I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician at 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.58 Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:03.61\00:00:05.25 Today, our topic for you is breast disease... 00:00:05.28\00:00:08.54 not only in women but also in men and some in boys. 00:00:08.57\00:00:12.69 So we'd like you to join us. 00:00:12.73\00:00:14.60 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:34.59\00:00:37.30 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.76 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:40.79\00:00:45.23 You know, a lot of lifestyle habits have to do with 00:00:45.26\00:00:49.81 the production of breast disease 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.31 Now, we have learned at Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:52.34\00:00:55.25 that a lot of people who have chocolate in their habit 00:00:55.28\00:00:59.22 ...that they are among those who are likely to get 00:00:59.25\00:01:03.11 breast disease of some kind. 00:01:03.14\00:01:05.01 And so, we'd like to talk with you about various 00:01:05.04\00:01:08.58 lifestyle habits, but I'll talk about chocolate first. 00:01:08.61\00:01:11.55 Now the first thing that we can say is that if a woman 00:01:11.58\00:01:16.41 eats a LOT of chocolate, she's very likely to develop 00:01:16.44\00:01:19.65 a condition called fibrocystic breast disease. 00:01:19.66\00:01:24.26 It's a common breast disorder that a lot of women have. 00:01:24.29\00:01:28.25 It's characterized by painful, sometimes swollen lumps 00:01:28.28\00:01:33.58 that may concern her quite a great deal because 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.61 they may be quite hard and not so easily movable... 00:01:36.64\00:01:39.60 especially when they are inflamed. 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.34 A young woman doctor who was about 30, 00:01:41.37\00:01:44.35 was eating chocolate every day of her life... 00:01:44.38\00:01:48.64 until one day, she went to a foreign mission field 00:01:48.67\00:01:53.01 and while she was there for 3 years, 00:01:53.04\00:01:55.03 she could find no chocolate, so she ate no chocolate 00:01:55.06\00:01:57.41 and during that time, she had no breast disease at all. 00:01:57.44\00:02:01.85 Now this was quite remarkable because she had been having 00:02:01.88\00:02:04.82 a biopsy of her breast for approximately 5 or 6 years 00:02:04.85\00:02:09.44 ...once every 18 months. 00:02:09.47\00:02:11.44 So when she came back and realized that when she started 00:02:11.47\00:02:14.77 eating chocolate again, that her breast disease came back, 00:02:14.80\00:02:17.67 she spoke with her surgeon. 00:02:17.70\00:02:19.40 The two of them began to investigate other women 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.05 who had fibrocystic breast disease. 00:02:22.06\00:02:24.91 And sure enough, they found that a number of women 00:02:24.94\00:02:29.06 would cease to have fibrocystic breast disease 00:02:29.07\00:02:32.41 if they gave up the use of chocolate and sometimes coffee, 00:02:32.44\00:02:37.24 tea and colas as well. 00:02:37.27\00:02:39.14 These are beverages that are related. 00:02:39.17\00:02:41.87 Now because fibrocystic breast disease occurs in women, 00:02:42.88\00:02:47.33 and it really is quite common in women... 00:02:47.37\00:02:49.91 you might think... well, women are those who 00:02:49.94\00:02:54.09 get breast disease. 00:02:54.10\00:02:55.18 But it isn't always so... 00:02:55.21\00:02:57.07 There are times when men get breast disease. 00:02:57.10\00:03:00.43 And Dr. Winn Horsley who is my associate at Uchee Pines, 00:03:00.46\00:03:04.71 is going to be talking with you about that. 00:03:04.74\00:03:07.08 So, this is Dr. Winn Horsley. 00:03:07.11\00:03:10.21 He is one of my associates at Uchee Pines... 00:03:10.24\00:03:13.96 and you're going to talk about, is it "genicomastia?" 00:03:13.99\00:03:19.30 or as I've heard you sometimes say it as a Canadian... 00:03:19.33\00:03:23.69 I've sometimes heard you pronounce it... 00:03:23.72\00:03:26.86 what is it... gynecomastia? 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.84 Which do you prefer? 00:03:28.85\00:03:30.02 Well, you know, I've heard plenty of variation 00:03:30.05\00:03:32.74 on so many words in medicine. 00:03:32.77\00:03:34.36 People think that there's only one right pronunciation... 00:03:34.39\00:03:36.61 but reality is different, I think. 00:03:36.64\00:03:39.11 That is true and I think that in the more British-speaking 00:03:39.14\00:03:44.68 countries like Great Britain, they have a 00:03:44.71\00:03:48.32 a completely different way of speaking about 00:03:48.40\00:03:51.01 medical things and they have have a completely 00:03:51.04\00:03:53.62 different terminology. 00:03:53.65\00:03:55.15 So, what do you have to tell us about genicomastia? 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.31 Well, gynecomastia... I would like to just say one little word 00:03:58.34\00:04:04.33 about the term itself. 00:04:04.36\00:04:05.73 I haven't studied this up in the dictionaries but I 00:04:05.76\00:04:11.73 think the roots are well-enough known. 00:04:11.76\00:04:15.41 "Gyneco" is a root that means "woman," 00:04:15.44\00:04:19.13 as in the word "gynecology" 00:04:19.16\00:04:20.89 Mastia refers to the breast. 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.18 You would think that with that kind of a word, 00:04:24.21\00:04:26.58 you'd be talking only about women but, in fact, 00:04:26.61\00:04:28.62 this is used quite specifically for problems that men can have 00:04:28.63\00:04:33.31 in their breasts. 00:04:33.34\00:04:36.85 One young fellow, an adolescent, when I was in medical school, 00:04:36.88\00:04:41.32 came complaining... 00:04:41.35\00:04:44.20 I think it was his mother who actually came and 00:04:44.23\00:04:47.25 talked to me about him having some pain 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.39 right under his nipples, and little lumps there. 00:04:49.42\00:04:54.71 I looked at it... trying to look like I was full of knowledge, 00:04:54.74\00:04:59.75 but I was as green as could be just starting medical school. 00:04:59.78\00:05:02.14 And, he told me about how this was rather tender and 00:05:02.15\00:05:07.31 painful and he was worried... 00:05:07.34\00:05:10.56 You know, was something developing here that 00:05:10.59\00:05:13.01 would need some drastic treatment. 00:05:13.04\00:05:16.25 I studied up some... on the very issue. 00:05:16.28\00:05:22.01 And fortunately, I was able to counsel patients at that time 00:05:22.04\00:05:27.49 and then in following times that I saw him 00:05:27.52\00:05:31.08 could carry on further in explaining that, in fact, 00:05:31.11\00:05:33.54 this often does happen to adolescent boys. 00:05:33.57\00:05:38.92 Now gynecomastia is used, I would say, even more 00:05:38.95\00:05:46.15 to describe abnormal growth of what is actually breast tissue 00:05:46.18\00:05:52.49 in older men. 00:05:52.52\00:05:53.94 So, let's make it clear, we're not talking about someone 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.75 who's fat... especially fatty around the breasts. 00:05:57.76\00:06:02.18 Or, a man that's got well-developed pectoral muscles 00:06:02.21\00:06:05.49 that will bulge at times. 00:06:05.50\00:06:06.89 And if you put the two together, 00:06:06.92\00:06:08.09 sometimes it does look like there's 00:06:08.12\00:06:09.92 quite a breast there in a man. 00:06:09.95\00:06:11.83 But we're talking instead about actual growth of tissue 00:06:11.86\00:06:16.60 and this would be breast kind of tissue. 00:06:16.61\00:06:18.46 The human males do have some breast tissue... 00:06:18.49\00:06:24.80 In fact, it was a surprise to me not long ago, 00:06:24.83\00:06:28.61 to learn that the incidence of breast cancer 00:06:28.64\00:06:31.33 in men is 1 percent. 00:06:31.36\00:06:34.09 And, in fact, it's more dangerous when they get it, 00:06:34.12\00:06:36.59 than women because there's not a large amount of tissue 00:06:36.62\00:06:40.57 there and it will very quickly invade the chest wall. 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.47 Well, this issue of gynecomastia ... breasts starting to grow 00:06:43.50\00:06:49.97 can come on... 00:06:50.00\00:06:53.76 One of the instances that has stuck in my mind as being 00:06:53.79\00:06:57.25 the most important is in alcoholics. 00:06:57.28\00:07:01.61 Most people realize that with alcoholism, 00:07:01.64\00:07:05.13 you're damaging your liver. 00:07:05.16\00:07:07.24 The liver is the big chemical factory of the body, 00:07:07.27\00:07:09.68 and it handles processing of hormones. 00:07:09.71\00:07:13.23 Both men and women produce some of both 00:07:13.26\00:07:17.00 of the sexes' hormones. 00:07:17.03\00:07:18.90 In other words, men do have things like estrogen 00:07:18.93\00:07:23.34 in their body and, if they're not going to accumulate, 00:07:23.37\00:07:25.90 they have to be gotten rid of by the liver. 00:07:25.93\00:07:27.36 Well, a poisoned liver, a damaged liver 00:07:27.37\00:07:29.93 such as occurs in alcoholism doesn't do this... well. 00:07:29.96\00:07:33.19 And, therefore, there can be this abnormal stimulation 00:07:33.22\00:07:38.23 of whatever breast tissue is there... to start growing. 00:07:38.26\00:07:43.28 A number of other things can lead to gynecomastia and the 00:07:43.31\00:07:48.32 principal point here is drugs. 00:07:48.35\00:07:51.37 There is a fair list of drugs that will do this... 00:07:51.40\00:07:55.51 Obviously hormone type of drugs would do it. 00:07:55.54\00:08:00.30 But, aside from hormones there are others such as... 00:08:00.33\00:08:05.95 digitalis... a drug that used for the heart, 00:08:05.98\00:08:11.74 Reserpine that has been used for high blood pressure, and 00:08:11.77\00:08:16.36 quite a long list of possible drug causes of gynecomastia. 00:08:16.39\00:08:24.58 Now aside from those that are considered medical type of drugs 00:08:24.61\00:08:31.79 We have an example in the illicit drugs... 00:08:31.82\00:08:36.08 marijuana use... 00:08:36.11\00:08:37.37 It has been specifically linked with gynecomastia in males. 00:08:37.40\00:08:43.47 Well that's very interesting and I appreciate that very much. 00:08:43.50\00:08:47.16 You know, we have a lot of problem nowadays with women 00:08:47.19\00:08:52.26 not knowing how to do breastfeeding. 00:08:52.29\00:08:55.51 It has been shown that if a woman breastfeeds, 00:08:55.54\00:08:57.81 she's less likely to have certain types of diseases 00:08:57.84\00:09:00.47 especially cancer of the breast. 00:09:00.50\00:09:02.87 And so, I'd like to show you how a woman should know 00:09:02.90\00:09:06.62 how to do this kind of little office for her infant... 00:09:06.65\00:09:13.13 And here, I have a very nice chart which shows the positions 00:09:13.14\00:09:17.54 that the mother can use in helping her baby to nurse 00:09:17.57\00:09:22.58 and that will be comfortable for her. 00:09:22.59\00:09:24.95 Here is one which is probably most common when the baby 00:09:24.98\00:09:28.03 simply sort of sits in her lap 00:09:28.06\00:09:29.76 and she feeds the baby with the right breast. 00:09:29.79\00:09:33.95 The left breast can be fed with the infant actually behind the 00:09:33.98\00:09:39.29 mother... such as you see here. 00:09:39.30\00:09:41.52 You can see that the infant is sort of tucked under 00:09:41.55\00:09:45.30 the mother's left arm and she is feeding the baby 00:09:45.33\00:09:48.40 from the left breast. 00:09:48.41\00:09:49.75 Then there is also the partial tucked under the left arm 00:09:49.78\00:09:54.87 of the baby with the nipple of the right breast... 00:09:54.90\00:09:59.33 the one that the baby is nursing from. 00:09:59.36\00:10:01.71 But the one that many women like a lot is the one that 00:10:01.74\00:10:06.28 you see here... where the mother is lying down. 00:10:06.31\00:10:09.77 This is often what occurs in the nighttime when the baby 00:10:09.80\00:10:13.79 must be fed during the night, 00:10:13.80\00:10:15.38 then she can continue to lie down and simply take the baby 00:10:15.41\00:10:19.81 cradled in her arm in this way. 00:10:19.84\00:10:22.97 Now, how does she get the baby to take hold... 00:10:23.00\00:10:26.18 That is called "latching on"... 00:10:26.21\00:10:28.61 And here we see that the mother somewhat pinches up her breast 00:10:28.64\00:10:31.78 She supports it from below and sort of squeezes 00:10:31.81\00:10:34.39 a little bit from above and then makes it so that the nipple 00:10:34.42\00:10:38.13 stands out. 00:10:38.16\00:10:39.32 If she just strokes the baby's cheek a little bit, 00:10:39.35\00:10:42.31 the baby will usually open the mouth and turn toward the breast 00:10:42.34\00:10:46.43 And then as the baby moves toward the breast... 00:10:46.44\00:10:50.25 or as she moves the baby toward the breast, 00:10:50.28\00:10:51.80 then she puts the nipple in the baby's mouth. 00:10:51.83\00:10:55.45 Now, the baby gets a good hold on the nipple 00:10:55.48\00:10:59.43 and does not want to turn loose... 00:10:59.46\00:11:01.69 And so consequently, if she wants to feed 00:11:01.72\00:11:04.90 from the other breast, she must disengage the baby 00:11:04.93\00:11:09.04 who is latched on to her with a good bit of suction, 00:11:09.07\00:11:13.26 by simply inserting her finger in the corner of the mouth 00:11:13.29\00:11:16.75 of the baby and that will allow air to go in and 00:11:16.78\00:11:22.14 break the very tight seal that the baby has made 00:11:22.17\00:11:25.82 with the breast. 00:11:25.85\00:11:26.88 And so by doing this, she can perform an important office 00:11:26.89\00:11:32.13 for her baby. 00:11:32.16\00:11:34.55 I don't make a lot of house calls anymore since it became 00:11:34.58\00:11:37.95 so dangerous for women to be out at night alone or even 00:11:37.98\00:11:41.21 out in the daytime alone. 00:11:41.24\00:11:43.50 But generally have people to come to me. 00:11:43.53\00:11:46.36 But there is one reason why I will make a house call... 00:11:46.39\00:11:50.01 And that is if a young mother is threatening to 00:11:50.04\00:11:52.95 stop breastfeeding her baby. 00:11:52.98\00:11:54.75 I generally go, study the way that she does her breastfeeding 00:11:54.78\00:11:59.65 ...how she sits, how she holds the baby, 00:11:59.68\00:12:01.50 the timing of it and all of this kind of thing 00:12:01.53\00:12:04.29 so that I can help her to know that she does not, 00:12:04.32\00:12:07.98 for the most part, need to stop feeding her baby. 00:12:08.01\00:12:11.56 Now, we have here some things about food... 00:12:11.59\00:12:15.78 And... ohh, this looks SO good! 00:12:15.79\00:12:19.66 And I think it's made out of soy... 00:12:19.67\00:12:21.81 It looks very much like a dish that would be good 00:12:21.82\00:12:25.34 for the breast because soy is one of those foods. 00:12:25.37\00:12:28.63 This is Lidia Seda who is my colleague at Uchee Pines. 00:12:28.66\00:12:33.00 She's a Lifestyle counselor... Lidia 00:12:33.03\00:12:35.45 Yes, Dr. Agatha, tofu is quite good for the breast 00:12:35.48\00:12:38.65 and for breast cancer. 00:12:38.68\00:12:40.68 Why? Well, one thing that it has is that it helps 00:12:40.71\00:12:44.10 to lower LDL and LDL is a fat. 00:12:44.13\00:12:48.74 It's not a fat that's beneficial for the body... 00:12:48.77\00:12:50.88 Number 1, it can contribute to atherosclerosis 00:12:50.91\00:12:54.86 and there have been studies in France that show that 00:12:54.89\00:12:57.70 women who eat high amounts of fat, 00:12:57.71\00:13:01.28 will have greater tendencies of getting breast cancer. 00:13:01.31\00:13:05.69 So this is why tofu is an excellent meal to help reduce 00:13:05.72\00:13:09.48 the chances or the likelihood of acquiring 00:13:09.51\00:13:13.18 an illness like breast cancer. 00:13:13.21\00:13:15.22 ALSO, it is high in protein. 00:13:15.25\00:13:19.01 It has about 7.8% protein and is nearly nutritionally complete 00:13:19.04\00:13:25.09 Also, it has iron... about 4.7 mg of iron. 00:13:25.12\00:13:29.46 Now the recommended daily allowance is about 00:13:29.49\00:13:33.41 15 mg for women and 12 for men. 00:13:33.44\00:13:37.33 So if you were to eat about 8 ounces of tofu, 00:13:37.36\00:13:40.70 you will be getting about a fourth of your daily 00:13:40.71\00:13:43.80 recommended requirements. 00:13:43.83\00:13:46.67 Yeah... that's very good. 00:13:46.68\00:13:47.82 So soy is a very nice addition to the American diet 00:13:47.85\00:13:53.22 and, unfortunately, it isn't used as much as it should... 00:13:53.25\00:13:55.95 And I see you have a package here of tofu... 00:13:55.98\00:13:58.55 Where did you get that? 00:13:58.58\00:13:59.69 Well, this was purchased at a health food store 00:13:59.72\00:14:03.06 but you can actually buy this nowadays in ANY supermarket 00:14:03.09\00:14:06.21 It's become quite popular to purchase tofu. 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.79 And something else very interesting about tofu is... 00:14:08.82\00:14:12.13 that it can help individuals, especially women, 00:14:12.16\00:14:15.18 who are either premenopausal, postmenopausal, 00:14:15.21\00:14:19.17 or who are actually going through menopause at this time. 00:14:19.20\00:14:23.11 What happens is, because of its high estrogen, 00:14:23.14\00:14:26.42 it can help not allow those intense episodes of heat to 00:14:26.45\00:14:31.60 be so bothersome... what we would normally call hot flashes. 00:14:31.63\00:14:35.19 So it's very beneficial for women who are going 00:14:35.22\00:14:37.79 through those experiences. 00:14:37.82\00:14:39.28 Where do you buy this... in the frozen foods department, 00:14:39.31\00:14:41.95 or is it on the shelves? 00:14:41.98\00:14:43.55 Well this particular package would be in the 00:14:43.58\00:14:46.26 frozen foods department. 00:14:46.29\00:14:47.93 And now there are other packages that you can buy 00:14:47.96\00:14:50.96 in a box... that you would get just off the shelf as well... 00:14:50.99\00:14:54.99 And they can be used to make a tofu cheesecake if you like. 00:14:55.02\00:14:58.96 Well, do you have a recipe for this delightful dish 00:14:58.99\00:15:02.12 that you showed us earlier? 00:15:02.15\00:15:03.24 Yes... This dish, right here, is called "chipped tofu" 00:15:03.27\00:15:05.86 and this dish... what you would do is you would have a broth 00:15:05.89\00:15:09.58 of what we call "chicken-style seasoning" and water. 00:15:09.61\00:15:13.62 As a matter of fact, you would need: 00:15:13.65\00:15:14.92 2 cups of water and 1 TB of chicken style seasoning 00:15:14.95\00:15:19.93 Along with the following ingredients: 00:15:19.96\00:15:20.93 And this will make a gravy. 00:15:40.33\00:15:41.57 You have then your cubed tofu 00:15:41.60\00:15:44.83 and then you put your gravy with your tofu together... 00:15:44.86\00:15:49.06 You let it boil a little bit... a gentle boil 00:15:49.09\00:15:51.61 And then you have chipped tofu which you can place 00:15:51.64\00:15:54.49 over whole grain brown rice. 00:15:54.52\00:15:56.68 It sounds good and the rice, as I can see there 00:15:56.72\00:15:59.60 looks a little bit different... 00:15:59.64\00:16:01.21 It looks a little fluffy... How'd you get it to do that? 00:16:01.25\00:16:03.39 Well, what I did, Dr. Thrash, is that I placed it in a 00:16:03.42\00:16:10.04 skillet and I dextrinized it for about 30 seconds to 60 seconds. 00:16:10.07\00:16:16.92 And what that does is to help brown it. 00:16:16.95\00:16:20.15 By dextrinize, you mean you heat it, 00:16:20.18\00:16:22.50 and it browns a little bit... Exactly... that's very good. 00:16:22.53\00:16:24.92 You heat it, it browns a bit and this actually cuts 00:16:25.62\00:16:29.54 the cooking time and makes the rice taste 00:16:29.57\00:16:31.94 a little bit nuttier. Ah ha... 00:16:31.95\00:16:33.67 And I placed it in a slow cooker, actually a crock pot 00:16:33.70\00:16:37.03 and after 2 hours, I have nice fluffy rice, not gummy rice 00:16:37.04\00:16:41.71 but fluffy rice. 00:16:41.98\00:16:43.19 I like sticky rice too but most Americans like nice fluffy rice. 00:16:43.22\00:16:49.33 And the wonderful thing about whole grain rice, brown rice... 00:16:49.36\00:16:52.92 is that it has ALL the nutrients that you need, 00:16:52.95\00:16:56.05 especially if someone is trying to combat a cancer 00:16:56.08\00:16:59.69 It has the antioxidants and phytochemicals 00:16:59.72\00:17:02.11 that the individual needs to help guard against cancer 00:17:02.14\00:17:04.66 And it's true that some white rice has the nutrients placed 00:17:04.69\00:17:09.03 back in but usually not ALL the nutrients... 00:17:09.06\00:17:11.37 And we need all the nutrients we can get to be able to 00:17:11.40\00:17:15.72 fight these types of illnesses like breast cancer. 00:17:15.75\00:17:18.69 So that's why I recommend the brown rice 00:17:18.72\00:17:21.13 instead of the white rice. 00:17:21.16\00:17:22.45 Very good, and in places of the world where they use 00:17:22.46\00:17:25.79 a lot of rice, of course, they do have healthier breasts 00:17:25.82\00:17:29.16 and they are much more likely to be strong and 00:17:29.19\00:17:33.37 resistant against a variety of diseases. 00:17:33.40\00:17:38.09 And we have also a number of other 00:17:38.12\00:17:41.89 lifestyle problems that can make us more 00:17:41.92\00:17:45.11 susceptible to disease. 00:17:45.14\00:17:46.47 Another problem that women have is that they often 00:17:46.50\00:17:49.99 wear a lot of padding across the chest and this padding 00:17:50.02\00:17:53.61 or even padded bras or very thick vests, 00:17:53.64\00:17:57.53 that they may wear across the chest... all of these 00:17:57.56\00:18:00.14 can cause a problem for a woman who has a susceptibility 00:18:00.17\00:18:05.14 to problems with the breast... like fibrocystic breast disease 00:18:05.17\00:18:09.23 or cancer of the breast. 00:18:09.26\00:18:11.38 So, one thing that I always teach women to do is 00:18:11.41\00:18:16.08 to be careful about excessive padding on the chest. 00:18:16.11\00:18:21.42 Uplift bras which change the configuration of the breast 00:18:21.45\00:18:25.50 may also be a problem and a source of breast disease for 00:18:25.51\00:18:30.13 women, and of course, a lot of discomfort. 00:18:30.16\00:18:32.00 So the newer bras that do not count on a lot of padding 00:18:32.03\00:18:36.90 and a lot of uplift... these are more helpful 00:18:36.93\00:18:39.64 than the kinds of bras that women have been wearing 00:18:39.67\00:18:43.73 in recent years. 00:18:43.76\00:18:45.11 Now, not only do we have these kinds of lifestyle problems, 00:18:45.14\00:18:51.19 but a lot of other kinds of things are 00:18:51.22\00:18:53.07 involved in the breast. 00:18:53.11\00:18:54.52 And I have here, Don Miller, is one of my counselors at 00:18:54.55\00:18:58.99 Uchee Pines... He's a Lifestyle counselor 00:18:59.02\00:19:00.98 and a longtime colleague... 00:19:01.01\00:19:02.46 And he's going to talk with you now about some other 00:19:02.49\00:19:04.95 lifestyle issues. 00:19:04.98\00:19:06.83 There are some real important things we can do... 00:19:06.86\00:19:09.27 and I want to start with children. 00:19:09.30\00:19:10.82 Even a young girl who takes soybean products 00:19:10.85\00:19:14.37 and Lidia just got done talking about tofu 00:19:14.40\00:19:16.82 which is a popular tofu product, 00:19:16.85\00:19:19.75 but a young girl who takes soy products, 00:19:19.78\00:19:22.88 as a young girl, reduces her risk of breast disease 00:19:22.91\00:19:26.25 by 50% as she gets older. 00:19:26.28\00:19:28.39 And that woman who continues to take soy products 00:19:28.42\00:19:32.15 throughout her life reduces her chances even more. 00:19:32.18\00:19:34.84 And the instance of soy products on the market 00:19:34.85\00:19:38.73 are just unbelievable. 00:19:38.76\00:19:41.61 I use a soymilk all the time. 00:19:41.64\00:19:43.77 And that's my favorite type of milk. 00:19:43.80\00:19:44.97 As a matter of fact, we recommend for women with 00:19:45.00\00:19:47.49 breast disease and breast cancer not to use cow's milk 00:19:47.52\00:19:50.86 because that increases the growth of breast cancers 00:19:50.89\00:19:54.99 But we have soy products... 00:19:55.02\00:19:56.82 As a matter of fact, this one has that little 00:19:56.85\00:19:58.69 international symbol of breast disease, 00:19:58.72\00:20:02.07 or sympathy for people with breast disease... 00:20:02.08\00:20:04.73 The little pink ribbon... and this comes on these containers. 00:20:04.76\00:20:07.87 And they're telling you, "This is good. " 00:20:07.90\00:20:10.13 Another nice thing about soy products, 00:20:10.16\00:20:12.35 and I like this... is normally if it's a 00:20:12.38\00:20:14.49 soy product, you don't have this long list of ingredients 00:20:14.52\00:20:19.65 This is the way I do my shopping... 00:20:19.68\00:20:21.00 Whenever I go shopping, if I want to find if a product 00:20:21.03\00:20:24.47 that I want to eat is good, I take off my glasses 00:20:24.48\00:20:28.24 and I look at the ingredients. 00:20:28.27\00:20:29.99 And if I can't read the ingredients, which are 00:20:30.02\00:20:32.27 usually in very, very small print, 00:20:32.30\00:20:34.17 I figure there are things in there I don't think I 00:20:34.20\00:20:36.61 want to put in my body. 00:20:36.64\00:20:37.81 As a matter of fact, sometimes I have to take a magnifying 00:20:37.82\00:20:41.12 glass just to discover what other people are eating 00:20:41.15\00:20:43.35 and say, "I don't think we want those things in our bodies" 00:20:43.38\00:20:45.88 As a matter of fact, I'm reading in this one... 00:20:45.91\00:20:47.74 something that's not good for women who have breast 00:20:47.77\00:20:50.47 disease... and that would be a hydrogenated fat. 00:20:50.50\00:20:52.87 And so, if you see hydrogenated fats, or partially hydrogenated 00:20:52.90\00:20:56.58 fats... don't use those things. 00:20:56.61\00:20:58.26 They're bad for women with breast cancer. 00:20:58.29\00:21:01.38 And so, find things that you can read without your glasses 00:21:01.41\00:21:04.90 and if you got great eyesight, still... only 4 or 5 ingredients 00:21:04.93\00:21:08.83 But there are many, many soy products out there. 00:21:08.86\00:21:11.74 There are the soymilks... 00:21:11.77\00:21:12.95 There is the tofu that Lidia talked about... 00:21:12.98\00:21:14.85 There are soy cheeses. 00:21:14.88\00:21:16.20 There are soy cream cheeses. 00:21:16.21\00:21:17.99 There are soy sour cheeses... yeah, right. 00:21:18.02\00:21:20.95 There are soybeans. 00:21:20.98\00:21:22.73 There are baked soybeans and Henry Ford once 00:21:22.76\00:21:24.85 made a soy car. 00:21:24.88\00:21:26.09 And so, there are lots of things you can do with soybeans 00:21:26.12\00:21:28.82 and I suggest that we eat those things 00:21:28.85\00:21:30.55 because they'll make our bodies feel a whole lot better. 00:21:30.58\00:21:32.54 But there are other things besides soy products 00:21:32.57\00:21:35.04 that we can eat that will make our bodies safer 00:21:35.07\00:21:37.53 and NOT just the women who might get or do have 00:21:37.56\00:21:40.36 breast cancer, but ALL of US should be eating these things 00:21:40.39\00:21:43.38 As a matter of fact, our mothers have been telling us 00:21:43.41\00:21:45.18 how to prevent all these cancers since we were children. 00:21:45.21\00:21:47.74 She'd lean over and she'd say, "Eat your vegetables" 00:21:47.77\00:21:50.83 And so, we should eat our vegetables. 00:21:50.86\00:21:52.32 The Brassica family... The cruciferous family... 00:21:52.35\00:21:55.08 The mustard family... 00:21:55.09\00:21:56.06 All of these foods... " 00:27:46.73\00:27:47.80 It is our desire that we can teach you some things 00:27:47.83\00:27:50.78 that will be of eternal blessing 00:27:50.81\00:27:52.65 to you and to your family. 00:27:52.68\00:27:53.65
