Let's seek the Lord in prayer. 00:00:34.45\00:00:36.18 Our loving, merciful, gracious, and righteous heavenly Father, 00:00:37.90\00:00:43.42 what a wonderful privilege it is to be in Your presence. 00:00:44.57\00:00:48.35 There's no other place that we would want to be 00:00:48.92\00:00:52.52 on a Sabbath morning than in Your holy house. 00:00:52.55\00:00:57.23 We thank You, Father, because You have already blessed us 00:00:57.59\00:01:00.25 with Your presence. 00:01:00.28\00:01:01.57 And now, as we open the pages of Your holy book, 00:01:01.77\00:01:06.07 we ask for the presence of Your Holy Spirit through the 00:01:06.42\00:01:09.88 ministration of the angels. 00:01:09.91\00:01:11.72 Open our minds and hearts to receive the Word. 00:01:11.75\00:01:14.82 We thank You for answering our prayer, 00:01:15.29\00:01:17.75 for we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:17.96\00:01:21.57 The year was 1445 BC. 00:01:24.25\00:01:28.85 Israel had been delivered from bondage in Egypt. 00:01:29.85\00:01:34.73 And now they were at the foot of Mount Sinai. 00:01:35.48\00:01:39.90 And as they were there at the foot of Mount Sinai, 00:01:40.90\00:01:43.70 God told Moses to come up on the mount because God had a 00:01:43.73\00:01:48.96 special message that He wanted Moses to deliver to the people. 00:01:48.99\00:01:54.45 That message is found in Exodus chapter 19 00:01:55.54\00:01:59.06 and verses 1 through 6. 00:01:59.09\00:02:01.98 And I'm going to read those verses. 00:02:02.18\00:02:03.61 There are several very important items of information there. 00:02:03.64\00:02:07.23 Exodus 19 and verses 1 through 6. 00:02:07.43\00:02:11.34 Remember that God has just delivered Israel 00:02:11.37\00:02:13.56 from bondage in Egypt. 00:02:13.59\00:02:15.19 This is about three months later, they're at Mount Sinai. 00:02:15.45\00:02:18.25 Or in the third month, rather. 00:02:18.28\00:02:19.47 They're at Mount Sinai and God tells Moses, 00:02:19.50\00:02:22.10 "Come up, I have a message for you to give to Israel." 00:02:22.13\00:02:24.57 This is what it says. 00:02:24.60\00:02:25.88 So God is going to give the message to Moses 00:03:01.68\00:03:04.09 to give to the people. 00:03:04.12\00:03:05.15 Verse 4... 00:03:05.18\00:03:06.23 God is saying, "I took you away from Pharaoh 00:03:22.61\00:03:25.43 and I brought you to Myself. 00:03:25.46\00:03:27.90 I performed this great act of deliverance from bondage." 00:03:27.93\00:03:32.36 And then notice verse 5. 00:03:33.13\00:03:35.00 "Now therefore, if..." 00:03:35.20\00:03:37.94 This is a conditional word. 00:03:38.72\00:03:40.60 Was the election of Israel conditional, yes or no? 00:04:02.52\00:04:06.00 Absolutely, it was conditioned on their obedience 00:04:06.40\00:04:09.08 to the covenant. 00:04:09.11\00:04:11.29 Notice verse 6. 00:04:11.32\00:04:12.88 So God is saying through Moses to Israel, 00:04:26.16\00:04:28.60 "I want to make a covenant with you. 00:04:28.63\00:04:30.64 I want you to be My special people, My special treasure. 00:04:31.06\00:04:34.29 I want you to be priests to the nations. 00:04:34.32\00:04:36.40 I want you to share the gospel with the world. 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.88 Are you willing to accept the terms of the covenant, 00:04:39.54\00:04:42.59 obey My voice and be faithful to the covenant, yes or no?" 00:04:42.62\00:04:48.14 And so Moses comes down and he delivers the message to Israel. 00:04:48.55\00:04:52.58 Let's read Exodus 19:7-8 where you find the response of Israel. 00:04:52.69\00:04:57.87 Exodus 19 verses 7 and 8. 00:04:57.90\00:05:00.87 Did they agree to enter the covenant, yes or no? 00:05:25.23\00:05:28.43 Did they agree to obey God's voice and be faithful? 00:05:28.80\00:05:32.10 Absolutely. 00:05:32.30\00:05:33.39 And now notice the end of verse 8. 00:05:33.63\00:05:36.76 And now you have a covenant. 00:05:42.52\00:05:45.29 God offers the covenant on condition of obedience, 00:05:45.32\00:05:48.60 and Israel says, "All that the Lord has said, that we will do." 00:05:48.63\00:05:54.70 Now God sealed off this covenant later on after 00:05:55.51\00:06:00.03 the tabernacle was built when the Shekinah Glory of God 00:06:00.06\00:06:04.69 entered the Sanctuary to dwell among God's people. 00:06:04.89\00:06:09.42 Let's read about that in Exodus chapter 40 and verse 34. 00:06:09.45\00:06:13.88 Exodus chapter 40 and verse 34. 00:06:13.91\00:06:17.06 This is the capstone. 00:06:17.36\00:06:18.80 God and Israel have made a covenant. 00:06:18.83\00:06:20.78 Now Moses builds a tabernacle, 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.40 and God's glory comes into the tabernacle. 00:06:23.61\00:06:28.24 God is saying, "I will be your God and you will be My people." 00:06:28.27\00:06:34.53 Exodus 40 verse 34 says... 00:06:34.72\00:06:37.23 And so now the covenant was complete. 00:06:46.11\00:06:48.87 God was in their midst and Israel was His people. 00:06:49.36\00:06:54.16 Later on, God told Solomon to build a more 00:06:54.86\00:06:58.50 permanent structure for Him to dwell in. 00:06:58.53\00:07:02.11 This temple was built in the year 960, or it was 00:07:02.75\00:07:06.68 finished in the year 960 BC. 00:07:06.71\00:07:10.26 And after the temple was built, once again God sealed 00:07:10.74\00:07:15.77 His presence with Israel by coming as the Glory 00:07:15.80\00:07:19.97 into Solomon's temple. 00:07:20.00\00:07:22.31 Let's read that in 1 Kings chapter 8 and verses 10 and 11 00:07:22.52\00:07:27.47 how the glory of God came into Solomon's temple. 00:07:27.50\00:07:31.94 By the way, that's a misnomer because it was really 00:07:32.24\00:07:34.48 God's temple built by Solomon. 00:07:34.51\00:07:37.08 And so it says there in 1 Kings chapter 8... 00:07:37.48\00:07:40.25 Now it just so happens that from 1445 BC, for a period of about 00:08:01.78\00:08:08.12 800 years, Israel was continually rebellious 00:08:08.15\00:08:13.93 to God and to His covenant. 00:08:13.96\00:08:15.93 Even though God sent messenger after messenger after messenger 00:08:16.34\00:08:20.79 calling Israel to be faithful, calling them back to their 00:08:20.82\00:08:24.66 covenant that they had made with the Lord, 00:08:24.69\00:08:26.70 800 years was a history of open rebellion against the Lord. 00:08:26.73\00:08:32.09 Let's read this in 2 Chronicles chapter 36 and verses 00:08:32.40\00:08:37.04 14 through 16. 00:08:37.07\00:08:38.95 2 Chronicles chapter 36 and verses 14 through 16. 00:08:38.98\00:08:44.16 Here, the chronicler is telling the story of the 00:08:44.59\00:08:48.36 history of Israel. 00:08:48.39\00:08:49.82 And it says... 00:08:49.85\00:08:50.88 I want you to remember, "abominations" is a key word. 00:09:02.66\00:09:04.42 So did God send messages calling them to 00:09:28.90\00:09:32.24 abandon their abominations? 00:09:32.27\00:09:34.82 Absolutely. 00:09:34.85\00:09:35.89 How did they react to God's warnings? 00:09:36.43\00:09:39.14 Verse 16... 00:09:39.47\00:09:40.78 In fact, the covenant that God made with Israel 00:09:56.94\00:09:59.62 at Mount Sinai was a marriage covenant. 00:09:59.65\00:10:02.29 In other words, God married Israel. 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.85 He wanted Israel to be His wife. 00:10:06.05\00:10:07.86 You say, where does the Bible say that? 00:10:07.89\00:10:09.53 If you read the book of Ezekiel, 00:10:09.89\00:10:12.04 actually Jeremiah chapter 31 and verse 32, 00:10:12.07\00:10:15.83 God speaking about Sinai says, "I made a marriage covenant 00:10:15.86\00:10:21.44 with Israel at Mount Sinai." 00:10:21.47\00:10:23.25 And yet prophet after prophet says that Israel 00:10:23.28\00:10:27.71 played the harlot. 00:10:27.74\00:10:30.02 In other words, she had other lovers because she followed 00:10:30.32\00:10:33.42 the abominations of the nations. 00:10:33.45\00:10:35.65 Let's read one of those texts in Ezekiel chapter 16 and verse 15. 00:10:35.68\00:10:40.99 Ezekiel chapter 16 and verse 15. 00:10:41.02\00:10:44.43 Here, God is speaking to Israel and He says... 00:10:45.05\00:10:47.76 "But you trusted in your own beauty and played..." What? 00:10:47.79\00:10:53.60 "...played the harlot because of your fame 00:10:54.11\00:10:57.96 and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by 00:10:57.99\00:11:03.86 who would have it." 00:11:03.89\00:11:05.34 And so Israel practiced the abominations of the nations. 00:11:05.62\00:11:09.06 She became a harlot. 00:11:09.09\00:11:10.55 In other words, she broke her marriage covenant. 00:11:10.58\00:11:14.15 And so the messengers or the prophets are God's lawyers, 00:11:15.06\00:11:20.95 so to speak, in divorce court. 00:11:20.98\00:11:22.64 And God is saying, "I want a divorce. 00:11:22.67\00:11:24.85 I want out of this covenant. 00:11:24.88\00:11:26.80 Because you are committing acts of abomination and harlotry 00:11:26.83\00:11:31.75 with the nations." 00:11:31.78\00:11:33.28 Finally at the end of the 800 years of constant rebellion, 00:11:33.81\00:11:38.69 God decided that He would come and He would judge His people 00:11:38.72\00:11:42.96 for their wickedness and for their abominations. 00:11:42.99\00:11:45.80 And so it was that in the year 592 BC, according to 00:11:46.22\00:11:50.61 Ezekiel chapter 1 and verse 4, God came to the Jerusalem 00:11:50.64\00:11:57.22 temple to perform a work of judgment there in the temple. 00:11:57.25\00:12:02.43 Let's read that passage that is found in Ezekiel chapter 1 00:12:03.02\00:12:06.55 and verse 4 about the coming of God to the Jerusalem temple 00:12:06.58\00:12:11.24 to judge His people for their abominations. 00:12:11.27\00:12:14.76 It says there in Ezekiel chapter 1 and verse 4... 00:12:14.79\00:12:17.72 And if you continue reading the following chapters, 00:12:38.49\00:12:40.46 you'll find that this is God. 00:12:40.49\00:12:42.27 He's coming from the north and He arrives by way of the east 00:12:42.30\00:12:45.62 and He's coming to the Jerusalem temple to perform 00:12:45.82\00:12:49.61 a work of judgment because of the abominations of Israel. 00:12:49.64\00:12:53.81 Now we don't have time to read from chapter 8, 00:12:53.91\00:12:56.74 but the chapter that really speaks about the abominations 00:12:56.77\00:13:01.36 that were being committed among God's people 00:13:01.39\00:13:03.41 is in Ezekiel chapter 8. 00:13:03.61\00:13:05.50 God shows Ezekiel an abomination that's being committed by 00:13:05.70\00:13:08.68 his own people. 00:13:08.71\00:13:09.77 And Ezekiel says, "Lord, that's terrible." 00:13:09.80\00:13:12.29 God says, "You haven't seen anything yet. 00:13:12.32\00:13:13.94 I'm going to show you a greater abomination than this." 00:13:13.97\00:13:16.55 And then God shows him a greater abomination. 00:13:16.58\00:13:18.76 And Ezekiel says, "Certainly there can't be anything 00:13:19.13\00:13:21.67 worse than this." 00:13:21.70\00:13:22.73 And God says, "You haven't seen anything yet. 00:13:22.76\00:13:24.63 I'm going to show you a greater abomination yet 00:13:24.66\00:13:26.96 that's being committed among My people." 00:13:26.99\00:13:28.67 And what is at the very top of the list 00:13:29.20\00:13:32.46 is that the very religious leaders had their backs 00:13:33.08\00:13:36.28 to the temple of God and their faces were to the east, 00:13:36.31\00:13:39.95 and they were worshipping the sun. 00:13:40.15\00:13:42.90 And because Israel was committing all of these 00:13:44.48\00:13:46.98 abominations, because they had broken their marriage covenant 00:13:47.01\00:13:49.72 with the Lord, the Lord came to the temple and He says, 00:13:49.75\00:13:52.28 "I'm going to perform a work of separation of those who are 00:13:52.31\00:13:56.29 righteous from those who are not righteous." 00:13:56.32\00:13:59.97 And that judgment is spoken of in Ezekiel chapter 9 00:14:00.35\00:14:03.61 and verses 1 through 6. 00:14:03.64\00:14:05.48 Notice what we find there in Ezekiel chapter 9 00:14:05.88\00:14:08.72 and verses 1 through 6. 00:14:08.92\00:14:10.88 The city is Jerusalem. 00:14:18.23\00:14:19.32 The battle ax is a weapon. 00:14:31.09\00:14:33.03 The man is Jesus Christ, the High Priest. 00:14:36.30\00:14:38.90 The bronze altar is in the court. 00:14:50.87\00:14:52.22 Was everybody in Jerusalem practicing these abominations? 00:15:27.12\00:15:31.49 No. 00:15:31.79\00:15:32.85 Did those faithful ones need to be separated 00:15:32.95\00:15:35.74 from the unfaithful before destruction came? 00:15:35.77\00:15:38.87 Absolutely. 00:15:38.90\00:15:39.98 And so it says in verse 4... 00:15:40.01\00:15:42.74 In other words, after the separation is made, 00:16:00.21\00:16:02.48 after the righteous are separated from the unrighteous. 00:16:02.51\00:16:05.84 This is what God came for in chapter 1, 00:16:05.87\00:16:08.55 was to judge Israel for their unfaithfulness 00:16:08.58\00:16:11.75 to the marriage covenant. 00:16:11.78\00:16:13.02 It says... 00:16:13.05\00:16:14.08 That is, at the temple the destruction would begin. 00:16:40.67\00:16:43.91 After this work of judgment was finished 00:16:50.81\00:16:53.15 of separating the righteous from the unrighteous 00:16:53.18\00:16:55.73 before destruction came, the Bible tells us 00:16:55.76\00:16:59.59 that the Shekinah Glory of God departed the temple. 00:16:59.79\00:17:04.74 Notice Ezekiel chapter 10. 00:17:04.95\00:17:06.74 This is where the Shekinah Glory that had come in chapter 1 00:17:06.77\00:17:10.83 to perform a work of judgment now is going to 00:17:10.86\00:17:13.04 leave the temple. 00:17:13.07\00:17:14.86 Ezekiel chapter 10 and verse 19 speaks about the departure 00:17:14.89\00:17:20.14 of the glory of God from the temple after He finished 00:17:20.17\00:17:23.25 the work of judgment. 00:17:23.28\00:17:24.32 It says there, "And the cherubim lifted their wings 00:17:24.35\00:17:28.91 and mounted up from the earth in my sight. 00:17:28.94\00:17:32.28 When they went out, the wheels were beside them..." 00:17:32.68\00:17:36.57 The wheels are the wheels of God's chariot or God's throne. 00:17:36.60\00:17:40.21 And notice what it continues saying. 00:17:41.02\00:17:43.00 "..and they stood at the door of the east gate 00:17:43.03\00:17:47.65 of the Lord's house..." 00:17:47.68\00:17:49.24 That is the gate that faces the Mount of Olives, incidentally. 00:17:49.70\00:17:54.31 And it says, "..And the glory of the God of Israel 00:17:54.34\00:17:57.74 was above them." 00:17:57.77\00:17:58.84 So notice that the glory of God departs the temple 00:17:58.87\00:18:01.92 and it lingers for a few moments at the east gate of the temple 00:18:01.95\00:18:06.72 which faces the Mount of Olives. 00:18:06.92\00:18:09.10 And then the glory of the Lord departs the temple. 00:18:09.35\00:18:12.71 And I want you to notice where it goes. 00:18:12.74\00:18:15.09 Ezekiel 11:22 and 23. 00:18:15.12\00:18:17.74 This is where the Shekinah Glory departs from the eastern gate 00:18:17.77\00:18:21.78 of the temple and goes somewhere. 00:18:21.81\00:18:23.89 Remember all of this, because we're going to come back to it 00:18:23.92\00:18:26.26 later on in our study. 00:18:26.29\00:18:28.13 Notice Ezekiel chapter 11 and verses 22 and 23. 00:18:28.33\00:18:33.28 Is the glory forsaking the city now? 00:18:51.32\00:18:54.04 Absolutely. 00:18:54.07\00:18:55.24 So it says... 00:18:55.27\00:18:56.30 In other words, it lingers on the mountain. 00:19:07.60\00:19:10.37 Which mountain is that where the glory of God rests 00:19:14.94\00:19:18.36 for a little while? 00:19:18.39\00:19:19.59 It is on the Mount of Olives. 00:19:20.00\00:19:22.01 Don't forget that because that's very, very important. 00:19:22.04\00:19:24.63 In other words, the Shekinah Glory which had been in the 00:19:25.25\00:19:28.00 temple, which was a symbol of God's presence, 00:19:28.03\00:19:30.57 now moves to the east gate of the temple. 00:19:30.97\00:19:33.44 It is leaving the temple. 00:19:33.47\00:19:35.11 It lingers at the east gate, and then it moves and it stands 00:19:35.14\00:19:39.85 for a few moments upon the Mount of Olives, 00:19:40.05\00:19:43.92 the mount east of Jerusalem. 00:19:43.95\00:19:45.73 And then it takes off and it departs to heaven. 00:19:45.76\00:19:50.25 The Shekinah Glory of God has forsaken the city. 00:19:50.89\00:19:54.89 And do you know what happens to the city now? 00:19:55.90\00:19:58.43 Go with me to 2 Chronicles chapter 36 00:19:59.08\00:20:01.73 and verses 17 through 21. 00:20:01.76\00:20:03.76 The abominations led to desolation. 00:20:04.56\00:20:09.96 Are you following me? 00:20:10.35\00:20:11.38 Have you ever heard that expression, 00:20:11.41\00:20:12.75 "abomination of desolation?" 00:20:12.78\00:20:14.63 The abominations of Israel led to the desolation 00:20:15.16\00:20:19.81 of the city of Jerusalem. 00:20:19.84\00:20:22.01 Let's read about it. 00:20:22.04\00:20:23.40 It says there in 2 Chronicles 36 verse 17, 00:20:23.86\00:20:27.16 "Therefore..." Because of their wickedness. 00:20:27.19\00:20:29.59 Remember, we read this when we were talking about 00:20:43.66\00:20:45.61 the sealing in chapter 9? 00:20:45.64\00:20:47.38 It continues saying... 00:20:51.05\00:20:52.20 Was Jerusalem desolated? 00:21:23.10\00:21:24.86 Why was it desolated? 00:21:25.36\00:21:26.93 Because of their what? 00:21:27.03\00:21:28.43 Their abominations. 00:21:28.74\00:21:30.27 Because they were unfaithful to God's covenant. 00:21:30.30\00:21:32.66 Now the question is, was Jerusalem going to be 00:21:32.69\00:21:35.88 desolated forever? 00:21:35.91\00:21:37.35 Absolutely not. 00:21:38.13\00:21:39.35 Let's go to verse 20 again. 00:21:39.38\00:21:40.96 Was this captivity going to end? 00:21:54.42\00:21:56.41 Absolutely. 00:21:56.92\00:21:57.95 Those who are coming to the Sanctuary lectures 00:22:02.88\00:22:04.66 will be able to understand this a lot better, 00:22:04.69\00:22:06.54 the historical framework. 00:22:06.57\00:22:08.10 Verse 21... 00:22:08.13\00:22:09.35 "...to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah 00:22:09.38\00:22:13.45 until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. 00:22:13.48\00:22:16.15 As long as she lay desolate..." 00:22:16.18\00:22:18.29 There's the word, "desolate." 00:22:18.32\00:22:19.39 See, when the city was destroyed, it was desolate. 00:22:19.42\00:22:22.22 "As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, 00:22:22.25\00:22:26.09 to fulfill..." How long? 00:22:26.12\00:22:27.92 "...to fulfill seventy years." 00:22:28.12\00:22:30.96 So here you have the first stage of the history of Israel. 00:22:31.33\00:22:34.91 A first stage that begins in 1445 when the covenant is made. 00:22:35.28\00:22:39.41 Israel is rebellious for a period of 800 years. 00:22:40.00\00:22:44.05 So God withdraws His Shekinah from the temple 00:22:44.25\00:22:46.88 and rests on the Mount of Olives, then leaves to heaven. 00:22:46.91\00:22:50.10 The city and the temple now are abandoned by the Shekinah. 00:22:50.64\00:22:55.24 And therefore, the abominations lead to desolation. 00:22:55.27\00:23:00.17 But we noticed that God was going to give 00:23:00.37\00:23:02.60 Israel another chance. 00:23:02.63\00:23:04.37 A second stage of Israel's history after the captivity, 00:23:04.77\00:23:09.20 after Persia came to rule after Babylon. 00:23:09.40\00:23:14.79 Now let's examine this second stage of Israel's history. 00:23:15.09\00:23:19.90 2 Chronicles chapter 36 and verses 22 and 23. 00:23:19.93\00:23:24.85 2 Chronicles 36:22-23 00:23:24.88\00:23:28.80 You see, Israel was restored to their land 00:23:28.83\00:23:31.62 after the 70 year captivity. 00:23:31.65\00:23:34.04 And they went back to re-establish their religion, 00:23:34.07\00:23:36.99 and eventually their government or the theocracy. 00:23:37.02\00:23:40.24 It says there... 00:23:40.27\00:23:41.32 This is amazing for a pagan king. 00:24:12.95\00:24:15.38 What was he commanded to do? 00:24:23.03\00:24:24.43 To build Jerusalem? No. 00:24:24.46\00:24:25.79 To build Him a what? 00:24:25.82\00:24:27.16 A house. That's very important. 00:24:27.19\00:24:29.26 We'll study that a little bit more in our next lecture. 00:24:29.29\00:24:32.20 And so about 50,000 Jews returned, after the 70 year 00:24:42.62\00:24:47.66 captivity, to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple 00:24:47.69\00:24:50.83 as Cyrus had said that they could do. 00:24:50.86\00:24:53.57 But then they ran into troubles. 00:24:53.60\00:24:55.38 You see, the Samaritans were opposed to their 00:24:56.57\00:24:58.67 rebuilding the temple. 00:24:58.70\00:24:59.73 And so for about 16 years they ceased building the temple 00:24:59.76\00:25:03.02 and they were all concerned about building their own homes 00:25:03.05\00:25:05.78 and beautifying their own homes. 00:25:05.81\00:25:07.30 You can read this in the book of Haggai. 00:25:07.33\00:25:09.66 But then Haggai and Zechariah and some other prophets arose 00:25:10.61\00:25:13.77 and they said, "Folks, let's get down to business. 00:25:13.80\00:25:16.04 Cyrus has given the decree that we can build 00:25:16.07\00:25:18.86 the house of the Lord. 00:25:18.89\00:25:19.95 Let's get with it and do it." 00:25:19.98\00:25:21.87 And so from the year 520 to the year 515, the temple was built. 00:25:22.07\00:25:29.32 And in the year 515, the temple was dedicated. 00:25:29.35\00:25:33.43 But that temple had a serious problem. 00:25:33.46\00:25:35.74 Notice Haggai chapter 2 and verses 2 and 3. 00:25:36.17\00:25:39.48 You see, the Shekinah Glory did not come into that temple 00:25:39.51\00:25:42.48 after the temple was finished. 00:25:42.51\00:25:44.16 Notice Haggai chapter 2 and verses 2 and 3. 00:25:44.98\00:25:48.46 There were some people who were still alive 00:26:05.01\00:26:06.87 who had seen Solomon's temple, or the temple built by Solomon. 00:26:06.90\00:26:10.12 In other words, compared to Solomon's temple 00:26:28.89\00:26:30.99 this house is nothing. 00:26:31.02\00:26:33.83 And yet Haggai made a promise. 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.99 A promise that the Jews to this day are still 00:26:37.33\00:26:39.95 trying to understand. 00:26:39.98\00:26:41.54 Haggai chapter 2 and verses 6 through 9. 00:26:42.23\00:26:45.66 Haggai chapter 2 verses 6 through 9. 00:26:46.06\00:26:48.51 Actually most versions translate, 00:27:05.24\00:27:07.21 "the Desire of All Nations will come." 00:27:07.31\00:27:09.46 It's not people coming to the Desire of All Nations. 00:27:09.49\00:27:11.84 It's the Desire of All Nations coming to the people. 00:27:11.87\00:27:15.01 So anyway, it says... 00:27:15.44\00:27:17.00 He's saying, "Don't worry about all the silver and gold 00:27:32.92\00:27:34.85 that you had in the first temple that 00:27:34.88\00:27:36.12 you don't have in this temple. 00:27:36.15\00:27:37.43 Notice verse 9. 00:27:37.95\00:27:39.98 The fact is, that second temple, at least outwardly, 00:27:53.37\00:27:55.88 never reached the glory that the temple built by Solomon had. 00:27:55.91\00:27:59.34 And so the Jews have never been able to explain 00:27:59.37\00:28:02.15 this particular prophecy. 00:28:02.18\00:28:03.77 Because the Shekinah, according to their way of looking at it, 00:28:04.46\00:28:08.50 never actually came into the temple. 00:28:08.53\00:28:11.33 Now let me ask you, after the captivity 00:28:12.49\00:28:14.76 did God send additional messengers to Israel 00:28:14.79\00:28:17.26 to try and woo them back to the covenant? 00:28:17.29\00:28:19.59 Absolutely. 00:28:19.62\00:28:20.65 He sent individuals such as Haggai, Zechariah, Joshua, 00:28:21.67\00:28:26.33 Zerubbabal, Ezra, Nehemiah, Malachi, 00:28:26.36\00:28:30.55 and eventually John the Baptist. 00:28:30.58\00:28:32.61 This second period of Israel's history is the period 00:28:33.12\00:28:37.31 of the 70 weeks. 00:28:37.34\00:28:39.22 After the captivity God's people come back to Jerusalem. 00:28:39.63\00:28:43.24 They rebuild the city and they rebuild the temple. 00:28:43.27\00:28:46.55 And then God says, "Now I'm going to give you 00:28:46.58\00:28:49.26 a second period of probation." 00:28:49.29\00:28:52.10 And that second period of probation is the period 00:28:52.13\00:28:55.28 of the 70 weeks. 00:28:55.31\00:28:56.53 And God sends abundant messengers to Israel 00:28:56.56\00:29:00.61 during this period. 00:29:00.64\00:29:02.66 But the question is, how did Israel react to this 00:29:03.13\00:29:08.02 second opportunity that God gave to them 00:29:08.05\00:29:10.59 during the period of the 70 weeks? 00:29:10.62\00:29:12.99 Actually when Jesus came, the Bible tells us 00:29:14.66\00:29:17.73 He came to His own, and His own received Him not. 00:29:17.76\00:29:22.68 They were oblivious to what Jesus was going to do. 00:29:22.71\00:29:26.74 In other words, they did not take advantage of 00:29:27.71\00:29:32.11 all of the additional messengers that God sent to them 00:29:32.31\00:29:35.69 during the period of the 70 weeks that they might 00:29:36.18\00:29:39.65 live up to the terms of the covenant. 00:29:39.68\00:29:42.38 And so now we come to the third stage of Israel's history. 00:29:43.07\00:29:46.07 The third stage of Israel's history is actually 00:29:46.83\00:29:50.15 when Jesus comes in the last week of the 00:29:50.49\00:29:54.38 prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:29:54.41\00:29:56.26 You see, God gave them 483 years until the coming of the Messiah 00:29:56.52\00:30:00.44 to shape up, to get ready for the coming of the Messiah. 00:30:00.84\00:30:05.01 Were they ready when the Messiah came? 00:30:05.31\00:30:07.25 No. So then the Messiah comes. 00:30:07.28\00:30:09.39 The third stage of Israel's history. 00:30:09.42\00:30:12.31 And I want you to notice what we find in 00:30:12.80\00:30:15.14 John chapter 1 and verse 14. 00:30:15.17\00:30:18.68 Here is how the Bible explains that prophecy of Haggai 00:30:18.78\00:30:22.80 that tells us that the latter temple would have more glory 00:30:23.13\00:30:27.16 than the first temple. 00:30:27.41\00:30:28.78 Notice John 1 and verse 14. 00:30:28.81\00:30:32.66 "The Word become..." What? 00:30:43.49\00:30:47.34 "...flesh..." And what? 00:30:47.37\00:30:48.61 "...dwelt among us..." 00:30:48.84\00:30:51.57 And then it says, "...and we beheld..." What? 00:30:51.77\00:30:55.76 "...His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, 00:30:56.19\00:31:01.68 full of grace and truth." 00:31:01.71\00:31:03.01 Do you remember when God told Moses to build the temple? 00:31:03.04\00:31:06.41 He says, "Let them build Me a tabernacle that I might 00:31:06.61\00:31:10.88 dwell among them." 00:31:10.91\00:31:13.97 And then the Shekinah Glory came into that temple. 00:31:14.50\00:31:17.77 Let me ask you, who was the glory that came into this temple 00:31:18.28\00:31:22.30 that was built after the captivity? 00:31:22.33\00:31:24.70 It was Jesus Christ. 00:31:25.18\00:31:26.69 You have the common words. 00:31:26.72\00:31:28.40 In John chapter 1 verse 14 the word, actually the word, 00:31:28.70\00:31:33.07 "dwelt," is a word that means, "He tabernacled." 00:31:33.10\00:31:39.14 You know, the Jews were always bragging about 00:31:40.79\00:31:44.07 what Solomon's temple was like. 00:31:44.10\00:31:46.51 Always reminiscing about the great days, the good ole days. 00:31:47.82\00:31:51.26 In fact, in Luke chapter 12 verses 27 and 28, 00:31:51.64\00:31:54.53 Jesus said to them, "Consider the lilies how they grow. 00:31:54.86\00:31:57.85 They neither toil nor spin. 00:31:57.88\00:31:59.80 And yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory 00:31:59.83\00:32:03.05 was not arrayed like one of these." 00:32:03.08\00:32:05.53 Now in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus adds something 00:32:06.78\00:32:09.81 that is not found in Luke. 00:32:09.84\00:32:11.64 After saying, "Look at the lilies of the field; they grow. 00:32:11.84\00:32:14.93 They neither toil nor spin. 00:32:14.96\00:32:16.21 And yet I say, even Solomon in all his glory 00:32:16.24\00:32:18.38 was not arrayed like one of these." 00:32:18.41\00:32:19.95 Then Jesus goes on to say in Matthew chapter 12 verse 42, 00:32:20.28\00:32:25.16 "Yet one greater than Solomon is here." 00:32:25.19\00:32:29.85 Speaking about Himself. 00:32:30.37\00:32:31.67 But they did not recognize it. 00:32:31.70\00:32:33.91 They did not see the glory. 00:32:33.94\00:32:36.07 Question, did Jesus teach many times there in the temple 00:32:36.41\00:32:41.06 of Jerusalem? 00:32:41.09\00:32:42.29 He most certainly did. 00:32:42.59\00:32:43.86 He was the Shekinah Glory in the temple. 00:32:44.17\00:32:47.89 In fact, let's notice in the Bible the last visit 00:32:48.40\00:32:52.52 that Jesus made to the temple. 00:32:52.55\00:32:54.86 Go with me to Luke chapter 19 and verses 37 and 38. 00:32:55.16\00:32:58.84 Now remember what we studied in the book of Ezekiel, 00:32:58.87\00:33:01.25 because we're going to come back to this. 00:33:01.28\00:33:02.63 You see, Ezekiel is talking about the first 00:33:02.66\00:33:05.10 destruction of Jerusalem. 00:33:05.13\00:33:06.40 Now we're going to talk about the second 00:33:06.43\00:33:08.10 destruction of Jerusalem and why it was destroyed. 00:33:08.13\00:33:10.83 Luke 19:37-38 00:33:10.86\00:33:13.73 Here, Jesus is descending from the Mount of Olives 00:33:13.83\00:33:17.33 and He's going to go into Jerusalem through the 00:33:17.36\00:33:19.51 golden gate, through the eastern gate. 00:33:19.54\00:33:21.57 The Shekinah is going to go into the temple for the last time. 00:33:21.88\00:33:25.13 Notice what we find in Luke 19:37-38. 00:33:25.16\00:33:29.36 Remember that Haggai said that, "I will give..." What? 00:33:52.45\00:33:54.87 "...peace in this place." 00:33:55.23\00:33:56.68 And so they're singing. 00:33:56.78\00:33:58.44 This is the triumphal entry, "Peace in heaven 00:33:59.05\00:34:02.36 and glory in the highest." 00:34:02.39\00:34:04.71 But do you know what the religious leaders did 00:34:05.47\00:34:07.79 when they saw Jesus coming in triumphantly into Jerusalem? 00:34:08.02\00:34:11.10 Luke 19:47-48 00:34:11.96\00:34:14.55 See, if it hadn't been for the religious leaders, 00:34:14.58\00:34:16.96 the people would have accepted Jesus Christ. 00:34:16.99\00:34:19.25 But the leaders were constantly working at 00:34:19.45\00:34:21.25 cross purposes with Jesus. 00:34:21.28\00:34:23.10 Luke 19:47-48 00:34:23.13\00:34:25.27 Listen, "And He was teaching daily..." Where? 00:34:25.50\00:34:28.86 "...in the temple." 00:34:29.17\00:34:30.58 The living Shekinah. 00:34:31.37\00:34:32.88 "But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders 00:34:33.91\00:34:39.02 of the people sought to..." What? 00:34:39.05\00:34:41.99 "...to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; 00:34:42.24\00:34:45.78 for all the people were very attentive to hear Him." 00:34:45.81\00:34:48.25 Where was the problem, with the religious leaders 00:34:48.28\00:34:50.21 or with the people? 00:34:50.24\00:34:51.27 It was with the religious leaders. 00:34:51.64\00:34:53.72 They wanted to destroy Him. 00:34:53.75\00:34:55.06 And He was the living Shekinah teaching in the temple, 00:34:55.09\00:34:58.48 according to Scripture. 00:34:58.51\00:34:59.70 Now let's notice Matthew 21 when Jesus actually 00:35:01.04\00:35:03.59 enters the temple. 00:35:03.62\00:35:04.93 Matthew 21 verses 12 and 13. 00:35:04.96\00:35:07.21 A very important verse, or very important verses. 00:35:07.41\00:35:10.53 It says here... 00:35:10.56\00:35:11.59 Remember, He has descended from the Mount of Olives. 00:35:12.23\00:35:14.30 He has gone through the golden gate, through the eastern gate. 00:35:14.33\00:35:16.54 He has moved to the temple. 00:35:16.57\00:35:17.62 The religious leaders, they don't want 00:35:17.82\00:35:19.64 anything to do with Him. 00:35:19.67\00:35:20.70 They want to destroy Him. 00:35:20.73\00:35:21.99 And now Jesus enters the temple. 00:35:22.02\00:35:24.18 Notice verse 12... 00:35:24.21\00:35:26.15 A very important phrase. 00:35:29.53\00:35:30.84 What was the temple at that time? 00:35:31.04\00:35:33.09 It was still what? 00:35:33.12\00:35:34.16 It was still God's temple. 00:35:34.55\00:35:36.01 What did Jesus call the temple? 00:35:53.54\00:35:55.13 This was God's temple. 00:35:56.24\00:35:59.26 And He says, "This is My house." 00:35:59.29\00:36:01.45 And now listen up. 00:36:06.97\00:36:08.03 As Jesus is in the temple, He begins to teach 00:36:08.77\00:36:12.51 a series of parables. 00:36:13.41\00:36:14.59 Very interesting parables. 00:36:14.89\00:36:16.43 And do you know what He describes in these parables? 00:36:16.73\00:36:19.14 He describes the history of Israel. 00:36:19.39\00:36:23.54 The sad history of Israel as He teaches in the 00:36:24.67\00:36:28.43 court of the temple. 00:36:28.46\00:36:29.53 One of those parables, it's an active parable, that Jesus 00:36:30.30\00:36:33.52 referred to was the story of the fig tree. 00:36:33.55\00:36:36.26 Remember the cursing of the fig tree? 00:36:36.29\00:36:37.96 All of the parables of Jesus had to do with the 00:36:38.82\00:36:40.88 rebellion of Israel. 00:36:40.91\00:36:42.29 And how He was trying to woo them back. 00:36:43.09\00:36:45.64 You know, you remember Jesus saw a fig tree in the distance? 00:36:46.76\00:36:49.66 And He says to His disciples, "Hey, let's go see if we can 00:36:50.07\00:36:52.81 get some figs from that tree. 00:36:52.84\00:36:54.38 I'm hungry." 00:36:54.41\00:36:55.69 Do you know what the fig tree represented? 00:36:55.84\00:36:57.81 All scholars in harmony with the Old Testament 00:36:58.28\00:37:00.77 say that the fig tree represents Israel. 00:37:00.80\00:37:03.99 And so Jesus goes and He looks at the tree. 00:37:04.57\00:37:07.57 And the tree has all kinds of leaves, but not one fig. 00:37:08.17\00:37:11.99 And what did Jesus do with the fig tree? 00:37:12.35\00:37:14.27 He cursed the fig tree. 00:37:14.88\00:37:16.96 And the Bible tells us that after He cursed the fig tree, 00:37:17.16\00:37:20.98 it dried up by its roots. 00:37:21.01\00:37:23.89 Let's read Matthew 21 verses 18 and 19. 00:37:23.92\00:37:27.61 Was this fig tree ever going to bear fruit? 00:37:46.37\00:37:48.31 Never. 00:37:48.67\00:37:49.70 In fact, the parallel passage in Mark says that it dried up 00:37:50.08\00:37:54.04 from its roots. 00:37:54.07\00:37:55.36 What happens when a tree dries up from its roots? 00:37:55.39\00:37:58.05 That is it. 00:37:58.08\00:37:59.91 And so He says, "'Let no fruit grow on you ever again.' 00:38:00.70\00:38:03.81 Immediately the fig tree..." What? 00:38:04.01\00:38:06.80 "...the fig tree withered away." 00:38:06.83\00:38:10.35 Was probation going to close without remedy 00:38:11.57\00:38:15.58 for the nation of Israel as a result of rejecting the Messiah? 00:38:15.78\00:38:19.86 Absolutely. 00:38:20.46\00:38:21.62 This active parable clearly illustrates that God's plan 00:38:21.65\00:38:26.23 would come to an end for the literal Jewish nation, 00:38:26.26\00:38:29.79 or the Jewish theocracy. 00:38:29.82\00:38:31.38 Now in the temple Jesus taught another parable. 00:38:31.72\00:38:34.38 It's the parable of the vinedressers. 00:38:34.41\00:38:36.30 And I want you to see the three stages of 00:38:36.33\00:38:38.27 Israel's history in this parable. 00:38:38.30\00:38:39.98 Go with me to Matthew chapter 21 and verses 33 through 43. 00:38:40.01\00:38:44.42 Matthew 21 verses 33 through 43. 00:38:44.45\00:38:48.03 And I'm going to interpret this parable as we go along. 00:38:48.39\00:38:51.26 The land owner is God the Father. 00:38:55.24\00:38:56.89 The vineyard is the city of Jerusalem. 00:38:58.81\00:39:01.10 The hedge is the law. 00:39:03.76\00:39:05.05 The winepress and tower is the temple. 00:39:07.89\00:39:09.16 Who are the vinedressers? 00:39:11.89\00:39:13.54 Israel. 00:39:13.92\00:39:15.00 Notice this is the first group of servants. 00:39:22.01\00:39:24.23 How many stages does Israel's history have? 00:39:24.26\00:39:27.22 It has three. Notice... 00:39:27.48\00:39:29.58 The servants are like Isaiah, Jeremiah. 00:39:32.78\00:39:35.02 The prophets that came before the exile. 00:39:35.39\00:39:37.88 So you say, "That's it." 00:39:50.37\00:39:51.59 No, that's not it. There's a second stage. 00:39:51.89\00:39:54.07 This is after the captivity. 00:39:56.43\00:39:58.02 And that's people like Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, 00:39:59.71\00:40:02.20 John the Baptist, etc. 00:40:02.23\00:40:03.79 So he sent other servants. 00:40:04.28\00:40:05.93 Does this have a sense of finality to it? 00:40:14.21\00:40:16.42 That this is it? Absolutely. 00:40:16.45\00:40:18.37 Who is the son? 00:40:21.07\00:40:22.10 Jesus. 00:40:22.38\00:40:23.67 Cast him out of where? 00:40:41.25\00:40:42.37 Jerusalem. Jesus died outside Jerusalem. 00:40:42.95\00:40:45.52 Jesus asks the question, "What will he do 00:40:50.73\00:40:53.10 to those vinedressers?" 00:40:53.13\00:40:54.16 They are oblivious to what Jesus is talking about. 00:40:54.19\00:40:56.89 But they're going to condemn themselves. 00:40:57.16\00:40:59.05 Verse 41... 00:40:59.08\00:41:00.25 And then notice what Jesus says. 00:41:23.46\00:41:24.99 As a result of killing the son, He says... 00:41:25.02\00:41:28.15 What is that nation that bears the fruits thereof? 00:41:40.45\00:41:44.02 It is the Gentiles. 00:41:44.38\00:41:46.47 The word, "nation," there is the word, "ethne." 00:41:46.67\00:41:50.20 Generally in the New Testament when Israel is 00:41:50.62\00:41:52.80 spoken of it's, "laos." 00:41:52.83\00:41:54.50 That's God's people. 00:41:54.53\00:41:55.56 But this is the word, "ethne," where we get our word, 00:41:55.59\00:41:57.85 "ethnic," from. 00:41:57.88\00:41:59.55 In other words, Jesus is saying, "Because you did not respond 00:42:00.03\00:42:03.72 to the first call, you didn't respond to the second call, 00:42:03.75\00:42:07.06 and you actually destroyed the Son in the third call, 00:42:07.09\00:42:10.44 last of all," He said, "that's it. 00:42:10.47\00:42:13.26 I'm going to give My vineyard to others who will produce 00:42:13.47\00:42:17.42 the fruit thereof." 00:42:17.45\00:42:18.48 And the message was going to go to the Gentiles. 00:42:18.51\00:42:21.45 Do you know there's another parable that 00:42:21.78\00:42:23.24 Jesus taught in the temple. 00:42:23.27\00:42:24.31 It's similar to this one. 00:42:24.34\00:42:25.41 It's found in Matthew 22 and verses 1 through 14. 00:42:25.44\00:42:29.41 You know, when I did "The Robe" series at 3ABN, 00:42:29.71\00:42:32.30 I preached a whole sermon on Matthew 22:1-14. 00:42:32.85\00:42:36.01 It's a fascinating parable. 00:42:36.04\00:42:37.55 It gives the same idea. 00:42:37.75\00:42:39.15 There it says that messengers were sent out to invite 00:42:39.66\00:42:42.58 a people to the wedding. 00:42:42.61\00:42:44.69 And they said, "No, thanks." 00:42:45.92\00:42:47.67 So then the fatted calf is prepared, which refers to the 00:42:47.97\00:42:52.59 death of Jesus Christ. 00:42:52.62\00:42:54.15 And they reject the call again. 00:42:54.34\00:42:57.25 And so the message is given, "Now you go to the highways 00:42:57.65\00:43:01.81 and to the byways and compel everyone you can to come in." 00:43:01.84\00:43:05.87 That's the call to the Gentiles. 00:43:05.90\00:43:07.65 In other words, another parable that Jesus taught 00:43:08.29\00:43:11.16 in the temple deals with the fact that the kingdom would be 00:43:11.19\00:43:15.17 taken from the Jewish nation, from the Jewish theocracy, 00:43:15.20\00:43:18.14 and it would be given to the Gentiles. 00:43:18.17\00:43:20.73 Let's go to Matthew 23:29-33. 00:43:20.76\00:43:23.41 Jesus is still in the temple. 00:43:23.44\00:43:25.01 And now He's coming to the last remarks that He's going to make 00:43:25.04\00:43:28.25 in the temple before leaving. 00:43:28.28\00:43:29.91 Notice Matthew chapter 23 and verses 29 to 33. 00:43:29.94\00:43:34.75 These are the woes on the religious leaders; 00:43:34.78\00:43:37.02 on the scribes and on the Pharisees. 00:43:37.05\00:43:38.91 It says there... 00:43:39.13\00:43:40.16 Of course, they're planning on killing Jesus. 00:43:55.17\00:43:57.25 And He continues saying... 00:44:00.31\00:44:01.67 What does that mean, "Fill up the measure?" 00:44:12.45\00:44:14.59 The cup is going to be what? Full. 00:44:14.94\00:44:17.51 Do you know what that means? 00:44:17.54\00:44:18.65 It simply means that their iniquity is complete. 00:44:19.40\00:44:21.88 Remember in Genesis chapter 15 verse 16, it says that 00:44:22.74\00:44:27.13 the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. 00:44:27.16\00:44:29.69 So they couldn't enter the Promised Land because 00:44:29.79\00:44:31.46 they had not sinned their day of grace away. 00:44:31.49\00:44:34.14 By the way, in Revelation chapter 16 it speaks about 00:44:34.72\00:44:37.28 seven last plagues, and the cups have the fullness 00:44:37.31\00:44:41.41 of the wrath of God. 00:44:41.44\00:44:42.64 That means that they are unmixed with what? 00:44:42.67\00:44:44.89 With mercy. 00:44:44.92\00:44:45.99 And then Jesus says in verse 33, "Serpents..." 00:44:46.19\00:44:49.51 Wow. 00:44:49.94\00:44:51.02 "...brood of vipers. 00:44:51.36\00:44:53.29 How can you escape the condemnation of hell?" 00:44:53.91\00:44:57.24 But you know what's interesting? 00:44:57.71\00:44:59.04 Even though this is happening a couple of days before the 00:44:59.58\00:45:02.06 death of Jesus, there were still three and a half years probation 00:45:02.09\00:45:06.32 that Jesus was going to give to the Jewish nation 00:45:06.35\00:45:08.46 even after He was crucified. 00:45:08.49\00:45:10.02 Because the 70 weeks don't end when Jesus was crucified. 00:45:10.74\00:45:13.59 The 70 weeks end in the year 34. 00:45:13.62\00:45:16.22 Three and a half years later. 00:45:16.25\00:45:17.53 So even after they kill Jesus, Jesus said, "I'm going to 00:45:17.56\00:45:21.27 send you more messengers." 00:45:21.30\00:45:22.82 You might call this a fourth stage of the history of Israel, 00:45:23.02\00:45:25.31 although really it's part of the third because it's 00:45:25.34\00:45:27.34 part of the 70 weeks. 00:45:27.37\00:45:28.49 You say, "Where does Jesus say that?" 00:45:28.52\00:45:30.07 Matthew 23 verses 34 to 36. 00:45:30.27\00:45:33.39 Matthew 23 verses 34 through 36. 00:45:33.69\00:45:37.62 The prophet was Stephen, we're going to notice. 00:45:47.02\00:45:49.13 The wise men; the seven deacons are called wise men. 00:45:49.80\00:45:52.63 In other words, He sends additional messengers 00:45:53.67\00:45:55.67 after the crucifixion of Jesus. 00:45:55.70\00:45:57.62 "Some of them..." This is future, notice. 00:45:57.82\00:45:59.65 See, this is future from that point. 00:46:03.52\00:46:05.19 Like they did with Peter and John in Acts chapter 2 and 3. 00:46:09.35\00:46:12.95 Who was it that persecuted from city to city? 00:46:15.64\00:46:17.79 Saul of Tarsus. And now notice... 00:46:18.49\00:46:20.66 "Because you treat these messengers, these last 00:46:20.69\00:46:23.77 messengers, in this way," notice that the cup is full. 00:46:23.80\00:46:26.77 Verse 35... 00:46:26.80\00:46:28.11 Is this the end of the Hebrew theocracy? 00:46:44.29\00:46:48.95 Absolutely. 00:46:48.98\00:46:50.09 Now, Jesus finishes His remarks to the scribes and Pharisees. 00:46:50.44\00:46:54.43 And I want you to notice what happens. 00:46:54.46\00:46:56.27 Matthew 23 verses 37 and 38. 00:46:56.30\00:46:59.88 We notice that He tried to woo them in the Old Testament twice; 00:47:09.80\00:47:14.10 before the captivity, after the captivity. 00:47:14.13\00:47:16.35 And now notice carefully. 00:47:25.02\00:47:26.62 What was the temple when Jesus entered the temple 00:47:26.65\00:47:29.15 for the final time as the Shekinah Glory? 00:47:29.18\00:47:31.52 It was the temple of God and Jesus called it what? 00:47:32.22\00:47:34.80 "My house." 00:47:35.01\00:47:36.05 But now notice the change. Verse 38... 00:47:36.08\00:47:38.93 Did we see that word in the Old testament? 00:47:44.98\00:47:46.77 We most certainly did. 00:47:47.34\00:47:48.37 And what did their abominations lead to? 00:47:48.40\00:47:51.67 To what? 00:47:51.70\00:47:52.73 To desolation. 00:47:52.76\00:47:53.79 By the way, do you know where Jesus went 00:47:53.89\00:47:55.29 after He left the temple? 00:47:55.32\00:47:56.63 He went to the same place that the Shekinah went 00:47:56.66\00:47:59.11 after the Shekinah left the temple in Ezekiel's time. 00:47:59.14\00:48:03.08 Is this all coincidence? 00:48:04.76\00:48:06.27 No, it's not coincidence at all. 00:48:06.70\00:48:08.47 Notice Matthew 24 and verse 1. 00:48:08.50\00:48:10.91 Matthew 24 verse 1. It says... 00:48:10.94\00:48:12.95 Why was the temple desolate? 00:48:16.62\00:48:18.27 Because the Shekinah was no longer there. 00:48:19.37\00:48:21.87 And then Jesus speaks about the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:48:29.23\00:48:33.03 Why was Jerusalem destroyed? 00:48:33.67\00:48:35.49 Because they rejected Jesus. 00:48:36.28\00:48:38.66 Let's read it in Matthew 24 verses 2 and 3. 00:48:38.69\00:48:41.81 "And Jesus said to them..." 00:48:42.11\00:48:43.55 "Now as He sat..." Where? 00:48:52.04\00:48:53.92 Oh, the Shekinah is on the Mount of Olives now. 00:48:54.54\00:48:56.76 He has forsaken the temple. And so it says... 00:48:56.79\00:48:58.80 And then Jesus begins giving His sermon, His famous sermon, 00:49:09.90\00:49:14.01 on the Mount of Olives. 00:49:14.35\00:49:15.49 And I want you to notice what Jesus predicted. 00:49:15.52\00:49:17.96 We'll only read Matthew chapter 24 and verse 15. 00:49:18.45\00:49:21.70 Listen carefully. 00:49:21.73\00:49:22.87 The two key words that we find in the prophecy of the 70 weeks 00:49:23.46\00:49:26.95 is contained here in Matthew 24 and verse 15. 00:49:26.98\00:49:30.13 And then Luke 21 explains what this means. 00:49:30.16\00:49:32.76 Notice what Jesus says. 00:49:32.79\00:49:34.36 Are those words that we found in the Old Testament? 00:49:41.16\00:49:43.35 Yes. 00:49:43.52\00:49:44.55 And if you're thinking this has nothing to do with Daniel, 00:49:47.11\00:49:49.25 Jesus says, "spoken of by Daniel the prophet." 00:49:49.28\00:49:52.12 What Jesus was referring to was the Roman armies had 00:49:56.99\00:50:00.06 surrounded the city of Jerusalem. 00:50:00.09\00:50:01.67 They had placed their standard, which had an eagle, 00:50:01.70\00:50:04.38 in the ground and they were worshipping their standards. 00:50:04.41\00:50:08.04 And the interesting thing is that God had told His people, 00:50:09.20\00:50:11.91 if you continue reading there in Matthew 24, 00:50:11.94\00:50:14.76 God has told His people, "When you see this sign, 00:50:14.79\00:50:17.95 the abomination of desolation, make sure you flee the city 00:50:17.98\00:50:20.84 so that you're not destroyed when the city is destroyed." 00:50:20.87\00:50:23.55 Was there a work of separation that took place 00:50:23.58\00:50:25.62 before the city was destroyed? 00:50:25.65\00:50:27.18 Absolutely. 00:50:27.46\00:50:28.49 Not one Christian, we're told in Great Controversy, 00:50:28.95\00:50:31.72 perished in the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:50:32.39\00:50:34.47 Because they had been separated before the destruction came, 00:50:34.50\00:50:37.86 just like happened in the Old Testament. 00:50:37.89\00:50:40.27 Now what does this mean, "When you see the 00:50:40.54\00:50:42.21 abomination of desolation?" 00:50:42.24\00:50:43.64 It's actually the Roman armies that surrounded Jerusalem. 00:50:44.01\00:50:46.74 You say, "How do we know that?" 00:50:46.77\00:50:47.92 Luke 21 and verse 20. 00:50:48.12\00:50:50.05 Luke chapter 21 and verse 20. 00:50:50.08\00:50:52.21 Here, Jesus teaches the same thing but He uses 00:50:52.53\00:50:55.42 different words. 00:50:55.45\00:50:56.58 In Matthew, He said, "When you see the abomination 00:50:56.81\00:50:59.71 of desolation," but now notice what He says. 00:50:59.74\00:51:02.12 What were those armies that surrounded Jerusalem 00:51:14.02\00:51:16.37 that gave the signal to those who were inside 00:51:16.40\00:51:18.84 that they needed to flee in order not to be destroyed? 00:51:18.87\00:51:21.37 It was the Roman armies. 00:51:22.75\00:51:23.80 You say, "How could they flee if they had the city surrounded?" 00:51:23.83\00:51:26.09 Well, Josephus tells us that for some unexplained reason... 00:51:26.12\00:51:29.30 We know what it was. It was God's providence. 00:51:29.33\00:51:31.24 The Roman armies suddenly left. 00:51:31.77\00:51:33.65 And the Jews inside the city, they said, "Hey, this is the 00:51:34.44\00:51:36.89 signal that God is with us." 00:51:36.92\00:51:38.01 And they went after the Romans. 00:51:38.04\00:51:39.24 And the Romans suffered many loses. 00:51:39.27\00:51:41.27 Do you know what the Christians did when the Romans departed? 00:51:42.73\00:51:45.63 They all escaped to the mountains of Judea, 00:51:46.19\00:51:48.91 just like Jesus said. 00:51:48.94\00:51:50.31 And then the Romans came back. 00:51:50.34\00:51:52.04 And they destroyed the city and they destroyed the temple. 00:51:52.31\00:51:55.75 Are you following what we're studying this morning? 00:51:55.78\00:51:57.71 It's vital for what we're going to study 00:51:57.74\00:51:59.35 in our next two lectures. 00:51:59.38\00:52:00.70 Now notice Luke chapter 19 verses 41 to 44. 00:52:00.73\00:52:04.01 Luke 19 verses 41 through 44. 00:52:04.04\00:52:07.87 This is at the triumphal entry. 00:52:09.82\00:52:11.63 This is the desolation of Jerusalem. 00:52:36.30\00:52:38.58 Who had made that visitation? 00:52:55.86\00:52:57.98 Jesus Christ. 00:52:58.53\00:52:59.69 Now let me make something very clear. 00:52:59.72\00:53:01.77 God loves the Jews. 00:53:02.10\00:53:04.56 Even Jews who are unbelieving, God loves them. 00:53:06.58\00:53:08.83 He loves everyone in this world. 00:53:08.86\00:53:10.63 When we talk this way in harmony with Scripture, 00:53:11.13\00:53:13.99 we're not saying that we should be anti-Jewish. 00:53:14.29\00:53:16.59 There are many individuals within Judaism that are sincere. 00:53:17.06\00:53:20.72 They love the Lord. 00:53:20.75\00:53:21.78 Many of them are becoming Messianic Jews. 00:53:21.81\00:53:24.13 But we're talking about the end of the Jewish theocracy. 00:53:24.68\00:53:29.05 As God's nation. 00:53:29.38\00:53:31.45 Not all of the individuals within that nation. 00:53:31.72\00:53:34.29 Is that clear? 00:53:34.32\00:53:35.35 There are many sincere individuals within that nation. 00:53:35.42\00:53:38.29 Just like there are many sincere individuals 00:53:38.54\00:53:40.32 within the Roman Catholic and the Protestant churches 00:53:40.35\00:53:43.20 that keep the wrong day of the week. 00:53:43.59\00:53:45.43 And that's why in Revelation God says to His people, 00:53:45.54\00:53:47.93 "Come out of her, My people." 00:53:47.96\00:53:50.58 So let's review the three stages of Israel's history. 00:53:50.97\00:53:53.29 The first stage is the first 800 years. 00:53:53.32\00:53:55.80 From Mount Sinai to the captivity. 00:53:56.05\00:53:58.97 After that, God says 70 weeks more; 490 years. 00:54:00.29\00:54:05.76 Did they shape up? 00:54:06.56\00:54:07.75 No. 00:54:08.10\00:54:09.13 When Jesus came, they were oblivious 00:54:09.16\00:54:11.79 to what His mission was. 00:54:11.82\00:54:13.15 And so Jesus is sent. 00:54:13.67\00:54:15.07 This is the last opportunity. 00:54:15.10\00:54:16.63 Last of all, He sends His Son as the last resort. 00:54:16.83\00:54:21.06 And what do they do? 00:54:21.09\00:54:22.50 Instead of accepting the Son, they arise to destroy Him. 00:54:22.53\00:54:28.42 And what happens to the Jewish theocracy? 00:54:30.09\00:54:32.26 The Jewish theocracy comes to an end. 00:54:32.29\00:54:35.49 And now the gospel is to be preached by whom? 00:54:35.52\00:54:39.05 By the Gentiles to the world. 00:54:39.58\00:54:42.20 Now allow me to read you a statement near the close 00:54:43.76\00:54:46.34 of our presentation from Great Controversy pages 22 and 23. 00:54:46.37\00:54:49.91 We need to bring this to our day, to our time. 00:54:49.94\00:54:53.07 Ellen White here says, "The great sin of the Jews 00:54:54.06\00:54:56.35 was their rejection of Christ. 00:54:56.38\00:54:57.91 The great sin of the Christian world would be their rejection 00:54:59.21\00:55:02.18 of the law of God, the foundation of His government 00:55:02.21\00:55:05.70 in heaven and in earth." 00:55:05.73\00:55:07.44 What was the great sin of the Jews? 00:55:07.64\00:55:08.93 The rejection of whom? Of Christ. 00:55:08.96\00:55:10.86 What will be the rejection of the Christian world? 00:55:10.89\00:55:13.40 God's law. 00:55:13.43\00:55:14.46 You say, "Well, they're two different sins." 00:55:14.49\00:55:15.88 No, they're not. 00:55:15.91\00:55:16.94 You see, the law of God is a reflection 00:55:17.82\00:55:19.88 of the character of Christ. 00:55:19.91\00:55:21.09 It is a written description of Christ in His character. 00:55:21.96\00:55:25.02 So if you crucify the law, who are you really crucifying? 00:55:25.91\00:55:28.98 You're crucifying Jesus Christ. 00:55:29.36\00:55:31.25 Because the law is a reflection of Him. 00:55:31.28\00:55:33.18 Now I find it very interesting that in the Christian 00:55:33.83\00:55:37.49 church today, in churches today, you hear statements such as, 00:55:37.52\00:55:40.52 "The law was nailed to the cross." 00:55:40.72\00:55:42.29 "No one can keep it." 00:55:42.32\00:55:43.50 "It was for the Jews." 00:55:43.53\00:55:44.98 "We're not under law, but under grace." 00:55:45.01\00:55:47.02 "We're not under the letter, but under the spirit." 00:55:47.05\00:55:49.30 "Only believe and ye shall be saved." 00:55:49.33\00:55:51.43 You hear that from the pulpit. 00:55:52.51\00:55:53.89 But in the political arena, you hear a different tune. 00:55:54.52\00:55:58.21 You hear evangelicals saying, "Now folks, we need to get 00:55:58.89\00:56:03.64 the government to establish laws that preserve 00:56:03.67\00:56:07.86 the sacredness of marriage and the sacredness of life. 00:56:07.89\00:56:13.47 And we need to have the government 00:56:13.67\00:56:15.42 give anti-pornography laws. 00:56:15.45\00:56:17.38 And we need to post the Ten Commandments in our courtrooms." 00:56:17.41\00:56:20.76 I thought they were nailed to the cross. 00:56:21.45\00:56:23.32 This is double speak. 00:56:25.01\00:56:26.38 This is talking out of both sides of your mouth. 00:56:26.99\00:56:29.39 How can you say in the church, "You can't keep the law," 00:56:29.77\00:56:32.51 "You're not under law, you're under grace," 00:56:32.54\00:56:34.38 "It was for the Jews," 00:56:34.73\00:56:35.88 and then turn right around and say, 00:56:35.91\00:56:37.25 "Caesar, put the Ten Commandments in your courtrooms 00:56:37.86\00:56:41.96 and straighten out what we've made a mess of." 00:56:41.99\00:56:43.99 You see, people have listened to their preachers and they've 00:56:44.02\00:56:46.45 come to believe what their preachers say. 00:56:46.48\00:56:48.08 Their preachers say, "Oh, nobody can keep the law. 00:56:48.11\00:56:50.28 God doesn't expect you to keep the law. 00:56:50.31\00:56:51.89 You're saved by grace." 00:56:51.92\00:56:53.19 And so Christians say, "Good, I'll go out and live it up. 00:56:53.22\00:56:56.35 And I'll have my cake and I will eat it too." 00:56:56.38\00:56:58.92 Are you understanding me? 00:57:00.25\00:57:01.45 So the sin of the Jews is no greater than the 00:57:02.02\00:57:04.05 sin of the Christian world today. 00:57:04.08\00:57:05.66 And the destruction of Jerusalem has a two-fold fulfillment. 00:57:05.83\00:57:08.50 The disciples asked Jesus two questions. 00:57:08.53\00:57:10.70 When will these things be, the destruction of Jerusalem; 00:57:10.73\00:57:13.35 and what will be the sign of Your coming 00:57:13.38\00:57:14.75 and the end of the world? 00:57:14.78\00:57:15.81 What happened with the Jewish nation will happen with the 00:57:15.84\00:57:18.29 Christian world at the end of time as well. 00:57:18.32\00:57:20.28 Did you understand what we studied this morning? 00:57:21.28\00:57:23.10 A foundation for what we will study in our next two lectures. 00:57:23.65\00:57:27.27
