Disease is a word that actually defines itself. 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.35 "Dis and ease".. you put those 2 phrases together and you have 00:00:05.38\00:00:10.87 "disease" or the lack of ease. 00:00:10.90\00:00:14.76 Another way to define disease is an effort of nature 00:00:14.79\00:00:19.43 to rid herself of the conditions that have resulted 00:00:19.46\00:00:22.70 from broken health law. 00:00:22.73\00:00:24.65 We'll be talking about some of these laws... 00:00:24.68\00:00:26.76 and what you can do to help your body to rid itself of these 00:00:26.79\00:00:31.12 conditions during this program. 00:00:31.13\00:00:33.01 We hope you will join us for it. 00:00:33.04\00:00:34.01 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:54.22\00:00:56.25 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:56.28\00:01:00.08 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:01:00.11\00:01:04.35 We don't always know what laws we have broken when we 00:01:04.38\00:01:08.58 have a disease. 00:01:08.59\00:01:09.81 Sometimes, we do but much of the time, 00:01:09.82\00:01:12.53 we just don't know. 00:01:12.56\00:01:14.20 We think we may have broken some law, and as we 00:01:14.23\00:01:19.57 think about our program, we can sometimes pinpoint 00:01:19.60\00:01:23.14 ..."Yes, here is where I've made a mistake" 00:01:23.17\00:01:26.24 and that led to a disease. " 00:01:26.25\00:01:29.15 I know a woman who had a little girl who was probably about 00:01:29.18\00:01:34.09 2 or 2-1/2, and when she was just 00:01:34.12\00:01:39.35 going into the hospital for the birth of her second child, 00:01:39.39\00:01:42.36 the little girl had some swollen gums and they looked 00:01:42.39\00:01:46.50 a little spongy and uncomfortable, 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.82 but she still had a good appetite 00:01:49.85\00:01:51.61 and everything seemed to be all right. 00:01:51.64\00:01:53.19 So, the new baby was born and the mother brought 00:01:53.22\00:01:56.31 the baby home, and looked at her little daughter 00:01:56.34\00:01:59.78 and her gums were now bleeding. 00:01:59.81\00:02:03.02 Not only that, she had some swollen lymph nodes. 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.08 Well, she had heard somewhere back in her ancient past 00:02:06.11\00:02:10.13 that bleeding gums and swollen lymph nodes 00:02:10.16\00:02:14.41 meant leukemia. 00:02:14.44\00:02:15.98 So immediately she thought, "My child has leukemia. " 00:02:16.01\00:02:19.85 So she could hardly get in the house. 00:02:19.88\00:02:22.26 She sent her husband with the little girl 00:02:22.29\00:02:25.51 to the pediatrician's office and the diagnosis was 00:02:25.54\00:02:29.40 brought back... "infectious lymphadenitis" 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.11 Ahh... we can draw a deep breath on that one! 00:02:32.14\00:02:35.33 We didn't have a real serious problem. 00:02:35.36\00:02:38.23 What a joy! What a privilege! 00:02:38.26\00:02:40.66 What a relief that is! 00:02:40.69\00:02:42.82 So in this instance, they checked back to see if 00:02:42.85\00:02:47.81 they could determine what it might be that had caused 00:02:47.82\00:02:50.84 the little girl to have a weakening of her immune system 00:02:50.87\00:02:53.99 that caused the infectious lymphadenitis. 00:02:54.02\00:02:56.38 A few hot baths and some hot packs to her throat 00:02:56.41\00:03:00.42 and the entire neck abolished the infectious lymphadenitis 00:03:00.45\00:03:05.70 and she was perfectly fine. 00:03:05.73\00:03:07.12 But when they checked back in her recent history, 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.30 they remembered that about 3 or 4 days before 00:03:10.33\00:03:14.36 the new baby was born, this older child had gone 00:03:14.39\00:03:20.76 to a little birthday party for another child, 00:03:20.79\00:03:23.97 and she had eaten some things 00:03:24.00\00:03:25.77 that ordinarily, she didn't eat at home... 00:03:25.81\00:03:27.86 And apparently that weakened the immune system 00:03:27.89\00:03:29.91 enough so that she was not able to hold the fences high 00:03:29.92\00:03:36.78 on the problem with infectious lymphadenitis. 00:03:36.81\00:03:40.52 Now sometimes our problems are very small like that, 00:03:40.55\00:03:45.69 but one of the big problems, that for couples 00:03:45.70\00:03:48.22 can be such a serious problem, that both the wife and the 00:03:48.25\00:03:53.84 husband are quite sick at heart about it, 00:03:53.85\00:03:57.37 and that is infertility. 00:03:57.40\00:03:59.60 Infertility can be a problem that both men and women have, 00:03:59.63\00:04:05.58 and with women, the problem is much more difficult to find 00:04:05.61\00:04:09.51 than in men. 00:04:09.54\00:04:11.04 In women, they may have blocked tubes. 00:04:11.07\00:04:15.03 They may have a problem with the cervix. 00:04:15.06\00:04:17.22 It may be a problem with the vagina. 00:04:17.25\00:04:19.43 There may be an inadequate cushion for the implantation of 00:04:19.46\00:04:24.17 the little ovum, or the ovum itself may not be 00:04:24.20\00:04:27.80 of good quality. 00:04:27.83\00:04:29.28 There are many, many reasons why a woman can be infertile. 00:04:29.31\00:04:33.92 And sometimes the treatment for her may not be as easy as 00:04:33.95\00:04:38.62 it is for a man. 00:04:38.63\00:04:40.12 There are certain hormonal problems that a woman can have. 00:04:40.15\00:04:43.91 She can have a thyroid problem, 00:04:43.94\00:04:45.49 and that can cause her to have a serious difficulty 00:04:45.53\00:04:50.76 with conceiving. 00:04:50.79\00:04:53.41 It may be so severe that each month, 00:04:53.44\00:04:56.24 she goes into a depression. 00:04:56.25\00:04:57.80 Just sick at heart because no pregnancy had resulted. 00:04:57.83\00:05:02.32 And the thyroid problem is corrected, and sometimes 00:05:02.35\00:05:05.52 if that were the principal cause of her infertility, 00:05:05.55\00:05:10.45 then she conceives. 00:05:10.46\00:05:12.60 Sometimes, it's an ovarian problem. 00:05:12.63\00:05:15.16 Something wrong with the ovary, 00:05:15.19\00:05:16.91 or something wrong with her cycles. 00:05:16.94\00:05:18.89 There are several ways that the hormones can 00:05:18.90\00:05:22.07 go out of kilter, and can make it so that she cannot conceive. 00:05:22.10\00:05:28.13 Now sometimes, it is not the woman who is the 00:05:28.16\00:05:33.22 problem... it is the man... 00:05:33.25\00:05:35.24 And Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you some about 00:05:35.27\00:05:39.65 male infertility. 00:05:39.66\00:05:41.42 What can you tell us that will shed some light on this topic. 00:05:41.45\00:05:45.52 Well, whenever I deal with people, and this often happens 00:05:45.53\00:05:49.06 when I'm in places like India, where there is a fertility 00:05:49.09\00:05:52.48 problem... of course it's always the women coming to me 00:05:52.51\00:05:54.91 The men will NEVER come... 00:05:54.94\00:05:56.40 And, of course, the first problem I see in places like 00:05:56.43\00:05:59.90 this is... Here's this woman who I would 00:05:59.93\00:06:02.70 take to be in her late teens, and she is, 00:06:02.73\00:06:04.63 and she's been married for 8-9 years, and she's been unable 00:06:04.66\00:06:08.85 to conceive... I'm just thinking the trauma 00:06:08.89\00:06:10.54 that this poor child has gone 00:06:10.83\00:06:12.09 through has probably had a lot to do with it. 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.54 But I would always tell her AND her spouse... 00:06:14.57\00:06:16.95 This is what I tell them when I go there... 00:06:16.98\00:06:19.94 I say, "Look, what I want you to do, is I want you to go home 00:06:19.97\00:06:23.49 and eat the BEST foods you can find. 00:06:23.52\00:06:26.35 Natural foods... I want you to eat a lot of 00:06:26.38\00:06:28.58 B vitamin-type foods. 00:06:28.61\00:06:30.51 As a matter of fact, I will buy the B vitamins, 00:06:30.52\00:06:32.58 give them multiple vitamins, some complex B vitamins 00:06:32.61\00:06:37.71 Have them eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, 00:06:37.74\00:06:40.49 and have no relations for at least one month... 00:06:40.52\00:06:42.98 And then according to their cycle, when they're at the peak 00:06:43.01\00:06:47.35 of their fertility, I say... then is when you try 00:06:47.38\00:06:50.74 it again, and see what happens. 00:06:50.77\00:06:52.69 But men often get into problems, you're seeing this more and more 00:06:52.72\00:06:55.96 More and more men today are infertile for a couple of 00:06:55.99\00:06:58.89 very common reasons. 00:06:58.92\00:07:00.05 #1. They're taking steroids, trying to build up their bodies 00:07:00.09\00:07:05.10 which is going to lessen their production of sperm 00:07:05.13\00:07:07.66 and, therefore, they're not going to be able to 00:07:07.69\00:07:09.51 enable their wives to conceive. 00:07:09.54\00:07:11.77 And so, if men want to have children, or have their wives 00:07:11.80\00:07:15.44 have children, they need to stay away from the steroids, 00:07:15.47\00:07:17.88 and let the muscles develop naturally. 00:07:17.89\00:07:20.44 But there's another new one... it's not so new, 00:07:20.47\00:07:23.53 but it's been recently discovered... 00:07:23.56\00:07:25.15 Not long ago, I bought a bicycle, 00:07:25.18\00:07:27.98 and I rode that thing, and I was in a lot of pain 00:07:28.01\00:07:31.70 because they have this little thing about the size of a banana 00:07:31.73\00:07:34.42 ...and I don't like sitting on bananas for long periods of time 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.26 especially these hard bananas. 00:07:37.29\00:07:38.49 They find that people who ride bicycles with this 00:07:38.52\00:07:41.95 narrow seat, because of the lack of circulation, 00:07:41.98\00:07:46.61 that this will cause, because this is pushing up into that 00:07:46.64\00:07:49.63 area, will decrease the amount of spermatozoa the body will 00:07:49.66\00:07:53.67 produce and, therefore, reduce a man's fertility himself. 00:07:53.68\00:07:56.81 And so, we need to get those nice big tractor seats 00:07:56.84\00:07:59.66 It may not look very macho. 00:07:59.69\00:08:01.33 It may not make you very aerodynamic... 00:08:01.36\00:08:03.53 but I would recommend you get a smaller seat. 00:08:03.56\00:08:05.75 Also, the overheating of the male organs is not very good. 00:08:05.78\00:08:11.84 So basically, the jockey-type underwear... 00:08:11.87\00:08:16.94 these really tight little bikini-type... 00:08:16.97\00:08:19.10 I see some men... in the stores you see the 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.38 advertisements for bikini-type underwear for men 00:08:21.41\00:08:24.32 Not healthy for the male anatomy. 00:08:24.35\00:08:26.85 And so the best thing for him to do is get the boxer-type 00:08:26.88\00:08:30.15 shorts, and that might help him a lot in staying away 00:08:30.18\00:08:33.21 from the infertility problem with his wife. 00:08:33.24\00:08:35.80 There are other psychological things also in this thing. 00:08:35.83\00:08:39.70 You know, both the husband and the wife have to be at one 00:08:39.73\00:08:42.32 I think sometimes the body says... 00:08:42.35\00:08:44.65 "No, we're not going to let this happen because 00:08:44.68\00:08:46.47 things just aren't right. " 00:08:46.50\00:08:47.82 But then there's another thing we've got to consider... 00:08:47.85\00:08:49.88 Maybe God is saying, "For some, yes, but for you, no" 00:08:49.91\00:08:53.38 But there's another factor in there too... 00:08:53.41\00:08:55.63 that I failed to mention, and we need to mention because 00:08:55.66\00:08:57.96 we're living in a strange time in this earth's history 00:08:57.99\00:09:00.08 We're living in a time just like the time of Sodom and Gomorrah 00:09:00.11\00:09:03.13 And much, much infertility is being caused by 00:09:03.16\00:09:07.43 sexually transmitted diseases that may have transpired 00:09:07.46\00:09:10.55 15, 20, 30 years ago! 00:09:10.58\00:09:12.43 Maybe not 30 years ago, but a long time ago 00:09:12.46\00:09:15.02 which has so damaged the apparatus, 00:09:15.05\00:09:17.48 that conception is impossible. 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.91 And so, it's extremely important to live pure in these days... 00:09:19.95\00:09:24.04 if you want to have a normal and productive life. 00:09:24.07\00:09:27.56 Does that sound like good advice, Dr. Thrash? 00:09:27.59\00:09:29.43 Yes, that's very good advice, and I, of course, 00:09:29.46\00:09:32.11 agree with that fully! 00:09:32.12\00:09:33.74 I got from the internet, on male infertility, 00:09:33.75\00:09:37.59 some things that I thought were worthy of taking note of. 00:09:37.62\00:09:42.60 One is that in 30% of infertile couples, 00:09:42.63\00:09:45.98 the husband, alone, is involved, 00:09:46.01\00:09:51.62 and in another 20%, the husband is partly to blame 00:09:51.65\00:09:55.69 and the wife is partly at fault with that... 00:09:55.72\00:09:58.53 But it's in those cases that a man can be greatly helped. 00:09:58.54\00:10:03.81 And, of course, to make a test for a man to test his 00:10:03.84\00:10:10.13 fertility... very simple, just a laboratory test 00:10:10.16\00:10:13.54 and a count of spermatozoa, and an understanding of 00:10:13.57\00:10:19.96 what percentage of those spermatozoa are in good health 00:10:19.99\00:10:23.72 and are nicely motile... 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.35 that can be very helpful to one to know. 00:10:25.38\00:10:28.40 And then about 20 to 250 million spermatozoa per cc 00:10:28.43\00:10:34.87 that's the expected count 00:10:34.90\00:10:36.85 And if it falls below that, then of course, 00:10:36.88\00:10:40.61 the man may have a serious problem that 00:10:40.64\00:10:43.65 can be dealt with... There may be something 00:10:43.68\00:10:47.69 that's unique to him, that with a very small 00:10:47.72\00:10:51.70 amount of treatment, he can come out of 00:10:51.73\00:10:54.34 that with no problem. 00:10:54.37\00:10:55.46 No more than 60% of the spermatozoa may be active 00:10:55.49\00:11:01.95 and still the man can be fertile. 00:11:01.98\00:11:04.24 But if more than 40% of the spermatozoa are inactive, 00:11:04.27\00:11:10.36 then he may not be fertile. 00:11:10.39\00:11:12.38 In addition to the excessive heat of clothing, 00:11:12.39\00:11:16.53 excessive heat of very hot baths taken daily 00:11:16.56\00:11:20.63 over a prolonged period of time... 00:11:20.66\00:11:22.75 that can also be a cause of infertility. 00:11:22.78\00:11:26.18 With the testes not descended fully into the scrotum 00:11:26.21\00:11:31.16 that can also be another cause of male infertility. 00:11:31.19\00:11:35.30 Or, varicoceles... that's a condition that can be 00:11:35.33\00:11:40.32 readily corrected by a urologist. 00:11:40.35\00:11:43.51 And then, poor nutrition, other disease like diabetes, 00:11:43.52\00:11:48.95 hardening of the arteries, illnesses of those kinds can 00:11:48.98\00:11:53.06 certainly be a problem with causing infertility. 00:11:53.09\00:11:57.65 About 50% of the causes of infertility in men can be 00:11:57.68\00:12:02.67 successfully treated. 00:12:02.70\00:12:04.17 It may be that high in women, but it's more difficult 00:12:04.18\00:12:07.42 to make a full assessment in women, than it is in men. 00:12:07.45\00:12:12.30 Now, I would like for Dr. Miller to talk with you 00:12:12.33\00:12:15.96 some about infantile colic. 00:12:15.99\00:12:19.07 This is a disorder in children, in babies 00:12:19.10\00:12:23.70 that usually is self-limited... that is before the age of 1 year 00:12:23.73\00:12:28.57 usually it's going to go away, but what can you tell us about 00:12:28.60\00:12:32.29 infantile colic... a very distressing problem. 00:12:32.32\00:12:36.30 It is very distressing probably to the point where some 00:12:36.33\00:12:38.31 parents wish they'd been infertile because it can REALLY 00:12:38.34\00:12:40.82 drive you to distraction to have a child with that. 00:12:40.85\00:12:43.03 Basically, this is a very serious problem for a child. 00:12:43.06\00:12:46.60 Excess gas passing up and down through the tract; 00:12:46.61\00:12:50.15 the child will sit there and have bloating... 00:12:50.18\00:12:52.18 They'll sometimes arch their backs, 00:12:52.21\00:12:54.90 or they'll sit there and draw their legs up. 00:12:54.93\00:12:56.65 They'll just cry incessantly and it can be very 00:12:56.68\00:12:59.61 disturbing for the whole family. 00:12:59.64\00:13:01.67 And, I suspect some of you have spent your long nights 00:13:01.70\00:13:05.12 walking the floor, patting the baby and bouncing 00:13:05.15\00:13:08.05 up and down... and so strange that the bouncing 00:13:08.08\00:13:09.89 them up and down seems to do some good, 00:13:09.90\00:13:12.09 and we'll talk about a good way to do that naturally 00:13:12.12\00:13:14.52 that Dr. Thrash told me about some years ago... 00:13:14.53\00:13:16.43 But what causes it in the first place? 00:13:16.46\00:13:19.16 They find that children who are born in countries 00:13:19.19\00:13:23.55 where there are not so many drugs used, 00:13:23.58\00:13:25.64 especially drugs that are used in labor and in delivery 00:13:25.67\00:13:29.07 they have less infantile colic. 00:13:29.10\00:13:32.41 There's something about the medication, 00:13:32.44\00:13:34.27 because if you're doing it during labor and delivery, 00:13:34.30\00:13:38.12 that is going to pass through to the child 00:13:38.15\00:13:40.43 and something is in that child that 00:13:40.44\00:13:42.24 that child's body is going to have to deal with, 00:13:42.28\00:13:44.39 and often, it deals with it in 00:13:44.42\00:13:46.27 a manifestation of a thing like colic. 00:13:46.31\00:13:48.49 It could also be the child's diet. 00:13:48.52\00:13:50.66 Now, we would recommend to everyone, 00:13:50.69\00:13:54.28 as far as humanly possible, that that child be breastfed. 00:13:54.31\00:13:58.51 Breastfeeding the child is the best way to avoid 00:13:58.54\00:14:01.69 many, many of the problems... It strengthens the 00:14:01.72\00:14:03.65 child's immune system for the rest of their life. 00:14:03.68\00:14:06.18 They have shown studies that they have higher IQs 00:14:06.21\00:14:08.88 But just for the fact that they're getting good milk 00:14:08.91\00:14:11.54 but only if the mother's diet is a diet that's going to 00:14:11.57\00:14:16.10 promote her producing good milk. 00:14:16.13\00:14:18.84 The mother cannot be eating things that going to 00:14:18.87\00:14:21.37 pass through her body, into the milk, and into the baby 00:14:21.40\00:14:24.66 that's going to cause a problem. 00:14:24.67\00:14:25.96 And so, let's say the mother is breastfeeding, 00:14:25.99\00:14:28.31 and still the child has lots of colic... Look at the diet! 00:14:28.34\00:14:32.59 Onions in the diet, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbages... 00:14:32.62\00:14:37.21 all of these things produce lots of gas when it's passed through 00:14:37.24\00:14:41.16 the milk into the baby, and these things could be 00:14:41.19\00:14:43.88 causing the colic in the child. 00:14:43.91\00:14:46.65 And so, mother, watch the diet. 00:14:46.68\00:14:49.46 Get a very low gas-forming diet, 00:14:49.49\00:14:51.68 and that's the best diet for your child. 00:14:51.72\00:14:53.71 If you have not breastfed, or are not breastfeeding, 00:14:53.74\00:14:57.17 and you're on some type of formula... 00:14:57.20\00:14:58.92 Almost all infant formulas have some type of 00:14:58.95\00:15:01.51 dairy products, and dairy products being 00:15:01.52\00:15:03.22 the #1 food allergen... that could be your problem. 00:15:03.23\00:15:05.93 Trouble is... on the other side of the coin, 00:15:05.96\00:15:07.84 SOY can be an exacerbator of the colic, 00:15:07.87\00:15:11.89 and so soy/dairy, both of these things and almost 00:15:11.92\00:15:14.91 I don't know that there's any baby formulas 00:15:14.92\00:15:17.94 without one of those two things... 00:15:17.97\00:15:19.61 But try one or the other. 00:15:19.64\00:15:21.24 The best thing to do is go away from the dairy 00:15:21.27\00:15:23.35 into a soy-based product. 00:15:23.38\00:15:26.41 If the child has colic, a couple of other things you can do. 00:15:26.44\00:15:30.04 You can make some catnip tea. 00:15:30.07\00:15:33.00 Just some nice, warm catnip tea, put it in a bottle, 00:15:33.03\00:15:35.76 and have the child take some warm catnip tea. 00:15:35.79\00:15:39.08 If the child is not taking it, or you don't think 00:15:39.11\00:15:41.49 they're getting enough, you could also do, 00:15:41.52\00:15:43.37 very gently and very carefully, a catnip tea enema, 00:15:43.40\00:15:47.54 which will also cause some of that to be absorbed 00:15:47.57\00:15:50.42 through the intestinal tract, and that can do 00:15:50.45\00:15:52.48 some good for the child. 00:15:52.51\00:15:53.61 You can also take some charcoal, put it in water, 00:15:53.64\00:15:56.56 stir it up, let it settle until you have just a 00:15:56.59\00:16:00.88 darkened water, and give that to the child, 00:16:00.91\00:16:04.43 in minor amounts... small amounts, they won't take a 00:16:04.46\00:16:06.47 whole lot... but some of that into the body will also 00:16:06.50\00:16:09.06 help to take up some of the gas, and could lessen the colic. 00:16:09.09\00:16:13.52 You could also put warm compresses over the abdomen 00:16:13.53\00:16:17.06 This could be quite good to eliminate the colic events. 00:16:17.09\00:16:21.64 The one that Dr. Thrash recommended some years ago 00:16:21.67\00:16:24.31 when it's something that, you know if you have a child 00:16:24.32\00:16:26.34 in the home, and you have a washing machine, 00:16:26.37\00:16:28.13 you're always going to be doing laundry. 00:16:28.16\00:16:29.56 And so what you do is, you take a child's seat, 00:16:29.59\00:16:33.02 a car seat, or a little bassinette, 00:16:33.05\00:16:35.14 and fix-it to the top of the washing machine 00:16:35.17\00:16:37.82 so it can't jiggle off... You will stay right there 00:16:37.85\00:16:40.64 in the room with her, and do a load of laundry. 00:16:40.67\00:16:43.52 Don't put Clorox in because you don't want her or him 00:16:43.55\00:16:46.40 breathing the Clorox fumes. 00:16:46.43\00:16:49.82 But just do a nice load of laundry, and just that jiggling 00:16:49.85\00:16:53.42 as the machine works back and forth, the agitator, 00:16:53.45\00:16:56.72 the spin cycle, that jiggling will often take away 00:16:56.75\00:17:01.57 the sensation... It will help the child get over that. 00:17:01.60\00:17:04.78 I know a friend of mine, when I lived in Key West, Florida, 00:17:04.81\00:17:07.36 she would always, when the child had colic, 00:17:07.39\00:17:09.76 put the child in a car seat, strap him into the car 00:17:09.79\00:17:12.36 and go for a drive. 00:17:12.39\00:17:13.59 Just that movement, that's why we walk the child 00:17:13.62\00:17:15.95 at 3 o'clock in the morning, patting them... 00:17:15.98\00:17:18.39 that movement itself... will help move the gas 00:17:18.42\00:17:20.92 and will lessen the colic events. 00:17:20.95\00:17:22.89 And so, some simple things you can do that are 00:17:22.92\00:17:25.80 no cost, and very easy to do for yourself and your child 00:17:25.83\00:17:30.24 They may not remember to thank you when they're 20, 00:17:30.27\00:17:32.72 but they will certainly thank you by being quiet, 00:17:32.75\00:17:35.20 and letting all 3 of you have a good night's rest. 00:17:35.23\00:17:38.33 And I think that's what we need to do. 00:17:38.36\00:17:40.47 Yes, very good tips on how to relieve the colic, 00:17:40.50\00:17:45.10 and have everybody get a good night of sleep. 00:17:45.13\00:17:47.58 It's often the mother who needs the help... more almost, 00:17:47.61\00:17:51.53 than the baby because the mother can be 00:17:51.56\00:17:54.04 just about fit-to-be-tied by the end of the day 00:17:54.07\00:17:56.61 ...so she needs a break from hearing the baby cry all day. 00:17:56.64\00:17:59.66 So, you can be a good medical missionary by just 00:17:59.67\00:18:02.61 staying with the baby and let the mother get out of the house 00:18:02.64\00:18:05.44 for a little while. 00:18:05.47\00:18:07.12 For a number of years, I've had a very LARGE garden. 00:18:07.15\00:18:10.22 I've enjoyed that garden a lot. 00:18:10.25\00:18:13.56 I generally plant the entire garden with something... 00:18:13.59\00:18:17.49 not always something that's harvestable. 00:18:17.52\00:18:19.74 But I enjoy planting flowers in my garden, 00:18:19.75\00:18:24.11 in my vegetable garden, and I enjoy planting a wide 00:18:24.14\00:18:27.51 variety of different kinds of vegetables and creeping 00:18:27.54\00:18:32.44 things that come to fruition sometime during the summer. 00:18:32.47\00:18:37.12 I'd like for Dr. Don Miller to tell you some of those 00:18:37.15\00:18:41.67 things that are benefits from an agricultural program 00:18:41.70\00:18:46.33 in your own home. 00:18:46.36\00:18:47.41 Dr. Miller, do you have a garden yourself? 00:18:47.42\00:18:49.93 Well... no. 00:18:49.96\00:18:53.72 My problem with gardens is that... 00:18:53.75\00:18:56.19 and I've had them! I LOVE gardening! 00:18:56.22\00:18:57.64 It's one of my favorite things to do. 00:18:57.67\00:18:59.05 And I'll plant my nice garden, and you get it all hoed up, 00:18:59.08\00:19:02.07 and you get everything planted, 00:19:02.10\00:19:03.09 and things start going up, and then I go to India... 00:19:03.12\00:19:05.20 or I go to Africa, or I go to Russia 00:19:05.23\00:19:07.39 And I come back, and I've got pigweed, 00:19:07.42\00:19:09.32 and I've got all kinds of strange things growing 00:19:09.35\00:19:11.65 in my garden, so I pretty much ... I go up to her garden! 00:19:11.66\00:19:15.57 Whenever I come home, she says, "You can take ANYTHING you want, 00:19:15.60\00:19:18.13 because she DOES have a huge garden! 00:19:18.16\00:19:20.46 And she has a high fence so the deer can't get it, 00:19:20.49\00:19:22.85 and she will have lots of stuff in her garden. 00:19:22.88\00:19:25.97 But when I can, I do plant a garden. 00:19:25.98\00:19:28.98 Years ago, we had a visiting doctor lecturing at 00:19:29.01\00:19:31.85 Uchee Pines, a very well-known physician, 00:19:31.88\00:19:34.70 and he was talking about foods and things like this 00:19:34.73\00:19:37.28 ...And someone raised their hand and said, 00:19:37.31\00:19:39.09 "Well, should we eat all organic food?" 00:19:39.12\00:19:41.33 And he said something that I've never forgotten... 00:19:41.34\00:19:44.39 He said, "Well you know, Americans consume 80% more 00:19:44.42\00:19:47.88 organic food than they produce. " 00:19:47.91\00:19:50.04 And it took us a minute to figure out what he just said. 00:19:50.07\00:19:53.11 But basically what he said was... 00:19:53.14\00:19:54.57 "Just because it says so, it doesn't mean it IS so. " 00:19:54.58\00:19:56.70 And so the best way to guarantee that you have organic food 00:19:56.73\00:20:00.19 is you grow it yourself. 00:20:00.22\00:20:01.55 And you know what it is, what you planted, when you planted it 00:20:01.58\00:20:05.12 You know what you fertilized it with. 00:20:06.09\00:20:07.50 You know IF you sprayed it, or if you did not spray it. 00:20:07.53\00:20:10.04 You know every SINGLE thing about that garden 00:20:10.07\00:20:12.83 because that garden is YOUR garden, and you're growing it. 00:20:12.86\00:20:15.27 I am one who tends to go away from things like hybrids 00:20:15.28\00:20:22.11 and, of course, genetically modified foods. 00:20:22.14\00:20:24.33 And you can guarantee that you don't have them, 00:20:24.36\00:20:26.61 if you're doing the gardening yourself. 00:20:26.64\00:20:28.65 And there's something else about the joy of being 00:20:28.68\00:20:31.44 out into the garden in the early morning hours 00:20:31.47\00:20:33.72 and just working in the dirt. 00:20:33.75\00:20:35.03 I think there's something transferred. 00:20:35.06\00:20:36.42 As a matter of fact, when I've got a good garden going, 00:20:36.43\00:20:39.21 I like to work in my bare feet. 00:20:39.24\00:20:40.66 There's something about the soil in contact with 00:20:40.69\00:20:44.27 the feet that just sort of energizes me. 00:20:44.28\00:20:47.07 There's also other good benefits. 00:20:47.10\00:20:49.17 ...As you're doing your gardening, 00:20:49.18\00:20:50.33 you know, you got to bend down, you got to stand up, 00:20:50.36\00:20:52.18 you got to bend down, and stand up. 00:20:52.21\00:20:53.51 Well that's called exercise. 00:20:53.54\00:20:54.91 It's called stretching. 00:20:54.94\00:20:56.91 We find that people who are really into gardening, 00:20:56.95\00:20:59.98 get plenty of exercise, they get plenty of stretching, 00:21:00.01\00:21:03.00 and plenty of aerobic exercise. 00:21:03.04\00:21:04.89 Have you ever gone up about 50 feet of corn rows 00:21:04.92\00:21:08.98 trying to hoe them out, hoe all the weeds, 00:21:08.99\00:21:11.15 you're getting some good aerobic exercise. 00:21:11.18\00:21:13.16 So that's one of the other benefits, it's just getting 00:21:13.19\00:21:15.94 out there and getting that exercise. 00:21:15.97\00:21:18.39 You got the fresh air, you've got the sunshine. 00:21:18.42\00:21:20.66 You've got that contact with nature which is so 00:21:20.69\00:21:23.92 vitally important when you're out there 00:21:23.95\00:21:26.00 in your particular gardens. 00:21:26.01\00:21:27.92 And, one of my favorite benefits is you can eat things fresh. 00:21:27.95\00:21:32.84 I mean, we're talking about really fresh! 00:21:32.87\00:21:35.12 And we don't realize how important it is to eat things 00:21:35.15\00:21:37.86 fresh... as soon as a plant is plucked from... 00:21:37.89\00:21:41.05 or a fruit, or a vegetable is plucked from its 00:21:41.08\00:21:43.69 plant, it starts to degrade in certain ways. 00:21:43.72\00:21:46.54 But if you can go out there in your garden, pluck your 00:21:46.57\00:21:49.38 fruit, or your vegetable, go back into the house and eat it 00:21:49.41\00:21:52.43 right then, you're getting benefits that you will get 00:21:52.46\00:21:55.19 no other way from your food, than doing it exactly that way. 00:21:55.22\00:21:58.86 So that's one of the other very nice benefits 00:21:58.89\00:22:01.20 of going out there in your garden. 00:22:01.23\00:22:03.34 And gardening is something that you can do year round. 00:22:03.38\00:22:07.02 I like to grow sprouts in the house. 00:22:07.05\00:22:09.48 I like to make some type of little 00:22:09.51\00:22:11.07 hot frames outside my house. 00:22:11.10\00:22:13.63 I just use PVC, and bend it over against my house 00:22:13.74\00:22:17.02 and plant my plants in there. 00:22:17.05\00:22:18.80 I have some black plastic that will absorb the sun's rays. 00:22:18.83\00:22:21.71 It's a little bit easier when you live in a state like Alabama 00:22:21.74\00:22:25.20 You couldn't do that as much up north, 00:22:25.23\00:22:27.12 but up north, you can plant things that grow 00:22:27.15\00:22:29.13 UNDER the ground, like your carrots... 00:22:29.16\00:22:30.89 And then, what you do is, you heavily mulch over there. 00:22:30.92\00:22:33.66 And you can go out there in the middle of the winter, 00:22:33.69\00:22:36.20 move your mulch away, and pull up fresh carrots. 00:22:36.23\00:22:39.16 And so, I'd recommend you do it that way... 00:22:39.19\00:22:40.86 is have something growing fresh year round. 00:22:40.89\00:22:43.76 You've got the benefits of the fresh food, 00:22:43.79\00:22:45.64 you've got the benefits of the exercise, 00:22:45.67\00:22:48.01 you've got the benefits of knowing that you've 00:22:48.04\00:22:49.49 done something good. 00:22:49.52\00:22:50.82 And if you do it right, now this is, I guess this is sort of a 00:22:50.85\00:22:54.39 if you REALLY do it right... 00:22:54.42\00:22:56.03 Normally, it costs more for your food if you garden 00:22:56.04\00:22:59.79 than if you buy it at the store. 00:22:59.82\00:23:00.93 That's only because we don't know what we're doing. 00:23:00.96\00:23:02.80 But if you really get into gardening, 00:23:02.83\00:23:04.75 you're going to save a lot of money too. 00:23:04.78\00:23:06.82 You save money, you save your health, 00:23:06.85\00:23:09.07 and you get ALL the benefits that God has placed 00:23:09.10\00:23:11.49 into His soil and into His good foods. 00:23:11.52\00:23:14.00 And so, that's what I'd recommend you do, Dr. Thrash. 00:23:14.03\00:23:16.56 Yes, and I like to do just as you said, 00:23:16.59\00:23:19.08 when I come home from the office, I stop by the garden 00:23:19.09\00:23:22.59 pick some fresh things, and go right in the house 00:23:22.62\00:23:25.15 and prepare those for lunch, and often in just a matter of 00:23:25.18\00:23:28.37 minutes I can have lunch on the table with things that 00:23:28.40\00:23:31.77 came FRESH from the garden 00:23:31.80\00:23:33.66 And close on the heels of gardening... 00:23:33.69\00:23:37.52 is that of housekeeping. 00:23:37.56\00:23:39.27 I'd like to talk about some of the benefits of good 00:23:39.31\00:23:42.16 housekeeping. 00:23:42.19\00:23:43.44 When a woman, or a man is good at housekeeping, 00:23:43.47\00:23:47.69 the house can be orderly all the time, or almost so. 00:23:47.70\00:23:53.41 When a house is neat, even if you haven't had time to 00:23:53.44\00:23:58.97 dust, or to mop, or vacuum... 00:23:59.00\00:24:01.64 If the house is neat, it will look clean even if those 00:24:01.67\00:24:05.45 other things are not done... which might make you 00:24:05.48\00:24:09.16 label it as "not clean" 00:24:09.19\00:24:11.14 But being NEAT, everything looks good. 00:24:11.17\00:24:15.08 And so I recommend that if you're the kind of person 00:24:15.11\00:24:18.65 who allows clutter just to build up, that there be times 00:24:18.68\00:24:22.68 when you de-clutter your house. 00:24:22.71\00:24:24.63 Just go around, get everything, and I have an apron 00:24:24.66\00:24:28.36 like the apron that carpenters wear, 00:24:28.39\00:24:30.95 that I put things in various pockets. 00:24:30.98\00:24:33.64 This pocket is to go to the bedroom, 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.21 and this pocket is to go to the bathroom, 00:24:35.24\00:24:37.01 and this pocket is to go to the kitchen! 00:24:37.04\00:24:38.79 So wherever I find something that's going to go to 00:24:38.82\00:24:41.64 one of these places, I simply put it in that pocket 00:24:41.67\00:24:44.69 ...then when I'm in that room, I put it in its proper place. 00:24:44.72\00:24:48.65 And often, within a matter of minutes, I can have my 00:24:48.68\00:24:52.06 whole house all freshly tidied up and looking nice. 00:24:52.09\00:24:56.64 There's nothing like the joy of going to bed in a very neat home 00:24:56.65\00:25:02.64 You can make your house a little bit of heaven. 00:25:02.67\00:25:06.95 There should always be sunshine in your home. 00:25:06.98\00:25:10.21 That sunshine of your presence there. 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.73 Now, another benefit of a tidy and orderly and clean home, 00:25:12.76\00:25:18.46 is that it reduces allergies. 00:25:18.49\00:25:20.84 People who have allergies, if the drapes and the curtains 00:25:20.87\00:25:27.45 are dusty, and the carpet has not been vacuumed 00:25:27.48\00:25:31.11 in a month or 2, they're going to have a lot more allergies 00:25:31.14\00:25:35.29 than the person who does not have that kind of environment. 00:25:35.32\00:25:39.37 So, there are a number of benefits besides the 00:25:39.40\00:25:43.94 satisfaction of having a neat and orderly home... 00:25:43.97\00:25:46.84 that can give you good health. 00:25:46.87\00:25:50.19 Now, there are some other health issues that Dr. Don Miller 00:25:50.22\00:25:55.81 will talk with you about. 00:25:55.84\00:25:57.12 I know that Dr. Miller had a bad cough not very long ago, 00:25:57.15\00:26:01.84 so maybe he'll talk with us about that now. 00:26:01.87\00:26:04.43 I thought I was going to die. 00:26:04.46\00:26:05.93 I hate having coughs. 00:26:05.96\00:26:07.17 I did have a very severe cough, 00:26:07.20\00:26:09.52 and there are some things you can do for coughs. 00:26:09.53\00:26:11.57 There are some severe coughs, and there are just some 00:26:11.60\00:26:13.72 normal coughs. 00:26:13.75\00:26:14.85 I would say the #1 cough, and the #1 reason for the cough 00:26:14.86\00:26:19.39 is dehydration, and the best cough medicine is 00:26:19.42\00:26:21.73 just drink some water. 00:26:21.76\00:26:22.91 If you've ever been there, in a service, maybe a church service, 00:26:22.94\00:26:27.06 or a speech, and someone is up there talking... 00:26:27.07\00:26:29.74 pretty soon they start coughing and... cough, cough 00:26:29.77\00:26:31.79 it's one of these things, a little dry cough. 00:26:31.82\00:26:33.90 Immediately, someone goes running out and comes back in 00:26:33.93\00:26:36.78 and sets a glass of water up there... 00:26:36.81\00:26:38.38 And immediately they take a sip, 00:26:38.41\00:26:39.76 and they're perfectly fine for a while. 00:26:39.80\00:26:41.64 So the best thing to do, first of all for a cough, 00:26:41.67\00:26:43.94 is to drink some water. 00:26:43.97\00:26:45.43 There are other things you can do. 00:26:45.46\00:26:46.94 There are some very nice cough medicines you can make. 00:26:46.97\00:26:49.88 Take a lemon, juice a lemon, add some honey to the lemon, 00:26:49.91\00:26:54.05 add a little bit of eucalyptus oil to that... 00:26:54.08\00:26:56.96 And then take small amounts of this... 00:26:56.99\00:26:58.78 It's very soothing to the throat. 00:26:58.79\00:27:00.33 Basically, a cough is a reflex action telling 00:27:00.36\00:27:03.58 the body, "There's something down here, let's get rid of it " 00:27:03.61\00:27:06.82 As we drink our water, we hydrate the lungs, 00:27:06.85\00:27:09.29 allow the mucus to be a little bit less viscous 00:27:09.32\00:27:12.72 so things can move out much better off. 00:27:12.75\00:27:15.65 You can also make sort of a poultice of cayenne pepper. 00:27:15.66\00:27:19.42 Take a quart of water and boil it, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne 00:27:19.45\00:27:22.92 pepper, and then dip a cloth in there, wring it out, 00:27:22.95\00:27:26.45 when it's able to be touched, wrap that around the throat. 00:27:26.48\00:27:30.30 That is very nice to help with the cough. 00:27:30.33\00:27:34.43 There are other things you can do... 00:27:34.44\00:27:35.85 cough drops... I like certain ones that are 00:27:35.88\00:27:38.55 nice, but make your own, drink your water 00:27:38.58\00:27:41.31 and you won't have so many problems with the coughs. 00:27:41.32\00:27:43.99 Very good... 00:27:44.02\00:27:45.37 And I hope the next time you have a cough, 00:27:45.40\00:27:47.65 that some of these remedies will help you. 00:27:47.68\00:27:49.59 I just love talking about remedies because people 00:27:49.62\00:27:52.74 feel better when they use a good remedy! 00:27:52.78\00:27:55.04
