Hello, I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.85 from Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:03.86\00:00:05.49 and I want to welcome you to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:05.52\00:00:08.22 Today, we'll be talking about fatigue. 00:00:08.25\00:00:10.87 There are many causes of fatigue, and we won't be able 00:00:10.90\00:00:13.46 to cover them all, but we hope that 00:00:13.49\00:00:15.65 by the end of the program, you'll know a lot more about 00:00:15.69\00:00:18.36 how to keep from getting tired. 00:00:18.40\00:00:19.71 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:41.65\00:00:43.64 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:43.68\00:00:47.19 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:47.22\00:00:51.77 Now of course, there are many causes of fatigue 00:00:51.80\00:00:55.15 in the world today. 00:00:55.18\00:00:57.13 Some of them are caused by physical activity. 00:00:57.16\00:00:59.97 But, as we have in the material that we have to present 00:01:00.00\00:01:03.57 to you today, there are also many causes 00:01:03.60\00:01:06.48 that have to do with metabolism. 00:01:06.49\00:01:08.90 And, some of these you'll be able to deal with... 00:01:08.93\00:01:14.32 And some of them are things that you can work at 00:01:14.35\00:01:17.94 but probably never fully accomplish. 00:01:17.97\00:01:21.06 Now the first one that we would like to talk about 00:01:21.07\00:01:23.31 is that of a chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:01:23.34\00:01:25.52 I suppose if it had more publicity than 00:01:25.55\00:01:29.79 any other type of fatigue, except maybe 00:01:29.82\00:01:32.38 sleep-deprivation fatigue 00:01:32.41\00:01:34.86 And with the chronic fatigue syndrome, there are a number 00:01:34.89\00:01:38.79 of things that you can do. 00:01:38.80\00:01:40.73 And, some of the causes are known to be viruses... 00:01:40.76\00:01:45.36 some causes may be metabolic... 00:01:45.37\00:01:48.28 some may be nutrient deficiencies. 00:01:48.29\00:01:51.52 And we may have time to cover a number of these, 00:01:51.55\00:01:54.47 but I've asked Don Miller if he would talk with you about 00:01:54.50\00:01:58.04 some things having to do with the chronic fatigue syndrome, 00:01:58.05\00:02:00.95 and maybe some things about how he treats chronic fatigue 00:02:00.98\00:02:05.11 This is Don Miller, who is a Lifestyle counselor 00:02:05.14\00:02:08.71 at Uchee Pines... Don Miller 00:02:08.87\00:02:10.66 Okay! First of all, we are very familiar with the term 00:02:10.69\00:02:16.01 chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:02:16.04\00:02:17.30 It seems to be another term they have for it anyway 00:02:17.33\00:02:19.85 is the yuppie disease. 00:02:19.88\00:02:21.56 It seems like it's only made its rise in the last 20 or 30 years 00:02:21.59\00:02:25.18 But as far back as the 1900s, there were some evidences of 00:02:25.21\00:02:30.35 this type of an ailment creeping in society. 00:02:30.38\00:02:34.24 In the 1980s, they sort of linked it somewhat to 00:02:34.27\00:02:37.31 Epstein-Barr virus, but in that link, they find that 00:02:37.32\00:02:41.56 some people with chronic fatigue syndrome, do not have the 00:02:41.59\00:02:45.27 antigen to Epstein-Barr virus... 00:02:45.30\00:02:47.44 and some people who do not have chronic fatigue syndrome, 00:02:47.47\00:02:50.73 do have the Epstein-Barr virus. 00:02:50.76\00:02:52.69 And so, that's not the definitive thing... 00:02:52.72\00:02:55.17 We can't just go in there and say... "We're going to make a 00:02:55.20\00:02:56.83 bullet that shoots just Epstein-Barr," 00:02:56.86\00:02:58.96 because that might not be the problem. 00:02:58.99\00:03:01.22 So there are many different causes, or thought to be 00:03:01.25\00:03:05.51 causes for Epstein-Barr virus, or the chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:03:05.52\00:03:09.26 I think if we knew exactly what caused it, we could probably 00:03:09.29\00:03:12.12 find a solution for it, but we don't know. 00:03:12.15\00:03:14.56 But, as Dr. Thrash already mentioned, it could be 00:03:14.57\00:03:17.12 viral in nature. 00:03:17.15\00:03:19.09 And so if it's viral, what can we do for a virus? 00:03:19.12\00:03:21.98 There are many things that we can do for a virus. 00:03:21.99\00:03:23.83 There are other things that sort of act like 00:03:23.86\00:03:26.88 chronic fatigue syndrome... 00:03:26.91\00:03:28.10 Let's say like Lyme disease... 00:03:28.13\00:03:29.70 It makes a person very tired... malaise, and achy joints 00:03:29.73\00:03:33.92 which is chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms. 00:03:33.95\00:03:36.66 And, we've treated Lyme disease very, very 00:03:36.69\00:03:39.94 successfully over the years with something as simple 00:03:39.97\00:03:42.43 as hydrotherapy. 00:03:42.46\00:03:44.89 As a matter of fact, we have never had a patient 00:03:44.92\00:03:47.07 at Uchee Pines who came there with Lyme disease 00:03:47.10\00:03:51.96 that did not go away completely clear of the Lyme organism. 00:03:51.99\00:03:55.99 Basically it consists of putting a person into a hydrotherapy 00:03:56.02\00:03:59.99 tank, and you can do it at home in your bathtub 00:04:00.03\00:04:02.79 ...Raising their temperature up and I would normally get their 00:04:02.82\00:04:05.55 temperatures up quite high, upwards of 104 degrees 00:04:05.58\00:04:10.19 And I've even had them up to 105 degrees... 00:04:10.22\00:04:12.43 keeping them there as long as they can tolerate, 00:04:12.46\00:04:15.05 of course at the same time, keeping their head cool... 00:04:15.08\00:04:17.12 keeping them well-hydrated, keeping them encouraged 00:04:17.15\00:04:19.82 because it's very tough to go through this 00:04:19.85\00:04:21.98 particular type of a treatment. 00:04:22.02\00:04:23.28 And we find that that high temperature will kill 00:04:23.31\00:04:26.42 the Lyme organism. 00:04:26.43\00:04:27.78 We also find that it is a good way to kill off viruses... 00:04:27.81\00:04:31.43 And so, if it's a viral infection, 00:04:31.46\00:04:32.97 we give them hydrotherapy... 00:04:33.00\00:04:34.58 And there are other nutritional things that we can do 00:04:34.61\00:04:36.50 ...things like grapeseed extract 00:04:36.53\00:04:39.44 We've seen medical reports saying that grapeseed extract 00:04:39.45\00:04:43.77 or grapefruit seed extract, either one of those... 00:04:43.80\00:04:46.28 grapeseed, or grapefruit seed extract 00:04:46.31\00:04:48.40 ...Both will have a good effect on working on these viruses. 00:04:48.43\00:04:52.39 Another is toxic exposures... usually lead or other types 00:04:52.42\00:04:58.32 of things in our environment. 00:04:58.35\00:04:59.70 We just need to make sure our environment 00:04:59.73\00:05:01.32 is clean of these things. 00:05:01.35\00:05:02.47 Another one of the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome 00:05:02.50\00:05:06.37 is sensitivities... normally a food sensitivity, an allergy 00:05:06.40\00:05:10.89 And so, it's quite simple to find what those things are. 00:05:10.92\00:05:14.92 We eliminate everything from our diet which are known to be 00:05:14.95\00:05:18.42 food allergens and that's almost everything 00:05:18.45\00:05:22.62 But you can get to a very, very simple diet. 00:05:22.65\00:05:25.61 Now I would leave off some main things... 00:05:25.64\00:05:27.94 of course, all animal products, not just the meats, 00:05:27.97\00:05:30.56 but the milks, eggs and the cheese... leave those out. 00:05:30.59\00:05:33.13 They are shown to be some of the 00:05:33.16\00:05:34.34 major food allergens in the world. 00:05:34.37\00:05:36.27 Leave out all caffeinated beverages and foods. 00:05:36.30\00:05:39.09 When I say foods... chocolate goes in that class 00:05:39.12\00:05:41.65 We've got coffee, tea, cola and chocolate. 00:05:41.68\00:05:43.55 Leave off citrus... as good as citrus is, we're not saying 00:05:43.58\00:05:47.99 that citrus is bad, but many people are allergic to citrus. 00:05:48.00\00:05:50.99 Leave off many of your grains, especially wheat. 00:05:51.02\00:05:54.08 As a matter of fact, I've got a study right here that showed 00:05:54.09\00:05:56.40 that they took an Epstein-Barr virus, or some chronic 00:05:56.43\00:06:01.94 fatigue syndrome patients and it did just a 00:06:01.97\00:06:04.30 couple of things for them... 00:06:04.33\00:06:05.42 A wheat-free diet, treatment of allergies, 00:06:05.43\00:06:10.73 and psychotherapy. 00:06:10.76\00:06:12.89 And what we do with a patient along the lines of psychotherapy 00:06:12.92\00:06:16.85 is counseling, encouraging them. 00:06:16.88\00:06:19.26 I remember, very vividly, a patient I had a number of 00:06:19.29\00:06:22.45 years ago with chronic fatigue syndrome... 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.47 After a series, 2 different series; 00:06:24.50\00:06:27.34 1 series of 15 fever treatments and 1 of 20 fever treatments. 00:06:27.37\00:06:31.56 The fellow was still complaining of the fact that... 00:06:31.59\00:06:33.84 "I still don't feel like I have any energy"... 00:06:33.87\00:06:37.02 and he just felt like he still had it. 00:06:37.05\00:06:39.49 And I remember that morning, it was the morning when 00:06:39.52\00:06:42.69 it was doctors' rounds and Dr. Calvin Thrash 00:06:42.72\00:06:45.26 came into the room with me to meet this particular patient 00:06:45.29\00:06:48.10 and Dr. Calvin had his medical reports there and he said, 00:06:48.13\00:06:52.47 Well... I'll call him Bill... "Well Bill, it says here 00:06:52.50\00:06:56.26 that you no longer have the virus in your body, 00:06:56.29\00:06:58.51 or the antigens to the virus" 00:06:58.52\00:07:01.06 And, it was amazing, the transformation! 00:07:01.07\00:07:04.12 He was well! He just... "I feel GREAT!" 00:07:04.15\00:07:06.73 He walked out of there feeling perfectly fine. 00:07:06.76\00:07:08.99 There's something... and don't get me wrong 00:07:09.02\00:07:10.96 I'm not saying that this is all in your mind because 00:07:10.99\00:07:12.79 it's not all in the mind... 00:07:12.82\00:07:14.11 But many, many studies are showing that there is a 00:07:14.14\00:07:17.11 a link to how we feel about things... to how we're going 00:07:17.14\00:07:20.60 to react to those things. 00:07:20.63\00:07:22.17 And so, we did the fever treatments and we also 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.35 had them on a very, very close diet to make sure 00:07:24.38\00:07:26.61 that we were eliminating all kinds of food allergens 00:07:26.64\00:07:29.79 from his particular diet. 00:07:29.82\00:07:30.92 STRESS is another cause of chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:07:30.95\00:07:35.17 We realize that stress lowers the immune response 00:07:35.20\00:07:37.88 and so that's going to be a double whammy 00:07:37.91\00:07:39.53 We've got now a low immune response and not able to 00:07:39.54\00:07:42.00 fight whatever is causing the chronic fatigue syndrome 00:07:42.03\00:07:44.79 and so we realize that we need to reduce stress. 00:07:44.82\00:07:48.03 Now there are many stressors in our lives. 00:07:48.06\00:07:50.29 Noise can be a stress. 00:07:50.32\00:07:52.02 Just our work can be a stress. 00:07:52.05\00:07:55.46 Now, I can't say go out and quit your job... 00:07:55.47\00:07:57.99 but if you have the type of job that causes you lots of 00:07:58.00\00:08:01.10 stress during the daytime, we realize a very easy 00:08:01.11\00:08:04.02 cure for that is exercise neutralizes stress 00:08:04.03\00:08:08.58 And so, after work, go home and exercise. 00:08:08.61\00:08:11.32 Now I realize that when you get home from work 00:08:11.35\00:08:13.48 after a really tough day, the thing you want to do is 00:08:13.51\00:08:16.09 plop down and sleep and you will sleep. 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.18 It's no problem sleeping then... 00:08:19.21\00:08:21.09 But the problem is sleeping at 10 o'clock or 9 o'clock 00:08:21.12\00:08:23.42 when you should be going to bed. 00:08:23.45\00:08:24.55 But if you go out and get some good, vigorous cardiovascular 00:08:24.58\00:08:27.98 exercise, you're going to find that you're going to feel a 00:08:28.01\00:08:29.94 whole lot better... and this has also been shown to be 00:08:29.95\00:08:32.46 one of the ways to fight chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:08:32.49\00:08:37.31 One of the causes could be a marginal nutritional deficiency 00:08:37.32\00:08:41.40 and so, it may be a time to do some supplementation 00:08:41.43\00:08:45.19 But, I really like to suggest people to eat a large variety 00:08:45.22\00:08:49.82 of foods over a long period of time and a very small 00:08:49.83\00:08:53.73 quantity of food... a very small grouping of foods 00:08:53.76\00:08:56.52 at each particular meal. 00:08:56.55\00:08:57.62 Some people get into the habit of eating 00:08:57.65\00:08:59.77 the same thing every single meal 00:08:59.81\00:09:01.29 cornflakes for breakfast, whatever for lunch, 00:09:01.32\00:09:04.66 and the same thing for supper 00:09:04.69\00:09:05.80 Change your nutrients and try to get your nutrients 00:09:05.83\00:09:08.51 in as complex form as possible. 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.24 That means eating raw fruits and vegetables, or as little 00:09:11.27\00:09:14.72 preparation as possible... 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.29 you'll be getting more of your nutrients. 00:09:16.32\00:09:17.93 Ginkgo biloba has been shown to be very effective in 00:09:17.96\00:09:21.08 fighting chronic fatigue syndrome... 00:09:21.11\00:09:23.02 And is a very common tree now, it came from the Orient. 00:09:23.05\00:09:24.94 We see it all over the country right now. 00:09:25.88\00:09:27.69 As a matter of fact, Dr. Thrash has planted a string of those 00:09:27.72\00:09:30.23 Ginkgo biloba trees right down through Uchee Pines. 00:09:30.26\00:09:33.03 And so, I would suggest you get some of that. 00:09:33.06\00:09:35.52 You can find it in your health food store. 00:09:35.55\00:09:37.78 Licorice... now not the type that you get in the candy store, 00:09:37.81\00:09:40.79 the confectionary stores, but licorice as an herb 00:09:40.82\00:09:45.18 also has shown to be very effective in fighting 00:09:45.19\00:09:47.94 chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:09:47.97\00:09:50.30 Bilberries and blueberries... 00:09:50.33\00:09:53.18 These bilberries, blueberries and cranberries 00:09:53.21\00:09:56.67 breakdown the walls of viruses, so these are very good 00:09:56.70\00:10:01.97 in fighting any type of a virus that may be causing 00:10:02.00\00:10:05.50 the chronic fatigue syndrome. 00:10:05.53\00:10:06.77 And so, our thoughts are... 00:10:06.80\00:10:09.39 Keep your mind and your thoughts elevated by praising the Lord. 00:10:09.42\00:10:11.62 You know, I learned years ago this principle of 00:10:12.58\00:10:15.39 "The Law of Reciprocal Influence" 00:10:15.42\00:10:17.77 You get up in the morning... 00:10:17.80\00:10:19.46 you don't feel good... granted, you don't feel good 00:10:19.49\00:10:21.96 but what you need to do is tell the Lord, I praise you anyway. 00:10:21.99\00:10:25.39 You know, it's like the old Job-like situation 00:10:25.42\00:10:27.51 "Though He slay me, yet will I praise Him" 00:10:27.54\00:10:29.86 I received a phone call from a man one time years ago 00:10:29.89\00:10:32.66 who had chronic fatigue syndrome to the point where 00:10:32.69\00:10:34.98 he was completely debilitated. 00:10:35.01\00:10:36.58 He could do nothing more than lie on his bed 00:10:36.61\00:10:39.00 And he decided, after talking with us at Uchee Pines 00:10:39.03\00:10:42.11 to do 3 things in his life... 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.44 1. He was going to exercise. 00:10:43.47\00:10:45.07 2. He was going to do hydrotherapy. 00:10:45.10\00:10:47.09 3. He was going to improve the state of his mind. 00:10:47.12\00:10:51.36 His exercise at the beginning of his course 00:10:51.39\00:10:54.33 consisted of crawling across his floor on his 00:10:54.36\00:10:57.99 hands and his knees. That was it. 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.11 That's all the man could do, But he did that much. 00:11:00.14\00:11:02.82 Then his wife would help him into the bathtub 00:11:02.85\00:11:05.99 and give him a hydrotherapy treatment... 00:11:06.02\00:11:07.70 Raising his temperature as high as she could... 00:11:07.73\00:11:09.78 And I have found in my experience with 00:11:09.81\00:11:11.77 chronic fatigue syndrome, it's very hard to elevate 00:11:11.80\00:11:14.60 the temperature of one of these people. 00:11:14.63\00:11:16.52 But, you get it up as high as you can... 00:11:16.55\00:11:18.42 upwards of 102-103, hold it there for as long 00:11:18.43\00:11:21.94 as that patient is able to stay in there, 00:11:21.97\00:11:24.48 and then let them rest for at least an hour afterwards. 00:11:24.51\00:11:27.40 And the third thing was, he learned to praise the Lord 00:11:27.43\00:11:30.08 no matter how lousy he felt. 00:11:30.11\00:11:31.82 It took 2 years. 00:11:31.85\00:11:33.57 Now, many people who are suffering from 00:11:33.60\00:11:35.92 chronic fatigue syndromes have 00:11:35.93\00:11:37.15 it for many, many more years than 2. 00:11:37.18\00:11:39.13 But, he suffered for 2 years during the treatment process 00:11:39.16\00:11:42.69 At the end of 2 years, he was completely well! 00:11:42.72\00:11:45.22 He went back to work again. 00:11:45.25\00:11:46.56 He had no residual effects. 00:11:46.59\00:11:48.34 And so I think these very simple things are a whole lot better 00:11:48.37\00:11:50.81 than the armamentarium of drugs that they might be 00:11:50.84\00:11:53.41 suggesting in society today, Dr. Thrash. 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.62 Yes, I'm very much with you on that score... 00:11:55.65\00:11:58.51 And, of course, something as simple as a hot bath 00:11:58.54\00:12:01.22 One can take a hot bath for 20 minutes, 00:12:01.25\00:12:03.94 or one can take one for 45 minutes 00:12:03.97\00:12:06.26 And if you can only tolerate it for 20 minutes, that's fine. 00:12:06.29\00:12:10.51 That will help you a lot. 00:12:10.54\00:12:12.16 But if you can tolerate it, maybe 30 minutes or so, 00:12:12.19\00:12:15.28 then that may be better for you. 00:12:15.31\00:12:16.90 And, 45 minutes could sometimes be used as well. 00:12:16.91\00:12:20.76 Now there is literally a laundry list of symptoms that a person 00:12:20.79\00:12:25.79 can have with chronic fatigue syndrome 00:12:25.82\00:12:28.40 And, of course, in addition to just overwhelming 00:12:28.43\00:12:32.09 fatigue, let me mention a few other things as well. 00:12:32.10\00:12:35.34 One of those is depression... 00:12:35.37\00:12:37.11 And I have a list, we just wrote down all the things 00:12:37.14\00:12:41.75 that we could find that people have suffered from with 00:12:41.78\00:12:45.80 chronic fatigue syndrome... 00:12:45.83\00:12:47.40 ...fever, sore throat, painful lymph nodes especially in the 00:12:47.43\00:12:51.31 neck and under the arms, general weakness of muscles... not just 00:12:51.34\00:12:55.73 tiredness but also weakness, and muscle pain and discomfort, 00:12:55.76\00:12:59.72 the disabling fatigue needs to be at least 6 hours a day 00:12:59.75\00:13:05.32 and lasting for at least 6 months... but 00:13:05.35\00:13:08.80 most of the time, it's 24 hours a day... anytime they 00:13:08.83\00:13:12.74 think of it, they are tired; headaches, joint pains 00:13:12.77\00:13:16.09 and visual complaints, or other neurologic problems. 00:13:16.12\00:13:19.24 Sleep disturbance is one of the most difficult to deal with 00:13:19.27\00:13:23.49 and depression is also very difficult to deal with. 00:13:23.52\00:13:26.86 And then some people will have the onset at a very 00:13:26.89\00:13:31.49 definite time... they can tell you at least the day 00:13:31.52\00:13:34.43 or, by all means, the week and they can sometimes 00:13:34.46\00:13:40.05 tell you the very hour... "I was feeling good until 00:13:40.08\00:13:42.14 3 o'clock in the afternoon and suddenly I didn't feel good 00:13:42.17\00:13:44.79 and I felt tired every since... I had to go home and go to bed 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.83 and I haven't felt like getting up since then" 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.79 and that may be 6 months later. 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.82 So this is some of the laundry list of symptoms that 00:13:51.85\00:13:56.24 people with a chronic fatigue syndrome have. 00:13:56.27\00:13:58.58 Now, nutrition is one of the important things 00:13:58.61\00:14:02.59 that we can do for fatigue in general... 00:14:02.62\00:14:04.97 And Lidia Seda, who is my colleague at Uchee Pines, 00:14:05.00\00:14:09.44 she is a Lifestyle counselor and a VERY GOOD cook! 00:14:09.47\00:14:13.45 Well, thank you, Dr. Agatha, I appreciate that. 00:14:13.46\00:14:14.75 And oh, I can see that you have sea cakes! Yes, I do. 00:14:14.78\00:14:20.07 All right. I really like your sea cakes... tell us about it. 00:14:20.10\00:14:22.76 Well one of the main ingredients in sea cakes is kelp... 00:14:23.50\00:14:29.26 And kelp usually is very beneficial for those individuals 00:14:29.29\00:14:33.17 who may have thyroid problems. 00:14:33.20\00:14:34.71 We recognize that anytime the body is not working o 00:14:34.74\00:14:38.37 full capacity... whether it's an illness, an infection 00:14:38.40\00:14:42.74 insomnia, obesity... 00:14:42.77\00:14:44.73 anything that keeps it from being able to work at its 00:14:44.76\00:14:47.70 full potential, can be fatiguing 00:14:47.73\00:14:50.55 And having thyroid, or what's called "hypothyroid" can be 00:14:50.58\00:14:55.02 one of the conditions which can cause fatigue. 00:14:55.05\00:14:57.28 And kelp has been known to help with this situation 00:14:57.31\00:15:00.83 There's a good bit of iodine in it since it comes from the sea. 00:15:00.86\00:15:04.45 And so, when you make sea cakes, you always put kelp in it... 00:15:04.48\00:15:07.95 Always... So if you leave out the kelp, 00:15:07.98\00:15:09.90 which you could do, then you'd call it just "cakes" 00:15:09.93\00:15:13.47 You could call it... well, exactly... call it cakes 00:15:13.48\00:15:15.69 The other nice thing is that this recipe also calls for basil 00:15:15.72\00:15:19.13 And basil has been used for individuals to treat exhaustion 00:15:19.16\00:15:24.72 and to help build up energy. Yes... 00:15:24.75\00:15:27.29 It's a little bit of a pepper upper! 00:15:27.32\00:15:29.33 A pick-me-up... Yes it is. 00:15:29.36\00:15:31.07 And, of course, we're not using it in the same quantities 00:15:31.10\00:15:33.37 that a person may need but using it in your recipes 00:15:33.40\00:15:36.51 overall can be something that can help to boost energy 00:15:36.54\00:15:39.56 And it's a basic herb that many people have in their kitchen. 00:15:39.59\00:15:43.01 Well tell us what else you have in it because I'm sure 00:15:43.02\00:15:45.51 it's also very helpful. 00:15:45.54\00:15:46.76 Well, why don't we let the whole audience see what 00:15:46.79\00:15:49.06 exactly are the main ingredients for sea cakes... 00:15:49.09\00:15:52.05 and they are as follows: 00:15:52.08\00:15:53.05 Well now, there are several very good ingredients in that 00:16:24.07\00:16:27.29 that would help with fatigue. 00:16:27.32\00:16:28.92 I noticed onion... Onion has Quercetin in it... 00:16:28.95\00:16:35.00 And Quercetin is very helpful for fatigue. 00:16:35.04\00:16:38.22 It's a good general tonic. 00:16:38.25\00:16:40.69 It's a nice antioxidant. 00:16:40.72\00:16:42.44 It helps you not to age rapidly, ... so it's very good for that 00:16:42.47\00:16:46.19 And then I noticed also, it had rice in it. 00:16:46.23\00:16:48.33 Rice has a very good quality protein... 00:16:48.36\00:16:51.52 ...not a very high quality but what it does have is excellent 00:16:51.55\00:16:55.25 And so, those are very good cakes. 00:16:55.28\00:16:57.27 So we might call them rice patties or basil... 00:16:57.28\00:17:02.42 Basil cakes if you didn't use the kelp. 00:17:02.45\00:17:06.58 And many people do enjoy the taste of fish... 00:17:06.61\00:17:09.40 So this is good way of getting the taste of fish 00:17:09.43\00:17:12.22 without getting many times the high salt that we find in fish 00:17:12.25\00:17:16.44 Also, nowadays there's high contamination with fish. 00:17:16.47\00:17:20.30 Our waters are very contaminated either with pesticides, 00:17:20.33\00:17:23.60 or petroleums or chlorine... 00:17:23.63\00:17:25.50 Different types of chemicals that are not 00:17:25.53\00:17:29.10 beneficial for the body; and unfortunately, 00:17:29.13\00:17:30.98 in the fish, in the adipose tissue or in the tissues of fat, 00:17:31.01\00:17:35.48 they store that up in concentrated form 00:17:35.51\00:17:38.21 and we, unfortunately, then consume that... 00:17:38.24\00:17:40.51 So this is a way of getting the TASTE of the sea, I should say 00:17:40.54\00:17:45.05 and the benefits of kelp without getting some of the added 00:17:45.08\00:17:49.55 undesirable benefits of eating fish. 00:17:49.58\00:17:52.14 You know, as I smell these, they smell very much like 00:17:52.17\00:17:56.57 the salmon croquets that my mother used to make 00:17:56.60\00:17:59.42 when I was a girl. Oh really? 00:17:59.46\00:18:00.88 And I can just see myself taking a slice of bread and 00:18:00.91\00:18:03.74 putting 2 of these cakes on it with a slice of onion and 00:18:03.75\00:18:08.34 a slice of tomato and some lettuce and perhaps some 00:18:08.37\00:18:12.18 soy mayonnaise and having a nice sandwich... a very nice sandwich 00:18:12.21\00:18:15.83 I know once when I demonstrated this for a cooking class, 00:18:16.65\00:18:19.40 that we held, someone said, "these taste just like crab" 00:18:19.43\00:18:23.45 So you can see that it does satisfy the taste of those 00:18:23.48\00:18:27.09 who are fish lovers! 00:18:27.12\00:18:28.24 Yes, if you're a seafood person, this would be the thing... 00:18:28.25\00:18:31.84 the seafoods... Yes, exactly 00:18:31.87\00:18:33.74 and the other nice thing about this is that it also has 00:18:33.77\00:18:36.15 celery and celery has been known to help lower 00:18:36.18\00:18:39.93 blood pressure. Yes 00:18:39.96\00:18:41.07 And it's good for arthritis as well. 00:18:41.10\00:18:42.95 So, like anything that helps to get our health that much 00:18:42.98\00:18:46.93 better, can help fight against fatigue 00:18:46.94\00:18:49.21 And with this also, we have another recipe... 00:18:49.24\00:18:52.13 a tartar sauce that can go with it 00:18:52.16\00:18:54.67 And I'd like to share with the audience those ingredients 00:18:54.70\00:18:57.36 for the tartar sauce... 00:18:57.39\00:18:58.84 What you have is 1 cup of water 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.85 1/8 cup of Soy Supreme Powder 00:19:00.88\00:19:04.13 I understand the Soy Supreme Powder is made from 00:19:04.14\00:19:06.60 the whole soybean... 00:19:06.63\00:19:07.73 Yes, it's a better quality powder... 00:19:07.76\00:19:10.11 than many of the other ones. 00:19:10.14\00:19:11.63 1 teaspoon of salt 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 00:19:11.66\00:19:15.55 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon of tahini, 00:19:15.58\00:19:20.86 that's sesame seed butter... 00:19:20.89\00:19:22.86 and that's it... that's how you make it 00:19:22.90\00:19:25.71 And then you could add what I have here... 00:19:25.74\00:19:28.52 is a relish and what's nice about this relish is 00:19:28.55\00:19:33.48 it doesn't have any vinegar. 00:19:33.51\00:19:34.86 Oh, okay, so that means it was probably made with 00:19:34.87\00:19:38.22 lemon juice to give it the little bit of 00:19:38.25\00:19:40.54 sourness that you expect. 00:19:40.58\00:19:42.36 And a little bit of dill as well 00:19:42.39\00:19:43.99 to give it a little bit of that little, I guess 00:19:44.02\00:19:46.94 spiciness that people look forward to. 00:19:46.98\00:19:48.95 And you can just mix that in with the ingredients for 00:19:48.98\00:19:51.96 the tartar sauce and you would have your tartar sauce! 00:19:51.99\00:19:54.80 Oh yes, well I'm a label-reader and this looks very good. 00:19:54.83\00:19:59.37 It has a little turmeric in it which is now being 00:19:59.40\00:20:02.64 recognized as having anti-inflammatory properties 00:20:02.67\00:20:05.73 so that might help a little bit with chronic fatigue as well. 00:20:05.76\00:20:09.16 Ohh... may I have lunch with you when you eat these sea cakes 00:20:09.19\00:20:13.00 Of course, I'm hoping you will! 00:20:13.01\00:20:15.72 Very good. Thank you so much, Lidia 00:20:15.75\00:20:17.98 Appreciate that. 00:20:18.01\00:20:19.05 And I'm a lot less tired than I was just thinking about 00:20:19.08\00:20:22.46 maybe eating with Lidia and having some of 00:20:22.49\00:20:24.81 these nice sea cakes. 00:20:24.84\00:20:26.23 Now, there are many other reasons why people get tired. 00:20:26.26\00:20:30.59 And I have here one reason why people get tired... 00:20:30.62\00:20:34.44 And this is in teenage boys... 00:20:34.47\00:20:36.39 well actually 11 to 18 years of age... 00:20:36.40\00:20:40.97 They're suffering a lot of fatigue these days which 00:20:41.00\00:20:44.11 distresses me... I'm just sorry to hear that because 00:20:44.14\00:20:47.30 I remember that was the age when I felt 00:20:47.33\00:20:50.25 the most full of energy I think I ever have. 00:20:50.26\00:20:52.94 But tiredness has been linked to their lifestyle. 00:20:52.97\00:20:56.48 Let me read this to you... this comes from the 00:20:56.51\00:20:58.26 "Journal of Nutrition and Environmental Medicine" 00:20:58.29\00:21:00.52 It was published in 1999, and you know what they say? 00:21:00.55\00:21:05.35 After ALL this research that was published here... 00:21:05.38\00:21:08.97 then they come to the conclusion that there were 00:21:08.98\00:21:11.36 3 things that were involved in these boys' chronic fatigue. 00:21:11.37\00:21:15.01 Unhealthy food, I already knew that... 00:21:15.04\00:21:20.56 Bedtime was irregular. Well, you know, I already knew that. 00:21:20.59\00:21:26.52 Television-watching. I could have predicted that too. 00:21:26.55\00:21:32.40 So I suspect that these researchers got $100,000 00:21:32.43\00:21:36.54 to discover this wheel again. 00:21:36.57\00:21:39.06 Now, we need to remember this... 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.39 Unhealthful food, irregular bedtime and TV-watching. 00:21:41.40\00:21:46.16 Now if we will let our children go out and exercise 00:21:46.19\00:21:49.96 If we will give them the most healthful diet 00:21:49.99\00:21:52.35 it's possible to have, and if we will watch very carefully 00:21:52.38\00:21:56.53 what they're watching on TV, and that they don't watch TV 00:21:56.56\00:22:00.68 ...that they get out and exercise instead, 00:22:00.71\00:22:02.89 I suspect that we will eliminate a large part of the fatigue 00:22:02.92\00:22:06.67 that we're now seeing in the youngsters. 00:22:06.70\00:22:09.13 Now, not only can older folk and those who are 00:22:09.16\00:22:16.64 teenagers, but even infants can get very tired. 00:22:16.67\00:22:20.50 And when the infant gets very tired, if mother knows how to 00:22:20.53\00:22:24.92 do an infant massage, she is VERY likely to be able to 00:22:24.95\00:22:29.42 help her infant who may be very cranky and even 00:22:29.45\00:22:32.97 inconsolably crying because of the fatigue... 00:22:33.00\00:22:38.25 that his little muscles actually ache because of his 00:22:38.28\00:22:43.02 tiredness, and so because of that, if mother knows how 00:22:43.05\00:22:47.01 to do an infant massage, she can substantially reduce 00:22:47.04\00:22:50.64 the fatigue and the crankiness that her child has... 00:22:50.67\00:22:54.50 And so I've asked Shannon Jenkins, who is a 00:22:54.53\00:22:57.18 Lifestyle educator student at Uchee Pines, who has 00:22:57.21\00:23:00.99 a little niece and, you've been with little Tianna ever since 00:23:01.02\00:23:04.64 the day she was born. 00:23:04.67\00:23:05.75 Does she ever get cranky? 00:23:05.78\00:23:07.60 A little bit, yes. 00:23:07.63\00:23:09.54 Well, show us what you do in the way of a massage 00:23:09.57\00:23:13.13 when she gets cranky and tell us how it helps her. 00:23:13.16\00:23:16.97 I see you've got a chart here... 00:23:17.00\00:23:18.63 Yes, I do and I'm going to demonstrate here on Melissa. 00:23:18.66\00:23:22.21 First start with the leg and do a milking motion down the leg 00:23:22.24\00:23:28.14 ...just like this, just down the leg and 00:23:28.17\00:23:33.98 put a little pressure on it. 00:23:34.01\00:23:35.60 And then go to the foot, and like a fanning motion, 00:23:35.63\00:23:41.03 just press on the bottom of the foot. 00:23:41.06\00:23:43.41 And then, you can go back to the leg and do 00:23:43.44\00:23:49.66 like a rolling motion down to the ankle... 00:23:49.69\00:23:52.16 from the ankle to the knee, just like this. 00:23:52.19\00:24:01.01 And then you can move to the chest. 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.95 And over the ribcage, you can do a little fanning motion 00:24:02.98\00:24:07.59 just over the chest... and then you can go 00:24:07.62\00:24:12.70 from the chest ALL the way down the arms and back up 00:24:12.73\00:24:16.67 in a nice smooth stroke. 00:24:16.70\00:24:18.57 It looks like that gets the shoulders too. 00:24:18.60\00:24:20.63 Yes, the shoulders and all the way down the arms. 00:24:20.66\00:24:23.08 Then you can play a little bit with the baby. 00:24:23.11\00:24:26.53 ...Like peek-a-boo, you can put your hand over the face 00:24:26.56\00:24:29.41 and go back down to the ears and come back up 00:24:29.44\00:24:32.06 and across the cheeks. 00:24:32.09\00:24:33.85 Then over here, we can do a little massage on the cheeks 00:24:33.88\00:24:38.71 and down the jaw, and just play with the baby a little bit. 00:24:38.74\00:24:43.35 Does that help Tianna when she has that kind of thing? 00:24:43.38\00:24:47.24 Yes, they will like that, and after a few days, 00:24:47.27\00:24:49.07 they will respond a lot more positively. 00:24:49.10\00:24:50.79 They might not like it so much the first time, 00:24:50.82\00:24:52.85 but after a couple of days, they will love it. 00:24:52.88\00:24:56.99 Thank you very much, Shannon. 00:24:57.02\00:24:58.51 Now I hope some mother here will know a lot more 00:24:58.54\00:25:02.59 about how to deal with a cranky baby because of 00:25:02.62\00:25:06.27 the way that Shannon has dealt with little Tianna. 00:25:06.30\00:25:08.72 And, don't be afraid of an infant massage, 00:25:08.75\00:25:11.16 they may act as if they don't like it at first, but 00:25:11.19\00:25:13.54 you can be assured, as Shannon said, that they will like it 00:25:13.57\00:25:16.54 after a few times. 00:25:16.57\00:25:18.16 Now one of the big problems that we have in the modern age 00:25:18.19\00:25:21.16 is that of jet lag. 00:25:21.19\00:25:22.42 So, I've asked Don Miller, who is very acquainted with 00:25:22.45\00:25:25.84 jet lag, if he will tell you something about jet lag 00:25:25.87\00:25:29.09 and how to handle that very good cause of fatigue. 00:25:29.12\00:25:32.21 Yes, it's sort of like dealing with cranky travelers 00:25:32.24\00:25:34.52 in this case, because I deal with it a lot... 00:25:34.55\00:25:36.93 because I do spend a lot of time in Europe 00:25:36.94\00:25:39.03 and other parts of the world. 00:25:39.06\00:25:40.36 And, just a couple of simple things, and you probably 00:25:40.39\00:25:43.68 know some things... and if you do, let me know, 00:25:43.71\00:25:45.41 because I need all the help I can get. 00:25:45.44\00:25:47.72 But one of the things we like to try to do is try to start 00:25:47.73\00:25:50.32 acclimatizing yourself to where you'll be going. 00:25:50.36\00:25:52.74 Let's say I'm going to be flying to London next week... 00:25:52.77\00:25:56.22 I realize that they are about 5 hours ahead of us 00:25:56.25\00:25:58.84 That means at midnight their time, when they should be 00:25:58.87\00:26:02.43 sleeping, it's only 7 o'clock in the evening at my time. 00:26:02.46\00:26:05.24 Now what I should start doing then, is start going to bed 00:26:05.27\00:26:08.54 EARLIER to start getting nearer to their time. 00:26:08.57\00:26:11.54 It's not so bad the going to bed time because it seems like 00:26:11.57\00:26:14.36 we in America all go to bed too late, 00:26:14.39\00:26:16.26 but it's that getting up time. 00:26:16.29\00:26:17.64 Let's say if they sleep in and don't get up until 7 a. m. 00:26:17.67\00:26:21.16 that's 2 a. m. your time. 00:26:21.19\00:26:23.55 So if you start getting up earlier in the morning, 00:26:23.58\00:26:25.75 and going to be earlier at night a few days before you go, 00:26:25.78\00:26:28.66 you'll sort of lessen that gap in-between where you 00:26:28.69\00:26:32.77 are coming from and where you're going. 00:26:32.80\00:26:35.00 Another thing you need to do is stay well-hydrated 00:26:35.03\00:26:38.28 during your trip and immediately after your trip. 00:26:38.31\00:26:40.82 We find that you need to drink a lot of water. 00:26:40.85\00:26:42.03 Now, you understand that if you're flying across the 00:26:42.06\00:26:45.11 Atlantic ocean, or wherever you're going, 00:26:45.14\00:26:47.31 drinking a lot of water means you'll be getting up a lot 00:26:47.34\00:26:49.49 And so sometimes, I don't do that but I'll stay well-hydrated 00:26:49.52\00:26:52.63 a few days before and really, as soon as I arrive 00:26:52.66\00:26:55.52 at the airport, I will start drinking lots of water. 00:26:55.55\00:26:57.93 I usually carry my own water because it's a lot of 00:26:57.96\00:27:00.47 expense to buy water in airports but stay well-hydrated. 00:27:00.50\00:27:03.73 Also, it's very, very good... it's amazing, if you fast 00:27:03.76\00:27:07.27 even during the trip because that airplane food is not 00:27:07.30\00:27:11.06 that good anyway... and the day after the trip, 00:27:11.09\00:27:13.31 you'll find that you're going to have a lot less problems 00:27:13.34\00:27:15.46 and I try as much as possible to sleep on my trips. 00:27:15.49\00:27:18.80 I take some melatonin, I put an eye mask on... 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.61 It's always harder going east, than it is going west 00:27:21.64\00:27:24.70 and so the east side trips... do these simple things 00:27:24.73\00:27:27.35 and you should find some real benefit... Dr. Thrash 00:27:27.38\00:27:29.80 That's very good.. Thank you so much for helping 00:27:29.83\00:27:32.01 us to deal with this other very common cause of fatigue. 00:27:32.02\00:27:35.98 Now, of course, fatigue can be a part of a disease process 00:27:36.01\00:27:39.32 and if you can't explain it some other way, 00:27:39.35\00:27:41.11 then you do need professional help. 00:27:41.12\00:27:44.05 And I would like to say... The Lord is coming soon! 00:27:44.08\00:27:47.27 And in the earth made new, nobody will EVER be tired 00:27:47.30\00:27:52.15 We won't even need to sleep. 00:27:52.18\00:27:54.05 We might sleep but we won't need to. 00:27:54.08\00:27:56.07 Praise the Lord! 00:27:56.10\00:27:58.05
