Hello, I'm Agatha Thrash a staff physician from 00:00:01.98\00:00:04.71 Uchee Pines Institute, and we have a very sobering, 00:00:04.74\00:00:09.05 very distressing problem that we would like to talk with you 00:00:09.08\00:00:12.33 about today and that is the problem of hypertension. 00:00:12.36\00:00:16.91 It has rightly been called a silent killer, 00:00:16.94\00:00:19.85 so for the next half an hour we will be talking about this, 00:00:19.88\00:00:22.54 We hope you will join us. 00:00:22.57\00:00:24.08 Welcome to Help Yourself to Health, 00:00:44.42\00:00:46.89 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute, 00:00:46.93\00:00:50.09 and now here is your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:50.12\00:00:53.27 Most people do not understand what is meant when we say 00:00:55.03\00:00:59.03 High Blood Pressure, in fact High Blood Pressure is defined 00:00:59.06\00:01:03.03 by different individuals in different ways. 00:01:03.06\00:01:05.82 Certain health professionals will call a certain thing 00:01:05.85\00:01:11.08 hypertension when another health professional will call 00:01:11.11\00:01:15.54 something else hypertension. 00:01:15.57\00:01:17.29 This problem is so irregular among physicians and others 00:01:17.32\00:01:24.85 that a few years ago my husband and I wrote this book called 00:01:24.88\00:01:28.22 Hypertension and Natural ways to treat your blood pressure. 00:01:28.25\00:01:32.35 This book covers the entire gamut of things that can be 00:01:32.36\00:01:39.74 done in the home by an individual who is not specially 00:01:39.77\00:01:43.34 trained in doing medical things to control the blood pressure 00:01:43.37\00:01:47.86 and to do what one can to keep from getting blood pressure. 00:01:47.89\00:01:50.87 Those people who have a family history of high blood pressure 00:01:50.90\00:01:56.28 they need to be very careful to watch their lifestyle 00:01:56.31\00:02:00.78 to make certain they don't come down with high blood pressure. 00:02:00.81\00:02:04.75 Now everybody has blood pressure but a lot of times people will 00:02:04.78\00:02:11.27 say, patients will say I have blood pressure. 00:02:11.30\00:02:14.57 Yes, we all do, it's a fact of our lives, 00:02:14.60\00:02:19.56 we must have blood pressure in order to circulate the blood. 00:02:19.57\00:02:23.62 I have asked my colleague Dr. Wynn Horsley to assist me 00:02:23.65\00:02:28.54 in talking with you about this subject. 00:02:28.57\00:02:30.92 I would like to introduce my colleague, 00:02:30.95\00:02:33.25 this is Dr. Wynn Horsley who is a Physiatrist and 00:02:33.28\00:02:36.39 works with us at Uchee Pines. 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.82 Dr. Horsley, maybe you could define 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.63 what high blood pressure is for us. 00:02:42.66\00:02:47.30 Can we start with normal blood pressure? 00:02:47.33\00:02:49.49 Oh yes, let's do! 00:02:49.52\00:02:50.81 As Dr. Agatha already said you have to have blood pressure, 00:02:50.84\00:02:57.21 that's what keeps the blood circulating and the heart then 00:02:57.24\00:03:01.11 is the main organ that gives that thrust to the blood 00:03:01.14\00:03:05.28 and puts pressure into the arteries 00:03:05.31\00:03:07.66 starting with the biggest artery leaving the heart, 00:03:07.69\00:03:09.72 the aorta. 00:03:09.75\00:03:10.93 That pressure is actually varying all the time 00:03:10.96\00:03:15.43 with every heartbeat you get a sudden swing up of the 00:03:15.46\00:03:19.70 blood pressure, and then between the heartbeats 00:03:19.73\00:03:22.60 that pressure is going down as the blood leaves that part 00:03:22.63\00:03:28.68 of the aorta near the heart and goes out to 00:03:28.71\00:03:30.47 more distant arteries. 00:03:30.50\00:03:32.22 What's tradition to be considered normal is figures 00:03:32.25\00:03:37.13 like 120/80, the units perhaps are of interest to some 00:03:37.16\00:03:45.25 of you, those are millimeters of mercury. 00:03:45.28\00:03:48.71 The same that is used to measure air pressure for weather. 00:03:48.74\00:03:54.10 So in the old fashioned, still used blood pressure cuffs 00:03:54.13\00:04:00.50 that are of the highest quality they have a column of mercury 00:04:00.53\00:04:03.16 and it's so many millimeters high when it will stop the blood 00:04:03.19\00:04:08.70 that is coursing through the arteries. 00:04:08.73\00:04:10.04 Now your question was when do we call it abnormally high? 00:04:10.07\00:04:14.00 Yes! That indeed is a good question 00:04:14.03\00:04:17.73 and a difficult one because of that irregularity that you've 00:04:17.76\00:04:20.49 said, it's changed through the years. 00:04:20.52\00:04:22.38 Yes! I've noticed that, it's not the same now that it was 00:04:22.39\00:04:25.68 when I was in medical school 50 years ago. 00:04:25.71\00:04:28.22 Yes, and in fact it has changed during my time too, 00:04:28.25\00:04:30.66 but I believe would it be 30/40 years ago they called the 00:04:30.69\00:04:35.61 upper limit of normal 160/95. Yes! 00:04:35.64\00:04:39.43 Something like that. Yes! 00:04:39.46\00:04:40.96 Then for at least the past 20 years or so it's been 00:04:40.99\00:04:47.41 considered that 140/90 is the dividing line between normal 00:04:47.44\00:04:54.68 and high blood pressure. 00:04:54.71\00:04:56.20 Recent evidence however indicates that people with 00:04:56.23\00:05:03.53 higher blood pressures get an incidence of bad things 00:05:03.56\00:05:06.39 like strokes. 00:05:06.42\00:05:07.66 In fact do better not just at 140/90 but that risk keeps 00:05:07.69\00:05:12.85 going down till you get to a figure like 120/80. 00:05:12.88\00:05:15.94 So instead of being just an average of good blood pressure 00:05:15.97\00:05:19.19 that should be considered an upper limit. 00:05:19.22\00:05:21.06 Yes! Absolutely! I can remember when I was in 00:05:21.07\00:05:24.82 Medical School, we spoke all the time of a person having 00:05:24.85\00:05:29.40 normal blood pressure if the systolic was no more than the 00:05:29.43\00:05:35.96 persons age. 00:05:35.99\00:05:36.96 So if they were 70 years old and their blood pressure was 00:05:36.97\00:05:40.36 170, we said well that is normal he's old and he's supposed to 00:05:40.39\00:05:45.43 have a high blood pressure and to some degree there is some 00:05:45.44\00:05:50.17 truth in that because if the arteries are very hard 00:05:50.20\00:05:54.94 and the kidneys have hard arteries and the 00:05:54.97\00:05:59.04 intestinal tract has hard arteries then of course 00:05:59.07\00:06:01.53 the person does need a little bit of an extra head of pressure 00:06:01.56\00:06:05.19 to get the blood into these various places. 00:06:05.20\00:06:10.12 But whatever the reason for the high blood pressure 00:06:10.15\00:06:15.36 it still is a very difficult situation for the body. 00:06:15.39\00:06:19.48 Well, you know you are pointing out this fact makes one realize 00:06:19.51\00:06:25.65 really this is one of the few diseases where people are 00:06:25.68\00:06:30.70 treating just one sign on physical exam, and as you said 00:06:30.73\00:06:35.69 it's silent, when really what needs to be treated is not 00:06:35.70\00:06:38.47 just the figures of the pressure but the underlying problem 00:06:38.50\00:06:42.71 that is causing that. 00:06:42.74\00:06:43.71 Absolutely! The point that you made about 00:06:43.72\00:06:46.48 someone that may in fact need that kind of pressure... 00:06:46.51\00:06:53.23 I saw that most graphically in my residency. 00:06:53.26\00:06:55.70 There was this old doctor, in fact he was a physician 00:06:55.73\00:07:01.36 who had had a stroke and he was on my unit on the floor 00:07:01.39\00:07:05.91 in the V.A. and his blood pressure was running about 00:07:05.94\00:07:11.46 180/100 and following him, some of the doctors there were 00:07:11.49\00:07:19.73 aiming at getting his blood pressure down to what are 00:07:19.76\00:07:23.02 considered normal figures, down around 140 or less 00:07:23.05\00:07:26.04 over 80. 00:07:26.07\00:07:27.16 One wise old doctor came by and pointed out, 00:07:27.19\00:07:31.04 you know this gentleman, former retired doctor 00:07:31.07\00:07:36.16 in our hands wasn't functioning well mentally 00:07:36.17\00:07:38.90 when you pushed his blood pressure way down 00:07:38.93\00:07:41.10 like this with drugs. 00:07:41.14\00:07:42.23 When you let it come back up to where the kidneys 00:07:42.26\00:07:44.54 were wanting it, in fact he functioned better. 00:07:44.57\00:07:46.90 So it points out we have to get it something very 00:07:46.93\00:07:49.29 fundamental in what's causing high blood pressure. 00:07:49.32\00:07:52.36 Now you mentioned the kidneys. How do the kidneys figure in 00:07:52.39\00:07:56.73 this thing with giving you good function of the brain, 00:07:56.76\00:08:01.07 or good function of the intestinal tract, 00:08:01.08\00:08:02.82 or even good function of the back? 00:08:02.85\00:08:05.03 They are the most central organ for blood pressure. 00:08:05.06\00:08:09.14 The kidneys in doing their work of purifying the blood 00:08:10.17\00:08:14.47 that comes through all the time, they are one could say 00:08:14.50\00:08:19.93 of necessity they need to have a certain pressure head 00:08:19.96\00:08:23.19 to do their job, otherwise they can't filter the blood well. 00:08:23.22\00:08:26.20 So if they are not getting enough, they are going to put 00:08:26.23\00:08:28.90 out substances, rennin, angiotensin, substances 00:08:28.93\00:08:32.19 that will force that blood pressure to be high enough 00:08:32.22\00:08:34.32 for the kidney to do a good job. 00:08:34.35\00:08:36.08 So the kidneys have a central role and to just in a 00:08:36.11\00:08:44.31 willy nilly way, just force the blood pressure down 00:08:44.34\00:08:46.85 without dealing with underlying problems is really 00:08:46.88\00:08:49.26 poor practice. 00:08:49.29\00:08:50.92 Yes, it's very poor practice. 00:08:50.95\00:08:52.54 One thing that we could probably point to as 00:08:52.57\00:08:55.55 a major player in this issue of blood pressure is 00:08:55.58\00:08:59.34 the question of salt intake. 00:08:59.35\00:09:02.82 There could be a long story told about how that 00:09:02.86\00:09:06.26 in the history of medicine came in and doctors gradually came 00:09:06.29\00:09:09.42 to understand it, the kidneys are the main organ handling 00:09:09.45\00:09:14.23 how much water is there in our body, particularly in the blood, 00:09:14.26\00:09:18.62 and how concentrated is that going to be in terms of 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.28 the sodium and chloride, the SALT that is contained 00:09:22.31\00:09:26.44 in that blood, so that all enters the picture. 00:09:26.45\00:09:30.70 The very tiny, tiniest of our arteries are involved in this. 00:09:30.73\00:09:37.56 Do you want to tell us about these little arterioles 00:09:37.59\00:09:41.48 and how they happen to be Key in this thing of the arteries? 00:09:41.51\00:09:46.70 Certainly, we have just been doing this in a class 00:09:46.73\00:09:49.98 We already mentioned the heart which is the big pump which 00:09:50.01\00:09:56.11 raises the pressure, in fact maybe I could show this 00:09:56.14\00:09:59.20 on the board, would that be alright? 00:09:59.23\00:10:00.64 We are going to say along here on this graph... 00:10:05.67\00:10:10.73 We are measuring blood pressure, let's say this is 50 of those 00:10:10.74\00:10:14.41 units of millimeters of mercury, up here is 100, 00:10:14.42\00:10:19.09 and if the individual has figures that are quite high 00:10:22.14\00:10:24.01 we might even get up to 200. 00:10:24.04\00:10:26.03 All the time, this is time going along here, 00:10:28.58\00:10:31.68 the heart is pumping, perhaps once every second 00:10:31.71\00:10:35.26 and with every heart pump from whatever the pressure was 00:10:35.29\00:10:38.27 at, you get a rise it that pressure in the big arteries 00:10:38.30\00:10:41.35 in the body and when that heart has finished it's 00:10:41.38\00:10:45.46 contraction of that left ventricle, then the valve 00:10:45.49\00:10:51.74 that it pumped the blood through snaps shut 00:10:51.75\00:10:55.07 and now that blood is in the aorta under pressure. 00:10:55.10\00:10:59.78 That pressure actually helps along with earlier during 00:10:59.81\00:11:06.02 the heart beat, now just the aorta which has been expanded 00:11:06.05\00:11:09.50 and has the blood under that elastic tension of the 00:11:09.53\00:11:12.79 artery wall, it is pushing that blood further along. 00:11:12.82\00:11:16.76 So the pressure during this time when the hear is resting 00:11:16.79\00:11:20.14 is gradually falling until we get another heart beat, 00:11:20.18\00:11:24.59 and then it suddenly rises and then it gradually falls 00:11:24.62\00:11:28.67 when it is relaxing again. 00:11:28.70\00:11:30.15 The pressure that the heart places in the blood 00:11:30.18\00:11:36.61 with each heartbeat into the aorta, this pressure is called 00:11:36.64\00:11:41.08 the systolic pressure, systole is the fancy word 00:11:41.11\00:11:46.42 the technical term for contraction of the heart. 00:11:46.45\00:11:51.08 During this period when the heart is no longer pumping 00:11:51.11\00:11:59.48 for nearly a second, this whole time it is just the 00:11:59.51\00:12:04.86 pressure that the arterial system gives, 00:12:04.89\00:12:08.56 or the resistance that the arteries give and it is 00:12:08.59\00:12:11.70 most specifically those tiny arteries that you mentioned 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.29 the arterioles that are barely visible to the eye. 00:12:15.32\00:12:18.43 Tiny little blood vessels that have plenty of circular 00:12:18.46\00:12:21.89 muscle fibers around them that can tighten or relax 00:12:21.92\00:12:26.16 and let the blood flow more easily. 00:12:26.19\00:12:27.96 That is what gives the rate at which this pressure 00:12:28.00\00:12:31.73 declines to the lowest point just before the next contraction 00:12:31.76\00:12:35.35 which is the diastolic pressure, and I think we are all 00:12:35.38\00:12:45.41 acquainted with how these two are combined when they give 00:12:45.42\00:12:48.81 blood pressure, they give one figure over another figure 00:12:48.84\00:12:52.45 so 120/80 would mean that we have a pressure of 120 00:12:52.48\00:12:59.86 which represents the hard work that the heart has to do with 00:12:59.89\00:13:03.32 every beat, and we have a pressure of 80 which represents 00:13:03.33\00:13:07.68 that lowest resting pressure and how much pressure is the 00:13:07.72\00:13:13.66 least that those arterioles and arteries for that matter 00:13:13.69\00:13:17.10 have to face all the time. 00:13:17.13\00:13:18.67 The fact that the Lord equipped us with arterioles that have 00:13:18.70\00:13:25.35 all that muscle in the wall, in fact the thickness of the 00:13:25.38\00:13:30.65 muscle wall is greater than the diameter of the lumen 00:13:30.68\00:13:35.45 of that little arteriole to be able to hold that pressure 00:13:35.48\00:13:42.43 on the blood as it circulates. 00:13:42.47\00:13:46.26 Now I have observed, and everybody has who practices 00:13:46.29\00:13:50.27 medicine that high blood pressure tends to 00:13:50.30\00:13:53.60 run in families. 00:13:53.63\00:13:55.38 Is there something about certain family genetics... 00:13:55.41\00:13:59.09 and are other diseases associated with this as well? 00:13:59.12\00:14:03.12 I am sure there is some but in medical circles 00:14:03.15\00:14:07.18 we often talk about this nature verses nurture. 00:14:07.21\00:14:12.12 It is really a very hard thing to separate out because 00:14:12.15\00:14:16.51 children that grow up with their parents don't only 00:14:16.52\00:14:21.57 inherit genes, they inherit eating patterns. 00:14:21.60\00:14:24.28 They inherit all kinds of habit patterns, 00:14:24.31\00:14:26.56 in fact even the things that make them angry 00:14:26.59\00:14:29.07 might be quite similar. 00:14:29.10\00:14:30.38 Yes! So you have an entanglement 00:14:30.39\00:14:34.02 of factors and since we can't change our genes 00:14:34.05\00:14:37.25 it behooves us to look closely at those other things that we've 00:14:37.28\00:14:39.90 been nurtured into doing. 00:14:39.91\00:14:41.28 Lifestyle is certainly vey important in that. 00:14:41.31\00:14:43.54 Well thank you very much and I'm just really happy 00:14:43.57\00:14:46.97 that Dr. Horsley could explain those things and has 00:14:47.00\00:14:51.77 a very nice way of talking about Anatomy and Physiology 00:14:51.80\00:14:55.47 which most people feel is these are some very 00:14:55.50\00:14:59.13 foreign Latin terms that I am not expected to understand 00:14:59.16\00:15:02.99 as just an ordinary human being. 00:15:03.02\00:15:05.13 Now I have asked also Don Miller who is one of my colleagues 00:15:05.16\00:15:11.05 at Uchee Pines who is a lifestyle counselor 00:15:11.08\00:15:14.83 to talk with you some things about the issues involved 00:15:14.86\00:15:18.77 in the high blood pressure. 00:15:18.80\00:15:20.11 What do you have for us Brother Don? 00:15:20.14\00:15:22.18 I think one of the most important things is 00:15:22.21\00:15:24.08 not so much to say you might have it is, 00:15:24.11\00:15:25.78 how can you get rid of high blood pressure or 00:15:25.81\00:15:27.83 how can you keep from making that appointment. 00:15:27.86\00:15:29.86 One of the main things that I can mention about how we can 00:15:29.89\00:15:34.24 lower our blood pressure because we got this heart 00:15:34.25\00:15:38.53 trying to pump it through our system and it makes the pressure 00:15:38.56\00:15:41.28 rise when we have some type of occlusion, 00:15:41.31\00:15:43.67 we've got some coronary plaques, 00:15:43.68\00:15:45.24 or whatever it might be. 00:15:45.27\00:15:46.24 There are some very nice things that we can do, 00:15:46.25\00:15:48.39 and there is a nice piece of equipment that we can use 00:15:48.42\00:15:51.94 to help us to lower that blood pressure. 00:15:51.97\00:15:55.25 Now it is an extremely expensive piece of equipment but 00:15:55.28\00:15:58.20 all of you have one in your home so I have called 00:15:58.23\00:16:01.92 for a demonstration for this piece of equipment, 00:16:01.95\00:16:03.94 so I am going to have this piece of equipment come out here 00:16:03.97\00:16:06.37 right now and show it. 00:16:06.38\00:16:07.88 This is the piece of equipment, this is my dear friend 00:16:07.91\00:16:10.70 Shannon Jenkins from Uchee Pines, one our Lifestyle 00:16:10.73\00:16:13.41 Educators students and a long time staff members child. 00:16:13.44\00:16:17.67 This, you might not know it but this is a piece of equipment 00:16:17.70\00:16:22.00 and I am so thankful that God has given us these 00:16:22.03\00:16:24.66 pieces of equipment. 00:16:24.69\00:16:25.66 You've got one right there sitting in your chair 00:16:25.67\00:16:27.32 inside your shoes, and this is one right here, 00:16:27.36\00:16:29.95 and the way we lower the blood pressure is by getting into 00:16:29.98\00:16:33.25 an exercise program. 00:16:33.28\00:16:34.63 Now I am going to show you that this particular piece of 00:16:34.66\00:16:37.99 equipment certain speeds, so the first speed that I want this 00:16:38.02\00:16:41.62 piece of equipment to work at is at a 62 year old woman 00:16:41.65\00:16:46.31 who doesn't get much exercise. 00:16:46.34\00:16:47.66 So now you are a 62 year old woman, 00:16:47.69\00:16:49.24 how fast would you turn on your speed for the exercise 00:16:49.27\00:16:52.69 that we are going to do? 00:16:52.72\00:16:53.69 Let's see you do the exercise speed for a 62 year old woman. 00:16:53.70\00:16:56.94 OK! Not to quick is it? 00:16:56.97\00:17:00.32 This is called running in place, now does that cost money? 00:17:00.35\00:17:03.99 Not much money, but this is a very important piece of 00:17:04.02\00:17:06.75 equipment and so are you, and so we want you to do these 00:17:06.78\00:17:09.41 nice simple things that you can do in your home. 00:17:09.44\00:17:12.45 So this is nice and slow, and I want to stress the fact that 00:17:12.48\00:17:15.79 if you are out of shape, you have been a couch potato 00:17:15.82\00:17:18.96 or whatever your problem might be, we want you to slow down 00:17:18.99\00:17:22.51 and start your exercise program slowly. 00:17:22.54\00:17:25.20 Now we are going to turn back the years on Shannon, 00:17:25.23\00:17:28.09 and take her back to what she really is, 00:17:28.12\00:17:30.50 so right now Shannon let's go back to sweet 16. 00:17:30.53\00:17:33.68 Let's see what type of exercise... Come on! 00:17:33.71\00:17:36.11 Turn it on now, we really got to hump it, we got to pump it, 00:17:36.14\00:17:39.49 we really have to get in there, you can see as she is getting 00:17:39.52\00:17:42.09 in there, her arms are rising, very high as a matter of fact, 00:17:42.12\00:17:44.96 If she was at home doing this she could raise her knees up 00:17:44.99\00:17:48.82 and touch her elbows to her knees, I won't make her do this 00:17:48.85\00:17:50.88 on 3ABN but we are going to have her do this for awhile 00:17:50.91\00:17:55.05 and now there are some benefits going on in this child's body 00:17:55.08\00:17:58.23 while she is doing this particular exercise. 00:17:58.26\00:17:59.90 One, she is getting exercise which is making her heart beat 00:17:59.93\00:18:03.36 more deeply and more rapidly which is going to make it stroke 00:18:03.39\00:18:08.20 a little bit deeper and slowly but surely that muscle 00:18:08.23\00:18:12.42 that never rests is going to get stronger, 00:18:12.45\00:18:14.93 so by running her heart muscle is getting stronger. 00:18:14.96\00:18:18.92 That in itself will make her blood pressure go down 00:18:18.95\00:18:22.29 over a period of time. 00:18:22.32\00:18:23.39 Second thing, exercise has been shown to lower blood sugar. 00:18:23.42\00:18:27.91 Blood sugar as it rises will make your blood pressure rise. 00:18:27.92\00:18:31.76 By exercising it makes your body utilize your blood sugars 00:18:31.79\00:18:36.51 much more effectively, so right now her blood sugars are 00:18:36.52\00:18:39.23 going down, so that is a good thing. 00:18:39.26\00:18:41.38 Another thing that is going down, 00:18:41.41\00:18:43.06 of course she doesn't need to go down to far, 00:18:43.09\00:18:44.82 is her weight, as she does this exercise her weight will fall. 00:18:44.85\00:18:49.50 We find that people who are overweight seem to have 00:18:49.51\00:18:52.41 more high blood pressure. 00:18:52.44\00:18:54.13 So if you have a weight problem do exercise, 00:18:54.16\00:18:57.20 and I am recommending this one it is not to clement. 00:18:57.23\00:19:00.68 Now if it is raining or snowing if it's icy, if it's cold, 00:19:00.71\00:19:03.48 if it's night time, whatever your problem is, 00:19:03.51\00:19:05.30 you can do this right there in your home, 00:19:05.33\00:19:07.44 so she is going to be loosing weight, another thing she's 00:19:07.47\00:19:10.49 going to be loosing here quite soon is going to be some 00:19:10.52\00:19:13.19 perspiration and some water. 00:19:13.22\00:19:14.55 After she gets done she is going to go over there and 00:19:14.58\00:19:17.14 drink a lot of water, and the more water we drink we will 00:19:17.17\00:19:21.29 eliminate that water, and every time you eliminate water 00:19:21.32\00:19:24.07 your body adds sodium to the water, so we void out the water 00:19:24.10\00:19:28.37 with some sodium, and we realize people who have 00:19:28.40\00:19:31.49 high blood pressure should be on a low salt diet. 00:19:31.52\00:19:34.18 So she will now be eliminating some salt from her diet, 00:19:34.19\00:19:37.44 right now she is loosing some weight, she probably doesn't 00:19:37.47\00:19:40.74 Very Valuable machines! 00:22:19.49\00:22:20.62 Very valuable machinery! 00:22:20.66\00:22:21.84 I am very thankful that you presented this on exercise, 00:22:21.87\00:22:25.79 because exercise will do marvels where many other types 00:22:25.82\00:22:31.09 of remedies will not be effective. 00:22:31.12\00:22:33.69 But Dr. Horsley and I would like to present some more things 00:22:33.72\00:22:38.32 with having to do with how to treat blood pressure. 00:22:38.35\00:22:41.88 When the blood pressure is high how we can make it to come down, 00:22:41.91\00:22:46.58 so Dr. Horsley do you have some things to say about that 00:22:46.61\00:22:49.47 and maybe some patients that you have had and 00:22:49.50\00:22:52.57 what you have done for them. 00:22:52.58\00:22:53.85 I do, I was just so interested a few years back when I read 00:22:53.88\00:22:58.50 about a doctor's experience with sun light. 00:22:58.51\00:23:01.55 That he would have patients go out and exercise 00:23:01.58\00:23:06.31 but he would have them expose a fair bit of their skin 00:23:06.34\00:23:10.07 to sun light, and he said that that had a definite effect 00:23:10.10\00:23:13.77 on lowering the blood pressure. 00:23:13.80\00:23:15.02 It was not just an immediate effect that lasts for a few 00:23:15.05\00:23:19.40 minutes, that one could understand that the heat 00:23:19.43\00:23:22.21 would bring a lowering of blood pressure by opening up 00:23:22.24\00:23:25.60 the arterioles, but he said it would last for up to 24 hours. 00:23:25.63\00:23:29.85 I started trying it. 00:23:29.88\00:23:32.25 One of the first patients that I tried it on 00:23:32.28\00:23:36.75 was this gentleman, a 60 year old black man, 00:23:36.78\00:23:42.71 who had pressures that were running about 180/100. 00:23:42.74\00:23:48.58 We had checked him in the room, and that is about 00:23:48.59\00:23:54.41 what it was running. 00:23:54.44\00:23:55.41 So I said let's go outside here onto the porch of the 00:23:55.42\00:24:00.18 building that we use and roll up the sleeves, 00:24:00.21\00:24:03.74 even pull up the pant legs some, so we did that 00:24:03.77\00:24:08.50 and I checked it, I checked it within about 2- 3 minutes. 00:24:08.53\00:24:12.72 I was probably a little premature I was just anxious 00:24:12.75\00:24:15.20 to see what was happening. 00:24:15.23\00:24:16.27 I was astounded, it went down to about 150/90. 00:24:16.30\00:24:20.81 Now that is a pretty big level for a drug that would be 00:24:20.84\00:24:26.36 very powerful, but there the sun was doing it. 00:24:26.39\00:24:28.95 It is amazing that with the simplest of things, 00:24:28.99\00:24:32.51 like just sunlight. 00:24:32.54\00:24:34.10 Can you get the same kind of thing with a person just 00:24:34.13\00:24:37.79 sitting in a tub of warm water? 00:24:37.82\00:24:41.28 You know warm water, even just lukewarm water 00:24:41.31\00:24:45.28 often will bring blood pressure down, and we use that 00:24:45.31\00:24:48.92 routinely at Uchee Pines when other things have been giving 00:24:48.95\00:24:53.28 some effect or little effect, not enough that we are 00:24:53.31\00:24:57.12 satisfied, a lukewarm bath will often help. 00:24:57.15\00:25:00.37 The bath works on a totally different principle from the sun 00:25:00.40\00:25:05.19 I believe. 00:25:05.22\00:25:06.19 I think that the bath with it's warming sends impulses up 00:25:06.20\00:25:12.02 to the brain that come from thousands of little nerves 00:25:12.05\00:25:16.80 that touch the water, so the actual touching of the water 00:25:16.83\00:25:20.13 I think is helpful and its temperature is good. 00:25:20.16\00:25:23.28 Then the sunlight, it has instantly more than just 00:25:23.31\00:25:28.61 warming, it does all those things with the Pro-vitamin D, 00:25:28.64\00:25:33.47 and Bilirubin and all those things that happen just 00:25:33.50\00:25:37.78 on instantaneous basis when a person walks into the sun. 00:25:37.81\00:25:41.31 I was quite surprised, and then to think that this lasts 00:25:41.34\00:25:44.47 for hours after, not just when the person is in the sun. 00:25:44.50\00:25:47.41 Now what else do you have? 00:25:47.44\00:25:49.05 Ok! More recently I saw a little add that one of our staff 00:25:49.08\00:25:56.63 members had there of a piece of equipment that was 00:25:56.66\00:26:00.97 just basically just checking on a person's breathing. 00:26:01.00\00:26:03.25 It was a little girdle that some company was selling 00:26:03.28\00:26:07.62 because they had a medical study that had shown 00:26:07.65\00:26:10.68 when people breathe more slowly the blood pressure goes down. 00:26:10.71\00:26:15.42 So they had enough facts there they said that the 00:26:15.45\00:26:21.75 average person was breathing about 20 times a minute, 00:26:21.78\00:26:25.01 and what they wanted a person to come down to was 00:26:25.02\00:26:28.55 10 times a minute. 00:26:28.58\00:26:29.63 Well, one of our folks at Uchee Pines has gotten into 00:26:29.66\00:26:35.05 a program where they do trials of breathing three times 00:26:35.08\00:26:37.89 a minute, 10 times a minute is not hard at all to do. 00:26:37.90\00:26:40.43 We had this Oriental woman recently that came 00:26:40.46\00:26:49.06 with rather high and variable blood pressure, 00:26:49.09\00:26:51.67 what they call Labile hypertension. 00:26:51.70\00:26:53.87 She had blood pressure, I believe the figure that 00:26:53.90\00:27:01.19 right at the time when I checked this was 185/95. 00:27:01.22\00:27:07.35 So she was I think breathing rather rapidly, she tended to be 00:27:07.38\00:27:13.28 a fairly tense person and so with her, 00:27:13.31\00:27:18.41 I would count with her, breathe in, hold it, 00:27:18.44\00:27:23.37 breathe out, and we have so many seconds in each phase 00:27:23.40\00:27:26.53 and when we re-checked it after two minutes of doing that 00:27:26.56\00:27:32.08 her blood pressure was 145/85. 00:27:32.11\00:27:36.38 Amazing! Well that certainly is very 00:27:36.41\00:27:39.89 amazing that such simple things such as the rate 00:27:39.92\00:27:44.31 at which you breathe and how much sunlight you get 00:27:44.34\00:27:47.89 on your skin, and all of these things are free to us 00:27:47.92\00:27:51.53 just for the asking from our Heavenly Father. 00:27:51.56\00:27:54.32
