We live in a very mobile society 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.32 and sometimes changing time zones many thousands of miles 00:00:04.35\00:00:08.30 leaves us in very much less than optimum health. 00:00:08.33\00:00:12.45 If you've had this problem you might like 00:00:12.48\00:00:14.62 to hear some of the tips that we are going to give 00:00:14.65\00:00:16.75 on how to deal with traveling from place to place. 00:00:16.78\00:00:20.62 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:38.68\00:00:43.18 Of Uchee Pines Institute and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:43.21\00:00:48.14 Of course everybody knows that well in advance of the travel 00:00:48.17\00:00:53.11 one should be well packed and everything to be relaxed, 00:00:53.14\00:00:57.58 but as it happens a lot of the time, we don't have really 00:00:57.61\00:01:01.24 a lot of time before the traveling is to be done 00:01:01.27\00:01:04.08 to do the packing. 00:01:04.11\00:01:05.47 So packing sometimes results in just things thrown together, 00:01:05.50\00:01:11.00 but if there is any possible way, you should spend some time 00:01:11.03\00:01:14.18 and use some care in your packing. 00:01:14.21\00:01:16.57 Pack the kind of clothing that will be specific for the area 00:01:16.60\00:01:21.57 where you are going, not necessarily where 00:01:21.60\00:01:24.35 you are leaving from. 00:01:24.38\00:01:25.35 You leave in that kind of clothing, but lets say you leave 00:01:25.36\00:01:29.01 in hot weather, but where you are going, 00:01:29.04\00:01:30.73 it's immediately cold weather. 00:01:30.76\00:01:32.04 When you get off the plane you are going to be in icy cold 00:01:32.07\00:01:35.81 weather, so you must take something in your carry on 00:01:35.84\00:01:38.89 to use at the time you are in an airport in a foreign country 00:01:38.92\00:01:44.94 or in a distant place, if it is cold there. 00:01:44.97\00:01:48.72 Always expect that where you are going, 00:01:48.75\00:01:50.75 the weather is going to be more severe 00:01:50.78\00:01:52.37 than where you just left. 00:01:52.40\00:01:54.33 If it is hot, you plan things that are more light weight, 00:01:54.36\00:01:58.29 much more light weight. 00:01:58.32\00:02:00.19 If it is cold things that are much more heavy weight, 00:02:00.22\00:02:03.43 so that you won't be cold or you won't be hot. 00:02:03.46\00:02:06.00 It's just as important to stay cool, as it is to stay warm. 00:02:06.03\00:02:09.71 When we go to another place and we are very upset because 00:02:09.74\00:02:15.93 of extreme heat, this can be just as upsetting to the 00:02:15.96\00:02:20.37 way you feel, as being shivering and trembling because 00:02:20.40\00:02:24.49 it's very cold where you are. 00:02:24.52\00:02:26.71 When you are on the plane you need to be careful not to 00:02:26.74\00:02:31.54 have tight clothing. 00:02:31.57\00:02:32.68 Tight clothing can become very uncomfortable, 00:02:32.71\00:02:36.46 particularly if you have some distention of the abdomen 00:02:36.49\00:02:40.55 during the flight, so first thing is to make certain that 00:02:40.58\00:02:44.66 your clothes are loose when you are traveling. 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.57 Be sure that they cover the legs well. 00:02:46.60\00:02:49.77 Women should have wide skirts so that they cover the legs well 00:02:49.80\00:02:54.17 and give plenty of freedom in the travel, 00:02:54.20\00:02:57.86 without being in other people's way, or hanging up on something. 00:02:57.89\00:03:03.13 That can be very helpful for you with your clothing. 00:03:03.16\00:03:07.12 In planning the kind of clothing that you take, 00:03:07.15\00:03:11.19 always take something light and helpful to wear on the plane 00:03:11.22\00:03:16.79 without over-burdening yourself, or freezing your arms, 00:03:16.82\00:03:22.02 so take a little sweater, or take some slippers, 00:03:22.05\00:03:25.23 so that as soon as you get on the plane, 00:03:25.26\00:03:27.56 you can remove your shoes and relax, and be comfortable 00:03:27.59\00:03:31.01 in slippers that you can slip into. 00:03:31.04\00:03:36.90 Some airlines actually furnish these things for people so that 00:03:36.93\00:03:41.15 they don't have to bring those things with them. 00:03:41.18\00:03:44.29 For warmth, not only something that you can put on your arms, 00:03:44.32\00:03:51.52 but also something that you can wrap around if necessary, 00:03:51.55\00:03:56.51 and that may be a jacket, or that may be a blanket. 00:03:56.54\00:04:00.54 Blankets are usually furnished by airlines and you can get them 00:04:00.57\00:04:04.26 quite easily. 00:04:04.29\00:04:05.37 Sometimes you may want to pack actually a travel bag. 00:04:05.40\00:04:10.50 A travel bag can furnish those things for you 00:04:10.53\00:04:14.98 while you are on the trip, as well as things that you get 00:04:15.01\00:04:18.51 when you are immediately after you get there. 00:04:18.54\00:04:21.22 Dr. Don Miller has done quite a lot of world traveling, 00:04:21.25\00:04:24.13 and he can tell you something about the way he packs a 00:04:24.16\00:04:28.23 travel bag, Dr. Miller. 00:04:28.26\00:04:29.58 Well it sounds like you are familiar with traveling too. 00:04:29.61\00:04:31.74 A little bit. 00:04:31.77\00:04:33.03 You know sometimes when you leave Alabama, 00:04:33.06\00:04:34.93 where its almost always hot, without thinking about where you 00:04:34.96\00:04:38.60 are going it's not going to be that way, 00:04:38.63\00:04:40.40 and I for some reason do this all the time. 00:04:40.43\00:04:43.39 I pack for Alabama, and I end up in Siberia, 00:04:43.42\00:04:46.94 and I think why did I do this, no sweaters, no sweatshirts, 00:04:46.97\00:04:51.27 no warm clothes, no long johns, 00:04:51.30\00:04:52.92 it gets to be pretty uncomfortable. 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.06 One of the first things that you need to do, 00:04:55.09\00:04:57.15 is you should make yourself a packing list, that you have 00:04:57.18\00:05:01.90 all the time, I've got one on my computer. 00:05:01.93\00:05:03.92 It tells me don't forget! as a matter of fact, 00:05:03.95\00:05:06.57 when I get ready to go on a trip, after I've packed 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.30 even if I've gone over the list, I sit there and say ok, my head, 00:05:09.33\00:05:12.05 do I have any hats, ties, shirts, jackets, belts, trousers 00:05:12.08\00:05:16.72 socks, shoes, those are important things. 00:05:16.75\00:05:19.00 So have a list to pack by. 00:05:19.03\00:05:20.88 But this travel kit is very, very, very important. 00:05:20.91\00:05:23.84 Things that you have with you when you are in the middle 00:05:23.87\00:05:27.07 of the travel experience, now it depends on 00:05:27.10\00:05:30.01 what you are traveling on. 00:05:30.04\00:05:31.01 When I go to Eastern Europe, I do a lot of traveling on a 00:05:31.02\00:05:34.53 train, and there are certain thing that you really want to 00:05:34.56\00:05:36.43 have when you are on that train. 00:05:36.46\00:05:38.06 I like to carry with me some of these little clean wipes 00:05:38.09\00:05:40.68 that you can wipe your hands with, you can wipe the toilets 00:05:40.71\00:05:44.08 with, you wipe door knobs with. 00:05:44.11\00:05:45.72 I use these a lot, and I buy them in these little individual 00:05:45.75\00:05:49.44 dispensers, I used to carry a big tube of them but, 00:05:49.47\00:05:52.93 I found that the tube, when you get them in the luggage, 00:05:52.96\00:05:54.95 if it gets pushed, it pops open and dries out, 00:05:54.98\00:05:59.15 and also leaks out when it's still wet on your clothes, 00:05:59.18\00:06:02.15 so I buy a lot of these. 00:06:02.18\00:06:03.55 I also carry with me, in my luggage, this is going back to 00:06:03.58\00:06:06.86 the luggage, not so much my travel bag. 00:06:06.89\00:06:08.75 I will get a whole box of zip lock bags, 00:06:08.78\00:06:13.67 and I will stuff some of my clothes in there, 00:06:13.70\00:06:16.60 and the rest I will just strew around in my luggage, 00:06:16.63\00:06:20.51 because it's amazing how handy they come in, 00:06:20.54\00:06:22.75 when you are traveling somewhere, 00:06:22.78\00:06:24.55 and they make great gifts, 00:06:24.58\00:06:26.03 A really good zip-lock bag, when you are in a country 00:06:26.06\00:06:28.92 that does not have them is a treasure for the people. 00:06:28.95\00:06:31.65 When I am traveling, I make sure I have some 00:06:31.68\00:06:34.94 really good ear plugs, as a matter of fact, 00:06:34.97\00:06:37.40 I don't just take a pair, I take a box of ear plugs, 00:06:37.43\00:06:40.40 because one of our missions, when we are traveling is to be 00:06:40.43\00:06:44.09 a blessing to other people who are traveling. 00:06:44.12\00:06:46.06 What a blessing to take out of your little box two clean 00:06:46.09\00:06:50.95 earplugs and offer them to your seat mate, or offer them to 00:06:50.98\00:06:54.59 somebody else in the airplane. 00:06:54.62\00:06:55.93 It can be a blessing for them, but I roll them up and poke them 00:06:55.96\00:07:00.04 into my ears, they swell up, and the sound gets very muffled 00:07:00.07\00:07:04.46 people are around doing all their stuff, 00:07:04.49\00:07:06.11 and I can go right through it. 00:07:06.14\00:07:07.72 I also carry with me an eye mask. 00:07:07.75\00:07:10.47 Basically just a mask without the holes like the Lone Ranger 00:07:10.50\00:07:14.32 but you just put them over your head, 00:07:14.35\00:07:15.97 therefore you've now got a dark field, you've got 00:07:16.00\00:07:19.91 your ear plugs in, everything is dark and quiet, 00:07:19.94\00:07:23.75 very nice to sleep. 00:07:23.78\00:07:24.99 I also carry in my carry on baggage, 00:07:25.02\00:07:29.44 a pair of slippers of some sort. 00:07:29.47\00:07:30.44 As soon as I get on the airplane I take off my shoes, I put on 00:07:30.45\00:07:35.06 the slippers, now Dr. Thrash has mentioned that sometimes 00:07:35.09\00:07:37.56 they supply, but what they always supply is little socks, 00:07:37.59\00:07:40.96 and I do not want to walk into that bathroom wearing a pair of 00:07:40.99\00:07:43.50 socks, and so I put on my slippers, 00:07:43.53\00:07:45.45 usually a pair of thongs, something I can wear 00:07:45.48\00:07:47.73 in other places, like if I am going to be showering, 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.97 like shower shoes, rubberized shoes, very nice to travel with, 00:07:51.00\00:07:55.02 so you want to have those with you. 00:07:55.05\00:07:56.52 I carry some business cards, I carry them in a little folder 00:07:56.55\00:08:01.29 where I've got my cards, and on the other side of the business 00:08:01.32\00:08:04.50 cards, I have some encouraging scripture type cards, 00:08:04.53\00:08:07.65 so I can share these with people, and I've got a place 00:08:07.68\00:08:10.85 to put their cards if we start up a conversation, 00:08:10.88\00:08:13.98 and a relationship, they know who I am, I know who they are, 00:08:14.01\00:08:17.60 and we can continue what we started right there. 00:08:17.63\00:08:20.37 But to give somebody a promise, I like to get these really nice! 00:08:20.40\00:08:23.96 You can get them in Bible Stores, Religious Book Stores, 00:08:23.99\00:08:27.87 little cards with a very nice picture on. 00:08:27.90\00:08:31.61 One that I like very much is a picture of Jesus holding a man, 00:08:31.64\00:08:34.88 and the man is sort of slumped, in one hand he has a mallet 00:08:34.91\00:08:38.37 and the other hand he has a spike, and Jesus is holding him 00:08:38.40\00:08:42.36 and the man is weeping, and if you give that to somebody, 00:08:42.39\00:08:45.44 even if they can't read it, it's in English, and they are in 00:08:45.47\00:08:48.51 Russia, it can be a blessing to them, and so I recommend 00:08:48.54\00:08:51.44 you carry some of those with you too. 00:08:51.47\00:08:53.07 I also carry with me, some little, these are Shout wipes 00:08:53.10\00:08:56.72 there are other types of wipes, that if you get a stain on your 00:08:56.75\00:08:59.09 clothing, right away you can treat that stain, 00:08:59.12\00:09:01.72 rather than go through the entire trip, 00:09:01.75\00:09:04.19 because when we travel, we've got a limited amount of clothing 00:09:04.22\00:09:07.17 this way you can treat it right away, and keep from ruining 00:09:07.20\00:09:10.78 your trip because you've got not enough clothes. 00:09:10.81\00:09:13.01 I also carry with me, bottled water. 00:09:13.04\00:09:16.31 Make sure that when you carry the bottled water, 00:09:16.34\00:09:19.30 you buy it at the store, and the seal has not been broken. 00:09:19.33\00:09:23.32 If you have taken your bottle like I like to do, 00:09:23.35\00:09:25.80 at Uchee Pines we got fantastic water... 00:09:25.83\00:09:29.79 fill it up, put the lid on... 00:09:29.82\00:09:31.38 You get to the airport, they don't know what is in that 00:09:31.41\00:09:34.66 bottle, they will have you drink half of it 00:09:34.69\00:09:36.34 or just discard the whole thing. 00:09:36.37\00:09:37.94 So make sure that you've got the completely sealed bottles, 00:09:37.97\00:09:42.55 so they will look at that and see that the seal 00:09:42.58\00:09:44.30 has not been broken, and I will take three or four. 00:09:44.33\00:09:46.64 It's not just for the trip, you want to stay well hydrated 00:09:46.67\00:09:50.24 on your trip. 00:09:50.27\00:09:51.58 You can get water from the airplane, but if you want 00:09:51.61\00:09:54.36 some extra, I take mine, but you also want water 00:09:54.39\00:09:58.09 for when you arrive to where you are going. 00:09:58.12\00:10:00.27 Let's say I want to set it up in Zahirabad, India 00:10:00.30\00:10:03.82 there's no place around there to buy water, where I was 00:10:03.86\00:10:06.67 but I had a couple bottles of my own. 00:10:06.70\00:10:08.87 Now! When we are talking about water, 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.15 be careful of what water you buy. 00:10:11.18\00:10:13.37 I was leaving Austria one time to go up to Germany 00:10:13.40\00:10:17.07 and was flying back from Germany, and I had a very large, 00:10:17.10\00:10:20.44 I think it was a two liter bottle of this very nice, 00:10:20.47\00:10:24.48 mineral water, which was, they called it gassed water 00:10:24.51\00:10:28.28 or fizzy water, or carbonated water. 00:10:28.31\00:10:30.86 I had this in the airplane, it was rolling around 00:10:30.89\00:10:34.05 at my feet for awhile, we landed in Amsterdam. 00:10:34.08\00:10:37.06 We take off from Amsterdam, about 20,000 feet I started 00:10:37.09\00:10:40.90 to feel a little bit thirsty so I bring up this great big 00:10:40.93\00:10:43.01 bottle of fizzy water, sit it between my legs, 00:10:43.04\00:10:46.26 and I break the seal, now you might know what happened 00:10:46.29\00:10:49.77 at that point, I got a complete shower all in my lap, 00:10:49.80\00:10:53.93 so make sure you don't carry fizzy water on the plane. 00:10:53.96\00:10:56.76 You want straight water, it will be a whole lot more convenient 00:10:56.79\00:11:00.54 for you when you up about 20,000 feet, 00:11:00.57\00:11:02.53 with all the pressures, and all the shaking of the thing. 00:11:02.56\00:11:05.44 I also carry with me in my carry on bag, 00:11:05.47\00:11:08.17 is a change of clothing. 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.47 It's not just for my computer, and my camera, 00:11:09.50\00:11:11.91 and things like this, because if my luggage ends up missing 00:11:11.94\00:11:15.27 somewhere, I want to enough clothing with me to get me 00:11:15.30\00:11:19.18 through the night, so I have my pajamas in there, 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.05 I have a full change of clothing, 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.41 I've got my most important things in my carry on bags. 00:11:23.44\00:11:27.59 I get it in my mind, ok, my goal is that everything is 00:11:27.62\00:11:32.54 going to arrive, my expectation is that all is 00:11:32.60\00:11:34.83 going to arrive is me and my carry on, 00:11:34.86\00:11:36.37 that way I've got what I need when I get there. 00:11:36.41\00:11:39.54 I also carry some literature for people. 00:11:39.57\00:11:42.39 Literature about any spiritual subject, that you can share 00:11:42.42\00:11:46.12 with them, as you are going through your experience. 00:11:46.15\00:11:49.14 I also carry some type of snacking foods. 00:11:49.17\00:11:51.84 Sometimes in the airlines, either you are not fed, 00:11:51.87\00:11:54.33 or you are fed..., you put I for your vegan meal 00:11:54.36\00:11:57.41 and they come by and say like this. 00:11:57.44\00:11:59.45 Do you want pork or fish? 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.45 I say well I asked for a vegan meal, 00:12:01.48\00:12:04.71 and so you are not down for a vegan meal. 00:12:04.74\00:12:06.76 So it's nice for you to open up your carry on, 00:12:06.87\00:12:09.86 your little travel kit, and pull out some Granola, 00:12:09.89\00:12:12.55 or some travel mix, or some nice things. 00:12:12.58\00:12:15.27 You don't want to eat heavy in an airplane, 00:12:15.30\00:12:17.02 You want to eat very light, 00:12:17.05\00:12:18.11 but you might want to eat something. 00:12:18.14\00:12:20.01 I also carry some melatonin, with me, which I will talk about 00:12:20.04\00:12:23.12 in a few minutes, but it's nice to have melatonin. 00:12:23.15\00:12:25.26 If you are flying east especially, 00:12:25.29\00:12:27.91 when I'm flying east, which means you are going 00:12:27.95\00:12:29.97 into the sun, which is usually you are flying at night time 00:12:30.00\00:12:32.99 across the Atlantic Ocean. 00:12:33.02\00:12:34.16 I get on the airplane, I get settled in about two hours later 00:12:34.19\00:12:37.53 I take a melatonin, trying to sleep for that extremely short 00:12:37.56\00:12:41.56 night, because you have a long day ahead of you 00:12:41.59\00:12:43.51 once you get there. 00:12:43.54\00:12:45.21 I also carry with me, and this is sort of a strange things to 00:12:45.24\00:12:49.43 carry, I carry a harmonica. 00:12:49.46\00:12:51.63 It's amazing sometimes when you get into a flight, 00:12:51.66\00:12:54.42 and you got some fussy child sitting right next to you 00:12:54.45\00:12:57.41 and they just can't be still, you start playing a harmonica 00:12:57.44\00:13:01.19 they get completely quiet and watch what you are doing. 00:13:01.22\00:13:04.54 I think people like to hear some sounds, you may not 00:13:04.57\00:13:07.89 be able to play the harmonica, but if I can play the harmonica, 00:13:07.92\00:13:10.63 you can play the harmonica. 00:13:10.66\00:13:12.16 Just get one and start blowing and drawing, and pretty soon 00:13:12.19\00:13:15.30 you're going to find that you can play that thing quite well. 00:13:15.33\00:13:18.64 There are some of the simple things, 00:13:18.67\00:13:20.60 one other thing I want to mention. 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.04 If you travel a lot to the same country, I travel a lot 00:13:22.07\00:13:25.87 to the country of Ukraine. 00:13:25.90\00:13:27.06 What I've done this last time I went there, when I was going 00:13:27.09\00:13:30.62 through customs, I got a few sheets of their 00:13:30.65\00:13:34.01 custom declaration forms, so now I have them at my home. 00:13:34.05\00:13:37.54 I'm leaving for Ukraine again soon, I can take out that form 00:13:37.57\00:13:41.44 have it completely itemized before I even leave my house 00:13:41.47\00:13:45.34 to get to Kiev, instead of waiting in these long lines 00:13:45.37\00:13:49.39 while everyone is filling their things out, 00:13:49.42\00:13:50.75 I go straight up to the counter give them my customs declaration 00:13:50.78\00:13:54.22 show them my passport, with my visa's and breeze on through. 00:13:54.25\00:13:57.88 One other thing, when you are packing your suitcase, 00:13:57.91\00:13:59.93 keep and itemized list of everything you are packing. 00:13:59.96\00:14:02.53 Especially things that you might want to declare, 00:14:02.56\00:14:06.43 or someone might wonder where you got that. 00:14:06.46\00:14:09.29 You don't have to list all your pairs of socks, and how many 00:14:09.32\00:14:12.07 shirts, but anything that is electronic, anything that is 00:14:12.10\00:14:15.96 hardware, you want to list this on a sheet of paper, 00:14:15.99\00:14:19.26 because the next time you go across another border, 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.78 you want an itemized list of what you have with you, 00:14:21.81\00:14:25.87 because it will make things a whole lot more pleasant. 00:14:25.90\00:14:28.54 Traveling is a great experience, when you are out there traveling 00:14:28.57\00:14:32.51 remember that your are representing not America, 00:14:32.54\00:14:35.40 you are representing Jesus Christ. 00:14:35.43\00:14:37.64 And Dr. Thrash, I think that's exactly what God wants us to do, 00:14:37.67\00:14:40.78 to be good representatives of Him. 00:14:40.81\00:14:42.78 Yes travel is for some people a great blessing, a great joy 00:14:42.81\00:14:47.87 and a nice time, but for others like myself, 00:14:47.90\00:14:51.93 it's not the very nicest. 00:14:51.96\00:14:54.15 I always travel with a good bit of discomfort, and wish I 00:14:54.18\00:14:59.85 could do what I need to do over there, at my home. 00:14:59.88\00:15:04.55 One of the things that can make travel a lot easier for you, 00:15:04.58\00:15:08.65 is that of the food that you eat. 00:15:08.68\00:15:11.54 For about a week before you go into a trip, 00:15:11.57\00:15:14.52 especially if you are the kind of person that gets motion sick, 00:15:14.55\00:15:17.50 make your food very light. 00:15:17.53\00:15:19.89 Especially don't eat very heavy fats, 00:15:19.92\00:15:22.80 you may eat a few nuts, but don't eat a lot of nuts, 00:15:22.83\00:15:27.84 because they can be pretty heavy foods. 00:15:27.87\00:15:31.10 All kinds of free fats margarine, mayonnaise, 00:15:31.13\00:15:34.23 fried foods, cooking fats, salad oils, all of these 00:15:34.26\00:15:38.26 are very heavy foods, they tend to make it so that you are 00:15:38.29\00:15:41.65 more likely to get sick at the stomach, 00:15:41.68\00:15:43.86 if you have the tendency to be motion sick. 00:15:43.89\00:15:46.52 In addition to that, on the day of the flight, 00:15:46.55\00:15:50.62 try to figure out when the next meal will be for you. 00:15:50.65\00:15:57.44 You simply figure how many hours it is going to take you to go 00:15:57.48\00:16:02.05 the next place, and then you decide if they will be eating 00:16:02.08\00:16:06.78 at X hour, which for me is Y hour, so it's wise if you take 00:16:06.81\00:16:13.31 that meal at Y hour, instead of at your regular meal time. 00:16:13.34\00:16:19.32 Then your next meal, unless it's in the night on the plane, 00:16:19.35\00:16:24.64 then you eat that also at the next scheduled time for them, 00:16:24.67\00:16:29.27 where you are going. 00:16:29.30\00:16:30.35 If night catches you, and you are on the plane 00:16:30.38\00:16:33.52 during the night, they're going to offer you some foods, 00:16:33.55\00:16:36.60 sometime during the night. 00:16:36.63\00:16:37.91 Refuse that food, you will do far better if you do. 00:16:37.94\00:16:41.94 Your jet lag will be a lot less severe, you will have a lot less 00:16:41.97\00:16:46.65 gastrointestinal distress if you simply say no to that food. 00:16:46.68\00:16:50.87 Then with the meals that you eat on the plane, 00:16:50.90\00:16:57.72 before and after, if you will very carefully regulate this 00:16:57.75\00:17:02.13 you will suffer much less from jet lag. 00:17:02.16\00:17:04.21 Now Dr. Miller will tell you another aspect that's 00:17:04.24\00:17:08.93 very important about traveling, Dr. Miller. 00:17:08.96\00:17:11.80 - You know another thing that she reminded me of, 00:17:11.83\00:17:14.03 while she was talking, is when I travel at night, 00:17:14.06\00:17:16.83 she says when they offer you the meal, refuse it. 00:17:16.86\00:17:19.31 Often, they are going to wake you up to offer you the meal. 00:17:19.34\00:17:23.59 I like to carry with me a Do Not Disturb sign, 00:17:23.62\00:17:27.10 and I hang it right around my neck, 00:17:27.13\00:17:29.11 It's right on my chest, so I'm sitting there asleep, 00:17:29.14\00:17:31.53 it's on top of the blanket, Do Not Disturb, 00:17:31.56\00:17:34.16 and they will not disturb you, 00:17:34.19\00:17:36.24 I think thats is a really good suggestion. 00:17:36.27\00:17:39.41 Dr. Thrash has mentioned a term called "jet lag. " 00:17:39.44\00:17:42.89 It's a problem that we go through, it doesn't have to be 00:17:42.92\00:17:47.30 jet lag, it could be changing to daylight savings time lag. 00:17:47.33\00:17:50.57 Just changing one hour has a profound effect upon our 00:17:50.60\00:17:54.53 circadian rhythms upon our whole body, 00:17:54.56\00:17:56.67 and basically jet lag is a violation of our 00:17:56.70\00:17:59.87 circadian rhythm, it's an assault against our system, 00:17:59.90\00:18:02.62 and we've got to learn how to recover from it. 00:18:02.65\00:18:05.15 The first thing that I would recommend, 00:18:05.18\00:18:06.59 if you are going to do international travel, 00:18:06.62\00:18:09.48 especially flying east, which I've already mentioned, 00:18:09.51\00:18:13.22 it's the hardest way, try to arrive early. 00:18:13.25\00:18:16.42 I don't mean two hours early, I mean a few days early, 00:18:16.45\00:18:19.58 because, it will take you a few days... 00:18:19.61\00:18:21.97 It takes about a week to get over the critical effects 00:18:22.00\00:18:26.21 of jet lag, and a month to get over the entire residuals, 00:18:26.24\00:18:29.91 of the jet lag, and so you want to arrive a few days earlier 00:18:29.94\00:18:33.53 that you can sit there and relax, and 00:18:33.56\00:18:35.82 not have to have your mind very sharp. 00:18:35.85\00:18:37.17 Not long ago, I flew to Japan, from Cincinnati 00:18:37.20\00:18:41.00 to Atlanta, to Tokyo, that was a long trip. 00:18:41.03\00:18:45.47 I got picked up in Tokyo, and was taken, and within two hours 00:18:45.50\00:18:49.51 of arriving at my hotel, I was standing in front of a group 00:18:49.54\00:18:53.02 of people speaking, I was really in bad shape. 00:18:53.05\00:18:57.39 The Lord give grace in these times, and I was able to think 00:18:57.42\00:19:00.53 clearly, and speak clearly, but after the meeting was over, 00:19:00.56\00:19:04.70 I was totally exhausted, and I don't really want to do that 00:19:04.73\00:19:08.77 type of a program again, although I will have gotten 00:19:08.80\00:19:11.12 calls upon me to do it exactly that way. 00:19:11.15\00:19:13.43 But what can you do about jet lag when you arrive at your 00:19:13.46\00:19:16.69 destination you want to get outside in the sunshine, 00:19:16.72\00:19:20.15 and get some exercise. 00:19:20.18\00:19:21.71 I will say if you are flying west, coming back from Europe 00:19:21.74\00:19:25.27 to America, you usually arrive in the mid-afternoon, 00:19:25.30\00:19:29.15 it will take you awhile to get to your home, 00:19:29.18\00:19:31.02 what I usually try to do, is do a few things and go to bed 00:19:31.05\00:19:34.80 at a normal time, like 8:00, 8:30, or 9:00, and get myself 00:19:34.83\00:19:39.00 back on to my schedule, it's very much easier to get on to 00:19:39.03\00:19:42.42 your schedule going west, than it is east. 00:19:42.45\00:19:44.72 Going East you have a very short night, and an extremely 00:19:44.75\00:19:47.77 long day, because you are always flying at night time 00:19:47.80\00:19:50.31 going over west. 00:19:50.34\00:19:51.50 So, get some sunshine, get some exercise, 00:19:51.53\00:19:54.13 resist the temptation to take a sleeping aid, 00:19:54.16\00:19:57.28 anywhere along here. 00:19:57.31\00:19:58.72 The melatonin is just fine, it will naturally help you 00:19:58.75\00:20:01.94 get some rest. 00:20:01.97\00:20:03.09 I like to take that myself, but no sleeping aids 00:20:03.12\00:20:05.50 if you can't sleep, at that night of the flight, 00:20:05.53\00:20:08.68 or the next night, let your body naturally take over 00:20:08.71\00:20:11.71 stay away from alcohol, stay away from caffeine, 00:20:11.74\00:20:14.35 stay away from nicotine, all these things are extremely bad 00:20:14.38\00:20:18.08 for jet lag situations, you don't want those things. 00:20:18.11\00:20:21.47 You want to, as we've already mentioned twice, 00:20:21.50\00:20:23.86 keep yourself well hydrated, especially a few days before 00:20:23.89\00:20:28.11 going on your trip. 00:20:28.14\00:20:29.68 Before you go on the trip you want to be well hydrated, 00:20:29.71\00:20:32.07 you want to be well rested. 00:20:32.10\00:20:34.24 If you are like me, you are packing the night before 00:20:34.27\00:20:38.56 you leave, in the morning you are leaving, 00:20:38.59\00:20:40.15 you are throwing the stuff in the suitcase, and you are 00:20:40.18\00:20:42.13 getting all stressed out. 00:20:42.16\00:20:43.17 If you could pack a week ahead of time, or at least 3 or 4 days 00:20:43.20\00:20:47.54 ahead of time, and those last few days are restful, 00:20:47.57\00:20:51.13 getting ready to go days, that's the best way to do it. 00:20:51.16\00:20:54.49 That way you don't have all the stress along with your travel. 00:20:54.52\00:20:57.19 Eat light, don't take the light meal, arrive early, exercise, 00:20:57.22\00:21:04.80 simple, simple things, and I find that when I follow these 00:21:04.83\00:21:07.95 myself, I don't have the major problems with jet lag, although 00:21:07.98\00:21:11.82 I'm still going to meet it, because I violated my own body's 00:21:11.85\00:21:15.22 constitution, but it can be very kind to us, if we do it with 00:21:15.25\00:21:20.07 some moderation, and do it with these simple things in mind. 00:21:20.10\00:21:23.01 Dr. Thrash, does it work for you? 00:21:23.04\00:21:25.53 Oh yes, those things work for me, 00:21:25.56\00:21:27.25 but I still don't enjoy the traveling over many miles 00:21:27.28\00:21:32.21 and a lot of time zones. 00:21:32.24\00:21:34.36 One of the things that you can always benefit from, 00:21:34.39\00:21:38.61 is an understanding of light. 00:21:38.64\00:21:42.32 Light that comes into your eyes, sets your circadian rhythm. 00:21:42.35\00:21:48.77 The circadian rhythm is that biological time clock that's 00:21:48.80\00:21:52.05 built around a day. 00:21:52.08\00:21:53.64 It takes 24 hours for us to complete one cycle. 00:21:53.67\00:21:56.99 The circadian rhythm can be set somewhat by what you do. 00:21:57.02\00:22:03.52 If you have figured out what time it's going to be, 00:22:03.55\00:22:07.29 in the place of your destination then figure back to what time 00:22:07.32\00:22:11.14 that would be where you are now, and so you simply 00:22:11.17\00:22:15.65 advance or retreat in the time to agree with 00:22:15.68\00:22:21.66 where you are going, and then when it gets dark, 00:22:21.69\00:22:24.72 in the place where you are going, 00:22:24.75\00:22:26.10 especially when it gets to be bed time, put on some kind 00:22:26.13\00:22:29.35 of blinder or eye mask as Dr. Miller mentioned, 00:22:29.38\00:22:33.76 that can make it so your eyes are dark, 00:22:33.79\00:22:37.26 even if you can't sleep, you still need to have the darkness. 00:22:37.29\00:22:42.80 Then when you take the mask off, if you can leave it on until 00:22:42.83\00:22:50.65 it's time to be daylight on the other side where you are going, 00:22:50.68\00:22:54.73 then take the mask off at the time 00:22:54.76\00:22:58.14 of daylight, in that country. 00:22:58.17\00:23:00.45 When you get there, you may need a flashlight, because 00:23:00.48\00:23:01.45 it's true, even though you have taken these precautions, 00:23:01.48\00:23:08.97 you've eaten on their schedule, you've darkened your eyes 00:23:09.00\00:23:12.03 on their schedule, even so you may still wake up in the night 00:23:12.06\00:23:16.93 when you should be sleeping, and you are wide awake. 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.96 There's no way you can sleep, 00:23:19.99\00:23:21.70 and you don't want to turn the lights on, 00:23:21.73\00:23:23.46 so you just lie there miserable in bed. 00:23:23.49\00:23:26.31 So if you have a flashlight, 00:23:26.34\00:23:27.88 that could be very helpful to you, 00:23:27.91\00:23:29.51 it makes it so that you don't have to turn all the lights 00:23:29.54\00:23:32.03 on in order to at least just look at your watch, 00:23:32.06\00:23:34.33 or look over some notes, or read a passage in the Bible, 00:23:34.36\00:23:39.00 or whatever may be your desire at the moment. 00:23:39.03\00:23:43.80 With the water, the water is of course for you 00:23:43.83\00:23:47.97 to stay well hydrated. 00:23:48.00\00:23:48.97 One of the reasons for you to stay well hydrated, 00:23:49.00\00:23:51.97 is to avoid travel strokes. 00:23:52.00\00:23:54.11 These are getting to be quite an important cause 00:23:54.14\00:23:57.26 of disability today. 00:23:57.29\00:23:59.05 Travel strokes can be avoided to a large degree, 00:23:59.08\00:24:04.75 if a person will do two things. 00:24:04.78\00:24:06.29 Number one, they drink plenty of water. 00:24:06.32\00:24:09.00 How much is that? 00:24:09.03\00:24:10.17 It's enough to produce around two quarts of urine a day, 00:24:10.20\00:24:15.14 well you have no way to measure, is there another way 00:24:15.17\00:24:20.08 that you can tell? 00:24:20.11\00:24:21.08 Yes, about the color of the urine, that's a good way. 00:24:21.10\00:24:25.46 So if you know that the urine should be pale in color, 00:24:25.49\00:24:28.50 it should not be entirely water colored, but 00:24:28.53\00:24:30.84 it should certainly not be dark, 00:24:30.87\00:24:32.73 then that's about the color that the urine should be, 00:24:32.76\00:24:36.18 and you are well hydrated, if you can achieve that. 00:24:36.21\00:24:39.10 The second thing, is you must move. 00:24:39.13\00:24:42.25 Now move in an airline seat! There you are just crowded into 00:24:42.28\00:24:48.83 it, and a person is here, and a person is there 00:24:48.86\00:24:51.30 how can you move. 00:24:51.33\00:24:52.44 Well there are certain ways, one is you can yawn, 00:24:52.47\00:24:55.41 just take a big, big breath and try your best to yawn, 00:24:55.44\00:24:59.87 and then another thing is you can just raise your hands right 00:24:59.90\00:25:03.12 up over your head. 00:25:03.15\00:25:04.17 That's your space up there, so you raise your hands, 00:25:04.20\00:25:06.63 and you stretch upwards, as much as you can. 00:25:06.66\00:25:09.32 Then if you can't go any farther, you just squeeze, 00:25:09.35\00:25:14.23 squeeze your shoulder muscles, squeeze your arms, 00:25:14.26\00:25:17.30 your hands, then your abdominal muscles, your back muscles, 00:25:17.33\00:25:21.37 then the legs, and the thighs, it's especially important 00:25:21.40\00:25:25.04 to keep the blood circulating in the legs and the thighs 00:25:25.07\00:25:30.34 to prevent a stroke. 00:25:30.37\00:25:31.98 Clothing of course should not be tight around the waist, 00:25:32.01\00:25:35.93 or tight around any extremity. 00:25:35.96\00:25:37.57 If you eat heavy foods like beans, or nuts, 00:25:37.60\00:25:41.70 or a lot of high fiber foods 00:25:41.73\00:25:44.05 just before you leave for a trip. 00:25:44.08\00:25:47.20 When you are in the air, that gas 00:25:47.23\00:25:49.82 that's in the intestinal track will swell, and that will make 00:25:49.85\00:25:54.06 you all the more uncomfortable. 00:25:54.09\00:25:56.06 If you are traveling with an infant, 00:25:56.09\00:25:58.57 several things to remember about traveling with an infant. 00:25:58.60\00:26:01.96 One is when you go up, and when you come down, 00:26:01.99\00:26:04.90 but especially when you come down. 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.20 If you will provide something for the infant to suck 00:26:06.23\00:26:09.97 during that time, then that can help the infant to be 00:26:10.00\00:26:13.73 much more comfortable, because the sucking action 00:26:13.76\00:26:16.54 will open up the Eustachian tube, and keep the air equalized 00:26:16.57\00:26:21.26 between the middle ear and the external ear outside. 00:26:21.29\00:26:26.80 That can be helpful to the baby. 00:26:26.83\00:26:28.55 Then another thing, remember about the baby, 00:26:28.58\00:26:31.11 that you should not diaper the baby to tightly, 00:26:31.14\00:26:34.24 because a tightly bound baby, when the intestinal tract swells 00:26:34.27\00:26:41.76 a little bit with the increase in the altitude, then the baby 00:26:41.79\00:26:45.93 doesn't have a lot of room to expand, so if they expand 00:26:45.96\00:26:49.12 just a couple of tablespoonfuls worth, it's going to be very 00:26:49.15\00:26:52.98 uncomfortable for the baby. 00:26:53.01\00:26:54.26 So they may be most uncomfortable during the flight. 00:26:54.29\00:26:57.49 Those are some very important things to remember 00:26:57.52\00:27:01.13 for a small baby. 00:27:01.16\00:27:03.06 You can dilute the baby's food on the way up, 00:27:03.09\00:27:07.84 so that the production of gas is minimized, 00:27:07.87\00:27:12.34 and that can help the baby with that. 00:27:12.37\00:27:15.60 There are certain threats to health, and if you remember 00:27:15.63\00:27:20.22 these when you are traveling and adjust to them, 00:27:20.25\00:27:23.87 plan for them, make the provisions, 00:27:23.90\00:27:26.13 whenever they are supposed to come up, 00:27:26.16\00:27:27.85 you will travel much more successfully. 00:27:27.88\00:27:30.87 You will avoid many of the things that injure people 00:27:30.90\00:27:34.53 or even threaten their lives, even such things as allergies, 00:27:34.56\00:27:38.43 which have been in the news a good bit, recently about 00:27:38.46\00:27:44.07 airline foods, so with these tips, we hope the next time 00:27:44.10\00:27:48.50 you are traveling, it will not only be pleasant, 00:27:48.53\00:27:50.84 but also very safe and very comfortable. 00:27:50.87\00:27:51.84
