The nervous system is one of our most complete systems, 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.31 it permeates all of the cells of the body, if you touch here 00:00:05.34\00:00:09.92 there are nerves there, if you touch here there are nerves 00:00:09.95\00:00:12.83 there, and if you touch down on the bottom of your foot 00:00:12.86\00:00:15.64 there are nerves there. 00:00:15.67\00:00:16.83 With all of these nerves, it's quite possible that something 00:00:16.86\00:00:21.26 could go wrong with some of them. 00:00:21.29\00:00:22.66 We will discuss some of these things that go wrong with the 00:00:22.69\00:00:26.85 nervous system in this program, and we hope you will join us 00:00:26.88\00:00:30.14 with our talk on Neurologic Problems. 00:00:30.17\00:00:34.18 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health, with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:53.25\00:00:57.23 O f Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:57.26\00:00:59.51 Now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:59.54\00:01:02.09 It's a wonderful age to live in, in which we are learning 00:01:02.12\00:01:06.97 so many things for so many diseases. 00:01:07.00\00:01:09.57 I just love living in this age because I love understanding 00:01:09.60\00:01:13.81 some new things about what is happening to people, 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.29 especially those with neurologic problems. 00:01:16.32\00:01:18.94 There was a time when we didn't have much that we could do 00:01:18.97\00:01:23.64 for a lot of neurologic problems that now we know more 00:01:23.67\00:01:27.37 about the disease, and we know more about the nervous system 00:01:27.40\00:01:31.12 and how it functions. 00:01:31.15\00:01:32.32 So we can help people who have neurologic problems 00:01:32.35\00:01:36.07 and one that I would like to talk about is 00:01:36.10\00:01:38.29 Multiple Sclerosis. 00:01:38.32\00:01:39.93 It's really a quite common disorder and we have of course 00:01:39.97\00:01:45.99 a little bit more frequently in women, than in men, 00:01:46.02\00:01:48.67 but in all areas of society, all levels of the geography 00:01:48.70\00:01:55.76 end of the socio-economic levels people have Multiple Sclerosis. 00:01:55.79\00:02:01.85 Now we do find however, that in tropical areas 00:02:01.88\00:02:06.36 they have far less than they do in more northerly climbs. 00:02:06.39\00:02:11.54 Why is that? We aren't entirely certain, but one thing may be 00:02:11.57\00:02:15.50 that something happens to the nervous system 00:02:15.53\00:02:18.78 in early childhood, in people who live in tropical countries 00:02:18.81\00:02:23.34 that protects them throughout their life 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.42 from Multiple Sclerosis. 00:02:25.45\00:02:28.42 What that is we don't know, whether its the continual warmth 00:02:28.45\00:02:33.09 or whether its the kind of food, or the way they live, 00:02:33.12\00:02:36.61 or what it is, we are just not certain. 00:02:36.64\00:02:40.02 But if a person from the tropics goes to a place in the very 00:02:40.05\00:02:46.73 northern most parts of the world, they carry with them 00:02:46.76\00:02:50.57 the risk of Multiple Sclerosis that they had in their 00:02:50.60\00:02:55.20 home area, not in the area that they are transplanted to. 00:02:55.23\00:02:59.92 Those who are born in northern climates carry with them to a 00:02:59.95\00:03:05.38 tropical area, the same risks that they would have if they 00:03:05.41\00:03:09.42 still continue to live in the more northern climate. 00:03:09.45\00:03:13.29 Some things about Multiple Sclerosis are quite puzzling 00:03:13.32\00:03:18.12 why it is that some people get a type of Multiple Sclerosis 00:03:18.15\00:03:22.05 that goes to death in just a few weeks, its just a very 00:03:22.08\00:03:27.21 accelerated form of Multiple Sclerosis. 00:03:27.24\00:03:30.68 Why does that happen? No one knows. 00:03:30.71\00:03:33.15 Why is it that some people will get Multiple Sclerosis 00:03:33.18\00:03:36.58 and they have a very slow progress through 00:03:36.61\00:03:41.15 a long life eventually succumbing to the 00:03:41.18\00:03:45.78 Multiple Sclerosis, but only after decades have passed. 00:03:45.81\00:03:48.96 This is puzzling, we don't know exactly why this is. 00:03:48.99\00:03:52.89 There are things that we know to do for the person with 00:03:52.92\00:03:56.79 Multiple Sclerosis to slow down the process, 00:03:56.82\00:03:59.94 and I will mention a few of those, there are many of them, 00:03:59.97\00:04:02.86 so in order to get the full picture, you would need to make 00:04:02.89\00:04:07.49 a study of Multiple Sclerosis, which we have done, 00:04:07.52\00:04:10.21 and have written up at Uchee Pines and by 00:04:10.24\00:04:13.52 simply going on the web to the 3ABN web site and clicking 00:04:13.55\00:04:20.61 on Uchee Pines in the contacts, you can find how to get in touch 00:04:20.64\00:04:26.54 with us to get that written paper on Multiple Sclerosis. 00:04:26.57\00:04:32.30 But some of the things that we have found, are that 00:04:32.33\00:04:36.25 diet is very helpful. 00:04:36.28\00:04:38.55 The kind of diet that one should use is one that has no hard fats 00:04:38.58\00:04:43.66 in it, you can use just the all soft fats that you would like 00:04:43.69\00:04:48.36 and they will furnish the amount of saturated fats that you need 00:04:48.39\00:04:52.16 for your essential fatty acids, without giving you those 00:04:52.19\00:04:58.04 fatty acids that may be harmful to your nervous system. 00:04:58.07\00:05:01.52 Then of course the diet shall be of a nature that 00:05:01.55\00:05:05.22 will make it so you will not gain weight, 00:05:05.25\00:05:07.19 because if the muscles get weak with the disease, the more 00:05:07.22\00:05:11.81 weight they carry, the more difficult it's going to be 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.78 for you to get around. 00:05:14.81\00:05:16.11 So the person with Multiple Sclerosis should 00:05:16.14\00:05:19.27 guard the weight very carefully. 00:05:19.30\00:05:21.16 Now another thing about diet is that it should principally 00:05:21.19\00:05:25.09 vegetarian. 00:05:25.12\00:05:26.49 Vegetarian people do better than people who are not 00:05:26.52\00:05:29.89 vegetarian, who have Multiple Sclerosis. 00:05:29.92\00:05:33.11 Another thing you should know about what we have discovered 00:05:33.14\00:05:37.66 about the cause, is that in Multiple Sclerosis 00:05:37.69\00:05:41.55 people who have chilled extremities 00:05:41.58\00:05:44.40 early in life, maybe this has to do with 00:05:44.43\00:05:46.93 the place that they live, 00:05:46.96\00:05:48.38 this may have to do with multiple Sclerosis. 00:05:48.41\00:05:52.03 There was some research done a number of years ago 00:05:52.06\00:05:55.81 that indicated that sick animals, pets, or livestock 00:05:55.84\00:06:01.81 that the child may have been exposed to, sick livestock. 00:06:01.84\00:06:06.10 That there was some thought that that might be involved 00:06:06.13\00:06:10.40 in the persons background. 00:06:10.43\00:06:13.38 Certainly for any household with children in it, they should 00:06:13.41\00:06:18.45 not have pets, in the same household. 00:06:18.48\00:06:20.90 The pets should live somewhere else, 00:06:20.93\00:06:23.97 and children should be taught that when they have contact 00:06:24.00\00:06:26.82 with the animal, they always wash the hands 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.39 before they touch the face, or the mouth, or any other thing 00:06:29.42\00:06:33.48 that might go into the mouth. 00:06:33.51\00:06:36.24 In addition to Multiple Sclerosis, there is another 00:06:36.27\00:06:40.58 very serious type of neurological problem 00:06:40.61\00:06:43.63 called epilepsy and Dr. Don Miller who is with me today 00:06:43.66\00:06:47.91 will talk with you about epilepsy. 00:06:47.94\00:06:51.21 Dr. Miller. 00:06:51.24\00:06:52.21 Thank you Dr. Thrash. 00:06:52.22\00:06:53.31 I was in Zambia a few years ago, it was the Sabbath 00:06:53.34\00:06:57.25 at lunch time, we were gathered in the cafeteria there 00:06:57.28\00:07:00.92 and it sounded like someone dropped a bowling ball 00:07:00.95\00:07:06.14 or a watermelon, across between the two on the other side 00:07:06.17\00:07:09.18 of the room, I looked, and one of the African young men, 00:07:09.21\00:07:13.13 on the floor writhing around, I went straight over there 00:07:13.16\00:07:16.47 and he was having a seizure, an epileptic seizure. 00:07:16.50\00:07:20.71 So he went through the stages of the seizure, he finally got 00:07:20.74\00:07:24.67 done, he was in the sleep phase afterwards, I went and talked 00:07:24.70\00:07:28.89 with him, I said how long have you had epilepsy? 00:07:28.92\00:07:32.18 He said I've never had a seizure before, I've never had epilepsy. 00:07:32.21\00:07:36.01 So we started doing a little bit of investigation, 00:07:36.04\00:07:39.29 what caused this problem? 00:07:39.32\00:07:41.00 It turned out he was having a bout of Malaria, 00:07:41.03\00:07:44.23 and he was taking a new Malaria medication, 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.92 and one of the side effects was seizures, 00:07:46.95\00:07:51.55 so we could trace it back. 00:07:51.58\00:07:53.45 Whenever a person is having a seizure, try to find out... 00:07:53.48\00:07:57.12 Let's say someone is having a seizure and they have never 00:07:57.15\00:07:59.38 had one before, they may not be epileptic. 00:07:59.41\00:08:02.50 Although it is a seizure of an epileptic nature, 00:08:02.53\00:08:05.80 but find out what might have precipitated this one. 00:08:05.83\00:08:09.40 A very common cause for seizures today is the food additive 00:08:09.43\00:08:15.02 called Aspartame. 00:08:15.05\00:08:16.49 Its been shown to cause seizures in humans and so 00:08:16.52\00:08:20.43 we should make sure we are taking none of these things 00:08:20.46\00:08:23.12 with Aspartame in the ingredients. 00:08:23.15\00:08:25.82 That means most of your diet colas, many of the little 00:08:25.85\00:08:29.64 artificial sweeteners that you 00:08:29.67\00:08:32.73 put in whatever you might be drinking that needs sweetening. 00:08:32.76\00:08:35.21 Stay away from Aspartame! 00:08:35.24\00:08:36.95 Basically an epileptic seizure is a disturbance 00:08:36.98\00:08:41.31 in the transmission of electrical signals in the brain, 00:08:41.34\00:08:45.87 and it can be caused by many different things. 00:08:45.90\00:08:47.95 A head injury, now you may have had a head injury 00:08:47.98\00:08:51.39 ten years ago, and it might be starting to manifest itself now 00:08:51.42\00:08:55.29 in seizures. It does not happen immediately, so look in the past 00:08:55.32\00:08:59.57 Have you injured your head, Have you injured your neck, 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.07 have you injured your spinal cord, all these things can 00:09:02.10\00:09:05.54 precipitate, and lead to epileptic seizures some time 00:09:05.57\00:09:09.38 down the line, so be aware of those things. 00:09:09.41\00:09:11.84 There are some other causes: high fevers. 00:09:11.87\00:09:15.08 Again a high fever some time in the past, 00:09:15.11\00:09:18.28 can set you for seizures in the future. 00:09:18.31\00:09:21.50 Infections: many infections can set a person up the seizures. 00:09:21.53\00:09:26.96 Constipation in the transverse colon. 00:09:26.99\00:09:30.50 Where is the transverse colon? 00:09:30.53\00:09:31.97 Basically your small intestine leads out into the cecum, 00:09:32.00\00:09:36.71 which is down in the area of your appendix. 00:09:36.74\00:09:38.81 As a matter of fact, hanging off your cecum, 00:09:38.84\00:09:41.41 is your little appendix, and then it goes up in the 00:09:41.44\00:09:44.27 ascending colon, and then across just below your diaphragm 00:09:44.30\00:09:48.07 you might almost think a little bit lower is your transverse 00:09:48.10\00:09:52.66 colon, and then it goes down to your descending. 00:09:52.69\00:09:55.17 It is congestion and constipation 00:09:55.20\00:09:57.50 in the transverse colon 00:09:57.54\00:09:59.30 For over 100 years this has been one of the 00:09:59.34\00:10:02.33 supposed causes and probable causes of epileptic seizures, 00:10:02.36\00:10:08.83 and that is normally caused by, and one of the reasons they 00:10:08.86\00:10:13.40 have been talking about... for over 100 years is soft bread. 00:10:13.44\00:10:16.91 These old things, you can take a whole loaf of bread, 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.17 and wad it up in your hand. 00:10:19.20\00:10:21.04 Basically they recommend that a person, that has epilepsy 00:10:21.07\00:10:24.66 stay off of, especially soft bread, maybe all breads, 00:10:24.69\00:10:28.74 and all mushy grains, because they can tend to constipate 00:10:28.77\00:10:33.23 the transverse colon. 00:10:33.26\00:10:34.83 Good thing to stay away from! 00:10:34.86\00:10:36.30 Also the malfunction of the Ileocecal valve. 00:10:36.33\00:10:41.19 You've got this little valve, that just as your 00:10:41.22\00:10:44.77 small intestine goes into the cecum, 00:10:44.80\00:10:47.08 it's called the Ileocecal valve. 00:10:47.11\00:10:48.68 If there's a malfunction there, powerful toxins can back up 00:10:48.71\00:10:52.97 from the colon into the small bowel, and cause some 00:10:53.00\00:10:56.67 toxification of the small bowel, and then there could be some 00:10:56.70\00:11:02.07 leakage into the peritoneal cavity, and it could get into 00:11:02.10\00:11:06.85 the blood stream, and affect the neurological apparatus 00:11:06.88\00:11:10.92 in the brain. 00:11:10.95\00:11:11.93 So this could be another cause, so stay away from... 00:11:11.96\00:11:14.45 You really can't stay away from a malfunctioning Ileocecal 00:11:14.48\00:11:19.49 valve, but you can try to keep yourself from having distention 00:11:19.52\00:11:23.49 in the bowel over to much pressure from constipation 00:11:23.52\00:11:27.58 or straining, things like this. 00:11:27.61\00:11:30.05 Stay away from those things and keep that valve 00:11:30.08\00:11:31.90 in good shape. 00:11:31.94\00:11:32.91 What are some things you can do for epilepsy? 00:11:32.92\00:11:35.56 We're not going to say you can take this herb and its ok. 00:11:35.59\00:11:38.13 If there was a simple cure, we wouldn't have epilepsy today, 00:11:38.16\00:11:42.39 but there are things that we do to help with it. 00:11:42.42\00:11:45.15 #1. The person that has epilepsy needs to be 00:11:45.18\00:11:49.34 on a regular schedule, they have got to be religiously 00:11:49.37\00:11:52.99 regular in their schedule. 00:11:53.02\00:11:54.53 They need to be in the exercising programs. 00:11:54.56\00:11:57.46 We find that people have any type of neurologic problem, 00:11:57.49\00:12:00.46 exercise is extremely beneficial for that particular 00:12:00.50\00:12:03.85 person. 00:12:03.88\00:12:04.85 They need to have a lot of raw vegetables and fruits, 00:12:04.86\00:12:08.27 It is extremely good, their nutrition has to come up far 00:12:08.30\00:12:11.20 higher, than it probably already was. 00:12:11.23\00:12:13.37 So fruits and vegetables, a lot of them raw, 00:12:13.40\00:12:16.18 they should do some B6 supplementation, 00:12:16.21\00:12:18.96 which can also help the nerves in the body. 00:12:18.99\00:12:23.45 Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. 00:12:23.48\00:12:26.17 I like the way that God has made the fruits and vegetables, 00:12:26.20\00:12:28.45 he color codes them. 00:12:28.48\00:12:29.66 So if you have this type of a problem, 00:12:29.69\00:12:32.43 eat the yellow and the orange thing. 00:12:32.46\00:12:34.95 Then do some other supplementation. 00:12:34.99\00:12:38.57 You can do some manganese 25 mg. a day, some magnesium, 00:12:38.60\00:12:43.18 about 1 gram a day, or 1,000 mg. a day can also help, 00:12:43.21\00:12:47.81 and exercise. 00:12:47.84\00:12:49.45 If a person has epilepsy. 00:12:49.48\00:12:52.68 It comes in four stages: 00:12:52.71\00:12:54.64 The first stage you need to be aware of, it's called the "aura" 00:12:54.67\00:12:58.18 Most people who are going have a seizure 00:12:58.21\00:13:02.11 go through this thing and they know 00:13:02.14\00:13:04.43 and anyone who knows what their "aura" is can tell 00:13:04.46\00:13:08.56 this person is getting ready to have a seizure. 00:13:08.59\00:13:10.88 There are a few things that you can do at this point. 00:13:10.91\00:13:13.22 Over 100 years ago John Harvey Kellogg, 00:13:13.25\00:13:16.35 recommended that you get a cold treatment, a cold pail pour 00:13:16.38\00:13:20.02 at this time, can sometimes short circuit 00:13:20.05\00:13:23.42 the epileptic seizure. 00:13:23.45\00:13:24.87 I've heard about people when they get into this "aura" 00:13:24.90\00:13:28.14 if they realize that their "aura" is a little bit 00:13:28.17\00:13:30.32 longer than normal, if their aura normally is a long "aura" 00:13:30.35\00:13:35.86 they should get outside and get in some intense 00:13:35.89\00:13:38.32 physical activity, and sometimes that alone can 00:13:38.35\00:13:41.99 short stop the seizure, and you not have the seizure. 00:13:42.02\00:13:45.27 Doing these simple things getting the body back in shape. 00:13:45.30\00:13:49.06 When we are in a disease situation, we need to no matter 00:13:49.09\00:13:53.34 what the disease is, do everything that we know to do 00:13:53.37\00:13:56.01 right, and sometimes the body itself then will say ok 00:13:56.04\00:13:59.45 we are finally doing things right, and correct 00:13:59.48\00:14:01.67 the situations itself. 00:14:01.70\00:14:03.07 I think that's pretty good advice Dr. Thrash, 00:14:03.10\00:14:05.02 no matter what we might have. 00:14:05.05\00:14:06.36 That sounds very good. 00:14:06.39\00:14:07.54 Parkinson's disease, another form of serious neurologic 00:14:07.57\00:14:13.24 disorder, is fairly common in our society, 00:14:13.27\00:14:17.46 and involves about equally men and women. 00:14:17.49\00:14:22.09 Maybe just a little bit more men than women, and the neurologic 00:14:22.12\00:14:27.05 problems that they have, begin often with a little tremor 00:14:27.08\00:14:30.79 and the tremor may be at first barely discernable, 00:14:30.82\00:14:34.57 but eventually it get to be quite a lot more. 00:14:34.60\00:14:37.82 In addition to the tremor, there is rigidity, and the rigidity 00:14:37.85\00:14:43.13 may be of a very special kind, so that when you pull on the arm 00:14:43.16\00:14:48.54 instead of getting a smooth movement, such as you just saw 00:14:48.57\00:14:54.10 they will do something like this, called cog-wheeling 00:14:54.13\00:14:58.17 they relax spasmodically and so you get this cog-wheeling 00:14:58.20\00:15:04.86 effect that comes on with the Parkinson's disease. 00:15:04.89\00:15:09.22 The tremor, the stiffness, or rigidity, those are two very 00:15:09.25\00:15:15.09 important symptoms, and almost always have them. 00:15:15.12\00:15:18.03 The tremor may also be what is called the pill rollers 00:15:18.06\00:15:21.74 type of tremor, where the person has a little bit of 00:15:21.77\00:15:25.81 rigidity involving the major part of the hand, 00:15:25.84\00:15:30.17 but the finger do this little pill rolling thing, 00:15:30.20\00:15:32.78 that the pharmacists used to do when they made their pills. 00:15:32.81\00:15:37.04 Some other things that are very important in Parkinson's, 00:15:37.07\00:15:42.23 in making the disease, is the fact that Parkinson's people 00:15:42.26\00:15:47.81 will have a slowness in speaking, a slowness in uptake, 00:15:47.84\00:15:55.75 a slowness in walking, they tend to get into an activity 00:15:55.78\00:16:00.46 rather slowly. 00:16:00.49\00:16:01.65 Those are the major symptoms, there are a bunch of minor ones 00:16:01.68\00:16:05.99 as well, and I will just mention a few of these: 00:16:06.02\00:16:08.92 They may have a problem with a masked face, 00:16:08.95\00:16:13.59 balance can be a pretty major problem, lack of balance, 00:16:13.62\00:16:19.74 or loss of the ability to stand upright. 00:16:19.77\00:16:23.81 Then writing, with very small letters, they often do that. 00:16:23.84\00:16:29.09 They may get a greasy face, that tends to go 00:16:29.12\00:16:33.30 along with Parkinson's as well. 00:16:33.33\00:16:34.76 They may have difficulty in speaking, they may get a low 00:16:34.79\00:16:38.03 voice, in fact sometimes this may cause 00:16:38.06\00:16:41.17 a little marital distress. 00:16:41.20\00:16:43.54 Before the wife understands what is going on 00:16:43.57\00:16:45.88 with her husband, he begins to talk in this low rather slow 00:16:45.91\00:16:51.57 voice, and she may think that he is being hostile toward her. 00:16:51.60\00:16:56.10 When actually he is just having a phase of his disease. 00:16:56.13\00:17:00.23 Sometimes a year or more will go by from the onset of fairly 00:17:00.26\00:17:06.30 marked symptoms before the diagnosis is made. 00:17:06.33\00:17:09.01 Families will often make excuses for their family member, 00:17:09.04\00:17:12.96 and try to cover these up in front of other people. 00:17:12.99\00:17:16.06 The emotional liability, that they have, crying at the drop 00:17:16.09\00:17:21.29 of a hat, if they see somebody that they haven't see for a long 00:17:21.32\00:17:24.79 time, even though they may just be acquaintances, 00:17:24.82\00:17:27.63 they may have an emotional response 00:17:27.66\00:17:31.54 of bringing forth tears. 00:17:31.58\00:17:33.34 Tears that may require a little while to get under control. 00:17:33.37\00:17:38.09 They have also difficulty in swallowing, they may have that, 00:17:38.12\00:17:45.75 this is one of the minor symptoms as well, and a number 00:17:45.78\00:17:49.12 of other minor symptoms that can come with 00:17:49.15\00:17:52.26 Parkinson's disease. 00:17:52.29\00:17:54.70 Once the diagnosis is made, then there are several things that 00:17:54.73\00:17:58.68 the person can do to slow down the disease, 00:17:58.71\00:18:01.26 one is never over eat, has been associated with the development 00:18:01.29\00:18:07.56 of Parkinson's, that of over eating, 00:18:07.59\00:18:10.08 it's just overeating of all food. 00:18:10.11\00:18:11.97 Even people who are eating basically a very good diet, 00:18:12.00\00:18:16.21 can because of the mere fact that they over eat, they get 00:18:16.24\00:18:20.69 symptoms of Parkinson's, and many people, especially if they 00:18:20.72\00:18:24.62 get past the age of 60, when they over eat a single meal, 00:18:24.65\00:18:28.58 they will find that an ordinary steady hand, 00:18:28.61\00:18:31.83 becomes a little unsteady and tremulous. 00:18:31.86\00:18:34.50 Another thing is that the person should move. 00:18:34.53\00:18:38.69 We see also that in individuals with Parkinson's, often they 00:18:38.72\00:18:44.01 are not exercisers, but with the stiffness that comes with 00:18:44.04\00:18:48.04 Parkinson's disease. 00:18:48.07\00:18:49.08 If they keep the muscles moving, 00:18:49.11\00:18:51.27 just as a moving stream will not freeze, so the moving 00:18:51.30\00:18:56.88 muscle will not get stiff, so they should make a very definite 00:18:56.91\00:19:01.78 effort to stay moving, and any kind of exercise 00:19:01.81\00:19:05.16 that they can do will be helpful. 00:19:05.19\00:19:07.95 Fava beans and velvet beans are also very helpful, 00:19:07.98\00:19:13.99 they have L-Dopa in them, the very best source of L-Dopa, 00:19:14.02\00:19:17.98 in the vegetable kingdom is from fava beans, these are big 00:19:18.01\00:19:23.78 broad beans, you can buy these at a health food store, 00:19:23.81\00:19:28.23 and if you can find those that are sproutable, 00:19:28.26\00:19:31.22 you can increase the quantity of L-Dopa by about 10 times. 00:19:31.26\00:19:36.75 Velvet beans, another form of good bean for L-Dopa. 00:19:36.78\00:19:42.01 Then there are some exercises for the shuffling feet, 00:19:42.04\00:19:46.82 of course the flexibility exercises, 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.06 be certain not to wear shoes that have 00:19:49.09\00:19:52.06 gripping type of soles, because shoes that slide, 00:19:52.09\00:19:56.86 can help a person who has Parkinson's, who is doing 00:19:56.89\00:20:00.37 the shuffling gate, can help them not to fall. 00:20:00.40\00:20:03.79 If the shoe, when they are going to slide the shoe and 00:20:03.82\00:20:08.38 it grips the surface, then they are more likely to topple. 00:20:08.41\00:20:11.14 Learn where the support groups are for Parkinson's disease, 00:20:11.17\00:20:16.65 in your community, and join one of those so that 00:20:16.68\00:20:19.97 you can learn how best to deal with this problem. 00:20:20.00\00:20:22.84 Another interesting feature of neurologic disease 00:20:22.87\00:20:27.47 is, that of depression. 00:20:27.50\00:20:28.98 While not basically a problem with altered nerves, 00:20:29.01\00:20:33.65 or sick nerves, it is certainly a problem of the 00:20:33.68\00:20:37.28 central nervous system, and Dr. Don Miller is going to 00:20:37.31\00:20:40.61 talk with you about depression now. 00:20:40.64\00:20:42.36 There are various forms of depression, 00:20:42.39\00:20:45.03 we will just talk about the garden variety depression. 00:20:45.06\00:20:47.86 There is a thing called seasonal affective disorder, 00:20:47.89\00:20:50.97 that a person going in to a certain season, 00:20:51.00\00:20:54.25 usually the winter seasons, the Christmas holidays, 00:20:54.28\00:20:56.97 whatever else they get into this depression. 00:20:57.00\00:20:58.78 These things can pretty much be covered by some of the things 00:20:58.81\00:21:02.63 I'll be talking about right now. 00:21:02.66\00:21:04.18 Basically, you can have physiological, 00:21:04.21\00:21:07.44 or psychological causes for your depression. 00:21:07.47\00:21:10.05 If a person has a chronic illness, like hepatitis, 00:21:10.08\00:21:13.87 or some other type of long term illness, 00:21:13.90\00:21:16.16 it can be very depressing for the person. 00:21:16.19\00:21:18.11 But also if there is a loss, if the person looses a loved one, 00:21:18.14\00:21:23.51 or looses a job, it can send them into a depression. 00:21:23.54\00:21:26.82 You can tell if a person is in a depression, you can just look 00:21:26.85\00:21:29.55 at their face, there face is expressionless. 00:21:29.58\00:21:31.73 Basically, they are pretty much flat lined 00:21:31.76\00:21:35.20 on many of the different areas, their appetite goes away, 00:21:35.23\00:21:38.28 their ambitions go away, they don't sleep very well. 00:21:38.31\00:21:43.98 Their energy is low, they just don't think straight, 00:21:44.01\00:21:47.59 a lot of different things are just sort of flat, 00:21:47.62\00:21:49.96 it's just a boring existence. 00:21:49.99\00:21:51.89 What can you do for a person 00:21:51.92\00:21:53.50 who is in this type of depression? 00:21:53.53\00:21:55.39 1. There has got to be a way to lift up the thoughts. 00:21:55.42\00:21:59.90 There is a law that I like very much, it's called 00:21:59.93\00:22:01.99 The Law of Reciprocal Influence. 00:22:02.02\00:22:04.90 As a person thinks in his heart, so is he. 00:22:04.93\00:22:08.01 If a person feels depressed, and he goes around telling 00:22:08.04\00:22:11.18 everybody how depressed he is 00:22:11.21\00:22:12.94 it only reinforces that depression. 00:22:12.97\00:22:15.33 The best thing that you can do for a person who is in 00:22:15.36\00:22:17.97 depression, is to find some way to turn their thoughts, 00:22:18.00\00:22:21.14 and their minds, and their expressions, their words, 00:22:21.17\00:22:24.06 into something more elevating. 00:22:24.09\00:22:25.59 Often if you talk with a person depressed, 00:22:25.62\00:22:29.65 they are going to tell you all their problems 00:22:29.68\00:22:31.24 it's always good to listen to them, but somehow 00:22:31.27\00:22:35.84 in that conversation keep trying to find a piece 00:22:35.87\00:22:39.30 of blessing, that they can find in their darkness. 00:22:39.33\00:22:43.52 Always try to lift their thoughts up, and say, 00:22:43.55\00:22:45.91 what went good for you yesterday, or if you can think 00:22:45.94\00:22:49.43 of something that's good about them, tell them, 00:22:49.46\00:22:51.68 and you are going to find that as they express positive things, 00:22:51.71\00:22:55.39 their spirits are going to rise, 00:22:55.42\00:22:57.44 A person with depression needs to have sunlight. 00:22:57.47\00:23:01.64 We find that people who live in northern climates, have more 00:23:01.67\00:23:05.51 depression than those who live in the southern climates. 00:23:05.54\00:23:07.93 We recommend for people with depression, that as soon as it 00:23:07.96\00:23:11.66 is time to get up in the morning, they turn on all the 00:23:11.69\00:23:14.06 lights in the room. 00:23:14.09\00:23:15.06 Bright lights in the eye are extremely good for someone 00:23:15.07\00:23:17.30 who is depressed. 00:23:17.33\00:23:18.30 The person who is depressed should get a lot of outdoor 00:23:18.31\00:23:20.67 activity, exercise is good for depression, sunshine is good 00:23:20.70\00:23:24.97 for depression, fresh air is good for depression. 00:23:25.00\00:23:27.34 So we need to get them into these particular things. 00:23:27.37\00:23:29.80 Deep breathing exercises is extremely good for depression. 00:23:29.83\00:23:35.01 There is a very easy exercise, and I'm going to 00:23:35.04\00:23:37.16 teach you right now. 00:23:37.19\00:23:38.19 What you basically do, your are taking a walk. 00:23:38.22\00:23:40.86 It's a good time to do your deep breathing exercise. 00:23:40.89\00:23:43.11 As you walk, count how many steps it takes to draw in 00:23:43.14\00:23:48.20 one breath of air. 00:23:48.23\00:23:49.63 Let's say you are walking along and you start to inhale, 00:23:49.66\00:23:53.07 you are counting 1, 2, 3, 4 steps, you got your air in, 00:23:53.10\00:23:57.91 that's your factor of one, and then what you want do 00:23:57.94\00:24:02.87 is multiply that factor by 4, so that makes it up to 16. 00:24:02.90\00:24:08.96 So what you do is you hold your breath for a factor of 16. 00:24:08.99\00:24:13.06 So you have walked along breathing in to the count of 4, 00:24:13.09\00:24:18.44 holding it for a count of 16 or 16 steps, and then you exhale it 00:24:18.47\00:24:23.35 for a factor of 2, which means 8, so sssss 00:24:23.38\00:24:29.32 and some- times it's pretty hard to get 00:24:29.36\00:24:32.20 the last bit out, because 8 steps is a long time. 00:24:32.23\00:24:36.27 You are going to find this to be very good 00:24:36.30\00:24:38.28 for many different problems. 00:24:38.31\00:24:40.20 Exercise, regularity, sunshine. 00:24:40.23\00:24:43.02 There is an interesting study that came out of 00:24:43.05\00:24:45.77 Ohio State University. 00:24:45.80\00:24:47.61 They found a good way to eliminate depression, 00:24:47.64\00:24:50.93 mood swings, irritability, nightmares, 00:24:50.96\00:24:54.22 and did three to do this. 00:24:54.25\00:24:56.82 Now you write these three things down, if you have 00:24:56.85\00:24:59.47 somebody who's depressed this could be the cause: 00:24:59.50\00:25:01.98 Sugary junk foods, refined carbohydrates, and caffeine, 00:25:02.01\00:25:07.53 caffeine type beverages, like coffee, tea, cola, 00:25:07.56\00:25:12.04 and then chocolate, eliminating those three things, found that 00:25:12.07\00:25:16.14 many people who had depression, eliminated all these things, 00:25:16.17\00:25:18.76 it was completely gone, a good suggestion and it doesn't cost 00:25:18.79\00:25:22.19 you any money to do it. 00:25:22.22\00:25:23.38 Often certain drugs can cause a person to be depressed, 00:25:23.41\00:25:28.05 so look at the side effects of drugs. 00:25:28.08\00:25:30.18 If a person is taking a drug, if a side effect is depression, 00:25:30.21\00:25:34.91 then try to find a different drug that does not 00:25:34.94\00:25:37.41 give them that problem. 00:25:37.44\00:25:38.61 There are some herbs that you can take, 00:25:38.64\00:25:41.29 Dr. Thrash has mentioned them, and many times the same herbs 00:25:41.32\00:25:44.92 that are for one thing in the neurological system, 00:25:44.95\00:25:47.56 is good for another, St. John's Wort, of course is good for 00:25:47.59\00:25:50.41 depression, you are going to hear that they are saying, 00:25:50.44\00:25:53.53 oh St. John's Wort is not good. 00:25:53.56\00:25:56.28 The reason why they many times say this, 00:25:56.31\00:25:58.62 for a person who is depressed, because they are already 00:25:58.65\00:26:00.61 taking anti-depressants, and the St. John's Wort 00:26:00.64\00:26:04.46 is so effective, it's like getting a double whammy, 00:26:04.49\00:26:06.84 so we recommend the St. John's Wort. 00:26:06.87\00:26:09.61 Valerian is another
