times people only ate two meals a day. 00:00:49.82\00:00:54.01 Why was that? 00:00:54.04\00:00:55.73 Well, partly because they were rural people, and as many 00:00:55.76\00:01:00.38 rural people do even today, they get up in the morning 00:01:00.41\00:01:03.51 at an early hour, they go out and do some work in the fields 00:01:03.54\00:01:06.77 then they come back in and have a rather late breakfast, 00:01:06.80\00:01:10.33 maybe eight or nine o'clock. 00:01:10.36\00:01:12.91 Then they go back to the fields and work until 3:00 or 2:00 00:01:12.94\00:01:17.33 in the afternoon, then they have their lunch, 00:01:17.36\00:01:19.95 what would be a late lunch, and then if they had supper 00:01:19.98\00:01:23.41 at all, it will be something like milk and bread, 00:01:23.44\00:01:26.79 or juice and bread, it's not a big meal in the evenings. 00:01:26.82\00:01:31.70 It's essentially two meals and a small snack in the evening 00:01:31.73\00:01:35.13 even though they are hard farm workers. 00:01:35.16\00:01:37.97 So the meal pattern needs to be studied, we need find out 00:01:38.00\00:01:41.33 whether that's a good meal pattern, two meals a day, 00:01:41.36\00:01:43.65 or two meals and a snack, or three meals or four meals. 00:01:43.68\00:01:47.86 We need to study that and find out what it is that 00:01:47.89\00:01:50.98 science tells us concerning our meal pattern, we also need to 00:01:51.01\00:01:56.06 study what our own experience can be, and so to help us 00:01:56.09\00:02:01.07 to delve into some of these things I have John Champen 00:02:01.10\00:02:03.43 with me, who is a Health Educator at Uchee Pines 00:02:03.46\00:02:06.65 in administration there, so he is going to talk with some about 00:02:06.68\00:02:12.32 experiences with the two meal plan. 00:02:18.33\00:02:22.26 breakfast around 7 o'clock in the morning, 00:02:22.29\00:02:24.50 and at 9 o'clock I would have something, and then at 00:02:24.53\00:02:27.53 about noon I had my second big meal, and then at 3 o'clock 00:02:27.56\00:02:31.52 in the afternoon I would have a little snack, then about 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.66 5:30 or 6 in the evening there would be supper, and then 00:02:34.69\00:02:38.51 sometimes a little bit more on my way to bed in the 00:02:38.54\00:02:40.79 evening, and then if I didn't feel really well, I would have 00:02:40.82\00:02:44.59 a little something on my way from the bathroom at night 00:02:44.62\00:02:47.68 at around 1 o'clock in the morning. 00:02:47.71\00:02:49.11 I was eating all the time! 00:02:49.14\00:02:51.06 I didn't feel very good! 00:02:51.09\00:02:53.09 I felt tired all the time, I felt irritable much of the time, 00:02:53.12\00:02:57.92 my wife used to wonder, what is wrong with you? 00:02:57.95\00:03:00.11 Well I just nibbled and ate like a lot of people do perhaps. 00:03:00.14\00:03:05.95 Well that's what I did, then about 27-28 years ago 00:03:05.98\00:03:10.61 I began to learn of a new way. 00:03:10.64\00:03:13.29 Two meal plan, I didn't know how you could possibly live 00:03:13.32\00:03:16.35 on two meals, I was just barely making it on six and seven. 00:03:16.38\00:03:20.27 But I read the material and began to understand some of 00:03:20.30\00:03:24.50 the principles there, and began to try to put it together 00:03:24.53\00:03:27.97 personally. 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.18 My wife and I started to try to do this, well how do you 00:03:29.21\00:03:34.05 do it, how do you put a two meal plan together where you 00:03:34.08\00:03:37.89 get all of the nutrition and vitamins that you need 00:03:37.92\00:03:40.74 and have the health that you need, and so forth. 00:03:40.77\00:03:44.57 Well, we tried it, we tried to do it, first of all 00:03:44.60\00:03:49.75 we tried an early morning meal... 00:03:49.78\00:03:52.46 I used to go to work, I would get up and have breakfast 00:03:52.49\00:03:55.45 about 5:30 in the morning, and I said let's have breakfast 00:03:55.48\00:03:59.38 at 5:30, and then when I come in the evening, 00:03:59.41\00:04:01.59 we will have the second meal, shall we try that. 00:04:01.62\00:04:03.98 It didn't work very well, it was a long time between 00:04:04.01\00:04:08.10 the first meal and the second meal it's a very long time 00:04:08.13\00:04:10.87 and we were very gaseous and of course we're going to bed 00:04:10.90\00:04:16.58 and still had a lot of food undigested. 00:04:16.61\00:04:20.05 That didn't work out well, we finally gradually shifted it 00:04:20.08\00:04:23.58 to where it is today, now we have a plan that works 00:04:23.61\00:04:26.92 very well for us, we have our breakfast at 6:30 in the morning 00:04:26.95\00:04:31.17 and then we have our next meal at 1:30 in the afternoon 00:04:31.20\00:04:34.70 and the body rests for about almost 18 hours a day 00:04:34.73\00:04:40.21 my stomach is resting after it finishes its work, 00:04:40.24\00:04:43.82 so it rests and I rest, and my wife rests. 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.82 There are many advantages to that, my wife used to fix 00:04:47.85\00:04:51.76 three meals a day, cook three meals a day, 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.67 seven days a week, that's 21 meals. 00:04:54.70\00:04:57.62 Today she cooks about four or five meals, and that's all 00:04:57.65\00:05:02.39 that's required, the rest things are prepared 00:05:02.42\00:05:04.81 we learn how to do things much more simply, 00:05:04.84\00:05:07.46 and there are a lot of advantages to that, 00:05:07.49\00:05:09.72 to the two meal plan. 00:05:09.75\00:05:12.06 It is ideal for adults, it turns out to be also ideal 00:05:12.09\00:05:16.70 for children to, once they reach a certain age, 00:05:16.73\00:05:19.11 I believe Dr. Thrash will be talking more about that too. 00:05:19.14\00:05:22.10 I would like to talk about some of the advantages of 00:05:22.13\00:05:27.11 the two meal plan: 00:05:27.14\00:05:28.86 Skipping supper can save costs, it can save as much 00:05:28.89\00:05:33.34 as one third of your grocery bill, grocery bills are high, 00:05:33.37\00:05:36.74 and as you know, they are only going one way, 00:05:36.77\00:05:38.55 they are going higher and higher, and that can put 00:05:38.58\00:05:41.26 a little bit of jingle into your pocket, one third savings. 00:05:41.29\00:05:44.28 Also skipping supper gives you some extra time, that you don't 00:05:44.31\00:05:51.00 have to prepare this meal, time that you can spend 00:05:51.03\00:05:55.18 with your family, time that you can spend on an extra 00:05:55.21\00:05:57.48 project, time that you could spend doing something 00:05:57.51\00:05:59.88 that you need to do or like to do. 00:05:59.91\00:06:02.31 A letter that you need to write, a meditation or whatever, 00:06:02.34\00:06:05.52 you can do that, you have that extra time. 00:06:05.55\00:06:09.60 It also can cut your kitchen chores, less dishes to wash 00:06:09.63\00:06:15.52 and put away, less cooking to prepare, that's the 00:06:15.55\00:06:20.09 real benefit, I think the Madame would like that if 00:06:20.12\00:06:22.46 your husband would insist on a two meal plan, 00:06:22.49\00:06:25.08 It would be a real benefit to them. 00:06:25.11\00:06:27.48 The two meal plan helps regulate the body weight, 00:06:27.51\00:06:31.19 over weight people usually loose weight, and those that 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.71 are underweight gain weight. 00:06:33.74\00:06:35.58 Now that's interesting for myself, I actually weigh about 00:06:35.61\00:06:38.82 five pounds more now on the two meal plan, than I weighed 00:06:38.85\00:06:43.96 on my six meal plan, now you try to figure that out. 00:06:43.99\00:06:48.43 We saved a lot of money as a result of that too. 00:06:48.46\00:06:51.24 Without supper to burden the stomach, the mind is alert 00:06:51.27\00:06:55.13 for evening worship, for socialization, 00:06:55.16\00:06:57.65 for anything like that, that you would like to do. 00:06:57.68\00:07:00.32 The mind is clear, it's an old saying that if your stomach 00:07:00.35\00:07:03.63 is operating you mind is slowing down and not running at all 00:07:03.66\00:07:07.05 very well. 00:07:07.08\00:07:08.35 So you have time to think, you have better thoughts and 00:07:08.38\00:07:11.92 you are able to do much more with the thinking processes. 00:07:11.95\00:07:16.59 With an unburdened stomach which is what you have because the 00:07:16.62\00:07:22.17 the second meal is early enough in the day so that you can 00:07:22.20\00:07:27.00 go to bed with an empty stomach, I know it sounds like a crime. 00:07:27.03\00:07:30.02 I've heard it so many times, you wouldn't want to send 00:07:30.05\00:07:32.48 a child to bed on an empty stomach, would you? 00:07:32.51\00:07:35.23 Yes! That is exactly what you would like to do. 00:07:35.26\00:07:37.63 When you go to bed at night you would like to have your 00:07:37.66\00:07:40.10 stomach finished so that you are resting, and your stomach 00:07:40.13\00:07:43.13 is resting, and every time that your little valve is opening 00:07:43.16\00:07:47.59 in your stomach and you are turning back and forth 00:07:47.62\00:07:50.41 you don't have that experience, you are resting, 00:07:50.44\00:07:53.02 your body is resting, and you feel a lot better. 00:07:53.05\00:07:55.57 When the digestive system is at rest, the entire body rests 00:07:55.60\00:08:01.20 better, less sleep is needed, and the sleep is more peaceful, 00:08:01.23\00:08:06.41 more restful, you get more out of it. 00:08:06.44\00:08:09.36 That's a wonderful benefit right there, you do not wake up 00:08:09.39\00:08:12.28 groggy in the morning. 00:08:12.31\00:08:13.50 Without food in the stomach to draw the blood away from 00:08:13.53\00:08:17.03 the skin, the body can sleep comfortably in a cooler room 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.81 with fresh air. 00:08:19.84\00:08:21.52 That's a real benefit also, you have fewer problems with 00:08:21.55\00:08:25.58 a chilly night. 00:08:25.61\00:08:26.58 In the morning you don't wake up with bad breath and eyes 00:08:26.59\00:08:33.32 that are red and your mind is alert, and you don't have those 00:08:33.35\00:08:37.00 heavy bags under the eyes, and you don't need that makeup. 00:08:37.03\00:08:41.68 When you wake up in the morning the window has been opened, 00:08:41.71\00:08:46.00 and you are just refreshed, you are ready for whatever the next 00:08:46.03\00:08:49.36 day offers, and that's good, it gives you a lot of energy. 00:08:49.39\00:08:54.22 The stomach instead of having that all gone feeling 00:08:54.25\00:08:57.23 from exhaustion, feels at peace, no gnawing beast in the stomach. 00:08:57.26\00:09:03.65 Regularity which the two meal plan offers to us, 00:09:03.68\00:09:08.87 regularity allows the body system to move very smoothly. 00:09:08.90\00:09:14.37 All of nature is on a system, the sun rises on time, 00:09:14.40\00:09:18.33 and goes down at a certain time, it's all very predictable, 00:09:18.36\00:09:21.15 and when you are on a two meal plan and you stick 00:09:21.18\00:09:24.41 with the proper times of eating, which ever times 00:09:24.44\00:09:27.15 you have selected, you find that your digestive juices flow 00:09:27.18\00:09:31.52 at a certain time, you are ready for whatever comes your way. 00:09:31.55\00:09:35.71 When breakfast time comes your stomach is ready... 00:09:35.74\00:09:40.15 I notice in the morning, we have breakfast at 6:30, 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.88 at 6:00 in the morning, when the table is being set, 00:09:42.91\00:09:47.40 very interesting, there is no sensation of hunger 00:09:47.43\00:09:52.08 what-so-ever. 00:09:52.11\00:09:53.08 I was telling my wife the other day, you know 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.61 Louise, I don't feel hungry at all, she says well I don't 00:09:55.64\00:09:58.82 either, at 6:30 when it's time for us to eat, we began to feel 00:09:58.85\00:10:05.55 things happening within, and we are ready for the meal 00:10:05.58\00:10:07.90 and when you start eating your meal, we eat hardily, 00:10:07.93\00:10:10.02 and we eat gratefully, we are very thankful for what 00:10:10.05\00:10:13.43 the Lord has provided, and then we are off to our work. 00:10:13.46\00:10:17.89 It's a real blessing not to have a sense of hunger 00:10:17.92\00:10:22.36 in between meals, where we used to feel all the time 00:10:22.39\00:10:25.60 because we were so irregular in our eating. 00:10:25.63\00:10:27.73 Now we don't worry about that at all, we don't even think 00:10:27.76\00:10:30.81 about food until it's time for us to eat. 00:10:30.84\00:10:33.59 We found that those on a two meal plan have less temptation 00:10:33.62\00:10:39.65 to eat in between meals and can comfortably wait until 00:10:39.68\00:10:42.79 mid afternoon for the second meal, and an evening snack 00:10:42.82\00:10:47.63 we don't usually need, we rarely ever have an evening snack. 00:10:47.66\00:10:51.59 You find also that when you are on a two meal plan 00:10:51.87\00:10:58.37 it's a lot easier to deal with irregularities, if you have to 00:10:58.40\00:11:01.39 miss a meal because of traveling or it's inconvenient for 00:11:01.42\00:11:04.63 whatever reasoning, it's no problem, if you need to fast 00:11:04.66\00:11:08.06 for a meal or a day or so, it's no problem. 00:11:08.09\00:11:11.33 It's very interesting, if you are going to fast, 00:11:11.36\00:11:14.65 at the regular time for your eating, you feel a little bit 00:11:14.68\00:11:18.65 of hunger, if you don't take it at that time during that meal 00:11:18.68\00:11:22.05 period, after that, the hunger is gone, you have no more 00:11:22.08\00:11:25.51 sensation of it until it's time for the regular next meal. 00:11:25.54\00:11:29.00 That's a blessing, the body can become as regulated as all 00:11:29.03\00:11:33.48 of nature can, and that's what we are talking about. 00:11:33.51\00:11:36.42 Finally getting our bodies back in harmony with nature. 00:11:36.45\00:11:39.25 What is best for us, a clean rested stomach is the 00:11:39.28\00:11:43.82 prerequisite to having good blood. 00:11:43.85\00:11:46.46 We are told that perfect health requires perfect circulation, 00:11:46.49\00:11:50.29 well it also is important what is being circulated, 00:11:50.32\00:11:53.46 good clean blood is possible there with the regularity. 00:11:53.49\00:12:01.36 With the stomach enjoying longer periods of rest 00:12:01.39\00:12:04.66 the danger of ulcers is lessened and if you have an ulcer it's 00:12:04.69\00:12:10.36 not irritated quite as much because of these untimely meals 00:12:10.39\00:12:15.02 that you would be taking, snacking and what not. 00:12:15.05\00:12:17.39 Even in pregnant ladies, we find that pregnant ladies 00:12:17.42\00:12:21.43 that are on a two meal plan, they have more milk, in fact 00:12:21.46\00:12:25.52 that it's a real blessing for them. 00:12:25.55\00:12:28.03 Some have gone on a two meal plan, had a nice flow of 00:12:28.06\00:12:31.50 milk supply, gone off the two meal plan, gone back 00:12:31.53\00:12:34.44 to the third meal and their milk stopped, and didn't return 00:12:34.47\00:12:38.24 again until they went back to the two meal plan. 00:12:38.27\00:12:40.64 Dr. Thrash, I think there is something to the two meal plan, 00:12:40.68\00:12:43.71 what do you say? - Oh yes! 00:12:43.75\00:12:44.79 It's a physiologic thing, and I've been very pleased to study 00:12:44.82\00:12:49.10 about the two meal plan. 00:12:49.13\00:12:51.15 The year was 1960 when I first became interested in this, 00:12:51.18\00:12:55.42 I was teaching at Columbus University at that time, 00:12:55.45\00:12:58.80 Anatomy and Physiology, which at that time was a 00:12:58.83\00:13:02.04 required course for all of the graduates from the 00:13:02.07\00:13:04.81 university system. 00:13:04.84\00:13:06.00 So I had a lot of students and enjoyed teaching the class 00:13:06.03\00:13:10.70 and one of the things that I had I had while I was 00:13:10.73\00:13:15.17 presenting the Anatomy and Physiology the gastrointestinal 00:13:15.20\00:13:19.38 tract was the various phases of digestion. 00:13:19.41\00:13:23.10 I learned from studying this, and getting prepared to teach 00:13:23.13\00:13:27.40 my class, that the best plan for human beings is a 00:13:27.43\00:13:32.66 two meal pattern, that we do best on that kind of thing. 00:13:32.69\00:13:36.20 So as I began to study about this I thought, 00:13:36.48\00:13:40.54 I should try to put this into effect in my own life, 00:13:40.57\00:13:44.37 and that's something that I recommend for you too. 00:13:44.40\00:13:46.50 Once you learn something, something that is beneficial 00:13:46.53\00:13:49.71 start immediately making plans, you may not make an 00:13:49.74\00:13:53.11 instantaneous change, but you should start immediately 00:13:53.14\00:13:56.10 to making plans for that change, and as soon as it is feasible 00:13:56.13\00:14:00.16 you begin to slide into it. 00:14:00.19\00:14:02.43 Well that's what we began to do in our own home, 00:14:02.46\00:14:05.17 and we had quite an experience with changing from a 00:14:05.20\00:14:11.32 three meal plan to a two meal plan, that experience being 00:14:11.35\00:14:15.42 extreme hunger during that time for a third meal. 00:14:15.45\00:14:19.71 It just seemed that the appetite was the very best at that time 00:14:19.74\00:14:23.35 that it ever could possibly be. 00:14:23.38\00:14:25.31 So I made a New Year's Resolution on January 1st, 00:14:25.34\00:14:29.49 I was going to eat nothing else in the evening, and for 00:14:29.52\00:14:33.14 three months, until the first day of April, 00:14:33.17\00:14:36.58 I struggled with that every day, I could think about 00:14:36.61\00:14:41.91 how much food I had in certain places in the refrigerator 00:14:41.94\00:14:46.29 and how nice it would be to eat that food. 00:14:46.32\00:14:49.42 But by careful discipline and training and protecting myself 00:14:49.45\00:14:54.37 from having to think about or having to see that food. 00:14:54.40\00:14:56.77 I came to the place where I did not have to eat that food 00:14:56.80\00:15:00.75 so about three months is what it took and now it never 00:15:00.78\00:15:04.82 crosses my mind, it never enters my head to eat 00:15:04.85\00:15:08.30 in the evening, I have really no appetite for evening food. 00:15:08.33\00:15:11.81 Yet I eat a hardy breakfast and a hardy lunch, 00:15:11.84\00:15:15.62 not so hardy as breakfast, and then I have no appetite 00:15:15.65\00:15:19.30 no desire to eat from then on. 00:15:19.33\00:15:21.05 I can be around other people who are eating and I'm 00:15:21.08\00:15:23.86 perfectly fine, I have no desire to eat. 00:15:23.89\00:15:27.17 Now there are some other parts of the two meal plan 00:15:27.20\00:15:30.16 and for that John Champen is going to talk with you some 00:15:30.19\00:15:34.60 more about the two meal plan. 00:15:34.63\00:15:36.83 John Champen! 00:15:36.86\00:15:37.83 I would like to share a few ideas here about instruction 00:15:37.84\00:15:41.29 on eating. 00:15:41.32\00:15:42.29 Some counselors eat largely fruits and vegetables prepared 00:15:42.30\00:15:46.96 in a natural and tasty way, it's best also if the two are 00:15:46.99\00:15:52.05 separated, we in our home we have a vegetable meal, 00:15:52.08\00:15:56.41 basically vegetables and grains and nuts and seeds, 00:15:56.44\00:16:01.80 and things like that for one meal. 00:16:01.83\00:16:03.42 Then fruits at another meal, primarily fruits and grains 00:16:03.45\00:16:06.42 and nuts and so forth, or seeds, and we find that it 00:16:06.45\00:16:10.45 works best that way. 00:16:10.48\00:16:11.64 Because both of these two groups of foods require different 00:16:11.67\00:16:15.95 enzymes to digest, and it's best that they are digested 00:16:15.98\00:16:20.90 separately. 00:16:20.93\00:16:21.90 Number two is that you should vary your diet from meal to meal 00:16:21.91\00:16:26.50 it's not best to eat the same thing every day prepared 00:16:26.53\00:16:31.28 the same way, variety is good, but it shouldn't be 00:16:31.31\00:16:33.49 to great of a variety, two to four items per meal 00:16:33.52\00:16:39.16 is probably the best, besides bread and spread and so forth. 00:16:39.19\00:16:44.14 Three is what most people use in some form: 00:16:44.17\00:16:48.95 Whole grains should be used instead of bolted wheat, 00:16:48.98\00:16:54.10 whole wheat bread, whole wheat flour, rye and oatmeal, 00:16:54.13\00:17:00.17 and less of the polished and prepared things that are 00:17:00.20\00:17:04.19 already precooked. 00:17:04.22\00:17:05.50 It's best to do your own, we want maximum nutrition 00:17:05.53\00:17:09.12 as well as maximum taste. 00:17:09.15\00:17:10.79 It is interesting how those two go together, 00:17:10.82\00:17:12.69 nutrition and natural taste go very closely together. 00:17:12.72\00:17:16.99 We should limit our intake of sugars, if we do have a 00:17:17.02\00:17:22.94 sweet tooth, there are a lot of things that can provide 00:17:22.97\00:17:25.14 for that sweet tooth. 00:17:25.17\00:17:26.78 There are dried fruits that are excellent and delicious 00:17:26.81\00:17:30.46 and nutritious, and you shouldn't find any problem 00:17:30.49\00:17:33.89 with them, they go down very easily, very nicely. 00:17:33.92\00:17:37.23 It is very important in our two meal plan to have a set time 00:17:37.26\00:17:43.09 to eat, it's not a matter of being rigid, it's a matter of 00:17:43.12\00:17:46.50 getting in harmony with nature. 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.70 When you have that set time to eat, and eat on time 00:17:48.73\00:17:52.60 your body does much better, oh you feel so much better. 00:17:52.63\00:17:55.94 You rest much better at night, you don't have that fuzzy tongue 00:17:55.97\00:18:01.51 as I mentioned before, when you wake up in the morning 00:18:01.54\00:18:03.77 you are just ready for the next meal, and you are ready for 00:18:03.80\00:18:09.58 whatever takes place, and you shouldn't have anything 00:18:09.61\00:18:12.96 in between meals except water. 00:18:13.00\00:18:15.51 Water is the only thing that we should take in between meals, 00:18:15.54\00:18:18.81 that is a very important part of the program. 00:18:18.84\00:18:25.20 If you eat something else in between meals, even so much 00:18:25.23\00:18:29.82 as a peanut, it interferes with the digestion, and causes 00:18:29.85\00:18:33.64 the stomach to hold what you have already taken in 00:18:33.67\00:18:37.21 and longer than what it needs to. 00:18:37.24\00:18:38.92 If your stomach is holding food in it longer than it 00:18:38.95\00:18:42.55 needs to, to process that, it winds up fermenting, 00:18:42.58\00:18:46.52 it winds up not making the best blood. 00:18:46.55\00:18:50.48 Remember it is the object of all that you eat, to make 00:18:50.51\00:18:53.70 good blood, so you want to take what is best in,
