Seventy-five years ago, cholesterol was a substance 00:00:01.98\00:00:05.21 that very few people had even heard of. 00:00:05.24\00:00:07.12 Now, every fourth grade school boy knows all about cholesterol. 00:00:07.15\00:00:11.52 I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician, from 00:00:11.55\00:00:14.88 Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:14.91\00:00:16.54 There, we deal quite a lot with cholesterol and people who have 00:00:16.57\00:00:20.24 lifestyle diseases. 00:00:20.27\00:00:21.68 We'd like to talk with you about cholesterol and some of the 00:00:21.71\00:00:26.12 serious problems that we're seeing with it today. 00:00:26.15\00:00:28.94 We really need to get tough with cholesterol and we can. 00:00:28.97\00:00:32.64 So we will be talking about some of the ways 00:00:32.68\00:00:35.22 in the next half an hour. 00:00:35.25\00:00:36.22 So we hope you will join us, won't you? 00:00:36.23\00:00:37.20 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:37.21\00:00:38.18 of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:01:01.05\00:01:02.05 A long time ago, we used to think of cholesterol as being 00:01:02.08\00:01:10.80 something that those who are elderly had a problem with. 00:01:10.83\00:01:13.68 We didn't think about it as a teenage problem... 00:01:13.71\00:01:16.83 but today, we are seeing it more and more in teenagers. 00:01:16.86\00:01:20.81 In fact, one out of every six teenagers has a problem with 00:01:20.84\00:01:25.18 cholesterol and it is more serious than we might think. 00:01:25.21\00:01:27.85 And so, we need to start very early in life teaching our 00:01:27.88\00:01:31.26 young people how to eat, and live, and work and be 00:01:31.29\00:01:35.51 regular in all their habits so that they can avoid the 00:01:35.54\00:01:38.31 problem with cholesterol. 00:01:38.34\00:01:39.55 Now the average teenager today does a lot of fast food shopping 00:01:39.58\00:01:46.53 and socializing with friends over some kind of very sweet and 00:01:46.56\00:01:51.34 unhealthful drink... 00:01:51.37\00:01:52.34 But it isn't necessary that teenagers have these sweet 00:01:52.35\00:01:56.10 things and these very fatty things. 00:01:56.13\00:01:57.99 Because I know that teenagers can enjoy their food and their 00:01:58.02\00:02:02.70 drinks without having all of these unhealthful things. 00:02:02.73\00:02:06.80 And here is with me, my granddaughter who is a teenager. 00:02:06.83\00:02:09.76 She makes some very nice things in her kitchen that are 00:02:09.79\00:02:15.70 not unhealthful. 00:02:15.73\00:02:16.70 And, what are you going to do for us today? 00:02:16.71\00:02:18.96 It looks like it's going to be something with orange. 00:02:18.99\00:02:21.27 Yes, I'm going to be making something that is similar to an 00:02:21.30\00:02:24.52 Orange Julius. 00:02:24.55\00:02:25.81 All you have to use is 2 cups of your favorite soymilk which 00:02:25.84\00:02:29.57 I happen to be using Silk. 00:02:29.60\00:02:30.98 Then we will add 12 ounces of frozen orange juice concentrate 00:02:31.01\00:02:31.98 and approximately a teaspoon of vanilla extract 00:02:32.01\00:02:32.98 and about 12 ice cubes. 00:02:33.01\00:02:33.98 And then you blend it until the ice is just a little bit chunky. 00:02:34.01\00:02:34.98 I won't finish blending it but this is somewhat what it 00:02:35.01\00:02:35.98 would look like after it's finished. 00:03:47.23\00:03:48.96 It looks very appetizing. 00:03:48.99\00:03:50.17 Does it taste good? 00:03:50.20\00:03:51.46 I hope so... it tastes good to me. 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.28 You mean it's sweet with just the orange juice, the 00:03:54.31\00:04:00.84 soymilk and the vanilla? 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.81 It is, although if you wish for it to be sweeter, 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.83 you can put a little bit of Stevia in it. 00:04:06.86\00:04:07.83 Oh, that would make it good for diabetics... 00:04:08.47\00:04:11.01 a little bit... 00:04:11.04\00:04:12.01 And for people who are overweight. 00:04:12.02\00:04:12.99 It's very sweet. 00:04:13.00\00:04:13.97 It also comes in powder form. 00:04:13.98\00:04:17.12 Oh yes, that's very good and the Stevia gives it a very 00:04:17.15\00:04:21.98 sweet flavor without adding calories or without making it 00:04:22.01\00:04:28.39 so that diabetics or teenagers who have a problem with 00:04:28.42\00:04:33.00 overweight or with cholesterol would not be able to take. 00:04:33.03\00:04:36.29 And so, this is a very nice sweet drink that a person who is 00:04:36.32\00:04:40.91 a teenager would certainly enjoy. 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.63 Thank you Melissa. 00:04:42.66\00:04:43.78 Now I'm very grateful that we don't have to be bound to one 00:04:43.81\00:04:49.71 set of foods or one set of nutrients but that many 00:04:49.74\00:04:54.32 different kinds of nutrients, many different kinds of 00:04:54.35\00:04:56.84 foods are present in what God has given us in nature. 00:04:56.87\00:05:01.10 So that without any difficulty at all, we can be very 00:05:01.13\00:05:04.44 well-balanced in our nutrition 00:05:04.47\00:05:06.58 We can get everything that is needed from the foods that we 00:05:06.61\00:05:11.45 have without using anything that is unhealthful. 00:05:11.48\00:05:14.23 And the teenagers should learn how to prepare these 00:05:14.26\00:05:19.52 very nice things, sweet drinks that are completely free 00:05:19.55\00:05:24.06 from guilt and also burgers and fries and hot dogs 00:05:24.09\00:05:29.82 and whatever the young people eat nowadays... 00:05:29.85\00:05:32.24 They can learn to make these very healthfully and there 00:05:32.27\00:05:34.56 are cookbooks everywhere that show young people how to do 00:05:34.59\00:05:38.00 these things and they are fun to make. 00:05:38.03\00:05:39.69 They are very nice for a group of young people to make together 00:05:39.72\00:05:43.66 And Valerie Schreiber has some absolutely wonderful-looking 00:05:43.69\00:05:47.73 things here and I'm looking forward to seeing what she has. 00:05:47.76\00:05:50.94 This is Valerie Schreiber who is one of my co-workers at 00:05:50.97\00:05:53.67 Uchee Pines, a health educator and one who is an excellent cook 00:05:53.70\00:05:58.94 So, what have you today, Valerie? 00:05:58.97\00:06:01.35 Well, Dr. Agatha, I'm going to show moms how they can do a 00:06:01.38\00:06:04.67 transition with their children because most children's favorite 00:06:04.70\00:06:08.78 dinner is hamburgers and French fries at the fast food store. 00:06:08.81\00:06:13.40 And we want to encourage moms and young people not to have 00:06:13.43\00:06:17.61 fast food for the children any longer and there's a good 00:06:17.64\00:06:21.54 way to do it but you need to get your children involved. 00:06:21.57\00:06:24.66 And one way to get your children involved... 00:06:24.69\00:06:26.98 if you will look over here... you will see that I have taken 00:06:27.01\00:06:33.02 burgers and I have bought cookie cutters. 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.91 Now, the cookie cutters look like this. 00:06:35.94\00:06:38.84 You can get all sorts of cookie cutters. 00:06:38.87\00:06:42.41 This is a clown, here's a heart, a frog... 00:06:42.44\00:06:49.01 and if you look back down here on the plate, I took 2 burgers 00:06:49.04\00:06:52.76 and made a snowman. 00:06:52.79\00:06:53.86 I took a heart, a frog and over here is a little group 00:06:53.89\00:06:58.22 of balloons... 00:06:58.25\00:07:01.11 I did that for the little tots that don't eat very much. 00:07:01.14\00:07:02.11 You can make them like a little balloon. 00:07:02.15\00:07:03.45 But the thing that I encourage you to do, moms, is to get 00:07:03.48\00:07:06.66 these cookie cutters and get your children involved. 00:07:06.69\00:07:09.76 If they get involved, they are going to eat it. 00:07:09.79\00:07:11.55 And then again, icing them with mashed potatoes is so 00:07:11.58\00:07:15.05 delicious that they will love them. 00:07:15.08\00:07:17.11 Now over here, you will see that I have a dish with just 00:07:17.14\00:07:22.41 the traditional-looking burger on a plate with French fries 00:07:22.44\00:07:26.75 and so the bachelors can have this... 00:07:26.78\00:07:29.28 They can learn how to make good burgers in place of hamburgers 00:07:29.31\00:07:33.37 in the fast food stores and they can have good French fries. 00:07:33.40\00:07:37.08 Now, I want to tell you how you can make these French fries 00:07:37.11\00:07:41.06 that are not fried and deep fried in fat. 00:07:41.09\00:07:45.31 You can go ahead and take your potatoes and you can cut them 00:07:45.34\00:07:49.98 just real nice like this... you can wash them very good first. 00:07:50.01\00:07:55.82 Leave the skin on because there is a lot of nutrition there 00:07:55.85\00:07:59.03 with the skin and then all you have to do is, in a bag, 00:07:59.06\00:08:04.70 you can mix, oh... yeast flakes, some salt, some paprika, 00:08:04.73\00:08:10.21 some chicken seasoning, any flavor that you may like as a 00:08:10.24\00:08:13.91 seasoning and then you just take your French fries like so 00:08:13.94\00:08:23.17 and you just put them in the bag like this and you can zip it up 00:08:23.20\00:08:32.97 and then just shake it. 00:08:33.00\00:08:38.65 Just shake it like this. 00:08:38.68\00:08:41.41 And then you can just pour these out on a pan, which I will just 00:08:41.44\00:08:46.25 pour them back here into this dish and they are nice and 00:08:46.28\00:08:50.52 seasoned and you can put them right into your oven 00:08:50.55\00:08:54.49 and bake them. 00:08:54.52\00:08:56.61 In fact, we just had them for lunch and they are delicious. 00:08:56.64\00:08:59.32 Now moms, you can make your children a very healthy meal 00:08:59.35\00:09:04.04 without going to the fast food restaurant because you can 00:09:04.07\00:09:06.70 have a burger and French fries and Dr. Agatha is going to bring 00:09:06.73\00:09:09.88 in Melissa's drink... instead of getting an unhealthy milkshake, 00:09:09.91\00:09:14.16 you can now have an orange drink. 00:09:14.19\00:09:15.75 And this isn't just for children moms, it can be just for you 00:09:15.78\00:09:18.57 And you can learn how to make these things quickly... 00:09:18.60\00:09:20.89 you can have all your seasonings put together for your French 00:09:20.92\00:09:23.72 fries and in a little bag, so that when you come home, 00:09:23.75\00:09:27.04 you can just pull that bag out, put your French fries in 00:09:27.07\00:09:29.27 and put it in the oven. 00:09:29.30\00:09:30.27 And, the reason that I showed you over here, how to decorate 00:09:30.28\00:09:33.92 burgers for children, is to get 00:09:33.95\00:09:34.92 your children involved in this in the beginning. 00:09:34.95\00:09:35.92 I know it looks like a lot of work but, let me tell you, 00:09:37.74\00:09:40.48 when you get your children involved in doing this, it's 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.66 so much fun for them, that they are going to eat it. 00:09:43.69\00:09:47.06 And so if they think they can do this every time they have 00:09:47.09\00:09:49.38 burgers, they're going to be more than likely to eat them 00:09:49.41\00:09:51.85 And they will tell their friends about it and their friends are 00:09:51.88\00:09:53.82 going to want to come over and everybody is going 00:09:53.85\00:09:55.62 to have a good time. 00:09:55.65\00:09:56.62 Eventually you can make more simpler things but I'm 00:09:56.63\00:09:58.75 encouraging you in the beginning make it fun for your children 00:09:58.78\00:10:02.05 In fact, I have a lot of fun in doing it and so will 00:10:02.08\00:10:04.50 you, mom, when you get to do it. 00:10:04.53\00:10:05.79 Thank you. 00:10:05.82\00:10:06.82 And of course, all this is guaranteed to have not 00:10:06.85\00:10:09.80 one single molecule of cholesterol in it. 00:10:09.83\00:10:12.41 Absolutely. 00:10:12.44\00:10:13.54 And so your children are not going to be getting high 00:10:13.57\00:10:16.62 cholesterol from this kind of food. 00:10:16.65\00:10:18.71 Cholesterol is such a problem nowadays that we study all of 00:10:18.74\00:10:25.22 the blood to see what other markers there are for coronary 00:10:25.25\00:10:29.82 heart disease. 00:10:29.85\00:10:30.82 Markers for coronary heart disease are generally falling in 00:10:30.83\00:10:34.78 three categories right now. 00:10:34.81\00:10:36.40 One is cholesterol, a second is triglycerides 00:10:36.43\00:10:40.97 and a third is homocysteine, those three. 00:10:41.00\00:10:44.43 Now just being added now and maybe will come to be 00:10:44.46\00:10:48.69 standard in the next few months or few years is that 00:10:48.72\00:10:51.85 of fibrinogen. 00:10:51.88\00:10:53.45 Fibrinogen is also a marker and I predict that it will become 00:10:53.48\00:10:56.96 as common, commonly done for predicting heart disease as 00:10:56.99\00:11:02.95 cholesterol now is. 00:11:02.98\00:11:04.30 But probably if you think about the fact that cholesterol is 00:11:04.33\00:11:09.56 not present at all in any kind of vegetable food... 00:11:09.59\00:11:16.96 It's only present in animal foods and that that animal 00:11:16.99\00:11:20.68 food has to be taken in sufficient quantity so that 00:11:20.71\00:11:24.19 it will raise the blood cholesterol. 00:11:24.22\00:11:26.10 Now, there are some people whose cholesterol, by family origin or 00:11:26.13\00:11:31.79 heredity, is going to be high. 00:11:31.82\00:11:34.57 Now these individuals, even on a totally vegetarian diet will 00:11:34.60\00:11:39.25 still have to be very careful not to overeat, not to eat 00:11:39.28\00:11:42.54 too many times a day. 00:11:42.57\00:11:43.81 The 2-meal plan for them is usually ideal. 00:11:43.84\00:11:46.70 And so with this, even those who have an hereditary high 00:11:46.73\00:11:51.14 cholesterol, will find that they do very well. 00:11:51.17\00:11:54.62 Exercise and sunshine are also important for the person 00:11:54.65\00:11:58.74 who has an hereditary type of high cholesterol. 00:11:58.77\00:12:02.47 It's very important for them that they obey all of the 8 00:12:02.50\00:12:08.42 natural laws of health. 00:12:08.45\00:12:09.89 Have fresh air... we've found some people whose cholesterol 00:12:09.92\00:12:13.48 will not come down unless they have fresh air in their 00:12:13.51\00:12:15.64 bedrooms at night. 00:12:15.67\00:12:16.80 And unless they learn to be relaxed and to exercise a lot 00:12:16.83\00:12:25.78 and to be unstressed. 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.79 Now, there are other factors that are involved in 00:12:27.82\00:12:32.46 homocysteine that are not in cholesterol. 00:12:32.50\00:12:36.44 Homocysteine also has some aspects of B6 and other things 00:12:36.48\00:12:43.72 but soy has a good affect on homocysteine and soy also has 00:12:43.75\00:12:51.56 a very good affect on cholesterol. 00:12:51.59\00:12:53.08 Soy products of all kinds and the more close to the bean 00:12:53.11\00:12:57.24 itself that you get, the better it is from the standpoint 00:12:57.28\00:13:01.40 of its benefit for the body. 00:13:01.43\00:13:03.77 And so, Valerie, it looks as if you've got something else 00:13:03.80\00:13:06.95 to show us. 00:13:06.98\00:13:07.95 Oh I sure do, Dr. Agatha. 00:13:07.96\00:13:09.83 It looks delicious... Yes! 00:13:09.86\00:13:10.83 And it's beautiful. 00:13:10.84\00:13:11.81 Now what I've done here is another one of those 00:13:11.82\00:13:14.17 fun things. 00:13:14.20\00:13:15.17 And I do this, again, to help with the transition. 00:13:15.18\00:13:18.63 Especially those that maybe like fish. 00:13:18.66\00:13:20.83 This is a mock salmon loaf and if you look real close, you will 00:13:20.86\00:13:25.59 see it looks like a fish... 00:13:25.62\00:13:26.89 Oh there's the tail over there. 00:13:26.92\00:13:28.63 Yeah, I've done it with lettuce. 00:13:28.66\00:13:29.63 There's his little head and there are his gills. 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.69 And this is made from soybean. 00:13:31.72\00:13:34.17 Now you can do one of two ways, 00:13:34.20\00:13:36.58 you can get soybean flour and that's all I really have in 00:13:36.61\00:13:40.68 this is soybean flour, ground up soybeans... 00:13:40.71\00:13:43.76 and what you do is, you soak your soybeans at night 00:13:43.79\00:13:46.36 and then you rinse them off in the morning, put them in the 00:13:46.39\00:13:49.13 blender with the seasoning that you want and blend 00:13:49.16\00:13:50.35 them up and when you blend them up, they'll turn out and look 00:13:50.38\00:13:55.41 just like this. 00:13:55.44\00:13:57.06 And you can do so many things with ground up soy, that 00:13:57.09\00:14:03.21 there is just no end to the things that you can do and 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.74 dishes that you can make with soy like... 00:14:05.77\00:14:08.21 egg salad, scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, all kinds of 00:14:08.24\00:14:12.89 loaves and burgers. 00:14:12.92\00:14:14.12 And in my burgers, I usually put ground up 00:14:14.15\00:14:15.12 soy, just like you see here. 00:14:15.15\00:14:16.12 So, in my little fish here, is ground up soybeans, seasoning, 00:14:18.56\00:14:23.56 tomato juice and some soy flour. 00:14:23.59\00:14:26.78 And I just blend it all together put it in a mold, 00:14:26.81\00:14:29.36 put it in the oven and then take it out. 00:14:29.39\00:14:31.43 This makes it kind of fun, even dad who's kind of resistant 00:14:31.46\00:14:34.90 to this change in the home, when he sees this, 00:14:34.93\00:14:37.46 he'll be so amused and it does amuse you 00:14:37.49\00:14:40.58 You know he is going to take a bite of it instead of being 00:14:40.61\00:14:42.47 angry... how can you be angry if this is sitting on the table? 00:14:42.50\00:14:44.79 Not really, could you, Dr. Agatha... 00:14:44.82\00:14:47.33 No, in fact, even if I were resistant to changing from meat 00:14:47.36\00:14:51.82 to a vegetarian diet, I think that with this, I would be 00:14:51.85\00:14:55.35 willing to give it a whirl. 00:14:55.38\00:14:56.35 Sure, and so I want to encourage you also, moms, you 00:14:56.38\00:14:57.36 can make a real nice tartar sauce with this. 00:14:57.39\00:14:58.36 Just get your favorite vegetarian cookbook and 00:15:02.93\00:15:06.12 there are many of them in the health food stores today, 00:15:06.15\00:15:08.41 Or you can even call Uchee Pines, we have a great 00:15:08.44\00:15:10.69 selection there. 00:15:10.73\00:15:12.29 You can take your favorite mayonnaise and all you have to 00:15:12.33\00:15:14.70 do is cut up sweet pickles in them and you can have a 00:15:14.73\00:15:18.25 delicious tartar sauce that you can put with your fish meal. 00:15:18.28\00:15:21.37 Sounds very good and very appetizing. 00:15:21.40\00:15:24.28 And also fun. 00:15:24.31\00:15:25.28 These are fun things to do and if you like to putter around 00:15:25.29\00:15:28.68 in the kitchen, you can be very certain that you will enjoy 00:15:28.71\00:15:31.63 doing these things. 00:15:31.66\00:15:32.63 Now some people will need more help than just the soy 00:15:32.64\00:15:37.47 to bring the cholesterol down and the exercise, 00:15:37.50\00:15:40.05 and the sunshine. 00:15:40.08\00:15:41.05 They will need some other things as well. 00:15:41.06\00:15:43.55 And, I have asked John Champen to talk with you some about 00:15:43.58\00:15:47.21 some studies that have been done. 00:15:47.24\00:15:48.80 Many have been done in many parts of the world on a variety 00:15:48.83\00:15:52.00 of things but at this time, John Champen, who is my 00:15:52.03\00:15:56.31 co-worker at Uchee Pines, and in the administration there 00:15:56.34\00:15:59.86 and also a health educator... he will talk with you about 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.90 a study done in Finland. 00:16:02.93\00:16:06.25 Thank you. 00:16:06.28\00:16:07.25 There have been two recent studies; one was done in 00:16:07.26\00:16:10.00 Finland and one was done in Brooklyn, New York. 00:16:10.03\00:16:12.12 It had to do with charcoal and had to do with cholesterol... 00:16:12.15\00:16:16.39 putting the two together. 00:16:16.42\00:16:17.42 It's very interesting... 00:16:17.45\00:16:18.81 The one in Finland states that, in the Finnish studies 00:16:18.84\00:16:23.71 7 patients were given a quarter ounce of activated charcoal 00:16:23.74\00:16:27.76 3 times a day for 4 weeks. 00:16:27.79\00:16:29.32 At the end of 4 weeks, their levels of cholesterol went down, 00:16:29.35\00:16:34.76 the LDL went down 41% on average. 00:16:34.79\00:16:38.96 Now, traditional drug therapy usually lowers LDL or 00:16:38.99\00:16:43.77 low density lipoproteins cholesterol, only 16%. 00:16:43.80\00:16:48.32 That's according to "The Lancet," August 16, 1986 and 00:16:48.35\00:16:53.75 "Prevention Magazine," January 1987. 00:16:53.78\00:16:56.53 The other study was done by the "Sunny Health Science Center" in 00:16:56.56\00:17:00.32 Brooklyn, New York. 00:17:00.35\00:17:01.32 Dr. Friedman had 6 patients take a little over 1 ounce 00:17:01.33\00:17:06.96 of activated charcoal for 24 weeks. 00:17:06.99\00:17:12.35 At the end of the trial period, the cholesterol levels 00:17:12.38\00:17:15.39 in this group fell 43% and their triglycerides fell 76%. 00:17:15.42\00:17:22.47 Now that's also from "Prevention Magazine," January 1987. 00:17:22.50\00:17:27.13 Apparently charcoal attracts and holds onto the cholesterol 00:17:27.16\00:17:32.25 taking it through the entire system without it getting into 00:17:32.28\00:17:35.53 the bloodstream, at least a good percentage of it does that. 00:17:35.56\00:17:36.53 It looks like this is a possible way to lower cholesterol 00:17:38.50\00:17:42.49 on a regular basis. 00:17:42.52\00:17:44.24 Sounds good. Yes and I like charcoal. 00:17:44.27\00:17:46.92 It's another thing that really enforces my enjoyment 00:17:46.95\00:17:50.14 of charcoal as a remedy. 00:17:50.17\00:17:51.41 It's not only good on the surface, it's good internally 00:17:51.44\00:17:54.27 and it's good for the blood. 00:17:54.30\00:17:55.64 It's a good blood cleanser. 00:17:55.67\00:17:57.10 Now, we have talked about homocysteine to some degree but 00:17:57.13\00:18:01.65 I'd like to tell you that it's not usually included in a 00:18:01.68\00:18:04.62 routine set of laboratory 00:18:04.65\00:18:09.72 testing done for your annual physical. 00:18:09.75\00:18:11.28 So you request that of your physician. 00:18:11.32\00:18:12.84 Unfortunately, it's still a little bit expensive but I 00:18:12.87\00:18:16.03 predict that as we get more and more people who want the 00:18:16.06\00:18:20.47 homocysteine test, I predict that it will come down... 00:18:20.50\00:18:24.45 The price will come down and it will not be so expensive. 00:18:24.48\00:18:28.07 Homocysteine is an altogether separate marker for heart 00:18:28.10\00:18:33.95 disease than cholesterol is. 00:18:33.98\00:18:35.74 And homocysteine also indicates your likelihood of getting 00:18:35.77\00:18:40.09 cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and a 00:18:40.12\00:18:44.11 number of other problems in life that we have come to associate 00:18:44.15\00:18:48.16 with a high homocysteine level. 00:18:48.19\00:18:50.61 There are certain things that we know will be helpful in 00:18:50.64\00:18:54.73 bringing the homocysteine level down and thereby reducing 00:18:54.76\00:18:58.79 your probability of getting any one of these disorders 00:18:58.82\00:19:03.50 that I've mentioned. 00:19:03.53\00:19:04.50 One of those is vitamin B12. 00:19:04.53\00:19:06.74 Vitamin B12 is very important in helping make the change 00:19:06.77\00:19:10.99 in the amino acids that result that an improper change 00:19:11.02\00:19:15.58 there makes homocysteine level go up. 00:19:15.61\00:19:18.50 And so if you take B12, that 00:19:18.53\00:19:19.50 will help with the homocysteine level. 00:19:19.53\00:19:20.51 Folic acid will also help and folic acid is present in 00:19:23.83\00:19:28.03 greens and beans and whole grains but folic acid may also 00:19:28.06\00:19:34.62 need to be taken by supplement for those people who have a high 00:19:34.65\00:19:38.73 homocysteine level. 00:19:38.76\00:19:39.98 Vitamin B6 is also one of those things that we give by 00:19:40.01\00:19:45.45 supplement to people who have a high homocysteine level. 00:19:45.48\00:19:49.26 There are certain foods that are high in vitamin B6 and we want 00:19:49.29\00:19:53.39 to discuss those with you now 00:19:53.42\00:19:55.29 And so I have Valerie here who 00:19:55.32\00:19:57.36 is going to show you some of these foods that are high in 00:19:57.39\00:20:00.15 vitamin B6. 00:20:00.18\00:20:01.15 Valerie, what do you have? 00:20:01.16\00:20:02.13 Well vitamin B6 happens to be one of my favorite vitamins 00:20:02.14\00:20:05.24 to talk about simply because it's involved in more bodily 00:20:05.27\00:20:08.21 functions than almost any other nutrient. 00:20:08.24\00:20:10.30 It is involved in the physical, as well as the mental. 00:20:10.33\00:20:13.52 And let me just read you a few things that it does. 00:20:13.55\00:20:16.22 It is involved in the production of hydrochloric acid, 00:20:16.25\00:20:19.21 in the absorption of fats and proteins, 00:20:19.24\00:20:21.77 in maintaining sodium and potassium balance. 00:20:21.80\00:20:25.65 It promotes red blood cell formation. 00:20:25.68\00:20:28.12 It is needed for normal brain function. 00:20:28.15\00:20:30.98 It aids the absorption of vitamin B12. 00:20:31.01\00:20:33.77 It aids the immune system functions. 00:20:33.80\00:20:36.21 It aids in the ability of antibody production. 00:20:36.24\00:20:39.89 B6 also plays a role in cancer immunity and aids in the 00:20:39.92\00:20:44.24 prevention of atherosclerosis. 00:20:44.27\00:20:46.09 So you can see, these are just a few of the systems that 00:20:46.12\00:20:49.73 B12 plays a major role in. 00:20:49.76\00:20:52.01 So therefore, I want to show you just some of the foods that 00:20:52.04\00:20:55.46 have rich sources of B12... 00:20:55.49\00:20:58.13 And bananas right here, 00:20:58.16\00:21:01.92 have one of the richest sources of B12. 00:21:01.96\00:21:05.30 Now let me tell you about bananas. 00:21:05.33\00:21:06.30 When I was a little girl, I used to love bananas. 00:21:06.31\00:21:08.85 And, I used to dream I was up in a banana tree eating 00:21:08.88\00:21:12.61 bananas and so I must have needed a lot of B6 back then, 00:21:12.64\00:21:15.70 I don't know, but I encourage you to feed your children 00:21:15.73\00:21:18.78 bananas... eat bananas. 00:21:18.81\00:21:20.22 They are one of the richest sources of B6. 00:21:20.25\00:21:24.08 Now other sources of B6 are in potatoes. 00:21:24.11\00:21:30.23 Avocados are another very good source of B6 00:21:30.26\00:21:36.30 And, good old tomato juice has plenty of B6 in it. 00:21:36.34\00:21:41.33 Now your corn flakes whole grain cereals are fortified with B6, 00:21:41.36\00:21:47.68 so are grains and seeds which I have right here. 00:21:47.71\00:21:52.38 Here are some good old sunflower seeds 00:21:52.41\00:21:53.94 and they are so delicious and they're just filled with B6. 00:21:53.98\00:21:57.27 We also have here a soy product, which is tofu, but it has a good 00:21:57.31\00:22:03.14 amount of B6 in it as well. 00:22:03.17\00:22:04.82 And there are many other vegetables like green beans, 00:22:04.85\00:22:08.62 and sweet potatoes that have a good amount of B6 in them. 00:22:08.65\00:22:12.82 And I want to show you, we also have some herbal teas... 00:22:12.85\00:22:15.65 believe it or not that have a good source of B6 in them. 00:22:15.68\00:22:19.60 And this is oat straw. 00:22:19.63\00:22:21.38 Here is catnip and this is very good if you want to relax. 00:22:21.41\00:22:28.18 Catnip is a good herb to help you relax your nervous system. 00:22:28.21\00:22:32.88 So that's why B6 plays a role in that. 00:22:32.91\00:22:35.35 Now we know why it helps so much. 00:22:35.38\00:22:37.54 Alfalfa also has quite a bit of B6 in it. 00:22:37.57\00:22:42.25 So if you are not eating vegetables and you want to 00:22:42.28\00:22:43.81 be sure that you are getting some good amounts of B6, 00:22:43.84\00:22:46.89 you can be drinking your herbal teas. 00:22:46.92\00:22:48.58 So you will be getting it whatever you are doing, 00:22:48.61\00:22:51.35 whether you are drinking teas or eating your 00:22:51.38\00:22:52.35 fruits and vegetables. 00:22:52.38\00:22:53.35 That sounds good and not only is this nice to talk about, 00:22:54.00\00:22:57.48 but it is also good to contemplate what nice things 00:22:57.51\00:23:00.28 that we have that are high in vitamin B6. 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.11 And so, we can see by these very simple things, 00:23:03.14\00:23:06.94 that we can learn what we can do that will reduce our likelihood 00:23:06.97\00:23:12.20 of getting heart disease. 00:23:12.23\00:23:13.26 Heart disease is not nice and I will show you why right 00:23:13.29\00:23:18.52 here with these two specimens from my museum. 00:23:18.55\00:23:21.14 These hearts are actual human hearts and they have been 00:23:21.17\00:23:25.47 treated in such a way that when I prepared them this way, 00:23:25.50\00:23:29.26 the first thing was to fix them with formalin 00:23:29.29\00:23:31.73 Then to replace the water little by little with a fat soluble 00:23:31.76\00:23:37.81 substance and eventually end up with paraffin. 00:23:37.84\00:23:40.71 The whole process takes about one month 00:23:40.74\00:23:43.45 and for me, that was quite a long time to spend on 00:23:43.48\00:23:48.02 these... of course, I didn't have to do it full-time. 00:23:48.05\00:23:50.08 But, I felt like one of the head shrinkers from some of these 00:23:50.11\00:23:53.17 countries that shrink heads because the process is 00:23:53.20\00:23:57.13 somewhat similar. 00:23:57.16\00:23:58.13 Now you will notice in this heart... this is the normal 00:23:58.14\00:24:01.94 heart... that's the back that you've just been seeing 00:24:01.97\00:24:04.54 and this is the front. 00:24:04.57\00:24:05.77 It's about the size of your loosely-clenched fist. 00:24:05.80\00:24:08.87 And it sits in the chest upside down so that the 00:24:08.90\00:24:11.36 point goes down as you see here. 00:24:11.39\00:24:13.88 Now, if you will notice carefully, 00:24:13.91\00:24:15.93 you can see a thin line right down here representing 00:24:15.96\00:24:21.00 the major coronary vessel, major coronary artery. 00:24:21.03\00:24:26.87 Now I have here a heart of a man the very same age as the 00:24:26.90\00:24:34.27 normal heart but this heart is very abnormal. 00:24:34.30\00:24:37.18 You will be able to see immediately that the same artery 00:24:37.21\00:24:40.59 that you could barely see, is now very easily seen because 00:24:40.62\00:24:44.47 it has so much calcium deposited in it. 00:24:44.50\00:24:48.00 The calcium is deposited because of the fact that the artery 00:24:48.03\00:24:52.34 got sick and the fat that first deposited in the artery 00:24:52.37\00:24:57.39 then drew the calcium to it and now we have a stiffened artery 00:24:57.42\00:25:03.40 filled with material that makes 00:25:03.43\00:25:06.32 it difficult for blood to go through. 00:25:06.35\00:25:08.12 It also makes it so that the artery cannot make its normal 00:25:08.15\00:25:13.40 pulsation and that, of course, 00:25:13.43\00:25:15.60 alters the blood pressure as well. 00:25:15.63\00:25:17.22 It makes the heart have to pump harder in order to get blood 00:25:17.25\00:25:20.68 through this stiffened artery. 00:25:20.71\00:25:23.08 Now some people feel, well I will not be very disturbed about 00:25:23.11\00:25:28.02 my hardened arteries because they have techniques now 00:25:28.05\00:25:31.30 that they can go up and strip all this material that's on the 00:25:31.33\00:25:35.45 inside of the artery... they can just strip that out 00:25:35.48\00:25:38.01 Or, they have certain bypass procedures that they can do 00:25:38.04\00:25:42.66 and so if my artery gets very badly damaged like this one is, 00:25:42.69\00:25:48.66 and you can see the artery right here. 00:25:48.69\00:25:51.79 This artery is very calcified, very small. 00:25:51.82\00:25:56.42 This is the aorta which should be almost twice that size. 00:25:56.45\00:26:00.92 This is the lower end of the aorta 00:26:00.95\00:26:02.91 And what happened here was the same kind of calcium 00:26:02.94\00:26:06.10 deposits following the fat, like cholesterol and triglycerides 00:26:06.13\00:26:10.64 that deposited in the aorta 00:26:10.67\00:26:13.94 Those then made the aorta itself so that it was nonfunctional. 00:26:13.97\00:26:18.92 And so the surgeons went in and did a bypass for the man 00:26:18.95\00:26:24.73 and gave him an aorta. 00:26:24.76\00:26:26.95 They also replaced another artery... 00:26:26.98\00:26:29.98 I think it was the renal artery. 00:26:30.01\00:26:31.88 And made a nice, new aorta for him with the tributary 00:26:31.91\00:26:38.54 arteries but unfortunately, it only functioned for 00:26:38.57\00:26:42.23 about 18 months and then it got a clot in it as you can 00:26:42.26\00:26:46.16 here... you see this dark clot here inside of it. 00:26:46.19\00:26:50.34 And that made it so that the artery was then nonfunctional 00:26:50.37\00:26:54.27 and when that happened, of course, the man lost his life. 00:26:54.30\00:26:57.56 So that isn't the way to go, not with surgeries, not even 00:26:57.59\00:27:02.04 with drugs that promise you that they will bring your 00:27:02.07\00:27:06.75 cholesterol down. 00:27:06.78\00:27:07.81 The very best that you could hope with a cholesterol 00:27:07.84\00:27:12.65 lowering drug is perhaps 15% reduction in your cholesterol 00:27:12.68\00:27:17.67 But you may need 50 or 60% reduction in your cholesterol. 00:27:17.70\00:27:21.61 And of course, that could not be achieved with these 00:27:21.64\00:27:26.58 artificial things. 00:27:26.61\00:27:28.89 So the natural thing such as diet and exercise and these 00:27:28.92\00:27:34.46 things that God has provided for us in abundance, 00:27:34.49\00:27:37.40 showing His great love for us and making it so that we are 00:27:37.43\00:27:40.64 not just cast out here in the earth with a serious foe 00:27:40.67\00:27:45.75 like Satan without many tools that we can use to fight 00:27:45.78\00:27:50.32 against Satan's sophistries. 00:27:50.35\00:27:52.26 So, may this be your experience. 00:27:52.29\00:27:54.43 May God bless you. 00:27:54.46\00:27:55.43
