Hello, I'm Agatha Thrash 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.27 a staff physician at Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:03.30\00:00:06.11 which is a medical missionary training institute 00:00:06.14\00:00:09.78 in Seale, Alabama. 00:00:09.81\00:00:12.42 We deal with women's problems a lot there 00:00:12.45\00:00:15.65 and some of the problems that women have are quite unique. 00:00:15.68\00:00:19.35 And one of my associates and I will be discussing 00:00:19.38\00:00:22.54 some of these problems in the next half an hour 00:00:22.55\00:00:25.50 and we hope you will join us. 00:00:25.51\00:00:26.51 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" 00:00:47.70\00:00:49.73 with Dr. Agatha Thrash of Uchee Pines Institute 00:00:49.74\00:00:53.09 and now, here's your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:53.12\00:00:57.68 I suppose most of women's problems actually involve 00:00:57.71\00:01:01.18 the entire family... 00:01:01.21\00:01:02.19 Because as anyone who knows who has ever lived with someone 00:01:02.22\00:01:06.53 who had premenstrual syndrome, 00:01:06.56\00:01:09.45 the unhappiness of the woman who is suffering from the 00:01:09.48\00:01:14.60 premenstrual syndrome actually spills over and involves almost 00:01:14.63\00:01:18.67 everyone in the family. 00:01:18.70\00:01:19.82 PMS or premenstrual syndrome does occur before 00:01:19.85\00:01:25.65 the menstrual period actually begins. 00:01:25.68\00:01:28.57 And some women have trouble with it a good bit of the month. 00:01:28.60\00:01:32.75 Not just at the premenstrual time, 00:01:32.78\00:01:35.04 but also in the period around the ovulation 00:01:35.07\00:01:39.36 or, for some women, they have very few days through the 00:01:39.39\00:01:42.89 entire month when they don't feel uncomfortable with it. 00:01:42.92\00:01:45.78 Some of the symptoms include irritability, fatigue, 00:01:45.81\00:01:51.83 just a sense of not feeling well 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.25 They may have nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite. 00:01:54.28\00:01:57.77 They may have a voracious appetite. 00:01:57.80\00:01:59.71 They may have specific enjoyment, or even cravings 00:01:59.74\00:02:03.76 for various foods or drinks. 00:02:03.79\00:02:05.86 And the problems that women have with PMS 00:02:05.89\00:02:10.53 can be quite pervasive and involve her entire life. 00:02:10.56\00:02:13.93 And, of course, those things that involve women can 00:02:13.96\00:02:18.09 involve the husband and the children and even the neighbors. 00:02:18.12\00:02:23.17 Because of the irritability that the woman feels, 00:02:23.20\00:02:26.35 sometimes she involves everyone around her 00:02:26.38\00:02:29.71 with that irritability. 00:02:29.74\00:02:31.89 Now I'd like to make this appeal to women who have PMS. 00:02:31.92\00:02:35.19 It may be that you do not feel well... 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.60 It may be that you feel like a witch... 00:02:37.63\00:02:40.33 But you do not need to make everybody around you feel 00:02:40.36\00:02:43.87 or know that you feel like a witch. 00:02:43.90\00:02:46.63 What you must do is to realize that other people have the right 00:02:46.66\00:02:51.38 to feel good and to be happy 00:02:51.41\00:02:54.08 and you have that great privilege of helping them 00:02:54.11\00:02:57.10 EVEN though you don't feel like it. 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.45 You still have that privilege of helping them to feel good... 00:02:59.48\00:03:03.19 And as women, to minister and to nurture is a part of the 00:03:03.22\00:03:07.54 thing that gives us the greatest satisfaction in life. 00:03:07.57\00:03:10.55 As so, we should recognize that this is a part of what we can do 00:03:10.58\00:03:15.57 even when we feel bad. 00:03:15.60\00:03:17.47 Now, if you feel bad with premenstrual syndrome, 00:03:17.50\00:03:21.00 there are several things that you can do. 00:03:21.03\00:03:23.32 In fact, I'd like to write on the board a list 00:03:23.35\00:03:26.82 of all those possible treatments that you can give to yourself 00:03:26.85\00:03:32.06 When we think about the fact that these treatments 00:03:32.07\00:03:35.75 are standard... they involve very simple things 00:03:35.76\00:03:41.36 We do not have to spend a lot of money to get these things 00:03:41.39\00:03:45.17 and we do not have to go to any large medical center 00:03:45.20\00:03:49.15 All we have to do is to enjoy those things that we have 00:03:49.18\00:03:53.67 in our own homes as good treatment areas. 00:03:53.70\00:03:56.66 Now let's notice this... 00:03:56.69\00:03:58.49 Well, I'll just make a list of everything that you can 00:03:58.52\00:04:02.03 draw upon to treat yourself. 00:04:02.04\00:04:04.54 Let's start off with hydrotherapy. 00:04:04.55\00:04:08.17 "Hydro," of course, means water and "therapy" means treatment. 00:04:08.20\00:04:14.18 So any kind of treatment that has to do with water, 00:04:14.21\00:04:17.63 that's what you're going to be dealing with 00:04:17.66\00:04:20.00 when you deal with hydrotherapy. 00:04:20.03\00:04:21.46 It may be steam. It may be ice. 00:04:21.49\00:04:23.59 It may be water. 00:04:23.62\00:04:24.59 It may be cold. It may be hot. 00:04:24.60\00:04:26.08 It may be tepid. 00:04:26.11\00:04:28.07 Whatever it may be, 00:04:28.10\00:04:29.08 you will find that water lends itself to a lot of different 00:04:29.11\00:04:33.59 kinds of treatments. 00:04:33.62\00:04:34.59 We'll be talking about those doubtless, and we want you 00:04:34.60\00:04:38.93 to recognize that as you treat yourself for PMS, 00:04:38.96\00:04:43.37 you have water treatments available and they are 00:04:43.40\00:04:46.22 quite effective. 00:04:46.25\00:04:47.25 Now the second thing that we have available is diet. 00:04:47.28\00:04:50.44 You might think... well, there isn't much in diet 00:04:50.47\00:04:52.90 that could help me with PMS but that isn't true... 00:04:52.93\00:04:55.38 There are many things in diet that can help you. 00:04:55.41\00:04:58.00 Then, of course, there is exercise. 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.58 Now, exercise for PMS can be vigorous, or it can be 00:05:00.59\00:05:07.44 quite mild and it can be specific... 00:05:07.47\00:05:11.59 It can be just one area involved in the exercise. 00:05:11.60\00:05:15.96 And then, of course, there is passive exercise... 00:05:15.97\00:05:18.88 which is massage. 00:05:18.89\00:05:20.83 Now we have always thought of massage as being 00:05:20.86\00:05:24.55 something that was just psychologically nice 00:05:24.58\00:05:27.12 But actually, massage is a treatment. 00:05:27.15\00:05:30.91 It changes the pH and the circulation to various tissues 00:05:30.94\00:05:37.64 and, of course, is quite a good treatment. 00:05:37.67\00:05:39.87 Then another treatment that we have is herbal remedies 00:05:39.90\00:05:45.57 Now you will notice that I have put herbal remedies 00:05:45.60\00:05:49.59 AFTER I've put all of these others. 00:05:49.62\00:05:51.86 Herbal remedies are good remedies and I like them. 00:05:51.89\00:05:55.16 BUT, herbal remedies should not be the FIRST thing 00:05:55.19\00:05:58.78 that you go for in any kind of treatment routine. 00:05:58.81\00:06:02.24 And then, here is another one that should not be the first... 00:06:02.27\00:06:05.16 and that is nutrient supplements 00:06:05.19\00:06:07.55 Nutrient supplements are such things as... 00:06:07.58\00:06:10.75 vitamins and minerals but do not go for that first either. 00:06:10.78\00:06:17.95 Always start with the other things first, 00:06:17.98\00:06:21.08 and then go to nutrient supplements. 00:06:21.11\00:06:23.56 And then, there are some special treatments 00:06:23.59\00:06:28.57 that we might think of... 00:06:28.60\00:06:29.73 Special treatments like charcoal and a variety of 00:06:29.76\00:06:34.83 things of this nature. 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.03 And then, there is also trust in Divine Power. 00:06:36.06\00:06:42.71 Now again, we might not think of trust as being a remedy 00:06:42.74\00:06:48.01 but it IS a remedy. 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.09 We have been given trust in Divine Power... 00:06:49.12\00:06:54.48 We've been given prayer as a remedy. 00:06:54.51\00:06:57.76 And we should, of course, be mindful of the fact 00:06:57.79\00:07:00.60 that there is a great power in all of these remedies, but 00:07:00.63\00:07:06.01 not to forget prayer. 00:07:06.04\00:07:08.20 Now I would like to start in talking with you about 00:07:08.23\00:07:12.28 the things having to do with the treatment of PMS 00:07:12.31\00:07:14.73 with diet. 00:07:14.76\00:07:15.73 I like to deal with diet because 00:07:15.74\00:07:18.19 it's something that everybody is doing every day. 00:07:18.22\00:07:20.73 So I have asked one of my associates, Valerie Schreiber, 00:07:20.74\00:07:24.30 to help me to present that matter to you 00:07:24.33\00:07:28.95 because she's about the best cook that I know. 00:07:28.98\00:07:31.41 And I think that as you see what she has prepared here, 00:07:31.44\00:07:34.49 you will agree with that too. 00:07:34.52\00:07:35.91 But before we get into that, 00:07:35.94\00:07:37.58 I'd like us to just consider some of the herbs 00:07:37.61\00:07:41.65 that are available. 00:07:41.68\00:07:42.69 And, she is going to talk with you about some of those. 00:07:42.70\00:07:45.49 Valerie, if you had a patient who came to Uchee Pines 00:07:45.52\00:07:48.41 what would you tell her that she could do? 00:07:48.44\00:07:50.80 How would you handle it. 00:07:50.83\00:07:51.80 Okay, some of the first things that I would probably 00:07:51.81\00:07:54.73 talk to them about besides diet... 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.68 and we know that diet is a major key in PMS. 00:07:56.71\00:07:59.56 We know that high estrogen levels in the body play a major 00:07:59.59\00:08:03.80 role in PMS in women's conditions. 00:08:03.83\00:08:08.19 And so, some of the things that I would talk to them about 00:08:08.22\00:08:11.87 would be herbs... 00:08:11.90\00:08:13.00 And there are various herbs today on the market 00:08:13.03\00:08:16.48 that you can go to your local health food store... 00:08:16.51\00:08:19.50 and that are made and designed especially for women 00:08:19.53\00:08:22.56 and the various conditions that they have... 00:08:22.59\00:08:24.99 Like, for instance, PMS. 00:08:25.00\00:08:26.80 One of the ones that the women love the most and they say 00:08:26.83\00:08:32.57 it's a miracle for them, is the "chaste tree" 00:08:32.60\00:08:37.01 or chaste tree berry herb that they use 00:08:37.04\00:08:40.89 and women are always saying, "Boy, that's just a miracle 00:08:40.92\00:08:43.40 when I use this herb" 00:08:43.43\00:08:44.45 And there is a nice formula that you can put together 00:08:44.48\00:08:46.98 ...there's skullcap, dandelion and chaste tree... seem to do 00:08:47.01\00:08:51.13 wonders for women during this PMS time. 00:08:51.16\00:08:55.56 However, also we know that phytoestrogens play a role 00:08:55.59\00:08:59.20 and you can buy phytoestrogens; 00:08:59.23\00:09:01.18 however, they are made from a soy product... 00:09:01.21\00:09:04.71 and so you can get it from just eating good soybean dishes 00:09:04.74\00:09:09.46 that you can have. 00:09:09.49\00:09:10.46 A few more things that I'd like to share with you 00:09:10.47\00:09:12.48 is they have discovered in some studies that excess estrogen 00:09:12.51\00:09:16.56 is known to increase the body's demand for B vitamins 00:09:16.59\00:09:20.04 and especially B6. 00:09:20.05\00:09:21.52 And B6 does play a role in relieving 00:09:21.55\00:09:25.46 extra fluid in your body as well 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.68 And so that could be a major reason why it helps them 00:09:27.71\00:09:31.42 through the PMS time because you bloat up and swell up 00:09:31.45\00:09:34.50 and you have the irritability which also B6 plays a role 00:09:34.53\00:09:38.25 in the mental processes and your emotions 00:09:38.26\00:09:41.77 And some of the foods, and I've told you this on another 00:09:41.80\00:09:45.40 show... is bananas... is real high in B6 00:09:45.41\00:09:48.75 and your beans and your nuts and naturally, 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.42 your soybean products are, you know, the Cadillac out there 00:09:51.45\00:09:54.81 walnuts, whole grains have B6... 00:09:54.84\00:09:57.21 So I would encourage you women to increase these types 00:09:57.24\00:10:01.06 of foods in your diet on a regular basis. 00:10:01.09\00:10:03.53 And, in case you have a really serious condition, 00:10:03.56\00:10:06.28 you might want to jump start yourself by taking some B6 00:10:06.29\00:10:10.19 and then incorporate the foods at the same time 00:10:10.22\00:10:13.56 and then eventually you won't need to do that. 00:10:13.59\00:10:15.48 Also, magnesium deficiencies have been shown to be 00:10:15.49\00:10:19.33 prevalent in women with PMS. 00:10:19.36\00:10:21.17 So you may need to take some magnesium salts that you 00:10:21.20\00:10:24.32 could get at your local health food store... 00:10:24.35\00:10:25.87 But I also encourage you, at the same time, 00:10:25.90\00:10:28.30 start to incorporate foods that are high in magnesium 00:10:28.33\00:10:31.22 and those would be... seeds, and the fruits that 00:10:31.25\00:10:34.58 have a lot of seeds in it... 00:10:34.61\00:10:35.74 like your berries, and okra is a vegetable that has 00:10:35.77\00:10:38.56 a lot of seeds in it. 00:10:38.59\00:10:39.83 Grains... 00:10:39.86\00:10:41.20 So if you incorporate, really God's program into your life, 00:10:41.23\00:10:46.41 you will find that ALL these PMS and problems that you 00:10:46.44\00:10:50.10 really have, will begin to disappear because 00:10:50.11\00:10:52.03 it's all in God's plant kingdom. 00:10:52.06\00:10:54.17 Foods that you may want to consider or take as a 00:10:54.20\00:10:59.27 supplement for a short time would be vitamin E. 00:10:59.30\00:11:01.64 They have shown that vitamin E decreases many of the symptoms 00:11:01.67\00:11:05.64 of PMS including headaches and depression, 00:11:05.65\00:11:08.86 and breast tenderness, as well as weight gain due to bloating. 00:11:08.89\00:11:12.46 So again, we're back to the plant kingdom... 00:11:12.49\00:11:15.76 Almost ALL of God's plant kingdom, 00:11:15.77\00:11:18.45 the foods that we're usually used to eating, 00:11:18.48\00:11:21.47 have vitamin E 00:11:21.50\00:11:23.07 ...although the grains have a higher level of vitamin E... 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.46 your grains, nuts and seeds. 00:11:26.49\00:11:27.85 And so, those are the things that are important for you to 00:11:27.88\00:11:34.12 use but I have another one that I'm especially impressed with... 00:11:34.15\00:11:38.94 and have had wonderful results, not only with my own self, 00:11:38.97\00:11:42.56 but with a number of women that I have helped... 00:11:42.57\00:11:46.05 And that is using the natural "Pro-Gest" creams. 00:11:46.08\00:11:50.59 Now, I know there are many that are on the market 00:11:50.62\00:11:54.12 and you can check with your local health food store 00:11:54.15\00:12:00.31 to find out which one is the very best to use, 00:12:00.34\00:12:04.04 and usually they have the very good ones. 00:12:04.07\00:12:06.09 Now I want to just read to you a little bit about them 00:12:06.12\00:12:09.12 from one of the companies that says, Natural Progesterone Cream 00:12:09.15\00:12:12.70 is a completely natural nutritional supplement 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.60 containing extract of a plant known as the wild Mexican yam. 00:12:15.63\00:12:19.94 Now, please don't get this confused with the sweet potato 00:12:19.97\00:12:22.52 yam because I've heard women that have said... 00:12:22.55\00:12:24.64 "Oh, I'll just eat lots more sweet potatoes"... 00:12:24.67\00:12:26.82 No... it doesn't come from that. 00:12:26.85\00:12:28.48 This plant makes a substance identical to progesterone 00:12:28.51\00:12:32.40 produced by the human body. 00:12:32.43\00:12:34.27 When applied topically, 00:12:34.30\00:12:36.35 it absorbs through the skin and is transported directly 00:12:36.36\00:12:39.57 to the receptor sites where it is needed. 00:12:39.58\00:12:41.70 Because this form of absorption bypasses the liver, 00:12:41.71\00:12:46.67 receptor sites receive the cream much more efficiently 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.55 than oral way of taking it, or suppositories. 00:12:50.58\00:12:54.39 Now, how would you use the natural progesterone cream? 00:12:54.40\00:12:57.94 Well, in your menstrual cycle, you would use it from 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.99 day 16 to days 24. 00:13:01.02\00:13:02.93 However, when you buy these creams, 00:13:02.96\00:13:05.70 they usually will have a nice brochure for you that will show 00:13:05.73\00:13:09.29 you how to do the cycling with your creams 00:13:09.30\00:13:12.35 but it's usually from day 16 to days 24 00:13:12.38\00:13:15.74 and you would put it on your very thin, fleshy parts of 00:13:15.75\00:13:20.07 your body. 00:13:20.10\00:13:21.07 And you don't want to use it but every 4 days in the same spot... 00:13:21.08\00:13:24.19 So, what I suggest that you do is, 00:13:24.22\00:13:26.28 you get a sequence going and the sequence would be 00:13:26.31\00:13:28.62 right here above your breasts, 00:13:28.65\00:13:30.59 underneath your arms in the fleshy, soft areas 00:13:30.62\00:13:34.75 ...then at your midriff, your tummy and then right between 00:13:34.78\00:13:38.30 your legs and if you need another spot, you can go down 00:13:38.31\00:13:40.59 a little closer to your knees, but on the inside. 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.49 And then if you have this sequence going, 00:13:43.50\00:13:45.84 when you finish at the very last spot, 00:13:45.87\00:13:48.59 then you can start up again, and work your way down. 00:13:48.60\00:13:51.21 And you keep doing this... 00:13:51.24\00:13:52.53 and that way you'll never get it in the same spot 00:13:52.56\00:13:54.63 more than 4 or 5 days apart, 00:13:54.66\00:13:57.26 and that's what is the very best to do. 00:13:57.29\00:13:59.97 Now for women that are concerned about the amounts of estrogen, 00:14:00.00\00:14:06.44 because that's one of the things that the natural Pro-Gest cream 00:14:06.47\00:14:10.18 does... is it helps to balance out your hormones because we 00:14:10.21\00:14:14.24 have seen in studies... that most of these women's problems 00:14:14.27\00:14:18.48 and PMS and bad menstrual cramps and so forth, 00:14:18.51\00:14:22.85 are coming from high levels of estrogen... 00:14:22.88\00:14:25.37 And Dr. Agatha is going to talk to us a minute about that 00:14:25.40\00:14:28.53 as far as diet goes. 00:14:28.56\00:14:30.10 BUT, for those that are interested, 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.25 there is a lab in Oregon called, "ZRT Labs" 00:14:32.28\00:14:35.30 and they do a saliva test... 00:14:35.31\00:14:40.35 and you can send to this lab and you can get this little vial 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.05 You just fill it with your saliva, send it back to them 00:14:44.08\00:14:46.88 and it's the most accurate way to test hormones. 00:14:46.91\00:14:50.12 And so I suggest for you women out there that may be 00:14:50.13\00:14:53.08 concerned about having high estrogen because it plays a role 00:14:53.11\00:14:56.13 in several female cancers as well... 00:14:56.16\00:14:59.06 that you may want to do this 00:14:59.09\00:15:00.47 and you can do this without a doctor's prescription, 00:15:00.50\00:15:03.08 and it is definitely a licensed, reputable lab that does this. 00:15:03.11\00:15:07.75 That sounds good... 00:15:07.78\00:15:08.80 and when you have a patient who you are suggesting 00:15:08.83\00:15:12.41 these things for... it's effective for them, is it? 00:15:12.45\00:15:15.31 Very effective... 00:15:15.34\00:15:16.50 And once they find out that they have an estrogen imbalance 00:15:16.53\00:15:20.17 in their natural progesterone, 00:15:20.20\00:15:21.70 they begin to use these creams 00:15:21.73\00:15:23.06 and I have seen marvelous things happen with women. 00:15:23.09\00:15:26.67 I have seen... let me just tell you about it... 00:15:26.70\00:15:28.35 I have seen one woman in particular who had 00:15:28.38\00:15:30.79 some of the most severest PMS I had ever seen... 00:15:30.82\00:15:34.71 and then she had the worst menstrual cramps I'd ever seen. 00:15:34.74\00:15:38.48 And she began to use this cream and she's normal... I mean... 00:15:38.51\00:15:42.58 I couldn't believe it... she was SO normal. 00:15:42.61\00:15:45.18 I'm glad to hear that about these... 00:15:45.19\00:15:47.03 I have not used these as much as you have... 00:15:47.06\00:15:50.70 So I'm happy to hear that they are effective. 00:15:50.71\00:15:52.82 I've seen them in health food stores and other places, 00:15:52.83\00:15:55.66 but I've not know that they were effective. 00:15:55.69\00:15:58.54 We should make a distinction between PMS and painful 00:15:58.57\00:16:03.36 menstruation. 00:16:03.39\00:16:04.48 Painful menstruation is a serious problem of women 00:16:04.51\00:16:08.33 but painful menstruation is not PMS. 00:16:08.36\00:16:11.82 It is a fact that a person with PMS may also have 00:16:11.85\00:16:15.35 painful menstruation. 00:16:15.38\00:16:16.64 But it isn't essential that the person with the PMS 00:16:16.67\00:16:22.46 have painful menstruation. 00:16:22.49\00:16:23.98 So let me just distinguish between these two for you. 00:16:24.01\00:16:26.89 With painful menstruation, 00:16:26.92\00:16:28.79 the pain usually comes on at least no more than 00:16:28.82\00:16:32.00 one day before the bleeding occurs. 00:16:32.03\00:16:35.97 And so as you recognize that the timing is also important 00:16:36.00\00:16:41.01 whereas, PMS will often come on a week or, at least several days 00:16:41.04\00:16:46.01 before the menstrual period and often 00:16:46.04\00:16:48.14 with the onset of the bleeding, the person no longer 00:16:48.17\00:16:52.56 has the irritability and the bloating and those other things 00:16:52.59\00:16:56.57 that we often associate with the PMS. 00:16:56.60\00:16:59.28 So as you consider the distinction between these two, 00:16:59.31\00:17:04.92 do not try to treat PMS in exactly the same way that 00:17:04.95\00:17:08.80 you do painful menstruation. 00:17:08.83\00:17:10.41 Now, since painful menstruation is so separate, 00:17:10.44\00:17:16.85 we will take that up as a separate topic... 00:17:16.88\00:17:20.47 But now to go to the diet things that you have 00:17:20.50\00:17:25.87 available to you... 00:17:25.90\00:17:27.13 I would like to ask Valerie to help you to understand 00:17:27.16\00:17:30.54 some of those things since a bit of that manipulating 00:17:30.57\00:17:36.13 of foods, while much of it is very simple 00:17:36.16\00:17:40.11 and very straight forward, 00:17:40.14\00:17:41.28 there are some things that it will help you if you see 00:17:41.31\00:17:44.79 somebody who has dealt with these problems in women 00:17:44.82\00:17:47.43 a good bit. 00:17:47.46\00:17:48.47 So, Valerie, as I look at these wonderful things here, 00:17:48.50\00:17:52.56 it just makes me sorry that it's not dinnertime right now. 00:17:52.59\00:17:55.40 Yeah... So what do you have? 00:17:55.43\00:17:57.60 Well, we know that phytoestrogens are so 00:17:57.63\00:18:01.10 important in women's diet... 00:18:01.11\00:18:02.97 And so, what I have developed here is... 00:18:03.00\00:18:05.53 I use soybeans or tofu... 00:18:05.56\00:18:08.08 Now would you just tell me what phytoestrogens are? 00:18:08.11\00:18:11.17 Maybe someone there does not know what "phyto" means 00:18:11.20\00:18:14.28 and I'd like to really tell you because... "It's plant" 00:18:14.31\00:18:16.47 Yes... it just means plant. 00:18:16.50\00:18:17.85 It just means "plant. " 00:18:17.88\00:18:18.90 Yeah... and being a botanist primarily, or I started out 00:18:18.93\00:18:24.00 in botany... In my experience with science I like to tell 00:18:24.03\00:18:28.73 people that "phyto" just means plant. 00:18:28.76\00:18:31.27 That's probably a better way to really tell you out there, 00:18:31.30\00:18:34.41 is that it is plant foods and so it's the important 00:18:34.44\00:18:40.18 estrogens that we can get from natural products... 00:18:40.21\00:18:42.87 Isn't that just wonderful to know that you can get 00:18:42.90\00:18:44.70 your natural hormones just from eating the foods that God 00:18:44.73\00:18:48.68 has provided for us. 00:18:48.71\00:18:49.94 The plant hormones are very similar to those that 00:18:49.97\00:18:53.83 are human hormones. yeah. 00:18:53.86\00:18:56.10 Okay, so what I'm going to show you here... 00:18:56.13\00:18:57.73 I try to make it as easy in the kitchen as I possibly can 00:18:57.76\00:19:00.83 because my time is limited and I know your time 00:19:00.86\00:19:03.57 is probably limited as well. 00:19:03.60\00:19:05.24 And so what I have done is, I have made a cheese, 00:19:05.27\00:19:09.01 but I usually start out and I take tofu... 00:19:09.04\00:19:13.56 and this is just a real simple one, mom, for you at home 00:19:13.59\00:19:16.80 that don't have a real lot of time, 00:19:16.83\00:19:19.10 there are various ways that you can use... oh.. Soy Supremes 00:19:19.13\00:19:22.39 and different soy flours but a REAL quick one... 00:19:22.42\00:19:24.95 is to just take tofu, and you can use the silken tofu, 00:19:24.98\00:19:27.79 and you can use this tofu... 00:19:27.82\00:19:29.28 Now there different kinds of tofu, I understand... 00:19:29.31\00:19:34.55 This is the silken? No, this isn't the silken, 00:19:34.58\00:19:37.19 this is the firm and it's just packaged a little different. 00:19:37.22\00:19:41.47 There are some that are packaged in little tubs with 00:19:41.50\00:19:43.41 water and then there's the silken one that's on 00:19:43.44\00:19:45.22 your regular shelves and that comes in soft and medium 00:19:45.25\00:19:48.34 and firm, I think, and extra firm... Yeah 00:19:48.35\00:19:52.38 And so, when I start out, many times I will use 00:19:52.41\00:19:56.12 the firm because I do a couple of things with it. 00:19:56.15\00:19:58.88 I blend it in my blender... 00:19:58.91\00:20:02.17 ...this is a quick one I'm going to show you. 00:20:02.20\00:20:03.83 You can buy Hidden Valley Ranch Dip Dressing and it really has 00:20:03.86\00:20:08.76 absolutely nothing in it but just parsley and garlic and salt 00:20:08.79\00:20:14.15 And so there are no other bad chemicals in it for you... 00:20:14.18\00:20:17.55 So it's a pretty good one to use for a real quick dressing 00:20:17.58\00:20:20.61 Now, I START out that way... 00:20:20.62\00:20:22.33 and when I get through, it has firmed up and now I have 00:20:22.34\00:20:26.76 sort of like a mayonnaise... and you can probably see here 00:20:26.79\00:20:30.30 the consistency is very much like mayonnaise. 00:20:30.33\00:20:33.22 And, so I'll leave that plain... 00:20:33.25\00:20:37.22 Then, I will dip out some more 00:20:37.25\00:20:40.39 and I will put a seasoning in this because I like to have a 00:20:40.42\00:20:43.20 spread for my bread... 00:20:43.23\00:20:44.63 And so I will then put in, many times, 00:20:44.66\00:20:48.16 I'll put dill in this one, or I might put basil in it 00:20:48.19\00:20:52.09 and right here, I have a little bit of paprika on it 00:20:52.12\00:20:54.35 And you could see right here, I will just spread this for you 00:20:54.38\00:20:57.95 It makes just a nice spread for your bread. 00:20:57.98\00:21:00.90 And so after I finish that, 00:21:00.93\00:21:04.38 I still have some left in my blender, 00:21:04.41\00:21:07.45 and now I have to add just a little bit more water to do it 00:21:07.48\00:21:11.60 because it's too thick for a salad dressing. 00:21:11.63\00:21:14.42 So, I will add the water to it and 00:21:14.45\00:21:20.51 I will just stir it up this way 00:21:20.54\00:21:22.56 Now, I might say to myself, "Hmm, I think I will put 00:21:22.59\00:21:27.78 a little bit of basil... I love basil dressing. 00:21:27.81\00:21:30.42 So I'll sprinkle a little bit of basil in it, 00:21:30.45\00:21:34.31 Smells good... 00:21:34.34\00:21:36.09 And I'll tell you, the smoke flavor just gives a real good 00:21:36.10\00:21:41.70 delicious flavor to the salad dressing. 00:21:41.73\00:21:43.40 So, I will just put just a little bit in.. 00:21:43.43\00:21:47.28 don't have to put very much. 00:21:47.31\00:21:51.07 And see... what's nice about doing this is the same batch 00:21:51.10\00:21:54.59 but you can have 3 different flavors... 00:21:54.62\00:21:56.52 ...one for your spread, one for your mayonnaise and 00:21:56.55\00:21:58.73 one for your dressing. 00:21:58.76\00:22:01.98 So now this is done, and you can make it... 00:22:02.01\00:22:04.51 you know, if you like a real thick dressing, 00:22:04.54\00:22:06.41 you can make it nice and thick. 00:22:06.44\00:22:08.21 I usually have just about this consistency... 00:22:08.24\00:22:12.19 ...just how you see it happening right here. 00:22:12.22\00:22:14.10 And so now, I have a wonderful dressing... 00:22:14.13\00:22:17.88 And what's so nice about it, is I've made 3 things 00:22:17.89\00:22:21.50 out of one of these. 00:22:21.53\00:22:23.07 Now, then I'll have... you know how you have your blender 00:22:23.10\00:22:27.08 and you look down in your blender and you say... 00:22:27.11\00:22:28.67 "Boy, all that good leftover stuff in there... I hate 00:22:28.70\00:22:32.18 to rinse it out with water and just throw it down the drain" 00:22:32.21\00:22:34.50 So, I don't do that. 00:22:34.51\00:22:35.81 What I do is... that's the day I make my cheese. 00:22:35.84\00:22:38.61 So then I take another package of tofu like this. 00:22:38.64\00:22:42.79 I put it in here and I go ahead and add the Emes gelatin 00:22:42.82\00:22:48.00 and various other seasonings that I want to make my cheese 00:22:48.01\00:22:51.83 and then I go ahead and make my cheese. 00:22:51.86\00:22:53.39 And then I feel like... well, I've used everything 00:22:53.42\00:22:57.70 I have no waste, I guess you could say, leftover... 00:22:57.73\00:23:00.89 Because I've got my spread, my mayonnaise, my salad dressing 00:23:00.92\00:23:04.45 and I have my cheese. 00:23:04.48\00:23:05.67 And right here in front of me, 00:23:05.70\00:23:07.67 you will see that I have a nice cheese 00:23:07.70\00:23:11.03 And this is a white cheese that I make and it is absolutely 00:23:11.06\00:23:14.74 scrumptious. 00:23:14.77\00:23:15.98 And I'm going to cut you a piece right now 00:23:16.01\00:23:18.27 and show you how nice and firm this turns out... 00:23:18.30\00:23:26.82 ...well, let me get it here... 00:23:26.85\00:23:32.79 You can see... It looks really firm. 00:23:32.82\00:23:34.74 You put it on a nice sandwich 00:23:34.77\00:23:37.55 and you can see just how nice and firm it is. 00:23:37.58\00:23:41.63 And I used just tofu to do everything that 00:23:41.66\00:23:45.70 you've seen here today. 00:23:45.73\00:23:47.77 Well, I'm amazed that so many things can be made 00:23:47.80\00:23:54.03 in one step... 00:23:54.06\00:23:55.03 You can make the mayonnaise, the dip or the spread, 00:23:55.04\00:23:57.40 and the salad dressing all in one step. 00:23:57.43\00:24:00.85 And that makes it so nice for mothers that are busy... 00:24:00.88\00:24:03.45 is to be able to do it all in one day and then it lasts you 00:24:03.48\00:24:06.10 for the rest of the week. 00:24:06.13\00:24:07.17 And I like that cheese... I'm sure you spent a good bit of 00:24:07.20\00:24:09.89 time on that one... developing that one just right. 00:24:09.92\00:24:12.92 And I like the garnishing, when you garnish it nicely... 00:24:12.95\00:24:15.84 that makes the family want to eat it... For sure. 00:24:15.87\00:24:18.65 Now, I hope that this gives you a bit of a handle on PMS 00:24:18.68\00:24:23.34 and helps you to know that you do not need to feel 00:24:23.37\00:24:26.56 hopeless and helpless against this disorder. 00:24:26.59\00:24:29.34 It is due to some kind of hormone imbalance... 00:24:29.37\00:24:33.17 But there are probably also some sensitivities, 00:24:33.20\00:24:36.61 perhaps food sensitivities, 00:24:36.62\00:24:38.10 or perhaps other kinds of sensitivities... 00:24:38.13\00:24:40.09 maybe pollution in the atmosphere 00:24:40.12\00:24:42.95 or whatever that may also be a part of the total syndrome 00:24:42.98\00:24:47.61 of PMS. 00:24:47.64\00:24:48.81 But we'd like to go into the matter of painful menstruation 00:24:48.84\00:24:53.20 for you now. 00:24:53.21\00:24:54.18 Painful menstruation is usually pain in the lower 00:24:54.19\00:24:58.51 abdomen but it may also include the back. 00:24:58.54\00:25:01.01 It may include the thighs or the legs, or it may be 00:25:01.02\00:25:05.37 the entire abdomen. 00:25:05.40\00:25:06.81 Some women have pain in many different places with painful 00:25:06.84\00:25:10.69 menstruation... 00:25:10.72\00:25:11.69 and it is all due to the same kind of thing. 00:25:11.70\00:25:14.04 It is sort of a cramping of the uterine muscle. 00:25:14.07\00:25:17.52 The uterine muscle is quite a firm and BIG muscle 00:25:17.55\00:25:21.92 and it is, of course, quite strong 00:25:21.95\00:25:23.54 And if it cramps long enough, or the blood vessels cramp 00:25:23.55\00:25:26.77 long enough, then of course, you're going to get pain. 00:25:26.80\00:25:30.37 Or if certain blood vessels dilate, 00:25:30.40\00:25:33.34 such as blood vessels like varicose veins. 00:25:33.37\00:25:36.55 If they dilate a lot, if they dilate long enough, 00:25:36.58\00:25:39.77 then you're going to be having pain with it. 00:25:39.80\00:25:42.65 Now, because this is due to cramping, 00:25:42.68\00:25:46.11 then there are some simple things that we can do 00:25:46.14\00:25:48.84 ...such things as massage, as heat, as the application of ice 00:25:48.87\00:25:53.68 and whatever these things may be that you decide on, 00:25:53.71\00:25:57.36 they are very useful and will be helpful. 00:25:57.39\00:26:01.47 In fact, one of the very simple things that a woman can do is 00:26:01.50\00:26:04.85 simply to drink hot water. 00:26:04.88\00:26:07.33 But certain hot herbal teas are also extremely nice 00:26:07.36\00:26:12.06 and you can take those as well. 00:26:12.09\00:26:13.46 Once upon a time, there was, I believe the name was 00:26:13.49\00:26:17.38 "Lydia Pinkham's Compound" and I remember in my youth 00:26:17.41\00:26:22.27 ...this was what every woman was using and it was very effective. 00:26:22.30\00:26:26.78 My parents sort of poo-poo'd the idea that there might be 00:26:26.81\00:26:31.91 anything wrong with... or any beneficial thing with 00:26:31.94\00:26:36.20 Lydia Pinkham's Compound because it also was sort of 00:26:36.23\00:26:40.75 used in jest a good bit. 00:26:40.78\00:26:42.36 But, there is no question but that Lydia Pinkham's Compound 00:26:42.39\00:26:46.58 was helpful. 00:26:46.61\00:26:47.58 Now also, the use of ice can be very helpful. 00:26:47.59\00:26:51.61 Ice can be applied to the lower abdomen, 00:26:51.64\00:26:54.68 or it can be applied to the back. 00:26:54.71\00:26:56.38 A hot bath can also be helpful. 00:26:56.41\00:26:59.67 A walk can sometimes be helpful. 00:26:59.70\00:27:03.54 We had one woman who worked with us at Uchee Pines one time 00:27:03.57\00:27:08.00 who could be expected to be absent from work 2 days 00:27:08.01\00:27:11.56 every month because of painful menstruation. 00:27:11.59\00:27:14.44 And she would be practically prostrate. 00:27:14.47\00:27:16.79 One time, she was away from Uchee Pines 00:27:16.82\00:27:19.81 and it was not possible for her to lie down 00:27:19.84\00:27:21.84 and so we said to her... 00:27:21.87\00:27:25.04 Why don't you try some other thing and that other thing 00:27:25.07\00:27:29.59 turned out to be charcoal. 00:27:29.60\00:27:31.09 She took a big dose of charcoal 00:27:31.12\00:27:32.66 and then shortly thereafter another big dose of charcoal 00:27:32.69\00:27:36.04 and 30 minutes after that... 00:27:36.07\00:27:38.17 another big dose of charcoal 00:27:38.18\00:27:40.45 and she was not in pain at all that month. 00:27:40.48\00:27:44.35 So we were all thanking the Lord for these very simple things 00:27:44.36\00:27:47.88 that can be SO effective in the treatment of something 00:27:47.91\00:27:51.52 that can be as disabling 00:27:51.55\00:27:52.90 as painful menstruation. 00:27:52.91\00:27:53.91
