Don Miller 00:01:30.55\00:01:33.44 Thank you, Dr. Thrash. 00:01:33.47\00:01:34.70 You know, evolutionists figure that... Hmm... where did stress 00:01:34.71\00:01:38.98 come from... Why do we have stress? 00:01:39.01\00:01:40.27 Well, I know why we have it. 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.06 Back when they had to hunt those big, nasty monsters 00:01:42.09\00:01:44.91 and big dinosaurs and had to go out there and live by their 00:01:44.94\00:01:47.98 wits and by their muscles. 00:01:48.01\00:01:49.37 They had to have the special burst of different hormones 00:01:49.40\00:01:53.18 through their body to get them to survive. 00:01:53.21\00:01:55.15 And now it's just a vestige of evolution and 00:01:55.18\00:01:58.92 why we have it nowadays. 00:01:58.95\00:01:59.93 I don't agree with that... 00:01:59.96\00:02:01.24 I believe that stress and the hormones... 00:02:01.27\00:02:05.69 and all these things involved in the stress process 00:02:05.72\00:02:08.48 are again, like everything else, 00:02:08.51\00:02:10.19 a gift of God to be used in the right way. 00:02:10.22\00:02:12.60 Stress is a good thing... in the right situation. 00:02:12.63\00:02:16.74 The trick about stress is... how do you manage your stress? 00:02:16.77\00:02:20.82 Now let's just look at the stress situation, or the 00:02:20.85\00:02:23.08 stress mechanism. 00:02:23.11\00:02:25.55 What causes stress? 00:02:25.58\00:02:26.66 Well it can be something physical... 00:02:26.69\00:02:28.67 It can be something environmental... 00:02:28.70\00:02:30.72 It can be something chemical... 00:02:30.75\00:02:32.62 It can be a number of different things that causes 00:02:32.63\00:02:35.66 a stress response. 00:02:35.67\00:02:37.06 Basically, it's going to be something that you sense 00:02:37.09\00:02:39.88 9 times out of 10... 00:02:39.91\00:02:41.34 Some central input comes in... you see the Rottweiler... 00:02:41.37\00:02:45.07 you smell the smoke in your basement... 00:02:45.10\00:02:47.41 you see the flickering blue lights in the car behind you... 00:02:47.44\00:02:51.46 you see your boss coming down the hallway and you are 00:02:51.49\00:02:54.52 at the drinking fountain when you're not supposed to be. 00:02:54.55\00:02:56.67 Whatever it is, these things are stressors. 00:02:56.70\00:02:59.10 How are you going to deal? 00:02:59.13\00:03:00.79 But what happens when you get this input? 00:03:00.83\00:03:03.27 Well first of all, the cortex of the brain 00:03:03.30\00:03:05.98 receives the information, it processes it... 00:03:06.01\00:03:10.14 and it sends it to the amygdala 00:03:10.17\00:03:11.63 The amygdala again does some processing 00:03:11.66\00:03:14.36 and it sends along and activates the hypothalamus 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.49 and the hypothalamus says... Hmm... 00:03:17.52\00:03:19.53 It sends the message down to the adrenal medulla 00:03:19.56\00:03:23.87 and it says, "We need now some adrenalin. " 00:03:23.90\00:03:26.33 And so now... PFUUU! We've got some adrenalin in our system. 00:03:26.36\00:03:28.81 At the same time, the pituitary is sending a message down 00:03:29.54\00:03:33.31 to the adrenal cortex and it's sending out some other hormones. 00:03:33.34\00:03:37.02 Now what do these hormones do? 00:03:37.05\00:03:38.90 Well, the adrenalin is going to increase your heart rate... 00:03:38.93\00:03:44.47 And it's going to increase your glucose. 00:03:44.50\00:03:46.50 Now, the glucose goes up to give you more muscle strength. 00:03:46.53\00:03:49.88 The heart rate goes up to get that glucose... 00:03:49.91\00:03:52.38 that's now in the blood, all the way throughout the system. 00:03:52.41\00:03:55.08 The pituitary is sending its message down to the adrenals 00:03:55.11\00:04:00.04 to send out some hormones that are going to keep these things 00:04:00.07\00:04:03.33 up at the right levels, and at the same time, 00:04:03.36\00:04:05.96 increase your respiration, do some dilation of your 00:04:05.97\00:04:09.21 blood vessels... the dilation of your eyes, 00:04:09.24\00:04:12.25 your ears are more keen... 00:04:12.28\00:04:13.82 You stop digestion. You stop elimination. 00:04:13.85\00:04:17.30 Everything is ready for... perhaps we can use 00:04:17.33\00:04:20.24 the "fight or flight" mode of the body 00:04:20.27\00:04:23.77 which is a good thing in the right situation. 00:04:23.80\00:04:26.95 When the Rottweiler comes, you need to know 00:04:26.98\00:04:29.70 what to do in that situation. 00:04:29.73\00:04:32.28 Are you going to run? 00:04:32.31\00:04:33.28 Are you going to fight the thing? 00:04:33.29\00:04:34.67 But you need some special equipment... 00:04:34.70\00:04:36.67 and that's what it's given to us for. 00:04:36.70\00:04:38.44 The same type of stress can come to us though 00:04:38.45\00:04:42.63 when we're sitting in traffic 00:04:42.66\00:04:44.52 trying to get to the airport... 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.37 and we're almost late and the traffic stopped... 00:04:46.40\00:04:49.48 we're going to miss our flight. 00:04:49.51\00:04:50.56 Same type of stress. 00:04:50.59\00:04:51.94 Same hormones are pouring into the system. 00:04:51.97\00:04:54.58 Your heart rate has gone up, 00:04:54.61\00:04:55.93 you're a little bit flushed, 00:04:55.96\00:04:57.34 you're breathing a little bit heavier, 00:04:57.37\00:04:58.83 you're starting to worry. 00:04:58.86\00:04:59.94 Now what do you do? 00:04:59.97\00:05:01.20 If you do not take care of that stress... 00:05:01.23\00:05:03.43 People who get caught into this chronic stress situation 00:05:03.44\00:05:07.10 ...always stressed out and those are really the type A 00:05:07.13\00:05:10.30 type of people... they have some serious problems 00:05:10.33\00:05:13.41 with their health. 00:05:13.45\00:05:14.42 We need, at those times, to learn how to 00:05:14.43\00:05:17.23 release the stress. 00:05:17.26\00:05:18.68 There is one saying I want you to remember... 00:05:18.71\00:05:20.93 Remember this one... 00:05:20.96\00:05:21.93 "EXERCISE NEUTRALIZES STRESS." 00:05:21.94\00:05:25.20 When you are in a stressful situation, 00:05:25.23\00:05:27.23 somehow do some exercising. 00:05:27.26\00:05:30.17 If you are stuck in your car, in traffic, 00:05:30.20\00:05:33.09 stop and go... you can't even get out and walk around your car 00:05:33.12\00:05:35.36 Start doing some hand exercises, doing some isometric exercises 00:05:35.39\00:05:39.55 Even singing and yelling will help you release some of the 00:05:39.58\00:05:43.89 steam from your system... it's now getting overcooked 00:05:43.92\00:05:47.19 and you're getting into a sick situation. 00:05:47.22\00:05:49.71 We need to learn how to RELEASE the stress. 00:05:49.74\00:05:53.36 God has given us this ability to have the stressful situation 00:05:53.39\00:05:57.61 to meet stressful circumstances. 00:05:57.64\00:06:01.68 We use this stress response when we are getting ready 00:06:01.71\00:06:05.64 to do something very important... 00:06:05.67\00:06:07.33 a particular performance, an athletic event, 00:06:07.36\00:06:10.64 what ever it is, we need this extra burst of these hormones 00:06:10.67\00:06:16.04 and the sensitivity to our environment 00:06:16.07\00:06:18.85 to do our very best job. 00:06:18.88\00:06:20.74 And so, I'm thankful for the gift that God has given us 00:06:20.77\00:06:23.43 in the stress response... 00:06:23.46\00:06:27.11 But, again, it's how we deal with the stress, Dr. Thrash, 00:06:27.14\00:06:30.15 and most people don't deal with it very well. 00:06:30.18\00:06:33.12 That is quite true. 00:06:33.15\00:06:34.41 Now, when we are under stress, 00:06:34.44\00:06:37.73 our mucosal surfaces... in fact all of our epithelial 00:06:37.74\00:06:41.85 surfaces all through the body... 00:06:41.88\00:06:43.70 those on the skin, those in the gastrointestinal tract, 00:06:43.73\00:06:47.52 those in the sinuses and down through the lungs. 00:06:47.55\00:06:52.10 All of these are adversely affected by stress. 00:06:52.11\00:06:56.37 Therefore, when we are under special stress, 00:06:56.40\00:06:59.85 we can have some kind of affliction in those areas. 00:06:59.88\00:07:02.92 I remember one time, a young man we had a Uchee Pines, 00:07:02.93\00:07:07.08 who was one of our drivers. 00:07:07.11\00:07:08.53 He was a very sensitive young man but he was also 00:07:08.56\00:07:12.04 a young man who was a bit clumsy and often was 00:07:12.07\00:07:15.89 doing things wrong. 00:07:15.92\00:07:17.01 So one of his supervisors, one time, just made a list 00:07:17.04\00:07:20.21 of everything that he was doing wrong... 00:07:20.24\00:07:21.88 Simply wrote it down and there were 23 items on the list. 00:07:21.91\00:07:27.09 So, I knew that this was going on and I could hear 00:07:27.12\00:07:31.47 a very quiet young man, listening to this laundry list 00:07:31.50\00:07:37.23 of all of his failings. 00:07:37.26\00:07:38.70 The very next day this young man who had not been sick 00:07:38.73\00:07:42.31 in a long time, came down with a bad case of a cold. 00:07:42.34\00:07:45.87 Now that's just one instance... 00:07:45.90\00:07:48.21 That had to do with the reduction in the defense 00:07:48.24\00:07:51.61 mechanisms of the upper respiratory tract. 00:07:51.64\00:07:54.32 But also, in other mucosal surfaces, 00:07:54.35\00:07:57.74 we have a reduction in T cells... 00:07:57.77\00:08:00.89 a reduction in the defense mechanisms that 00:08:00.92\00:08:05.02 guard us and make a barrier against the entry of 00:08:05.05\00:08:10.11 various germs or foreign agents like pollens or 00:08:10.14\00:08:15.40 other allergens. 00:08:15.43\00:08:16.48 And so another of our workers at Uchee Pines, 00:08:16.51\00:08:20.94 a man who is in a very stressful job... he is one of our 00:08:20.95\00:08:25.55 maintenance engineers... 00:08:25.58\00:08:26.69 And this young man sometimes has a breakdown of his stomach 00:08:26.72\00:08:32.77 mucosa. 00:08:32.80\00:08:34.03 This epithelial surface that makes a barrier against 00:08:34.06\00:08:38.48 many things... 00:08:38.51\00:08:39.48 Of course when we swallow things, 00:08:39.49\00:08:40.76 right there at the entry, through the mucosa of the 00:08:40.79\00:08:47.00 stomach, that goes from the stomach into bloodstream... 00:08:47.03\00:08:50.28 right there, there are barriers that keep things out 00:08:50.31\00:08:54.90 and that's the important function of this mucosa... 00:08:54.93\00:08:58.25 ...is to keep things out. 00:08:58.28\00:08:59.59 We might think that the mucosal surfaces of the 00:08:59.62\00:09:04.45 gastrointestinal tract are just waiting to receive everything 00:09:04.48\00:09:07.33 But that isn't true, there are many things 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.84 that they keep out. 00:09:09.87\00:09:10.84 Or, they keep out MOST everything... 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.20 Such as too much iron. 00:09:13.23\00:09:15.55 But, let's take the man who is in the stressful position 00:09:15.58\00:09:19.65 at Uchee Pines, whose stomach fails under his stresses. 00:09:19.68\00:09:24.16 What happens with him is that because of the weakening 00:09:24.19\00:09:27.78 of the immune system in the stomach lining, 00:09:27.81\00:09:30.91 he gets an infection called, "H. pylori" 00:09:30.92\00:09:34.32 Now H. pylori, as some of you will know, 00:09:34.35\00:09:37.29 is a germ associated with peptic ulcers. 00:09:37.30\00:09:41.28 When I was in medical school, there was one thing that 00:09:41.31\00:09:43.67 we knew for certain and that is that peptic ulcers 00:09:43.70\00:09:47.04 were not caused by a germ. 00:09:47.07\00:09:48.74 The germs we found there, we just KNEW that they were 00:09:48.77\00:09:52.05 secondary invaders. 00:09:52.06\00:09:53.44 But now, 50 years later, we understand that... 00:09:53.47\00:09:56.70 Yes, a germ is one of the CAUSES, one of the known 00:09:56.73\00:10:01.00 causes of peptic ulcer. 00:10:01.03\00:10:02.73 And the reason that it attacks the stomach under stress, 00:10:02.76\00:10:05.86 is that there is a weakening of the defense mechanism 00:10:05.89\00:10:09.30 We always felt that because of the stress, 00:10:09.33\00:10:12.56 it made us over-produce hydrochloric acid and 00:10:12.59\00:10:17.71 pepsin and things of this nature... 00:10:17.74\00:10:19.22 so that we were more likely to gnaw the inside of our 00:10:19.25\00:10:23.70 stomach lining with these very powerful chemicals. 00:10:23.73\00:10:26.84 But now we know that it is a reduction in the immune system 00:10:26.87\00:10:30.41 functioning right at the barrier and that allows the 00:10:30.44\00:10:33.90 germ to penetrate and colonize the lining of the stomach. 00:10:33.93\00:10:40.07 Now there are things that we can do... 00:10:40.10\00:10:42.04 Of course, we can treat the stress... that is true... 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.19 and we should but ALSO, we can give the person a variety 00:10:44.20\00:10:49.66 of simple remedies that can be helpful in this stress-related 00:10:49.69\00:10:55.20 disease. 00:10:55.23\00:10:56.23 One of those is a tranquilizer... 00:10:56.26\00:10:58.60 and one of the tranquilizer herbs such as catnip 00:10:58.63\00:11:01.54 or skullcap... those are very good... 00:11:01.55\00:11:04.42 mint tea and chamomile... these are all mild sedative herbs 00:11:04.45\00:11:10.00 And will often, with the continued use of them, 00:11:10.03\00:11:13.24 be just sufficient to give the person a tranquil feeling 00:11:13.27\00:11:17.03 when they do a very stressful job. 00:11:17.06\00:11:19.87 Another thing is the antibacterial herbs. 00:11:19.90\00:11:23.28 There are a number of them... Garlic is a good one. 00:11:23.31\00:11:25.34 Grapefruit seed extract is an extremely good one. 00:11:25.35\00:11:28.33 And Echinacea and goldenseal, these are also very good ones. 00:11:28.36\00:11:33.45 You will find that Mastic gum is very good 00:11:33.48\00:11:36.92 for the H. pylori germ. 00:11:36.95\00:11:39.31 Many of these can be obtained from health food stores 00:11:39.34\00:11:42.11 with very little effort. 00:11:42.14\00:11:45.03 And we recommend that you do try to get them there. 00:11:45.06\00:11:48.33 Now other mucosal surfaces that can be affected when a person 00:11:48.36\00:11:53.86 is under stress, are all of those mucosal surfaces 00:11:53.89\00:11:57.56 in the genitourinary tract... the GU tract, 00:11:57.59\00:12:02.86 that would be vaginal surfaces, ureteral and urethral and 00:12:02.89\00:12:07.23 bladder surfaces... 00:12:07.26\00:12:08.23 All of these surfaces are also affected by stress. 00:12:08.26\00:12:11.40 And so, women are more prone to stress-related problems 00:12:11.43\00:12:17.71 than men are as a general rule. 00:12:17.74\00:12:19.51 And especially is that so in the bladder. 00:12:19.54\00:12:21.86 So cold feet, which the body perceives as a stress, 00:12:21.87\00:12:26.85 a stressor... the cold feet will cause a reduction 00:12:26.88\00:12:32.11 in blood flow and also a reduction in the protective 00:12:32.14\00:12:36.13 white blood cells that make a barrier against the penetration 00:12:36.14\00:12:40.80 of any kind of germ from the outside, and 00:12:40.83\00:12:43.92 because of that, a woman may come down with cystitis... 00:12:43.93\00:12:46.93 because of having cold feet or habitually cold feet. 00:12:46.96\00:12:51.41 Now viruses can also invade our premises easier when 00:12:51.44\00:12:57.33 we are under stress... such as cold stress. 00:12:57.36\00:13:00.70 And so, we mentioned about the young man who got a cold, 00:13:00.73\00:13:05.75 but don't forget that cancer is also caused by a virus. 00:13:05.78\00:13:09.83 The virus of breast cancer may be triggered, 00:13:09.86\00:13:14.97 or at least assisted in getting a toehold in the breast by 00:13:15.00\00:13:21.63 the chilling of the extremities. 00:13:21.64\00:13:24.57 We know that in habitually chilled women, 00:13:24.60\00:13:28.52 they tend to have more breast cancer, at least in cold 00:13:28.55\00:13:33.50 climates... there is more breast cancer than in warmer climates 00:13:33.53\00:13:37.00 where the extremities are not habitually chilled. 00:13:37.03\00:13:40.05 So, I hope that this little discussion about chilling 00:13:40.08\00:13:43.73 and about stress on the mucosal surfaces can be helpful 00:13:43.74\00:13:48.17 to you to know how to protect yourself in this instance from 00:13:48.20\00:13:52.52 these kinds of afflictions. 00:13:52.55\00:13:55.59 And now, Don Miller will have another aspect of stress 00:13:55.62\00:13:59.21 to talk with you about. 00:13:59.24\00:14:00.85 Okay, Dr. Thrash, I mentioned the term, "type A personalities" 00:14:00.88\00:14:05.67 I'm not into typing people. 00:14:05.70\00:14:07.66 I don't like all this phlegmatic and choleric 00:14:07.69\00:14:10.28 and all these things... 00:14:10.31\00:14:11.28 But we do have people who are a little bit more type A... 00:14:11.29\00:14:14.69 as you realize these are the driven type of people 00:14:14.72\00:14:16.82 ...the perfectionist type of people 00:14:16.85\00:14:18.28 ...everything has to be just so. 00:14:18.31\00:14:20.51 Then you've got the type B type of people that 00:14:20.54\00:14:22.56 are sort of laid back... let it flow, let it go... 00:14:22.59\00:14:25.22 Basically the type A type of a personality 00:14:25.25\00:14:28.67 is the type of a person who is a stress magnet. 00:14:28.70\00:14:32.58 They make their own stresses. 00:14:32.61\00:14:34.95 Now when I say, "make their own stresses," 00:14:34.98\00:14:36.98 again I have to stress.. that STRESSES are out there. 00:14:37.01\00:14:41.61 It's how we relate to... receive and process the stressor 00:14:41.64\00:14:48.16 I know that some people when they get... 00:14:48.19\00:14:50.43 I used to be type A type of a person... 00:14:50.46\00:14:53.45 Let me mention one situation I was in that I have tried 00:14:53.48\00:14:57.13 very much to get away from... 00:14:57.16\00:14:58.55 and I think the Lord has given me the great victory here 00:14:58.58\00:15:00.77 I had taken someone to the airport in Atlanta... 00:15:00.80\00:15:03.50 and I've always been a perfectionist... 00:15:03.51\00:15:06.03 On the way home from the airport, 00:15:06.06\00:15:07.77 and I had driven this road dozens and dozens of times 00:15:07.80\00:15:10.43 I've lived in Atlanta. 00:15:10.46\00:15:11.81 I've been at Uchee Pines for a number of years... 00:15:11.84\00:15:14.33 Instead of going down I-85, I took I-285 going north. 00:15:14.36\00:15:19.72 And I really flagellated myself! 00:15:19.73\00:15:22.90 I said, "Why did you do this stupid thing?" 00:15:22.93\00:15:25.15 You know... this type A thing... getting tense, 00:15:25.16\00:15:27.58 ...heart rate going up... breathing deeper... 00:15:27.59\00:15:30.00 I'm sure all kinds of stress things were going through 00:15:30.01\00:15:32.12 my body... 00:15:32.15\00:15:33.59 But then the thought came to me... 00:15:33.62\00:15:36.28 to ask the Lord... 00:15:36.31\00:15:37.83 "Lord, you know I know better than this... 00:15:37.86\00:15:40.94 There's a purpose for this just happening. 00:15:40.97\00:15:43.76 I want you to... Please... I know that some things 00:15:43.79\00:15:46.71 we won't understand until we get to heaven, 00:15:46.74\00:15:49.34 but maybe once in a while, let us find out down here 00:15:49.37\00:15:52.60 why we make these really BIG mistakes and they were needless" 00:15:52.63\00:15:57.12 And, as soon as I started talking to the Lord about this 00:15:57.86\00:16:00.76 thing, I didn't have anymore stress. 00:16:00.79\00:16:02.86 I got off the first exit, came back on the other side, 00:16:02.89\00:16:06.33 came down and as soon as I was getting back on I-85, 00:16:06.34\00:16:09.36 someone was letting out a hitchhiker 00:16:09.39\00:16:11.87 on the side of the road... 00:16:11.90\00:16:12.88 And the Lord told me... "That's why you did that. " 00:16:12.91\00:16:16.16 Well... Praise the Lord. 00:16:16.19\00:16:18.47 And so, I picked up the hitchhiker 00:16:18.50\00:16:20.67 and I realized for my next 1-1/2 hours, driving with 00:16:20.70\00:16:23.39 this young man, why the Lord had me do this. 00:16:23.42\00:16:25.70 And so when you get into a stressful situation, 00:16:25.73\00:16:28.81 the best way to deal with it is to ask the Lord... 00:16:28.84\00:16:31.82 "Why is this thing happening. " 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.26 What in my character needs developing? 00:16:34.29\00:16:36.17 What in my life needs changing? 00:16:36.20\00:16:37.88 What do I have to learn about ME to make me a better person? 00:16:37.91\00:16:41.33 And now I've learned, it doesn't matter to me... 00:16:41.36\00:16:44.79 I'll go to the airport, and they'll tell me... 00:16:44.82\00:16:47.34 another real quick... if I can Dr. Thrash... 00:16:47.37\00:16:50.76 I've got a quick situation... 00:16:50.79\00:16:52.34 I was in the airport in Munich a few years ago, 00:16:52.37\00:16:55.65 and they told me the plane was overbooked, I didn't have a seat 00:16:55.66\00:16:59.22 And, would I mind waiting... 00:16:59.25\00:17:00.93 And I said, "Well, I'd really like to go now, 00:17:00.96\00:17:03.36 I've been here for 5 weeks. 00:17:03.39\00:17:04.36 They said, "Well, we'll give you one of the last seats 00:17:04.39\00:17:06.45 but, if we need it, can we have it? 00:17:06.48\00:17:09.04 I said, "Sure, if you need it, you can have it. " 00:18:05.98\00:18:06.95 So I get my things and she walked out and into the 00:18:06.96\00:18:09.89 little in-between place... 00:18:09.92\00:18:11.94 When I finally got in there, she handed me my stub back. 00:18:11.97\00:18:14.27 She had crossed out 23-B and written 2-E. 00:18:14.30\00:18:18.77 You know where 2-E is? 00:18:18.80\00:18:21.66 I've WALKED through first class... 00:18:21.69\00:18:23.66 I was on a window, second row, first class... 00:18:23.69\00:18:27.22 for 11 hours from Munich to Atlanta. 00:18:27.25\00:18:29.55 Now if I'd gotten all stressed out too, 00:18:29.58\00:18:31.85 they probably would have gone ahead and given it 00:18:31.88\00:18:34.07 to the other guy but he made this stressor 00:18:34.10\00:18:37.30 his depressor. 00:18:37.33\00:18:38.80 It depressed him for the rest of the trip. 00:18:38.83\00:18:40.44 But if he knew... I was up there enjoying myself greatly. 00:18:40.47\00:18:44.01 So, how do you receive your stress? 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.82 Receive it sometimes as God's message that He says 00:18:46.85\00:18:50.81 "I'm getting ready to do something GOOD for you. " 00:18:50.84\00:18:52.98 Receive it correctly. 00:18:53.01\00:18:54.37 I look forward to these stressful situations. 00:18:54.40\00:18:57.14 Now I just want to sit back, type B... 00:18:57.17\00:18:59.59 If it goes bad, there's a reason for it. 00:18:59.62\00:19:02.41 And I know I've got lots of things left in my 00:19:02.44\00:19:04.22 character to be developed. 00:19:04.23\00:19:05.52 And if He needs to put me in a stressful situation, 00:19:05.55\00:19:07.67 "Lord, bring em on... just give me the grace to 00:19:07.70\00:19:11.85 not be creating them for myself but be dealing with them 00:19:11.88\00:19:15.94 with your grace. " 00:19:15.97\00:19:16.94 Dr. Thrash, that's the way I like to deal 00:19:16.95\00:19:18.54 with these stress things. 00:19:18.57\00:19:19.54 Ah yes... very good story. I appreciate that! 00:19:19.55\00:19:22.45 I once worked with a nurse in Louisville, Kentucky 00:19:22.48\00:19:25.61 who was a pediatric nurse and a very good one. 00:19:25.64\00:19:29.16 And one of the things that characterized her was 00:19:29.19\00:19:31.96 that she just fell in love with her little patients. 00:19:31.99\00:19:34.87 I remember one little fellow who had big blue eyes 00:19:34.90\00:19:38.67 and beautiful creamy skin... 00:19:38.70\00:19:42.39 and she just fell in love with him but he had leukemia. 00:19:42.42\00:19:46.02 So, we all knew that he was going to die. 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.98 And as his disease developed, she became more and more 00:19:48.01\00:19:52.49 concerned about him... 00:19:52.50\00:19:53.71 And finally when he died, he died in her arms 00:19:53.74\00:19:57.30 and she just almost fell to pieces. 00:19:57.33\00:20:01.27 The next day, she got a little infection of some kind 00:20:01.30\00:20:05.55 and within a week, she was in a full-blown infection 00:20:05.58\00:20:08.51 and continued to have that for over a month before 00:20:08.54\00:20:12.62 she could come back to work. 00:20:12.65\00:20:14.26 I had another associate, a psychiatric nurse... 00:20:14.27\00:20:18.40 She dealt with schizophrenic patients a lot 00:20:18.43\00:20:21.49 And she would private duty nurse some of the 00:20:21.52\00:20:23.36 schizophrenic patients. 00:20:23.39\00:20:24.45 And when they would really go sour in some way 00:20:24.48\00:20:28.84 and hallucinate or get very abusive toward her, 00:20:28.87\00:20:32.40 then she would come down with an infection. 00:20:32.43\00:20:35.66 And we find from studies that have been done 00:20:35.69\00:20:38.75 in many areas, that abusive situations or major losses 00:20:38.78\00:20:42.92 of some kind, can bring on an illness of some other kind. 00:20:42.95\00:20:46.82 Infectious illnesses are common but also a wide variety of other 00:20:46.83\00:20:51.66 illnesses... I mentioned the peptic ulcer. 00:20:51.69\00:20:53.85 There are also hernia situations and slip disk situations 00:20:53.88\00:20:58.52 and all sorts of skeletal problems that can occur 00:20:58.55\00:21:02.37 because of extreme stresses. 00:21:02.40\00:21:04.33 People meet stresses in different ways, 00:21:04.36\00:21:08.53 and, as Don Miller just told you, 00:21:08.56\00:21:10.41 if you learn to sort of roll with the stressor, 00:21:10.44\00:21:14.97 then you will find yourself to be much happier. 00:21:15.00\00:21:18.32 Learn to have a Christian attitude about your stresses. 00:21:18.35\00:21:21.74 One of the important stresses that occur in people's lives 00:21:21.77\00:21:25.00 is that of simple change. 00:21:25.03\00:21:26.74 Just as we heard about the seat change. 00:21:26.77\00:21:30.74 It's an annoyance always, when you had planned something 00:21:30.77\00:21:34.28 to go this way... 00:21:34.29\00:21:35.29 And all of a sudden you realize it is not going to go that way 00:21:35.32\00:21:38.40 ...there has been some interruption. 00:21:38.43\00:21:40.02 There has been some change of course. 00:21:40.05\00:21:42.10 And as you have these interruptions and 00:21:42.13\00:21:44.72 changes of course, 00:21:44.75\00:21:45.75 then you find that you're annoyed, or you can be annoyed. 00:21:45.78\00:21:52.62 But you need to have the very spirit of Christ 00:21:52.63\00:21:56.40 about the changes. 00:21:56.43\00:21:57.75 If you will read the life of Christ, 00:21:57.78\00:21:59.62 you will see that His life was a life of FORCED changes. 00:21:59.65\00:22:03.87 He would be speaking to His audience and 00:22:03.90\00:22:06.58 in would come the hecklers. 00:22:06.59\00:22:08.20 Or, up would come those who would glower over 00:22:08.21\00:22:11.77 their glasses, I suppose, at Him. 00:22:11.80\00:22:14.30 And yet, He steered a straight forward course, 00:22:14.33\00:22:17.51 or He received the interruptions with the grace that He has 00:22:17.54\00:22:21.82 taught us... that we may also have. 00:22:21.85\00:22:24.62 Now, as we think about the diseases that can come 00:22:24.65\00:22:27.68 to people because of their stressors, 00:22:27.71\00:22:30.42 we need to know that we cannot bear stresses 00:22:30.45\00:22:34.50 ourselves... we are not constructed by our 00:22:34.53\00:22:37.22 Divine Designer to bear stresses... 00:22:37.25\00:22:39.80 so we can put these stresses on Him... 00:22:39.83\00:22:42.56 "Father, I am Your child, this stressor is a 00:22:42.59\00:22:46.42 test for me. 00:22:46.45\00:22:47.78 I am not capable of bearing this stress alone. 00:22:47.81\00:22:51.16 And, therefore, I request that Your broad shoulders 00:22:51.19\00:22:56.05 carry this stress. " 00:22:56.08\00:22:57.17 And, I have never had it to fail me when I have had this 00:22:57.18\00:23:00.88 kind of stressor and this kind of relationship to it... 00:23:00.89\00:23:04.07 But that the Lord bore me over the stressor without any 00:23:04.10\00:23:08.62 difficulty at all. 00:23:08.65\00:23:10.05 He is capable of unraveling the most tangled situation. 00:23:10.08\00:23:14.62 And now, Don Miller is going to talk with you about 00:23:14.65\00:23:18.03 another aspect of stress. 00:23:18.06\00:23:19.60 Okay... I like to keep going back to situations in our 00:23:19.63\00:23:23.60 environment... situations in our lives that cause us 00:23:23.63\00:23:27.24 to thank the Lord for the stress response... 00:23:27.27\00:23:30.33 the response to a stressor. 00:23:30.36\00:23:32.87 I am the type that... 00:23:32.88\00:23:34.38 and this is a character flaw that I've got to still work on, 00:23:34.41\00:23:38.58 that if I'm driving somewhere, I'm going to get there, 00:23:38.61\00:23:42.13 I'm not going to stop... I'm going to keep on driving. 00:23:42.14\00:23:44.23 And sometimes, I have been driving along... 00:23:44.26\00:23:48.44 and got a little bit road-weary 00:23:48.45\00:23:50.41 and took one of those little micro-naps... 00:23:50.44\00:23:52.16 You've taken those yourself. 00:23:52.19\00:23:53.72 And it's one thing to wake up and you're still on the road... 00:23:53.75\00:23:55.87 But I remember one time, I was driving down the road, 00:23:55.88\00:23:58.37 and I had still a long way to go... I was by myself 00:23:58.40\00:24:00.93 late at night... I really was pushing. 00:24:00.96\00:24:03.26 And I had to get there... 00:24:03.27\00:24:04.71 and as I was driving down the road, I had one of those 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.74 little micro-naps and I ran off the road... 00:24:07.77\00:24:10.07 And I HIT something really rough on my tires 00:24:10.10\00:24:12.99 and it scared me SO bad, that was the stress response... 00:24:13.02\00:24:18.29 the feeling, the sight... all these things, 00:24:18.32\00:24:22.10 and I was wide awake the rest of the night. 00:24:22.13\00:24:24.95 I had no problem getting there. 00:24:24.98\00:24:26.55 And other situation... when I was in college. 00:24:26.58\00:24:29.71 I was driving from Georgetown, Kentucky to my college in 00:24:29.74\00:24:34.03 Campbellsville... late at night again 00:24:34.06\00:24:36.11 and I was tired and I got to this little town 00:24:36.14\00:24:39.04 and this time, I was going to stop. 00:24:39.07\00:24:42.03 And there was a filling station there... 00:24:42.06\00:24:43.60 this was outside of town, everything was closed. 00:24:43.63\00:24:45.93 And there was a road going this way and a road going this way... 00:24:45.96\00:24:48.88 and I pulled in and just stopped, put it in neutral, 00:24:48.91\00:24:52.74 and just put my head over the steering wheel... 00:24:52.77\00:24:55.09 sound asleep, instantly. 00:24:55.12\00:24:56.52 Car was still running, lights were on, 00:24:56.53\00:24:59.02 and I was basically lined up crossways on the road 00:24:59.05\00:25:02.35 before I got to the road, straight into a fence... 00:25:02.38\00:25:05.07 This is what I was looking at when I stopped. 00:25:05.10\00:25:07.98 I slept probably no more than a few moments because 00:25:08.01\00:25:11.47 micro-naps are very good for you... 00:25:11.48\00:25:13.48 But when I woke up, I had forgotten where I was, 00:25:13.51\00:25:17.56 anything about the situation, my car was running, 00:25:17.59\00:25:19.90 and all I could see was a FENCE in front of me. 00:25:19.93\00:25:22.85 It gave me that adrenal response. 00:25:22.86\00:25:27.39 It scared me SO BAD, 00:25:27.42\00:25:29.56 I couldn't sleep once I got back to college... an hour later. 00:25:29.59\00:25:32.71 That really got everything going in my body. 00:25:32.74\00:25:35.50 And so these are GOOD responses, 00:25:35.53\00:25:38.23 but then again, I've mentioned before and it bears 00:25:38.26\00:25:41.05 mentioning again... 00:25:41.08\00:25:42.05 When you are in that stressful situation that you cannot change 00:25:42.06\00:25:46.44 and it's a stressful situation brought on by 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.79 a deadline, brought on by your boss, 00:25:48.80\00:25:51.38 brought on by... whatever it is in your environment 00:25:51.41\00:25:54.03 that you cannot change and you can't run from it 00:25:54.06\00:25:56.97 ...somehow in your experience, 00:25:57.00\00:25:58.76 you have to release that stress. 00:25:58.79\00:26:03.14 And the best way is let your muscles use up that extra 00:26:03.17\00:26:08.33 glucose. 00:26:08.36\00:26:09.33 Let your muscles use up that extra heart rate. 00:26:09.36\00:26:12.67 Just by doing some exercises where you are, 00:26:12.70\00:26:15.26 if you can, just get up and walk around very quickly 00:26:15.29\00:26:17.76 Take some deep breaths and surrender the situation 00:26:17.79\00:26:21.85 to the Lord realizing that good will come out of this thing 00:26:21.88\00:26:24.81 It's amazing, these stress responses... 00:26:24.82\00:26:28.77 the adrenalin and all the stress hormones, 00:26:28.80\00:26:32.80 they only last a short time in your system... 00:26:32.83\00:26:35.72 in working the really peak activity. 00:26:35.75\00:26:38.56 Use them up as fast as possible. 00:26:38.59\00:26:40.88 As you are letting your mind get out of the stressful 00:26:40.91\00:26:44.29 situation and it will not do you the large harm that it WILL do 00:26:44.32\00:26:49.22 if you do not learn to deal with it correctly... Dr. Thrash. 00:26:49.25\00:26:52.26 There's another area that I would like to touch on 00:26:52.29\00:26:54.89 in dealing with stress and that's stress in babies. 00:26:54.92\00:26:58.46 I'm sure that we don't think about the fact that babies 00:26:58.49\00:27:01.18 can be under quite a lot of stress. 00:27:01.19\00:27:03.11 They are born into a foreign environment. 00:27:03.14\00:27:06.21 They are in the nursery with foreign hands and foreign voices 00:27:06.24\00:27:10.47 that they've never heard before. 00:27:10.50\00:27:12.01 And when they're with their parents, 00:27:12.04\00:27:14.02 whose voices they do recognize, 00:27:14.05\00:27:16.49 they are often with other people whom they don't recognize. 00:27:16.52\00:27:21.86 And then lights are flashing to take photographs and 00:27:21.89\00:27:24.94 all sorts of nurses are doing funny things to them that 00:27:24.97\00:27:29.14 they don't understand... 00:27:29.17\00:27:30.85 And babies can develop first class stress. 00:27:30.88\00:27:34.31 And when they're in the hospital is the time 00:27:34.34\00:27:36.66 when we need to protect our babies from the stresses 00:27:36.69\00:27:40.72 that can give them a bad start in life. 00:27:40.75\00:27:44.07 And so from infancy to old age, we need to be constantly 00:27:44.10\00:27:49.50 aware of the fact that God is trying to protect us 00:27:49.53\00:27:53.06 from the serious 00:27:53.09\00:27:54.18 stresses of life. 00:27:54.21\00:27:55.18
