a male lion 00:01:43.63\00:01:45.41 and a female lion... 00:01:45.44\00:01:46.90 ...somewhere off the road, 00:01:46.93\00:01:48.71 and it was very exciting 00:01:48.74\00:01:50.13 to see these 2 lions there. 00:01:50.16\00:01:52.98 But they were just sort of laying there 00:01:53.01\00:01:54.38 ...I want to see these 00:01:54.41\00:01:55.79 lions DO something. 00:01:55.82\00:01:56.79 And so I decided to 00:01:56.80\00:01:58.62 try to get them to DO something. 00:01:58.65\00:02:00.23 And so I, 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.50 rather foolishly 00:02:02.53\00:02:03.83 got out of the vehicle. 00:02:03.86\00:02:05.07 And, it's amazing 00:02:05.10\00:02:06.60 what stress does for the body... 00:02:06.63\00:02:08.15 how fast it make you move 00:02:08.83\00:02:10.21 because when the haunches 00:02:10.24\00:02:11.47 of that lion, the back haunches 00:02:11.50\00:02:12.95 came up off the ground... 00:02:12.98\00:02:14.34 I was in that car 00:02:14.37\00:02:15.49 so fast, 00:02:15.52\00:02:16.91 I couldn't believe it. 00:02:16.94\00:02:17.92 And see, God gave us 00:02:17.95\00:02:19.38 that reaction that when 00:02:19.41\00:02:20.49 something happens, 00:02:20.52\00:02:21.90 that we need that 00:02:21.93\00:02:23.74 fight or flight mode in our bodies, 00:02:23.77\00:02:25.90 we've got everything working 00:02:25.93\00:02:27.28 for that. 00:02:27.31\00:02:28.28 As a matter of fact, what it does 00:02:28.29\00:02:29.52 it raises the blood pressure, 00:02:29.55\00:02:31.69 it increases the pulse rate, 00:02:31.72\00:02:34.60 it constricts certain things, 00:02:34.63\00:02:36.31 your appetite shuts down, 00:02:36.34\00:02:38.35 your digestion shuts down, 00:02:38.38\00:02:40.17 your eliminatory process... 00:02:40.20\00:02:42.29 you can't eliminate... 00:02:42.32\00:02:43.29 all shuts down... 00:02:43.30\00:02:44.55 Because everything is ready 00:02:44.58\00:02:46.01 for that fight or flight situation. 00:02:46.04\00:02:48.09 Stress brings that on. 00:02:48.12\00:02:50.07 And that's a good thing 00:02:50.10\00:02:51.41 when you're walking down the road 00:02:51.44\00:02:52.70 and here comes a Rottweiler 00:02:52.73\00:02:54.49 or you get out of your car 00:02:54.52\00:02:55.90 and there's a lion. 00:02:55.93\00:02:57.00 But what happens 00:02:57.03\00:02:58.31 when you're driving to the airport 00:02:58.34\00:03:00.22 and... 00:03:00.25\00:03:01.22 the plane leaves in an hour 00:03:01.23\00:03:02.57 and you're going to be there... 00:03:02.60\00:03:03.92 it's only 15 minutes away but 00:03:03.95\00:03:05.10 then you come across 00:03:05.13\00:03:06.24 stalled traffic, 00:03:06.27\00:03:07.58 everything is backed up 00:03:07.61\00:03:09.21 for as far as you can see. 00:03:09.24\00:03:10.91 It's the same stress. 00:03:10.94\00:03:12.94 Because what stress is 00:03:12.97\00:03:15.00 is the internal reaction 00:03:15.03\00:03:16.75 to an external stressor. 00:03:16.78\00:03:18.31 And it's how you manage 00:03:18.34\00:03:20.01 that stress that has 00:03:20.04\00:03:21.51 everything to do 00:03:21.54\00:03:22.51 with how you're going to feel 00:03:22.52\00:03:23.98 and how it's going to affect your 00:03:24.01\00:03:25.31 blood pressure and your life 00:03:25.34\00:03:26.81 because basically 00:03:26.84\00:03:27.81 when people get into 00:03:27.83\00:03:29.06 those situations, 00:03:29.09\00:03:30.33 stuck in traffic, 00:03:30.36\00:03:31.65 or not going to make your appointment, 00:03:31.68\00:03:33.54 if you do not know how to 00:03:33.57\00:03:35.25 manage the stress... 00:03:35.28\00:03:36.76 ...we don't want to eliminate stress. 00:03:36.79\00:03:38.70 If we eliminated the ability 00:03:38.73\00:03:40.67 to react to a stressful 00:03:40.70\00:03:42.44 situation, 00:03:42.47\00:03:43.44 we would cut out 00:03:43.45\00:03:44.88 a large part... 00:03:44.91\00:03:46.44 an important part of our lives. 00:03:46.47\00:03:48.18 But how do we manage that stress? 00:03:48.21\00:03:50.76 So here you are... 00:03:50.79\00:03:52.13 you're in the vehicle, 00:03:52.16\00:03:53.13 you've got to get there... 00:03:53.14\00:03:54.18 if you don't get there, 00:03:54.21\00:03:55.23 you're going to miss the airplane flight. 00:03:55.26\00:03:56.74 So, how do you manage that? 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.09 There are a number of ways to manage it. 00:03:58.12\00:03:59.51 1. Sit there and say... 00:03:59.54\00:04:01.30 "Okay Lord, 00:04:01.33\00:04:02.77 I'm really going to be interested 00:04:02.80\00:04:04.11 and see how you work this thing out... 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.00 ...What flight I'm going to get, 00:04:06.03\00:04:07.85 who I'm going to sit next to... 00:04:07.88\00:04:09.03 ...Why? 00:04:09.06\00:04:10.87 Why Lord? 00:04:10.90\00:04:11.87 am I going to miss this flight? 00:04:11.88\00:04:13.23 Because He's in charge. 00:04:13.26\00:04:14.88 If we could just understand it. 00:04:14.91\00:04:16.45 He's in charge of all these circumstances. 00:04:16.48\00:04:18.90 Don't let yourself be a victim 00:04:18.93\00:04:21.27 of circumstances. 00:04:21.30\00:04:22.54 Another thing you can do... 00:04:22.57\00:04:23.90 ...car is stopped, 00:04:23.93\00:04:25.38 traffic stopped... 00:04:25.41\00:04:26.61 Turn off the car, 00:04:26.64\00:04:27.78 get out, walk around 00:04:27.81\00:04:28.85 your car a few times. 00:04:28.88\00:04:29.85 We are told that exercise 00:04:29.86\00:04:31.79 neutralizes stress. 00:04:31.82\00:04:33.56 So get out there, 00:04:33.59\00:04:34.56 and so some exercise. 00:04:34.57\00:04:35.75 If you can't get out, 00:04:35.78\00:04:37.10 just do some type of 00:04:37.13\00:04:38.58 ...now they teach you in the airplane, 00:04:38.61\00:04:40.14 some different exercises to do, 00:04:40.17\00:04:41.84 DO some type of exercises. 00:04:41.87\00:04:43.39 Do some isometrics... 00:04:43.42\00:04:44.94 push here and push there, 00:04:44.97\00:04:46.74 squeeze the steering wheel, 00:04:46.77\00:04:48.32 Do anything because as we 00:04:48.35\00:04:50.05 exert our physical 00:04:50.08\00:04:51.57 forces, 00:04:51.60\00:04:52.63 we lessen the stress on our body, 00:04:52.66\00:04:55.13 because as that stress builds up, 00:04:55.16\00:04:57.60 we are now releasing 00:04:57.63\00:04:59.20 catecholamine's, 00:04:59.23\00:05:00.37 different stress hormones in the body. 00:05:00.40\00:05:02.38 We've got to somehow let these 00:05:02.41\00:05:03.97 things perk off 00:05:04.00\00:05:05.18 by using them up through 00:05:05.21\00:05:06.65 the exertion of our muscles 00:05:06.68\00:05:08.48 in our bodies. 00:05:08.51\00:05:09.48 And so when we get into a stressful 00:05:09.49\00:05:10.58 situation, 00:05:10.61\00:05:11.79 let's not eliminate the stress 00:05:11.82\00:05:13.50 because quite frankly, 00:05:13.53\00:05:14.63 the crying child 00:05:14.66\00:05:16.44 can give you the stress, 00:05:16.47\00:05:18.24 the spouse sometimes might give you stress. 00:05:18.27\00:05:20.16 You can't eliminate these things. 00:05:20.19\00:05:21.58 What we have to do is learn 00:05:21.61\00:05:22.85 how to deal with them. 00:05:22.88\00:05:23.96 And as we allow 00:05:23.99\00:05:25.78 God to be the 00:05:25.81\00:05:27.97 One in charge of our lives saying... 00:05:28.00\00:05:29.39 "Okay, it doesn't matter anymore. 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.33 God is in charge. " 00:05:31.36\00:05:32.72 And we have to also make sure 00:05:32.75\00:05:34.42 we're not putting ourselves foolishly 00:05:34.45\00:05:36.04 into a stressful situation. 00:05:36.07\00:05:38.70 The plane leaves in 2 hours, 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.41 and we haven't started packing yet. 00:05:40.44\00:05:41.91 Now that's the way I do things... 00:05:41.94\00:05:43.48 but that's not good. 00:05:43.51\00:05:44.53 It gives me stress I don't need. 00:05:44.56\00:05:46.14 We need to be packed ahead of time, 00:05:46.17\00:05:47.50 leave in plenty of time. 00:05:48.25\00:05:49.44 If you have done your part, 00:05:49.47\00:05:51.35 if stress comes, 00:05:51.38\00:05:53.56 and we learn how to manage it, 00:05:53.59\00:05:55.31 God will do His part. 00:05:55.34\00:05:56.74 And so, 00:05:56.77\00:05:58.08 stress... 00:05:58.11\00:05:59.26 it's a blessing of God, 00:05:59.29\00:06:00.82 it's a blessing to the body 00:06:00.85\00:06:02.76 and when we need it. 00:06:02.79\00:06:04.31 But if we don't handle it right... 00:06:04.34\00:06:05.68 If we don't manage it right through the 00:06:06.10\00:06:07.92 exercising 00:06:07.95\00:06:10.06 or completely surrendering 00:06:10.09\00:06:13.36 the stressful situation to God, 00:06:13.39\00:06:14.90 is going to cause some real 00:06:14.93\00:06:16.55 problems and that blood pressure 00:06:16.58\00:06:17.89 is going to rise, 00:06:17.92\00:06:18.89 rise, rise... 00:06:18.90\00:06:20.37 ...perhaps sometimes to the breaking point. 00:06:20.40\00:06:23.86 And that's not what we want to happen. 00:06:23.89\00:06:25.12 So we need to learn how to 00:06:25.15\00:06:26.40 let God 00:06:26.43\00:06:27.40 shoulder those burdens 00:06:27.41\00:06:28.68 and those appointments, Dr. Thrash. 00:06:28.71\00:06:30.51 Yes, very good counsel 00:06:30.54\00:06:31.65 about stress. 00:06:31.68\00:06:32.65 And I hope that 00:06:32.66\00:06:33.69 some of these things will be very helpful to you. 00:06:33.72\00:06:35.14 Also, 00:06:35.89\00:06:36.88 in the management of 00:06:36.91\00:06:38.56 blood pressure, there are 00:06:38.59\00:06:39.81 certain nutrients. 00:06:39.84\00:06:41.05 And I have a 00:06:41.08\00:06:42.41 graphic that I'd like to show you 00:06:42.44\00:06:43.88 about the nutrients 00:06:43.91\00:06:45.20 that are involved in 00:06:45.23\00:06:46.58 controlling the blood pressure. 00:06:46.61\00:06:48.76 Notice first, "magnesium. " 00:06:48.79\00:06:50.87 Magnesium has a relaxing 00:06:50.90\00:06:52.75 effect on blood vessels, 00:06:52.78\00:06:54.79 and that makes the magnesium 00:06:54.82\00:06:56.50 so that just taking the 00:06:56.53\00:06:58.28 magnesium alone 00:06:58.31\00:06:59.88 can be very helpful. 00:06:59.91\00:07:01.14 Magnesium in the form of 00:07:01.17\00:07:02.49 Epsom salts is the cheapest form 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.27 that you can get it 00:07:04.30\00:07:05.62 but it doesn't taste good, 00:07:05.65\00:07:06.99 so many people like to take 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.31 it as capsules. 00:07:08.34\00:07:09.31 Then we have "potassium. " 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.75 Potassium is also 00:07:11.78\00:07:13.50 very helpful in the control of 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.27 blood pressure. 00:07:15.30\00:07:16.34 Usually, we depend on 00:07:16.37\00:07:17.98 foods for potassium. 00:07:18.01\00:07:19.86 Sometimes 00:07:19.89\00:07:21.04 some people do take a 00:07:21.07\00:07:22.58 supplement of potassium 00:07:22.61\00:07:24.36 but generally it's 00:07:24.39\00:07:25.72 high potassium foods 00:07:25.75\00:07:27.21 that we want to 00:07:27.24\00:07:28.21 depend on for potassium 00:07:28.22\00:07:29.81 because a little bit of 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.19 excess of potassium, 00:07:31.22\00:07:32.45 can result in some 00:07:32.48\00:07:33.78 rather serious 00:07:33.81\00:07:35.19 malfunctionings of the heart. 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.49 Then another one is 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.23 "Coenzyme Q-10" 00:07:39.26\00:07:41.28 CoQ-10 is known 00:07:41.31\00:07:42.87 as a specific nutrient 00:07:42.90\00:07:44.67 for the heart. 00:07:44.70\00:07:45.67 It also has some 00:07:45.68\00:07:47.57 very good 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.55 hyPOtensive effects 00:07:49.58\00:07:52.08 on the blood pressure. 00:07:52.11\00:07:53.62 So we like to use it 00:07:53.65\00:07:55.00 for the blood pressure. 00:07:55.03\00:07:57.11 We like to use it for anything that 00:07:57.14\00:07:58.94 has to do with the heart. 00:07:58.97\00:08:00.02 It's also very good 00:08:00.05\00:08:01.17 for a number of other 00:08:01.20\00:08:02.57 health problems... 00:08:02.60\00:08:05.15 such as cancer, 00:08:05.18\00:08:08.44 and digestive complaints 00:08:08.47\00:08:10.31 and in a wide variety of 00:08:10.34\00:08:11.72 internal problems 00:08:11.75\00:08:13.25 CoQ-10 can be useful. 00:08:13.28\00:08:15.10 Then, "apples. " 00:08:15.13\00:08:16.90 Apples have a number 00:08:16.93\00:08:20.13 of what we might call 00:08:20.16\00:08:21.64 phytochemicals in them 00:08:21.67\00:08:23.43 and also pectin and boron. 00:08:23.46\00:08:26.42 And all of these 00:08:26.45\00:08:27.73 have a good influence 00:08:27.76\00:08:29.32 on the heart. 00:08:29.35\00:08:30.32 And so we can be 00:08:30.33\00:08:31.97 thankful that 00:08:32.00\00:08:33.14 the Lord has put 00:08:33.17\00:08:34.58 these phytochemicals 00:08:34.61\00:08:36.19 ...a whole list of them, 00:08:36.22\00:08:37.24 in apples. 00:08:37.27\00:08:38.51 Plus pectin 00:08:38.54\00:08:39.93 and boron 00:08:39.96\00:08:41.01 that makes it so that 00:08:41.04\00:08:42.20 an apple a day is very good 00:08:42.23\00:08:43.86 for people who 00:08:43.89\00:08:45.30 have high blood pressure. 00:08:45.33\00:08:47.02 And many people 00:08:47.05\00:08:48.45 who do 00:08:48.48\00:08:49.87 some very simple 00:08:49.90\00:08:50.87 lifestyle things, 00:08:50.88\00:08:52.08 and also 00:08:52.11\00:08:54.13 take these special 00:08:54.16\00:08:55.60 nutrient supplements 00:08:55.63\00:08:56.90 can control their blood pressure 00:08:56.93\00:08:58.40 with nothing more. 00:08:58.43\00:09:00.69 Now, not all 00:09:00.72\00:09:02.00 blood pressure is 00:09:02.03\00:09:03.33 the chronic maintenance 00:09:03.36\00:09:05.10 blood pressure. 00:09:05.13\00:09:06.10 There are times 00:09:06.11\00:09:07.08 when the blood pressure 00:09:07.09\00:09:08.06 goes up acutely 00:09:08.07\00:09:09.04 and we are very worried 00:09:09.07\00:09:10.65 about the person. 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.56 In those cases, we need to be 00:09:12.59\00:09:13.56 prepared to help bring the blood pressure 00:09:14.14\00:09:15.86 down right away. 00:09:15.89\00:09:17.24 And I have with me 00:09:17.27\00:09:18.48 Valerie Schreiber 00:09:18.51\00:09:19.72 who is one of my coworkers at 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.49 Uchee Pines, 00:09:21.52\00:09:22.77 and also a health educator, 00:09:22.80\00:09:24.57 and one of our instructors there 00:09:24.60\00:09:26.40 who is going to tell you how 00:09:26.43\00:09:27.96 she has had some experience 00:09:27.99\00:09:29.66 with dealing with 00:09:29.69\00:09:31.04 an acutely elevated 00:09:31.07\00:09:32.86 blood pressure. 00:09:32.89\00:09:33.86 Valerie Schreiber... Thank you. 00:09:33.87\00:09:35.78 I had an experience 00:09:35.81\00:09:37.39 not too awfully long ago 00:09:37.42\00:09:39.38 in Romania 00:09:39.41\00:09:40.38 where I was awakened in the middle 00:09:40.39\00:09:41.73 of the night 00:09:41.76\00:09:42.73 with one of our patients 00:09:42.74\00:09:44.27 at our Lifestyle Center over there... 00:09:44.30\00:09:45.95 whose blood pressure had gone 00:09:45.98\00:09:47.87 extremely high. 00:09:47.90\00:09:48.87 In fact, it was over 200 00:09:48.88\00:09:50.27 the top number 00:09:50.30\00:09:51.96 and the bottom number was over 150. 00:09:51.99\00:09:54.13 And so they said to me, 00:09:54.16\00:09:55.57 "She's going to stroke unless you know what to do. " 00:09:55.60\00:09:58.19 So I jumped out of bed real fast 00:09:58.22\00:10:00.05 and ran down to her room 00:10:00.08\00:10:01.47 and we immediately 00:10:01.50\00:10:02.79 set her up, 00:10:02.82\00:10:04.18 put her feet into 00:10:04.21\00:10:05.48 a hot foot bath, 00:10:05.51\00:10:06.48 and I gave 00:10:06.49\00:10:08.66 a teaspoon of 00:10:08.69\00:10:10.11 Epsom salts 00:10:10.14\00:10:11.27 which you just heard Dr. Agatha 00:10:11.30\00:10:12.81 talk about, which is magnesium. 00:10:12.84\00:10:14.75 Now, I gave a heaping 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.52 teaspoon which 00:10:16.55\00:10:17.85 would look something like this 00:10:17.88\00:10:25.46 maybe even a little bit more than that, 00:10:25.49\00:10:26.94 and you just put it in the water 00:10:26.97\00:10:28.55 and you just stir. 00:10:28.58\00:10:30.87 Now it is kind of bitter... 00:10:30.90\00:10:32.82 but let me tell you, 00:10:32.85\00:10:33.90 when you are an emergency, 00:10:33.93\00:10:35.15 you better drink it. 00:10:35.18\00:10:36.18 So, you just drink it on down. 00:10:36.21\00:10:38.28 Now, it will loosen your bowels 00:10:38.31\00:10:40.15 a little bit but that's nothing to be 00:10:40.18\00:10:41.64 concerned about because 00:10:41.67\00:10:42.67 it will relax the blood vessels 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.18 and it will bring the blood pressure down. 00:10:44.21\00:10:45.97 And within about 15 minutes, 00:10:46.00\00:10:47.85 we were taking her blood pressure 00:10:47.88\00:10:49.38 and her blood pressure 00:10:49.41\00:10:50.61 was coming down nicely... 00:10:50.64\00:10:52.05 and she did not stroke. 00:10:52.08\00:10:53.05 So that was an incredible experience for me. 00:10:53.59\00:10:55.63 But I want to show you some other 00:10:55.66\00:10:57.46 things that you can do. 00:10:57.49\00:10:58.82 You can put someone immediately 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.35 into a bathtub 00:11:01.38\00:11:02.79 and do what we call 00:11:02.82\00:11:03.93 a hot half bath, 00:11:03.96\00:11:05.03 so the water could come up here 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.70 just about to your waistline 00:11:06.73\00:11:08.29 would be sufficient 00:11:08.32\00:11:09.31 and you just sit in there 00:11:09.34\00:11:10.60 and I would still, in an emergency, 00:11:10.63\00:11:12.61 give some Epsom salts 00:11:12.64\00:11:14.30 and the blood pressure 00:11:14.33\00:11:15.46 will start to come down. 00:11:15.49\00:11:16.76 However, if you're not able to 00:11:16.79\00:11:18.20 do that and the patient 00:11:18.23\00:11:19.46 is very serious and really can't move, 00:11:19.49\00:11:21.59 the important thing 00:11:21.62\00:11:23.16 is to give them water 00:11:23.19\00:11:24.16 about every 10 minutes, 00:11:24.18\00:11:25.17 and have them drinking water, 00:11:25.20\00:11:26.41 give them the Epsom salts, 00:11:26.44\00:11:28.33 and sit them up 00:11:28.36\00:11:30.62 if at all possible, 00:11:30.65\00:11:32.10 have them sitting up 00:11:32.13\00:11:33.37 and you can do a hot foot bath 00:11:33.40\00:11:34.72 but there's one other thing that you can do, 00:11:34.75\00:11:36.53 and I'm going to show you on Melissa 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.51 as she gets up here on the table. 00:11:38.54\00:11:40.64 Let's say it's someone 00:11:40.67\00:11:41.97 that is just 00:11:42.00\00:11:43.27 on the verge of stroking and 00:11:43.30\00:11:45.36 they're in bed. 00:11:45.39\00:11:46.41 So I would immediately bring 00:11:46.44\00:11:49.50 a hot tub of water 00:11:49.53\00:11:51.45 and I would put their feet in a 00:11:51.48\00:11:52.62 hot tub of water 00:11:52.65\00:11:53.62 and I would elevate them 00:11:53.63\00:11:54.84 as much as possible. 00:11:54.87\00:11:56.72 I would put as many 00:11:56.75\00:11:57.95 pillows as possible 00:11:57.98\00:11:59.01 to have them sitting 00:11:59.04\00:12:00.13 up as far as they can 00:12:00.16\00:12:02.04 in the bed 00:12:02.07\00:12:03.39 and THEN, 00:12:03.42\00:12:04.39 I would get myself 00:12:04.40\00:12:06.11 some towels and 00:12:06.14\00:12:07.11 wet them real good 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.09 in hot water 00:12:08.10\00:12:09.63 and you can stick them in the 00:12:09.66\00:12:11.39 microwave for a few minutes 00:12:11.42\00:12:12.56 but if you're 00:12:12.59\00:12:13.76 in a real crunch, 00:12:13.79\00:12:15.22 and it's real serious, 00:12:15.25\00:12:17.02 just get them real hot, 00:12:17.05\00:12:18.24 wring them out and even if you don't 00:12:18.27\00:12:19.58 have time to wring them out good, 00:12:19.61\00:12:21.07 don't worry about that... 00:12:21.10\00:12:22.40 Take the hot towel, 00:12:22.43\00:12:23.78 and put it on her extremities 00:12:23.81\00:12:26.84 just like this... 00:12:26.87\00:12:29.65 and what this is doing, is... 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.29 ...her feet are in the hot water, 00:12:31.32\00:12:32.73 hot towels are on her arms, 00:12:32.76\00:12:34.36 and what this is doing is drawing 00:12:34.39\00:12:35.76 the blood to her extremities 00:12:35.79\00:12:37.53 instead of it going to her head 00:12:37.56\00:12:39.13 and giving her a stroke. 00:12:39.16\00:12:40.60 Now, one other caution 00:12:40.63\00:12:42.74 here for those that may have diabetes, 00:12:42.77\00:12:44.13 you would do this in a different way 00:12:44.88\00:12:46.48 if they had high blood pressure. 00:12:46.51\00:12:48.18 You would NOT put their feet 00:12:48.21\00:12:50.02 into a hot foot bath 00:12:50.05\00:12:51.71 because of their 00:12:51.74\00:12:52.90 lower extremities not having 00:12:52.93\00:12:54.56 good circulation... 00:12:54.59\00:12:55.56 cannot tell hot 00:12:55.57\00:12:56.54 when the temperature is too hot, 00:12:56.55\00:12:58.18 and various other reasons. 00:12:58.21\00:12:59.27 But you can do this 00:12:59.30\00:13:00.67 emergency treatment 00:13:00.70\00:13:01.67 because many people that are diabetic 00:13:01.68\00:13:03.56 also have high blood pressure, 00:13:03.59\00:13:05.14 and they could get 00:13:05.17\00:13:06.29 into a crisis as well. 00:13:06.32\00:13:07.89 So you would do the very same thing... 00:13:07.92\00:13:09.28 You would sit them up in the bed, 00:13:09.31\00:13:11.01 give them Epsom salts, 00:13:11.04\00:13:12.87 and you would wet the towels 00:13:12.90\00:13:15.02 to put on both of their arms 00:13:15.05\00:13:16.42 and then you would wet another 00:13:16.45\00:13:17.69 heavy towel in hot water 00:13:17.72\00:13:19.79 or microwave it if you can, 00:13:19.82\00:13:21.30 and put it right over the top part 00:13:21.33\00:13:23.30 over their legs and the lower part of their stomach 00:13:23.33\00:13:24.68 And this will create 00:13:25.32\00:13:26.86 the same effect as the hot foot bath, 00:13:26.89\00:13:28.61 and actually it will cause 00:13:28.64\00:13:31.81 a reaction that will give 00:13:31.84\00:13:32.97 good circulation to their feet 00:13:33.00\00:13:34.25 so they will kind of get a 00:13:34.28\00:13:35.25 double treatment there... Very good. 00:13:35.26\00:13:38.34 These are very good 00:13:38.37\00:13:40.25 treatments for people with 00:13:40.28\00:13:41.87 an acute flare-up 00:13:41.90\00:13:43.23 of high blood pressure, 00:13:43.26\00:13:44.92 and I'm glad my granddaughter 00:13:44.95\00:13:47.03 doesn't have one of those acute flare-ups... 00:13:47.06\00:13:49.45 this is Melissa, 00:13:49.48\00:13:50.81 who is my treasured granddaughter. 00:13:50.84\00:13:57.32 With high blood pressure, 00:13:57.35\00:13:59.65 we sometimes do 00:13:59.68\00:14:01.41 see people who get strokes. 00:14:01.44\00:14:03.44 I'd like to tell you a 00:14:03.47\00:14:05.06 case history briefly... 00:14:05.09\00:14:06.37 A man named, George, 00:14:06.40\00:14:08.62 who had a stroke 00:14:08.65\00:14:10.02 and was unconscious for 00:14:10.05\00:14:12.04 a few days but he could always swallow. 00:14:12.07\00:14:14.13 As long as a person can swallow, 00:14:14.16\00:14:15.88 you can manage a stroke case 00:14:15.91\00:14:17.67 without 00:14:17.70\00:14:19.44 the specialized nursing care, 00:14:19.47\00:14:21.38 and the specialized equipment 00:14:21.41\00:14:22.96 that you would need in a hospital. 00:14:22.99\00:14:26.37 But if they cannot swallow, 00:14:26.40\00:14:28.31 then they need to have a 00:14:28.34\00:14:29.86 tube placed down. 00:14:29.89\00:14:31.43 Do not try to make a person 00:14:31.46\00:14:32.99 swallow... who, 00:14:33.02\00:14:34.40 it's obvious, cannot swallow. 00:14:34.43\00:14:38.22 So, doing so may 00:14:38.25\00:14:39.92 get materials into 00:14:39.95\00:14:41.71 their lungs which can cause 00:14:41.74\00:14:43.21 really serious pneumonia... 00:14:43.24\00:14:45.29 and may cause the individual to 00:14:45.32\00:14:46.95 lose their life because 00:14:46.98\00:14:48.36 of that very thing. 00:14:48.39\00:14:50.72 Now when 00:14:50.75\00:14:52.08 George had his stroke, 00:14:52.11\00:14:54.83 we noticed that 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.82 after a while, 00:14:56.85\00:14:58.03 he would begin to get a little 00:14:58.06\00:14:59.32 restless... 00:14:59.35\00:15:02.64 He was moving his arms 00:15:02.67\00:15:04.25 and legs 00:15:04.28\00:15:06.32 as well as he could. 00:15:06.35\00:15:07.53 He had a right-side 00:15:07.56\00:15:08.85 partial paralysis. 00:15:08.88\00:15:11.96 We could tell that he would.. 00:15:11.99\00:15:13.09 "uhh" grunt a little bit 00:15:13.12\00:15:14.54 and was just obviously restless. 00:15:14.57\00:15:16.48 So we put his feet 00:15:16.51\00:15:18.44 in hot water 00:15:18.47\00:15:19.54 and we could see 00:15:19.57\00:15:20.96 almost immediately 00:15:20.99\00:15:22.13 that the congestion 00:15:22.16\00:15:23.34 that he would have in the veins 00:15:23.37\00:15:24.60 of his forehead and the veins in his 00:15:24.63\00:15:26.10 temple and in his neck 00:15:26.13\00:15:27.55 that these veins 00:15:27.58\00:15:29.23 would become 00:15:29.26\00:15:30.68 much less 00:15:30.71\00:15:32.03 congested and 00:15:32.06\00:15:34.90 he would immediately begin 00:15:34.93\00:15:36.21 to get less restless. 00:15:36.24\00:15:38.02 And as we continued 00:15:38.05\00:15:39.84 with the hot foot bath, 00:15:39.87\00:15:41.02 he would very shortly 00:15:41.05\00:15:43.31 stop his movements at all 00:15:43.34\00:15:45.19 a peaceful, 00:15:45.22\00:15:46.87 relaxed 00:15:46.90\00:15:49.66 atmosphere would come 00:15:49.69\00:15:51.27 about the room 00:15:51.30\00:15:52.27 and about the patient 00:15:52.28\00:15:53.27 and we would all feel 00:15:53.30\00:15:54.63 good that we had 00:15:54.66\00:15:56.10 been able to 00:15:56.13\00:15:57.52 help him in that. 00:15:57.55\00:15:59.29 Now, 00:15:59.32\00:16:00.72 we approach 00:16:00.75\00:16:02.02 high blood pressure from 00:16:02.05\00:16:03.32 a great number of ways 00:16:03.35\00:16:04.72 and right at this time 00:16:04.75\00:16:06.62 Don Miller is going 00:16:06.65\00:16:07.95 to talk with you about 00:16:07.98\00:16:08.97 some other methods 00:16:09.00\00:16:10.32 that we use to 00:16:10.35\00:16:11.65 treat high blood pressure. 00:16:11.68\00:16:13.25 Don Miller. 00:16:13.28\00:16:14.55 One of my favorite ways 00:16:14.58\00:16:15.96 of treating myself 00:16:15.99\00:16:17.47 is by the food that I eat. 00:16:17.50\00:16:19.47 And, it's 00:16:19.50\00:16:21.13 almost a given that 00:16:21.16\00:16:22.32 if a person eats the right type of foods, 00:16:22.35\00:16:24.51 they are not going to get these 00:16:24.54\00:16:25.84 wrong types of diseases. 00:16:25.87\00:16:27.27 As a matter of fact, the Bible says... 00:16:27.30\00:16:28.85 "If you will diligently harken 00:16:28.88\00:16:31.00 unto the voice of the Lord your God 00:16:31.03\00:16:32.36 and do that which is right in His sight, 00:16:32.39\00:16:34.20 and give ear to His commandments 00:16:34.23\00:16:35.56 and keep of all of the statutes, 00:16:35.59\00:16:36.79 I will lay 00:16:36.82\00:16:39.13 NONE of these diseases upon you 00:16:39.16\00:16:41.23 which I have brought upon 00:16:41.26\00:16:42.56 the Egyptians. " 00:16:42.59\00:16:43.87 We look back in 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.31 antiquity to 00:16:45.34\00:16:47.17 the Egyptians... 00:16:47.20\00:16:48.46 they can take the mummies now 00:16:48.49\00:16:50.11 and they can do some 00:16:50.14\00:16:51.50 pathological studies 00:16:51.53\00:16:52.98 of their bodies and they were finding 00:16:53.01\00:16:54.56 that they were dying of the same things 00:16:54.59\00:16:55.56 that we're dying of today. 00:16:56.56\00:16:57.56 But God has said, 00:16:57.59\00:16:58.56 If you do what I SAY, 00:16:58.59\00:16:59.56 you won't get these diseases. " 00:16:59.87\00:17:02.12 And basically, He gave us the diet in Eden. 00:17:02.15\00:17:03.67 He said... I want you to eat fruits... 00:17:04.37\00:17:06.44 and then He 00:17:06.47\00:17:07.88 finally gave us vegetables 00:17:07.91\00:17:09.07 after sin entered, 00:17:09.10\00:17:10.13 but basically fruits, vegetables, 00:17:10.16\00:17:11.94 whole grains, nuts and seeds 00:17:11.97\00:17:13.40 are the foods God has given us 00:17:13.43\00:17:15.00 to sustain the body 00:17:15.03\00:17:16.29 in a good and healthful situation. 00:17:16.32\00:17:19.28 There are 2 types of nutrients 00:17:19.31\00:17:21.01 I want to mention right now... 00:17:21.04\00:17:22.36 One is omega-3 fatty acids, 00:17:22.39\00:17:25.41 and the other is 00:17:25.44\00:17:26.82 L- arginine. 00:17:26.85\00:17:28.29 These are 00:17:28.32\00:17:29.63 very nice 00:17:29.66\00:17:31.72 nutrients that God has given to us. 00:17:31.75\00:17:33.70 You hear a lot about the omega-3 00:17:33.73\00:17:35.33 fatty acids. 00:17:35.36\00:17:36.33 You don't hear much about 00:17:36.34\00:17:37.58 the arginine... 00:17:37.61\00:17:38.58 but I'm going to tell you 00:17:38.59\00:17:39.56 a little bit about each 00:17:39.57\00:17:40.54 one of these things. 00:17:40.55\00:17:41.96 Basically with the omega-3 fatty acids... 00:17:41.99\00:17:43.92 let me explain first of all 00:17:43.95\00:17:45.21 where you get the omega-3. 00:17:45.24\00:17:46.58 We always say... 00:17:46.61\00:17:47.58 Where do they get the omega-3 from? 00:17:47.59\00:17:49.34 Basically, you've got this 00:17:49.37\00:17:51.72 fatty acid chain 00:17:51.75\00:17:53.39 and you have an alpha end 00:17:53.42\00:17:54.99 and an omega end. 00:17:55.02\00:17:56.42 The omega end 00:17:56.45\00:17:58.42 3 bonds up... 00:17:58.45\00:18:00.87 there is a double bond 00:18:00.90\00:18:02.50 and that's the omega-3 end... 00:18:02.53\00:18:04.59 that's where we get the omega-3 00:18:04.62\00:18:06.28 part of the fatty acid. 00:18:06.31\00:18:07.52 It's a very good 00:18:07.55\00:18:08.94 fatty acid for us to have. 00:18:08.97\00:18:10.73 It comes in lots of 00:18:10.76\00:18:12.29 different foods that 00:18:12.32\00:18:13.49 are available to us. 00:18:13.52\00:18:14.81 Now normally 00:18:14.84\00:18:15.97 out there in 00:18:16.00\00:18:17.60 the markets, 00:18:17.63\00:18:18.95 and in nutrition stores, 00:18:18.98\00:18:20.69 you will find your 00:18:20.72\00:18:21.92 omega-3 fatty acids 00:18:21.95\00:18:23.47 being sold as some types of fish oils... 00:18:23.50\00:18:26.35 And whereas they are 00:18:26.38\00:18:27.85 high in omega-3 fatty acids, 00:18:27.88\00:18:29.80 they are also high in 00:18:29.83\00:18:31.37 biomagnification 00:18:31.40\00:18:32.69 and biointensification 00:18:32.72\00:18:34.14 because they are swimming and living 00:18:34.17\00:18:36.19 and doing everything 00:18:36.22\00:18:37.60 that they do today 00:18:37.63\00:18:38.96 in polluted waters. 00:18:38.99\00:18:39.96 And so I tend to 00:18:39.97\00:18:41.33 stay away from 00:18:41.36\00:18:42.53 the omega-3 fatty acids from 00:18:42.56\00:18:44.58 fish sources 00:18:44.61\00:18:46.17 and go to the natural sources 00:18:46.20\00:18:48.04 that God has given to us. 00:18:48.07\00:18:49.35 Probably one of the highest 00:18:49.38\00:18:51.39 sources of omega-3 fatty acids is 00:18:51.42\00:18:53.72 flaxseed oil 00:18:53.75\00:18:54.90 or just flaxseed. 00:18:54.93\00:18:56.49 It's a very nice food. 00:18:56.52\00:18:58.07 It's a very good food. 00:18:58.10\00:18:59.08 As a matter of fact, 00:18:59.11\00:19:00.22 not only is it high 00:19:00.25\00:19:01.53 in omega-3 fatty acids, 00:19:01.56\00:19:03.14 it's an anti-inflammatory. 00:19:03.17\00:19:05.15 Not only is it an 00:19:05.18\00:19:06.56 anti-inflammatory, 00:19:06.59\00:19:07.86 it's high in fiber. 00:19:07.89\00:19:09.18 So if you have a sluggish bowel, 00:19:09.21\00:19:11.23 if you have some type 00:19:11.26\00:19:12.58 of an intestinal problem, 00:19:12.61\00:19:13.95 taking flaxseed is 00:19:13.98\00:19:15.43 an excellent 00:19:15.46\00:19:16.43 solution for that. 00:19:16.44\00:19:17.59 Another nice 00:19:17.62\00:19:19.04 source of omega-3 00:19:19.07\00:19:20.23 fatty acids is walnuts. 00:19:20.26\00:19:21.67 I love walnuts 00:19:22.35\00:19:23.70 and they are very high 00:19:23.73\00:19:24.88 in omega-3 fatty acids... 00:19:24.91\00:19:26.15 especially the English walnut 00:19:26.18\00:19:27.44 and the black walnut. 00:19:27.47\00:19:29.08 But there are many, many foods. 00:19:29.11\00:19:31.16 As a matter of fact, 00:19:31.19\00:19:32.16 most of your foods 00:19:32.17\00:19:33.14 will have some omega-3 fatty acids. 00:19:33.15\00:19:34.79 I have a little list here 00:19:34.82\00:19:36.27 with some that have it... 00:19:36.30\00:19:37.69 Canned spinach, 00:19:37.72\00:19:38.98 a very nice source of 00:19:39.01\00:19:40.40 omega-3 fatty acids. 00:19:40.43\00:19:41.67 Now people say... 00:19:41.70\00:19:43.22 "I don't like spinach. " 00:19:43.25\00:19:45.46 Children usually say that. 00:19:45.49\00:19:47.20 Well you know, 00:19:47.23\00:19:48.33 I don't know why they don't. 00:19:48.36\00:19:49.45 But when I was growing up, 00:19:49.48\00:19:51.01 my family had a little tradition 00:19:51.04\00:19:53.28 I had 3 sisters... 00:19:53.31\00:19:55.17 I have 3 sisters still... 00:19:55.20\00:19:56.84 and we would all sing 00:19:56.87\00:19:58.20 that little thing... 00:19:58.23\00:19:59.20 "I'm Popeye the sailor man"... 00:19:59.21\00:20:00.96 and then we'd say, 00:20:00.99\00:20:02.78 "and I eat my spinach" 00:20:02.81\00:20:04.02 and we'd pop it in... 00:20:04.05\00:20:05.06 And it was such a joyful 00:20:05.10\00:20:06.11 thing to do. 00:20:06.14\00:20:07.11 And so if we make eating 00:20:07.12\00:20:08.09 a little bit more fun 00:20:08.12\00:20:09.63 rather than "EAT YOUR SPINACH." 00:20:09.66\00:20:11.12 we might enjoy 00:20:11.15\00:20:12.76 it a little bit more. 00:20:12.79\00:20:13.76 Almonds! 00:20:13.77\00:20:15.09 A nice source 00:20:15.12\00:20:16.80 of omega-3 fatty acids. 00:20:16.83\00:20:18.28 California avocados, 00:20:18.31\00:20:20.18 sweet potatoes, bananas 00:20:20.21\00:20:21.65 pretty nice medicine 00:20:21.68\00:20:23.65 wouldn't you agree? 00:20:23.68\00:20:24.65 I suggest we get on 00:20:24.66\00:20:25.91 omega-3's 00:20:25.94\00:20:26.91 because they are all heart-friendly, 00:20:26.92\00:20:28.56 they are good for relaxing 00:20:28.59\00:20:30.35 the muscle walls of the arteries 00:20:30.38\00:20:32.42 and good for cleaning out the cholesterol. 00:20:32.45\00:20:33.82 It will help your cholesterol to come down. 00:20:34.38\00:20:36.19 L- arginine is 00:20:36.22\00:20:37.39 another one that I want to mention 00:20:37.42\00:20:38.86 briefly today... 00:20:38.89\00:20:40.06 because it has a very nice 00:20:40.09\00:20:41.62 effect on the artery walls. 00:20:41.65\00:20:43.77 Basically, 00:20:43.80\00:20:45.93 your body produces... 00:20:45.96\00:20:47.88 basically your endothelium cells 00:20:47.91\00:20:50.10 on the inside of your artery walls, 00:20:50.13\00:20:51.85 produce 00:20:51.88\00:20:53.53 a chemical called 00:20:53.56\00:20:54.88 nitric oxide. 00:20:54.91\00:20:56.61 It's not nitrous oxide 00:20:56.64\00:20:58.78 which is laughing gas but 00:20:58.81\00:20:59.94 nitric oxide. 00:20:59.97\00:21:01.04 The nitric oxide 00:21:01.07\00:21:03.01 allows 00:21:03.04\00:21:04.30 the muscle walls 00:21:04.33\00:21:05.58 to relax... 00:21:05.61\00:21:06.89 so they are not always tensed up 00:21:06.92\00:21:08.50 causing high blood pressure, 00:21:08.53\00:21:10.53 but they cause them to relax... 00:21:10.56\00:21:12.39 BUT as cholesterol 00:21:12.42\00:21:14.33 goes up in the body, 00:21:14.36\00:21:15.85 it sort of destroys 00:21:15.88\00:21:17.93 some of that 00:21:17.96\00:21:18.93 nitric acid. 00:21:18.96\00:21:20.30 As that nitric oxide is 00:21:20.33\00:21:22.23 being destroyed, 00:21:22.26\00:21:24.12 we produce more 00:21:24.15\00:21:25.58 of the nitric oxide 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.99 by the L-arginine 00:21:28.02\00:21:30.17 in those endothelium cells... 00:21:30.20\00:21:32.54 But pretty soon our bodies 00:21:32.57\00:21:34.17 become exhausted of the 00:21:34.20\00:21:36.08 L- arginine and 00:21:36.11\00:21:37.62 we can no longer produce 00:21:37.65\00:21:38.89 the nitric oxide. 00:21:38.92\00:21:40.41 So, we have to eat foods 00:21:40.44\00:21:42.14 that are high 00:21:42.17\00:21:43.31 in L-arginine 00:21:43.34\00:21:44.93 to help our 00:21:44.96\00:21:46.25 vascular walls relax 00:21:46.28\00:21:48.12 and bring down blood pressure. 00:21:48.15\00:21:49.38 And I'll just briefly 00:21:49.41\00:21:50.43 read off a list 00:21:50.46\00:21:51.71 of some of the ways that we can get 00:21:51.74\00:21:53.26 our L-arginine. 00:21:53.29\00:21:54.26 I'll say, first of all, 00:21:54.27\00:21:55.52 fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds... 00:21:55.55\00:21:57.58 that's a given... you're going to find it. 00:21:57.61\00:21:59.25 But some very high... 00:21:59.28\00:22:00.58 as a matter of fact, 00:22:00.61\00:22:01.58 the highest source is 00:22:01.60\00:22:02.57 roasted pumpkins seeds. 00:22:02.58\00:22:04.83 I just had some of those for breakfast today. 00:22:04.86\00:22:06.83 Roasted pumpkin seeds, 00:22:06.86\00:22:08.27 delicious food! 00:22:08.30\00:22:09.27 Soybeans, lentils, 00:22:09.28\00:22:10.83 red kidneys, baby limas, 00:22:10.86\00:22:12.73 almonds, brazil nuts, 00:22:12.76\00:22:13.97 all of these things... 00:22:14.00\00:22:15.25 are high in L-arginine 00:22:15.28\00:22:17.36 which is going to allow 00:22:17.39\00:22:18.51 your body to produce 00:22:18.54\00:22:20.13 the nitric oxide, 00:22:20.16\00:22:21.39 which is going to allow your 00:22:21.42\00:22:22.75 artery walls to relax 00:22:22.78\00:22:24.23 therefore, bringing down 00:22:24.26\00:22:25.73 your high blood pressure... 00:22:25.76\00:22:26.84 Dr. Thrash... Yes. 00:22:26.87\00:22:28.51 Want some medicine? 00:22:28.54\00:22:29.51 Oh YES... 00:22:29.52\00:22:31.24 Yes, a walnut 00:22:31.27\00:22:33.07 is very high 00:22:33.10\00:22:34.70 in a number of things. 00:22:34.73\00:22:35.87 It has the omega-3 00:22:35.90\00:22:37.42 fatty acids. 00:22:37.45\00:22:39.54 It has a very good complement 00:22:39.57\00:22:41.05 of a lot of minerals 00:22:41.08\00:22:43.27 and some very good B vitamins. 00:22:43.30\00:22:45.21 It's a wonderful food 00:22:45.24\00:22:47.44 and I much prefer to 00:22:47.47\00:22:48.89 take a pill that way 00:22:48.92\00:22:50.01 than from some 00:22:50.04\00:22:51.48 pharmaceutical agent. 00:22:51.51\00:22:52.67 Now there are some 00:22:52.70\00:22:54.34 other supplements that 00:22:54.37\00:22:55.54 can be helpful to you with 00:22:55.57\00:22:56.84 blood pressure. 00:22:56.87\00:22:57.84 One of those is "taurine. " 00:22:57.85\00:23:00.20 Taurine, which I will 00:23:00.23\00:23:01.91 show you on the screen, 00:23:01.94\00:23:03.48 so that you will know how 00:23:03.51\00:23:04.92 it's spelled... 00:23:04.95\00:23:05.92 Taurine has a number of 00:23:05.93\00:23:07.76 good influences 00:23:07.79\00:23:09.01 on the nervous system 00:23:09.04\00:23:12.02 and even in the growth 00:23:12.05\00:23:14.29 of babies' brains. 00:23:14.32\00:23:16.93 So, mother's milk 00:23:16.96\00:23:18.65 which is high in taurine, 00:23:18.68\00:23:20.01 is the best for the baby's 00:23:20.04\00:23:22.30 brain development; 00:23:22.33\00:23:23.58 whereas cow's milk 00:23:23.61\00:23:25.43 has almost no taurine in it. 00:23:25.46\00:23:27.14 So, that's a good thing 00:23:27.74\00:23:29.48 that we want. 00:23:29.51\00:23:30.48 Vitamin E... 00:23:30.49\00:23:31.75 can be taken up to, 00:23:31.78\00:23:33.40 say... 400 IU 00:23:33.43\00:23:36.02 a day. 00:23:36.05\00:23:37.02 More than that may cause 00:23:37.03\00:23:38.34 some problems 00:23:38.37\00:23:39.60 with the clotting mechanism. 00:23:39.63\00:23:41.12 And then vitamin C. 00:23:41.15\00:23:42.99 We have not always 00:23:43.02\00:23:44.18 thought of vitamin C as being 00:23:44.21\00:23:45.54 helpful to the blood pressure, 00:23:45.57\00:23:46.77 but recent studies 00:23:46.80\00:23:49.69 show that vitamin C 00:23:49.72\00:23:51.42 is quite useful in that way. 00:23:51.45\00:23:53.84 I like to get vitamin C 00:23:53.87\00:23:55.38 not from a pill, 00:23:55.41\00:23:56.70 but you may 00:23:56.73\00:23:58.33 want to use that if your blood pressure is high up. 00:23:58.36\00:24:00.00 But I like to get 00:24:00.66\00:24:02.75 my vitamin C 00:24:02.78\00:24:04.37 from the foods that I eat. 00:24:04.40\00:24:06.24 And Valerie Schreiber is 00:24:06.27\00:24:07.83 going to show you some of these 00:24:07.86\00:24:09.28 delicious foods 00:24:09.31\00:24:11.24 that are high in vitamin C. 00:24:11.27\00:24:13.07 What do you have for us Valerie? 00:24:13.10\00:24:14.41 Well, right here I have 00:24:14.44\00:24:16.45 fruits. 00:24:16.48\00:24:17.69 Most people think that 00:24:17.72\00:24:19.33 "Oh, vitamin C just comes in fruits. " 00:24:19.36\00:24:21.71 But vitamin C is also 00:24:21.74\00:24:23.17 in our vegetables. 00:24:23.20\00:24:24.17 And one of the highest sources of vitamin C 00:24:24.18\00:24:25.99 happens to be right here 00:24:26.02\00:24:27.60 in red pepper. 00:24:27.63\00:24:29.15 This is one of the very highest sources 00:24:29.18\00:24:31.07 of vitamin C. 00:24:31.10\00:24:32.29 Now, another place 00:24:32.32\00:24:34.39 where there is high sources of 00:24:34.42\00:24:36.00 vitamin C happens to be in potatoes. 00:24:36.03\00:24:37.39 Now we don't think of that, 00:24:38.08\00:24:40.03 but in Ireland, 00:24:40.06\00:24:41.27 back in the mid-1840s, 00:24:41.30\00:24:44.50 they had an epidemic of 00:24:44.53\00:24:46.43 scurvy happening. 00:24:46.46\00:24:47.65 And they never had this 00:24:47.68\00:24:48.88 in the country before 00:24:48.91\00:24:50.19 until they had 00:24:50.22\00:24:51.51 a blight with the potatoes. 00:24:51.54\00:24:53.16 And then over 2 million 00:24:53.19\00:24:55.19 people got sick 00:24:55.22\00:24:56.51 and died of various infections 00:24:56.54\00:24:58.22 and diseases... 00:24:58.25\00:24:59.29 and they related it right back 00:24:59.32\00:25:00.88 to the fact that they were 00:25:00.91\00:25:01.96 heavy potato-eaters. 00:25:01.99\00:25:03.14 And really, around the world, 00:25:03.17\00:25:04.40 this is a staple in almost 00:25:04.43\00:25:05.73 every country 00:25:05.76\00:25:06.73 and it has quite a bit of 00:25:06.74\00:25:08.08 vitamin C and it is... 00:25:08.11\00:25:09.39 when you cook this, 00:25:09.42\00:25:10.63 even though you bake this 00:25:10.66\00:25:12.11 potato or cook it, 00:25:12.14\00:25:13.28 it retains at least 30% 00:25:13.31\00:25:15.16 of its vitamin C. 00:25:15.19\00:25:16.46 Unlike what would happen 00:25:16.49\00:25:18.17 in a fruit. 00:25:18.20\00:25:19.29 And so, you know, 00:25:19.32\00:25:20.29 God is so good to us, 00:25:20.30\00:25:21.27 He puts it just 00:25:21.28\00:25:22.71 the right way 00:25:22.74\00:25:24.13 in either fruits or vegetables, 00:25:24.16\00:25:25.75 and so we are better to eat 00:25:25.78\00:25:27.30 them more fresh or steamed 00:25:27.33\00:25:29.31 but those that we need to cook, 00:25:29.34\00:25:30.70 like a potato, 00:25:30.73\00:25:31.76 He still has it chemically 00:25:31.79\00:25:33.63 fixed in such a way 00:25:33.66\00:25:34.88 that we still retain our vitamin C. 00:25:34.91\00:25:37.97 And so, it's also 00:25:38.00\00:25:39.89 in grapefruit juice. 00:25:39.92\00:25:42.07 It has a good quantity 00:25:42.10\00:25:43.63 of vitamin C in grapefruit juice. 00:25:43.66\00:25:46.09 Tomatoes have 00:25:46.12\00:25:47.73 a good amount of vitamin C. 00:25:47.76\00:25:50.03 Kiwi has a real good 00:25:50.06\00:25:51.84 amount of vitamin C. 00:25:51.87\00:25:52.87 And believe it or not, 00:25:52.90\00:25:55.37 so does brussel sprouts, 00:25:55.40\00:25:56.92 broccoli, cauliflower, 00:25:56.95\00:25:58.88 all have a good 00:25:58.91\00:26:00.22 amount of vitamin C. 00:26:00.25\00:26:01.58 Now, a few other things 00:26:01.61\00:26:03.10 I'd like to just tell you about 00:26:03.13\00:26:04.52 vitamin C 00:26:04.55\00:26:05.70 is the fact that 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.53 it is also a decongestant. 00:26:07.56\00:26:09.30 You know how when you get a cold 00:26:09.33\00:26:10.48 and you get a stuffy nose 00:26:10.51\00:26:11.53 and you run out and you buy all these antihistamines, 00:26:11.56\00:26:13.67 well, all you need to do is 00:26:13.70\00:26:14.83 increase your vitamin C... 00:26:14.86\00:26:16.40 Because vitamin C, 00:26:16.43\00:26:18.05 it deactivates 00:26:18.08\00:26:19.84 histamine in your body. 00:26:19.87\00:26:21.15 So the next time you're congested, 00:26:21.18\00:26:22.59 just start eating some 00:26:22.62\00:26:24.30 fresh fruits of vitamin C 00:26:24.33\00:26:26.27 and you'll find that it will 00:26:26.30\00:26:27.57 decongest your head 00:26:27.60\00:26:29.40 and you won't need to go out and buy 00:26:29.43\00:26:30.49 antihistamines. 00:26:30.52\00:26:31.49 Now vitamin E... 00:26:31.50\00:26:32.62 we'll talk a little bit about vitamin E. 00:26:32.65\00:26:34.40 Vitamin E happens to be 00:26:34.43\00:26:36.07 one of the vitamins that is 00:26:36.10\00:26:37.53 ALMOST in every 00:26:37.56\00:26:39.15 common food that we eat. 00:26:39.18\00:26:42.39 It is high in abundance 00:26:42.42\00:26:43.86 in your grains and wheat germ 00:26:43.89\00:26:46.18 and nuts 00:26:46.21\00:26:48.45 and seeds 00:26:48.48\00:26:49.75 but it is also in vegetables 00:26:49.78\00:26:51.75 It's in broccoli 00:26:51.78\00:26:52.98 and it's in cauliflower 00:26:53.01\00:26:54.78 as I have right here, 00:26:54.81\00:26:56.02 and asparagus and tomatoes and carrots 00:26:56.05\00:26:57.77 and it is quite 00:26:58.43\00:26:59.83 a bit in our leafy green vegetables. 00:26:59.86\00:27:03.53 And, as well, as it is in fruit. 00:27:03.56\00:27:05.91 So you know, God is so good... 00:27:05.94\00:27:07.13 He just puts everything 00:27:07.16\00:27:08.96 that we need for 00:27:08.99\00:27:10.13 life and health in all 00:27:10.16\00:27:11.92 of His vegetables and 00:27:11.95\00:27:13.35 fruit, and nuts and grains 00:27:13.38\00:27:15.14 And if we learn to eat them 00:27:15.17\00:27:16.47 properly this way, 00:27:16.50\00:27:18.15 in the right fashion, 00:27:18.18\00:27:19.72 and not overcook them 00:27:19.75\00:27:21.48 and not put them in fat, 00:27:21.51\00:27:22.76 we will have all that we need 00:27:22.79\00:27:24.46 for life. 00:27:24.49\00:27:25.78 And I see walnuts have 00:27:25.81\00:27:26.88 shown up again... 00:27:26.91\00:27:29.18 and sunflower seeds. 00:27:29.21\00:27:30.74 So we can, 00:27:30.77\00:27:32.30 with blood pressure problems, 00:27:32.33\00:27:34.11 we can feel 00:27:34.14\00:27:35.21 very good about 00:27:35.24\00:27:36.59 eating these nuts and seeds 00:27:36.62\00:27:38.65 and know that we have 00:27:38.68\00:27:40.02 done something very good 00:27:40.05\00:27:41.19 for the blood pressure. 00:27:41.22\00:27:43.11 So, with these very 00:27:43.14\00:27:44.48 simple things that we have 00:27:44.51\00:27:46.04 the Lord has made it 00:27:46.07\00:27:47.63 so that we are not 00:27:47.66\00:27:48.85 powerless against the 00:27:48.88\00:27:50.26 influence of the evil one 00:27:50.29\00:27:51.70 but have His tools 00:27:51.73\00:27:53.39 that we can work with. 00:27:53.42\00:27:54.40
