A happy stomach goes far towards making a happy person. 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.72 If you would like to have a happy stomach 00:00:04.75\00:00:08.08 we have some tips for you that may help you in that line. 00:00:08.11\00:00:11.02 So if you would like to happily join us 00:00:11.05\00:00:14.04 we'd happily accept your company. 00:00:14.07\00:00:15.04 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health 00:00:35.63\00:00:38.39 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:38.40\00:00:41.73 and now here is your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:41.76\00:00:44.88 This happy stomach is not too difficult, 00:00:46.77\00:00:52.21 but the stomach is probably the most abused organ 00:00:52.24\00:00:57.04 in the entire body. 00:00:57.07\00:00:58.44 As infants we start right away teaching our children 00:00:58.47\00:01:02.65 that they can get comfort from eating, 00:01:02.68\00:01:08.18 so any time they are uncomfortable in any way 00:01:08.21\00:01:11.99 or they are crying or upset, we simply give them 00:01:12.02\00:01:16.35 something to eat. 00:01:16.38\00:01:17.35 Some times it is not the very best since it may be 00:01:17.36\00:01:20.60 not at meal time. 00:01:20.61\00:01:21.60 They may get something that we would consider a snack, 00:01:21.63\00:01:25.31 or even junk food, and of course we don't want to do that. 00:01:25.32\00:01:29.03 So the resulting inflammation in the stomach can cause 00:01:29.06\00:01:33.67 the child to be just a cranky and irritable child. 00:01:33.70\00:01:38.23 and it may even have a variety of difficulties with the 00:01:38.26\00:01:43.56 appetite and their food habits and they may have 00:01:43.59\00:01:48.25 some problems with constipation and diarrhea, 00:01:48.28\00:01:53.86 pain in the abdomen. 00:01:53.89\00:01:56.41 These are common childhood complaints and unfortunately 00:01:56.44\00:02:00.77 they often persist into adult life as well. 00:02:00.80\00:02:03.40 Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach, 00:02:03.43\00:02:07.20 it looks when we actually put a scope down, 00:02:07.21\00:02:11.19 or we open the stomach up, it looks as if it may be raw beef. 00:02:11.20\00:02:17.23 It may be totally red, it may be bloody, Aspirin, other drugs 00:02:17.24\00:02:23.63 can cause a gastritis, but so can irregular eating habits. 00:02:23.64\00:02:27.98 Eating off schedule, drinking a lot with one's meal, 00:02:28.01\00:02:31.40 especially if it is very hot or very cold, 00:02:31.43\00:02:34.18 those can cause a big problem for the stomach. 00:02:34.21\00:02:37.82 Eating when one is upset or very tired, sad, or angry, 00:02:37.85\00:02:45.50 always the person who has any strong emotion, 00:02:45.51\00:02:48.89 they should wait to eat until these emotions have subsided 00:02:48.92\00:02:53.89 or been resolved. 00:02:53.92\00:02:55.01 It's not at all wrong if you simply decide to skip a meal 00:02:55.04\00:03:00.04 because of some strong emotion or excess fatigue 00:03:00.07\00:03:04.49 and just wait until you are more rested. 00:03:04.52\00:03:07.55 Does that mean to wait an hour or two and then take your meal? 00:03:07.58\00:03:11.68 Not usually... usually the best thing is 00:03:11.72\00:03:15.23 for you to skip the meal entirely, not eat again until 00:03:15.26\00:03:18.40 your next scheduled meal. 00:03:18.43\00:03:20.75 O course two meals a day are the best for the stomach of any. 00:03:20.78\00:03:24.49 So we want to obey these laws that we know and stick strictly 00:03:24.53\00:03:30.66 to them so that we can have a very happy stomach. 00:03:30.69\00:03:33.61 One of the problems that we can get with the stomach 00:03:33.62\00:03:37.08 is called a hiatus hernia... Hernia because the stomach 00:03:37.11\00:03:42.41 herniates back up into the chest from the abdomen, 00:03:42.42\00:03:47.10 the diaphragm separates the chest from the abdomen 00:03:47.13\00:03:51.49 and the esophagus comes down, goes through the diaphragm 00:03:51.52\00:03:58.22 and immediately forms the stomach. 00:03:58.25\00:04:00.88 Now when it forms the stomach, the stomach is an 00:04:00.91\00:04:04.41 abdominal organ, but if there is increased intra-abdominal 00:04:04.44\00:04:09.76 pressure, then the stomach can push back up through the 00:04:09.79\00:04:14.07 hiatus in the diaphragm so it is called a hiatal hernia. 00:04:14.10\00:04:19.20 Now because if the stomach pushes back up through the 00:04:19.23\00:04:23.05 diaphragm it may bathe the lower end of the esophagus 00:04:23.06\00:04:26.52 with gastric juices. 00:04:26.55\00:04:28.19 They are very powerful and the esophagus is not designed 00:04:28.20\00:04:33.45 so that it can have that very strong acid, 00:04:33.48\00:04:39.12 and the very strong digestants that the stomach is designed 00:04:39.15\00:04:43.59 to have. 00:04:43.62\00:04:44.63 So with these irritating substances from the stomach 00:04:44.66\00:04:48.46 in the esophagus, we can actually get an ulceration 00:04:48.49\00:04:51.92 of the esophagus because of that. 00:04:51.95\00:04:54.10 So esophagitis, and gastritis, as well as the discomfort 00:04:54.13\00:04:58.38 of the stomach pushing back up into the chest. 00:04:58.41\00:05:02.07 If we do x-ray studies on just our general population 00:05:02.10\00:05:07.16 we find that between 30 and 40% of the population at large 00:05:07.19\00:05:11.90 will have this kind of sliding hernia where a bit of the 00:05:11.93\00:05:16.23 stomach goes back up into the esophagus. 00:05:16.26\00:05:18.65 If the person is asymptomatic, they don't have pain, 00:05:18.68\00:05:22.62 or indigestion, or heartburn, then that probably means 00:05:22.63\00:05:26.67 they have a very strong cardiac sphincter. 00:05:26.70\00:05:29.97 That cardiac sphincter is the tight muscle at the top of the 00:05:29.98\00:05:34.79 stomach that keeps material from the stomach from going 00:05:34.82\00:05:38.41 back up into the esophagus. 00:05:38.44\00:05:40.64 All of these things are helpful things to know but increased 00:05:40.65\00:05:45.16 intra-abdominal pressure can come from being overweight, 00:05:45.17\00:05:48.37 from overeating, from having intestinal gas, from having 00:05:48.38\00:05:52.75 abdominal fat, pregnancy, from a tumor inside the abdomen. 00:05:52.76\00:05:58.41 So all of these things are helpful things to know 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.65 that can make it so that you do not need 00:06:01.66\00:06:04.95 to have the problem that you may have with a hiatus hernia. 00:06:04.98\00:06:11.54 Now the next thing that we are going to talk about is something 00:06:11.98\00:06:16.05 that I think you will be very interested in, it's a 00:06:16.08\00:06:18.54 common thing and Dr. Donald Miller is going to talk with you 00:06:18.57\00:06:21.81 about that. 00:06:21.84\00:06:22.81 You know it's funny Dr. Thrash we talk about these subjects... 00:06:22.82\00:06:26.01 it strikes me that if I were to give this lecture in Zambia 00:06:26.04\00:06:30.17 or Zimbabwe, or India, they would all sit and look at me 00:06:30.20\00:06:33.71 with blank stares saying, what are you talking about. 00:06:33.74\00:06:35.64 Because most of our problems that we talk about are 00:06:35.67\00:06:39.58 problems of the west, of our opulent lifestyles, 00:06:39.61\00:06:43.43 of our rich lifestyles. 00:06:43.46\00:06:44.72 Peptic Ulcer is one of those things that people usually 00:06:44.75\00:06:50.14 only get when the live in the west. 00:06:50.17\00:06:51.27 It's a terrible problem, it can be a life threatening problem 00:06:51.30\00:06:56.05 if you start getting a bleeding ulcer that a person could 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.77 bleed to death from. 00:06:58.80\00:06:59.77 But basically a peptic ulcer is the result of this 00:06:59.78\00:07:06.25 mucous barrier that we have all the way through our 00:07:06.26\00:07:09.47 alimentary canal that protects ourselves from the very foods 00:07:09.50\00:07:13.29 that we eat and the digestion thereof. 00:07:13.32\00:07:16.32 Let's take for example we eat some protein, 00:07:16.35\00:07:20.82 which is basically digested in the stomach. 00:07:20.85\00:07:23.06 The way we digest protein is with hydrochloric acid. 00:07:23.09\00:07:26.05 The interesting thing is the stomach itself is made up of 00:07:26.06\00:07:30.05 protein, so how do we keep from eating our stomach 00:07:30.08\00:07:33.98 with the same thing that's eating on the protein 00:07:34.01\00:07:36.26 that we are eating? 00:07:36.29\00:07:37.26 We've got a mucous barrier that protects the stomach 00:07:37.27\00:07:40.66 from it's own digestive juices, but what happens to that 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.84 protective barrier if we take things like vinegar, spices, 00:07:44.87\00:07:50.45 aspirin, it burns a whole or washes it away 00:07:50.48\00:07:54.96 and then the stomach lining itself is susceptible to the 00:07:54.99\00:07:59.38 hydrochloric acid. 00:07:59.41\00:08:00.76 For years the treatment for peptic ulcers was to drink 00:08:00.79\00:08:08.12 a glass of milk, naturally right away that buffered 00:08:08.15\00:08:12.06 the hydrochloric acid and it took the pain away. 00:08:12.09\00:08:15.59 But when you take down that much Calcium, 00:08:15.62\00:08:18.01 what happens is the body produces gastrin, 00:08:18.04\00:08:20.56 gastrin says we need some more hydrochloric acid 00:08:20.59\00:08:23.24 and so a short time later the hydrochloric acid 00:08:23.27\00:08:26.46 goes back up, you've got the problem back all over again. 00:08:26.49\00:08:29.10 Milk is not the solution, bland food is the solution. 00:08:29.13\00:08:32.81 You may think, or you may have a problem with too much 00:08:32.84\00:08:37.03 acid production, there's a good way to find out whether 00:08:37.06\00:08:39.47 your problem is over production of hydrochloric acid. 00:08:39.50\00:08:42.49 When you are having the pain, take the juice of a lemon 00:08:42.52\00:08:46.37 and mix it with a small amount of water and drink it. 00:08:46.40\00:08:49.09 If your pain goes up, you are producing to much acid. 00:08:49.12\00:08:52.25 A good way to put out the pain is to drink some water 00:08:52.28\00:08:56.18 or eat some more food which will neutralize or dilute the 00:08:56.21\00:09:01.21 acid that is out there. 00:09:01.22\00:09:02.19 But I would not recommend that you say that you ate breakfast 00:09:02.20\00:09:06.46 and two hours later you got the pain, 00:09:06.49\00:09:07.79 don't eat food then because that is just going to 00:09:07.82\00:09:09.81 exacerbate the problem on down the line, 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.29 you need to do other things to modify your problem. 00:09:12.32\00:09:14.98 So the problem is to much acid production, 00:09:15.01\00:09:18.47 you are eating a whole... Or they found some people 00:09:18.50\00:09:20.76 who take aspirin... they've looked in the stomach's 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.96 and found an aspirin stuck to the stomach wall, 00:09:22.99\00:09:25.05 burning a whole right through it, and that's a very 00:09:25.08\00:09:27.98 bad problem. 00:09:28.02\00:09:28.99 So people who take aspirin, steroids, tobacco, alcohol, 00:09:29.00\00:09:33.52 all of these things will help to promote peptic ulcers. 00:09:33.55\00:09:38.06 So what do you do for a peptic ulcer? 00:09:38.09\00:09:40.84 You need to eat more alkaline foods, 00:09:40.87\00:09:44.82 potatoes are extremely good. 00:09:44.83\00:09:47.01 As a matter of fact we would recommend that you take some 00:09:47.04\00:09:48.78 potato peelings from the white potato and you boil them, 00:09:48.81\00:09:52.44 and make a thick broth out of those and drink that. 00:09:52.47\00:09:56.78 Extremely good for peptic ulcers. 00:09:56.81\00:09:58.59 One of the best things for peptic ulcers is cabbage juice. 00:09:58.62\00:10:02.49 Just get a juicer if you can, and juice some cabbage. 00:10:02.52\00:10:06.54 If you can't get a cabbage juicer, just eat some 00:10:06.57\00:10:08.76 raw cabbage, you are going to get some of the effect 00:10:08.77\00:10:10.94 of the juice in your stomach which is extremely good 00:10:10.97\00:10:13.71 for that particular problem. 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.09 Stress is a great causer of peptic ulcers. 00:10:15.12\00:10:21.29 We found that people who have... 00:10:21.32\00:10:23.95 There is a story that I once read about a man who had been 00:10:23.98\00:10:28.43 shot by a shotgun in the stomach and the wound did not 00:10:28.46\00:10:32.05 properly heal, and so the doctor placed a scope in there 00:10:32.08\00:10:35.81 and he could observe what was going on, and he observed many 00:10:35.84\00:10:38.45 interesting things, especially when the person was upset 00:10:38.48\00:10:41.63 he could see that the blood would start oozing out 00:10:41.66\00:10:45.12 of the stomach wall. 00:10:45.15\00:10:46.44 So this stress problem, the best thing to do for stress 00:10:46.47\00:10:49.43 is to get some exercise. 00:10:49.46\00:10:50.65 A very easy thing to remember: "Exercise neutralizes stress. " 00:10:50.66\00:10:56.17 Stress is a good thing, but for peptic ulcers, 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.90 you have to find a way to get rid of the stress. 00:10:58.93\00:11:01.61 Very important is to eat small meals. 00:11:01.64\00:11:06.20 When we eat large meals it causes the body to rally 00:11:06.23\00:11:09.05 in more forces to digest food, hydrochloric acid goes up, 00:11:09.08\00:11:12.80 you have a compromise down there, so the best thing is 00:11:12.83\00:11:16.49 eat small meals. 00:11:16.52\00:11:17.69 Three small meals a day if you must, two small meals is better. 00:11:17.72\00:11:21.33 Dark green leafy vegetables are extremely good 00:11:21.36\00:11:26.04 for peptic ulcer, so go out and grow them and eat them. 00:11:26.07\00:11:31.01 Make sure your food is extremely well cooked, 00:11:31.04\00:11:33.60 especially your grains. 00:11:33.63\00:11:34.78 This is one time that we would recommend when you have an 00:11:34.79\00:11:37.85 active peptic ulcer, perhaps some well cooked white rice 00:11:37.86\00:11:41.91 would be ok, but even better would be millet. 00:11:41.94\00:11:44.84 Millet is extremely bland food and it's quite good for us 00:11:44.87\00:11:49.33 in many other ways. 00:11:49.36\00:11:50.45 Our fiber needs to be increased in the diet, 00:11:50.46\00:11:54.36 that goes without saying no matter what our problem is, 00:11:54.37\00:11:56.79 we need to get more fiber in the diets. 00:11:56.82\00:11:59.51 Chew your food well. 00:11:59.52\00:12:01.53 When you don't chew your food well, you have large amounts 00:12:01.56\00:12:04.47 of food in your stomach that is un-chewed, which means 00:12:04.50\00:12:07.09 it is going to be very hard to digest it. 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.78 The body puts in a herculean effort to digest the food 00:12:08.81\00:12:12.50 through the action of the stomach, which is going to 00:12:12.53\00:12:15.20 cause more acid to be produced and more trauma to the stomach. 00:12:15.23\00:12:18.69 So chew your food to a cream before you turn it loose is the 00:12:18.72\00:12:22.54 best way. 00:12:22.57\00:12:23.87 I don't say count, chew 30 times. 00:12:23.90\00:12:27.26 It's interesting when you try to do that, you sort of 00:12:27.29\00:12:30.67 loose track of what you are doing. 00:12:30.70\00:12:31.83 Here is what I would recommend, when you are eating your meal 00:12:31.86\00:12:34.66 you sit down and you get your fork full or your spoonful 00:12:34.67\00:12:38.11 of food, put it in your mouth, and they lay the 00:12:38.14\00:12:40.75 instrument down and fold your hands, sit on your hands, 00:12:40.78\00:12:44.62 put your hands behind your neck, do something 00:12:44.65\00:12:46.27 with your hands and chew your food. 00:12:46.30\00:12:48.75 We have a tendency that when we get a fork full of food 00:12:48.78\00:12:51.50 and put it in our mouth, we dive right back down for 00:12:51.53\00:12:54.28 the next fork full. 00:12:54.31\00:12:55.38 While you are getting that ready and is almost ready, 00:12:55.41\00:12:58.46 your mind sees this, it can even be subconscious 00:12:58.49\00:13:01.66 and all of a sudden that food is on the back of your tongue. 00:13:01.69\00:13:03.99 That half chewed olive, that big piece of tomato, 00:13:04.02\00:13:07.47 whatever it is ready, and all of a sudden it dives down 00:13:07.48\00:13:10.09 the gullet and pretty soon it is in your stomach 00:13:10.12\00:13:12.76 and your body says what are you doing to us down here? 00:13:12.79\00:13:15.54 And you are going to have big problems so chew your food well, 00:13:15.57\00:13:19.61 eat smaller meals, and there are some other nice things 00:13:19.64\00:13:21.97 that you can take. 00:13:22.00\00:13:22.97 I have already mentioned, don't take vinegar, don't take spices, 00:13:22.98\00:13:26.26 they are extremely bad for that mucous lining. 00:13:26.29\00:13:28.49 You can also help the mucous lining with a few nice things, 00:13:28.52\00:13:32.00 you can take slippery elm, find it in the powder form 00:13:32.01\00:13:35.93 in a herb store, mix it with a little bit of warm water, 00:13:35.96\00:13:39.11 and you are going to find if let it sit long enough 00:13:39.14\00:13:40.91 it becomes very gelatinous like mucous. 00:13:40.94\00:13:45.91 Drink that down it will coat the lining, extremely good 00:13:45.94\00:13:48.91 for the stomach. 00:13:48.92\00:13:50.04 Garlic is extremely good for that, so is charcoal. 00:13:50.07\00:13:54.51 Charcoal is probably one of the best things that I would 00:13:54.54\00:13:56.64 recommend if you have a peptic ulcer. 00:13:56.67\00:13:58.36 You mix about two or three spoonfuls of charcoal with 00:13:58.39\00:14:03.14 some water and drink that a few times a day, 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.57 very soothing for the stomach and will help you 00:14:05.58\00:14:08.48 along these lines. 00:14:08.51\00:14:09.48 Don't chew gum! 00:14:09.49\00:14:12.63 Chewing gum is bad for the peptic ulcer because you are 00:14:12.66\00:14:16.44 constantly working your salivary glands, you are constantly 00:14:16.47\00:14:19.93 swallowing down, your digestive amylase gets down in stomach, 00:14:19.96\00:14:23.37 and you've got some more problems being 00:14:23.40\00:14:25.19 formed down there. 00:14:25.22\00:14:26.31 So peptic ulcer in not the end of the road, 00:14:26.34\00:14:28.71 but if you start finding that you have coffee ground stools, 00:14:28.74\00:14:32.31 basically it looks like coffee grounds, which is 00:14:32.34\00:14:34.66 basically well digested blood because it has gone 00:14:34.69\00:14:37.45 all the way through your system, 00:14:37.48\00:14:38.48 you've got a serious problem, see your doctor. 00:14:38.51\00:14:41.00 If you start vomiting blood, very serious problem, 00:14:41.03\00:14:44.52 see your doctor and take care of it but I would start working 00:14:44.55\00:14:48.35 on that peptic ulcer right now, and if you don't have one 00:14:48.38\00:14:50.94 you start working on the prevention for peptic ulcers. 00:14:50.97\00:14:54.27 Prevention is always Dr. Thrash the very best way, 00:14:54.30\00:14:57.51 rather than the cure. 00:14:57.54\00:14:58.51 Yes, it's far better especially in gastrointestinal problems 00:14:58.52\00:15:02.32 to prevent the problem if it is at all possible. 00:15:02.35\00:15:05.33 There is one that we have not yet understood how to prevent, 00:15:05.36\00:15:10.15 that's Chron's Disease. 00:15:10.16\00:15:11.56 Chron's Disease probably has a preventable cause, 00:15:11.59\00:15:15.63 but we don't know what it is yet. 00:15:15.66\00:15:17.08 Causes may be an autoimmune disorder in which case we 00:15:17.11\00:15:21.73 wouldn't have a lot that we can do at this time 00:15:21.76\00:15:24.40 to prevent it but it may be an infectious agent 00:15:24.43\00:15:27.99 and if it is then there is much that we can do. 00:15:28.02\00:15:30.61 There are many ways to treat naturally the infectious agents 00:15:30.64\00:15:36.43 that can involve the gastro- intestinal tract. 00:15:36.46\00:15:39.09 One that I like a lot for a peptic ulcer which is involved 00:15:39.12\00:15:43.46 with the H-Pylori germ is Myrrh, Goldenseal, Echinacea, 00:15:43.50\00:15:50.38 Myrrh, Garlic, all of theses that Dr. Miller mentioned 00:15:50.41\00:15:55.02 and also some grapefruit seed extract, and maybe some 00:15:55.05\00:16:00.81 Elderberry extract. 00:16:00.84\00:16:03.07 All of these can be helpful, these so called anti-microbial 00:16:03.10\00:16:07.08 herbs, they are very helpful for any kind of infectious agent 00:16:07.12\00:16:11.07 in the gastrointestinal tract. 00:16:11.16\00:16:13.08 If Chron's Disease is related to an infectious agent 00:16:13.09\00:16:17.21 then all of these may be helpful in these individuals, 00:16:17.24\00:16:21.07 as well as some hydrotherapy. 00:16:21.10\00:16:22.65 Hot packs over the abdomen, maybe hot baths to bring the 00:16:22.68\00:16:27.01 mouth temperature up a good bit, all of this may be helpful 00:16:27.04\00:16:31.42 in infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. 00:16:31.45\00:16:36.18 But another thing that we have found may be a factor, 00:16:36.19\00:16:41.11 it may not be the total cause but it may be the factor 00:16:41.14\00:16:43.70 in Chron's disease is an allergy. 00:16:43.71\00:16:46.35 Allergies for the gastrointestinal tract 00:16:46.38\00:16:49.73 can be very simple, can be nothing more serious than milk 00:16:49.76\00:16:55.98 or a lactose sensitivity, or a casein sensitivity, 00:16:56.01\00:17:01.75 in those cases and the elimination of milk and 00:17:01.78\00:17:04.96 all dairy products can be very helpful, very curative in fact. 00:17:04.99\00:17:09.36 But often there are some other things that are involved in a 00:17:09.39\00:17:13.12 sensitivity in Chron's disease, one of those is citrus fruits 00:17:13.15\00:17:18.32 and juices, and of course any kind of irritating substance 00:17:18.35\00:17:21.52 like coffee, tea, colas, chocolate, those can also be 00:17:21.55\00:17:26.74 irritating to the person with Chron's disease even if they 00:17:26.77\00:17:31.80 are not a part of that that one is allergic to. 00:17:31.83\00:17:33.91 Interestingly enough the person with Chron's disease can develop 00:17:33.94\00:17:38.32 a lot of allergies that they haven't always had. 00:17:38.35\00:17:41.01 Chron's disease came on, then the allergies developed 00:17:41.04\00:17:44.58 because the intestinal tract not as strong to resist 00:17:44.61\00:17:50.12 an allergy as it would have been if it had not gotten sick. 00:17:50.15\00:17:54.21 Where does Chron's hit the person? 00:17:54.24\00:17:58.13 Well it's usually... We can always say that 00:17:58.16\00:18:00.49 Chron's will almost always affect the terminal portion 00:18:00.52\00:18:04.33 of the ileum. 00:18:04.36\00:18:05.33 That's the small bowel, the terminal portion of the 00:18:05.34\00:18:09.45 small bowel, and the end of that is almost always 00:18:09.46\00:18:13.67 involved in Chron's disease. 00:18:13.70\00:18:15.27 The first part of the colon may also be involved, 00:18:15.30\00:18:18.31 and in individuals who have a very severe case of 00:18:18.34\00:18:23.73 Chron's disease, practically the entire gastrointestinal tract 00:18:23.76\00:18:27.64 from the esophagus to the anus may be involved. 00:18:27.67\00:18:31.43 These are very severe cases and fortunately they are not 00:18:31.46\00:18:35.76 really common. 00:18:35.79\00:18:37.32 Now there are some treatments that can be used besides the 00:18:37.33\00:18:43.84 anti-microbials, we can use certain vitamins and minerals 00:18:43.85\00:18:49.08 that these individuals tend to be low in already, 00:18:49.09\00:18:53.67 so we can use those: Magnesium, and perhaps Zinc. 00:18:53.71\00:18:56.70 Sometimes there is an iron deficiency anemia, 00:18:56.71\00:18:59.66 in which case we need to supplement with iron, 00:18:59.67\00:19:03.17 and then the use of Pectin and other fibers. 00:19:03.18\00:19:07.51 Pectin in particular is very good and any kind of rough 00:19:07.52\00:19:11.98 or fibrous foods such as the vegetables, grains, fruits, 00:19:11.99\00:19:18.59 nuts, and seeds. 00:19:18.60\00:19:21.24 Those can all be very helpful for the person who has 00:19:21.25\00:19:24.42 Chron's disease, making certain of course that the person with 00:19:24.43\00:19:28.87 Chron's disease is not sensitive to these foods. 00:19:28.88\00:19:32.67 The onset of Chron's disease is usually around the age of 20, 00:19:32.68\00:19:39.72 that's the peak incidence, and by 40 almost all cases of 00:19:39.76\00:19:44.07 Chron's disease have already had their beginning. 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.82 So we can be thankful that the symptoms of Chron's disease 00:19:46.83\00:19:53.24 don't usually occur in later life, or don't usually have 00:19:53.25\00:19:57.11 their onset. 00:19:57.12\00:19:58.09 Now at this time Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you 00:19:58.10\00:20:02.52 about Ulcerative Colitis, a very distressing disorder, 00:20:02.53\00:20:06.20 Dr. Miller! 00:20:06.21\00:20:07.39 Ok, you can pretty much tell where that is at, 00:20:07.40\00:20:11.58 Ulcerative means you have some ulcers, colitis is in the 00:20:11.59\00:20:15.57 colon, a major problem, and it's manifest by bloody 00:20:15.58\00:20:21.73 diarrhea, mucous in the blood, or bloody mucous in the 00:20:21.74\00:20:26.14 stools, bloating, sometimes people loose weight, 00:20:26.15\00:20:30.40 a lot of pain and discomfort in the abdomen area. 00:20:30.41\00:20:33.86 Basically the number 1 cause would be constipation. 00:20:33.87\00:20:38.57 It's not just the fact that the person is constipated 00:20:38.58\00:20:41.59 it's what is causing the constipation. 00:20:41.60\00:20:44.00 It's causing an irritation... people who have a lot of spices 00:20:44.01\00:20:49.28 in their food, a lot of meat in their food, 00:20:49.29\00:20:51.26 a lot of milk in their food, are opening the door for 00:20:51.27\00:20:54.15 Ulcerative Colitis. 00:20:54.16\00:20:55.44 Again this is one of those things that you do not see 00:20:55.45\00:20:58.00 in the developing countries. 00:20:58.01\00:20:59.65 It's just one of those things that is feedingly rare. 00:20:59.66\00:21:01.95 There was a doctor years ago working in Africa for years 00:21:01.96\00:21:06.46 named Dr. Dennis Burkett, he became known as 00:21:06.47\00:21:09.33 "the fiber doctor. " 00:21:09.34\00:21:10.32 He noticed that the people that he dealt with, 00:21:10.33\00:21:12.00 none of them ever got colon cancer and finally he determined 00:21:12.01\00:21:16.30 that the reason why is these people have a high amount of 00:21:16.31\00:21:19.53 fiber in their diet. 00:21:19.54\00:21:20.87 So colon cancer is one step beyond Ulcerative Colitis, 00:21:20.88\00:21:27.07 people who have this constant irritation because of the 00:21:27.08\00:21:30.17 impaction of the fecal material in the colon are going to tend 00:21:30.18\00:21:34.40 to have more of those problems. 00:21:34.41\00:21:36.12 So what do you do about it? 1. Almost the same as we talked 00:21:36.13\00:21:40.34 a little bit ago about Peptic Ulcer is you eat 00:21:40.35\00:21:43.91 smaller meals and you chew your food well. 00:21:43.92\00:21:46.20 You eat a high fiber diet, it is extremely important. 00:21:46.21\00:21:49.46 But going again to this cabbage juice thing is extremely 00:21:49.47\00:21:52.70 important, but at the same time at the onset of the 00:21:52.71\00:21:55.91 treatment you will probably not want to eat to many raw 00:21:55.92\00:21:58.86 grains, and you do not eat raw fruits on an empty stomach. 00:21:58.87\00:22:04.53 You need to eat some cooked foods first, 00:22:04.54\00:22:06.73 but again with the cooked foods, and this is something 00:22:06.74\00:22:09.54 that we don't get in our society, our grains should be 00:22:09.55\00:22:13.76 well cooked. 00:22:13.77\00:22:15.18 The inspired book that I once read said that grains usual 00:22:15.19\00:22:19.09 porridge or mush should have several hours cooking, 00:22:19.10\00:22:21.77 and we believe that the long starch chains that are put into 00:22:21.78\00:22:26.07 the blood stream are very damaging to the body. 00:22:26.08\00:22:28.96 every single part of the body so we want to have 00:22:28.97\00:22:31.01 well cooked grains in the body and it will help move this 00:22:31.02\00:22:35.13 problem along. 00:22:35.14\00:22:36.81 There are other things that you can do, 00:22:36.82\00:22:38.13 hot fomentations over the abdomen area is extremely good. 00:22:38.14\00:22:42.47 Doing a massage over the colon area, 00:22:42.51\00:22:46.71 basically down around where your appendix is... 00:22:46.72\00:22:49.10 people always know where there appendix is. 00:22:49.11\00:22:50.89 You put your fingers and just do a circular massage up the 00:22:50.90\00:22:55.56 Ascending colon, get just below the rib cage, 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.41 go across the Transverse colon, and then get the other side 00:22:58.42\00:23:03.60 of the rib cage and you go down the Descending colon 00:23:03.61\00:23:06.74 and you do that a number of times. 00:23:06.75\00:23:08.65 A few years ago we had a patient at Uchee Pines 00:23:08.66\00:23:10.94 who had some type of a severe gastrointestinal problem 00:23:10.95\00:23:17.17 and really it had not been diagnosed what his problem was, 00:23:17.18\00:23:20.46 he had been to 23 different doctors, 00:23:20.47\00:23:22.07 spent a quarter of a million dollars and he spent 21/2 years 00:23:22.08\00:23:25.56 trying to find the solution to his problem. 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.36 Came to Uchee Pines and by God's grace he, for me anyway, 00:23:27.37\00:23:33.47 he got to be my patient, I enjoy working with these 00:23:33.48\00:23:35.87 challenging people. 00:23:35.88\00:23:36.85 One of the treatments that I decided to do... 00:23:36.86\00:23:39.79 When I was ready through John Harvey Kellogg's 00:23:39.80\00:23:41.75 hydrotherapy manual trying to find out what did he do 00:23:41.76\00:23:45.19 with strange problems in the colon area and basically 00:23:45.20\00:23:48.87 what I did was after I gave him a Russia Steam Bath 00:23:48.88\00:23:52.67 which would give him a lot of relaxation, 00:23:52.68\00:23:55.19 I take a hose with cold water and I would spray it right there 00:23:55.20\00:23:59.30 in the appendix area and then sort of just play it up the 00:23:59.31\00:24:03.02 Ascending, across the Transverse and down the Descending colon 00:24:03.03\00:24:06.21 and I would do this over and over again. 00:24:06.22\00:24:08.41 Now whether that helped or the Russian Steam Bath helped 00:24:08.42\00:24:12.93 or the two other treatments that I was giving him helped, 00:24:12.94\00:24:15.17 whatever it was, he was told one night... 00:24:15.18\00:24:18.45 He was woken in the middle of the night... 00:24:18.46\00:24:19.88 He heard his name and he woke up and he looked over to see 00:24:19.89\00:24:22.52 what his wife wanted... she was sound asleep over there, 00:24:22.53\00:24:24.58 he turned back over and he heard his name again and he realized 00:24:24.59\00:24:28.14 it wasn't a human speaking to him, 00:24:28.15\00:24:30.13 and the voice in his room said "YOU ARE HEALED" 00:24:30.14\00:24:33.47 and he was completely healed of this particular problem. 00:24:33.48\00:24:37.39 So the simple things that we can do, again I would recommend 00:24:37.40\00:24:40.63 the slippery elm, I would recommend the garlic, 00:24:40.64\00:24:43.27 I would recommend staying away from the irritating 00:24:43.28\00:24:45.95 substances, the coffee, colas, chocolates, and the alcohol, 00:24:45.98\00:24:50.35 and of course the meat and the milk, and eating a 00:24:50.38\00:24:52.93 bland diet to help this problem cure itself. 00:24:52.94\00:24:56.46 If you do this it is a whole lot better than the other options. 00:24:56.49\00:25:00.92 Yes, and often these very simple things can be helpful 00:25:00.93\00:25:05.41 Ulcerative Colitis which is a perplexing and 00:25:05.45\00:25:09.64 distressing disorder. 00:25:09.67\00:25:11.43 Another disorder of the colon is that of polyps. 00:25:11.46\00:25:14.84 Polyps are small finger like projections, or they begin small 00:25:14.87\00:25:18.88 and they grow and they can get to be quite huge, 00:25:18.91\00:25:23.28 almost golf ball or the size or a peach and these 00:25:23.31\00:25:29.26 individuals can have major symptoms from polyps. 00:25:29.29\00:25:33.30 There is another kind of polypoid disease called 00:25:33.31\00:25:37.17 Adenomatous Polyposis of the colon. 00:25:37.20\00:25:40.45 This has some hereditary components of it and sometimes 00:25:40.48\00:25:47.04 these individuals require even a Cholectomy. 00:25:47.05\00:25:50.37 The entire colon being bleeding and raw but fortunately 00:25:50.40\00:25:55.89 that is not a common disease, but individuals who have it 00:25:55.90\00:25:59.28 can be helped by following a very careful lifestyle. 00:25:59.31\00:26:04.72 Now with polyps, they are often due to lifestyle transgressions 00:26:04.73\00:26:10.82 and you know the eight natural laws of health expanded to 00:26:10.85\00:26:16.62 all of those that we generally talk about up to 14 or more 00:26:16.65\00:26:21.34 laws of health and apply all of these in your life as you can. 00:26:21.37\00:26:26.19 Polyps of the colon can progress to cancer of the colon, 00:26:26.22\00:26:32.22 polyps are considered to be pre-cancerous and with 00:26:32.23\00:26:36.03 cancer of the colon there is really a serious problem. 00:26:36.06\00:26:39.41 But even with cancer of the colon there are things that 00:26:39.44\00:26:43.10 can be done that can slow down the growth of the cancer and 00:26:43.13\00:26:46.75 make it so that the individual with colon cancer can have a 00:26:46.78\00:26:51.62 partial remission or sometimes a complete remission. 00:26:51.65\00:26:55.55 We had a woman at Uchee Pines one time who went 18 years 00:26:55.58\00:27:00.01 from the diagnosis of an annular cancer, 00:27:00.04\00:27:03.48 which grows in a circular fashion around the colon 00:27:03.51\00:27:08.27 until the time that she got widespread metatheses and died, 00:27:08.28\00:27:12.06 but we felt that her remission was a great tribute to 00:27:12.07\00:27:16.08 changing her lifestyle, becoming a total vegetarian 00:27:16.11\00:27:20.17 eating just high fiber plant based diet and trusting in 00:27:20.20\00:27:27.33 divine power. 00:27:27.36\00:27:28.41 There are symptoms that one has throughout one's life 00:27:28.44\00:27:34.19 that can indicate the probability or an increased 00:27:34.22\00:27:38.06 risk of getting a cancer of the colon and these are 00:27:38.09\00:27:40.83 such things intestinal bleeding, and hemorrhoids, 00:27:40.86\00:27:44.53 and a variety of symptoms such as that. 00:27:44.54\00:27:48.68 Now we hope that our discussion of these problems with the 00:27:48.71\00:27:53.06 gastrointestinal tract will give you a more peaceful 00:27:53.09\00:27:55.98 colon and gastrointestinal tract. 00:27:56.01\00:27:58.37
