00:00:15.49\00:00:17.86 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:37.36\00:00:39.64 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:39.68\00:00:43.28 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:43.31\00:00:46.70 Some of men's health issues are of a serious nature. 00:00:46.73\00:00:51.97 I'd like to start out talking about one of those 00:00:52.00\00:00:55.57 and that's the subject of prostatitis. 00:00:55.60\00:00:58.46 Prostatitis can be of 2 kinds; 00:00:58.49\00:01:01.33 it can be acute, or it can be chronic. 00:01:01.36\00:01:04.15 The acute form can be really quite serious... 00:01:04.18\00:01:08.32 so that it can cause high fevers and chills, loss of appetite, 00:01:08.35\00:01:14.68 backaches, perineal pain, the floor of the pelvis 00:01:14.71\00:01:19.08 can be really quite severe... 00:01:19.11\00:01:22.65 And such a man may be actually prostrate, just so weak 00:01:22.68\00:01:27.75 and so sick that he can't get out of bed. 00:01:27.76\00:01:30.70 There are a number of things that can be done for him, 00:01:30.73\00:01:32.89 and he needs to work diligently on applying these 00:01:32.92\00:01:37.91 because if he's careful in applying them, 00:01:37.94\00:01:40.53 it will be less likely that he will get a chronic prostatitis. 00:01:40.56\00:01:44.79 Some men describe the hot, tender, very painful 00:01:44.82\00:01:52.44 prostate with acute prostatitis as being 00:01:52.47\00:01:55.63 a hot stone in the rectum, 00:01:55.66\00:01:58.59 and that certainly could be a way to describe it. 00:01:58.62\00:02:03.73 Now since there are a number of germs that can be involved 00:02:03.76\00:02:08.14 in acute prostatitis, we almost always get something like 00:02:08.18\00:02:12.52 the colon bacteria that are so common in the colon. 00:02:12.55\00:02:17.83 We almost always get those. 00:02:17.86\00:02:20.02 Sometimes we need to massage the prostate in order to get 00:02:20.05\00:02:24.16 secretions to culture... 00:02:24.19\00:02:25.53 But most of the time, if we just wait a day or so 00:02:25.56\00:02:28.90 we can get from the urine, the same bacteria, 00:02:28.93\00:02:33.72 even sometimes from the very beginning, 00:02:33.73\00:02:35.61 we can get the pathogenic bacterium that's causing 00:02:35.64\00:02:39.25 the problem with the prostate from the urine... 00:02:39.28\00:02:42.98 which means that we don't have to massage the prostate 00:02:42.99\00:02:46.53 which, by massaging, can release germs into the 00:02:46.56\00:02:50.50 bloodstream which could cause the germs 00:02:50.53\00:02:54.13 to go all over the body. 00:02:54.16\00:02:55.60 Of course, we're always concerned in people who have 00:02:55.63\00:02:58.72 some kind of heart problem, that if the germs 00:02:58.75\00:03:01.87 go all over the body, then the individual has the possibility 00:03:01.90\00:03:06.88 although it's not very great, but it is a possibility, 00:03:06.91\00:03:10.11 that they will grow on the abnormal place in the heart. 00:03:10.14\00:03:15.24 Now, with prostatitis, there are certain antimicrobials 00:03:15.27\00:03:20.73 that are of a herbal nature that I'd like to tell you about 00:03:20.76\00:03:24.66 Of course, everybody is familiar with goldenseal, and Echinacea 00:03:24.69\00:03:29.40 as herbal antimicrobial agents, and I can recommend these 00:03:29.43\00:03:34.72 for people who have acute prostatitis. 00:03:34.75\00:03:39.03 Garlic is another antimicrobial, along with elderberry. 00:03:39.06\00:03:43.41 Myrrh is a very good antimicrobial. 00:03:43.44\00:03:48.28 Calendula is very good for the prostate. 00:03:48.29\00:03:52.27 And, one that I like very much is also grapefruit seed extract. 00:03:52.30\00:03:57.65 It's a very good antimicrobial substance that can be 00:03:57.66\00:04:02.20 used in acute prostatitis. 00:04:02.21\00:04:05.70 Now if one is very careful to treat oneself during the 00:04:05.73\00:04:09.91 acute phase, then there is a much less likelihood 00:04:09.94\00:04:13.86 that it will go on to the chronic phase of prostatitis. 00:04:13.89\00:04:17.71 The chronic phase gives a little pain, 00:04:17.72\00:04:20.53 sometimes a little pus in the urine, 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.97 sometimes a little sense of fullness in the pelvic area, 00:04:23.00\00:04:29.47 and often, it just sort of subdues the man's sense of 00:04:29.50\00:04:34.42 well-being somewhat. 00:04:34.45\00:04:35.86 So we want to avoid that if it's at all possible. 00:04:35.89\00:04:38.89 Now along with prostatitis, there is another topic that 00:04:38.92\00:04:45.78 men often suffer from, and I have asked Dr. Don Miller 00:04:45.81\00:04:48.99 to talk with you about that one, and that is the subject of 00:04:49.02\00:04:52.53 impotence in men. 00:04:52.56\00:04:54.08 It's getting to be a more common problem, 00:04:54.11\00:04:57.42 and I think that some of the issues that are involved 00:04:57.45\00:04:59.75 would be well to discuss at this time... Dr. Miller 00:04:59.78\00:05:02.22 Okay... You know, I get my VFW magazine, 00:05:02.25\00:05:07.26 and in every issue, there will be a whole large page 00:05:07.29\00:05:11.09 advertisement for this particular problem 00:05:11.12\00:05:13.53 They usually either cause it impotence, 00:05:13.54\00:05:15.81 or erectile dysfunction. 00:05:15.84\00:05:18.11 And this is a major problem usually having to do with 00:05:18.14\00:05:21.68 a man when he gets a little bit older. 00:05:21.71\00:05:24.15 And, I would say, probably it's not so much a 00:05:24.18\00:05:27.62 problem of itself, although it is a problem, 00:05:27.65\00:05:29.72 but it's more of a symptom of another problem... 00:05:29.75\00:05:32.57 And there are some rather simple things you can try 00:05:32.60\00:05:36.23 to take care of this problem. 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.43 Basically, the thing is going to be a circulation problem 00:05:38.46\00:05:43.31 For some reason, the circulation of the blood down in that 00:05:43.34\00:05:46.90 part of the body has been somehow impaired, 00:05:46.93\00:05:50.04 and when you have the impairment of the blood flow, 00:05:50.07\00:05:52.40 you have impotence. 00:05:52.43\00:05:54.66 There are various things that keep us from having good 00:05:54.69\00:05:56.75 circulation, and some of them we've done other programs on 00:05:56.78\00:06:00.14 ...something like diabetes. 00:06:00.17\00:06:02.18 A person who is diabetic is far more likely to be impotent 00:06:02.21\00:06:05.78 than the person who is not diabetic. 00:06:05.81\00:06:07.71 And so what should you do? 00:06:07.74\00:06:09.35 You should do the things in your life that will keep you 00:06:09.38\00:06:11.88 from being diabetic... 00:06:11.91\00:06:13.62 Eating the right foods, getting the exercise... 00:06:13.65\00:06:17.16 But also, another thing that keeps us from having good 00:06:17.19\00:06:20.18 blood flow in any part of the body... 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.08 We're not just talking about impotence here, 00:06:22.09\00:06:23.73 we're talking about the whole body! 00:06:23.76\00:06:25.69 Let me go back to one of the foundational health principles 00:06:25.72\00:06:29.77 I always... whenever I teach health principles, 00:06:29.80\00:06:32.15 I teach 2 foundational principles... 00:06:32.18\00:06:34.21 #1 is the life is in the blood, but the second one is... 00:06:34.24\00:06:38.70 Perfect health requires perfect circulation. 00:06:38.73\00:06:41.93 Anything that impairs circulation is going to cause 00:06:41.94\00:06:44.39 us not to be as healthy as we could be... 00:06:44.42\00:06:46.44 which is the problem with impotence. 00:06:46.47\00:06:47.86 So, drinking more water... a person who is impotent 00:06:47.90\00:06:52.38 maybe the fact that they just don't drink water enough... 00:06:52.42\00:06:54.84 their blood is too viscous 00:06:54.87\00:06:55.97 and, therefore, they're not getting the good blood flow 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.43 in that part of the body. 00:06:58.46\00:06:59.60 Another thing can be... tobacco 00:07:00.50\00:07:02.81 We realize that tobacco damages peripheral blood circulation. 00:07:02.85\00:07:07.12 You'll see many people who are really hooked on the tobacco 00:07:07.15\00:07:10.80 and if they go there long enough, they start to have 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.50 amputations because they started losing the 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.60 circulation in their periphery. 00:07:15.64\00:07:17.34 ALCOHOL certainly can be a potent cause of impotence 00:07:17.38\00:07:21.68 ...that's a funny way of putting it... 00:07:21.71\00:07:22.87 "a potent cause of impotence" 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.34 So, we need to stay away from the alcohol. 00:07:24.37\00:07:26.19 As a matter of fact, anything stimulating along those lines 00:07:26.22\00:07:29.51 are bad for the prostate, bad for the impotence. 00:07:29.54\00:07:33.96 Another thing you need to do is make sure that 00:07:33.99\00:07:36.60 you stay away from over-stimulation. 00:07:36.63\00:07:39.05 A person sometimes is impotent because they have, 00:07:39.08\00:07:42.21 for SO long stayed so over-stimulated 00:07:42.24\00:07:45.38 in the sexual areas. 00:07:45.41\00:07:47.19 Basically, you're talking about people who are into 00:07:47.20\00:07:50.32 let's say pornography, in any of its forms 00:07:50.33\00:07:54.58 A person so wears out their apparatus, that it just 00:07:54.61\00:07:58.56 doesn't work anymore. 00:07:58.59\00:07:59.87 It's best to sit there, and make sure you have a pure mind. 00:07:59.90\00:08:03.25 I would recommend to a person who is impotent... 00:08:03.28\00:08:06.27 and I've ran into these people in India 00:08:06.30\00:08:08.71 I want them to stay completely away from anything stimulating 00:08:08.74\00:08:12.08 for at least a month. 00:08:12.11\00:08:13.41 Stay away from their wives... 00:08:13.44\00:08:14.72 Stay away from anything that might stimulate them 00:08:14.75\00:08:16.79 Keep their minds in a higher level, 00:08:16.82\00:08:18.63 and perhaps sometimes through this time-out, 00:08:18.66\00:08:22.27 your body can recover enough. 00:08:22.30\00:08:23.82 But then I also recommend the other things 00:08:23.85\00:08:25.50 ...keep the blood flowing well. 00:08:25.51\00:08:28.09 You can do things called hot and cold sitz baths 00:08:28.12\00:08:31.42 Basically, sitting in a contrast bath. 00:08:31.45\00:08:33.97 You sit in hot water for 3 minutes, 00:08:34.00\00:08:36.19 go into cold water for 30 seconds, back to hot water 00:08:36.22\00:08:39.09 for 3 minutes, 30 seconds into cold. 00:08:39.12\00:08:41.58 This vasoconstriction vasodilatation can help to 00:08:41.61\00:08:45.93 increase blood flow. 00:08:45.96\00:08:47.12 We have them do that for things 00:08:47.15\00:08:48.37 like arthritis to the hand, and other things. 00:08:48.41\00:08:50.62 It can work the same way in the pelvic area. 00:08:50.65\00:08:52.83 It's also good for the prostate while you're at it. 00:08:52.86\00:08:54.74 So doing the hot and cold sitz baths 00:08:54.77\00:08:57.18 would be very beneficial for the person having this problem. 00:08:57.21\00:09:01.22 There are certain herbs that a person could take 00:09:01.25\00:09:03.33 And, almost anything to do with the prostate, 00:09:03.36\00:09:05.58 saw palmetto berries is extremely good. 00:09:05.61\00:09:08.23 So I would recommend a person try saw palmetto berries, 00:09:08.26\00:09:11.89 because sometimes impotence... some people consider that 00:09:11.92\00:09:15.22 also along the lines of male infertility... 00:09:15.25\00:09:18.75 saw palmetto berries will help that. 00:09:18.78\00:09:21.13 Ginger will help that. 00:09:21.14\00:09:22.67 Dr. Thrash has mentioned ginger for the woman. 00:09:22.68\00:09:24.82 Ginger for the man could also be quite beneficial. 00:09:24.85\00:09:29.57 And then, I've read recently that people who are into 00:09:29.60\00:09:34.98 REALLY into bicycling, I mean getting on to the little 00:09:35.01\00:09:38.19 banana seats, and doing long term bicycling 00:09:38.22\00:09:41.27 they can become impotent because of the damage being done 00:09:41.30\00:09:44.75 to the vascular system leading into the area 00:09:44.78\00:09:49.17 that's under question here. 00:09:49.20\00:09:51.13 Also, any type of injury to that area. 00:09:51.16\00:09:53.23 You find many young people today out there playing 00:09:53.26\00:09:56.63 the soccer... They get kicked in the wrong places 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.74 THAT itself can lead to impotence in the future 00:09:58.77\00:10:01.85 because of damage to the vascular area. 00:10:01.88\00:10:04.03 So we need to protect EVERY part of our body, 00:10:04.06\00:10:07.15 and if you're concerned about impotence, protect that part 00:10:07.18\00:10:09.97 of your body. 00:10:10.00\00:10:11.49 Stay away from those little narrow seats. 00:10:11.52\00:10:14.06 Don't sit on hard surfaces. 00:10:14.09\00:10:15.86 You need good blood flow at all times 00:10:15.87\00:10:17.70 REMEMBER, perfect health requires perfect circulation 00:10:17.73\00:10:21.08 ...And that goes for your prostate, 00:10:21.11\00:10:22.55 that goes for EVERYTHING that you have, your eyes, 00:10:22.58\00:10:24.99 EVERYTHING needs to have good circulation. 00:10:25.02\00:10:26.90 I think as we keep the circulation going, Dr. Thrash, 00:10:26.93\00:10:29.15 we'll be a lot better off. Yes! 00:10:29.18\00:10:30.73 Now circulation is so important that it involves not only 00:10:30.76\00:10:35.33 the impotence thing, but it also involves infertility. 00:10:35.36\00:10:39.45 So if a man has impotence, it's probable that he will also 00:10:39.48\00:10:45.03 have infertility. 00:10:45.06\00:10:46.64 Now, infertility is fairly easy to study in a man, 00:10:46.67\00:10:51.53 not so with a woman. 00:10:51.56\00:10:53.36 It's much more difficult with women to study infertility, 00:10:53.39\00:10:56.56 but with men, usually a sample of the semen is 00:10:56.59\00:11:01.37 all that's needed and the answer is evident pretty shortly. 00:11:01.38\00:11:08.04 But there are some things about impotence that may be 00:11:08.07\00:11:11.55 correctible even surgically that a man should know about 00:11:11.58\00:11:15.37 and those are varicoceles, little tumors of the testes, 00:11:15.38\00:11:19.24 wearing tight pants, wearing tight shorts 00:11:19.27\00:11:24.13 ...taking hot baths as a regular thing. 00:11:24.14\00:11:28.64 A single hot bath can, after a few days, actually enhance 00:11:28.65\00:11:33.79 the production of spermatozoa, 00:11:33.80\00:11:36.38 but if these are regular, every day, every day, every day, 00:11:36.39\00:11:40.46 hot baths for 1/2 an hour to an hour, 00:11:40.49\00:11:43.70 then that can reduce the production of spermatozoa 00:11:43.73\00:11:47.85 and can make it so that the man is more or less impotent. 00:11:47.88\00:11:52.57 Then such things as smoking, and drinking... 00:11:52.60\00:11:55.18 they have their influence not only on impotence, 00:11:55.21\00:11:57.65 but also on infertility. 00:11:57.66\00:12:00.50 The influence of drugs is quite enormous; 00:12:00.53\00:12:03.01 that's even over-the-counter types of drugs. 00:12:03.04\00:12:05.64 These things can make so much of an influence on the man's 00:12:05.67\00:12:11.27 health, or on his fertility, that the couple can be infertile 00:12:11.30\00:12:16.97 Now a couple of things that don't directly deal with 00:12:16.98\00:12:21.02 infertility, but should be considered... 00:12:21.05\00:12:23.27 One is that it's child abuse to continue any kind of 00:12:23.30\00:12:30.63 indulgence that makes a problem in the prenatal area 00:12:30.64\00:12:35.36 for the child... such things as smoking. 00:12:35.39\00:12:38.41 A woman, and a man as well, because smoking in a man 00:12:38.44\00:12:42.21 can also involve the unborn child in an atmosphere 00:12:42.24\00:12:47.54 that makes it so that the child is less likely to be able to 00:12:47.57\00:12:50.56 develop a good blood vessel system. 00:12:50.57\00:12:53.82 And so, the man, as well as the woman, should not be 00:12:53.85\00:12:57.02 smoking during the pregnancy time, or ideally, for some time 00:12:57.05\00:13:01.74 PRIOR to the onset of the pregnancy. 00:13:01.77\00:13:06.16 And, the lifestyle does have a great influence on the 00:13:06.19\00:13:10.82 unborn child and should be carefully studied. 00:13:10.83\00:13:14.13 Probably the commonest affliction of older men 00:13:14.16\00:13:17.50 is that of benign prostatic hypertrophy. 00:13:17.53\00:13:20.23 This condition is not universal but nearly so, 00:13:20.24\00:13:25.73 as a man gets older... 00:13:25.76\00:13:27.17 And so, Dr. Miller is going to talk with you about some things 00:13:27.20\00:13:30.54 having to do with benign prostatic hypertrophy. 00:13:30.57\00:13:34.26 You know, sometimes when we study how not to get a disease 00:13:34.29\00:13:37.79 we like to study populations that don't have that disease. 00:13:37.82\00:13:40.90 If you want not to get osteoporosis, 00:13:40.93\00:13:44.03 find a population that does not get osteoporosis, 00:13:44.06\00:13:46.57 find out how they live... you won't get osteoporosis, 00:13:46.60\00:13:49.50 or at least-wise, you greatly lessen your opportunities 00:13:49.53\00:13:52.13 and your chances of getting osteoporosis. 00:13:52.16\00:13:54.45 So I read an interesting study not long ago about a 00:13:54.48\00:13:58.02 certain class that do not get prostate problems, 00:13:58.05\00:14:01.55 especially this one that Dr. Thrash has just mentioned 00:14:01.58\00:14:04.41 and that is "wild dogs" 00:14:04.44\00:14:06.99 Wild dogs are found not to have this enlargement 00:14:07.02\00:14:11.85 of the prostate. 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.67 But domestic dogs almost all have the enlargement 00:14:13.70\00:14:18.09 of the prostate... What's the difference? 00:14:18.12\00:14:20.36 Well, I've been down in Africa, and I've seen the wild 00:14:20.39\00:14:23.61 dogs, the real wild dogs. 00:14:23.62\00:14:25.12 And basically when a wild dog gets the urge, 00:14:25.15\00:14:28.01 the wild dog takes care of the urge. 00:14:28.04\00:14:30.51 But a domestic dog, locked up in that house all day long, 00:14:30.54\00:14:34.46 he feels the urge... saying, "I've really got to go to the 00:14:34.49\00:14:37.95 bathroom," but he remembers when he was 3 months old 00:14:37.98\00:14:41.09 having his nose pushed down into the carpet where he piddled 00:14:41.12\00:14:47.43 and being beat by a newspaper, and told... 00:14:47.46\00:14:49.51 "You've got to do it over here" 00:14:49.54\00:14:51.07 And that dog will hold itself the entire day long. 00:14:51.10\00:14:54.77 I remember I used to come home when I was a child, 00:14:54.80\00:14:57.63 and take our dog for a walk, and wondering why 00:14:57.66\00:14:59.80 that dog would go to the bathroom 27 times from 00:14:59.83\00:15:02.29 our house to the corner and back. 00:15:02.32\00:15:03.82 It's because that dog was retaining it's urine, 00:15:03.83\00:15:06.90 and the retention of the urine has been placed with 00:15:06.93\00:15:10.63 the problem with benign prostate hyperplasia, 00:15:10.66\00:15:13.81 or hypertrophy... however you want to put it. 00:15:13.82\00:15:16.25 And so, we need to make sure that when we get the urge 00:15:16.26\00:15:18.82 we go to the bathroom right then. 00:15:18.85\00:15:20.98 But we're in a society right now that we hold it, and we hold it, 00:15:21.01\00:15:24.18 and hold it, and it's the holding of it that's going 00:15:24.21\00:15:26.53 to cause lots of different types of problems. 00:15:26.56\00:15:33.31 Well, let's talk about what's causing this problem... 00:15:33.34\00:15:35.77 it's over-engorgement of the prostate on a regular basis. 00:15:35.80\00:15:39.38 Again this gets back to the point of over-stimulation 00:15:39.41\00:15:43.03 A person who continually keeps himself sexually aroused 00:15:43.04\00:15:48.54 will have an engorgement because basically, the prostate 00:15:48.57\00:15:51.80 is a part of the reproductive system. 00:15:51.83\00:15:54.18 It provides some of the fluids, that propels the semen, 00:15:54.21\00:15:58.49 and so it becomes engorged every time a man gets aroused. 00:15:58.52\00:16:03.35 It's sort of like a balloon... 00:16:03.38\00:16:04.73 You know, when you take a balloon, and you blow it up 00:16:04.76\00:16:08.36 for the first time, it's pretty tough to blow up 00:16:08.39\00:16:10.55 but every time you blow it, it gets a little bit easier. 00:16:10.58\00:16:13.55 And, it gets a little bit distended, 00:16:13.58\00:16:15.47 it sort of stays larger as you're doing this. 00:16:15.50\00:16:17.84 The same thing with the prostate. 00:16:17.87\00:16:20.31 The prostate is about the size of a walnut, 00:16:20.34\00:16:22.96 and basically, it's an organ that has a hole 00:16:22.99\00:16:27.31 through the middle through which the urethra comes. 00:16:27.34\00:16:29.51 And, when you start to get this engorgement, it swells. 00:16:29.54\00:16:34.53 Now when it swells, much like the appendix, 00:16:34.56\00:16:37.25 it swells out, and it swells in, and it pinches down, 00:16:37.28\00:16:41.75 and that's why many people who have this problem 00:16:41.78\00:16:43.90 have the process, or the problem of urgency... 00:16:43.93\00:16:47.47 They feel like they've got to go to the bathroom, 00:16:47.50\00:16:49.26 but they're not able to produce much urine. 00:16:49.29\00:16:51.34 They've got frequency because they're not voiding all the way 00:16:51.37\00:16:54.64 their bladder is staying full. 00:16:54.67\00:16:55.96 They have many, many trips to the bathroom, 00:16:55.97\00:16:58.24 but only void a small amount... 00:16:58.27\00:17:00.12 So the frequency and the urgency are signs that you've got 00:17:00.15\00:17:03.77 prostate problems. 00:17:03.80\00:17:04.95 So what can you do about this? 00:17:04.98\00:17:06.36 #1... Don't become over-stimulated all the time. 00:17:06.39\00:17:09.31 Stay away from those things that stimulate you, or arouse you. 00:17:09.34\00:17:12.83 ...they're very bad. 00:17:12.86\00:17:14.01 As a matter of fact, even taking stimulating foods, 00:17:14.04\00:17:16.70 spices, alcohol, taking tobacco, 00:17:16.73\00:17:20.25 ALL will affect that prostate gland. 00:17:20.28\00:17:22.25 It's in a very innocuous place, BUT it's down there where 00:17:22.28\00:17:25.77 it's going to get into some problems with your lifestyle. 00:17:25.78\00:17:28.67 You can also make sure that your blood flow is good... 00:17:28.70\00:17:31.98 keeping the blood less viscous by drinking plenty of water. 00:17:32.01\00:17:36.82 But there are some good things you can do to take care of it. 00:17:36.85\00:17:39.24 I've already mentioned... saw palmetto is probably 00:17:39.27\00:17:41.95 one of the best things you can do for the prostate. 00:17:41.98\00:17:45.01 Eating red and orange fruits and vegetables... extremely good 00:17:45.04\00:17:49.12 prostate food. 00:17:49.15\00:17:50.65 Zinc is a food that the prostate needs a lot of. 00:17:50.68\00:17:54.36 So where do you get the zinc? 00:17:54.37\00:17:55.49 Well, you can buy the little pills, but you can also 00:17:55.52\00:17:58.10 take things like popcorn, and you can take things like 00:17:58.13\00:18:01.24 pumpkin seeds both of which are very good forms of zinc. 00:18:01.27\00:18:04.71 And, there are other herbs that you can take, 00:18:04.74\00:18:08.56 and you can look up in a herb book, and try to find 00:18:08.59\00:18:11.20 some of these whatever herbs are available in your area. 00:18:11.23\00:18:13.76 Herbs that will help you diurese a little bit more 00:18:13.79\00:18:16.59 would also be good for the prostate. 00:18:16.62\00:18:18.28 And, trying to eliminate the congestion in the prostate area 00:18:18.31\00:18:22.36 I would recommend again the hot sitz baths... 00:18:22.37\00:18:24.74 sitting in the hot water, and in the cold water... 00:18:24.77\00:18:27.39 this fluxion of the water in and out. 00:18:27.42\00:18:29.42 Now, I've had patients before that needed, basically 00:18:29.45\00:18:32.06 on a daily basis, while they were under my care, 00:18:32.09\00:18:36.25 a prostate massage. 00:18:36.28\00:18:37.95 Basically, inserting a digit into the anus, 00:18:37.98\00:18:42.75 and then into the rectum, and massaging that prostate 00:18:42.78\00:18:46.38 to try to expel some of the fluid in there, 00:18:46.41\00:18:48.77 and we find that sometimes this is effective in lessening 00:18:48.80\00:18:52.52 the size of the prostate and letting it go down to where it's 00:18:52.55\00:18:57.06 not going to be such a problem with the rest of the body. 00:18:57.09\00:19:00.11 So those are some simple things you can do for the prostate. 00:19:00.14\00:19:02.84 Very simple, very nice things and recently, 00:19:02.87\00:19:06.23 there have been these probes that can be inserted into the 00:19:06.26\00:19:10.59 rectum that deliver heat, and that can help to soothe 00:19:10.60\00:19:15.89 the prostate and sometimes in acute prostatitis, 00:19:15.92\00:19:19.03 in chronic prostatitis, in benign prostatic hypertrophy, 00:19:19.06\00:19:23.13 and in cancer of the prostate, all of these conditions 00:19:23.16\00:19:27.43 will sometimes respond to the heated probe that 00:19:27.44\00:19:32.42 is now available on the market. 00:19:32.45\00:19:34.93 I'd like to talk to you a little bit about cancer of the 00:19:34.96\00:19:37.56 prostate in men. 00:19:37.59\00:19:38.63 This is a fairly common disorder in men, 00:19:38.64\00:19:43.22 and a moderately serious problem. 00:19:43.25\00:19:46.76 There are 2 general types of prostatic cancer... 00:19:46.77\00:19:50.78 One is a fast-growing type, and the other is a 00:19:50.81\00:19:53.67 very slow-growing type. 00:19:53.70\00:19:55.48 Generally, men in the Orient, in Asia, 00:19:55.51\00:20:00.56 they tend to have the slow-growing kind; 00:20:00.59\00:20:04.61 whereas, in the Western world, men generally tend to have 00:20:04.64\00:20:10.55 more the fast-growing type, or the faster-growing 00:20:10.56\00:20:14.21 than that in Asia. 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.55 An Asian man may get cancer of the prostate, 00:20:16.58\00:20:19.26 and may die of something else after 15 or 20 years of knowing 00:20:19.27\00:20:23.90 that he has cancer of the prostate. 00:20:23.93\00:20:25.44 So it grows very slowly... is what we might call 00:20:25.47\00:20:29.63 almost innocuous. 00:20:29.66\00:20:30.96 It CAN pickup speed, and eventually kill the man, 00:20:30.99\00:20:34.73 but most of the time in Asia, the disease is not 00:20:34.76\00:20:39.99 as rapid-growing as it is in the Western world. 00:20:40.02\00:20:42.98 Past the age of 65, the commonest cancer in man 00:20:43.01\00:20:48.57 is prostate cancer. 00:20:48.60\00:20:50.78 Now with proper treatment, most men can expect 00:20:50.81\00:20:53.80 ...or at least 65% of men, can expect that they can survive 00:20:53.83\00:20:58.05 10 years or more. 00:20:58.08\00:20:59.52 They may still have cancer of the prostate, 00:20:59.55\00:21:01.98 but it has been so slow-growing, and the treatment has been 00:21:02.01\00:21:08.53 the kind that can help a good bit with the prostate cancer. 00:21:08.56\00:21:12.71 If a man gets prostate cancer, he should study the kinds of 00:21:12.74\00:21:16.99 treatments that are available. 00:21:17.02\00:21:18.37 There are many different kinds, all the way from 00:21:18.40\00:21:21.03 natural treatments, to VERY high-tech types of treatment 00:21:21.06\00:21:25.23 for cancer of the prostate. 00:21:25.26\00:21:27.69 With most of these, or many of these, 00:21:27.72\00:21:30.23 he can expect a good 10-year survival rate 00:21:30.26\00:21:33.33 without serious problems with the cancer. 00:21:33.36\00:21:39.23 Now, an interesting feature about cancer of the prostate 00:21:39.26\00:21:42.11 is that it can metastasize quite widely throughout 00:21:42.14\00:21:46.88 a lot of the bones, the liver, and other areas, 00:21:46.89\00:21:50.36 and still not cause a lot of symptoms. 00:21:50.39\00:21:53.79 That's an interesting feature about cancer of the prostate. 00:21:53.82\00:21:57.10 The first cancer of the prostate that I ever saw, 00:21:57.13\00:21:59.96 when I was in medical school, was just such a cancer. 00:21:59.99\00:22:02.97 The man had metastases everywhere by the time he died. 00:22:03.00\00:22:07.31 And, he died at quite an OLD age. 00:22:07.34\00:22:10.14 As I recall, he was well into his 80s, and still had good 00:22:10.15\00:22:17.43 function and very few symptoms. 00:22:17.46\00:22:19.88 Now, what are the causes of cancer of the prostate? 00:22:19.91\00:22:22.81 Generally speaking, experts in this area will say that 00:22:22.84\00:22:26.31 we don't know what causes cancer of the prostate. 00:22:26.34\00:22:29.51 But inactivity is one of those things that we can feel pretty 00:22:29.54\00:22:33.14 certain is a problem with cancer of the prostate... 00:22:33.17\00:22:38.13 And some people feel that the massaging action of the 00:22:38.16\00:22:41.65 muscles of the pelvic floor, and the muscles of the 00:22:41.68\00:22:45.36 buttocks, may be a part of that that keeps the prostate 00:22:45.39\00:22:49.46 in very good health. 00:22:49.49\00:22:51.49 We know, also, that a high fat diet, a diet high in animal 00:22:51.52\00:22:56.78 products... these are also likely to be a part of 00:22:56.81\00:23:00.19 what we can consider could be a part of the cause 00:23:00.22\00:23:05.03 of prostate cancer. 00:23:05.06\00:23:06.96 Now from a natural standpoint, there are a number of things 00:23:06.99\00:23:09.79 that will enhance the treatment of cancer of the prostate, 00:23:09.82\00:23:13.93 and many of these are what can be called "hormone modulators" 00:23:13.96\00:23:18.23 There are a number of herbal-types of hormone 00:23:18.26\00:23:22.06 modulators, and the best known of these for men is 00:23:22.09\00:23:26.31 saw palmetto berry. 00:23:26.34\00:23:29.12 This herb has a very good ability to inhibit the 00:23:29.15\00:23:38.85 functioning of 5-alpha-reductase which, of course, then gives it 00:23:38.88\00:23:43.44 some inhibition of the growth of prostate cancer. 00:23:43.47\00:23:47.10 Now, there are also some antineoplastic herbs 00:23:47.13\00:23:54.61 and one of those is soy. 00:23:54.64\00:23:58.57 I'm very interested in the new research that's going on 00:23:58.58\00:24:02.02 in many university centers about soy. 00:24:02.05\00:24:06.56 And, one of things that we know about soy is that it has 00:24:06.59\00:24:11.10 antineoplastic properties. 00:24:11.13\00:24:14.06 We know that breast cancer is definitely inhibited by the 00:24:14.09\00:24:19.67 various constituents of soy. 00:24:19.70\00:24:22.38 Some of these constituents, the most common is 00:24:22.41\00:24:25.76 isoflavone, but then in addition to isoflavones, 00:24:25.79\00:24:30.08 there are some others like protease inhibitors, 00:24:30.11\00:24:33.64 and saponins, and inositol phosphohexate... 00:24:33.67\00:24:38.08 all of these are constituents of soybeans that make them 00:24:38.11\00:24:42.86 very beneficial as an antineoplastic agent. 00:24:42.89\00:24:47.59 Now, in addition to the soy, there are other antineoplastic 00:24:47.62\00:24:53.73 or anticancer types of foods, such as flaxseed. 00:24:53.76\00:24:59.15 Now the isoflavones are largely responsible in soy, 00:24:59.18\00:25:02.78 but the lignans are responsible in flaxseed 00:25:02.81\00:25:07.06 for the antimalignancy, or antineoplastic factors, 00:25:07.09\00:25:12.46 and they are phytoestrogens, just like the isoflavones, 00:25:12.47\00:25:17.93 but they work in a slightly different way. 00:25:17.96\00:25:20.47 So, if one mixes both flaxseed and soybeans, and it is soyBEANS 00:25:20.50\00:25:25.24 I prefer the soybeans to any kind of product made 00:25:25.27\00:25:28.42 from soybeans when we were treating cancer, 00:25:28.45\00:25:31.56 or treating any other kind of serious problem. 00:25:31.59\00:25:34.57 So I'd use the flaxseed freshly ground... 00:25:34.60\00:25:37.55 Don't grind a quart of flaxseed and put that in the refrigerator 00:25:37.58\00:25:42.05 even in a dark jar... 00:25:42.08\00:25:43.62 Just wait until the very time that you're ready to eat them 00:25:43.65\00:25:46.79 and then grind the flaxseed. 00:25:46.80\00:25:49.49 With flaxseed, the androgen levels fall. 00:25:49.52\00:25:52.73 Now androgens are male sex hormones, 00:25:52.76\00:25:55.96 and we know for certain that male sex hormones are 00:25:55.97\00:25:59.57 involved in the production of benign prostatic hypertrophy 00:25:59.60\00:26:03.22 and prostate cancer. 00:26:03.25\00:26:06.68 There are a number of other hormone modulators 00:26:06.71\00:26:10.53 in the herbal world, and I'd just like to 00:26:10.56\00:26:13.89 read you a list of some of these... 00:26:13.92\00:26:17.26 Licorice is one of those. 00:26:17.29\00:26:19.06 The glycyrrhiza compounds in licorice root 00:26:19.09\00:26:24.00 makes it so that it's a very good antineoplastic, 00:26:24.03\00:26:28.87 and hormone modulator which can be beneficial in 00:26:28.90\00:26:32.70 cancer of the prostate. 00:26:32.73\00:26:34.41 Skullcap, Asian and American ginseng, both of them 00:26:34.44\00:26:38.86 are very helpful. 00:26:38.89\00:26:40.70 Chaste tree, which we usually think of in dealing with women's 00:26:40.73\00:26:44.56 problems, but chaste tree is also EXTREMELY good 00:26:44.59\00:26:47.52 for men with prostate cancer. 00:26:47.55\00:26:50.22 ...Partridgeberry, false unicorn and vitamin D. 00:26:50.25\00:26:56.09 Vitamin D is almost always low in men who have 00:26:56.12\00:27:01.21 cancer of the prostate. 00:27:01.24\00:27:03.09 So, take a good dose of vitamin D as a supplement 00:27:03.12\00:27:07.57 and that can be helpful in cancer of the prostate. 00:27:07.60\00:27:10.21 Now, anything that will boost the immune system in a man 00:27:10.24\00:27:14.82 with cancer of the prostate is quite helpful. 00:27:14.85\00:27:17.89 Exercise, hydrotherapy... that means hot baths, 00:27:17.92\00:27:22.36 or this probe that I was mentioning, can be helpful. 00:27:22.39\00:27:26.51 And, of course, Echinacea is very good. 00:27:26.54\00:27:30.15 Eupatorium, Venus flytrap, comfrey, and we don't recommend 00:27:30.18\00:27:34.62 taking comfrey more than 3 months at one stretch 00:27:34.65\00:27:38.70 because of the possibility, I'm not sure that it's a probability 00:27:38.73\00:27:42.25 but the possibility of some kind of liver damage. 00:27:42.28\00:27:45.76 And then astragalus, ashwagandha, zinc and selenium. 00:27:45.79\00:27:52.15 Now, I hope with this very brief discussion, 00:27:52.18\00:27:54.97 that you have received some information that will help you 00:27:55.00\00:27:58.11 with prostate cancer 00:27:58.15\00:27:59.57 and all other men's problems. 00:27:59.60\00:28:01.63
