We see the glad sunshine and it makes us very happy. 00:00:02.33\00:00:04.47 And there are some physical benefits and emotional benefits 00:00:04.50\00:00:07.11 that we get from sunshine. 00:00:07.14\00:00:08.91 I'm Agatha Thrash, a staff physician at Uchee Pines 00:00:08.94\00:00:12.81 Institute and for the next half an hour, we will be talking with 00:00:12.84\00:00:16.46 you about the benefits and some of the problems with getting 00:00:16.49\00:00:20.47 too much sunshine. 00:00:20.50\00:00:21.47 So join us won't you? 00:00:21.48\00:00:22.87 Welcome to "Help Yourself to Health" with Dr. Agatha Thrash 00:00:42.84\00:00:46.65 of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:00:46.68\00:00:48.66 And now, here is your host, Dr. Thrash. 00:00:48.69\00:00:51.43 I can't imagine that our Heavenly Father could have shown 00:00:51.46\00:00:56.95 us His love for us in a better way, than with the sunshine. 00:00:56.98\00:01:01.43 It's always there, though sometimes we can't see it. 00:01:01.46\00:01:04.88 But it is always giving earth it's benefits. 00:01:04.91\00:01:08.10 Without it, we cannot live, nor could we produce any food, nor 00:01:08.13\00:01:13.23 a place for us to have shelter. 00:01:13.26\00:01:14.93 So, we can expect that there are many good benefits from it that 00:01:14.96\00:01:19.25 our physical bodies and our minds would derive 00:01:19.28\00:01:22.14 from the sunshine. 00:01:22.17\00:01:23.22 And with me today is John Champen and also, a little 00:01:23.25\00:01:26.99 later will be Don Miller and we will be talking with you 00:01:27.02\00:01:30.52 about some of the benefits of sunshine and some of the 00:01:30.55\00:01:33.57 cautions that we need to have. 00:01:33.60\00:01:34.57 I'm so happy that the sun goes all around the world and it 00:01:36.36\00:01:40.82 is able to bless and encourage so many in so many ways. 00:01:40.85\00:01:44.05 We are going to go to the screen now to look at some 00:01:44.08\00:01:45.91 of those benefits that are ours to receive every single day 00:01:45.94\00:01:49.42 when the sun is shining. 00:01:49.45\00:01:50.69 We see the benefit of outdoor exercise as opposed to 00:02:07.68\00:02:10.16 indoor exercise. 00:02:10.20\00:02:11.29 It also, here in graphics 2, we have a word from the Scripture 00:02:12.81\00:02:16.32 which encourages us. 00:02:16.36\00:02:18.25 Our next one, and we can testify to that, each of us has 00:02:24.00\00:02:30.36 experienced that. 00:02:30.39\00:02:31.56 Let's see what else it does. 00:02:31.59\00:02:32.88 Lowers blood pressure which we need. 00:02:34.85\00:02:38.23 Increases white blood cells to fight our infections and 00:02:42.46\00:02:47.91 to keep our immune system in the best shape. 00:02:47.94\00:02:50.07 Also lowers respiratory rate and slows resting heart 00:02:50.10\00:02:54.62 rate and we need that also. 00:02:54.66\00:02:56.43 Blood carries more oxygen increasing our health. 00:02:57.24\00:03:00.31 Many people are not aware of that 00:03:02.73\00:03:05.85 but that is a real benefit in sunlight. 00:03:05.88\00:03:08.17 We'd like to have that. 00:03:22.11\00:03:23.83 The more blood the heart pumps at each beat, the less 00:03:23.86\00:03:26.80 it has to work; the more resting takes place. 00:03:26.83\00:03:29.83 The blood output increases 39% for several days and the 00:03:29.86\00:03:36.64 benefits of this continue to last. 00:03:36.67\00:03:39.69 We feel better about ourselves, about our world, 00:03:45.31\00:03:48.08 about everything. 00:03:48.11\00:03:49.08 Crises met with less difficulty and we do have crises more 00:03:52.31\00:03:56.84 and more in our lives. 00:03:56.87\00:03:57.96 Calms the nerves and decreases the adrenaline... what a 00:03:57.99\00:04:03.10 blessing that is. 00:04:03.13\00:04:04.10 Also, our next graphics shows us that as the sunlight touches 00:04:04.11\00:04:05.08 the water, it purifies and kills many germs such as listed. 00:04:05.09\00:04:06.06 We see that there is not more water being produced every day 00:04:26.42\00:04:32.30 but God is able to purify the water that is, so that we can 00:04:32.33\00:04:36.97 have clean, pure, fresh water. 00:04:37.00\00:04:39.22 Our next graphics... Kills bacteria on the skin. 00:04:39.25\00:04:45.12 I remember my wife had an operation and after the 00:04:45.15\00:04:48.89 operation, she had a little infection there and they wheeled 00:04:48.92\00:04:53.08 her out into the sunlight and the sunlight was able to kill 00:04:53.11\00:04:56.66 bacteria that was on the skin. 00:04:56.69\00:04:58.48 It was marvelous... without anything else being done. 00:04:58.51\00:05:01.69 We see that sunlight also is good for arthritis. 00:05:01.72\00:05:02.69 It's a very comforting experience having the sun 00:05:18.32\00:05:22.53 warm the joints. 00:05:22.56\00:05:23.69 Dr. Thrash, the sun does a lot of good things, doesn't it? 00:05:30.58\00:05:33.01 Yes it does. 00:05:33.04\00:05:34.01 And I'm especially interested in your mentioning about how 00:05:34.02\00:05:37.69 it kills germs, not only on the skin but also in water. 00:05:37.72\00:05:42.89 So that we could take a jar of water and expose it to the sun 00:05:42.92\00:05:47.11 and it may have been contaminated before but we can 00:05:47.14\00:05:50.02 expect that with the exposure to sunlight, that we will have 00:05:50.05\00:05:54.00 some benefit in purifying water and making it so that it might 00:05:54.03\00:05:58.01 be capable of being drunk. 00:05:58.04\00:06:00.41 So, as each one of these benefits of sunshine stacks up 00:06:00.44\00:06:07.90 and we have one after the other, we are enjoined to believe that 00:06:07.93\00:06:14.39 our Heavenly Father loves us. 00:06:14.42\00:06:15.94 He wanted us to meet the tempter 00:06:15.97\00:06:18.64 Meet the great enemy with as many tools to fight 00:06:18.67\00:06:23.96 with as possible and the sun is certainly one of those. 00:06:23.99\00:06:27.16 Now Don Miller is here and he is going to tell you some more 00:06:27.19\00:06:31.43 things about the benefits of sun. 00:06:31.46\00:06:34.08 Really, I'm going to elucidate a little bit more on what 00:06:35.16\00:06:37.20 Brother Champen had just said on a few of these benefits but 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.72 I want to go back to when I was a child. 00:06:39.75\00:06:42.08 I remember when I was a little child, someone said if the sun 00:06:42.11\00:06:46.22 were one inch closer to this earth, we would all burn up. 00:06:46.25\00:06:49.49 I was afraid to grow. 00:06:49.52\00:06:50.52 I was afraid to jump for a long time. 00:06:50.55\00:06:52.24 But the Lord has that sun at just the right distance from us 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.93 to give us everything that we need for life and a lot of the 00:06:55.96\00:06:59.22 things that Brother Champen mentioned. 00:06:59.25\00:07:00.67 I want to go into a little bit more about how that really works 00:07:00.70\00:07:04.09 Let's think about the cholesterol thing. 00:07:04.12\00:07:06.89 You know, we've got good cholesterol. 00:07:06.92\00:07:08.78 As a matter of fact, sometimes we think that cholesterol 00:07:08.81\00:07:10.68 is a four-letter word. 00:07:10.71\00:07:11.74 Well, it is not. 00:07:11.77\00:07:12.78 Cholesterol is good. 00:07:12.81\00:07:14.55 If it wasn't good, our bodies would not produce it. 00:07:14.58\00:07:17.25 We produce all the cholesterol that we need. 00:07:17.28\00:07:19.34 Now, why do we produce the cholesterol? 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.92 We've got these natural oils in cholesterol in our skin. 00:07:21.95\00:07:26.66 As the sun strikes the skin, it turns that cholesterol into 00:07:26.69\00:07:32.69 vitamin D. 00:07:32.72\00:07:34.14 And, of course, we need vitamin D in our bodies. 00:07:34.17\00:07:36.59 And so that is one of the good reasons it is there. 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.71 Now the sunshine reduces our cholesterol through that method 00:07:38.74\00:07:42.84 and there was a study once done, not a study, a case history 00:07:42.87\00:07:46.27 of a woman who had her blood taken and her cholesterol was 00:07:46.30\00:07:50.38 333 and her triglycerides were 229. 00:07:50.41\00:07:55.10 They put this lady on a strict sunbath regimen, 00:07:55.13\00:08:00.90 did not change her diet, no exercise, did nothing else 00:08:00.93\00:08:04.35 but put her on a sunbath. 00:08:04.38\00:08:06.20 Gave her four days of sunbath. 00:08:06.23\00:08:08.78 Now, I'm not talking about just laying out in the sunshine for 00:08:08.81\00:08:11.43 four days long. 00:08:11.46\00:08:12.43 But each day, she got a couple of sunbaths. 00:08:12.44\00:08:15.07 In those four days, her cholesterol fell to 221 and her 00:08:15.10\00:08:20.59 triglycerides to 197. 00:08:20.62\00:08:22.85 That is over a 100-point drop in four days just from the 00:08:22.88\00:08:27.37 application of the sunshine to the skin. 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.26 I'd say it's a pretty good benefit. 00:08:29.29\00:08:30.83 Now, so we got our cholesterol coming down... 00:08:30.86\00:08:33.54 How about our blood pressure? 00:08:33.57\00:08:35.08 Well, let's take the step one step further with 00:08:35.11\00:08:38.69 the cholesterol thing. 00:08:38.72\00:08:39.79 We've got the cholesterol in the skin... the sunshine strikes 00:08:39.82\00:08:43.92 the skin, turns the cholesterol into vitamin D 00:08:43.95\00:08:47.29 But, we have to have cholesterol in the skin and so the body says 00:08:47.32\00:08:52.14 "hey, hey, we need some more cholesterol in the skin... 00:08:52.17\00:08:54.22 where are we going to get it?" 00:08:54.25\00:08:55.22 Where does it get it? 00:08:55.25\00:08:56.22 It gets it out of the blood. 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.20 It gets it off of the artery walls and 00:08:57.23\00:08:59.85 so it sends it up there. 00:08:59.88\00:09:00.85 Now, in doing that, it lessens the fat in the blood which 00:09:01.24\00:09:05.70 brings our blood pressure down because now the heart 00:09:05.73\00:09:08.05 is not having to pump so hard through those narrow streets. 00:09:08.08\00:09:11.38 Just imagine if you will... (many of you probably live in 00:09:11.41\00:09:16.47 large cities)... the interstate going around your city or the 00:09:16.50\00:09:19.30 largest street in your city... 00:09:19.33\00:09:20.94 rush hour traffic completely full. 00:09:20.97\00:09:24.09 What happens, and this happens quite often in many major cities 00:09:24.12\00:09:27.77 ...they are fixing four of the lanes and only two are open 00:09:27.80\00:09:30.59 one going in one direction and one in the other direction. 00:09:30.62\00:09:34.22 Everything gets slow. 00:09:34.25\00:09:36.13 Same thing in your body. 00:09:36.16\00:09:37.58 As these main arteries, our main highways, our main streets in 00:09:37.61\00:09:42.75 our body get smaller, it slows down the traffic. 00:09:42.78\00:09:46.01 But as we open that up, our traffic moves better; therefore, 00:09:46.04\00:09:49.42 our blood pressure gets lower. 00:09:49.45\00:09:51.32 Now also sunshine increases the oxygen-carrying capacity 00:09:51.35\00:09:56.64 of our blood. 00:09:56.67\00:09:57.93 How does it do that 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.00 Well, step one, our cholesterol is going down and 00:09:59.03\00:10:01.68 if our cholesterol goes down, we've got less 00:10:01.71\00:10:04.80 cholesterol in the blood. 00:10:04.83\00:10:05.80 Now, we do need cholesterol in the blood as part of our 00:10:05.83\00:10:07.71 clotting mechanism but many people have far too much 00:10:07.74\00:10:10.56 serum cholesterol. 00:10:10.59\00:10:11.56 That's when you go to the doctor or the lab and have your blood 00:10:11.57\00:10:14.77 drawn... that's called your serum cholesterol. 00:10:14.80\00:10:17.80 And we recommend that your cholesterol be about 00:10:17.83\00:10:20.48 100 plus your age. 00:10:20.51\00:10:22.12 And most people, it's 100 plus their age, plus their mother's 00:10:22.15\00:10:25.16 age and someone else's age in the house. 00:10:25.19\00:10:26.91 We want to keep our blood cholesterol down. 00:10:26.94\00:10:29.49 So, as our cholesterol falls, that means less fat in our blood 00:10:29.52\00:10:34.29 our red blood cells aren't aggregating or sticking together 00:10:34.32\00:10:38.60 And they are more capable of carrying a larger load of oxygen 00:10:38.63\00:10:42.43 down to the cells where it needs it. 00:10:42.46\00:10:44.00 And so, therefore, less cholesterol, more oxygen 00:10:44.03\00:10:47.39 to the cells. 00:10:47.42\00:10:48.40 It also reduces the resting heart rate. 00:10:48.43\00:10:52.43 Now, how does it do that? 00:10:52.46\00:10:54.31 Well, we have to go back to the same steps again. 00:10:54.34\00:10:56.77 When our cholesterol is falling down, our blood pressure is 00:10:56.80\00:11:00.28 going down and we are getting more oxygen to the cells 00:11:00.31\00:11:04.62 and to the muscles and so, therefore, our heart is saying 00:11:04.65\00:11:09.05 "I don't have to work quite so hard. " 00:11:09.08\00:11:10.61 Now how does your heart rest? 00:11:10.64\00:11:12.42 It beats and it rests, it beats and it rests. 00:11:12.45\00:11:16.17 Some people's heart goes like a like a humming bird's heart, 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.39 pumping so fast. 00:11:19.42\00:11:21.06 But you get your heart rate down to 60, 56, 54, there is 00:11:21.09\00:11:26.81 a lot of rest in between those beats. 00:11:26.84\00:11:29.00 All right, how about blood sugar 00:11:29.03\00:11:31.47 It will lower your blood sugar. 00:11:31.50\00:11:33.65 Now this is for people who have a high blood sugar. 00:11:33.68\00:11:36.47 It's not going to hurt your blood sugar if you are a regular 00:11:36.50\00:11:40.25 person but what it does is it sort of works on an enzyme 00:11:40.28\00:11:44.35 action and it changes the glucose in your blood, that's 00:11:44.38\00:11:48.29 your blood sugar, into glycogen and that is your stored sugar, 00:11:48.32\00:11:52.65 it stores it in the liver and it stores it in the muscles... 00:11:52.68\00:11:55.50 so that basically your blood glucose is going 00:11:55.53\00:12:00.52 down just by a sunbath. 00:12:00.55\00:12:01.52 I know a young man who is a juvenile diabetic. 00:12:02.05\00:12:05.93 He is in his mid 30s. 00:12:05.96\00:12:07.79 He has no manifestations, physical manifestations 00:12:07.82\00:12:10.97 of juvenile diabetes. 00:12:11.00\00:12:13.00 But he has learned how to control his blood sugar by his 00:12:13.03\00:12:16.81 diet, by exercise and by sunshine. 00:12:16.84\00:12:19.68 Now, yes, he does take some insulin but as a maintenance 00:12:19.71\00:12:23.50 dose, because he's got his body finely-tuned and in control 00:12:23.53\00:12:28.47 of his own intelligence and he can take care of it that way. 00:12:28.50\00:12:32.51 The immune response goes up when we get sunbaths, 00:12:32.54\00:12:38.56 also through this whole mechanism... the immune response 00:12:38.59\00:12:41.73 is encouraged by a healthy condition of the blood. 00:12:41.76\00:12:45.64 Our blood fats go down, the oxygen comes up, therefore, 00:12:45.67\00:12:49.84 our immune system is stronger and it raises, as 00:12:49.87\00:12:52.97 Brother Champen already mentioned, our white blood cells 00:12:53.00\00:12:55.59 in our body. 00:12:55.62\00:12:56.77 Energy and endurance also are increased by the application 00:12:56.80\00:13:02.98 of the sun to the body. 00:13:03.01\00:13:03.98 How does that work? 00:13:03.99\00:13:04.96 Again, we've got to go back through those steps. 00:13:04.97\00:13:07.19 Energy, what gives your body energy? 00:13:07.22\00:13:10.14 Now, granted one of the things that we've not talked about 00:13:10.17\00:13:13.17 is drinking water, that is one of them, but the other one is 00:13:13.20\00:13:16.31 oxygen. 00:13:16.34\00:13:17.34 Now, if you're not getting oxygen... 00:13:17.37\00:13:19.82 You ever notice how when you run what happens? 00:13:19.85\00:13:22.11 You start breathing deeper because your body says, 00:13:22.14\00:13:24.65 "we need more oxygen" and so you start breathing deeper 00:13:24.68\00:13:28.39 getting more oxygen to the tissues. 00:13:28.42\00:13:30.40 Well, if you have less fat, 00:13:30.43\00:13:33.17 if your blood is pumping better and stronger and more 00:13:33.20\00:13:36.87 effectively, you're pumping more blood with more oxygen 00:13:36.90\00:13:40.80 to the tissues, therefore, increasing your strength. 00:13:40.83\00:13:44.25 How about the endurance thing? 00:13:44.28\00:13:45.77 What gives you endurance? 00:13:45.80\00:13:47.57 What do you need for endurance? 00:13:47.60\00:13:48.76 You need the energy. 00:13:48.79\00:13:49.78 Where do you get the energy from 00:13:49.81\00:13:51.07 You get the energy from the glucose. 00:13:51.10\00:13:52.98 We've already told you that by the sunshine converting glucose 00:13:53.01\00:13:57.37 into glycogen, which is the stored condition of sugar, 00:13:57.40\00:14:05.39 in the blood, now it comes out of the muscles, 00:14:05.42\00:14:07.88 it comes out of the liver and when we really need that burst 00:14:07.91\00:14:11.14 of energy, that extra work because we're really working 00:14:11.17\00:14:15.17 hard, one day we've got all the energy that we need 00:14:15.20\00:14:17.79 to give us those things. 00:14:17.82\00:14:18.88 It increases our muscle strength not just because of the oxygen, 00:14:18.91\00:14:23.23 not just because of the glucose but because the sunshine somehow 00:14:23.26\00:14:27.60 They've done studies showing that those people who really 00:14:27.63\00:14:30.87 wanting to get into building their bodies, the best month 00:14:30.90\00:14:34.14 of the year to build muscle mass and muscle strength 00:14:34.17\00:14:38.01 is the month of July. 00:14:38.04\00:14:40.10 Now why would it be the month of July? 00:14:40.13\00:14:41.79 Well, because the month of July the sun is out the longest. 00:14:41.82\00:14:45.41 And you know, I'm often amazed at people who go to spas 00:14:45.44\00:14:50.38 to work out. 00:14:50.41\00:14:52.05 Have you ever noticed... 00:14:52.08\00:14:53.10 I drive by spas sometimes and I look over, I've never seen any 00:14:53.13\00:14:55.99 windows in these places. 00:14:56.02\00:14:57.35 They are inside this closed-in place, breathing everyone else's 00:14:57.38\00:15:00.44 carbon dioxide, laying in everyone else's sweat 00:15:00.47\00:15:03.45 when they could be out in the sunshine, fresh air and getting 00:15:03.48\00:15:06.97 more muscle mass, more oxygen more everything they can get 00:15:07.00\00:15:11.37 from being out in God's nature. 00:15:11.40\00:15:13.18 God has given us the sun for a very special reason. 00:15:13.21\00:15:15.94 And, we have listed a whole bunch of these reasons 00:15:15.97\00:15:18.40 Sometimes we just think it's so we don't have to bump into 00:15:18.43\00:15:20.72 trees in the daytime. 00:15:20.75\00:15:21.80 No, it's so we can have healthy happy, holy lives. 00:15:21.83\00:15:25.63 And that's what God wants us to have, Dr. Thrash, is happy, 00:15:25.66\00:15:28.58 healthy and holy lives. 00:15:28.61\00:15:29.78 Yes, I like those, the three H's 00:15:29.81\00:15:32.08 Happy, healthy and holy. 00:15:32.11\00:15:33.57 And, of course, that's the status that our Heavenly Father 00:15:33.60\00:15:37.10 wants us to have. 00:15:37.13\00:15:38.10 Now, since the time of the flood I suppose, when the canopy 00:15:38.11\00:15:43.50 that we had over the earth in the form of the firmament... 00:15:43.53\00:15:46.01 when that collapsed, and fell in and all the water up there came 00:15:46.04\00:15:50.53 down through the windows of heaven onto the earth 00:15:50.56\00:15:53.17 and we lost that protective canopy there, that filtered out 00:15:53.20\00:15:57.69 all the cosmic rays of the sun 00:15:57.72\00:15:59.92 Since that time, the sun has not always been only beneficial 00:15:59.95\00:16:04.35 to us but now sun can be harmful to us. 00:16:04.38\00:16:07.57 And I have a report here that tells about skin cancer as a 00:16:07.60\00:16:13.52 result of too much sunning. 00:16:13.55\00:16:16.18 In the last few years, because of continued dissipation of 00:16:16.21\00:16:20.94 those protective elements in the outer stratosphere of 00:16:20.97\00:16:25.19 earth's various layers... 00:16:25.22\00:16:28.61 Because of that, we are now getting more radiation down to 00:16:28.64\00:16:33.18 the earth and that is causing us to have more skin cancer. 00:16:33.21\00:16:36.55 Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinomas and the most 00:16:36.58\00:16:40.93 treacherous and malignant of all skin cancers, the melanoma. 00:16:40.96\00:16:45.68 But, it has been found and this report mentions that, 00:16:45.71\00:16:48.96 that the diet can be helpful in reducing the likelihood that 00:16:48.99\00:16:54.02 a mole or a previous sunburn could turn into a melanoma. 00:16:54.05\00:17:00.24 The diet needs to be low in fats 00:17:00.27\00:17:03.91 It also needs to be high in fruits and vegetables 00:17:03.94\00:17:07.76 and backed up by plenty of vitamin C and selenium... 00:17:07.79\00:17:11.72 All of which we can get in fruits, vegetables, whole grains 00:17:11.75\00:17:15.46 nuts and seeds. 00:17:15.49\00:17:16.89 And leave off the refined and fermented products as much 00:17:16.92\00:17:21.81 as we can. 00:17:21.84\00:17:23.31 Now we know also that blistering early in life has a more 00:17:23.34\00:17:27.43 deleterious effect on the skin than blistering even 00:17:27.46\00:17:30.80 later in life. 00:17:30.83\00:17:31.96 And so we want to protect our children very carefully from 00:17:31.99\00:17:36.23 the blistering sun, so that they never have a sun burn. 00:17:36.26\00:17:41.50 And even a little bit of reddening should be avoided 00:17:41.53\00:17:45.10 if we can possibly do so. 00:17:45.13\00:17:48.22 We should protect the skin in such ways as by umbrellas, 00:17:48.25\00:17:54.49 and also by hats. 00:17:54.52\00:17:56.94 Now here is an umbrella... this is a major size umbrella. 00:17:56.97\00:18:01.33 And it is, of course, for more than one person, or a 00:18:01.36\00:18:05.74 very large person. 00:18:05.77\00:18:06.83 But because of the fact that it is so nice, you can see that 00:18:06.86\00:18:11.72 it's very good protection for one. 00:18:11.75\00:18:14.43 Now, I don't usually take a walk with that but when I'm going 00:18:14.46\00:18:18.22 for a walk on Sabbath, I usually take a parasol. 00:18:18.25\00:18:21.77 When I was a little girl, I had these very beautiful ones 00:18:21.80\00:18:25.31 that were hand-painted and silk that came from Japan. 00:18:25.34\00:18:26.31 But now I usually use one that's like this. 00:18:26.34\00:18:32.61 Just enough to give me a nice shade and it's very helpful. 00:18:32.64\00:18:38.66 Now when I work out in my garden 00:18:38.69\00:18:40.81 I take something like this. 00:18:40.84\00:18:42.97 This is a sun hat and you want a sun hat that will shade 00:18:43.00\00:18:48.13 the face as much as possible and make it so that especially 00:18:48.16\00:18:51.62 vulnerable parts are shaded by the broad-brimmed sun hat. 00:18:51.65\00:18:57.89 The nose, the chin, the cheeks and the forehead are those areas 00:18:57.92\00:19:02.38 that are most likely to be burned by the sun... 00:19:02.41\00:19:06.16 And so, of course, we want to be very careful to protect 00:19:06.19\00:19:09.44 those areas. 00:19:09.47\00:19:10.52 Now, as we think about other things that are a problem with 00:19:10.55\00:19:15.85 our exposure to sun, then we need to think about things that 00:19:15.88\00:19:21.24 are problematical for the mind as well. 00:19:21.27\00:19:25.42 Now in dealing with the mind, we know that there are several 00:19:25.45\00:19:32.05 things, several features of our life style that can elevate the 00:19:32.08\00:19:36.78 spirits and make it so that we are more likely to have a bright 00:19:36.81\00:19:41.79 spirit, rather than a gloomy or dull spirit and the sunshine 00:19:41.82\00:19:46.27 is one of those. 00:19:46.30\00:19:47.27 And apparently, it's the very light itself getting into the 00:19:47.28\00:19:51.32 eyes that acts as a re-setting stage for the entire psyche 00:19:51.35\00:20:00.25 and makes it so that we are more likely to have a glad heart. 00:20:00.28\00:20:03.94 So reset your set point there for being glad-hearted by 00:20:03.97\00:20:12.82 getting out in the sunshine as early as possible 00:20:12.85\00:20:15.52 Especially for women, it's good if women go out into the 00:20:15.55\00:20:19.50 sunshine very early in the morning and take their 00:20:19.53\00:20:23.41 exercise early. 00:20:23.44\00:20:24.96 In the morning, when I get up early, I first go outside to get 00:20:24.99\00:20:31.10 my outdoor exercise before the sun gets hot. 00:20:31.13\00:20:34.08 And, before the sun's rays are directly down which are more 00:20:34.11\00:20:38.62 damaging than sun rays coming in from the side. 00:20:38.65\00:20:42.64 Now, so far as exercise is concerned, one of the very best 00:20:42.67\00:20:46.01 times for us to exercise is early in the morning. 00:20:46.04\00:20:49.30 And after a meal, rather than before the meal, 00:20:49.33\00:20:54.25 although before the meal is fine too if you don't 00:20:54.28\00:20:56.37 overdo the exercise. 00:20:56.40\00:20:57.94 But after the meal, if it's mild exercise, it stimulates 00:20:57.97\00:21:02.76 digestion and gets things started with the digestive 00:21:02.79\00:21:06.59 process and makes it so that the individual is more capable 00:21:06.62\00:21:11.47 of digesting food. 00:21:11.50\00:21:13.17 In Alabama, I like to go out in the cool of the day, either 00:21:13.20\00:21:18.70 early in the morning or late in the afternoon. 00:21:18.73\00:21:21.50 Early in the morning when the sun's rays are not very hot 00:21:21.53\00:21:24.94 one can exercise more vigorously than one can in the middle of 00:21:24.97\00:21:30.21 the day, or even middle of the morning when the sun gets 00:21:30.24\00:21:34.35 very hot and, of course, one gets overheated if 00:21:34.38\00:21:37.96 one is not careful. 00:21:37.99\00:21:39.08 One should not exercise just before bed if one is the kind of 00:21:39.11\00:21:46.77 person that exercise stimulates their mind. 00:21:46.80\00:21:49.20 Some people can exercise just before they go to bed 00:21:49.23\00:21:52.21 and they don't sleep. 00:21:52.24\00:21:53.66 Other people are not that temperament at all. 00:21:53.69\00:21:57.16 They get out and exercise and go to bed 00:21:57.19\00:22:00.81 and sleep like a baby. 00:22:00.85\00:22:01.90 So, you have to decide which kind you are... 00:22:01.93\00:22:05.04 Whether you are the kind that benefits from exercise or 00:22:05.07\00:22:08.75 whether you do not benefit from exercise just before bed. 00:22:08.78\00:22:13.80 Now another thing that you need to know is that you should not 00:22:13.83\00:22:18.05 exercise if the area where you would exercise is dangerous. 00:22:18.08\00:22:22.62 If you are likely to slip or if you're likely to encounter dogs 00:22:22.65\00:22:29.62 or unfriendly people, then you would exercise indoors... 00:22:29.65\00:22:34.22 which means that you need some kind of exercise equipment. 00:22:34.25\00:22:36.96 But exercise will do you a lot more good if it's done 00:22:36.99\00:22:41.24 in the sunshine. 00:22:41.27\00:22:42.78 So if you have a sun porch, or any place, even a large 00:22:42.81\00:22:47.04 window where you can put the exercise equipment there and 00:22:47.07\00:22:51.36 do your exercising on the indoor equipment in the sunshine 00:22:51.39\00:22:55.36 and an open window where the air would be fresh... 00:22:55.39\00:22:58.80 that can be very helpful. 00:22:58.83\00:23:00.39 So, I think that if you understand these things, it can 00:23:00.42\00:23:05.72 be helpful to you to know how to handle your sunning and 00:23:05.75\00:23:10.87 your exercise better. 00:23:10.90\00:23:12.14 And now, Don Miller is going to give you another aspect of 00:23:12.17\00:23:15.84 helpfulness in these areas. 00:23:15.87\00:23:18.53 You know Dr. Thrash has mentioned the parasol and the 00:23:18.56\00:23:22.78 umbrella and the hat and I'd feel sort of funny walking 00:23:22.81\00:23:25.56 through the woods holding an umbrella. 00:23:25.59\00:23:27.48 And so, I usually do wear a hat... 00:23:27.51\00:23:29.92 But you know, there are things that we should do. 00:23:29.95\00:23:32.77 Many people, when it gets warm out in the west, 00:23:32.80\00:23:36.40 they take off clothes, thinking that that's going to make 00:23:36.43\00:23:39.33 them cooler. 00:23:39.36\00:23:40.33 And I have found, in my own experience, the more clothing 00:23:40.34\00:23:43.51 I put on, as far as covering my skin surface, the cooler that 00:23:43.54\00:23:47.26 I will be. 00:23:47.29\00:23:48.26 I usually always wear a long- sleeved shirt even in Alabama. 00:23:48.27\00:23:52.41 You see I'm from north, up in Ohio and Alabama is a hot place. 00:23:52.44\00:23:56.93 And I find that I'm much cooler wearing a long-sleeved shirt 00:23:56.96\00:24:00.34 because it's the skin being struck by the sunlight itself 00:24:00.37\00:24:04.53 which will cause some damage, especially during those 00:24:04.56\00:24:07.47 dangerous hours about 10 o'clock in the morning to o'clock 00:24:07.50\00:24:10.41 in the afternoon. 00:24:10.44\00:24:11.88 And so it's best to keep yourself well-robed. 00:24:11.91\00:24:14.71 I have yet to see someone over there in Arabia wearing Bermuda 00:24:14.74\00:24:18.60 shorts and a tank top. 00:24:18.63\00:24:19.78 They keep themselves well- covered. 00:24:19.81\00:24:22.43 In Bible times, in Christ's day they always wore the longer 00:24:22.46\00:24:26.41 robes, because that is a way to keep yourself cooler. 00:24:26.44\00:24:29.56 I remember one time I was in the Philippines, in the Marine Corps 00:24:29.59\00:24:34.01 and a buddy and I were walking out in the jungle and we came 00:24:34.04\00:24:37.76 to a little village on the South China Sea... 00:24:37.79\00:24:41.31 and we decided we would like to use one of their outriggers 00:24:41.34\00:24:44.04 to go canoeing. 00:24:44.07\00:24:45.30 And so we talked with the person, we paid them some money 00:24:45.33\00:24:48.33 and we took their little outrigger out into this 00:24:48.36\00:24:51.71 beautiful lagoon. 00:24:51.74\00:24:52.83 The trouble was, it was in the heat of the day, very tropic... 00:24:52.86\00:24:56.65 The sunshine was coming straight down on us and as I held that 00:24:56.68\00:25:00.71 paddle in my hand, my knuckles were blanched... which meant 00:25:00.74\00:25:06.48 the blood wasn't there to carry away the heat and 00:25:06.51\00:25:09.86 I got an extremely bad sunburn on my knuckles 00:25:09.89\00:25:13.92 as I was out there rowing. 00:25:13.96\00:25:15.78 As a matter of fact, even today my knuckles are more sensitive 00:25:15.82\00:25:19.34 to sunburn because once you've burned it, it's more sensitive 00:25:19.37\00:25:23.16 to the sunburn in the future. 00:25:23.19\00:25:24.73 It was burned so badly that they put me on light duty and I 00:25:24.76\00:25:27.58 couldn't go rappelling the next day, which really broke my heart 00:25:27.61\00:25:30.14 But we need to protect ourselves even our hands, especially where 00:25:30.17\00:25:34.22 we have bones right underneath, it will really give us a problem 00:25:34.25\00:25:35.63 I want to give you a few facts and figures about the sun... 00:25:37.06\00:25:40.18 Because the sun, we realize is 93 million miles away. 00:25:40.21\00:25:43.44 It takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to get all the way from 00:25:43.47\00:25:46.66 the sun to this earth. 00:25:46.69\00:25:48.50 That's a pretty quick trip. 00:25:48.53\00:25:49.89 And so whatever sunlight is striking outside your house 00:25:49.92\00:25:54.49 right now... if the sun is shining, it got out of the 00:25:54.52\00:25:57.34 sun 8 minutes ago. 00:25:57.37\00:26:00.53 Also, about 4.7 million tons of sun mass is lost every single 00:26:00.56\00:26:09.26 second because of the fact that it's burning, burning, burning 00:26:09.29\00:26:12.46 But they have estimated... 00:26:12.49\00:26:13.70 Now when I listen to man's thinking about how long 00:26:13.73\00:26:17.73 things are going to last, that the sun will last so many 00:26:17.76\00:26:19.78 millions and billions of years. 00:26:19.81\00:26:21.28 It will probably last forever because God has made it 00:26:21.31\00:26:24.72 to last that way. 00:26:24.75\00:26:25.75 And other nice facts and figures about sunshine but you can read 00:26:25.78\00:26:30.01 it in the encyclopedia. 00:26:30.04\00:26:31.16 Dr. Thrash, what else to you have to say about sunshine? 00:26:31.19\00:26:33.08 I should say a few words about some of the skin problems that 00:26:33.11\00:26:38.35 come with the sun. 00:26:38.38\00:26:40.33 Aging of the skin is largely due to the exposure that we have 00:26:40.36\00:26:45.81 to the sun. 00:26:45.84\00:26:46.81 And, we can have skin cancer as we've mentioned already. 00:26:46.82\00:26:50.06 We can also get cataracts because of too much sun. 00:26:50.09\00:26:53.83 And, we can get osteoporosis if we have too little sunning. 00:26:53.86\00:26:59.21 So, we need to be careful about that one also. 00:26:59.24\00:27:02.58 Breast cancer is more likely to occur in those who never see 00:27:02.61\00:27:06.64 the sun, than in those who are regularly out in the sun. 00:27:06.67\00:27:10.71 Then, of course, there is the "SAD" disease, or seasonal 00:27:10.74\00:27:14.77 affective disorder that people in the far north who rarely 00:27:14.80\00:27:18.76 see the sun... they have a depression and a sense of not 00:27:18.79\00:27:24.31 being very well because of not being able to see the sun. 00:27:24.34\00:27:28.27 Then there are such things as solar blindness and solar 00:27:28.30\00:27:32.83 cheilosis which is an inflammation of the lips and a 00:27:32.86\00:27:36.77 variety of other problems that can come from too much 00:27:36.81\00:27:40.68 sun exposure. 00:27:40.71\00:27:41.68 But let us not let things keep us from enjoying the wonderful 00:27:41.69\00:27:45.35 things about the sun. 00:27:45.38\00:27:47.18 The benefits that God has built into these are a sign of His 00:27:47.21\00:27:51.95 great love for man.
