Where does a parent get information for rearing a child? 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.00 There's a good bit written out there. 00:00:04.83\00:00:07.10 What of it is good, and what is not good has to be studied. 00:00:07.13\00:00:10.77 We will have some principles that may help you to sort out 00:00:10.80\00:00:14.66 which of the information that you have available could be 00:00:14.69\00:00:18.73 really good... 00:00:18.76\00:00:19.76 So we hope you will join us for this program. 00:00:19.79\00:00:22.97 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:43.12\00:00:44.36 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:44.39\00:00:47.89 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:47.92\00:00:51.68 Now while not everything that you will find in print 00:00:51.71\00:00:54.92 is going to be helpful for you to rear your child, 00:00:54.95\00:00:58.77 there are some things that can be very helpful, 00:00:58.80\00:01:01.48 but you will find a GREAT number of journals and 00:01:01.51\00:01:06.28 and magazines such as this one that I hold... 00:01:06.31\00:01:09.39 And as I have read through this I have found that there's a 00:01:09.42\00:01:12.87 good bit of good information in it. 00:01:12.90\00:01:15.04 But then there are some things that I would be 00:01:15.05\00:01:17.15 just as happy not to have parents believe that 00:01:17.18\00:01:20.91 that was something good. 00:01:20.94\00:01:22.13 I find that the very best thing in print all around 00:01:22.16\00:01:26.21 is a book called "Child Guidance" 00:01:26.24\00:01:28.70 When my children were very small, 00:01:28.73\00:01:32.05 I didn't have this book available to me, 00:01:32.08\00:01:34.78 but, later in their lives, I did, and I felt that 00:01:34.79\00:01:37.70 I made some corrections that were just absolutely wonderful 00:01:37.73\00:01:41.44 that helped me a lot in rearing my children. 00:01:41.47\00:01:45.51 Some of the principles there were of such a nature 00:01:45.54\00:01:48.94 that I could make certain that the program was good 00:01:48.97\00:01:52.85 even if I didn't know certain scientific principles... 00:01:52.88\00:01:56.20 or averages in the rearing of my children, 00:01:56.23\00:01:58.91 and in the control of their health habits. 00:01:58.94\00:02:01.58 I have some aids, some charts, that I would like to 00:02:01.61\00:02:06.32 show you that will help you to know about the average 00:02:06.35\00:02:10.17 height of a child, and just how nicely you can 00:02:10.20\00:02:15.32 judge just how your children should stack up with the 00:02:15.35\00:02:20.48 averages. 00:02:20.49\00:02:21.58 Now, the average height in children... 00:02:21.61\00:02:24.58 the age x 2 + 32 equals the height 00:02:24.61\00:02:32.20 To give you an example... 00:02:32.23\00:02:35.71 Let's say a 2-1/2-year-old child multiply that by 2 00:02:35.74\00:02:40.06 you'll get 5... then 5 + 32 =37 00:02:40.09\00:02:45.65 So, the height at about 2-1/2 years should be 00:02:45.68\00:02:49.68 around 37 inches. 00:02:49.71\00:02:51.75 Now, that can be a guideline for you with the height. 00:02:51.76\00:02:55.91 But now, we have the weight. 00:02:55.94\00:02:57.66 We need to know what the average weight is 00:02:57.69\00:03:00.90 ...what might be considered to be a normal weight. 00:03:00.93\00:03:03.75 Although, I guess there is no person that actually 00:03:03.78\00:03:08.22 fully falls in the normal range. 00:03:08.25\00:03:12.31 We hardly even know what a normal range is for children. 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.46 But the birth weight should be between 6 and 8 pounds. 00:03:15.49\00:03:19.49 If a person is over 8 pounds at birth, 00:03:19.52\00:03:22.21 that increases the risk that a person would get 00:03:22.22\00:03:25.48 diabetes later in life... 00:03:25.51\00:03:27.78 And it also increases the risk that the mother will develop 00:03:27.81\00:03:31.55 diabetes some time in her life. 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.82 Then at 6 months, the child should 00:03:33.85\00:03:36.65 roughly double the birth weight. 00:03:36.69\00:03:38.45 At 12 months, roughly triple the birth weight. 00:03:38.49\00:03:42.16 At 24 months, quadruple the birth weight. 00:03:42.17\00:03:47.35 So that will help you a lot to know about averages. 00:03:47.39\00:03:50.82 Now an average weight in children... 00:03:50.85\00:03:53.10 Let's give an example... 00:03:53.13\00:03:54.10 So that can help you with that. 00:04:04.77\00:04:08.49 This is in the very young age, 00:04:08.50\00:04:12.47 but now what about after the age of 3... 00:04:12.50\00:04:15.11 Then we have some different parameters that we need to check 00:04:15.14\00:04:18.38 to let us know what the person should weigh after the age of 3 00:04:18.41\00:04:22.84 If we take the age, multiply that by 5 and add 17, 00:04:22.87\00:04:30.31 that will give us the average weight after the age of 3 00:04:30.34\00:04:34.14 Let's notice this example... 00:04:34.15\00:04:35.81 A 4-year-old child, multiply that by 5, gives 20 00:04:35.84\00:04:40.02 20 + 17 gives 37, so at the age of 4, 00:04:40.05\00:04:44.57 the little child should be around 37 pounds. 00:04:44.60\00:04:49.72 So that can be very helpful to you to know just what 00:04:49.73\00:04:53.12 can be the average height and weight of children. 00:04:53.15\00:04:58.46 If your child doesn't fall within this range, 00:04:58.49\00:05:02.55 don't be greatly upset, because that probably just 00:05:02.58\00:05:05.79 means that if your child LOOKS normal height 00:05:05.82\00:05:09.30 FEELS normal weight, then you're probably all right 00:05:09.33\00:05:14.95 with your child, even if he doesn't fall EXACTLY 00:05:14.98\00:05:17.29 within this range that I gave you here. 00:05:17.32\00:05:21.08 Children who grow up very fast are subject to a 00:05:21.11\00:05:25.59 wide variety of illnesses that we never had before 00:05:25.62\00:05:29.72 because our children are growing up much too 00:05:29.75\00:05:32.45 fast in our age. Why is this happening? 00:05:32.48\00:05:35.80 Well, it's because of our lifestyle in this modern society 00:05:35.83\00:05:39.60 And, if you will study your child's lifestyle, 00:05:39.63\00:05:42.96 study also their height, and weight, 00:05:42.99\00:05:45.47 make certain they are not greatly exceeding 00:05:45.50\00:05:48.62 the height and weight charts. 00:05:48.65\00:05:50.34 In fact, it would be good if they were no more 00:05:50.37\00:05:52.85 than just average. 00:05:52.88\00:05:54.27 Now if your child is gaining WAY too fast, 00:05:54.28\00:05:57.86 getting tall WAY to fast... 00:05:57.89\00:06:00.04 they're in the husky sizes for each of the ages that 00:06:00.07\00:06:04.53 they pass through, 00:06:04.56\00:06:05.95 then you need to take better care of your child's lifestyle 00:06:05.98\00:06:11.43 ...the exercise, the sedentary habits that they have, 00:06:11.46\00:06:15.13 the diet that they have, what snack foods 00:06:15.16\00:06:18.13 they have between meals, and personally, 00:06:18.16\00:06:21.11 I see no reason for a child to have any snacks between meals 00:06:21.14\00:06:24.40 If you will train your child correctly, 00:06:24.43\00:06:26.64 they will not get hungry between meals. 00:06:26.67\00:06:28.67 Just put their meals about 5 to 7 hours apart 00:06:28.70\00:06:32.75 and they won't get hungry between meals unless 00:06:32.78\00:06:35.73 you've trained them to get hungry between meals. 00:06:35.76\00:06:38.36 Our schools tend to train them. 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.36 But one of the problems in being overweight, 00:06:40.39\00:06:43.11 is that children are now getting gallbladder disease 00:06:43.14\00:06:45.87 when they NEVER used to do it. 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.76 We used to say the signs of gallbladder disease were 00:06:47.79\00:06:53.35 fourfold... FAT, FAIR, FEMALE, and 40 00:06:53.38\00:06:58.43 We can no longer say that because they may not be 00:06:58.46\00:07:02.23 fair any more... 00:07:02.26\00:07:03.44 They are now darker-skinned individuals also getting 00:07:03.47\00:07:07.99 gallbladder disease. 00:07:08.02\00:07:09.30 The 40, you can forget that number because 00:07:09.33\00:07:12.97 we now see gallbladder disease at almost any age... 00:07:13.00\00:07:16.36 even in 12 year olds, or 8 year olds... 00:07:16.39\00:07:19.52 They may have gallstones and have to have 00:07:19.55\00:07:23.09 the gallbladder operations. 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.31 We also recognize that it's not altogether females. 00:07:25.34\00:07:30.06 Now males also have the problem because men and boys 00:07:30.09\00:07:35.98 are just as overweight as little girls are which 00:07:36.01\00:07:40.39 did not used to be. 00:07:40.42\00:07:41.71 It used to be that most of the time, it was the little girls 00:07:41.74\00:07:45.30 who tended to be overweight, rather than the little boys. 00:07:45.31\00:07:49.27 Gallbladder disease may also be the herald of some other 00:07:49.30\00:07:53.30 problems in childhood, and sometimes we may not 00:07:53.33\00:07:58.08 relate psychological problems to lifestyle, 00:07:58.11\00:08:03.12 but they certainly are related. 00:08:03.15\00:08:04.98 One of those is delinquency, or crime in childhood. 00:08:05.01\00:08:09.13 With me now is Dr. Donald Miller 00:08:09.16\00:08:13.28 and he is going to talk with you some about crime, 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.21 and crime in childhood is on the rise. 00:08:16.24\00:08:20.00 You've probably seen the study 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.15 that was done a number of years ago... 00:08:22.18\00:08:23.99 what was the major problems with children, 00:08:24.03\00:08:25.81 teenagers in the 1950s, compared to what was 00:08:25.84\00:08:29.13 the major problem with teenagers I think this study was done 00:08:29.16\00:08:32.07 in the 80s. 00:08:32.10\00:08:33.92 Some of the major problems in the 1950s was cutting in line, 00:08:33.95\00:08:37.81 talking in class, chewing gum, throwing spit wads... 00:08:37.84\00:08:41.27 A pretty rough group back then! 00:08:41.30\00:08:43.16 But then they looked at the problems with the children 00:08:44.16\00:08:45.74 in the 80s, and I would say probably even today 00:08:45.78\00:08:48.17 in our schools... What are the major problems we're having? 00:08:48.20\00:08:51.04 We're having assaults. We're having murders. 00:08:51.07\00:08:53.18 We're having rapes. We're having unbelievable 00:08:53.21\00:08:55.89 amount of problems with the children today. 00:08:55.92\00:08:58.32 Now I'm not saying ALL children, but we're seeing a very 00:08:58.35\00:09:01.41 BIG rise in the temperament of the children in our schools 00:09:01.44\00:09:05.55 today, and outside of our schools. 00:09:05.58\00:09:07.58 What is causing this unbelievable 00:09:07.61\00:09:09.84 rise in crime in the schools? 00:09:09.87\00:09:11.61 One of the things can be the unstructured home life. 00:09:11.64\00:09:14.73 Children now come home and they're raised by their peers. 00:09:14.76\00:09:19.11 They're raised by their televisions. 00:09:19.14\00:09:20.90 And what are they seeing on the television? 00:09:20.93\00:09:22.78 What are they hearing in their music? 00:09:22.81\00:09:24.29 They've got music today, if you listen to the words, 00:09:24.32\00:09:27.54 and I don't, every once in a while I hear, I catch a snatch 00:09:27.57\00:09:30.62 while filling up gas, the very music is promoting 00:09:30.65\00:09:34.54 a violent lifestyle. 00:09:34.57\00:09:37.85 There's a very interesting quote that I have... 00:09:37.86\00:09:39.69 It is by Aristotle... and he basically says, 00:09:39.72\00:09:43.18 "If you listen to ignoble music, you will become 00:09:43.21\00:09:47.07 ignoble yourself. " 00:09:47.10\00:09:48.45 "If you listen to noble music, music of a higher level, 00:09:48.46\00:09:52.28 you will rise to that same level. " 00:09:52.31\00:09:54.41 Listen to the music today, don't listen to it too long... 00:09:54.44\00:09:57.18 But you're going to find that it is driving a person back down 00:09:57.21\00:10:00.57 The television is promoting crime in the child. 00:10:00.60\00:10:06.13 But, I think one of the BIGGEST things 00:10:06.16\00:10:08.12 is these video games. 00:10:08.15\00:10:10.88 A child sits down to their computer, and they can sit there 00:10:10.89\00:10:14.77 and kill 100 people before breakfast. 00:10:14.80\00:10:17.88 It's violence, it's just pure violence. 00:10:17.91\00:10:21.04 And you cannot be exposed to this much violence 00:10:21.07\00:10:24.55 for such a long period of time and not have it make 00:10:24.58\00:10:27.47 some type of an effect on your mind. 00:10:27.50\00:10:29.85 There's a very good principle in the Bible... 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.66 By beholding, we become changed into the same image. 00:10:31.69\00:10:35.48 And so what image are you allowing 00:10:35.51\00:10:38.27 your children to observe... 00:10:38.30\00:10:39.53 And children out there, what are you watching? 00:10:39.56\00:10:41.62 WHAT do you want to be like? 00:10:41.65\00:10:43.02 Do you want to be like that Kung-Fu master over there? 00:10:43.05\00:10:47.02 Or would you like to be like Jesus? 00:10:47.05\00:10:48.66 We need to spend more time 00:10:48.69\00:10:50.05 looking at THAT which we'd like to become. 00:10:50.08\00:10:52.41 The foods that we eat today... 00:10:52.44\00:10:54.51 They did an interesting study called "The Tidewater Study" 00:10:54.54\00:10:57.72 And Tidewater is a prison. 00:10:57.75\00:10:59.79 And what they did in this prison, is they withdrew 00:10:59.82\00:11:03.25 3 different things from their lifestyles. 00:11:03.28\00:11:05.82 They withdrew caffeinated beverages, 00:11:05.86\00:11:09.46 cola drinks, things like that, and chocolate. 00:11:09.49\00:11:11.45 They withdrew refined carbohydrates, 00:11:11.48\00:11:13.91 and they withdrew sugary junk foods 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.79 ...just those simple 3 things 00:11:16.82\00:11:18.46 none of which we need for our lives. 00:11:18.49\00:11:20.24 None of which we need to make us grow 00:11:20.27\00:11:23.07 healthier, happier or anything else. 00:11:23.10\00:11:24.86 They withdrew these 3 things from criminals, 00:11:24.90\00:11:28.12 these are grown men in the prison, 00:11:28.15\00:11:30.73 they withdrew these things, and they found that 00:11:30.76\00:11:32.59 assaults diminished, robberies, thefts from other prisoners 00:11:32.62\00:11:38.02 diminished, malicious horseplay diminished 00:11:38.05\00:11:42.59 Everything went down that prisoners seemed to get 00:11:42.60\00:11:45.27 a little bit more together because their diet 00:11:45.30\00:11:49.00 just those 3 things. 00:11:49.03\00:11:50.28 Those 3 things are what our children are living on today. 00:11:50.31\00:11:53.91 Our children come home from school, the first thing they do 00:11:53.94\00:11:56.39 is grab some gooey snack food. 00:11:56.42\00:11:58.88 Grab some soda on the way home from school. 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.89 And all of these things are going to excite something 00:12:01.92\00:12:04.35 inside their bodies. 00:12:04.38\00:12:05.76 They did another interesting study with rats. 00:12:05.77\00:12:08.58 They had 1 group of rats, and they fed it the typical 00:12:08.61\00:12:12.92 teenage diet which included some good things, 00:12:12.95\00:12:16.41 some salads and green beans, but a lot of the bad things 00:12:16.44\00:12:19.17 that our children are typically growing up on today. 00:12:19.20\00:12:21.77 And then they offered them, in the cage, 2 choices... 00:12:21.78\00:12:25.76 Straight water, or water with 10% alcohol 00:12:25.79\00:12:29.00 And they observed the rats, and they found that the rats 00:12:29.03\00:12:32.95 went to the alcohol about 52% of the time. 00:12:32.98\00:12:36.39 Now you might say, "Well, a rat doesn't know 00:12:36.42\00:12:38.84 the difference between water and alcohol, 00:12:38.87\00:12:40.31 they just drank what they had, and 50% went one way, 00:12:40.34\00:12:42.74 and 50% went the other way. 00:12:42.75\00:12:43.96 Well, then they had a second cage of rats... 00:12:43.99\00:12:46.70 This cage of rats, they gave Purina Lab Chow for rats... 00:12:46.71\00:12:51.79 especially made for rats living in these types of 00:12:51.82\00:12:54.81 experimental conditions. 00:12:54.84\00:12:56.24 Same 2 choices with the alcohol, 00:12:56.27\00:12:59.08 these rats went to the alcohol 18% of the time. 00:12:59.11\00:13:02.71 But then we have a third group of rats... 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.06 Same 2 choices, but they were getting a vegetarian diet. 00:13:05.09\00:13:09.46 If I was a rat, I'd want to be in this group 00:13:09.49\00:13:11.32 A vegetarian diet, they went to the alcohol 2.7% of the time. 00:13:11.35\00:13:16.37 Unbelievable difference! 00:13:16.40\00:13:18.08 And the alcohol is a gateway to other problems. 00:13:18.09\00:13:21.48 And as we go up the line... 00:13:21.51\00:13:22.86 You see, children today are out-of-control because 00:13:22.89\00:13:24.92 they are into EVERYTHING else in the world. 00:13:24.93\00:13:26.96 We need to SLOW them down. 00:13:26.99\00:13:29.30 Get them into something that's going to cause their minds to be 00:13:29.33\00:13:32.84 placed in looking upwards to something 00:13:32.85\00:13:36.36 far better as an example. 00:13:36.39\00:13:38.29 So, we need to get our children away from these things... 00:13:38.32\00:13:40.62 the TV, the media, the radio, the CDs... 00:13:40.65\00:13:46.83 just unbelievable the assault on our children today. 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.60 And, it's going to cause a much bigger crime wave than 00:13:49.63\00:13:53.05 what we are seeing today, and we need to get our children. 00:13:53.08\00:13:55.99 We need to reclaim our children. 00:13:56.02\00:13:57.29 Dr. Thrash... We going to lose them. 00:13:57.32\00:13:58.70 That's for sure. 00:13:58.73\00:14:00.54 One of the problems with growing up too fast and being too active 00:14:00.57\00:14:04.44 in certain areas is that of nearsightedness. 00:14:04.47\00:14:08.02 I'd like to draw for you on the board a diagram of the eye 00:14:08.05\00:14:13.16 so that you can see just how nearsightedness could occur 00:14:13.19\00:14:16.83 in a person who reads too much, and who is growing up too fast. 00:14:16.86\00:14:23.02 Let's just say that this represents the eye. 00:14:23.05\00:14:26.83 This is the cornea here... just a little bit of a bulge 00:14:26.86\00:14:30.88 and then the eye comes around like this, 00:14:30.91\00:14:35.37 maybe I've made that just a little bit off center... 00:14:35.40\00:14:38.24 And we have then, here the lens just at the front of the 00:14:38.27\00:14:46.56 eye like this, and then light rays come 00:14:46.59\00:14:51.67 into the eye from afar, and we can say they come in 00:14:51.70\00:14:55.67 relatively straight, just about like this 00:14:55.70\00:14:58.93 And where they come into the lens, 00:14:58.96\00:15:03.89 they are then focused so that the rays actually strike 00:15:03.92\00:15:09.84 on the back part of the retina, and focus there. 00:15:09.87\00:15:14.62 Now that's in a person who has a normal size eye. 00:15:14.65\00:15:19.79 But in a child who is reading too much, 00:15:19.82\00:15:23.93 growing up too fast, the eyeball will actually be larger, 00:15:23.96\00:15:29.91 and so the person focuses in front of the retina 00:15:29.94\00:15:35.22 Such a person is said to be nearsighted. 00:15:35.25\00:15:38.29 Now, if the person has a failure to thrive, 00:15:38.32\00:15:42.33 they may, usually not, but they may get a small 00:15:42.34\00:15:46.53 eye and the focus is behind them. 00:15:46.56\00:15:49.51 This person is farsighted. 00:15:49.54\00:15:52.21 So, nearsightedness with the focus occurring before the rays 00:15:52.24\00:15:57.19 get to the retina, this nearsightedness is getting to be 00:15:57.22\00:16:02.12 far more common in our day. 00:16:02.15\00:16:04.29 So, ophthalmologists are seeing children who are 00:16:04.32\00:16:08.54 just 4 and 5 years of age, who have been reading, 00:16:08.57\00:16:12.07 or doing close work with the eyes for many years 00:16:12.10\00:16:15.54 ...and that, of course, encourages nearsightedness. 00:16:15.57\00:16:18.64 Now, we have also another problem... 00:16:18.67\00:16:22.36 precocious puberty in children is today a very serious problem. 00:16:22.39\00:16:27.99 In some countries of the world, it is considered to be 00:16:28.02\00:16:31.56 in epidemic proportions. 00:16:31.59\00:16:33.51 Only recently, it began to be considered to be epidemic 00:16:33.54\00:16:38.85 in the United States. 00:16:38.88\00:16:40.33 Children getting their menstrual period, or coming into their 00:16:40.36\00:16:46.54 puberty with axillary hair, and pubic hair FAR in advance of 00:16:46.57\00:16:52.22 the time that they used to many years ago. 00:16:52.25\00:16:54.69 So, Dr. Miller is going to talk with us a bit about 00:16:54.72\00:16:57.92 precocious puberty, and some of its causes. 00:16:57.95\00:17:01.12 You know, you look back in the 1880s, at the time a child 00:17:01.15\00:17:05.03 would reach puberty basically when the time that they 00:17:05.06\00:17:07.44 could reproduce their generation, 00:17:07.47\00:17:10.24 it was usually between 16 and 18 years of age. 00:17:10.27\00:17:13.59 And, there are countries in the world today... it's still 00:17:13.62\00:17:16.86 up in that area because of certain lifestyle modifications. 00:17:16.89\00:17:20.33 But we find that today, about every decade, we're loping about 00:17:20.36\00:17:24.68 6 months off of the generation age. 00:17:24.71\00:17:29.58 And today, basically, the puberty, on the average, 00:17:29.61\00:17:33.40 is around 11. 00:17:33.43\00:17:34.65 I read an article which was SO startling to me... 00:17:34.68\00:17:37.51 It said, "1 in 6 girls reaches puberty by the age of 8" 00:17:37.54\00:17:41.71 That means a child, at the age of 8 years old, 00:17:41.74\00:17:45.27 has all the hormones, and the developing equipment to be a 00:17:45.30\00:17:50.04 full grown woman, but she has the experience of a child. 00:17:50.07\00:17:54.04 A boy has an experience of a boy. 00:17:54.07\00:17:56.40 And what do you do, when you have that situation? 00:17:56.43\00:17:59.26 It's a serious, serious problem in the world today. 00:17:59.29\00:18:01.49 They were observing, epidemiologists, 00:18:01.52\00:18:05.25 a particular problem of precocious puberty. 00:18:05.28\00:18:07.63 It was happening in Puerto Rico some years ago. 00:18:07.66\00:18:10.56 And I've seen the studies, and I have seen the pictures 00:18:10.59\00:18:13.46 which were some extremely alarming pictures. 00:18:13.47\00:18:15.88 They found a whole group of children to be developing 00:18:15.91\00:18:20.92 extremely quick... we're talking about young boys 00:18:20.95\00:18:23.87 5, 6, 7 with developed breasts. 00:18:23.90\00:18:27.00 We're talking about all the secondary 00:18:27.01\00:18:29.28 sexual characteristics... pubic hair, everything, 00:18:29.31\00:18:33.43 the voice dropping... 00:18:33.44\00:18:34.44 We're talking about children WAY before their teens 00:18:34.47\00:18:37.45 coming into this problem. 00:18:37.48\00:18:38.55 They started saying, "What is the problem we're having here" 00:18:38.58\00:18:41.82 This was a serious epidemic. 00:18:41.85\00:18:43.65 So they sent the epidemiologist down there to search out 00:18:43.68\00:18:47.04 why are all these children... 00:18:47.07\00:18:48.79 They found out that all of these children were from homes 00:18:48.82\00:18:52.56 of parents who worked right down the road at the chicken 00:18:52.59\00:18:56.15 factory. 00:18:56.18\00:18:57.28 We find that a chicken... I was raised partly on a farm, 00:18:57.31\00:19:01.21 and every spring we'd buy a whole clutch of eggs 00:19:01.24\00:19:05.27 and we'd incubate them, and they'd hatch out 00:19:05.30\00:19:07.61 And it took about 12 weeks, at the minimum for them to get 00:19:07.64\00:19:10.93 to be what we call, a garish thought... "fryer age. " 00:19:10.96\00:19:14.73 They've got that down, in many places, to 8 weeks. 00:19:14.76\00:19:19.19 But I was in Japan not long ago, and a man was telling me 00:19:19.22\00:19:23.71 that he has a friend in South America, 00:19:23.74\00:19:25.65 that his father runs one of these places, 00:19:25.68\00:19:28.59 and they've got it down to, I don't know how they 00:19:28.62\00:19:30.37 did this, 18 days! 00:19:30.40\00:19:31.85 Now can you imagine taking a little fluffy chick 00:19:31.88\00:19:36.29 to the size so they can be killed and eaten in 18 days. 00:19:36.32\00:19:41.08 I mean, 8 weeks is bad enough. 00:19:41.11\00:19:42.71 How do they do that... hormones. 00:19:42.74\00:19:44.82 The children are receiving these hormones through the food 00:19:44.85\00:19:47.19 because if you give the hormone to an animal, 00:19:47.22\00:19:49.63 and you eat the animal, you get the hormones. 00:19:49.66\00:19:52.38 And these are hormones that accelerate the growth, 00:19:52.41\00:19:55.76 and that's what we're seeing in children today... 00:19:55.79\00:19:57.52 an acceleration in their growth. 00:19:57.53\00:19:59.02 That's was we call "precocious puberty" 00:19:59.05\00:20:01.78 We need to slow it down. 00:20:01.81\00:20:04.12 How do you slow it down? 00:20:04.15\00:20:05.73 I would recommend you get on the most simple diet 00:20:05.76\00:20:07.94 that you can... fruits, vegetables, 00:20:07.97\00:20:10.32 whole grains, nuts and seeds. 00:20:10.35\00:20:12.85 If they eat those things, 00:20:12.88\00:20:14.31 they're getting all the calcium they need. 00:20:14.35\00:20:16.26 They're getting all the protein they need. 00:20:16.29\00:20:18.17 Throw in some organic vegetables, have them eat it 00:20:18.20\00:20:20.95 without peeling it. 00:20:20.98\00:20:22.80 You're going to get your vitamin B12. 00:20:22.83\00:20:24.19 Have them eat a simple diet. 00:20:24.22\00:20:26.23 But there are other things that cause this 00:20:26.24\00:20:27.99 precocious puberty... is the avenues to the soul. 00:20:28.02\00:20:31.05 We need to guard, carefully, the avenues to the soul. 00:20:31.08\00:20:34.11 I've already talked about it in the crime in children. 00:20:34.14\00:20:36.46 We've got to watch what goes in the ears. 00:20:36.49\00:20:38.40 Watch what goes in the eyes, as well as what goes 00:20:38.43\00:20:41.16 in the mouth... and slow this process down 00:20:41.17\00:20:43.73 because you see precocious puberty OPENS THE DOOR 00:20:43.76\00:20:46.92 to all kinds of adult diseases. 00:20:46.95\00:20:49.92 And we find that the sooner a child grows up, 00:20:49.95\00:20:52.49 the sooner and the quicker they will grow down. 00:20:52.50\00:20:56.20 When I say grow down, start developing the adult diseases. 00:20:56.23\00:21:00.23 Adult-onset diabetes, osteoporosis, 00:21:00.26\00:21:03.72 coronary heart disease... all of these things are now 00:21:03.75\00:21:06.53 childhood diseases... It's a crime. 00:21:06.56\00:21:08.39 It should never have happened. 00:21:08.42\00:21:09.89 But you're going to find that a child who is 00:21:09.92\00:21:12.65 raised very simply... 00:21:12.68\00:21:15.25 Now the trouble with our society, you see this is also 00:21:15.28\00:21:18.16 a societal mindset. 00:21:18.17\00:21:20.92 You take the child out in public and your child 00:21:20.95\00:21:23.58 happens to be a little smaller. 00:21:23.61\00:21:24.95 they don't have all the muscles already and all the bulk to them 00:21:24.98\00:21:28.25 and they think that the child is being abused... 00:21:28.28\00:21:30.25 And they look over at this other child who already is a 00:21:30.28\00:21:32.85 foot taller, and already developing... 00:21:32.86\00:21:35.06 When I see a child, 10 years of age, already developing 00:21:35.07\00:21:39.41 their adulthood characteristics, I grieve for the parents 00:21:39.44\00:21:46.43 and I grieve for the child because that child 00:21:46.46\00:21:48.85 has things going on in their body that they have no idea 00:21:48.88\00:21:51.74 how to control because of their small experience. 00:21:51.75\00:21:54.83 And with that small experience, it's going to open up a gateway 00:21:54.86\00:21:58.05 to many, many problems. 00:21:58.08\00:22:00.23 And we need to SLOW this process down. 00:22:00.26\00:22:02.54 And if your child is growing slowly, don't worry 00:22:02.57\00:22:05.24 they will grow as tall as God has made them to grow 00:22:05.27\00:22:08.25 at the proper time. 00:22:08.28\00:22:09.53 Let them grow up at 18 and 19, not 8 and 9. 00:22:09.56\00:22:13.04 Those who are growing up at 8 and 9, are going to be 00:22:13.07\00:22:15.75 old people by the time they're 40. 00:22:15.78\00:22:17.64 Those who are growing up slower, will live to 60, 70, 80 and 00:22:17.67\00:22:21.79 still have that youthful vigor. 00:22:21.82\00:22:24.25 You see, taking all these things to our systems, 00:22:24.28\00:22:27.10 we do what's called, "we use up our vital force, 00:22:27.13\00:22:30.42 our vital capacity. 00:22:30.45\00:22:31.74 Moses, we're told, that at 120, his eye was not dim 00:22:31.77\00:22:36.84 nor his natural force abated. 00:22:36.87\00:22:39.49 But burning these types of fuels in the body, 00:22:39.50\00:22:42.75 these unclean fuels of these bad foods, 00:22:42.78\00:22:45.02 and this bad lifestyle, causes an acceleration of the burning 00:22:45.05\00:22:49.94 of our natural forces... 00:22:49.97\00:22:52.18 And so that when we get to those older ages, 00:22:52.21\00:22:54.59 we've found that we've worn ourselves out by 00:22:54.62\00:22:57.72 the time we're 40s and 50s 00:22:57.75\00:22:59.88 I've known people in their 50s who were OLD people already. 00:22:59.91\00:23:03.42 And I've known people in their 80s and 90s who were 00:23:03.45\00:23:06.10 still, in many ways, young people. 00:23:06.13\00:23:08.28 I want to keep my youth as long as possible, Dr. Thrash. 00:23:08.31\00:23:11.46 Amen! 00:23:11.49\00:23:12.95 One of those diseases that we get from growing up too fast, 00:23:12.98\00:23:16.61 getting too large is that of diabetes. 00:23:16.64\00:23:19.63 Again, this is a disease now of children. 00:23:19.66\00:23:22.83 We used to call this type 2 diabetes, adult-onset diabetes, 00:23:22.86\00:23:26.94 but now, we just call it type 2, because children 00:23:26.97\00:23:30.40 are also getting diabetes. 00:23:30.43\00:23:32.55 The cure, or the way to help it is, of course, 00:23:32.58\00:23:35.41 to slow down the process of development 00:23:35.42\00:23:39.02 in the ways that Dr. Miller mentioned so that 00:23:39.05\00:23:42.70 the child does not get that priming that will be obtained 00:23:42.73\00:23:47.84 from being overweight, too tall, too soon. 00:23:47.87\00:23:53.12 We have found that even the diet of the mother 00:23:53.15\00:23:57.64 primes the cells of the unborn child 00:23:57.67\00:24:02.75 so that they are more likely to get overweight later in life 00:24:02.78\00:24:06.74 So, for the woman to eat LARGE quantities of sugar, 00:24:06.75\00:24:11.91 or LARGE quantities of fat just because the appetite 00:24:11.94\00:24:14.89 calls for it during pregnancy, is a wrong thing for the child. 00:24:14.92\00:24:19.37 Some of these things are worse for the child, than the forms of 00:24:19.40\00:24:23.29 child abuse that everybody makes a large outcry for. 00:24:23.32\00:24:27.56 So, we want to be careful to handle that in a proper way. 00:24:27.59\00:24:32.41 Now, an unrelated problem, but actually pretty common 00:24:32.44\00:24:37.80 nowadays, is head lice in children. 00:24:37.83\00:24:42.36 In schools, they will have an outbreak, 00:24:42.39\00:24:44.91 and it will go through the school. 00:24:44.94\00:24:46.29 So Dr. Miller is going to talk with you a bit about 00:24:46.32\00:24:49.38 this problem of head lice, and what we can do about it. 00:24:49.41\00:24:52.03 I lived in Hawaii for a few years, 00:24:52.06\00:24:55.94 and there, they call lice a different word... 00:24:55.95\00:24:58.78 A lot of the language in Hawaii is Hawaiian, 00:24:58.81\00:25:03.09 so they call them "ukus" 00:25:03.12\00:25:04.60 And about once a week or so, a nurse would go through, 00:25:04.63\00:25:07.98 and check every single child's hair for ukus. 00:25:08.01\00:25:11.08 And, of course, we call them head lice. 00:25:11.11\00:25:13.54 We've got head lice, body lice, and pubic lice called "crabs" 00:25:13.55\00:25:17.01 and these things are basically transmitted by 00:25:17.02\00:25:20.22 SHARING our things. 00:25:20.25\00:25:21.67 Now we're told to train our children to share, 00:25:21.70\00:25:24.54 and sharing is a good thing, 00:25:24.57\00:25:25.94 but it's sharing the hats, sharing the combs, 00:25:25.97\00:25:29.21 sharing the brushes, sharing the clothing, 00:25:29.24\00:25:31.74 that will cause us to transmit these lice... 00:25:31.77\00:25:34.88 and they are a real problem. 00:25:34.91\00:25:36.51 I remember a number of years ago, some friends of mine 00:25:36.54\00:25:39.96 at Uchee Pines had gone out in the community 00:25:39.99\00:25:41.79 and found 2 young children living in a home, 00:25:41.82\00:25:45.90 and being raised by their grandparents, 00:25:45.93\00:25:48.67 and their grandparents were willing to let them be 00:25:48.70\00:25:50.79 taken over and every once in a while, they'd come to visit 00:25:50.82\00:25:54.24 and these children's hair were unbelievably infected 00:25:54.27\00:25:57.87 with lice. 00:25:57.90\00:25:58.88 You could look and almost every hair follicle had a number 00:25:58.91\00:26:02.12 of these little white things called "nits," the little eggs 00:26:02.15\00:26:04.87 and their hair was just teeming. 00:26:04.88\00:26:07.03 And, back then, I'm afraid what we used was some 00:26:07.06\00:26:10.22 of these antilice-type shampoos which are all toxic. 00:26:10.25\00:26:14.87 They all cause problems... we do not recommend them 00:26:14.90\00:26:17.22 anymore, and they didn't work anyway. 00:26:17.23\00:26:19.98 We had tried a nit comb, and tried to comb the nits out, 00:26:20.02\00:26:22.41 and they just would not get them all until we finally just 00:26:22.45\00:26:25.35 had to cut their hair off and start over fresh. 00:26:25.39\00:26:29.02 But trouble is, we take them back to their homes, 00:26:29.05\00:26:32.64 and in their homes, the bedding would be infected, 00:26:32.65\00:26:34.74 their clothing would be infected. 00:26:34.77\00:26:36.60 When you have lice, everything has to be cleaned up. 00:26:36.63\00:26:39.61 Also, you might think that washing you hair 00:26:39.64\00:26:42.98 and staying clean will help avoid getting these lice 00:26:43.01\00:26:47.06 Lice like cleanness, especially those head lice 00:26:47.09\00:26:50.56 They LIKE clean hair. 00:26:50.59\00:26:51.87 What they do, is they get up there... 00:26:51.88\00:26:53.02 they lay some eggs, and they live by sucking your blood. 00:26:53.05\00:26:55.56 There are a few things you CAN do besides 00:26:55.59\00:26:58.29 avoiding getting them by not 00:26:58.32\00:26:59.91 sharing with people, and every once in a while 00:26:59.94\00:27:02.18 checking to make sure you don't have them. 00:27:02.21\00:27:03.41 You can take some Neem oil, mix it with some turmeric, 00:27:03.45\00:27:08.38 and make a paste, and apply that to the hair, 00:27:08.41\00:27:10.75 and leave it on for a couple of hours. 00:27:10.76\00:27:13.14 You can take some kerosene, be careful with this, 00:27:13.17\00:27:15.21 but you can take some kerosene, work that into the hair, 00:27:15.24\00:27:18.20 wrap it up with a towel, leave that for a couple of hours. 00:27:18.23\00:27:21.45 Garlic is another one... 00:27:21.48\00:27:22.69 Make some garlic paste, work that into some oil, 00:27:22.72\00:27:25.71 work that into the hair. 00:27:25.74\00:27:27.12 The lice won't like this. 00:27:27.15\00:27:28.95 There are a number of things you can do... 00:27:28.98\00:27:30.45 The body lice don't like heat. 00:27:30.48\00:27:32.51 If you have the lice, you've got to sit there and wash 00:27:32.54\00:27:34.97 EVERYTHING in your surroundings... 00:27:35.00\00:27:36.41 ALL your clothes, ALL your bedding. 00:27:36.44\00:27:38.18 Take everything out, get everything clean 00:27:38.21\00:27:40.41 so you do not re-infect yourself. 00:27:40.44\00:27:42.28 There are some other things you can do 00:27:42.31\00:27:44.07 Citronella oil... we use that for mosquitoes. 00:27:44.10\00:27:47.46 But there are lots of things we can do for 00:27:47.49\00:27:48.89 nits and lice and I like them. 00:27:48.90\00:27:51.54 I'm sure that all these things will be very helpful 00:27:51.57\00:27:54.16 for you in dealing with these problems of children. 00:27:54.19\00:27:56.78
