to a life of restfulness 00:00:59.59\00:01:04.13 is trust in God. 00:01:04.16\00:01:06.17 Certainly our love for God, our trust in Him brings a life 00:01:06.20\00:01:11.00 of restfulness, but there are some things that 00:01:11.03\00:01:13.64 you can do also. 00:01:13.67\00:01:14.96 You can make your life, you can make your surroundings, 00:01:14.99\00:01:18.24 you can make your home, your car, and your schedule, 00:01:18.27\00:01:21.55 you can make these all very regular, very orderly, 00:01:21.58\00:01:27.18 very balanced, and as you do that, you'll find that your life 00:01:27.21\00:01:31.14 does have a great deal of restfulness. 00:01:31.17\00:01:33.60 I would like to show you my schedule, while it may not be 00:01:33.63\00:01:37.53 ideal, and it may not be something that will fit you 00:01:37.56\00:01:40.27 I hope that as we go through my daily schedule, 00:01:40.30\00:01:43.13 you will that I have tried to make it as regular as possible. 00:01:43.16\00:01:47.04 Notice that I try to get up at five in the morning, 00:01:47.07\00:01:51.05 and I immediately get ready for outdoor exercise. 00:01:51.08\00:01:55.54 This outdoor exercise is going to be vigorous so I want the 00:01:55.57\00:01:58.61 proper clothing for outdoor exercise, very vigorous 00:01:58.64\00:02:02.48 and sometimes it is even hard labor. 00:02:02.51\00:02:05.04 Then right away at 5:05, generally I can begin devotions, 00:02:05.07\00:02:11.35 and my devotions will usually last until it's time for 00:02:11.38\00:02:16.41 family worship at about 6:45. 00:02:16.44\00:02:18.58 Then we have a breakfast around 7:00 every morning when worship 00:02:18.61\00:02:23.90 finishes, we don't cut it off exactly, but when worship 00:02:23.93\00:02:27.75 is finished then we have breakfast, and usually I can 00:02:27.78\00:02:31.72 count on breakfast lasting about an hour from the time 00:02:31.75\00:02:35.25 we sit down and get served, eat, brush teeth, and everything 00:02:35.28\00:02:41.51 is ready for us to take our leave from the house, 00:02:41.54\00:02:46.13 usually I can count on about an hour so at about 8:00 00:02:46.16\00:02:49.98 I can expect that I can go outside for outdoor labor. 00:02:50.01\00:02:53.84 Now you will notice in the next graphic that I will be 00:02:53.87\00:02:59.20 showing you here that after hard labor, then at around 00:02:59.23\00:03:04.35 10:00 in the morning I come inside from hard labor 00:03:04.38\00:03:08.81 where I have gotten some sunshine and some relaxing 00:03:08.84\00:03:13.39 and sometimes very difficult labor and shower and dress 00:03:13.42\00:03:20.26 and go to the office. 00:03:20.29\00:03:21.49 Then during my office time it's usually rather busy but 00:03:21.52\00:03:26.99 about 1:00, most of the time, fairly promptly at 1:00, 00:03:27.02\00:03:32.16 sometimes a little bit before, sometimes a little bit after 00:03:32.19\00:03:36.38 1:00, I get the opportunity to go to my home and have 00:03:36.41\00:03:42.16 some quiet time. 00:03:42.19\00:03:43.16 At that time I may have prayer or read the Bible, 00:03:43.17\00:03:46.78 or take a short nap. 00:03:46.81\00:03:49.09 I like to take a nap before a meal rather that after because 00:03:49.12\00:03:53.23 after a meal naps are inhibiting to the digestive process 00:03:53.26\00:03:59.90 so we don't want to do it after a meal but rather have the body 00:03:59.93\00:04:03.64 relaxed and rested before the meal. 00:04:03.67\00:04:05.96 Then I can expect that about an hour will be occupied 00:04:05.99\00:04:11.09 in the whole process of lunch time, then back to the office 00:04:11.12\00:04:15.44 around 2:30 until some time after 8:00 I'm in the office, 00:04:15.47\00:04:22.68 then I go home for evening devotion. 00:04:22.71\00:04:26.26 Evening devotion may last a little longer than until 9:00 00:04:26.29\00:04:32.05 but usually bed time is at 9:00, and bedtime is then 00:04:32.08\00:04:38.17 a time that has followed a regular and fairly relaxing day. 00:04:38.20\00:04:44.82 So as you see as this kind of schedule may give you some 00:04:44.85\00:04:50.15 ideas as to how you can make a schedule for yourself. 00:04:50.18\00:04:53.99 I have not mentioned in this schedule any interruptions, 00:04:54.02\00:04:59.29 and you may think oh that would be very boring if I had to 00:04:59.32\00:05:02.97 get up the same time every day and do the same thing 00:05:03.00\00:05:05.18 all the time. 00:05:05.21\00:05:06.57 I just wish it were possible to do that very thing and to 00:05:06.60\00:05:11.20 maintain the schedule so accurately as I have put it 00:05:11.23\00:05:14.84 there, but if you will have a schedule, then those 00:05:14.87\00:05:17.66 interruptions that come... I did not mention the five 00:05:17.69\00:05:19.95 telephone calls that may come during breakfast, 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.25 or the two people who may come to visit me during 00:05:22.28\00:05:26.60 the time I'm doing outdoor labor. 00:05:26.63\00:05:28.35 So I try to account for those in some way, I try to make 00:05:28.38\00:05:32.73 certain that I attend to telephone calls in a way 00:05:32.76\00:05:37.85 that will make it so that I can use as little time 00:05:37.88\00:05:41.18 as possible in that, and maybe make an appointment 00:05:41.21\00:05:43.78 later for a more extended call. 00:05:43.81\00:05:45.73 Or if people come to visit me during my outdoor labor 00:05:45.76\00:05:49.02 I'm very happy for that because I just give them the extra 00:05:49.05\00:05:51.86 shovel that I have there for that very purpose, 00:05:51.89\00:05:53.92 or an extra hoe, or I put a watering hose in their hand 00:05:53.95\00:05:58.25 or something of that nature. 00:05:58.28\00:05:59.25 I don't mind people visiting during my labor time because 00:05:59.28\00:06:04.14 it just gives me an extra hand at work. 00:06:04.17\00:06:06.45 I do not stop to visit, for the most part it has to be 00:06:06.48\00:06:10.13 an extremely unusual person for me to actually stop my labor 00:06:10.16\00:06:16.03 to entertain somebody, usually that will be a sick 00:06:16.06\00:06:20.59 child, I will stop for that. 00:06:20.62\00:06:23.05 There are many more things about restfulness than just being 00:06:23.08\00:06:27.69 regular about your habits, and I have here with me Don Miller, 00:06:27.72\00:06:31.95 and Don Miller is a lifestyle counselor at Uchee Pines 00:06:31.98\00:06:35.88 and he will talk with you also about some things having 00:06:35.91\00:06:38.69 to do with rest. Don miller! 00:06:38.72\00:06:40.17 Ok! I just want to tell a story first Dr. Thrash. 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.44 When I was first at Uchee Pines years ago, a brand new worker 00:06:43.47\00:06:47.23 and one evening she says brother Don, I need to talk with you 00:06:47.26\00:06:50.95 tomorrow morning at 8:00 at my son's home, I said fine, 00:06:50.98\00:06:53.49 I will be there. 00:06:53.53\00:06:55.01 So at 8:00 the next morning there I was standing at his 00:06:55.04\00:06:57.19 step just waiting for Dr. Thrash to show up, I was new and 00:06:57.22\00:07:00.05 and I was going to talk with Dr. Agatha Thrash, 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.98 and I was waiting, and I said she is not a very punctual 00:07:03.01\00:07:05.81 woman is she. 00:07:05.84\00:07:06.81 I kept looking at my watch, pretty soon I heard 00:07:06.82\00:07:08.29 Brother Don, and I heard it coming from down the hill 00:07:08.32\00:07:12.42 in the bush and I looked down there, and there she was 00:07:12.45\00:07:14.38 just a whacking the bushes and calling my name. 00:07:14.41\00:07:16.63 I walked down there and she handed me a hoe, 00:07:16.66\00:07:18.59 she said ok let's talk, for the next two hours we talked 00:07:18.62\00:07:21.30 and we worked in that woods, so if you ever go to visit 00:07:21.33\00:07:24.72 Dr. Thrash between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning 00:07:24.75\00:07:27.46 wear your work clothes because that may be what you are doing. 00:07:27.49\00:07:30.93 There are many types of rest and I think back to my 00:07:30.96\00:07:34.71 military experience, in the military they tell you there are 00:07:34.74\00:07:37.38 four types of rest, there is Parade rest, at ease rest, 00:07:37.41\00:07:41.33 and fall out. 00:07:41.36\00:07:42.54 We learned how to do all of those things, if we could only 00:07:42.57\00:07:45.86 learn to do as well the four types of rest that God has 00:07:45.89\00:07:49.09 given to us, we would be a whole lot better. 00:07:49.12\00:07:51.58 The first type of rest is just the relaxing rest 00:07:51.61\00:07:54.59 where you have had a busy day, you just sit down and relax, 00:07:54.62\00:07:59.86 you may lay in the hammock, you may sit in the chair, 00:07:59.89\00:08:02.29 it's just a change in pace rest. 00:08:02.32\00:08:04.71 The second one is the meditation rest, 00:08:04.74\00:08:07.54 we are going to fill each one of these out as we go along 00:08:07.57\00:08:10.10 but that meditation rest where we rest in the Lord, 00:08:10.13\00:08:12.49 He said come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden 00:08:12.52\00:08:15.33 I will give you rest. 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.24 The other one is to rest in sleep where at night time 00:08:17.27\00:08:21.00 and it's best at night time, we lay down and let our bodies 00:08:21.03\00:08:24.26 fully get a good night's rest. 00:08:24.29\00:08:26.56 The forth type of rest which is the most precious type of rest 00:08:26.59\00:08:30.06 there is, is the Sabbath rest and I'm going to fill that out 00:08:30.09\00:08:33.20 a little bit later about this great thing called the 00:08:33.23\00:08:36.32 Sabbath rest. 00:08:36.35\00:08:37.32 So God has given us four ways to rest and we need to have 00:08:37.33\00:08:40.21 all four of them to truly be balanced people Dr. Thrash. 00:08:40.24\00:08:44.19 Yes, and meditation is one of those that I like very much. 00:08:44.22\00:08:48.80 Meditation is a state of the mind in which a person allows 00:08:48.83\00:08:55.00 the mind to focus on one thing and you hold that one thing 00:08:55.03\00:08:59.74 in the mind for quite a while. 00:08:59.77\00:09:01.20 Now anyone who has studied brain physiology knows 00:09:01.23\00:09:05.84 a topic cannot be held at one spot in the brain for very long 00:09:05.87\00:09:12.39 we sort of wear out the chemicals to think 00:09:12.42\00:09:15.57 in that particular area, so then we need to transfer it 00:09:15.60\00:09:18.70 to another. 00:09:18.73\00:09:19.70 As it is transferred there we enrich it with things that come 00:09:19.71\00:09:23.19 from various parts of the brain that have been stored there 00:09:23.22\00:09:27.02 in other parts of the brain so that we bring the entire 00:09:27.05\00:09:30.68 brain, or we can bring the entire brain into focus as 00:09:30.71\00:09:35.67 as we engage in the meditation process. 00:09:35.70\00:09:38.91 When I meditate I like to take a Bible with me, 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.85 my very favorite to meditate is to take a Bible, go into 00:09:41.88\00:09:47.15 nature in some way, either by a stream, 00:09:47.18\00:09:49.57 that's my preferred place, or in the deep woods and there 00:09:49.60\00:09:54.71 sit on a log or a stump and read a passage in the Bible. 00:09:54.74\00:10:00.01 Let the mind savor that passage and think about it 00:10:00.04\00:10:04.32 from all angles, this angle, and that angle, another angle 00:10:04.35\00:10:09.60 and all the time bringing in various aspects of those stored 00:10:09.63\00:10:15.47 thoughts and stored information that I have through a 00:10:15.50\00:10:18.41 life time of experiences. 00:10:18.44\00:10:19.86 Now I'm very fortunate some times that I have someone else 00:10:19.89\00:10:24.71 who will go with me. 00:10:24.74\00:10:25.92 Perhaps a friend or a relative who will go with me to 00:10:25.95\00:10:30.56 my meditation spot and then that person also meditates 00:10:30.59\00:10:36.04 at the same time. 00:10:36.07\00:10:37.04 Somehow it enriches your meditation experience 00:10:37.05\00:10:40.79 if you have someone else with you who is also 00:10:40.82\00:10:43.35 reading the Bible, and will occasionally share 00:10:43.38\00:10:47.22 a passage, but not just keep up a constant chatter. 00:10:47.25\00:10:49.93 That's not the time when you are meditating, 00:10:49.96\00:10:52.22 it's not the time for a constant chatter. 00:10:52.25\00:10:54.54 Just a shared passage occasionally with a gem 00:10:54.57\00:10:59.07 of thought that the other person has that may be also for you, 00:10:59.10\00:11:02.66 something that is enriching to the mind. 00:11:02.69\00:11:05.70 Sometimes you will see something in nature that 00:11:05.73\00:11:10.22 you just want to share with someone, see a little animal 00:11:10.25\00:11:14.69 or an ant, or a mineral perhaps beside you that you just 00:11:14.72\00:11:19.20 like to share with someone. 00:11:19.23\00:11:21.52 So it is nice if you have someone with you in those times 00:11:21.55\00:11:26.28 in your meditation process. 00:11:26.31\00:11:27.61 Prayer is often a part of meditation, so you pray, 00:11:27.64\00:11:32.69 you read a passage, and you say dear Lord this is a 00:11:32.72\00:11:36.55 very high standard, how can I possibly meet this standard? 00:11:36.58\00:11:40.97 Then you talk with the Lord about that, then you meditate 00:11:41.00\00:11:46.60 on ways and the Holy Spirit brings to your mind ways 00:11:46.63\00:11:50.75 that you can accomplish what is mentioned there in the Bible, 00:11:50.78\00:11:54.67 or will enlarge to your understanding something 00:11:54.70\00:11:57.93 about the spiritual world where God lives, 00:11:57.96\00:12:01.98 or the work that God has given to us to do. 00:12:02.01\00:12:06.51 These are some things about meditation that I think will be 00:12:06.54\00:12:10.27 beneficial to you. 00:12:10.30\00:12:11.61 Rest is not all just meditation and lying down, 00:12:11.64\00:12:19.63 but some of it is, some of it is relaxation that might come 00:12:19.66\00:12:24.71 that one might have with a foot rub. 00:12:24.74\00:12:26.36 I have with me Valerie Schreiber who is one of my co-workers 00:12:26.39\00:12:30.98 at Uchee Pines, a Lifestyle Counselor and one of our 00:12:31.01\00:12:34.27 educators there and with her is my granddaughter Melissa 00:12:34.30\00:12:38.26 and Melissa is going to have a great good fortune 00:12:38.29\00:12:41.72 of having a foot rub. At our home foot massage 00:12:44.96\00:12:48.77 has been a big part of our life, in fact we were massaging 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.16 our children's feet when they were little and even though 00:12:52.19\00:12:55.18 they are in their 39 and 40 year old now, they still love 00:12:55.21\00:12:59.27 their feet to be massaged. 00:12:59.30\00:13:00.74 In fact we were just on a vacation together and 00:13:00.77\00:13:03.03 my daughter said, before you go home I have to have 00:13:03.06\00:13:05.75 my foot massage. 00:13:05.78\00:13:06.75 So I want to show you how you can massage feet 00:13:06.76\00:13:09.99 and relax the person. 00:13:10.02\00:13:12.16 We had a patient recently at Uchee Pines that was suffering 00:13:12.19\00:13:16.15 from drug withdraw, and she would be very nervous 00:13:16.18\00:13:19.71 and very agitated, so I went in and just started massaging 00:13:19.74\00:13:23.41 her feet and talking to her and before long she would 00:13:23.44\00:13:26.61 just start to clam right down. 00:13:26.64\00:13:27.76 So Melissa you come here and I'm going to show you 00:13:27.79\00:13:31.36 how we do it in our home. 00:13:31.39\00:13:32.77 First we take the feet and I kind of circle them like this 00:13:43.84\00:13:48.68 and then I circle them the other way, and then I push them up 00:13:48.71\00:13:53.19 and do a stretch on them, and stretch them back like this. 00:13:53.22\00:13:56.68 Many times I go up the leg and just massage up the leg, 00:13:56.71\00:14:01.56 it feels real good to them to massage up the leg like this, 00:14:01.59\00:14:06.30 you just kind of cupping it like this, just going up 00:14:06.33\00:14:10.86 and it feels sooo good. 00:14:10.89\00:14:15.53 The I just take my hands and I start doing little circles 00:14:15.56\00:14:20.01 down the feet... In fact many times 00:14:20.04\00:14:23.39 I just go down the feet this way, and then do the toes, 00:14:23.42\00:14:27.96 the toes somehow when you massage on the toes, 00:14:27.99\00:14:31.67 and you kind of circle them around and massage around them, 00:14:31.70\00:14:36.16 it relaxes them, your body somehow to massage the toes 00:14:36.19\00:14:42.07 it just feels good and kind of relaxes you a lot better. 00:14:42.10\00:14:45.92 So I circle down the toes, circle them, go across them 00:14:45.95\00:14:50.85 like this, many times I just shift hands and I go right down 00:14:50.88\00:14:56.17 the feet just like this, and massage. 00:14:56.20\00:15:00.80 Then you get underneath the feet, and underneath the feet, 00:15:00.83\00:15:07.16 again you would take your thumb and you do circles 00:15:07.19\00:15:11.21 like this, and you just circle all around like this. 00:15:11.24\00:15:16.22 Some people can be ticklish, and if they are ticklish 00:15:16.25\00:15:22.57 then you would do a flat move. 00:15:22.60\00:15:24.66 A flat move would be just like this, you would take your hand 00:15:24.69\00:15:28.32 and you would go down the feet like this and down like this, 00:15:28.35\00:15:33.84 and across. 00:15:33.87\00:15:37.02 Or you can take your fist like this and go right down 00:15:37.05\00:15:41.95 just like this, and that can also relax them depending upon 00:15:41.98\00:15:47.38 whether they are ticklish or not. 00:15:47.41\00:15:49.68 Otherwise you just start kneading the feet 00:15:49.71\00:15:52.83 with your fingers, moving them up like this and go across 00:15:52.86\00:16:00.05 this way, and I get way over here in the arch, 00:16:00.08\00:16:05.44 and work the arch real good, then I pick the leg up 00:16:05.47\00:16:11.80 and I do the heel, I massage all around the heel and turn it 00:16:11.83\00:16:16.94 a little bit and massage. 00:16:16.97\00:16:17.94 Oh, it feels so good! Some people like it firm 00:16:17.97\00:16:24.17 and some people like it more tender, so you can do more 00:16:24.20\00:16:27.74 of a soothing stroke. 00:16:27.77\00:16:29.21 I used to tickle my mom's feet a lot when she was 00:16:29.24\00:16:32.62 feeling bad, and I would just tickle them and do just like 00:16:32.65\00:16:36.81 this with them, and I would tickle up her legs and 00:16:36.84\00:16:40.59 it would just relax her and put her right to sleep. 00:16:40.62\00:16:43.56 So you can do this in various ways, no set method, 00:16:43.59\00:16:47.65 just get in there and use your hands and work on the feet 00:16:47.68\00:16:50.75 and you will get results, and see the person calm right down 00:16:50.78\00:16:54.75 and go right to sleep. 00:16:54.78\00:16:55.83 Are you ready to go to sleep Melissa? 00:16:55.86\00:16:57.06 I don't know if I can talk about sleep right after seeing 00:17:05.81\00:17:08.44 that very nice relaxing massage. 00:17:08.47\00:17:10.34 Wouldn't that make you want to go to sleep? 00:17:10.37\00:17:12.57 Let me talk with you just a little bit about sleep. 00:17:12.60\00:17:17.12 Sleep is sort of a mystical thing and we don't know 00:17:17.15\00:17:22.70 exactly what sleep is, we just know this 00:17:22.73\00:17:25.49 that it is relaxing, that it is refreshing both to body 00:17:25.52\00:17:29.10 and to mind, it is also relaxing to the spirit. 00:17:29.13\00:17:32.21 If you have something that is really weighting down on you 00:17:32.24\00:17:35.50 and you are able to make a good sleep time, then you can 00:17:35.53\00:17:39.40 awaken being very refreshed. 00:17:39.43\00:17:41.34 There is a kind of rest that we want to understand 00:17:41.37\00:17:46.09 better than we do, and that is the Sabbath rest. 00:17:46.12\00:17:50.22 How to observe this wonderful day, that we might receive the 00:17:50.25\00:17:54.24 blessings from it. 00:17:54.27\00:17:55.54 I think one of the best reasons, maybe the biggest reason 00:17:55.57\00:18:00.20 to obey beyond that of wanting to please our Heavenly Father 00:18:00.23\00:18:04.51 is to want to receive the blessing that He has put it that 00:18:04.54\00:18:09.01 Commandment for us. So when He says "Remember" 00:18:09.04\00:18:11.93 my Sabbath Day, I want to remember it in the very way 00:18:11.96\00:18:16.41 that He says "Remember it," knowing that He knows best 00:18:16.44\00:18:21.05 what that blessing is. Don Miller would you talk 00:18:21.08\00:18:23.92 with us some about the Sabbath rest? 00:18:23.95\00:18:26.40 The Sabbath rest is a great gift that God has given to man. 00:18:26.43\00:18:30.00 We look back at creation week, God was very busy that 00:18:30.03\00:18:33.36 first week, He made all the things in the universe 00:18:33.39\00:18:36.22 that first week, and on the sixth day He made man, 00:18:36.25\00:18:39.33 the crowning act of His creation. 00:18:39.36\00:18:41.22 The best gift that he could give to man was the Sabbath 00:18:41.25\00:18:44.88 the very first day, man's first full day was the Sabbath day 00:18:44.91\00:18:49.34 and he could spend that day alone with God. 00:18:49.37\00:18:52.51 What a special blessing, and God still wants man to have 00:18:52.54\00:18:56.11 that experience with Him. 00:18:56.14\00:18:57.48 We realize that the year is based on how long it takes 00:18:57.51\00:19:00.96 for the earth to go around the sun, the month 00:19:00.99\00:19:03.56 is based upon how long the moon to go around the earth. 00:19:03.59\00:19:06.81 The day is based upon how long it takes the earth to go around 00:19:06.84\00:19:10.02 on it's axis, but what's the week based on? 00:19:10.05\00:19:15.21 The week is based on creation. 00:19:15.24\00:19:17.32 We say that there is nothing astronomical about that, 00:19:17.35\00:19:20.13 there is nothing physical about that but science has found 00:19:20.16\00:19:24.18 that there is a seven-day cycle in nature, 00:19:24.21\00:19:27.73 there is a seven-day cycle in man. 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.22 We know about the 28 day cycle, the eighteen month cycle, 00:19:29.25\00:19:32.64 there are many hair cycles that we have, but there is 00:19:32.67\00:19:35.17 a number of studies a Dr. Hallberg from 00:19:35.20\00:19:38.23 The University of Minnesota in charge of the chronobiology lab 00:19:38.26\00:19:43.02 has studied with a number or scientists around the world 00:19:43.05\00:19:45.46 and he said that there is a Circaseptan Rhythm, a seven day 00:19:45.49\00:19:50.75 Circadian rhythm as we can call it. 00:19:50.78\00:19:53.35 Three studies that they have found I want to just mention 00:19:53.38\00:19:56.68 very briefly here. 00:19:56.71\00:19:57.68 They had one study, they had a man, they place him in a cave 00:19:57.71\00:20:03.07 for a number of months so the nothing was affecting 00:20:03.10\00:20:06.86 his internal clock. 00:20:06.89\00:20:09.40 Nothing was around him to do anything stressful. 00:20:09.43\00:20:12.94 The sun didn't come up, the sun didn't go down, 00:20:12.97\00:20:15.91 he was just monitored as far as his heart rate, 00:20:15.94\00:20:18.78 after a number of months they found that his heart followed 00:20:18.81\00:20:22.45 a seven-day cycle. 00:20:22.48\00:20:23.82 They took another man for 15 years, a healthy man, 00:20:23.85\00:20:27.63 and they measured the stress hormones in his urine. 00:20:27.66\00:20:31.51 Every day they measured those hormones, 00:20:31.54\00:20:33.58 and after a 15 year period they found that there was a 00:20:33.61\00:20:36.46 definite pattern in the stress hormones every seven days. 00:20:36.49\00:20:40.63 They took a group of 70 young men who had their wisdom teeth 00:20:40.66\00:20:44.56 pulled, they measured their faces and their jaws 00:20:44.59\00:20:48.54 and you would expect that at first there was swelling 00:20:48.57\00:20:51.60 and slowly the swelling would go down. 00:20:51.63\00:20:53.49 But they found that every seventh day, for the first two 00:20:53.52\00:20:56.79 cycles swelling would increase seven days and at 14 days. 00:20:56.82\00:21:01.79 They find that people who have kidney transplants, 00:21:01.82\00:21:05.12 their biggest crisis day is the seventh day, 00:21:05.15\00:21:08.87 the second biggest crisis day is seven days later, 00:21:08.90\00:21:13.01 that means that we do have a seven day rhythm that we follow. 00:21:13.04\00:21:16.47 Now away from that they have found in nature, certain insects 00:21:16.50\00:21:21.07 and animals that not only keep a seven day cycle, 00:21:21.10\00:21:23.87 they keep the seventh day cycle on the Sabbath, 00:21:23.90\00:21:28.47 The seventh-day Sabbath, the Biblical Sabbath. 00:21:28.50\00:21:31.40 Certain insects and animals do no work, there is a 00:21:31.43\00:21:34.68 certain type of bee that on the Sabbath doesn't make honey, 00:21:34.71\00:21:38.70 doesn't go out there and gather pollen, it rests 00:21:38.73\00:21:41.27 on the Sabbath day. 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.38 I believe that God has in nature, examples 00:21:42.41\00:21:45.59 for us to follow. God gave us the Sabbath 00:21:45.62\00:21:48.39 as a rest, a day in which we spend that special time 00:21:48.42\00:21:51.91 with Him. 00:21:51.94\00:21:52.91 I can't even imagine Adam on that first Sabbath day 00:21:52.92\00:21:55.72 saying ughh! I am going to do some lay activities. 00:21:55.75\00:21:58.52 No! I think he spent that whole day alone with God 00:21:58.55\00:22:02.23 from as soon as the sun went down until 00:22:02.26\00:22:04.95 that sun went down at the end of the Sabbath. 00:22:04.98\00:22:07.16 He spent special hours, special time with the father 00:22:07.19\00:22:11.37 and I think that's exactly, no, I don't think, I know 00:22:11.40\00:22:14.44 that is exactly what God wants for us to do now. 00:22:14.47\00:22:16.86 He gave us the Sabbath as a gift, He said the Sabbath 00:22:16.89\00:22:20.22 was made for man, not man for the Sabbath 00:22:20.25\00:22:22.71 and He says I want to talk with you this day. 00:22:22.74\00:22:25.19 I believe on the Sabbath day God has special blessings 00:22:25.22\00:22:29.51 in store, I believe that He wants to pour out His richest 00:22:29.54\00:22:32.96 blessings, as a matter of fact I believe that on the 00:22:32.99\00:22:35.21 Sabbath day God is more busy than any other day of the week, 00:22:35.24\00:22:38.36 because it's on that day that we spend more time talking 00:22:38.39\00:22:41.61 with Him. 00:22:41.64\00:22:42.61 More time requesting things of Him, and on this day 00:22:42.62\00:22:46.06 God is always trying to show us that He loves us with an 00:22:46.09\00:22:49.74 everlasting love, so if you have not yet experienced 00:22:49.77\00:22:53.08 the Sabbath rest I think you should. 00:22:53.11\00:22:55.36 A few years ago there was a couple at Uchee Pines, 00:22:55.39\00:22:59.03 that came to Uchee Pines, they were sort of counseling 00:22:59.06\00:23:02.51 with me about some marital problems and I don't know 00:23:02.54\00:23:05.14 anything about marital problems so I went to talk to Dr. Thrash 00:23:05.17\00:23:08.32 and I said Dr. Thrash, they've got these problems 00:23:08.35\00:23:11.19 what should I do? 00:23:11.22\00:23:12.19 She said ask them how they observe the Sabbath? 00:23:12.20\00:23:16.01 I believe just like flying in an airplane... 00:23:16.04\00:23:19.42 I'm a pilot and if your plane goes into a spring, 00:23:19.45\00:23:21.69 they say the best thing to do is to let go and it will 00:23:21.72\00:23:25.00 right itself. 00:23:25.03\00:23:26.41 I believe that if our lives are out of control, let go on the 00:23:26.44\00:23:30.25 Sabbath and let God hold you that whole Sabbath day 00:23:30.28\00:23:33.84 and I think you are going to find some real rest 00:23:33.87\00:23:36.29 and some real healing Dr. Thrash. 00:23:36.32\00:23:38.53 Yes! It's a more important item than we have understood. 00:23:38.56\00:23:42.50 Now we cannot exhaust the whole topic of rest but I have asked 00:23:42.53\00:23:46.91 John Champen if he will make a discussion for you 00:23:46.94\00:23:50.53 of some of his observations of the topic of rest. 00:23:50.56\00:23:54.24 This is John Champen who is one of my co-workers 00:23:54.27\00:23:57.13 at Uchee Pines, a Lifestyle Counselor and an Educator there 00:23:57.16\00:24:02.78 and works in Administration also, so at this time 00:24:02.81\00:24:07.20 John Champen. 00:24:07.23\00:24:08.21 One of the most interesting aspects of rest 00:24:08.24\00:24:11.85 that I have found is that we need to be able to give 00:24:11.88\00:24:14.82 our guilt away. 00:24:14.85\00:24:15.82 People are not able to rest at night or during the day 00:24:15.83\00:24:19.45 because they feel guilty, their minds are not at ease, 00:24:19.48\00:24:23.24 their conscience bother them, they try to push these things 00:24:23.27\00:24:25.87 to the side, or they try to get a friend, or someone else 00:24:25.90\00:24:28.96 to sit down and share these things with. 00:24:28.99\00:24:31.79 When I finished junior high school my mother wrote 00:24:31.82\00:24:36.85 in my autograph book these words: "What's in your heart 00:24:36.88\00:24:41.99 let no one know, nor to your friends your secrets show. 00:24:42.02\00:24:46.65 But when your friends become your foe, then all your secrets 00:24:46.68\00:24:51.03 they shall know. " There is something to that, 00:24:51.06\00:24:54.44 God wants you to bring these things to Him, 00:24:54.47\00:24:56.74 bring your problems to Him, bring your concerns to Him, 00:24:56.77\00:24:59.79 and give your guilt away. 00:24:59.82\00:25:01.98 In a little book entitled Steps To Christ, 00:25:02.01\00:25:04.85 the chapter entitled Give Your Guilt Away, 00:25:04.88\00:25:07.52 the rest that we can have depends quite a bit upon 00:25:07.55\00:25:12.59 giving our guilt away. 00:25:12.62\00:25:13.85 Let the Lord take those things that are bothering you, 00:25:13.88\00:25:17.21 those thing that are not right in your life, and you know 00:25:17.24\00:25:20.27 they are not right, let Him take them and you can enter 00:25:20.30\00:25:23.24 into the Sabbath rest and enjoy all the rest 00:25:23.27\00:25:25.78 that God has for you Dr. Thrash. 00:25:25.81\00:25:27.47 Yes! Just as with all other activities of life, 00:25:27.50\00:25:32.10 rest can be over done, we can rest so much that the body 00:25:32.13\00:25:38.12 begins to be sick in some way, or to degenerate in some way, 00:25:38.15\00:25:43.45 and we can also recognize that as we rest to much the mind 00:25:43.48\00:25:48.16 begins to malfunction. 00:25:48.19\00:25:50.48 People who sleep to much and have to much leisure time 00:25:50.51\00:25:55.08 they often have a superficiality of their character 00:25:55.11\00:25:59.99 and their personalities begin to express themselves 00:26:00.07\00:26:03.55 in a sort of giddiness, and also some people who are not 00:26:03.58\00:26:08.08 so disposed as others in their mental expression, 00:26:08.11\00:26:11.66 others may get a depression from too much rest. 00:26:11.69\00:26:15.81 Also resting to much or sleeping to much is actually a sign 00:26:15.85\00:26:20.72 or depression, if a person tells you they sleep all day 00:26:20.75\00:26:24.98 then they can go to bed and sleep all night, the next day 00:26:25.01\00:26:27.98 they can do the same thing and just get up to eat 00:26:28.01\00:26:30.71 and go to the bathroom, these individuals may be 00:26:30.74\00:26:33.63 sick with depression. 00:26:33.66\00:26:34.85 If they are, there is a certain special program that you should 00:26:34.88\00:26:39.01 give to them, and one is to tell them to go to bed 00:26:39.04\00:26:41.91 two hours earlier than they put their bed time. 00:26:41.94\00:26:45.65 Then eight hours later they must get up, then they put themselves 00:26:45.68\00:26:49.14 in a very brightly lighted room and stay there until 00:26:49.17\00:26:52.93 the sun rises. 00:26:52.96\00:26:53.94 When the sun rises they should get out into the sunshine 00:26:53.97\00:26:56.92 and there have their circadian rhythm sort of re-set, 00:26:56.95\00:27:02.89 so this can be a help to the person who has depression 00:27:02.92\00:27:06.89 to know that to much sleeping can also be a problem, 00:27:06.92\00:27:10.60 then people can find that their rest, relaxation, their sleep 00:27:10.63\00:27:15.47 is robbed by such things as coffee, tea, colas, chocolate, 00:27:15.50\00:27:22.15 even highly spiced food can rob people of their sleep. 00:27:22.18\00:27:26.85 Recognizing these things can help the person who has 00:27:26.88\00:27:31.05 a problem sleeping to know how to have a diet that 00:27:31.08\00:27:34.39 will cooperate with them in making certain that they 00:27:34.42\00:27:39.42 have the best opportunity for rest and sleep. 00:27:39.45\00:27:42.56 Now we hope that these things that we presented to you 00:27:42.59\00:27:47.31 will be for you a help in your total obedience to the 00:27:47.34\00:27:54.28 eight natural laws of health. 00:27:54.31\00:27:55.28
