Hello, I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.70 from Uchee Pines Institute in Alabama. 00:00:03.73\00:00:07.04 I wonder if you've ever noticed that women 00:00:07.05\00:00:10.44 seem to be sicker more... 00:00:10.47\00:00:12.07 but you'll notice that men seem to die younger than women. 00:00:12.10\00:00:16.70 Well there's a reason for that and we're going to be 00:00:16.71\00:00:19.62 talking about women's diseases and why they're sicker. 00:00:19.65\00:00:22.62 So, you join us during the next half an hour and we'll discuss 00:00:22.65\00:00:26.02 a number of these things. 00:00:26.06\00:00:28.38 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:47.98\00:00:50.54 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:50.57\00:00:53.99 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash 00:00:54.02\00:01:00.09 Yes, it is true that women are sicker more... 00:01:00.12\00:01:03.80 They have more pain. 00:01:03.83\00:01:04.99 They seem to have more disability than men do. 00:01:05.02\00:01:09.51 And, you would expect me probably to say that the Lord 00:01:09.54\00:01:13.14 has endowed us with more sophisticated equipment 00:01:13.17\00:01:16.27 than men have and, therefore, that's why we are sick more, 00:01:16.30\00:01:20.00 and that is also true. 00:01:20.03\00:01:22.35 We do have some very sophisticated equipment 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.95 And of course, that equipment is likely to be breaking down some 00:01:24.98\00:01:29.83 because it is very much more complicated. 00:01:29.86\00:01:33.98 Take for instance the anatomy of the female pelvic organs 00:01:34.01\00:01:40.33 These organs have some extremely sophisticated 00:01:40.36\00:01:44.21 interconnections and they're so arranged that, at times, 00:01:44.24\00:01:49.68 the way the hormones influence the cervix and the 00:01:49.71\00:01:55.38 muscle of the uterus. 00:01:55.42\00:01:58.02 Because of these things, a woman does have a lot 00:01:58.05\00:02:01.06 of pain... we call it "dysmenorrhea," or painful 00:02:01.09\00:02:04.20 menstruation. 00:02:04.21\00:02:05.60 And so every woman needs to learn how to deal with 00:02:05.63\00:02:09.59 this kind of problem. 00:02:09.62\00:02:11.31 And so, I have with me today, Shannon Jenkins. 00:02:11.34\00:02:14.89 Shannon is one of the Lifestyle Educator students 00:02:14.92\00:02:18.40 at our school, at Uchee Pines... 00:02:18.43\00:02:20.31 And with her is my granddaughter Melissa. 00:02:20.34\00:02:23.08 Melissa is also a student in the Lifestyle Educator 00:02:23.11\00:02:27.16 Program there. 00:02:27.19\00:02:28.45 And Shannon, if Melissa had painful menstruation, 00:02:28.48\00:02:32.86 what would you do for her to help her to relieve her pain. 00:02:32.89\00:02:37.76 There's a very simple back massage that we can give her 00:02:37.79\00:02:41.06 It only takes 5 minutes. 00:02:41.09\00:02:44.01 Ohhh... that sounds very good. 00:02:44.04\00:02:48.11 I'm sorry I'm not the subject. 00:02:48.14\00:02:53.48 Right here is her spine... 00:02:53.51\00:02:55.08 and right to the right side of her spine, 00:02:55.11\00:02:57.87 place the heel of your hand, and with as much pressure 00:02:57.90\00:03:01.99 as she can tolerate, press down and slowly inch your way 00:03:02.02\00:03:07.60 down the spine. 00:03:07.63\00:03:10.79 Go all the way down to the end of the spine 00:03:10.82\00:03:13.55 and then come back up and inch your way back up. 00:03:13.58\00:03:17.44 She will tell you if there is too much pressure. 00:03:17.47\00:03:21.10 And that is very simple. 00:03:21.13\00:03:23.26 Five minutes and it's all over. 00:03:23.27\00:03:26.23 Yes... and I have seen a lot of young women with 00:03:26.26\00:03:29.45 this very simple thing... to get an enormous amount of relief 00:03:29.48\00:03:34.61 Now, you can also apply heat and in the classes 00:03:34.64\00:03:38.95 that you are taking there at Uchee Pines, you have 00:03:38.98\00:03:42.01 some heat demonstrations... Could you show those to us? 00:03:42.04\00:03:48.98 You can use a hot water bottle... 00:03:49.01\00:03:51.19 Just take it and fill it with water, very hot and even boiling 00:03:51.22\00:03:55.95 You can buy one of these at a department store 00:03:55.98\00:03:58.72 or a drug store. 00:03:58.75\00:04:01.06 Just fill it with water, and then press and expel the air 00:04:01.07\00:04:06.61 because air bubbles do not produce heat very well. 00:04:06.64\00:04:10.29 Screw the cap on and cover it with a towel. 00:04:10.32\00:04:14.26 Cover it with a towel so that if it's too hot, 00:04:14.29\00:04:17.99 it won't burn her... That's right. 00:04:18.02\00:04:19.37 And place it on the lower back and you can leave it there 00:04:19.40\00:04:25.24 for an hour. 00:04:25.27\00:04:26.49 And, if it gets too hot, you can use a thicker towel. 00:04:26.52\00:04:32.24 What if you don't have a hot water bottle? 00:04:32.25\00:04:35.54 And a lot of homes aren't equipped with 00:04:35.57\00:04:37.48 hot water bottles anymore. 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.04 Well, you can just use a plastic bottle. 00:04:39.07\00:04:41.88 You can just use a laundry detergent bottle. 00:04:41.91\00:04:44.78 ...Or any plastic bottle for that matter. 00:04:44.81\00:04:47.10 Just fill it with hot water and wrap it in a towel. 00:04:47.13\00:04:50.68 That also includes doing a little bit of work and 00:04:50.71\00:04:54.04 a lot of people nowadays don't want to do so much work. 00:04:54.07\00:04:57.11 Well that's very simple, all we need to do is purchase a 00:04:57.14\00:05:01.32 heating pad from a department store, and place it 00:05:01.35\00:05:05.89 on the back and leave it there for an hour. 00:05:05.92\00:05:08.48 Yes... that delivers heat to the back and now since the pain 00:05:08.51\00:05:14.89 is in the front... 00:05:14.92\00:05:16.15 Why do you put it here on the back... do you have any idea? 00:05:16.19\00:05:19.58 This is the place for reflex organs. 00:05:19.62\00:05:21.07 This helps the uterus and the cervix. 00:05:21.11\00:05:23.53 Um hm... now that's very good. 00:05:23.56\00:05:26.58 The outflow tracts to all the pelvic organs are in the back 00:05:26.61\00:05:31.88 in the lower part and that's why... and mainly on the right. 00:05:31.91\00:05:35.49 And that's why the massage is mainly on the right of the body 00:05:35.52\00:05:40.34 It's very interesting about these things and I always 00:05:40.37\00:05:43.66 enjoy hearing about them and seeing our young 00:05:43.69\00:05:46.53 students learn about them. 00:05:46.56\00:05:47.81 Now painful menstruation is not the only problem 00:05:47.84\00:05:52.13 that young women have. 00:05:52.16\00:05:54.25 We have A LOT of other things that women have... 00:05:54.28\00:05:56.67 And, in addition to the things that have specifically to do 00:05:56.70\00:06:03.52 with the pelvic organs, 00:06:03.55\00:06:04.84 we also have a number of disorders and diseases 00:06:04.87\00:06:07.99 that, although they are not unique to women, 00:06:08.00\00:06:11.70 they tend to be more common in women. 00:06:11.73\00:06:13.99 One of those is thyroid problems. 00:06:14.02\00:06:16.43 You will see that women often have an enlarged thyroid. 00:06:16.44\00:06:21.09 The thyroid of many women is of such a nature that 00:06:21.12\00:06:27.12 they get what we call a "goiter" 00:06:27.15\00:06:29.12 It is so large... that it's disfiguring. 00:06:29.13\00:06:33.01 We may need to cut it out in that case. 00:06:33.04\00:06:36.80 Or, we may be able to treat it with some very simple things 00:06:36.83\00:06:40.42 And... a number of years ago, my husband and I 00:06:40.45\00:06:43.16 put together some things that women could do 00:06:43.19\00:06:46.93 to help themselves with an underactive thyroid... 00:06:46.96\00:06:51.38 which would then grow a goiter 00:06:51.41\00:06:54.18 And there are a number of things that can be done 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.40 in the way of herbs such as... 00:06:56.43\00:06:58.88 Motherwort... that's a very good one for the thyroid 00:06:58.91\00:07:02.24 Echinacea is also a very good herb for the thyroid 00:07:02.27\00:07:06.81 These are not specific for the hormone... 00:07:06.84\00:07:10.70 They do not replace the hormone. 00:07:10.73\00:07:13.64 But they tend to stimulate or to heal the thyroid 00:07:13.67\00:07:17.13 and enable the thyroid to produce more in the way 00:07:17.16\00:07:20.34 of the hormone that IS specific for the thyroid. 00:07:20.37\00:07:24.61 Bugleweed is another one that one can use. 00:07:24.64\00:07:28.56 Quercetin, a substance that comes from onions... 00:07:28.59\00:07:31.74 this also has a very beneficial effect on the thyroid. 00:07:31.77\00:07:35.48 The very common rolled oats, another very good herb 00:07:35.49\00:07:43.68 that we can use, or supplement that we can use 00:07:43.71\00:07:47.24 for people who have a thyroid problem. 00:07:47.27\00:07:50.07 Then, if there is a problem with an overactive thyroid, 00:07:50.10\00:07:54.07 such things as catnip, and hops and other things that 00:07:54.10\00:07:57.73 have a sedative influence on the body... 00:07:57.76\00:08:00.46 that can be very helpful. 00:08:00.49\00:08:02.97 Now we have a lot of hydrotherapy that can be done 00:08:03.00\00:08:06.12 for an underactive thyroid, or an overactive thyroid. 00:08:06.15\00:08:09.61 Heat treatments to the thyroid can be 00:08:09.64\00:08:12.51 extremely beneficial. 00:08:12.54\00:08:14.22 Various types of foods can help the thyroid 00:08:14.25\00:08:18.07 and, interestingly, some of the same things that help 00:08:18.10\00:08:20.67 women with their pelvic organ diseases can also 00:08:20.70\00:08:25.37 help the thyroid. 00:08:25.40\00:08:26.72 And so I have with me, Lidia Seda today, 00:08:26.75\00:08:29.80 who is going to show us something that looks very nice! 00:08:29.83\00:08:33.59 In fact, it looks like a breakfast meal... 00:08:33.62\00:08:36.53 Is it a breakfast meal? 00:08:36.56\00:08:37.76 Well actually, this can be a breakfast meal, 00:08:37.79\00:08:40.18 but it's more a SUPPER meal. 00:08:40.21\00:08:41.90 It's light... it doesn't help to promote obesity. 00:08:41.91\00:08:47.75 And obesity is a BIG problem, especially for young women. 00:08:47.78\00:08:52.51 They are finding that young girls are entering puberty 00:08:52.54\00:08:56.54 at a much younger age... even at 9 years old 00:08:56.57\00:08:59.73 because of being obese, or even mildly overweight. 00:08:59.76\00:09:04.49 What they have found now is that there is a certain hormone 00:09:04.52\00:09:08.05 called "leptin"... which is produced by fat cells. 00:09:08.08\00:09:12.38 And so, because the young woman is a bit overweight, 00:09:12.39\00:09:15.93 she's producing more of this hormone... 00:09:15.96\00:09:18.75 and this hormone is causing her to develop at an earlier age 00:09:18.78\00:09:22.35 Can you imagine the problems that she might have? 00:09:22.38\00:09:24.87 In school... that her body is ready to deal with certain 00:09:24.90\00:09:29.17 situations... more mature but her mind is NOT 00:09:29.20\00:09:33.15 Well, this is one meal that can help to eliminate 00:09:33.18\00:09:36.15 the problem of obesity. 00:09:36.18\00:09:37.76 And I'd like to share with you how I made it 00:09:37.79\00:09:40.19 and what it contains. 00:09:40.22\00:09:42.02 Well, first of all, what you would need are: 00:09:42.05\00:09:43.88 And you would cut the apples, cut the bananas. 00:10:00.16\00:10:04.02 Place all your ingredients into a pot... 00:10:04.05\00:10:06.65 the juice, and also the cornstarch and make sure 00:10:06.68\00:10:10.21 you don't put your cornstarch in when it's hot. 00:10:10.24\00:10:14.05 Put it in when it's cold. 00:10:14.06\00:10:15.11 This way, it won't get clumpy. 00:10:15.14\00:10:17.27 And stir it until it comes to a gentle boil 00:10:17.30\00:10:20.49 ...And it's ready and it's a light meal. 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.65 And you can have it with crackers as we have here. 00:10:22.68\00:10:25.65 The interesting thing about some of the products we have 00:10:25.68\00:10:29.17 in the fruit soup... is that grapes and apples 00:10:29.20\00:10:33.42 have some very protective properties. 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.86 For example, grapes have a trace mineral called selenium. 00:10:35.89\00:10:41.32 And selenium can help guard against cancer. 00:10:41.35\00:10:44.09 And apples and grapes have flavonoids. 00:10:44.12\00:10:46.91 And they have found that flavonoids can help 00:10:46.94\00:10:49.21 guard against the oxidation of LDL. 00:10:49.24\00:10:51.75 It also is a much more potent antioxidant 00:10:51.76\00:10:55.63 than vitamin E which can protect against cancer. 00:10:55.66\00:10:59.00 AND this also prevents heart disease because it 00:10:59.03\00:11:03.91 helps against clumping of blood or blood aggregation. 00:11:03.94\00:11:08.15 So, Dr. Agatha, these are some of the wonderful benefits 00:11:08.18\00:11:11.06 we can get by just having fruit soup! 00:11:11.09\00:11:14.84 I'm impressed and that it's a very nice substitute for dinner. 00:11:14.87\00:11:20.05 It's a supper and supper, ideally, should be something 00:11:20.09\00:11:24.68 that supped from a cup and not something 00:11:24.71\00:11:27.23 that is eaten with a fork from a dinner plate... Exactly. 00:11:27.27\00:11:30.08 Yes, a very light meal, or no meal at all. 00:11:30.11\00:11:32.93 Or no meal at all... and that's what I did. 00:11:32.96\00:11:36.11 Many years ago when I visited Uchee Pines, 00:11:36.14\00:11:38.31 I weighed about 200 pounds and I decided to go on a 00:11:38.34\00:11:43.05 no-third-meal plan. 00:11:43.08\00:11:45.19 Uh huh... And that helped me and then eventually I went 00:11:45.22\00:11:48.00 on a LIGHT meal in the evenings. 00:11:48.03\00:11:50.79 Like a fruit soup, or maybe a little tomato soup with a 00:11:50.82\00:11:54.88 few crackers... Something very light... 00:11:54.91\00:11:56.58 Or maybe just an apple, or a banana and a slice of bread. 00:11:56.62\00:11:59.30 But that helped me to maintain my weight... 00:11:59.33\00:12:01.83 and to reduce many risks in the future that I may face. 00:12:01.86\00:12:06.12 Yes... it is a fact that women who are overweight do have 00:12:06.13\00:12:09.82 quite a big problem with various diseases. 00:12:09.85\00:12:14.20 And so, this is a very good demonstration of something 00:12:14.23\00:12:17.91 that can be done to make it so that a woman can reduce 00:12:17.92\00:12:22.11 her risks of getting a variety of diseases. 00:12:22.14\00:12:25.57 Now another type of disease that is not unique to women 00:12:25.60\00:12:29.79 but it is more common in women is that of 00:12:29.82\00:12:32.73 disease of the veins. 00:12:32.76\00:12:35.44 Now, everybody is endowed with veins and men, as well as 00:12:35.45\00:12:38.72 women can have a problem with varicose veins 00:12:38.75\00:12:42.86 but by far, in a way greater number of people who 00:12:42.89\00:12:46.15 have varicosities are among the feminine set. 00:12:46.18\00:12:50.28 And I have my colleague, Dr. Winn Horsley, with me today 00:12:50.31\00:12:54.40 And Dr. Horsley is a staff physician at Uchee Pines, 00:12:54.43\00:12:57.99 a physiatrist, and is quite well able to talk with us about veins 00:12:58.02\00:13:03.18 So, tell us what you have about varicose veins, Dr. Horsley. 00:13:03.21\00:13:07.50 Good... I'd be happy to Dr. Agatha. 00:13:07.53\00:13:11.49 Varicose veins... we should probably understand first of all 00:13:11.52\00:13:15.64 what is the underlying issue... the underlying cause. 00:13:15.67\00:13:20.55 It doesn't have to do with being a man or a woman 00:13:20.58\00:13:23.86 It's a very simple principle... 00:13:23.89\00:13:26.47 and it's that if you have a container with a tube 00:13:26.50\00:13:30.59 coming off the container, that has either liquid 00:13:30.62\00:13:33.21 or a gas, or air in it, 00:13:33.24\00:13:35.57 that pressure is going to be communicated down that tube. 00:13:35.60\00:13:38.96 If we put that container under pressure, 00:13:39.79\00:13:42.92 the same pressure is going to go down that tube. 00:13:42.95\00:13:45.99 Now that's exactly what happens anytime a person 00:13:46.02\00:13:49.64 strains or bears down... as we say... 00:13:49.67\00:13:52.65 ...with pressure in their trunk, in their chest and abdomen. 00:13:52.68\00:13:58.05 This, with respect to what tubes go out of the chest.. 00:13:58.08\00:14:05.16 the trunk, we're talking about blood vessels as the main tubes. 00:14:05.19\00:14:10.48 Now, the arteries don't get affected this way because 00:14:10.51\00:14:14.10 they're already under pressure. 00:14:14.13\00:14:16.38 But veins, by contrast, are very low pressure. 00:14:16.41\00:14:21.51 When we say someone has a certain blood pressure, 00:14:21.54\00:14:23.32 we're talking only about arteries. 00:14:23.35\00:14:24.84 Veins are basically zero pressure UNLESS 00:14:24.85\00:14:28.47 a person does this heavy bearing down. 00:14:28.50\00:14:31.12 Now who does this? 00:14:31.13\00:14:32.12 Well, I could start with men. 00:14:32.15\00:14:34.97 Weight lifters do! 00:14:35.00\00:14:36.29 And weight lifters will tend to develop 00:14:36.32\00:14:38.50 problems in the veins. 00:14:38.53\00:14:39.63 Perhaps I could take a moment first to show 00:14:39.66\00:14:44.52 the way the veins are equipped... 00:14:44.55\00:14:45.87 ...the way the Lord created veins so that they do 00:14:45.90\00:14:48.48 handle blood flow even without pressure. 00:14:48.51\00:14:51.63 I'm going to show a leg 00:14:51.67\00:14:54.57 and then a vein in the leg... 00:14:54.60\00:15:00.54 Foot here and here is the leg. 00:15:00.58\00:15:05.48 We'll say the knee is out in front here. 00:15:05.52\00:15:07.90 Maybe I could use this green to show us a vein... 00:15:07.94\00:15:16.94 This is clearly more symbolic than real in size... 00:15:16.97\00:15:20.44 But I want to show you what is in a vein. 00:15:20.47\00:15:23.77 If a vein were just the way I've drawn it, 00:15:23.78\00:15:25.55 you couldn't get blood at zero pressure from the foot 00:15:25.58\00:15:29.51 going up to the heart... where it has to go. 00:15:29.54\00:15:31.58 Instead what we have, are little valves... one way valves 00:15:31.61\00:15:37.26 When the person uses his legs, the muscles tighten around the 00:15:37.29\00:15:41.75 vein and push the blood up past this valve. 00:15:41.78\00:15:44.64 As soon as they relax, it would fall back here, except 00:15:44.67\00:15:47.81 that the valve now shuts, 00:15:47.84\00:15:50.39 and the blood is then in this compartment 00:15:50.42\00:15:53.23 and it will keep on going because there are other 00:15:53.24\00:15:55.46 valves all the way up. 00:15:55.49\00:15:57.49 And different muscles contract and we get the blood going up 00:15:57.52\00:16:01.39 into the trunk. 00:16:01.42\00:16:03.13 The problem that happens with varicose veins, we said, 00:16:03.16\00:16:07.48 was that the person has a lot of pressure in their trunk 00:16:07.51\00:16:12.25 with this bearing down activity like we said a 00:16:12.28\00:16:14.48 weight lifter might do. 00:16:14.51\00:16:15.57 The pressure is so much, that these delicate valves 00:16:15.60\00:16:19.92 in the veins can't withstand it and they actually 00:16:19.95\00:16:23.76 blowup backwards... they will blow out. 00:16:23.79\00:16:26.38 They're built to withstand a certain amount of pressure 00:16:26.41\00:16:29.84 ...reasonable pressures. 00:16:29.87\00:16:31.58 Well, one other kind of situation where these veins 00:16:31.61\00:16:36.34 definitely will blow out, is in childbirth. 00:16:36.37\00:16:40.04 Can you imagine... we men more have to imagine... 00:16:40.07\00:16:45.30 I guess we've seen it, plenty of us, a woman there who is 00:16:45.33\00:16:48.48 bearing down for not just a few seconds of lifting 00:16:48.51\00:16:52.06 a weight, but bearing down with tremendous force 00:16:52.09\00:16:54.91 hopefully alternating at times, over a period of minutes 00:16:54.94\00:16:58.41 but for hours on end. 00:16:58.44\00:17:00.69 Well, it's a real set up that can ruin 00:17:00.72\00:17:04.78 these little valves in the veins. 00:17:04.82\00:17:06.79 And so we end up with varicose veins... 00:17:06.82\00:17:10.53 these bulging veins that not only have discoloration but 00:17:10.54\00:17:14.96 you can see them often bulging right out from 00:17:14.99\00:17:17.26 the rest of the surface in the thigh. 00:17:17.29\00:17:19.89 How would you treat these kinds of people with 00:17:19.92\00:17:24.52 these bulging veins and sometimes they're even painful. 00:17:24.55\00:17:27.71 Yes... I wish it were easy to treat them. 00:17:27.74\00:17:31.88 The valves, once they have blown, 00:17:31.91\00:17:34.09 it's really rather difficult to give a permanent 00:17:34.12\00:17:38.53 curing treatment but we can do some things that will help. 00:17:38.54\00:17:40.73 One very obvious thing, is that when these veins 00:17:41.63\00:17:46.46 have blown out and you've got them bulging now, 00:17:46.49\00:17:49.01 there actually is a fair amount of oozing 00:17:49.04\00:17:51.12 of liquid from the veins so that the rest of the leg 00:17:51.15\00:17:55.69 can become swollen... can become edematous. 00:17:55.72\00:17:59.57 One of the things that will help there, as well as with 00:17:59.60\00:18:02.00 the bulging of the veins, is simply to have the person 00:18:02.03\00:18:04.95 lie down and elevate the legs. 00:18:04.98\00:18:07.99 That might be needed once, twice, maybe more times per day 00:18:08.02\00:18:12.80 for 15 or more minutes... 00:18:12.83\00:18:14.75 to just lie down and have the legs elevated. 00:18:14.78\00:18:17.42 I remember, very well, one gentleman who had this problem 00:18:17.45\00:18:24.05 from other issues, not actually the exact 00:18:24.08\00:18:29.67 same situation I'm talking about but this kind of 00:18:29.70\00:18:31.68 swelling in the legs and he found that having the legs 00:18:31.71\00:18:36.15 perfectly upright was way better than just elevating 00:18:36.18\00:18:38.75 them on a couple of pillows. 00:18:38.78\00:18:39.90 If you have a person inch, while they're lying on their back, 00:18:39.93\00:18:44.26 inch towards a wall, and have the legs upright, 00:18:44.29\00:18:47.96 it supplies perhaps twice the amount of drawing power 00:18:47.99\00:18:51.05 than just putting them up on 2 pillows would. 00:18:51.08\00:18:53.10 So it would be sort of putting them at a 90 degree angle. 00:18:53.13\00:18:56.38 That's exactly right. 00:18:56.41\00:18:57.62 Yes, I could see how the column of fluid would have quite a 00:18:57.65\00:19:01.90 bit of pressure to go BACK into the veins because of 00:19:01.93\00:19:06.57 the fluid would go back into the veins from the pressure of 00:19:06.60\00:19:10.26 gravity... That's it. 00:19:10.29\00:19:12.91 Now, if this problem of the veins gets very advanced, 00:19:12.94\00:19:19.75 you can have very serious changes occur. 00:19:19.78\00:19:21.73 The soft tissue around and the skin, 00:19:21.76\00:19:25.35 can become dark and hardened with times... 00:19:25.38\00:19:29.44 ...scar tissue getting in there, from the amount of swelling 00:19:29.47\00:19:32.07 that's been in place for, not just months, but even years. 00:19:32.10\00:19:34.89 ...what we call brawny edema. 00:19:34.92\00:19:36.98 And if it really gets worse, beyond that, 00:19:37.01\00:19:42.17 you can even have ulcerations form. 00:19:42.18\00:19:44.73 Hopefully at the earlier stages, you'll be able to do more. 00:19:44.74\00:19:48.41 If you don't have the skin badly involved, 00:19:48.44\00:19:51.42 a very simple thing to do is just massage... 00:19:51.45\00:19:54.25 When you have the legs up especially is an ideal thing 00:19:54.28\00:19:56.96 ...massage towards the heart. 00:19:56.99\00:20:00.76 Towards the trunk of the body which is, of course, 00:20:00.79\00:20:02.85 the direction you want that fluid to go. 00:20:02.88\00:20:07.07 Another thing that could be done... 00:20:07.10\00:20:08.97 Again if the skin is intact, is to put on some pressure 00:20:08.98\00:20:12.30 wrap. 00:20:12.33\00:20:13.77 Most people have heard of Ace wrap... 00:20:13.80\00:20:15.96 a sort of tan-colored, elastic kind of wrap. 00:20:15.99\00:20:20.22 You MUST be CAREFUL when you use Ace wrap though. 00:20:20.25\00:20:23.17 Very careful that when we apply it, the high pressure 00:20:23.20\00:20:27.84 must not be UP on the leg here, 00:20:27.87\00:20:30.75 it must be DOWN at the foot. 00:20:30.78\00:20:32.27 You must have HIGH pressure at the more distant areas 00:20:32.30\00:20:37.28 from the trunk... 00:20:37.31\00:20:38.64 And then gradually decrease the pressure as you go 00:20:38.67\00:20:42.14 further up the leg. 00:20:42.17\00:20:43.65 Otherwise, you're putting a constriction on the leg. 00:20:43.68\00:20:48.32 What about such things as garters, and tight bands 00:20:48.35\00:20:54.32 that women wear with stockings that they wear. 00:20:54.36\00:20:57.17 You're reading my mind. 00:20:57.20\00:20:59.81 Because the very point I was making there made me think 00:20:59.84\00:21:02.56 exactly... of what are some other problems 00:21:02.59\00:21:04.33 that affect the veins. 00:21:04.36\00:21:05.89 Those tight garters... in fact, even stockings 00:21:05.92\00:21:09.48 that are too tight at the top are a real problem. 00:21:09.51\00:21:12.76 REMEMBER, veins are not built to withstand pressure. 00:21:12.79\00:21:17.27 And so, if you're blocking the returning blood flow here 00:21:17.30\00:21:20.96 with a tight elastic wrap, or elastic area of stocking, 00:21:20.99\00:21:27.80 your BLOCKING all this blood that's down below 00:21:27.81\00:21:30.43 from getting passed, so we want to avoid all 00:21:30.46\00:21:33.17 of that kind of thing. 00:21:33.18\00:21:34.51 In hospitals, good nurses will often tell the patients 00:21:34.54\00:21:38.00 to snip stockings which they use in hospitals 00:21:38.01\00:21:40.90 if they're a little tight at the top. 00:21:40.93\00:21:43.59 One other thing, I'd like to mention about this very point of 00:21:43.60\00:21:47.59 putting pressure on veins... the areas which are going to 00:21:47.60\00:21:50.06 cause a problem in this return to the heart... 00:21:50.09\00:21:51.84 And that is SITTING in a certain way, or having a seat 00:21:51.87\00:21:57.41 that is constructed in such a way that you get a lot of 00:21:57.44\00:22:00.27 pressure UNDER the thigh. 00:22:00.30\00:22:03.98 If a seat... the edge of the seat, near the knee is 00:22:04.01\00:22:11.72 high compared to what the person's lower leg is... 00:22:11.73\00:22:19.37 in terms of getting support from the floor, 00:22:19.40\00:22:21.62 if the feet are barely touching the floor, 00:22:21.65\00:22:24.81 and, instead, what is holding the knees and the lower legs up, 00:22:24.84\00:22:27.69 is the edge of the seat, then you are putting too much 00:22:27.72\00:22:29.62 pressure behind the knee and, therefore, constricting 00:22:29.65\00:22:32.96 these veins. 00:22:32.99\00:22:34.35 So a short woman, could be expected to have more 00:22:34.38\00:22:37.22 varicose veins if she sits a lot, than a tall woman. 00:22:37.25\00:22:40.98 That's right... assuming the same size of chairs. 00:22:41.01\00:22:43.74 Another issue... I think that can affect some people 00:22:43.77\00:22:48.98 is crossing the legs and I'm talking to myself here 00:22:49.01\00:22:53.92 because I tend to do that a lot. 00:22:53.95\00:22:55.40 But, really, crossing your legs, does exactly the same thing. 00:22:55.43\00:22:59.67 You're putting pressure on those veins which tend 00:22:59.70\00:23:01.91 to run in the BACK, rather than the front of the thigh. 00:23:01.92\00:23:06.02 Well, thank you very much. 00:23:06.05\00:23:07.33 This has been very enlightening and very interesting... 00:23:07.36\00:23:10.13 about the way that the Lord has constructed us. 00:23:10.16\00:23:12.56 And He wants us to have every construction possible 00:23:12.59\00:23:15.81 to do everything that we need to do. 00:23:15.82\00:23:18.13 And in regard to that, I'd like to show you a model 00:23:18.16\00:23:21.23 of the pelvic organs. 00:23:21.26\00:23:23.32 You will see here, the female pelvic organs. 00:23:23.35\00:23:26.95 Here, of course, is the entry. 00:23:26.98\00:23:29.29 And then at the end of that, is the cervix... 00:23:29.32\00:23:33.74 down here at the bottom... I'll turn it this way a little bit so 00:23:33.77\00:23:37.01 that you can see that better. 00:23:37.04\00:23:38.91 And the cervix is a very vulnerable area for cancer, 00:23:38.94\00:23:45.65 especially because viruses now are so common in this area. 00:23:45.68\00:23:51.10 Especially the human papilloma virus. 00:23:51.13\00:23:53.60 It's very common in this area... 00:23:53.63\00:23:55.45 and is likely to cause a problem with infecting the cervix. 00:23:55.48\00:24:00.06 Then is the body of the uterus with the lining of endometrium 00:24:00.09\00:24:05.98 which is that that bleeds every month with the menstrual period. 00:24:06.01\00:24:09.60 When the hormones fall off in the cycle of the woman, 00:24:09.63\00:24:13.88 that sort of knocks the props out from under the lining 00:24:13.91\00:24:17.21 and it then bleeds and that is the menstrual flow. 00:24:17.22\00:24:20.78 But usually not more than 2 or 3 tablespoonsful of blood 00:24:20.81\00:24:25.13 will be lost and a lot of fluid so it looks like a lot of blood 00:24:25.16\00:24:27.88 And then, of course, the fallopian tubes and 00:24:28.46\00:24:31.39 the ovaries here. 00:24:31.42\00:24:32.93 The ovaries are another very vulnerable part of a woman's 00:24:32.96\00:24:36.30 anatomy and can cause a good bit of problem, 00:24:36.33\00:24:39.42 especially problems with cysts or problems with cancer. 00:24:39.45\00:24:43.92 Now, Don Miller is going to assist me now in talking about 00:24:43.95\00:24:49.16 this thing of women's diseases 00:24:49.19\00:24:51.02 And Don Miller is a Lifestyle counselor at Uchee Pines and 00:24:51.05\00:24:54.72 what do you have to talk with us about? 00:24:54.75\00:24:56.15 I want to talk, today, a little bit about early menarche... 00:24:56.18\00:24:59.20 which basically is the time at which a child can reproduce 00:24:59.23\00:25:03.55 its generation, or another way that we can put it is 00:25:03.58\00:25:06.80 when a girl starts her per period. 00:25:06.81\00:25:08.66 We seem to have this desire in our society today 00:25:08.69\00:25:12.98 to see our children grow up very fast. 00:25:13.01\00:25:15.01 And our children are growing up very fast. 00:25:15.04\00:25:17.73 And I don't think we're seeing our children, 00:25:17.76\00:25:19.73 or society in large... getting any better. 00:25:19.76\00:25:23.20 Basically, we want to slow this process down. 00:25:23.23\00:25:27.91 The average age of puberty today is down around 00:25:27.94\00:25:31.17 11 years of age. 00:25:31.20\00:25:32.35 And I read an article some time ago that in some parts 00:25:32.38\00:25:35.36 of the world, in developed countries only, 00:25:35.39\00:25:37.69 it's down as low as 7 and 8 years of age. 00:25:37.72\00:25:40.33 And this is a huge problem because the earlier a 00:25:40.36\00:25:43.27 girl reaches menarche, starts her period, 00:25:43.30\00:25:46.24 the more... with all these new hormones coursing through 00:25:46.27\00:25:49.59 her body, with all these new sensations that she never 00:25:49.62\00:25:52.28 had before, she sort of has something happening 00:25:52.29\00:25:55.04 inside of her body that makes her sort of reach out and 00:25:55.07\00:25:57.97 do things that she should not be doing. 00:25:58.00\00:26:00.13 We see more delinquency. 00:26:00.16\00:26:01.61 We see less scholarship. 00:26:01.64\00:26:03.44 Se see more trouble. 00:26:03.47\00:26:04.50 We see a MUCH LARGER generation gap in the family 00:26:04.53\00:26:07.67 between the child and the parents. 00:26:07.70\00:26:09.57 When you see a BIG generation gap, 00:26:09.60\00:26:12.01 you can pretty much be sure that that child is already 00:26:12.04\00:26:14.81 into their period. 00:26:14.84\00:26:15.93 And so what we want to do is... we want to slow 00:26:15.96\00:26:17.93 that process down. 00:26:17.96\00:26:18.99 We can slow it down by a less refined diet. 00:26:19.03\00:26:22.58 Going into more complex carbohydrates... 00:26:22.61\00:26:25.94 fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. 00:26:25.97\00:26:28.67 We need to get the child in bed on time. 00:26:28.70\00:26:30.96 For some reason, we're letting children 00:26:30.99\00:26:32.50 stay up until ALL hours of the night. 00:26:32.53\00:26:34.16 My bedtime, as a child, was always between 8 and 8:30. 00:26:34.20\00:26:37.98 And it's good to get our children in bed on time. 00:26:38.01\00:26:40.92 And then staying away from the stimulating things that our 00:26:40.96\00:26:43.64 children are exposed to... television, books, movies, 00:26:43.67\00:26:47.11 videos and video games... all these things 00:26:47.14\00:26:49.72 will cause the body to start maturing too quickly. 00:26:49.75\00:26:53.58 A 100 years ago... 120 years ago the average age of menarche 00:26:53.61\00:26:57.12 was around 17 years of age. 00:26:57.15\00:26:59.31 In some parts of the world today, it's still the same way. 00:26:59.34\00:27:02.37 And you just do not see that wanderlust that takes over 00:27:02.40\00:27:06.11 in a child when they have that large generation gap 00:27:06.14\00:27:09.18 because they started their periods too soon. 00:27:09.21\00:27:11.20 We need to slow them down. 00:27:11.23\00:27:13.01 We need to do it with simple diets... 00:27:13.04\00:27:15.18 And we need to BE with our children and help them 00:27:15.21\00:27:17.37 through these transitions. 00:27:17.40\00:27:18.69 And if they are already into it right now, mothers and fathers, 00:27:18.72\00:27:21.53 be with them and help them because it's 00:27:21.56\00:27:23.93 serious times for them... Dr. Thrash. 00:27:23.96\00:27:26.13 Yes it is... a very serious time for a young child. 00:27:26.16\00:27:29.99 I have a quote here that I think is a very good one... 00:27:30.02\00:27:33.43 It says, "You should keep saddening thoughts and 00:27:33.46\00:27:36.24 and saddening subjects away from you. 00:27:36.25\00:27:38.95 Be cheerful, happy, grateful, and have a firm reliance upon 00:27:38.98\00:27:43.33 God and an unshaken confidence and trust in Him. 00:27:43.36\00:27:47.33 Your health will be much better if you control your mind. 00:27:47.36\00:27:52.36 And to that, I can only add Amen. 00:27:52.39\00:27:54.35
