The Genito-urinary tract is 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.69 probably the most wonderful the most complex system in the 00:00:03.72\00:00:09.10 body apart from the central nervous system. 00:00:09.13\00:00:12.03 It's so complex it is so wonderful that sometimes 00:00:12.07\00:00:16.53 it has some problems with it and we will be discussing 00:00:16.56\00:00:19.75 some of the problems that the genito-urinary system can have 00:00:19.78\00:00:23.58 in this next program, we hope that you will join us for it. 00:00:23.61\00:00:26.30 Welcome to Help Yourself To Health 00:00:45.01\00:00:47.71 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:47.74\00:00:51.09 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:51.12\00:00:53.97 Because of it's complexity and because of the diligent work 00:00:54.00\00:01:01.23 that it does all the time day and night, because of that 00:01:01.26\00:01:05.41 kidney is subject to certain problems that other parts 00:01:05.44\00:01:09.75 of the body may not be subject to. 00:01:09.78\00:01:11.70 One of the things that it has to do is to take care of every 00:01:11.73\00:01:17.06 bit of the blood that courses through the body, 00:01:17.09\00:01:20.00 all the blood that the heart pumps through the kidneys 00:01:20.03\00:01:24.59 at one time or other to get cleansed and to get purified 00:01:24.62\00:01:28.40 also to have some readjustments of the PH, of the blood and 00:01:28.43\00:01:33.00 of a variety of other things. 00:01:33.03\00:01:34.87 The kidney is responsible for taking excess water out of 00:01:34.90\00:01:39.28 the blood or if the blood is a little bit slow on getting 00:01:39.31\00:01:45.06 water from your elementary tract, then the kidney is 00:01:45.09\00:01:50.21 responsible for conserving water. 00:01:50.24\00:01:52.37 It has a wonderful mechanism for re-absorbing all the water 00:01:52.40\00:01:57.99 from the blood that flows through the little nephrons 00:01:58.23\00:02:02.14 that make up the functioning units of the kidney. 00:02:02.17\00:02:07.95 Now the kidney is constantly busy day and night and while it 00:02:07.98\00:02:13.07 has a little rest during the night, it doesn't work quite 00:02:13.10\00:02:16.69 so hard and certain of it's units rest today and then they 00:02:16.72\00:02:22.18 wake up and work tomorrow, then after a few hours 00:02:22.21\00:02:26.54 of working they rest again and then wake up and work again. 00:02:26.57\00:02:31.32 It's a very marvelous mechanism to control which nephrons work 00:02:31.35\00:02:35.99 and which ones don't work at any given time. 00:02:36.02\00:02:38.83 Now as blood flows through the kidneys if it has germs 00:02:38.86\00:02:43.49 in the blood then because of the complexity of the workings 00:02:43.52\00:02:49.54 of the little blood vessels inside the kidney, 00:02:49.57\00:02:52.84 because of that these germs can be filtered out and can 00:02:52.87\00:02:58.63 setup housekeeping in the kidney. 00:02:58.66\00:03:01.42 Now the kidney is pretty resistant to infection so it 00:03:01.45\00:03:04.64 doesn't get infected often, but when it does get infected 00:03:04.67\00:03:07.70 it can cause a very serious problem, the fever goes 00:03:07.73\00:03:12.04 sky high, the person is prostrate, they can't get out 00:03:12.07\00:03:16.25 of bed, they can be so sick that they have no appetite, 00:03:16.28\00:03:20.35 they may have pain in the back, they may have pain on urination 00:03:20.38\00:03:24.26 and they are really quite sick, quite intensely sick. 00:03:24.29\00:03:27.66 Now to get some idea of how the kidney is fairing 00:03:27.69\00:03:35.18 you can do a very mild examination and I have asked 00:03:35.21\00:03:38.93 Justina to help me showing you how to do an examination. 00:03:38.96\00:03:45.06 This is Justina Thomas and we will need to examine her from 00:03:45.09\00:03:49.80 the back, it's a very simple operation to do this little 00:03:49.83\00:03:53.12 maneuver, you first find the waist and that's here, 00:03:53.15\00:03:57.42 and then you find the inferior angle of the scapula, 00:03:57.45\00:04:01.42 that's right here, so half way between the waist and 00:04:01.45\00:04:06.25 the scapula is right here, now if you will slide your 00:04:06.28\00:04:10.74 finger once you have found that toward the spine 00:04:10.77\00:04:13.47 so here is spine and if you'll slide your finger towards that 00:04:13.50\00:04:18.30 you'll be just about at the upper pole of the kidneys 00:04:18.33\00:04:21.61 so the kidney is going to be right here. 00:04:21.64\00:04:24.05 So the first thing that you can do is simply to rub it 00:04:24.08\00:04:28.09 just like this, you rub it, Justina does that hurt? 00:04:28.12\00:04:31.56 - No! - No, well now if she had acute 00:04:31.59\00:04:36.06 pyelonephritis she might say yes, now once you have done 00:04:36.09\00:04:40.35 that and that doesn't cause pain, then you put your hand 00:04:40.38\00:04:45.46 on it take your fist, and you do that, did that hurt? 00:04:45.49\00:04:49.96 - Yes! - It didn't hurt her but if she 00:04:49.99\00:04:53.42 had had pyelonephritis it might have, she might have been 00:04:53.45\00:04:57.55 very much hurt by that, so with a normal person 00:04:57.58\00:05:01.83 you can give them a good sharp blow and there is no problem 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.76 but a person with pyelonephritis don't give them a hard blow 00:05:04.79\00:05:08.30 like that, you just make a little tap and then ask them 00:05:08.33\00:05:11.23 did that cause pain? 00:05:11.26\00:05:12.49 If it does cause pain, then you have a very sick kidney 00:05:12.52\00:05:16.59 now at the same time that you have done this little 00:05:16.62\00:05:20.29 maneuver on the patient, you can ask them the questions 00:05:20.32\00:05:24.99 the questions that I have just gone over that is: 00:05:25.02\00:05:27.28 Do you have pain on urination, is there a problem with pain 00:05:27.31\00:05:31.28 when I don't pound on it, how high is the fever, 00:05:31.31\00:05:35.64 all of those things are things that can help you to know 00:05:35.67\00:05:38.41 if the patient has pyelonephritis, 00:05:38.44\00:05:41.35 thank you Justina. 00:05:41.38\00:05:43.03 Now understanding this about pyelonephritis does not give you 00:05:43.06\00:05:49.28 much of the understanding of the seriousness of this disease 00:05:49.31\00:05:54.26 it can be so serious that it can make little abscesses that 00:05:54.29\00:05:58.66 then heal with a scar, the kidney can loose a great deal 00:05:58.69\00:06:03.48 with a very serious case of pyelonephritis, the person can 00:06:03.51\00:06:08.04 get a third or a half of the kidney destroyed by these 00:06:08.07\00:06:13.47 abscesses that occur in the kidney, so it can be 00:06:13.50\00:06:16.52 quite serious. 00:06:16.55\00:06:17.52 Very fortunately most of the time the pyelonephritis 00:06:17.55\00:06:21.52 is not very serious, does not give the serious symptoms 00:06:21.55\00:06:25.18 that I have mentioned but merely have the person to be 00:06:25.21\00:06:31.54 like having the flu or a cold, they may ache a little 00:06:31.57\00:06:36.00 and have a little fever and they may want to lie around 00:06:36.03\00:06:39.46 the house for a day or so and they do have some urinary 00:06:39.49\00:06:42.75 tract symptoms with pain or burning on urination. 00:06:42.78\00:06:45.89 When they look at the stool after they have passed their 00:06:45.92\00:06:52.00 urine they see in the commode bloody urine or smoky urine. 00:06:52.03\00:06:56.35 The smoke color is very specific of blood in the urine, 00:06:56.38\00:07:01.16 so this smoky color can alert you that the problem is still 00:07:01.19\00:07:05.34 going on even when the patient feels quite good. 00:07:05.37\00:07:08.29 Now what can you do for this problem if you don't have 00:07:08.32\00:07:12.29 professional help and of course for something as serious as 00:07:12.32\00:07:16.65 pyelonephritis you'll want the best professional help that 00:07:16.68\00:07:20.08 you can get, but let's say that you are in a field situation, 00:07:20.11\00:07:22.32 you don't have a physician near by and you believe that your 00:07:22.35\00:07:27.46 patient has pyelonephritis, the look of the urine, 00:07:27.49\00:07:31.16 the symptoms that the person has, your examination which 00:07:31.19\00:07:34.26 reveals tenderness in the proper area, then what can you do? 00:07:34.29\00:07:38.32 the first thing is to give hot packs to the abdomen, 00:07:38.35\00:07:43.37 these should be fairly short so that you put the pack on 00:07:43.40\00:07:48.55 the back and after a short while you make a change so that it's 00:07:48.58\00:07:54.34 an ice pack, so it's a hot pack and then an ice pack, 00:07:54.37\00:07:59.28 three minutes for the hot, about 30-60 seconds for the 00:07:59.31\00:08:03.98 cold, the icy cold and then when you have finished with 00:08:04.83\00:08:09.01 that part then you repeat that five times and then you give 00:08:09.04\00:08:14.23 a massage. 00:08:14.26\00:08:15.29 Now the massage is not one that you really go in there 00:08:15.32\00:08:18.93 after it and you do all sorts of things that may be very nice 00:08:18.96\00:08:23.36 for a person who is in good health, but for the person 00:08:23.39\00:08:27.30 with pyelonephritis you make the massage rather gentle 00:08:27.33\00:08:32.35 except that you want to friction the skin, so the skin can be 00:08:32.38\00:08:35.96 frictioned with a quick movement but not with a lot of pressure 00:08:35.99\00:08:40.36 and that is a very good hydrotherapy and finish for 00:08:40.39\00:08:45.27 the patient with pyelonephritis. 00:08:45.30\00:08:47.80 Now in addition to that you can use a number of 00:08:47.83\00:08:50.46 anti-microbial herbs, and the very minute that you suspect 00:08:50.49\00:08:54.95 that a person may have a urinary tract infection start right in 00:08:54.98\00:08:59.10 at that time with the herbal preparations, 00:08:59.13\00:09:03.28 those that are anti-microbial include those that contain 00:09:03.31\00:09:08.93 Golden Seal, Astragalus, Echinacea, maybe Elderberry, 00:09:08.96\00:09:16.21 perhaps some Grapefruit Seed Extract, garlic, Myrrh, 00:09:16.24\00:09:22.50 Calendula, all of those are anti-microbial and there are 00:09:22.53\00:09:26.32 many others in countries far flung all over the world 00:09:26.35\00:09:30.58 there are the anti-microbial herbs which you can find 00:09:30.61\00:09:34.60 in that area and apply those. 00:09:34.63\00:09:37.10 Now having done all of these you may still have a sick 00:09:37.13\00:09:42.72 patient, so one of the things that you can do additionally 00:09:42.75\00:09:47.38 is to put an ice pack on the lower end of the sternum, 00:09:47.41\00:09:51.62 that's the breast bone, so at the lower end of it 00:09:51.65\00:09:54.61 you put an ice pack there so that increases inflectively 00:09:54.64\00:09:59.80 the flow of urine. 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.30 Now having done these things you can feel that your patient 00:10:01.33\00:10:06.77 is going to have the very best chance of getting well, 00:10:06.80\00:10:10.41 persist in the treatment, don't feel that when the patient's 00:10:10.44\00:10:14.49 symptoms subside a bit your work is done, you must continue 00:10:14.52\00:10:19.31 as long as you continue to have blood or pus in the urine. 00:10:19.34\00:10:23.11 So just look at it and catch the urine in a clear glass 00:10:23.14\00:10:29.03 or a little jar and just look at it with the light, 00:10:29.06\00:10:32.33 and if it's cloudy then you are probably still having 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.61 white blood cells and puss in the urine, and germs 00:10:35.64\00:10:40.71 in the urine, so in this way you can help your patient 00:10:40.74\00:10:44.00 to get over pyelonephritis. 00:10:44.03\00:10:45.70 Now there is another problem with the kidneys that you need 00:10:45.73\00:10:49.61 to know something about, and that's kidney stones and 00:10:49.64\00:10:53.20 Dr. Don Miller will tell you something about kidney stones, 00:10:53.23\00:10:58.63 it must be the most exquisite pain that a person 00:10:58.66\00:11:01.46 ever experiences Dr. Miller. - Well, exquisite pain for sure 00:11:01.49\00:11:05.91 as a matter of fact if you never had one you don't know 00:11:05.94\00:11:08.71 unless you've had a baby, they say that passing the stone 00:11:08.74\00:11:13.34 is similar to having a baby. 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.04 So if you've had a baby you know what it must be like 00:11:15.07\00:11:18.10 to have a stone, well God be with you because it's a 00:11:18.13\00:11:23.07 miserable experience. 00:11:23.10\00:11:24.07 We have to understand that some people happen to be 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.23 stone formers, that doesn't mean that you are going to have 00:11:27.26\00:11:31.46 stones, it means that you have to be so much more careful 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.14 lifestyle because it's many lifestyle related things 00:11:34.17\00:11:37.77 that are going to cause the stones. 00:11:37.80\00:11:39.36 You can go to some parts of the world they don't have 00:11:39.39\00:11:41.31 kidney stones, it's because their lifestyles do not promote 00:11:41.34\00:11:44.54 kidney stones. 00:11:44.57\00:11:46.00 The symptoms of kidney stones are initially you have a 00:11:46.03\00:11:50.06 dull dragging from the lower part of the back towards 00:11:50.09\00:11:52.92 the front of the abdomen and that's a sign that you are 00:11:52.95\00:11:58.29 going to have some problems but you really get the 00:11:58.32\00:12:00.52 kidney stone when it's passed from the kidney into the ureter 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.36 now is when you have the big problems. 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.32 Excruciating pain at times blood and puss in the urine 00:12:05.35\00:12:11.75 all these are signs that you have a stone, you won't be 00:12:11.78\00:12:14.70 mistaken when you have one of those things because the 00:12:14.73\00:12:17.85 pain will tell you. 00:12:17.89\00:12:19.14 There are some things that you can do for it. 00:12:19.18\00:12:20.43 I had a friend one time that had a really bad kidney stone 00:12:20.46\00:12:25.75 attack, and whenever he would have one of these things 00:12:25.78\00:12:27.75 he would take a very warm bath. 00:12:27.78\00:12:29.63 We find that warmth has a tendency to be very analgesic, 00:12:29.66\00:12:33.26 to let the pain go away, it relaxes the vascular system 00:12:33.29\00:12:37.84 relaxes the ureters, allows the pressure to be taken off 00:12:37.87\00:12:42.04 and therefore a good relief was gained, 00:12:42.07\00:12:44.91 but that does not solve the problem. 00:12:44.94\00:12:47.03 Let's go back a minute and find out why do we get the 00:12:47.06\00:12:49.96 stones in the first place, there are various types 00:12:49.99\00:12:52.06 of stones, about 70- 80% of the stones are 00:12:52.09\00:12:55.24 calcium oxalate stones. 00:12:55.27\00:12:56.99 Basically the body is excreting calcium oxalate foods, 00:12:57.02\00:13:01.86 if a person is a stone former and they realize that their 00:13:01.89\00:13:04.95 stones are calcium oxalate they need to stay off of the 00:13:04.98\00:13:08.08 oxalate containing foods which are these: First of all 00:13:08.11\00:13:12.22 I recommend that we stay off of these foods that I am going 00:13:12.25\00:13:14.55 to mention this first group of foods all the time, 00:13:14.58\00:13:17.91 for any reason, these are the brown drink foods, your tea, 00:13:17.94\00:13:22.08 coffee, colas, and chocolate, these things are not fit for 00:13:22.11\00:13:26.77 human consumption, these things are high in oxalate 00:13:26.80\00:13:30.77 and they are going to cause you to loose calcium and 00:13:30.80\00:13:33.41 if you loose a lot of calcium then you are going to form 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.49 the stones. 00:13:35.52\00:13:36.49 There are other things, good foods like beet greens, 00:13:36.50\00:13:39.67 probably the highest oxalate food that there is Rhubarb, 00:13:39.70\00:13:43.53 Rhubarb is not the best food to take especially if you are 00:13:43.56\00:13:49.51 a stone former, citrus fruit is high in oxalates, grapes, 00:13:49.54\00:13:55.54 so there are some good foods that we have to stay away from. 00:13:55.57\00:13:59.29 Sweet potatoes is an oxalate food, now I am just talking 00:13:59.32\00:14:03.81 to you people who are stone formers who have formed 00:14:03.84\00:14:07.14 calcium oxalate stones. 00:14:07.17\00:14:09.73 Everyone else, these last few foods go ahead and enjoy them 00:14:09.76\00:14:13.66 as much as possible. 00:14:13.69\00:14:14.82 Figs, tomatoes, and plumbs, are high in oxalates, 00:14:14.85\00:14:19.41 if you are an oxalate former stay away from these. 00:14:19.44\00:14:22.09 The other ones are uric acid stones, people who have high 00:14:22.12\00:14:26.78 blood urea because they are high meat eaters or 00:14:26.81\00:14:29.93 dairy products, cheese, you are going to have a high 00:14:29.96\00:14:33.79 uric acid level and you are going to pass this to the 00:14:33.82\00:14:36.31 kidneys, it's going to crystallize, form a stone 00:14:36.34\00:14:39.87 and that's about 10% of the stones, so the cure there is 00:14:39.90\00:14:43.12 or at least wise the prevention is get off the meats, 00:14:43.15\00:14:46.17 that's the number one thing get off the meats and you 00:14:46.21\00:14:49.21 will probably not have the problem with those 00:14:49.24\00:14:51.06 particular stones, dairy products is always one of 00:14:51.09\00:14:54.61 those things that you need to leave off. 00:14:54.64\00:14:55.74 Stones normally form in middle aged men, women seem to get 00:14:55.77\00:15:01.81 gall stones, men seem to get kidney stones and it's usually 00:15:01.84\00:15:05.07 middle aged, not to say that you can't get them younger, 00:15:05.10\00:15:08.39 I've know young people with the stones, it is becoming 00:15:08.42\00:15:11.98 more and more common. 00:15:12.01\00:15:13.05 You see our lifestyles today are such that we're causing 00:15:13.08\00:15:16.48 our bodies to always be flushing calcium, we are told to take 00:15:16.51\00:15:21.47 take more calcium, but they don't tell us how to retain 00:15:21.50\00:15:25.66 the calcium that we are taking. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.13 First of all to retain your calcium take it in a more 00:15:27.16\00:15:30.51 bio-available form which is in your foods like greens 00:15:30.54\00:15:35.03 and fruits and vegetables, not in animal products, 00:15:35.06\00:15:37.71 these are not very kind to the body they like to dump right on 00:15:37.74\00:15:41.27 out of the body so stay away from those foods that do this. 00:15:41.30\00:15:45.77 Mineral loss of all types, we realize that the Para-thyroids 00:15:45.81\00:15:52.23 are monitoring your blood level of your calcium, and when the 00:15:52.26\00:15:56.05 calcium goes down in the blood it says look we have to bring 00:15:56.08\00:15:59.71 the calcium back up and so it sends to the bones to give up 00:15:59.74\00:16:02.97 some of it's calcium to go back into the blood, 00:16:03.00\00:16:05.44 but then if we have a high protein diet which causes 00:16:05.51\00:16:08.31 the calcium to go down through the kidneys it works all over 00:16:08.34\00:16:11.67 again, so besides having the kidney stones, 00:16:11.70\00:16:14.23 as a matter of fact American's lead the world in 00:16:14.26\00:16:16.53 kidney disease, we also lead the world in osteoporosis 00:16:16.56\00:16:19.66 we also lead the world in dairy and meat consumption 00:16:19.69\00:16:22.72 so maybe this is not so curative after all, that we do not need 00:16:22.75\00:16:27.08 these products. 00:16:27.11\00:16:28.08 Dehydration, people are just not hydrated, we are finding that 00:16:28.09\00:16:35.48 osteoporosis is becoming a childhood disease because of 00:16:35.51\00:16:38.54 the high soda intake which is high in phosphoric acid 00:16:38.57\00:16:42.46 the phosphoric acid also causes the calcium to flow out 00:16:42.49\00:16:46.18 of the body, the calcium concentrating in the kidneys 00:16:46.21\00:16:49.10 forming the stones and therefore we have the 00:16:49.13\00:16:52.09 kidney stone problem, so we need to get a diet that is 00:16:52.12\00:16:55.07 friendly, a kidney friendly diet, and water is the thing, 00:16:55.10\00:16:58.27 now there are some things that we can do to help us 00:16:58.30\00:17:00.16 to pass more water, things like watermelon seed tea. 00:17:00.19\00:17:03.38 In the summer time eat lots of watermelon it's a good 00:17:03.41\00:17:07.35 diuretic, and then as you are eating the watermelon 00:17:07.38\00:17:10.22 save the seeds, take the seeds grind them up and store them 00:17:10.25\00:17:15.11 in a glass jar for the wintertime when you can make 00:17:15.14\00:17:17.45 watermelon seed tea. 00:17:17.48\00:17:18.73 Also in the summer time eat lots of corn and save the silk 00:17:18.76\00:17:22.71 dry it, powder it, put it in a jar make corn silk tea, 00:17:22.74\00:17:26.61 these are very nice diuretics, help you diurese, pass a lot 00:17:26.64\00:17:32.09 of water, keep those kidneys clean, you have to flush those 00:17:32.12\00:17:35.64 kidneys, they filter about 50 gallons of water a day 00:17:35.67\00:17:40.11 or fluids a day, your blood is going through there, 00:17:40.14\00:17:43.09 lot's of things are going through, if you have good 00:17:43.12\00:17:46.02 quality of water in your system you will keep them clean 00:17:46.05\00:17:49.16 and the stones can not form. 00:17:49.19\00:17:51.31 Cranberry juice would be good to try to dissolve some of these 00:17:51.34\00:17:56.02 stones so we have a person go on either cranberry juice 00:17:56.05\00:17:59.69 or vitamin C supplementation to help make the urine 00:17:59.72\00:18:04.24 a little bit more acid to dissolve the stones. 00:18:04.27\00:18:06.31 You can make a potassium broth, take thick peelings of potatoes 00:18:06.34\00:18:11.76 along with onions, garlic, and carrots simmer this 00:18:11.79\00:18:15.49 for 30-40 min, make a broth and drink this about 3 or 4 00:18:15.52\00:18:20.04 glasses a day is a good thing to help with the stones. 00:18:20.07\00:18:24.14 There are certain herbs that you can take, licorice herb 00:18:24.17\00:18:27.87 is a good ureter relaxer, you realize that when you have this 00:18:27.90\00:18:31.85 stone passing down through the ureter, it's the pain of 00:18:31.88\00:18:35.25 pressure on the ureter itself that causes the pain. 00:18:35.28\00:18:39.35 We realize that some of these things don't have pain sensation 00:18:39.38\00:18:42.61 other than this distention, it's like the bowels, you can stick a 00:18:42.64\00:18:46.76 knife in them you won't feel it but if they get distended 00:18:46.79\00:18:49.35 by gas you have excruciating pain, so it's that stone 00:18:49.38\00:18:52.75 in there so the licorice will cause that to relax a bit and 00:18:52.78\00:18:57.80 take away some of the pain. 00:18:57.83\00:18:59.31 Horsetail tea, this is one that is quite popular in the 00:18:59.34\00:19:05.02 German countries, I have read some here in this country 00:19:05.05\00:19:08.57 we need to be more aware of the benefits of horsetail tea. 00:19:08.60\00:19:12.92 Parsley tea and Stinging Nettle, I was first introduced 00:19:12.95\00:19:18.05 to Stinging Nettle in Uchee Pines when I was walking 00:19:18.08\00:19:20.96 out in the woods and I sat down and happened to sit on a 00:19:20.99\00:19:23.72 Stinging Nettle and I found out why they call it 00:19:23.75\00:19:26.09 Stinging Nettle, but it also makes a very good tea, 00:19:26.13\00:19:28.44 very good for kidney stones, and there is various ways 00:19:29.62\00:19:33.10 I'm sure a lot of folk literature on 00:19:33.13\00:19:35.10 this and that's where we get 00:19:35.13\00:19:36.66 our simple remedies is from basically the folklore but 00:19:36.69\00:19:39.84 there is one way that I have read about and heard that it's 00:19:39.87\00:19:42.71 quite effective in dissolving the stones. 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.85 Basically here is what you do, you take between 3 quarts and 00:19:44.88\00:19:48.94 one gallon of hot water with lemon juice or cranberry juice 00:19:48.97\00:19:53.15 in it and you drink that for three days, that's what you are 00:19:53.18\00:19:56.14 doing, you are drinking a lot of water, hot water with 00:19:56.17\00:19:58.82 lemon juice or cranberry juice in there, on the third day you 00:19:58.85\00:20:01.82 take two ounces of olive oil, this may set yourself up to 00:20:01.85\00:20:06.39 pass that stone or to dissolve the stone. 00:20:06.42\00:20:09.76 But again the best way to take care of your kidney stones 00:20:09.79\00:20:13.36 is don't get them in the first place, get a good dietary that 00:20:13.39\00:20:16.33 will stay away from them and you won't have that 00:20:16.36\00:20:18.93 child birth feeling, especially for men, I don't think we 00:20:18.96\00:20:22.21 want to go through that experience, you have Dr. Thrash 00:20:22.24\00:20:25.88 do you think I want to go through that? 00:20:25.91\00:20:27.87 - I don't think so but I understand from those who 00:20:27.90\00:20:31.30 have had it that kidney stone is worse than having the baby. 00:20:31.33\00:20:36.48 It may be similar, but for those women who have had both 00:20:36.51\00:20:40.69 kidney stone and child birth they say that the kidney stone 00:20:40.72\00:20:44.41 is worse. 00:20:44.44\00:20:45.41 Those who have had heart attacks and stones say that the 00:20:45.42\00:20:48.76 heart attack is not as bad as the kidney stones, 00:20:48.79\00:20:53.34 it must be excruciating and I have seen people walking 00:20:53.37\00:20:57.23 up and down wringing their hands just waiting for 00:20:57.26\00:21:01.25 their shot of a narcotic, and there certainly is 00:21:01.28\00:21:04.35 justifiable if you can't control the pain in any other way 00:21:04.38\00:21:08.30 to have them take a narcotic. 00:21:08.33\00:21:10.95 Now some of the foods that you can eat I was glad to hear the 00:21:10.98\00:21:15.90 formula of the potato with the celery and carrots and 00:21:15.93\00:21:23.91 onion in it, I'm not sure that celery was mentioned but 00:21:23.94\00:21:26.57 celery should be in the soup that was given to people who 00:21:26.60\00:21:30.32 have kidney stones, and avocado, bananas, soy, 00:21:31.24\00:21:35.25 buckwheat, barley, oats and rice, 00:21:35.28\00:21:37.88 all of these are high in magnesium, they are 00:21:37.91\00:21:40.69 very good foods for a person with kidney stones to eat. 00:21:40.72\00:21:44.03 Then there are some excellent herbs they are good for any part 00:21:44.06\00:21:47.87 of the genito-urinary tract including the incontinence 00:21:47.90\00:21:51.41 that I'm going to talk about next, these herbs are dandelion, 00:21:51.44\00:21:55.34 that's a hot tea if it's for stones, use it as a hot tea 00:21:55.37\00:21:59.74 and golden rod hot tea, and the demulcent herbs, 00:21:59.77\00:22:04.84 these are all of those that soothe the body in some way 00:22:04.87\00:22:10.19 that would include marshmallow root, and slippery elm, 00:22:10.22\00:22:14.23 and a large number that are like that. 00:22:14.26\00:22:16.42 Couch grass and corn silk, all of those are demulcent herbs and 00:22:16.45\00:22:21.94 can be very helpful for the people who have the pain 00:22:21.97\00:22:25.59 of kidney stone. 00:22:25.62\00:22:26.59 Now incontinence is an involuntary loss of urine 00:22:26.60\00:22:31.48 either day or night, sometimes caused by urge and sometimes 00:22:31.51\00:22:37.73 caused by other things, some of the reasons why people have 00:22:37.76\00:22:43.05 incontinence one is that there has been retention 00:22:43.08\00:22:47.35 and there is overflow after the retention and that can be 00:22:47.38\00:22:50.98 from paralysis or from nerves or whatever, or delay in 00:22:51.01\00:22:56.12 answering the call to urinate, and whatever it may be if the 00:22:56.15\00:23:01.03 bladder has become so distended that it now sort of is paralyzed 00:23:01.06\00:23:07.41 and cannot empty itself, then you may just have overflow 00:23:07.44\00:23:11.41 incontinence from that, stenosis of the urethra which is the 00:23:11.44\00:23:18.94 tube that leads to the outside of the body, a stricture in that 00:23:18.97\00:23:22.41 can cause retention in the bladder and that can be most 00:23:22.44\00:23:27.46 uncomfortable once it happens. 00:23:27.49\00:23:30.22 Benign prostatic hypertrophy in men can cause 00:23:30.25\00:23:34.98 urinary retention and over distention followed by 00:23:35.01\00:23:39.12 incontinence and of course a spinal cord tumor or a spinal 00:23:39.15\00:23:43.70 cord injury can also cause retention of urine and then 00:23:43.73\00:23:48.69 with overflow incontinence. 00:23:48.72\00:23:50.64 Stress incontinence is probably one of the most distressing 00:23:50.67\00:23:54.90 because it can occur with coughing, giggling, laughing, 00:23:54.93\00:23:59.35 with any strong emotion, with crying, sneezing, 00:23:59.38\00:24:03.93 or lifting something, that can cause a great deal of 00:24:03.96\00:24:08.18 embarrassment for people and the incontinence that we get 00:24:08.21\00:24:11.73 with that is a little bit difficult to handle as well. 00:24:11.76\00:24:16.27 If there has been a prostatectomy, especially if 00:24:16.30\00:24:20.30 it's been a super pubic prostatectomy that can leave 00:24:20.33\00:24:23.96 the person with a damaged internal sphincter, 00:24:23.99\00:24:26.75 which is the muscle that holds the urine right at the bladder 00:24:26.78\00:24:30.73 neck or the external sphincter which is the little muscle 00:24:30.76\00:24:35.37 bundle that encircles the urethra to keep it from loosing 00:24:35.40\00:24:39.48 urine, you have more control over the external than you do 00:24:39.51\00:24:42.96 the internal which is largely controlled by psychological 00:24:42.99\00:24:46.56 factors and the pressures inside the bladder. 00:24:46.59\00:24:50.39 If you have those kinds of things then you can expect 00:24:50.42\00:24:55.37 that at times you may have incontinence. 00:24:55.40\00:24:57.96 Now as we get older, older women in particular who have had 00:24:57.99\00:25:02.67 multiple children, they tend to be more afflicted by 00:25:02.70\00:25:07.60 incontinence than younger women, and one of the 00:25:07.63\00:25:12.00 nice things that an older woman can do is the kegel exercises, 00:25:12.03\00:25:16.65 they are very simple to do and don't take much time 00:25:16.68\00:25:20.29 because a woman can do the exercise when she's riding 00:25:20.32\00:25:24.39 along or when she's sitting at her desk, or washing dishes, 00:25:24.93\00:25:27.73 or doing a number of other types of activities that don't 00:25:27.76\00:25:32.62 require a lot of thought. 00:25:32.65\00:25:34.30 Now the kegel exercises contracts the same muscles 00:25:34.33\00:25:39.68 that one would contract if one wants to 00:25:39.71\00:25:42.40 turn off the flow of urine when one 00:25:42.44\00:25:45.10 has begun to void, so if she begins to void and then stops 00:25:45.13\00:25:49.22 the flow of urine. 00:25:49.25\00:25:50.22 Pay attention to the muscles that are involved in that 00:25:50.23\00:25:54.49 process and then what she does after that is simply do a series 00:25:54.52\00:25:59.08 of ten three times she contracts holds it for three seconds 00:25:59.11\00:26:05.21 relaxes, three seconds more, relaxes, for ten times 00:26:05.24\00:26:09.29 and repeats that three times at that time, three sets of them 00:26:09.32\00:26:13.80 at one time. 00:26:13.83\00:26:15.08 Then another time of the day she does three more sets, 00:26:15.11\00:26:18.75 another time of the day she does three more sets for 00:26:18.78\00:26:21.39 a total of 90 contractions through the day and that's 00:26:21.42\00:26:26.15 the kegel exercise it's very simple to do, very effective, 00:26:26.18\00:26:30.72 but many women think that's so simple that couldn't 00:26:30.75\00:26:34.81 possibly help me with my serious problem, mine is much to serious 00:26:34.84\00:26:38.55 for that to be effective and so they don't even try it 00:26:38.58\00:26:41.67 and unfortunately because of that they may not get the 00:26:41.70\00:26:47.46 benefit that they require. 00:26:47.49\00:26:48.90 Now of course there are some psychological factors that 00:26:48.93\00:26:52.75 can cause incontinence but they are not very important for you 00:26:52.78\00:26:58.89 to know about, they require generally some kind of 00:26:58.92\00:27:02.02 professional help. 00:27:02.05\00:27:03.06 The last thing that I would like to talk about is that of 00:27:03.09\00:27:07.23 kidney failure, kidney failure is that of that happens when 00:27:07.26\00:27:11.36 at least 90% of the functioning units of the kidney have been 00:27:11.39\00:27:19.14 lost for one reason or other, they do require dialysis 00:27:19.17\00:27:22.96 of one kind or other, and the kind of diet that you have 00:27:22.99\00:27:27.80 can be a vegetarian diet, although most dialysis centers 00:27:27.83\00:27:32.56 don't have nutritionists who are knowledgeable enough to help 00:27:32.59\00:27:36.61 you with that but if you look carefully you will be able 00:27:36.64\00:27:39.20 to find a good diet that will work in harmony with 00:27:39.23\00:27:43.45 your dialysis. 00:27:43.48\00:27:44.62 Now these are a few of the problems that can occur with 00:27:44.65\00:27:50.15 the kidneys and the entire system, and we hope that our 00:27:50.18\00:27:53.86 discussion of it will be a great blessing to you. 00:27:53.89\00:27:57.34
