I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.24 at Uchee Pines Institute in Seale, Alabama 00:00:03.27\00:00:06.35 We have a medical missionary training school 00:00:06.38\00:00:10.21 and we train our students to help people learn how to take 00:00:10.24\00:00:14.04 better care of their own health... 00:00:14.07\00:00:15.71 And to take more responsibility for their own health. 00:00:15.74\00:00:19.18 We're going to be talking about some of these things 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.64 ...how you can take more responsibility for your own 00:00:21.67\00:00:24.32 health and for the minor afflictions that plague 00:00:24.35\00:00:28.13 mankind in the next half an hour. 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.43 We hope you will join us. 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.49 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:52.06\00:00:54.08 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:54.11\00:00:57.84 And now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:57.87\00:01:01.87 A very common problem that we see is nausea and vomiting. 00:01:02.95\00:01:06.95 This may be more in the young than it is in older people. 00:01:07.19\00:01:11.19 Somehow babies and children seem to be troubled with 00:01:11.99\00:01:15.99 nausea and vomiting more than adults... 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.98 And frequently, the mother calls and says, 00:01:19.01\00:01:22.43 "My child has vomited X number of times and I can't 00:01:22.46\00:01:25.81 get the child to stop, and she has no appetite. 00:01:25.84\00:01:28.54 She doesn't want to sleep and I can't comfort 00:01:28.57\00:01:32.34 her in any way... What can I do?" 00:01:32.38\00:01:34.12 Well there are a number of things... 00:01:34.16\00:01:35.87 and probably the very first thing that you should try 00:01:35.90\00:01:38.19 with a case of nausea and vomiting in a child is charcoal. 00:01:38.22\00:01:42.22 Mix up some charcoal in some water. 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.50 Mix it up fairly thick but still make it a water so that 00:01:44.51\00:01:48.51 it can be sipped through a straw. 00:01:49.36\00:01:51.08 And then offer it to the child and hope that the child will 00:01:51.11\00:01:53.98 get enough in the stomach so that it makes the stomach 00:01:54.01\00:01:57.57 less irritable and the nausea to be less. 00:01:57.60\00:02:01.60 Now another thing that you can do is carob paste. 00:02:02.82\00:02:06.72 Sometimes a child will not accept charcoal. 00:02:06.75\00:02:10.32 If this is the case, then you can try carob... 00:02:10.35\00:02:14.25 because carob has a large amount of pectin in it 00:02:14.28\00:02:18.28 and a variety of other sedative substances in it 00:02:18.68\00:02:23.02 that make it so that it's quite ideal for helping babies with 00:02:23.06\00:02:28.68 nausea and vomiting. 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.00 Furthermore, they're likely to accept it because 00:02:30.01\00:02:32.41 it has a slight sweet flavor and doesn't feel 00:02:32.44\00:02:36.38 too bad in the mouth... 00:02:36.41\00:02:37.63 And so a child will often accept it unless the nausea is 00:02:37.67\00:02:41.67 really quite severe. 00:02:42.04\00:02:43.62 And I have asked my granddaughter, Melissa, 00:02:43.65\00:02:46.18 if she will mix up some charcoal powder for us... 00:02:46.19\00:02:50.02 and I will tell you just exactly how it's done. 00:02:50.05\00:02:52.53 The first thing that you do is to put some 00:02:52.56\00:02:57.26 carob powder in a glass, or a cup 00:02:57.29\00:03:00.94 and you can put a fair amount, maybe a tablespoonful or more. 00:03:01.69\00:03:05.69 And then, put a little water in it and stir it around. 00:03:07.91\00:03:11.78 Now you will find that carob goes into solution a lot 00:03:11.81\00:03:15.08 easier than charcoal does. 00:03:15.11\00:03:16.71 But the paste that you develop with the stirring, 00:03:16.74\00:03:22.76 is sometimes very thick and sometimes quite thin, 00:03:23.94\00:03:27.94 and either way, it works quite nicely. 00:03:27.98\00:03:30.49 Now, it looks as if Melissa's paste is going to be a little 00:03:30.50\00:03:33.61 on the thin side... That's fine. 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.55 Just let them sip it. 00:03:35.58\00:03:37.17 If it's a paste that's thick, 00:03:37.20\00:03:39.70 then you let them nibble it. 00:03:39.73\00:03:41.18 How's it looking, Melissa? 00:03:41.21\00:03:42.99 Um, well it looks sort of like... Yes, I think that this 00:03:43.02\00:03:47.02 could be sipped... 00:03:48.50\00:03:49.56 Just take a little bit from the spoon... like this 00:03:49.59\00:03:53.04 and just give this to the child just a tiny, little bit... 00:03:53.07\00:03:57.07 It doesn't have to be a large quantity, just a tiny little bit 00:03:57.59\00:04:01.19 And almost immediately, the child will have a settling 00:04:01.22\00:04:05.20 of the stomach. 00:04:05.23\00:04:06.47 This settling of the stomach is usually sufficient so that 00:04:06.50\00:04:10.50 they're willing to take a little more. 00:04:11.27\00:04:12.90 Then the charcoal may come after that. 00:04:12.93\00:04:16.18 If they have refused it before, 00:04:16.21\00:04:17.52 then the charcoal may come after that. 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.31 Now I often have this kind of situation with nausea and 00:04:19.35\00:04:23.35 vomiting that mothers take care of and that is... 00:04:24.47\00:04:27.57 They give the charcoal and it is vomited again. 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.62 Then they don't think to give it anymore. 00:04:30.65\00:04:32.95 They say, "Well, I gave it to my child... 00:04:32.98\00:04:35.02 the child vomited it back" 00:04:35.05\00:04:36.37 Of course, that means that they don't accept it. 00:04:36.40\00:04:39.96 But the important thing for you to remember in any case 00:04:39.99\00:04:43.66 of nausea and vomiting... 00:04:43.69\00:04:44.72 whether it be your own, or whether it be someone else... 00:04:44.75\00:04:47.52 that is just after the vomiting, 00:04:47.55\00:04:50.79 there may be a refractory period in which there is no 00:04:50.82\00:04:54.12 nausea, and during that time, 00:04:54.13\00:04:56.37 you can more readily accept a large amount of either 00:04:56.40\00:05:00.40 carob or of the charcoal, and that can be most helpful. 00:05:01.67\00:05:05.67 Of course, a cool compress to the stomach can also be helpful. 00:05:05.71\00:05:09.71 Sometimes some aroma therapy can be good like mint or pine 00:05:09.97\00:05:16.59 or vanilla... or some other nice aroma in the air 00:05:16.62\00:05:24.82 can sometimes be helpful. 00:05:24.85\00:05:26.06 On the other hand, sometimes ANY aroma of ANY kind 00:05:26.10\00:05:31.71 especially food cooking, the odors from the kitchen 00:05:32.05\00:05:35.69 may just be particularly obnoxious to the individual 00:05:35.72\00:05:39.72 with nausea and vomiting. 00:05:40.32\00:05:41.67 So you have to always watch and see just what is the situation 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.70 with the patient and cooperate as well as you can 00:05:47.65\00:05:50.96 with the patient. 00:05:50.99\00:05:52.64 Okay, this is one way that a person can take 00:05:52.67\00:05:56.18 some responsibility for their own health. 00:05:56.21\00:05:58.43 And now Don Miller, who is one of my cohorts at Uchee Pines 00:05:58.44\00:06:02.16 will tell you about another way you can take responsibility 00:06:02.19\00:06:05.53 for your health... Don Miller 00:06:05.56\00:06:06.86 Okay... one way to take responsibility for your health 00:06:06.89\00:06:10.31 is recognize what out there is going to hurt you. 00:06:10.34\00:06:13.86 Now I'm going to talk about something that has never 00:06:13.89\00:06:15.35 in my life bothered me before, and it hasn't to this day, 00:06:15.38\00:06:19.08 but it might! 00:06:19.12\00:06:20.43 This particular thing I'm going to talk about sometimes 00:06:20.47\00:06:24.47 changes in a person. 00:06:24.74\00:06:25.95 A person may be immune for a long, long time 00:06:25.98\00:06:28.39 and all of a sudden one day, showing off... 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.06 saying, "Look, I can do this with no problem" 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.16 And now they have the problem. 00:06:32.19\00:06:33.63 I'm talking about the situation that some people have 00:06:33.66\00:06:37.14 TERRIBLY in the summertime and that's called 00:06:37.17\00:06:39.49 poison ivy. 00:06:39.52\00:06:40.52 I am immune to poison ivy. 00:06:40.55\00:06:43.00 I can say... Let me put it this way... 00:06:43.03\00:06:45.16 Up until today, I have been immune to poison ivy. 00:06:45.19\00:06:48.76 But the thing about poison ivy... 00:06:48.79\00:06:51.21 It can change from person to person, 00:06:51.24\00:06:53.86 it can change from time to time. 00:06:53.89\00:06:56.10 And so I've sort of learned in my years 00:06:56.13\00:06:59.28 ...let's don't tempt fate out here. 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.77 Let's learn to recognize what it looks like. 00:07:01.80\00:07:04.68 Now before this program began, I went outside 00:07:04.71\00:07:08.10 looking for some poison ivy. 00:07:08.13\00:07:09.59 I wanted to come in and show you some poison ivy 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.05 and hold it and squeeze the leaves and all these things... 00:07:12.08\00:07:14.21 but I didn't want to end up itching in front of you 00:07:14.24\00:07:16.24 and I couldn't find any anyway... 00:07:16.27\00:07:17.30 Out here at 3ABN, they just don't have 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.49 poison ivy, and that's pretty nice. 00:07:19.52\00:07:20.68 But basically, most of you, if you get poison ivy, 00:07:20.71\00:07:24.53 you know what it looks like, 00:07:24.56\00:07:25.96 and if you DON'T know what it looks like, 00:07:25.99\00:07:27.99 and you are allergic to it, 00:07:28.02\00:07:29.92 your best remedy is to learn how to identify it, 00:07:29.95\00:07:33.95 and then how to avoid it. 00:07:34.16\00:07:36.06 Basically, it's 3 leaves, one on the end of the stem 00:07:36.09\00:07:40.09 and then 2 across from each other, a little bit down 00:07:40.52\00:07:43.02 on the stem... it's basically 3 leaves 00:07:43.05\00:07:44.87 that tells you this is poison ivy. 00:07:44.90\00:07:48.15 In the fall, it might have some berries on it. 00:07:48.16\00:07:50.55 Be very careful of your poison ivy. 00:07:50.56\00:07:53.04 And, it's basically spread by an oil. 00:07:53.07\00:07:56.51 It's a resin. It's a volatile oil and called "urushiol" 00:07:56.54\00:08:00.54 And, if it comes in contact either directly or even 00:08:00.65\00:08:04.09 indirectly with your skin, and you are sensitive, 00:08:04.12\00:08:07.40 you WILL get poison ivy. 00:08:07.41\00:08:08.92 Now how can you get poison ivy if you don't touch it. 00:08:08.95\00:08:12.22 Well, it can come in on your pet. 00:08:12.25\00:08:14.76 If your pet has been out there rolling, walking 00:08:14.79\00:08:16.58 through it, and you pet the animal, 00:08:16.61\00:08:18.63 you're going to get poison ivy if that animal has come 00:08:18.66\00:08:21.69 in contact with the poison ivy. 00:08:21.72\00:08:23.45 It can get on someone's clothing and as you are getting ready 00:08:23.48\00:08:26.45 to do the laundry, mothers, or fathers... 00:08:26.46\00:08:28.49 whoever does the laundry. 00:08:28.52\00:08:29.51 If you touch the clothing, you can get the poison ivy. 00:08:29.54\00:08:33.04 It may be on some tools. 00:08:33.07\00:08:34.89 Even droplets of poison ivy, or this volatile oil, 00:08:34.93\00:08:39.74 this resin... can be in smoke from a fire. 00:08:39.77\00:08:42.85 I know people who have gotten poison ivy 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.93 from poison ivy being burned a few yards away 00:08:45.96\00:08:49.96 because they walked through the smoke, 00:08:50.16\00:08:51.96 and somehow these droplets have been carried on the smoke 00:08:51.99\00:08:54.75 because they've been heated up, carried through, 00:08:54.78\00:08:57.20 and the person gets the poison ivy. 00:08:57.23\00:08:59.19 And so, my recommendation is... avoid it by learning 00:08:59.22\00:09:03.22 how to identify it. 00:09:03.60\00:09:05.15 And if you DO get into poison ivy, 00:09:05.18\00:09:07.98 if you DO get exposed to it, 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.78 and you know you've been exposed... 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.72 IMMEDIATELY wash yourself. 00:09:12.75\00:09:15.96 If you've been out there in the woods working, 00:09:15.99\00:09:18.25 and you don't know whether you have it or not, 00:09:18.26\00:09:19.74 and you are allergic, 00:09:19.77\00:09:20.76 it's good always... to wash yourself very well anyway. 00:09:20.77\00:09:24.46 Wash good with soap and water, rinse extremely well. 00:09:24.49\00:09:28.23 Now God is very good to His children... 00:09:28.26\00:09:31.58 and when somehow in however poison ivy came about being... 00:09:31.62\00:09:35.81 He's also placed IN NATURE, the remedy for the poison ivy 00:09:36.01\00:09:40.01 right out there. 00:09:41.13\00:09:42.32 Many times, around poison ivy, you'll find Virginia creeper, 00:09:42.35\00:09:45.86 or Jewelweed growing and the sap from those things 00:09:45.89\00:09:51.85 rubbed on the skin will help denature, or take away 00:09:52.53\00:09:56.53 these volatile oils and these resins and keep you from 00:09:56.89\00:10:00.26 getting the poison ivy. 00:10:00.29\00:10:01.48 So, first avoid it. 00:10:01.51\00:10:03.30 2... if you have come in contact or think you've come in contact 00:10:03.33\00:10:07.33 with it, wash well. 00:10:07.82\00:10:09.62 And, for people like me who've never had it, 00:10:09.65\00:10:12.53 don't' tempt fate. 00:10:12.56\00:10:14.05 I used to.. for people... they'd say, "Oh, I've got poison ivy " 00:10:14.09\00:10:17.31 I'd go out there and I'd pull it with my bare hands 00:10:17.34\00:10:18.65 and I'd rub it in my hands... 00:10:18.68\00:10:20.11 You know... just sort of showing off and I'd throw it away. 00:10:20.14\00:10:22.05 Never bothered me. Never has to this day. 00:10:22.08\00:10:24.84 But one of these days... 00:10:24.85\00:10:26.07 because I'm getting older, 00:10:26.08\00:10:28.08 immune system gets a little bit weaker, 00:10:28.11\00:10:30.01 I might have a response. 00:10:30.04\00:10:31.99 And I have seen people with poison ivy so bad 00:10:32.02\00:10:36.02 they couldn't sleep and they were just in misery. 00:10:37.11\00:10:40.66 I want to avoid that type of misery, Dr. Thrash, 00:10:40.69\00:10:43.19 so I want to avoid poison ivy. 00:10:43.22\00:10:45.37 Yes, you're very wise and what you have said is 00:10:45.40\00:10:48.64 certainly very good. 00:10:48.67\00:10:50.20 Now if you should get poison ivy and it is an allergic reaction 00:10:50.23\00:10:54.23 so that you have it all over, 00:10:54.42\00:10:55.83 you may want to take some of the anti-inflammatory herbs 00:10:55.86\00:10:59.86 And there are a number of these and I have written a number down 00:10:59.90\00:11:03.34 Some of these are very familiar and some of them you may not 00:11:03.37\00:11:07.37 know as being anti-inflammatory. 00:11:07.95\00:11:10.39 Of course everyone knows that flaxseed is anti-inflammatory. 00:11:10.42\00:11:14.42 And flaxseed oil... it's 1 to 2 tablespoons of the flaxseed oil 00:11:14.65\00:11:19.51 once or twice a day as the severity of the case may dictate 00:11:19.54\00:11:25.34 The anti-inflammatory quality of flax oil may make the 00:11:25.38\00:11:30.92 swelling less and the person may be able to see out of their 00:11:32.12\00:11:35.53 swollen eyes, or breathe out of their swollen nose, 00:11:35.56\00:11:39.29 or write with their swollen fingers... just by taking the 00:11:39.32\00:11:43.32 flaxseed oil. 00:11:43.40\00:11:44.54 Then another anti-inflammatory is hawthorn berry. 00:11:44.58\00:11:48.05 Hawthorn berry has a number of good properties 00:11:48.08\00:11:51.52 and almost everybody thinks of the heart when they think 00:11:51.55\00:11:55.55 of hawthorn berry. 00:11:55.62\00:11:56.83 But it also has an excellent anti-inflammatory quality. 00:11:56.86\00:12:00.62 Boswellia is another of those anti-inflammatory agents 00:12:00.65\00:12:04.65 and you'll want to use that also. 00:12:04.91\00:12:07.66 Turmeric... just the common turmeric that we use in the 00:12:07.69\00:12:10.66 kitchen, also has a very good anti-inflammatory agency. 00:12:10.69\00:12:14.69 Ginger and rosemary and oregano... these common 00:12:15.51\00:12:19.51 kitchen herbs also have a good anti-inflammatory factor 00:12:19.68\00:12:23.68 and these should be used in cases of when one 00:12:24.28\00:12:28.28 gets the poison ivy. 00:12:28.37\00:12:29.56 Now another thing that you can use for poison ivy is 00:12:29.59\00:12:33.19 very thin slices... extremely thin slices of onion. 00:12:33.22\00:12:37.22 You can even use that membrane that's between the layers 00:12:37.73\00:12:41.68 of an onion and just put that membrane of put the very thin 00:12:41.71\00:12:45.70 slice of onion right on the place where you have the 00:12:45.73\00:12:49.73 poison ivy and that can be very helpful too. 00:12:50.10\00:12:52.84 Plain vinegar can give you a little anesthetic agency... 00:12:52.85\00:12:56.85 so can a baking soda paste. 00:12:57.23\00:13:00.06 So make up a little baking soda paste and put that on the place 00:13:00.09\00:13:03.47 where you have the poison ivy... 00:13:03.50\00:13:05.07 and that will give you a little anesthetic quality 00:13:05.10\00:13:08.14 And that, of course, makes you FEEL better. 00:13:08.17\00:13:11.20 But the thing that I think I have found to be the most 00:13:11.23\00:13:14.48 helpful in poison ivy itching 00:13:14.51\00:13:16.81 is a hot bath or a hot treatment of some kind. 00:13:16.84\00:13:19.62 If you have the poison ivy on an extremity... 00:13:19.65\00:13:22.49 if you hold that extremity in a hot shower, 00:13:22.52\00:13:25.63 while it burns very severely while you're holding it 00:13:25.66\00:13:28.87 in even just a moderately warm shower, 00:13:28.90\00:13:32.90 and when you turn it on to hot, it burns even more severely 00:13:33.23\00:13:36.18 But, once you stop after about 3 minutes of holding your 00:13:36.21\00:13:40.21 part in the hot water, after that... 00:13:40.68\00:13:44.49 then you will have a good bit of relief of the itching 00:13:44.52\00:13:48.52 for a number of hours. 00:13:48.68\00:13:50.41 Sometimes it may even be 8 or 10 hours that you can have 00:13:50.44\00:13:54.19 relief from itching. 00:13:54.22\00:13:55.81 Now an interesting thing, if you begin to scratch it, 00:13:55.84\00:13:58.83 then right away, it begins to itch some more. 00:13:58.86\00:14:01.38 One of the reasons for that is that... by the scratching 00:14:01.41\00:14:04.49 process, you squeeze some histamine into the tissues. 00:14:04.52\00:14:08.52 Histamine is normally held inside the cells and in little 00:14:08.87\00:14:13.37 capsules and by scratching, you can rupture those little 00:14:13.41\00:14:17.88 capsules and the histamine is released, 00:14:18.00\00:14:21.48 and that causes a near pain and itching and pain... 00:14:21.51\00:14:25.51 are carried on the same nerve pathways, 00:14:25.92\00:14:28.10 so you perceive it not as pain but as itching... 00:14:28.13\00:14:31.36 and that can be extremely intense. 00:14:31.39\00:14:34.64 So these are a few remedies. 00:14:34.67\00:14:36.58 There are hundreds of other remedies for poison ivy 00:14:36.61\00:14:39.93 and you can find those if you go searching for them. 00:14:39.96\00:14:43.92 And now, Don Miller has something else for us. 00:14:43.95\00:14:46.99 Okay... One of the most distressing things we can 00:14:47.00\00:14:49.77 come up against is some type of a bronchial problem... 00:14:49.80\00:14:53.10 whether it's asthma or bronchitis, whatever else... 00:14:53.13\00:14:55.94 And it's good in these situations to be able to breathe 00:14:55.97\00:14:58.55 something medicated... something good for us... 00:14:58.58\00:15:00.82 and something simple! 00:15:00.83\00:15:02.24 And a number of years ago, I was in Austria, 00:15:02.27\00:15:05.25 and I got really sick. 00:15:05.28\00:15:07.25 And I was so sick, I was told to go to my room and go to bed 00:15:07.29\00:15:12.23 ...which you have to do with me because I'm one of these types 00:15:12.69\00:15:14.94 no matter how sick I am, I'll try to keep going. 00:15:14.95\00:15:17.52 I remember the last day, before they told me to do this, 00:15:17.55\00:15:20.18 I had to stop every once in a while and sit down and rest 00:15:20.21\00:15:23.28 and I don't DO this. 00:15:23.31\00:15:24.65 I don't get that sick but I got extremely sick. 00:15:24.68\00:15:27.31 And every evening, the director of the school where I was 00:15:27.32\00:15:31.32 teaching, would come into my room and he'd open up the door, 00:15:32.13\00:15:34.37 he'd take one look at me and he'd say... 00:15:34.40\00:15:36.10 "Oh my," and I thought, Oh, I must look like I'm DYING! 00:15:36.14\00:15:41.04 Now, a good remedy is... if you are treating somebody 00:15:41.53\00:15:45.53 NEVER do that to them! 00:15:46.84\00:15:48.29 Because it really put my spirits down to have him look at 00:15:48.32\00:15:51.98 me one time and look away and say, "Oh my. " 00:15:52.01\00:15:55.36 You need to encourage your patient. 00:15:55.39\00:15:57.53 But, bless his heart, he did a lot of good things for me. 00:15:57.56\00:15:59.98 One day, he brought me a present. 00:16:00.01\00:16:01.84 And the present was... this little apparatus right here. 00:16:01.87\00:16:05.81 Very, very nice... I have not seen one in America yet. 00:16:05.84\00:16:09.84 He got this for me probably over in Germany. 00:16:11.33\00:16:14.33 But it's a very nice apparatus. 00:16:14.36\00:16:16.71 Basically what it is, is a little bowl... 00:16:16.74\00:16:19.05 And what I would do is, I'd put hot water in there. 00:16:19.06\00:16:22.20 I'd have a little pot going... a little poly pot type thing. 00:16:22.23\00:16:26.13 boil water, pour the boiling water into this little thing. 00:16:26.16\00:16:30.16 Then I'd pour some type of an essence... usually eucalyptus. 00:16:31.11\00:16:35.11 And I'd put a few drops of the eucalyptus oil into this 00:16:35.73\00:16:39.53 steaming little cup of water and then I would put 00:16:39.56\00:16:43.21 this part back on, lock it down... 00:16:43.24\00:16:46.27 and place it over my nose... 00:16:46.31\00:16:49.39 and breathe these fumes. 00:16:49.42\00:16:52.47 It was SO nice for my mucous membranes, 00:16:53.03\00:16:57.03 for my bronchial tree, for my lungs! 00:16:57.52\00:16:59.71 I felt great! 00:16:59.74\00:17:00.74 We're told that there is healing in the eucalyptus. 00:17:00.77\00:17:03.90 There is also healing in the balsam and in the pine. 00:17:03.93\00:17:07.31 And so by breathing these things... 00:17:07.34\00:17:09.20 because I was getting dry, and when you're getting sick 00:17:09.23\00:17:11.70 you've got to really increase your water intake. 00:17:11.73\00:17:14.19 As a matter of fact, I once heard it said, 00:17:14.22\00:17:15.96 that if you're sick, you should have to go to the bathroom 00:17:15.99\00:17:18.28 every hour. 00:17:18.29\00:17:19.31 That means you are really hydrating yourself. 00:17:19.34\00:17:21.94 When you're sick, drink the water. 00:17:21.97\00:17:23.33 But hydrating and helping the bronchial tree 00:17:23.36\00:17:26.77 because I had... it sounded like and we sort of 00:17:26.80\00:17:29.56 diagnosed it as pertussis. 00:17:29.59\00:17:30.85 I had whooping cough and as a matter of fact, 00:17:30.88\00:17:33.94 I hurt for months afterward and my voice did not 00:17:33.97\00:17:36.32 completely recover... 00:17:36.35\00:17:37.32 Really, it hasn't completely recovered now and this 00:17:37.36\00:17:40.02 was about 3 years ago. 00:17:40.05\00:17:41.57 So, we need to take care of ourselves. 00:17:41.60\00:17:43.50 And so this is very nice. 00:17:43.53\00:17:44.89 There's another way that we can put some nice essences... 00:17:44.90\00:17:48.90 some nice healing properties into our lungs and again... 00:17:49.58\00:17:53.58 I didn't find this in America. 00:17:55.30\00:17:57.31 And I can't tell which is upside-down or backwards 00:17:57.34\00:17:59.71 but I bought this thing when I was in Ukraine recently. 00:17:59.74\00:18:02.87 Very nice little apparatus... 00:18:02.88\00:18:05.79 and what you do with this... it has 2 parts to it 00:18:05.82\00:18:09.66 It has this thing that looks sort of like a pipe. 00:18:09.69\00:18:13.66 And then it has another piece that has a little "Y" on it 00:18:14.61\00:18:18.61 with 2 little bulbs and a little rubber sleeve 00:18:19.73\00:18:22.77 and you put this rubber sleeve over the long part 00:18:22.80\00:18:26.29 of the first part... 00:18:26.32\00:18:28.08 And what you do is, you fill it with water 00:18:28.11\00:18:30.58 up to just starting into this bulb here. 00:18:30.61\00:18:33.53 Then you drop some essence in here. 00:18:33.56\00:18:35.95 And then you would place this thing in your nose 00:18:35.98\00:18:38.76 and breathe. 00:18:38.79\00:18:41.28 What would happen there, you wouldn't suck the water up 00:18:41.31\00:18:43.40 because of all these little side streets 00:18:43.43\00:18:46.61 ...it would go up so far but you would be basically 00:18:46.64\00:18:49.45 bringing into your nostrils, into your sinuses passages 00:18:49.48\00:18:53.16 ...into your bronchial tree 00:18:53.19\00:18:55.08 moistened and treated air. 00:18:55.11\00:18:58.57 ...which is exactly what you need in these situations. 00:18:58.60\00:19:01.13 So I find something as simple as this to be... 00:19:01.16\00:19:05.13 to me is a must-have piece of equipment in my 00:19:06.35\00:19:10.33 armamentarium against diseases. 00:19:10.37\00:19:12.07 So I carry this with me and if I get sick, I've got a few bottles 00:19:12.11\00:19:15.22 of essences, especially eucalyptus... 00:19:15.26\00:19:17.18 and I will breathe this in, and it gives me 00:19:17.53\00:19:20.85 unbelievable relief in my sinus passages and 00:19:20.88\00:19:24.62 in my bronchial tree, Dr. Thrash. 00:19:24.65\00:19:26.84 It's an amazing device and I think in other countries 00:19:26.87\00:19:30.23 where they take more responsibility for their own 00:19:30.26\00:19:32.37 health, they have a lot of little devices of this nature 00:19:32.40\00:19:35.46 which makes it more easy for you to take 00:19:35.49\00:19:38.37 responsibility for your own health. 00:19:38.41\00:19:40.08 A lot of people have allergies these days and 00:19:40.12\00:19:43.47 more people getting them all the time. 00:19:43.50\00:19:45.15 I think that's because we're exposed to so many chemicals 00:19:45.18\00:19:49.14 in our environment. 00:19:49.17\00:19:51.01 Airborne allergens are very important for us. 00:19:51.04\00:19:55.49 And those who have airborne allergens who respond to those, 00:19:55.53\00:20:01.07 they need to understand how to reduce these in their own home. 00:20:01.10\00:20:06.61 And I have a graphic to show you that I think might 00:20:06.68\00:20:09.84 be helpful to you... 00:20:09.88\00:20:10.86 One that shows you the kind of program that you can 00:20:10.89\00:20:14.78 have in your own home. 00:20:14.82\00:20:15.96 A graphic that tells a schedule 00:20:16.00\00:20:20.00 and also gives you a list of things that you 00:20:20.41\00:20:23.63 should have and should not have. 00:20:23.66\00:20:25.08 The first thing is... No houseplants or knickknacks. 00:20:25.12\00:20:28.04 These gather dust and they also give off dust 00:20:28.05\00:20:32.05 and they give off some out gassing of various kinds 00:20:32.32\00:20:36.00 House plants cannot be kept dust-free. 00:20:36.03\00:20:39.43 And also, they cannot be prevented from 00:20:39.46\00:20:42.35 doing some out gassing. 00:20:42.36\00:20:43.77 And people can be VERY allergic to these... 00:20:43.78\00:20:47.18 ...so they should be avoided in the home. 00:20:47.21\00:20:49.55 Of course, there should be no pets inside the home. 00:20:49.58\00:20:52.93 That's for any person who has any kind of allergy... 00:20:52.94\00:20:56.14 especially a home that has children in it, 00:20:56.17\00:20:59.21 should not have pets. 00:20:59.24\00:21:00.81 Those children in the home, where there are pets, 00:21:00.84\00:21:03.50 are many times more likely to get allergies and 00:21:03.53\00:21:07.50 serious forms of asthma, than are children who live 00:21:07.71\00:21:11.52 in homes where there are no pets. 00:21:11.55\00:21:13.68 The dander that comes off from their hair, from their skin, 00:21:13.71\00:21:17.68 from their saliva and where they lick themselves, 00:21:17.86\00:21:21.12 and lick the child or lick the owner, 00:21:21.15\00:21:25.04 all of these have allergenic substances in them 00:21:25.07\00:21:29.04 to which the allergic person can react. 00:21:29.16\00:21:31.71 Then, of course, air-condition the home throughout... 00:21:31.74\00:21:35.71 if you are allergic to pollens and other known 00:21:36.11\00:21:40.11 allergenic substances from the outside. 00:21:40.12\00:21:42.67 And you should have, if you do not want or cannot have 00:21:42.70\00:21:46.67 an air-conditioner, you should at least have an air filter, 00:21:46.77\00:21:50.70 and bring through the air filter all the air that 00:21:50.73\00:21:54.33 comes into your home. 00:21:54.37\00:21:55.45 In this way, you can filter out most of the allergenic 00:21:55.48\00:21:59.14 substances that could come into your home, 00:21:59.17\00:22:02.28 and get into your nose through this filter. 00:22:02.31\00:22:05.35 Then, another thing is to keep the windows closed. 00:22:05.38\00:22:08.45 Now it goes against the grain a little bit for me to tell you 00:22:08.48\00:22:11.47 to keep the windows closed... 00:22:11.50\00:22:12.84 But even though I tell you that, 00:22:12.87\00:22:14.49 I also must tell you that you STILL need fresh air. 00:22:14.50\00:22:17.52 And so, close your windows so that the airborne 00:22:17.55\00:22:21.52 allergenic substances will not come in, but then 00:22:22.02\00:22:26.02 make certain that you do have plenty of air circulating 00:22:26.78\00:22:30.78 in every room of the house, 00:22:31.67\00:22:33.36 even though it may have to come through an air filter. 00:22:33.39\00:22:36.23 Now, you will also find that you need a schedule for 00:22:36.26\00:22:40.23 doing certain cleaning tasks in your home. 00:22:41.34\00:22:44.56 First thing is to learn that you must vacuum your entire home 00:22:44.59\00:22:48.56 once or twice a week, depending on how dusty 00:22:49.11\00:22:52.65 your home is likely to be and that will be determined by 00:22:52.68\00:22:55.93 the area where you live, and how much humidity you have 00:22:55.96\00:22:59.74 and how much dust is in the air. 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.48 And also, the kind of structure or structural materials 00:23:01.51\00:23:05.48 that your house is made from... 00:23:05.71\00:23:07.21 All these things will determine how many times a week 00:23:07.22\00:23:10.05 you need to vacuum... whether once or twice, 00:23:10.08\00:23:12.59 but by all means, once a week the entire house needs to be 00:23:12.62\00:23:16.59 vacuumed and all surfaces need to be dusted. 00:23:16.71\00:23:20.71 And you should have some very good equipment that will 00:23:21.26\00:23:23.82 help you to be able to reach out of the way places 00:23:23.83\00:23:26.99 like the tops of picture frames, mirrors and 00:23:27.02\00:23:30.99 things of this nature, so that you can keep the house dust free 00:23:31.02\00:23:34.73 Then the next thing is the laundry schedule. 00:23:34.76\00:23:37.45 Sheets and pillowcases should be laundered weekly 00:23:37.48\00:23:40.72 and all bedding should be laundered monthly. 00:23:40.75\00:23:43.59 Curtains need to be laundered quarterly... 00:23:43.62\00:23:46.87 and some people find that it's better 00:23:46.90\00:23:49.43 if they not have curtains at all. 00:23:49.47\00:23:50.99 But rather if they have just blinds on their windows 00:23:51.02\00:23:55.02 that they can dust once or twice a week and 00:23:55.92\00:23:59.54 keep the dust down in that way. 00:23:59.57\00:24:02.10 Now recognizing whether your allergies are airborne, 00:24:02.13\00:24:06.10 or whether they are food-induced can be somewhat 00:24:06.70\00:24:10.21 of a challenge... 00:24:10.24\00:24:11.40 And that is simply done by the elimination and challenged diet 00:24:11.43\00:24:15.40 which means that you eliminate a certain group of foods 00:24:15.75\00:24:18.96 recognized as being likely to cause an allergy 00:24:18.99\00:24:22.96 and then, if your symptoms go away, 00:24:23.39\00:24:25.59 you can say... "Well, whatever it is that's causing my allergy, 00:24:25.60\00:24:29.07 it's in that group of foods. " 00:24:29.10\00:24:30.88 Then, when you symptoms are clear, 00:24:30.91\00:24:33.48 start adding the foods back one at a time 00:24:33.51\00:24:36.38 every 5 to 7 days... 00:24:36.41\00:24:38.46 Then when your symptom returns, 00:24:38.49\00:24:40.93 you know that that last food that you introduced 00:24:40.96\00:24:44.40 back into your diet... that food is likely to be one that's 00:24:44.43\00:24:48.30 causing you to have a problem. 00:24:48.33\00:24:50.02 Now, so far as airborne allergenic substances are 00:24:50.05\00:24:53.48 concerned, these the same. 00:24:53.51\00:24:56.19 If you know that when certain weeds, or flowers or trees 00:24:56.22\00:25:01.54 bloom outside, that's the time you get your allergies, 00:25:02.08\00:25:05.62 then you can feel that that's the thing that's causing you 00:25:05.65\00:25:09.62 to have the allergy, and then you can try to avoid 00:25:09.74\00:25:13.74 that thing as much as possible. 00:25:13.85\00:25:15.40 Allergies are very common and very widespread in 00:25:15.43\00:25:19.40 our population today. 00:25:20.37\00:25:21.71 And now, Don Miller... another remedy for us? 00:25:21.74\00:25:24.74 Well, I want to sort of expand a little bit about this 00:25:24.77\00:25:28.11 keeping the house clean type of a thing. 00:25:28.14\00:25:30.32 Because there is one part of our house most people 00:25:30.35\00:25:34.07 NEVER clean... They do nothing about. 00:25:34.10\00:25:36.96 Now we are human beings... 00:25:36.99\00:25:39.23 and that means the way we cool our bodies is we sweat. 00:25:39.27\00:25:42.74 We're ALWAYS sweating. 00:25:42.78\00:25:43.84 We may not see the sweat because that's how we cool... 00:25:43.87\00:25:46.43 Moisture comes to the surface, it's evaporated... 00:25:46.46\00:25:50.10 This is a process that brings down the temperature of the skin 00:25:50.13\00:25:53.45 which keeps us cool. 00:25:53.48\00:25:54.79 So at nighttime, we go down in those nice, clean sheets 00:25:54.82\00:25:58.62 and we get a good night's rest 00:25:58.65\00:26:00.29 and we sweat all night and where does the sweat go? 00:26:00.32\00:26:03.18 Much of it goes right into the mattress. 00:26:03.21\00:26:06.07 And unless we've got a mattress cover on... which few people do, 00:26:06.10\00:26:09.14 it's IN the mattress... day after day, week after week, 00:26:09.17\00:26:13.14 month after month and some people... year after year. 00:26:13.25\00:26:16.85 You're laying on a sea of your sweat from years past. 00:26:16.88\00:26:20.85 And whereas it may not feel wet, and it probably is not... 00:26:21.37\00:26:24.97 that constant moisture is going to allow things to grow... 00:26:25.00\00:26:28.51 ...some mildews, some molds, some things in there... 00:26:28.54\00:26:31.64 that you do not want, and so here's what I recommend you do. 00:26:31.67\00:26:33.51 A couple of times, 2 or 3 or 4 times a year, 00:26:34.20\00:26:38.14 take your mattress for a walk. 00:26:38.17\00:26:40.27 Get it carried out of your house, carry it outside 00:26:40.30\00:26:42.83 and let it lay in the sunshine which is going to deep clean it 00:26:42.86\00:26:46.83 It's going to deep dry it. 00:26:47.68\00:26:49.08 And you're going to find, you're going to get some 00:26:49.11\00:26:51.16 better sleep from that very thing alone. 00:26:51.17\00:26:53.39 And you'll rarely, rarely see people doing this 00:26:53.42\00:26:56.08 but I recommend you take your mattress for a walk 00:26:56.11\00:26:58.48 this next sunny day... 00:26:58.51\00:27:00.61 Low humidity is the best... don't let it get rained on. 00:27:00.64\00:27:03.40 Let it get cleaned up... deep, deep inside 00:27:03.43\00:27:06.16 And, Dr. Thrash, I think that's one of the things 00:27:06.19\00:27:08.54 that's causing a lot of allergies out there. 00:27:08.57\00:27:10.28 Yes, and I'm glad you brought that up because I failed to 00:27:10.31\00:27:12.94 mention the fact that a mattress cover should be used 00:27:12.97\00:27:16.33 for every person who has known allergies 00:27:16.36\00:27:19.87 And, if you will use a mattress cover, then that will help you 00:27:19.90\00:27:24.60 to make a good laundry schedule for the mattress cover as well. 00:27:24.63\00:27:29.30 And about once every 3 months, 00:27:29.81\00:27:31.53 the mattress cover should be taken off and it should be 00:27:31.56\00:27:34.29 laundered nicely... 00:27:34.30\00:27:35.32 And you should be free from that source of having a problem. 00:27:35.35\00:27:40.34 Now you might say, why is it that we were made 00:27:40.37\00:27:43.96 so that we develop allergies? 00:27:43.99\00:27:47.17 Actually, it is a protective mechanism and we need to 00:27:47.20\00:27:50.92 thank our Heavenly Father that we have this protection. 00:27:50.96\00:27:54.65
