Hello, I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.47 at Uchee Pines Institute... 00:00:04.50\00:00:06.08 This is a place where we train medical missionaries 00:00:06.11\00:00:08.76 to deal with a lot of different kinds of things. 00:00:08.79\00:00:12.34 We have a program for you today about a potpourri 00:00:12.35\00:00:15.25 of things having to do with the skin, with the mouth, 00:00:15.28\00:00:18.86 with the gums, and with infections, and so we hope that 00:00:18.89\00:00:23.96 you will be with us and enjoy our program. 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.78 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:47.14\00:00:49.72 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:49.75\00:00:53.33 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:53.36\00:00:58.54 A tooth is a very common thing but it is most 00:00:58.57\00:01:02.05 marvelously engineered. 00:01:02.08\00:01:03.63 Do you know that a tooth is set in a socket... 00:01:03.66\00:01:08.22 that if you should happen to injure that tooth 00:01:08.25\00:01:13.72 or get it loose, we can, if it isn't separated already 00:01:13.75\00:01:18.26 from its nerve, we can just push it back up into the socket 00:01:18.29\00:01:21.59 and then, if we will not chew on it for a while, 00:01:21.62\00:01:26.30 it will actually grow back into its place 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.88 and be just a nice, normal tooth. 00:01:29.92\00:01:32.31 So, we can always hope if we have a loosened tooth, 00:01:32.34\00:01:35.54 that it doesn't get broken from its nerve. 00:01:35.57\00:01:38.70 The tooth has the nerve on the interior, 00:01:38.71\00:01:41.48 then on the outside of that, there is another casing 00:01:41.51\00:01:45.04 ...and then out on the outside, there's another casing 00:01:45.07\00:01:48.08 called enamel... this is the white part of the tooth 00:01:48.11\00:01:51.02 ...the part that shows and the part that we hope is white. 00:01:51.05\00:01:54.78 That makes us have a very nice, beautiful smile... 00:01:54.81\00:01:58.51 having white teeth. 00:01:58.52\00:02:00.51 I'm so glad the Lord didn't make us with black teeth, 00:02:00.54\00:02:03.39 or purple teeth... even blue teeth... 00:02:03.40\00:02:06.68 I'm not too sorry to have blue eyes, 00:02:06.71\00:02:09.54 but I wouldn't want blue teeth. 00:02:09.57\00:02:11.56 I think the Lord knew just how to make us in an 00:02:11.59\00:02:14.79 artistically-designed whole, so that we would 00:02:14.82\00:02:18.40 look very pleasing. 00:02:18.43\00:02:19.65 I think human beings look very nice. 00:02:19.68\00:02:22.37 Now, in addition to the tooth and its socket, 00:02:22.40\00:02:25.83 we have gums... and gums are also a very nice 00:02:25.86\00:02:29.94 part of the smile, but gums can sometimes get afflicted. 00:02:29.97\00:02:33.73 And Don Miller, who is a Lifestyle counselor at 00:02:33.76\00:02:36.79 Uchee Pines, is going to talk with you about some of 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.37 these things having to do with the mouth, 00:02:39.40\00:02:41.20 and I can guess from what I see in your hand, 00:02:41.23\00:02:43.85 that you're going to be talking about the throat as well... 00:02:43.88\00:02:45.98 I am going to do that... 00:02:45.99\00:02:47.23 So, tell us what you have for us... Okay 00:02:47.26\00:02:49.15 You know, the teeth are so very important... 00:02:49.18\00:02:51.16 As a matter of fact, they sort of related or correlated 00:02:51.19\00:02:55.07 people growing old sooner with the lack of teeth. 00:02:55.10\00:02:59.01 As we get older, we lose our teeth... 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.54 We don't chew our food as well and 00:03:01.57\00:03:03.79 we seem to get older a little bit sooner it seems. 00:03:03.82\00:03:06.31 So we need to take good care of these teeth. 00:03:06.34\00:03:08.18 I've known many people in their 80s and 90s 00:03:08.21\00:03:11.16 and even in their 100s, with all of their teeth still intact 00:03:11.19\00:03:14.46 because they've taken good care of their teeth. 00:03:14.49\00:03:17.04 Dr. Thrash mentioned the gums... 00:03:17.07\00:03:19.62 We can get an inflammation, a bleeding of the gums, 00:03:19.65\00:03:22.82 and even a receding of the gums. 00:03:22.85\00:03:25.58 When we start seeing that particular problem, 00:03:25.61\00:03:28.33 we realize that if we don't arrest it there, 00:03:28.36\00:03:30.88 it's going to get a whole lot worse later into something 00:03:30.91\00:03:33.63 called periodontal gum disease. 00:03:33.66\00:03:36.15 So what we want to do, is take care of our gums and our teeth. 00:03:36.18\00:03:39.42 Some simple things... 00:03:39.43\00:03:40.59 1. Our mothers hopefully have been telling us this 00:03:40.60\00:03:43.63 all of our lives... Take good care of your teeth. 00:03:43.66\00:03:46.19 Brush your teeth every day. 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.81 Now, there are some important points about brushing your teeth 00:03:47.84\00:03:50.49 I know that years ago, when I first went into the military, 00:03:50.52\00:03:53.60 they taught us how to brush our teeth. 00:03:53.63\00:03:55.03 And basically, you took that toothbrush and you put that 00:03:55.06\00:03:57.75 that thing in your fist and you stuck that thing back 00:03:57.78\00:03:59.61 in your head and you went back and forth, 00:03:59.64\00:04:01.58 and you scrubbed, and you scrubbed and you scrubbed 00:04:01.61\00:04:03.39 And I was good at taking orders and so I scrubbed and I scrubbed 00:04:03.42\00:04:06.93 and I scrubbed until I pretty much wore the enamel away 00:04:06.96\00:04:09.79 from the place on the top of my teeth 00:04:09.82\00:04:12.17 just where it gets into the gums, where now I have 00:04:12.18\00:04:14.43 that particular problem. 00:04:14.46\00:04:15.52 But we should be doing more of a sweeping motion 00:04:15.55\00:04:19.00 I've brought my toothbrush with me today 00:04:19.03\00:04:21.64 ...and a couple of recommendations about your 00:04:21.67\00:04:25.32 toothbrush, I'm not going to recommend a brand, 00:04:25.35\00:04:27.78 or a shape, or a color, but I do recommend soft bristles. 00:04:27.81\00:04:32.08 And if you have sensitive teeth, you have this problem 00:04:32.11\00:04:35.71 and you're getting ready to brush your teeth, 00:04:35.72\00:04:37.66 I suggest you take your toothbrush, and you 00:04:37.69\00:04:40.47 soak the bristles in hot water which will soften them up 00:04:40.50\00:04:43.72 just a little bit more before you brush your teeth. 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.31 Now I, once... okay, if hot water is going to make them 00:04:46.34\00:04:50.17 soft, boiling water will make them softer... 00:04:50.20\00:04:52.18 So I once did that, I put them in boiling water... 00:04:52.21\00:04:54.15 Don't do that... it looks like your toothbrush is 00:04:54.18\00:04:56.53 having a bad hair day. 00:04:56.56\00:04:58.35 You've got to leave that one... have a bad hair day 00:04:58.38\00:05:01.16 It looks as if it's flattened out. 00:05:01.19\00:05:02.89 But see, I've had this toothbrush a long time... 00:05:02.92\00:05:05.72 and we shouldn't do that. 00:05:05.75\00:05:07.20 When they start looking like this thing, 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.39 we need to get a new toothbrush. A new tooth brush! 00:05:09.40\00:05:11.54 So... remind me to get a new toothbrush. 00:05:11.57\00:05:14.58 But, I'm sort of fond of this. 00:05:14.61\00:05:16.80 As a matter of fact, they've got these new things... 00:05:16.83\00:05:18.51 they're colored at the end... when the color fades away, 00:05:18.54\00:05:20.99 it means it's time to replace the toothbrush. 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.06 It's a good marketing thing, if nothing else. 00:05:23.07\00:05:25.30 But we should brush our teeth DOWN with the grain of the tooth 00:05:25.33\00:05:30.42 Put the edge of the toothbrush up near the gums, 00:05:30.45\00:05:33.40 do a little sweeping motion... a little back-and-forth motion 00:05:33.43\00:05:37.05 to get up underneath the gums and then SWEEP DOWN 00:05:37.08\00:05:39.78 And, we don't stop there. 00:05:39.81\00:05:41.93 It's good then to do some dental flossing. 00:05:41.96\00:05:44.35 People have a lot of bad breath. 00:05:44.36\00:05:47.81 And I have found a real good way to determine if you have 00:05:47.84\00:05:51.20 bad breath or not... because you can do this all day 00:05:51.23\00:05:55.06 No... smells great... well, all you're smelling is your hand! 00:05:55.09\00:05:57.26 You're not smelling your breath. 00:05:57.29\00:05:58.53 But if you take something like a... they have these little 00:05:58.56\00:06:01.39 toothpicks with brushes. 00:06:01.42\00:06:03.14 It's called a tooth... I forget what it's called 00:06:03.17\00:06:05.49 It's something like a toothbrush but it's a little toothpick 00:06:05.52\00:06:07.81 thing with a little brushy end on the end 00:06:07.84\00:06:09.54 ...stick that between your teeth, twirl it once, 00:06:09.57\00:06:12.12 bring it out and smell it! 00:06:12.15\00:06:13.61 That's what your breath smells like. 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.05 I'm sure you'll stand closer to your toothpaste 00:06:15.06\00:06:18.15 the next time you brush your teeth. 00:06:18.18\00:06:19.91 But we need to keep our teeth clean inside and all around them 00:06:19.92\00:06:23.62 We also need to keep our mouths well-hydrated. 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.63 We have to realize that our teeth... even our teeth 00:06:26.66\00:06:29.52 about 10% fluid content. 00:06:29.55\00:06:32.14 Which means that there is some fluid inside 00:06:32.17\00:06:34.99 in the pulp of our teeth. 00:06:35.03\00:06:36.44 If we are not drinking enough water, eating a lot of sweets, 00:06:36.47\00:06:40.28 or fat, we are clogging up this very minute capillary system 00:06:40.31\00:06:44.81 Therefore, we are closing off the nutrient pipeline 00:06:44.84\00:06:49.01 to the tooth, and if we do that, 00:06:49.04\00:06:51.05 we're going to start having a weakened tooth. 00:06:51.08\00:06:53.00 And when we weaken the tooth, it is now open for assault 00:06:53.03\00:06:57.25 from an outside invader. 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.18 The plaque building up because we don't brush properly 00:06:59.21\00:07:02.24 the tooth itself becoming weak because we're drinking 00:07:02.25\00:07:05.13 2 cups of water a day and eating gummy bears all day 00:07:05.14\00:07:07.59 We need to find a way to keep our teeth healthy 00:07:07.62\00:07:10.56 inside and out... so we do something simple like that. 00:07:10.59\00:07:12.97 But if you already have the bleeding of the gums, 00:07:13.00\00:07:16.17 there are a few things you can do... 00:07:16.20\00:07:17.30 1. You should rinse your mouth out quite often. 00:07:17.33\00:07:20.79 If you have a Waterpik, that's fine. 00:07:20.82\00:07:22.92 Use your Waterpik in-between your teeth, 00:07:22.95\00:07:25.14 and up around the gums 00:07:25.15\00:07:26.33 And then you might want to take a little bit of goldenseal herb 00:07:26.36\00:07:29.80 Now, it's bitter as all get-out but it's a very nice herb 00:07:29.81\00:07:33.05 You put a little bit on your moistened finger, 00:07:33.06\00:07:34.86 and massage it up into your gums. 00:07:34.89\00:07:38.63 You can also use baking soda... massage that up into your gums 00:07:38.66\00:07:42.73 But then I would recommend after that, you rinse your mouth 00:07:42.76\00:07:45.14 and you spit it out because you don't want the baking soda 00:07:45.17\00:07:47.26 inside your body... You want it basically 00:07:47.29\00:07:49.52 helping with this particular problem with your teeth. 00:07:49.53\00:07:52.02 And then you have to increase your diet with raw foods 00:07:52.05\00:07:56.25 and good fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. 00:07:56.28\00:08:00.73 This is a diet that's made for us to keep our bodies healthy. 00:08:00.76\00:08:04.15 And I want to recommend to you, mothers, and even to you young 00:08:04.18\00:08:07.64 children who are listening, who really say... 00:08:07.67\00:08:11.11 "I want to present my TEETH... even my TEETH 00:08:11.14\00:08:13.88 living sacrifices to the Lord. 00:08:13.91\00:08:16.00 We find that if a child is not introduced to 00:08:16.01\00:08:19.09 refined carbohydrates in the form of sugar before they're 00:08:19.12\00:08:22.75 11 years of age... OFTEN, they NEVER have to face carious teeth 00:08:22.78\00:08:28.60 in their whole lives... 00:08:28.63\00:08:29.79 and all the other problems that go along with it. 00:08:29.82\00:08:32.54 So, let's say you have the first one... 00:08:32.55\00:08:33.94 You've got the bleeding gums, and you do not take care of it 00:08:33.97\00:08:37.15 Your next step is pyorrhea... which basically is 00:08:37.18\00:08:41.42 that infection has gone down to the tooth socket 00:08:41.45\00:08:45.03 right down to the bone. 00:08:45.06\00:08:46.50 Now we're in serious situation, so many times 00:08:46.51\00:08:49.55 I'm afraid that the treatment of choice is to take 00:08:49.58\00:08:51.90 all the teeth out. 00:08:51.93\00:08:53.16 But if you can get it before the teeth start getting loose 00:08:53.19\00:08:55.88 in their sockets, I recommend large doses of charcoal. 00:08:55.91\00:08:59.31 I've had people mix up a paste of charcoal, 00:08:59.34\00:09:03.80 put it on their toothbrush, get it all on their toothbrush, 00:09:03.83\00:09:06.74 go up there and they pack it between their teeth 00:09:06.77\00:09:09.49 up around their gums, all in their mouth at nighttime 00:09:09.52\00:09:12.06 and then they leave it there all night long. 00:09:12.09\00:09:14.56 The charcoal will be adsorbing the infection, will be helping 00:09:14.59\00:09:19.04 with the inflammation, and I have seen 00:09:19.07\00:09:21.90 when the teeth are just barely getting started being loosened, 00:09:21.93\00:09:25.66 the whole process reversed. 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.55 And so you put a lot of charcoal in your mouth... 00:09:27.58\00:09:29.43 I would go then also with the goldenseal. 00:09:29.46\00:09:32.03 I would go with the baking soda with hydrogen peroxide 00:09:32.06\00:09:35.31 massaged into the teeth, all around the teeth... 00:09:35.34\00:09:38.60 and, of course, rinse your mouth out afterwards 00:09:38.63\00:09:40.94 ...Flossing your teeth. 00:09:40.97\00:09:42.70 Flossing the teeth, you'll find the first few times, 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.91 if you're not used to flossing, the first few times you floss 00:09:44.94\00:09:47.84 you're going to get blood. 00:09:47.85\00:09:49.19 But the more you do that, you sort of toughen up the gums 00:09:49.22\00:09:52.31 ...you toughen up the teeth and that very toughening action, 00:09:52.34\00:09:55.78 is going to help you avoid your appointment... 00:09:55.81\00:09:59.13 And many of us have appointments with periodontal gum disease 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.35 just because of the fact that we're not practicing 00:10:02.38\00:10:04.28 good, oral hygiene. 00:10:04.31\00:10:05.87 So let's say we've taken care of the gum problems... 00:10:05.90\00:10:08.11 We're brushing our teeth well... We're eating good food. 00:10:08.15\00:10:10.33 We're staying away from refined carbohydrates. 00:10:10.36\00:10:12.79 We're staying away from free fats, and so we've got a 00:10:12.82\00:10:15.85 good circulatory system. 00:10:15.86\00:10:17.11 The Bible says "the life is in the blood. " 00:10:17.14\00:10:19.58 We've got good life, but for some reason, 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.07 we've gotten in a way of a germ, a virus or something 00:10:22.10\00:10:26.29 and we've gotten a sore throat. 00:10:26.32\00:10:27.46 What can we do for a sore throat? 00:10:27.49\00:10:29.23 Some very simple things... 00:10:29.26\00:10:30.80 1. We can gargle with salt water, or just warm water. 00:10:30.83\00:10:33.90 Warm water will help... Salt water just a little bit better 00:10:33.93\00:10:37.56 What I like to do if I have a sore throat, is I'll take a 00:10:37.59\00:10:41.44 charcoal tablet. 00:10:41.47\00:10:43.44 I'll take usually 2 to 4 of them at nighttime 00:10:43.47\00:10:46.01 before I go to bed. 00:10:46.04\00:10:47.14 I'll put them back between my cheek and my gums 00:10:47.17\00:10:49.60 before sticking down in there 00:10:49.63\00:10:51.84 and work them down there real good. 00:10:51.87\00:10:53.26 They're not going to jump down your throat. 00:10:53.29\00:10:54.55 They're not going to fall out on your pillow. 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.14 They'll just stay there all night long, 00:10:56.17\00:10:58.35 but as you sleep, and you're salivating the whole night long, 00:10:58.36\00:11:02.01 you're going to be putting a small trickle of charcoal down 00:11:02.04\00:11:05.86 your throat and that itself, will take up inflammation. 00:11:05.89\00:11:08.98 You can also do something that we'd like to call 00:11:09.01\00:11:12.01 a "horse collar"... if you're hoarse, or you've got a 00:11:12.02\00:11:15.14 sore throat, you can take something as simple as a 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.90 horse collar, which is nothing more than a piece of felt 00:11:17.93\00:11:22.24 It's made quite nicely. 00:11:22.27\00:11:23.40 Our students made a number of these 00:11:23.41\00:11:25.11 at Uchee Pines a few years ago. 00:11:25.14\00:11:26.76 We put these in cold water and then wring it out 00:11:26.79\00:11:30.59 and then wrap this horse collar around your neck 00:11:30.62\00:11:33.49 And then once it around your neck, 00:11:33.50\00:11:35.71 you take a heavier piece of material... 00:11:35.74\00:11:38.48 ...this one's been made very nice with Velcro... 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.86 We put that around the neck on top of wet felt and it will 00:11:40.89\00:11:46.53 hold it in place... we do that overnight. 00:11:46.56\00:11:48.91 This is bringing... it started off cold but immediately 00:11:48.92\00:11:51.66 it starts bringing heat into the area... which is going to 00:11:51.69\00:11:54.63 fight the infection. 00:11:54.66\00:11:55.82 It's going to bring heat... It's going to bring nutrients... 00:11:55.83\00:11:58.34 It's going to bring oxygen... 00:11:58.37\00:11:59.82 It's going to bring ALL the things that we need... 00:11:59.85\00:12:01.68 And I have found many times, that this simple treatment 00:12:01.71\00:12:04.41 alone, will shortstop a sore throat. 00:12:04.44\00:12:06.61 So let's say you've got the sore throat 00:12:06.64\00:12:07.97 first thing in the morning... 00:12:08.00\00:12:09.06 You don't want to walk around with this thing 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.49 around your neck... well, get yourself a turtleneck sweater 00:12:11.52\00:12:13.79 ...put the turtleneck sweater on in place of this outside one 00:12:13.82\00:12:17.75 and put this underneath, and you'll be fighting a sore throat 00:12:17.78\00:12:21.55 all day long and no one will ever be the wiser. 00:12:21.58\00:12:24.61 There's something else we can do... 00:12:24.64\00:12:26.05 and I'm going to ask Melissa Thrash and 00:12:26.06\00:12:28.71 Shannon Jenkins to come and we're going demonstrate, 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.77 or they're going to demonstrate something simple like 00:12:30.80\00:12:33.28 a hot foot bath... which is a marvelous treatment for 00:12:33.31\00:12:35.94 sore throats, head congestion and lots of other things... 00:12:35.97\00:12:38.52 So, I'm going to turn it over to you, Melissa... 00:12:38.55\00:12:40.39 Okay, Shannon will you get up on the table... 00:12:40.42\00:12:46.57 Okay, first what you're going to do is, you're going to get a 00:12:46.60\00:12:49.47 basin of warm water... not really not right now, 00:12:49.50\00:12:52.23 just maybe 100-101 degrees, so it won't burn anybody. 00:12:52.26\00:12:58.48 And first test to see if the patient can handle the water 00:12:58.51\00:13:02.10 by putting their heels in the water, 00:13:02.13\00:13:03.74 and if it's okay, then you can put their feet 00:13:03.75\00:13:05.63 all the way into the water, and you're going to want to 00:13:05.66\00:13:08.77 start warming the water up. 00:13:08.80\00:13:10.03 So you can put their feet over to one side of the basin, 00:13:10.06\00:13:12.84 and you can add warm water until the water is maybe 00:13:12.87\00:13:16.38 106-110 degrees depending on how hot they can handle the water 00:13:16.41\00:13:20.82 And you're going to leave the feet in the basin of hot water 00:13:20.85\00:13:24.29 for maybe 1/2 an hour, and you can check the water temperature 00:13:24.32\00:13:30.49 by a little bath thermometer like this... to make sure that 00:13:30.52\00:13:33.47 you know that you're not getting it too hot 00:13:33.50\00:13:36.04 Where do you buy these little thermometers? 00:13:36.07\00:13:39.00 I can tell you where I bought this one... Okay 00:13:39.03\00:13:40.85 ...at a drugstore... You can also get these at 00:13:40.88\00:13:43.89 at health food stores, and sometimes at feed stores 00:13:43.92\00:13:49.11 indoor/outdoor thermometers, and they can be very nicely used 00:13:49.14\00:13:53.52 This thermometer is very helpful to check your temperature. 00:13:53.55\00:13:57.36 But then as you did it for Shannon, 00:13:57.39\00:14:00.34 just making it warm at first, and then building it up so 00:14:00.37\00:14:03.24 that it's hot, that's a good method too... 00:14:03.27\00:14:04.89 without using a thermometer. Yes 00:14:04.92\00:14:06.80 Often it's really nice to keep them well-hydrated by 00:14:06.83\00:14:10.36 giving them water to drink and by keeping their head cool 00:14:10.39\00:14:13.67 ...that will help them not get a headache 00:14:13.70\00:14:15.26 Some people tend to get headaches from this. 00:14:15.29\00:14:17.38 And when you're done, what you're going to do is 00:14:17.41\00:14:19.33 you're going to lift their feet up out of the water 00:14:19.36\00:14:21.17 and you're going to pour some ice cold water over their feet 00:14:21.20\00:14:25.90 Oh boy! Yeah... it will feel very shocking. 00:14:25.93\00:14:28.80 And then have a towel ready underneath, so that you can 00:14:28.83\00:14:32.61 friction their feet dry when you're done 00:14:32.64\00:14:38.61 Now the friction draws more blood into the feet... 00:14:38.64\00:14:41.36 That's right... And you want to draw the blood 00:14:41.39\00:14:43.46 into the feet so that it makes a sort of pumping action 00:14:43.49\00:14:46.92 away from the throat, down to the feet, 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.39 then the throat gets a little irritated again and 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.99 draws it back and puts it back down, and so it sort of is 00:14:52.00\00:14:55.32 going like this... all the time 00:14:55.33\00:14:57.40 A man named "Kellogg" checked the temperature 00:14:57.41\00:15:01.07 under one of these horse collars and found that 00:15:01.10\00:15:05.34 the temperature was going up and down all night long 00:15:05.37\00:15:07.93 while the person was doing this... 00:15:07.96\00:15:10.12 And after a friction rub, after a hot foot bath, 00:15:10.15\00:15:15.18 this makes most people feel very good in the throat 00:15:15.21\00:15:21.09 They may even feel, right away, that the sore throat 00:15:21.12\00:15:24.85 is much better... and indeed it is healing. 00:15:24.88\00:15:28.53 So thank you very much... You're welcome. 00:15:28.56\00:15:29.78 That was a very good demonstration. 00:15:29.81\00:15:31.57 So simple to do... even noticed that even fully dressed, 00:15:31.60\00:15:37.43 Shannon could just have run into the bathroom, put her feet 00:15:37.46\00:15:39.95 in the bathtub with the water just coming into the 00:15:39.98\00:15:45.66 bathtub or with the basin set in the bathtub 00:15:45.69\00:15:48.93 and it would have been just as effective. 00:15:48.96\00:15:51.67 And so, we can do this within minutes 00:15:51.70\00:15:54.30 ...we can already have the hot foot bath in motion 00:15:54.33\00:15:59.15 Now something else we can do for ourselves in the home 00:15:59.18\00:16:04.15 is something with this little zapper... 00:16:04.18\00:16:07.32 These zappers can be purchased from most any 00:16:07.35\00:16:11.17 sporting goods places where they sell materials for hiking 00:16:11.20\00:16:19.84 and being out in the wild 00:16:19.87\00:16:21.72 And this one is just a very simple thing... 00:16:21.75\00:16:25.29 It creates its own spark and it sparks over and over 00:16:25.32\00:16:28.30 so it doesn't have to depend on batteries or anything. 00:16:28.33\00:16:31.12 There's a little punch-down at one end, so that you can 00:16:31.15\00:16:34.68 make the spark. 00:16:34.71\00:16:36.37 So I will show you how this spark goes. 00:16:36.40\00:16:38.65 And I'm hoping that you will be able to see it. 00:16:38.68\00:16:41.41 It just makes a little spark... see that little spark 00:16:41.44\00:16:47.47 It just keeps generating a spark, and you can just 00:16:47.50\00:16:50.98 continue to make it spark, and it will spark right on and on. 00:16:51.01\00:16:55.43 And so, if you have a spider bite, or a fire ant bite, 00:16:55.44\00:16:59.47 or even a snake bite, any kind of venomous bite 00:16:59.50\00:17:04.24 that you have, you can just put this right on the skin 00:17:04.27\00:17:09.39 and it doesn't really hurt, so you just do this but, 00:17:09.42\00:17:13.89 you can notice that it does make a little jump in my finger 00:17:13.92\00:17:17.49 See how it really makes a little spark... 00:17:17.52\00:17:22.57 just as static electricity will. 00:17:22.60\00:17:25.21 And so, for something like a spider bite, 00:17:25.24\00:17:28.68 you might put this spark on it for 20, 30, 40 times 00:17:28.71\00:17:34.11 For a fire ant bite, sometimes I will get 10 or 20 at one time. 00:17:34.14\00:17:39.44 And so I just treat them all with about 15 or 20 zaps 00:17:39.47\00:17:44.37 and then many times, I will not even get the little sterile 00:17:44.40\00:17:48.86 abscess that comes from the venom that these little 00:17:48.89\00:17:53.77 creatures like to inject into your skin. 00:17:53.80\00:17:57.25 They're not very pleasant people... the little ants. 00:17:57.28\00:18:01.40 They may once have been when the Bible spoke of these 00:18:01.43\00:18:04.54 little people, but they are no longer pleasant, 00:18:04.57\00:18:06.82 not the fire ants! 00:18:06.85\00:18:08.02 Now another thing that is a venomous bite that 00:18:08.03\00:18:11.08 you need to be prepared for in the home, 00:18:11.11\00:18:12.87 if you live in a place that's infested with snakes 00:18:12.90\00:18:16.89 is a snakebite kit. 00:18:16.92\00:18:18.91 Now, we so rarely ever see a snake at Uchee Pines, 00:18:18.94\00:18:21.90 it's almost a call all the neighbors to come to see 00:18:21.93\00:18:25.35 But we do have snakebite kits and I have 2 here 00:18:25.38\00:18:30.86 And these snakebite kits come with the instructions 00:18:30.89\00:18:34.69 in them... it's simply an extractor like this... 00:18:34.72\00:18:38.17 And this works somewhat like a syringe that you just 00:18:38.20\00:18:41.76 pull back like that. 00:18:41.77\00:18:43.20 And it has various sizes of extractors, 00:18:43.23\00:18:48.72 and I will use the very largest one, 00:18:48.75\00:18:50.66 but if you have a smaller area, you could use the smaller size 00:18:50.69\00:18:55.59 So you just fix the little extractor cup like this 00:18:55.62\00:18:59.69 and put it on the area where the snake has bitten 00:18:59.70\00:19:04.04 and then you just pull back like this, 00:19:04.07\00:19:06.37 and it has quite a good bit of suction. 00:19:06.40\00:19:08.95 So you get about 30 cc of suction here, 00:19:08.98\00:19:12.82 and if you could hold it against the skin and do that, 00:19:12.85\00:19:16.81 you could see that it would, indeed, make quite a suction 00:19:16.84\00:19:20.73 for the person and some people like to cut, 00:19:20.74\00:19:24.78 but I've told that that is not very much help. 00:19:24.81\00:19:27.73 So what I think might be helpful is to do this 00:19:27.76\00:19:30.78 little suction and pull the venom back out into the skin 00:19:30.81\00:19:35.07 and then zap it. 00:19:35.10\00:19:36.08 Now they have not only this kind of zapper, 00:19:36.11\00:19:38.55 but bigger ones too and the bigger ones can be used to 00:19:38.58\00:19:42.47 zap a snakebite. 00:19:42.50\00:19:44.23 And what I would do, is to zap it while you're on the way 00:19:44.26\00:19:47.79 to getting professional help... 00:19:47.82\00:19:50.43 Because, of course, with anything as serious as a 00:19:50.46\00:19:54.01 seriously venomous snakebite, you will need professional help. 00:19:54.04\00:19:59.20 This is definitely first aid for that. 00:19:59.23\00:20:01.12 Now for something like a fire ant bite of course you could use 00:20:01.15\00:20:04.24 this and feel that it was definitive. 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.45 Now here, I have something else... 00:20:06.48\00:20:09.84 This is a fluid that you can make easily from 00:20:09.87\00:20:15.31 just vinegar and myrrh and calendula 00:20:15.34\00:20:19.19 It is for afflictions of the nails, and also for 00:20:19.22\00:20:25.05 skin infections with a fungus. 00:20:25.08\00:20:27.74 And it just gives a little fluid like this, and you just 00:20:27.77\00:20:32.14 squirt something like this and just smear that 00:20:32.17\00:20:37.05 on the place where the person has some kind of fungus 00:20:37.08\00:20:41.08 growth, and they will, if you do that several times a day, 00:20:41.11\00:20:44.80 the first day and then twice a day thereafter, 00:20:44.83\00:20:47.11 usually if it's on a protected part of the body, 00:20:47.14\00:20:51.26 such as on the back, or even on the feet, 00:20:51.29\00:20:54.16 then twice a day is probably enough. 00:20:54.19\00:20:57.42 And something like vinegar, calendula and myrrh 00:20:57.45\00:21:01.41 will do fine. 00:21:01.44\00:21:02.46 If you'd like a recipe for that, if you will check into 00:21:02.49\00:21:06.63 our website at www. 3ABN.org 00:21:06.66\00:21:13.18 the website for 3ABN will have a link to Uchee Pines 00:21:13.21\00:21:20.53 website and you can find the recipe of how to make that. 00:21:20.56\00:21:28.63 Now some people have a problem with dry mouth... 00:21:28.66\00:21:32.48 And for that, they can get some kind of lubricating jelly 00:21:32.49\00:21:35.63 such as this... which you can buy at a pharmacy 00:21:35.66\00:21:38.98 And just a little bit of it on the finger and rubbed on the 00:21:39.01\00:21:42.75 tongue, can often give the person several hours 00:21:42.78\00:21:47.57 of freedom from the really unpleasant sensation 00:21:47.60\00:21:52.45 of being uncomfortably dry in the mouth. 00:21:52.49\00:21:56.69 Now, at this time, Don Miller is going to 00:21:56.73\00:22:00.90 talk with you again about some of this potpourri 00:22:00.93\00:22:05.36 of small remedies. Don Miller 00:22:05.39\00:22:08.31 I want to re-visit, just for a minute, 00:22:08.34\00:22:09.99 your serpentarium... Okay? All right 00:22:10.02\00:22:11.68 The snakes! It was interesting, I was in Zambia some time ago 00:22:11.71\00:22:17.22 and they were telling me that, you know, we're really having 00:22:17.25\00:22:20.69 a lot of black mambas and cobras right now... 00:22:20.72\00:22:22.81 and, of course, the first thought is... 00:22:22.84\00:22:24.51 "Oh, those are some pretty serious snakes!" 00:22:24.54\00:22:27.17 To comfort me, they said, "No problem, we've got 00:22:27.20\00:22:30.81 lots of charcoal on hand. " 00:22:30.84\00:22:32.33 So that's one treatment for snakebites that I 00:22:32.36\00:22:35.27 really agree with. 00:22:35.30\00:22:36.52 They did tell me that there was no antivenin there, 00:22:36.55\00:22:39.78 and if someone did get bitten by a snake, 00:22:39.81\00:22:41.94 and there were no zappers, or bloodsuckers... 00:22:41.97\00:22:44.89 these other types of things, we would apply 00:22:44.92\00:22:47.61 heavy charcoal poultices or complete charcoal immersions 00:22:47.62\00:22:51.17 and then transport them to a hospital, or a clinic 00:22:51.20\00:22:54.56 where they would have the antivenin, 00:22:54.59\00:22:56.46 and that is very good treatment that I would choose. 00:22:56.49\00:23:00.63 Other things you find, around the home, 00:23:00.66\00:23:03.38 you find down the street, you find around the world, 00:23:03.39\00:23:05.58 for things like wounds and infections... we all get them. 00:23:05.61\00:23:08.59 Sometimes we cut our finger, we step on something 00:23:08.62\00:23:11.56 and we've got a wound... What do you do? 00:23:11.59\00:23:13.46 I would recommend that each one of you find an organization 00:23:13.47\00:23:18.12 in your community that presents a good first aid course. 00:23:18.15\00:23:21.65 I know the American Red Cross... 00:23:21.68\00:23:22.91 I'm an American Red Cross first aid and CPR instructor. 00:23:22.94\00:23:27.03 How to do these simple things... 00:23:27.06\00:23:29.05 But there are some really basic things. 00:23:29.08\00:23:31.09 1. If you've wounded yourself, if you make sure that you 00:23:31.12\00:23:34.40 remove yourself from the area where you wounded yourself, 00:23:34.43\00:23:37.37 the possibility exists that you will continue wounding yourself. 00:23:37.40\00:23:42.28 I once cut off the tips of my fingers with a table saw 00:23:42.31\00:23:45.55 and the first thing I did was to turn off the table saw. 00:23:45.58\00:23:48.88 And get away from that table saw because, you know, 00:23:48.91\00:23:51.52 if you get woozy and you fall down, 00:23:51.55\00:23:52.82 you might really have a problem on your hands... 00:23:52.85\00:23:55.08 besides the fact that you're missing a couple of digits. 00:23:55.11\00:23:57.58 And so, those are the nice things to do... is watch the 00:23:57.61\00:24:01.52 area and make sure you're not going to re-injure yourself. 00:24:01.55\00:24:03.61 2. You've got to protect your wounded area, 00:24:03.64\00:24:06.17 and you've got to clean your wounded area. 00:24:06.20\00:24:08.29 And, the best way to do that is with flushing water. 00:24:08.30\00:24:11.60 Get the water in there and flush it out. 00:24:11.63\00:24:13.71 If you can get some hydrogen peroxide, that's also very good. 00:24:13.74\00:24:16.95 It's good to do it under pressure sometimes. 00:24:16.96\00:24:19.44 If you can have a bulb syringe, you can sit there and 00:24:19.47\00:24:22.57 jet it in there... a Waterpik 00:24:22.60\00:24:25.04 I've used something as simple as a water bottle. 00:24:25.07\00:24:28.07 Just take the water bottle with water in there, 00:24:28.10\00:24:29.97 and turn it upside-down and just squeeze real hard 00:24:30.00\00:24:32.24 to get a good jet of water in the wound to clean it. 00:24:32.27\00:24:35.69 ...Because cleaning is fundamental. 00:24:35.72\00:24:37.96 What I would do, then, if I had it, I would apply some 00:24:37.99\00:24:41.03 tea tree oil to a dry, sterile dressing. 00:24:41.06\00:24:44.34 And if I don't have that, I'd put, first of all, 00:24:44.37\00:24:47.26 just a dry, sterile dressing over my wound 00:24:47.29\00:24:50.67 to protect it from outside pathogens because quite frankly, 00:24:50.70\00:24:55.04 this is our first line of defense against infection. 00:24:55.07\00:24:58.01 It's our skin.. I'm thankful for my skin, 00:24:58.04\00:25:00.48 but as soon as I violate this skin, as soon as I open 00:25:00.51\00:25:03.80 the skin up, everything around wants to get in there 00:25:03.83\00:25:06.60 and mess up my body... 00:25:06.63\00:25:08.15 so we want to protect it as soon as possible. 00:25:08.18\00:25:10.68 We want to make sure we are changing the dressing 00:25:10.71\00:25:13.47 at least on a daily basis. 00:25:13.50\00:25:15.52 And, once it's starting to heal, 00:25:15.55\00:25:18.58 if you happen to get an infection, 00:25:18.61\00:25:20.17 I will slap a charcoal poultice on that thing in no time 00:25:20.20\00:25:23.62 because a charcoal poultice will help take up infections. 00:25:23.65\00:25:26.46 And so you keep it sterile, you keep it clean, 00:25:26.49\00:25:30.11 you keep it protected. 00:25:30.14\00:25:31.42 And what I like to do sometimes, when the sun is shining, 00:25:31.45\00:25:34.20 I like to expose it to the sunshine, because 00:25:34.23\00:25:37.03 the sunlight has a natural effect on killing bacteria 00:25:37.06\00:25:41.96 and other types of pathogens that may be on our skin 00:25:41.99\00:25:44.53 ...So we want to get that in there, and we want to keep 00:25:44.56\00:25:46.84 ourselves well-hydrated and eat very healthfully, 00:25:46.85\00:25:50.33 because as soon as we violate this part of our body, 00:25:50.36\00:25:52.85 we're open to have things going all through our body 00:25:52.88\00:25:55.73 So, if we keep our body strong, our immune system is going 00:25:55.76\00:25:58.67 right there... stay away from sugar, stay away from sweets 00:25:58.70\00:26:01.55 so that our immune system is operating 100%, 00:26:01.58\00:26:03.96 and we should pretty much be able to 00:26:03.99\00:26:06.46 get away from this problem. 00:26:06.49\00:26:07.83 And, there are other nice herbs... we can put some 00:26:07.87\00:26:10.60 goldenseal; we can put some Echinacea on it 00:26:10.63\00:26:12.63 poultices... we can use some aloe vera 00:26:12.66\00:26:15.37 Simple things... God has given us simple things 00:26:15.40\00:26:18.08 and I suggest we go out there and use those things 00:26:18.11\00:26:20.32 and we might be a whole lot 00:26:20.35\00:26:21.92 better for the exercise, Dr. Thrash 00:26:21.95\00:26:23.88 Yes, those are certainly very good suggestions. 00:26:23.91\00:26:27.25 One more thing that I might mention... 00:26:27.28\00:26:30.74 and that is the use of something like 00:26:30.77\00:26:33.45 petroleum jelly for eczema. 00:26:33.48\00:26:36.08 I think it's one of the very best treatments for that 00:26:36.11\00:26:39.17 and all you have to do is just to take a little lump 00:26:39.20\00:26:41.89 of petroleum jelly such as this and some water 00:26:41.92\00:26:45.68 and usually this can be done right after you have washed 00:26:45.71\00:26:48.92 your hands and your hands are still wet with the water 00:26:48.95\00:26:52.21 of washing your hand 00:26:52.24\00:26:53.35 And then, you just put this there and with a motion 00:26:53.38\00:26:57.18 like this, as rapidly as you can do, 00:26:57.19\00:27:00.31 you make sort of a milk... 00:27:00.34\00:27:02.54 You see, this looks a trifle milky. 00:27:02.57\00:27:04.69 And then it's spread on the area where you have 00:27:04.72\00:27:07.76 the eczema, in the direction of the skin lines 00:27:07.79\00:27:11.36 Now you know the skin lines go across here 00:27:11.39\00:27:14.46 In other parts of the body, they take another direction 00:27:14.49\00:27:17.23 but whichever direction they go, you always put it in the 00:27:17.26\00:27:20.88 direction of the skin lines... 00:27:20.91\00:27:22.78 Because if you pull like this, then you may open up 00:27:22.79\00:27:26.74 these little skin lines, and with eczema, 00:27:26.77\00:27:29.39 that can cause a problem. 00:27:29.42\00:27:31.44 Because the opening up of the skin lines 00:27:31.47\00:27:34.20 is what keeps eczema going. 00:27:34.23\00:27:36.82 It may not have caused it, but it does keep it going. 00:27:36.85\00:27:39.84 Now I hope from this potpourri of things of small remedies, 00:27:39.87\00:27:44.38 that you can get the idea that our Heavenly Father has 00:27:44.41\00:27:47.95 provided for us in many different ways, 00:27:47.98\00:27:50.69 and every day, we should thank the Lord for all these 00:27:50.72\00:27:53.95 very simple remedies. 00:27:55.14\00:27:56.14
