Fibromyalgia is a word that you've probably heard, 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.02 a lot of people tend to have it especially in middle aged women 00:00:04.05\00:00:08.23 and some people think that it is all in the head, 00:00:08.26\00:00:11.43 but for these people, there are some surprises in store so 00:00:11.46\00:00:14.95 I hope you will stay with us as we discuss this rather common 00:00:14.98\00:00:17.88 disorder, fibromyalgia. 00:00:17.91\00:00:20.09 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health 00:00:39.13\00:00:41.42 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:41.45\00:00:44.68 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:44.71\00:00:47.69 There are a lot of symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, 00:00:47.72\00:00:52.67 in fact they are wide spread in the body and sometimes 00:00:52.70\00:00:56.16 the person looking on who does not actually themselves feel 00:00:56.19\00:00:59.97 the symptoms, they think well this probably cannot possibly be 00:01:00.00\00:01:04.08 something that is real, it's probably simply something 00:01:04.11\00:01:07.75 that's just in the head, the person is just thinking these 00:01:07.78\00:01:11.06 things are true when they really are not. 00:01:11.09\00:01:13.61 But there is such a list of things that people can 00:01:13.64\00:01:18.89 suffer from, I'd just like to read some of these for you: 00:01:18.92\00:01:21.69 Can be, of course it's primarily diffuse and rather wide spread 00:01:21.72\00:01:28.30 pain, but with some tender points in certain areas, 00:01:28.33\00:01:32.10 in addition to these tender points, and the tenderness 00:01:32.13\00:01:36.56 all over, there may be fatigue, sleep disturbances, digestive 00:01:36.59\00:01:42.35 complaints of various kinds, bladder complaints of 00:01:42.38\00:01:45.40 various kinds, chronic head aches, feeling not well, 00:01:45.43\00:01:51.08 feeling sensations here and there that are not real, 00:01:51.11\00:01:55.23 hearing things that are not there, or having noises in the 00:01:55.26\00:02:00.26 head, being dizzy or unsteady on the feet, all of these are 00:02:00.29\00:02:04.96 things that people can feel and more, there are many 00:02:04.99\00:02:07.87 other symptoms that people with fibromyalgia may have. 00:02:07.90\00:02:11.41 The disorder is fairly common and for those people who have it 00:02:11.44\00:02:20.37 it's really quite a serious problem, it is not know why it 00:02:20.40\00:02:23.96 occurs but there are some things that are now developing 00:02:23.99\00:02:26.82 because of research that seem to point a finger in certain 00:02:26.85\00:02:30.33 areas so we would like to present some of those. 00:02:30.36\00:02:32.59 The diagnosis is based on the symptoms mainly and the history 00:02:32.62\00:02:36.57 of these symptoms and the treatment is unfortunately 00:02:36.60\00:02:40.06 non-specific, we just treat the symptoms and hope for the best, 00:02:40.09\00:02:44.99 but there is some good news and that is that it does tend to 00:02:45.02\00:02:49.53 sort of burn itself out, so after a few years the person 00:02:49.56\00:02:54.44 does say they are better and they are feeling quite well. 00:02:54.48\00:02:58.31 Now I would like to show you some of these tender points 00:02:58.34\00:03:02.15 and if you will look here at the board you will see these 00:03:02.18\00:03:06.01 points that I have drawn on the board, but then I would also 00:03:06.04\00:03:09.71 would also like to show you these on a person, so I've asked 00:03:09.74\00:03:13.47 Justina Thomas if she would come and help me to show that so 00:03:13.50\00:03:19.10 Justina come and I will let you just face the people 00:03:19.13\00:03:26.25 this way and I will show you where these points are located 00:03:26.28\00:03:29.93 on a real person: They are paired areas in all places 00:03:29.96\00:03:34.96 that you find these in the body, the tender points are paired 00:03:34.99\00:03:39.25 areas, one is right here, so if you push your fingers 00:03:39.28\00:03:44.43 right there for the person and they say ouch! then you've 00:03:44.46\00:03:49.03 probably hit the spot, now right here is another spot, so if you 00:03:49.06\00:03:54.86 press on this area just under the collar bone which is here 00:03:54.89\00:03:58.67 you press right there and the person says ouch!, 00:03:58.70\00:04:02.11 you've probably hit one of the tender spots, then right at 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.79 the elbow, right here and right here, always symmetrical 00:04:05.82\00:04:10.55 if you press in this area and the person says ouch! 00:04:10.58\00:04:15.12 then you've hit one of the spots. 00:04:15.15\00:04:17.23 Now there are two others as you can see at the knee, 00:04:17.26\00:04:21.66 now on back there are four paired spots on the front 00:04:21.69\00:04:28.46 and five paired spots on the back, as in the front 00:04:28.49\00:04:34.15 there are two on the neck high up, here is the base of the 00:04:34.18\00:04:38.25 skull right here and just below that on the neck there are two 00:04:38.28\00:04:42.13 points, then going out a little way on the shoulder, right here 00:04:42.16\00:04:47.62 there are two points, that feel tender? 00:04:47.65\00:04:49.59 - Yes! - She has it, and then 00:04:49.62\00:04:54.59 there are two other that are right here, 00:04:54.62\00:04:56.45 does that feel tender? - Yes! 00:04:56.48\00:04:59.10 Ok! She's probably got it, now to find this other one, 00:04:59.13\00:05:03.14 it's done simply this way, put your hands on the waist 00:05:03.17\00:05:06.96 and then just about just about the extent of your thumbs 00:05:06.99\00:05:09.84 if you just reach down like that you will find some little 00:05:09.87\00:05:13.49 dimples on the skeleton there and it's where those little 00:05:13.52\00:05:19.52 dimples are that you have the problem, then just under the 00:05:19.55\00:05:22.84 buttocks on the edges of the thighs you will find the other 00:05:22.87\00:05:26.29 tender spots, now fortunately Justina does not have the 00:05:26.32\00:05:31.43 problem but these are the spots that you can check, 00:05:31.46\00:05:37.49 just rub them or press on them and if you illicit pain and the 00:05:37.52\00:05:42.87 person has generalized pain and some of these other problems 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.01 then that may be helpful to make the diagnosis of 00:05:46.04\00:05:49.76 fibromyalgia, thank you Justina! 00:05:49.79\00:05:52.24 Now as I mentioned there are numerous research projects 00:05:52.27\00:05:57.54 going on, on this very baffling problem of fibromyalgia 00:05:57.57\00:06:03.19 and one of those has to do with digestive problems and 00:06:03.22\00:06:07.24 Dr. Don Miller who is here with me today, he is going to 00:06:07.27\00:06:13.03 tell you about one of these digestive complaints that 00:06:13.06\00:06:17.53 may have some pay dirt in establishing what this 00:06:17.56\00:06:22.22 disorder is, Dr. Miller! 00:06:22.25\00:06:25.38 - Yes, there are a lot of nice studies coming out. 00:06:25.41\00:06:27.74 This is from the annals of rheumatic disease, it says 00:06:27.77\00:06:32.10 in association between irritable bowel syndrome and small 00:06:32.13\00:06:35.75 intestinal bacterial growth has been found. 00:06:35.78\00:06:38.82 So IBS or irritable bowel syndrome which I'm going to 00:06:38.85\00:06:42.56 talk about right now could be associated with small intestine 00:06:42.59\00:06:48.09 bacterial overgrowth, let's go to the next one, 00:06:48.12\00:06:51.97 this comes Cedars of Sinai UCLA School of Medicine, 00:06:52.00\00:06:55.77 evidence that inflammatory bowel disease or Irritable Bowel 00:06:55.80\00:06:59.87 Syndrome could be associated with fibromyalgia. 00:06:59.90\00:07:03.97 Now we say that fibromyalgia could be associated with 00:07:04.00\00:07:08.07 Irritable Bowel Syndrome which could be associated with 00:07:08.10\00:07:10.68 small intestine bacterial overgrowth, so these could be 00:07:10.71\00:07:15.74 a causal link right here. 00:07:15.77\00:07:17.16 There is another study that came out as far as symptomatic 00:07:17.19\00:07:22.77 trying to see if there is symptoms here for 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.29 Irritable Bowel Syndrome, 92% of the people with IBS 00:07:25.32\00:07:28.97 have bloating, if you constantly feel bloated there is a good 00:07:29.00\00:07:33.56 possibility that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 00:07:33.59\00:07:36.82 Of course we find that things in our intestinal tract can 00:07:36.85\00:07:40.08 certainly cause this type of bloating, now there are some 00:07:40.11\00:07:43.07 symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome that we 00:07:43.10\00:07:45.74 need to look at, there is basically three different types: 00:07:45.77\00:07:48.20 1. There are people with constipation that is accompanied 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.63 by pain, and of course I would say most people are chronically 00:07:51.66\00:07:56.54 constipated just because of the life styles that we have, 00:07:56.57\00:07:59.60 but constipation with pain normally constipation does not 00:07:59.63\00:08:02.91 have pain until we try to pass the stools, but we are talking 00:08:02.94\00:08:05.92 about constipation and constant pain. 00:08:05.95\00:08:08.47 2. Then there is alternating between diarrhea and 00:08:08.50\00:08:12.53 constipation, normally the diarrhea will come upon first 00:08:12.56\00:08:16.43 rising and at breakfast time and then the rest of the day 00:08:16.46\00:08:19.57 will be constipation, if you are following this pattern 00:08:19.60\00:08:22.58 good chance that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 00:08:22.61\00:08:26.41 3. Then there is painless diarrhea accompanied by mucous. 00:08:26.45\00:08:30.85 So if you seem like you always have diarrhea and there seems 00:08:30.88\00:08:33.73 to be a lot of mucous in your stools then it could be a sign 00:08:33.76\00:08:37.96 that you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 00:08:37.99\00:08:40.64 There are other symptoms there, we have gas, of course gas 00:08:40.67\00:08:45.55 could be formed by many different things in our dietary, 00:08:45.58\00:08:48.04 our very lifestyles, if you find that every once in awhile 00:08:48.13\00:08:51.48 you have gas, the best way to find out what is causing my gas 00:08:51.51\00:08:54.34 is do what we call, keep a food diary, every time you have a 00:08:54.37\00:08:59.58 meal you write down what you eat and then you start 00:08:59.61\00:09:02.37 writing down symptoms. 00:09:02.40\00:09:03.55 If you have a symptom that every once in awhile you have, 00:09:03.58\00:09:05.96 write down the symptom, write down what you are eating until 00:09:05.99\00:09:09.77 you see a pattern developing, it seems like every time I eat 00:09:09.80\00:09:13.65 peanuts I start itching the next day, and if you find that 00:09:13.68\00:09:18.06 pattern, then apparently your problem is peanuts, 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.04 or your problem is beans, or greens or something else, 00:09:20.07\00:09:22.91 find out what it is. 00:09:22.94\00:09:23.91 A person with IBS will often be nauseated, this is something 00:09:23.94\00:09:29.22 going wrong in the stomach and in the intestinal tract 00:09:29.25\00:09:32.36 can cause nausea, bad breath, we realize that if you have 00:09:32.39\00:09:36.52 mal-digestion things going on in the intestinal tract, 00:09:36.55\00:09:41.82 it's going to back up and you will start to smell it 00:09:41.85\00:09:44.02 through the breath, bloating, weakness, appetite loss, 00:09:44.05\00:09:47.64 even faintness, all are signs of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 00:09:47.67\00:09:51.70 Usually it appears between the ages of 20 and 50, women have it 00:09:51.73\00:09:57.75 about twice as much as men do for some reason, and about 00:09:57.78\00:10:02.14 one fifth of the Americans have this particular problem 00:10:02.17\00:10:05.26 so it is not an uncommon problem and there are some 00:10:05.29\00:10:08.32 simple things that you can do for Irritable Bowel Syndrome 00:10:08.35\00:10:10.39 and if that's associated with fibromyalgia then this is the 00:10:10.42\00:10:13.85 tract we want to take to try to take care of it. 00:10:13.88\00:10:15.92 The reason why you have the sometimes diarrhea and sometimes 00:10:15.95\00:10:22.32 constipation is a spasmodic contraction of the colon, 00:10:22.35\00:10:26.85 if it goes to fast you are going to have diarrhea, if it goes 00:10:26.88\00:10:31.11 to slow you are going to have constipation because the purpose 00:10:31.14\00:10:32.11 of the colon is to take up moisture and prepare it for 00:10:32.14\00:10:37.54 exiting the body and so a spasmodic, sometimes it is 00:10:37.57\00:10:41.67 going to fast, sometimes it is going to slow, you are going to 00:10:41.70\00:10:44.60 have your diarrhea and constipation going 00:10:44.63\00:10:47.04 back and forth. 00:10:47.07\00:10:48.04 So what can you do to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome? 00:10:48.05\00:10:51.22 Since it said over here in this one particular study that it's 00:10:51.25\00:10:55.34 associated with a bacterial overgrowth and also other things 00:10:55.37\00:11:00.20 growing in the colon, then there are some certain things 00:11:00.23\00:11:03.38 that we can take that are vermicides, that will kill off 00:11:03.41\00:11:07.66 worms, bacteria, funguses, and other things growing in 00:11:07.69\00:11:12.18 our intestinal tract. 00:11:12.21\00:11:13.65 Let me just read some of these I'm going to read them rather 00:11:13.68\00:11:16.17 slowly because if you think you have this problem and let's 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.08 go beyond this problem, let's go to where you are going to be 00:11:19.11\00:11:23.04 traveling in another country where you might pick up a bug 00:11:23.07\00:11:25.52 that you don't want to have or you might have some type of 00:11:25.55\00:11:29.35 intestinal parasites from whatever reason, if you have 00:11:29.38\00:11:33.06 pruritis ani, you are always scratching at the anus or 00:11:33.09\00:11:36.34 other things, it could be a sign and so here are some of the 00:11:36.37\00:11:39.75 things that you can take to help purge these things from 00:11:39.78\00:11:43.21 your system: Aloe Vera is very good, you can take it in 00:11:43.24\00:11:46.77 a number of forms, you can go to the store and buy some 00:11:46.80\00:11:49.01 Aloe Vera liquid and drink it that way, I like to just take an 00:11:49.04\00:11:54.22 Aloe Vera plant, I've got a bunch of them growing on my 00:11:54.25\00:11:57.07 window sill in my office, I'll take a whole leaf off, 00:11:57.10\00:12:00.78 cut it, cut the little spines off, wash it off, I'll drop the 00:12:01.69\00:12:04.88 whole thing into a blender along with a banana and some pineapple 00:12:04.91\00:12:08.36 juice and whiz that up and it makes sort of a chiffon 00:12:08.39\00:12:11.06 and so I'm getting my Aloe Vera juice in a very pleasant way. 00:12:11.09\00:12:14.66 Worm-Wood, now I'm going to mention a few herbs here that 00:12:14.69\00:12:18.50 are extremely good I would not travel over seas without these 00:12:18.53\00:12:21.68 things, Worm-Wood is one, another on is Echinacea, 00:12:21.71\00:12:25.43 Goldenseal, these are very common herbs in America, 00:12:25.46\00:12:29.06 Goldenseal is extremely expensive but get some, 00:12:29.09\00:12:32.15 have it on hand, cloves, now we don't recommend you eat 00:12:32.18\00:12:36.08 cloves all the time because they are a spice and can be 00:12:36.11\00:12:38.96 irritating to the intestinal tract, but it's very good for 00:12:38.99\00:12:42.64 expelling things that should not be growing there. 00:12:42.67\00:12:45.29 Burdock, another extremely good vermicide is Black Walnut, 00:12:45.32\00:12:50.97 I usually buy it in a tincture form, if you buy something 00:12:51.00\00:12:58.23 that's been extracted by alcohol I don't recommend you taking it 00:12:58.26\00:13:02.73 just taking the dropper and just putting it into your mouth 00:13:02.76\00:13:05.66 because any alcohol is not good, here's what I do, 00:13:05.69\00:13:08.81 I bring some water to a boil, (a cup of water), 00:13:08.84\00:13:11.88 I pour the water into a cup, I add my extract and let the 00:13:11.91\00:13:17.53 heat dissipate the alcohol, just a few moments and it's all 00:13:17.56\00:13:21.62 dissipated and then you can drink it with perfect safety. 00:13:21.65\00:13:24.78 Grapefruit seed extract, another thing I will not travel without 00:13:24.81\00:13:28.51 when I go overseas, I usually carry a few bottles because 00:13:28.54\00:13:31.73 I usually end up giving it away to other people I find 00:13:31.76\00:13:33.83 along the way, I will add it to all water I drink overseas 00:13:33.86\00:13:37.61 taken from a common source, I try to buy bottled water but 00:13:37.64\00:13:41.29 anyway the GSE, Grapefruit Seed Extract is extremely good for 00:13:41.32\00:13:45.04 expelling these types of things, and establishing a good flora 00:13:45.07\00:13:49.27 in your intestinal tract. 00:13:49.30\00:13:50.71 Pumpkin seeds and figs are very good, another thing is get some 00:13:50.74\00:13:56.74 Diatomaceous Earth, you can buy Diatomaceous Earth, 00:13:56.77\00:13:59.68 capsulize it, or you can buy it in capsules and take this for 00:13:59.71\00:14:03.19 about three weeks, if you have worms or other types of 00:14:03.22\00:14:05.85 parasites, they will eat it and it will cause them to 00:14:05.88\00:14:08.11 disintegrate, very good thing to take and it won't hurt you 00:14:08.14\00:14:10.64 at all. 00:14:10.67\00:14:11.64 Garlic, onion, cabbage and carrots, are extremely good 00:14:11.65\00:14:16.22 they are all high in sulfur, the animals that may be inhabiting 00:14:16.25\00:14:19.99 your intestinal tract don't like them so take those. 00:14:20.02\00:14:22.91 Garlic is extremely good, I go to places in the world 00:14:22.94\00:14:27.50 over there in Africa, I go to this place called Shingoma 00:14:27.53\00:14:30.41 and there is a lot of people living in the area with asthma 00:14:30.44\00:14:34.72 and worms and other things and so I take garlic to them 00:14:34.75\00:14:37.93 and I say plant the garlic, I give them enough to take 00:14:37.96\00:14:40.82 right then and enough to grow so garlic is great to have, 00:14:40.85\00:14:44.26 I would take some garlic drops or some garlic capsules with you 00:14:44.29\00:14:48.53 and extremely good for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 00:14:48.56\00:14:50.74 Bilberry, tarragon, and Mugwort also are very good as expellers 00:14:50.77\00:14:57.46 of these type of things from your system, so I would 00:14:57.49\00:15:00.00 recommend you take them. 00:15:00.03\00:15:01.04 You can apply heat to the abdomen when you have 00:15:01.07\00:15:05.58 Irritable Bowel Syndrome because it's very good for causing a 00:15:05.61\00:15:09.88 relaxation and taking away the pain, charcoal is very good 00:15:09.91\00:15:13.83 for the gas, now charcoal will take care of the gas but 00:15:13.86\00:15:16.63 find out what's causing the gas and then you won't have to 00:15:16.66\00:15:19.68 take it in the first place. 00:15:19.71\00:15:20.82 Swallowing air, now when do we swallow air, people who drink 00:15:20.85\00:15:24.70 soda's, all that fizziness they are swallowing that, 00:15:24.73\00:15:30.86 it will cause bloating and cause more gas, increase the 00:15:30.89\00:15:34.51 bran and fiber in the diet basically by eating fruits 00:15:34.54\00:15:38.30 and vegetables in their natural state and whole grains and 00:15:38.33\00:15:41.49 drinking plenty of water along with this, and extremely regular 00:15:41.52\00:15:45.97 be on a regular schedule, it's extremely good for Irritable 00:15:46.00\00:15:48.98 Bowel Syndrome, that means that you are eating at the 00:15:49.01\00:15:51.35 same time every day, you are going to bed at the same time 00:15:51.38\00:15:53.90 every day, you are exercising at the same time every day, 00:15:53.93\00:15:57.13 and never eat food before going to bed at night. 00:15:57.16\00:16:00.50 These are some simple things that you can do for Irritable 00:16:00.53\00:16:03.59 Bowel Syndrome, and as you follow these simple steps 00:16:03.62\00:16:06.59 God has promised if we do our part He will do His part, 00:16:06.62\00:16:11.54 so you are praying and if there is something that I haven't 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.26 mentioned ask Him, say Father what else can I do and He will 00:16:13.29\00:16:16.93 give you some simple things to do and if you find out 00:16:16.96\00:16:19.63 something that works for you you call us and let us know, 00:16:19.66\00:16:22.43 an that's pretty much how you found out all the simple 00:16:22.46\00:16:25.09 remedies that you put in all your books isn't it Dr. Thrash? 00:16:25.12\00:16:27.65 - We found a lot that way, I am very happy that there is 00:16:27.68\00:16:31.90 a lot of research now going on to establish the validity of 00:16:31.93\00:16:37.60 very simple things, take the one for fibromyalgia that just 00:16:37.63\00:16:41.57 came out about six or eight months ago about vitamin D. 00:16:41.60\00:16:47.53 Deficiency in vitamin D has a wide spread group of symptoms 00:16:47.56\00:16:54.53 some of them very much like fibromyalgia, so someone got 00:16:54.56\00:16:57.73 the idea, I think it was published in the 00:16:57.76\00:17:02.49 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and they found that 00:17:02.52\00:17:06.46 by giving people vitamin D they could make a change in the 00:17:06.49\00:17:11.79 symptoms that people have, so then they checked the 00:17:11.82\00:17:14.54 vitamin D levels of all the people that they had, 00:17:14.58\00:17:17.63 all patients who came in with fibromyalgia, they checked them 00:17:17.66\00:17:21.45 for their vitamin D level in the blood and they found that as 00:17:21.48\00:17:25.98 a general class the people with fibromyalgia tend to have 00:17:26.01\00:17:30.65 low vitamin D levels and so what we are now recommending 00:17:30.68\00:17:37.08 is that many people, not just people with fibromyalgia 00:17:37.11\00:17:40.27 but many people get an annual vitamin D level run in the 00:17:40.30\00:17:46.52 blood, it can be very revealing. 00:17:46.55\00:17:49.20 Now there is another one that comes out of Boston, 00:17:49.23\00:17:52.17 also very recently in the Boston University School of Medicine 00:17:52.20\00:17:57.41 did a very nice research project on vitamin D and it's 00:17:57.44\00:18:02.71 relationship to fibromyalgia and found essentially the 00:18:02.74\00:18:05.98 same thing, that giving vitamin D to people with 00:18:06.01\00:18:09.98 fibromyalgia will often improve their symptoms. 00:18:10.01\00:18:14.02 Here is another one that is published in a journal called 00:18:14.05\00:18:18.17 Medical Hypotheses and this one show that chronic 00:18:18.20\00:18:24.63 inflammation can be a problem for people who have 00:18:24.66\00:18:28.43 fibromyalgia, they found that the stress between various cells 00:18:29.66\00:18:35.50 of the vascular tree could release some nitrous oxide 00:18:35.53\00:18:41.81 into the blood and that caused a relaxation but in these 00:18:41.84\00:18:46.18 individuals with fibromyalgia they tended not to have such 00:18:46.22\00:18:50.49 good sheer forces and consequently did not release 00:18:50.52\00:18:54.60 as much nitrous oxide and so they postulated that chronic 00:18:54.63\00:18:59.32 inflammation was a factor so they did some tests that 00:18:59.36\00:19:02.93 revealed that chronic inflammation was going on 00:19:02.96\00:19:05.21 in these people and in the whole class of patients who have 00:19:05.24\00:19:10.19 fibromyalgia and by eliminating inflammation they could improve 00:19:10.22\00:19:15.39 the fibromyalgia. 00:19:15.42\00:19:16.51 Here is another very interesting study that was done with a 00:19:16.54\00:19:22.52 staphylococcus vaccine, what they did was to take the 00:19:22.55\00:19:26.34 staphylococcus and make a staph vaccine then they injected 00:19:26.37\00:19:30.03 it into patients with fibromyalgia and they found that 00:19:30.06\00:19:33.72 giving the vaccine improved a number of things about the 00:19:33.75\00:19:38.13 patient, their ability to neutralize a staph antigen 00:19:38.16\00:19:43.52 greatly improved and they also were able to neutralize a staph 00:19:43.55\00:19:51.53 toxin, that also improved, so while they were doing this they 00:19:51.56\00:19:56.77 discovered that the IGG, the Immune Globulin G was also 00:19:56.80\00:20:01.90 improved in these individuals but not in the controls, 00:20:01.93\00:20:06.06 none of these things were present in the control people 00:20:06.09\00:20:09.16 who were normal but did improve in the people with fibromyalgia, 00:20:09.19\00:20:13.96 so as you can see there are a number of things that are now 00:20:13.99\00:20:16.75 being found and another one of those is an interesting one 00:20:16.78\00:20:21.32 and Dr. Don Miller will talk with you about that right now. 00:20:21.35\00:20:25.14 - Sometimes I read some of these studies and I am absolutely 00:20:25.17\00:20:28.71 amazed at what science is investigating and I wonder 00:20:28.74\00:20:32.20 why did they go down this road but I'm glad they 00:20:32.23\00:20:34.38 went down this road. 00:20:34.41\00:20:35.47 This one from the Journal Of Women's Health, the title of the 00:20:35.51\00:20:39.72 study is asking a question: Use Less Cosmetics, Suffer Less 00:20:39.75\00:20:44.84 From Fibromyalgia, and basically here is one of the premises: 00:20:44.87\00:20:49.71 fibromyalgia patients often complained of dry skin 00:20:49.74\00:20:53.71 and so the person conducting this study hypothesized that 00:20:53.74\00:20:58.15 perhaps it's all this cosmetics and the dry skin and the 00:20:58.18\00:21:02.51 moisturizers could be causing the problem. 00:21:02.54\00:21:05.07 It says here over ambitious cleaning resulting in dry skin 00:21:05.10\00:21:10.21 and regular use of cosmetics as moisturizers could contribute 00:21:10.24\00:21:15.10 to their symptoms. 00:21:15.13\00:21:16.71 So he took a group of women who used make-up and who did not 00:21:16.74\00:21:20.68 use make-up and found out what is the result here? 00:21:20.71\00:21:24.75 After two years in the study here's what he found: 00:21:24.78\00:21:27.31 After two years there was a significant improvement in pain, 00:21:27.34\00:21:30.94 which is one of the major problems in fibromyalgia, 00:21:30.97\00:21:33.92 improvement in sleep, another symptom of fibromyalgia, 00:21:33.95\00:21:38.60 sleep loss, and stiffness, together with better physical 00:21:38.63\00:21:43.05 function and improved well being, something as simple as 00:21:43.08\00:21:47.21 not rubbing the stuff on your face and it could be a real 00:21:47.24\00:21:51.83 good way of not having the fibromyalgia problems Dr. Thrash 00:21:51.86\00:21:56.14 it sounds like a pretty cheap and sane way of doing it. 00:21:56.17\00:21:59.87 - A good way and I'm very happy that we have that one. 00:21:59.90\00:22:02.83 Here is another one that shows that if there is some kind of 00:22:02.86\00:22:08.04 obstruction to the intake of air when one is sleeping, 00:22:08.07\00:22:12.26 that can be associated very closely with fibromyalgia 00:22:12.29\00:22:17.78 and then if they put a machine for positive pressure air 00:22:17.81\00:22:22.16 then they found that these patients greatly improved. 00:22:22.19\00:22:25.25 Here is another one that hooked up some women with fibromyalgia 00:22:25.28\00:22:29.48 to an EEG, an electroencephalogram and they 00:22:29.51\00:22:33.07 found sleep spindles were abnormal in the women with 00:22:33.10\00:22:37.69 fibromyalgia, in fact they might have a decreased number and 00:22:37.72\00:22:42.46 decreased quality of the sleep spindles that are the 00:22:42.49\00:22:48.69 Hallmark of good sleep. 00:22:48.72\00:22:50.09 Another study showed that fibromyalgia might be an 00:22:50.12\00:22:55.14 auto-immune disorder, very complicated study but a very 00:22:55.17\00:22:59.19 nicely done and indicated that it may be associated with or 00:22:59.22\00:23:04.89 actually be an immune disorder. 00:23:04.92\00:23:06.97 Now another thing that Dr. Miller is going to 00:23:07.00\00:23:10.41 talk with you about is one of the Hallmark's of fibromyalgia 00:23:10.44\00:23:16.85 and then I will tell you a few things to do to treat it. 00:23:16.88\00:23:20.41 - Well I'm going to mention one thing that is very good for 00:23:20.44\00:23:23.47 perhaps treating the symptoms and the problems caused by it. 00:23:23.50\00:23:27.41 This was found in the International Journal of 00:23:27.44\00:23:30.07 Psychiatry Medicine, they were trying to study the fact that 00:23:30.10\00:23:34.94 fibromyalgia is often caused by stress, psychological stress 00:23:34.97\00:23:40.20 it's been linked both with the beginning of fibromyalgia 00:23:40.23\00:23:43.04 and the symptoms severity and so they found that people 00:23:43.07\00:23:47.04 who are religious, and here is the conclusion of the study 00:23:47.07\00:23:49.95 right down here at the bottom. These data, the data they have 00:23:49.98\00:23:53.02 in the study suggests that the religiousness of a person, 00:23:53.05\00:23:57.06 the religious spiritual connection with God may have a 00:23:57.09\00:24:01.37 protective effect upon a patient with fibromyalgia. 00:24:01.40\00:24:04.84 There's another thing that you can do as far as perhaps 00:24:04.87\00:24:08.07 diagnosing fibromyalgia, we find that women with fibromyalgia 00:24:08.10\00:24:14.44 urinated eight or more times during the day compared to 00:24:14.47\00:24:17.62 six times for women who do not have fibromyalgia. 00:24:17.65\00:24:21.17 So perhaps there is something about the abnormally high 00:24:21.20\00:24:25.04 frequency in urination that's characteristic feature of 00:24:25.07\00:24:27.88 fibromyalgia so that's just one of the other signs that if 00:24:27.91\00:24:31.47 you have frequent urination during the day and sometimes 00:24:31.50\00:24:34.36 urgency means you've got to go but you can't go very much, 00:24:34.39\00:24:37.51 it could be a sign that it is in fact fibromyalgia. 00:24:37.54\00:24:40.87 - Very good diagnostic feature there, now as to the treatment 00:24:40.90\00:24:45.39 some of these are very nice treatments. 00:24:45.42\00:24:48.51 Here is one that's depressed mood often means that the kind 00:24:48.54\00:24:54.42 of treatment that you are going to give may be a failure 00:24:54.45\00:24:57.63 so the first thing to do is to relieve the depression that 00:24:57.66\00:25:02.79 person feels, and often the fibromyalgia itself makes the 00:25:02.82\00:25:06.77 person depressed, they wonder what is wrong with me, 00:25:06.80\00:25:10.01 people think that I am just putting on, I really don't 00:25:10.04\00:25:13.03 feel good, I'm not lazy I'm sick, and yet they look good 00:25:13.06\00:25:17.83 and they are strong but they just have these disabling 00:25:17.86\00:25:23.51 symptoms, so first correct that and any other kind of treatment 00:25:23.54\00:25:29.73 that you do will be more helpful. 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.09 Then here is one of Spa therapy, I like this one, it almost makes 00:25:32.12\00:25:38.72 me want to have fibromyalgia just to get t do the treatment. 00:25:38.75\00:25:41.80 This was a study done in Turkey, it would be nice to go to a Spa 00:25:41.83\00:25:45.36 and get a treatment at the Spa and enjoy the Spa. 00:25:45.39\00:25:50.51 Here is one swimming, another good treatment, but people with 00:25:50.54\00:25:55.01 fibromyalgia who entered into a swimming therapy, 00:25:55.04\00:25:59.20 they did far better than those who did not do it, and while 00:25:59.23\00:26:03.39 none of these treatment is entirely curative, they do 00:26:03.42\00:26:07.21 help so much that they are well worth the trial to do. 00:26:07.24\00:26:11.59 Here is another study, this was low intensity aerobic exercises 00:26:11.62\00:26:16.73 such as walking, or riding a bicycle at low speed, nothing 00:26:16.76\00:26:22.99 that's exhausting nor debilitating for a person 00:26:23.02\00:26:27.59 who is not well but something that they can easily do and 00:26:27.62\00:26:32.14 the tender points improved and the general tenderness also 00:26:32.17\00:26:35.63 improved quite a lot. 00:26:35.66\00:26:36.82 There is another one that I would really enjoy and that's 00:26:36.85\00:26:40.25 baths in the Dead Sea, that's sounds like a fun thing to do. 00:26:40.28\00:26:46.05 Here is one that is obvious what it would help and that is 00:26:46.08\00:26:51.23 hyperbaric oxygen therapy oxygen given in a chamber that 00:26:51.26\00:26:56.18 is under pressure and that has found to be helpful for 00:26:56.21\00:27:00.83 a number of patients. 00:27:00.86\00:27:01.83 Then here is one that was done in Utah, giving patients Ribose 00:27:01.84\00:27:09.64 which is a sugar that's associated with the energy 00:27:09.67\00:27:13.47 capsules that we make in the body, and this was shown to be 00:27:13.50\00:27:18.27 very helpful in repleating the reserves of energy that 00:27:18.30\00:27:24.87 these people have with fibromyalgia. 00:27:24.90\00:27:27.89 Now again the good news is that fibromyalgia tends to get better 00:27:27.92\00:27:34.62 in a few years, and even if it is all by itself even if it's 00:27:34.65\00:27:38.36 not helped by any of these nice treatments it will still get 00:27:38.39\00:27:43.10 better eventually, so the woman should not be depressed, 00:27:43.13\00:27:46.31 she should not be discouraged, she should do some of these 00:27:46.34\00:27:49.17 exercises and expect that the Lord is going to give her 00:27:49.20\00:27:52.28 complete relief, may the Lord Bless you with relief. 00:27:52.31\00:27:55.60
