Now I realize I can't make you a physician in one short program 00:00:01.98\00:00:07.75 But I can tell you a lot of things that can help you 00:00:07.78\00:00:11.72 with non-serious illnesses that afflict the vast majority of 00:00:11.75\00:00:16.84 mankind at one time or other. 00:00:16.87\00:00:18.58 So, I hope you'll stay with us and we'll discuss some of these 00:00:18.61\00:00:21.73 on this program. 00:00:21.76\00:00:22.73 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:43.72\00:00:45.77 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:45.80\00:00:49.56 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:49.59\00:00:55.37 Most people, if you ask them about common illnesses, 00:00:55.40\00:01:00.05 they will immediately tell you that a headache 00:01:00.08\00:01:04.08 is probably the commonest illness. 00:01:04.11\00:01:05.99 And it is one of the very common ones... 00:01:06.02\00:01:07.70 It's probably not THE most common one, 00:01:07.73\00:01:09.61 but it's common enough that any understanding 00:01:09.64\00:01:13.77 of simple remedies and illnesses and how you deal with 00:01:13.80\00:01:16.90 these at home should be discussed. 00:01:16.93\00:01:19.49 So I'd like to start talking with you about 00:01:19.52\00:01:21.58 headaches with the simple recurring headaches 00:01:21.61\00:01:25.61 that a lot of people get. 00:01:25.62\00:01:27.30 They occur today... They were there yesterday... 00:01:27.33\00:01:30.67 They had a headache or 2 the day before... 00:01:30.70\00:01:33.35 And so the headache can be something that keeps on 00:01:33.38\00:01:36.54 coming, and they've had it for years. 00:01:36.57\00:01:39.60 Now #1... If you've had a headache for years, 00:01:39.63\00:01:43.94 it probably is due to some kind of allergy, 00:01:43.97\00:01:47.48 ...or some kind of skeletal problem. 00:01:47.51\00:01:49.67 That skeletal problem may be something with your neck. 00:01:49.70\00:01:52.61 It may be poor neck posture. 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.00 You should learn to have the best neck posture possible 00:01:55.03\00:01:59.69 and, essentially that means having the cheekbone 00:01:59.72\00:02:03.80 right over the collarbone. 00:02:03.83\00:02:05.42 Now, putting the cheekbone over the collarbone 00:02:05.45\00:02:08.77 isn't difficult, but it may be almost impossible 00:02:08.80\00:02:13.03 for you to tell yourself whether your cheekbone 00:02:13.06\00:02:16.09 is right over your collarbone. 00:02:16.12\00:02:17.50 So how do you tell? 00:02:17.51\00:02:19.50 You have someone stand to your side, 00:02:19.51\00:02:22.06 and just tell you when you have achieved that... 00:02:22.09\00:02:24.27 Then try to visualize in your mind 00:02:24.30\00:02:26.76 just what kind of muscles are needed to keep that 00:02:26.79\00:02:31.09 just in that way and do that. 00:02:31.12\00:02:33.25 That is called the "neutral position of the head. " 00:02:33.28\00:02:37.00 And for a lot of people who have headaches because of 00:02:37.03\00:02:40.71 neck problems, that will be sufficient to handle 00:02:40.74\00:02:44.80 that little problem. 00:02:44.83\00:02:46.28 Now, the next probably most common cause... 00:02:46.31\00:02:50.00 In fact, it may be even the first most common cause 00:02:50.03\00:02:52.40 of recurring headaches, is a sensitivity to something. 00:02:52.43\00:02:56.30 Often that is something in the environment. 00:02:56.33\00:02:58.72 It may be something in your house... 00:02:58.75\00:03:00.19 House dust, or something that comes off the drapes, 00:03:00.22\00:03:05.09 or that comes off the walls, or from masonry in your home. 00:03:05.12\00:03:10.35 Whatever it is, it's something that you're being exposed to 00:03:10.38\00:03:15.02 all the time, and with that exposure comes a sensitivity 00:03:15.05\00:03:18.81 that eventually gives you a headache. 00:03:18.84\00:03:20.98 Now, headaches can be intense, or they can be quite mild. 00:03:21.01\00:03:25.62 They can be associated with a sinusitis, or an inflammation 00:03:25.65\00:03:29.60 of the sinuses which are behind the forehead and 00:03:29.63\00:03:33.57 behind the cheekbones... 00:03:33.58\00:03:35.07 Those are important sinuses that can be inflamed 00:03:35.10\00:03:40.86 to make you have a headache. 00:03:40.89\00:03:41.92 Sinusitis is, unless you prove that it's due to something else, 00:03:41.93\00:03:48.25 you should always consider that it's due to a food sensitivity. 00:03:48.28\00:03:51.82 It may be also associated with some environmental thing 00:03:51.85\00:03:56.65 such as pollens, or fumes that come into your home 00:03:56.68\00:04:01.89 from a nearby industry... can be associated with those, 00:04:01.92\00:04:05.56 but most of the time, it's food. 00:04:05.59\00:04:07.96 That means that you can control that by simply finding 00:04:07.99\00:04:11.88 the food to which you're sensitive and removing that 00:04:11.89\00:04:15.64 from your diet. 00:04:15.67\00:04:16.69 Now how do you determine that? 00:04:16.72\00:04:19.79 Get a list of foods that most people are sensitive to 00:04:19.82\00:04:23.01 in the United States, or whatever country you live in 00:04:23.02\00:04:27.26 ...the diet is different there than in other parts of the world 00:04:27.29\00:04:31.41 and so wherever you are, get that list of foods 00:04:31.44\00:04:34.69 from an allergist, or from a library, 00:04:34.72\00:04:39.21 and simply remove those foods from your diet. 00:04:39.22\00:04:42.91 You may think... "Well, if I remove tomatoes, 00:04:42.94\00:04:46.68 and milk, and cheese, and coffee, and citrus fruits, 00:04:46.71\00:04:51.60 and apples, bananas, legumes, nuts... 00:04:51.63\00:04:54.87 If I remove all those... that is my entire diet. 00:04:54.90\00:04:58.11 What will I eat, if I don't eat those things? 00:04:58.14\00:05:00.66 Well, the interesting thing is that we become sensitive 00:05:00.69\00:05:05.36 to those foods that we have a repeated exposure to, 00:05:05.39\00:05:09.05 especially those things that we eat every day. 00:05:09.06\00:05:11.71 So, go to the market, look at those foods that are 00:05:11.74\00:05:15.59 available... buy those things that you don't customarily eat 00:05:15.62\00:05:20.22 and make your menus from that. 00:05:20.25\00:05:23.26 Now if you find that after you have eliminated all that 00:05:23.27\00:05:28.35 group of foods that you have been eating, customarily, 00:05:28.38\00:05:31.50 day by day, and your headache has gone away, 00:05:31.53\00:05:34.91 then you know that you have hit pay dirt. 00:05:34.94\00:05:37.11 So then, you can start adding back one food at a time 00:05:37.14\00:05:41.66 every 5 to 7 days until your headache returns... 00:05:41.69\00:05:45.10 And once it does, then you know that thing you added last 00:05:45.13\00:05:48.60 is one of those things causing your headaches. 00:05:48.63\00:05:51.11 Now I talked with you about simple sinus headaches, 00:05:51.14\00:05:54.60 or sensitivity headaches, or recurring headaches... 00:05:54.63\00:05:57.58 These are very common, and a lot of people have them. 00:05:57.61\00:06:00.66 But there is another kind of headache called "migraine" 00:06:00.67\00:06:03.66 And, of course, everyone is familiar with that, 00:06:03.69\00:06:05.51 and Dr. Don Miller is going to talk with you about 00:06:05.54\00:06:08.95 migraines at this time. 00:06:08.98\00:06:10.74 Dr. Thrash, I don't know what you're talking about... 00:06:10.77\00:06:13.91 Headaches... you don't get headaches? 00:06:13.94\00:06:16.07 I'm one of the lucky ones! 00:06:16.10\00:06:17.70 Not lucky, I'm blessed. 00:06:17.73\00:06:19.40 I don't get headaches. 00:06:19.43\00:06:20.91 But, I've known people who are completely debilitated 00:06:20.94\00:06:24.02 by headaches. 00:06:24.05\00:06:25.86 Migraine, as Dr. Thrash has mentioned, 00:06:25.89\00:06:27.90 comes from a Greek word, "hemicrania," 00:06:27.93\00:06:31.59 which means "half a head" 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.34 Sometimes you feel like your whole head wants to be taken off 00:06:33.37\00:06:35.78 But usually a migraine headache is in one-half of your head. 00:06:35.81\00:06:39.84 Sometimes, it's the front half... either the forehead, 00:06:40.47\00:06:43.35 the temples, the eyes, the jaw area in extremely intense pain. 00:06:43.38\00:06:50.26 Now, there are other types of headaches 00:06:50.29\00:06:52.27 that you might get confused with, 00:06:52.28\00:06:53.72 but you look at the duration, and the other symptoms 00:06:53.75\00:06:57.11 that come with that type of a headache. 00:06:57.14\00:06:59.54 There's a tension headache... usually it lasts from 00:06:59.55\00:07:01.64 4 to 24 hours... Not such a severe pain, 00:07:01.67\00:07:05.02 and it's just caused by tension. 00:07:05.05\00:07:06.85 There is a terrible headache called a "cluster headache" 00:07:06.88\00:07:10.19 This one can last between 60 and 90 minutes 00:07:10.22\00:07:13.75 but it will come over and over... 00:07:13.76\00:07:16.40 It comes in clusters and this might last for years. 00:07:16.43\00:07:19.16 They say that this is probably the worse headache that there is 00:07:19.19\00:07:22.52 But the migraine headache will last from 4 to 72 hours, 00:07:22.55\00:07:27.71 and it will be a severe pain but often with other 00:07:27.74\00:07:31.60 types of symptoms. 00:07:31.63\00:07:32.81 There will be, often, nausea because the pain is so bad 00:07:32.84\00:07:36.61 it causes a person to become nauseous. 00:07:36.64\00:07:38.98 There's also sometimes watery eyes or running nose. 00:07:39.01\00:07:43.72 And these are things that when you have those 00:07:43.75\00:07:46.06 along with the headache, you figure... 00:07:46.09\00:07:47.58 "I have a migraine headache. " 00:07:47.61\00:07:50.15 If you have a migraine headache, 00:07:50.18\00:07:52.42 you know you have migraine headaches. 00:07:52.45\00:07:54.07 Now Dr. Thrash has mentioned the sensitivity to the foods 00:07:54.10\00:07:58.18 and one of the main causes of migraine headaches 00:07:58.21\00:08:01.69 is that very thing... sensitivity to foods. 00:08:01.72\00:08:04.18 And, I'll just mention a few of the major foods 00:08:04.21\00:08:07.38 that will be extremely easy... 00:08:07.41\00:08:09.67 I say that because I'm not addicted to these things, 00:08:09.68\00:08:12.53 extremely easy to get rid of out of your diet. 00:08:12.56\00:08:15.13 One is, coffee, or the cola beverages, 00:08:15.16\00:08:18.74 or the caffeine beverages. 00:08:18.75\00:08:20.10 These things will produce migraine headaches. 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.97 Another one is cheese. 00:08:23.00\00:08:25.43 Cheese has a particular property that will 00:08:25.46\00:08:28.46 precipitate a migraine headache. 00:08:28.49\00:08:30.16 Another one is chocolate. 00:08:30.19\00:08:32.29 Now I've talked about addictive... 00:08:32.32\00:08:33.94 Chocolate is an addictive substance... 00:08:33.95\00:08:36.87 So when people eat chocolate, 00:08:36.90\00:08:38.66 they've got to have their chocolate. 00:08:38.69\00:08:40.13 And this gets so bad, that a person, even though 00:08:40.17\00:08:43.97 a meal with cheese, or chocolate will bring on 00:08:44.00\00:08:48.22 a migraine headache, they'll continue to use 00:08:48.25\00:08:50.79 those offending items, and then take some type of a 00:08:50.80\00:08:54.47 medication to, hopefully, get rid of the headache. 00:08:54.50\00:08:57.46 ...Not a good thing to do. 00:08:57.49\00:08:59.04 Another thing that can cause a migraine headache 00:08:59.07\00:09:01.49 is low blood sugar... 00:09:01.52\00:09:03.13 And if a person wakes up in the morning with a headache, 00:09:03.16\00:09:06.27 what they should do right away, is drink some 00:09:06.30\00:09:08.83 type of fruit juice. 00:09:08.86\00:09:10.03 Get a little bit more glucose into the blood, 00:09:10.06\00:09:14.21 raise the blood sugar. 00:09:14.24\00:09:15.56 If the headache goes away, you realize your problem is 00:09:15.59\00:09:18.79 low blood sugar. 00:09:18.82\00:09:20.45 People are sometimes photosensitive. 00:09:20.48\00:09:23.35 Lights! They come out into the bright lights, 00:09:23.38\00:09:25.85 and that can precipitate a migraine headache. 00:09:25.88\00:09:28.61 A person who is apt to get that type of a headache 00:09:28.64\00:09:32.29 should wear a shaded brow, sunglasses... 00:09:32.30\00:09:36.40 Stay in the shade, especially when the sun is in its zenith 00:09:36.43\00:09:39.60 in the brightest time of the day. 00:09:39.63\00:09:41.31 Stay out of the sunshine. 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.82 A person who's retaining too much water 00:09:42.83\00:09:46.29 can have a migraine headache. 00:09:46.32\00:09:48.13 You have so much interstitial pressure 00:09:48.16\00:09:50.18 that it can cause the migraine headache... 00:09:50.19\00:09:51.90 And so what you want to do there... is 00:09:51.91\00:09:53.48 take some type of... and I would recommend, 00:09:53.51\00:09:55.45 natural diuretics... Something as simple as watermelon. 00:09:55.48\00:09:59.55 In the summertime, eat watermelon. 00:09:59.58\00:10:01.36 When you're eating the watermelon... 00:10:01.39\00:10:03.17 My grandmother once told me, the reason why 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.82 watermelons had so many seeds, is because 00:10:04.85\00:10:07.67 God didn't want you to eat it too fast. 00:10:07.70\00:10:10.30 But it's also there, because he wanted us to have some 00:10:10.33\00:10:12.94 natural diuretics. 00:10:12.95\00:10:14.24 So you save all your summer watermelon seeds, 00:10:14.27\00:10:16.70 dry them, and then in the wintertime, 00:10:16.73\00:10:19.47 you can grind them up and make watermelon seed tea 00:10:19.48\00:10:22.60 an excellent type of a diuretic. 00:10:22.63\00:10:25.44 You can also use corn silk tea. 00:10:25.47\00:10:27.28 So in the summertime, when you're out there 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.23 shucking your corn, you eat the delicious corn, 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.98 which is also a diuretic, 00:10:32.01\00:10:33.63 but you take all that silk, and you dry it... 00:10:33.66\00:10:36.70 Pulverize it, put it in a jar, 00:10:36.71\00:10:39.17 and save that for your wintertime diuretic. 00:10:39.20\00:10:42.56 A nice, natural diuretic. 00:10:42.59\00:10:44.18 And so, too much water can cause you to diereses. 00:10:44.21\00:10:47.09 Now, an important point, when you are going to get 00:10:47.12\00:10:53.85 a migraine headache, you will have what's called an "aura" 00:10:53.88\00:10:57.16 Sort of like a person with epilepsy, 00:10:57.19\00:10:59.92 the first stage is aura. 00:10:59.95\00:11:01.84 When you feel that aura, usually it's about a day before, 00:11:01.87\00:11:05.29 and there are a few things that will happen 00:11:05.32\00:11:06.69 in a person's experience. 00:11:06.72\00:11:07.90 #1. They become a little bit more moody. 00:11:07.93\00:11:10.25 Now some people are moody all the time... 00:11:10.28\00:11:11.94 But when they know they're having migraine headaches, 00:11:11.95\00:11:14.66 and they know that every time I'm going to get a migraine 00:11:14.69\00:11:17.44 headache, I get moody the day before... 00:11:17.47\00:11:19.67 Or, your 5 senses become a little bit more extreme, 00:11:19.70\00:11:24.10 or there are some strange actions in your 5 senses. 00:11:24.13\00:11:28.30 Just before the migraine comes on, 00:11:28.33\00:11:31.64 it could be some type of flashes in the eyes, 00:11:31.67\00:11:34.58 in the mind, some sparkling lights. 00:11:34.61\00:11:37.15 When you have the aura, that's the time 00:11:37.18\00:11:40.61 to start fighting that headache... 00:11:40.64\00:11:42.08 Don't wait until you have the headache. 00:11:42.11\00:11:43.77 What I would recommend, you feel that aura coming on... 00:11:43.78\00:11:46.64 intense outdoor exercise! 00:11:46.67\00:11:49.56 Now if you're photosensitive, go ahead and put your hat on, 00:11:49.59\00:11:52.36 put your shades on. 00:11:52.39\00:11:53.52 Get outside, or anywhere you can, and do intense exercise 00:11:53.55\00:11:58.65 ...That itself might waylay the onset of your migraine headache. 00:11:58.68\00:12:03.67 There are some other things you can do 00:12:03.70\00:12:05.32 once the headache has arrived. 00:12:05.35\00:12:07.14 As soon as it's there, or even as you feel it just coming on, 00:12:07.17\00:12:11.24 ...many people wait until something is full-blown 00:12:11.27\00:12:13.66 before they start doing something about it. 00:12:13.69\00:12:15.92 I am thankful for auras. 00:12:15.95\00:12:18.46 We all have auras... Let's say if you're going to get a cold, 00:12:18.49\00:12:20.50 you all know when you're going to get a cold. 00:12:20.53\00:12:22.29 You feel that tickle in the throat... 00:12:22.32\00:12:24.05 that little headache over here... 00:12:24.08\00:12:25.34 You start fighting it right then. 00:12:25.37\00:12:27.14 SO... you've got that migraine coming on, 00:12:27.17\00:12:29.19 go to a dark room, lie down, put on an ice cap. 00:12:29.22\00:12:32.94 That could help. 00:12:32.97\00:12:34.67 You could also... and this has been around for about 120 years, 00:12:34.70\00:12:38.79 a hot enema at the onset of a migraine headache, 00:12:38.82\00:12:43.40 will help to shorten the duration of this 00:12:43.43\00:12:46.90 particular headache. 00:12:46.91\00:12:48.23 You could also put a cold compress behind the neck, 00:12:48.24\00:12:53.45 and a hot compress over the facial area. 00:12:53.48\00:12:56.69 This will help with the migraine headache. 00:12:56.72\00:12:59.26 So these are some very simple things. 00:12:59.29\00:13:01.00 But again, watch the diet, watch those food items. 00:13:01.03\00:13:04.44 We should all keep food diaries. 00:13:04.47\00:13:06.37 It's not just headaches that would be affected by 00:13:06.40\00:13:09.52 a food sensitivity. 00:13:09.55\00:13:11.08 It could be other types of allergies. 00:13:11.11\00:13:12.88 So, if you are prone to anything that comes in sort of a 00:13:12.91\00:13:18.40 sporadic basis, try to find out... 00:13:18.43\00:13:21.11 What is it that causing this problem? 00:13:21.14\00:13:23.51 I recommend you keep a food diary. 00:13:23.54\00:13:25.72 And you say, "Man, every time I eat potatoes... 00:13:25.75\00:13:29.61 I knew someone like this... every time she ate potatoes, 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.74 she got really tired. 00:13:31.77\00:13:33.79 Well potatoes, make her tired. 00:13:33.82\00:13:35.96 If those things that are going to cause you 00:13:35.97\00:13:38.89 to get a migraine headache, are in your dietary, 00:13:38.92\00:13:41.46 get rid of them forever. 00:13:41.49\00:13:43.28 So those are some simple things about migraines, Dr. Thrash. 00:13:43.29\00:13:46.36 Maybe they'll help somebody? 00:13:46.39\00:13:47.46 Those are very good things, too. 00:13:47.49\00:13:49.47 I especially like that hot enema. 00:13:49.50\00:13:52.17 That's a very good remedy for a migraine. 00:13:52.20\00:13:55.96 Now there are some VERY serious things that can cause 00:13:55.99\00:13:59.79 migraines, or can cause headaches, and one of 00:13:59.82\00:14:03.74 those is a stroke. 00:14:03.77\00:14:04.92 Sometimes a stroke can begin with a ruptured blood vessel. 00:14:04.95\00:14:10.34 And if it does, then the person may start getting a headache. 00:14:10.37\00:14:13.01 It can be explosive, as with the rupture of a berry aneurysm 00:14:13.59\00:14:18.78 Or, it can be very subtle and begin very subtly 00:14:18.81\00:14:22.74 with a little leakage from a capillary, 00:14:22.77\00:14:25.70 or from a little blood vessel that gets weak in the wall 00:14:25.73\00:14:30.27 and begins to leak. 00:14:30.30\00:14:32.20 If the headache mounts, 00:14:32.23\00:14:34.77 you've never had a headache like that before, 00:14:34.80\00:14:36.73 and it gets worse and worse, and finally is blinding, 00:14:36.76\00:14:40.78 and you're in the age group for a stroke, 00:14:40.81\00:14:44.47 and you may have some other precipitating factors that 00:14:44.50\00:14:48.63 make you think you might have had a stroke. 00:14:48.66\00:14:50.54 If so, that may be the cause of a 00:14:50.57\00:14:54.05 once-in-a-lifetime type of stroke. 00:14:54.08\00:14:56.55 This is not the recurring headache that everybody 00:14:56.59\00:14:59.40 has had for years, or decades 00:14:59.43\00:15:02.07 they've continued to experience those. 00:15:02.10\00:15:04.93 This is a sudden and intense... 00:15:04.96\00:15:07.77 the onset may be a little subtle 00:15:07.80\00:15:11.01 But the suddenness of it, 00:15:11.04\00:15:13.35 and the unexpectedness of it, 00:15:13.38\00:15:15.41 is that that can identify a headache as being stroke origin. 00:15:15.44\00:15:21.72 Now another thing that can cause a headache, 00:15:21.75\00:15:24.26 that's new, not one that's been going on for years, 00:15:24.29\00:15:28.19 is a cancer inside the head, or some kind of tumor. 00:15:28.22\00:15:31.93 It may be a benign tumor inside the head, 00:15:31.96\00:15:34.60 but as it expands, then it can cause the head not to have 00:15:34.63\00:15:39.24 enough room for all of its organ, 00:15:39.27\00:15:41.35 and that then makes pressure on very sensitive tissues 00:15:41.38\00:15:45.89 And that can cause a serious headache. 00:15:45.92\00:15:49.29 If your headaches have had recent onset, 00:15:49.32\00:15:52.70 and you're unaware of anything that could have precipitated it, 00:15:52.73\00:15:57.42 then, of course, you should think along those lines. 00:15:57.45\00:16:00.14 Now, some of the headaches that we have talked about, 00:16:00.17\00:16:03.56 have not been common, have not been simple, 00:16:03.59\00:16:05.61 nor nonserious, but have been serious headaches 00:16:05.64\00:16:09.28 But now, we want to go to something that's very common 00:16:09.31\00:16:12.39 not serious at all USUALLY. 00:16:12.42\00:16:15.36 And that's the common cold. 00:16:15.39\00:16:17.04 Occasionally, it can be serious. 00:16:17.07\00:16:19.05 It can leave serious sequelae, 00:16:19.08\00:16:21.40 but most of the time, it's not of much importance, 00:16:21.43\00:16:25.87 except the inconvenience of of having it. 00:16:25.90\00:16:28.67 And, Dr. Don Miller, is going to talk with you about colds. 00:16:28.70\00:16:31.84 Now I'm going to say something rather radical, 00:16:31.87\00:16:34.58 "A cold is a cure for a prediseased condition. " 00:16:34.61\00:16:39.08 Basically, we get colds normally because we are rundown. 00:16:39.11\00:16:44.86 We allow ourselves to be rundown. 00:16:44.89\00:16:46.27 We're living in the 21st century now, 00:16:46.30\00:16:48.62 and we're so busy with all these different things, 00:16:48.65\00:16:51.15 we don't get our rest, we don't get our exercise, 00:16:51.18\00:16:54.61 we don't drink our water, we don't eat the right foods 00:16:54.64\00:16:56.76 We get ourselves rundown, and the body says, 00:16:56.79\00:16:59.51 "Hey, we gotta make this person slow down, 00:16:59.54\00:17:01.91 so this is what we'll do... 00:17:01.94\00:17:03.21 We're going to sit there and turn on the nose... 00:17:03.22\00:17:05.47 we're going to turn on the eyes, 00:17:05.50\00:17:06.53 We're going to turn on all these different things 00:17:06.56\00:17:08.41 and make this person feel like they just can't move anymore. " 00:17:08.42\00:17:11.54 They're going to lay down, and the body is going to 00:17:11.57\00:17:13.74 catch up with where they are. 00:17:13.77\00:17:15.02 So again, a cold is just a warning that your body 00:17:15.05\00:17:19.49 is just going into a position where you don't want it to be 00:17:19.52\00:17:23.58 And again, I've already talked about the aura 00:17:23.61\00:17:26.51 When you first feel the cold coming on, 00:17:26.54\00:17:29.22 although a cold will come on extremely quickly. 00:17:29.25\00:17:31.31 The body says, "That's it, we're going to 00:17:31.34\00:17:34.35 make this person stop this thing. " 00:17:34.38\00:17:36.03 But if you feel that first inkling, 00:17:36.06\00:17:39.28 that's when you got to sit there and say, 00:17:39.31\00:17:40.68 "I've got to rest. " 00:17:40.69\00:17:42.19 A number of years ago, I was giving a lecture, 00:17:42.22\00:17:45.44 and I was talking about certain herbal preparations 00:17:45.47\00:17:48.19 which are good for colds and the flu, and whatever else 00:17:48.22\00:17:52.43 And I was also talking about the laws of health. 00:17:52.46\00:17:54.79 So I gave the talk about the laws of health, 00:17:54.82\00:17:56.97 and then I gave the talk about the herbs, 00:17:57.00\00:17:58.89 and I had recommended a certain herbal preparation 00:17:58.92\00:18:02.22 make it into a tea if you feel a cold coming on, 00:18:02.25\00:18:04.99 or have a cold. 00:18:05.02\00:18:06.02 A few months later, I was giving this lecture in another state 00:18:06.05\00:18:09.27 and at the end of the lecture... it was the same lecture 00:18:09.30\00:18:12.08 A woman raised her hand and she said, 00:18:12.11\00:18:13.84 "You know I was in your audience the last time you 00:18:13.87\00:18:15.69 gave this lecture over there in the other state, 00:18:15.72\00:18:17.39 and you talked about these things, 00:18:17.42\00:18:19.99 and I felt a cold coming on, and I drank your tea 00:18:20.02\00:18:22.10 and it DIDN'T work. " 00:18:22.13\00:18:23.33 And I thought, "Just who I need in my audience... this lady. " 00:18:23.36\00:18:25.78 But then the Lord said, "Well, ask her a few questions. " 00:18:26.66\00:18:29.63 And I said, "Well ma'am, are you drinking your water?" 00:18:29.66\00:18:32.95 "I don't like water. " "Are you eating the right food?" 00:18:32.98\00:18:35.44 "Well, you know, it's Christmas time. " 00:18:35.47\00:18:36.94 It was around Christmastime of the year, 00:18:36.97\00:18:38.38 and it's all that good, sweetie stuff. 00:18:38.41\00:18:39.97 "How about getting your rest?" 00:18:40.00\00:18:41.55 You talk about rest this time of the year. 00:18:41.58\00:18:43.38 I'm so busy packing and shopping... all these things. 00:18:43.41\00:18:45.51 I went down all the laws of health... keeping none 00:18:45.54\00:18:48.63 and expected one cup of tea to take care of her problem. 00:18:48.66\00:18:51.93 It won't do it. 00:18:51.96\00:18:53.08 So what we want to do is be careful. 00:18:53.11\00:18:55.41 Now usually a cold is going to manifest itself 00:18:55.42\00:18:57.79 in the respiratory tract... a runny nose, 00:18:57.82\00:19:01.16 mucus production... certain things like this 00:19:01.19\00:19:07.18 Now, what's the difference between a cold and the flu? 00:19:07.21\00:19:10.67 It's interesting or is important to know 00:19:10.70\00:19:12.95 because the flu can be life-threatening as we all know. 00:19:12.98\00:19:15.68 The 1918-1919 flu epidemic killed 00:19:15.69\00:19:18.88 20 million people around the world... 00:19:18.92\00:19:21.08 And we're looking at, perhaps, one of these days 00:19:21.12\00:19:23.10 very soon, having another such occasion 00:19:23.13\00:19:26.13 because we're getting more and more different types of flu. 00:19:26.14\00:19:29.05 But what's the difference between a flu and a cold? 00:19:29.08\00:19:33.14 One, is the fever. 00:19:33.17\00:19:34.96 Normally, a flu has a fever... 00:19:34.99\00:19:37.30 A cold does not have a fever. 00:19:37.33\00:19:39.45 Achiness and body pain normally that's not so much in the flu, 00:19:39.48\00:19:47.26 but it's more common in the cold. 00:19:47.29\00:19:49.82 Headache... very common with the flu 00:19:49.85\00:19:54.84 Uncommon in the cold. 00:19:54.85\00:19:56.80 Fatigue... extreme fatigue in the flu 00:19:56.83\00:20:00.87 In the cold more of a moderation in those different things. 00:20:00.88\00:20:04.07 And in the flu, you're going to have a cough... 00:20:04.79\00:20:06.94 Usually not a cough in the cold. 00:20:06.97\00:20:09.46 And so we can take care of it that way 00:20:09.49\00:20:11.11 as finding out the difference between those 2 different things 00:20:11.14\00:20:13.59 What can you do about the cold? 00:20:13.60\00:20:16.88 Simple... #1 Rest 00:20:16.91\00:20:19.52 Drink plenty of fluids. 00:20:19.55\00:20:21.20 You've heard the old saying, "Feed a fever, starve a cold. " 00:20:21.23\00:20:25.32 Basically, during a cold, you should not be doing much eating, 00:20:25.35\00:20:28.27 but drinking lots of fluids. 00:20:28.30\00:20:29.72 Try to get yourself rehydrated. 00:20:29.75\00:20:31.97 Most of us, and I won't just say most of us, 00:20:32.00\00:20:35.18 most people in the world are chronically dehydrated. 00:20:35.21\00:20:38.28 We need to get ourselves rehydrated during that time. 00:20:38.31\00:20:41.12 We need to get plenty of rest during that time, 00:20:41.15\00:20:43.97 and take care of our bodies. 00:20:44.00\00:20:46.12 We can also do things like salt-water gargles. 00:20:46.15\00:20:50.62 I like doing, at the onset of a cold, 00:20:50.65\00:20:53.90 doing what's called a "nasal irrigation" 00:20:53.93\00:20:56.13 Basically taking some saline which is basically a pint of 00:20:56.16\00:21:00.18 water, usually warm water, about the body temperature 00:21:00.21\00:21:03.25 with a teaspoon of salt stirred in until it's dissolved 00:21:03.28\00:21:06.25 And then I basically just snort that into my 00:21:06.28\00:21:09.63 nasal passages... the whole pint of water. 00:21:09.66\00:21:12.42 It's not the most pleasant thing to do, 00:21:12.45\00:21:14.05 and certainly not probably a pleasant thing to see being done 00:21:14.08\00:21:17.23 But you do it in the privacy of your bathroom 00:21:17.24\00:21:19.66 and this will clean out your mucous linings of your 00:21:19.67\00:21:23.25 nasal passages, and it will give you better breathing 00:21:23.28\00:21:26.46 and this is a nice way. 00:21:26.49\00:21:27.69 As a matter of fact, it's a good thing to do. 00:21:27.70\00:21:29.99 I've heard this suggested, and I'd recommend it... 00:21:30.02\00:21:32.04 At the beginning of flu season before you even have 00:21:32.07\00:21:35.36 a cold, DO a nasal irrigation. 00:21:35.39\00:21:38.34 And do one, perhaps once a week. 00:21:38.35\00:21:40.40 I have another friend of mine who recommends what he does 00:21:40.43\00:21:44.33 when he feels a cold first coming on. 00:21:44.36\00:21:46.48 He'll squeeze a lemon, and then, I don't know how he does this 00:21:46.51\00:21:49.81 ...He'll put the lemon juice in his mouth, and lean back 00:21:49.84\00:21:53.00 and allow the lemon juice just to hang there on his throat. 00:21:53.03\00:21:56.08 Now when he has to swallow, he just leans forward, 00:21:56.89\00:21:58.85 swallows, not swallowing the lemon juice, and goes back again 00:21:58.88\00:22:02.42 allowing that to be back there about 20 minutes 00:22:02.45\00:22:05.42 Now that's a long time to have that lemon juice on the throat 00:22:05.45\00:22:07.99 But is very, very healing for the body. 00:22:08.69\00:22:11.69 You can be fighting those diseases. 00:22:11.72\00:22:13.53 You know, God has given us some special organs 00:22:13.56\00:22:16.66 in the body to watch over us and to protect us from 00:22:16.69\00:22:19.41 the onslaught of these diseases 00:22:19.44\00:22:21.77 And one is the things called the tonsils. 00:22:21.80\00:22:24.06 Now, my tonsils are probably in some pathologist's jar 00:22:24.09\00:22:27.25 and they've been there over 50 years. 00:22:27.28\00:22:29.30 They find that people who have had tonsillectomies 00:22:29.33\00:22:33.51 have more problems with the throat, 00:22:33.54\00:22:36.37 and with the esophagus. 00:22:36.38\00:22:38.39 And so we want to take care of the tonsils 00:22:38.42\00:22:40.32 We do that by the lemon juice, by salt water gargles, 00:22:40.35\00:22:45.33 by keeping the neck warm. 00:22:45.36\00:22:47.21 But more than anything else, when you start to 00:22:47.24\00:22:49.78 feel the cold coming on, you're run down, start resting 00:22:49.81\00:22:52.88 take care of yourself, and you probably won't have it very long 00:22:52.92\00:22:55.53 Usually the cold is going to be as long as it's going to be. 00:22:55.56\00:22:58.14 Don't go out and take an aspirin. 00:22:58.17\00:22:59.59 They have found that people who take aspirin 00:22:59.62\00:23:01.51 with colds, will have more severe complications, 00:23:01.54\00:23:06.63 have more complications, and a longer duration. 00:23:06.66\00:23:09.94 What they're going to benefit by is a momentary 00:23:09.97\00:23:14.03 and a short-term cessation of the symptom 00:23:14.06\00:23:17.19 they took the tablet for. 00:23:17.22\00:23:19.30 Stay away from the tablets, get back to nature. 00:23:19.34\00:23:21.88 Let God take care of you, 00:23:21.91\00:23:22.98 and He's an EXTREMELY good Doctor, Dr. Thrash. 00:23:23.01\00:23:25.80 Yes He is... He's the GREAT Physician, and the One that 00:23:25.83\00:23:28.86 we can count on to be our Physician when we're sick. 00:23:28.90\00:23:31.90 I'd like to just say a few words about the flu... 00:23:32.25\00:23:36.02 as Dr. Miller mentioned, it can be life-threatening 00:23:36.03\00:23:40.95 because of the fact that it's much more serious. 00:23:40.98\00:23:44.54 It's caused by a variety of viruses. 00:23:44.57\00:23:47.11 You'll hear of the Hone Kong flu, 00:23:47.14\00:23:49.90 and the Asian flu, and the swine flu. 00:23:49.93\00:23:51.68 There are a number of viruses... all of them distinct 00:23:51.72\00:23:54.41 But the treatment is essentially the same in the home 00:23:54.44\00:23:58.04 Those things that you would treat a cold with... 00:23:58.07\00:24:01.21 good diet, light diet, maybe even juices... 00:24:01.22\00:24:05.81 those can be used, and keeping the body warm, 00:24:05.84\00:24:09.35 making sure the temperature of the room is perfect 00:24:09.38\00:24:13.26 for the person... that can be helpful. 00:24:13.29\00:24:15.58 And then, hot baths... as long as the person is able to do them 00:24:15.61\00:24:19.76 Hot baths, and then when they're not, the use of fomentations 00:24:19.79\00:24:23.41 in the bed... that can be very helpful 00:24:23.44\00:24:26.17 with the hot foot bath, or without. 00:24:26.20\00:24:27.80 All of these types of remedies are discussed in our book 00:24:27.83\00:24:33.04 called, "Home Remedies. " 00:24:33.07\00:24:34.74 And the treatment of a flu can be successful 00:24:34.77\00:24:37.99 in your home as many of you can attest to. 00:24:38.02\00:24:41.51 You've had it happen just with those simple things that you do. 00:24:41.54\00:24:44.95 Avoid the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents 00:24:44.98\00:24:49.34 such as Tylenol, and others. 00:24:49.37\00:24:52.43 And make certain that you don't knock the props out 00:24:52.46\00:24:55.66 from under your immune system with those. 00:24:55.69\00:24:58.75 Now, you may have had a nosebleed in the past 00:24:58.78\00:25:04.10 and if you have, it may have just baffled you. 00:25:04.13\00:25:06.83 Dr. Miller is going to talk with you a bit about 00:25:06.86\00:25:08.96 what you can do for the nosebleed. 00:25:08.99\00:25:11.21 You know, they are pretty common in children. 00:25:11.24\00:25:13.98 I have had my fair share of the ones when I was a child. 00:25:14.01\00:25:16.65 Usually, a child's nosebleed is caused by 00:25:16.68\00:25:19.82 some type of trauma in the nose. 00:25:19.86\00:25:21.66 And, what I would recommend is to not put a child on the spot 00:25:21.70\00:25:27.22 What you want to do, if a child has a nosebleed, 00:25:27.25\00:25:30.18 you say, "Well, what we need to do is look in your eyes and 00:25:30.21\00:25:32.22 have them"... and you do it for them... 00:25:32.25\00:25:33.78 Put your fingers up on your eyes, and just pull down 00:25:33.81\00:25:36.19 a little bit and have them do that, and when you're doing 00:25:36.22\00:25:38.10 that, under the idea that they're thinking you're looking 00:25:38.13\00:25:41.23 in their eyes, look at their fingertips. 00:25:41.26\00:25:43.28 You'll normally notice whether one of the fingertips 00:25:43.29\00:25:45.85 has a little bit of blood under it, 00:25:45.88\00:25:47.12 and you know the reason for the nosebleed then is because they 00:25:47.15\00:25:50.02 have traumatized their nose by picking their nose. 00:25:50.05\00:25:52.99 And so, that's a very common reason for the nosebleed. 00:25:53.02\00:25:56.53 Another one can be dryness. 00:25:56.56\00:25:58.43 I seem to get this a lot if I'm in a dry area. 00:25:58.46\00:26:01.71 What we have to do there is make sure the air 00:26:01.74\00:26:03.31 around us is more humidified. 00:26:03.34\00:26:05.35 I have a wood stove in my home and I always have a 00:26:05.38\00:26:07.67 pot of water on top, boiling to keep the area humidified. 00:26:07.70\00:26:12.04 It can be a very big danger, for older people 00:26:12.07\00:26:16.21 who are taking some type of blood thinner. 00:26:16.24\00:26:18.03 Even the "aspirin a day, keeps the stroke away" 00:26:18.06\00:26:21.24 type of a thing, because people who take these 00:26:21.27\00:26:23.18 types of items will become bleeders. 00:26:23.21\00:26:25.78 And, they get a trauma, they get some type of high blood pressure 00:26:25.81\00:26:29.67 They get a nosebleed, and sometimes it has a hard time 00:26:30.58\00:26:33.13 stopping... So how can you stop them? 00:26:33.14\00:26:34.91 One way... what you want to do is, you want to sit down 00:26:34.94\00:26:37.88 and you want to lean back but keep your head 00:26:37.91\00:26:40.74 leaning forward... Don't lean your head back 00:26:40.77\00:26:42.32 because then your blood will go down 00:26:42.35\00:26:44.42 into your throat and you'll swallow it. 00:26:44.46\00:26:45.57 You want to sort of lean forward 00:26:45.61\00:26:47.03 and then just take, just a piece of cotton, or a piece of 00:26:47.07\00:26:50.86 tissue, and moisten it. 00:26:50.89\00:26:53.70 Place it in the nose, and then squeeze your nose shut 00:26:53.73\00:26:57.30 for just a short period of time... 00:26:57.33\00:26:59.19 not hard, just squeezing it for a short period of time 00:26:59.22\00:27:03.57 And then gently remove it. 00:27:03.58\00:27:05.72 Sometimes removing it will pull a clot loose, 00:27:05.75\00:27:08.22 so you want to replace it, and again squeeze it. 00:27:08.25\00:27:10.73 You can try ice on the face. 00:27:10.76\00:27:13.11 That sometimes will do. 00:27:13.14\00:27:14.43 Sometimes if it's a really bad one, 00:27:14.46\00:27:16.34 place the arms in contrast baths... 00:27:16.37\00:27:19.79 hot water and then cold water, hot water, cold water 00:27:19.82\00:27:23.18 This is derivative... it will the blood down into the 00:27:23.19\00:27:25.83 periphery and keep it from being so much up here 00:27:25.86\00:27:28.91 in this part of the body. 00:27:28.92\00:27:30.12 Simple things you can do for a nosebleed. 00:27:30.15\00:27:32.73 First thing you want to do is just make sure 00:27:32.76\00:27:35.43 you're not getting them again... 00:27:35.46\00:27:37.50 the trauma, picking at noses, blowing too hard, 00:27:37.53\00:27:40.12 high blood pressure... things we need to look at, Dr. Thrash 00:27:40.15\00:27:42.49 Well, I'm certain that we have not made you into physicians 00:27:43.23\00:27:47.89 in this short period... 00:27:47.92\00:27:49.70 But we do hope that you're better equipped 00:27:49.73\00:27:51.70 to handle those common things that happen in every 00:27:51.73\00:27:54.45 home every day. 00:27:54.48\00:27:55.48
