Hello, my name is Agatha Thrash. 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.55 I'm on the medical staff of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:03.58\00:00:07.03 We have a program for you of gastrointestinal problems, 00:00:07.06\00:00:12.33 and anything that involves the mouth, down all the way 00:00:12.36\00:00:16.19 through the intestinal tract... we might be talking about it. 00:00:16.20\00:00:19.11 So we hope that you will join us 00:00:19.14\00:00:20.57 and I think you'll enjoy our program. 00:00:20.60\00:00:23.63 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:43.54\00:00:45.99 with Dr. Agatha Thrash, of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:46.02\00:00:49.39 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:49.42\00:00:54.46 If someone said to you, "I have an ulcer"... 00:00:54.49\00:00:57.07 You would probably think "peptic ulcer," wouldn't you? 00:00:57.10\00:01:01.12 Now that's strange because most of the time 00:01:01.15\00:01:04.26 when people have an ulcer, it isn't an ulcer of the stomach 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.11 It's an ulcer of the skin... 00:01:08.14\00:01:10.03 but when we say, "I have an ulcer," 00:01:10.04\00:01:12.95 this is such a serious affliction, that most of the 00:01:12.98\00:01:15.53 time, people understand that you mean you've got a 00:01:15.56\00:01:18.57 peptic ulcer in the stomach, or in the esophagus, 00:01:18.60\00:01:21.71 or in the duodenum, or even in the jejunum 00:01:21.74\00:01:24.56 But most of the time, it's in the stomach, or the duodenum 00:01:24.59\00:01:29.00 Now peptic ulcers are so-called because the pepsin 00:01:29.03\00:01:34.53 in the stomach has somehow gotten so that it has 00:01:34.56\00:01:38.87 reached the very tissue of the stomach itself 00:01:38.88\00:01:44.07 and has actually eroded the tissue itself. 00:01:44.10\00:01:48.10 Pepsin is a very powerful digestant... 00:01:48.13\00:01:50.99 and can digest the stomach itself if it actually touches it 00:01:51.02\00:01:54.77 ...And so, for that reason, there is usually a very 00:01:54.80\00:01:57.91 nice layer of mucous all along the lining 00:01:57.94\00:02:03.67 of the intestinal tract from the esophagus 00:02:03.70\00:02:07.31 all the way down through to the anus. 00:02:07.34\00:02:09.85 Now because of that, the powerful digestants 00:02:09.88\00:02:13.96 which we produce, cannot actually get at the lining 00:02:13.99\00:02:19.31 and digest the lining, so that it makes an ulcer for us. 00:02:19.34\00:02:24.56 So what would cause an ulcer to develop? 00:02:24.59\00:02:27.85 Well one of the important things is a GERM. 00:02:27.88\00:02:31.17 A germ called "Helicobacter pylori" 00:02:31.20\00:02:34.68 This germ has been around for a long time 00:02:34.71\00:02:37.76 and yet, we did not know that it afflicted the stomach 00:02:37.77\00:02:42.02 in this way until just the last very few years. 00:02:42.05\00:02:45.62 When I was in medical school, there was one thing 00:02:45.65\00:02:48.39 that we knew for sure about peptic ulcers... 00:02:48.42\00:02:50.88 and that was that it was NOT an infection. 00:02:50.91\00:02:53.70 We knew that it was caused by the pepsin, the peptic digestion 00:02:53.71\00:02:59.74 And so, we called it a "peptic ulcer" 00:02:59.77\00:03:02.11 That's how it got its name. 00:03:02.14\00:03:03.48 And interestingly enough, we continue to act on that 00:03:03.51\00:03:09.99 premise and we treated people for all sorts of things 00:03:10.02\00:03:12.56 having to do with too much acid, too much pepsin, 00:03:12.59\00:03:16.04 too much motility of the stomach, 00:03:16.05\00:03:18.89 too much hyperactivity of the individual... 00:03:18.92\00:03:21.47 a lot of stress... 00:03:21.50\00:03:22.90 We gave them tranquilizers... 00:03:22.93\00:03:24.43 We went in and cut the nerves... 00:03:24.46\00:03:26.08 We did all sorts of things to people to try to 00:03:26.11\00:03:29.12 treat peptic ulcers, and we knew that our treatment 00:03:29.15\00:03:32.39 was not successful, but we didn't understand 00:03:32.42\00:03:35.21 that the reason it was not successful... was because 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.89 it was caused by a germ, and we should attack the GERM 00:03:37.92\00:03:41.14 and not the nerves, or the acid, or the pepsin, or whatever. 00:03:41.17\00:03:45.69 In recent years, we've learned how to treat the people with 00:03:45.72\00:03:50.26 peptic ulcers by attacking the germ itself. 00:03:50.27\00:03:54.84 Now, can you do that with natural remedies? 00:03:54.87\00:03:57.14 Yes, as a matter of fact, I believe that the natural 00:03:57.17\00:04:00.35 remedies are actually more effective than the antibiotics 00:04:00.38\00:04:03.61 that are given for this. 00:04:03.64\00:04:04.87 We have people come to us frequently... who have been 00:04:04.90\00:04:08.25 treated with antibiotics for their peptic ulcers... 00:04:08.28\00:04:10.81 their Helicobacter, and they have not had a success... 00:04:10.84\00:04:14.98 And they come to us and we give them very simple things 00:04:15.01\00:04:17.84 that we treat with... the goldenseal, echinacea, 00:04:17.87\00:04:22.13 the myrrh, the garlic, the grapefruit seed extract, 00:04:22.16\00:04:27.77 and with these things, treatment for a month, 00:04:27.80\00:04:31.04 which is about the standard treatment 00:04:31.07\00:04:32.62 using any kind of treatment... 00:04:32.65\00:04:34.86 we treat them for about a month and most of the time, 00:04:34.87\00:04:38.58 they are completely free of symptoms. 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.78 Even though they may have had the symptoms 00:04:40.81\00:04:43.12 for years and years, they are completely free of symptoms 00:04:43.15\00:04:47.03 usually in about a month. 00:04:47.06\00:04:48.67 And, so we feel very good about the treatment of peptic ulcers 00:04:48.70\00:04:53.85 using these very simple things. 00:04:53.88\00:04:57.05 Of course, at the same time that we tell a person 00:04:57.08\00:05:00.63 about the treatment for peptic ulcer using these herbal things, 00:05:00.66\00:05:04.06 we also tell them how to change the lifestyle... 00:05:04.09\00:05:06.81 Because often, a change in lifestyle is needed so that 00:05:06.82\00:05:10.37 they will not become re-infected with the Helicobacter... 00:05:10.40\00:05:15.90 and that is, indeed, quite a possibility. 00:05:15.93\00:05:19.15 So, one of the things that we tell them to do 00:05:19.18\00:05:22.32 is to make certain they get plenty of exercise. 00:05:22.35\00:05:25.31 Now how does a person get GOOD exercise? 00:05:25.32\00:05:28.75 Well the very best quality exercise is purposeful labor. 00:05:28.78\00:05:33.38 Now purposeful labor is something like doing gardening. 00:05:33.39\00:05:37.48 Or, it may be yard work... Or, painting the house 00:05:37.51\00:05:42.61 ...something that requires that you do some vigorous 00:05:42.64\00:05:47.69 physical labor that has a purpose to it. 00:05:47.72\00:05:51.40 Now if you plant a garden, the weeds that are growing up, 00:05:51.43\00:05:54.81 or the vegetables that mature, they're going to be coercive 00:05:54.84\00:05:58.70 to you to get out there and deal with the garden. 00:05:58.73\00:06:01.87 And so, every day, you must go out there and, for an hour or 2, 00:06:01.90\00:06:05.83 you must work in your garden... 00:06:05.86\00:06:07.79 That's VERY GOOD exercise. It's ideal. 00:06:07.82\00:06:10.69 One more thing that can make exercise ideal is 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.60 that of an exercise partner... 00:06:13.63\00:06:15.19 especially if that's a neighbor, a person who comes from 00:06:15.22\00:06:19.19 a little bit of distance to your house, or you go a little 00:06:19.22\00:06:23.12 bit of distance to her house, and there, the 2 of you 00:06:23.15\00:06:27.04 begin some kind of exercise that's hard, physical labor... 00:06:27.07\00:06:31.66 such as clearing an area that has been neglected 00:06:31.69\00:06:36.45 and maybe you make a little park out of an otherwise 00:06:36.48\00:06:40.86 neglected bramble patch. 00:06:40.89\00:06:42.51 That can be very good labor... 00:06:42.54\00:06:45.85 And because it is purposeful, and because you have a 00:06:45.88\00:06:48.55 partner, both of those are coercive, 00:06:48.58\00:06:51.73 and they sort of give you a little shove to get out of 00:06:51.76\00:06:55.49 doors and get moving. 00:06:55.52\00:06:57.32 Now, I have Don Miller with me here today 00:06:57.35\00:07:00.25 and Don Miller is going to talk with you about 00:07:00.28\00:07:02.82 some things having to do with the gastrointestinal tract 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.31 ...and it looks as if you may be prepared to deal with 00:07:06.34\00:07:09.63 any part of the intestinal tract... 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.14 Well, quite a few things, but the one I want to talk about 00:07:11.17\00:07:12.88 right now is a thing called "GERD" 00:07:12.91\00:07:14.76 One in 5 people have it at some time. 00:07:14.79\00:07:17.25 Even I think sometimes I have it... 00:07:17.28\00:07:19.07 You get that little bit of burning in your esophagus. 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.74 That's what GERD stands for... gastroesophageal reflux disorder 00:07:21.77\00:07:27.16 You've got things bubbling up from your stomach 00:07:27.19\00:07:29.51 into your esophagus which can be very, very irritating... 00:07:29.54\00:07:32.41 And can lead to some long-term and very chronic problems. 00:07:32.44\00:07:36.79 It can even lead to esophageal cancer. 00:07:36.82\00:07:39.38 It can lead to a narrowing of the bottom part of your 00:07:39.39\00:07:43.56 esophagus which will make it hard to swallow. 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.94 It just makes life miserable for many people, 00:07:45.97\00:07:48.38 and some people have it all the time. 00:07:48.41\00:07:49.88 Some of the main factors causing GERD 00:07:49.91\00:07:53.14 are obesity... and, we're going to talk about, briefly, 00:07:53.17\00:07:57.08 how we can avoid that particular problem 00:07:57.11\00:07:59.52 ...a lack of exercise, overeating is a main problem 00:07:59.55\00:08:03.26 because we get so much food down there, 00:08:03.29\00:08:04.95 our stomach tries to force the food back up into the 00:08:04.98\00:08:09.14 main part of your stomach to get even the first part 00:08:09.17\00:08:11.79 of digestion begun, and if we're pushing too hard, 00:08:11.82\00:08:14.92 some of that will come back up through the cardiac sphincter 00:08:14.95\00:08:17.71 and start burning the esophagus because it's got digestive 00:08:17.74\00:08:22.02 juices already in there... 00:08:22.05\00:08:23.13 and it's not made to receive digestive juices. 00:08:23.16\00:08:26.93 Also, taking certain drugs like aspirin, is very bad 00:08:26.94\00:08:31.92 actor when we're talking about GERD. 00:08:31.95\00:08:35.45 What can we do about GERD? 00:08:35.48\00:08:36.99 1. We need to stop eating so much food. 00:08:37.02\00:08:39.44 We need to lose weight. 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.13 We need to eat in a relaxed climate... 00:08:41.14\00:08:43.88 And I would recommend to a person, after they get done 00:08:43.91\00:08:46.46 with a meal, get some of the exercise that 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.76 Dr. Agatha Thrash talked about. 00:08:48.79\00:08:50.46 Many people, when they get done with a meal, 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.14 they go into the other room, and they plop down 00:08:52.15\00:08:54.91 and... watch the TV? Or, go to sleep? 00:08:54.92\00:08:57.93 They are so tired from all that eating, 00:08:57.94\00:08:59.48 they just got to get some rest! 00:08:59.51\00:09:01.24 And I teach people a good habit 00:09:01.27\00:09:04.43 I want them to learn when they're eating... 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.27 The habit that we have when we eat... 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.38 is we have our plate of food, we get a nice big spoon 00:09:08.42\00:09:11.69 or a forkful... we put it into our mouth, 00:09:11.72\00:09:14.09 and the next thing that we do, is we dive RIGHT back down 00:09:14.12\00:09:17.66 to the plate of food, and we start carving 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.96 out the next portion. 00:09:19.97\00:09:21.31 Now our eyes are seeing this, and our brain is interpreting 00:09:21.34\00:09:23.86 all this saying... "Look, here comes another one, 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.36 dump what you've got. " 00:09:26.39\00:09:27.46 And so this unchewed food, is now pushed back to the 00:09:27.47\00:09:31.30 tongue, and as that next spoonful comes up, 00:09:31.33\00:09:34.44 you swallow... and that food is NOT ready to enter 00:09:34.47\00:09:37.63 into your stomach, and you take the next spoonful... 00:09:37.66\00:09:40.13 So what do we do? Here's what I recommend... 00:09:40.16\00:09:42.20 you take a spoonful, forkful, knifeful; 00:09:42.23\00:09:44.61 however, you eat a food... chopstickful, 00:09:44.64\00:09:47.26 put it in your mouth and then lay your eating instrument down 00:09:47.29\00:09:51.01 and chew your food. 00:09:51.04\00:09:52.53 Just chew it and relax as you chew your food. 00:09:52.56\00:09:55.91 Don't sit there and chase one bite after another, 00:09:55.94\00:09:58.68 and don't drink with your meals. 00:09:58.71\00:10:00.52 You need to drink about 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. 00:10:00.53\00:10:04.55 This will be very healthy. 00:10:04.58\00:10:05.66 It helps to build up the digestive juices 00:10:05.67\00:10:08.40 but we don't drink the water or any liquids with our meals 00:10:08.43\00:10:13.67 because of the fact that it will dilute the food 00:10:13.70\00:10:16.53 It will dilute our digestive juices, and when it gets diluted 00:10:16.56\00:10:20.80 the body says... "we need more," and it just pumps more 00:10:20.83\00:10:23.26 into the system. 00:10:23.29\00:10:24.32 We should be in a 2-meal plan. 00:10:24.33\00:10:26.27 As a matter of fact, it will sound as a broken record 00:10:26.30\00:10:28.21 as we talk about all of these intestinal tract problems. 00:10:28.24\00:10:31.60 We need to go to a 2-meal a day plan. 00:10:31.63\00:10:33.69 1. It will lessen our instance of obesity. 00:10:33.72\00:10:36.93 2. It will help with the GERD problem. 00:10:36.94\00:10:39.15 We need to prop up the head of our beds. 00:10:39.18\00:10:41.47 This is a very easy one. 00:10:41.50\00:10:42.71 Now, often GERD is precipitated by a thing called 00:10:42.74\00:10:46.61 a hiatal hernia... 00:10:46.64\00:10:47.68 That little cardiac sphincter has become weak, 00:10:47.71\00:10:49.79 and we've got part of even the stomach protruding up 00:10:49.82\00:10:52.34 in to above the stomach wall there at the cardiac sphincter 00:10:52.37\00:10:58.63 So what we need to do, is raise the head of our bed 00:10:58.66\00:11:01.77 usually by something as simple as putting a couple of bricks 00:11:01.78\00:11:04.10 underneath the 2 legs at the head of your bed 00:11:04.13\00:11:07.18 Now we're laying at a little bit of an incline; 00:11:07.21\00:11:09.96 therefore, all night long, gravity is working to keep 00:11:09.99\00:11:12.73 that food going down. 00:11:12.76\00:11:14.00 Another great reason not to go in and lay down on the 00:11:14.03\00:11:16.19 couch after you eat, if you have GERD, 00:11:16.22\00:11:17.96 because you will have some problems from that. 00:11:17.99\00:11:19.91 Aloe vera and slippery elm... 00:11:19.94\00:11:23.74 Take a couple of ounces of aloe vera every day 00:11:23.77\00:11:25.99 Take some slippery elm tea, it comes in a powder 00:11:26.02\00:11:28.84 You mix it with water... it becomes sort of gelatinous 00:11:28.87\00:11:32.16 You swallow that down. It will coat the lining 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.05 and if you do have some GERD, some reflux, 00:11:35.08\00:11:37.92 it's going to keep from burning it so badly, 00:11:37.95\00:11:40.84 and you can slowly start working on 00:11:40.85\00:11:43.01 taking care of that in the future. 00:11:43.04\00:11:45.02 Avoid sphincter-relaxing foods. 00:11:45.06\00:11:47.01 We've got things like... all of your animal products 00:11:47.04\00:11:49.34 especially milk. Citrus is a sphincter-relaxing 00:11:49.37\00:11:52.54 food, tomatoes... coffee is another one, 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.92 Coffee, alcohol... will all relax that sphincter, 00:11:54.96\00:11:59.69 and when that sphincter relaxes, 00:11:59.73\00:12:02.39 food starts coming back up, and that's what we call GERD. 00:12:02.42\00:12:06.35 And so, rather simple... 00:12:06.39\00:12:08.32 but it's a problem if you don't take care of it. 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.70 Yes, it's an extremely important problem because a large 00:12:10.74\00:12:13.95 number of people are now suffering from it. 00:12:13.98\00:12:15.87 And there are some things needing to do with 00:12:15.90\00:12:18.21 eating hygiene and, of course, Don Miller mentioned 00:12:18.24\00:12:21.66 a number of those... 00:12:21.69\00:12:22.73 Being regular in one's habits, that's very good 00:12:22.76\00:12:25.69 Being very careful not to overeat 00:12:25.70\00:12:28.10 Don't drink a lot of water with your meals. 00:12:28.13\00:12:30.68 Never lie down after you've just finished eating 00:12:30.71\00:12:34.05 because that can, of course, encourage more reflux... 00:12:34.08\00:12:38.05 All of these things represent good eating hygiene. 00:12:38.06\00:12:41.14 Now there is a little affliction of the person called "hiccups" 00:12:41.17\00:12:45.62 Are you equipped to tell us how to handle hiccups? 00:12:46.64\00:12:51.29 Hic- hiccups! 00:12:51.32\00:12:52.29 I think everybody, anywhere, has about 15 different ways 00:12:52.30\00:12:55.59 to take care of the hiccups. 00:12:55.63\00:12:56.64 And, the nice thing is, many of them do work! 00:12:56.68\00:12:59.19 As a matter of fact, in one of your books, 00:12:59.22\00:13:01.08 you have a whole section on just hiccups. Yes 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.46 And I don't think you sat down and thought all those things up. 00:13:03.49\00:13:06.12 No, I learned them from a lot of people who told me 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.94 "This is the way I do it" 00:13:07.97\00:13:09.04 That's right... Well, sometimes the way they do it works 00:13:09.07\00:13:11.80 and sometimes it doesn't... 00:13:11.83\00:13:13.52 Different strokes for different folks. 00:13:13.55\00:13:15.33 But what it basically is, is an irritation of the phrenic nerve 00:13:15.36\00:13:19.03 that plays out along the diaphragm... 00:13:19.06\00:13:21.75 Basically, it's only at one side... that one side 00:13:21.78\00:13:24.01 will have a contraction, and when it contracts, 00:13:24.04\00:13:26.54 it forces air up, and then we get that "heh" 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.08 That sound, and in some people, it's a really loud sound 00:13:29.11\00:13:31.97 Some with just a little tinky sound 00:13:32.00\00:13:33.64 But, what ever it is, it's quite irritating 00:13:33.65\00:13:36.06 if it happens for a period of time. 00:13:36.09\00:13:37.78 And so, what can we do about it? 00:13:37.81\00:13:39.47 Again, you've got your own suggestions 00:13:39.50\00:13:41.35 and I'm going to just give you just a very few things 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.32 that you can do... 00:13:43.35\00:13:44.45 1. We feel if we just put some pressure just below the sternum, 00:13:44.48\00:13:49.77 where the breastbone comes together, 00:13:49.80\00:13:53.22 a little bit of pressure there ... that will take it away 00:13:53.25\00:13:55.57 A doctor once tried this, he had a person sit on the 00:13:55.60\00:13:58.00 edge of a chair, came up behind them, and he sort of 00:13:58.03\00:14:01.95 gently pinched the nape of the neck, 00:14:01.98\00:14:04.49 and then went down and did a little massage 00:14:04.52\00:14:06.21 down both sides of the spine with his thumb. 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.63 And that itself... it took that person's away. 00:14:08.66\00:14:12.66 We've heard about scaring a person... 00:14:12.69\00:14:14.76 will take away the hiccups. 00:14:14.79\00:14:17.00 I don't really recommend that, because scaring a person 00:14:17.03\00:14:19.70 is not a nice thing to do. 00:14:19.73\00:14:20.85 You've heard about people drinking water 00:14:20.88\00:14:22.97 on the other side, you know, almost turning yourself 00:14:23.00\00:14:25.57 upside-down... Perhaps pouring the water 00:14:25.60\00:14:27.82 up your nose, which usually happens, takes it away. 00:14:27.85\00:14:30.58 One way I have found, works very, very good... 00:14:30.61\00:14:35.89 Because of the fact that we do have 00:14:35.92\00:14:37.44 the phrenic nerve involvement. 00:14:37.48\00:14:39.02 It comes down from the brain, it plays out in the mouth, 00:14:39.05\00:14:42.20 roof of your mouth, your uvula, goes on down your throat, 00:14:42.23\00:14:45.13 a little bit on your lungs but, basically it ends up down 00:14:45.16\00:14:48.16 on your diaphragm... 00:14:48.19\00:14:49.42 So what you do, when you have the hiccups, 00:14:49.45\00:14:51.59 you go to a mirror, and you take something like the 00:14:51.62\00:14:55.14 other end of your toothbrush, and you look into the mirror, 00:14:55.17\00:14:59.03 and you open your mouth real wide... 00:14:59.06\00:15:00.87 and you look at that little uvula... that little thing 00:15:00.90\00:15:02.70 that hangs down in the back of your throat, 00:15:02.73\00:15:04.24 which I, when I was young, I thought that was my tonsils 00:15:04.27\00:15:06.34 until they took my tonsils out, 00:15:06.37\00:15:07.60 then I wondered they left one in there but that's your uvula 00:15:07.63\00:15:10.16 What you do is, as you're looking at that thing, 00:15:10.56\00:15:12.96 you go back there with your toothbrush, 00:15:12.97\00:15:14.67 and you touch the side of it, and just move it to the side... 00:15:14.70\00:15:18.00 just a little bit... don't keep it back there 00:15:18.03\00:15:21.38 long enough to gag you, but just a little bit. 00:15:21.41\00:15:23.60 What will happen, is the phrenic nerve 00:15:23.63\00:15:26.03 gets so involved with what you're doing with the uvula 00:15:26.06\00:15:29.83 that it forgets to send the signal to cause the contraction 00:15:29.86\00:15:33.28 on your diaphragm and I have seen it STOP 00:15:33.31\00:15:36.74 hiccups in a heartbeat! 00:15:36.77\00:15:39.30 So I like those things! 00:15:39.33\00:15:41.46 Some of them actually are funny! 00:15:41.49\00:15:44.67 And I like to deal with hiccups. 00:15:44.70\00:15:47.66 In a baby, they can get the hiccups for so long, that 00:15:47.69\00:15:51.23 finally they just get frustrated with them and begin to cry 00:15:51.26\00:15:53.98 every time they hic... 00:15:54.01\00:15:55.25 So if you just take your little finger, slip it in on the corner 00:15:55.28\00:15:58.61 of their mouth, reach back and just massage the palate, 00:15:58.64\00:16:02.19 for a minute or so, they won't like that, 00:16:02.22\00:16:05.58 and that's a part of the treatment too 00:16:05.61\00:16:07.58 and usually it will stop their hiccups if you're willing 00:16:07.61\00:16:10.79 to fight with the infant long enough to massage 00:16:10.82\00:16:14.32 the back of the throat... be sure your fingernail is short 00:16:14.35\00:16:17.96 when you're doing this. 00:16:17.99\00:16:19.10 Now, I see that you have here a treatment for nausea 00:16:19.11\00:16:24.94 and an unset stomach... Yes... yes 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.01 You want to tell us about that? 00:16:26.04\00:16:27.32 I firsthand experience with nausea... Firsthand 00:16:27.35\00:16:30.97 Ohh... first everything... First knees because I spent 00:16:31.00\00:16:33.94 2 days on my knees hanging over the side of a boat 00:16:33.97\00:16:36.00 I was stationed in Key West and I had a friend who was a 00:16:36.03\00:16:38.74 fisherman and I thought... "What an easy job, he fishes all day" 00:16:38.77\00:16:42.19 I used to be, in my old life, I used to love to fish, 00:16:42.22\00:16:45.72 and so he let me go out with him for 4 days 00:16:45.73\00:16:47.57 and for 2 days, I never got off my knees. 00:16:47.60\00:16:49.76 I was SO seasick. 00:16:49.79\00:16:51.74 And, I wish I had some of these simple things with me 00:16:51.77\00:16:54.39 at the time. 00:16:54.42\00:16:55.43 One is something as simple as a product called carob. 00:16:55.46\00:16:59.96 I suggest you have some of this around. 00:16:59.99\00:17:02.32 It's an excellent replacement for chocolate. 00:17:02.35\00:17:05.57 You can make all kinds of nice products with carob. 00:17:05.60\00:17:09.03 You could mix it with soymilk, and make carob sauce 00:17:09.06\00:17:12.25 But this is a nice treatment for upset stomach 00:17:12.28\00:17:14.89 What you do is... you take a spoonful of the carob powder 00:17:14.92\00:17:19.23 and you put it in a glass of some sort and then you add 00:17:19.26\00:17:24.17 a little bit of water... 00:17:24.20\00:17:26.06 And what you're looking to make is a little charcoal paste 00:17:26.09\00:17:31.14 ...sort of, oh maybe the consistency of pudding 00:17:31.17\00:17:36.17 I'm going to get it all over the table, but that's all right... 00:17:36.20\00:17:38.23 Because what we're trying to do is get something 00:17:38.24\00:17:40.38 that's going to take care of my upset stomach 00:17:40.41\00:17:42.84 Once you've got your paste made up, 00:17:42.87\00:17:45.17 you take a spoonful of the paste... 00:17:45.20\00:17:49.38 You can see I've got a lump of the paste here 00:17:49.41\00:17:51.79 A nice carob paste... 00:17:51.82\00:17:53.26 Nice carob... it's not unpleasant-tasting. 00:17:53.29\00:17:55.94 Smells good. It is. 00:17:55.97\00:17:58.11 If you took chocolate powder, it would be bitter, 00:17:58.12\00:18:02.50 but this is LOVELY food! 00:18:02.53\00:18:04.53 You put it in your mouth and just suck on it. 00:18:04.56\00:18:06.93 As a matter of fact, make it a little bit drier than this 00:18:06.96\00:18:09.11 ...Put it in your mouth and just spend some time 00:18:09.14\00:18:10.98 holding that in your mouth and slowly sucking on it. 00:18:11.01\00:18:14.47 We've found that this is a very nice way to calm 00:18:14.50\00:18:18.76 the upset stomach. 00:18:18.79\00:18:19.95 All right... if you don't have any carob, what can you do? 00:18:19.98\00:18:22.95 Now I'm going to mention a few things, 00:18:22.98\00:18:24.40 and if you say, "I don't have these things," 00:18:24.43\00:18:26.10 my recommendation is go out and get some of these 00:18:26.13\00:18:28.68 particular products because you are going to want to 00:18:28.71\00:18:31.59 have them around for that time the upset stomach comes. 00:18:31.62\00:18:35.26 Another thing you can do is, use charcoal powder. 00:18:35.29\00:18:37.59 Never take a spoonful and put this in your mouth! 00:18:37.62\00:18:41.10 You mix it with water... into a nice slurry, you drink it down 00:18:41.13\00:18:45.79 That is an EXCELLENT remedy for an upset stomach 00:18:45.82\00:18:50.30 Now, when I used to travel a lot with my daughter 00:18:50.33\00:18:53.38 when she was quite young, I would carry these small cans of 00:18:53.41\00:18:57.21 fruit juice with me, and she invariably would get carsick 00:18:57.24\00:19:01.72 I would pop the top, pour it into another jar, 00:19:01.75\00:19:04.85 I always carried another jar around with me 00:19:04.88\00:19:06.98 ...a little bit larger, 00:19:07.01\00:19:08.47 I'd put a couple of spoonfuls of charcoal powder in... 00:19:08.50\00:19:10.85 I'd put the lid on and I would shake it up. 00:19:10.88\00:19:13.18 If you've ever tried to stir charcoal powder, 00:19:13.21\00:19:15.51 it looks like Mount Vesuvius! 00:19:15.54\00:19:17.03 But if you shake up the bottle, no problem. 00:19:17.06\00:19:19.59 Take a lid off, put a straw in there and my daughter could 00:19:19.62\00:19:22.46 taste the fruit juice coming through. 00:19:22.49\00:19:24.13 Now, quite frankly, I mean, you know... realistically, 00:19:24.16\00:19:26.96 the charcoal will take up, or be bound a little bit 00:19:26.99\00:19:29.69 by the juice, but she was getting enough charcoal 00:19:29.72\00:19:32.05 down into her stomach and it ALWAYS took care of her problem. 00:19:32.08\00:19:34.70 There are other nice things that you can do... 00:19:34.73\00:19:36.95 I carry with me, a little bottle of peppermint oil... 00:19:36.98\00:19:41.47 And if I feel nausea coming on, I do this when I'm in an 00:19:41.50\00:19:44.02 airplane... I'll put a little toothpick in there 00:19:44.05\00:19:46.50 and just put that toothpick in your mouth! 00:19:46.53\00:19:48.26 Peppermint oil has been shown to relieve upset stomach. 00:19:48.29\00:19:52.31 Another thing you can do is use ginger. 00:19:52.34\00:19:54.74 Just some ginger powder, swallow that down 00:19:54.77\00:19:57.63 That's also been shown to relieve nausea. 00:19:57.66\00:20:00.97 And, I knew a woman one time, I believe she was 00:20:00.98\00:20:05.10 inspired by God with some of the things she came up with 00:20:05.13\00:20:07.57 But she was out in a boat, and it was very, very stormy 00:20:07.60\00:20:11.49 and she was very, very seasick, and quite frankly, 00:20:11.50\00:20:13.73 seasickness can cause some very, very large problems. 00:20:13.76\00:20:17.03 And so probably for the one and only time in her life, 00:20:17.06\00:20:19.84 she took a little bit of coffee. 00:20:19.87\00:20:21.77 And that little bit of coffee, 00:20:21.80\00:20:23.39 even took care of her upset stomach... 00:20:23.42\00:20:25.32 So for medicinal uses, once in a RARE period of time, 00:20:25.35\00:20:29.81 we will allow you to have some coffee if you don't have 00:20:29.84\00:20:32.35 anything else, because I'm afraid, one of the things 00:20:32.38\00:20:34.24 about coffee, Dr. Thrash, it's ubiquitous... 00:20:34.27\00:20:36.07 That stuff is everywhere! 00:20:36.10\00:20:37.31 I mean, it's the world's most used psychoactive drug 00:20:37.34\00:20:40.71 So what's out there? 00:20:40.74\00:20:41.80 So I say, when you have an upset stomach, 00:20:41.83\00:20:43.54 and you have nothing else along these lines, 00:20:43.57\00:20:45.79 I'd say try a little bit of coffee... I'm afraid. 00:20:45.82\00:20:48.75 In a similar way, a coke will also be settling to the stomach 00:20:48.76\00:20:52.71 It has a little potassium in it, and it does settle the stomach 00:20:52.74\00:20:58.10 and soothe the irritation, and sometimes 00:20:58.13\00:21:01.49 it will take up, or cause to move out some of those things 00:21:01.50\00:21:05.28 that might be irritating. 00:21:05.31\00:21:06.38 Now with charcoal, you can take the dose, 00:21:06.41\00:21:10.00 and then if you feel inclined, and you vomit the dose, 00:21:10.01\00:21:14.89 that's fine too... because sometimes vomiting 00:21:14.92\00:21:17.62 what is in the stomach, will make it so that the stomach 00:21:17.65\00:21:19.96 ceases to be upset at all. 00:21:19.99\00:21:21.86 Now I'd like to spend a few minutes talking with you about 00:21:21.89\00:21:25.13 gallstones... and I happen to have some from 00:21:25.16\00:21:27.20 my museum here. 00:21:27.23\00:21:28.90 These gallstones came from different individuals. 00:21:28.93\00:21:32.68 Every gallstone here came from a different individual. 00:21:32.71\00:21:35.61 You can see that some of them are different colors from others 00:21:35.64\00:21:38.06 Some are a bit more fragile than others. 00:21:39.00\00:21:41.33 This one is white, and that makes it quite a rare stone 00:21:41.36\00:21:46.25 It's a good gem stone, and I rather like to have 00:21:46.28\00:21:50.48 this kind of stone, but you have to have a special license 00:21:50.51\00:21:54.92 to go prospecting for this kind of stone. 00:21:54.95\00:21:58.05 I have many different gallstones in my collection 00:21:58.08\00:22:02.63 and they are as specific to the person as their fingerprint is. 00:22:02.66\00:22:07.66 They are all unique and, in fact, a person, when they begin 00:22:07.69\00:22:12.27 making gallstones, may make one type, and then as the 00:22:12.28\00:22:17.03 physiology of the gallbladder changes, 00:22:17.06\00:22:19.48 they start making another type. 00:22:19.51\00:22:21.57 Sometimes they are tiny, and black... 00:22:21.60\00:22:24.17 and sometimes they are big and grey. 00:22:24.20\00:22:26.23 Sometimes they are medium size and white. 00:22:26.26\00:22:29.46 The color is specific for the kind of chemistry 00:22:29.49\00:22:34.34 that the person has in the gallbladder and in the liver 00:22:34.37\00:22:37.78 at that particular time. 00:22:37.81\00:22:39.26 Now, what can one do for gallstones? 00:22:39.29\00:22:42.49 Gallstones often come about in those people 00:22:42.52\00:22:48.30 who have some altered metabolism in some way. 00:22:48.33\00:22:52.78 They may be metabolizing fat in a wrong way... 00:22:52.81\00:22:56.79 Or, they may be eating more fat than their particular 00:22:56.80\00:23:00.77 physiologic mechanism can handle. 00:23:00.80\00:23:03.20 And they need to cut down on the free fats, 00:23:03.23\00:23:06.03 and maybe even some of the combined fats, 00:23:06.06\00:23:08.25 such as nuts and beans, and avocado and olives 00:23:08.28\00:23:13.95 ...Any of the fatty foods, that they may be taking, 00:23:13.98\00:23:17.81 they may need to cut down on those... 00:23:17.84\00:23:20.11 so that the mechanism that they have for dealing 00:23:20.12\00:23:23.39 with fats is going to be sufficient to be able to 00:23:23.42\00:23:27.37 handle those fats. 00:23:27.40\00:23:29.14 In addition to that, taking fats with sugar 00:23:29.17\00:23:31.98 ...the 2 things together, fats and sugar 00:23:32.01\00:23:35.32 Some people can tolerate, really, quite large quantities 00:23:35.35\00:23:38.49 and not seem to be harmed; 00:23:38.52\00:23:39.80 whereas, other people can take only a small quantity 00:23:39.83\00:23:42.94 and they get gallstones from it. 00:23:42.97\00:23:44.95 The Alaskan Eskimos are of this kind... 00:23:44.98\00:23:47.81 They took LARGE quantities of fat and had no problem 00:23:47.84\00:23:51.11 with it... They took whale blubber, 00:23:51.14\00:23:52.91 and seal blubber and the fats in the foods, 00:23:52.94\00:23:56.00 the fats in the fish that they ate, these gave their 00:23:56.01\00:23:59.84 diet an enormous amount of fat, and yet, 00:23:59.87\00:24:03.39 they did not have gallstones UNTIL they added sweets to that. 00:24:03.42\00:24:07.85 So when the Alcan Highway went through, 00:24:07.88\00:24:10.25 and along with it came a lot of sugar... 00:24:10.26\00:24:12.44 Adding the sugar to the already high fat diet 00:24:12.47\00:24:15.62 spelled for them a lot of problems. 00:24:15.65\00:24:17.30 It spelled for them gallstones. 00:24:17.33\00:24:19.48 It spelled for them acne... 00:24:19.51\00:24:21.54 carious teeth, hardening of the arteries, 00:24:21.57\00:24:24.96 and many other problems that they had never had before 00:24:24.97\00:24:27.96 the advent of sugar. 00:24:27.99\00:24:29.27 Even though their diet would not be one that we would think 00:24:29.28\00:24:32.28 would be very healthy, or one that is at all well-balanced. 00:24:32.31\00:24:38.38 Now, what can you do if you have gallstones... 00:24:38.41\00:24:42.00 One thing is drink PLENTY of water... 00:24:42.03\00:24:43.81 Because with the water, comes a little better 00:24:43.84\00:24:47.38 physiologic surroundings for the gallbladder, 00:24:47.41\00:24:52.28 and the gallbladder works better. 00:24:52.31\00:24:54.48 So, just the drinking of a lot of water, can in itself, 00:24:54.49\00:24:58.51 be helpful. 00:24:58.54\00:24:59.97 The second thing, if you're at all overweight, 00:25:00.00\00:25:02.15 lose weight. 00:25:02.16\00:25:03.41 Now, how much should a person weigh? 00:25:03.44\00:25:05.03 Well a woman and gallstones are far more common 00:25:05.06\00:25:08.21 in women, than in men... 00:25:08.24\00:25:09.75 That's not to say men don't have them 00:25:09.78\00:25:11.59 but just that the affliction is more common in women. 00:25:11.62\00:25:16.07 And so, for a woman, she can have 100 pounds for her 00:25:16.10\00:25:19.79 first 5 feet; then 5 pounds per 1 inch thereafter. 00:25:19.82\00:25:27.60 So if she is 5 feet 1 inch, she could weight 105 pounds. 00:25:27.63\00:25:33.48 One-hundred pounds for the first 5 feet 00:25:33.51\00:25:35.29 and 5 pounds per inch thereafter. 00:25:35.32\00:25:37.48 For a man, he gets 100 pounds for his first 5 feet, 00:25:37.51\00:25:43.21 and then after that, he gets 6 or 7 pounds per inch 00:25:43.24\00:25:48.58 depending on how muscular he is. 00:25:48.61\00:25:50.53 So if you're over that, then of course, you can start 00:25:50.56\00:25:54.50 losing weight... How do you do that? 00:25:54.54\00:25:57.37 By simple things... such as becoming a total vegetarian 00:25:57.40\00:26:01.28 Only eating breakfast and lunch and not eating 00:26:01.31\00:26:05.83 anything between meals... 00:26:05.86\00:26:06.98 And if you eat ANYTHING at all for supper, it would be 00:26:07.01\00:26:09.99 like a piece of fruit and that will help one. 00:26:10.02\00:26:13.85 Usually with just these very simple measures, 00:26:13.88\00:26:16.50 it will help a person to lose weight. 00:26:16.53\00:26:18.74 If more is needed than that, then one can eliminate 00:26:18.77\00:26:21.77 all free fats such as margarine, mayonnaise, fried foods, 00:26:21.80\00:26:25.32 cooking fats, salad oils and even nut butters 00:26:25.35\00:26:28.24 until the time comes when the person has lost 00:26:28.27\00:26:31.38 weight sufficiently that they say they are now normal weight. 00:26:31.41\00:26:34.52 Now in addition to those things, adopting an ALL vegetarian diet 00:26:34.55\00:26:40.04 is the most favorable for gallstones. 00:26:40.07\00:26:43.06 Now here you have a gallbladder filled with stones... 00:26:43.09\00:26:46.98 Should you have your gallbladder operated on? 00:26:47.01\00:26:49.57 Well a lot of people say, "No, just keep your gallbladder 00:26:49.60\00:26:53.37 full of its stones. " 00:26:53.40\00:26:54.43 I'm one of those... I think that we will do better 00:26:54.46\00:26:57.57 if we just keep the stones, rather than 00:26:57.60\00:26:59.56 having them operated on. 00:26:59.59\00:27:00.84 Some people say, "But, if you keep the stones, 00:27:00.87\00:27:03.68 you're more likely to get cancer of the gallbladder" 00:27:03.71\00:27:05.82 Yes, cancer of the gallbladder is rare and the fatal 00:27:05.85\00:27:13.79 operations for gallbladder are also rare. 00:27:13.82\00:27:17.09 So both of these are rare conditions 00:27:17.12\00:27:20.15 but one is about like the other... 00:27:20.18\00:27:22.51 So I would say that your chances of dying of the surgery 00:27:22.54\00:27:27.16 are about like your chances of getting the cancer of the 00:27:27.19\00:27:32.97 gallbladder... So I would take my chance 00:27:33.00\00:27:36.57 with the cancer of the gallbladder... 00:27:36.60\00:27:37.91 and I think that you would be unlikely to get the cancer 00:27:37.92\00:27:42.09 of the gallbladder. 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.66 Now I hope that these things that we have talked 00:27:43.69\00:27:46.42 with you about the gastrointestinal tract 00:27:46.45\00:27:49.57 will help you to know what an important organ 00:27:49.60\00:27:52.30 this system is... 00:27:52.33\00:27:54.16 and to take VERY good care of yours. 00:27:54.19\00:27:56.08
