Even very healthy people can get sick. 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.86 In fact, sometimes the most healthy people seem to 00:00:04.89\00:00:08.96 come down, very frequently, with some kind of illness. 00:00:08.99\00:00:12.15 To find the cause of an illness, may require a good long 00:00:12.18\00:00:16.74 process of elimination. 00:00:16.77\00:00:18.51 So, we'd like to talk with you about some of these things 00:00:18.54\00:00:21.63 and how you can get so that you can avoid some illnesses 00:00:21.66\00:00:25.09 and so that you can be healthier after you've had an illness. 00:00:25.12\00:00:29.04 So, stay with us! 00:00:29.07\00:00:31.00 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:50.53\00:00:52.65 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.43 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:56.46\00:01:00.59 Now finding the reason why you have a sickness 00:01:00.60\00:01:03.94 may require quite a good long time of 00:01:03.97\00:01:08.32 elimination of various things. 00:01:08.36\00:01:09.95 You may say, "Well, it might have been due to this, 00:01:09.99\00:01:12.69 or it might have been due to that" 00:01:12.72\00:01:14.07 But the first thing to ascertain is why you think you got sick. 00:01:14.08\00:01:18.97 So, take a look at your habits! 00:01:19.00\00:01:21.84 Look at every habit of life. 00:01:21.88\00:01:23.80 What time you go to bed. 00:01:23.84\00:01:25.48 How you eat. How you drink. 00:01:25.51\00:01:27.01 Do you have your windows open at night so that you have 00:01:27.05\00:01:30.41 good circulation of air in your bedroom at night. 00:01:30.44\00:01:33.59 Just scrutinize every point... 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.59 What did I do last night? 00:01:36.62\00:01:38.07 Did I lose sleep? Was my pillow comfortable? 00:01:38.08\00:01:41.92 Was it cold in my bedroom? 00:01:41.95\00:01:44.24 You know you just ask all sorts of questions of yourself 00:01:44.27\00:01:47.74 so that you can find out what it is that's involved 00:01:47.77\00:01:51.42 in your having gotten sick. 00:01:51.45\00:01:53.67 So the first thing that you do is to eliminate 00:01:53.70\00:01:56.64 all those health habits that lead to sickness. 00:01:56.67\00:02:00.64 Then, look at your surroundings. 00:02:00.67\00:02:02.88 Is there something in your surroundings that makes 00:02:02.91\00:02:07.16 your surroundings unhealthful? 00:02:07.19\00:02:09.52 If so, do your best to eliminate those. 00:02:09.55\00:02:12.12 And as you work with this kind of thing, 00:02:12.15\00:02:14.65 you can make your environment you can make yourself, 00:02:14.68\00:02:17.55 you can make your habits... all very much more healthy. 00:02:17.56\00:02:21.05 Now when you have found out the reason for your problem, 00:02:21.08\00:02:25.27 then you assist nature in the evicting of those conditions 00:02:25.30\00:02:32.22 that have resulted from broken health law. 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.76 And then obedience to law makes it so that health is not 00:02:34.79\00:02:38.69 necessarily something that's a happenstance... 00:02:38.72\00:02:42.66 It's not by chance that we are healthy, 00:02:42.69\00:02:44.91 or not by chance that we become ill. 00:02:44.94\00:02:48.79 Now, the way to assist nature is by obedience to the usual 00:02:48.82\00:02:54.73 laws of health... having to do with the way that we 00:02:54.76\00:02:57.94 drink, eat, sleep, rest, breathe... all of those things 00:02:57.97\00:03:04.08 ...posture, warmth, hydration, all of those things that 00:03:04.11\00:03:08.35 have to do with the laws of health. 00:03:08.38\00:03:11.47 We want to observe those and be right on top of our lifestyle 00:03:11.50\00:03:18.51 Now there are problems at times with a stomach upset. 00:03:18.54\00:03:22.07 Some people are upset in the stomach when they 00:03:22.08\00:03:25.18 take any kind of unusual food... 00:03:25.19\00:03:27.28 Or, when they eat more than one food of a certain class 00:03:27.31\00:03:31.72 at the same meal... they join those things together 00:03:31.75\00:03:34.73 they're going to get sick. 00:03:34.76\00:03:36.06 Sometimes it's a serious illness that lasts a day or so, 00:03:36.09\00:03:39.53 sometimes it's a few minutes to a few hours 00:03:39.56\00:03:41.77 But by learning who you are, by learning the kinds of 00:03:41.80\00:03:46.82 things that affect your health, you can, little by little, 00:03:46.85\00:03:50.43 get so that you can improve your health. 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.34 With stomach upsets, there's a wide variety 00:03:53.37\00:03:55.88 of things that can cause a stomach upset. 00:03:55.91\00:03:59.04 One of those things is a simple viral infection. 00:03:59.07\00:04:04.10 It may be specific for the gastrointestinal tract. 00:04:04.13\00:04:09.07 One of the enteroviruses that specifically 00:04:09.10\00:04:13.36 hits the intestinal tract. 00:04:13.39\00:04:15.03 We might call it the intestinal flu. 00:04:15.06\00:04:17.80 Those viruses are numerous... 00:04:17.83\00:04:20.50 there are many different kinds of those. 00:04:20.53\00:04:22.61 Then, there are some bacteria that can also cause a 00:04:22.64\00:04:27.19 gastroenteritis... an inflammation of the stomach, 00:04:27.22\00:04:31.23 and the small bowel... "gastro-enteritis" 00:04:31.26\00:04:35.29 What are some of those... like salmonella 00:04:35.32\00:04:37.93 That's a typhoid-like germ, and can cause 00:04:37.96\00:04:42.89 a quite serious illness... even life-threatening. 00:04:42.92\00:04:46.95 Then there is another one... a very close relative 00:04:46.98\00:04:50.13 of the salmonella called "shigella" 00:04:50.16\00:04:55.34 and this one can be life-threatening as well. 00:04:55.37\00:04:57.71 What happens with these germs, these bacteria 00:04:57.74\00:05:01.54 ...they cause the infection of the surfaces 00:05:01.57\00:05:06.54 of the intestinal tract, and when the surface is involved, 00:05:06.55\00:05:11.23 you may get an ulceration which then gives you 00:05:11.26\00:05:13.96 a bloody diarrhea which is called "dysentery" 00:05:13.99\00:05:17.44 When diarrhea becomes bloody, then it's called "dysentery" 00:05:17.47\00:05:21.93 And the bloody diarrhea can be so intense that the person can 00:05:21.96\00:05:26.89 become anemic, or they can become even fatally dehydrated. 00:05:26.92\00:05:31.43 So it's important at the very outset to make sure 00:05:31.46\00:05:34.60 the person with a bacterial infection of the 00:05:34.63\00:05:38.90 gastrointestinal tract stays well-hydrated. 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.85 Principally, that means drinking plenty of water. 00:05:42.86\00:05:45.52 Now because nausea and vomiting can be a part of the problem 00:05:45.55\00:05:51.06 with a gastroenteritis... the individual with the 00:05:51.09\00:05:55.29 gastroenteritis may tell you "EVERYTHING, even the thought 00:05:55.32\00:05:59.87 of putting ANYTHING into my mouth... I have an absolute 00:05:59.90\00:06:04.82 revulsion to that" 00:06:04.85\00:06:06.70 So they cannot take water because it makes them nauseated 00:06:06.73\00:06:09.71 and then they vomit. 00:06:09.74\00:06:11.13 You encourage them to take charcoal... because charcoal 00:06:11.14\00:06:16.60 is the treatment of choice at the beginning of ANY KIND 00:06:16.63\00:06:21.12 of gastroenteritis. 00:06:21.15\00:06:22.35 You have an upset stomach? Think FIRST of charcoal. 00:06:22.38\00:06:25.58 If you don't have charcoal available immediately, 00:06:25.61\00:06:27.95 then think first of water. 00:06:27.98\00:06:30.20 Start drinking water... drink plenty of it, all that you can! 00:06:30.23\00:06:34.70 If you're nauseated, you take the charcoal, 00:06:34.73\00:06:38.37 stir it into water, drink it down. 00:06:38.40\00:06:41.47 It stays down about 5 minutes, not feeling comfortable 00:06:41.50\00:06:45.63 any of the time, and eventually it comes back up. 00:06:45.64\00:06:48.73 Then what do you do? 00:06:48.76\00:06:50.47 Take it again immediately. 00:06:50.50\00:06:52.23 In fact, have someone, if you can't move around very well, 00:06:52.26\00:06:55.98 have someone make another glass of charcoal water for you 00:06:56.01\00:06:59.78 and be just ready to drink it again... 00:06:59.81\00:07:02.09 immediately after you have vomited. 00:07:02.12\00:07:04.49 With that immediate drinking of the next glass, 00:07:04.52\00:07:09.47 you capitalized on a little device that the body has 00:07:09.50\00:07:15.10 called a "refractory period. " 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.79 It's a time when you cannot vomit because you have just 00:07:17.82\00:07:21.13 completed that reflexive cycle of vomiting, 00:07:21.16\00:07:24.86 and you cannot vomit, and so that can be very helpful. 00:07:24.89\00:07:28.64 Another type of gastroenteritis is "E. coli" 00:07:28.67\00:07:33.76 That's a parasite... You might think that we don't 00:07:33.79\00:07:37.94 have much E. coli in this country that's the 00:07:37.97\00:07:43.63 "Enterobius coli," which is a little parasite... 00:07:43.66\00:07:47.74 You might think we don't have much of that 00:07:47.77\00:07:49.64 in this country, but we do. 00:07:49.67\00:07:51.59 We still have this kind of ameba ... amebic dysentery 00:07:51.60\00:07:57.24 We still have that, and so people can have that, 00:07:57.25\00:08:00.71 and the ulcerations of the intestinal tract caused by 00:08:00.74\00:08:05.57 this ameba can, indeed, cause a serious problem. 00:08:05.60\00:08:11.67 They can have nausea and vomiting... 00:08:11.70\00:08:13.33 They can also have the dysentery... 00:08:13.36\00:08:15.62 In fact, they are likely to have dysentery. 00:08:15.65\00:08:18.10 Now with the germ, the little bacillus, 00:08:18.13\00:08:24.69 that we call E. coli, or "Escherichia coli," this one is 00:08:24.72\00:08:31.46 a germ that also invades the wall of the bowel 00:08:31.49\00:08:36.02 and causes ulceration. 00:08:36.05\00:08:38.04 With these ulcerations come both nausea and vomiting 00:08:38.07\00:08:41.84 or an upset stomach and diarrhea. 00:08:41.87\00:08:44.48 It can last virtually for years if it isn't treated correctly. 00:08:44.51\00:08:49.75 There are some natural remedies to use to treat 00:08:49.78\00:08:52.66 both the parasites, as well as the E. coli germ 00:08:52.69\00:08:57.59 and these can be very helpful, very effective in ridding 00:08:57.62\00:09:03.04 yourself of these problems. 00:09:03.05\00:09:05.22 Now, at this time, Dr. Miller is going to talk with you about 00:09:05.25\00:09:10.30 another kind of gastroenteritis, and that is a food poisoning 00:09:10.33\00:09:16.00 type of gastroenteritis. 00:09:16.03\00:09:17.37 Dr. Miller, have you ever had a problem with 00:09:17.40\00:09:20.20 that in all your travels? 00:09:20.23\00:09:21.69 I hate to think about the problems I've had with 00:09:21.72\00:09:24.05 food poisonings. 00:09:24.08\00:09:25.60 I think the last time I had one, I was in India... 00:09:25.63\00:09:28.07 And I had been traveling around, and I was going to a little area 00:09:28.10\00:09:32.86 where another person on our team was talking to some people 00:09:32.89\00:09:36.51 and he had been invited to these people's home that evening. 00:09:36.54\00:09:40.76 So he thought he'd take me along with him. 00:09:40.79\00:09:43.68 So we went into this lovely home, lovely people 00:09:43.71\00:09:46.38 They were very hospitable there. 00:09:46.41\00:09:48.26 And, as we were sitting there chatting with our translators, 00:09:48.29\00:09:52.60 they brought out 2 trays laden down with grapes. 00:09:52.63\00:09:56.62 And they brought one to the other man and one tray to me. 00:09:56.65\00:10:00.32 And, here I'm sitting there with a big tray of 00:10:00.35\00:10:03.83 freshly washed grapes. 00:10:03.86\00:10:05.96 And I smiled and I said to my translator, "I can't eat these" 00:10:05.99\00:10:10.46 and he says... "You have to" 00:10:10.49\00:10:11.98 I said, "I can't eat these, they just washed them" 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.15 And he says... "You HAVE to eat those, they'll be offended" 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.69 I said, "But they washed them in their water. " 00:10:16.72\00:10:18.33 You see, I wasn't used to their water. 00:10:18.36\00:10:20.73 It's amazing that in your country, you're used to 00:10:20.76\00:10:23.80 the organisms that are in the area, 00:10:23.83\00:10:26.02 but you go somewhere else, and it's not that way. 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.35 Well, I finally relented and ate the grapes. 00:10:28.38\00:10:31.42 I did not want to offend the people. 00:10:31.45\00:10:33.16 And I GOT one of the worse cases of food poisoning 00:10:33.19\00:10:36.46 I've ever had that night. 00:10:36.47\00:10:37.55 I was in misery the entire night and half the next day, 00:10:37.58\00:10:41.22 because of the fact that I got something into my body 00:10:41.25\00:10:44.21 from a food that I was eating. 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.09 Food poisonings are on the rise. 00:10:46.12\00:10:48.91 and we wonder, why are they on the rise? 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.15 Now usually, we used to think most food poisonings are 00:10:51.18\00:10:55.98 caused from animal products, and still, there is a huge 00:10:56.01\00:10:59.33 amount of diseases coming from animal products. 00:10:59.36\00:11:02.40 But now, is on the rise in fruits and vegetables too. 00:11:02.43\00:11:06.40 And the reason why is, there is contamination on the foods. 00:11:06.43\00:11:10.62 You remember a few years ago, there was an outbreak 00:11:10.65\00:11:12.65 of hepatitis A linked to SCALLIONS! 00:11:12.68\00:11:17.01 Now how in the world do scallions get hepatitis A? 00:11:17.04\00:11:20.13 Well the scallions didn't have hepatitis A, 00:11:20.14\00:11:21.99 the person who was picking the scallions, 00:11:22.00\00:11:25.10 or maybe in the back room with the scallions 00:11:25.13\00:11:27.29 had hepatitis A... cross-contaminated and the 00:11:27.32\00:11:30.65 person consuming those products got the hepatitis A. 00:11:30.68\00:11:34.30 So I'll just say, at this point, what you need to do 00:11:34.33\00:11:38.11 is make sure that ALWAYS, every time you receive 00:11:38.14\00:11:41.67 fresh produce, that you wash it. 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.49 You see, people are getting more wise about their diets now 00:11:43.52\00:11:46.57 and are eating more fresh produce, and that's a good thing 00:11:46.60\00:11:49.62 We're to be eating fresh fruits and vegetables 00:11:49.65\00:11:51.78 And I think that's what God wants us to do, 00:11:51.79\00:11:54.26 and that is what we should do. 00:11:54.29\00:11:55.50 But we need to make sure... 00:11:55.51\00:11:57.28 They did a study of 1003 food samples in 1999 and 2000 00:11:57.31\00:12:04.10 to see what type of bacteria, if there were bacteria, 00:12:04.13\00:12:08.10 coming from 21 different countries. 00:12:08.13\00:12:10.19 When they examined the 1003 different food samples 00:12:10.22\00:12:15.09 coming from other countries, 4.4% had bacterial infections 00:12:15.12\00:12:19.46 upon the food themselves. 00:12:19.49\00:12:21.36 And if we would take them into our bodies, 00:12:21.39\00:12:23.74 we would get that thing. 00:12:23.77\00:12:26.12 I was in Singapore one time years ago when I was 00:12:26.15\00:12:28.95 in the Marine Corps, and I was sort of in a confines 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.56 with a young man... we were on a tour of the 00:12:32.59\00:12:34.29 City of Singapore, and he told me that he had had 00:12:34.32\00:12:37.63 3 cases of food poisoning in a couple of months' period of time 00:12:37.66\00:12:42.33 What he liked to do, he liked to go down into the back street 00:12:42.36\00:12:46.27 where just the people from the local areas lived 00:12:46.30\00:12:48.98 and eat what they ate. 00:12:49.01\00:12:50.70 He got one case of food poisoning, I remember 00:12:51.70\00:12:53.50 particularly from eating jellyfish. 00:12:53.53\00:12:56.18 I don't know how you eat a jellyfish... 00:12:56.21\00:12:58.46 I guess with soy butter or something, 00:12:58.49\00:13:00.80 but he ate a lot of jellyfish and got extremely sick 00:13:00.81\00:13:04.01 with the food poisoning from that. 00:13:04.04\00:13:05.36 So what we need to do... is stay away from the 00:13:05.39\00:13:07.72 strange foods... Make sure that we CLEAN the foods. 00:13:07.75\00:13:10.42 I don't say stay away from the strange foods. 00:13:10.45\00:13:12.43 Make sure we have washed them very well. 00:13:12.46\00:13:14.53 What happens when you go to a restaurant? 00:13:14.56\00:13:16.25 You can't wash and you can't go up there 00:13:16.28\00:13:17.96 and take your salad bar, and then go back to the 00:13:17.99\00:13:19.76 bathroom wash it all off. 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.03 So basically, you are at risk when you no longer 00:13:21.06\00:13:25.25 have control of the preparation of the food 00:13:25.28\00:13:28.16 in your own hands. 00:13:28.19\00:13:29.63 Dr. Thrash has already mentioned the best thing you can do 00:13:29.66\00:13:32.45 for a food poisoning is the charcoal. 00:13:32.48\00:13:35.35 The body's natural reaction to a poisoning is to purge. 00:13:35.38\00:13:39.69 To get rid of it and if you feel that way, 00:13:39.72\00:13:42.14 go ahead and get rid of it. 00:13:42.17\00:13:43.91 That's the best thing to do, 00:13:43.94\00:13:45.13 and then take the charcoal until your symptoms 00:13:45.16\00:13:47.94 are gone, and that's a good thing. 00:13:47.98\00:13:49.27 There are other things that cause the upset stomach 00:13:49.31\00:13:53.25 and one is drugs. 00:13:53.26\00:13:54.37 We're talking about medicinal drugs. 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.52 EVERY medicinal drug is irritating to the stomach. 00:13:56.55\00:14:00.55 No matter what it is, it's going to cause some irritation. 00:14:00.58\00:14:02.97 And so, some people are more sensitive to one 00:14:03.00\00:14:06.96 drug than another. 00:14:07.00\00:14:07.99 And so, I just want to give you that warning. 00:14:08.03\00:14:09.92 If every time you take your drug, you feel like you're 00:14:09.95\00:14:11.95 nauseous... I had a case one time, 00:14:11.98\00:14:14.17 of a patient who came to Uchee Pines, 00:14:14.20\00:14:16.31 and she had a large amount of problems. 00:14:16.34\00:14:22.17 And, she was taking 34 different medications. 00:14:22.20\00:14:25.72 Well, I went back and took her list of medications 00:14:25.75\00:14:28.93 to our PDR, "Physician's Desk Reference" 00:14:28.96\00:14:32.07 and I ran the side effects of the drugs and found out 00:14:32.10\00:14:35.70 that she was taking most of her drugs for side effects 00:14:35.73\00:14:38.60 of her drugs. 00:14:38.63\00:14:39.72 I remember when I was stationed in Key West, Florida, 00:14:39.75\00:14:42.14 we had a warrant officer there at the Marine barracks 00:14:42.17\00:14:46.03 and he LOVED fiery foods. 00:14:46.06\00:14:48.71 He would eat fiery foods 3 meals a day, 00:14:48.74\00:14:51.19 and he lived between those meals on Tums. 00:14:51.22\00:14:54.73 Now was Tums the medication for his problem? 00:14:54.76\00:14:58.97 No, the medication for his problem was 00:14:59.00\00:15:00.89 quit eating the fiery foods. 00:15:00.92\00:15:03.46 And so find out what's irritating the stomach, 00:15:03.49\00:15:05.90 leave those things off, and I don't think you'll have 00:15:05.93\00:15:08.72 the problem anymore. 00:15:08.75\00:15:10.45 Is that okay, Dr. Thrash? 00:15:10.48\00:15:11.54 That's sounds good! 00:15:11.57\00:15:12.79 Yes, if we leave those things alone... that cause the 00:15:12.82\00:15:15.96 the stomach to be irritated, then we also have a strong 00:15:15.99\00:15:20.63 and healthy stomach, so that it can RESIST such infections 00:15:20.66\00:15:24.57 as H. pylori. 00:15:24.60\00:15:26.57 Now, you have probably heard of H. pylori recently 00:15:26.60\00:15:29.80 in relation to peptic ulcers. 00:15:29.83\00:15:32.51 Now when I was in medical school, we didn't know what 00:15:32.54\00:15:36.27 caused peptic ulcers. 00:15:36.30\00:15:37.60 We really thought that it was due to some kind of emotional 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.60 problem, and too much acid in the stomach. 00:15:41.63\00:15:44.45 Well I'm sure that both of those can be a part of the overall 00:15:44.48\00:15:50.15 problem that enables you to lose your resistance to 00:15:50.18\00:15:55.17 the H. pylori, and so it invades your stomach, 00:15:55.20\00:15:58.46 any by invading your stomach, then it gets a toehold 00:15:58.49\00:16:02.70 in your gastrointestinal tract, and can give you symptoms 00:16:02.73\00:16:06.03 throughout the intestinal tract. 00:16:06.06\00:16:07.88 But the symptoms in the stomach are usually pain, 00:16:07.91\00:16:10.88 but can also be nausea, can be a sense of burning, 00:16:10.91\00:16:15.27 or a tightening in the stomach. 00:16:15.30\00:16:17.82 You can also get a "dumping syndrome" from an 00:16:17.85\00:16:21.76 ulcer in the stomach where the stomach does not 00:16:21.79\00:16:26.84 hold on to the food long enough and it passes quickly 00:16:26.87\00:16:29.94 into the small bowel and gives you a sense of faintness 00:16:29.95\00:16:34.00 and fatigue, and weakness immediately after you eat. 00:16:34.03\00:16:38.77 It can also do the reverse. 00:16:38.78\00:16:40.47 It can cause a constriction of the pylorus, 00:16:40.50\00:16:44.00 so that you cannot empty the stomach, 00:16:44.01\00:16:46.35 and then you have an uncomfortable full sense 00:16:46.38\00:16:49.65 of pressure inside the stomach. 00:16:49.68\00:16:52.94 All of these can be due to the H. pylori germ. 00:16:52.97\00:16:56.35 Now, the H. pylori germ can affect you... 00:16:56.38\00:17:01.93 can invade your tissues better if you've been using 00:17:01.96\00:17:05.74 fiery foods, or various kinds of drugs, or you don't 00:17:05.77\00:17:09.46 drink enough water, or you take aspirin, or vinegary foods 00:17:09.49\00:17:15.53 ...All of those kinds of things can weaken the wall of the 00:17:15.56\00:17:18.87 stomach and make it so that that germ can penetrate 00:17:18.90\00:17:22.47 the lining and make you have a ulcer there. 00:17:22.50\00:17:26.32 So we get a peptic ulcer in that way... So what can you do? 00:17:26.35\00:17:29.27 Well fortunately, there are some VERY GOOD THINGS 00:17:29.30\00:17:32.90 that you can use for ANY kind of gastroenteritis 00:17:32.93\00:17:36.36 whether it be due to shigella, or salmonella, or one of the 00:17:36.39\00:17:41.66 viruses, or whether it's due to H. pylori 00:17:41.69\00:17:44.86 and that's garlic 00:17:44.89\00:17:45.92 Garlic, without a doubt, is one of our most widely useful herbs. 00:17:45.95\00:17:53.22 Now there are times when people will tell you... 00:17:53.25\00:17:56.30 "Well I took garlic and it didn't help. " 00:17:56.33\00:17:58.13 Then your next question should be... "How much did you take?" 00:17:58.16\00:18:00.92 And most of the time, if it didn't help at all, 00:18:00.95\00:18:03.37 it was because, if it's a gastroenteritis, 00:18:03.40\00:18:05.92 because they didn't take enough. 00:18:05.93\00:18:08.00 And "enough" is often just short of making the person 00:18:08.03\00:18:13.60 feel uncomfortable so that they may actually feel 00:18:13.61\00:18:17.12 a bit more nauseated as soon as they have had the garlic 00:18:17.15\00:18:21.62 to be introduced into the stomach. 00:18:21.65\00:18:23.99 So the garlic needs to be diluted enough with something, 00:18:24.02\00:18:28.37 either fruit juice, like tomato juice, or some other fruit juice 00:18:28.40\00:18:33.29 that you might choose... or just with water 00:18:33.32\00:18:36.86 and then drink it slowly, sip it, 00:18:36.87\00:18:39.60 and in this way, you can avoid that nausea that 00:18:39.63\00:18:42.44 that comes from taking too much garlic too quickly. 00:18:42.47\00:18:45.62 Then we have also a wide variety of other herbal remedies 00:18:45.65\00:18:49.49 such as goldenseal, Echinacea, grapefruit seed extract, 00:18:49.52\00:18:54.28 elderberry extract which you can make yourself from 00:18:54.31\00:18:58.46 elderberries that you pick yourself in a nearby swampy area 00:18:58.49\00:19:05.27 So these are some things that you can do for the H. pylori. 00:19:05.30\00:19:08.72 You need to treat it for a whole month so that 00:19:08.75\00:19:11.65 the germ does not hide itself somewhere in its little ulcer 00:19:11.68\00:19:18.39 so that your treatment is not effective. 00:19:18.42\00:19:21.17 Now, as we consider some other things that can cause 00:19:21.18\00:19:26.39 an upset stomach, emotions are one of those things. 00:19:26.42\00:19:29.80 And I'm sure that Dr. Miller, as you have traveled around 00:19:29.83\00:19:33.93 in doing health education in various parts of the world, 00:19:33.96\00:19:36.80 that you have had a variety of emotions... 00:19:36.83\00:19:40.00 loneliness, or maybe sometimes even fear or anxiety 00:19:40.03\00:19:44.41 What can you tell us about how emotions can upset the stomach? 00:19:44.42\00:19:47.65 Well, I can only talk from my own personal experience. 00:19:47.68\00:19:51.23 Have you ever heard someone say... 00:19:51.26\00:19:52.63 "You make me sick to my stomach" 00:19:52.66\00:19:54.17 Well that really does happen. 00:19:54.20\00:19:55.88 I want to just mention a couple of case histories 00:19:55.91\00:19:58.15 in my own experience. 00:19:58.18\00:19:59.29 I was at a place one time, and I was eating with some friends, 00:19:59.32\00:20:03.17 and the phone rang in the background... 00:20:03.20\00:20:05.30 it wasn't really going to bother me... the phone ringing 00:20:05.33\00:20:08.37 But then the person answered and said, "Hey Don, 00:20:08.40\00:20:10.62 it's, we'll call him, Joe is on the phone. " 00:20:10.65\00:20:13.09 As soon as the name "Joe" was mentioned, 00:20:13.12\00:20:15.70 my appetite went, my stomach knotted up, 00:20:15.73\00:20:18.40 and I felt sick to my stomach because I wasn't 00:20:18.41\00:20:20.85 getting along too well with Joe. 00:20:20.88\00:20:22.60 That was emotions. 00:20:22.63\00:20:24.92 Some time later, we were at a meeting. 00:20:24.95\00:20:28.67 Sometimes we used to meet together at Uchee Pines 00:20:28.70\00:20:30.82 we'd have all night prayer meetings, 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.65 and there was another young man at Uchee Pines 00:20:32.68\00:20:35.72 who stood up... This was LATE at night that night 00:20:35.75\00:20:38.44 and he turned around... He was sort of in the 00:20:38.47\00:20:41.51 front of where we all were. 00:20:41.55\00:20:42.69 There was about 11 of us there... 00:20:42.72\00:20:45.11 I was in the back of where we were. 00:20:45.14\00:20:46.46 And he said, "I'd like us to pray tonight. 00:20:46.49\00:20:48.71 There's someone in this campus I just can't stand 00:20:48.74\00:20:52.95 and I'd like to pray that I'd be able tolerate him. " 00:20:52.98\00:20:55.95 Well, one of the men said, "Why do you want to 00:20:55.98\00:20:57.48 tolerate him? Why don't you pray that you could LOVE him?" 00:20:57.51\00:20:59.06 And he says, "Not even possible, if we could just pray that I 00:20:59.09\00:21:03.02 could tolerate him, that would be fine. " 00:21:03.05\00:21:04.53 And so, we got down... We all prayed sincerely 00:21:04.57\00:21:09.01 that the man would be able to love this other person. 00:21:09.04\00:21:12.15 And when we got done praying, we all got up 00:21:12.18\00:21:16.54 from our knees and sat and this man stood up 00:21:16.57\00:21:19.11 and says, "I can't believe it, GOD HAS DONE IT." 00:21:19.14\00:21:23.04 "He's given me love. " 00:21:23.05\00:21:24.60 And he walked out from the pew. 00:21:24.63\00:21:26.48 He walked up the aisle, to the back of the chapel, 00:21:26.51\00:21:29.20 turned around, walked up behind me, 00:21:29.23\00:21:31.72 placed his hands on my shoulders, and says, 00:21:31.75\00:21:34.10 "I LOVE HIM NOW!" 00:21:34.11\00:21:36.11 I didn't even know he didn't like me. 00:21:36.14\00:21:38.52 He and I right now are the BEST of friends! 00:21:38.55\00:21:43.21 He told me, later on, that when I would come into the 00:21:43.24\00:21:45.84 cafeteria, he would lose his appetite. 00:21:45.87\00:21:48.13 We had NEVER even TALKED, but sometimes emotions, 00:21:48.16\00:21:51.85 sometimes Satan likes to drive wedges between people. 00:21:51.88\00:21:54.76 Yes, loneliness can make you sometimes a little bit upset... 00:21:54.79\00:21:57.75 And perhaps being in danger, or fear 00:21:57.78\00:22:01.98 that can cause you some upset. 00:22:02.01\00:22:03.58 You see, what happens... As a matter of fact, 00:22:03.62\00:22:05.08 Pavlov did some interesting studies. 00:22:05.11\00:22:07.18 He would observe the stomachs. 00:22:07.21\00:22:09.80 As a matter of fact, they did another study with human beings. 00:22:09.81\00:22:11.62 Let's go away from the dogs. 00:22:11.65\00:22:12.68 Let's go to human beings. 00:22:12.72\00:22:13.71 A man had received an injury to his stomach. 00:22:13.74\00:22:17.57 And unable to heal, they put a scope from the outside 00:22:17.60\00:22:22.44 right into the stomach, so the doctor could actually 00:22:22.47\00:22:24.92 observe... this was many, many years ago 00:22:24.95\00:22:26.67 ...could actually observe right into the stomach 00:22:26.70\00:22:29.48 And normally, the stomach was a nice pink substance 00:22:29.51\00:22:34.71 and just really nice. 00:22:34.72\00:22:35.86 But he said when the man would get sometimes a little bit 00:22:35.89\00:22:37.92 irritated, it would start to get red. 00:22:37.95\00:22:39.93 But one time, the man was EXTREMELY upset... EXTREMELY! 00:22:39.94\00:22:44.46 The man looked in there, and the stomach was blood-red 00:22:44.49\00:22:48.24 and drops of blood were appearing 00:22:48.27\00:22:50.75 on the surface of the stomach. 00:22:50.79\00:22:52.26 Our emotions have a huge effect on how we are. 00:22:52.30\00:22:55.78 I remember, it must have been November 5, 1979, 00:22:55.81\00:23:00.94 I was preparing my favorite breakfast! 00:23:00.97\00:23:03.98 I wasn't really into this health reform back then, 00:23:04.01\00:23:06.07 so I was eating some pretty strange things that morning. 00:23:06.10\00:23:08.14 It was my FAVORITE breakfast! 00:23:08.17\00:23:10.14 A half a dozen soft-boiled eggs, about a quarter of a loaf 00:23:10.17\00:23:13.41 of bread, torn up with a big hunk of butter in there. 00:23:13.44\00:23:15.82 That was my favorite breakfast. 00:23:15.85\00:23:17.24 So I had the eggs right at 3 minutes, 00:23:17.27\00:23:19.52 I was getting ready to go through the breaking them 00:23:19.55\00:23:21.79 open and dumping them in and all that slimy stuff, 00:23:21.80\00:23:23.99 and the phone rings... 00:23:24.02\00:23:25.06 And it's my mother, and she told me at that point 00:23:25.09\00:23:27.68 that my father had just died. 00:23:27.71\00:23:29.39 And immediately, my stomach was in knots, 00:23:29.42\00:23:32.86 I took the whole thing and dumped it in the garbage can 00:23:32.89\00:23:35.46 I had no appetite whatsoever. 00:23:35.49\00:23:37.55 I was sick to my stomach. 00:23:37.58\00:23:38.96 Our emotions have a profound effect. 00:23:38.99\00:23:41.27 We're told we should not eat when we are emotionally upset... 00:23:41.30\00:23:43.82 And I would REALLY recommend that. 00:23:43.85\00:23:46.00 We should be calm. 00:23:46.03\00:23:47.15 Our mealtime should be the happiest time of the day. 00:23:47.18\00:23:49.82 And so all the tensions that we have sometimes around our 00:23:49.85\00:23:53.91 tables... are causing chronic upset 00:23:53.94\00:23:56.87 stomachs, and we don't need that. 00:23:56.91\00:23:58.80 We need to digest this food, Dr. Thrash... 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.54 that's how we're going to live. 00:24:00.57\00:24:01.70 Yes, our food needs a good calm atmosphere. 00:24:01.73\00:24:05.37 So if you're tired, or overwrought, 00:24:05.38\00:24:07.24 when you start into a meal, take a little time 00:24:07.27\00:24:10.91 and rest and relax, and pray to the Lord 00:24:10.94\00:24:13.25 that your tensions will vanish. 00:24:13.28\00:24:15.76 Another thing that can cause the intestinal tract to react 00:24:15.79\00:24:20.43 is that of motion. 00:24:20.46\00:24:22.12 Motion can be one that one is actually experiencing, 00:24:22.15\00:24:26.63 or the motion can be completely outside of one and affecting 00:24:26.66\00:24:30.60 one not at all, except the eyes. 00:24:30.63\00:24:32.61 One time, I was in a foreign country with my granddaughter 00:24:32.62\00:24:37.47 who has always had motion sickness. 00:24:37.50\00:24:39.86 We have been treating her motion sickness since she was 00:24:39.89\00:24:42.88 quite a tiny infant. 00:24:42.91\00:24:45.33 I don't usually have motion sickness, and I was very 00:24:45.34\00:24:48.65 pleased that I didn't. 00:24:48.68\00:24:50.35 And I was in charge of a little group who were going to 00:24:50.36\00:24:55.20 a place where we were going to present a health program. 00:24:55.23\00:24:57.62 And I felt that I needed to be the very paragon of virtue 00:24:57.65\00:25:02.25 in this matter, and not get motion-sick, 00:25:02.28\00:25:05.36 but the road was a very winding one... 00:25:05.39\00:25:07.70 It was up and down. 00:25:07.73\00:25:08.73 It was a mountainous road, so we were doing this kind of 00:25:08.74\00:25:11.00 thing, and it wasn't long before I began to feel not-too-good. 00:25:11.03\00:25:15.83 So I said to my granddaughter who was sitting next to me... 00:25:15.86\00:25:19.28 How do you feel? Are you all right? 00:25:19.31\00:25:22.25 Are you handling this road all right? 00:25:22.28\00:25:23.66 She said... OH YES! I'm doing fine! 00:25:23.69\00:25:25.07 I was hoping that she would say to the driver... 00:25:25.10\00:25:28.08 "No, we need to stop. " 00:25:28.11\00:25:29.10 But, she didn't, so I waited about 10 minutes, 00:25:29.13\00:25:31.17 and I said, again, "How are you feeling?" 00:25:31.20\00:25:34.36 Again, she said, "I'm doing fine. " 00:25:34.39\00:25:36.48 I was doing WORSE. 00:25:36.49\00:25:38.54 So it wasn't but just about another 10 minutes 00:25:38.57\00:25:41.81 when, AGAIN, I said, "How are you feeling?" 00:25:41.84\00:25:44.48 "Do you feel all right?" 00:25:44.51\00:25:46.29 Again, she didn't come through for me. 00:25:46.32\00:25:49.24 She said, "I feel FINE." 00:25:49.27\00:25:51.33 I said, "Well, I don't. " So I reached over and 00:25:51.36\00:25:54.38 tapped the driver on the shoulder and I said, 00:25:54.41\00:25:56.32 "You need to stop... and right away!" 00:25:56.35\00:25:58.71 So, I was quite sick. 00:25:58.74\00:26:01.22 I could hardly wait for him to stop, 00:26:01.23\00:26:02.97 but once he stopped, I was very happy that we were not 00:26:03.00\00:26:06.58 still in the car. 00:26:06.61\00:26:07.86 Now, are there things that you can do for motion sickness 00:26:07.89\00:26:11.34 that will make you able to tolerate this kind of motionness 00:26:11.37\00:26:14.45 ...up and down, around and about, and the answer is... Yes. 00:26:14.48\00:26:18.30 I don't know why, occasionally, a person who is not usually 00:26:18.33\00:26:23.59 motion sick, will become motion sick under certain circumstances 00:26:23.62\00:26:27.81 Maybe it's the condition of the stomach before 00:26:27.84\00:26:31.59 you start on the trip. 00:26:31.62\00:26:32.66 Whatever it is, occasionally, people will have a problem. 00:26:32.70\00:26:36.05 If you have to travel a lot, and you're a passenger in a car, 00:26:36.08\00:26:39.51 you're more likely to get sick, as a passenger, 00:26:39.54\00:26:41.89 than as the driver. 00:26:41.92\00:26:43.03 Always take with you, a little bottle of mint oil. 00:26:43.06\00:26:47.99 You can buy this from a drug store. 00:26:48.02\00:26:50.18 You can also buy it from a grocery store 00:26:50.21\00:26:52.95 in the spice counter. 00:26:52.96\00:26:54.48 And, when you begin to feel this nausea, 00:26:54.51\00:26:58.28 don't wait until you have a full-blown case, 00:26:58.31\00:27:01.06 simply take the top off and tip the bottle, 00:27:01.09\00:27:04.13 and wet the end of your finger and you can just lick that off 00:27:04.16\00:27:08.94 And often that's ALL that's required to make it so that 00:27:08.97\00:27:12.06 your motion sickness just goes away very miraculously. 00:27:12.09\00:27:17.59 Ginger is also good for that. 00:27:17.62\00:27:19.60 You can buy the tablets, or the lozenges. 00:27:19.63\00:27:21.77 Those are very good for motion sickness. 00:27:21.80\00:27:25.38 Now with motion sickness, you can expect that it may 00:27:25.41\00:27:29.46 last for only a few minutes, but with some people 00:27:29.49\00:27:32.90 it will last most of the day. 00:27:32.93\00:27:34.45 Now, while the discussion of these simple things is not 00:27:34.48\00:27:40.23 that kind of thing that's going to make you so knowledgeable 00:27:40.26\00:27:43.02 that you can hang out a shingle, 00:27:43.05\00:27:44.59 these things should be able to help you live much more 00:27:44.62\00:27:47.74 comfortably in the world, and to be a real minister 00:27:47.77\00:27:52.18 to those who live in your home, 00:27:52.21\00:27:54.61 and in your close environment. 00:27:54.65\00:27:57.01 May God richly bless you. 00:27:57.05\00:27:58.08
