Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.72 I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician 00:00:03.75\00:00:05.89 at Uchee Pines Institute... 00:00:05.93\00:00:07.47 and we're going to talk with you today about this very 00:00:07.51\00:00:11.31 dreaded diagnosis "cancer" 00:00:11.34\00:00:14.76 You know, I don't even like the word, do you? 00:00:14.79\00:00:18.02 And yet, we're not powerless against it. 00:00:18.03\00:00:21.08 There're many things that we can do... 00:00:21.11\00:00:23.72 And we'll be talking with you about some things that 00:00:23.75\00:00:26.04 cause cancer and some things that you can do 00:00:26.07\00:00:28.51 to keep yourself from getting cancer. 00:00:28.54\00:00:30.73 We'd like to have you join us. 00:00:30.76\00:00:31.73 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:53.13\00:00:55.34 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:55.35\00:00:58.81 and now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:58.82\00:01:03.72 There have been several times in my life when I have 00:01:03.75\00:01:06.93 made some MAJOR changes in my life. 00:01:06.96\00:01:10.67 One of those has to do with the lungs... 00:01:10.70\00:01:14.22 And I have here from the American Lung Association, 00:01:14.25\00:01:17.24 a model, or a little representation of the lungs 00:01:17.27\00:01:20.74 I was just looking at this cancer of the lung... 00:01:20.77\00:01:24.23 and I remember when I stopped smoking... 00:01:24.26\00:01:26.88 It was a day when a surgeon friend of mine brought a lung 00:01:26.91\00:01:33.10 over to the laboratory for me to examine it 00:01:33.13\00:01:36.62 and to give him the terrible diagnosis of cancer. 00:01:36.65\00:01:39.32 Of course, we already knew it was cancer. 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.48 And, I made a major lifestyle change at that time. 00:01:41.51\00:01:45.28 Then, there have been some other times when I've made changes. 00:01:45.29\00:01:49.38 When my mother was diagnosed with cancer of the colon, 00:01:49.41\00:01:52.69 I made some other major changes, 00:01:52.72\00:01:55.53 realizing that cancer of the colon sort of runs in families 00:01:55.56\00:01:59.12 and so do life style, so I made some life style changes 00:01:59.15\00:02:02.71 with that. 00:02:03.01\00:02:04.73 And then, I've made some other changes... 00:02:04.76\00:02:07.35 cancer of the breast and cancer of the ovaries are 00:02:07.38\00:02:09.18 known to be associated with a variety of dietary 00:02:09.21\00:02:13.01 lifestyles and habits... 00:02:13.05\00:02:16.46 And so I have made some major changes as I have gotten 00:02:16.50\00:02:20.67 into the age of being susceptible to those 00:02:20.70\00:02:23.49 kinds of cancers. 00:02:23.50\00:02:25.12 And there are so many... being fair-skinned and blue-eyed 00:02:25.15\00:02:29.20 I've made some changes having to do with the way that I 00:02:29.23\00:02:33.14 take care of my skin. 00:02:33.17\00:02:34.51 And so I'd like to talk with you today... 00:02:34.54\00:02:37.19 and I would like for my colleague at Uchee Pines 00:02:37.22\00:02:39.90 to join me, Dr. Winn Horsley, 00:02:39.93\00:02:42.70 who will assist me with the presentation of a LARGE 00:02:42.71\00:02:46.53 amount of material on cancer... 00:02:46.56\00:02:49.40 so much written today, Dr. Horsley... Hello 00:02:49.43\00:02:51.79 on this matter of cancer... 00:02:51.82\00:02:54.70 And, Dr. Horsley and I and the other staff physicians 00:02:54.73\00:02:58.74 at Uchee Pines see a good bit of cancer... We do. 00:02:58.75\00:03:01.88 We feel that there are many things that we can do 00:03:01.91\00:03:08.41 and yet we also realize that this is a very powerful foe. 00:03:08.44\00:03:12.30 So, we want to do what we can. 00:03:12.33\00:03:14.60 So, Dr. Winn, would you sort of kick the ball off for us 00:03:14.63\00:03:19.14 in talking about cancer. 00:03:19.17\00:03:21.39 Well, maybe one could start with this issue of growth. 00:03:21.42\00:03:27.13 All right... yes, growth. 00:03:27.16\00:03:29.32 Growth is always good, isn't it? 00:03:29.35\00:03:31.74 Well, you know, we tend to think that way. 00:03:31.77\00:03:34.63 We think of, of course, a child growing... 00:03:34.66\00:03:36.69 and, if he didn't grow, how sad it would be. 00:03:36.72\00:03:39.70 So we tend to generalize and think growth is always 00:03:39.73\00:03:44.06 a positive thing. 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.69 Well, when we come to cancer, we realize there has to be a 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.92 strong correction to that view. 00:03:48.95\00:03:50.78 Cancer is simply the excessive growth and multiplication 00:03:50.81\00:03:55.15 of cells... when really, they should have limited and stayed 00:03:55.18\00:03:59.96 right where they were and not grown at all. 00:03:59.99\00:04:02.67 Now, what foods tend to promote growth? 00:04:02.70\00:04:08.92 I think that's an interesting question... 00:04:08.95\00:04:10.33 since really, cancer, is growth when it shouldn't be there. 00:04:10.36\00:04:14.08 And, this might not be the scientific way to go about it, 00:04:14.11\00:04:18.17 but I think we can talk about science after we talk 00:04:18.20\00:04:22.15 about just this general reflection. 00:04:22.16\00:04:24.42 There are foods that the Creator made for growth... 00:04:24.45\00:04:27.80 even rapid growth. 00:04:27.83\00:04:29.49 And, one would think that those wouldn't be very 00:04:29.52\00:04:33.62 appropriate at a time of life when we don't want 00:04:33.65\00:04:35.67 anymore growth. 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.20 And so, what foods are the ones for growth? 00:04:37.23\00:04:40.08 Well, I think we can think right away... 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.94 the young, not only of humans but of all the mammal species, 00:04:41.95\00:04:47.53 receive milk from their mothers. 00:04:47.56\00:04:50.41 And so that milk causes a tremendous growth 00:04:50.44\00:04:56.28 A baby triples its weight in the first year. 00:04:56.31\00:04:59.98 Doubles it's birth weight in 6 months 00:05:00.01\00:05:02.07 and triples it in a year... There it is... okay 00:05:02.10\00:05:05.85 That's milk that is doing that. 00:05:05.88\00:05:08.73 Aside from the abundance of water in milk, 00:05:08.76\00:05:11.77 you've got lots of protein. 00:05:11.80\00:05:13.45 And some growth factors that are specific, other than 00:05:13.48\00:05:17.47 just the protein and the fat and the sugar, 00:05:17.50\00:05:20.94 but some specific growth factors that our 00:05:20.97\00:05:23.20 loving Divine Designer put in the milk... so that the 00:05:23.23\00:05:27.39 little infant could grow and could get so that he is 00:05:27.42\00:05:30.66 big enough to stand alone. 00:05:30.69\00:05:32.66 Another food that we might not think of right away 00:05:32.69\00:05:36.60 as being a growth food, but actually it's for growth 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.35 before birth... 00:05:39.38\00:05:40.71 Here, we're talking about food that is in the bird family 00:05:40.74\00:05:45.58 ...it's eggs. 00:05:45.61\00:05:48.29 Eggs have all that substance which the tiny creature 00:05:48.30\00:05:54.15 that's going to hatch... 00:05:54.18\00:05:57.59 All that it needs from a tiny 1 cell state until it is ready 00:05:57.62\00:06:02.35 to hatch out of the egg. 00:06:02.38\00:06:03.40 So, that's a tremendous growth spurt. 00:06:03.43\00:06:07.83 Well those foods, one might, again I say... 00:06:07.86\00:06:12.27 Not because I've proved it right now in this discussion... 00:06:12.30\00:06:15.39 But what one might wonder, those foods that are made 00:06:15.42\00:06:18.40 to promote rapid growth, by the Creator... 00:06:18.43\00:06:22.98 One could have a big question mark... is that appropriate 00:06:23.01\00:06:25.09 when we're at a stage when we don't want to grow 00:06:25.12\00:06:27.31 any further... Yes. 00:06:27.34\00:06:28.72 Well, I certainly agree with you that we do not want 00:06:28.75\00:06:33.01 to promote growth when we're in the cancer age. Um hm 00:06:33.02\00:06:36.62 I was thinking, you know, in that regard, really 00:06:36.65\00:06:41.19 you talked about milk as having other factors and really being 00:06:41.22\00:06:45.01 ...it's a food that is concentrated in a way 00:06:45.04\00:06:48.30 It's a very specialized food. Um hm 00:06:48.33\00:06:52.09 Calorie-dense, or unit of volume that has a lot of calories. 00:06:52.12\00:06:57.58 Especially cow's milk. Yes 00:06:57.61\00:06:59.52 Compared to human milk. Yes. 00:06:59.55\00:07:01.68 Other concentrated foods, might wonder... one could have 00:07:01.71\00:07:06.64 the same kind of question about PROTEIN as a substance 00:07:06.67\00:07:11.65 We do need in adult life, but a small amount, 00:07:11.66\00:07:14.67 since all that the protein REALLY is needed for, 00:07:14.70\00:07:18.42 in adult life, when we've achieved our full height, 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.55 is repair. 00:07:21.58\00:07:23.00 It's not for growth anymore. 00:07:23.03\00:07:24.90 And so, if we're giving a person way more protein than what he 00:07:24.93\00:07:29.35 needs for that repair, then we're giving him a growth food 00:07:29.38\00:07:34.97 that really is at inappropriate quantities. 00:07:35.00\00:07:38.23 And can stimulate the growth of neoplasms or new growths 00:07:38.26\00:07:44.99 whether they be benign new growths, 00:07:45.02\00:07:47.98 or malignant new growths like cancer. 00:07:48.01\00:07:50.94 You know, I was thinking of this and thinking about 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.37 the topic... benign growths which, you know that sounds fine 00:07:53.40\00:07:58.76 But who wants benign growths? 00:07:58.79\00:08:00.41 Whether it's on our skin, as lumps coming out, 00:08:00.44\00:08:02.80 or in the uterus, or in the breasts... Exactly! 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.78 Or in the colon where polyps can even block the way. 00:08:05.81\00:08:09.22 One other concentrated food I'd like to mention is sugar. 00:08:09.25\00:08:14.55 Oh yes... 00:08:14.58\00:08:16.42 Now sugar isn't a growth food, but it's an extremely 00:08:16.45\00:08:19.87 concentrated food and the problem is, 00:08:19.90\00:08:23.81 you don't have the OTHER nutrients... 00:08:23.84\00:08:25.91 when you've just isolated out the sugar, you don't have the 00:08:25.94\00:08:27.99 nutrients even to metabolize and work with the sugar well 00:08:28.02\00:08:31.06 And, since we're talking about cancer, 00:08:31.09\00:08:36.10 this would probably be an appropriate time to mention 00:08:36.13\00:08:39.19 that our BIGGEST protection against cancer is the 00:08:39.22\00:08:41.97 immune system. Um hm... yes, it is 00:08:42.00\00:08:44.25 Constantly monitoring the cells of our body IF the 00:08:44.28\00:08:47.05 immune system is functioning well. 00:08:47.08\00:08:49.10 And one very impressive point about the immune system 00:08:49.11\00:08:56.38 is that with increased sugar intake, it is suppressed. 00:08:56.41\00:09:02.90 A large quantity of sugar and we could even explain this 00:09:02.93\00:09:07.59 quantitatively in terms of so many teaspoons of sugar 00:09:07.62\00:09:11.08 it will reduce the ability of the white blood cells, 00:09:11.11\00:09:14.92 that are the heart of the immune system, to do their job. 00:09:14.95\00:09:17.49 And that job is not just fighting infection but 00:09:17.52\00:09:21.07 detecting cancer and eliminating it. 00:09:21.10\00:09:24.27 Dr. Winn, I'm sure you've had patients to tell you 00:09:24.30\00:09:27.92 or to ask you... when you have said to them what you've 00:09:27.95\00:09:32.36 just said or approximately what you've just said, 00:09:32.39\00:09:34.99 "Doctor, you're NOT going to take away my sugar, are you?" 00:09:35.02\00:09:38.61 Actually, the Creator put the sugar in all kinds of foods. Yes 00:09:38.64\00:09:44.22 You think that's enough for people? 00:09:44.25\00:09:45.85 Oh absolutely! 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.00 It might not be enough to satisfy the palate of those 00:09:48.03\00:09:50.96 who have been accustomed to taking 1/2 or 3/4 of a cup 00:09:50.99\00:09:53.82 of sugar a day. 00:09:53.85\00:09:55.08 You know, people... when one talks about amounts of sugar, 00:09:55.11\00:09:58.83 ...there's one graph that we use where it mentions 00:09:58.86\00:10:03.63 12 and 24 teaspoons of sugar and people are going... 00:10:03.66\00:10:07.05 ...who in the world is going to eat that much sugar? 00:10:07.08\00:10:09.91 One banana split has 25 teaspoons worth of sugar in it. 00:10:09.94\00:10:14.79 Yes, it's amazing that just one dish... 00:10:14.82\00:10:18.20 Sometimes a person will have a little sick-feeling 00:10:18.23\00:10:21.20 in eating a banana split but most of the time, 00:10:21.23\00:10:24.24 people who are accustomed to eating heavy sweets can 00:10:24.27\00:10:28.78 take that banana split down and not have ANY 00:10:28.81\00:10:30.88 sense of nausea with it... 00:10:30.91\00:10:32.76 And yet, I have seen the reverse thing too... 00:10:32.79\00:10:35.36 I've seen people who have come from third world countries 00:10:35.39\00:10:37.51 where they've eaten a lot of just native foods, 00:10:37.52\00:10:41.07 and then I would serve a dish at my table that had 00:10:41.10\00:10:45.23 just the sweet fruits like bananas, maybe some 00:10:45.26\00:10:48.30 dried fruits but nothing that was a concentrated sweetener 00:10:48.33\00:10:52.50 added and have them say, "That's very sweet. " 00:10:52.53\00:10:57.75 And know that it was because their appetite was not overly 00:10:57.78\00:11:03.04 stimulated by too much sugar. 00:11:03.07\00:11:05.42 I'm wondering if we shouldn't mention more... 00:11:05.45\00:11:08.21 You've already talked about lung cancer... 00:11:08.24\00:11:10.27 I want to get you to tell some reasons why 00:11:10.30\00:11:12.68 though... some other things about lung cancer 00:11:12.71\00:11:16.22 I would just like to show this picture of the lung cancer. 00:11:16.25\00:11:21.05 Notice this big growth here... 00:11:21.06\00:11:22.84 You can easily see it, you don't even need to have it 00:11:22.87\00:11:25.61 blown up but here it is... This is the cancer 00:11:25.64\00:11:29.17 Here is the lung and there is the cancer. 00:11:29.20\00:11:32.73 And the American Cancer Assoc. and American Lung Assoc. has 00:11:32.76\00:11:36.07 shown this cancer very graphically here 00:11:36.10\00:11:39.16 And I have seen lungs with this very same type of cancer 00:11:39.19\00:11:43.44 maybe 200 times and it's so discouraging because 00:11:43.47\00:11:49.57 we know that this person who has that... has a high 00:11:49.60\00:11:54.01 likelihood of dying with it, a 95% chance of 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.78 dying with the cancer. 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.30 And so it's SO discouraging to make this diagnosis when 00:11:59.34\00:12:03.42 it's in this stage. 00:12:03.45\00:12:04.53 It's just so fatal... 00:12:04.54\00:12:06.28 Yes. Now smoking is known to be associated... 00:12:06.31\00:12:09.85 What about other things that smoking is... 00:12:09.88\00:12:13.84 You know, that's a very interesting thing... 00:12:13.87\00:12:16.03 Nowadays, it is well known. 00:12:16.06\00:12:18.68 Back 40 years ago, it wasn't well-appreciated, 00:12:18.71\00:12:23.37 that smoking caused lung cancer. 00:12:23.40\00:12:25.84 BUT, one thing that I think is not generally known, 00:12:25.85\00:12:31.19 I saw a paper about lung cancer where they related it to 00:12:31.22\00:12:35.28 coffee-drinking or caffeine intake... Ah ha 00:12:35.31\00:12:38.60 And so the association was not as strong as smoking, 00:12:38.63\00:12:43.95 it didn't multiply the risk by 10, but as I remember, 00:12:43.98\00:12:47.12 it was something like 3... 00:12:47.15\00:12:48.32 so it's a significant factor as well as smoking... I should say 00:12:48.35\00:12:51.72 That's 300% more and that's a significant amount. 00:12:51.73\00:12:56.62 Then other bad habits as well can increase one's 00:12:56.65\00:13:00.20 likelihood of getting cancer of the lung, 00:13:00.23\00:13:02.30 or cancer in any other place. 00:13:02.33\00:13:03.90 So that we can say that as you add bad health habits, 00:13:03.93\00:13:07.62 you increase your risk of getting almost every 00:13:07.65\00:13:10.06 kind of cancer. 00:13:10.09\00:13:11.14 So if you smoke 1 or 2 cigarettes a day, 00:13:11.17\00:13:13.75 you think very good about yourself... 00:13:13.78\00:13:15.27 "I only smoke 2 or 3 cigarettes a day" 00:13:15.30\00:13:17.86 "It's not enough to give me lung cancer" 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.50 But if you also drink coffee... 00:13:19.51\00:13:21.54 If you're also a big, heavy sweet eater... 00:13:21.57\00:13:25.01 If you're also a person who eats a lot of the 00:13:25.04\00:13:27.97 "growth-promoting" foods, 00:13:27.98\00:13:30.06 then pretty soon, you've got a situation where you've 00:13:30.09\00:13:33.33 added one cancer-producing agent after another. 00:13:33.36\00:13:36.11 Then you live in a smoggy area and you've got the stage set. 00:13:36.14\00:13:41.21 That's it. All these things are tipping the balance 00:13:41.24\00:13:44.76 in the wrong direction and you don't know 00:13:44.79\00:13:46.85 when it's enough to tip it. 00:13:46.88\00:13:49.36 What about cancer of the skin? 00:13:49.39\00:13:51.45 Do you have anything special about cancer of the skin? 00:13:51.48\00:13:55.41 Well, cancer of the skin is interesting in that it's 00:13:55.44\00:14:01.70 the most common cancer of all apparently. 00:14:01.73\00:14:04.98 I recently read that... and I've seen it... 00:14:05.01\00:14:09.79 in my own family... cancer of the skin has occurred 00:14:09.82\00:14:12.45 and among acquaintances I have. 00:14:12.48\00:14:14.56 The interesting thing that the public, I think is generally 00:14:14.57\00:14:20.96 aware of and have been bombarded about is that 00:14:20.99\00:14:25.50 sunlight will cause skin cancer and there is no doubt 00:14:25.53\00:14:30.23 about it. 00:14:30.26\00:14:31.35 If a person is exposed excessively to the sun, 00:14:31.38\00:14:35.17 then you're certainly increasing your risk of skin cancer. 00:14:35.20\00:14:38.66 Now, I think at that point, we should say something... 00:14:38.69\00:14:43.65 and it's that they've really shown it clearly to be related 00:14:43.68\00:14:47.69 to sunburns. Ah ha... 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.75 NOT to just being out in the sun, but when you 00:14:49.78\00:14:52.99 go to the point of burning your skin, then you are 00:14:53.02\00:14:55.21 increasing your risk of skin cancer. 00:14:55.24\00:14:58.92 But there's another point here... 00:14:58.95\00:15:00.75 that I think is NOT generally appreciated and it's this... 00:15:00.78\00:15:04.91 that if diet is changed, it changes your risk of skin cancer 00:15:04.94\00:15:11.92 There was an experiment done in which they took rabbits, 00:15:11.95\00:15:17.50 shaved their backs so that the light could get 00:15:17.51\00:15:21.75 right to the skin. 00:15:21.78\00:15:23.18 They put them in an environment, a cage where 00:15:23.21\00:15:25.57 they had ultraviolet light... 00:15:25.60\00:15:26.84 which is the part of sunlight which causes skin cancer. 00:15:26.87\00:15:29.98 And when they did this with rabbits that were getting 00:15:29.99\00:15:32.97 what could be considered the general American diet 00:15:33.00\00:15:35.21 in rabbit form... 00:15:35.24\00:15:37.03 24% of them got skin cancer. 00:15:37.04\00:15:41.10 They repeated the experiment and all they did was add in 00:15:41.13\00:15:45.81 some vitamin E and some vitamin C... 00:15:45.84\00:15:49.00 And instead of 24%, 0% got skin cancer. 00:15:49.03\00:15:52.22 Is that right? That's amazing. 00:15:52.23\00:15:54.64 So the high fat, high sugar, high salt diet 00:15:54.67\00:15:58.17 does something to promote skin cancer IF the person 00:15:58.20\00:16:03.74 also gets ultraviolet light. That's right. 00:16:03.77\00:16:06.33 And then, of course, most cancers, if not all cancers, 00:16:06.36\00:16:10.06 do have a virus involved in the production of the cancer. 00:16:10.07\00:16:14.16 So then we can say that cancers, 00:16:14.17\00:16:16.40 especially like cancer of the skin... 00:16:16.43\00:16:18.24 we can know that it has a number of things. 00:16:18.27\00:16:20.15 It has the virus, has the diet, it has the sunburning with 00:16:20.18\00:16:25.77 the ultraviolet light and probably has also some 00:16:25.80\00:16:29.59 genetic factors like with people who have blue eyes 00:16:29.62\00:16:34.29 or fair skin, or are exposed a lot to the sun. 00:16:34.32\00:16:39.37 Yes... go ahead... 00:16:39.40\00:16:40.57 Now, I'm wondering on some other specific 00:16:40.58\00:16:46.04 cancer because it is of real interest... 00:16:46.07\00:16:47.59 Cancer, in a way, you can say is many diseases... Yes, many! 00:16:47.62\00:16:50.46 It's really not just one disease. 00:16:50.50\00:16:52.90 Regarding women, you've done a lot of work on women's 00:16:52.93\00:16:59.12 diseases and problems. 00:16:59.15\00:17:00.38 Would there be something that we could know about preventing 00:17:00.41\00:17:05.15 or related to say... ovarian cancer? 00:17:05.16\00:17:07.84 Yes, there are some things. 00:17:07.87\00:17:09.96 We know, as an example, that if a woman takes 00:17:09.99\00:17:14.99 fermented dairy products like yogurt... as much as 00:17:15.02\00:17:19.07 3 or 4 times a week, that increases her risk of getting 00:17:19.10\00:17:22.25 cancer of the ovary. 00:17:22.28\00:17:23.42 We also know that women who drink coffee will also 00:17:23.45\00:17:28.05 have an increased risk of getting cancer of the ovary 00:17:28.08\00:17:31.26 And some research is being done that implicates a number 00:17:31.29\00:17:35.74 of other foods in the American cuisine which most of us 00:17:35.77\00:17:41.27 have had from childhood up... 00:17:41.30\00:17:43.37 that can encourage cancer of the ovaries. 00:17:43.40\00:17:45.93 But a well-done plant-based diet is known to be protective 00:17:45.96\00:17:52.26 for cancer of the ovary... which is a very serious cancer... 00:17:52.29\00:17:55.37 Once it has been discovered, it is usually too late 00:17:55.40\00:17:58.41 to operate on it and take the ovary out. 00:17:58.44\00:18:01.42 So with cancer of the ovary, the diet is a big factor 00:18:01.45\00:18:06.72 and other things in lifestyles... 00:18:06.75\00:18:08.16 Smoking is another factor. 00:18:08.19\00:18:10.57 And taking of hormones is another factor in ovarian cancer 00:18:10.60\00:18:18.22 Then another BIG cancer that we have is cancer of the colon. 00:18:18.25\00:18:22.44 And I mentioned that when my mother was diagnosed 00:18:22.47\00:18:25.17 with cancer of the colon, I made some big changes 00:18:25.20\00:18:28.60 in my lifestyle. 00:18:28.63\00:18:30.55 You've seen a lot of people with cancer of the colon... 00:18:30.58\00:18:33.06 What factors do you have about cancer 00:18:33.09\00:18:35.90 of the colon you'd like to mention? 00:18:35.93\00:18:37.73 The feature of colon cancer that has impressed me the most 00:18:37.77\00:18:42.67 is tied in with the name of a missionary that went to Africa 00:18:42.70\00:18:48.43 Burkett... Dr. Burkett Oh Yes... yes 00:18:48.44\00:18:52.21 He noted... There's a fairly involved story but to 00:18:52.24\00:18:56.86 shorten it down, he noted that in going from his 00:18:56.89\00:19:00.30 home in England, down to Africa, certain diseases didn't 00:19:00.33\00:19:02.98 occur at all... among the people that did live primitively. 00:19:03.01\00:19:06.30 Now they were there among those that lived in the cities 00:19:06.33\00:19:08.38 in Africa... one of those diseases was colon cancer. 00:19:08.41\00:19:11.77 And the crucial factor that he showed clearly was involved 00:19:11.80\00:19:16.10 was when there was low fiber in the food... 00:19:16.13\00:19:20.15 then there was high chance, high risk of colon cancer... 00:19:20.16\00:19:23.47 And this, of course, is the way in a modern society 00:19:23.50\00:19:26.13 many people eat... 00:19:26.16\00:19:27.26 All those hamburgers, all the soda pop... 00:19:27.29\00:19:30.25 There's no fiber in those things 00:19:30.28\00:19:32.02 And so there is not much that promotes the movement 00:19:32.05\00:19:34.90 in clearing out of those poisons that are collecting 00:19:34.93\00:19:37.43 in the colon. 00:19:37.46\00:19:38.73 Whereas, when you eat a natural diet, whole foods, 00:19:38.76\00:19:42.44 plant foods... they have lots of fiber and it passes out 00:19:42.47\00:19:48.68 and gets rid of those poisons that promote colon cancer. 00:19:48.71\00:19:52.41 In fact, he had a curious little law that he made from that... 00:19:52.44\00:19:55.09 It was this... just before saying the law, 00:19:55.12\00:20:00.56 When a person eats a high fiber diet, you do have a larger 00:20:00.59\00:20:04.06 amount of stool being produced. 00:20:04.09\00:20:06.24 And his law was this... 00:20:06.27\00:20:08.46 "The amount of stool production in any community 00:20:08.49\00:20:12.67 was inversely related to the size of their hospitals. " 00:20:12.70\00:20:15.76 Is that right? 00:20:15.79\00:20:17.58 Well I could certainly believe that because we know that 00:20:17.61\00:20:19.97 a high fiber diet also helps with a high blood cholesterol 00:20:20.00\00:20:25.15 and that would help us with heart health. 00:20:25.18\00:20:27.92 And, you know, concerning cancer... 00:20:27.93\00:20:29.78 there are certain organs of the body that tend to not 00:20:29.81\00:20:35.29 get cancer... like the spleen 00:20:35.32\00:20:37.58 You almost never see the spleen having a cancer, 00:20:37.61\00:20:42.11 except in certain very specific hematologic cancers. 00:20:42.14\00:20:49.66 And the heart... it just almost never... 00:20:49.67\00:20:53.30 except in a congenital disorder called "tuberous sclerosis" 00:20:53.33\00:20:57.53 I have very RARELY ever seen a cancer of the heart itself. 00:20:57.56\00:21:03.09 And in some countries, they just don't have 00:21:03.10\00:21:05.28 cancer of the colon. 00:21:05.31\00:21:06.69 To us, in this country, that's remarkable because we 00:21:06.72\00:21:09.84 expect that a large percentage of our population will 00:21:09.87\00:21:13.59 come down with cancer of the colon. 00:21:13.62\00:21:15.34 So we need to look at the life style of these countries 00:21:15.35\00:21:18.52 where they simply don't have it, 00:21:18.55\00:21:20.29 and study that and implement some of the things that they do. 00:21:20.32\00:21:28.35 There are a number of other cancers that we have here 00:21:28.38\00:21:30.70 and I was just wondering about cancer of the pancreas. 00:21:30.73\00:21:35.57 You know, I'm going to kick that one back... 00:21:35.60\00:21:37.71 All right... I wanted to say one little point about cancer 00:21:37.72\00:21:40.19 that to me is very interesting. 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.71 We're back to skin cancer... Ah ha 00:21:42.74\00:21:44.51 If you compare people living in the tropics and those 00:21:44.54\00:21:52.33 that live in northern latitudes where they get much less 00:21:52.34\00:21:54.55 sunlight, the people in the tropics do get more skin cancer 00:21:54.58\00:21:58.93 The ones in the northern latitudes get these terrible 00:21:58.96\00:22:02.40 cancers like pancreatic cancer and other internal cancers 00:22:02.43\00:22:07.65 And the total mortality from cancer is higher in the 00:22:07.68\00:22:11.49 northern latitudes, the people getting less sunlight. 00:22:11.50\00:22:14.74 And so, if you just had to take your pick, 00:22:14.77\00:22:17.40 you would want more sunlight, not less... 00:22:17.41\00:22:19.41 It actually stimulates the immune system. 00:22:19.44\00:22:21.71 And one, I think, very interesting point here is 00:22:21.74\00:22:25.07 in cancer, I think everyone is aware that the crucial 00:22:25.10\00:22:28.62 thing to do is to diagnose early... Ah ha 00:22:28.65\00:22:30.91 That's why pancreatic cancer is so terrible... 00:22:30.94\00:22:33.39 and ovarian cancer... Absolutely 00:22:33.42\00:22:35.46 I remember patients coming with those diseases... 00:22:35.49\00:22:38.63 It's just sad because usually it's too advanced. 00:22:38.66\00:22:41.47 Too deep in, we don't recognize until it's too late 00:22:41.50\00:22:45.97 and they are not something that is like the colon 00:22:46.00\00:22:49.23 where we would have some dysfunction that would help 00:22:49.24\00:22:51.66 us to know... With the pancreas and with 00:22:51.69\00:22:54.28 the ovaries, we don't recognize any dysfunction 00:22:54.31\00:22:57.74 and so they get far advanced cancers way beyond our help. 00:22:57.77\00:23:00.19 So if sunlight can help stimulate the immune system, 00:23:02.10\00:23:06.49 and, therefore, help avoid some of these cancers, 00:23:06.52\00:23:11.13 tremendous! 00:23:11.16\00:23:13.19 Now, if you're going to get a cancer... 00:23:13.20\00:23:14.69 which would be the easiest diagnosed? 00:23:14.72\00:23:16.19 Skin cancer... "Well, I don't drink, so 00:24:33.02\00:24:35.35 I won't get cancer of the pancreas. " 00:24:35.36\00:24:37.39 Well, unfortunately, there is some research being 00:24:37.42\00:24:40.82 done now... A researcher, I believe he lives in Kentucky 00:24:40.85\00:24:44.94 ...is doing some research in which he has found that the 00:24:44.97\00:24:49.01 average American, with the kind of lifestyle that we have, 00:24:49.04\00:24:52.95 with eating between meals and eating too many varieties 00:24:52.98\00:24:55.60 at a meal... too many dishes served at a meal 00:24:55.63\00:24:59.23 And, we eat too much, that this kind of lifestyle with 00:24:59.26\00:25:06.41 not a lot of exercise either, will promote the production 00:25:06.44\00:25:10.54 of about 1 quart of beer every day. 00:25:10.57\00:25:14.74 Well that's a good bit of alcohol that the individual 00:25:14.77\00:25:17.77 would produce himself... just from those things that 00:25:17.80\00:25:21.77 he, himself, will be engaged in just in his ordinary lifestyle. 00:25:21.80\00:25:28.57 Then, in addition to that, having diabetes will encourage 00:25:28.60\00:25:32.22 having cancer of the pancreas. 00:25:32.25\00:25:34.58 Now another cancer that I'd like to tell you about is 00:25:34.61\00:25:38.35 that of cancer of the stomach. 00:25:38.38\00:25:40.02 The stomach is a very ABUSED organ. 00:25:40.05\00:25:43.23 This abused organ is likely to get various kinds of problems... 00:25:43.26\00:25:49.65 Gastritis is one. 00:25:49.68\00:25:51.84 Peptic ulcers is another. 00:25:51.85\00:25:54.70 And then cancer of the stomach is another very 00:25:54.73\00:25:57.71 serious cancer of people... 00:25:57.74\00:26:00.10 And it also may not give early warning signs... 00:26:00.13\00:26:04.85 So that when the cancer of the stomach is discovered, 00:26:04.88\00:26:07.41 it may be fairly far advanced. 00:26:07.44\00:26:09.49 We know that in countries of the world where they 00:26:09.52\00:26:12.43 eat a lot of spicy foods and fermented foods, 00:26:12.46\00:26:19.39 vinegary foods, and other foods that are 00:26:19.42\00:26:22.21 irritating to the stomach, that in these countries, 00:26:22.24\00:26:25.60 they are more likely to get cancer of the stomach. 00:26:25.63\00:26:29.04 Those countries of the world where they are the highest 00:26:29.07\00:26:32.35 in the use of these very irritating spices like... 00:26:32.38\00:26:36.30 cayenne pepper... they eat it every day in large quantities 00:26:36.33\00:26:39.26 and ginger, cinnamon and cloves and the like... 00:26:39.29\00:26:42.83 And they eat it in LARGE quantities. 00:26:42.86\00:26:44.99 In these countries, they are more likely to get cancer of the 00:26:45.03\00:26:50.22 back of the throat, and the esophagus and the stomach. 00:26:50.26\00:26:53.66 Now, as we concentrate on these cancers, 00:26:53.69\00:26:58.28 we can see that lifestyle is very heavily involved. 00:26:58.31\00:27:02.48 We have mentioned a number of these things in just 00:27:02.51\00:27:04.91 this one short program. 00:27:04.94\00:27:06.70 And we have, by no means, covered the entire gamut. 00:27:06.73\00:27:10.22 Probably the best place that a person could read about 00:27:10.25\00:27:13.63 lifestyle and the kind of lifestyle that would be the 00:27:13.64\00:27:17.23 most advantageous for good health and to avoid 00:27:17.26\00:27:20.64 such diseases as cancer, would be a book called 00:27:20.67\00:27:24.58 "Ministry of Healing" which covers the entire gamut 00:27:24.61\00:27:28.53 of lifestyle problems and can be a most beneficial adjunct 00:27:28.56\00:27:35.29 to the information that you, yourself have, that can 00:27:35.32\00:27:38.97 help you to develop in yourself that kind of lifestyle 00:27:39.00\00:27:43.39 to give you RESISTANCE against serious diseases 00:27:43.42\00:27:47.37 that can threaten your life. 00:27:47.40\00:27:49.29 Our Heavenly Father desires above ALL THINGS 00:27:49.30\00:27:52.23 that we may prosper and be in health. 00:27:52.24\00:27:55.36 May God bless you. 00:27:55.39\00:27:56.36
