Shall we pray. 00:00:35.81\00:00:36.95 Our loving heavenly Father, as we look at the world 00:00:38.31\00:00:41.47 everything appears to be spinning out of control. 00:00:42.25\00:00:45.56 But we know that You're seated on Your throne in heaven 00:00:46.40\00:00:49.67 beyond the noise and the hustle and bustle of earth. 00:00:50.61\00:00:54.57 Nothing escapes Your attention. 00:00:55.12\00:00:57.12 You have everything under perfect control. 00:00:57.87\00:01:00.14 We thank You that we can trust You as such a wonderful God. 00:01:00.83\00:01:04.12 And as we study the second part of the prophecy of Daniel 8, 00:01:04.94\00:01:11.05 we plead for the help of Your Holy Spirit. 00:01:11.48\00:01:14.40 Help us, Lord, to understand not only intellectually, 00:01:14.93\00:01:19.08 but also experientially. 00:01:19.11\00:01:21.16 And we thank You for hearing our prayer for we ask it 00:01:21.83\00:01:24.14 in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:24.17\00:01:26.95 The first thing that we want to do in our study today is review 00:01:28.07\00:01:32.05 what we studied last time. 00:01:32.41\00:01:34.48 Last time, we were discussing Daniel chapter 8. 00:01:34.51\00:01:38.18 And I'm going to go through this rather quickly because 00:01:38.57\00:01:40.83 we have a lot of material to cover in our lecture today. 00:01:40.86\00:01:44.09 You remember that in Daniel chapter 8, the vision begins 00:01:44.89\00:01:48.70 with a ram. 00:01:48.73\00:01:49.95 And then after the ram, we find that... 00:01:50.91\00:01:54.34 Well in connection with the ram, rather, we have two what? 00:01:54.94\00:01:59.06 Two horns. 00:01:59.72\00:02:01.06 And one of them is higher than the other. 00:02:01.31\00:02:03.24 When does the higher one come out, first or last? 00:02:03.27\00:02:05.94 The higher one comes out last. 00:02:06.43\00:02:08.01 Now what is represented by the ram? 00:02:08.04\00:02:10.05 The kingdom of Medo-Persia. 00:02:11.45\00:02:12.91 What do the two horns represent? 00:02:12.94\00:02:14.91 They represent the fact that it's a dual kingdom. 00:02:15.17\00:02:17.83 And Persia was the predominate kingdom that rose to power 00:02:18.38\00:02:23.02 last, as we studied. 00:02:23.35\00:02:24.96 And then we have a flying he goat. 00:02:25.28\00:02:27.21 What does the he goat represent? 00:02:27.44\00:02:29.43 It represents the kingdom of Greece. 00:02:29.83\00:02:32.30 And the he goat has a notable horn between its eyes. 00:02:32.69\00:02:36.79 What does the notable horn represent? 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.17 The notable horn represents the first king. 00:02:39.93\00:02:42.48 And the first king was whom? 00:02:42.51\00:02:44.03 Alexander the Great. 00:02:44.52\00:02:46.09 And then when the kingdom was strong, 00:02:46.65\00:02:49.21 the great horn was broken. 00:02:49.57\00:02:51.94 And how many horns came out in its place? 00:02:53.47\00:02:55.97 Four horns came out in its place. 00:02:56.28\00:02:59.40 And those four horns represent the four divisions of what? 00:02:59.81\00:03:03.41 Of Greece. 00:03:04.07\00:03:05.30 Of Alexander's empire. 00:03:05.33\00:03:07.55 And then from one of the horns at the four winds, 00:03:08.27\00:03:11.84 a little horn rises. 00:03:12.30\00:03:14.25 And we noticed that it rises from Pergamum in Asia Minor. 00:03:14.61\00:03:18.54 And then this little horn, first of all, conquers how? 00:03:19.10\00:03:22.57 Horizontally. 00:03:23.42\00:03:24.79 His conquests are earthly. 00:03:25.14\00:03:27.46 But then this little horn has a second stage. 00:03:28.10\00:03:31.78 Now it's fight is not against any kingdom on earth. 00:03:32.05\00:03:35.57 Its fight is against whom? 00:03:35.77\00:03:37.96 It's against the God of heaven. 00:03:38.22\00:03:40.98 And we noticed that this little horn attacked the host, 00:03:41.67\00:03:46.53 which represents God's people. 00:03:46.56\00:03:48.50 And we noticed that he also attacked the Prince of the host. 00:03:48.95\00:03:52.27 And who is the Prince of the host? 00:03:52.30\00:03:54.06 The Prince of the host is Jesus Christ. 00:03:54.34\00:03:56.37 And he took away what? 00:03:56.40\00:03:57.95 The daily from Christ. 00:03:58.23\00:03:59.91 Which means, the work of Jesus in the court and in the 00:03:59.94\00:04:04.33 Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:04:04.36\00:04:06.59 And then we noticed in Daniel 8 that the video goes blank 00:04:07.08\00:04:10.62 and there's a conversation between two heavenly beings. 00:04:11.60\00:04:14.91 And one heavenly being asked the other, 00:04:15.44\00:04:17.82 "Until when will this vision last?" 00:04:18.23\00:04:22.33 It's the vision of the ram, the goat, and the two stages 00:04:22.53\00:04:26.98 of the little horn. 00:04:27.01\00:04:28.17 Until when, or how long, will this vision last? 00:04:28.49\00:04:33.92 And the other one says to this being, "Unto two-thousand 00:04:34.62\00:04:39.79 three-hundred days and the Sanctuary shall be..." What? 00:04:39.82\00:04:44.38 "...shall be cleansed." 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.25 And then we noticed that Gabriel went on to explain 00:04:47.24\00:04:51.44 the meaning of the "chazon," of the vision. 00:04:51.64\00:04:55.96 Did he explain what the ram represents? 00:04:56.45\00:04:59.00 Yes he did. 00:04:59.29\00:05:00.39 Did he explain what the two horns represent? 00:05:00.42\00:05:03.08 Absolutely. 00:05:03.19\00:05:04.28 Did he explain what the flying he goat represents? 00:05:04.31\00:05:07.40 Yes. 00:05:07.43\00:05:08.48 Did he explain what the notable horn is? 00:05:08.58\00:05:11.22 Absolutely. 00:05:11.25\00:05:12.33 Did he explain what the four horns are in the 00:05:12.53\00:05:15.07 second half of the chapter? 00:05:15.10\00:05:16.46 Absolutely. 00:05:16.49\00:05:17.52 Did he explain the horizontal conquest of the little horn? 00:05:17.82\00:05:22.12 Yes. 00:05:22.19\00:05:23.22 Did he explain the vertical attack of the 00:05:23.25\00:05:25.37 little horn upon God? 00:05:25.40\00:05:27.11 Absolutely. 00:05:27.14\00:05:28.22 But the interesting thing is that when Gabriel got to the 00:05:28.95\00:05:33.68 part that had to do with the 2300 days, or the appearance 00:05:33.71\00:05:38.21 of the two beings that were talking in heaven, 00:05:38.24\00:05:41.33 he had to suspend the explanation of the vision. 00:05:42.40\00:05:47.54 He did not finish the explanation of the vision. 00:05:47.84\00:05:51.43 And so we noticed that God tells Gabriel, 00:05:52.47\00:05:57.11 "Gabriel, explain the mareh..." 00:05:58.44\00:06:01.82 Which is the other word for "vision." 00:06:02.57\00:06:04.52 The first word is the one that is used at the 00:06:04.55\00:06:06.27 beginning of the chapter. 00:06:06.30\00:06:07.67 "...explain the mareh," which is the appearance 00:06:07.70\00:06:09.97 of the two beings. 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.25 And Gabriel could not do it because Daniel, 00:06:11.41\00:06:17.35 according to Scripture, got sick. 00:06:17.38\00:06:20.03 Let's read that in Daniel chapter 8 and verse 27. 00:06:20.06\00:06:23.82 Daniel chapter 8 and verse 27 tells us that Daniel did not 00:06:24.05\00:06:28.56 understand the mareh. 00:06:28.59\00:06:30.31 Now he understood the chazon, which is the total vision. 00:06:30.34\00:06:33.58 Because Gabriel explained it. 00:06:33.88\00:06:36.09 But the portion that he did not understand 00:06:36.33\00:06:38.69 was the other word for "vision" that is used 00:06:38.72\00:06:41.72 in the middle of chapter 8. 00:06:42.48\00:06:44.11 Notice what is says in Daniel 8 verse 27. 00:06:44.14\00:06:47.03 The word, "vision," there is not the "chazon." 00:07:02.22\00:07:04.29 It's not what Gabriel had explained. 00:07:04.32\00:07:06.85 It's the word, "mareh." 00:07:07.27\00:07:09.01 In other words, Daniel could not understand the conversation 00:07:09.04\00:07:11.80 of these two beings concerning the time period, the 2300 days. 00:07:11.83\00:07:16.62 And so it says, "I was astonished by the vision," 00:07:16.65\00:07:20.54 by the mareh, "but no one..." What? 00:07:20.57\00:07:24.23 "...understood it." 00:07:24.52\00:07:25.77 So which portion of the vision did Daniel not understand? 00:07:25.80\00:07:29.72 He understood the chazon, the whole vision 00:07:30.08\00:07:33.83 that includes the ram, the he goat, the horns, 00:07:33.86\00:07:36.85 the little horn and its two stages, etc. 00:07:36.88\00:07:40.14 But he did not understand the mareh. 00:07:40.48\00:07:43.07 Now let's give a little bit of historical background. 00:07:43.80\00:07:46.36 If you remember, Daniel chapter 8 is taking place 00:07:46.78\00:07:51.58 in the year 550 BC. 00:07:51.61\00:07:54.93 And we're told there in Daniel chapter 8 that after 2300 days, 00:07:55.89\00:08:02.04 the Sanctuary would be cleansed. 00:08:02.67\00:08:04.54 But we have a problem in Daniel chapter 8. 00:08:04.57\00:08:06.83 Is there any beginning date for the 2300 days? 00:08:07.16\00:08:11.59 Is there anything in Daniel 8 that says when the 2300 days 00:08:11.62\00:08:15.03 were going to begin? 00:08:15.06\00:08:16.36 Absolutely not. 00:08:16.72\00:08:18.07 So would it be important to know when the 2300 days 00:08:18.30\00:08:22.86 are going to begin so that we could know 00:08:22.89\00:08:25.46 when the 2300 days are going to end? 00:08:25.49\00:08:28.08 Absolutely. 00:08:28.11\00:08:29.30 But in Daniel 8, you don't have an explanation of the 2300 days. 00:08:29.33\00:08:33.75 They're brought to view, but you don't have an explanation. 00:08:33.78\00:08:36.22 And you have absolutely no beginning date. 00:08:36.42\00:08:39.38 Now the question is, where would you expect to find 00:08:39.81\00:08:42.33 the explanation of the beginning date of the prophecy 00:08:42.36\00:08:45.78 of the 2300 days. 00:08:45.81\00:08:47.42 The next chapter would be a very good place to look. 00:08:47.83\00:08:50.93 Now, let's go forward to the year 538. 00:08:51.57\00:08:55.50 This is the date for Daniel 9. Okay? 00:08:56.17\00:08:59.32 Daniel 8 is 550 BC. 00:08:59.35\00:09:01.77 Remember that before Christ we go down, right? 00:09:02.31\00:09:04.60 Daniel chapter 9 is taking place in 538 BC. 00:09:05.94\00:09:10.33 Babylon has just fallen the year before. 00:09:10.94\00:09:13.68 Now Daniel knew that there was a prophecy that God had given 00:09:14.43\00:09:18.76 that the captivity of Israel in Babylon 00:09:19.00\00:09:22.84 was going to last 70 years. 00:09:22.87\00:09:25.52 He knew that. 00:09:25.55\00:09:26.58 In fact, let's read that prophecy as we find it 00:09:26.77\00:09:30.11 in 2 Chronicles 36 and verses 15 through 21. 00:09:30.31\00:09:34.57 And I'm going to read also the events that led up to 00:09:34.77\00:09:39.61 the captivity of Israel. 00:09:39.64\00:09:41.13 And this is a long passage, but I'm going to read it 00:09:41.49\00:09:43.54 because it's important. 00:09:43.57\00:09:44.83 It says here... 00:09:45.03\00:09:46.09 That is, of Israel. 00:09:47.79\00:09:49.00 The king of the Chaldeans was Nebuchadnezzar. 00:10:15.24\00:10:17.04 So how long was Israel going to remain in captivity in Babylon? 00:11:21.84\00:11:25.38 According to Jeremiah, they were going to be there 70 years. 00:11:25.97\00:11:29.65 But now listen. 00:11:29.68\00:11:30.84 Daniel chapter 9 is taking place in 538 BC. 00:11:32.40\00:11:35.80 Now Daniel knew when the 70 year captivity began. 00:11:36.68\00:11:40.44 It actually began in the year 605 BC. 00:11:40.84\00:11:43.71 And Daniel knew from personal experience 00:11:43.74\00:11:45.67 because Nebuchadnezzar took him and his three friends 00:11:45.70\00:11:48.19 to Babylon in the year 605 BC. 00:11:48.22\00:11:51.32 And so if you go from 605 BC forward 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.86 for a period of 70 years, you come to the year 536 BC. 00:11:55.36\00:11:59.62 And Daniel 9 is taking place in 538. 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.88 And Daniel doesn't see anything happening. 00:12:03.47\00:12:05.73 He's saying, you know, "God promised that in 70 years 00:12:05.99\00:12:09.63 a decree was going to be given for us to go back to our land 00:12:09.66\00:12:12.52 to rebuild the city, rebuild the temple, rebuild the walls. 00:12:12.55\00:12:15.27 Here we are in 538; two more years and the 70 years are over, 00:12:15.30\00:12:19.50 and I don't see anything happening." 00:12:19.53\00:12:21.49 And so he's very, very concerned. 00:12:22.10\00:12:24.16 And so Daniel decides to take another look at the prophecy 00:12:24.83\00:12:28.00 of the 70 years of Jeremiah. 00:12:28.03\00:12:29.43 Notice Daniel chapter 9 verses 1 and 2. 00:12:29.46\00:12:32.52 Daniel 9:1-2 00:12:32.55\00:12:34.21 "In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, 00:12:34.79\00:12:38.03 of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king 00:12:38.35\00:12:41.70 over the realm of the Chaldeans..." 00:12:41.73\00:12:43.40 So what was Daniel studying as Daniel chapter 9 begins? 00:13:02.50\00:13:06.09 He was studying the prophecy of the 70 year captivity. 00:13:06.12\00:13:09.63 Because the 70 year captivity is about to end. 00:13:09.96\00:13:12.87 Now it appears that Daniel was not able to reconcile the 00:13:13.51\00:13:17.25 70 year prophecy of Jeremiah with the prophecy 00:13:17.28\00:13:20.17 of the 2300 days. 00:13:20.20\00:13:21.85 Which, by the way, are years. 00:13:21.88\00:13:23.69 Apply the year/day principle. 00:13:23.72\00:13:25.39 In other words, Daniel says, "God has said that our Sanctuary 00:13:26.12\00:13:30.22 and our city will be desolate and trampled upon 00:13:30.25\00:13:33.99 for 70 years. 00:13:34.02\00:13:35.05 "But now I remember that 11 years ago God said 00:13:35.08\00:13:40.17 that the Sanctuary would be trampled and the 00:13:40.20\00:13:42.79 city would be trampled for 2300 years." 00:13:42.82\00:13:46.28 So Daniel is trying to figure out how to reconcile 00:13:47.69\00:13:51.25 the 70 year prophecy with the 2300 day, or year, prophecy. 00:13:51.28\00:13:58.22 And suddenly a thought comes to the mind of Daniel. 00:13:58.76\00:14:01.41 Daniel says to himself, "Is it perhaps possible 00:14:02.37\00:14:07.20 that God has decided because of the rebellion of His people, 00:14:07.87\00:14:12.46 because they've been so disobedient to Him 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.63 that God has decided not to fulfill His word and end the 00:14:15.66\00:14:20.94 captivity after 70 years, but He has decided 00:14:20.97\00:14:24.12 to extend it for 2300 years?" 00:14:24.15\00:14:27.49 Are you understanding the problem that Daniel has? 00:14:27.52\00:14:30.20 "Is it just possible?" 00:14:30.23\00:14:31.93 And so Daniel now raises to God one of the most beautiful 00:14:32.58\00:14:37.82 intercessory prayers that we find in all of the Bible. 00:14:37.85\00:14:40.88 Daniel chapter 9 and verse 4 through 11A. 00:14:41.54\00:14:44.50 And I'm going to read these verses, because we need to 00:14:44.53\00:14:46.70 catch the context of what we're looking at. 00:14:46.73\00:14:49.71 Daniel chapter 9 verse 4. 00:14:49.74\00:14:51.64 And we're going to go through verse 11, 00:14:51.67\00:14:53.62 the first part of the verse. 00:14:53.65\00:14:55.64 This is where Daniel confesses his sin 00:14:56.29\00:14:59.83 and the sin of his people. 00:15:00.07\00:15:01.28 Because he says, "God has said 70 years the city and the 00:15:01.31\00:15:04.72 Sanctuary are going to be trampled upon, 00:15:04.75\00:15:06.23 but then he said 2300 years and then the Sanctuary is 00:15:06.46\00:15:09.58 going to be cleansed and it's going to be trampled upon. 00:15:09.61\00:15:12.12 How do I understand the relationship between 00:15:12.15\00:15:14.40 these two time periods?" 00:15:14.43\00:15:16.14 And so he confesses his sin and that of his people. 00:15:16.34\00:15:18.65 Notice Daniel 9 verse 4. 00:15:18.68\00:15:20.56 Notice he's confessing. 00:15:35.47\00:15:36.83 What is Daniel doing? 00:16:39.19\00:16:40.61 He's confessing his sin and the sin of his people 00:16:41.29\00:16:46.41 with no excuses, no ifs, buts, or maybes. 00:16:46.44\00:16:50.41 He's saying, "We have sinned against You, 00:16:50.44\00:16:54.21 and we confess our sin." 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.70 And then in Daniel 9 verse 11, the last half of the verse, 00:16:57.26\00:17:01.40 through verse 14, Daniel describes the results 00:17:01.60\00:17:06.61 of the disobedience of Israel. 00:17:06.64\00:17:08.66 What is the fruit of their disobedience? 00:17:08.76\00:17:11.66 Notice what he continues saying. 00:17:11.76\00:17:13.70 "Therefore..." 00:17:13.73\00:17:14.76 That is, "Because we have rebelled, because we have 00:17:14.79\00:17:16.72 not obeyed the voice of the Lord." 00:17:16.75\00:17:18.50 "Therefore, the curse and the oath written in the law of Moses 00:17:18.70\00:17:23.90 the servant of God..." 00:17:23.93\00:17:24.96 This is Deuteronomy 28 you need to write there, 00:17:24.99\00:17:27.93 because that's where the covenant curses are described. 00:17:27.96\00:17:31.41 So notice, now he's talking about the results, or fruits, 00:18:16.47\00:18:19.67 of the disobedience of Israel. 00:18:19.70\00:18:21.42 Disaster has come upon Israel. 00:18:21.63\00:18:23.73 The curse has fallen upon them. 00:18:23.76\00:18:25.68 And then in chapter 9 and verses 15 through 19, 00:18:26.70\00:18:29.93 Daniel now intercedes for his people. 00:18:29.96\00:18:33.93 So you have first of all, confession. 00:18:34.36\00:18:36.93 Secondly, you have what? 00:18:37.48\00:18:39.78 The results of the rebellion. 00:18:39.81\00:18:41.77 And in the third place, now Daniel 00:18:41.80\00:18:44.39 intercedes before the Lord. 00:18:44.42\00:18:45.92 He's going to say, "Lord, please have mercy." 00:18:45.95\00:18:49.06 Let's read Daniel 9 beginning with verse 15. 00:18:49.71\00:18:53.51 Do you notice that he's praying for the city, 00:19:39.85\00:19:41.62 and he's praying for the Sanctuary, 00:19:41.65\00:19:42.97 and he's praying for the people? 00:19:43.00\00:19:44.10 Are those the same issues that were addressed 00:19:44.13\00:19:46.34 in Daniel chapter 8? 00:19:46.37\00:19:47.75 Absolutely. 00:19:47.85\00:19:48.88 During the 2300 days, the Sanctuary would be 00:19:48.91\00:19:51.70 trampled upon, God's people would be trampled upon, 00:19:51.73\00:19:54.64 and the Prince of the host would be trampled upon. 00:19:54.67\00:19:57.30 So now, he's bring to view all of these issues of 00:19:57.68\00:20:00.69 Daniel chapter 8 because he doesn't understand how the 00:20:00.72\00:20:03.15 70 years relate to the 2300 days. 00:20:03.18\00:20:06.24 Verse 18. 00:20:06.39\00:20:07.59 So he has confessed his sin and the sin of Israel. 00:20:28.78\00:20:31.70 He's spoken about the results of the sin. 00:20:31.73\00:20:34.40 And now he's interceding before the Lord 00:20:34.43\00:20:36.80 to pour out His mercy upon His people. 00:20:36.83\00:20:39.43 And then we come to verse 19. 00:20:39.78\00:20:41.73 This is a very important verse because it tells us 00:20:41.76\00:20:44.29 what Daniel was worried about. 00:20:44.32\00:20:46.07 Verse 19. 00:20:46.35\00:20:47.50 There's a very important little word that's used here. 00:20:47.53\00:20:49.98 This is the climax of his prayer. 00:20:50.01\00:20:52.06 It's the last verse that has to do with his prayer. 00:20:52.09\00:20:55.67 Notice... 00:20:55.70\00:20:56.73 And now notice, "Do not..." What? 00:21:06.15\00:21:08.59 What is Daniel's concern? 00:21:09.32\00:21:11.17 That God is going to what? 00:21:11.53\00:21:13.56 Delay his fulfillment of the prophecy of the 70 years. 00:21:14.02\00:21:18.14 He says... 00:21:18.38\00:21:19.43 That word, "delay," is translated in the 00:21:28.70\00:21:30.82 Old Testament, "defer, to tarry, or to delay." 00:21:30.85\00:21:36.35 Daniel is saying, "Lord, do not delay the fulfillment of the 00:21:36.61\00:21:40.62 prophecy of the 70 years. 00:21:40.65\00:21:42.15 I know that Your people have been sinners. 00:21:42.18\00:21:44.26 But Lord, please forgive and please don't extend 00:21:44.29\00:21:47.95 this period to 2300 years." 00:21:47.98\00:21:51.98 That is Daniel's concern. 00:21:52.01\00:21:53.75 So then Daniel ends his prayer. 00:21:54.58\00:21:56.47 And when Daniel ends his prayer, Gabriel is sent to Daniel 00:21:57.11\00:22:04.85 with the answer to his prayer. 00:22:04.88\00:22:06.82 Now before we study the answer to Daniel's prayer, 00:22:06.85\00:22:10.42 I'd like to ask this question. 00:22:10.72\00:22:12.39 Is there any vision so far in Daniel chapter 9? 00:22:12.42\00:22:16.25 Is there any vision? 00:22:17.82\00:22:18.87 Is there any appearance of heavenly beings 00:22:19.41\00:22:23.77 speaking in Daniel chapter 9 verses 1 through 19? 00:22:23.80\00:22:28.11 None whatsoever. 00:22:28.39\00:22:29.60 There is no vision, there is no heavenly beings speaking. 00:22:29.63\00:22:33.43 What do we have in the first part of Daniel 9? 00:22:33.46\00:22:35.90 We have only a what? 00:22:35.93\00:22:37.58 Only a prayer. 00:22:37.75\00:22:39.04 That's an important detail. 00:22:39.07\00:22:40.50 Now go with me to Daniel chapter 9 and verse 20 00:22:40.77\00:22:44.05 where Daniel's prayer is going to be answered. 00:22:44.08\00:22:47.16 Here it says, "Now while I was speaking..." 00:22:47.79\00:22:51.47 Daniel is still talking here, praying. 00:22:51.50\00:22:53.97 Now notice what he's praying for. 00:23:04.50\00:23:06.41 For what? 00:23:06.44\00:23:07.74 For the holy mountain. 00:23:08.16\00:23:09.22 What was on the holy mountain? 00:23:09.25\00:23:11.01 On Mount Zion was the temple of Jerusalem. 00:23:12.07\00:23:15.40 Okay? 00:23:15.43\00:23:16.46 And so he says... 00:23:16.70\00:23:18.03 Who was the one that appeared to Daniel in chapter 8? 00:23:34.35\00:23:37.80 Gabriel. 00:23:38.90\00:23:39.93 Is that the same angel? 00:23:39.96\00:23:41.38 Absolutely. It says... 00:23:41.65\00:23:43.12 That word, "vision," is the word "chazon." 00:23:50.09\00:23:53.05 The very word that is used in Daniel chapter 9 00:23:53.08\00:23:56.26 to refer to the vision of the ram, the he goat, 00:23:56.46\00:24:00.12 the notable horn, the four horns, the little horn, etc. 00:24:00.15\00:24:04.16 So he says.. 00:24:04.19\00:24:05.22 Which vision at the beginning? 00:24:11.97\00:24:13.59 Any vision in Daniel 9? 00:24:15.70\00:24:17.20 No, so what vision must it be? 00:24:17.94\00:24:20.00 It must be that he's coming back to explain the 00:24:20.63\00:24:23.11 vision from what? 00:24:23.14\00:24:24.42 Daniel 8. 00:24:24.45\00:24:25.48 Because the same word is used, the word "chazon." 00:24:25.51\00:24:29.31 So it's the same angel. 00:24:29.51\00:24:30.91 And it says that, "I had seen him in the vision 00:24:32.52\00:24:36.48 at the beginning." 00:24:36.58\00:24:38.33 A direct reference to the previous chapter. 00:24:38.36\00:24:40.46 It continues saying, verse 21... 00:24:40.92\00:24:43.39 To understand what? 00:25:04.38\00:25:05.87 Is there anything that needed to be understood 00:25:07.65\00:25:10.16 in verses 1 through 19? 00:25:10.19\00:25:12.17 No, there's no new vision. 00:25:12.78\00:25:14.72 There's no new dream. 00:25:14.75\00:25:15.95 What does Daniel need to understand? 00:25:16.39\00:25:18.26 Does he need to understand the ram? 00:25:19.38\00:25:21.17 No. Does he need to understand the goat? 00:25:21.60\00:25:23.90 No. Does he need to understand the notable horn? 00:25:24.07\00:25:26.85 No. Does he need to understand the four horns? 00:25:26.88\00:25:29.37 No. Does he need to understand the little horn 00:25:29.62\00:25:32.25 and its geographical and religious extension? 00:25:32.28\00:25:35.13 Absolutely not. 00:25:35.20\00:25:36.23 That has already been what? 00:25:36.26\00:25:37.82 Explained in chapter 8. 00:25:37.85\00:25:40.27 What is the part that he did not understand? 00:25:40.30\00:25:42.58 The 2300 day prophecy. 00:25:43.10\00:25:45.36 Notice what it continues saying in verse 22. 00:25:45.39\00:25:48.57 Interesting. 00:25:58.03\00:25:59.17 And it continues saying in verse 23... 00:26:00.04\00:26:02.68 In other words, God gave Gabriel a command. 00:26:08.63\00:26:11.11 "Therefore..." Now listen carefully. 00:26:19.47\00:26:21.26 "Therefore, consider the matter and understand the mareh." 00:26:21.36\00:26:26.94 What is the part that Daniel had not understood? 00:26:30.46\00:26:32.63 Did he understand the chazon? 00:26:33.92\00:26:35.79 Yes. 00:26:36.03\00:26:37.06 What is the part he did not understand? 00:26:37.09\00:26:38.80 The mareh. 00:26:39.26\00:26:40.30 And so it says here, "Therefore, consider the matter 00:26:40.47\00:26:45.39 and understand the vision." 00:26:45.62\00:26:48.02 Understand the mareh. 00:26:48.12\00:26:50.27 Now what I want you to do is take out that sheet 00:26:50.69\00:26:52.85 that we distributed, and I'm going to go through a 00:26:52.88\00:26:55.49 summary of the whole thing, chapter 8 and chapter 9, 00:26:55.52\00:26:58.23 so you have this crystal clear in your minds. 00:26:58.26\00:27:01.20 We'll go first of all to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 15. 00:27:02.42\00:27:05.45 After Gabriel has given this vision to Daniel, 00:27:06.20\00:27:12.05 I want you to notice how Daniel reacts. 00:27:12.40\00:27:15.32 Daniel 8 verse 15. 00:27:15.35\00:27:16.85 "Then it happened when I, Daniel, had seen the vision," 00:27:16.88\00:27:20.55 that is the word chazon, "and was seeking the..." What? 00:27:20.58\00:27:24.72 Did Daniel understand the chazon? 00:27:25.38\00:27:27.49 Not before the interpretation. 00:27:27.83\00:27:29.48 Because the interpretation, in verse 15, hadn't been given yet. 00:27:29.59\00:27:32.43 And so it says, "...then suddenly there stood before me 00:27:32.65\00:27:35.64 one having the appearance of a..." What? 00:27:35.67\00:27:38.67 "...of a man." 00:27:38.90\00:27:39.93 By the way, that's Gabriel. 00:27:39.96\00:27:41.30 Now let's go on to verses 16 and 17. 00:27:41.94\00:27:44.45 Gabriel is commanded to explain this to Daniel. 00:27:44.48\00:27:49.82 Notice verse 16. 00:27:49.85\00:27:51.64 "And I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, 00:27:51.67\00:27:55.40 who called and said, 'Gabriel, make this man 00:27:55.70\00:28:00.02 understand the vision.'" 00:28:00.05\00:28:02.89 Now that word, "vision," is the word, "mareh." 00:28:03.13\00:28:05.36 Why would it say, "Make this man understand the mareh?" 00:28:06.07\00:28:09.62 Well that's the focus that needs to be explained. 00:28:09.93\00:28:12.49 But what does Gabriel have to do in order to be able to 00:28:12.52\00:28:15.19 explain the mareh? 00:28:15.22\00:28:16.46 He has to explain what? 00:28:17.70\00:28:19.41 He has to explain the chazon. 00:28:20.28\00:28:22.12 Everything that comes before that leads up to the mareh. 00:28:22.22\00:28:25.35 Are you understanding me or not? 00:28:25.38\00:28:26.71 And so, what is the part that God commands 00:28:27.25\00:28:29.78 Gabriel to explain to Daniel? 00:28:29.81\00:28:31.49 He says, "Explain the mareh." 00:28:31.52\00:28:32.89 But in order to explain the mareh, he first of all 00:28:32.92\00:28:35.68 has to explain what? 00:28:35.71\00:28:36.74 The chazon, because the mareh is the culmination 00:28:36.77\00:28:39.81 of the chazon. 00:28:39.84\00:28:41.20 And so it says, "And I heard a man's voice between 00:28:41.23\00:28:44.22 the banks of the Ulai, who called and said, 00:28:44.25\00:28:46.74 'Gabriel, make this man understand the mareh.' 00:28:46.77\00:28:49.66 So he came near where I stood, and when he came 00:28:50.61\00:28:54.16 I was afraid and fell on my face. 00:28:54.19\00:28:55.96 But he said to me, 'Understand, son of man, 00:28:55.99\00:28:59.37 that the vision refers to the time of the end.'" 00:28:59.40\00:29:02.79 And then what does Gabriel do? 00:29:03.19\00:29:04.92 Gabriel begins explaining what? 00:29:05.60\00:29:08.38 The chazon. 00:29:08.42\00:29:11.28 He explains the ram, the he goat, the notable horn, 00:29:11.31\00:29:15.04 the four horns, the little horn and its political extension, 00:29:15.24\00:29:18.97 the little horn and its religious extension, 00:29:19.00\00:29:21.09 how he tramples on the host, and how he also attacks 00:29:21.12\00:29:26.08 the ministry of the Prince of the host. 00:29:26.11\00:29:28.76 And then what does he want to explain? 00:29:30.85\00:29:32.60 He wants to explain the mareh. 00:29:34.03\00:29:35.62 But what happens with Daniel? 00:29:35.92\00:29:37.56 Daniel got sick. 00:29:39.43\00:29:40.63 Let's read Daniel chapter 8 verses 26 and 27. 00:29:41.35\00:29:44.46 It says, "And the vision..." 00:29:45.24\00:29:46.27 By the way, that's the word "mareh." 00:29:46.30\00:29:47.75 "...of the evenings and mornings..." 00:29:48.56\00:29:49.76 Now we know that the mareh refers to the 00:29:49.79\00:29:51.40 evenings and mornings, right? 00:29:51.43\00:29:52.76 The 2300 day prophecy. 00:29:52.79\00:29:54.52 "And the mareh of the evenings and mornings 00:29:54.87\00:29:57.10 which was told is true. 00:29:57.13\00:29:58.23 Therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to many 00:29:58.26\00:30:01.30 days in the future. 00:30:01.33\00:30:02.54 And I Daniel..." 00:30:02.57\00:30:03.60 What happened to him? 00:30:03.63\00:30:04.73 You can understand the confusion. 00:30:05.99\00:30:08.02 70 years; now God say 2300 years. 00:30:08.32\00:30:11.64 Daniel is puzzled. 00:30:11.84\00:30:12.92 He says, "I don't get this." 00:30:12.95\00:30:14.86 And so it says... 00:30:14.89\00:30:15.92 "By the vision;" that is, by the mareh. 00:30:22.29\00:30:23.69 "But no one..." What? 00:30:24.97\00:30:26.43 "...understood." 00:30:27.20\00:30:28.31 Interesting. 00:30:28.34\00:30:29.40 Had the chazon already been explained? 00:30:29.43\00:30:32.10 Yes, so what is the part that he doesn't understand? 00:30:32.64\00:30:35.35 The part concerning the evenings and mornings. 00:30:35.90\00:30:38.35 It says so here, "And the vision," or the mareh, 00:30:38.38\00:30:40.95 "of the evenings and mornings which was told is true. 00:30:40.98\00:30:43.32 Therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to 00:30:43.35\00:30:45.42 many days in the future. 00:30:45.45\00:30:46.67 And I, Daniel, fainted and was sick for days. 00:30:46.70\00:30:48.96 Afterward, I arose and went about the kings business. 00:30:48.99\00:30:51.10 I was astonished by the mareh, but no one understood it." 00:30:51.13\00:30:55.23 Let me ask you, had Gabriel completed his mission? 00:30:56.34\00:30:59.02 No, because God had told Gabriel, 00:30:59.97\00:31:01.62 "Explain to Daniel..." What? 00:31:01.65\00:31:03.23 The mareh. 00:31:03.98\00:31:05.01 What is the only thing that Gabriel had explained? 00:31:05.36\00:31:07.78 The chazon. 00:31:07.82\00:31:10.48 So did he need to complete his mission? 00:31:10.51\00:31:12.84 He absolutely needed to complete his mission. 00:31:13.27\00:31:16.05 And so in Daniel 9:20-23, as we've studied, Gabriel what? 00:31:16.08\00:31:20.44 He comes back. 00:31:20.67\00:31:21.95 And he says, "Now, I'm going to explain..." What? 00:31:22.42\00:31:25.80 "I'm going to explain the mareh." 00:31:26.09\00:31:27.68 And he gives the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:31:28.15\00:31:31.10 And after he gives the prophecy of the 70 weeks, 00:31:31.94\00:31:34.95 notice Daniel 10 verse 1. 00:31:34.98\00:31:36.98 The first verse after the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:31:37.18\00:31:40.32 It says... 00:31:40.35\00:31:41.38 Which is around the year 536. 00:31:44.50\00:31:46.52 And notice, "And he understood the message, 00:31:54.99\00:31:59.29 and had understanding of the mareh." 00:31:59.33\00:32:03.16 Did Daniel now understand the mareh? 00:32:04.12\00:32:06.09 Is there something in the prophecy of the 70 weeks 00:32:06.73\00:32:10.18 that is useful in explaining the 2300 days? 00:32:10.39\00:32:14.79 Do you see the connection or not? 00:32:15.94\00:32:17.58 Did the 70 week prophecy help Daniel understand 00:32:18.89\00:32:26.16 the mareh that has to do with the 2300 days? 00:32:26.19\00:32:29.67 Absolutely. 00:32:29.70\00:32:30.73 Because you notice that before the prophecy of the 70 weeks 00:32:31.08\00:32:34.70 Daniel says, "I don't understand." 00:32:34.73\00:32:36.17 Gabriel says, "I have come to give you understanding." 00:32:36.37\00:32:39.17 Gabriel gives the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:32:39.44\00:32:41.77 And after he gives the prophecy of the 70 weeks, 00:32:41.80\00:32:43.81 Daniel says, "I understand." 00:32:43.84\00:32:45.39 So the 70 weeks explain the 2300 day prophecy. 00:32:46.08\00:32:50.72 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:32:50.75\00:32:52.18 Very, very important. 00:32:53.16\00:32:54.44 Now, let's notice Daniel chapter 9 verses 23 and 24. 00:32:56.70\00:33:03.19 "At the beginning of your supplications 00:33:04.27\00:33:06.16 the command went out, and I have come to tell you, 00:33:06.19\00:33:08.33 for you are greatly beloved. 00:33:08.36\00:33:09.48 Therefore, consider the matter and understand the vision." 00:33:09.51\00:33:12.21 Understand the mareh. 00:33:14.37\00:33:15.61 And then what does Gabriel explain to Daniel? 00:33:15.91\00:33:19.97 The 70 weeks. 00:33:20.63\00:33:21.96 So are the 70 weeks instrumental in explaining 00:33:22.88\00:33:25.85 the 2300 days? 00:33:25.88\00:33:27.21 There's no way you can get around it. 00:33:27.24\00:33:28.82 Now notice what verse 24 says. 00:33:29.39\00:33:31.56 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people 00:33:31.59\00:33:34.73 and your holy city..." 00:33:35.32\00:33:36.84 And then there are six things. 00:33:37.81\00:33:39.76 "...to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, 00:33:40.42\00:33:44.33 to make reconciliation for iniquity, 00:33:44.63\00:33:46.80 to bring in everlasting righteousness, 00:33:47.20\00:33:49.30 to seal up..." 00:33:49.65\00:33:50.75 A better translation would be, "to bring to an end." 00:33:50.85\00:33:53.47 "...vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy." 00:33:53.50\00:33:57.96 Six things that were going to happen during the period of 00:33:58.62\00:34:01.27 the 70 week prophecy. 00:34:01.30\00:34:02.83 Once again, I need to underline this because it's so important. 00:34:03.10\00:34:06.78 Does the prophecy of the 70 weeks have anything to do 00:34:07.11\00:34:09.96 with understanding the prophecy of the 2300 days? 00:34:09.99\00:34:12.20 Is there a connection and a link, yes or no? 00:34:12.23\00:34:14.32 Absolutely. 00:34:14.61\00:34:15.64 You can't get out of it. 00:34:15.67\00:34:17.12 Because very, very clearly Daniel does not understand, 00:34:18.22\00:34:22.62 Gabriel explains the 70 week prophecy, 00:34:22.65\00:34:25.50 then Daniel says, "Now I understand." 00:34:25.53\00:34:28.00 Now let me tell you something about that word, "determined," 00:34:28.83\00:34:31.97 that is used here. 00:34:32.00\00:34:33.16 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people 00:34:33.19\00:34:36.31 and for your holy city." 00:34:36.34\00:34:38.42 Now that word, "determined," this is the only time 00:34:39.01\00:34:41.47 that it appears in the Old Testament. 00:34:41.50\00:34:44.35 It's what theologians call a hapax legomenon. 00:34:44.80\00:34:49.14 In other words, it appears only once in the Hebrew Scriptures. 00:34:49.17\00:34:52.76 Now it's translated in different ways; 00:34:53.16\00:34:55.13 determined, marked out, etc. 00:34:55.16\00:34:57.93 But the basic meaning of the word, "chathak," 00:34:58.26\00:35:01.40 is actually to cut off, to cut. 00:35:01.68\00:35:06.86 Even though it's not used in other places of 00:35:07.95\00:35:10.31 the Old Testament, it is used in the mishnah. 00:35:10.34\00:35:12.74 Do you know what the mishnah is? 00:35:12.77\00:35:14.04 It's a collection of Jewish traditions. 00:35:14.07\00:35:16.11 And it's very ancient. 00:35:16.46\00:35:18.19 And the word, "chathak," is used in the mishnah. 00:35:18.22\00:35:21.58 Let me explain how it's used there. 00:35:21.61\00:35:23.49 Because it does help to understand how the 00:35:24.06\00:35:25.89 Jews used terms. 00:35:25.92\00:35:27.21 Even thought it doesn't appear in the Bible, we know 00:35:27.31\00:35:30.54 how they used these particular words. 00:35:30.57\00:35:33.75 The word, "chathak," is used for cutting parts off of animals 00:35:34.07\00:35:39.26 in the sacrificial service. 00:35:39.96\00:35:41.69 It's used for cutting off the foreskin in circumcision. 00:35:42.28\00:35:47.11 It's used to cut the wick of a lamp. 00:35:47.84\00:35:52.25 It's used to cut ore out of a mountain. 00:35:53.07\00:35:57.16 And it's also used cut or divide the Bible into two parts, 00:35:57.80\00:36:03.20 a verse that you're studying divided into two parts. 00:36:03.23\00:36:06.03 In other words, the basic meaning of the word, "chathak," 00:36:06.13\00:36:09.24 is, "to cut off." 00:36:09.27\00:36:11.34 Now, of course, the big question is, 00:36:13.36\00:36:15.13 when it says in Daniel 9 and verse 24, 00:36:15.47\00:36:18.23 "70 weeks are cut off for your people and your city," 00:36:18.81\00:36:23.12 the question is, cut off from where? 00:36:23.15\00:36:26.53 Let me ask you this. 00:36:28.95\00:36:30.12 When something is cut off, must it be cut off from something? 00:36:30.88\00:36:36.07 Absolutely. 00:36:36.71\00:36:37.82 For example, if you're going to cut a branch off of a tree, 00:36:37.85\00:36:40.29 do you have to have a tree to cut the branch off of? 00:36:40.95\00:36:43.08 Of course. 00:36:43.11\00:36:44.14 So the 70 weeks are cut off. 00:36:44.17\00:36:45.88 Where do you suppose the 70 weeks will be cut off from? 00:36:45.91\00:36:48.81 They must be cut off from where? 00:36:49.60\00:36:51.95 From the prophecy of the 2300 days. 00:36:52.22\00:36:54.30 You see, the prophecy of the 2300 days is the longer portion 00:36:54.33\00:36:57.84 of the prophecy. 00:36:57.87\00:36:58.90 The 70 weeks, as we're going to study in our next two lectures, 00:36:58.93\00:37:02.36 is the first portion that is cut off from the longer 00:37:02.39\00:37:06.27 2300 day period. 00:37:06.30\00:37:07.80 Raise your hand if you're understanding what I'm saying. 00:37:07.83\00:37:09.89 That's what the basic word means. 00:37:11.23\00:37:12.60 It means to cut off. 00:37:12.63\00:37:14.86 In other words, the 70 weeks are cut off from the longer prophecy 00:37:15.56\00:37:20.25 of the 2300 days. 00:37:20.28\00:37:22.53 Now basically what I'm saying is that in 00:37:22.73\00:37:24.52 Daniel chapter 9 and verse 2, Daniel is motivated to pray 00:37:24.55\00:37:30.37 because of the desolation of Jerusalem. 00:37:30.40\00:37:33.21 Whereas later on in Daniel chapter 9 and verse 25, 00:37:33.52\00:37:38.03 Gabriel comes back and he says, "Listen, your prayer 00:37:39.53\00:37:42.70 has been answered. 00:37:42.73\00:37:43.87 Jerusalem will be restored after the 70 years. 00:37:44.22\00:37:48.44 There will be a command to restore and to build Jerusalem 00:37:48.47\00:37:52.44 at the end of the 70 weeks." 00:37:52.47\00:37:55.72 But the 70 weeks are the first portion 00:37:55.92\00:37:58.81 of the 2300 day prophecy. 00:37:58.84\00:38:00.74 Now listen to what I'm going to say because 00:38:00.94\00:38:02.48 it's very, very important. 00:38:02.51\00:38:03.89 70 weeks is symbolic language, isn't it. 00:38:05.11\00:38:10.07 Because we're not talking about literal weeks, are we. 00:38:10.75\00:38:13.27 We're talking about symbolic weeks. 00:38:13.75\00:38:15.85 In other words, 70 weeks; and each week has how many days? 00:38:16.58\00:38:20.30 Each week has 7 days. 00:38:20.56\00:38:22.41 Are we talking about literal days, or are we 00:38:22.44\00:38:25.49 talking about symbolic days? 00:38:25.52\00:38:27.89 We're talking about symbolic days. 00:38:28.35\00:38:29.98 You have to apply the year/day principle. 00:38:30.01\00:38:31.88 And by the way, I know very few scholars 00:38:31.91\00:38:35.35 who would say that the 70 weeks are to be taken literally. 00:38:35.53\00:38:40.52 Because they know that the 70 weeks are really 00:38:41.24\00:38:44.43 weeks of years. 00:38:44.63\00:38:47.20 Even though the text does not say, "weeks of years," 00:38:47.23\00:38:50.02 some translations translate "weeks of years." 00:38:50.05\00:38:52.82 Because they know that the 70 week prophecy is really 00:38:52.85\00:38:57.24 a prophecy concerning 70 weeks of years. 00:38:58.46\00:39:01.59 Now if you multiply 70 times 7, 70 weeks times 7 days, 00:39:01.62\00:39:06.34 how much do you come up with? 00:39:06.66\00:39:08.20 You come up with 490. 00:39:08.66\00:39:11.20 490 days, right? 00:39:12.54\00:39:14.90 Because there's 70 weeks. 00:39:14.93\00:39:16.29 But those days represent what? 00:39:16.64\00:39:18.62 Those days represent 490 years. 00:39:19.12\00:39:22.03 Now listen carefully. 00:39:22.06\00:39:23.16 The real reason why Bible expositors don't want to 00:39:24.07\00:39:27.30 connect Daniel 8 with Daniel 9, do you know? 00:39:27.33\00:39:30.55 Most scholars refuse to see any connection between 00:39:30.58\00:39:33.70 Daniel 8 and Daniel 9 even though we saw 00:39:33.73\00:39:35.99 a clear connection. 00:39:36.02\00:39:37.78 Point after point after point shows that there's a connection 00:39:38.63\00:39:41.99 between Daniel 8 and Daniel 9. 00:39:42.02\00:39:43.52 But most scholars don't want to connect Daniel 8 and 9, 00:39:43.84\00:39:47.14 including many Adventist scholars. 00:39:47.17\00:39:49.72 Do you know the reason why? 00:39:50.17\00:39:51.55 It's very simple. 00:39:51.78\00:39:52.83 If you apply the year/day principle to the 70 weeks, 00:39:53.49\00:39:57.09 which is the first part of the 2300 days, 00:39:57.73\00:40:00.31 you have to apply the year/day principle to the 00:40:00.51\00:40:02.70 2300 days as well. 00:40:02.73\00:40:04.39 Are you following me or not? 00:40:05.74\00:40:07.03 And if you do that, if you take the 70 weeks 00:40:07.81\00:40:11.51 as applying the year/day principle; they're actually 00:40:11.54\00:40:14.42 weeks, but they represent years, the 2300 days are the longer 00:40:14.45\00:40:18.82 portion of which the 70 weeks are cut off, 00:40:18.85\00:40:22.15 you would have to apply the year/day principle also to what? 00:40:22.18\00:40:25.43 To the 2300 days. 00:40:25.70\00:40:27.26 And have mercy, if you did that you'd have to become 00:40:27.49\00:40:30.08 a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:40:30.11\00:40:31.44 According to what we're going to study in the next two lectures. 00:40:33.48\00:40:35.86 There's no way around it. 00:40:35.89\00:40:37.11 And that's the reason, the real reason, why 00:40:38.21\00:40:40.67 scholars don't really want to connect Daniel 8 with Daniel 9. 00:40:41.14\00:40:45.90 They say that they're dealing with two different topics. 00:40:45.93\00:40:48.57 It's impossible that they're dealing with 00:40:49.30\00:40:50.83 two different topics. 00:40:50.87\00:40:51.93 We've already noticed abundant evidence that these two chapters 00:40:51.96\00:40:55.52 are actually very closely connected. 00:40:55.55\00:40:57.96 Are you understanding my point? 00:40:57.99\00:40:59.39 Now let's examine the six things that were going to be 00:41:00.42\00:41:04.49 accomplished during the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:41:04.52\00:41:07.88 Do you remember what they are? 00:41:07.91\00:41:09.55 Finish the transgression, 00:41:10.34\00:41:12.01 make an end of sins, 00:41:12.63\00:41:14.52 make reconciliation for iniquity, 00:41:15.00\00:41:17.85 bring in everlasting righteousness, 00:41:18.19\00:41:20.75 seal up vision and prophecy, 00:41:21.04\00:41:25.49 and anoint the Most Holy. 00:41:25.73\00:41:28.06 Now let's take these one at a time and show how they are 00:41:28.84\00:41:33.13 fulfilled during this 70 week period, particularly during the 00:41:33.16\00:41:36.96 last week of the 70 weeks. 00:41:36.99\00:41:39.72 Let's deal first of all with, "finish the transgression." 00:41:40.04\00:41:43.23 This word, "transgression," is the strongest word 00:41:43.98\00:41:47.66 in the Old Testament for sin. 00:41:47.98\00:41:50.10 There are many words for sin in the Old Testament. 00:41:50.13\00:41:53.70 But this particular Hebrew word is the strongest word. 00:41:53.90\00:41:57.19 Really, it should be translated, rebellion or revolt. 00:41:58.24\00:42:03.89 In other words, it is a high handed rebellion against God. 00:42:04.61\00:42:08.65 And by the way, this is not some indefinite rebellion. 00:42:09.32\00:42:12.21 Because in the Hebrew, the word, "rebellion," 00:42:12.65\00:42:16.46 or the word, "transgression," has the definite article. 00:42:16.49\00:42:20.22 It is, "the" transgression. 00:42:20.25\00:42:22.73 This is a specific transgression, 00:42:22.76\00:42:24.99 a specific rebellion, or a specific revolt, 00:42:25.02\00:42:28.32 that will finish during the period of the 70 weeks. 00:42:28.74\00:42:34.75 Now we're going to find in our study that this really is 00:42:35.38\00:42:38.68 referring to the constant rebellion of Israel 00:42:38.71\00:42:42.29 against God, the constant revolt of Israel against God. 00:42:42.32\00:42:46.63 And Israel could choose to end this rebellion 00:42:47.10\00:42:51.39 in one of two ways. 00:42:51.42\00:42:52.70 The first way would be to receive the Messiah, 00:42:53.12\00:42:55.99 and in this way end their constant rebellion against God. 00:42:56.56\00:42:59.82 The second way that they could do it would be to 00:43:00.43\00:43:03.24 irrevocably revolt against the Messiah, and this would bring 00:43:03.27\00:43:08.08 the Hebrew theocracy to an end. 00:43:08.11\00:43:10.57 In other words, everything was determined by an acceptance 00:43:10.87\00:43:14.08 or rejection of the Messiah. 00:43:14.11\00:43:16.05 They could choose to continue their revolt 00:43:16.08\00:43:19.28 and rebellion against God or they could accept the Messiah 00:43:19.31\00:43:22.62 and bring their constant revolt and rebellion to an end. 00:43:22.65\00:43:26.21 Prophecy, as well as the gospels, tell us that they 00:43:26.62\00:43:29.67 chose the second option. 00:43:29.70\00:43:31.05 And we're going to study this when we deal with the 00:43:31.26\00:43:33.16 prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:43:33.19\00:43:35.44 Now let's go to our second accomplishment. 00:43:35.47\00:43:37.69 "To make an end of sins." 00:43:37.72\00:43:40.63 Notice it doesn't say, "To make an end of sinning." 00:43:41.06\00:43:43.71 It says, "To make an end of sins." 00:43:44.32\00:43:47.29 How did Jesus make an end of sins? 00:43:47.61\00:43:50.52 By bearing them where? 00:43:51.71\00:43:53.41 By bearing them upon Himself on the cross. 00:43:53.84\00:43:56.59 In fact, let's notice several texts. 00:43:56.62\00:43:58.34 Hebrews chapter 1 and verse 3 tells us that when Jesus 00:43:58.37\00:44:04.02 "had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand 00:44:04.05\00:44:09.81 of the Majesty on high." 00:44:09.84\00:44:11.50 He purged our sins. 00:44:11.53\00:44:13.46 Hebrews 9 and verse 28 says... 00:44:13.69\00:44:17.04 Hebrews 9 and verse 26 tells us that Jesus appeared once 00:44:23.10\00:44:28.91 at the end of the ages to put away sin 00:44:28.94\00:44:35.23 by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:44:35.26\00:44:37.58 And finally, Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 12 00:44:38.01\00:44:40.66 tells us about Jesus. 00:44:40.69\00:44:43.02 "This Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, 00:44:43.12\00:44:48.80 sat down at the right hand of God." 00:44:49.10\00:44:52.43 Did Jesus take upon Himself the sins of the whole world? 00:44:52.97\00:44:56.94 He most certainly did. 00:44:56.97\00:44:58.46 Did He make an end of sin not sinning, but of sin, 00:44:58.66\00:45:03.14 by bearing it upon Himself? 00:45:03.17\00:45:04.69 Absolutely. 00:45:04.72\00:45:05.75 This phrase is also Messianic. 00:45:05.78\00:45:08.62 All of the accomplishments of the 70 weeks were 00:45:09.12\00:45:12.14 going to be accomplished by the Messiah. 00:45:12.17\00:45:13.97 You cannot separate the 70 weeks from the Messiah. 00:45:14.00\00:45:17.35 Because it's the story of the Messiah. 00:45:18.08\00:45:20.46 It's not the story of some antichrist that's going to 00:45:20.49\00:45:23.31 appear in the future. 00:45:23.34\00:45:24.82 It's speaking about Jesus Christ. 00:45:25.44\00:45:26.98 Do you think it would be a very serious thing 00:45:27.18\00:45:29.31 to take a prophecy that applies to Christ 00:45:29.34\00:45:31.41 and apply it to the antichrist? 00:45:31.44\00:45:33.65 A very, very serious matter. 00:45:34.40\00:45:36.35 Now in the prophecy of the 70 weeks we're going to see this. 00:45:36.38\00:45:39.26 You are going to be amazed at the next two lectures. 00:45:39.29\00:45:43.19 I can assure you. 00:45:43.22\00:45:44.25 As I prepared, I was amazed myself. 00:45:44.28\00:45:46.98 Because Scripture is so powerful, it's not because 00:45:47.39\00:45:50.94 I have some supernatural wisdom. 00:45:50.97\00:45:53.12 The wisdom is in Scripture. 00:45:53.22\00:45:54.79 I was amazed at how everything fits together. 00:45:54.82\00:45:57.59 Now let's take the third phrase, 00:45:58.37\00:45:59.85 "To make reconciliation for iniquity." 00:45:59.88\00:46:02.54 Let me ask you, who reconciled man to God? 00:46:03.45\00:46:05.81 Jesus did. 00:46:06.39\00:46:07.58 Notice Isaiah chapter 53. 00:46:07.61\00:46:09.49 It says, "But He was wounded for our transgressions..." 00:46:09.79\00:46:13.79 In Romans chapter 5 and verse 10, 00:46:23.74\00:46:26.10 the word, "reconciliation," is used with regards to Christ. 00:46:26.13\00:46:29.61 It says there... 00:46:29.64\00:46:30.67 What is it that reconciled us to God? 00:46:46.18\00:46:48.38 The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. 00:46:49.36\00:46:52.04 This phrase is also Messianic. 00:46:52.07\00:46:54.27 Notice 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and verses 18 and 19. 00:46:54.72\00:46:57.64 Once again, the idea of reconciliation is connected 00:46:57.74\00:47:00.76 with the Messiah. 00:47:00.79\00:47:01.88 It says there, "Now all things are of God, who has..." What? 00:47:01.91\00:47:07.15 Now let's go to our fourth phrase. 00:47:29.18\00:47:32.29 "To bring in everlasting righteousness." 00:47:32.90\00:47:36.65 A better translation would be, "To introduce 00:47:36.68\00:47:39.43 everlasting righteousness." 00:47:39.64\00:47:41.64 Do you know what name is given prophetically to Jesus Christ? 00:47:42.00\00:47:45.16 He is called in Jeremiah 23 verse 6, 00:47:45.46\00:47:49.13 "The Lord our righteousness." 00:47:49.16\00:47:54.13 Are you acquainted with 1 John chapter 2 and verse 1 00:47:55.28\00:47:58.73 where it says that John writes these things 00:47:58.76\00:48:01.34 so that we do not sin. 00:48:01.37\00:48:02.74 But if we sin, we have an advocate with the Father. 00:48:02.77\00:48:05.65 Jesus Christ the what? 00:48:05.68\00:48:07.31 The righteous. 00:48:07.45\00:48:08.48 Did Jesus introduce everlasting righteousness 00:48:08.51\00:48:11.37 by His life on this earth? 00:48:11.40\00:48:12.82 He most certainly did. 00:48:12.85\00:48:14.40 Notice Isaiah chapter 53 and verse 11. 00:48:15.61\00:48:18.63 We're told there about the Messiah. 00:48:19.06\00:48:21.69 "By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many." 00:48:21.72\00:48:28.66 So what is He called? The what Servant? 00:48:29.78\00:48:31.74 The righteous Servant shall justify many, 00:48:32.10\00:48:34.81 "for He shall bear their iniquities." 00:48:34.84\00:48:37.79 This thought is developed repeated times 00:48:37.82\00:48:40.59 in the New Testament. 00:48:40.62\00:48:41.65 For example, in Romans 3 and 4, the whole subject 00:48:41.68\00:48:44.50 is righteousness through Jesus Christ. 00:48:44.53\00:48:47.64 1 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 30, 00:48:48.24\00:48:50.37 Jesus Christ is called our righteousness. 00:48:50.77\00:48:54.79 Did Jesus Christ introduce everlasting righteousness 00:48:55.09\00:48:58.31 by His coming to this world? 00:48:58.34\00:48:59.94 He most certainly did. 00:48:59.97\00:49:01.40 He brought in everlasting righteousness. 00:49:01.64\00:49:05.13 Now let's go to our fifth phrase. 00:49:05.53\00:49:07.56 "To seal up..." 00:49:07.59\00:49:08.94 A better translation is, "To bring to an end..." 00:49:09.37\00:49:11.94 We will take a look at this phrase in our topic, 00:49:11.97\00:49:15.25 not the next one, but the one after. 00:49:15.28\00:49:17.22 "To seal up," or to bring to an end, "vision and prophecy." 00:49:17.25\00:49:22.63 Now you say, "What could this mean, to bring to an end 00:49:23.02\00:49:25.89 vision and prophecy?" 00:49:25.92\00:49:27.28 Does this have anything to do with the Messiah? 00:49:27.31\00:49:29.98 The fact is that we're going to deal with this more extensively 00:49:30.63\00:49:34.27 when we deal with the 70 weeks. 00:49:34.30\00:49:36.24 But allow me just to make a couple of comments. 00:49:36.27\00:49:38.92 The 70 weeks actually end in the year 34 AD. 00:49:39.54\00:49:46.22 And what great event marked the ending of the 70 weeks? 00:49:46.57\00:49:50.82 We're going to study this. 00:49:50.85\00:49:51.96 You have to accept it by faith now. 00:49:52.02\00:49:54.09 What is the great event that brought the 70 weeks to an end? 00:49:55.22\00:49:58.86 It was the stoning of Stephen. 00:49:59.90\00:50:01.57 You see, the 70 weeks, we're going to see, 00:50:01.60\00:50:03.01 they present the baptism of Jesus, His death 00:50:03.04\00:50:05.29 in the middle of the week, and then at the end 00:50:05.32\00:50:08.28 you have the stoning of Stephen. 00:50:08.31\00:50:09.62 And I'm going to prove to you from the Bible 00:50:09.65\00:50:12.18 that the stoning of Stephen is the ending date of the 70 weeks. 00:50:12.21\00:50:15.66 And I'm going to prove it with abundance biblical evidence. 00:50:15.69\00:50:18.33 Even Adventists who, you know, have studied this 00:50:18.65\00:50:21.35 and wondered about why we end with the stoning of Stephen, 00:50:21.38\00:50:24.72 you're going to see it very clearly. 00:50:24.75\00:50:26.07 Do you know that the last prophet who received a vision 00:50:26.39\00:50:32.87 for literal Israel was whom? 00:50:33.75\00:50:36.52 Stephen. 00:50:37.16\00:50:38.50 I'm going to prove to you that Stephen was the last prophet 00:50:39.83\00:50:44.15 that God sent to the Jewish Sanhedrin. 00:50:44.18\00:50:46.92 Did Stephen see a vision of Christ in the 00:50:47.51\00:50:51.45 heavenly Sanctuary? 00:50:51.48\00:50:52.77 He says, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man 00:50:53.22\00:50:57.51 at the right hand of God." 00:50:57.54\00:50:58.87 He's seeing this how? 00:50:59.01\00:51:00.63 In vision. 00:51:00.93\00:51:02.08 Is this the last vision that God is going to give 00:51:02.81\00:51:06.45 to the literal Hebrew theocracy? 00:51:06.48\00:51:08.39 Yes it is. 00:51:08.54\00:51:09.57 Stephen is the last prophet who gets the last vision 00:51:09.60\00:51:13.54 for the Jewish nation. 00:51:13.90\00:51:15.00 When they decide to stone him, vision and prophecy 00:51:15.03\00:51:19.62 come to an end. 00:51:19.76\00:51:21.77 Are you understanding me? 00:51:21.80\00:51:23.05 Now the important thing is you understand the concept 00:51:23.15\00:51:25.85 because we're going to go through this with a 00:51:26.11\00:51:27.85 fine tooth comb, scripturally, in our next couple of lectures. 00:51:27.88\00:51:32.43 Now let's go to our final phrase. 00:51:33.00\00:51:34.93 "To anoint the Most Holy." 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.89 Literally, it says, "To anoint the Holy of Holies." 00:51:37.92\00:51:42.23 Now this expression can be understood in 00:51:42.71\00:51:44.89 two different ways. 00:51:44.92\00:51:46.11 First of all, the expression, "Holy of Holies," 00:51:46.50\00:51:50.84 can be understood of a person. 00:51:50.87\00:51:52.46 It can be understood of Jesus Christ. 00:51:52.49\00:51:54.73 He is the Holy of all of the holy ones. 00:51:55.10\00:51:58.41 Or it can be understood also as the Most Holy Place 00:51:58.44\00:52:02.87 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:52:03.42\00:52:05.05 Now the question is, which of these two translations 00:52:05.73\00:52:09.72 is the correct one? 00:52:09.75\00:52:11.03 The fact is, I believe that both of these 00:52:11.32\00:52:13.74 translations are correct. 00:52:13.77\00:52:15.16 Both of these concepts are correct. 00:52:15.19\00:52:16.84 You say, "How do you know that?" 00:52:17.06\00:52:18.70 Because when the Hebrew Sanctuary was inaugurated, 00:52:19.17\00:52:22.94 the entire Sanctuary was anointed. 00:52:24.28\00:52:27.03 Including the Most Holy Place. 00:52:27.70\00:52:29.65 And also Aaron the High Priest was anointed as well. 00:52:29.96\00:52:35.38 In other words, the entire Sanctuary including the 00:52:35.95\00:52:38.51 Most Holy Place was anointed. 00:52:38.54\00:52:40.44 And also the High Priest, Aaron, was anointed as well. 00:52:40.94\00:52:45.52 I want you to read Leviticus chapter 8 verses 1 through 12 00:52:45.55\00:52:48.81 where you have this original ceremony where the Sanctuary 00:52:48.84\00:52:52.49 and the High Priest are anointed as they begin their service 00:52:52.52\00:52:56.57 in the Sanctuary. 00:52:56.60\00:52:58.07 Let me ask you, when Jesus went to heaven, 00:52:59.15\00:53:01.17 was He anointed High Priest over His people? 00:53:01.20\00:53:04.16 He most certainly was. 00:53:04.91\00:53:06.07 Notice Acts chapter 2 and verses 32 to 36. 00:53:06.10\00:53:11.95 We're not going to read it because we don't have the time. 00:53:11.98\00:53:14.15 But there very clearly, Peter, on the day of Pentecost, 00:53:14.18\00:53:17.60 explains that Jesus Christ was anointed Priest and King 00:53:17.82\00:53:22.75 over His people. 00:53:22.78\00:53:24.04 I want to read a statement from Acts Of The Apostles, 00:53:24.35\00:53:26.84 page 38, this is a book written by Ellen White, 00:53:27.23\00:53:30.76 where she speaks about when Jesus was inaugurated 00:53:31.07\00:53:34.30 as our High Priest in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:53:34.33\00:53:37.83 She says this. 00:53:37.86\00:53:39.04 "The Pentecostal outpouring was heaven's communication that 00:53:39.07\00:53:43.89 the Redeemer's inauguration was accomplished." 00:53:43.92\00:53:47.19 In other words, the tongues of fire and the mighty rushing wind 00:53:47.43\00:53:50.19 was an earthly announcement that Jesus had been inaugurated 00:53:50.22\00:53:53.78 as the High Priest. 00:53:53.81\00:53:55.00 She continues saying, "According to His promise, 00:53:55.03\00:53:57.91 He had sent the Holy Spirit from heaven to His followers 00:53:58.11\00:54:01.53 as a token that He had, as Priest and King, 00:54:01.73\00:54:07.76 received all authority in heaven and on earth," 00:54:07.98\00:54:11.77 and now notice, "and was the anointed One over His people." 00:54:11.80\00:54:18.65 So was Jesus anointed to be the High Priest? 00:54:20.25\00:54:22.80 Absolutely. 00:54:23.34\00:54:24.37 You want to read an interesting little psalm? 00:54:24.91\00:54:26.86 Psalm 133. 00:54:27.37\00:54:29.40 It speaks about the anointing of Aaron. 00:54:29.95\00:54:31.80 I wish we had time to talk about this psalm. 00:54:32.98\00:54:35.17 It's a real short one. 00:54:35.20\00:54:36.48 It begins by saying how wonderful it is for 00:54:36.68\00:54:39.37 brothers and sisters to live together in harmony 00:54:39.40\00:54:42.66 or in unity. 00:54:42.69\00:54:43.72 Are we in one accord? 00:54:43.75\00:54:45.15 And then it speaks about Aaron and the oil being 00:54:45.35\00:54:47.84 poured over the head of Aaron. 00:54:47.87\00:54:49.29 And it's dripping down his beard and it's dripping 00:54:49.77\00:54:52.06 down his garments. 00:54:52.09\00:54:53.26 And the oil is so abundant that it's dripping 00:54:53.29\00:54:55.69 down on Mount Zion. 00:54:55.72\00:54:57.02 You know, that's describing the day of Pentecost. 00:54:57.36\00:54:59.51 When Jesus Christ was anointed High Priest over His people, 00:54:59.89\00:55:03.73 He received the gift of the Holy Spirit from His Father 00:55:03.76\00:55:06.31 before He gave it. 00:55:06.34\00:55:07.37 His Father gave Him the gift of the Spirit. 00:55:07.40\00:55:09.36 And then Jesus poured it out upon His followers on earth. 00:55:09.39\00:55:13.92 And the Holy Spirit was so abundant that Jesus was 00:55:14.44\00:55:17.72 anointed with that it actually dripped down 00:55:17.75\00:55:20.92 into the upper room on Mount Zion 00:55:21.54\00:55:24.11 where the disciples were gathered together. 00:55:24.14\00:55:27.22 Now let me ask you, as soon as Daniel chapter 9 00:55:27.76\00:55:32.35 comes to an end, does Daniel now understand the mareh? 00:55:32.38\00:55:36.61 Let's finish by reading Daniel chapter 10 and verse 1. 00:55:37.82\00:55:44.94 Daniel chapter 10 and verse 1. 00:55:45.51\00:55:48.39 It says, "In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia 00:55:48.93\00:55:52.58 a message was revealed to Daniel, 00:55:53.04\00:55:55.31 whose name was called Belteshazzar. 00:55:55.34\00:55:57.89 The message was true, but the appointed time was long..." 00:55:57.92\00:56:02.43 What is that referring to, "the appointed time was long?" 00:56:03.07\00:56:06.38 Ah, the prophecy of the 2300 days. 00:56:07.01\00:56:09.02 Absolutely. 00:56:09.05\00:56:10.10 "And he..." What? 00:56:10.13\00:56:11.56 "...understood the message..." 00:56:12.64\00:56:15.46 And in case you didn't understand that part, 00:56:15.93\00:56:17.66 it says, "...and had understanding of the..." 00:56:17.69\00:56:20.70 Mareh. "...of the vision." 00:56:21.21\00:56:23.33 Does Daniel now understand? 00:56:23.36\00:56:25.08 What led him to understand? 00:56:26.46\00:56:27.97 How did he understand the mareh now? 00:56:29.82\00:56:31.85 Because Gabriel had explained the prophecy of what? 00:56:33.50\00:56:36.44 Of the 70 weeks. 00:56:37.19\00:56:38.96 Thus, the 70 weeks are the first portion of what? 00:56:40.16\00:56:44.30 Of the 2300 day prophecy. 00:56:44.89\00:56:47.55 If we can know when the 70 weeks begin, 00:56:47.58\00:56:50.85 we can know when the cleansing of the Sanctuary 00:56:51.36\00:56:54.05 begins 2300 years later. 00:56:54.08\00:56:57.99 And I can assure you that the date is the year 1844. 00:56:58.69\00:57:04.90 More specifically, by examining the Hebrew feasts we can 00:57:05.10\00:57:08.97 specify the day and the month as well. 00:57:09.00\00:57:12.66 It is October 22, 1844 when the 2300 days, or years, 00:57:12.97\00:57:19.66 come to an end and the process of cleansing 00:57:19.69\00:57:22.98 the Sanctuary begins. 00:57:23.01\00:57:24.98 We will have a whole lecture on what it means 00:57:25.01\00:57:27.23 to cleanse the Hebrew Sanctuary. 00:57:27.33\00:57:29.80
