Some people blame all their problems on their parents. 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.49 If I had just been reared right, I wouldn't have this problem 00:00:04.52\00:00:07.65 or that problem. 00:00:07.68\00:00:08.65 Sometimes parents are blamable but sometimes they aren't. 00:00:08.66\00:00:12.34 We're going to have a discussion on some of the problems 00:00:12.37\00:00:15.36 that teens have now-a-days, and see if we can't get at the 00:00:15.39\00:00:19.27 cause of some of these so that we can have a remedy. 00:00:19.30\00:00:22.64 We hope that you will join us for this program. 00:00:22.67\00:00:24.38 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health 00:00:44.07\00:00:46.40 with Dr. Agatha Thrash, of Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:46.43\00:00:49.79 and now here is your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:49.82\00:00:52.72 There are some problems that youngsters have that 00:00:52.75\00:00:58.61 older people have that can be blamed on their 00:00:58.64\00:01:02.18 parents deficiencies. 00:01:02.21\00:01:03.48 I remember one that a lot of people tell me is that 00:01:03.51\00:01:07.95 Oh, I wish my parents had made me practice the 00:01:07.98\00:01:11.63 certain musical instrument, then I could be quite accomplished 00:01:11.66\00:01:14.97 today, but at it is, I am not accomplished on this instrument 00:01:15.00\00:01:19.89 and if only my parents had done the right thing by me. 00:01:19.92\00:01:24.21 Now sometimes the parents should be blamed, 00:01:24.24\00:01:28.06 but sometimes the child is so resistant to any kind of 00:01:28.09\00:01:33.31 suggestion by the parents that a great deal of maneuvering 00:01:33.34\00:01:37.32 has to occur by the parents in order to acquire cooperation. 00:01:37.35\00:01:42.36 To practice piano was one that I studied a good bit. 00:01:42.39\00:01:47.70 My children didn't want to learn music, 00:01:47.73\00:01:51.09 they wanted to be out of doors, they wanted to be 00:01:51.12\00:01:54.31 doing some other kind of activity, they loved to read, 00:01:54.34\00:01:57.79 they wanted to do library research, 00:01:57.82\00:01:59.86 they did not want practice a musical instrument. 00:01:59.89\00:02:02.28 Well, they had certain chores that they always had to do, 00:02:02.31\00:02:05.81 one of those was clear the table and wash the dishes. 00:02:05.84\00:02:09.64 So I would say to them, now I will do this chore 00:02:09.67\00:02:14.86 for you as long as I hear the piano going, 00:02:14.89\00:02:17.89 but once the piano stops, then you have to come 00:02:17.92\00:02:20.86 and do the chore. 00:02:20.89\00:02:21.86 So you can imagine that I heard a lot of piano practice 00:02:21.87\00:02:25.02 as long as I was still washing dishes, 00:02:25.05\00:02:27.37 but when I got through with the dish washing, 00:02:27.40\00:02:29.62 then the piano stopped too. 00:02:29.65\00:02:31.42 Then with making beds, another of my children had to make 00:02:31.45\00:02:36.14 all of the beds in the house. 00:02:36.17\00:02:37.72 I would make the beds if he would do the piano practice. 00:02:37.75\00:02:43.07 So in this way I maneuvered things so that he would do 00:02:43.10\00:02:46.74 the practicing. 00:02:46.77\00:02:47.82 Now if I had not in some way been able to require my children 00:02:47.85\00:02:53.73 to learn music, they would today not be very musical 00:02:53.76\00:02:58.24 because they were certainly not interested in disciplining 00:02:58.27\00:03:01.48 themselves to do that. 00:03:01.51\00:03:03.20 But there are certain problems that parents need to take more 00:03:03.23\00:03:08.86 action in their children's lives, and one of those is 00:03:08.89\00:03:12.19 the physical problem involving the facial complexion. 00:03:12.22\00:03:16.46 Acne can be to a large degree helped by the kind of program 00:03:16.49\00:03:21.26 that the child is on. 00:03:21.29\00:03:22.58 First if the child is not pushed so that maturity occurs 00:03:22.61\00:03:28.37 to early, there is a good chance that the child will have a 00:03:28.40\00:03:33.30 smooth complexion right from the cradle on. 00:03:33.33\00:03:38.02 How is it that one can slow down the maturation 00:03:38.05\00:03:42.88 of the person? 00:03:42.91\00:03:43.98 Well that will be the subject of some our topics 00:03:44.01\00:03:46.58 in this program. 00:03:46.62\00:03:47.78 Now with acne, once the person has it, then there are 00:03:47.82\00:03:53.36 some things that you can do that will help. 00:03:53.39\00:03:55.65 Eliminate all junk foods, whatever it may be, 00:03:55.68\00:03:59.61 just get rid of them. 00:03:59.64\00:04:01.18 Eliminate all dairy products, I have found that dairy products 00:04:01.21\00:04:06.36 are often involved in a child's acne. 00:04:07.26\00:04:10.19 If it isn't involved if you eliminate the dairy products, 00:04:10.22\00:04:13.84 or any other food, and eliminating it does not cause 00:04:13.87\00:04:18.21 a regression in the pimples or the red spots, 00:04:18.24\00:04:21.21 then you may if you wish to add that back to the diet 00:04:21.24\00:04:25.00 you may go back to it. 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.42 Now with fats, fatty foods, especially things like 00:04:26.45\00:04:31.82 peanut butter, chocolate, hot chocolate, candies 00:04:31.85\00:04:37.05 of various kinds which often have shortening of some kind 00:04:37.08\00:04:40.66 in them. 00:04:40.69\00:04:41.66 All sorts of little snack crackers, those should all be 00:04:41.67\00:04:45.63 eliminated, any kind of junk food, anything that comes from 00:04:45.66\00:04:48.89 a vending machine, most things that come from fast food places, 00:04:48.92\00:04:52.49 all of those should be eliminated. 00:04:52.52\00:04:54.62 We should build the menu from the ground up 00:04:54.65\00:04:57.80 so that all the dishes are made from the best foods we can find. 00:04:57.83\00:05:02.32 Now modern dermatologists will sometimes tell you that 00:05:02.35\00:05:07.05 food has nothing to do with acne, that it isn't involved 00:05:07.08\00:05:09.80 with it at all. 00:05:09.83\00:05:10.80 In my experience, I say that these are young men and they 00:05:10.82\00:05:14.78 have not yet had enough experience to know that 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.27 foods are sometimes involved in acne, and a person can 00:05:17.30\00:05:21.47 eliminate a certain aspect of their diet and they are 00:05:21.50\00:05:26.14 much better becoming a full vegan vegetarian 00:05:26.17\00:05:31.34 will go far in eliminating acne in some individuals. 00:05:31.37\00:05:36.09 So I recommend that for people who have acne and it can be 00:05:36.12\00:05:40.30 persons who have acne can sometimes be helped remarkably 00:05:40.33\00:05:45.30 by some changes in diet. 00:05:45.33\00:05:47.48 Also by drinking plenty of water, getting good of exercise 00:05:47.51\00:05:51.15 keeping the extremities warm, all of these things can help 00:05:51.18\00:05:55.47 with acne in some individuals, unfortunately not all of them. 00:05:55.50\00:05:59.94 But they may help, it may not totally eliminate 00:05:59.97\00:06:03.75 and so even if they get some benefit, 00:06:03.78\00:06:05.50 that can be very helpful. 00:06:05.53\00:06:07.54 Another problem that children have now-a-days that they didn't 00:06:07.57\00:06:11.02 used to have is intertrigo. 00:06:11.05\00:06:13.46 Intertrigo is a rash where two skin surfaces fit together, 00:06:13.49\00:06:19.46 so between the folds of the buttocks, under the breasts, 00:06:19.49\00:06:24.63 in any place where there are two... under the arms 00:06:24.66\00:06:28.08 where two skin surfaces maybe in close apposition 00:06:28.11\00:06:33.77 to each other. 00:06:33.81\00:06:35.00 In these instances you may have an intertrigo or a rash 00:06:35.03\00:06:39.04 which often has both the sweat as well as some infectious 00:06:39.07\00:06:44.92 agent, it can be a bacterium, it can be fungus involved 00:06:44.95\00:06:49.16 in the intertrigo. 00:06:49.19\00:06:50.61 The important thing is if the person is over weight 00:06:50.64\00:06:54.55 to have the person loose weight and to keep those surfaces 00:06:54.58\00:06:58.85 separated by some kind of fabric or garment that can be 00:06:58.88\00:07:04.31 worn that holds the surfaces apart, and that can be very 00:07:04.34\00:07:08.56 helpful for that. 00:07:08.59\00:07:09.56 One may also need to use an anti fungus remedy 00:07:09.57\00:07:13.07 such as vinegar, plain vinegar may be all that is required 00:07:13.10\00:07:17.59 if the surface is raw. 00:07:17.62\00:07:18.67 I don't have to tell you that the patient won't want you to 00:07:18.70\00:07:21.70 use vinegar and so you should not, unless you dilute it 00:07:21.73\00:07:25.94 really quite a lot such as one tablespoon in a quart 00:07:25.98\00:07:30.18 of water, then you can acidify the skin and that also helps 00:07:30.21\00:07:34.78 quite a lot. 00:07:34.81\00:07:36.05 Now these problems with teens are on the minor side 00:07:36.08\00:07:40.67 but they can be very irritating and annoying, but there is 00:07:40.70\00:07:44.70 another one teens are now involved in, they didn't used to 00:07:44.73\00:07:48.08 be involved in, and that is osteoporosis. 00:07:48.11\00:07:50.50 I have here Dr. Don Miller who is going to talk with us 00:07:50.53\00:07:54.22 about the subject of osteoporosis, 00:07:54.25\00:07:56.32 especially in young people. 00:07:56.35\00:07:58.05 Do you know that I used to play the piano? 00:07:58.08\00:08:00.30 No, I didn't! 00:08:00.33\00:08:01.50 Well, I took the lessons, and Dr. Thrash has mentioned how 00:08:01.53\00:08:04.90 it's usually the child who doesn't really stay with it... 00:08:04.93\00:08:08.48 I played that Pompa Haydenstead and Gone so many times my family 00:08:08.51\00:08:12.35 says quit playing the piano. 00:08:12.38\00:08:13.90 But she mentioned something interesting, 00:08:13.93\00:08:16.65 that her children would rather be outside playing or 00:08:16.68\00:08:19.36 doing other things, or reading. Those are good things too. 00:08:19.39\00:08:22.57 We have a major problem going on today. 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.47 A few years ago I was flying back from Germany, 00:08:25.50\00:08:27.60 and I was reading one of the airline magazines, 00:08:27.63\00:08:30.38 there was a wonderful article, the title was Sick Kids. 00:08:30.41\00:08:34.29 It said that children today have almost all the diseases 00:08:34.32\00:08:38.86 of older people, and osteoporosis was the first thing 00:08:38.89\00:08:41.76 they talked about. 00:08:41.79\00:08:42.76 It mentioned a number of things, basically three main things 00:08:42.77\00:08:47.56 that's causing the osteoporosis today. 00:08:47.59\00:08:49.60 The first thing that they mentioned, 00:08:49.63\00:08:51.08 and you are going to see this in the literature a lot 00:08:51.11\00:08:53.30 is the over use of soft drinks. 00:08:53.33\00:08:55.32 Now they will go on to say it's replacing milk in the diet. 00:08:55.35\00:08:59.49 That's not the problem, it's just the soft drinks themselves, 00:08:59.52\00:09:03.14 high in phosphoric acid, which causes... matter of fact 00:09:03.17\00:09:05.87 I think that's why they call them soft drinks. 00:09:05.90\00:09:07.85 It causes the bones to loose calcium, making them soft 00:09:07.88\00:09:11.65 and making them brittle, causing their bones to become 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.90 osteoporotic at very young ages. 00:09:13.93\00:09:16.51 So it is lots of colas, whatever the sodas are, 00:09:16.54\00:09:21.18 the children need to get off of the sodas and start drinking 00:09:21.21\00:09:24.29 more decent things like water. 00:09:24.32\00:09:26.05 Water is the best thing in the world that they can drink. 00:09:26.08\00:09:29.33 The second thing is, the junk foods that we have. 00:09:29.36\00:09:32.07 Junk foods are going to be high, almost always in sodium. 00:09:32.10\00:09:35.82 Sodium also, when it's high in the body, causes calcium 00:09:35.85\00:09:39.52 to fall, children need to get away from the high sodium foods. 00:09:39.55\00:09:43.00 Also when they eat a lot of meat products, high in protein, 00:09:43.03\00:09:47.66 when the protein goes up, the calcium goes down. 00:09:47.69\00:09:50.66 And now we are into this protein craze... 00:09:50.69\00:09:53.76 It seems in this country for people who are overweight 00:09:53.79\00:09:56.82 and children are becoming major problems with obesity. 00:09:56.85\00:10:01.93 So we want to get away from the junk foods and 00:10:01.96\00:10:04.07 the high protein foods, get away from the soft drinks, 00:10:04.10\00:10:07.32 and the third thing quite simply get them off the couch 00:10:07.35\00:10:11.10 and out the door, doing something more active. 00:10:11.13\00:10:13.08 We are finding that we are growing a generation, 00:10:13.11\00:10:15.91 maybe even for the last couple of generations, 00:10:15.94\00:10:18.80 that's fixed to the TV, which is fixed to the monitor 00:10:18.83\00:10:22.38 of the computer, which is fixed to the video games, 00:10:22.41\00:10:25.25 and children are no longer getting the exercise that 00:10:25.28\00:10:27.74 they used to get. 00:10:27.77\00:10:28.86 I remember when I was a child, no one stayed in the house 00:10:28.89\00:10:32.34 on a nice day. 00:10:32.37\00:10:33.34 Even when it was a bad day you did not want to stay in 00:10:33.37\00:10:36.61 the house, you are outside playing, whatever it was that 00:10:36.64\00:10:39.18 you were going to play but we were always in the streets. 00:10:39.21\00:10:41.34 Of course back then the streets were a little bit safer, 00:10:41.37\00:10:43.21 and I know that parents are in between a rock and a hard place 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.66 today. 00:10:46.69\00:10:47.66 Send them outside the door, it's no more safer in there 00:10:47.67\00:10:50.27 than maybe it is in front of your television, but find 00:10:50.30\00:10:52.75 a safe place and find some type of activity a child can get 00:10:52.78\00:10:57.58 involved in and this scourge of today's society of 00:10:57.61\00:11:03.25 childhood osteoporosis... 00:11:03.28\00:11:05.10 The last thing the author of this article said in this 00:11:05.13\00:11:07.45 magazine is, parents, your children are just little yous, 00:11:07.48\00:11:13.60 and his recommendation was, clean up your act, 00:11:13.63\00:11:16.05 your children are going to see you, they can do 00:11:16.08\00:11:17.98 exactly what you do. 00:11:18.02\00:11:19.41 Get your life together, show your children a good example 00:11:19.45\00:11:25.05 of health and of a healthy lifestyle, and your children 00:11:25.08\00:11:28.89 will try to emulate that pattern. 00:11:28.92\00:11:30.73 I remember one time I was sitting there at the table 00:11:30.76\00:11:33.14 when I was just a little boy, and my father was eating, 00:11:33.17\00:11:35.86 I wanted to be just like my dad, so every time he put 00:11:35.89\00:11:38.80 that spoon to his mouth, I put the spoon to my mouth 00:11:38.83\00:11:41.21 I was amazed to find out that I finished my bowl of soup 00:11:41.24\00:11:44.07 the same time he finished his bowl of soup. 00:11:44.10\00:11:46.80 Children will look at their parents and try to emulate them, 00:11:46.83\00:11:50.19 give them something to emulate, very few parents today 00:11:50.22\00:11:53.67 Dr. Thrash do that. 00:11:53.71\00:11:54.89 Yes, that is a major problem that the parents do not make 00:11:54.92\00:11:58.90 proper role models. 00:11:58.93\00:12:00.19 Another way that parents need to supervise the work of their 00:12:00.22\00:12:05.85 children is in the way that they brush the teeth. 00:12:05.88\00:12:08.94 They need to teach their child exactly how to brush the teeth, 00:12:08.97\00:12:13.27 and the proper way is with the tooth brush they do a 00:12:13.30\00:12:16.66 jiggling motion at about a 45 degree angle with the teeth. 00:12:16.69\00:12:21.12 so at the gum line, the brushing is done at that area. 00:12:21.15\00:12:27.15 Then some brushing down in this way so that almost 00:12:27.18\00:12:31.27 individual teeth are brushed, that can be very helpful 00:12:31.30\00:12:34.18 as well to remove food particles from between 00:12:34.21\00:12:37.55 the teeth. 00:12:37.58\00:12:38.55 Carious teeth are a serious problem with children 00:12:38.56\00:12:42.66 and as a child grows older, the carious teeth that they 00:12:42.69\00:12:46.77 develop in early childhood can become a thing that 00:12:46.80\00:12:51.27 shortens their life, or makes them more susceptible to 00:12:51.30\00:12:54.59 other kinds of diseases including such things as 00:12:54.62\00:12:57.55 heart disease and strokes. 00:12:57.58\00:12:59.39 The strength of the teeth is an important thing. 00:12:59.42\00:13:02.90 Flossing should never be overlooked once a child is 00:13:02.93\00:13:06.93 old enough and has permanent teeth, they should be taught 00:13:06.96\00:13:10.51 how to take off a piece of dental floss, maybe about 00:13:10.54\00:13:14.70 a foot long, wrap it around the fingers and learn how to 00:13:14.73\00:13:18.98 tease it between the teeth and remove everything that is 00:13:19.01\00:13:23.19 between the teeth, including the plaque that builds up 00:13:23.22\00:13:26.12 between meals and overnight. 00:13:26.15\00:13:28.25 So the floss should actually be rubbed against both tooth 00:13:28.28\00:13:33.81 surfaces in between the teeth, so it is rubbed against this 00:13:33.84\00:13:37.16 tooth and it is rubbed against this tooth to remove the plaque 00:13:37.19\00:13:40.55 that might be building up there. 00:13:40.58\00:13:42.29 Dried fruits are very important as a caries promoter, 00:13:42.32\00:13:50.16 so dried fruit should always be followed by brushing and 00:13:50.19\00:13:55.50 flossing. Dried fruit can be used for a meal 00:13:55.53\00:13:59.78 and two or three times a day should both floss and brush. 00:13:59.81\00:14:05.22 Especially important is that the third meal, if there is a 00:14:05.25\00:14:09.38 third meal of the day, that meal be brushed and flossed 00:14:09.41\00:14:14.61 after so that there will not be a build up overnight 00:14:14.64\00:14:17.75 of acids inside the mouth. 00:14:17.78\00:14:20.02 Now an appeal for a two meal plan for children, most children 00:14:20.05\00:14:25.80 in today's world need only two meals a day, 00:14:25.83\00:14:28.70 that's at beginning about the age of two or three. 00:14:28.73\00:14:32.22 You can train the child to a two meal plan that instantly 00:14:32.25\00:14:37.71 diminishes the risk of getting cavities. 00:14:37.74\00:14:40.40 The more times a day that a person eats, the greater the 00:14:40.43\00:14:43.76 risk of getting cavities. 00:14:43.79\00:14:45.36 This can be minimized by flossing and brushing 00:14:45.39\00:14:49.78 that a person can do. 00:14:49.81\00:14:51.50 It's an important thing for us to know that our children 00:14:51.53\00:14:58.22 today are very much overweight, parents in fact they control 00:14:58.25\00:15:05.37 the weight of the child, and they should be assertive 00:15:05.40\00:15:10.00 in this area and make certain that their children are not 00:15:10.03\00:15:13.04 overweight, so I've asked Dr. Miller to talk with you 00:15:13.07\00:15:16.33 about this problem in teens and children. 00:15:16.36\00:15:19.19 I remember when I was in grade school there was 00:15:19.22\00:15:21.92 a very fleeting instance of an overweight child 00:15:21.95\00:15:26.93 and they were always the brunt of all of the jokes and they are 00:15:26.96\00:15:31.11 always on the low side of the pecking order, which was really 00:15:31.14\00:15:34.55 unfortunate things for the poor children. 00:15:34.58\00:15:36.58 Things haven't changed as much as being on the lower end 00:15:36.61\00:15:40.43 of the pecking order, but it certainly has changed in 00:15:40.46\00:15:43.11 how many people fall into that category now in our schools. 00:15:43.14\00:15:46.44 Young people are plagued today, it is a pandemic, of basically 00:15:46.48\00:15:51.49 a problem with the western world of obesity in children. 00:15:51.52\00:15:54.76 Of course that opens the door to many many other problems 00:15:54.79\00:15:57.98 and they are going to come down the line. 00:15:58.01\00:15:59.13 What causes obesity in children, well, it basically takes it's 00:15:59.16\00:16:03.70 very beginning in infancy, the way a child is fed. 00:16:03.73\00:16:07.67 It seems like mothers now are going more and more away from 00:16:07.70\00:16:11.30 breast feeding and going into putting them on to the formulas 00:16:11.33\00:16:15.07 and the formulas are often based on some animal products 00:16:15.10\00:16:19.07 in there which is going to accelerate the growth 00:16:19.10\00:16:20.85 and as the child grows more they are weaned on to more 00:16:20.88\00:16:24.91 animal products, which are all basically made. 00:16:24.95\00:16:27.85 You think back in the 1950's the average cow was producing 00:16:27.88\00:16:32.59 about 12 quarts of milk per day, now it's up to around 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.96 23 or 24 quarts a day. 00:16:35.99\00:16:38.16 There is something that has changed drastically, 00:16:38.19\00:16:40.82 in the 50's the 12 quart of milk cow was one of the champion 00:16:40.85\00:16:45.30 cows, it was more like 8 to 9 quarts. 00:16:45.33\00:16:47.46 All of these growth hormones are passing into the child 00:16:47.49\00:16:52.72 causing them to get more weight, also the junk foods of today, 00:16:52.75\00:16:57.34 they are empty calories, they have a lot of calories, 00:16:57.37\00:17:00.03 they are going to go straight to the wrong places of the body, 00:17:00.06\00:17:02.98 we need to get away from there. 00:17:03.01\00:17:04.47 But another one of the main problems is the way they spend 00:17:04.50\00:17:08.55 their lives, they spend their lives in front of monitors 00:17:08.58\00:17:12.14 basically television and computer monitors. 00:17:12.17\00:17:14.06 They have found that children who watch television have a 00:17:14.09\00:17:19.75 slower metabolism, than a child who is sort of sitting down 00:17:19.78\00:17:23.53 doing nothing else besides watching television. 00:17:23.56\00:17:26.05 Metabolism gets very slow, which means that you are going to 00:17:26.08\00:17:29.89 start getting very large. 00:17:29.92\00:17:31.23 I've often been asked this question after I've said 00:17:31.26\00:17:35.17 something like this, well do you mean watching 3ABN 00:17:35.20\00:17:38.35 is not good for my child? 00:17:38.38\00:17:40.79 I want you to do a little experiment, watch this program 00:17:40.82\00:17:44.67 and mark on a piece of paper for the time that you are 00:17:44.70\00:17:48.60 watching this half hour, how many times the scene changes, 00:17:48.63\00:17:52.55 then the next time that you are in a department store that 00:17:52.58\00:17:55.65 has one of those big banks of televisions, 00:17:55.68\00:17:58.09 I want you to stand back so you aren't infected by 00:17:58.12\00:18:01.52 what they are showing, and mark down, have a stop watch 00:18:01.55\00:18:05.01 or a watch with a second hand, and see how many times the scene 00:18:05.04\00:18:09.04 changes in even one minute. 00:18:09.07\00:18:11.76 You are going to find the scene changes many many times 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.98 sometimes every three to four seconds you have a different 00:18:15.01\00:18:17.75 scene, a different shot, a different camera, 00:18:17.78\00:18:19.49 a different whole situation, and when this happens 00:18:19.52\00:18:22.43 the mind finally gets to the point where it says, 00:18:22.46\00:18:24.44 we are out of here, it goes into a sort of delta wave 00:18:24.47\00:18:29.01 pattern, you are not processing the information which sometimes 00:18:29.04\00:18:34.52 is good, but the bad part of it is, if you are seeing it 00:18:34.55\00:18:36.98 it is going somewhere in this head. 00:18:37.01\00:18:39.15 When you watch your television like this, it slows down your 00:18:39.18\00:18:43.17 process and you start getting a larger frame, but also 00:18:43.20\00:18:47.11 as you are watching these programs they are advertising 00:18:47.14\00:18:50.26 things that are made to promote obesity. 00:18:50.29\00:18:53.33 They are not going to say eat these things and it is going to 00:18:53.36\00:18:55.77 make you fat, no that's not what they are saying, 00:18:55.80\00:18:57.79 but they are going to make you fat, they are going to be high 00:18:57.82\00:18:59.87 in fat, high in sugar, high in sodium, high is whatever it is 00:18:59.90\00:19:04.71 that causes our bodies to grow larger. 00:19:04.74\00:19:07.08 So we need to stay away from those types of things that 00:19:07.11\00:19:09.72 causes a child... I've been in grocery stores 00:19:09.75\00:19:11.83 and you see the mother pushing the child through the isles 00:19:11.86\00:19:15.03 and pretty soon they come to a certain product that 00:19:15.06\00:19:17.12 apparently that child saw on cartoons just this morning, 00:19:17.15\00:19:20.33 I WANT THAT, and they will throw a tantrum until the mother 00:19:20.36\00:19:23.53 puts two boxes of it into the cart, and the child is now 00:19:23.56\00:19:27.19 satisfied. 00:19:27.22\00:19:28.55 The trouble is that very food is going to cause them to be 00:19:28.58\00:19:32.27 obese, which is going to make them handicapped in many ways 00:19:32.30\00:19:37.79 for the rest of their lives, both psychologically, 00:19:37.82\00:19:40.33 emotionally, socially, physically, every way that 00:19:40.36\00:19:45.26 you can think of. 00:19:45.29\00:19:46.26 Obesity is not a good thing, now if you are trying to go 00:19:46.27\00:19:49.31 assume a wrestler, go right ahead, but I would suggest 00:19:49.34\00:19:52.10 that we do not turn our children into Sumo wrestlers in their 00:19:52.13\00:19:56.12 infancy and in their childhood and in their teen years, 00:19:56.15\00:19:58.92 you are just short changing them in their lives, 00:19:58.95\00:20:01.67 so get them out exercising, get them on good food 00:20:01.70\00:20:04.57 and we might eliminate this problem. 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.76 It would certainly go far toward helping with that. 00:20:06.79\00:20:09.43 While I have not seen a child have a heart attack, I have seen 00:20:09.46\00:20:15.82 children with hardening of the arteries at a very early age. 00:20:15.85\00:20:20.69 We used to say that hardening of the arteries was a problem 00:20:20.72\00:20:23.54 with advanced old age, but now we are seeing it in children. 00:20:23.57\00:20:29.21 In fact, even in World War II there was not an autopsy done 00:20:29.24\00:20:34.27 on an American soldier that didn't show rather advanced 00:20:34.30\00:20:38.62 hardening of the arteries, reports are rather stunning 00:20:38.65\00:20:42.84 in this regard. 00:20:42.87\00:20:44.24 We want to do what we can to keep our children from getting 00:20:44.27\00:20:48.04 heart disease later in life. 00:20:48.07\00:20:49.86 We are seeing heart attacks earlier and earlier, 00:20:49.89\00:20:54.57 and the more the person weighs, the greater the chance is that 00:20:54.60\00:20:57.55 they will get both the heart attack and a stroke, 00:20:57.58\00:21:00.11 so we are combating that by combating the wrong habits 00:21:00.14\00:21:04.98 in childhood. 00:21:05.01\00:21:06.10 Make certain that your child's cholesterol is not high, 00:21:06.13\00:21:09.78 that the triglycerides are not high, blood sugar is not high, 00:21:09.81\00:21:13.35 and that their homocysteine level is not high, they can get 00:21:13.38\00:21:17.29 high homocysteine even very early in life. 00:21:17.32\00:21:22.99 There also may be some other markers of potential problems 00:21:23.02\00:21:27.55 in the future, Fibrinogen may be high, C-reactive protein 00:21:27.58\00:21:32.74 may be high, these are all laboratory tests, 00:21:32.77\00:21:35.91 one can easily obtain these from ordinary clinical 00:21:35.94\00:21:41.46 laboratories, such as in a hospital, or one of the 00:21:41.49\00:21:44.31 stand alone laboratories that are very freely available 00:21:44.34\00:21:48.32 now-a-days. 00:21:48.35\00:21:50.45 Now along with these dietary problems and physical problems 00:21:50.48\00:21:55.32 comes some mental problems such as depression. 00:21:55.35\00:21:57.98 Depression is childhood is becoming far more common, 00:21:58.01\00:22:01.32 even in infancy, and I would like Dr. Miller to talk with us 00:22:01.35\00:22:05.16 a little bit about the subject of Depression in Childhood. 00:22:05.19\00:22:08.68 I mentioned a little bit ago about this article I read 00:22:08.71\00:22:11.82 in this magazine in the airline flying out of Germany. 00:22:11.85\00:22:14.68 One of the thing that he mentioned was depression, 00:22:14.71\00:22:17.55 and he said something so startling in this article 00:22:17.58\00:22:20.13 he said that children today... your average child out there 00:22:20.16\00:22:23.22 in the homes has more anxiety than a child who is a 00:22:23.25\00:22:27.54 psychiatric patient in the 1950's, 00:22:27.57\00:22:30.02 there is something gone wrong with our society. 00:22:30.05\00:22:33.01 I read an interesting book a few years ago and it's... 00:22:33.04\00:22:36.69 Forgive the subject, or the title, it's called On Killing, 00:22:36.72\00:22:40.27 basically it was a book on the subject of killing, 00:22:40.30\00:22:43.87 not murder, but basically the mindset of the 00:22:43.90\00:22:48.85 military man going to the Revolutionary War up to Vietnam. 00:22:48.88\00:22:53.32 I would say that now it goes beyond Vietnam to the 00:22:53.35\00:22:55.55 other wars that have come since then, and basically 00:22:55.58\00:22:59.03 what they found out is back in the Revolutionary War, 00:22:59.07\00:23:02.04 the war of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, 00:23:02.07\00:23:07.07 even Korean War, that only about 10% of the soldiers 00:23:07.10\00:23:11.11 in combat actually aimed their gun with the intent to take 00:23:11.14\00:23:14.84 a man's life, because there is something in a human body 00:23:14.87\00:23:19.35 that says this isn't what I want to be doing right now. 00:23:19.38\00:23:22.41 They found in Vietnam it was reversed 90% did. 00:23:22.44\00:23:26.38 What made the difference in all these years? 00:23:26.41\00:23:29.91 There is one instance in this book, it talked about a 00:23:29.94\00:23:33.89 Civil War Confederate soldier who was at the 00:23:33.92\00:23:37.48 Battle of Gettysburg. 00:23:37.51\00:23:39.34 As he was marching through that field, across that 00:23:39.37\00:23:42.77 long field, up to that wall, they said that upon his death, 00:23:42.80\00:23:47.40 because he was killed in this battle, they checked his weapon 00:23:47.43\00:23:50.79 and they found 26 loads in his weapon. 00:23:50.82\00:23:54.65 That means that he would walk a ways, stop and ram another 00:23:54.68\00:23:57.60 one down there, walk a ways, stop, ram another one, 00:23:57.63\00:24:00.89 he never fired his gun one time. 00:24:00.92\00:24:03.18 Something has changed, we feel like the depression we have 00:24:03.21\00:24:08.37 right now is because we have changed in our whole society. 00:24:08.40\00:24:12.01 We have things called situational ethics today, 00:24:12.04\00:24:15.38 it depends on the situation, how you are going to respond 00:24:15.41\00:24:18.15 to something. 00:24:18.18\00:24:19.15 We find that most teenagers feel like sometimes lying 00:24:19.16\00:24:25.59 is necessary, it depends on the situation, they find that 00:24:25.62\00:24:29.76 suicide is a viable option for their problems. 00:24:29.79\00:24:33.88 There are these things creeping into the society today, 00:24:33.94\00:24:36.84 and I believe it's the society at fault because we are giving 00:24:36.88\00:24:39.95 them false messages. 00:24:39.98\00:24:40.96 They are watching lifestyles on television which are totally 00:24:40.99\00:24:45.52 aberrant, totally foreign to the human organism, 00:24:45.55\00:24:49.44 you see, there is something inside this body that says 00:24:49.47\00:24:52.39 do this, do this right, but they receive these mixed signals. 00:24:52.42\00:24:55.77 A number of years ago when I was in the Marine Corp we 00:24:55.80\00:24:59.75 had a video monitor rolled into our office because they 00:24:59.78\00:25:04.85 had made an advertisement for the Marine Corp, and we wanted 00:25:04.88\00:25:08.56 to watch it to see how it was because I was in Public Affairs, 00:25:08.59\00:25:11.25 it was in the middle of the day, and you know what is on in the 00:25:11.28\00:25:14.92 middle of the day on anything besides 3ABN, it's Soap Operas. 00:25:14.95\00:25:18.56 They filmed this thing... so they put the video into the 00:25:18.59\00:25:23.70 machine, and we watched, of course we got a big section of 00:25:23.73\00:25:27.52 Soap Opera before the add came on because they didn't 00:25:27.55\00:25:29.73 know exactly when it was going to come on, so we sat there, 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.90 it was about 5 minutes worth of Soap Opera before it came on. 00:25:32.93\00:25:36.81 What I saw in that 5 minutes did not leave me for months 00:25:36.84\00:25:41.43 afterwards, there was one bad situation after another 00:25:41.46\00:25:44.86 bad situation, and it made me depressed just to watch it. 00:25:44.89\00:25:48.48 We find that the atmosphere of society that the person is 00:25:48.51\00:25:53.32 growing up in today is depressing. 00:25:53.35\00:25:55.20 Food is depressing, the lifestyle is depressing, 00:25:55.23\00:25:58.30 the fact that there is just no ambition, no drive to get on, 00:25:58.33\00:26:02.54 there is nothing better. 00:26:02.57\00:26:03.86 We are finding today that God has been taken out of the 00:26:03.89\00:26:06.70 schools, out of the homes, out of everywhere, 00:26:06.73\00:26:08.91 and when you are in that situation you cannot help 00:26:08.94\00:26:12.46 but be depressed, so what we need to do is get children back 00:26:12.49\00:26:16.01 in to knowing that there is someone out there that 00:26:16.04\00:26:18.37 really does care. 00:26:18.41\00:26:19.38 We've got to many broken homes, I'm from a broken home, 00:26:19.39\00:26:21.70 broken homes cause a child to loose their bearings, 00:26:21.73\00:26:25.54 and if they have no place else to turn to, 00:26:25.57\00:26:27.65 they are going to turn to things, and we have been seeing 00:26:27.68\00:26:29.83 a lot in the press in the last months about what's happening 00:26:29.86\00:26:33.11 with the anti-depressive drugs for children. 00:26:33.14\00:26:36.80 They are leading them to suicide, which they already 00:26:36.83\00:26:39.85 feel as a viable option Dr. Thrash, 00:26:39.88\00:26:41.91 depression is a major problem with children today. 00:26:41.94\00:26:44.80 Yes it is, and one good thing that we know that can help 00:26:44.83\00:26:47.73 depression is exercise. 00:26:47.76\00:26:49.91 If a person gets out in the sunshine and exercises 00:26:49.94\00:26:53.84 vigorously, that goes far toward taking away the depression, 00:26:53.87\00:26:58.65 and if a person eats a very simple diet, that goes far 00:26:58.68\00:27:02.81 toward taking away the depression. 00:27:02.84\00:27:04.67 If the relationship between the parents and the child 00:27:04.70\00:27:08.08 is a very good one, that also goes far toward helping a person 00:27:08.11\00:27:12.52 to get rid of a depression. 00:27:12.55\00:27:14.22 Now parents sometimes feel that they have no control 00:27:14.25\00:27:19.47 over these matters, but often it is because they 00:27:19.50\00:27:23.63 don't really try. 00:27:23.66\00:27:24.75 I you will make an attempt to get close to your child, 00:27:24.78\00:27:29.94 to have your child to love you, and that you obviously love them 00:27:29.97\00:27:34.59 and that what you are doing for them, the council that you 00:27:34.62\00:27:37.50 give them is for their good, they will often be very 00:27:37.53\00:27:41.96 cooperative with any kind of suggestion that you give. 00:27:41.99\00:27:46.10 If your child loves you, they will usually want to do 00:27:46.13\00:27:49.81 what you want them to do. 00:27:49.84\00:27:51.04 I hope that some of these suggestions will find a good 00:27:51.07\00:27:54.56 lodging for you, and it will help you with your child. 00:27:54.59\00:27:59.44
