Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.13 I'm Agatha Thrash from Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:04.16\00:00:06.79 a place where we try to help people take more responsibility 00:00:06.82\00:00:11.37 for their own health. 00:00:11.40\00:00:12.78 During this next half-an-hour, 00:00:12.81\00:00:15.13 we'll be talking with you about some things having to do 00:00:15.16\00:00:17.77 with the health and some of the diseases of the genital organs, 00:00:17.80\00:00:24.14 so we hope you will join us for this program. 00:00:24.17\00:00:27.13 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:47.69\00:00:51.82 of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:51.85\00:00:53.93 And now, here's your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:53.96\00:00:59.16 We can be constantly amazed at the way that God has provided 00:00:59.19\00:01:05.96 for our needs to protect our health. 00:01:05.99\00:01:10.46 It's a very firm doctrine of the Bible that God wants 00:01:10.49\00:01:16.24 us to be in health and that He has made every provision 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.87 for that. 00:01:19.90\00:01:20.87 Just take such things as the air that we breathe and 00:01:20.88\00:01:24.17 the temperature of the air, the sun that comes so freely to us, 00:01:24.20\00:01:29.67 and the plants that are everywhere. 00:01:29.70\00:01:33.63 And many of these have foods that they produce that are ours 00:01:33.66\00:01:37.89 free for the taking, like many of the berries and a lot 00:01:37.92\00:01:40.88 of the nuts. 00:01:40.91\00:01:42.16 And I'd like to talk with you about some of these foods now 00:01:42.19\00:01:46.14 and just what they do. 00:01:46.17\00:01:48.33 I have a review here of some of the plants that are used 00:01:48.36\00:01:55.10 in epilepsy... in the treatment of epilepsy. 00:01:55.13\00:01:57.43 In other countries of the world, 00:01:57.46\00:01:59.12 they are a little bit advanced over us than this country 00:01:59.15\00:02:01.99 in the treatment of epilepsy using plants and 00:02:02.02\00:02:05.86 here is one in the United Kingdom... 00:02:05.89\00:02:08.89 plants that are known for their anticonvulsant activity. 00:02:08.92\00:02:14.33 Let me just read a small paragraph from this report 00:02:14.36\00:02:17.95 that came out in the medical journal called, "Seizure" 00:02:17.98\00:02:21.81 in the year 2000. 00:02:21.84\00:02:24.09 It was in the month of September if anyone wants to take a look 00:02:24.12\00:02:28.86 at this article. 00:02:28.89\00:02:29.86 "Many plants are known for their anticonvulsant activity. 00:02:29.87\00:02:33.68 Various phytochemicals... now a phytochemical is simply a 00:02:33.71\00:02:38.72 nutrient or a chemical or sometimes a medicine 00:02:38.75\00:02:42.49 that comes from a plant... "phyto" means plant. 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.30 So, these are plant chemicals, and pharmacologic studies... 00:02:45.33\00:02:49.53 phytochemical and pharmacologic studies have been carried out 00:02:49.56\00:02:52.53 on these anticonvulsant plants. 00:02:52.56\00:02:56.23 In fact, a review article was previously published with regard 00:02:56.26\00:02:59.90 to plants with anticonvulsant activity. " 00:02:59.93\00:03:03.65 Thus, the aim of this particular group of researchers 00:03:03.68\00:03:07.38 was to review all of this and to add the benefits of their 00:03:07.41\00:03:11.96 research as well. 00:03:11.99\00:03:13.05 Now what they found was that people with epilepsy 00:03:13.08\00:03:17.05 could be benefited by taking a diet high in those foods 00:03:17.08\00:03:21.46 having an anticonvulsant activity. 00:03:21.49\00:03:24.08 Well, that's very interesting and very helpful to know. 00:03:24.11\00:03:28.34 Very helpful for people who have epilepsy. 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.36 We had one patient at Uchee Pines who, after he changed 00:03:31.39\00:03:36.37 to simply a totally vegetarian diet, went for a whole year 00:03:36.40\00:03:40.40 without a seizure, whereas he had been having about 00:03:40.43\00:03:43.97 one seizure per week. 00:03:44.00\00:03:46.54 Then he had another seizure and it was discovered that he 00:03:46.57\00:03:49.01 had eaten something that he was sensitive to that 00:03:49.04\00:03:52.65 made him have another seizure. 00:03:52.68\00:03:54.44 I wish I could say that all people with epilepsy 00:03:54.47\00:03:57.00 would respond just as nicely. 00:03:57.03\00:03:59.03 But we can't say that, not all people will and, in fact, 00:03:59.06\00:04:02.80 in the study that I was just telling you about, 00:04:02.83\00:04:05.04 not all of the patients responded to the plant-based 00:04:05.07\00:04:09.33 diet and those plants that are known to have anticonvulsant 00:04:09.36\00:04:12.49 activity. 00:04:12.52\00:04:13.91 Then, here is some work on plants that have an 00:04:13.94\00:04:20.91 antiviral effect. 00:04:20.94\00:04:23.12 The elderberries... 00:04:23.15\00:04:24.83 Elderberry plant grows in sort of marshy areas in many places 00:04:24.86\00:04:29.71 of the United States and these berries have an antiviral effect 00:04:29.74\00:04:35.24 So a person about to take a cold can take some of these berries 00:04:35.27\00:04:40.15 and it's a very great help to them. 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.53 These same berries have an insulin-like effect and so 00:04:42.56\00:04:47.38 it's been found that people who have diabetes will respond 00:04:47.41\00:04:51.46 nicely to the elderberries. 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.68 Then, here's a report about people having a reduction in 00:04:54.71\00:04:59.59 cholesterol by having plants or plant foods that are high 00:04:59.62\00:05:05.12 in the plant sterols. 00:05:05.15\00:05:07.99 "Sterols," now that's a word that's very similar to 00:05:08.02\00:05:10.69 some words which we are familiar having to do with 00:05:10.72\00:05:14.55 hormones, like estrogen. 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.85 The "strogen" part is really a little take-off on sterol 00:05:16.88\00:05:22.03 or steroidal substances. 00:05:22.06\00:05:24.81 Of course we know that steroids come from the adrenal gland 00:05:24.84\00:05:29.35 as well. 00:05:29.38\00:05:30.37 And then the testes also produce testosterone and the 00:05:30.40\00:05:34.13 sterone part is part of the sterols. 00:05:34.16\00:05:37.28 So, there are many plants that have sterols in them... 00:05:37.31\00:05:40.70 common plants, like apples and tomatoes and cherries and beans 00:05:40.73\00:05:45.30 especially soybeans, and all the nuts and all the whole grains. 00:05:45.33\00:05:50.59 They all have the plant sterols and they have a very protective 00:05:50.62\00:05:54.16 effect for us against the overproduction of such hormones 00:05:54.19\00:05:59.49 as testosterone and estrogens in the human body. 00:05:59.52\00:06:04.27 So these plants protect us against the over-stimulatory 00:06:04.30\00:06:08.18 effect of some of these. 00:06:08.21\00:06:10.49 And then, of course, certain vegetable proteins 00:06:10.52\00:06:14.05 and certain fibers help to lower the blood cholesterol. 00:06:14.08\00:06:19.14 Very interesting things having to do with plants and their 00:06:19.17\00:06:24.14 specific effects... 00:06:24.17\00:06:26.03 Effects that were there from the very beginning of 00:06:26.06\00:06:31.36 the life of these plants... when the Lord made them back 00:06:31.39\00:06:35.93 before the Garden of Eden... when He made them in the 00:06:35.96\00:06:39.87 first week of Creation. 00:06:39.90\00:06:42.15 At that time, He put these chemicals in there... 00:06:42.18\00:06:45.40 these phytochemicals in these plants so that they could be 00:06:45.43\00:06:49.26 a great help to us. 00:06:49.29\00:06:51.64 Now here is a report on "ginkgo biloba" 00:06:51.67\00:06:55.72 This is a plant that comes from a tree... a leaf that comes 00:06:55.75\00:06:59.86 from a tree and the ginkgo biloba has been used in 00:06:59.89\00:07:04.17 the treatment of memory... 00:07:04.20\00:07:05.69 and many reports will show that it's good for the memory... 00:07:05.72\00:07:09.29 an occasional report will show that it had no effect on 00:07:09.32\00:07:13.06 the memory... but I think we should pay attention to those 00:07:13.10\00:07:17.76 great majority of reports that do show that ginkgo biloba 00:07:17.79\00:07:22.42 has a good effect on the memory. 00:07:22.45\00:07:24.44 In fact, people that I have talked with recognize 00:07:24.47\00:07:28.01 that it has helped them... 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.42 And, I look at it this way, 00:07:29.45\00:07:31.53 if it's a placebo effect and it helps them... fine. 00:07:31.56\00:07:35.20 The placebo effect is one thing that God has given us... 00:07:35.23\00:07:38.45 It's not something that we generate ourselves, 00:07:38.48\00:07:40.89 and so, if it helps us by placebo effect, 00:07:40.92\00:07:43.83 I'm very happy with that, if it's a help, it's a help. 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.73 But this one showed that ringing in the ears, 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.63 in 4 of the 5 reports that are summarized here in this article, 00:07:49.66\00:07:55.06 they showed that ringing in the ears was helped by ginkgo biloba 00:07:55.09\00:07:59.48 Sometimes people will not use a great enough quantity 00:07:59.51\00:08:03.73 to make it helpful. 00:08:03.76\00:08:06.32 But, if we use enough and not too much, 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.61 then we can be helped by the ginkgo biloba. 00:08:09.64\00:08:13.43 Now, we know that there are certain plant chemicals 00:08:13.46\00:08:16.93 that can help various... of our genital organs such as 00:08:16.96\00:08:20.96 the breasts, the ovaries, the prostate, the uterus and 00:08:20.99\00:08:26.74 those organs that have to do with reproduction. 00:08:26.77\00:08:29.94 And I have asked Dr. Winn Horsley, who is 00:08:29.97\00:08:32.43 one of my colleagues at Uchee Pines, if he would assist me 00:08:32.46\00:08:35.81 in talking some about these things having to do with 00:08:35.84\00:08:39.80 women's disorders, like fibroids and menopause. 00:08:39.83\00:08:45.17 What would you like to tell us about that would be helpful 00:08:45.20\00:08:48.85 to our listeners about these problems. 00:08:48.88\00:08:52.60 Well, you've already given a number of the foods that I 00:08:52.63\00:08:56.52 even had on my list here regarding that. 00:08:56.55\00:09:00.55 This is quite an interesting topic, and I believe even the 00:09:00.58\00:09:06.38 approach at Uchee Pines has changed in the past years. 00:09:06.41\00:09:09.51 Now, what one could say is that these phytosterols 00:09:09.54\00:09:14.69 that are acting as a gentle hormone... 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.85 In the case of menopause, you're getting a gentle female hormone 00:09:17.88\00:09:24.73 effect, so that when the hormones from the ovaries 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.12 for instance, have basically shut down, then you're still 00:09:28.15\00:09:31.76 getting a little bit of gentle hormonal stimulation. 00:09:31.79\00:09:35.72 And so it's clear there, why the person would feel better. 00:09:35.75\00:09:39.01 There would not be an abrupt change in the hormonal 00:09:39.04\00:09:41.60 pattern... not so abrupt a change. 00:09:41.63\00:09:45.69 But, here's another situation, a woman who has fibroids 00:09:45.72\00:09:51.95 in the uterus which are definitely affected by the level 00:09:51.98\00:09:56.28 of female hormones in the blood, or for that matter, 00:09:56.31\00:09:59.59 breast cancer... which often, they nowadays check the 00:09:59.62\00:10:02.87 sensitivity even to estrogens and progesterone... 00:10:02.90\00:10:06.12 Many of them are sensitive to those levels. 00:10:06.15\00:10:08.70 Well, one used to think that then those foods that have those 00:10:08.73\00:10:15.05 phytosterols, we should avoid them completely because... 00:10:15.08\00:10:18.88 Yes... that was our thought in the beginning... That's right. 00:10:18.91\00:10:20.37 And then, it became clear, gradually, that in fact, 00:10:20.40\00:10:25.19 if you have those phytosterols, they block the heavy stimulation 00:10:25.22\00:10:29.95 that occurs from one's own strong hormones... 00:10:29.98\00:10:35.12 and so you get a tremendous benefit by having those. 00:10:35.15\00:10:37.79 It's quite the opposite of what one might've thought originally 00:10:37.82\00:10:40.88 And while we can say that the strength of the stimulus of 00:10:40.91\00:10:45.57 these native hormones is strong, the plant sterols are also 00:10:45.60\00:10:52.54 effective and they can affect us in a way that we can alter 00:10:52.57\00:10:58.31 the menopausal syndrome symptoms. 00:10:58.34\00:11:03.02 I remember reading about a case that perhaps you... 00:11:03.05\00:11:07.43 someone at Uchee Pines did a nutrition for vegetarians with 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.94 an older woman where it actually brought about 00:11:09.97\00:11:12.77 a hormonal effect in her. 00:11:12.80\00:11:16.61 Yes, that was Dr. Calvin Thrash who did that experiment. 00:11:16.64\00:11:19.60 The woman came with some problem. 00:11:19.63\00:11:24.13 I don't remember what her basic problem was but... 00:11:24.16\00:11:26.29 She also had not had a menstrual period for 4 years. 00:11:26.32\00:11:33.63 And so he was wondering if it would be possible to reduce the 00:11:33.66\00:11:38.76 plant sterols in her diet and induce her to have a little 00:11:38.79\00:11:44.41 bleeding of menstrual type. 00:11:44.44\00:11:47.31 Because the thing that causes the monthly bleeding is a fall 00:11:47.34\00:11:51.88 in the female hormones. 00:11:51.91\00:11:53.82 So he thought... he reasoned if he could remove all the plant 00:11:53.85\00:11:57.12 sterols, maybe she would have a little bleeding. 00:11:57.15\00:12:00.26 So, he did just that. 00:12:00.29\00:12:02.00 I remember the struggle that we had to eliminate all the 00:12:02.03\00:12:05.98 foods that had plant sterols in them... they are so 00:12:06.01\00:12:09.30 abundant in so many foods... so many plant foods and still we 00:12:09.33\00:12:15.52 didn't want to go to a meat based diet for her and 00:12:15.55\00:12:18.15 milk-based diet. 00:12:18.18\00:12:19.29 So we fashioned a diet for her and we had a cutoff date... 00:12:19.32\00:12:25.59 And, sure enough, 4 days later, she had a tiny little 00:12:25.62\00:12:29.83 menstrual bleeding... Interesting 00:12:29.86\00:12:31.92 She was a very good guinea pig for that. 00:12:31.95\00:12:35.52 That was our first try on that. 00:12:35.55\00:12:39.44 I wanted to mention, there are some that actually are quite 00:12:39.47\00:12:45.20 concentrated in the amount of phytosterols that there are. 00:12:45.23\00:12:52.31 In this little list that I made just a couple of days ago, 00:12:52.34\00:12:56.89 it had some of the fruits that you mentioned... apples, 00:12:56.92\00:13:01.40 cherries, and then other foods, olives, and so on... 00:13:01.43\00:13:06.19 But the one that, in the list of foods, that had the largest 00:13:06.22\00:13:12.75 number of milligrams per, say 100 grams, was... 00:13:12.78\00:13:18.27 if you set aside ones that are just very rare, bizarre things 00:13:18.30\00:13:23.04 like chestnut oil and so on... that kind of thing. 00:13:23.07\00:13:27.48 The one that really was at the top, I would say, is sesames 00:13:27.51\00:13:31.66 and sesame oil which is a large constituent of sesame seeds... 00:13:31.69\00:13:36.95 So, that was one... was sesame seeds. 00:13:36.98\00:13:42.03 I don't think most people use sesame oil alone directly, 00:13:42.06\00:13:47.09 but if you use tahini, which is a very popular product, 00:13:47.12\00:13:49.75 a large percentage of tahini is the oil. 00:13:49.78\00:13:52.13 That's sesame butter... That's sesame butter, so 00:13:52.16\00:13:55.19 in that, you are getting possibly the most concentrated 00:13:55.22\00:13:59.28 form of the phytosterols of all the more common foods. 00:13:59.31\00:14:03.49 So, since our postulate is that taking these phytosterols 00:14:03.52\00:14:09.31 will protect you against prostate cancer or breast cancer 00:14:09.34\00:14:13.55 then it would be good for us to encourage people to take 00:14:13.58\00:14:17.70 these foods. 00:14:17.73\00:14:18.70 I think so... I agree. 00:14:18.71\00:14:20.40 And besides that, they're good foods... Oh, they are 00:14:20.43\00:14:24.98 I have one objection for myself about tahini butter 00:14:25.01\00:14:27.88 I can't help but think that my reaction to tahini, 00:14:27.91\00:14:31.24 the sesame butter... where I get pimples in my nose and so on 00:14:31.27\00:14:36.13 that either that particular oil has an awfully much stronger 00:14:36.16\00:14:42.01 effect than other oils on me, 00:14:42.04\00:14:43.11 OR, there actually is enough of those phytosterols to be 00:14:43.14\00:14:45.75 producing like an adolescent reaction. 00:14:45.78\00:14:47.99 Acne-type products... That's right. 00:14:48.02\00:14:49.21 That's interesting. 00:14:49.24\00:14:50.21 A second one down among very common foods... 00:14:50.22\00:14:54.06 In fact, perhaps right up at the top of common foods in the world 00:14:54.09\00:14:58.23 although we don't eat so much rice, the Orientals eat 00:14:58.26\00:15:01.26 tremendous amounts and rice bran is very high 00:15:01.29\00:15:05.48 in phytosterols. 00:15:05.51\00:15:07.53 You know, that reminds me that certainly in the Orient, 00:15:07.56\00:15:10.86 you will find rice and sesame seed in a preparation. 00:15:10.89\00:15:16.62 And, almost every table in the Orient will be... 00:15:16.65\00:15:21.13 ...in restaurants at least, and in the private homes where 00:15:21.16\00:15:24.38 I have visited, they have these little sesame seed mills 00:15:24.41\00:15:27.87 that you just hold it over your foods sort of like a peppermill 00:15:27.90\00:15:31.62 and grind out the sesame seed at whatever... you can 00:15:31.65\00:15:36.15 put them out whole, dispense them whole, 00:15:36.18\00:15:38.02 or you can put them out ground 00:15:38.05\00:15:40.39 And just do that over your rice or do that over your 00:15:40.42\00:15:43.92 stir fries and you'll get sesame seed there. 00:15:43.95\00:15:47.31 You know, looking at this, just in the last few days 00:15:47.34\00:15:52.09 has made me re-think this issue of Japanese women 00:15:52.12\00:15:56.96 You've heard about this, 00:15:56.99\00:15:57.98 that apparently in the Japanese language, 00:15:58.01\00:15:59.85 there's not even a word for menopause... 00:15:59.88\00:16:01.69 And that they have so little of any particular change 00:16:01.72\00:16:06.67 at that... what we call change of life 00:16:06.70\00:16:10.17 And you know, dramatic thing... all kinds of magazine articles 00:16:10.20\00:16:12.88 about it. 00:16:12.91\00:16:14.85 I and I think many people have attributed that to their use of 00:16:14.88\00:16:18.74 tofu or soy products... 00:16:18.77\00:16:20.08 And there is no question that that has some effect. 00:16:20.11\00:16:22.46 But I think that there is more than just soy that's 00:16:22.49\00:16:24.43 part of that because of their use of sesame and of rice. 00:16:24.46\00:16:29.45 Yes. Well certainly rice is an excellent food too. 00:16:29.48\00:16:32.74 It has a good quality protein. 00:16:32.77\00:16:35.01 It doesn't have a lot... 00:16:35.04\00:16:36.41 I think about 2.5 or 3 or maybe 4 grams/100 grams of rice... 00:16:36.44\00:16:42.90 But the quality is SO good that if you get almost any other kind 00:16:42.93\00:16:47.07 of food in your diet, you're going to get a good quality 00:16:47.10\00:16:50.48 protein with rice in the diet. 00:16:50.51\00:16:52.90 Now you were telling me a little earlier that, concerning the 00:16:52.93\00:16:57.10 prostate, there are some exercises that a man can do 00:16:57.13\00:17:02.79 that can help with the prostate. 00:17:02.82\00:17:05.38 Yes, I think we should call on Don Miller to give us a little 00:17:05.41\00:17:11.99 demonstration of some of the things. 00:17:12.02\00:17:14.64 Prostate congestion really probably is a big problem. 00:17:14.67\00:17:19.21 Maybe it's a background, I'm not sure that enough research 00:17:19.24\00:17:22.32 has been done on this. 00:17:22.35\00:17:24.40 One thing that has been noted and commented on... 00:17:24.43\00:17:28.52 A missionary doctor to India, Paul Brand, a neurosurgeon, 00:17:28.55\00:17:32.70 noted that domestic dogs have often quite a bit of prostate 00:17:32.73\00:17:41.55 trouble and apparently difficulty with urination; 00:17:41.58\00:17:44.20 whereas, when you look at wild dogs, no trouble at all. 00:17:44.23\00:17:46.26 Well the thing about domestic animals, we of course require 00:17:46.29\00:17:48.87 them to not dirty the floor. 00:17:48.90\00:17:51.44 Whereas, an animal out in the wild goes when it wants. 00:17:51.47\00:17:54.57 Which makes one think we should be a little more quick 00:17:54.60\00:17:58.19 in responding to those urges. 00:17:58.22\00:17:59.68 So, if we used the muscles down in the pelvic region, 00:17:59.71\00:18:05.44 contraction and relaxation of those to help with blood flow 00:18:05.47\00:18:11.99 we may be helping those pelvic organs quite a lot. 00:18:12.02\00:18:15.36 And so there are some very simple exercises that have been 00:18:15.39\00:18:18.47 designed specifically for this. 00:18:18.50\00:18:20.20 And I wonder... Don.. 00:18:20.23\00:18:21.23 Don Miller, come right over here and let's see what exercises 00:18:21.26\00:18:24.91 these are. 00:18:24.94\00:18:25.91 I have the outline of a few of them. 00:18:35.27\00:18:36.27 One of them is on all 4's... going down on all 4's 00:18:36.30\00:18:40.72 then one alternately lifts one leg first, like this 00:18:40.75\00:18:46.08 and then lets it down. 00:18:46.11\00:18:47.87 Now when a person does this, 00:18:47.90\00:18:49.55 raise the right one now, Don... 00:18:49.58\00:18:50.88 You're using the buttock muscles to extend the hip, to get the 00:18:50.91\00:18:55.71 leg to go out straight. 00:18:55.74\00:18:57.62 Let it down. 00:18:57.65\00:18:58.62 Okay, alternating like that back and forth is working 00:18:58.63\00:19:05.16 those muscles around the pelvic rim. 00:19:05.19\00:19:09.30 In our book here, it actually talks about if a person is 00:19:09.33\00:19:12.43 having difficulty with urination... 00:19:12.46\00:19:14.22 having a tap running... just that somehow, it has an effect 00:19:14.25\00:19:20.62 in helping a person when they finish, a few times of doing 00:19:20.65\00:19:22.90 this, they'll have an easier urination. 00:19:22.93\00:19:25.42 You know, as I am watching this, I think that women could 00:19:25.45\00:19:28.91 benefit from this as well... I wouldn't doubt it. 00:19:28.94\00:19:31.64 To strengthen the pelvic muscles and to encourage 00:19:31.67\00:19:34.41 circulation there so that they would have less painful 00:19:34.44\00:19:37.87 menstruation. 00:19:37.90\00:19:38.90 Good! Don. 00:19:38.93\00:19:39.91 Now the next one is a simple enough looking thing but I 00:19:39.94\00:19:44.32 don't think it's easy for balance... 00:19:44.35\00:19:45.91 So why don't you stand and show us this one and 00:19:45.94\00:19:48.64 grab me if you need to. 00:19:48.67\00:19:49.75 In this one, you lift one leg and you do some swings 00:19:49.78\00:19:54.42 or circles with the foot and the whole leg on the one side. 00:19:54.45\00:19:59.48 Now this requires quite a bit of exertion in these proximal hip 00:19:59.51\00:20:04.48 muscles... I think that you're doing worse with me holding you 00:20:04.51\00:20:08.73 Okay... and done for several minutes, just before urinating 00:20:08.76\00:20:15.83 this can help with the urination just afterwards. 00:20:15.86\00:20:20.08 One other one, is a curious one. 00:20:20.11\00:20:24.19 The person sits down on the floor and then he's going to 00:20:24.22\00:20:29.75 lift off the floor, so the buttocks are completely clear 00:20:29.78\00:20:32.14 of the floor and then, he goes over to one side... 00:20:32.17\00:20:34.70 He is letting the right buttock touch and then the left 00:20:34.73\00:20:37.89 and going from side to side like this. 00:20:37.92\00:20:41.60 And that pressure down on the pelvic region, on the buttocks, 00:20:41.63\00:20:46.23 can make a difference in terms of fluid flow, and getting 00:20:46.26\00:20:52.46 that whole region to have the circulation going more easily. 00:20:52.49\00:20:59.61 All of these may be a help with this issue of congestion 00:20:59.64\00:21:04.09 in pelvic organs... So thank you very much. 00:21:04.12\00:21:07.28 Yes. Well, I appreciate that and certainly in today's society 00:21:07.31\00:21:13.70 where we have men who do not exercise a lot... 00:21:13.73\00:21:17.65 They are likely to get congestion in the pelvis 00:21:17.68\00:21:21.50 and I can see how these exercises would massage 00:21:21.53\00:21:24.84 the prostate and strengthen the muscles there so that the 00:21:24.87\00:21:29.68 muscles can assist in urination. 00:21:29.71\00:21:33.24 And urination problems are a big symptom. 00:21:33.27\00:21:36.50 Oh, you know, I don't want to say 100% but I would guess 00:21:36.53\00:21:41.93 it's 80% or more of men at some point... as they get to 00:21:41.96\00:21:46.51 and past 60, it becomes an issue... 00:21:46.54\00:21:50.06 Perhaps we should say something about some more of the 00:21:50.09\00:21:53.23 phytochemicals with respect to prostate enlargement... 00:21:53.26\00:21:56.72 Very good... I wish we would because men need to understand 00:21:56.75\00:22:00.44 that we are not powerless against disease. 00:22:00.47\00:22:03.98 There are many things that God has given to us, 00:22:04.01\00:22:06.34 even in this very sinful world that can be helpful. 00:22:06.37\00:22:10.05 So what would you like to tell us? 00:22:10.08\00:22:12.41 Well, you know, there are drugs that are used for this. 00:22:12.44\00:22:16.84 Unfortunately, the drugs, as is almost always the case, 00:22:16.87\00:22:20.73 the drugs will have side effects. 00:22:20.76\00:22:22.98 And since these are drugs affecting an organ that is 00:22:23.01\00:22:27.83 closely connected with reproduction... 00:22:27.86\00:22:29.83 you know there are going to be hormonal side effects and 00:22:29.86\00:22:33.25 side effects in connection with urination and so on. 00:22:33.28\00:22:37.01 They are really undesirable and often there might even be 00:22:37.04\00:22:39.29 other ones like high blood pressure. 00:22:39.32\00:22:41.31 Well, many people have already heard about one of these 00:22:41.34\00:22:46.23 plant products and here I don't think we need to talk about 00:22:46.26\00:22:48.62 phytochemicals. 00:22:48.65\00:22:49.62 The whole herb is well-known. 00:22:49.63\00:22:51.96 It's saw palmetto... 00:22:51.99\00:22:54.03 Saw palmetto grew near my home town in 00:22:54.06\00:22:58.36 Baxley, Georgia where I grew up. 00:22:58.40\00:23:00.53 The word, I think, came from Spanish originally. 00:23:00.56\00:23:03.20 Palmetto means a little palm tree. 00:23:03.23\00:23:05.70 It is a little palm. 00:23:05.73\00:23:07.05 It grows from about this high to 00:23:07.08\00:23:08.05 as high as my head and a little over. 00:23:09.63\00:23:10.63 I've never seen the plant, I'd like to see it sometime. 00:23:10.66\00:23:11.63 Oh, it's beautiful... it has a beautiful flower and then 00:23:11.67\00:23:15.29 the berries form and they are not very nice-tasting berries. 00:23:15.33\00:23:18.81 And I think it is the berries that are used... That's right. 00:23:18.85\00:23:22.30 But the heart of the palm which is right down near the root, is 00:23:22.33\00:23:25.27 delicious... Oh 00:23:25.30\00:23:26.50 High protein and it also is high in plant sterols. 00:23:26.53\00:23:30.28 Saw palmetto would be a first one to mention for this 00:23:30.31\00:23:35.59 difficulty in urination. 00:23:35.62\00:23:36.74 By the way, the symptom that we are talking about with 00:23:36.77\00:23:38.91 prostate enlargement is difficulty initiating that 00:23:38.94\00:23:42.60 stream of urination. 00:23:42.63\00:23:43.60 That's perhaps the most prominent symptom, 00:23:43.61\00:23:46.36 and often called "hesitancy. " 00:23:46.39\00:23:47.85 And then, if that's gets strong enough... 00:23:47.88\00:23:51.45 if that is bad enough, it can be difficult to get urine 00:23:51.48\00:23:54.91 coming at all, and they might have to put in a catheter. 00:23:54.94\00:23:59.92 Other problems can follow that. 00:23:59.95\00:24:02.13 You've got the urine building up and urinary infection and so on. 00:24:02.16\00:24:06.38 There are a number of other symptoms. 00:24:06.41\00:24:07.73 Well, we should mention another plant that really does 00:24:07.76\00:24:11.72 help with this. 00:24:11.75\00:24:12.72 I believe this one is from Africa. 00:24:12.73\00:24:14.63 It's "Pygeum"... I've heard some people pronounce it "piegeum" 00:24:14.66\00:24:21.46 Pygeum, if we want to give a dose... I have one here of 00:24:21.49\00:24:26.27 50 mg twice a day. 00:24:26.30\00:24:28.27 You buy that as a pill or a capsule? 00:24:28.30\00:24:31.12 I've seen it usually in capsules 00:24:31.15\00:24:33.02 I don't know what others think 00:24:33.05\00:24:36.11 but I'm not happy with telling people to use whole capsules 00:24:36.14\00:24:40.03 because of the fact that 90% or more of them 00:24:40.06\00:24:42.61 are made from animal gelatin. 00:24:42.64\00:24:44.14 ...that hasn't been clarified as to its safety.. Yes 00:24:44.17\00:24:48.61 So it's a little bit iffy now. 00:24:48.64\00:24:51.15 If a person can just tolerate dumping the contents 00:24:51.18\00:24:54.07 of the capsule out into something and then taking it 00:24:54.10\00:24:57.18 There are others that have been shown to be of some help. 00:24:57.21\00:25:02.40 I know of "nettles. " 00:25:02.43\00:25:05.96 Nettles do help and so those kind of things are often 00:25:05.99\00:25:11.02 sold in a mixture for men's health. 00:25:11.05\00:25:13.63 I have here a rather long list of various herbal and 00:25:18.38\00:25:26.15 other products that are put together for prostate 00:25:26.18\00:25:30.27 hypertrophy problems. 00:25:30.30\00:25:32.00 There's even an amino acid that is said to give some help. 00:25:32.03\00:25:36.49 You know, if all else fails, does a man sometimes 00:25:36.52\00:25:41.21 have to get an operation for the prostate? 00:25:41.24\00:25:44.55 Well, at times it may be necessary... 00:25:44.58\00:25:48.01 And I certainly wouldn't say that it's never needed. 00:25:48.04\00:25:53.46 There might be some complications of surgery... 00:25:53.49\00:25:57.07 What are those? 00:25:57.10\00:25:59.07 Well, one of the big ones is that in trying to shave out... 00:25:59.10\00:26:06.32 carve out from the inside when you do what's called a 00:26:06.35\00:26:09.45 transurethral resection, 00:26:09.48\00:26:11.19 then you can come too near one of the sphincter muscles that 00:26:11.22\00:26:17.61 hold the urine and, therefore, a person can have incontinence. 00:26:17.64\00:26:21.54 And so, of course, that's a very bothersome problem. 00:26:21.57\00:26:24.86 And then sometimes marital relations can be difficult after 00:26:24.89\00:26:29.81 or impossible after certain types of prostate surgery... 00:26:29.84\00:26:33.52 I don't know whether the one that does the paring or 00:26:33.55\00:26:37.03 the reaming out... I don't know whether that one is associated 00:26:37.06\00:26:40.63 I think probably the most would be with the abdominal, 00:26:40.66\00:26:44.32 or even the ones where they do an open approach 00:26:44.35\00:26:47.62 through skin where they may easily transect 00:26:47.66\00:26:50.59 one of the nerves to the reproductive organs. 00:26:50.63\00:26:53.97 Well, we have just a couple of seconds left. 00:26:54.00\00:26:57.31 Do you have anything special that you would like to... 00:26:57.34\00:27:00.15 more that you would like to add. 00:27:00.18\00:27:02.37 I am just so impressed by this whole topic of phytochemicals 00:27:02.40\00:27:10.22 and the fact that God designed them... 00:27:10.25\00:27:13.22 and that when we think we know all about foods, 00:27:13.25\00:27:17.01 that shows how ignorant we are. 00:27:17.04\00:27:18.99 That's for sure... because I can remember very well 00:27:19.02\00:27:21.72 when physicians everywhere were saying foods have nothing 00:27:21.75\00:27:28.17 to do with cancer. 00:27:28.20\00:27:29.81 They have no influence on cancer... 00:27:29.84\00:27:32.21 Of course, no physician who has been trained in the last 00:27:32.24\00:27:35.19 20 years perhaps, would ever say such a thing... 00:27:35.22\00:27:38.54 because foods now, we are very well aware have a lot to do 00:27:38.57\00:27:43.62 with cancer and with many other things. 00:27:43.65\00:27:45.41 We can just take the list of phytochemicals and make a 00:27:45.44\00:27:49.42 designed diet for people with various diseases. 00:27:49.45\00:27:52.60 We can thank our 00:27:52.63\00:27:53.95 loving, Heavenly Father for that. 00:27:53.98\00:27:54.95
