Let's pray. 00:00:33.99\00:00:35.30 Our loving Father in heaven, once again we thank You 00:00:37.33\00:00:40.69 that we can gather in Your presence to open Your holy Word 00:00:40.72\00:00:44.89 and to understand the great things that have taken place, 00:00:45.54\00:00:49.73 are taking place, and soon will occur in this world. 00:00:50.01\00:00:55.16 As we study Daniel chapter 8 today, we need the 00:00:55.86\00:00:59.78 special guidance of Your Holy Spirit. 00:00:59.81\00:01:02.06 We ask, Father, that You will give us understanding 00:01:02.65\00:01:06.02 that we might be able to comprehend this 00:01:06.37\00:01:08.44 magnificent chapter of Scripture. 00:01:08.89\00:01:11.50 I ask, Lord, that You will help us to see its importance 00:01:12.00\00:01:14.58 for our own personal walk with Jesus. 00:01:14.61\00:01:17.04 And we thank You for hearing our prayer, 00:01:17.50\00:01:19.00 for we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:19.03\00:01:22.17 I'd like to begin by reviewing what we've studied 00:01:23.40\00:01:27.25 in our last two lectures. 00:01:27.28\00:01:30.28 Basically, I want to go through the sequence of powers 00:01:30.94\00:01:34.56 that are mentioned in Daniel chapter 2 and Daniel chapter 7. 00:01:34.59\00:01:38.29 The first power... 00:01:39.17\00:01:40.32 And we'll go to Daniel 7 as our example. 00:01:40.73\00:01:44.04 The first power is a lion. 00:01:44.07\00:01:46.27 It represents what kingdom? 00:01:46.30\00:01:47.86 Babylon. 00:01:48.43\00:01:49.46 The next kingdom is what? 00:01:49.87\00:01:51.57 Medo-Persia. 00:01:52.09\00:01:53.47 The third kingdom, the leopard kingdom, is what? 00:01:53.50\00:01:56.40 Greece. 00:01:56.72\00:01:57.83 Then we have a terrible dragon beast that has iron teeth. 00:01:57.86\00:02:02.73 And what nation does that represent? 00:02:02.76\00:02:04.79 It represents the Roman Empire. 00:02:05.23\00:02:07.44 Then from the head of that dragon beast come forth what? 00:02:07.47\00:02:11.24 Ten horns. 00:02:11.60\00:02:12.81 And those represent the divisions of the Roman Empire 00:02:12.84\00:02:17.63 into which the Roman Empire was divided when it broke up 00:02:17.66\00:02:20.75 in the year 476. 00:02:21.06\00:02:23.20 And then among the ten rises what? 00:02:23.54\00:02:25.96 A little horn, a nasty little horn; 00:02:26.62\00:02:28.83 and does all kinds of wicked things. 00:02:29.06\00:02:31.45 And it rules for how long? 00:02:31.48\00:02:33.33 It rules for 1260 years. 00:02:34.07\00:02:37.39 And that period begins when? 00:02:37.42\00:02:39.55 In the year 538 when the Ostrogoths were defeated. 00:02:40.27\00:02:44.77 The third of the three horns was ripped out by the roots. 00:02:44.80\00:02:48.70 And it continued until what date? 00:02:49.20\00:02:52.39 The little horn? 1798. 00:02:52.88\00:02:55.81 And then you notice that we have the next scene is what? 00:02:56.14\00:03:00.81 The judgment. 00:03:01.53\00:03:02.61 So after what date does the judgment take place? 00:03:03.21\00:03:06.81 It has to be after 1798. 00:03:07.21\00:03:10.43 But it also happens before probation closes. 00:03:11.49\00:03:15.88 Before Jesus comes. 00:03:16.34\00:03:18.47 Because we noticed in Revelation chapter 14, it says, 00:03:18.96\00:03:22.47 "Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His 00:03:22.50\00:03:25.09 judgment has come," while the gospel is still being preached. 00:03:25.12\00:03:28.67 Probation can't have closed if the gospel is 00:03:28.70\00:03:30.97 still being preached. 00:03:31.00\00:03:32.20 And only after the third angel's message 00:03:32.40\00:03:35.16 do you have Jesus sitting on a cloud with a sickle 00:03:35.43\00:03:39.90 coming to harvest the earth. 00:03:39.93\00:03:42.21 And so we noticed in our study that the judgment takes place 00:03:42.60\00:03:46.77 sometime between 1798 and the close of probation. 00:03:47.06\00:03:53.17 Although we are not told exactly what the precise date is. 00:03:53.46\00:03:58.25 All we have is the parameters. 00:03:58.28\00:04:00.91 But the prophecy that we're going to study 00:04:01.37\00:04:03.30 in this evening's lecture, as well as our next one, 00:04:03.33\00:04:07.33 regarding Daniel chapter 8, we're going to notice 00:04:07.60\00:04:11.71 that Scripture pinpoints the exact date 00:04:11.74\00:04:16.09 when that judgment was going to begin. 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.49 So let's turn in our Bibles to Daniel chapter 8. 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.87 And the first thing that we're going to notice in this chapter 00:04:24.17\00:04:26.99 is that it does not begin with Babylon like chapter 7 00:04:27.02\00:04:31.67 and like chapter 2. 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.07 There is no symbol for Babylon. 00:04:33.42\00:04:36.14 In fact, in Daniel chapter 8 the vision begins with Medo-Persia. 00:04:36.57\00:04:43.82 Now you might be wondering, "Pastor Bohr, Why does the 00:04:44.42\00:04:47.11 vision of Daniel 8 begin with Medo-Persia 00:04:47.14\00:04:50.30 if Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 began with Babylon?" 00:04:50.60\00:04:55.60 Now the traditional interpretation 00:04:55.88\00:04:57.76 that has been given in the Adventist church is that 00:04:57.79\00:05:00.46 Babylon is about to pass from history. 00:05:00.49\00:05:03.64 But the fact is that this vision is taking place 00:05:04.04\00:05:06.62 in the year 550 BC. 00:05:06.65\00:05:08.63 And Babylon was not going to fall for another 11 years. 00:05:08.83\00:05:12.22 There is another more important reason why Babylon 00:05:12.44\00:05:16.07 is not in this vision of Daniel chapter 8. 00:05:16.10\00:05:19.66 And let me explain the reason succinctly. 00:05:19.69\00:05:22.49 You see, the 2300 days that are mentioned in this prophecy 00:05:22.86\00:05:28.45 begin during the period of the Persian Empire. 00:05:28.74\00:05:33.26 And so the vision begins... 00:05:34.11\00:05:36.90 Now listen carefully. 00:05:37.31\00:05:38.90 The vision begins where the 2300 days begin. 00:05:38.93\00:05:44.64 You see, the 2300 days do not begin in the kingdom of Babylon. 00:05:44.74\00:05:48.38 They begin during the period of the kingdom of Persia. 00:05:48.67\00:05:51.79 And therefore, the 2300 day prophecy begins with Persia. 00:05:51.82\00:05:56.82 And that's the reason why this vision begins with Persia 00:05:56.85\00:06:01.89 and not with Babylon. 00:06:01.92\00:06:04.00 Are you understanding the reason? 00:06:04.03\00:06:05.26 It's a very important reason. 00:06:05.29\00:06:06.72 And we will have reason to come back to this a little bit later. 00:06:06.75\00:06:10.39 Now let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 1 00:06:10.61\00:06:13.23 and move through this magnificent prophecy. 00:06:13.26\00:06:17.45 It says there in verse 1... 00:06:17.61\00:06:19.36 I mentioned that this is the year 550 BC. 00:06:25.32\00:06:28.69 Which is the one that appeared to him the first time? 00:06:43.36\00:06:46.07 The one that is found in the previous chapter. 00:06:46.27\00:06:49.05 In Daniel chapter what? 00:06:49.08\00:06:50.97 Chapter 7. 00:06:51.00\00:06:52.04 Now listen carefully. 00:06:52.07\00:06:53.36 The word for "vision" here is a very important word. 00:06:53.63\00:06:57.65 You see, in Daniel 8 there are two different 00:06:57.85\00:06:59.95 words for "vision." 00:06:59.98\00:07:01.26 And unless we understand that, we're not going to reach correct 00:07:01.29\00:07:04.67 conclusions as we study this chapter. 00:07:04.70\00:07:06.88 The word that is used here for "vision," where it says, 00:07:07.28\00:07:10.40 "The third year of the reign of King Belshazzar 00:07:10.43\00:07:12.64 a vision appears to me," is the Hebrews word, "chazon." 00:07:12.67\00:07:18.28 Remember that because it's very, very important. 00:07:18.69\00:07:21.22 Now let's go to verse 2. 00:07:21.53\00:07:23.12 "I saw in the vision..." 00:07:23.87\00:07:26.07 Once again, the word "chazon." 00:07:26.10\00:07:28.78 Now the emphasis on eye sight here. 00:07:33.64\00:07:36.45 Shusan is one of the capitals of the Medo-Persian Empire. 00:07:39.08\00:07:41.71 Once again, the third time that the word "chazon" is used 00:07:49.49\00:07:54.01 to describe the vision. 00:07:54.04\00:07:55.47 So it says in verse 2... 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.70 Now let's go to verse 3. 00:08:12.84\00:08:14.41 Notice one again the emphasis on vision, seeing. 00:08:17.26\00:08:21.26 There's tremendous emphasis on this. 00:08:21.29\00:08:23.33 Just one beast. 00:08:31.68\00:08:33.13 But now notice what it continues saying. 00:08:33.16\00:08:35.43 So this is one nation that is composed of two kingdoms. 00:08:38.70\00:08:43.21 Because horns represent kingdoms. 00:08:43.24\00:08:45.23 So it's one nation composed of two kingdoms. 00:08:45.26\00:08:48.91 In other words, dual kingdoms in one nation. 00:08:48.94\00:08:51.49 So it continues saying... 00:08:52.17\00:08:53.36 So you have two horns. 00:09:07.72\00:09:09.13 One is higher than the other. 00:09:09.60\00:09:11.18 And the higher one comes out how? 00:09:11.21\00:09:13.33 Last. 00:09:13.60\00:09:14.63 Now, you should have received two sheets tonight. 00:09:14.66\00:09:17.09 One of the sheets has the dynasty of the 00:09:17.72\00:09:20.17 Medes and Persians. 00:09:20.20\00:09:21.50 Now if you look at that chart... 00:09:21.87\00:09:23.53 We're not going to look at it carefully right now 00:09:23.56\00:09:25.37 because we don't have the time. 00:09:25.40\00:09:26.80 From the year 539 when the Medes and Persians began to rule 00:09:28.28\00:09:32.37 until the year 522, all of the kings were Medes 00:09:33.25\00:09:39.31 except for Cyrus, who was half Mede and half Persian. 00:09:39.80\00:09:43.27 But from the year 522 until the year 331, 00:09:44.39\00:09:48.82 almost 200 years, every single king was Persian. 00:09:49.69\00:09:56.67 So what was the nation that became more powerful last? 00:09:57.10\00:10:01.09 It was the Persians. 00:10:01.32\00:10:02.65 And interestingly enough, after Daniel chapter 8 00:10:02.89\00:10:06.10 every time that this kingdom appears in prophecy 00:10:06.43\00:10:10.72 it's no longer called Medo-Persia. 00:10:10.75\00:10:13.97 It is called Persia. 00:10:14.00\00:10:16.17 Because the Medes have basically disappeared, 00:10:16.76\00:10:20.07 and now Persia is ruling. 00:10:20.10\00:10:22.12 Are you understanding my point? 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.47 And you can see it on that chart. 00:10:23.50\00:10:25.43 Prophecy is specific and exact on this point. 00:10:26.06\00:10:30.08 Now, this battle that we're going to see here 00:10:30.76\00:10:34.20 at the beginning of Daniel chapter 8 is taking place 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.87 on a horizontal level on earth. 00:10:36.90\00:10:39.32 There is no indication that these nations are in 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.43 controversy or in conflict with God. 00:10:42.46\00:10:44.43 This is a geographical fight among nations 00:10:44.46\00:10:47.78 on a horizontal level. 00:10:47.81\00:10:49.25 There is no fight against God in the early part of the chapter. 00:10:49.28\00:10:53.68 Notice Daniel chapter 8 and verse 4. 00:10:54.36\00:10:57.06 Oh by the way, do you remember that the bear 00:10:57.36\00:11:00.03 was raise up on one side in Daniel chapter 7? 00:11:00.06\00:11:03.93 And here we have one horn that's what? 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.09 That's higher than the other. 00:11:06.36\00:11:07.74 See, it's parallel. 00:11:07.77\00:11:09.46 Now Daniel chapter 8 and verse 4. 00:11:09.49\00:11:11.92 "I saw the ram," which represents the 00:11:11.95\00:11:14.41 Medes and Persians... 00:11:14.44\00:11:15.79 How many ribs did the bear have in its mouth in Daniel 7? 00:11:20.74\00:11:24.26 Three. 00:11:24.78\00:11:25.81 And here, the ram conquers in three directions. 00:11:25.84\00:11:29.18 Westward would be Babylon, 539. 00:11:29.88\00:11:32.43 Northward would be Lydia, 546. 00:11:32.46\00:11:35.49 And southward would be Egypt, in the year 525. 00:11:35.52\00:11:39.90 And it continues saying... 00:11:39.93\00:11:41.19 Now remember that, the ram became what? 00:11:51.97\00:11:54.34 The ram became great. 00:11:54.64\00:11:56.48 That's important. 00:11:56.92\00:11:57.95 Now we have another power that rises. 00:11:58.33\00:12:00.86 Go with me to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 5. 00:12:00.89\00:12:04.32 It's interesting, a male goat came from the west. 00:12:13.61\00:12:15.78 Do you know that Greece is west of Persia? 00:12:15.81\00:12:19.10 And do you know that Daniel was in Persia 00:12:19.80\00:12:22.34 when he received this vision? 00:12:22.37\00:12:23.92 And so he sees this beast coming from the west. 00:12:24.13\00:12:27.40 What nation does this beast represent, this he goat? 00:12:27.91\00:12:30.78 Greece. 00:12:30.81\00:12:31.96 Interesting, even the points of the compass 00:12:31.99\00:12:34.27 are precise and exact. 00:12:34.30\00:12:36.26 And so it says, "And as I was considering, 00:12:36.29\00:12:38.31 suddenly a male goat..." 00:12:38.34\00:12:40.04 What beast represented Greece in Daniel chapter 7? 00:12:50.07\00:12:53.59 A leopard. Is a leopard swift? 00:12:54.12\00:12:56.14 Yes, but the leopard had what? 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.14 Four wings of a bird, super swift. 00:12:58.17\00:13:01.08 Here, the he goat, which represents the same power, 00:13:01.34\00:13:03.93 is so swift that it's flying. 00:13:03.96\00:13:07.24 Have you ever seen a flying goat? 00:13:07.27\00:13:09.16 Oh my. 00:13:09.19\00:13:10.39 He is really conquering in a hurry. 00:13:10.42\00:13:12.96 By the way, as I mentioned yesterday, the prophecy 00:13:13.62\00:13:17.67 tells us that Alexander the Great was represented 00:13:17.70\00:13:21.62 by a notable horn. 00:13:21.65\00:13:22.68 In fact, let's read it. 00:13:22.71\00:13:23.74 And then I'll tell you something about Alexander the Great. 00:13:23.77\00:13:26.02 It says that this he goat came without touching the ground. 00:13:26.05\00:13:29.87 "And the goat had a..." What? 00:13:30.36\00:13:32.45 "...a notable horn between his eyes." 00:13:32.48\00:13:35.77 Which, later on in chapter 8, says that it 00:13:35.97\00:13:38.79 represents the first king of this nation; 00:13:38.82\00:13:41.65 which is Alexander the Great. 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.55 Alexander the Great ruled from Athens all the way 00:13:44.21\00:13:47.79 to the Indus Valley. 00:13:47.82\00:13:50.34 In three years he conquered the known world. 00:13:50.90\00:13:53.59 And he died when he was only 33 years old 00:13:54.18\00:13:58.70 of a drunken binge because he didn't have anything more to do. 00:13:58.73\00:14:01.71 He didn't have anything more to conquer. 00:14:01.74\00:14:03.44 Amazing. 00:14:03.47\00:14:04.53 He was swift. 00:14:04.56\00:14:06.19 Notice Daniel chapter 8 and verses 6 and 7. 00:14:06.22\00:14:09.53 Is this battle still taking place horizontally on earth? 00:14:36.38\00:14:40.32 Is this an earthly battle? 00:14:40.35\00:14:41.80 Any indication that the he goat has any bone 00:14:41.83\00:14:46.55 to pick with the Lord? 00:14:46.58\00:14:47.61 Absolutely not, this is a geographical fight 00:14:47.64\00:14:50.75 among nations on a horizontal level. 00:14:50.78\00:14:53.49 Now let's notice Daniel chapter 8 and verse 8. 00:14:53.94\00:14:56.66 Ah, the ram grew what? 00:15:03.60\00:15:07.24 Great. 00:15:07.59\00:15:08.68 Now we see that the he goat grows what? 00:15:08.71\00:15:11.54 Very great. 00:15:11.90\00:15:13.06 Don't forget that because we're going to come back to it. 00:15:13.09\00:15:14.92 "Therefore, the male goat," which represents Greece, 00:15:14.95\00:15:18.13 grew very great; but when he became strong..." 00:15:18.16\00:15:22.44 In other words, at the climax of his strength, what happened? 00:15:23.45\00:15:27.83 "...the large horn was broken." 00:15:27.86\00:15:32.26 Alexander the Great died when Greece was at the apex 00:15:33.00\00:15:36.79 of its power. 00:15:36.82\00:15:38.04 In a drunken binge, like I mentioned. 00:15:38.50\00:15:40.68 And notice what happened. 00:15:40.71\00:15:42.01 It continues saying... 00:15:42.04\00:15:43.14 How many heads did the leopard have? 00:15:53.04\00:15:54.87 The leopard had four heads. 00:15:55.82\00:15:57.91 Now how many horns come when this great horn is broken? 00:15:57.94\00:16:03.86 Four. 00:16:03.89\00:16:04.92 So Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 are parallel prophecies. 00:16:05.25\00:16:11.06 Now you need to understand what happened 00:16:11.98\00:16:14.22 after Alexander the Great died. 00:16:14.25\00:16:16.04 After he died, there was a struggle among his generals 00:16:16.24\00:16:19.26 to gain power in the kingdom. 00:16:19.46\00:16:21.76 And for a while sometimes there were three kingdoms, 00:16:22.24\00:16:25.10 sometimes there were four kingdoms, 00:16:25.13\00:16:27.21 sometimes there were even two kingdoms. 00:16:27.24\00:16:29.38 But finally, four kingdoms emerged from what had been 00:16:29.58\00:16:35.26 Alexander's empire. 00:16:35.56\00:16:37.34 I want to read you a statement that is found in the book 00:16:37.55\00:16:40.79 by W. W. Tarn, Hellenistic Civilization, page 6 00:16:40.82\00:16:45.33 where he explains these four kingdoms. 00:16:45.36\00:16:47.93 He says this... 00:16:48.24\00:16:49.48 "By 275, three dynasties descended from 00:16:49.78\00:16:54.17 three of his generals, and they were well established." 00:16:54.20\00:16:58.56 The Seleucids..." 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.47 Which by the way ruled from 312 to the year 63 BC. 00:17:00.91\00:17:04.84 He says, "The Seleucids ruled much of what had been 00:17:05.53\00:17:08.54 the Persian Empire in Asia. 00:17:08.57\00:17:10.56 The Ptolemies," who ruled from 323 to 30 BC, "ruled Egypt. 00:17:10.93\00:17:16.83 And the Antigonids," who ruled from 283 to 168, 00:17:17.21\00:17:21.75 "ruled Macedonia." 00:17:21.78\00:17:23.53 And then he says this. 00:17:24.04\00:17:25.67 "A Fourth European dynasty not connected with Alexander, 00:17:25.70\00:17:31.03 the Attalids of Pergamum," 263 to 133, "subsequently 00:17:31.47\00:17:39.20 grew up in Asia Minor at Seleucid's expense 00:17:39.23\00:17:44.90 and became great by the favor of Rome." 00:17:44.93\00:17:48.98 So the four kingdoms that arose, four stable kingdoms 00:17:49.53\00:17:55.37 that lasted a significant period of time, 00:17:55.40\00:17:57.60 were the Seleucids, the Ptolemies, the Antigonids, 00:17:57.63\00:18:01.06 and the Attalids in Pergamum. 00:18:01.09\00:18:04.80 Now I want to just mention that many scholars, 00:18:06.18\00:18:09.80 probably most Roman Catholic scholars and Protestant scholars 00:18:09.83\00:18:12.84 believe that the little horn that is going to come from 00:18:12.87\00:18:16.01 these four horns at the four winds represents a nasty 00:18:16.04\00:18:21.52 individual called Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:18:21.55\00:18:24.19 He was a Syrian ruler that ruled from the 00:18:24.59\00:18:27.64 year 171 to the year 163 BC. 00:18:27.67\00:18:32.13 I want to tell you that I do not share the idea that 00:18:32.74\00:18:36.12 this little horn of Daniel 8 that comes forth from 00:18:36.15\00:18:39.08 the four horns represents Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:18:39.11\00:18:42.99 Because there are too many parallels between the 00:18:43.19\00:18:45.48 little horn of Daniel chapter 7 and the little horn of Daniel 8 00:18:45.51\00:18:49.11 that indicate that this represents the same power. 00:18:49.14\00:18:51.88 Let me just mention some of those parallels. 00:18:51.91\00:18:54.44 First of all, both are referred to as a horn. 00:18:54.72\00:18:58.41 And even though Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 are in 00:18:58.92\00:19:01.47 two different languages, Daniel 7 is in Aramaic 00:19:01.50\00:19:04.93 and Daniel chapter 8 is in Hebrew, the same Hebrew 00:19:04.96\00:19:08.58 word, "qeren," is used to describe the horn. 00:19:08.61\00:19:11.60 The identical word for the horn of Daniel 7 and the 00:19:11.63\00:19:13.98 horn of Daniel 8. 00:19:14.01\00:19:15.04 Secondly, both are described as little. 00:19:15.40\00:19:18.07 In the third place, both of them become great 00:19:18.71\00:19:22.40 after they had a small beginning. 00:19:22.43\00:19:24.24 In the fourth place, both are described as persecuting powers. 00:19:24.54\00:19:29.31 In the fifth place, the persecution is against 00:19:29.51\00:19:32.53 the same target group. 00:19:32.56\00:19:34.40 That is, against the people of the saints of the Most High. 00:19:34.43\00:19:38.14 In the sixth place, both of them are self-exalting 00:19:38.54\00:19:42.54 and blasphemous powers. 00:19:42.57\00:19:44.57 In the seventh place, both are distinguished 00:19:44.77\00:19:47.25 by crafty intelligence. 00:19:47.28\00:19:49.48 One has the eyes of a man, in Daniel chapter 7. 00:19:49.51\00:19:52.82 And in Daniel chapter 8, the little horn understands riddles 00:19:52.85\00:19:56.37 and cunning and deceit. 00:19:56.40\00:19:58.57 Number eight, both of these represent the final power 00:19:59.35\00:20:03.76 that will rule upon this earth. 00:20:03.79\00:20:05.89 Number nine, both of these horns have to do with prophetic time. 00:20:05.92\00:20:10.94 Number ten, both of these horns extend until 00:20:11.43\00:20:15.08 the time of the end. 00:20:15.11\00:20:16.45 And number eleven, both of the horns are supernaturally 00:20:16.48\00:20:20.24 destroyed when Jesus comes. 00:20:20.27\00:20:22.13 In other words, the little horn of Daniel 8 represents 00:20:22.33\00:20:25.18 the same power as the little horn of Daniel chapter 7. 00:20:25.21\00:20:28.66 I want to read a statement by an individual who was 00:20:28.69\00:20:31.16 my teacher at the seminary in Michigan, Andrews University. 00:20:31.19\00:20:34.96 William Shea, a tremendous Old Testament scholar. 00:20:34.99\00:20:37.70 In the book, Symposium on Daniel, page 187, 00:20:38.10\00:20:41.44 this is what he says. 00:20:41.47\00:20:42.82 "If the prophet," that is, if Daniel, "had desired to 00:20:43.02\00:20:46.22 represent different powers in this final position 00:20:46.25\00:20:49.51 he could easily have used different symbols to do so. 00:20:50.58\00:20:54.01 But instead, he used the same symbol of a little horn 00:20:54.48\00:20:58.82 at the end of the vision in chapter 8 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.60 as he did at the end of the vision in chapter 7. 00:21:01.63\00:21:05.27 This commonality of representation suggests 00:21:05.64\00:21:09.89 that the same symbol has been used to refer to the same power 00:21:09.92\00:21:15.20 in both cases." 00:21:15.23\00:21:17.55 So in other words, the little horn of Daniel 7 00:21:17.75\00:21:20.29 and the little horn of Daniel 8 represents basically 00:21:20.32\00:21:23.23 the same power. 00:21:23.26\00:21:24.57 Now, there's a problem. 00:21:24.91\00:21:26.85 In Daniel chapter 7, the little horn rises from the 00:21:27.75\00:21:31.20 head of the fourth beast. 00:21:31.23\00:21:32.96 In Daniel chapter 8, the little horn rises 00:21:33.63\00:21:37.00 from one of the four horns that were a part of 00:21:37.03\00:21:41.71 Alexander the Great's broken up empire. 00:21:41.74\00:21:44.47 So you say it gives the impression that in 00:21:44.75\00:21:47.61 Daniel chapter 7 this little horn comes from Rome, 00:21:47.64\00:21:51.23 but in Daniel chapter 8 this little horn comes from 00:21:51.26\00:21:54.21 one of the four divisions of the empire of Greece; 00:21:54.24\00:21:57.67 the empire of Alexander the Great. 00:21:57.70\00:21:59.55 Well this problem is not as difficult as some 00:21:59.82\00:22:03.81 people would believe. 00:22:03.84\00:22:05.36 Now let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 9. 00:22:05.39\00:22:08.25 It says here, "And out of one of them..." 00:22:08.52\00:22:11.60 That is, out of one of the four horns at the four winds. 00:22:11.63\00:22:15.21 Is there a progression here? 00:22:26.51\00:22:28.14 The ram was what? 00:22:28.94\00:22:30.55 Great. 00:22:30.85\00:22:31.88 The he goat was what? 00:22:31.91\00:22:33.42 Very great. 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.14 And the little horn is exceeding great. 00:22:35.17\00:22:39.08 That's why I don't believe that this little horn 00:22:40.61\00:22:42.18 can be Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:22:42.21\00:22:43.56 Antiochus Epiphanes was a non-entity in history. 00:22:43.59\00:22:47.52 He wasn't greater than the Medes and Persians and the Greeks. 00:22:48.04\00:22:51.69 There are other reasons why this little horn 00:22:52.28\00:22:54.15 is not Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:22:54.18\00:22:56.54 And so notice what it continues saying. 00:22:56.57\00:22:58.35 "And out of one of them," out of one of the four horns 00:22:58.38\00:23:01.44 to the four winds, "came a little horn which grew 00:23:01.47\00:23:03.95 exceedingly great toward the east," that is, towards Greece, 00:23:03.98\00:23:10.15 Asia Minor, and Syria, "and toward the south," 00:23:10.18\00:23:14.90 that's Egypt, "and toward the Glorious Land," 00:23:14.93\00:23:18.96 that is Israel. 00:23:18.99\00:23:21.10 Now listen carefully. 00:23:21.13\00:23:22.16 There's one kingdom that conquered in those 00:23:22.54\00:23:25.41 three directions to rise to power. 00:23:25.44\00:23:27.66 And that nation was what? 00:23:28.01\00:23:31.26 Rome. 00:23:31.59\00:23:32.82 If you look at history, you'll find that Rome conquered 00:23:33.18\00:23:37.12 the south, Egypt; it conquered towards the east, Greece, 00:23:37.15\00:23:41.82 Asia Minor, and Syria where the previous power had ruled; 00:23:41.85\00:23:45.70 and the Glorious Land, which is what? 00:23:45.73\00:23:49.12 The land of Israel. 00:23:49.15\00:23:51.48 Now listen carefully to what I'm going to say. 00:23:51.51\00:23:53.35 In Daniel chapter 8, the little horn represents both 00:23:54.12\00:23:58.25 pagan Rome and papal Rome. 00:23:58.28\00:24:01.64 And you'll notice as we study this prophecy 00:24:02.45\00:24:04.95 that the little horn at first conquers only horizontally 00:24:05.25\00:24:11.01 and geographically. 00:24:11.04\00:24:12.40 But suddenly that little horn that is only conquering... 00:24:13.15\00:24:17.25 According to this, where? 00:24:17.28\00:24:19.65 The south, the east, and the Glorious Land. 00:24:19.68\00:24:22.57 Suddenly he shifts. 00:24:22.60\00:24:24.75 And now he's fighting against whom? 00:24:25.05\00:24:27.47 He's fighting against the God of heaven. 00:24:27.84\00:24:29.71 Is this true of what happened in Daniel 7 with Rome? 00:24:29.74\00:24:33.19 The iron monarchy of Rome conquered how? 00:24:33.72\00:24:36.82 Horizontally. 00:24:36.85\00:24:38.01 But then suddenly the little horn, which is also Rome, 00:24:38.04\00:24:41.02 now does what? 00:24:41.05\00:24:42.35 It speaks blasphemies against the Most High, 00:24:42.71\00:24:45.24 and it persecuted the saints of the Most High, 00:24:45.27\00:24:47.78 and it thinks it can change the law of the Most High. 00:24:47.81\00:24:50.45 Now you say, "Why is this little horn portrayed as coming 00:24:51.35\00:24:54.77 from one of the four kingdoms that came from the kingdom 00:24:54.80\00:24:59.23 of Alexander the Great?" 00:24:59.26\00:25:01.14 Let me tell you why. 00:25:01.17\00:25:02.38 The reason why is because historians, such as Virgil... 00:25:02.83\00:25:06.52 You ever heard of Virgil? 00:25:06.80\00:25:08.06 ...Seneca, and other historians of Rome, make it very clear 00:25:08.60\00:25:14.83 that Roman religion and Roman civilization 00:25:15.03\00:25:19.55 and Roman culture had their origins in Asia Minor, 00:25:19.58\00:25:25.24 specifically in Pergamum. 00:25:25.27\00:25:27.15 And that was one of the kingdoms into which 00:25:27.50\00:25:30.85 the kingdom of Alexander the Great was divided. 00:25:30.88\00:25:33.48 In other words, it is strictly true that the Roman Empire 00:25:33.74\00:25:38.83 grew out of Asia Minor. 00:25:38.93\00:25:41.72 It grew out of the kingdom of Pergamum, which was 00:25:41.75\00:25:44.43 one of the four kingdoms that were formed after the fall 00:25:44.46\00:25:49.27 of Alexander the Great. 00:25:49.30\00:25:51.66 Now let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 10. 00:25:52.80\00:25:55.74 By the way, if you're interested in studying this 00:25:56.10\00:25:58.10 more extensively, I wrote a document, it's about 00:25:58.40\00:26:02.95 30 pages long, on the whole message of Daniel chapter 8. 00:26:02.98\00:26:08.20 And it has a lot more material than what I'm able to 00:26:08.23\00:26:10.98 present here tonight and in our next lecture. 00:26:11.01\00:26:13.72 So if you really want to get into an in-depth study of 00:26:13.75\00:26:17.04 these things, I have quotations from historians and so on 00:26:17.07\00:26:19.49 showing that Roman civilization, religion, 00:26:19.52\00:26:23.04 culture, arose from one of those kingdoms of Greece. 00:26:23.07\00:26:27.61 Now let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 10. 00:26:27.64\00:26:29.91 Suddenly this little horn, who's only concerned with conquering 00:26:29.94\00:26:34.50 geographically and horizontally, suddenly, like the little horn 00:26:34.80\00:26:38.67 of Daniel chapter 7, it starts fighting against 00:26:38.70\00:26:41.86 the God of heaven. 00:26:41.89\00:26:43.10 Now his fight becomes vertical. 00:26:43.13\00:26:45.23 Notice Daniel chapter 8 and verse 10. 00:26:45.54\00:26:47.50 It says, "And it grew up to the..." What? 00:26:47.80\00:26:51.02 Now the question is, what is represented by the host 00:27:00.73\00:27:03.70 or by these stars? 00:27:03.73\00:27:05.33 You know, we might be tempted to think that they were angels, 00:27:05.67\00:27:07.92 but somehow I don't think that the little horn was 00:27:07.95\00:27:11.74 able to grab the angels and thrown them to the ground 00:27:11.77\00:27:14.28 and trample on them. 00:27:14.31\00:27:15.44 In fact, the Bible uses the word "host," not only to 00:27:15.96\00:27:18.88 describe the heavenly host of God, but to describe 00:27:18.91\00:27:22.16 His earthly people, His earthly army. 00:27:22.19\00:27:24.76 Because in Scripture, the church is described as what? 00:27:24.79\00:27:29.23 As an army. 00:27:29.50\00:27:30.72 Let me prove that. 00:27:30.75\00:27:31.90 Go with me to 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verse 45. 00:27:32.30\00:27:38.63 1 Samuel chapter 17 and verse 45. 00:27:38.66\00:27:42.31 This is speaking about the time that David met Goliath. 00:27:42.34\00:27:45.79 And it says there, "Then David said to the Philistine, 00:27:45.82\00:27:49.60 'You come to me with sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. 00:27:49.63\00:27:54.69 But I come to you in the name of the...'" What? 00:27:54.99\00:27:58.80 "...of the Lord of hosts..." 00:27:58.83\00:28:01.15 And now notice who the hosts are. 00:28:01.18\00:28:04.42 "...the Lord of hosts, the God of the..." What? 00:28:04.45\00:28:07.68 "...of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled." 00:28:07.71\00:28:12.27 So what is the host? 00:28:12.30\00:28:13.45 The armies of what? 00:28:13.48\00:28:14.90 The armies of Israel. 00:28:15.20\00:28:16.50 So what is this little horn doing? 00:28:16.70\00:28:18.59 Who is he casting down? 00:28:18.62\00:28:20.13 In Daniel 7, it says that the little horn would persecute 00:28:20.16\00:28:23.27 the saints of the Most High. 00:28:23.30\00:28:24.78 So here, the stars or God's host represents what? 00:28:25.22\00:28:30.17 It represents God's people. 00:28:30.47\00:28:32.49 Later on in the chapter we're going to find this 00:28:32.52\00:28:34.51 very clearly expressed. 00:28:34.54\00:28:36.64 And so the first thing that this little horn does is 00:28:36.84\00:28:39.97 the same thing as the little horn of Daniel 7. 00:28:40.00\00:28:42.47 He persecutes the saints and he throws them to the ground 00:28:42.50\00:28:46.05 and he tramples them. 00:28:46.08\00:28:47.81 But then you'll notice in Daniel chapter 8 and verse 11 00:28:48.88\00:28:51.92 that he goes even further. 00:28:52.12\00:28:53.47 It says in Daniel 8:11... 00:28:53.73\00:28:55.43 The leader of the host, in other words. 00:29:03.83\00:29:07.03 "...and by him," that is, by the little horn, 00:29:08.22\00:29:10.97 "the daily sacrifices..." 00:29:11.37\00:29:13.29 You need to delete that word "sacrifices," 00:29:13.32\00:29:15.53 because it is not in the Hebrew. 00:29:15.56\00:29:17.97 It's only the word "daily." 00:29:18.00\00:29:19.84 And we'll come to that in a minute. 00:29:20.27\00:29:22.20 Interesting. 00:29:37.05\00:29:38.20 Now the question is, who is this Prince of the host? 00:29:38.63\00:29:41.71 Well, this identical expression is used only in one other place 00:29:42.38\00:29:47.17 in the whole Bible, "the Prince of the host." 00:29:47.20\00:29:50.08 It's not translated the same, but it's the 00:29:50.11\00:29:51.96 identical expression. 00:29:51.99\00:29:53.31 Joshua chapter 5 and verses 13 through 15. 00:29:53.34\00:29:56.82 Joshua chapter 5 and verses 13 through 15. 00:29:57.28\00:29:59.91 Let's find out who this Prince of the host is 00:29:59.94\00:30:02.13 from whom the daily is taken away 00:30:02.16\00:30:04.70 and the Sanctuary is cast down. 00:30:04.73\00:30:07.50 Notice Joshua 5 verse 13. 00:30:07.53\00:30:09.55 This is outside of the city of Jericho. 00:30:09.58\00:30:11.44 We read this once before. 00:30:11.47\00:30:12.94 And Joshua meets this man with a sword in his hand. 00:30:13.46\00:30:16.95 It says, "And it came to pass when Joshua was by Jericho 00:30:16.98\00:30:20.73 that he lifted his eyes and looked. 00:30:20.76\00:30:22.82 And behold, a man stood opposite him with his sword 00:30:22.85\00:30:26.75 drawn in his hand. 00:30:26.78\00:30:28.05 And Joshua went to him and said to him, 00:30:28.23\00:30:30.44 'Are you for us or for our adversaries?' 00:30:30.47\00:30:34.21 So He said, 'No, but as Commander of the army 00:30:35.10\00:30:40.19 of the Lord I have now come.'" 00:30:40.22\00:30:42.91 That expression, "Commander of the army of the Lord," 00:30:43.54\00:30:46.22 is the identical expression, "Prince of the host." 00:30:46.25\00:30:48.94 It's not translated the same, but in Hebrew it's identical. 00:30:49.72\00:30:53.22 And so He says, "'No, but as Commander of the army 00:30:53.42\00:30:57.10 of the Lord I have now come.' 00:30:57.13\00:30:58.37 And Joshua..." What did Joshua do? 00:30:58.40\00:31:00.98 Oh, it says he, "fell on his face to the earth..." 00:31:01.54\00:31:05.21 And what? 00:31:05.24\00:31:06.27 Was this a common ordinary man? 00:31:06.90\00:31:08.78 No, this was Jesus. 00:31:09.12\00:31:10.73 "...and said to Him, 'What does my Lord say to His servant?' 00:31:10.76\00:31:15.53 Then the Commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, 00:31:15.81\00:31:19.19 'Take your sandal off your foot, for the place 00:31:19.22\00:31:23.32 where you stand is holy.'" 00:31:23.35\00:31:25.68 Who was that Prince of the host? 00:31:26.64\00:31:28.44 It's none other than Jesus Christ. 00:31:28.84\00:31:31.58 So what does the little horn do? 00:31:31.61\00:31:34.53 He even attacks the Prince of the host, Jesus Christ. 00:31:34.56\00:31:38.17 And he takes away from Jesus, what? 00:31:38.20\00:31:40.73 The daily. 00:31:41.18\00:31:42.42 And he casts the Sanctuary to the ground. 00:31:42.65\00:31:45.37 Now you say, "What is meant by that, the daily?" 00:31:45.40\00:31:48.60 As I mentioned, the word, "sacrifice," is not there. 00:31:49.59\00:31:52.95 It's added by the translators, but it is nowhere to be found 00:31:52.98\00:31:56.41 in the original Hebrew. 00:31:56.44\00:31:57.73 You see, the translators, they felt that this little horn 00:31:58.92\00:32:01.84 represented Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:32:01.87\00:32:03.50 And Antiochus Epiphanes eliminated the sacrifices 00:32:03.53\00:32:07.03 in the temple for three years. 00:32:07.06\00:32:08.36 So because they're thinking Antiochus Epiphanes, 00:32:08.39\00:32:11.02 they're translating, "daily sacrifices." 00:32:11.05\00:32:13.83 The fact is that the word "daily" here is an adjective 00:32:13.86\00:32:17.39 that has no noun to qualify. 00:32:17.42\00:32:19.59 The word simply means, something that goes on and on and on 00:32:20.25\00:32:24.93 without interruption. 00:32:24.96\00:32:26.17 In other words, it's a technical term. 00:32:26.71\00:32:28.79 It should be understood, not as an adjective, 00:32:28.82\00:32:31.08 although technically it is, it should be understood as a noun. 00:32:31.11\00:32:35.75 And of course the question is, he took away the daily what? 00:32:36.81\00:32:41.15 Well it must have something to do with the Sanctuary, right? 00:32:42.25\00:32:44.98 Because the whole theme of Daniel chapter 8 00:32:45.40\00:32:47.47 is the Sanctuary, correct? 00:32:47.50\00:32:49.01 Even the two animals that you find in Daniel chapter 8 00:32:49.23\00:32:52.51 are the two most important animals of the Sanctuary. 00:32:52.54\00:32:55.46 The daily service, morning and evening, a ram was sacrificed. 00:32:55.70\00:33:00.13 And the yearly service, a he goat was sacrificed. 00:33:00.33\00:33:04.18 So God is saying by choosing these two beasts, 00:33:04.21\00:33:06.80 the central theme of Daniel 8 is what? 00:33:06.83\00:33:10.00 The Sanctuary. 00:33:10.03\00:33:11.06 So the question is, the little horn took away the daily. 00:33:11.09\00:33:14.15 The question is, the daily what? 00:33:14.18\00:33:16.14 Well, we need to look at the answer in the Sanctuary. 00:33:17.42\00:33:20.37 Is that word used in connection with the Sanctuary? 00:33:20.40\00:33:22.98 It most certainly is. 00:33:23.01\00:33:24.77 Now allow me to tell you that this word is used 00:33:25.39\00:33:29.03 in connection with the ministry of the priest in the court 00:33:29.74\00:33:34.13 and in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:33:34.16\00:33:36.58 It's never used to refer to anything that the priest does 00:33:37.09\00:33:40.66 in the Most Holy Place. 00:33:40.69\00:33:41.97 It's used to refer to what he did in the court and in the 00:33:42.00\00:33:45.88 Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:33:45.91\00:33:47.34 Let me mention several verses where this very word, 00:33:47.37\00:33:51.01 "tamid," is used. 00:33:51.04\00:33:53.01 Exodus 28 and verse 30. 00:33:53.04\00:33:55.34 And we're going to go quickly. 00:33:55.37\00:33:56.69 Exodus 28 and verse 30. 00:33:56.72\00:33:58.77 The high priest who ministered in the Holy Place, 00:33:59.05\00:34:03.07 the Bible says that he ministered continually. 00:34:03.10\00:34:05.83 Notice what it says there. 00:34:06.37\00:34:08.29 "Continually," that's the word "tamid." 00:34:25.27\00:34:27.05 Notice the similar language in Hebrews 7:23-25 00:34:27.85\00:34:31.68 where it talks about Jesus. 00:34:31.71\00:34:33.22 Hebrews 7 verses 23 through 25. 00:34:33.25\00:34:36.19 Speaking about the old system, it says... 00:34:36.82\00:34:38.70 See that word, "continuing?" 00:34:45.08\00:34:46.25 They couldn't continue because they what? 00:34:47.14\00:34:48.97 Because they died. And now notice... 00:34:49.00\00:34:50.89 Is the intercession of Jesus Christ continual? 00:35:11.77\00:35:14.52 Is it tamid? 00:35:15.17\00:35:16.63 See, it really shouldn't even be translated "daily." 00:35:16.66\00:35:19.72 It should be translated, "continual." 00:35:19.75\00:35:22.01 Notice Exodus chapter 29 and verse 42. 00:35:22.59\00:35:26.10 The sacrifices that were offered morning and evening 00:35:26.13\00:35:28.83 are also referred to by the word "tamid," continual. 00:35:28.86\00:35:33.08 It says... 00:35:33.11\00:35:34.14 Notice, the offering was what? 00:35:43.39\00:35:45.60 The continual burnt offering. 00:35:45.63\00:35:48.19 The fire that was used to burn the sacrifices 00:35:48.22\00:35:51.29 was also a continual fire. 00:35:51.72\00:35:54.26 Notice Leviticus chapter 6 and verse 13. 00:35:54.46\00:35:57.57 In other words, it was to be burning continually. 00:36:04.70\00:36:07.90 The table of showbread, the bread on the table, 00:36:08.17\00:36:11.79 it called the continual bread. 00:36:11.89\00:36:13.98 Notice Exodus chapter 25 and verse 30. 00:36:14.41\00:36:17.24 Exodus chapter 25 and verse 30. 00:36:17.27\00:36:19.55 "And you shall set the showbread on the table before Me always." 00:36:19.58\00:36:24.19 It's translated "always," but it's the word "tamid." 00:36:24.22\00:36:26.83 It could be translated, "You shall set the showbread 00:36:26.86\00:36:29.81 on the table before Me continually." 00:36:29.84\00:36:32.56 Notice also that the seven lamps of the Holy Place 00:36:33.53\00:36:36.59 are called the continual lamps. 00:36:36.62\00:36:38.51 Leviticus chapter 24 and verses 1 through 4. 00:36:38.87\00:36:41.41 Leviticus chapter 24 and verses 1 through 4. 00:36:41.81\00:36:44.21 There's the word, "continually." 00:36:54.03\00:36:55.79 "Continually," there's the word again. 00:37:03.98\00:37:05.71 "Continually," once again the same word. 00:37:13.97\00:37:16.35 So the continual refers to the sacrifice, to the ministration 00:37:16.78\00:37:19.68 of the priest in the Holy Place, to the fire that was 00:37:19.71\00:37:21.88 offered in the court. 00:37:21.91\00:37:23.01 It refers to the showbread, it refers to the seven lamps. 00:37:23.04\00:37:26.06 It also refers to the golden altar of incense 00:37:26.09\00:37:29.17 in the Holy Place. 00:37:29.20\00:37:30.40 Notice Exodus chapter 30 and verse 8. 00:37:30.43\00:37:32.71 Exodus chapter 30 and verse 8. 00:37:32.74\00:37:34.52 Well the translation says, "a perpetual incense." 00:37:42.50\00:37:46.37 It's the same identical word. 00:37:46.40\00:37:47.92 It could be, "a continual incense before the Lord 00:37:47.95\00:37:51.33 throughout your generations." 00:37:51.36\00:37:53.47 Now let me ask you, what did the altar and the lampstand 00:37:54.62\00:38:01.11 and the showbread and the priest and the 00:38:01.67\00:38:05.74 altar of incense represent? 00:38:05.77\00:38:07.73 They represented different aspects of the 00:38:08.14\00:38:10.99 saving ministry of whom? 00:38:11.02\00:38:12.57 Of the saving ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:38:13.32\00:38:16.61 Now notice, the place of the Sanctuary was going to be what? 00:38:17.22\00:38:20.55 Cast down to the earth. 00:38:20.58\00:38:22.87 Where does Jesus minister? 00:38:23.07\00:38:24.75 He ministers in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:38:25.69\00:38:27.73 What was the little horn going to do? 00:38:27.76\00:38:29.56 The little horn was going to take the heavenly ministry 00:38:29.91\00:38:32.76 of Christ and he was going to cast it where? 00:38:32.79\00:38:35.54 To the earth. 00:38:35.57\00:38:36.62 He was going to establish a rival earthly ministry 00:38:36.65\00:38:39.59 in place of the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:38:39.62\00:38:42.89 Let me ask you, how many times does Jesus have to die? 00:38:43.80\00:38:46.44 The book of Hebrews chapter 7 verse 27 says 00:38:48.00\00:38:50.52 that He dies once for all. 00:38:50.55\00:38:52.63 But in the Roman Catholic Church, they teach that 00:38:54.16\00:38:56.50 at every mass Jesus Christ is sacrificed once again. 00:38:56.53\00:39:00.39 Interesting. 00:39:01.32\00:39:02.46 But there's more. 00:39:02.93\00:39:04.04 They believe that in the little wafer host, Jesus is contained 00:39:04.94\00:39:09.20 in each one of those wafer hosts. 00:39:09.23\00:39:11.18 If there's ten million people participating in the host, 00:39:11.21\00:39:14.26 Christ is fully and completely in each one of them. 00:39:14.79\00:39:17.61 Furthermore, the interesting thing is that this little host 00:39:18.89\00:39:24.46 is what shape? 00:39:24.49\00:39:25.84 Round. 00:39:26.45\00:39:27.48 And what color is it? 00:39:27.51\00:39:28.87 It's yellow. 00:39:29.90\00:39:31.42 What is round and yellow? 00:39:32.62\00:39:34.48 The sun. 00:39:35.31\00:39:36.36 Now listen carefully. 00:39:36.39\00:39:37.50 The host is kept in an artifact that is called, the tabernacle. 00:39:38.31\00:39:42.86 It other words, it's a little circle 00:39:44.16\00:39:45.58 and the host is placed inside. 00:39:45.61\00:39:46.99 And you know, outside the place where you put the host, 00:39:47.02\00:39:50.05 there are the rays of the sun sprouting out. 00:39:50.52\00:39:54.22 I don't know whether you've ever seen that at the 00:39:54.71\00:39:56.37 Roman Catholic Church. 00:39:56.40\00:39:57.45 But it's very interesting. 00:39:57.48\00:39:58.76 And Catholics are told that when the host is raised up, 00:39:59.48\00:40:03.54 they are to bow and they are to what? 00:40:03.57\00:40:06.18 They are to worship the host, because Jesus is in the host. 00:40:06.46\00:40:11.37 Furthermore... 00:40:11.86\00:40:13.01 Listen to what I'm going to say. 00:40:13.04\00:40:14.51 ...the Roman Catholic Church teaches that when the priests 00:40:14.54\00:40:17.56 pronounces those words, "Hoc est corpus meum," 00:40:17.59\00:40:21.06 "That is my body," he says it in Latin in the traditional way, 00:40:21.09\00:40:25.00 what he does is he creates Jesus Christ 00:40:25.40\00:40:30.22 really and truly in the host. 00:40:30.46\00:40:33.52 And the host is no longer bread, even though 00:40:33.81\00:40:36.60 it appears like bread. 00:40:36.63\00:40:37.93 The appearance doesn't change. 00:40:37.96\00:40:39.30 But it is the real body of Jesus Christ. 00:40:39.33\00:40:41.64 And the grape juice, or the wine, that the priest drinks 00:40:41.67\00:40:45.40 is the real blood of Jesus Christ, even though 00:40:45.43\00:40:48.62 it tastes like grape juice. 00:40:48.65\00:40:50.33 So where is the focus of people in Roman Catholicism? 00:40:51.07\00:40:54.69 Is it upon the body and blood of Jesus Christ 00:40:54.72\00:40:58.08 in heaven who died once for all for us? 00:40:58.11\00:41:01.91 No, it is focused where? 00:41:02.11\00:41:04.11 It is focused on earth. 00:41:04.14\00:41:06.08 And an earthly system cannot save. 00:41:07.49\00:41:10.31 This is very, very serious. 00:41:10.34\00:41:12.01 In fact, do you know that one Roman Catholic theologian 00:41:12.04\00:41:14.80 said that the priest could be called 00:41:14.83\00:41:17.53 the creator of his Creator? 00:41:17.56\00:41:20.24 Because he creates Jesus in the host. 00:41:20.69\00:41:23.28 Amazing. 00:41:24.33\00:41:25.40 What does the candlestick represent? 00:41:27.75\00:41:29.25 We already studied this. 00:41:29.28\00:41:30.31 What does the candlestick represent? 00:41:30.34\00:41:31.98 It represents the oil of the Holy Spirit 00:41:33.33\00:41:35.63 that is given to the church so the church can give what? 00:41:35.92\00:41:40.47 So it can give light. 00:41:41.57\00:41:42.81 What happened during the period of the 00:41:43.15\00:41:44.56 dominion of the little horn? 00:41:44.76\00:41:46.34 The light flickered. 00:41:47.69\00:41:48.83 That's why it's called, what kind of ages? 00:41:48.86\00:41:51.24 It's called the Dark Ages. 00:41:51.52\00:41:53.31 Because the church no longer preached the gospel 00:41:54.24\00:41:56.58 of Jesus Christ, which is spoken of as light in Scripture. 00:41:56.61\00:41:59.64 In other words, it affected the mission and the 00:42:00.25\00:42:04.91 message of the church. 00:42:04.94\00:42:06.83 What about the showbread? 00:42:07.21\00:42:08.64 What does the showbread represent? 00:42:08.67\00:42:10.54 The showbread represents the Word of God. 00:42:10.57\00:42:12.38 Twelve loaves because there's enough to feed all of Israel, 00:42:12.41\00:42:15.53 all of God's people. 00:42:15.56\00:42:16.82 What did the Roman Catholic Church establish in place of 00:42:17.39\00:42:21.42 the Word of God? 00:42:21.45\00:42:22.48 Tradition. 00:42:23.35\00:42:24.40 All kinds of traditions came into the church. 00:42:24.83\00:42:27.37 Purgatory, limbo, celibacy, auricular confession, 00:42:27.40\00:42:30.83 an eternally burning hell, lent, processions, the mass, 00:42:30.86\00:42:34.13 relics, canonizations of saints, the rosary, 00:42:34.16\00:42:36.77 bowing before images, the immaculate conception, 00:42:36.80\00:42:39.46 the assumption of Mary, the baptism of infants 00:42:39.49\00:42:42.58 by sprinkling, novenas, the observance of Sunday. 00:42:42.61\00:42:45.65 I could continue the list. 00:42:45.68\00:42:47.15 None of which are taught in Holy Scripture. 00:42:48.04\00:42:50.44 In other words, instead of the Word of God 00:42:51.26\00:42:54.45 being the rule of the church, the result was that the church 00:42:54.48\00:42:59.80 established tradition. 00:43:00.41\00:43:02.12 And therefore, people were starving to death on earth. 00:43:02.15\00:43:05.63 By the way, at the Council of Toulouse in the year 1229, 00:43:05.95\00:43:09.98 the Roman Catholic Church officially forbade 00:43:10.37\00:43:13.74 lay people from reading the Scriptures. 00:43:13.77\00:43:16.35 And there were other decrees by other councils where 00:43:16.65\00:43:18.94 people were forbidden from reading the Bible. 00:43:18.97\00:43:21.10 That's the reason why Martin Luther, even when he was a monk 00:43:21.13\00:43:24.28 and he discovered a Bible, he was surprised. 00:43:24.31\00:43:26.75 Because the Bible was not accessible. 00:43:28.10\00:43:30.04 It was in Latin. 00:43:30.07\00:43:31.22 In fact, people like Wycliffe, you know, when he translated 00:43:31.42\00:43:35.17 the Bible into English, they burned him at the stake 00:43:35.20\00:43:38.54 for translating the Bible into a language that 00:43:39.41\00:43:41.68 people could understand. 00:43:41.71\00:43:43.03 And so the Roman Catholic Church substituted. 00:43:43.93\00:43:45.98 Instead of the bread, it substituted tradition. 00:43:46.01\00:43:49.53 Let me ask you, what does the altar of incense represent? 00:43:49.73\00:43:52.74 The altar of incense represents that when we pray, 00:43:53.25\00:43:56.23 our prayers are blended with the perfect merits of 00:43:56.26\00:43:59.34 Christ's righteousness and we are accepted 00:43:59.37\00:44:02.14 in the sight of God. 00:44:02.17\00:44:03.62 Question, what did the Roman Catholic Church establish 00:44:04.03\00:44:07.03 in place of the only intercession of Christ? 00:44:07.06\00:44:10.14 We have one mediator between God and man; 00:44:10.17\00:44:12.83 Jesus Christ the Man, Scripture says. 00:44:12.86\00:44:15.13 What does the Roman Catholic Church teach? 00:44:15.33\00:44:17.48 They say that we are suppose to confess to whom? 00:44:17.51\00:44:20.43 We are suppose to confess our sins to a priest, 00:44:20.92\00:44:23.38 an earthly priest. 00:44:23.41\00:44:25.06 And not only that, they say that if we want access 00:44:26.23\00:44:29.15 to Jesus Christ, we have to go through the virgin Mary. 00:44:29.18\00:44:32.41 And we have to go through the saints. 00:44:33.26\00:44:35.82 You know why they teach that? 00:44:35.85\00:44:37.40 Even though they would never admit it, because in their 00:44:38.04\00:44:40.74 theological formulations they don't say this, 00:44:40.77\00:44:43.18 but in practical reality it's this way. 00:44:43.21\00:44:46.33 You see, Jesus is seen by Roman Catholics as a stern judge. 00:44:46.36\00:44:51.75 See, He was human but He really wasn't exactly like one of us. 00:44:53.34\00:44:57.74 So we have to go through someone who can really understand us. 00:44:57.77\00:45:01.61 Like Mary and like the saints. 00:45:01.64\00:45:05.65 And so what do we have happening here? 00:45:06.82\00:45:08.80 All of the functions that belong to Jesus Christ 00:45:09.31\00:45:12.94 in the heavenly Sanctuary, what did the papacy do? 00:45:12.97\00:45:16.07 What did the little horn do? 00:45:16.10\00:45:17.58 It took all of those functions and it placed them where? 00:45:17.61\00:45:21.12 And it placed them on earth. 00:45:21.15\00:45:22.72 Let me ask you, is salvation at stake here? 00:45:22.75\00:45:25.89 It most certainly is. 00:45:26.41\00:45:28.12 Are you understanding what the taking away of the daily is? 00:45:28.83\00:45:31.55 He took away the continual ministration of Christ. 00:45:32.01\00:45:35.19 His feeding the church with the bread, 00:45:35.68\00:45:37.94 His interceding for the church, 00:45:37.97\00:45:40.29 His giving the Holy Spirit to the church 00:45:40.32\00:45:42.98 so that it could shed light, 00:45:43.01\00:45:44.15 the preaching that Jesus died once for all 00:45:44.76\00:45:47.63 for the sins of the world. 00:45:47.66\00:45:49.06 And by the way, the Roman Catholic Church also established 00:45:49.80\00:45:52.31 the idea that, you know, you have to do penance 00:45:52.34\00:45:55.09 in order for your sins to be forgiven. 00:45:55.12\00:45:57.37 So it wasn't enough for Jesus to die on the cross. 00:45:57.40\00:46:00.46 You still have to do part of the payment yourself. 00:46:01.16\00:46:04.14 Are you understanding what Daniel 8 is talking about? 00:46:05.10\00:46:07.85 It's very serious. 00:46:08.26\00:46:09.53 It has to do with salvation. 00:46:09.56\00:46:11.07 Now let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 12. 00:46:11.76\00:46:14.09 It says, listen carefully... 00:46:15.59\00:46:18.61 The word, "sacrifices," shouldn't be there. 00:46:23.88\00:46:25.50 What does that mean, an army was given to him? 00:46:25.53\00:46:28.08 What did we talk about when we dealt 00:46:28.11\00:46:29.84 with the feet of the image? 00:46:29.87\00:46:30.90 What was joined together? 00:46:30.93\00:46:32.23 Church and what? State. 00:46:33.55\00:46:35.78 How did the church make sure that people kept this 00:46:35.81\00:46:39.50 system going that we talked about? 00:46:39.53\00:46:41.49 The church couldn't do it as a church. 00:46:42.00\00:46:43.80 They had to have an army. 00:46:43.83\00:46:45.18 They had to have a political power to back them up. 00:46:45.21\00:46:47.67 Is that exactly what happened during the Dark Ages? 00:46:48.04\00:46:50.49 Did the church appeal to the arm of the state to 00:46:50.90\00:46:53.38 punish anyone who was not in favor of their beliefs 00:46:53.41\00:46:56.52 and their practices? 00:46:56.55\00:46:57.83 All you have to do is read the history books. 00:46:57.86\00:47:01.06 And so it says... 00:47:01.18\00:47:02.21 Not the daily "sacrifices." The "daily." 00:47:07.06\00:47:09.26 Did the little horn prosper when it was persecuting the saints? 00:47:18.85\00:47:22.57 Absolutely, it prospered. 00:47:22.60\00:47:23.88 Things went well. 00:47:23.91\00:47:25.42 Was it necessary to perform a judgment in heaven 00:47:27.52\00:47:29.66 to rectify things? 00:47:29.69\00:47:30.89 Do you think? 00:47:32.26\00:47:33.29 Absolutely. 00:47:33.90\00:47:34.93 And we're going to be coming to that in a few moments. 00:47:34.96\00:47:37.31 Now notice, it continues saying... 00:47:37.52\00:47:39.77 And by the way, the word that is used here, "prosper," 00:47:41.03\00:47:45.83 is the same idea that is used in Daniel chapter 7 00:47:45.86\00:47:49.46 for the little horn. 00:47:49.49\00:47:50.81 Now, when we get to this point of the vision, 00:47:51.01\00:47:54.15 the video goes blank. 00:47:54.93\00:47:56.56 And now Daniel can only hear the audio. 00:47:57.74\00:48:00.16 Daniel chapter 8 verses 13 and 14. 00:48:01.95\00:48:04.51 The video goes blank. 00:48:04.87\00:48:06.11 Now he's not seeing, he's only hearing. 00:48:06.14\00:48:07.86 He's hearing a conversation between two angels. 00:48:07.89\00:48:10.11 The word, "vision," that is the word, "chazon." 00:48:23.33\00:48:24.99 Now let me ask you, what does the "chazon" include? 00:48:25.02\00:48:27.61 It includes the whole vision, right? 00:48:29.55\00:48:31.40 Does it include Medo-Persia? 00:48:31.70\00:48:33.50 Does it include Greece? 00:48:33.82\00:48:35.29 Does it include the first king of Greece, the four horns, 00:48:35.66\00:48:39.67 the little horn in its first and second stages? 00:48:39.70\00:48:42.47 That's the vision, that's the "chazon." 00:48:42.50\00:48:44.67 And so the question is, "How long..." 00:48:45.79\00:48:47.70 A better translation would be, 00:48:47.73\00:48:48.81 "Until when will the chazon be..." 00:48:48.84\00:48:52.11 Eliminate the word, "sacrifices." 00:48:54.16\00:48:55.42 Not there. 00:48:55.45\00:48:56.48 You know, we have a similar scene to this in 00:49:05.65\00:49:07.37 Revelation chapter 6 and verses 9 through 11. 00:49:07.40\00:49:10.28 There you have some martyrs that are crying out 00:49:11.75\00:49:13.65 from under the altar. 00:49:13.68\00:49:14.71 This is the fifth seal. 00:49:14.74\00:49:15.77 I wish we had time to speak about this. 00:49:15.80\00:49:17.02 This is the same historical time period. 00:49:17.05\00:49:18.78 And they're crying out and they're saying... 00:49:19.14\00:49:21.56 Because they've been mowed down by the church 00:49:21.59\00:49:24.77 that claims to be the church of Jesus Christ. 00:49:25.23\00:49:27.14 They're crying out, they're saying, "Lord, until when?" 00:49:27.17\00:49:30.41 Same question. 00:49:30.79\00:49:31.82 "Will you not judge and avenge our blood 00:49:32.02\00:49:35.67 on those who have shed our blood upon the earth?" 00:49:35.90\00:49:39.00 Now notice verse 14. 00:49:40.59\00:49:42.59 "And he said to me..." 00:49:43.10\00:49:44.84 Literally, it says in Hebrew, "For two-thousand three-hundred 00:49:50.85\00:49:53.55 evening mornings." 00:49:53.58\00:49:54.98 In other words, units that are composed of evening and morning. 00:49:55.01\00:49:58.90 In other words, days. 00:49:58.93\00:49:59.96 The translation, "days," is good. 00:49:59.99\00:50:01.11 Now listen, there's a very interesting nuance here. 00:50:09.32\00:50:11.58 Before Daniel 8 verse 14, the word that is used for 00:50:12.62\00:50:17.99 "Sanctuary" is the word, "miqdash." 00:50:18.02\00:50:22.57 But in Daniel chapter 8 and verse 14, the word for 00:50:23.87\00:50:27.43 "Sanctuary" is changed. 00:50:27.46\00:50:29.34 Instead of the word "miqdash," it uses the word, "qodesh." 00:50:30.84\00:50:35.34 Interesting, "The Sanctuary shall be cleansed." 00:50:37.40\00:50:39.70 It's not the entire Sanctuary that's been talked about. 00:50:39.73\00:50:42.96 It must be something different because 00:50:43.24\00:50:45.15 a different word is used. 00:50:45.18\00:50:46.40 Are you understanding me? 00:50:46.43\00:50:47.76 So the Sanctuary to be cleansed is not the "miqdash," 00:50:48.50\00:50:51.48 the whole Sanctuary structure. 00:50:51.51\00:50:53.16 It is the "qodesh." 00:50:53.19\00:50:54.88 Which must refer to the Most Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:50:56.09\00:50:58.96 And we'll notice that a little bit later on. 00:50:58.99\00:51:01.07 Now notice Daniel 8 verses 15 to 19. 00:51:01.48\00:51:04.28 "The vision;" the chazon. 00:51:09.73\00:51:11.18 That word, "appearance," is the same word that's 00:51:18.50\00:51:21.10 translated, "vision," we're going to notice, in verse 16. 00:51:21.13\00:51:27.38 Notice, so it says... 00:51:27.41\00:51:29.25 "The vision;" the mareh. 00:51:47.92\00:51:49.27 See, if you only were reading in English, 00:51:50.92\00:51:54.20 you wouldn't know that a different word 00:51:54.99\00:51:56.30 is used for "vision" here. 00:51:56.33\00:51:57.62 It's not the word, "chazon." 00:51:58.69\00:51:59.98 It's not referring to the whole vision. 00:52:00.01\00:52:01.57 A different word is used. The word, "mareh." 00:52:02.85\00:52:05.64 Which is the same word that is used here where it says, 00:52:06.18\00:52:09.04 "one appeared to me having the appearance of a man." 00:52:09.07\00:52:12.24 The word, "appearance," is mareh. 00:52:12.27\00:52:14.22 The word, "mareh," is used in connection with the 2300 days. 00:52:15.03\00:52:19.33 With that particular conversation between 00:52:19.36\00:52:21.92 the two heavenly beings. 00:52:21.95\00:52:23.79 Verse 17. 00:52:24.10\00:52:25.20 "The vision;" this is the chazon. 00:52:34.02\00:52:35.35 And then he goes on to explain 00:52:56.30\00:52:59.24 the vision that we just looked at. 00:52:59.73\00:53:01.39 Let's go to Daniel chapter 8 and verse 20 very quickly. 00:53:02.69\00:53:05.41 We have very little time. 00:53:05.44\00:53:06.75 Now comes the explanation. 00:53:12.93\00:53:14.31 Verse 21. 00:53:14.34\00:53:15.77 Verse 22. 00:53:23.82\00:53:25.01 In other words, they're not going to be descendants 00:53:34.63\00:53:36.58 of Alexander the Great. 00:53:36.61\00:53:38.27 Is he explaining the vision? 00:53:39.33\00:53:40.91 Absolutely, the whole vision. 00:53:41.63\00:53:43.50 Verse 23. 00:53:44.03\00:53:45.16 That is, of the four. 00:53:47.52\00:53:48.70 "A king shall arise..." 00:53:51.52\00:53:52.67 This is the little horn, by the way. 00:53:52.70\00:53:54.31 In other words, he's a crafty politician. 00:53:59.90\00:54:02.27 Verse 24. 00:54:02.96\00:54:03.99 Why not by his own power? 00:54:10.80\00:54:12.83 Where is he going to get his power from? 00:54:13.35\00:54:15.06 What was given to him? 00:54:15.09\00:54:16.52 An army was given him. 00:54:17.07\00:54:19.05 In Daniel 7, who was it that helped him? 00:54:20.31\00:54:23.24 The iron monarchy of Rome. 00:54:24.47\00:54:26.11 The iron mixed with the clay. 00:54:26.14\00:54:27.75 And so it says in verse 24, "His power shall be mighty, 00:54:28.42\00:54:33.03 but not by his own power. 00:54:33.06\00:54:34.39 He shall..." What? 00:54:34.42\00:54:35.50 Ah, there's the host explained. 00:54:43.03\00:54:45.08 He was going to destroy what? 00:54:45.38\00:54:46.86 The holy people. 00:54:46.89\00:54:48.09 That's the stars that he was going to trample. 00:54:48.12\00:54:50.20 Now comes the last part which has to do with 00:54:50.23\00:54:52.48 the Prince of the host. 00:54:52.51\00:54:53.54 Verse 25. 00:54:53.57\00:54:54.60 See, he's a shrewd politician. 00:54:55.65\00:54:57.31 He's going to use deceit to prosper under his rule. 00:54:58.83\00:55:01.31 Is he going to be a haughty power like the little horn 00:55:04.35\00:55:06.66 who spoke blasphemies against the Most High 00:55:06.69\00:55:09.37 and tried to occupy the place of the Most High? 00:55:09.40\00:55:11.91 Absolutely. 00:55:11.94\00:55:12.97 And notice... 00:55:13.00\00:55:14.03 And now notice the last part. 00:55:17.26\00:55:18.96 That's the same as the "Prince of the host", right? 00:55:24.24\00:55:26.18 Is he explaining every element of this vision? 00:55:26.21\00:55:28.96 Absolutely. 00:55:28.99\00:55:30.20 And then he says... 00:55:30.27\00:55:31.31 But there was one part that he did not explain. 00:55:33.34\00:55:35.88 The one part he did not explain was the conversation 00:55:37.46\00:55:40.38 between the two angels; the time period. 00:55:40.41\00:55:42.58 He ends with the Prince of princes. 00:55:43.02\00:55:45.05 Let's notice verse 26. 00:55:45.46\00:55:47.17 "And the vision..." This is the mareh. 00:55:47.43\00:55:49.49 The conversation of the two, the appearance. 00:55:49.52\00:55:51.95 See, we know what the "mareh" is. 00:55:54.29\00:55:55.56 It has to do with the 2300 days, with the evening and mornings. 00:55:55.59\00:55:58.31 What was the only thing that was not explained 00:56:08.05\00:56:10.03 in Daniel chapter 8? 00:56:10.06\00:56:11.39 The 2300 day aspect. 00:56:12.45\00:56:14.45 Do you know why? 00:56:14.48\00:56:15.51 Because Daniel got sick. 00:56:16.62\00:56:18.43 Notice verse 27. 00:56:19.39\00:56:20.83 "The vision;" that is the mareh, not the chazon. 00:56:33.46\00:56:35.50 Had the "chazon" been explained? 00:56:35.53\00:56:37.01 Yes. 00:56:37.14\00:56:38.17 "I was astonished at the mareh, but no one understood it." 00:56:38.20\00:56:43.93 What didn't he understand? 00:56:44.13\00:56:45.51 He understood the chazon because God told him through Gabriel. 00:56:46.06\00:56:49.33 Everything up to the Prince of the host. 00:56:49.36\00:56:51.40 But the only thing that was left unexplained was what? 00:56:51.94\00:56:54.82 The time period. 00:56:55.34\00:56:56.43 The 2300 days. 00:56:57.09\00:56:58.79 Now the big question is, how can you know 00:56:59.68\00:57:03.26 where the 2300 days end if you don't know where they begin? 00:57:03.56\00:57:08.53 Daniel 8 doesn't tell us where they begin. 00:57:10.09\00:57:12.09 Where would you expect to find in the Bible the place 00:57:12.12\00:57:14.99 that would tell you where the 2300 days begin? 00:57:15.02\00:57:17.80 How about the next chapter? 00:57:18.72\00:57:20.69 We're going to notice in our next study that the 00:57:22.29\00:57:24.74 next chapter tells us the exact date for the beginning 00:57:24.77\00:57:28.69 of the cleansing of the Sanctuary. 00:57:28.72\00:57:30.78
