"Ah, this is a light, clean 00:02:39.67\00:02:42.88 airy, sweet-smelling, sunny place. " 00:02:42.91\00:02:47.14 And, of course, your sweet disposition in the kitchen 00:02:47.17\00:02:50.34 is the most sunny and neat thing about the kitchen. 00:02:50.37\00:02:55.86 So, the first thing to aim at is being of sunny disposition. 00:02:55.89\00:03:01.24 Now, sometimes for some reason, it might be desirable 00:03:01.27\00:03:06.18 not to eat at home... Don Miller 00:03:21.64\00:03:23.63 Well, if all you say about our own kitchens 00:03:23.66\00:03:27.07 being light and airy and not even having last week's mail... 00:03:27.10\00:03:29.85 I've got last year's mail still sitting around my kitchen. 00:03:29.88\00:03:32.35 Ahh! I'm going to have to make an inspection tour. 00:03:32.38\00:03:34.90 Maybe that would help me! That might help me a lot. 00:03:34.93\00:03:37.70 Inspection tours are very important for restaurants... 00:03:37.71\00:03:40.23 ...talking about the eating out thing. 00:03:40.24\00:03:42.51 It's important that we know where we are eating 00:03:42.54\00:03:45.61 and what we are eating. 00:03:45.64\00:03:46.92 I once worked in a food preparation facility 00:03:46.93\00:03:50.50 back in the area where the food was prepared 00:03:50.53\00:03:53.64 And I remember one day, I was opening a large #10 can 00:03:53.67\00:03:57.03 which are quite large and they had this MONSTER of a can opener 00:03:57.06\00:04:00.81 that sort of went down and sort of GLEEPED the lid off 00:04:00.84\00:04:04.37 And I was doing this and I sat it on a counter 00:04:04.40\00:04:08.38 and it started to fall and I reached for the can 00:04:08.41\00:04:10.90 and my hand went inside... 00:04:10.93\00:04:13.29 And it was just as the can fell off the counter, 00:04:13.32\00:04:16.41 and as it went down, it took the skin off my fingers 00:04:16.44\00:04:19.50 My thumb... I still have the scars on my thumb 00:04:19.53\00:04:22.29 and on my other finger and one on my other fingers 00:04:22.32\00:04:24.12 And... it took a lot of skin and I bled a lot of blood. 00:04:24.15\00:04:28.16 And, it was ketchup that I was working with at the time 00:04:28.19\00:04:30.86 and I had a lot to do... and this has been many years ago, 00:04:30.89\00:04:33.75 so don't worry about eating out today... 00:04:33.78\00:04:36.10 But I had to keep working. 00:04:36.13\00:04:37.85 There was no one else to take my job. 00:04:37.88\00:04:39.37 and I'm afraid a few of my body fluids went out 00:04:39.40\00:04:43.36 with the dinner that day. 00:04:43.39\00:04:45.33 And I don't know but that might not be the case sometimes. 00:04:45.36\00:04:48.44 We've all heard our own horror stories about 00:04:48.47\00:04:50.83 how the cooks back there might have a competition 00:04:50.86\00:04:55.75 going with each other, or just try to amuse each other 00:04:55.78\00:04:59.04 with putting strange things into the food. 00:04:59.07\00:05:01.07 And so, it's important that we are aware of the reputability 00:05:01.10\00:05:05.84 of the restaurants, or the kitchens from which we eat. 00:05:05.88\00:05:09.05 Cleanliness is very important in what we're eating... 00:05:09.08\00:05:12.41 And you know, they're finding right now... 00:05:12.44\00:05:14.43 in the salad bars... 00:05:14.47\00:05:16.18 Now sometimes I used to go the steakhouses which have 00:05:16.73\00:05:21.37 wonderful salad bars and you go in there and you got all 00:05:21.41\00:05:23.77 this lettuce and tomatoes and all these different things 00:05:23.81\00:05:26.14 But you know, they're finding E. coli bacteria now in 00:05:26.17\00:05:29.43 some of the items on there... 00:05:29.44\00:05:31.44 which can come from 2 different areas... 00:05:31.47\00:05:33.70 #1.. Whoever back at the farm picked it 00:05:33.74\00:05:35.94 #2.. Whoever back in the kitchen cut it up 00:05:35.97\00:05:39.74 #3.. The last person who decided they didn't want that much 00:05:39.77\00:05:42.78 and put it back into the container. 00:05:42.81\00:05:45.22 And so now, we're finding E. coli bacteria 00:05:45.25\00:05:47.58 in things that should not have E. coli bacteria in them. 00:05:47.61\00:05:51.29 Plus, if you are REALLY careful with your diet... 00:05:51.32\00:05:54.17 which I try to be... try to be a straight vegetarian 00:05:54.20\00:05:57.32 and a strict vegetarian... 00:05:57.35\00:05:58.75 I don't want all these other things in there 00:05:58.78\00:06:01.07 But, you'll see sometimes, dribbled across 00:06:01.10\00:06:04.18 things you're going to put in your salad... 00:06:04.21\00:06:06.28 You got some egg things. 00:06:06.31\00:06:07.58 And you got some cheese things. 00:06:07.62\00:06:09.15 And you got some bacon things. 00:06:09.16\00:06:10.86 And so it's best to leave off those things 00:06:10.89\00:06:14.03 and not get into letting other people decide what 00:06:14.06\00:06:17.46 you're going to eat because of their uncleanliness, 00:06:17.49\00:06:20.12 untidiness, or just the fact that they just drop things a lot 00:06:20.15\00:06:23.76 And so it's very important to stay away from the foods 00:06:23.79\00:06:27.24 that you're not really too sure. 00:06:27.27\00:06:28.98 Go to some of these restaurants where you're putting together 00:06:29.01\00:06:32.37 I used to go to a place to just get bean burritos... 00:06:32.38\00:06:34.74 No cheese, no hot sauce, please. 00:06:34.77\00:06:36.79 That was my order all the time. 00:06:36.82\00:06:38.67 Well you look in there and they are pulling things out with 00:06:38.70\00:06:42.22 their hands and sticking it on there... 00:06:42.25\00:06:44.25 And so the same hand that's now putting lettuce... 00:06:44.28\00:06:46.61 ...just lettuce on yours, just put everything else 00:06:46.64\00:06:49.09 in the world on the last person's 00:06:49.12\00:06:50.44 So whatever is left onto their little rubber glove, 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.25 is now on your particular burrito or whatever it is. 00:06:53.28\00:06:56.89 I'm always amazed too... and amused... 00:06:56.92\00:07:00.00 I go into a restaurant, if I go into a restaurant anymore... 00:07:00.03\00:07:03.70 and I go into the bathrooms... 00:07:03.73\00:07:05.94 and there's always that sign... proudly displayed 00:07:05.97\00:07:08.71 "OUR EMPLOYEES WASH THEIR HANDS BEFORE THEY LEAVE THIS ROOM" 00:07:08.74\00:07:14.14 And I think, Well, that's really good... and so I wash 00:07:14.17\00:07:15.83 my hands too... then I walk up to the door 00:07:15.84\00:07:18.71 and the ONLY way out is to reach down and grab the door 00:07:18.72\00:07:22.10 and pull it open. 00:07:22.13\00:07:23.68 Now, I've washed my hands... 00:07:23.71\00:07:26.33 As a matter of fact, if you ever see me doing it... 00:07:26.36\00:07:27.84 I'm taking out a handkerchief, or I'm using my shirttail 00:07:27.87\00:07:30.80 and I'm grabbing that door and opening it up because 00:07:30.83\00:07:32.94 the last 12 people did NOT wash their hands and they touched 00:07:32.97\00:07:37.12 that doorknob or that little handle, 00:07:37.15\00:07:39.16 and they pulled it open and left whatever they want to 00:07:39.19\00:07:41.95 on that particular thing... 00:07:41.98\00:07:42.99 And so the worker who just washed their hands 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.78 now has picked it up from the door handles 00:07:44.81\00:07:47.63 ...So I'm not really comforted by the fact that the 00:07:47.66\00:07:51.33 workers are washing their hands. 00:07:51.36\00:07:53.13 I would rather they wash it back in their own place, 00:07:53.16\00:07:55.57 very clean, sort of like a surgeon... scrub em up and 00:07:55.60\00:07:58.74 put on their rubber gloves before they go handling 00:07:58.77\00:08:01.33 the food that I'm going to eat. So what do I do? 00:08:01.37\00:08:03.52 There are a couple of choices about eating out... 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.45 #1... I can go to a grocery store. 00:08:05.48\00:08:08.25 I like to carry with me, when I'm traveling, 00:08:08.28\00:08:10.68 a plastic soap bottle with just a little bit of soap and a 00:08:10.71\00:08:14.57 bunch of water... basically just some soapy water 00:08:14.58\00:08:17.51 and I can squirt that on an apple I've just bought 00:08:17.54\00:08:20.57 or whatever else and I can scrub it up really nicely 00:08:20.60\00:08:23.25 and rinse it off in some water I can find somewhere... 00:08:23.28\00:08:25.42 I always carry drinking water. 00:08:25.45\00:08:27.20 And I can eat it because I have washed it, not somebody else. 00:08:27.23\00:08:31.50 Another thing you'll find in these salad bars... 00:08:31.53\00:08:36.31 is they will put certain products on there... 00:08:36.34\00:08:39.69 Certain chemicals to make them look fresh all day. 00:08:39.72\00:08:42.61 You know, that lettuce has been laying there 00:08:42.64\00:08:43.74 for the last 5 hours. 00:08:43.77\00:08:45.02 If I leave lettuce laying around my house for the last 5 hours, 00:08:45.05\00:08:48.83 well, it's going to look pretty crummy. 00:08:48.86\00:08:51.50 But they will put different chemicals on there 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.74 which are going to make them look fresh... 00:08:53.77\00:08:55.66 and trouble is, when I INGEST those chemicals, 00:08:55.67\00:08:59.55 they don't make ME look fresh! 00:08:59.58\00:09:01.11 As a matter of fact, they start wearing out my system. 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.37 They get down into my liver which has to detoxify 00:09:03.38\00:09:06.38 all the chemicals, and so my liver gets stressed. 00:09:06.41\00:09:11.77 We have a restaurant in Columbus, Georgia 00:09:11.80\00:09:13.85 that Uchee Pines runs. 00:09:13.88\00:09:16.92 It's called "Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant and 00:09:16.95\00:09:18.93 Health Food Store" 00:09:18.96\00:09:20.67 And you'll find at our restaurant, as in EVERY 00:09:20.70\00:09:25.17 other restaurant in this land, they'll have 00:09:25.20\00:09:28.04 inspectors coming along. 00:09:28.07\00:09:29.85 And they should, I believe by law, they are supposed to 00:09:29.88\00:09:33.06 post the last record of that particular inspection. 00:09:33.07\00:09:36.79 Now we've got one of our inspection sheets 00:09:36.82\00:09:39.95 for our Country Life Restaurant and here's what it looks like... 00:09:39.98\00:09:43.00 You can see on there... you can't really read much 00:09:43.03\00:09:45.08 what it's saying but they write the score... 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.48 very largely on there... Uchee Pines Country Life 00:09:47.51\00:09:50.49 Restaurant gets a "100" 00:09:50.52\00:09:52.09 Now if you can read the small print... 00:09:52.12\00:09:54.52 You would look at this particular form and find 00:09:54.55\00:09:56.94 every other restaurant in Columbus, Georgia 00:09:56.97\00:09:59.13 on there and their score is also listed 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.18 And you'll find some of them are 80, some 70, some 40 00:10:02.21\00:10:05.20 and some get down all the way to zero. 00:10:05.23\00:10:07.93 I know that one time, there was a person marked down 00:10:07.96\00:10:11.44 ...one of their many marks down was there was blood 00:10:11.47\00:10:14.56 on the knife... we don't want to determine whose blood 00:10:14.59\00:10:17.75 that was... but just not a clean place. 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.15 I remember one time, I was in a home and they were 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.06 preparing chicken for a particular feast 00:10:22.09\00:10:25.62 that they were having and the discussion as they were 00:10:25.65\00:10:28.33 preparing the food wasn't so much... What did they do today, 00:10:28.36\00:10:31.36 or what are they going to do tomorrow... 00:10:31.37\00:10:32.82 But the discussion was... How do they sanitize 00:10:32.85\00:10:36.06 their cutting boards when they get done cutting up the chicken. 00:10:36.09\00:10:39.93 And I was amazed to find out that, after they got done with 00:10:39.96\00:10:42.96 this discussion... their intention was 00:10:42.99\00:10:45.41 to eat that chicken! 00:10:45.44\00:10:46.72 Now if I ate that chicken, I would probably get sick. 00:10:46.75\00:10:50.24 And if I got sick, I'd want to call on Melissa Thrash 00:10:50.27\00:10:53.19 to tell me what I could do for my sickness... Melissa 00:10:53.22\00:10:55.93 I get some bad food, bad chicken of all things.. what would I DO? 00:10:55.96\00:11:01.28 Well you could try charcoal! Charcoal? 00:11:01.32\00:11:03.63 Yeah... Okay, I'll show you how to make a charcoal slurry. 00:11:03.66\00:11:06.63 Here we have some charcoal. 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.84 To make a charcoal slurry, it's really easy. 00:11:08.87\00:11:11.24 All you have to do is take some charcoal powder 00:11:11.27\00:11:13.72 and take maybe 1 tablespoon, 2 tablespoons, 4 tablespoons, 00:11:13.73\00:11:17.66 depending on how bad your food poisoning was 00:11:17.69\00:11:19.95 ...and put it into the water and stir it up and 00:11:19.98\00:11:22.83 give the person a straw, or give yourself a straw 00:11:22.86\00:11:25.36 and drink the charcoal. 00:11:25.39\00:11:26.57 BUT, some people are sensitive to charcoal. 00:11:26.60\00:11:29.45 They can't handle charcoal in their stomach. 00:11:29.48\00:11:31.41 So what you can do for them is you can take the charcoal 00:11:31.44\00:11:33.84 and you can put it in the water and you can let it sit 00:11:33.87\00:11:36.54 And the charcoal will do down to the bottom of the glass 00:11:36.57\00:11:39.35 what will be left, will be slurry water. 00:11:39.38\00:11:42.55 And, you can give them a straw and let them drink off the water 00:11:42.58\00:11:46.16 ...and they won't get the charcoal and it won't 00:11:46.19\00:11:48.38 upset their stomach. 00:11:48.41\00:11:49.85 Well let me ask you a question... 00:11:49.88\00:11:51.40 I've got my charcoal... I've got my stomachache, 00:11:51.43\00:11:54.24 I take some... I still got the stomachache 00:11:54.30\00:11:56.69 Can I take some more? Sure... 00:11:56.72\00:11:58.19 You can take as much as you want... 00:11:58.22\00:11:59.58 as often as you want. 00:11:59.61\00:12:00.77 You can't overdose on charcoal... He says, these people if they mess up, 00:12:33.47\00:12:35.75 I'm going to put something in that tree.. that if they burn it 00:12:35.78\00:12:38.82 they'll be some POWER that they really need. 00:12:38.83\00:12:40.67 And we need this for these last days, don't we? Yes 00:12:40.70\00:12:43.34 If I go out to eat, I'm going to take charcoal 00:12:43.37\00:12:45.83 with me from now on... Okay Thank you 00:12:45.86\00:12:48.38 Okay good... You know, charcoal comes 00:12:48.41\00:12:51.24 in many different forms. 00:12:51.27\00:12:52.33 And we should have some of these forms of charcoal in our homes 00:12:52.36\00:12:55.58 because we never know when that time might come when 00:12:55.61\00:12:59.04 we're going to have that event with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, 00:12:59.07\00:13:03.08 food poisoning, chemical poisoning. 00:13:03.11\00:13:06.02 We can have it in the powder form which Melissa used 00:13:06.05\00:13:09.55 to make up this charcoal slurry water 00:13:09.58\00:13:11.46 It's a very light substance. 00:13:11.49\00:13:12.83 We have to be very careful when we use it as far as 00:13:12.86\00:13:14.89 getting it blowing all over the house. 00:13:14.92\00:13:16.69 We can get it in charcoal capsules which is another 00:13:16.72\00:13:20.96 very easy way when your traveling. 00:13:20.99\00:13:22.53 I prefer putting it in the water, but if you're traveling 00:13:22.56\00:13:24.95 that's not an option. 00:13:24.98\00:13:26.60 You can get it in a tablet form. 00:13:26.63\00:13:28.63 I like it in tablets for sore throats. 00:13:28.66\00:13:30.73 I'll take one and I'll put it between my cheek and the gums 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.98 on both sides overnight... that charcoal bathing my throat 00:13:33.01\00:13:36.43 during the night will help relieve the inflammation 00:13:36.46\00:13:39.04 in my throat. 00:13:39.07\00:13:40.18 Of course, most filters will have a charcoal base 00:13:40.21\00:13:45.57 And this one is for an activated carbon insert for a water filter 00:13:45.60\00:13:50.73 And, quite frankly, we're sort of behind the power curve. 00:13:50.76\00:13:53.91 This is a product you can pick up in Korea... 00:13:53.94\00:13:56.64 which is a charcoal compress. 00:13:56.65\00:13:58.92 Already made embedded in the material putting it over a 00:13:58.95\00:14:02.34 venomous bite, any type of a skin irritation... 00:14:02.37\00:14:05.03 wonderful products all over the world. 00:14:05.06\00:14:08.08 And, of course, Dr. Thrash, I think you picked this up 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.44 in Korea a couple of years ago, didn't you? Yes, I did. 00:14:10.45\00:14:12.19 It was a product that was being marketed there, 00:14:12.22\00:14:15.08 and they're going to also market it here in this country, 00:14:15.11\00:14:17.85 so you should be able to look for it in health food stores 00:14:17.86\00:14:21.04 and drug stores in this country... We take these soaps, we wash the hands with it 00:16:02.80\00:16:05.58 And we aren't so very careful because, after all, 00:16:05.61\00:16:07.87 we're using an ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP! 00:16:07.90\00:16:10.16 Well I'd like to sort of burst a bubble here because 00:16:10.19\00:16:12.89 antibacterial soaps are no better in preventing 00:16:12.90\00:16:16.74 hand bacteria, than plain soap. 00:16:16.77\00:16:18.96 That's what it says right here in this research paper 00:16:18.97\00:16:21.53 where they cultured people's hands after they had washed 00:16:21.56\00:16:25.73 the hands with various kinds of soaps. 00:16:25.76\00:16:30.43 Now, about hepatitis... 00:16:30.46\00:16:31.86 As you know, there are MANY different kinds of hepatitis... 00:16:31.89\00:16:34.92 A, B, C, D, E and so forth. 00:16:34.95\00:16:37.25 A... is a filth-borne hepatitis. 00:16:37.28\00:16:41.45 It's passed from one person's gastrointestinal tract 00:16:41.48\00:16:45.54 to another through filth-borne contamination. 00:16:45.57\00:16:50.46 And so, by washing the hands and being very clean, 00:16:50.49\00:16:53.83 one can usually avoid this kind of hepatitis... 00:16:53.86\00:16:57.84 unless it's put in our food and we're eating out 00:16:57.85\00:17:01.25 In which case, we would not be able to protect ourselves. 00:17:01.28\00:17:04.13 Type B... is spread mainly through blood and blood products 00:17:04.16\00:17:09.68 Type C... through blood and body fluids. 00:17:09.71\00:17:13.75 And the type C gives very few or no symptoms... 00:17:13.78\00:17:19.22 Whereas types A and B may give some very serious symptoms. 00:17:19.25\00:17:22.46 They may turn a VERY deep yellow, a sort of golden yellow 00:17:23.32\00:17:27.45 They may also get nausea and vomiting, backache. 00:17:27.48\00:17:32.18 They may have weakness and fatigue and just feel terrible. 00:17:32.21\00:17:36.08 These are some of the signs of... 00:17:36.11\00:17:38.56 And their stools may turn very pale-colored, 00:17:38.59\00:17:42.15 even like pale clay. 00:17:42.18\00:17:44.76 And these individuals are sometimes VERY sick, 00:17:44.79\00:17:48.75 and they may require several weeks of being in bed 00:17:48.78\00:17:51.68 to get over their problem. 00:17:51.69\00:17:53.91 Now is there anything that we can DO for hepatitis 00:17:53.94\00:17:57.82 once we have contracted it? 00:17:57.85\00:17:59.79 Well there are a number of things... 00:17:59.82\00:18:01.36 And I have a report here about silymarin... 00:18:01.37\00:18:03.99 You may have heard of milk thistle which has 00:18:04.02\00:18:09.23 the Latin name of silymarin. 00:18:09.26\00:18:13.35 Silymarin is very helpful for the liver for any kind of 00:18:13.38\00:18:17.52 liver afflictions. 00:18:17.55\00:18:18.92 Now, with liver afflictions, we want to also give them 00:18:18.95\00:18:23.69 hot compresses over the abdomen, over the liver. 00:18:23.72\00:18:27.36 And we may want to give them a special type of diet... 00:18:27.39\00:18:32.56 Maybe liquids, maybe a high carbohydrate, 00:18:32.59\00:18:37.11 not-very-high protein diet. 00:18:37.14\00:18:40.18 Or, we may want to have a totally vegetarian diet... 00:18:40.21\00:18:44.38 that's probably the most favorable for hepatitis. 00:18:44.41\00:18:47.70 And then some exercise. 00:18:47.71\00:18:49.25 There was a time when we put the person with hepatitis 00:18:49.28\00:18:51.79 right down to bed, but after the U.S. Army actually ran their 00:18:51.80\00:18:58.54 hepatitis patients down the road in their experiments 00:18:58.57\00:19:03.74 to see if exercise would help hepatitis... 00:19:03.77\00:19:06.82 And sure enough, those soldiers who were exercised 00:19:06.85\00:19:11.12 ...and I don't think that running is as good as just 00:19:11.15\00:19:13.47 being normally active, around the house and 00:19:13.50\00:19:16.69 around your grounds... 00:19:16.72\00:19:17.93 They did much better than those that were just put to bed 00:19:17.96\00:19:21.53 and kept there for a long time. 00:19:21.56\00:19:23.67 So, we know that there are many things that we can do 00:19:23.70\00:19:27.58 for hepatitis and if you would like to get a full discussion 00:19:27.61\00:19:32.03 of that, if you will just log in on the 3ABN web site 00:19:32.04\00:19:37.00 WWW.3ABN.org 00:19:37.03\00:19:41.80 and then click on LINKS and go to the Uchee Pines link 00:19:41.83\00:19:47.40 Then, you can log in with us and you can find how we 00:19:47.41\00:19:52.63 treat hepatitis with just very natural things 00:19:52.66\00:19:55.71 and we have had some very good success with this. 00:19:55.74\00:19:59.24 Of course with hepatitis C, that's the one that we expect 00:19:59.27\00:20:02.39 is going to slip up on us. 00:20:02.42\00:20:04.01 It doesn't give very many symptoms... 00:20:04.04\00:20:05.67 Sometimes people are totally asymptomatic when they have 00:20:05.70\00:20:08.96 the acute hepatitis. 00:20:08.97\00:20:10.49 They don't even know when they got it. 00:20:10.52\00:20:13.21 But it is sometime later when they develop the 00:20:13.24\00:20:17.79 chronic, active form of it, 00:20:17.82\00:20:20.08 and a fair number of these cases are going to develop 00:20:20.11\00:20:24.43 some serious and life- threatening problem 00:20:24.46\00:20:27.13 like cancer of the liver, or cirrhosis. 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.49 These individuals are prone to do that. 00:20:29.52\00:20:33.48 Now, another form of disease, sort of changing gear a bit... 00:20:33.49\00:20:40.31 is that of the aging, which we call Alzheimer's. 00:20:40.34\00:20:46.22 Aging is something that everybody fears 00:20:46.25\00:20:49.93 ...not because necessarily a person fears getting old, 00:20:49.94\00:20:54.73 but simply because one fears getting sick. 00:20:54.76\00:20:57.26 But I would like to say to you that... just because you get 00:20:57.29\00:20:59.77 old, is no reason why you should get sick! 00:20:59.80\00:21:03.30 Nor is getting old necessarily a reason why you should 00:21:03.33\00:21:07.75 expect that you're going to lose your mind. 00:21:07.78\00:21:10.25 And I think the most frightening thing that we can 00:21:10.28\00:21:12.31 think of is losing the mind as we get older. 00:21:12.32\00:21:15.77 And the older person who gets what we might call 00:21:15.80\00:21:18.97 Alzheimer disease, may get quite agitated, and may have 00:21:19.00\00:21:23.46 quite a serious problem with being difficult to manage. 00:21:23.49\00:21:28.12 So I'd like to show you one of the ways that a person can 00:21:28.15\00:21:33.09 be handled if they are difficult to manage 00:21:33.12\00:21:37.05 And Shannon Jenkins is going to show you that... 00:21:37.08\00:21:39.63 and here is Shannon, who is a Lifestyle educator student 00:21:39.66\00:21:44.83 at Uchee Pines and she has with her, Melissa Thrash, 00:21:44.86\00:21:48.29 and I understand that Melissa is going to be the one who's 00:21:48.32\00:21:52.08 going to get the treatment here. 00:21:52.11\00:21:54.77 We'll say that Melissa is quite agitated, difficult to manage 00:21:54.80\00:21:58.88 and so Shannon is going to try to help her 00:21:58.91\00:22:03.38 to calm down... So what will you do? 00:22:03.42\00:22:04.98 We're going to put a wet sheet pack on her. Oh, very good 00:22:05.02\00:22:09.62 Lay down... You'll want to lay a sheet down lengthwise 00:22:09.65\00:22:14.53 this way so that you'll have enough to wrap around her. 00:22:14.56\00:22:16.79 And, you will need a blanket 00:22:16.82\00:22:20.49 And what you do is, this will be done on bare skin. 00:22:20.52\00:22:24.35 Now what is this? 00:22:24.38\00:22:25.94 This is a sheet... Wet and cold... yes. 00:22:33.30\00:22:36.46 Well that sounds like one of the things 00:22:36.49\00:22:37.97 they did in the Middle Ages. 00:22:38.00\00:22:39.11 Is she going to be ice cold for a long time? 00:22:39.14\00:22:42.41 No, not at all. She will warm up quite quickly. 00:22:42.44\00:22:45.30 Okay, how are you going to do this? 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.01 She raises her arms, and you wrap this around like this 00:22:47.04\00:22:52.83 and tuck this side under the leg 00:22:52.86\00:22:57.54 so that she CAN move her legs when we're all done 00:22:57.57\00:23:00.05 and then tuck it snuggly all the way around here. 00:23:00.08\00:23:04.54 And then you can lower your arms. 00:23:04.57\00:23:07.49 Now, if this patient is agitated and is uncooperative, 00:23:07.52\00:23:11.22 you may need a helper to hold her down while you 00:23:11.25\00:23:14.33 put this wet sheet... Yeah... or she might not lie still. 00:23:14.36\00:23:18.61 Then you wrap this side around. 00:23:18.64\00:23:20.61 This goes ALL the way around to the other side and wraps 00:23:20.62\00:23:23.69 around this leg. Ah ha 00:23:23.72\00:23:25.63 I see... so the idea is to get the wet against her skin 00:23:25.66\00:23:30.18 everywhere... Yes. 00:23:30.21\00:23:32.19 Nice and snug... kind of like a mummy. 00:23:32.22\00:23:35.40 Ah ha... Looks sort of like a mummy. 00:23:35.44\00:23:37.59 And THEN, take a towel and just wrap it around... 00:23:37.62\00:23:42.75 that brings the wet sheet right up against her neck 00:23:42.78\00:23:46.13 and then keeps it from drying out. 00:23:46.16\00:23:50.22 Now you MIGHT ask her reach her hand up there and 00:23:50.25\00:23:53.07 help you... But I can tell you, 00:23:53.10\00:23:55.09 she can't do that... No. 00:23:55.12\00:23:56.63 Because if you wrapped it snuggly enough, 00:23:56.66\00:23:58.47 it does have a slightly restraining influence 00:23:58.50\00:24:02.43 for the patient, which is good. Um hm 00:24:02.44\00:24:05.06 It doesn't encase them in a straight jacket but it is 00:24:05.09\00:24:08.28 slightly restraining... All right then what? 00:24:08.31\00:24:09.60 Then you would take this blanket and 00:24:10.43\00:24:14.08 wrap it around... ALL the way around 00:24:14.11\00:24:17.61 and tuck it in... all the way down 00:24:17.64\00:24:25.33 and then pull the other... 00:24:25.36\00:24:27.10 Now this one is dry... Yes, this one is dry. 00:24:27.13\00:24:30.15 The sheet is the only thing that is wet. 00:24:30.18\00:24:34.77 And just tuck it in and THEN we will lay a blanket 00:24:34.80\00:24:41.41 ALL the way across... 00:24:41.44\00:24:50.91 Just lay it ALL the way over. 00:24:50.92\00:24:51.92 Now this is for the purpose of HOLDING the heat in 00:24:54.37\00:24:57.81 So she's going to warm up quickly and... 00:24:57.84\00:25:00.23 Let's say she says she's still a little chilly... 00:25:00.26\00:25:02.95 Then what can you do? 00:25:02.98\00:25:04.13 Then you can take a hot water bottle, 00:25:04.16\00:25:06.31 put some hot water in it and lay it at her feet 00:25:06.34\00:25:15.29 And that will help to warm up the feet. 00:25:15.32\00:25:18.00 And you cover that back up and it's all up in there with her 00:25:18.03\00:25:21.26 and then she warms up. 00:25:21.29\00:25:23.05 She's smiling, so she must be feeling a lot better. 00:25:23.06\00:25:26.64 Not agitated anymore. 00:25:26.67\00:25:29.07 Did you learn to do all this in the Lifestyle Educator Course 00:25:29.10\00:25:32.91 at Uchee Pines? Very good. 00:25:32.94\00:25:35.15 All right, okay, well you can take Melissa out of that 00:25:35.18\00:25:39.41 and when you take her out, after a hour or 2 or 3, 00:25:39.44\00:25:42.15 they can in for a long time 00:25:42.18\00:25:43.85 And, as long as they feel comfortable and you're with them 00:25:43.88\00:25:47.67 there, they can stay in this. 00:25:47.70\00:25:50.78 And then, at the end of that time, 00:25:50.81\00:25:53.20 you just take them out of it and do a friction dry 00:25:53.23\00:25:56.50 on the skin and let them go to bed and sleep 00:25:56.53\00:26:00.92 for a good little while if they would like to do that, 00:26:00.95\00:26:03.00 or you can take them for a nice walk, 00:26:03.03\00:26:04.55 and that's also very good for the agitated person... 00:26:04.58\00:26:07.63 the one with Alzheimer disease is often agitated. 00:26:07.66\00:26:12.25 And so, there are many things that the 00:26:12.28\00:26:16.26 Alzheimer patient may need... 00:26:16.29\00:26:18.63 Sometimes they wander around at night 00:26:18.66\00:26:21.03 And we have found that if you just take their shoes 00:26:21.07\00:26:23.77 away, so that they can't find their shoes, 00:26:23.80\00:26:25.82 often that will do wonders to make it so that they 00:26:25.85\00:26:29.33 are not able to wander around. 00:26:29.36\00:26:32.24 They don't feel so inclined to wander around. 00:26:32.27\00:26:36.37 And then, we also find that if you will play music 00:26:36.40\00:26:40.52 for them... sometimes they will listen for hours to music 00:26:40.55\00:26:44.54 or to a single sermon tape. 00:26:44.55\00:26:46.25 You have it so that it will continuously play and they will 00:26:46.28\00:26:50.83 sometimes listen to it for hours. 00:26:50.86\00:26:53.18 Another thing that you can do for the Alzheimer's patient 00:26:53.21\00:26:56.22 who is difficult to handle, is to furnish them with a mirror 00:26:56.25\00:27:00.09 and let them talk to themselves in the mirror. 00:27:00.12\00:27:03.35 They often get very agitated just being alone and being 00:27:03.38\00:27:07.91 sorry that they can't participate in things 00:27:07.92\00:27:11.13 and somehow, they know they should be doing something 00:27:11.16\00:27:13.09 but they always do it wrong. 00:27:13.12\00:27:15.59 And so, they get agitated and frustrated with the fact 00:27:15.60\00:27:19.59 that they can't do anything. 00:27:19.62\00:27:21.12 And that they don't have anybody who is close to them 00:27:21.15\00:27:24.49 who can talk with them. 00:27:24.52\00:27:26.13 And so you can, at that point, introduce them 00:27:26.16\00:27:29.27 to the mirror. 00:27:29.30\00:27:30.60 And sometimes by talking to themselves, 00:27:30.63\00:27:32.91 that can be very helpful. 00:27:32.94\00:27:34.80 Now there are Alzheimer's support groups 00:27:34.83\00:27:37.07 and by joining these, you can learn a lot about how 00:27:37.08\00:27:41.32 you can help the Alzheimer's patient 00:27:41.35\00:27:44.24 to tolerate their lives and for you to be able 00:27:44.27\00:27:48.11 to take care of them. 00:27:48.14\00:27:49.18 Depression should not exist in either the Alzheimer's 00:27:49.21\00:27:52.87 patient, or the caretaker. 00:27:52.90\00:27:54.90 And may God bless you richly. 00:27:54.94\00:27:56.91
