help people that you know or yourself, 00:00:27.73\00:00:30.63 with very common skeletal problems. 00:00:30.66\00:00:33.52 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health, with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:53.44\00:00:56.94 of Uchee Pines Institute and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:56.97\00:01:01.90 Even people who generally do not have broken bones, 00:01:01.93\00:01:07.21 may get broken ribs, and a broken rib can be so painful. 00:01:07.24\00:01:12.59 A person thinks, how can I ever, maybe I won't ever, 00:01:12.62\00:01:16.42 get rid of this pain, I'm going to have this pain 00:01:16.45\00:01:18.88 in my chest, wherever it is. 00:01:18.91\00:01:20.47 I'm going to have this the rest of my life. 00:01:20.50\00:01:23.93 But actually broken ribs do eventually heal, 00:01:23.96\00:01:26.99 and the pain does go away. 00:01:27.02\00:01:29.03 Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you some 00:01:29.06\00:01:32.31 about broken ribs, and help you to understand this problem 00:01:32.34\00:01:35.48 a little better. 00:01:35.51\00:01:36.66 - Well I've been there to with a broken rib, 00:01:36.69\00:01:38.77 this is an extremely painful process, and the reason why is: 00:01:38.80\00:01:42.81 Every time you breathe your rib cage goes out, 00:01:42.84\00:01:46.55 you exhale they come in, and that's painful enough 00:01:46.58\00:01:50.79 now try to sneeze or try coughing. 00:01:50.82\00:01:53.25 Sneezing is one of the most strongest impulses you can have, 00:01:53.28\00:01:58.24 and it can be stopped by the very thought of how much pain 00:01:58.27\00:02:02.57 it's going to cause you. 00:02:02.60\00:02:03.68 I've been in mid sneeze before, and just dreading it happening, 00:02:03.72\00:02:07.73 and as I get ready, it says I don't want to do this, and 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.82 my body tells it don't sneeze. 00:02:10.85\00:02:13.12 So it is extremely exquisite pain. 00:02:13.15\00:02:16.32 Often it is not a broken rib, it could be a tear in the 00:02:16.35\00:02:21.55 intercostal region, it could be some, whatever, something 00:02:21.58\00:02:26.47 is torn in the chest area. 00:02:26.50\00:02:28.30 No matter what it is, it's going to be very painful 00:02:28.33\00:02:31.55 just to breathe, to cough, to sneeze, any of these things, 00:02:31.58\00:02:34.81 and to put any pressure on it, don't even think about it. 00:02:34.84\00:02:37.78 You can't put a cast on your chest, 00:02:37.81\00:02:40.37 your chest is going to move. 00:02:40.40\00:02:42.11 To think about how to treat it, I go back in my mind, 00:02:42.14\00:02:45.95 to a farmer back in eastern Europe 150 years ago named 00:02:45.98\00:02:54.20 Priessnitz 00:02:54.23\00:02:55.20 Priessnitz was coming back from the fields one day, 00:02:55.21\00:02:57.56 riding on a wagon full of hay, for some reason, somehow, 00:02:57.59\00:03:03.73 he fell off the wagon, and the wagon wheels 00:03:03.76\00:03:06.65 rolled over his chest, he had a mess on his hands. 00:03:06.68\00:03:10.77 The doctors of the time says, "sorry," you are not going to 00:03:10.80\00:03:14.52 survive this injury. 00:03:14.55\00:03:15.52 That was an acute injury, serious, fatal injury, 00:03:15.53\00:03:19.70 in his time. 00:03:19.73\00:03:20.72 Well he did not like the diagnosis or the prognosis, 00:03:20.75\00:03:24.76 so what did this simple farmer do? 00:03:24.79\00:03:27.25 He went to a window, there was a window glass, 00:03:27.28\00:03:31.11 it was cold out, and he pressed his chest up against 00:03:31.14\00:03:35.41 the window, transferring some of the cold to his chest. 00:03:35.44\00:03:39.20 He also then took rags and cloths and dipped them 00:03:39.23\00:03:43.52 in cold water, and would apply them to his chest, 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.86 sometimes wrapping them all the way around his torso, 00:03:46.89\00:03:49.77 to cover the area of his injuries. 00:03:49.80\00:03:51.71 It wasn't a very long time before he started to heal, 00:03:51.74\00:03:55.62 of course he got extremely well, and perfectly well, 00:03:55.65\00:03:58.44 to the point that he thought, I have something here. 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.87 and he started a school in a sanitarium, more or less, 00:04:01.90\00:04:07.46 that he would bring patients in, and his major treatment modality 00:04:07.49\00:04:11.07 was "cold", cold cloths, cold pours, cold water of any type. 00:04:11.10\00:04:15.93 He was unbelievably successful, Kings and Queens, heads of state 00:04:15.96\00:04:20.47 would come to his simple little place, to learn what to do. 00:04:20.50\00:04:23.67 What does that tell us that we can do? 00:04:23.70\00:04:25.95 If you injure yourself, I would recommend applying cold 00:04:25.98\00:04:30.10 to the injured area of the rib, cold is extremely good, 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.84 it's analgesic, it brings more blood to the area, 00:04:33.87\00:04:38.06 and it can speed healing. 00:04:38.09\00:04:39.85 After you've done cold, you can't keep cold on 24/7, 00:04:39.88\00:04:43.21 I like to, whenever I injure my ribs, I will put something 00:04:43.24\00:04:47.15 confining around, perhaps a very wide ACE bandage, 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.78 just to try to keep myself in place. 00:04:50.81\00:04:52.91 There is something else you can do for the ribs, 00:04:52.94\00:04:56.51 if you have some surgical tape, 00:04:56.54\00:04:58.65 about 11/2 or 2 inches wide surgical tape 00:04:58.68\00:05:01.50 find approximately where the injury is, 00:05:01.53\00:05:04.67 and take about an 8 inch piece of tape, 00:05:04.73\00:05:07.62 and place the center of it right over the injured area, 00:05:07.65\00:05:11.18 push it on one side of your chest, and then pull it tight 00:05:11.21\00:05:14.42 to the other side. 00:05:14.45\00:05:15.84 Take a second strip, and put it at right angles, 00:05:15.87\00:05:19.02 making a big X on your chest there, 00:05:19.05\00:05:22.06 and then take a 3rd piece, put it between two of those legs 00:05:22.09\00:05:25.80 and a 4th piece between those, until you have 00:05:25.83\00:05:28.95 about 8 pieces of tape, you are stretching these things 00:05:28.98\00:05:31.80 across your chest area, and until you got these 8 radiations 00:05:31.83\00:05:36.88 coming out of your injured area. 00:05:36.91\00:05:40.02 This will help you hold the ribs in place, 00:05:40.05\00:05:43.23 now you want to keep this in that situation 00:05:43.26\00:05:46.57 for a number of weeks, two or three weeks. 00:05:46.60\00:05:48.45 You might get a little bit of irritation from the tape, 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.92 if so, try to get some hypo- allergenic tape, 00:05:51.95\00:05:53.76 or some tape that does not give you the problem. 00:05:53.79\00:05:55.90 But we find that this is a pretty nice treatment 00:05:55.93\00:05:58.73 for mobilizing and stabilizing the rib area, 00:05:58.76\00:06:02.51 other than that, it just takes time, it takes vitamin R. 00:06:02.54\00:06:06.59 Vitamin rest, vitamin T, vitamin time, to finally 00:06:06.63\00:06:10.44 heal this wound. 00:06:10.47\00:06:12.03 It's a serious wound, but it's not a death dealing one. 00:06:12.06\00:06:15.11 Now if you got a real full break that might go down 00:06:15.14\00:06:18.95 and puncture the lung, this is a serious one, 00:06:18.98\00:06:20.75 and you've got to get to a hospital 00:06:20.78\00:06:22.29 and get it taken care of. 00:06:22.32\00:06:23.54 But most of them are just small fine cracks, 00:06:23.57\00:06:26.12 in the ribs, they will repair in their own time. 00:06:26.15\00:06:29.47 So Dr. Thrash, it is hard to breathe when you have them 00:06:29.50\00:06:32.42 and everything else, but that's nature's way 00:06:32.45\00:06:34.79 of saying don't mess with me, I want to get myself well. 00:06:34.83\00:06:37.70 - Yes and strapping of the chest it will indeed relieve the pain. 00:06:37.73\00:06:43.40 I would like to talk to you a bit about scoliosis. 00:06:43.43\00:06:47.68 Scoliosis is something that begins often in childhood, 00:06:47.71\00:06:51.29 and I've asked Justina to assist me 00:06:51.32\00:06:54.61 with this little demonstration. 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.46 It's a thing that happens on the back, and a lot of times 00:06:56.49\00:07:01.57 it begins in childhood. 00:07:01.60\00:07:03.69 The child does not have any awareness at all 00:07:03.72\00:07:07.94 that it is going on, the parent notices that the spine may be 00:07:07.97\00:07:13.11 getting crooked. 00:07:13.14\00:07:14.59 With Scoliosis it is an S shaped curve, or a C shaped 00:07:14.62\00:07:20.61 curve that you get with the Scoliosis. 00:07:20.64\00:07:23.48 With kyphosis, that means that the chest is out like this, 00:07:23.51\00:07:30.67 a great big hump out like this, may even be a barrel chest 00:07:30.70\00:07:34.69 which is out in front and out in back, with the ribs holding 00:07:34.72\00:07:40.08 the chest in a kyphotic condition. 00:07:40.12\00:07:43.30 A big chest that is humped out this way, that's kyphosis. 00:07:43.33\00:07:49.82 Some kind of curvature down here in this area, where there is an 00:07:49.85\00:07:54.99 exaggeration of the lower dotic curve, 00:07:55.02\00:07:57.05 that's a very common place for people to get a back curvature. 00:07:57.08\00:08:03.78 If a child is getting scoliosis, the parent may not be aware 00:08:03.81\00:08:12.03 of it by seeing an S shaped spine, 00:08:12.06\00:08:15.57 but if the child will just bend over, 00:08:15.60\00:08:20.91 and let the arms hang down, one shoulder blade or the other 00:08:20.94\00:08:27.54 depending on where the major part of the scoliosis is, 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.91 will stick up. 00:08:30.94\00:08:32.62 If one shoulder blade is a little higher than the other, 00:08:32.65\00:08:37.39 then you know that the child is developing scoliosis, 00:08:37.42\00:08:42.58 and that can be very helpful in making an early diagnosis, 00:08:42.61\00:08:46.49 so that things can be rectified if possible, 00:08:46.52\00:08:49.53 or if not, the orthopedic surgeon can assist 00:08:49.56\00:08:54.27 with some kind of treatment. 00:08:54.30\00:08:55.78 The kind of treatment that you can do in the home, 00:08:55.81\00:09:00.58 is to avoid tight bands around the waist, and if 00:09:00.61\00:09:05.72 you can do that, that will be helpful. 00:09:05.75\00:09:09.29 If the child is not wearing tight bands, 00:09:09.32\00:09:11.60 then you are not going to have much help from that. 00:09:11.63\00:09:14.56 Another thing, is somebody over weight? 00:09:14.59\00:09:18.59 With any kind of skeletal problem, the child or the adult 00:09:18.62\00:09:23.42 will be much better off, if they have a normal weight. 00:09:23.45\00:09:27.64 I have a graphic for you that illustrates what 00:09:27.67\00:09:31.90 good weight is, what proper weight is. 00:09:31.93\00:09:34.38 I will first show you what the weight is in an average adult. 00:09:34.41\00:09:39.22 By a rule of thumb, 100 Ibs. for the first 5 feet, 00:09:39.25\00:09:44.22 and for women 5 Ibs. per inches thereafter, 00:09:44.25\00:09:48.31 for men 6-7 inches thereafter depending on how muscular 00:09:48.34\00:09:53.43 the man is. 00:09:53.46\00:09:54.65 That's the average, the average for a person who is in health. 00:09:54.68\00:09:59.13 But often we are very interested in the health when a person 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.74 is not well. 00:10:02.77\00:10:03.82 Perhaps a they have cancer, or perhaps they have emphysema, 00:10:03.85\00:10:08.28 or some other serious health problem, and it's advantageous 00:10:08.31\00:10:13.39 for them to weigh less than the 00:10:13.42\00:10:16.67 average healthy adult would weigh. 00:10:16.70\00:10:19.23 So the therapeutic weight for women is different from the 00:10:19.26\00:10:23.75 average weight for women. 00:10:23.78\00:10:25.22 Here you see therapeutic weight in disease and the elderly. 00:10:25.25\00:10:28.98 For women, multiply the height by 3.5 and subtract 108, 00:10:29.01\00:10:35.64 and that equals the total weight. 00:10:35.67\00:10:38.30 An example is a 5'6" woman 66 in. multiply that by 3.5 00:10:38.33\00:10:46.38 and that gives us 231 Lbs, then if you subtract 108 from 231 00:10:46.41\00:10:54.78 that gives us 123 o approximately 7 Lbs less 00:10:54.81\00:10:59.81 than the same person would, we would expect that she could 00:10:59.84\00:11:03.54 weigh healthfully, in good health and not fighting 00:11:03.57\00:11:07.25 any kind of disease, and also in youth. 00:11:07.28\00:11:10.31 For men the formula is about the same except that the factors 00:11:10.34\00:11:17.28 are a little different. 00:11:17.31\00:11:18.39 In a man, it's the height times 4 minus 128, 00:11:18.42\00:11:24.48 and that should be the total weight. 00:11:24.51\00:11:26.32 As an example a 70 in. man multiply that by 4, equals 280, 00:11:26.35\00:11:33.15 280 minus 128 is 152 Lbs., and that should be 00:11:33.18\00:11:39.17 the therapeutic weight for a man who's fighting some kind 00:11:39.20\00:11:42.71 of serious illness. 00:11:42.74\00:11:44.57 Being thin is a blessing in a lot of ways, and there are some 00:11:44.60\00:11:52.93 diseases that people can have that can make us very 00:11:52.96\00:11:57.28 happy when they weigh the therapeutic weight. 00:11:57.31\00:12:00.28 TMJ or tempromandibular joint problem. 00:12:00.31\00:12:06.63 This is a serious matter for some people, they can't eat 00:12:06.66\00:12:11.06 they can't chew, they don't have an easy head, 00:12:11.09\00:12:15.31 and this makes a serious problem in some peoples lives. 00:12:15.34\00:12:19.46 Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you now about 00:12:19.49\00:12:22.75 tempromandibular joint disease. 00:12:22.78\00:12:25.77 - This is one I don't have, and I'm glad I don't have it 00:12:25.80\00:12:29.31 although I am surprised I do not. 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.10 TMJ can be caused by a number of things, 00:12:31.13\00:12:36.48 one that I've read about, and I can see how it can happen, 00:12:36.51\00:12:40.91 have you ever gone to the dentist office, 00:12:40.94\00:12:42.84 and he's sitting there looking in your mouth, 00:12:42.88\00:12:44.77 or she is looking in your mouth, 00:12:44.81\00:12:46.21 and they give you a shot of Novocain, 00:12:46.25\00:12:48.32 because they really wanted to get in there without much 00:12:48.35\00:12:51.42 impediment, and then say open wide, and you do, and they say 00:12:51.45\00:12:54.93 open wider, and you open wider, and pretty soon your head is 00:12:54.96\00:12:58.52 completely wide open, and this can cause some serious problems 00:12:58.55\00:13:03.71 later on, because you over extend your jaws which really 00:13:03.74\00:13:07.95 don't go back together right again, so what you want to do 00:13:07.98\00:13:10.89 is when they say open wide, you want to open it not quite as far 00:13:10.92\00:13:18.36 and that might be good. 00:13:18.39\00:13:19.77 The TMJ can be caused by separate different problems, 00:13:19.80\00:13:24.67 like you could have some arthritis in your joint, 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.54 basically a wearing away the articulating joint, 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.78 so when your lower jaw moves up and down where it connects 00:13:29.81\00:13:34.66 back here at the tempromandibular joint, 00:13:34.69\00:13:36.93 it causes some rubbing, which causes the pain, and therefore 00:13:36.96\00:13:40.49 you've got your TMJ, your tempromandibular joint 00:13:40.52\00:13:43.72 dysfunction. 00:13:43.75\00:13:44.79 Normally it is characterized by pain right about where 00:13:44.82\00:13:48.14 the joint is, that can radiate up to the temples, or down 00:13:48.17\00:13:51.48 to the neck. 00:13:51.51\00:13:52.48 There are a few things that you can do with that, 00:13:52.49\00:13:54.27 you can try doing some pressure on the area, we call it, 00:13:54.30\00:13:59.32 trigger point therapy, and sometimes you can get relief 00:13:59.35\00:14:02.68 by pressing on an area and holding it there for awhile 00:14:02.71\00:14:06.58 and then releasing your pressure. 00:14:06.61\00:14:08.31 One thing I've learned, when I'm doing some trigger points 00:14:08.34\00:14:11.27 on people, they can be extremely sensitive, and when you press 00:14:11.30\00:14:15.69 on these things, and you've got it smashed down pretty good, 00:14:15.72\00:14:19.80 they are going through some pain, what you want to do is 00:14:19.83\00:14:22.88 divert their attention by doing something with your other hand. 00:14:22.91\00:14:26.80 What I like to do, I like to go back and give a little scalp 00:14:26.83\00:14:30.47 friction with my finger tips as I'm pushing here, 00:14:30.50\00:14:33.32 or I might massage their shoulder while I'm pushing here. 00:14:33.35\00:14:36.68 Now that I've got two major inputs of sensations coming 00:14:36.71\00:14:42.51 in, and the brain really can't deal with them all, 00:14:42.54\00:14:45.66 and so they will both be lessened, 00:14:45.69\00:14:47.78 and you want to lessen the pain as much as you can. 00:14:47.81\00:14:50.80 There are some other things that you can do, 00:14:50.83\00:14:53.57 applying heat three or four times a day, 00:14:53.60\00:14:57.27 a lot of heat, you can use a heating pad, 00:14:57.30\00:14:59.53 you can put it in front of a heating lamp, 00:14:59.56\00:15:01.12 but you want to heat up the area. 00:15:01.15\00:15:03.04 You can tell if a person has TMJ, if when they open 00:15:03.07\00:15:06.87 and close their mouth, you hear a clicking sound. 00:15:06.90\00:15:09.80 That clicking sound means that they don't have good functioning 00:15:09.83\00:15:12.91 in the joint and that can cause a lot of pain. 00:15:12.94\00:15:15.69 TMJ can be very, very painful for the person. 00:15:15.72\00:15:19.26 We recommend a person with TMJ to fast, at least one day 00:15:19.29\00:15:25.35 a month, but perhaps even a few times a week 00:15:25.38\00:15:29.00 not the whole day, but a meal a week, 00:15:29.03\00:15:31.45 you need to let your jaws rest. 00:15:31.48\00:15:34.11 A person with TMJ should eat a meal and rest 00:15:34.14\00:15:37.59 at least five hours in between that meal and the next meal 00:15:37.62\00:15:41.94 to let their jaws completely recover. 00:15:41.97\00:15:44.66 A person with TMJ should not keep their jaws clenched 00:15:44.69\00:15:48.86 all the time, when they are sitting there, 00:15:48.89\00:15:52.19 keep their teeth apart when they are not talking, 00:15:52.22\00:15:56.92 or doing anything else, and a good way to do this, it to put 00:15:56.95\00:15:59.86 your tongue on the roof of your mouth, when you do that 00:15:59.89\00:16:03.35 you pretty much force your bottom jaw down a little bit 00:16:03.67\00:16:06.31 and your teeth aren't together. 00:16:06.34\00:16:07.77 People with TMJ have a tendency to grind their teeth at night, 00:16:07.80\00:16:12.53 and if you practice keeping your jaws apart during the day, 00:16:12.56\00:16:16.41 it might carry on over in to the night. 00:16:16.44\00:16:18.98 But there also some nice things that you can purchase 00:16:19.01\00:16:21.60 that you can put into your mouth which will keep you 00:16:21.63\00:16:24.63 from injuring your teeth in this grinding process. 00:16:24.66\00:16:27.20 There are other bite plates that you can purchase 00:16:27.23\00:16:29.68 that will keep you from grinding your teeth at night. 00:16:29.71\00:16:32.74 Good Things To Do. You need to learn how to relax, 00:16:32.77\00:16:35.70 people are just to tense all the time, 00:16:35.73\00:16:37.99 learn to relax the jaws and that will help out. 00:16:38.02\00:16:42.06 Keep away from chewy foods, things that take a lot of 00:16:42.09\00:16:46.22 chewing, I'm not talking about a carrot, yes it takes a lot 00:16:46.25\00:16:49.62 of chewing, so you might not want to eat a whole lot 00:16:49.65\00:16:51.73 of carrots, you might want to chop them up first. 00:16:51.76\00:16:53.56 But especially that are gummy, that gives you a clue 00:16:53.59\00:16:57.07 right there, don't chew gum, 00:16:57.10\00:16:58.58 not a very good thing to be doing if you have TMJ. 00:16:58.61\00:17:02.05 You will want to drink through a straw, which will be helpful 00:17:02.08\00:17:06.00 for a person, and chew on both side of the mouth, 00:17:06.03\00:17:09.73 even though one side might be tender, chew on both sides, 00:17:09.76\00:17:13.03 so you do not strengthen one muscle, and weaken the other 00:17:13.06\00:17:16.09 muscle, you want to chew on both sides. 00:17:16.12\00:17:18.08 There are some exercises that you can also do, 00:17:18.11\00:17:21.80 you can take your hands, wash them nicely, 00:17:21.83\00:17:24.20 you never put your fingers in your mouth, 00:17:24.23\00:17:26.81 unless they have been washed, because you don't know where 00:17:26.84\00:17:29.21 they have been the last time. 00:17:29.24\00:17:30.56 You will want to take your finger, 00:17:30.59\00:17:31.81 and lets say your pain is behind your right eye, 00:17:31.84\00:17:34.88 you take your right index finger put it in the right side 00:17:34.91\00:17:37.39 of your mouth, put it up behind the upper molar, 00:17:37.42\00:17:41.98 and push behind that molar, pointing in the middle 00:17:42.01\00:17:45.17 of your head, and give it a good push for two 00:17:45.20\00:17:47.77 or three seconds and then relax it, and push it again 00:17:47.80\00:17:51.32 and relax it, do this a few times, you could also do some 00:17:51.35\00:17:54.97 jaw exercises, put your thumbs below your jaw, and then 00:17:55.00\00:17:59.54 open your jaw, giving a little bit of pressure, exercising, 00:17:59.57\00:18:04.89 then put a hand on the side of your jaw, and push over, a hand 00:18:04.92\00:18:08.99 on the other side and push over, another nice one is 00:18:09.02\00:18:13.01 take your fingers, put them inside your cheeks, 00:18:13.04\00:18:15.82 you know how children do this sometimes, and you pull it out 00:18:15.85\00:18:19.90 until you just start to feel the pain, hold it for a slight 00:18:19.93\00:18:23.31 period of time, and then release it again. 00:18:23.34\00:18:25.90 Some people, when they are talking on the telephone, 00:18:25.93\00:18:28.86 they cradle the telephone in their neck, 00:18:28.89\00:18:30.91 so they can go about other business, don't do that. 00:18:30.94\00:18:33.51 If you have a tendency to do this, get a headset, 00:18:33.54\00:18:36.93 and so you do not have to do this type of an action. 00:18:36.96\00:18:40.15 When you are sleeping at night, don't sleep on your 00:18:40.18\00:18:42.55 stomach, don't sleep on your side, don't sleep with your 00:18:42.58\00:18:45.50 hands behind your head, try to lay as much as possible, 00:18:45.53\00:18:48.85 straight on your bed, and it will help you. 00:18:48.88\00:18:51.59 Ice can be extremely good for this, wherever you might 00:18:52.01\00:18:55.36 feel your tension and your pain. 00:18:55.39\00:18:56.70 Let's say you feel the tension from your TMJ radiating 00:18:56.73\00:18:59.68 up and down your neck, apply ice to this for a short period 00:18:59.71\00:19:02.84 of time, and then start doing some stretches to that area, 00:19:02.87\00:19:07.28 stretch and do ice on the other side, stretch it, 00:19:07.31\00:19:10.71 do stretching of your head, even if you do not have TMJ, 00:19:10.74\00:19:15.29 it's good to do some stretching exercises, right, left, 00:19:15.32\00:19:19.63 forward, backwards, with resistance, pushing against 00:19:19.66\00:19:23.88 resistance, pushing against resistance, these things 00:19:23.91\00:19:27.01 can find very good benefit if you have the TMJ. 00:19:27.04\00:19:31.69 Some simple things you can try to do, again I can't talk 00:19:31.72\00:19:36.55 as an authority, because I've never had it, but if you had it, 00:19:36.58\00:19:39.25 try these simple things, and I believe that no matter what, 00:19:39.28\00:19:42.91 you are going to get some relief, if not complete relief, 00:19:42.94\00:19:45.92 from your problem, I think those things are pretty good, 00:19:45.95\00:19:48.51 and I think you know someone that has TMJ, 00:19:48.54\00:19:50.86 do you know anything else than they do? 00:19:50.89\00:19:51.93 - Yes, No, those things are very good, 00:19:51.96\00:19:55.21 I do know someone who has TMJ, someone in my family, 00:19:55.24\00:19:58.67 and an allergy turned out to be big cause of her bruxism, 00:19:58.70\00:20:05.00 which is the grinding of the teeth at night. 00:20:05.03\00:20:08.76 The bite plate can be very helpful that's worn at night, 00:20:08.79\00:20:12.37 and sometimes has to be worn for some years. 00:20:12.40\00:20:15.97 We do hope that these simple things that Dr. Miller mentioned 00:20:16.00\00:20:20.93 for you, can be helpful for the TMJ. 00:20:20.96\00:20:24.64 If a person has dislocations, these can be nicely treated 00:20:24.67\00:20:29.92 with just some very simple things that you can usually do 00:20:29.95\00:20:33.67 at home. 00:20:33.70\00:20:34.67 Now if these occur in a place where you can get professional 00:20:34.68\00:20:37.86 help, you may want to do that, because there may be some 00:20:37.89\00:20:41.06 problem with the joint, that makes it slip out of joint. 00:20:41.09\00:20:45.66 I've asked Justina Thomas to help me with this, 00:20:45.69\00:20:49.97 and we will start with a pretended elbow 00:20:50.00\00:20:53.86 that is out of joint. 00:20:53.89\00:20:55.30 Now if she actually had an elbow out of joint, 00:20:55.33\00:20:58.33 she would not be so free in moving this arm, 00:20:58.36\00:21:02.40 but would probably hand it to me in a very gentle way. 00:21:02.43\00:21:06.31 When someone has an elbow that is out of joint, 00:21:06.34\00:21:11.26 you can usually tell it by simply looking at it. 00:21:11.29\00:21:13.82 It looks out of joint, and so you simply put your thumb 00:21:13.85\00:21:18.75 between the two bones, and put a little traction on it, 00:21:18.78\00:21:23.90 like this, and then rotate, so it's pressure there, pull, 00:21:23.93\00:21:30.64 and twist a little bit, and usually it will roll right back 00:21:30.67\00:21:36.40 into joint, and by looking at it you will be able to tell 00:21:36.43\00:21:39.83 which direction you should turn it most of the time. 00:21:39.86\00:21:43.79 That's very helpful with an elbow joint, that's out of joint 00:21:43.82\00:21:48.15 and you don't have a doctor available. 00:21:48.18\00:21:50.80 Another thing is a shoulder out of joint. 00:21:50.83\00:21:53.79 Same kind of thing, these often occur in children, 00:21:53.82\00:21:59.05 when they are walking along with a parent, 00:21:59.08\00:22:00.61 they have the hand over the head, the parent is holding 00:22:00.64\00:22:03.91 the child's hand, and then the child starts to fall, 00:22:03.94\00:22:07.90 and the parent jerks the child's arm, and jerks it out of joint. 00:22:07.93\00:22:12.10 That's a typical scenario, and if you are the only person 00:22:12.13\00:22:16.58 around, who can put it into joint, you may want to just 00:22:16.61\00:22:19.94 put one hand up here, the patient won't like it, 00:22:19.97\00:22:23.95 so don't spend a lot of time doing it, 00:22:23.98\00:22:25.85 pull, you are putting a little pressure here, and pushing away 00:22:25.88\00:22:30.66 and a little traction, and again it's a little twist, 00:22:30.69\00:22:34.14 and it will often just go right back into joint, 00:22:34.17\00:22:36.70 and the person has very little difficulty with that. 00:22:36.73\00:22:40.57 A hip out of joint, is much more difficult, but again, 00:22:40.60\00:22:47.20 if you are the only person around, you should try to do it. 00:22:47.23\00:22:50.97 The person lies down, you put your foot in the groin 00:22:51.00\00:22:55.95 on the side where the out of joint hip is, 00:22:55.98\00:23:00.56 then pull on the foot, and again it's rotated a little bit, 00:23:00.59\00:23:06.59 and often it will go right back into the joint, 00:23:06.62\00:23:10.00 with a great big scream from the patient. 00:23:10.03\00:23:12.67 Thank you very much Justina. 00:23:12.70\00:23:15.67 Osteoporosis has some very good causes, 00:23:15.70\00:23:21.54 and we're going to show you some things that cause 00:23:21.57\00:23:25.72 osteoporosis, and Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you 00:23:25.75\00:23:28.86 those causes of osteoporosis. 00:23:28.89\00:23:32.22 - Well you can't really have a discussion on bones and things, 00:23:32.25\00:23:37.17 unless you discuss what causes the problems with the bones. 00:23:37.20\00:23:40.61 Bones are made up of a lot of calcium and it's lack of calcium 00:23:40.64\00:23:46.89 that causes us to get osteoporosis, 00:23:46.92\00:23:48.89 and we're going show you on the screen a few things that 00:23:48.92\00:23:52.44 cause us to loose our bone calcium. 00:23:52.47\00:23:55.32 You see the first thing on the list is protein, 00:23:55.35\00:23:58.28 protein goes up, calcium goes down, you see alcohol, 00:23:58.31\00:24:01.87 It's a bone waster, tobacco, 1% of your bone calcium lost 00:24:01.90\00:24:05.76 every year, if you are post menopausal. 00:24:05.79\00:24:07.65 Coffee and tea, cola and chocolate, 00:24:07.68\00:24:09.88 1.4% of your bone calcium every year if you are post menopausal, 00:24:09.91\00:24:14.06 it's gone right down the drain. 00:24:14.09\00:24:15.42 Then you have the soft drinks, phosphoric acid, 00:24:15.45\00:24:18.33 they call them soft drinks because they make your bones 00:24:18.36\00:24:20.21 soft, that's what I say anyway. 00:24:20.24\00:24:23.85 The next things Aluminum compounds - like antacids, 00:24:23.88\00:24:27.48 baking powder, pickles with alum, all cause us 00:24:27.51\00:24:30.18 to loose our bone calcium, high phosphorous compounds 00:24:30.22\00:24:33.59 like soft drinks, baking powder, diets high in sodium, 00:24:33.62\00:24:37.38 sounds like the American diet to me, that causes us to loose 00:24:37.41\00:24:40.51 our bone calcium, A diet high in sugar, 00:24:40.54\00:24:43.41 here we are America, thyroid supplements, 00:24:43.44\00:24:46.13 drugs, steroids, tetracycline, all of these items cause us 00:24:46.16\00:24:50.01 to loose our bone calcium, and the bone calcium 00:24:50.04\00:24:53.10 is what we need to keep our bones strong. 00:24:53.13\00:24:55.12 So as we stay away from these things, we don't have the 00:24:55.15\00:24:58.92 major problem of loosing our bone calcium. 00:24:58.95\00:25:01.25 The countries that lead the world in osteoporosis, 00:25:01.28\00:25:06.52 lead the world in violating these particular things we 00:25:06.55\00:25:10.11 just saw, they use these things in abundance. 00:25:10.14\00:25:11.97 Go to a country that does not have osteoporosis, 00:25:12.00\00:25:15.61 and see how they live, and then live like them in one sense, 00:25:15.64\00:25:19.54 as far as their dietary habits. 00:25:19.57\00:25:21.31 So I think we should stay away from these things. 00:25:21.34\00:25:24.43 Another thing we need for osteoporosis, our bones need 00:25:24.46\00:25:27.56 a daily shake up, we need to get out and exercise. 00:25:27.59\00:25:30.44 It's a woman who gets good exercise, 00:25:30.47\00:25:32.17 bone stressing exercise, making those muscles 00:25:32.20\00:25:35.59 pull on those bones, you are going to find that you have 00:25:35.62\00:25:38.39 stronger bones, because every time you stress the bones, 00:25:38.42\00:25:41.67 the bones say we need some more calcium over here. 00:25:41.70\00:25:44.42 Those are some simple things Dr. Thrash that will help us 00:25:44.45\00:25:47.34 to have good strong bones until we die of old age. 00:25:47.37\00:25:49.71 - Oh yes! And osteoporosis is one of those things that 00:25:49.74\00:25:53.69 hastens death in some people. 00:25:53.72\00:25:55.16 Interestingly one of the places that a lot of people get 00:25:55.19\00:25:59.44 osteoporosis is in the maxilla, or in the mandible, 00:25:59.47\00:26:04.92 the two jaw bones, around the teeth, and one of the reasons 00:26:04.95\00:26:09.57 for that is because of infection. 00:26:09.60\00:26:11.56 A little pyorrhea can start with a little infection, 00:26:11.59\00:26:15.98 the change in the PH of the surrounding bone, can encourage 00:26:16.01\00:26:22.19 the loss of bone and fairly soon the tooth becomes wobbly 00:26:22.22\00:26:28.62 in the socket, and all because of a little infection, 00:26:28.65\00:26:32.73 and this then makes the tooth ready to fall out. 00:26:32.76\00:26:36.48 So the patient goes to the dentist, the dentist says 00:26:36.51\00:26:40.80 "Sorry" I'm not going to be able to save your tooth. 00:26:40.83\00:26:44.07 That's one of the commonest causes of tooth loss in those 00:26:44.10\00:26:49.20 in those who are over the age of 35. 00:26:49.23\00:26:51.11 How do you keep from getting pyorrhea? 00:26:51.14\00:26:53.99 One of the ways is not to eat a lot of sugar, 00:26:54.02\00:26:57.34 Sugar encourages infection around the gums, 00:26:57.37\00:27:01.84 around the teeth and the gums and up into the tooth socket 00:27:01.87\00:27:07.14 which then encourages osteoporosis. 00:27:07.17\00:27:10.88 With thyroid supplements, for some reason they cause the 00:27:10.91\00:27:16.72 bones to become soft, so thyroid supplements, 00:27:16.75\00:27:21.03 especially if they are not needed, but are just given 00:27:21.06\00:27:24.42 because of some symptom that is unpleasant, 00:27:24.45\00:27:26.92 like being cold in the morning, or not having good energy. 00:27:26.95\00:27:31.70 Those things may not mean that you need thyroid supplements 00:27:31.73\00:27:35.60 at all, and then having celiac disease. 00:27:35.63\00:27:38.83 That also can encourage the getting of osteoporosis. 00:27:38.86\00:27:43.76 So armed with this knowledge you may be able to help 00:27:43.79\00:27:47.90 yourself not to get osteoporosis with it's humped back, 00:27:47.93\00:27:50.61 and it's painful bones here and there, and loss of tooth. 00:27:50.64\00:27:51.61
