Let's pray. 00:00:34.57\00:00:35.94 Our loving heavenly Father, once again we approach 00:00:37.85\00:00:41.21 Your awesome and majestic throne. 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.81 Not coming in our own merits, but coming boldly to the 00:00:44.61\00:00:49.77 throne of grace through the merits of Your 00:00:49.80\00:00:52.45 beloved Son, Jesus Christ. 00:00:52.48\00:00:54.37 And Father, we know that our prayer is being heard 00:00:54.74\00:00:57.56 at this moment, because the merits of Jesus 00:00:57.59\00:01:00.49 are purifying our prayer and making it acceptable 00:01:00.52\00:01:04.11 in Your sight. 00:01:04.14\00:01:05.51 And Father, at this moment we plead for Your presence. 00:01:05.54\00:01:09.90 We ask that through the Holy Spirit in the ministration 00:01:09.93\00:01:12.99 of the angels You will open our minds that we might be able 00:01:13.02\00:01:16.51 to understand the great things about the two covenants. 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.89 And we thank You for hearing our prayer 00:01:20.14\00:01:22.24 for we ask it in Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:22.27\00:01:25.95 The Bible describes two primary laws. 00:01:28.95\00:01:35.91 And as we begin our study, we want to notice 00:01:36.63\00:01:41.57 what these two primary laws are according to Scripture. 00:01:41.60\00:01:46.60 The first of these laws is God's moral law which distinguishes 00:01:47.31\00:01:53.48 good from evil. 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.53 Turn with me in your Bibles to Genesis chapter 2 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.24 and verses 15 through 17. 00:01:59.27\00:02:01.94 Genesis chapter 2 and verses 15 through 17. 00:02:02.15\00:02:06.30 Here, we find a moral command by God. 00:02:06.94\00:02:10.86 It says there... 00:02:11.42\00:02:12.79 Notice, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:02:34.04\00:02:37.50 Now as we've studied in previous lectures, 00:02:46.04\00:02:48.30 actually within this one command were contained all of the 00:02:48.33\00:02:52.34 principles of the Ten Commandments. 00:02:52.37\00:02:54.23 I'm not going to go over that again because 00:02:54.26\00:02:56.48 we've already covered it. 00:02:56.51\00:02:57.88 But within this one command are all of the principles 00:02:57.91\00:03:01.49 of the Ten Commandments. 00:03:01.52\00:03:02.89 This is God's moral command. 00:03:02.92\00:03:05.90 To eat from the tree is evil. 00:03:06.59\00:03:09.74 And to not eat from the tree is good. 00:03:09.77\00:03:13.20 In other words, God lays down the ground rules of what is good 00:03:13.60\00:03:17.69 and what is evil. 00:03:17.72\00:03:19.78 And He expected obedience from Adam and Eve. 00:03:19.81\00:03:23.54 Basically, God was saying the following. 00:03:23.98\00:03:27.29 "If you disobey My command, that will be sin." 00:03:27.70\00:03:32.38 And the wages of sin is what? 00:03:33.08\00:03:36.28 The wages of sin is death. 00:03:36.31\00:03:39.08 So what I want you to notice is that God's moral law 00:03:39.11\00:03:42.40 existed before sin, before Adam and Eve sinned. 00:03:42.43\00:03:47.46 And the purpose of the moral law was to distinguish 00:03:47.77\00:03:50.96 right from wrong, good from evil. 00:03:51.26\00:03:54.58 Of course, we know that Adam and Eve sinned. 00:03:55.17\00:03:58.48 And when Adam and Eve sinned, God instituted another law. 00:03:58.91\00:04:03.68 It's known as the ceremonial law, 00:04:03.97\00:04:07.10 or the law of ordinances and sacrifices. 00:04:07.13\00:04:11.38 The ceremonial law comes in after sin. 00:04:12.01\00:04:15.90 It's not part of God's original plan. 00:04:16.37\00:04:19.48 The moral law existed before sin. 00:04:20.01\00:04:22.98 The ceremonial law comes in because of sin. 00:04:23.29\00:04:27.12 Now notice Genesis chapter 3 and verse 21, 00:04:27.71\00:04:31.28 which we've studied before. 00:04:31.31\00:04:32.87 Genesis 3 and verse 21. 00:04:32.90\00:04:36.17 Here, we're told that when Adam and Eve sinned 00:04:36.88\00:04:40.47 a sacrifice took place the day that they sinned. 00:04:40.81\00:04:45.07 It says there... 00:04:45.43\00:04:46.81 How was the shame of their nakedness covered? 00:04:57.84\00:05:01.14 It was covered by skins provided by what? 00:05:01.67\00:05:06.01 By the lamb. 00:05:06.21\00:05:07.58 Now what do you need to do to get the skin of an animal? 00:05:07.68\00:05:10.42 The animal has to be slain. 00:05:10.85\00:05:13.07 And so basically, God was showing from the very beginning 00:05:13.47\00:05:16.69 of human history that the way in which He was going to 00:05:16.72\00:05:20.21 cover the shame of man's nakedness, his sinfulness, 00:05:20.24\00:05:25.01 was by the death of the lamb. 00:05:25.04\00:05:26.94 And the death of the lamb would cover the shame 00:05:26.97\00:05:30.45 of their nakedness. 00:05:30.65\00:05:32.09 Notice that the law of sacrifices comes after 00:05:32.12\00:05:35.89 sin enters the world. 00:05:36.10\00:05:38.13 The moral law existed before sin came into the world. 00:05:38.16\00:05:43.23 Is that very clear in the book of Genesis? 00:05:43.26\00:05:45.79 It's absolutely clear. 00:05:45.82\00:05:47.38 The moral law before sin. 00:05:47.41\00:05:49.60 The ceremonial law of sacrifices after sin and because of sin. 00:05:49.63\00:05:55.43 Now we've noticed this in Genesis chapters 1 through 3. 00:05:56.11\00:05:59.31 But the question is, what about Genesis chapter 4 00:05:59.34\00:06:03.18 through Exodus 19? 00:06:03.21\00:06:05.85 Because in chapter 20 of Exodus, you have the Ten Commandments. 00:06:06.20\00:06:10.42 Well the fact is that the Ten Commandments, God's moral law, 00:06:10.70\00:06:15.16 existed from Genesis chapter 4 through Exodus chapter 19. 00:06:15.19\00:06:21.15 You say, "How do we know that?" 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.55 Let me give you some individuals that actually sinned before the 00:06:22.71\00:06:29.60 Ten Commandments were written on tables of stone 00:06:29.63\00:06:32.00 at Mount Sinai. 00:06:32.03\00:06:33.40 Let me ask you, did Satan sin in heaven? 00:06:33.43\00:06:36.49 We studied this. 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.16 The Bible says that he sinned from where? 00:06:38.19\00:06:41.76 From the beginning. 00:06:41.79\00:06:43.16 Did Adam sin? 00:06:43.19\00:06:44.56 Romans chapter 5 and verse 12 says that sin 00:06:44.74\00:06:48.33 entered the world through one man. 00:06:48.36\00:06:51.18 Did Cain sin? 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.34 Yes, God told Him that sin was at the gate 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.71 when he was deliberating whether to kill his brother. 00:06:56.74\00:06:59.71 Did the race before the flood sin? 00:07:00.08\00:07:03.56 The Bible says that the wickedness of man was great 00:07:03.69\00:07:06.51 and every intent of their hearts, of the thought of their 00:07:06.55\00:07:09.48 hearts, was only evil continually. 00:07:09.51\00:07:12.15 Did Sodom and Gomorrah sin? 00:07:12.48\00:07:14.68 Absolutely. 00:07:15.03\00:07:16.40 Genesis chapter 13 verse 13 and Genesis 18 verse 20 says 00:07:16.43\00:07:20.84 that Sodom and Gomorrah were great sinners before the Lord. 00:07:20.87\00:07:24.22 Were the Amorites sinners before the law was given on Mt. Sinai? 00:07:24.72\00:07:28.92 Absolutely. 00:07:28.95\00:07:30.32 Genesis 15 verse 16 says, "The cup of the iniquity of the 00:07:30.35\00:07:34.50 Amorites is not yet full." 00:07:34.53\00:07:37.08 Did Joseph know that adultery was wrong? 00:07:37.38\00:07:40.11 He most certainly did. 00:07:40.50\00:07:41.87 Genesis chapter 39 and verse 9, Joseph says, 00:07:41.90\00:07:46.37 "How can I do this and commit this great sin against God?" 00:07:46.40\00:07:51.68 Did Abraham know that lying was wrong? 00:07:51.71\00:07:54.70 He most certainly did. 00:07:54.73\00:07:56.46 And he lied twice. 00:07:56.49\00:07:57.86 Once in Egypt and also he lied to Abimelech. 00:07:57.89\00:08:00.63 And also we even find that the Sabbath existed 00:08:00.91\00:08:04.22 before Mt. Sinai. 00:08:04.25\00:08:05.69 Because in Exodus 16, God rained manna from heaven. 00:08:05.72\00:08:09.10 And this is before the Ten Commandments were given. 00:08:09.13\00:08:11.67 So the question is, did the Ten Commandments exist 00:08:11.70\00:08:15.27 between Genesis 4 and Exodus 19? 00:08:15.30\00:08:18.57 Absolutely, because there was sin. 00:08:18.60\00:08:20.91 And sin is what? 00:08:20.94\00:08:22.65 Sin is transgression of the law. 00:08:22.68\00:08:25.85 But now let me ask you, did the ceremonial law 00:08:26.31\00:08:29.60 exist between Genesis chapter 4 and Exodus chapter 19? 00:08:29.63\00:08:34.52 Absolutely. 00:08:34.72\00:08:36.09 Let me just mention first of all that in Genesis chapter 4 00:08:36.16\00:08:39.69 you have the story of Cain and Abel. 00:08:39.72\00:08:41.65 Did God ask Cain and Abel to offer a sacrifice, yes or no? 00:08:42.23\00:08:46.11 Absolutely. 00:08:46.14\00:08:47.51 Notice Genesis chapter 4 and let's read verses 3 through 5. 00:08:47.54\00:08:52.54 Did Abel offer a sacrifice in obedience to God? 00:09:14.85\00:09:19.98 He most certainly did. 00:09:20.01\00:09:21.38 Did the ceremonial law exist after Genesis chapter 3? 00:09:21.41\00:09:25.51 Most certainly. 00:09:25.54\00:09:26.91 Did Noah offer a sacrifice when he came out of the ark? 00:09:27.02\00:09:31.33 Yes, you can read it in Genesis chapter 8 and verses 20 and 21. 00:09:31.77\00:09:36.58 Did Abraham offer sacrifices to the Lord 00:09:36.98\00:09:40.44 and raise up altars to the Lord? 00:09:40.47\00:09:42.90 He most certainly did. 00:09:42.93\00:09:44.43 And we studied the story of the sacrifice of Isaac that 00:09:44.46\00:09:48.07 pointed forward to the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. 00:09:48.10\00:09:52.03 In fact, Jesus once said, "Abraham saw My day 00:09:52.27\00:09:56.30 and he rejoiced." 00:09:56.33\00:09:57.83 John chapter 8 and verse 56. 00:09:57.86\00:10:00.67 We also are told in Genesis that Isaac offered sacrifices 00:10:01.07\00:10:06.14 and Jacob also offered sacrifices. 00:10:06.17\00:10:09.37 So the ceremonial system of offerings and sacrifices 00:10:09.40\00:10:14.36 existed between Genesis chapter 4 and Exodus chapter 19 00:10:14.39\00:10:20.09 before the Ten Commandments. 00:10:20.12\00:10:22.60 So the Ten Commandments and the ceremonial law 00:10:22.63\00:10:25.49 both existed before Mt. Sinai. 00:10:25.52\00:10:29.37 God's moral law existed before sin. 00:10:29.40\00:10:32.21 The ceremonial law comes in after sin in order to deal 00:10:32.24\00:10:36.32 with the sin problem. 00:10:36.35\00:10:38.07 Now let's do a comparison of the two laws. 00:10:38.42\00:10:42.02 Let's talk, first of all, about the Ten Commandments. 00:10:42.49\00:10:46.25 The Ten Commandments are the constitution 00:10:46.45\00:10:49.31 of God's government. 00:10:49.34\00:10:50.71 The Ten Commandments are actually a reflection of 00:10:50.94\00:10:53.96 God's character. 00:10:53.99\00:10:55.36 They tell us what God is like in His person. 00:10:55.63\00:11:00.01 And therefore, you cannot change the Ten Commandments. 00:11:00.26\00:11:03.19 You can't change the Ten Commandments 00:11:03.22\00:11:05.07 anymore than you can change God's character. 00:11:05.10\00:11:08.52 The purpose of the Ten Commandments is to reveal 00:11:08.55\00:11:11.48 the distinction between good and evil, 00:11:11.51\00:11:14.29 between right and wrong. 00:11:14.32\00:11:16.14 And of course, the Ten Commandments reveal 00:11:16.34\00:11:19.13 what God is really like. 00:11:19.16\00:11:21.53 Now let's talk a little bit about the Ten Commandments. 00:11:21.98\00:11:25.23 Deuteronomy chapter 5 and verse 22 tells us that 00:11:25.26\00:11:29.82 God spoke the Ten Commandments directly 00:11:29.85\00:11:33.75 to the children of Israel. 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.79 What did I say? 00:11:36.52\00:11:37.89 God spoke the Ten Commandments directly 00:11:37.92\00:11:41.52 to the children of Israel. 00:11:41.55\00:11:43.01 Let's read it in Deuteronomy 5 and verse 22. 00:11:43.04\00:11:46.20 So to whom did God speak the Ten Commandments? 00:12:05.67\00:12:09.09 He spoke the Ten Commandments to "all your assembly," it says, 00:12:09.12\00:12:13.85 from the mountain. 00:12:13.88\00:12:15.25 God spoke the Ten Commandments to the entire encampment 00:12:15.28\00:12:19.50 of Israel. 00:12:19.53\00:12:20.90 Another interesting detail about the Ten Commandments is that 00:12:20.93\00:12:23.80 God wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger. 00:12:23.83\00:12:27.50 Notice Exodus chapter 31 and verse 18. 00:12:28.10\00:12:31.33 Exodus 31 and verse 18. 00:12:31.36\00:12:34.58 It says... 00:12:34.61\00:12:35.98 Everything else in the Bible, God spoke to the prophet 00:12:52.22\00:12:55.22 and the prophet spoke it or wrote it to the people. 00:12:55.25\00:12:57.63 But when it came to the Ten Commandments, 00:12:57.83\00:12:59.89 God wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger 00:12:59.92\00:13:03.43 and He spoke them personally to the entire assembly of Israel. 00:13:03.46\00:13:08.09 Notice also that the Ten Commandments were written 00:13:08.54\00:13:11.37 on tables of stone. 00:13:11.40\00:13:13.81 Let's read Deuteronomy chapter 4 and verse 13. 00:13:14.17\00:13:17.88 Deuteronomy 4 and verse 13. 00:13:18.35\00:13:21.48 It says here... 00:13:21.74\00:13:23.11 Where did God write with His own finger the Ten Commandments 00:13:37.58\00:13:40.55 that He spoke directly to the children of Israel? 00:13:40.58\00:13:43.11 He wrote them on tablets of stone. 00:13:43.14\00:13:47.03 Now another interesting detail is where the Ten Commandments 00:13:47.31\00:13:50.90 were placed in the Sanctuary. 00:13:50.93\00:13:52.87 Deuteronomy chapter 10 verses 1 through 5 00:13:53.21\00:13:56.04 tell us that the Ten Commandments were placed 00:13:56.34\00:13:58.35 inside the ark of the covenant. 00:13:58.38\00:14:00.42 Let's read that passage. 00:14:00.70\00:14:02.27 Deuteronomy chapter 10 and verses 1 through 5. 00:14:02.30\00:14:05.85 It says here... 00:14:06.05\00:14:07.42 He's speaking to Moses. 00:14:09.86\00:14:11.23 Because Moses broke the first tables. 00:14:14.99\00:14:17.29 So God spoke them what? 00:15:24.03\00:15:25.92 Directly to the people. 00:15:25.95\00:15:27.40 Secondly, He wrote them with His own finger. 00:15:27.61\00:15:30.87 Third, He wrote them on tablets of what? 00:15:30.90\00:15:33.99 Of stone. 00:15:34.02\00:15:35.39 Four, He placed them where? 00:15:35.42\00:15:37.09 Inside the ark of the covenant. 00:15:37.12\00:15:39.18 And a fifth characteristic is that the Ten Commandments 00:15:39.57\00:15:42.58 are not burdensome. 00:15:42.61\00:15:44.74 In other words, the Ten Commandments 00:15:45.59\00:15:46.96 are not a yoke of bondage, like many Christians teach. 00:15:46.99\00:15:51.12 In fact, notice 1 John chapter 5 and verse 3. 00:15:51.42\00:15:55.21 1 John chapter 5 and verse 3. 00:15:55.24\00:15:58.37 Here, the beloved disciple, John, says... 00:15:59.04\00:16:02.73 "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. 00:16:02.76\00:16:07.84 And His commandments are not..." What? 00:16:07.87\00:16:11.04 They are not burdensome. 00:16:11.07\00:16:13.33 They are not a heavy burden. 00:16:13.36\00:16:15.15 By the way, David loved God's law. 00:16:15.60\00:16:19.44 He did not see the law as being a heavy yoke of bondage. 00:16:19.47\00:16:24.44 Notice Psalm 119, we're going to read now verse 72, 00:16:24.68\00:16:29.01 and then verse 131, and finally verse 174. 00:16:29.04\00:16:33.23 And I'm going to read them in sequence. 00:16:33.26\00:16:35.02 Notice... 00:16:35.05\00:16:36.42 Does that sound like the law was a yoke of bondage to David? 00:16:59.72\00:17:03.70 Absolutely not. 00:17:03.90\00:17:05.27 He said, "I love Your law." 00:17:05.30\00:17:07.04 How could a Christian say that the law is a yoke of bondage 00:17:07.07\00:17:12.55 when the law distinguishes right from wrong 00:17:12.75\00:17:16.58 and good from evil? 00:17:16.61\00:17:18.29 Now let's talk a little bit about the ceremonial law. 00:17:18.62\00:17:22.05 The ceremonial law was actually written by Moses. 00:17:22.35\00:17:27.95 It was not written by God. 00:17:27.98\00:17:29.63 Notice Deuteronomy chapter 31 and verse 9. 00:17:29.66\00:17:33.01 Deuteronomy 31 verse 9. 00:17:33.04\00:17:35.30 It says here... 00:17:35.54\00:17:36.91 So who wrote the ceremonial law? 00:17:50.25\00:17:52.40 The Bible says Moses wrote this law. 00:17:52.79\00:17:56.83 But not only this, Moses also spoke this law 00:17:57.11\00:18:01.76 to the religious leaders and to the people. 00:18:01.79\00:18:04.24 Who spoke the Ten Commandments? 00:18:04.55\00:18:06.69 God spoke the Ten Commandments to all of the congregation. 00:18:07.28\00:18:10.77 Now notice what it says in Leviticus chapter 1 00:18:10.98\00:18:14.47 and verses 1 and 2. 00:18:14.50\00:18:16.12 Leviticus 1 verses 1 and 2. 00:18:16.15\00:18:18.08 To whom did God speak when He gave the Ten Commandments? 00:18:23.75\00:18:26.13 To all of the encampment of Israel. 00:18:26.45\00:18:28.63 To whom does God speak when He gives the ceremonial law? 00:18:28.66\00:18:31.43 To Moses. It says... 00:18:31.46\00:18:33.30 See, God uses an intermediary to speak to the people. 00:18:41.24\00:18:44.95 And then the next several chapters describe the different 00:18:55.70\00:18:58.70 offerings and sacrifices that were made in the Sanctuary 00:18:58.73\00:19:03.20 or in the temple. 00:19:03.23\00:19:04.60 Also I want you to notice that the ceremonial law 00:19:05.37\00:19:08.50 was actually written in a book. 00:19:08.53\00:19:11.57 And it was placed beside the ark of the covenant, 00:19:12.57\00:19:16.64 not inside the ark of the covenant. 00:19:16.67\00:19:18.86 Notice Deuteronomy chapter 31 and verses 24 through 26. 00:19:19.13\00:19:23.58 Deuteronomy 31 verses 24 through 26. 00:19:23.61\00:19:27.90 It says here... 00:19:27.93\00:19:29.30 Who wrote this law? Moses. 00:19:38.02\00:19:40.07 Where did he write it? 00:19:40.10\00:19:41.47 In a book. 00:19:41.50\00:19:42.87 So it says... 00:19:43.98\00:19:45.35 Where was the ceremonial law placed? 00:20:07.03\00:20:09.53 It was put beside the ark. 00:20:09.56\00:20:11.78 Where were the Ten Commandments put? 00:20:11.81\00:20:13.70 They were put inside the ark. 00:20:13.73\00:20:15.63 Is there a clear distinction between God's moral law 00:20:15.66\00:20:20.03 and God's ceremonial law? 00:20:20.06\00:20:22.01 Absolutely clear, according to Scripture. 00:20:22.04\00:20:25.46 Now let's talk a little bit about the law, sin, 00:20:25.77\00:20:29.52 death, and substitution. 00:20:29.55\00:20:32.11 The first thing that I want us to notice is that the 00:20:32.63\00:20:35.86 purpose of the law is to point out sin. 00:20:35.89\00:20:38.40 Notice Romans chapter 3 and verse 20. 00:20:39.02\00:20:42.23 Romans chapter 3 and verse 20. 00:20:42.26\00:20:45.10 How do you know that an act is sinful? 00:20:56.11\00:20:59.02 Because the law of God tells you that it is sinful. 00:20:59.32\00:21:02.54 For example, how do you know that it's wrong 00:21:02.57\00:21:04.54 for you to have sexual relations with your neighbor's wife? 00:21:04.57\00:21:07.72 Because there's a commandment that says, "You shall not..." 00:21:07.92\00:21:10.28 What? "...commit adultery." 00:21:10.31\00:21:12.05 How do you know that lying is wrong? 00:21:12.28\00:21:14.53 Because there's a commandment that says, 00:21:14.83\00:21:16.41 "Thou shalt not bear..." What? 00:21:16.44\00:21:18.11 "...false witness." 00:21:18.14\00:21:19.51 In other words, the purpose of the law, the Ten Commandments, 00:21:19.54\00:21:21.83 is to point out sin. 00:21:21.86\00:21:24.54 And the question is, what is sin? 00:21:24.57\00:21:26.81 The Bible defines what sin is. 00:21:27.65\00:21:30.12 In 1 John chapter 3 and verse 4, it says... 00:21:30.32\00:21:33.26 Or as the King James Version has it, "Sin is..." What? 00:21:41.60\00:21:45.84 "...the transgression of the law." 00:21:45.87\00:21:48.41 So the law points out sin. 00:21:48.61\00:21:51.09 And sin is the transgression of God's moral law. 00:21:51.12\00:21:55.05 And what is the consequence of sin, according to Scripture? 00:21:55.08\00:21:59.13 Notice Romans chapter 6 and verse 23. 00:21:59.44\00:22:02.79 The first part of the verse says... 00:22:03.22\00:22:05.39 So notice, the law points out sin. 00:22:09.60\00:22:12.30 Sin is transgression of the law. 00:22:12.33\00:22:14.79 And transgression of the law leads to what? 00:22:14.82\00:22:17.87 To death. 00:22:17.90\00:22:19.27 How many of us have sinned? 00:22:19.30\00:22:20.67 You know, if anybody here said that you haven't sinned, 00:22:21.41\00:22:25.30 that would be your first sin. 00:22:25.60\00:22:27.41 Because you're lying. 00:22:27.44\00:22:28.98 The Bible says in Romans chapter 3 and verse 10... 00:22:29.40\00:22:33.08 And Romans 3 verse 23 says... 00:22:40.01\00:22:42.27 So have we all transgressed God's law? 00:22:46.34\00:22:48.90 Absolutely. 00:22:49.09\00:22:50.46 And therefore, all of us deserve what? 00:22:50.49\00:22:53.03 Deserve death. 00:22:53.06\00:22:54.43 Now the question is, must we all die? 00:22:54.64\00:22:58.21 Absolutely not. 00:22:58.65\00:23:00.03 Why? 00:23:00.63\00:23:02.00 Because what the law demands, Jesus provides. 00:23:02.03\00:23:05.45 And the penalty which the law of God demands, 00:23:05.92\00:23:09.07 Jesus paid. 00:23:09.10\00:23:10.51 So if I receive Jesus as my Savior in repentance 00:23:10.85\00:23:14.78 and in confession and I trust in Him, then His death 00:23:14.81\00:23:19.36 saves me from the penalty of death. 00:23:19.39\00:23:23.26 Notice 2 Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 21. 00:23:23.83\00:23:27.41 Here is the remedy for sin. 00:23:27.44\00:23:30.54 The ceremonial law has to do with the remedy for sin. 00:23:31.02\00:23:35.16 It comes in after sin because sin put us all on death row. 00:23:35.19\00:23:39.96 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21 says... 00:23:39.99\00:23:42.82 "For He," that is God the Father, 00:23:42.85\00:23:45.18 "made Him," that is Jesus. 00:23:46.21\00:23:48.87 See, Jesus knew no sin. 00:23:50.98\00:23:52.63 In other words, God took our sins and placed them on who? 00:23:59.85\00:24:04.61 On Jesus. 00:24:04.81\00:24:06.18 Now notice the last part of the verse. 00:24:06.21\00:24:07.94 He took our unrighteousness so that we could have 00:24:13.69\00:24:17.38 His perfect righteousness. 00:24:17.41\00:24:20.15 That's what the ceremonial law pointed to. 00:24:20.42\00:24:23.94 Now we need to ask a very important question. 00:24:24.46\00:24:27.28 What is it that saves human beings from the 00:24:27.68\00:24:30.83 sentence of death? 00:24:30.86\00:24:32.28 It is what? 00:24:32.94\00:24:34.68 The life of Jesus and His death on the cross, right? 00:24:35.56\00:24:39.94 But now here comes a very important question. 00:24:40.43\00:24:42.92 How were Old Testament saints saved before Jesus Christ came? 00:24:43.34\00:24:51.99 Has anybody ever asked that question? 00:24:54.80\00:24:56.99 How were people in the Old Testament saved 00:24:57.02\00:25:00.51 when Jesus had not yet come to pay the debt of sin 00:25:00.54\00:25:05.68 by His death on the cross? 00:25:05.71\00:25:07.53 Well, let's use a hypothetical situation. 00:25:07.56\00:25:11.18 Let's suppose that someone in the encampment of Israel 00:25:11.66\00:25:15.22 decided to steal his neighbor's sandals. 00:25:16.12\00:25:21.10 Is that a violation of the moral law? 00:25:21.30\00:25:23.69 Yes, the moral law says, "Thou shalt not..." 00:25:24.11\00:25:26.87 What? "...steal." 00:25:26.90\00:25:28.47 And if you steal, the wages of stealing is what? 00:25:28.50\00:25:32.32 The wages of stealing, or violating the moral law, 00:25:32.61\00:25:35.92 is death. 00:25:35.95\00:25:37.32 And so that person, by stealing these sandals of his neighbor, 00:25:37.35\00:25:41.73 had placed himself on death row. 00:25:42.05\00:25:44.74 Of course the question is, is there any way that sinner 00:25:45.38\00:25:49.23 could escape the death sentence and still live 00:25:49.26\00:25:53.66 in spite of his sin? 00:25:53.69\00:25:55.39 The answer is absolutely yes. 00:25:55.77\00:25:58.49 If you read Leviticus chapter 1... 00:25:58.97\00:26:00.82 And we're not going to go there. 00:26:00.85\00:26:02.22 You can read it at your leisure. 00:26:02.25\00:26:04.07 Leviticus chapter 1 and verses 1 through 4. 00:26:04.10\00:26:06.84 And actually, the first seven chapters have 00:26:06.87\00:26:09.40 different types of sacrifices. 00:26:09.43\00:26:11.32 You'll find that the sinner could bring an immaculate 00:26:11.62\00:26:15.49 spotless lamb to the Sanctuary. 00:26:15.52\00:26:18.93 And he could place his hand on the head of that lamb 00:26:19.13\00:26:24.89 and confess his sin on the head of the lamb, 00:26:25.09\00:26:28.79 that sin of stealing his neighbor's sandals. 00:26:28.82\00:26:33.45 In other words, by confessing his sin on the head... 00:26:33.52\00:26:36.90 And notice it's the head. Very, very important. 00:26:36.93\00:26:39.51 Where did Jesus bear our sins? 00:26:39.54\00:26:41.78 He bore our sins on His conscience, 00:26:41.81\00:26:45.18 which has to do with His mind, with His brain. 00:26:45.21\00:26:48.36 And so the sin was actually being transferred 00:26:48.78\00:26:51.87 from the sinner to the perfect victim. 00:26:51.90\00:26:55.20 And then after the sin was transferred to the victim, 00:26:55.42\00:26:58.53 the sinner himself had to take the knife 00:26:58.83\00:27:01.36 and he had to slay that animal. 00:27:01.39\00:27:04.33 In other words, the animal was suffering death 00:27:04.36\00:27:07.85 in place of whom? 00:27:07.88\00:27:09.66 In place of the sinner. 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.84 In other words, the animal was punished so that the sinner 00:27:12.30\00:27:17.45 would not have to be punished. 00:27:17.48\00:27:19.68 Now it's interesting to notice that this ritual actually 00:27:20.08\00:27:24.39 did not legally take care of the problem of sin. 00:27:24.42\00:27:29.51 The moral law pointed out sin and its penalty. 00:27:29.96\00:27:34.49 And the ceremonial law provided the remedy for the problem. 00:27:34.69\00:27:39.56 But the Old Testament system legally did not actually 00:27:39.59\00:27:44.28 remove sin. 00:27:44.31\00:27:46.56 And you say, "How is that?" 00:27:46.87\00:27:48.63 Let's read Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 4. 00:27:48.93\00:27:52.50 Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 4. 00:27:52.53\00:27:55.38 Here, the apostle Paul is categorical when he says... 00:27:55.77\00:28:00.40 So did these sacrifices actually legally take away sin? 00:28:10.96\00:28:15.81 Absolutely not. 00:28:16.12\00:28:17.49 Because sin cannot be removed by animals dying. 00:28:17.52\00:28:21.67 The Creator Himself had to come and give His life 00:28:21.87\00:28:26.15 in place of His creatures. 00:28:26.18\00:28:28.74 You say, what was the purpose of this whole 00:28:29.09\00:28:31.59 system of sacrifices then? 00:28:31.62\00:28:33.78 Let me put it this way. 00:28:34.11\00:28:35.48 The entire Old Testament system was actually a system of IOU's. 00:28:35.73\00:28:41.80 When the sinner came to the Sanctuary, confessed his sin 00:28:42.80\00:28:47.22 on the head of the animal, and then slew the animal, 00:28:47.25\00:28:51.18 at that moment Jesus said, "This sinner came in penitence to Me. 00:28:51.39\00:28:57.90 I will pay." 00:28:57.93\00:29:01.04 In other words, the sentence of the sinner was commuted 00:29:01.43\00:29:04.49 because Jesus Christ had promised that in the future 00:29:04.52\00:29:08.51 He was going to what? 00:29:08.54\00:29:09.91 He was going to come to pay for that sin. 00:29:09.94\00:29:12.88 In other words, the sinner in the Old Testament 00:29:13.08\00:29:15.40 saw in the sacrifice a symbol of Christ and was still saved 00:29:15.43\00:29:19.87 by the Christ who was to come. 00:29:19.90\00:29:22.33 But sin was not legally taken care of 00:29:22.36\00:29:25.18 until Jesus died on the cross. 00:29:25.21\00:29:27.66 In other words, what happened was that the sentence 00:29:27.86\00:29:31.38 was postponed or deferred on the basis of the promise 00:29:31.41\00:29:36.51 that Jesus made that He was going to come to pay 00:29:36.54\00:29:40.27 all of those IOU's of the Old Testament system. 00:29:40.30\00:29:44.01 The Old Testament system, in other words, 00:29:44.36\00:29:47.00 was a system of debt. 00:29:47.03\00:29:50.34 It was a credit system. 00:29:50.37\00:29:52.87 Which means that the Sanctuary in the Old Testament 00:29:53.13\00:29:56.06 was filled with sin. 00:29:56.09\00:29:58.04 Because the blood of bulls and goats cannot remove sin. 00:29:58.28\00:30:03.88 Now go with me to Colossians chapter 2 and verses 13 and 14, 00:30:04.43\00:30:08.15 which is referring to this. 00:30:08.18\00:30:10.03 Colossians chapter 2 and verses 13 and 14. 00:30:10.06\00:30:13.92 It says here... 00:30:14.57\00:30:15.94 The handwriting of ordinances was what? 00:30:36.64\00:30:38.96 Against us. 00:30:39.27\00:30:41.27 What did He take out of the way? 00:30:46.61\00:30:48.22 The handwriting of requirements or ordinances. 00:30:48.25\00:30:53.08 What did He nail to the cross? 00:30:59.88\00:31:01.77 The New King James says, "the handwriting of requirements." 00:31:01.80\00:31:06.42 That is not the best translation. 00:31:06.92\00:31:09.33 You know, in recent years it's been discovered that 00:31:10.11\00:31:12.83 really the Greek word, cheirographon, which translates, 00:31:12.86\00:31:17.85 "handwriting of ordinances," actually is referring to 00:31:17.88\00:31:22.68 a bond of debt. 00:31:22.71\00:31:24.76 I'm going to read the definition that is given by one lexicon. 00:31:25.32\00:31:28.52 "The cheirographon," or the handwriting of requirements 00:31:29.00\00:31:34.45 that's mentioned here, "is a certificate of indebtedness 00:31:34.48\00:31:38.60 personally prepared and signed by the debtor." 00:31:38.63\00:31:42.29 Now let me read you some translations from other 00:31:42.73\00:31:45.76 versions of the Bible. 00:31:45.79\00:31:47.16 The New American Standard Bible says that it means 00:31:47.19\00:31:49.63 a certificate of debt. 00:31:49.66\00:31:51.66 The New Living Translation says that it refers to 00:31:52.54\00:31:55.55 a record of the charges against us. 00:31:55.58\00:31:58.36 The English Standard Version says, "cancelling the 00:31:58.72\00:32:01.55 record of our debt." 00:32:01.58\00:32:03.47 The Message translates, "that old arrest warrant cancelled." 00:32:03.77\00:32:08.73 The New Century Version translates, 00:32:09.22\00:32:11.61 "He cancelled the debt." 00:32:11.91\00:32:14.24 The New English Translation translates, 00:32:14.44\00:32:17.06 "a certificate of indebtedness." 00:32:17.09\00:32:20.40 The Revised Standard Version translates, 00:32:20.43\00:32:22.90 "having cancelled the bond that stood against us." 00:32:22.93\00:32:27.15 And the New Revised Standard version says, 00:32:27.18\00:32:29.90 "erasing the record that stood against us." 00:32:29.93\00:32:33.29 What is it that Jesus Christ nailed to the cross of Calvary? 00:32:33.32\00:32:37.08 He nailed to the cross of Calvary all of the IOU's 00:32:37.40\00:32:41.77 that had been signed by the debtors who offered these 00:32:42.17\00:32:46.50 animal sacrifices in the Old Testament system. 00:32:46.53\00:32:49.43 In other words, every time that a sinner offered a sacrifice 00:32:49.46\00:32:53.89 and saw in that sacrifice a symbol of Jesus Christ, 00:32:53.92\00:32:58.04 He was looking at the future at the coming of the Messiah 00:32:58.07\00:33:01.30 who said, "I will pay for all of those IOU's. 00:33:01.33\00:33:07.41 I will pay all of those unpaid bills that have come up." 00:33:07.44\00:33:12.39 Now when Jesus came, the debt of sin had accumulated 00:33:13.06\00:33:17.39 to an alarming rate. 00:33:17.42\00:33:18.84 And the debt had not been legally paid because 00:33:19.50\00:33:23.18 the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. 00:33:23.21\00:33:26.50 In fact, between Sinai and Calvary over one million 00:33:26.90\00:33:32.30 sacrifices were offered just in the morning 00:33:32.33\00:33:35.02 and evening sacrifice. 00:33:35.05\00:33:36.99 God simply accepted the faith of the person who brought 00:33:37.28\00:33:41.22 the animal, and confessed his sin, and killed the animal. 00:33:41.25\00:33:44.85 And Jesus said, "Someday, I will come and I will pay." 00:33:44.88\00:33:51.45 And so when Jesus came, He nailed our debt to where? 00:33:52.03\00:33:57.17 To the cross. 00:33:57.20\00:33:58.57 He didn't nail the Ten Commandments to the cross. 00:33:58.60\00:34:00.66 He nailed our bond of debt to the cross. 00:34:00.69\00:34:04.54 He took care of it once and for all legally, 00:34:04.57\00:34:07.96 because now He offered His own precious blood. 00:34:07.99\00:34:11.35 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:34:11.38\00:34:12.89 Now let's go to Colossians chapter 2 and verse 15. 00:34:13.18\00:34:15.79 As a result of what Jesus did on the cross, 00:34:16.53\00:34:19.81 He now can brag a little bit. 00:34:20.16\00:34:22.72 And He can actually expose Satan and his angels, 00:34:23.76\00:34:29.09 because Satan had said, "You can't forgive sinners, 00:34:29.12\00:34:32.16 because the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin." 00:34:32.19\00:34:35.21 But when Jesus nailed our IOU's to the cross of Calvary, 00:34:35.24\00:34:39.02 now Jesus says something to the principalities and powers. 00:34:39.05\00:34:42.83 Notice Colossians chapter 2 and verse 15. 00:34:42.86\00:34:46.16 It says... 00:34:46.67\00:34:48.04 That is, in His what? 00:34:59.24\00:35:01.18 In His cross. 00:35:01.21\00:35:02.61 Let me give you a biblical example so you can 00:35:02.64\00:35:04.44 understand what this means. 00:35:04.47\00:35:05.91 In Jude 9, we have the story of the death of Moses 00:35:07.08\00:35:13.03 and something that happened after Moses died. 00:35:13.06\00:35:15.79 There are two strange things about the death of Moses. 00:35:16.27\00:35:18.70 Number one, the Bible says that God buried him. 00:35:19.18\00:35:22.80 The only person that I know of in the Bible that God buried. 00:35:23.91\00:35:26.74 And secondly, the Bible says that nobody knew 00:35:27.08\00:35:30.07 where his tomb was. 00:35:30.10\00:35:31.72 Which is very unusual because the Jews marked the tombs 00:35:32.43\00:35:35.70 of their heroes. 00:35:35.73\00:35:37.30 And then later on during the ministry of Christ, 00:35:37.83\00:35:40.40 on the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses appears talking to Jesus 00:35:40.43\00:35:45.18 Christ on the Mount. 00:35:45.21\00:35:46.76 So what must have happened after Moses died? 00:35:47.26\00:35:50.17 He must have been what? 00:35:50.55\00:35:52.10 He must have been resurrected. 00:35:52.13\00:35:54.12 In fact, notice Jude 9 where we have a reference to this event. 00:35:54.32\00:35:58.78 It says... 00:35:58.84\00:36:00.21 Oh, Michael was disputing with the devil over what? 00:36:08.12\00:36:11.69 The body of Moses. 00:36:11.72\00:36:13.09 Do you think God fights over dead bodies, over corpses? 00:36:13.12\00:36:16.42 What had Michael come to do? 00:36:16.57\00:36:18.28 He had come to do what He will do when He comes again. 00:36:18.72\00:36:21.94 The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout. 00:36:22.33\00:36:24.99 With a voice of the what? 00:36:25.02\00:36:26.51 Of the archangel and the trumpet of God. 00:36:26.54\00:36:28.97 And the dead in Christ will rise first. 00:36:29.00\00:36:31.67 And so it says... 00:36:31.95\00:36:33.32 You know, when Jesus resurrected from the dead, 00:36:39.09\00:36:41.68 He did not resurrect by Himself. 00:36:42.48\00:36:44.31 There was a multitude that resurrected with Him. 00:36:45.05\00:36:47.54 Now He could resurrect them. 00:36:47.86\00:36:49.83 Because all of their IOU's had been what? 00:36:49.86\00:36:52.83 Taken care of by Jesus Christ. 00:36:52.86\00:36:54.85 Let's read about that in Matthew 27 and verses 50 and 51. 00:36:54.88\00:36:59.54 Matthew 27:50-51 00:36:59.57\00:37:01.78 It says... 00:37:01.88\00:37:03.25 This is during the Old Testament period. 00:37:23.36\00:37:25.38 Who had fallen asleep were what? 00:37:25.41\00:37:27.87 Were raised. 00:37:27.90\00:37:29.27 They didn't come out on Friday. 00:37:29.30\00:37:31.52 They came out on resurrection day. 00:37:31.55\00:37:34.12 Because it continues saying here... 00:37:34.15\00:37:35.85 And if I had time, I would show you that the firstfruits 00:37:45.90\00:37:49.15 celebration which represents the resurrection of Christ, 00:37:49.18\00:37:52.73 that very day that Jesus resurrected, He went to the 00:37:53.03\00:37:56.06 presence of His Father and He said, "Father, I have 00:37:56.09\00:37:59.73 offered the sacrifice for sin. 00:37:59.76\00:38:02.04 Is My sacrifice accepted?" 00:38:02.24\00:38:04.47 And the Father said, "Yes." 00:38:04.50\00:38:05.87 And then Jesus took a trip back to the earth. 00:38:05.90\00:38:07.83 Forty days later, Jesus is ascending to heaven again. 00:38:08.59\00:38:11.91 But now He's not ascending by Himself. 00:38:11.94\00:38:14.54 Who's ascending with Him? 00:38:14.57\00:38:16.03 All of those that came out of the graves 00:38:16.33\00:38:18.65 that witnessed in favor of His resurrection now go to heaven. 00:38:18.68\00:38:23.73 And they are the firstfruits of the great harvest 00:38:23.76\00:38:28.38 that will come forth from the tomb when Jesus Christ returns 00:38:28.41\00:38:31.97 in power and glory. 00:38:32.00\00:38:33.93 Now let me read you this statement from Ellen White. 00:38:34.81\00:38:36.87 It's found in "Signs Of The Times," April 22, 1880. 00:38:36.90\00:38:41.02 Some people thing that people in the Old Testament 00:38:41.05\00:38:43.09 were saved by the law. 00:38:43.12\00:38:44.49 That there was no grace in the Old Testament. 00:38:44.52\00:38:46.39 Listen to what she has to say. 00:38:46.42\00:38:48.14 How were people saved in the Old Testament? 00:39:57.11\00:39:59.58 They were saved by Jesus Christ. 00:39:59.61\00:40:02.09 The sacrifices did not save them. 00:40:02.54\00:40:04.87 They pointed forward to the Savior who would 00:40:04.90\00:40:07.29 legally pay for sin. 00:40:07.32\00:40:08.88 Every time they sacrificed an animal, it was an IOU. 00:40:08.91\00:40:12.82 And Jesus said, "Don't worry, I will pay the IOU." 00:40:12.85\00:40:16.53 It was a gigantic credit system. 00:40:16.56\00:40:18.65 And when Jesus came, He took all of the IOU's, 00:40:18.99\00:40:22.35 the bond of debt, and He nailed the bond of debt to the cross. 00:40:22.38\00:40:26.27 And all of those individuals who had died in faith 00:40:26.30\00:40:29.69 were actually legally saved at that moment from their sins 00:40:30.16\00:40:35.06 because of the death of Jesus Christ. 00:40:35.09\00:40:37.20 You know, this whole system of IOU's came to an end 00:40:37.89\00:40:40.85 when Jesus died on the cross. 00:40:40.88\00:40:42.62 Let's notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verses 18 and 19. 00:40:43.01\00:40:46.52 Hebrews chapter 7 verses 18 and 19. 00:40:46.55\00:40:49.32 It says here... 00:40:50.46\00:40:51.83 The commandment is dealing with the commandment of the 00:40:57.28\00:40:59.34 priesthood, if you read the context. 00:40:59.37\00:41:01.55 And if you read the context, it's talking about 00:41:09.03\00:41:10.97 the ceremonial law. 00:41:11.00\00:41:12.37 In other words, it did not finally resolve 00:41:15.32\00:41:17.43 the issue of sin. 00:41:17.46\00:41:18.89 What is the better hope? 00:41:27.68\00:41:29.05 The hope that is brought by whom? 00:41:29.08\00:41:31.01 By Jesus Christ. 00:41:31.04\00:41:32.53 Notice also Hebrews 8 and verse 13. 00:41:32.77\00:41:35.95 Hebrews chapter 8 and verse 13. 00:41:35.98\00:41:38.90 It says here... 00:41:38.93\00:41:40.30 And if you read the context, it's talking about the 00:41:55.82\00:41:58.44 ceremonial system that was going to come to an end 00:41:58.47\00:42:02.34 when Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary. 00:42:02.37\00:42:06.55 This whole priestly system of offerings, and sacrifices, 00:42:06.90\00:42:10.94 and washings, etcetera, pointed forward to Jesus. 00:42:10.97\00:42:15.06 And when Jesus came, all of this that is called unprofitable 00:42:15.09\00:42:19.41 was nailed to the cross, was taken away. 00:42:19.81\00:42:22.38 And it was no longer necessary to celebrate the rites 00:42:22.71\00:42:26.01 and ceremonies. 00:42:26.04\00:42:27.41 Now we're ready to understand Colossians 2:16 and 17. 00:42:27.44\00:42:33.42 This text is greatly misused by Christians. 00:42:34.00\00:42:37.63 They try to use it to prove that we can eat or drink 00:42:37.66\00:42:41.02 anything we want. 00:42:41.05\00:42:42.42 They try to use it to prove that we don't have to keep 00:42:42.45\00:42:44.99 the seventh day Sabbath anymore. 00:42:45.02\00:42:47.18 But let's notice what this passage is really teaching. 00:42:47.73\00:42:50.60 Colossians chapter 2 and verse 16. 00:42:50.90\00:42:54.20 Because He's nailed all of the IOU's to the cross; 00:42:56.03\00:42:58.68 that's the context, we read chapter 2 and verse 15. 00:42:58.71\00:43:01.44 I want to read you a statement that we find in 00:43:21.53\00:43:23.35 Patriarchs And Prophets, page 365. 00:43:23.38\00:43:26.08 Notice what Ellen White has to say about 00:43:26.11\00:43:28.86 this Old Testament system and what many Christians 00:43:28.89\00:43:33.22 teach about the Old Testament system. 00:43:33.25\00:43:35.14 She says... 00:43:35.17\00:43:36.54 Now the question is, what is this, "nobody judge you 00:44:32.58\00:44:35.39 in food or in drink?" 00:44:35.42\00:44:38.18 You know, some people take that to say that you can eat 00:44:38.58\00:44:40.72 anything you want. 00:44:40.75\00:44:42.59 The fact is that food and drink here has nothing whatsoever 00:44:43.49\00:44:46.68 to do with the food that you put on your table. 00:44:46.71\00:44:49.17 You see, with the sacrifices in the Old Testament 00:44:49.71\00:44:52.30 there were food and drink offerings. 00:44:52.33\00:44:54.64 Let's read one example, and there are many. 00:44:54.67\00:44:57.10 Exodus 29 and verses 38 through 41. 00:44:57.58\00:45:01.00 Exodus 29:38-41 00:45:01.03\00:45:03.70 This is referring to foods and drinks that were 00:45:04.01\00:45:06.05 offered with the sacrifices. 00:45:06.08\00:45:07.45 It has nothing to do with the food we eat from our tables. 00:45:07.48\00:45:10.62 It says... 00:45:10.65\00:45:12.02 Flour, see there's a food offering. 00:45:25.35\00:45:27.66 Oil, that's food also. 00:45:32.20\00:45:33.57 Grain, there's a food. 00:45:48.26\00:45:49.63 So what is referred to when you have foods and drinks here? 00:45:55.87\00:45:58.94 Is it talking about, you know, whether we can eat pork or not? 00:45:58.97\00:46:02.64 Or whether we can eat lobster or not? 00:46:02.67\00:46:04.38 Or whether we can eat shrimp or not? 00:46:04.41\00:46:05.93 It has nothing to do with common ordinary food. 00:46:05.96\00:46:08.50 It has to do with the food and drink offerings that 00:46:08.53\00:46:11.63 were presented in conjunction with the sacrificial system. 00:46:11.66\00:46:15.25 Now I want you to notice Hebrews 9 where this 00:46:15.57\00:46:18.42 idea is picked up. 00:46:18.45\00:46:19.82 Hebrews 9 and verses 9 through 12. 00:46:19.85\00:46:21.91 Speaking about the Old Testament system, it says... 00:46:22.10\00:46:25.52 In other words, those sacrifices of the Old Testament 00:46:37.63\00:46:39.53 could not really give the people a consciousness, 00:46:39.56\00:46:42.70 "My sin has definitely been taken care of." 00:46:42.73\00:46:45.56 Because the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sin. 00:46:45.59\00:46:48.71 Notice verse 10. 00:46:48.91\00:46:50.28 The same expression that we found in Colossians chapter 2. 00:46:56.46\00:46:59.22 So is this talking about the food we put on our table? 00:46:59.25\00:47:01.95 No, it's talking about the law of sacrifices and offerings. 00:47:02.15\00:47:05.18 Until when did you have these foods, and drinks, 00:47:14.63\00:47:16.71 and washing, and sacrifices? 00:47:16.74\00:47:18.45 Until the time of reformation. 00:47:18.48\00:47:20.04 The question is, when is the time of reformation? 00:47:20.07\00:47:22.47 Notice the next verse. 00:47:22.50\00:47:23.87 So what did the foods and drinks have to do with? 00:47:47.58\00:47:49.95 They were related to the ceremonial law. 00:47:50.33\00:47:52.47 Notice Hebrews chapter 10 and verses 1 through 4. 00:47:53.16\00:47:55.93 The same idea comes through. 00:47:55.96\00:47:57.33 Hebrews 10 verses 1 through 4. 00:47:57.36\00:47:59.30 It says... 00:47:59.77\00:48:01.14 And the context shows us the ceremonial law. 00:48:02.30\00:48:04.66 We'll see that in a minute. 00:48:04.69\00:48:06.06 What are those good things to come? 00:48:11.11\00:48:12.90 Jesus Christ, that's right. 00:48:13.34\00:48:14.97 See, this is the law of sacrifices, right? 00:48:21.23\00:48:23.44 That's not talking about moral perfection. 00:48:30.81\00:48:33.43 It's talking about them saying, "My sin has been taken care of 00:48:33.46\00:48:37.28 once and for all." 00:48:37.31\00:48:38.68 Verse 2... 00:48:38.71\00:48:40.08 If those sacrifices took care of sin, why continue offering them 00:48:42.29\00:48:45.42 day after day, year after year? 00:48:45.45\00:48:47.31 Are you understanding what the foods and drinks are? 00:49:03.67\00:49:06.02 Now let's talk about the festivals; 00:49:06.31\00:49:07.96 nobody judge you about the festivals or the feasts. 00:49:07.99\00:49:12.42 In a book that has been published recently by 00:49:13.44\00:49:16.56 my friend, Ron du Preez, it's called, Judging the Sabbath, 00:49:16.59\00:49:20.03 he has done an interesting study of this word, "feasts," 00:49:20.58\00:49:24.74 that is used in Colossians chapter 2. 00:49:24.77\00:49:26.86 The King James Version says, "holy day." 00:49:26.89\00:49:30.07 But really, it's the word "feasts." 00:49:30.10\00:49:32.00 What he's shown in this book is that the word, "chag," 00:49:32.30\00:49:36.54 which is translated here in the Old Testament, "festival," 00:49:36.82\00:49:40.91 here it's the Greek word, "heorté," refers 00:49:40.94\00:49:44.85 not to all of the Hebrew feasts, but it refers particularly 00:49:44.88\00:49:49.35 to the feasts where people had to go to Jerusalem 00:49:49.38\00:49:52.40 to mandatorily be there for those feasts. 00:49:52.97\00:49:57.26 What were those feasts? 00:49:57.51\00:49:58.88 Passover and Unleavened Bread, Pentecost, 00:49:58.91\00:50:02.44 and the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:50:02.87\00:50:04.94 Every male twelve years and older had to go 00:50:05.31\00:50:08.52 to Jerusalem to be there for those feasts. 00:50:08.55\00:50:11.60 Interestingly enough, the word "chag" in the Old Testament, 00:50:11.63\00:50:15.13 which is translated "feasts" in the Old Testament, 00:50:15.55\00:50:18.80 and the Greek word "heorté, which is the exact equivalent 00:50:18.83\00:50:22.88 in the Greek language, refer exclusively 00:50:22.91\00:50:26.48 to these pilgrimage festivals. 00:50:26.74\00:50:29.49 They do not refer to the other feasts. 00:50:29.52\00:50:31.50 You know, because you had the Feast of Trumpets, 00:50:31.53\00:50:33.28 and you had the Day of Atonement, and you had 00:50:33.31\00:50:36.50 also the Jubilee, and you had the Sabbatical Year. 00:50:36.53\00:50:39.48 Interestingly enough, all of those other days 00:50:39.51\00:50:43.06 are called by the word, "sabbaths." 00:50:43.09\00:50:46.20 They were ceremonial sabbaths. 00:50:46.23\00:50:47.99 And so some people argue, they say, "Well Pastor Bohr, 00:50:48.26\00:50:51.39 it says, 'Nobody judge you with feasts or with sabbaths.' 00:50:51.42\00:50:54.75 You're saying that the feasts are the seven yearly feasts. 00:50:54.78\00:51:00.16 Isn't that the same as the sabbaths, 00:51:00.19\00:51:01.93 the ceremonial sabbaths?" 00:51:01.96\00:51:03.33 They're not the same. 00:51:03.36\00:51:04.73 Because the word "chag" in the Old Testament 00:51:04.76\00:51:06.91 and the word "heorté" in the New Testament 00:51:06.94\00:51:09.21 refers only to the pilgrimage festivals. 00:51:09.41\00:51:13.67 Whereas the sabbaths refer to things like 00:51:14.46\00:51:19.04 the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, 00:51:19.07\00:51:21.58 which was a day of rest, the Sabbatical Year 00:51:21.61\00:51:24.41 every seven years, and the Jubilee Year which took place 00:51:24.44\00:51:28.05 every fifty years. 00:51:28.08\00:51:30.97 And so basically what the apostle Paul is speaking about 00:51:31.52\00:51:34.55 when he says, "Let no one judge you in food or in drink," 00:51:34.58\00:51:38.07 there's the food and drinks that are offered with the sacrifices. 00:51:38.10\00:51:40.94 Let no one judge you regarding a holy day; 00:51:40.97\00:51:46.77 it's these pilgrimage feasts. 00:51:46.80\00:51:48.82 And then it continues saying, let no one judge you 00:51:48.85\00:51:52.09 concerning the new moons. 00:51:52.12\00:51:53.74 What is this issue of the new moons? 00:51:53.77\00:51:56.06 Well in the Hebrew religious year, you had seven months 00:51:56.49\00:52:02.08 of the religious year. 00:52:02.11\00:52:03.48 The first month was around our time of Easter. 00:52:03.60\00:52:07.52 Around March and April. 00:52:07.55\00:52:08.98 And the seventh month was around the month of 00:52:09.38\00:52:12.04 September or October. 00:52:12.07\00:52:13.71 And the new moon marked the beginning of each month. 00:52:13.96\00:52:18.35 Now do we have seven months today that we celebrate? 00:52:18.95\00:52:22.00 No, we don't celebrate the seven months in the 00:52:23.06\00:52:25.94 Jewish festivals, right? 00:52:25.97\00:52:27.34 Because they all pointed towards what? 00:52:27.37\00:52:29.40 They all pointed toward Jesus Christ. 00:52:29.43\00:52:32.62 So are we to celebrate the new moons that marked the beginning 00:52:32.93\00:52:36.94 of those months? 00:52:36.97\00:52:38.34 Absolutely not. 00:52:38.37\00:52:39.74 Notice numbers chapter 28 and verses 11 through 19 00:52:39.77\00:52:43.61 where you have the new moons spoken of. 00:52:43.64\00:52:46.82 It says, "At the beginning of your months..." 00:52:46.94\00:52:49.69 To be translated, new moon. 00:52:51.37\00:52:53.23 And then it goes on to speak about the month. 00:53:20.79\00:53:23.43 The word "month" here really is translated in the 00:53:23.84\00:53:27.25 King James Version, "new moons." 00:53:27.28\00:53:30.61 So the new moons were also connected with the seven months 00:53:30.64\00:53:33.93 of the Hebrew religious year which they observed, 00:53:33.96\00:53:36.77 but which we don't have to observe because they were 00:53:37.17\00:53:39.94 fulfilled in Jesus Christ. 00:53:39.97\00:53:42.45 Now what about the sabbaths that are mentioned here 00:53:42.85\00:53:45.56 in Colossians chapter 2? 00:53:45.59\00:53:47.22 Is this talking about the seventh day Sabbath? 00:53:47.65\00:53:49.61 Nobody can judge me if I don't keep the Sabbath? 00:53:49.64\00:53:52.32 Of course not. 00:53:52.35\00:53:53.72 You see, it says in Colossians chapter 2 that these things were 00:53:54.07\00:53:58.86 shadows of things to come. 00:53:58.89\00:54:01.00 Is the Sabbath a shadow of things to come? 00:54:01.99\00:54:04.70 Is the seventh day Sabbath a shadow of things to come? 00:54:05.14\00:54:07.80 Absolutely not. 00:54:08.27\00:54:09.64 The Sabbath was made before sin. 00:54:09.70\00:54:13.42 And the Sabbath does not point forward. 00:54:14.37\00:54:17.15 The Sabbath points what? Backwards. 00:54:17.18\00:54:20.10 It's a memorial of creation. 00:54:20.13\00:54:23.03 And so these sabbaths cannot be the seventh day Sabbath. 00:54:23.51\00:54:28.05 Because the seventh day Sabbath were not shadows 00:54:28.08\00:54:30.63 of anything to come. 00:54:30.66\00:54:32.03 They pointed backward to what God did at the time of creation. 00:54:32.06\00:54:39.15 Now let's cover one final thing before we bring this to an end. 00:54:40.11\00:54:43.45 Leviticus chapter 23 makes a clear distinction between 00:54:44.74\00:54:48.60 the ceremonial sabbaths and the seventh day Sabbath. 00:54:49.80\00:54:53.36 Notice Leviticus chapter 23 and verse 3. 00:54:53.70\00:54:56.50 After verse 2 God has said, "These are My feasts 00:54:56.78\00:55:00.93 that you shall celebrate." 00:55:00.96\00:55:02.33 And then there are seven of them mentioned. 00:55:02.36\00:55:04.38 Notice that He places the Sabbath, 00:55:04.68\00:55:06.89 the seventh day Sabbath, apart. 00:55:06.92\00:55:08.64 It says here... 00:55:08.94\00:55:10.31 And then after mentioning the seven celebrations 00:55:26.02\00:55:29.51 in chapter 23 of Leviticus, we find at the end of the chapter 00:55:29.54\00:55:34.01 in verses 37 and 38, I want you to notice 00:55:34.04\00:55:36.62 there's a distinction between the ceremonial sabbaths 00:55:36.65\00:55:39.27 and the seventh day Sabbath. 00:55:39.30\00:55:40.93 It says there in verse 37... 00:55:40.96\00:55:42.71 And now notice verse 38. 00:55:59.39\00:56:01.25 So are all of these celebrations besides the Sabbath of the Lord? 00:56:16.62\00:56:20.95 Absolutely. 00:56:21.16\00:56:22.53 The Sabbath of the Lord stands apart. 00:56:22.56\00:56:25.47 It is actually a memorial of creation. 00:56:25.50\00:56:28.71 And so Colossians chapter 2 verse 17 ends by saying, 00:56:29.02\00:56:32.16 all of these things were shadows of things to come. 00:56:32.33\00:56:35.68 But the body or the substance is of whom? 00:56:36.01\00:56:40.77 Of Christ. 00:56:40.80\00:56:42.17 So basically, this is the idea. 00:56:42.20\00:56:44.59 Jesus was standing here and He was projecting a shadow 00:56:45.04\00:56:49.83 into the Old Testament period. 00:56:50.13\00:56:52.17 And as people looked at the shadow, 00:56:52.37\00:56:55.17 where was their attention directed to? 00:56:55.64\00:56:57.84 As they looked at the shadow... 00:56:57.87\00:56:59.26 When you see a shadow, what do you do? 00:56:59.29\00:57:00.73 You want to see what the reality is that projects the shadow. 00:57:00.76\00:57:03.30 So in all of these ceremonies, the Jews looked at these 00:57:03.33\00:57:07.11 shadowy celebrations and offerings and sacrifices, 00:57:07.14\00:57:11.10 and that was to lead them to look at what? 00:57:11.31\00:57:14.25 At the reality or the body that was projecting that shadow. 00:57:14.28\00:57:18.55 In other words, the whole system was centered 00:57:18.58\00:57:22.10 in Jesus Christ. 00:57:22.13\00:57:24.54 They were not saved by the law. 00:57:24.57\00:57:26.37 They were saved by grace just like we are today. 00:57:26.40\00:57:29.71
