The vast majority of illnesses fall in just a few categories 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.57 and can be treated by a very few remedies... 00:00:05.60\00:00:09.93 and most people can do those remedies very well 00:00:09.96\00:00:14.60 We'd like to talk with you about home remedies and simple 00:00:14.63\00:00:17.58 things that you can do for the vast majority of ailments. 00:00:17.59\00:00:20.46 I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician from 00:00:20.49\00:00:23.24 Uchee Pines Institute... 00:00:23.27\00:00:24.55 And for the next half an hour, we'll be talking about 00:00:24.58\00:00:27.35 home remedies. 00:00:27.38\00:00:28.35 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:48.60\00:00:50.84 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:50.87\00:00:54.10 and now, here's your host Dr. Thrash. 00:00:54.13\00:01:00.23 Sometimes when I tell people they should apply a home remedy, 00:01:00.26\00:01:04.30 they say, "Oh, I couldn't DO that. " 00:01:04.33\00:01:07.29 "I'm not a doctor, or I'm not a nurse and I don't know how. " 00:01:07.32\00:01:11.02 And generally, when I tell them that it's probably going 00:01:11.05\00:01:14.13 to be about as simple as making a cup of tea, 00:01:14.16\00:01:16.89 or boiling some water on the stove... 00:01:16.92\00:01:19.79 Then they think, "Well, it probably wouldn't do me any good 00:01:19.82\00:01:22.98 if it's that simple, and neither one of those 00:01:23.01\00:01:26.19 is really probably right on the mark. 00:01:26.23\00:01:29.13 What we need to know about home remedies is that 00:01:29.17\00:01:31.73 any well-equipped home can give you the equipment that 00:01:31.76\00:01:34.74 you need for doing the home remedies for the most part. 00:01:34.77\00:01:38.09 There are a few things that you need to have on hand. 00:01:38.12\00:01:41.39 And sometimes there are a few special routines that you may 00:01:41.42\00:01:46.61 need to learn, but all of these are simple. 00:01:46.64\00:01:49.49 Most of them can be explained on a telephone, 00:01:49.52\00:01:52.20 or can be read from a book, and you can follow them quite well. 00:01:52.23\00:01:55.65 A few illustrations in a home remedies book can often be 00:01:55.68\00:01:59.20 ALL that you need to make it so that you can follow 00:01:59.23\00:02:02.32 the remedy quite nicely. 00:02:02.35\00:02:03.78 Now, we'd like to start today with talking about allergies. 00:02:03.81\00:02:07.49 And since food allergies represent the great majority 00:02:07.52\00:02:11.78 of the allergies that we have, 00:02:11.81\00:02:13.49 we will start with a food allergy. 00:02:13.52\00:02:15.58 Now let me just explain the last statement that I made. 00:02:15.59\00:02:18.31 I said that food allergies make up the vast majority 00:02:18.34\00:02:22.39 of allergies. 00:02:22.42\00:02:23.39 Well, think of it this way... 00:02:23.40\00:02:24.47 You may say, "Well, I get sick in the spring and in the fall 00:02:24.50\00:02:27.74 when the pollens are in the air. 00:02:27.77\00:02:29.90 Well that may be... but during an entire pollen season, 00:02:29.93\00:02:33.25 you may be exposed to as much as maybe 1 teaspoonful 00:02:33.28\00:02:38.11 of something floating in the air, 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.03 but at every meal, you're exposed to cupfuls of food 00:02:40.06\00:02:44.44 and all of those things that go into the body are considered 00:02:44.48\00:02:47.70 by the body to be a foreign element, 00:02:47.73\00:02:50.45 and you can develop an allergy to it. 00:02:50.48\00:02:53.71 Without any question, that thing that gives us the greatest 00:02:53.74\00:02:57.99 amount of allergenic activity, is that of dairy products. 00:02:58.02\00:03:02.78 I supposed that's because many of us were exposed to dairy 00:03:02.81\00:03:06.25 products in infancy or childhood and 00:03:06.28\00:03:09.14 we developed allergies to these. 00:03:09.15\00:03:11.18 Now I have with me today, Don Miller, 00:03:11.21\00:03:14.27 who is from Uchee Pines Institute... 00:03:14.30\00:03:16.82 He is a lifestyle counselor there and in our 00:03:16.85\00:03:20.21 education department, and he will talk with you some 00:03:20.24\00:03:22.45 about dairy allergies. So you can start us off... 00:03:22.48\00:03:25.73 Okay... dairy allergies is the #1 allergen in the world. 00:03:25.76\00:03:29.92 And Dr. Thrash has already mentioned that the early 00:03:29.93\00:03:33.05 exposure to dairy milk will lead to allergies later on. 00:03:33.08\00:03:37.55 And, we find that children who were exposed as infants 00:03:37.58\00:03:41.26 to dairy milk, have a far greater likelihood 00:03:41.29\00:03:44.45 of developing asthma as they get older, 00:03:44.48\00:03:47.63 and things like eczema as they get older. 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.89 As a matter of fact, these things have become much more 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.91 prevalent in this society as years have gone on... 00:03:52.94\00:03:55.77 because of a few things that have happened in our society. 00:03:55.80\00:03:58.44 One, an infant's immune system is still developing, 00:03:58.47\00:04:02.75 and the best way to boost the immune system of an infant, 00:04:02.78\00:04:05.93 is by mother's milk, not cow's milk. 00:04:05.96\00:04:08.57 And children are being taken off the breast and onto the cow 00:04:08.60\00:04:13.04 and, therefore, their immune systems never really develop 00:04:13.07\00:04:15.94 as much as they should, and they're going to have dairy 00:04:15.97\00:04:18.91 allergies down through their lives. 00:04:18.94\00:04:20.87 We are the only species of animal that never really 00:04:20.90\00:04:24.62 weans itself. 00:04:24.65\00:04:25.99 We take dairy products throughout our lives... 00:04:26.02\00:04:28.62 And most people have a dairy allergy. 00:04:28.65\00:04:31.10 It is interesting, the late Dr. Frank Oski, 00:04:31.11\00:04:34.64 wrote a book called, "Don't Drink Your Milk" 00:04:34.67\00:04:37.32 and in the book, he said that he had never seen a child 00:04:37.35\00:04:41.04 with an ear infection or throat infection who had not 00:04:41.05\00:04:44.81 previously drank milk within the previous 5 days... 00:04:44.84\00:04:49.80 ...a very close connection. 00:04:49.83\00:04:51.84 A few years ago, we received a phone call at Uchee Pines 00:04:51.87\00:04:56.64 by Dr. Calvin Thrash... 00:04:56.65\00:04:58.42 And a woman was distraught down in Florida. 00:04:58.45\00:05:01.39 "My child... she's been having earaches, runny nose and 00:05:01.42\00:05:06.14 throat sores... all for a long time. 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.48 Took her to a pediatrician and they've got her scheduled 00:05:08.51\00:05:11.45 to have her tonsils taken out, and her adenoids taken out 00:05:11.48\00:05:15.55 and to have shunts put in her ears... 00:05:15.58\00:05:17.60 Ohhh... what should I do?" 00:05:17.63\00:05:19.10 And Dr. Calvin, the sage man that he was... 00:05:19.13\00:05:22.82 He says, "Ma'am, I'm not even going to ask you whether 00:05:22.86\00:05:27.25 your child is on dairy products because I know that she is. 00:05:27.29\00:05:30.24 Take her off of the dairy products. " 00:05:30.27\00:05:32.17 And then he also told her to give some goldenseal 00:05:32.20\00:05:35.25 and Echinacea, a few simple things. 00:05:35.28\00:05:37.46 Well, the mother did that and within a few days, 00:05:37.49\00:05:40.34 the child was completely cleared up. 00:05:40.35\00:05:42.25 Well, she took her child back to the pediatrician 00:05:42.28\00:05:44.70 and the pediatrician examined her and he said... 00:05:44.73\00:05:46.37 "Well, your daughter is doing fine. 00:05:46.40\00:05:48.66 The medications are working. " 00:05:48.69\00:05:49.88 And the mother says, "We didn't give her the medications, 00:05:49.89\00:05:52.72 we took her off of the dairy products. " 00:05:52.75\00:05:54.60 And the doctor says... "Yes, that would have worked too. " 00:05:54.63\00:05:58.87 Well, the mother was shocked that she would have taken 00:05:58.90\00:06:00.99 all these parts of her daughter's body out 00:06:01.02\00:06:03.95 rather than take away milk, and so she left... 00:06:03.98\00:06:06.22 And now they're medical missionaries in PNG, 00:06:06.25\00:06:11.12 and doing a wonderful work. 00:06:11.15\00:06:12.25 God knows how to take care of his children. 00:06:12.28\00:06:14.30 Now, milk allergies are very, very strong for people who 00:06:14.31\00:06:20.35 have that sensitivity. 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.39 I was staying with a family in England a couple of years ago 00:06:21.42\00:06:24.64 and the grandson had a severe dairy allergy. 00:06:24.67\00:06:28.81 And, any BIT of it and he would have these sinus inflammations 00:06:28.84\00:06:36.30 and all these allergic reactions. 00:06:36.33\00:06:38.80 Well, he had been off of dairy for a long time... 00:06:38.83\00:06:41.11 I had finally gotten him off the dairy and 00:06:41.14\00:06:42.34 one day he walked into the house... he was sniffing and 00:06:42.35\00:06:44.97 his eyes were a little bit puffy and he was 00:06:45.00\00:06:46.60 drinking a can of something. 00:06:46.63\00:06:47.71 I said, "Well, son, what are you drinking there?" 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.79 He said, "Oh, this is a smoothie. " 00:06:50.82\00:06:53.74 I said, "Oh, what's in the smoothie?" 00:06:53.77\00:06:55.93 Oh... just good stuff. 00:06:55.96\00:06:57.18 There are no dairy products in there. 00:06:57.21\00:06:58.34 And I said, "Well, let me see it anyway. " 00:06:58.37\00:06:59.75 So I looked at the can and I'm reading the ingredients 00:06:59.78\00:07:01.97 and about the 3rd ingredient was cream. 00:07:02.00\00:07:05.01 And I said, "Son, this has cream in it. " 00:07:05.04\00:07:08.07 He said, "Yeah but, that's okay isn't it?" 00:07:08.10\00:07:10.51 I said, "What do you think cream comes from?" 00:07:10.54\00:07:12.89 He said, "Well, it comes from the crop. " 00:07:12.92\00:07:14.48 I said, "What?" I mean, English accents I can't pick up. 00:07:14.51\00:07:18.13 I said, "It comes from where?" 00:07:18.16\00:07:19.57 He said, "From the crop. " 00:07:19.60\00:07:20.93 And he said, "Remember... cream of the crop. " 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.63 I said, "No Josh, "cream of the crop" is just a saying... 00:07:22.66\00:07:26.86 it comes from a cow. " 00:07:26.89\00:07:28.08 And so from that small ingredient in this can of stuff, 00:07:28.11\00:07:31.74 he had an allergic reaction. 00:07:31.75\00:07:33.11 We need to be away from the world's #1 food allergy... 00:07:33.14\00:07:36.07 or allergen which is dairy products... 00:07:36.10\00:07:38.53 and once we are, we're going to find we're going to be 00:07:38.56\00:07:41.48 far more cleared up in the nose and the head 00:07:41.51\00:07:43.31 and everywhere else, Dr. Thrash. 00:07:43.32\00:07:44.58 And you know, a lot of people are suffering from a 00:07:44.61\00:07:47.10 dairy allergy when they think it's something 00:07:47.11\00:07:48.81 altogether different. 00:07:48.84\00:07:49.83 They think they have a weak stomach, 00:07:49.87\00:07:51.46 or they think they have weak lungs, 00:07:51.49\00:07:53.43 or weak sinuses, and it's really only a dairy allergy. 00:07:53.46\00:07:57.89 Now what do you do if you already have an exposure to 00:07:57.92\00:08:00.68 to milk and you KNOW you're sensitive to it. 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.80 Well, there are several things that you can do... 00:08:02.83\00:08:04.74 You can, of course, take nettles tea. 00:08:04.75\00:08:07.43 You can take charcoal. 00:08:07.46\00:08:09.08 You can take some anti-inflammatory things... 00:08:09.11\00:08:11.60 Or you can do hydrotherapy. 00:08:11.63\00:08:13.22 Hydrotherapy is really quite good. 00:08:13.25\00:08:16.19 And I have with me today, Valerie Schreiber, 00:08:16.20\00:08:19.87 who is going to talk with you about some of the 00:08:19.90\00:08:23.21 things that she does when she has someone who 00:08:23.22\00:08:26.43 has an allergic reaction. 00:08:26.46\00:08:28.47 Valerie... What can you tell us? 00:08:28.50\00:08:31.57 What I'm going to show you how to do is a treatment that 00:08:31.60\00:08:33.86 you can actually do on yourself, 00:08:33.87\00:08:35.28 and, of course, you can do this very same thing to someone else 00:08:35.29\00:08:37.89 So I'm going to have Melissa lie up here as though 00:08:37.90\00:08:40.54 she were in the bed... 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.66 And the first thing that you want to do is to draw 00:08:42.69\00:08:45.32 the congestion away from the head because 00:08:45.35\00:08:48.09 here's where the sinuses are... 00:08:48.12\00:08:49.52 here's where all the pain is... 00:08:49.55\00:08:50.75 And many times, you have a bad headache and stuffed up nose 00:08:50.78\00:08:54.50 and your cheekbones hurt quite a bit. 00:08:54.53\00:08:57.18 So, you want to do that by placing their feet in some 00:08:57.21\00:09:01.35 nice hot water, tolerable. 00:09:01.38\00:09:04.17 And so what this does is, it begins to take the congestion 00:09:04.20\00:09:08.19 ...congestion simply means that there is pooled blood 00:09:08.22\00:09:11.71 in that area of the head, or congestion lymph fluids as well 00:09:11.72\00:09:16.94 And so you want to release that and it will pull it on down 00:09:16.97\00:09:20.09 to the feet. 00:09:20.12\00:09:21.19 And then the next thing you'd want to do is 00:09:21.22\00:09:23.77 get yourself just a regular, nice thick hand towel 00:09:23.80\00:09:27.00 and you can take this hand towel, wet it down real good 00:09:27.03\00:09:30.35 in water, wring it out, put it put it in a plastic bag 00:09:30.38\00:09:33.83 and microwave it if you have a microwave. 00:09:33.86\00:09:36.36 If you don't have a microwave, then just put it over a pot 00:09:36.39\00:09:40.02 and just boil it down into a pot till where it's real nice 00:09:40.05\00:09:42.63 and hot... or sometimes your own faucet hot water 00:09:42.66\00:09:45.33 is hot enough. 00:09:45.36\00:09:47.32 Then you can take this hot pack 00:09:47.35\00:09:51.43 and you can wrap it in another towel, 00:09:51.44\00:09:53.88 because you don't want it to burn your face, 00:09:53.91\00:09:55.96 and then just put it right over top of your head... 00:09:55.99\00:09:59.59 leave it so that your nose... you can breathe. 00:09:59.62\00:10:03.12 And when you're doing this for yourself, you'll probably 00:10:03.15\00:10:04.99 want to do this for... oh, 20 minutes to a half hour 00:10:05.02\00:10:08.71 and you can, if you have a heating pad... 00:10:08.74\00:10:10.77 You can lay a heating pad over this and it will keep it hot 00:10:10.80\00:10:13.52 for that long and you won't need to exchange it. 00:10:13.55\00:10:16.23 Most of the time, this will do the trick. 00:10:16.26\00:10:18.94 However, there's another treatment that you can do 00:10:18.97\00:10:21.97 that is equally as nice. 00:10:22.00\00:10:23.42 You can get yourself a bowl like this... 00:10:23.45\00:10:27.57 fill it with hot water and then have yourself 00:10:27.60\00:10:29.77 another bowl that you can finish with cold water 00:10:29.80\00:10:33.62 because usually we finish our treatments with cold. 00:10:33.65\00:10:35.49 However, sometimes in sinuses, they're very delicate 00:10:35.52\00:10:38.77 and they don't like anything cold. 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.39 So you can fill this with cold water, 00:10:40.42\00:10:42.47 and then you would just... and I'll stand side too 00:10:42.50\00:10:45.92 so you can see how to do this... 00:10:45.95\00:10:47.31 so that you can continue to breathe 00:10:47.34\00:10:48.70 You put your mouth over the edge of the bowl like so. 00:10:48.73\00:10:53.55 And then duck your head down into the bowl of water 00:10:53.58\00:10:58.37 ...just like this. 00:10:58.40\00:11:02.48 And you can hold it there for maybe up to 20 minutes. 00:11:02.51\00:11:05.88 And I tell you, it no sooner gets in the water, or this 00:11:05.91\00:11:09.09 pack no sooner gets on the head, 00:11:09.12\00:11:11.66 and you start to feel that WONDERFUL RELIEF... 00:11:11.69\00:11:15.56 especially when you have that headache 00:11:15.59\00:11:16.97 And pretty soon, the sinuses begin to drain back 00:11:17.00\00:11:19.77 in your throat and you can feel everything 00:11:19.80\00:11:21.31 starting to release. 00:11:21.32\00:11:23.23 Thank you, Dr. Agatha. 00:11:23.26\00:11:24.23 Oh, you're very welcome... 00:11:24.24\00:11:25.21 And I think the treatment for acute sinusitis 00:11:25.22\00:11:29.88 is one of the most welcome treatments that we have 00:11:29.91\00:11:32.94 because the person is aching from the lower part of the face 00:11:32.97\00:11:37.37 right on up to the top of the head. 00:11:37.40\00:11:39.09 And so we are always grateful that we have that. 00:11:39.12\00:11:42.46 I have found, also, that for sinus problems, 00:11:42.49\00:11:45.73 not only a hot foot bath, but also a foot RUB 00:11:45.76\00:11:49.24 can be very helpful. 00:11:49.27\00:11:50.64 Now another form of allergy... not every case of asthma 00:11:50.67\00:11:55.08 is caused by allergy but, for the most part, 00:11:55.11\00:11:57.80 asthma is an allergic reaction. 00:11:57.83\00:12:01.93 And, I'd like us to discuss some things about asthma. 00:12:01.96\00:12:06.33 The person who has asthma will often feel that 00:12:06.36\00:12:10.86 they're helpless against it. 00:12:10.89\00:12:12.42 They simply can't breathe. 00:12:12.45\00:12:13.78 And they get to thinking, "Well, for sure I'm going to 00:12:13.81\00:12:18.31 have a serious problem and I might die with this attack 00:12:18.34\00:12:22.28 of the asthma. " 00:12:22.31\00:12:23.28 But actually, there are a number of things that they can do 00:12:23.29\00:12:26.72 for themselves that can be quite helpful. 00:12:26.75\00:12:29.16 And one thing is simply to make a fist like this... 00:12:29.19\00:12:32.34 and leave a tiny, little hole right here where the 00:12:32.37\00:12:36.25 index finger makes a curl like this... 00:12:36.28\00:12:39.14 and then you just hold that up to the mouth 00:12:39.17\00:12:41.92 and blow and it's... 00:12:41.93\00:12:45.91 ...they blow their breath out through that tiny, little hole. 00:12:45.92\00:12:50.12 Now the pressure between the lips and the diaphragm 00:12:50.15\00:12:54.57 causes the lungs to sort of dilate in this way 00:12:54.58\00:12:58.87 and that dilation makes them able to breathe 00:12:58.90\00:13:01.87 better right away. 00:13:01.90\00:13:03.13 So the person who might be beginning to get a little 00:13:03.16\00:13:06.05 anxiety, or might begin to feel this helplessness and being 00:13:06.08\00:13:10.50 borne down a stream that they cannot stop... 00:13:10.53\00:13:12.79 They will often feel immediately that they are being helped 00:13:12.82\00:13:16.10 and that all is not lost to them. 00:13:16.13\00:13:19.38 Then, of course, there are some variety of other things that 00:13:19.41\00:13:23.07 they can do for asthma. 00:13:23.10\00:13:24.21 And my helpers, Don Miller and Valerie Schreiber 00:13:24.24\00:13:27.78 will talk with you about some of these things now.. Don Miller 00:13:27.81\00:13:31.07 Okay, the first thing, I just want to explain one thing 00:13:31.10\00:13:33.47 about asthma because it's really a bad actor 00:13:33.50\00:13:36.13 We have a thing called "intrinsic asthma" 00:13:36.16\00:13:39.33 and "extrinsic asthma"... sorry about that. 00:13:39.36\00:13:43.88 Intrinsic means... basically we don't know where the thing 00:13:43.91\00:13:46.80 is coming from. 00:13:46.83\00:13:47.80 We have no idea. 00:13:47.81\00:13:48.87 We have nothing that we can say eliminate this and we 00:13:48.90\00:13:51.67 won't have the asthma. 00:13:51.68\00:13:52.71 Now normally, we don't look close enough 00:13:52.74\00:13:55.22 because it usually is something still in our environment 00:13:55.25\00:13:58.29 but the intrinsic basically begins after the age of 30 00:13:58.32\00:14:01.61 is the most serious type of asthma, 00:14:01.64\00:14:03.62 and we just have to keep looking for the smoking gun. 00:14:03.65\00:14:07.45 Extrinsic means basically it's caused by something out there. 00:14:07.48\00:14:11.19 We've already mentioned the dairy allergy... 00:14:11.22\00:14:13.23 which is the #1 allergy that's going to cause your asthma. 00:14:13.26\00:14:16.10 It could be dust, mold, mildew. 00:14:16.13\00:14:17.98 It could be the perfume on your 1st grade teacher. 00:14:17.99\00:14:20.82 It could be something out there, it usually begins 00:14:20.85\00:14:23.63 in childhood... it goes from there, it's seasonal after that 00:14:23.66\00:14:27.49 It's episodic... it's because sometimes you get into the 00:14:27.52\00:14:30.86 situation and sometimes it can be brought on by 00:14:30.89\00:14:33.14 an emotional situation. 00:14:33.15\00:14:36.80 But intrinsic and extrinsic means basically 00:14:36.83\00:14:39.61 sometimes we know where it comes from 00:14:39.64\00:14:41.23 and sometimes we don't. 00:14:41.26\00:14:42.33 But when we DO know where it comes from, 00:14:42.36\00:14:44.27 eliminate those things and we might eliminate the asthma. 00:14:44.30\00:14:47.02 So that's what those two things are, Dr. Thrash. 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.39 That's very good... intrinsic and extrinsic are 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.93 the two commonest forms of asthma. 00:14:51.96\00:14:55.98 In fact, that encompasses almost all cases of asthma. 00:14:56.01\00:14:59.50 Now, there are a large variety of treatments for asthma 00:14:59.53\00:15:06.30 and Valerie Schreiber is going to talk with us about 00:15:06.33\00:15:09.39 another aspect of the treatment of asthma. 00:15:09.42\00:15:12.49 Well, we find at Uchee Pines that hydrotherapy is 00:15:12.52\00:15:15.49 probably one of the very best treatments besides restricting 00:15:15.52\00:15:18.77 the diet that we can do... 00:15:18.80\00:15:20.43 And so we do, on our patients, hot and cold on the chest 00:15:20.46\00:15:23.76 which we do with towels and compresses 00:15:23.79\00:15:27.07 But I'm going to show you one that we use in the evening 00:15:27.10\00:15:29.88 and can be used throughout the day as well... 00:15:29.89\00:15:32.69 and especially with children... 00:15:32.72\00:15:33.90 You know how, when nighttime comes on, 00:15:33.93\00:15:36.01 and one of the things that happens with the bronchi, 00:15:36.04\00:15:37.91 is they begin to constrict and they can have another attack 00:15:37.94\00:15:40.77 So we do a treatment that we do a compress on the chest 00:15:40.80\00:15:45.55 and I want to show moms at home... 00:15:45.58\00:15:47.50 This is a nice way to do it. 00:15:47.53\00:15:49.16 If you have everything already in a little bag, 00:15:49.19\00:15:52.35 like I have a ziplock bag, 00:15:52.38\00:15:53.84 And, if you notice on here, it will say... 00:15:53.87\00:15:55.79 "Heat compress for chest" and then it will even tell you 00:15:55.82\00:15:59.13 what it's for, colds and bronchi and asthma, flu and so forth. 00:15:59.16\00:16:02.94 And then I write at the bottom, it tells you exactly 00:16:02.97\00:16:05.16 what you're supposed to do. 00:16:05.19\00:16:06.23 So that when an emergency comes, you don't have to run 00:16:06.26\00:16:09.00 around the house looking for the book to figure out how to do it 00:16:09.01\00:16:11.79 You have your whole little compress all together 00:16:12.46\00:16:16.29 and you can just pull it out and your directions are 00:16:16.88\00:16:19.16 right there and you'll know exactly what to do. 00:16:19.19\00:16:21.12 So this is what we do. 00:16:21.15\00:16:22.95 And I teach moms how to do this all the time... 00:16:22.98\00:16:25.79 and they tell me how effective this is... 00:16:25.80\00:16:27.80 especially for their children. 00:16:27.83\00:16:29.78 First, you would you'd get one of the children's 00:16:29.81\00:16:32.82 T- shirts or dad's T-shirts if it's an adult, 00:16:32.85\00:16:35.68 and you would take this T- shirt and you'd 00:16:35.71\00:16:37.43 put it down in cold water, wring it out as tight as you can. 00:16:37.46\00:16:40.58 Now you want to work very quickly in this. 00:16:40.61\00:16:42.57 And you would go ahead and put this on your child 00:16:42.60\00:16:49.64 Then you would get yourself a garbage bag 00:16:49.67\00:16:53.85 and you just kind of cut out the neck hole 00:16:53.86\00:16:56.90 and the arm hole... 00:16:56.93\00:17:03.97 Now this compress is put 00:17:04.00\00:17:06.26 in cold water... there we go 00:17:06.29\00:17:07.26 And then, we go ahead and we put a turtleneck on 00:17:14.82\00:17:18.75 because we want to close off ALL air... we want to get that 00:17:18.78\00:17:26.12 over your head... 00:17:26.15\00:17:35.79 and what we do... we have like a turtleneck around here 00:17:35.82\00:17:38.60 and you notice the cuffs are tighter here... 00:17:38.63\00:17:40.23 and then we would take and cuff this inside of her under panties 00:17:40.24\00:17:44.13 and then I suggest, for moms, to go ahead and put another 00:17:44.16\00:17:46.94 sweater over top of this. 00:17:46.97\00:17:48.47 Now what happens is... because this is cold water, 00:17:48.50\00:17:51.22 is the T-shirt is in there, her body temperature will drop 00:17:51.23\00:17:54.25 down a little bit and then it will begin to heat up. 00:17:54.28\00:17:57.19 And it will heat up to maybe 100-101 00:17:57.22\00:18:00.70 And it will stay like that for several hours 00:18:00.73\00:18:02.99 And what that does is, it keeps the bronchi dilated 00:18:03.02\00:18:06.38 instead of restricting which happens many times at night. 00:18:06.41\00:18:09.99 And they get a lot of comfort from this... 00:18:10.02\00:18:11.90 And 9 times out of 10, they won't have an attack 00:18:11.93\00:18:14.19 This is very good for any kind of a bronchial congestion 00:18:14.22\00:18:16.93 type of thing. 00:18:16.94\00:18:19.51 Yes, so you can use it not only for asthma but for any 00:18:19.54\00:18:22.56 kind of bronchitis. 00:18:22.59\00:18:23.56 You can even use it for pneumonia 00:18:23.57\00:18:25.84 and pneumonia is something that may follow some of these 00:18:25.87\00:18:31.90 different types of chest afflictions. 00:18:31.93\00:18:34.79 Now, changing gear just a little bit... 00:18:34.82\00:18:37.84 Let's go to another aspect of home remedies 00:18:37.87\00:18:42.12 and that is in the area of nutrition with 00:18:42.15\00:18:47.51 the antioxidant teas. 00:18:47.54\00:18:49.82 You'll hear a lot today about green tea and black tea 00:18:49.85\00:18:53.18 being very high in antioxidants. 00:18:53.21\00:18:56.01 And it is true that they are. 00:18:56.04\00:18:58.03 But then the very highest source of protein 00:18:58.06\00:19:01.97 that we have in the plant kingdom I suppose is 00:19:02.00\00:19:05.09 probably tobacco leaves. 00:19:05.12\00:19:07.05 But tobacco leaves come with a lot of other things as well. 00:19:07.08\00:19:11.29 So, we want to know what we can do other than 00:19:11.32\00:19:15.50 the antioxidant teas. 00:19:15.53\00:19:17.49 And teas that can be used also for such things as 00:19:17.52\00:19:21.02 weight control... 00:19:21.05\00:19:22.02 We want to know what we can do for these kinds of things. 00:19:22.03\00:19:25.01 So, Valerie Schreiber has a number of things here 00:19:25.04\00:19:28.81 that I think will be self-explanatory when she 00:19:28.84\00:19:32.55 tells you what they are. Valerie. 00:19:32.58\00:19:34.74 Well to talk once again about antioxidants... 00:19:34.77\00:19:39.36 The two best families in the plant kingdom are the 00:19:39.39\00:19:43.72 foods that have high quantities of vitamin E 00:19:43.75\00:19:47.00 and high quantities of vitamin C. 00:19:47.03\00:19:49.06 Those are considered the highest in antioxidants 00:19:49.07\00:19:52.36 which we're hearing a lot about today... free radicals... 00:19:52.39\00:19:55.54 ...they will go and destroy the free radicals. 00:19:55.57\00:19:58.04 And so your vitamin C again are in your fruits 00:19:58.07\00:20:00.17 but they're also in your red peppers and your potatoes 00:20:00.20\00:20:03.19 and there are many vegetables that have it. 00:20:03.22\00:20:04.99 And your vitamin E... 00:20:05.02\00:20:06.67 those would be in your nuts and your seeds and your 00:20:06.70\00:20:10.37 whole grains... 00:20:10.40\00:20:11.38 And so, again, if you're eating a very good diet, rich in 00:20:11.41\00:20:15.88 phytochemicals which means plant-grown foods that 00:20:15.91\00:20:20.10 God has given us, you will have sufficient antioxidants 00:20:20.13\00:20:23.87 in your body and you won't need to run out and take 00:20:23.90\00:20:26.60 supplements... 00:20:26.63\00:20:27.73 Because your body will work much better with the food. 00:20:27.76\00:20:31.68 Dr. Agatha, would you want me to talk about weight... 00:20:31.71\00:20:33.96 Yes, why don't we go ahead and talk about weight. 00:20:33.99\00:20:36.57 Weight control and what you have that might be helpful 00:20:36.60\00:20:39.18 for people who are trying to win the battle with the bulge. 00:20:39.21\00:20:43.05 Well, what we have here also, with the teas... 00:20:43.08\00:20:47.33 and there are many flavorable teas out here... 00:20:47.36\00:20:51.44 We have one that's here called "Sunburst C" 00:20:51.47\00:20:53.59 ...that happens to be one of the teas that is high in 00:20:53.62\00:20:56.51 antioxidants but it's also very flavorable! 00:20:56.54\00:21:00.38 And here's a nice one that's a peppermint tea. 00:21:00.41\00:21:06.98 This is one of my favorites, "Wildberry Zinger. " 00:21:07.01\00:21:10.11 And these teas are quite delicious... 00:21:10.14\00:21:13.33 And what you can put in the teas is... you can go ahead 00:21:13.34\00:21:16.21 and add a little bit of Stevia as a sweetener. 00:21:16.24\00:21:18.95 Now this is not going to cure your weight problem, 00:21:18.96\00:21:22.42 but this is sort of like a support system for you when 00:21:22.45\00:21:25.53 you begin. 00:21:25.56\00:21:26.53 And the thing that will support you more after you get 00:21:26.54\00:21:30.12 going in your diet program, or weight loss program, 00:21:30.15\00:21:32.95 will be as those pounds come off. 00:21:32.98\00:21:34.85 That will kind of support you and really spur you on. 00:21:34.88\00:21:37.62 But in the beginning, when you've been used to 00:21:37.65\00:21:39.24 eating all day long and drinking sodas and those 00:21:39.25\00:21:42.51 types of things, we like you to go to some flavorful herb teas 00:21:42.54\00:21:47.61 and let me just show you this... 00:21:47.64\00:21:49.28 there are some dieter teas out there as well 00:21:49.29\00:21:52.15 because there are some herbs that play a role in helping to 00:21:52.18\00:21:56.56 possibly suppress your appetite and do various things to help 00:21:56.57\00:22:02.60 you with your weight loss and digestion... 00:22:02.61\00:22:04.77 and that type of a thing. 00:22:04.80\00:22:06.43 So, there are a number of those out there but 00:22:06.46\00:22:09.11 one other thing that I wanted to suggest to you 00:22:09.14\00:22:12.57 that are trying to lose weight, 00:22:12.60\00:22:14.33 is we have some nice imitation coffee, I guess you could say. 00:22:14.36\00:22:20.72 There's Pero and Roma and Cafix. 00:22:20.75\00:22:23.29 There's a number of them out there. 00:22:23.32\00:22:24.87 And, a cup is only 5 calories. 00:22:24.90\00:22:27.48 So when you're try to stop the evening meal 00:22:27.51\00:22:30.60 and that's what we highly suggest... for those that are 00:22:30.63\00:22:33.41 trying to lose weight, is to go on the 2-meal-a-day program... 00:22:33.44\00:22:36.40 nothing in-between... drink lots of water 00:22:36.43\00:22:42.44 About 10 or 15 minutes before your meal, drink a glass of 00:22:42.47\00:22:45.51 cold water that will help suppress you overeating 00:22:45.54\00:22:48.60 And then in the evening, in place of a meal... 00:22:48.61\00:22:51.00 now this is just to help you get over the hump, 00:22:51.03\00:22:53.31 ...is to make yourself a nice cup of Pero or Cafix 00:22:53.34\00:22:56.95 And you will find that will soothe this "wanting to eat" 00:22:56.96\00:23:00.68 in the evening. 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.26 And then eventually, you'll be able to drop that off 00:23:02.29\00:23:05.31 as you're losing weight and you'll be so pleased with 00:23:05.34\00:23:07.61 the weight coming off of you, 00:23:07.64\00:23:09.06 you won't even want to do some of these things anymore. 00:23:09.09\00:23:13.03 These are just crutches, they are not cures. 00:23:13.06\00:23:15.55 But, as we know about many things that are on the 00:23:15.56\00:23:21.39 healing edge of things... 00:23:21.42\00:23:23.47 that if we can get just a little help... 00:23:23.50\00:23:26.73 then the body will do its own thing 00:23:26.76\00:23:29.06 and we can get over that major affliction. 00:23:29.07\00:23:33.41 Another problem that people often have is 00:23:33.44\00:23:36.67 nausea and vomiting. 00:23:36.70\00:23:38.56 Now nausea and vomiting can usually be handled in the home 00:23:38.59\00:23:41.81 except in VERY small infants under the age of 00:23:41.84\00:23:44.84 6 months perhaps when a protracted case of nausea 00:23:44.87\00:23:48.92 and vomiting and especially if it also has diarrhea. 00:23:48.95\00:23:52.40 This may require professional help, 00:23:52.43\00:23:54.54 but the average case of just a little food poisoning 00:23:54.57\00:23:57.16 or a little bit of nausea in grandmother 00:23:57.19\00:24:01.46 who may have eaten something that didn't agree with her, 00:24:01.49\00:24:04.10 some of these things can be rather nicely handled 00:24:04.13\00:24:07.54 by just very simple things that we can do in the home. 00:24:07.57\00:24:11.73 Now, if a child has a problem with nausea and vomiting, 00:24:11.76\00:24:19.00 we can use a paste made of carob, 00:24:19.03\00:24:24.09 or we can use slurry made of charcoal. 00:24:24.12\00:24:28.05 And, so I've asked Valerie if she will show you a slurry 00:24:28.08\00:24:31.48 made of charcoal and just how you would make it up for a child 00:24:31.51\00:24:36.76 Well... here is our charcoal... 00:24:36.79\00:24:40.55 I notice you're taking that top off very carefully. 00:24:40.58\00:24:42.94 VERY carefully because charcoal is like powder... 00:24:42.97\00:24:47.00 It will FLY everywhere. 00:24:47.03\00:24:49.29 So you want to be very, very careful with charcoal. 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.52 You don't move swiftly at all with it... 00:24:52.55\00:24:55.12 You move very carefully and slow with it. 00:24:55.15\00:25:02.08 Now I tell you, charcoal is the most wonderful thing... 00:25:02.11\00:25:04.32 Don't go anywhere in the world without it. 00:25:04.35\00:25:06.40 Have it with you everywhere you go. 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.13 Especially if you go below the border... FOR SURE! 00:25:09.16\00:25:13.54 Or if you go overseas... anywhere. 00:25:13.57\00:25:15.53 Now charcoal does come in many forms... 00:25:15.56\00:25:18.24 You can get it in capsule and tablet form. 00:25:18.27\00:25:21.24 However though, I caution you in the tablet form, 00:25:21.27\00:25:23.74 look on the bottle... read... many times now, 00:25:23.77\00:25:26.51 they're starting to put sugar in it. 00:25:26.54\00:25:28.06 So, I would go to the capsule for traveling especially... 00:25:28.09\00:25:31.33 If you're flying or driving in the car, 00:25:31.36\00:25:32.70 you certainly don't want to open one of these up and mix it, 00:25:32.73\00:25:34.80 unless you stop the car and get out. 00:25:34.83\00:25:36.70 But in the airplane, you can't quite do that. 00:25:36.73\00:25:38.57 But this is a nice way to mix it... 00:25:38.58\00:25:40.91 and you would just get yourself a teaspoon and you could 00:25:40.94\00:25:44.42 heap it up about like this for a child, 00:25:44.45\00:25:46.50 I guess, just about like this and pour it in one of these 00:25:46.53\00:25:50.04 little jelly jars... 00:25:50.07\00:25:51.69 And you notice, I'm being REAL careful because this 00:25:51.72\00:25:54.15 stuff will fly like crazy. 00:25:54.18\00:25:55.75 So you have one of these jars that has one of those... 00:25:55.78\00:25:59.00 like canning lids and when you put it on there, 00:25:59.03\00:26:02.18 you just tighten it real good and then you can begin 00:26:02.21\00:26:04.78 to shake it like this. 00:26:04.81\00:26:06.30 This is an easy way to do it moms... for your children. 00:26:06.34\00:26:10.52 And, let me tell you a nice way to get children to drink this... 00:26:10.55\00:26:16.18 you know, because many times the children will look at this 00:26:16.21\00:26:18.35 and they will go "Yuck, I have to drink this. " 00:26:18.38\00:26:20.95 So I tell moms to put it in grape juice... 00:26:20.98\00:26:24.15 Give the children a straw and 9 times out of 10, 00:26:24.18\00:26:27.22 they won't even know that they've had charcoal. 00:26:27.25\00:26:29.32 And they'll just drink it on down because it will 00:26:29.35\00:26:31.20 taste like grape juice to them, 00:26:31.23\00:26:32.38 and very well hidden in grape juice for children. 00:26:32.41\00:26:34.64 So, now if it's babies and you want to give your baby 00:26:34.67\00:26:38.66 charcoal for whatever reason... 00:26:38.69\00:26:40.04 and I know we've done this for our jaundiced babies. 00:26:40.07\00:26:42.26 You can let this charcoal settle right down to the bottom 00:26:42.29\00:26:46.28 and then you can see through it, but it will still 00:26:46.31\00:26:49.34 be kind of smoky color. 00:26:49.37\00:26:51.72 And then, if you want, you can still strain it through 00:26:51.75\00:26:54.15 a paper towel or some gauze and put it in a bottle for the baby. 00:26:54.18\00:26:57.12 So, I encourage you, out there, moms... 00:26:57.79\00:27:00.36 Don't do anywhere without your charcoal. 00:27:00.39\00:27:02.49 Get yourself charcoal. 00:27:02.50\00:27:04.62 Very good, and I like charcoal also because when you have 00:27:04.65\00:27:09.42 made it, it's very good for a sore throat... 00:27:09.43\00:27:12.14 People who have a headache will often have a headache because 00:27:12.17\00:27:15.64 they have some kind of toxicity in the body 00:27:15.67\00:27:18.51 and just drinking down a charcoal slurry 00:27:18.54\00:27:22.06 will be very helpful. 00:27:22.09\00:27:23.25 And, as Valerie said... you can use both the mixed up 00:27:23.28\00:27:29.19 black part but you can let it settle and people who have 00:27:29.22\00:27:33.12 very sensitive stomachs, will not be able to take that 00:27:33.15\00:27:36.18 that's black, so they can just let it settle, 00:27:36.19\00:27:38.86 and take the fluid that's on the top and drink that down 00:27:38.89\00:27:43.14 and often that will give them a lot of benefit 00:27:43.17\00:27:45.80 just from that kind of thing. 00:27:45.83\00:27:48.20 So, we hope these very simple things will become 00:27:48.23\00:27:50.47 second nature to you 00:27:50.50\00:27:51.78 in your own home. 00:27:51.81\00:27:52.78
