When an obstetrician engages a patient for 00:00:01.98\00:00:06.32 the prenatal period, he has at least 2 patients... 00:00:06.35\00:00:09.95 the woman, and the unborn child. 00:00:09.98\00:00:13.06 Ideally, there should be more people involved than that 00:00:13.09\00:00:16.75 in the patient's care 00:00:16.78\00:00:18.21 ...the father of the child, sometimes the grandmother, 00:00:18.24\00:00:21.09 and the grandfather, and other siblings... 00:00:21.12\00:00:23.27 So it's quite a group of people who are involved in 00:00:23.30\00:00:26.93 1- patient care. 00:00:26.96\00:00:28.61 To get all the things that a prenatal program requires, 00:00:28.64\00:00:34.23 requires some study, and so we hope that you will be 00:00:34.26\00:00:37.52 with us as we make a study on this subject 00:00:37.55\00:00:39.85 during this program. 00:00:39.88\00:00:40.85 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:01:00.90\00:01:03.41 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:01:03.44\00:01:06.86 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:01:06.89\00:01:10.70 A prenatal program comes at a very receptive time 00:01:10.73\00:01:14.19 in the life of a woman. 00:01:14.22\00:01:15.29 Most of the time, if you talk with a woman 00:01:15.32\00:01:18.49 about changes in her lifestyle, she will do almost anything 00:01:18.52\00:01:22.06 She wants to have the very best program possible 00:01:22.09\00:01:25.61 for the unborn child, and she wants to ensure that her own 00:01:25.64\00:01:29.34 health will be good after the baby is born. 00:01:29.37\00:01:32.17 So, whatever reforms you think you could make in the 00:01:32.20\00:01:36.05 entire family, NOW is the time to do it. 00:01:36.08\00:01:39.16 So, the obstetrician, or the midwife can use this 00:01:39.19\00:01:44.04 GOLDEN opportunity to make certain that there are changes 00:01:44.07\00:01:47.71 in that family, so that these changes in lifestyle can spread 00:01:47.74\00:01:51.97 to a community. 00:01:52.00\00:01:53.48 And in this way, much good can be done that would otherwise 00:01:53.49\00:01:56.81 be missed at the most favorable time. 00:01:56.84\00:01:59.27 Let's start with diet... 00:01:59.30\00:02:01.59 Diet is a very basic thing, and most pregnant women 00:02:01.62\00:02:05.71 believe that diet is something that they should control 00:02:05.72\00:02:09.36 very carefully, and so they're willing to listen 00:02:09.39\00:02:13.03 to any kind of prenatal program that you're wishing 00:02:13.06\00:02:16.34 to establish in that family. 00:02:16.37\00:02:18.61 And, the first thing is an abundant diet. 00:02:18.64\00:02:23.76 At any time that a woman is restricting her diet, 00:02:23.79\00:02:27.93 she may cut out whole classes of foods. 00:02:27.96\00:02:31.53 She may cut out all breads, all sugars, all fats. 00:02:31.54\00:02:37.43 She may cut out all nuts. 00:02:37.46\00:02:39.41 And just with a big sweep, she just cuts out things that 00:02:39.44\00:02:43.79 she knows to be fattening. 00:02:43.82\00:02:45.32 But, this is not the time to make those sweeping changes 00:02:45.35\00:02:50.45 in a person's diet. 00:02:50.48\00:02:52.29 What you need to do if you're pregnant, 00:02:52.32\00:02:54.66 is to know that you're eating for 2 people, and 00:02:54.69\00:02:58.75 therefore, you need to eat enough for your own maintenance 00:02:58.78\00:03:01.15 needs, as well as for the growth of the baby. 00:03:01.16\00:03:03.81 The baby is going to grow from just a fraction of an ounce 00:03:03.84\00:03:09.11 to several pounds by the time of birth. 00:03:09.14\00:03:12.22 To make this growth, the baby needs an abundance of 00:03:12.25\00:03:15.87 nutrients supplied by the mother. 00:03:15.88\00:03:18.40 Now the mother's diet should have fruits, vegetables, 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.95 whole grains, nuts and seeds. 00:03:21.98\00:03:24.72 Now these are basic to all women. 00:03:24.75\00:03:26.94 It's the most favorable diet that a woman can have 00:03:26.97\00:03:30.09 to have those items in her diet. 00:03:30.12\00:03:33.06 Anything else that she adds besides fruits, vegetables, 00:03:33.09\00:03:36.95 whole grains, nuts and seeds, ANYTHING else that she adds 00:03:36.98\00:03:40.79 is either superfluous, or may not be the best thing. 00:03:40.82\00:03:45.67 Now, what can we say about other things that could be added 00:03:45.68\00:03:50.05 Heavy sweets... for some reason many women CRAVE 00:03:50.08\00:03:55.71 heavy sweets during pregnancy. 00:03:55.75\00:03:57.28 Very salty foods... again, some women CRAVE very salty foods. 00:03:57.32\00:04:02.28 Very highly spiced foods... some women crave those things, 00:04:02.31\00:04:06.20 and some women are just repulsed by the very thought 00:04:06.23\00:04:09.19 of eating something that's highly spiced. 00:04:09.22\00:04:11.18 So the whims of the appetite, get to be a prominent thing 00:04:11.21\00:04:14.88 during pregnancy. 00:04:14.91\00:04:16.15 A woman has a craving for this, or she has an aversion to that, 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.43 so she may leave out some very good foods, and take some 00:04:19.46\00:04:23.81 that are not good for either her, or for the baby. 00:04:23.84\00:04:26.51 What are some of those foods that are not good? 00:04:26.54\00:04:30.95 Things like ice cream, those should be avoided, 00:04:30.98\00:04:34.41 unless the ice cream is made from something very healthful. 00:04:34.42\00:04:37.38 A banana ice cream can be substituted for the heavy 00:04:37.39\00:04:40.98 and unhealthful forms of commercial ice cream 00:04:41.01\00:04:44.14 that are often available. 00:04:44.17\00:04:45.31 And by doing so, she can improve her general nutrition 00:04:45.34\00:04:50.94 and also satisfy her appetite a bit. 00:04:50.97\00:04:54.65 How does one make a nice banana ice cream? 00:04:54.68\00:04:57.54 Well, it's very easy. 00:04:57.58\00:04:58.58 Get a nice ripe banana, peel it, freeze it. 00:04:58.62\00:05:02.63 Then if you want to make it in a blender, 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.74 you can cut it into a number of pieces, maybe 8 or 10 pieces 00:05:04.77\00:05:08.98 ...put it in the blender along with some pineapple juice, 00:05:09.01\00:05:12.99 or other kind of sweet, fruit juice, and blend that 00:05:13.02\00:05:16.84 until it's about the consistency of soft-serve ice cream 00:05:16.85\00:05:20.58 and then it's very delightful! 00:05:20.61\00:05:22.79 It can be eaten with a waffle, or just on hard toast 00:05:22.82\00:05:26.52 ...hard, whole wheat toast 00:05:26.55\00:05:28.14 And it's a remarkably delightful dessert, 00:05:28.17\00:05:31.55 and is just made of fruit. 00:05:31.58\00:05:34.14 She can, if she would like, add to the banana something 00:05:34.17\00:05:38.35 like a few blueberries, or a few strawberries, 00:05:38.38\00:05:41.43 and she's got strawberry ice cream, or blueberry ice cream, 00:05:41.46\00:05:45.59 or any other kind of fruit... peach ice cream, 00:05:45.62\00:05:48.22 just any kind of frozen fruit can be added at that time 00:05:48.25\00:05:51.82 and blended up nicely, and you've got a good ice cream. 00:05:51.85\00:05:56.95 Now, the Champion Juicer can also be used as that thing 00:05:56.98\00:06:02.52 that you use to make the ice cream... 00:06:02.55\00:06:05.77 Of course, it's the champion maker of ice cream. 00:06:05.80\00:06:09.98 I have a Champion Juicer for that very purpose. 00:06:10.01\00:06:13.04 In the south, on a hot day, sometimes very pleasant 00:06:13.07\00:06:17.24 to have a small dish of some kind of ice cream. 00:06:17.27\00:06:21.83 Banana makes up the very creamiest ice cream 00:06:21.86\00:06:24.83 of all the fruits, and so I always use the banana 00:06:24.86\00:06:27.92 as a base for making the ice cream, and add the more 00:06:27.93\00:06:32.35 icy fruits, and crumbly fruits to the banana, 00:06:32.38\00:06:36.41 so that it can be aerated, and creamy, 00:06:36.44\00:06:39.06 and taste very good, and have a good consistency. 00:06:39.09\00:06:42.30 Now in addition to the very heavy sweets, heavy fats 00:06:42.31\00:06:47.90 and heavy salty things also tend to be 00:06:47.93\00:06:50.90 those things that women crave. 00:06:50.93\00:06:52.68 They may crave chips. 00:06:52.71\00:06:53.85 They may crave unhealthful, very salty pickles. 00:06:53.88\00:06:57.98 Or unhealthful, very salty, very fatty, hot dogs. 00:06:57.99\00:07:03.28 And, all of these kinds of things are unhealthful for her. 00:07:03.29\00:07:07.55 One study done a few years ago, showed that if a woman 00:07:07.58\00:07:11.03 ate a lot of hot dogs during pregnancy, 00:07:11.06\00:07:13.66 that her offspring was more likely to develop a brain cancer 00:07:13.69\00:07:18.72 in the future, so we just recommend that those 00:07:18.75\00:07:22.65 are refuse meats anyway, so that hot dogs just not 00:07:22.68\00:07:26.51 be taken ever, but especially not during pregnancy. 00:07:26.54\00:07:30.27 Now with the diet, we need to understand also the times 00:07:30.30\00:07:34.98 of day that one would eat. 00:07:35.01\00:07:37.01 Normally, we recommend a 2- meal plan for women 00:07:37.04\00:07:41.96 and for men as well, but especially for women since they 00:07:41.99\00:07:45.63 tend to get overweight more readily. 00:07:45.66\00:07:47.87 Two meals a day represents the ideal number of meals 00:07:47.90\00:07:53.09 for a human being. 00:07:53.12\00:07:54.45 But during pregnancy, because the entire digestive tract is 00:07:54.48\00:07:58.83 slowed down, we usually recommend the third meal. 00:07:58.86\00:08:03.13 It should be a small meal... 00:08:03.16\00:08:04.99 something like bread and fruit, and she should be able 00:08:05.02\00:08:09.05 to gain weight properly with that, and also to be 00:08:09.08\00:08:11.85 quite satisfied with her meals. 00:08:11.86\00:08:13.91 There are BIG changes in a mother's body during this time. 00:08:13.94\00:08:20.04 and the gastrointestinal tract is one of those organs 00:08:20.07\00:08:23.14 making these big changes. 00:08:23.17\00:08:24.77 We can understand why when we consider the fact 00:08:24.80\00:08:27.58 that certain hormones in a woman's body are 00:08:27.61\00:08:31.20 50 thousand times higher in pregnancy, than they are 00:08:31.23\00:08:35.69 in the unpregnant state... 00:08:35.72\00:08:36.99 So, she's making quite enormous changes 00:08:37.02\00:08:40.28 in her body's mielur? and to keep up with this 00:08:40.31\00:08:46.31 she needs to make certain changes in her lifestyle. 00:08:46.34\00:08:49.14 The emotional state is one of those important areas 00:08:49.17\00:08:53.45 where she needs to pay close attention... 00:08:53.48\00:08:56.72 and Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with us about 00:08:56.75\00:09:00.60 the emotional states of women during pregnancy 00:09:00.63\00:09:04.33 and what can be done to help control that... Dr. Miller 00:09:04.36\00:09:07.69 Thank you so much... 00:09:07.73\00:09:08.77 You know, a woman who is pregnant, as Dr. Thrash is 00:09:08.80\00:09:12.44 explaining, is carrying a precious bundle within her... 00:09:12.47\00:09:15.55 And whatever the woman has going on in her body 00:09:15.58\00:09:18.46 will be going on in the child's body in many ways. 00:09:18.49\00:09:21.56 She talks about this great influx of hormones; 00:09:21.59\00:09:25.25 well, the hormones and other emotional things that are 00:09:25.28\00:09:28.90 going on in a woman's body passes into the child 00:09:28.93\00:09:31.35 and her mental state is extremely important 00:09:31.38\00:09:34.57 during the time of her pregnancy. 00:09:34.60\00:09:36.39 If a woman is happy, if she is just cool during 00:09:36.42\00:09:41.55 the whole time of her pregnancy, the child, itself, 00:09:41.58\00:09:44.46 when the child is born will seem to have the same nature. 00:09:44.49\00:09:47.35 But if the woman is agitated, and if she's unhappy, 00:09:47.36\00:09:50.36 if she's combative, if she's battled by her husband, 00:09:50.39\00:09:54.01 all these different things... 00:09:54.04\00:09:55.74 Because basically when a woman is going through the pregnant 00:09:55.77\00:09:57.88 period, there are changes going on, 00:09:57.91\00:10:00.11 and the husband, sometimes, is not in tune with these things... 00:10:00.14\00:10:03.41 And, his treatment of the wife has a profound effect 00:10:03.44\00:10:06.11 upon the baby once that baby is born. 00:10:06.14\00:10:07.96 You know, you see examples, once of the examples 00:10:07.99\00:10:11.61 that I like to think about is in the Bible 00:10:11.64\00:10:13.24 Let's over here to 2 Chronicles 23 00:10:13.25\00:10:17.87 I find this an interesting study. 00:10:17.90\00:10:19.79 As you study down through the kinds of Israel and Judah, 00:10:19.82\00:10:23.07 it almost always mentions something significant 00:10:23.10\00:10:26.44 Here in the first verse, chapter 23, 00:10:26.47\00:10:28.84 Amaziah was 20 and 5 years old when he began to reign 00:10:28.87\00:10:32.82 and he reigned 20 and 9 years in Jerusalem... 00:10:32.85\00:10:35.38 And then the next thing is very significant... 00:10:35.41\00:10:38.21 "... and his mother's name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. " 00:10:38.24\00:10:44.84 And then the next statement always follows, whenever 00:10:44.87\00:10:48.03 it talks about the mother, it says something else about 00:10:48.06\00:10:51.16 the child... It says, "... and he did that which was 00:10:51.19\00:10:54.09 right in the sight of the Lord, and did it with a perfect heart" 00:10:54.12\00:11:01.02 It was the fact that in his mother's womb, and under her 00:11:01.05\00:11:05.32 tutelage, as he was growing up, the Lord was with him 00:11:05.35\00:11:08.99 because the Lord with the mother. 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.18 And so the mother needs to be very sure and very clear 00:11:11.21\00:11:14.09 that when she's raising that child in her womb, 00:11:14.12\00:11:16.60 that she's giving it the very best environment that she can. 00:11:16.63\00:11:20.34 What she listens to, what she sees, what she even thinks 00:11:20.37\00:11:24.91 in her mind, will have an effect upon that baby. 00:11:24.94\00:11:27.58 You know, the baby, upon the point of conception, 00:11:27.61\00:11:31.36 is a human being... 9 months from being born, 00:11:31.39\00:11:35.05 but it's as much a human, as you and I are human, 00:11:35.08\00:11:37.46 as far as I'm concerned... 00:11:37.49\00:11:38.80 And EVERYTHING that goes on in that mother 00:11:38.83\00:11:40.78 is transferred to the baby, 00:11:40.81\00:11:42.27 so we need to be very careful... Dr. Thrash 00:11:42.30\00:11:44.73 Yes... Very good. 00:11:44.76\00:11:46.06 The clothing of the mother also needs to be carefully 00:11:46.09\00:11:49.27 designed... it should be loose, and it should be warm 00:11:49.28\00:11:52.48 Those 2 features are the major features of the 00:11:52.51\00:11:56.07 clothing of the mother. 00:11:56.10\00:11:57.42 No tight bands anywhere... not around any of the 00:11:57.45\00:12:00.45 extremities; especially not on the legs 00:12:00.48\00:12:03.16 or above or below the knees. 00:12:03.19\00:12:06.27 Not around the ankles because the circulation is also not as 00:12:06.30\00:12:10.40 brisk during that time. 00:12:10.43\00:12:11.92 Then warmth, because of the fact that the extremities 00:12:11.95\00:12:15.79 need to be nicely warm so that the circulation 00:12:15.82\00:12:20.67 to the trunk can also be very nicely balanced. 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.63 So warm and loose clothing... we need to be very careful of 00:12:24.66\00:12:30.31 for the pregnant woman. 00:12:30.34\00:12:31.92 Tests have shown that cold feet will reduce the circulation 00:12:31.95\00:12:37.42 to the pelvic organs, and we could assume that that would 00:12:37.45\00:12:41.57 also include the placenta. 00:12:41.58\00:12:44.07 So with a reduced circulation to the placenta, 00:12:44.10\00:12:46.66 the nutrients that would get to the baby 00:12:46.67\00:12:49.76 would also be diminished. 00:12:49.79\00:12:51.61 Now, water for the pregnant woman needs to be abundant. 00:12:51.64\00:12:56.59 The baby is surrounded by a sac of water, 00:12:56.62\00:13:01.60 and the mother's body is also laying in a store of water, 00:13:01.63\00:13:05.67 ...so that at the time of the birth of the baby, 00:13:05.70\00:13:08.45 she can release this water which is now in the form of 00:13:08.48\00:13:12.31 blood serum, or blood plasma... 00:13:12.32\00:13:14.42 And at that time, she can release this extra fluid which 00:13:14.45\00:13:18.50 which can wash out some of the products of conception 00:13:18.53\00:13:22.09 from the uterus, and thereby, cleanse the uterus of these 00:13:22.12\00:13:26.23 products and blood and membranes that might otherwise be retained 00:13:26.26\00:13:31.13 These can be nicely washed out. 00:13:31.16\00:13:34.60 And also, she has in her body fluid that can be put into the 00:13:34.63\00:13:40.83 bloodstream to give her essentially a transfusion. 00:13:40.86\00:13:45.01 So, if she loses some blood during the time of the 00:13:45.04\00:13:48.09 birth of the baby, she has this little transfusion of extra 00:13:48.13\00:13:53.35 fluid in her blood vessel system so that it makes it so that 00:13:54.66\00:13:58.87 she is in much better health than she could otherwise be. 00:13:58.88\00:14:02.48 Now what about the rest that a woman needs during pregnancy? 00:14:02.51\00:14:06.43 Certainly during the nighttime hours, she needs a good, full 00:14:06.46\00:14:12.36 8 hours sleep, and at other times during the day, 00:14:12.39\00:14:16.60 she may also need a nap. 00:14:16.63\00:14:18.45 But, the nap should preferably 00:14:18.48\00:14:20.29 come before the meal, rather than after the meal. 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.29 So before lunch, or before the little supper that she should 00:14:23.32\00:14:27.32 take, she should take a nap... 00:14:27.35\00:14:29.42 maybe 10, 15, 20 minutes. 00:14:29.43\00:14:31.76 Such a nap will refresh her enormously, 00:14:31.79\00:14:35.81 and also make her better able to take care of those 00:14:35.84\00:14:39.74 internal changes that are going on with her. 00:14:39.77\00:14:43.64 The mental health of the mother needs to be carefully guarded 00:14:43.68\00:14:48.78 because she is going to give a legacy to her offspring 00:14:48.81\00:14:53.17 of those emotions that she experiences during her pregnancy 00:14:53.20\00:14:57.88 Now consider this fact, during her pregnancy, at various times, 00:14:57.89\00:15:03.41 during the pregnancy, she's going to be 00:15:03.44\00:15:06.81 putting neurohormones into the bloodstream, 00:15:06.84\00:15:10.76 her own bloodstream, because of thoughts she has had... 00:15:10.79\00:15:14.77 If a person is angry, if they are irritated, 00:15:14.80\00:15:17.98 if they are lonely, or sad, or angry, or oppressed 00:15:18.01\00:15:22.72 by the husband, or if she is fearful, 00:15:22.75\00:15:26.76 whatever her emotional state, she'll be putting neurohormones 00:15:26.79\00:15:30.62 into the bloodstream that reflect her state of mind. 00:15:30.65\00:15:37.06 The baby is developing brain cells at an enormous 00:15:37.09\00:15:42.44 rate of speed. 00:15:42.47\00:15:43.59 And sometimes, during the pregnancy, the baby will be 00:15:43.62\00:15:47.75 grinding out as much as 100,000 brain cells per minute 00:15:47.78\00:15:53.78 What an enormous factory of brain cells... 00:15:53.81\00:15:56.88 So that at the end of the pregnancy, 00:15:56.91\00:15:58.78 the baby has between 50 and 200 billion brain cells. 00:15:58.82\00:16:05.26 Well, it takes a long time to develop all these. 00:16:05.29\00:16:07.76 Now when 100,000 brain cells are being ground out, 00:16:07.79\00:16:11.50 that means that any kind of emotional reflection 00:16:11.53\00:16:16.70 that she has by the hormones that she is producing 00:16:16.71\00:16:20.87 by those thoughts, these hormones can DRIVE 00:16:20.90\00:16:25.08 the development of the neurons in the baby. 00:16:25.11\00:16:29.17 So if she is angry at a certain time, her neurohormones will 00:16:29.20\00:16:37.06 sway the development of the neurons in the brain 00:16:37.09\00:16:41.32 a certain direction. 00:16:41.35\00:16:43.43 We want those to be peaceful, calm, joyous, studious, 00:16:43.46\00:16:48.28 spiritual, laid back... 00:16:48.29\00:16:51.57 We want all of those things and not high-tension, 00:16:51.60\00:16:54.67 high-strung types of emotions that are possible. 00:16:54.70\00:17:00.49 Then, of course, there are spiritual considerations 00:17:00.52\00:17:03.18 both for the mother, and for the baby. 00:17:03.21\00:17:05.78 And in keeping with that thought, 00:17:05.79\00:17:08.33 Dr. Miller is going to present to us some things from 00:17:08.36\00:17:12.05 the Bible, and also some thoughts that he has 00:17:12.08\00:17:14.99 from inspired sources. 00:17:15.02\00:17:16.94 You know, going back to the Book of Judges, 00:17:16.97\00:17:19.88 we see one of the first instances of someone who was 00:17:19.89\00:17:22.91 preplanned... Of course I think that we're all preplanned. 00:17:22.92\00:17:25.64 Going back to the Book of Judges 13, we find an angel 00:17:26.56\00:17:35.00 visiting a man's wife, and the man's name was Manoah 00:17:35.03\00:17:38.92 It says in verse 3, chapter 13... 00:17:38.95\00:17:41.76 "And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman 00:17:41.77\00:17:44.81 and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and barest not; 00:17:44.84\00:17:49.13 but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. " 00:17:49.16\00:17:51.39 So heaven already had a plan for the delivery of Israel 00:17:51.42\00:17:56.35 through the child that this woman would bear 00:17:56.38\00:17:58.93 who had formerly been barren. 00:17:58.96\00:18:00.40 Verse 4, "Now therefore beware" 00:18:00.43\00:18:02.82 BEWARE, and that's the subject we're trying to 00:18:02.85\00:18:05.79 talk to women about today. 00:18:05.82\00:18:07.10 BEWARE of what you do, or don't do! 00:18:07.13\00:18:09.96 "I pray thee, and drink not 00:18:10.00\00:18:12.22 wine, nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing" 00:18:12.23\00:18:16.59 ...Because you are basically the vessel from which this 00:18:16.62\00:18:20.21 vessel that I'm preparing is going to come from 00:18:20.24\00:18:22.69 ...the Lord is telling them through the angel. 00:18:22.72\00:18:24.82 "For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son, 00:18:24.85\00:18:27.99 and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child 00:18:28.02\00:18:31.58 shall be a Nazarite unto the Lord from the womb" 00:18:31.62\00:18:34.15 From the very womb, this child was set aside as somebody 00:18:34.18\00:18:37.67 SPECIAL, as somebody the Lord had specially chosen for work 00:18:37.70\00:18:41.45 And I believe that EVERY single human being that comes 00:18:41.48\00:18:44.30 into this world, God has a SPECIAL plan for. 00:18:44.31\00:18:46.67 From the womb, they have a job to do. 00:18:46.70\00:18:49.33 And God is telling the mother, take care of this child 00:18:49.36\00:18:52.42 starting right NOW 00:18:52.45\00:18:53.82 And, basically, right now, she wasn't even pregnant yet. 00:18:53.85\00:18:56.49 That was going to come some time later. 00:18:56.50\00:18:58.73 "From the womb and he shall begin to deliver Israel. " 00:18:58.76\00:19:02.92 From the WOMB... something is going to happen 00:19:02.95\00:19:05.16 that child will start to grow to become the deliverer of Israel 00:19:05.19\00:19:09.37 Now, I'm going to go over to a very precious Book of the Bible 00:19:09.40\00:19:11.92 It's called the Book of Luke. 00:19:11.95\00:19:13.62 It's a little book that Luke wrote, 00:19:13.65\00:19:16.92 and we're going to find a couple of good situations in there. 00:19:16.95\00:19:19.96 Luke 1:15... Again, an angel talking to a man 00:19:19.99\00:19:26.75 who is in the temple... And here is what it says 00:19:26.78\00:19:30.25 in verse 15, "For he shall be great in the 00:19:30.28\00:19:32.95 sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine, 00:19:32.96\00:19:35.61 nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, 00:19:35.64\00:19:38.86 even from his mother's womb. " 00:19:38.89\00:19:41.61 Talking about John the Baptist here. 00:19:41.64\00:19:43.68 From the very WOMB, the child was to be... what? 00:19:43.71\00:19:46.45 Filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:19:46.48\00:19:48.53 Filled with the Holy Ghost. 00:19:48.56\00:19:50.18 That means it's not just a piece of something developing 00:19:50.21\00:19:53.51 until it's born, it's going to become a human being. 00:19:53.54\00:19:55.46 From the WOMB, this child was filled with the Holy Spirit. 00:19:55.49\00:19:58.36 And I think our children today have the same opportunity 00:19:58.39\00:20:01.30 to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit, 00:20:01.31\00:20:02.72 if we're giving it the proper experience. 00:20:02.75\00:20:05.23 Okay, let's go on to over here, still in chapter 1, verse 38 00:20:05.24\00:20:10.16 "And Mary said"... now the angel has come to Mary, 00:20:10.19\00:20:13.97 and tells Mary that you are going to become the mother 00:20:14.00\00:20:17.71 of the Messiah, and what is her response? 00:20:17.74\00:20:20.12 "And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; 00:20:20.15\00:20:24.15 be it unto me according to thy word" 00:20:24.18\00:20:29.65 And Jesus Christ was SO submissive to His Father. 00:20:29.68\00:20:32.92 The mother was SO submissive to God's will, 00:20:32.95\00:20:36.31 and the Son so submissive to the same Father's will 00:20:36.34\00:20:40.13 ...this is what we can put into our children. 00:20:40.16\00:20:42.35 And then going over to verse 41 00:20:42.38\00:20:44.53 Now we see that John the Baptist's mother is 00:20:44.56\00:20:48.34 pregnant, Jesus' mother is pregnant, 00:20:48.37\00:20:50.65 and Jesus' mother, Mary, goes to visit Elizabeth 00:20:50.68\00:20:53.86 and this is what happens... 00:20:53.89\00:20:55.25 "And Mary arose, verse 39, in those days and went 00:20:55.28\00:21:00.93 into the hill country with haste unto a city of Judah, 00:21:00.96\00:21:04.45 and entered into the house of Zacharias, 00:21:04.48\00:21:07.71 and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, that, 00:21:07.74\00:21:11.92 when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, 00:21:11.95\00:21:14.90 the babe LEAPED in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled 00:21:14.93\00:21:19.54 with the Holy Ghost. " 00:21:19.57\00:21:20.94 So the child, even within the womb, 00:21:20.95\00:21:23.43 already filled with the Holy Spirit, recognized 00:21:23.46\00:21:26.09 that the Messiah was near, 00:21:26.12\00:21:27.73 and for JOY, LEAPED in the womb! 00:21:27.76\00:21:30.27 There is a lot that happens to that child 00:21:30.30\00:21:32.91 when it's in the mother's womb and we have to make sure that 00:21:32.92\00:21:35.91 we are just like Mary... mothers are just like Mary 00:21:35.94\00:21:39.43 "Lord, whatever you want me to do... 00:21:39.44\00:21:41.12 I'm going to raise this child for you. " 00:21:41.15\00:21:43.06 Elizabeth, knowing that this child is going to be 00:21:43.09\00:21:45.89 filled with the Holy Spirit... 00:21:45.92\00:21:46.96 Even Samson's mother, knowing that this child is going to be 00:21:46.99\00:21:49.64 filled with the Holy Ghost, 00:21:49.67\00:21:50.74 even from the womb, and deliver Israel. 00:21:50.77\00:21:53.19 These are some precious privileges that we have. 00:21:53.22\00:21:55.60 As mothers and fathers have an equal role, 00:21:55.61\00:21:59.02 I like to hear what fathers are saying now... 00:21:59.05\00:22:01.82 "We are pregnant" "We had a baby" 00:22:01.83\00:22:05.00 ...Because it is a WE situation. 00:22:05.03\00:22:07.33 And as we both get involved with the process of 00:22:07.36\00:22:10.69 raising our children for the Lord, according to the 00:22:10.72\00:22:13.10 BEST pediatric book ever written... and that's the Bible, 00:22:13.13\00:22:16.99 we're going to raise children that can truly be 00:22:17.02\00:22:19.68 filled with the Holy Spirit even from the womb... Dr. Thrash 00:22:19.71\00:22:23.61 Very good. I really appreciate these texts from the Bible 00:22:23.64\00:22:27.22 that indicate to us the prenatal state of babies 00:22:27.25\00:22:31.66 and help us to know that they are, indeed, individuals 00:22:31.69\00:22:35.20 and are truly people from the very beginning 00:22:35.23\00:22:38.93 of their conception. 00:22:38.96\00:22:40.60 Now, can a woman predict the day that the baby is 00:22:40.63\00:22:44.97 going to be born? Yes, to some degree, 00:22:45.00\00:22:47.66 but as we all know, babies can be born a month, 00:22:47.69\00:22:50.82 or even 2 before the date that we expect... 00:22:50.85\00:22:54.72 Or, they can delay, and be born even 2 or 3 weeks 00:22:54.75\00:22:59.30 after the day we expect. 00:22:59.33\00:23:01.03 But generally speaking, if a woman will subtract 3 00:23:01.06\00:23:06.38 from the month of her last menstrual period, 00:23:06.41\00:23:10.16 and add 7 to 12 days, that will usually give her 00:23:10.19\00:23:14.42 a ballpark estimate of when the baby is going to be born. 00:23:14.43\00:23:19.07 But you can't hold nature to any kind of schedule 00:23:19.10\00:23:23.50 It may be that day, or it may be a little bit before 00:23:23.51\00:23:26.79 or a little after. 00:23:26.82\00:23:28.07 Once the baby gets to the place of maybe 2 or 3 days 00:23:28.10\00:23:32.25 before the birth, the obstetrician can often 00:23:32.28\00:23:35.91 say when the birth is going to be, but even that 00:23:35.94\00:23:40.00 is freighted with a good bit of difficulty. 00:23:40.03\00:23:44.04 Now who should deliver the baby? 00:23:44.07\00:23:46.60 The mother has choices these days. 00:23:46.63\00:23:49.08 Once, we only had the choice of an obstetrician, 00:23:49.11\00:23:51.99 but now, there are very good midwives who practice 00:23:52.02\00:23:56.62 in most of the states of the United States, 00:23:56.65\00:23:59.50 and can do a very acceptable job of delivering babies 00:23:59.53\00:24:04.68 In fact, may of them are far more skilled at this, 00:24:04.71\00:24:08.33 than the obstetricians who are their backup people. 00:24:08.36\00:24:11.59 I remember when I was getting my training in obstetrics, 00:24:11.62\00:24:15.19 after I graduated from medical school, some of the nurses 00:24:15.22\00:24:21.90 who had been 15-20 years in the delivery rooms 00:24:21.94\00:24:25.48 that I worked in, many of them had even delivered more babies 00:24:25.51\00:24:29.55 than I had even seen pregnant women. 00:24:29.58\00:24:32.91 So, I leaned on them very heavily for instruction 00:24:32.94\00:24:36.50 on the practical aspects of delivering babies. 00:24:36.51\00:24:39.82 They were extremely good. 00:24:39.85\00:24:42.11 And today, we have the same kind of thing. 00:24:42.12\00:24:44.34 There are many nurse-midwives who are SO skilled 00:24:44.35\00:24:47.82 that anyone would be privileged to have 00:24:47.83\00:24:49.92 them to be your delivery attendant. 00:24:49.95\00:24:52.94 Where should the baby be born? 00:24:52.97\00:24:55.30 Well, I can't deny the training that I had 00:24:55.33\00:25:00.33 back more than 50 years ago when my professor of obstetrics 00:25:00.36\00:25:04.77 said, "The most ideal place for a baby to be born is 00:25:04.80\00:25:08.57 in its own home. " 00:25:08.60\00:25:09.91 But the reason why we don't do it that way is 00:25:09.92\00:25:12.69 principally because of the convenience of the physician. 00:25:12.72\00:25:16.28 Well since then, we have developed a lot of high tech 00:25:16.31\00:25:19.92 procedures for women, and for babies 00:25:19.95\00:25:25.15 and delivery schedules, and these, I think, make it so that 00:25:25.18\00:25:30.20 we DO need to have a hospital nearby if you're going to 00:25:30.23\00:25:34.61 enter into those kinds of procedures. 00:25:34.64\00:25:37.33 Generally speaking, home births done in a very simple way 00:25:37.36\00:25:41.15 ...no drugs at all administered, can be the most safe and 00:25:41.18\00:25:45.15 the most pleasing of all deliveries. 00:25:45.18\00:25:48.56 Many of you, listening today, will say... 00:25:48.59\00:25:51.80 "I was born in the home, as I was" 00:25:51.83\00:25:54.69 and we, of course, felt that that was the only way 00:25:54.72\00:25:57.50 to be born because the nearest hospital was 35 miles away, 00:25:57.53\00:26:01.78 and that, by ox cart, was not very pleasant. 00:26:01.81\00:26:06.30 Now, what about breastfeeding the baby? 00:26:06.33\00:26:08.77 Every baby that is possible to breastfeed, should be given 00:26:08.80\00:26:13.51 that great privilege; otherwise, it's a poverty 00:26:13.52\00:26:18.06 program for the baby's nutrition. 00:26:18.09\00:26:20.73 But mother's milk is ideally designed to satisfy all 00:26:20.76\00:26:24.85 the needs of the baby, and the mother, and the baby 00:26:24.88\00:26:28.43 can benefit from this very convenient method of feeding 00:26:28.46\00:26:34.40 the baby. 00:26:34.43\00:26:35.48 Using a bottle is inconvenient, at the very best, 00:26:35.49\00:26:38.36 whereas, breastfeeding is hardly inconvenient at all. 00:26:38.39\00:26:41.98 Now nausea and vomiting of pregnancy can be 00:26:42.01\00:26:45.02 somewhat of a problem, and if the mother has this, 00:26:45.05\00:26:49.34 she can often handle it very nicely with ginger, 00:26:49.37\00:26:53.44 or with mint oil... just a tiny, little taste of 00:26:53.45\00:26:58.43 mint oil is usually all that she needs and that will 00:26:58.46\00:27:01.94 take care of matters. 00:27:01.97\00:27:04.10 Most women will develop some varicose veins during pregnancy 00:27:04.13\00:27:08.51 and if she does, she can just know that the time of the 00:27:08.54\00:27:13.89 increased intraabdominal pressure is self-limited 00:27:13.92\00:27:18.97 and the time is coming when she won't have that anymore, 00:27:19.00\00:27:24.08 and the varicose veins will go down to some degree. 00:27:24.11\00:27:29.51 Let cramps can be a serious problem during pregnancy 00:27:29.52\00:27:33.37 and most women have 1 or 2, either leg cramps, 00:27:33.40\00:27:37.36 or cramps of the muscles of the abdomen, 00:27:37.39\00:27:39.74 or cramps somewhere else. 00:27:39.77\00:27:41.25 Not too much can be done for that, except to rub the place 00:27:41.28\00:27:45.51 where the cramp is, and hope for the best that 00:27:45.52\00:27:49.48 they won't last long. 00:27:49.51\00:27:51.66 I hope these very simple things on how to handle 00:27:51.69\00:27:54.34 a pregnancy can be of great help to you. 00:27:54.38\00:27:57.37
