Let's seek the Lord in prayer. 00:00:30.46\00:00:32.29 Our Father and our God, 00:00:33.69\00:00:35.42 what a privilege it is to call You our Father; 00:00:36.35\00:00:39.75 our Father which art in heaven. 00:00:40.49\00:00:42.30 The image that comes to our mind when we mention the word 00:00:43.53\00:00:46.54 "Father" is someone who loves us, who's willing to give 00:00:46.57\00:00:50.79 everything to save us from our sins. 00:00:50.82\00:00:53.86 And Father, as we open Your Word this evening, 00:00:54.40\00:00:57.55 we ask, we implore, for the presence of Your Holy Spirit. 00:00:57.58\00:01:02.28 Give us understanding, not only understanding 00:01:02.81\00:01:06.03 intellectually, but give us understanding in our hearts 00:01:06.06\00:01:09.39 that we might truly and fully receive Jesus 00:01:09.76\00:01:13.57 personally as our Savior and Lord. 00:01:14.04\00:01:16.80 We thank You, Father, for the privilege of prayer 00:01:17.25\00:01:19.94 and thank You for inclining your ear to hear us. 00:01:19.97\00:01:23.39 Because we ask it in the precious name of Jesus, amen. 00:01:23.42\00:01:27.96 I'd like to begin by saying that there is a very, very close 00:01:30.56\00:01:35.51 connection between what happened on the cross of Calvary 00:01:35.54\00:01:41.17 and what happened on the day of Pentecost 00:01:42.28\00:01:45.72 several weeks later. 00:01:47.69\00:01:49.36 You say, now what possible connection could there be 00:01:50.11\00:01:53.95 between the cross of Christ and what happened on the 00:01:54.25\00:01:58.80 day of Pentecost? 00:01:58.83\00:02:00.78 The fact is that most Christians, when they 00:02:01.33\00:02:04.34 read the story of Acts chapter 2, which is 00:02:04.37\00:02:07.57 taking place, by the way, 40 days after the 00:02:07.60\00:02:10.45 resurrection of Christ, they focused almost exclusively 00:02:10.48\00:02:15.42 on what happened on earth on the day of Pentecost. 00:02:15.45\00:02:18.86 Tongues of fire were seen, and there was a mighty rushing wind, 00:02:19.06\00:02:22.60 and people were filled with the Spirit, and they spoke 00:02:22.63\00:02:25.30 in other tongues, you know. 00:02:25.33\00:02:26.91 Most of the emphasis is upon what happened 00:02:26.94\00:02:30.40 in the upper room on earth. 00:02:30.43\00:02:31.96 But tonight I want to share with you that really 00:02:32.63\00:02:35.61 the important event on the day of Pentecost 00:02:35.64\00:02:38.64 did not take place on earth at all. 00:02:38.67\00:02:40.97 The important event on the day of Pentecost 00:02:41.59\00:02:44.29 took place in heaven. 00:02:44.32\00:02:45.69 And that event in heaven had an indissoluble connection 00:02:46.23\00:02:52.58 with what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary. 00:02:52.61\00:02:56.73 Now I want to go through several stories, 00:02:57.35\00:03:00.15 primarily from the Old Testament, 00:03:00.18\00:03:02.07 that show us that you have, first of all, a sacrifice 00:03:02.37\00:03:06.54 or an offering, and then after the offering 00:03:06.57\00:03:10.21 you have fire from heaven where God shows His 00:03:10.24\00:03:13.92 approval of that offering. 00:03:13.95\00:03:16.09 Remember, that's the sequence. 00:03:16.46\00:03:18.49 Sacrifice or offering, fire from heaven to show that 00:03:18.52\00:03:22.43 God approved of that sacrifice or that offering. 00:03:22.46\00:03:26.20 The first story that I would like to deal with 00:03:26.91\00:03:29.10 is the story of the sacrifice that was made by Abel. 00:03:29.13\00:03:33.24 Now the Bible doesn't tell us exactly how the sacrifice 00:03:33.58\00:03:40.22 that Abel offered was consumed. 00:03:40.25\00:03:43.11 But in the light of everything that we're going to 00:03:43.47\00:03:45.56 study tonight, there can be no doubt that the way in which 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.51 God showed that He accepted Abel's sacrifice 00:03:48.54\00:03:51.67 was because fire fell from heaven as a result 00:03:51.70\00:03:56.07 of him offering that sacrifice. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.45 I want to read a statement that we find, a very important 00:03:59.03\00:04:02.72 statement, that we find in "Signs Of The Times," 00:04:02.75\00:04:06.19 February 6, 1879. 00:04:06.22\00:04:08.62 Here, Ellen White writes about how God showed His approval. 00:04:08.65\00:04:12.59 You know, interestingly, several years ago I did some research, 00:04:12.62\00:04:16.07 quite a bit of research, into the book of Genesis. 00:04:16.47\00:04:18.55 And as I read the commentaries, most of the commentators 00:04:18.58\00:04:21.58 said that the way that God showed that He approved 00:04:21.61\00:04:24.92 of Abel's sacrifice was that the smoke of the sacrifice went up. 00:04:24.95\00:04:29.78 The way that God showed that He disapproved of Cain's sacrifice 00:04:30.08\00:04:33.36 was that the smoke went down. 00:04:33.39\00:04:35.29 Now that's an interesting speculation, 00:04:35.32\00:04:36.97 but it totally goes against everything that the 00:04:37.00\00:04:39.03 Bible has to say about how God approves of sacrifice. 00:04:39.06\00:04:42.79 Now Ellen White is not adding here to the Bible. 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.21 She's simply stating what is found in the rest of Scripture. 00:04:45.24\00:04:48.71 Notice what she says. 00:04:48.91\00:04:50.43 "God had respect..." 00:04:50.73\00:04:53.07 That means that He approved. 00:04:53.10\00:04:55.30 How did God show His approval of Abel's sacrifice? 00:05:04.01\00:05:07.24 By raining what? 00:05:07.27\00:05:08.64 Fire from heaven. 00:05:08.67\00:05:10.04 Now let's go to the tabernacle in the wilderness. 00:05:10.43\00:05:13.15 When the tabernacle was inaugurated, 00:05:13.18\00:05:15.82 how did God show that He accepted the sacrifices? 00:05:15.85\00:05:19.03 Let's read Leviticus chapter 9 and verses 22 through 24. 00:05:19.06\00:05:24.11 Leviticus chapter 9 and verses 22 through 24. 00:05:24.14\00:05:28.29 It says here... 00:05:28.91\00:05:30.28 And how did God show His approval of the sacrifices? 00:05:54.65\00:05:57.52 Now let's talk about the time when David offered a sacrifice 00:06:12.42\00:06:18.63 on Ornan's threshing floor. 00:06:18.66\00:06:21.29 This is when the ark was brought. 00:06:21.32\00:06:23.62 Notice 1 Chronicles chapter 21 and verse 26. 00:06:23.65\00:06:27.08 Again, the same idea. 00:06:27.11\00:06:28.48 The sacrifice is accepted by God by God raining fire from heaven. 00:06:28.51\00:06:32.42 Notice 1 Chronicles 21 and verse 26. 00:06:32.85\00:06:36.61 One again, the sacrifice and then the fire 00:06:54.81\00:06:57.64 showing God's approval. 00:06:57.67\00:06:59.49 Now let's talk about the inauguration of the temple 00:06:59.70\00:07:02.95 that was built by Solomon. 00:07:02.98\00:07:04.35 2 Chronicles chapter 7 and verse 1. 00:07:04.54\00:07:08.04 It says there... 00:07:08.74\00:07:10.11 How did God show that He accepted the sacrifices, 00:07:24.72\00:07:27.78 that He approved of them? 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.21 Fire came down from heaven and consumed them. 00:07:29.24\00:07:32.41 Now let's talk about the period of the prophets. 00:07:32.87\00:07:35.58 Go with me to 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 38. 00:07:35.61\00:07:39.14 How did God show that He approved of Elijah's sacrifice 00:07:39.17\00:07:44.24 that Elijah placed upon the altar? 00:07:44.27\00:07:46.07 Notice 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 38. 00:07:46.39\00:07:51.13 So how did God show that He accepted the sacrifices 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.84 that were placed on the altar? 00:08:18.87\00:08:20.43 By raining what? 00:08:20.46\00:08:22.26 By raining down fire from heaven to consume the sacrifices. 00:08:22.29\00:08:27.65 Now there's another illustration in Scripture. 00:08:28.15\00:08:30.97 It doesn't have to do with fire, but it shows how God 00:08:31.00\00:08:34.89 revealed His approval as to the sacrifice that was offered. 00:08:35.19\00:08:40.58 Now in the Old Testament, we have two rock episodes. 00:08:40.83\00:08:45.74 And I'm going to go through this quickly because we 00:08:45.77\00:08:48.22 don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this. 00:08:48.25\00:08:50.22 But I want you to get the picture. 00:08:50.25\00:08:51.70 The first rock episode is in Exodus chapter 17 00:08:52.17\00:08:55.17 the first several verses. 00:08:55.20\00:08:56.66 There, God told Moses to take His rod... 00:08:56.94\00:09:00.53 By the way, the rod represents judgment. 00:09:01.58\00:09:03.33 Every time that Moses raised his rod, a judgment fell upon Egypt. 00:09:03.36\00:09:06.78 Right? 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.18 So he raised his rod and he was to strike what? 00:09:08.21\00:09:11.29 He was to strike or to smite the rock. 00:09:11.79\00:09:14.78 And when he smote the rock, what did the rock do? 00:09:14.81\00:09:18.37 The rock gave it's what? 00:09:18.67\00:09:20.74 It's water. 00:09:20.77\00:09:22.14 Now what did that rock represent? 00:09:22.17\00:09:24.62 Clearly the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 10 00:09:25.34\00:09:29.56 that the rock was Christ. 00:09:29.59\00:09:32.05 The rock represented Christ. 00:09:32.08\00:09:33.65 Now what is represented by the fact that the rod 00:09:33.68\00:09:36.70 struck the rock and then the rock gave it's water? 00:09:37.30\00:09:40.58 The fact is that Isaiah 53 says that Jesus was stricken 00:09:40.99\00:09:45.64 and smitten by God. 00:09:45.67\00:09:47.65 In other words, Jesus was that rock that was smitten 00:09:48.52\00:09:51.28 by the rod of God's judgment in our place. 00:09:51.31\00:09:54.31 And as a result, what could Jesus pour out 00:09:54.34\00:09:57.12 on the day of Pentecost? 00:09:57.15\00:09:58.56 He could pour out His what? 00:09:58.59\00:10:00.26 His Spirit, because the water represents what? 00:10:00.48\00:10:03.44 It represents the Holy Spirit. That's right. 00:10:03.47\00:10:06.20 You can read that in 1 Corinthians 12 verse 13 00:10:06.23\00:10:09.15 where it says that we have all drunk from one Spirit. 00:10:09.18\00:10:12.37 The water that comes from the rock represents the Holy Spirit. 00:10:12.40\00:10:15.85 Why could Jesus send forth the Holy Spirit? 00:10:15.88\00:10:19.69 Because first He had been what? 00:10:19.72\00:10:21.75 He had been smitten under the judgment of God. 00:10:21.78\00:10:24.68 He took our judgment upon Himself. 00:10:24.71\00:10:26.40 But there's a second rock episode that is found 00:10:26.77\00:10:29.00 in Numbers chapter 20 verses 8 through 11. 00:10:29.03\00:10:31.97 There, Moses is told to go to the rock, 00:10:32.45\00:10:36.89 but not to strike the rock. 00:10:36.92\00:10:38.69 But to what? 00:10:38.72\00:10:40.09 But to speak to the rock. 00:10:40.12\00:10:42.57 So who is He really speaking to, symbolically? 00:10:42.98\00:10:46.25 He's speaking to Christ. 00:10:46.28\00:10:47.93 And instead of speaking to the rock, what did Moses do? 00:10:48.38\00:10:52.46 He smote the rock twice. 00:10:52.74\00:10:55.41 Why did God tell Moses to speak to the rock 00:10:55.64\00:10:58.35 so that the rock would give its water? 00:10:58.38\00:11:00.16 Listen folks, Jesus only had to die once to 00:11:00.19\00:11:03.54 pour out His Holy Spirit. 00:11:03.57\00:11:05.07 If we want His Holy Spirit today, Jesus does not 00:11:05.10\00:11:08.65 have to be stricken again. 00:11:08.68\00:11:10.15 All we have to do is ask for the Holy Spirit 00:11:10.18\00:11:14.63 and the Lord will give us His Holy Spirit. 00:11:14.66\00:11:17.03 And so notice once again, the sacrifice makes it possible 00:11:17.37\00:11:21.73 to pour out what? 00:11:21.76\00:11:23.13 It makes it possible to pour out the Holy Spirit. 00:11:23.16\00:11:26.79 Now let's talk a little bit about the temple geography. 00:11:27.34\00:11:31.13 We noticed first of all that Jesus came and lived 00:11:31.78\00:11:34.60 with us in the camp. 00:11:34.63\00:11:36.00 Then He moved where? 00:11:36.72\00:11:38.53 To the Court. 00:11:38.84\00:11:40.21 He moved to the altar of sacrifice where He 00:11:40.24\00:11:42.08 died for our sins. 00:11:42.11\00:11:43.64 Then He resurrected where? 00:11:43.67\00:11:46.89 He resurrected in the laver, as we studied last night. 00:11:47.09\00:11:50.56 The laver represented His resurrection. 00:11:50.59\00:11:54.27 Now let me ask you, where do you think Jesus 00:11:54.96\00:11:58.33 would go next in His ministry? 00:11:58.36\00:12:01.36 He's following the order of the Sanctuary. 00:12:01.77\00:12:03.82 You would expect the next step to be what? 00:12:03.85\00:12:07.03 Entering the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:12:07.26\00:12:12.12 Let me ask you, what happened on the day of Pentecost? 00:12:12.77\00:12:15.22 Jesus had been sacrificed, Jesus had died. 00:12:15.25\00:12:17.59 How did God show that He approved of the 00:12:17.62\00:12:20.05 sacrifice of Christ? 00:12:20.08\00:12:21.57 On the day of Pentecost, God sent what? 00:12:21.97\00:12:25.53 The Holy Spirit. 00:12:25.56\00:12:26.93 And what was seen on the day of Pentecost? 00:12:26.96\00:12:29.28 Tongues as of what? 00:12:29.31\00:12:31.70 Tongues as of fire. 00:12:31.73\00:12:33.25 In other words, the key event on the day of Pentecost 00:12:33.28\00:12:36.42 was that God in heaven by sending the fire 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.19 was saying, "The sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the life of 00:12:39.22\00:12:43.70 Jesus Christ, has been accepted." 00:12:43.73\00:12:46.95 And the fire on earth was the announcement 00:12:46.98\00:12:49.01 that the sacrifice had been accepted. 00:12:49.04\00:12:51.07 Let me read you a significant statement from Ellen White. 00:12:51.38\00:12:55.10 I never cease to be amazed at Ellen White. 00:12:55.13\00:12:58.07 She had two and a half years of primary education. 00:12:58.35\00:13:01.08 But she understood these things. 00:13:01.33\00:13:03.23 She had profound perception. 00:13:03.26\00:13:05.84 In the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:13:05.87\00:13:07.35 we believe that she had the prophetic gift. 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.42 And I have read thousands of pages and I agree 00:13:09.45\00:13:13.18 a hundred percent with that assessment. 00:13:13.21\00:13:14.74 Not because somebody told me so. 00:13:14.77\00:13:16.80 Not because the church taught me so. 00:13:16.83\00:13:19.41 But because I have studied it for myself. 00:13:19.44\00:13:22.04 Notice what she has to say. 00:13:22.07\00:13:23.59 This is in her book, Acts Of The Apostles. 00:13:23.62\00:13:27.15 Acts Of The Apostles, pages.. Actually it's page... 00:13:27.18\00:13:32.07 Not Acts Of The Apostles. It's also there. 00:13:32.75\00:13:35.12 It's Story Of Redemption, page 386. 00:13:35.15\00:13:37.47 And it's repeated in Acts Of The Apostles. 00:13:37.50\00:13:39.36 But I wrote down here, from Story of Redemption, 386. 00:13:39.39\00:13:42.26 Notice what she says. 00:13:42.29\00:13:43.66 What did Jesus go into the Holy Place to do? 00:14:30.21\00:14:32.95 To pour out on earth upon His disciples, what? 00:14:32.98\00:14:36.04 The benefits of His atonement. 00:14:36.07\00:14:38.68 And you say, "Pastor Bohr, what are the benefits 00:14:38.71\00:14:41.52 of His atonement?" 00:14:41.55\00:14:42.92 Very simple. 00:14:42.95\00:14:44.32 The benefits of His atonement are His perfect life 00:14:44.35\00:14:47.97 and His death for sin. 00:14:48.33\00:14:49.94 In other words, Jesus, by living a perfect life, 00:14:50.69\00:14:53.71 now had a life to offer to any and everyone who comes to 00:14:54.01\00:14:58.43 Him in faith and asks Him for that life. 00:14:58.46\00:15:01.03 And by dying on the cross, Jesus now has 00:15:01.34\00:15:04.45 that death to reckon to our account if we receive 00:15:04.48\00:15:07.73 Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. 00:15:07.76\00:15:10.00 Those are the benefits of His atonement on earth. 00:15:10.10\00:15:13.48 In other words, Jesus went to heaven. 00:15:13.51\00:15:15.25 And now He has a perfect life and He has a perfect death 00:15:15.28\00:15:19.04 that He can offer to everyone who comes to Him in faith. 00:15:19.07\00:15:24.05 Now the question is, where did Jesus go 00:15:24.55\00:15:26.93 when He ascended to heaven? 00:15:26.96\00:15:28.33 Well if you look at the geography of the Sanctuary, 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.34 it's a no brainer. 00:15:30.37\00:15:31.74 Jesus went where? 00:15:32.24\00:15:34.02 He went into the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:15:34.05\00:15:37.05 But we don't have to simply follow the 00:15:37.08\00:15:39.20 sequence of the Sanctuary. 00:15:39.23\00:15:40.80 All we have to do is go to the book of Revelation 00:15:41.03\00:15:44.10 and examine where Jesus was after His ascension. 00:15:44.33\00:15:47.82 Notice what we find in Revelation chapter 4 verse 5. 00:15:48.09\00:15:52.75 This is in heaven now. 00:15:53.08\00:15:54.76 This is after the ascension of Christ. 00:15:54.79\00:15:57.44 Notice Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5. 00:15:57.47\00:15:59.84 And by the way, this is being written in the year 95 AD. 00:15:59.87\00:16:04.42 It's over 60 years after the resurrection of Jesus. 00:16:04.45\00:16:07.62 So we're going to see where Jesus was 00:16:07.65\00:16:09.32 60 years after His resurrection. 00:16:09.35\00:16:11.72 It says there in Revelation chapter 4 and verse 5... 00:16:12.59\00:16:15.16 Let me ask you, where were the seven lamps of fire 00:16:29.23\00:16:33.46 located in the Sanctuary? 00:16:33.49\00:16:35.21 They were located in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:16:35.68\00:16:38.95 So where is this throne located? 00:16:39.15\00:16:41.51 It is located in the Holy Place. 00:16:41.54\00:16:43.88 Because it says here that there are seven lamps of fire. 00:16:44.09\00:16:48.39 And what do those seven lamps of fire represent? 00:16:48.42\00:16:51.48 It says here that they represent what? 00:16:51.79\00:16:54.06 The seven Spirits of God. 00:16:54.09\00:16:55.86 Now don't misunderstand. 00:16:55.89\00:16:57.45 There are not seven Holy Spirits. 00:16:57.48\00:16:59.69 The number seven in Scripture represents fullness or totality. 00:17:00.32\00:17:05.96 In other words, seven is a symbolic number. 00:17:06.24\00:17:08.44 It's the totality or fullness of the Spirit. 00:17:08.47\00:17:11.67 Now notice in Revelation 4 verse 5 the lamps are there 00:17:11.70\00:17:16.14 burning before the throne, the seven lamps. 00:17:16.17\00:17:18.50 But then in chapter 5, Jesus arrives. 00:17:18.75\00:17:22.31 And I want you to notice what happens with those 00:17:22.34\00:17:24.81 seven lamps of fire. 00:17:24.84\00:17:26.21 Revelation chapter 5 and let's read verse... 00:17:26.39\00:17:30.58 Let's see here, verse 8 and then we'll go back to verse 6. 00:17:32.57\00:17:36.26 Verse 8. 00:17:36.29\00:17:37.66 "Now when He had taken the scroll," this is Jesus, 00:17:37.69\00:17:40.35 "the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders 00:17:40.38\00:17:43.38 fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, 00:17:43.41\00:17:46.98 and golden bowls..." now listen to this. 00:17:47.01\00:17:50.15 Golden bowls full of what? 00:17:50.18\00:17:52.12 "...full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." 00:17:52.41\00:17:56.36 Question, where was incense offered in the Sanctuary? 00:17:56.39\00:18:00.65 Incense was offered in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary 00:18:01.04\00:18:05.07 at the altar of incense. 00:18:05.10\00:18:06.53 So where is this event taking place in Revelation 00:18:06.56\00:18:10.98 chapter 4 and chapter 5? 00:18:11.01\00:18:12.86 It is taking place in the Holy Place. 00:18:12.89\00:18:14.89 Because there are the seven lamps of fire 00:18:14.92\00:18:17.31 and there also is the altar, the golden altar of incense. 00:18:17.34\00:18:21.27 But now I want us to notice Revelation 5 and verse 6. 00:18:21.30\00:18:24.49 This is a key verse. 00:18:24.52\00:18:25.94 Jesus now arrives on the scene. 00:18:26.16\00:18:28.74 And this is happening in heaven. 00:18:28.99\00:18:31.06 It says there... 00:18:31.09\00:18:32.46 Where is the Lamb located? 00:18:46.25\00:18:47.98 At the ark of the covenant? 00:18:48.01\00:18:49.78 No, He's located where the seven candlesticks are 00:18:49.81\00:18:53.52 and where the altar of incense is. 00:18:53.55\00:18:55.65 And so it says... 00:18:55.68\00:18:57.05 Question, had this Lamb just been slain? 00:18:59.61\00:19:02.27 And had He just ascended to heaven? 00:19:02.30\00:19:04.12 Yes, because this happened in heaven. 00:19:04.15\00:19:06.02 It's after His ascension after His sacrifice. 00:19:06.05\00:19:08.52 But now notice a very interesting little expression. 00:19:08.55\00:19:11.57 It says here... 00:19:11.60\00:19:12.97 In Revelation 4 verse 5, the seven Spirits are what? 00:19:28.09\00:19:32.56 They are there before the throne. 00:19:32.73\00:19:34.62 But in chapter 5 when Jesus arrives, the Lamb arrives, 00:19:34.99\00:19:38.29 what happens with those seven Spirits, 00:19:38.32\00:19:40.46 or the fullness of the Spirit? 00:19:40.49\00:19:41.96 The fullness of the Spirit is sent out into the whole earth. 00:19:42.21\00:19:45.90 Let me ask you, what event was that when the fullness 00:19:45.93\00:19:48.42 of the Spirit was sent out to the earth? 00:19:48.45\00:19:50.26 It was sent out when? 00:19:50.58\00:19:52.40 On the day of Pentecost. 00:19:52.43\00:19:53.80 Do you see here? 00:19:53.83\00:19:55.20 The Lamb slain and then the Holy Spirit is 00:19:55.23\00:19:57.72 poured out in its fullness. 00:19:57.75\00:19:59.62 And so what happened on the day of Pentecost 00:19:59.66\00:20:01.92 was simply God was announcing by the fire on earth 00:20:01.95\00:20:05.38 that in heaven the sacrifice of Jesus Christ 00:20:05.41\00:20:08.80 had been accepted for sin. 00:20:08.83\00:20:11.08 And now the Sanctuary was open for business. 00:20:11.11\00:20:15.12 Now go with me to Hebrews chapter 9 and verse 12. 00:20:16.40\00:20:19.24 And I'm reading from the King James Version because 00:20:19.80\00:20:22.10 the King James Version is most accurate in this verse. 00:20:22.13\00:20:25.38 Remember, we are eclectic in our use of 00:20:25.41\00:20:28.46 translations of the Bible. 00:20:28.49\00:20:30.02 Not any translation is perfect. 00:20:30.22\00:20:32.45 Some have their pros and have their cons, 00:20:32.48\00:20:34.77 and vice versa. 00:20:34.80\00:20:36.17 We need to look for the best translation. 00:20:36.20\00:20:38.47 And here, the Kings James has the best translation. 00:20:38.79\00:20:41.88 Notice what it says. 00:20:41.91\00:20:43.28 This is Jesus. 00:20:49.30\00:20:50.67 Many versions say, "Most Holy Place." 00:20:58.32\00:21:00.11 Mistranslation. 00:21:00.14\00:21:01.51 Now listen careful to what I'm going to say. 00:21:12.01\00:21:13.85 Passover was in the early spring in the Hebrew year. 00:21:14.72\00:21:19.78 In fact, it was at the beginning of spring 00:21:19.81\00:21:22.14 around the time of Easter. 00:21:22.17\00:21:24.39 Pentecost was in the late spring around our month of May. 00:21:25.45\00:21:32.02 Now could Jesus have entered the Most Holy Place 00:21:33.79\00:21:36.90 upon His ascension? 00:21:36.93\00:21:38.40 No. Let me explain why. 00:21:38.71\00:21:40.26 Because the Most Holy Place came to view 00:21:40.62\00:21:43.32 what season of the year? 00:21:43.35\00:21:44.92 The Most Holy Place came into view in the fall. 00:21:46.48\00:21:50.11 And Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. 00:21:53.23\00:21:57.52 Which is when? In the spring. 00:21:57.55\00:21:59.49 So how could Jesus enter in a spring feast 00:21:59.52\00:22:03.38 into the Most Holy Place, which took place at the 00:22:03.58\00:22:06.84 time of the fall feast? 00:22:06.87\00:22:08.35 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:22:08.38\00:22:09.93 So in other words, Jesus Christ could not have entered 00:22:10.35\00:22:13.98 the Most Holy Place upon His ascension 00:22:14.01\00:22:16.51 to pour out the Holy Spirit because that did not happen 00:22:16.54\00:22:19.26 on the Day of Atonement which happened in the fall. 00:22:19.29\00:22:21.59 It happened when? 00:22:21.62\00:22:22.99 In the spring at the feast of Pentecost. 00:22:23.02\00:22:27.72 Now allow me to give you an illustration so you understand 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.36 what Jesus went to heaven to do. 00:22:31.39\00:22:33.04 I want you to imagine the owner of a bank. 00:22:33.96\00:22:36.64 This owner of this bank, out of mercy and grace, 00:22:38.03\00:22:41.74 says, "I feel so sorry for those earthlings. 00:22:42.68\00:22:46.96 They're so much in debt with their mortgage, and their 00:22:47.26\00:22:50.68 credit cards and department stores, educational bills, 00:22:50.71\00:22:53.84 and auto loans. 00:22:53.87\00:22:55.24 So what I'm going to do is I'm going to deposit 00:22:55.70\00:22:58.84 in a bank enough money to pay every person's debt 00:22:58.87\00:23:03.15 on planet earth. 00:23:03.18\00:23:04.55 It doesn't matter whether it's mortgage, credit cards, 00:23:04.58\00:23:07.17 department stores, educational bills, auto loans. 00:23:07.20\00:23:10.09 I'm going to deposit in that bank enough capital so that 00:23:10.12\00:23:13.43 everybody's bills can be paid." 00:23:13.46\00:23:16.06 And he sends out the announcement. 00:23:17.96\00:23:19.64 There's only one catch. 00:23:21.00\00:23:22.57 And that is that you have to come to the bank personally 00:23:23.41\00:23:26.22 and ask for the money. 00:23:26.51\00:23:27.97 Are you with me? 00:23:30.14\00:23:31.51 What happens if you fail to come to the bank 00:23:31.60\00:23:34.24 and ask for the money? 00:23:34.27\00:23:35.64 You will still be what? 00:23:35.93\00:23:37.80 You will still be in debt. 00:23:37.83\00:23:39.76 When Jesus lived His life He deposited, so to speak, 00:23:40.39\00:23:44.08 enough currency in the bank of heaven to pay everyone's debt 00:23:44.11\00:23:48.68 on planet earth. 00:23:48.71\00:23:50.22 No one needs to be indebted by sin. 00:23:50.25\00:23:52.66 Nobody needs to have sin against them. 00:23:52.69\00:23:55.22 Because when Jesus lived and died, His life and His death 00:23:55.25\00:23:58.83 was enough capital to forgive everyone's sins on planet earth. 00:23:58.86\00:24:03.08 Those who have lived, are living, and will live. 00:24:03.11\00:24:05.53 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:24:05.56\00:24:06.93 But what do people have to do? 00:24:07.11\00:24:08.64 They have to come in faith to Jesus Christ, 00:24:08.95\00:24:12.50 who is ministering in the Holy Place, 00:24:12.53\00:24:14.78 in repentance confessing sin and trusting in Him, 00:24:14.81\00:24:18.77 and saying, "Jesus, please take Your life and 00:24:18.80\00:24:22.52 put it to my account. 00:24:22.55\00:24:23.92 Please, Jesus, take Your death and put it to my account." 00:24:23.95\00:24:27.11 And when I personally and individually do this, 00:24:27.14\00:24:30.25 then my sins are forgiven and God looks upon me 00:24:30.28\00:24:33.87 as if I had never sinned. 00:24:33.90\00:24:35.37 Now you're saying, "Pastor, give me proof." 00:24:36.53\00:24:38.33 Let's look at what the Bible has to say about this. 00:24:39.40\00:24:42.13 Most Christians think that Jesus finished His work 00:24:42.91\00:24:45.67 at the cross. 00:24:45.70\00:24:47.07 And it's true that the provision for salvation was finished 00:24:47.49\00:24:51.62 at the cross when Jesus said, "It is finished." 00:24:51.65\00:24:54.15 But my question is, if salvation was finished at the cross, 00:24:54.47\00:24:58.07 what has Jesus been doing the last 2000 years? 00:24:58.10\00:25:01.24 Most Christians can't answer that. 00:25:02.78\00:25:04.37 What Jesus has been doing, He opened the Holy Place. 00:25:05.64\00:25:08.29 He's open for business for people to come and claim 00:25:08.32\00:25:12.32 what He did on earth, what He did in the Court. 00:25:12.80\00:25:17.01 Now allow me to read you some statements 00:25:17.29\00:25:19.54 on what Jesus is doing in heaven. 00:25:19.57\00:25:21.27 This is so clear. 00:25:21.30\00:25:22.67 1 Timothy chapter 2 and verses 5 and 6. 00:25:22.70\00:25:25.80 1 Timothy chapter 2 and verses 5 and 6. 00:25:26.20\00:25:28.71 And notice the tense of the verbs. 00:25:28.74\00:25:31.34 It says here... 00:25:31.77\00:25:33.14 What tense is the verb "is?" 00:25:36.13\00:25:37.50 Present. 00:25:37.53\00:25:38.90 So do we need a Mediator? 00:25:48.96\00:25:50.84 Yes we do. 00:25:51.56\00:25:52.93 Now notice... 00:25:52.96\00:25:54.33 What tense is the verb "gave?" 00:25:55.61\00:25:57.08 Past. Okay? 00:25:57.48\00:25:58.85 Let me ask you, when is it that the testifying began 00:26:09.13\00:26:12.31 about what Jesus did when He died on the cross? 00:26:12.34\00:26:15.42 It began when the Holy Spirit was poured out and the apostles 00:26:15.93\00:26:19.30 began preaching Jesus Christ on the day of Pentecost. 00:26:19.33\00:26:22.58 Are you with me? 00:26:22.61\00:26:23.98 Let's continue reading. 00:26:24.01\00:26:25.38 So it says... 00:26:25.41\00:26:26.78 "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, 00:26:26.81\00:26:31.51 the Man Christ Jesus who gave Himself..." 00:26:31.54\00:26:34.52 That's His sacrifice. 00:26:34.55\00:26:36.28 "...a ransom for all..." 00:26:36.31\00:26:37.91 And now notice what needs to happen as a 00:26:37.94\00:26:39.83 result of what He did. 00:26:39.86\00:26:41.23 "...to be..." What? "...testified in due time..." 00:26:41.26\00:26:44.00 That is on the day of Pentecost. 00:26:44.03\00:26:45.40 And then the apostle Paul explains. 00:26:45.43\00:26:47.15 He says, "..for which I was appointed a..." What? 00:26:47.18\00:26:50.64 Do you know what the preaching of the apostles was? 00:26:59.75\00:27:01.98 It was calling the world to say, "Jesus lived for you 00:27:02.33\00:27:04.92 and Jesus died for you. 00:27:04.95\00:27:06.32 You come in faith to Him, you trust in Him, 00:27:06.35\00:27:08.91 you repent, you confess your sins, you trust in His merits, 00:27:08.94\00:27:11.95 and He will take His life and He will take His death, 00:27:11.98\00:27:14.25 and He will place those to your account. 00:27:14.28\00:27:15.85 That was the apostolic preaching. 00:27:16.49\00:27:18.42 Notice 1 John chapter 2 and verse 1. 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.45 1 John chapter 2 and verse 1. 00:27:21.48\00:27:23.72 So what is Jesus doing now? 00:27:35.85\00:27:37.64 He is our what? 00:27:38.21\00:27:39.64 Our Advocate before the Father. 00:27:39.67\00:27:42.20 Notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verse 25. 00:27:42.57\00:27:45.61 Hebrews chapter 7 verse 25. 00:27:45.64\00:27:47.79 It says here... 00:27:48.16\00:27:49.53 Now who is He able to save? 00:27:54.98\00:27:56.42 Did He save everybody at the cross? 00:27:56.45\00:27:58.77 Listen carefully. 00:27:58.80\00:28:00.17 Because He's the Mediator. 00:28:09.87\00:28:11.29 Who is "them?" 00:28:15.74\00:28:17.11 Those who come to God through Him. 00:28:17.14\00:28:20.21 Now I want you to notice Romans chapter 8 verses 33 to 34. 00:28:21.38\00:28:25.26 Once again, Jesus is spoken of as the Mediator. 00:28:25.53\00:28:27.98 We can come to Him in faith? 00:28:28.01\00:28:29.59 And we can claim what Jesus did by His life and by His death. 00:28:29.89\00:28:33.32 Romans 8 and verse 33. 00:28:33.35\00:28:35.43 Now let me ask you this question. 00:28:58.98\00:29:00.35 Were all sins forgiven at the cross? 00:29:00.38\00:29:02.79 If you ask most Christians that question, they would say, 00:29:04.46\00:29:07.50 "Yes, all sins were forgiven at the cross." 00:29:07.53\00:29:10.04 Listen, all sins were not forgiven at the cross. 00:29:10.23\00:29:13.25 I'm going to prove it biblically. 00:29:14.54\00:29:16.50 Because listen, listen careful to what I'm going to say. 00:29:16.70\00:29:19.88 Forgiveness is a personal thing. 00:29:19.91\00:29:22.55 It is an individual thing. 00:29:23.15\00:29:25.19 The life and death of Jesus was corporate. 00:29:25.22\00:29:28.38 The life was for everyone. 00:29:29.12\00:29:31.25 His death was for everyone. 00:29:31.61\00:29:33.94 But only those who individually and personally claim it 00:29:34.57\00:29:38.95 will be benefited by what Jesus did. 00:29:38.98\00:29:41.93 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:29:41.96\00:29:43.53 Critically important what Jesus is doing in the Holy Place. 00:29:43.83\00:29:46.81 Most Christians are oblivious. 00:29:47.10\00:29:48.68 Most Christians say, "Oh, the cross, the cross. 00:29:48.71\00:29:51.07 Jesus died on the cross. Hallelujah. 00:29:51.10\00:29:53.22 Everyone is saved." 00:29:53.25\00:29:54.62 But then what about Jesus. 00:29:55.62\00:29:56.99 What has He been doing for the last 2000 years 00:29:57.02\00:29:59.43 in the Holy Place of the heavenly Sanctuary? 00:29:59.46\00:30:01.67 Now I want to read several texts that speak about forgiveness. 00:30:01.70\00:30:05.86 Notice what we find in the gospel of Luke 00:30:05.89\00:30:08.72 chapter 24 and verses 46 and 47. 00:30:08.75\00:30:11.76 Here is where Jesus is speaking about what His apostles 00:30:12.67\00:30:15.65 should preach, what the message of the apostles should be. 00:30:15.68\00:30:18.70 What present truth for that day and age was. 00:30:18.73\00:30:22.18 Luke 24 and verses 46 and 47. 00:30:22.21\00:30:26.50 This is in the upper room the evening of the resurrection. 00:30:26.53\00:30:29.63 Are you seeing this? 00:30:39.93\00:30:41.30 Jesus died and He what? Resurrected. 00:30:41.33\00:30:44.24 That's the altar of sacrifice and what? 00:30:44.27\00:30:46.97 And the laver. 00:30:47.00\00:30:48.37 Now notice. 00:30:48.40\00:30:49.77 The word "remission," don't be confused by that. 00:31:00.44\00:31:02.29 It simply means forgiveness. 00:31:02.32\00:31:03.82 It's translated in many versions, forgiveness. 00:31:03.85\00:31:06.75 Remission is forgiveness. 00:31:06.78\00:31:08.45 And so it says... 00:31:08.48\00:31:09.85 What was the message that the apostles were suppose to preach? 00:31:17.65\00:31:21.01 They were suppose to preach what? 00:31:21.21\00:31:23.06 Repentance and what else? 00:31:23.54\00:31:25.64 And forgiveness of sins. 00:31:25.67\00:31:28.22 That was present truth. 00:31:28.25\00:31:29.62 Now let's see if the apostles obeyed what Jesus said. 00:31:29.65\00:31:31.95 Go with me to Acts chapter 2 and verse 38. 00:31:32.35\00:31:34.50 Here, the apostle Peter is preaching on the 00:31:34.89\00:31:37.33 day of Pentecost. 00:31:37.36\00:31:38.73 After His sermon many, many men come and they say to Peter, 00:31:38.76\00:31:42.56 "What do we need to do in the light of what you have said? 00:31:42.59\00:31:45.12 That Jesus has ascended to the right hand of God. 00:31:45.15\00:31:47.76 He has become the Prince of His people now. 00:31:47.79\00:31:50.15 He's up there ministering for His people. 00:31:50.18\00:31:54.60 What are we suppose to do?" 00:31:54.63\00:31:56.21 Notice what Peter had to say in Acts 2 verse 38. 00:31:56.24\00:31:59.71 Ah, so repent and be what? 00:32:06.71\00:32:10.08 Baptized. 00:32:10.11\00:32:11.48 And as we've seen when we're baptized in the name of 00:32:13.96\00:32:16.01 Jesus Christ, we're include in Him, right? 00:32:16.04\00:32:17.84 That's when His life becomes our life. 00:32:18.43\00:32:20.69 That's when His death becomes our death. 00:32:20.72\00:32:22.84 Because in baptism, I am dying and I am 00:32:22.87\00:32:25.71 resurrecting in Him. 00:32:25.74\00:32:27.16 And so it says... 00:32:27.72\00:32:29.09 Were all sins remitted or forgiven at the cross? 00:32:38.70\00:32:41.33 No, because it says repent and be baptized 00:32:41.63\00:32:43.90 for the remission of sins. 00:32:43.93\00:32:45.51 And then notice it also says... 00:32:45.81\00:32:47.47 Notice Acts chapter 5 and verse 31. 00:32:51.41\00:32:54.15 Acts chapter 5 and verse 31. 00:32:54.18\00:32:56.93 Once again, let's see when it is that God forgives sin. 00:32:57.28\00:33:01.01 It says there in Acts chapter 5 and verse 31, 00:33:01.30\00:33:04.46 speaking about Jesus... 00:33:04.49\00:33:05.86 Where did Jesus go according to what we've studied? 00:33:14.65\00:33:17.25 To the right hand of God on the throne. 00:33:17.92\00:33:20.04 And where is that throne? 00:33:20.07\00:33:21.48 See, some people assume the throne is always 00:33:22.01\00:33:23.81 in the Most Holy Place. 00:33:23.84\00:33:25.21 No, there's also a throne in the Holy. 00:33:25.24\00:33:26.61 We're going to study this in our seminar. 00:33:26.64\00:33:29.03 And so notice it says... 00:33:29.39\00:33:30.76 Does forgiveness of sins come after the 00:33:42.51\00:33:44.79 ascension of Jesus Christ? 00:33:44.82\00:33:46.23 Or does it come when He died on the cross? 00:33:47.05\00:33:49.14 It's after He's exalted to be what? 00:33:49.42\00:33:51.82 Prince and Savior to give repentance and to give 00:33:51.85\00:33:55.26 forgiveness of sins. 00:33:55.29\00:33:56.66 Notice Acts chapter 10 and verse 43. 00:33:56.69\00:33:59.46 The testimony of Scripture is uniform on this. 00:33:59.49\00:34:02.56 Acts chapter 10 and verse 43. 00:34:02.59\00:34:05.72 Speaking about Jesus, it says... 00:34:05.75\00:34:08.01 What does "whoever" means? 00:34:18.30\00:34:19.94 Is that individual or is that corporate? 00:34:20.43\00:34:22.50 Individual. 00:34:23.80\00:34:25.17 Did you notice in Acts 2 verse 38 that Peter says, 00:34:25.20\00:34:28.06 "repent and be baptized every one of you," 00:34:29.08\00:34:33.08 he says there in Acts 2 verse 38? 00:34:33.11\00:34:35.16 What does Acts 10 verse 43 say? 00:34:35.19\00:34:37.50 Were their sins remitted at the cross, 00:34:51.74\00:34:53.70 forgiven at the cross? 00:34:53.73\00:34:55.14 No. Clearly not. 00:34:55.17\00:34:57.87 It says here in Acts 10:43 that whoever believes in Him; 00:34:57.90\00:35:02.41 whoever, individually, believes in Him 00:35:02.44\00:35:04.85 will receive forgiveness of sins. 00:35:04.88\00:35:08.83 Notice Acts chapter 8 verses 20 to 23. 00:35:08.86\00:35:11.70 This is speaking about Simon Magus who wanted to 00:35:11.88\00:35:14.72 buy the gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:35:14.75\00:35:16.56 And Peter firmly rebuked him. 00:35:16.99\00:35:19.10 Notice what it says in Acts chapter 8 and verse 20. 00:35:19.13\00:35:22.04 What did he need to do? 00:35:43.33\00:35:44.70 Repent of his wickedness. 00:35:45.17\00:35:46.98 And then what else? 00:35:47.01\00:35:48.38 "...pray God..." 00:35:48.76\00:35:51.36 In the name of whom? 00:35:51.39\00:35:52.76 We've already noticed that we come to God through Him. 00:35:53.33\00:35:55.80 Was Simon Magus forgiven at the cross? 00:36:04.81\00:36:07.56 No. 00:36:08.08\00:36:09.45 He had to repent and pray to God. 00:36:09.48\00:36:11.94 And then he would be what? 00:36:11.97\00:36:14.11 And then he would be forgiven. 00:36:14.33\00:36:16.68 Are you catching the picture? 00:36:17.15\00:36:18.52 What did Jesus go to heaven to do? 00:36:18.88\00:36:20.65 Has He been on vacation for 2000 years? 00:36:21.11\00:36:23.65 Just sitting there doing nothing, twiddling His thumbs? 00:36:23.95\00:36:26.75 I don't want to be sacrilegious. 00:36:26.78\00:36:29.46 But no. 00:36:29.49\00:36:30.86 Jesus has been receiving individual clients. 00:36:30.89\00:36:35.10 Through repentance. 00:36:35.74\00:36:37.45 Through confession. 00:36:37.80\00:36:39.35 And through trusting in Jesus we can now claim the benefits 00:36:39.55\00:36:44.12 of the life of Jesus and His death on the cross of Calvary. 00:36:44.15\00:36:48.57 Now let's talk for a few minutes about the conditions 00:36:49.14\00:36:53.32 for sin to be forgiven. 00:36:53.35\00:36:55.09 You know, some people simply say, "Receive Jesus Christ 00:36:55.80\00:36:58.50 and all is well." 00:36:58.53\00:36:59.90 That's not what the New Testament teaches. 00:37:00.85\00:37:03.11 There are conditions for receiving forgiveness. 00:37:03.38\00:37:06.27 And I'm going to mention five clear conditions that are 00:37:06.30\00:37:09.94 mentioned in the New Testament. 00:37:09.97\00:37:11.38 The first of these is repentance. 00:37:11.41\00:37:14.51 Let me read you some verses of the Bible. 00:37:14.85\00:37:17.00 Acts 2 verse 38. 00:37:17.03\00:37:18.40 We've already read it, let's read it again. 00:37:18.43\00:37:20.16 What is the condition for receiving forgiveness? 00:37:35.35\00:37:38.28 Repentance, the apostle Peter says. 00:37:38.84\00:37:42.80 Notice Luke 17 and verses 3 and 4. 00:37:42.83\00:37:46.31 Luke 17 and verses 3 and 4. 00:37:46.34\00:37:49.85 Notice once again the idea of repentance and forgiveness, 00:37:49.88\00:37:53.06 repentance and forgiveness. 00:37:53.09\00:37:54.64 Is repentance corporate or is repentance an individual thing? 00:37:54.67\00:37:58.42 It is individual. 00:37:58.62\00:37:59.99 Notice... 00:38:00.02\00:38:01.39 Is there a condition for receiving forgiveness? 00:38:10.12\00:38:12.42 Yes. If he repents, forgive him. 00:38:12.45\00:38:15.35 And now comes the difficult part. 00:38:15.38\00:38:16.97 And of course, the immediate question is, 00:38:27.24\00:38:28.90 how do you know that his repentance is genuine? 00:38:28.93\00:38:31.58 The fact is, that's not for you to determine. 00:38:32.87\00:38:35.78 That's the reason for the judgment that we're 00:38:36.53\00:38:38.86 going to talk about. 00:38:38.89\00:38:40.26 You see, the judgment will reveal if repentance 00:38:40.29\00:38:43.18 was genuine or not. 00:38:43.21\00:38:45.18 That is one of the purposes of the judgment. 00:38:45.21\00:38:47.85 Which we'll deal with a little bit later one. 00:38:47.88\00:38:50.48 Now let's talk about true and counterfeit repentance. 00:38:51.22\00:38:54.64 Is there such a thing as counterfeit repentance? 00:38:55.28\00:38:58.18 Sure. 00:38:58.21\00:38:59.58 Counterfeit repentance is when I'm sorry for the consequences 00:38:59.61\00:39:03.98 that sin produces. 00:39:04.28\00:39:05.85 You say, "Now what does that mean?" 00:39:07.22\00:39:08.59 Let me give you an illustration. 00:39:08.62\00:39:09.99 The Lord blessed me with three sisters. 00:39:10.21\00:39:12.17 No brothers. 00:39:12.87\00:39:14.24 So it was three against one. 00:39:14.74\00:39:16.31 And sometimes I would fight with my sisters, 00:39:16.85\00:39:19.30 tooth and nail. 00:39:19.33\00:39:20.70 And my dad would come and he would say, 00:39:20.93\00:39:22.61 "Steve, you're going to go without dessert." 00:39:22.64\00:39:26.92 That was torture. 00:39:28.56\00:39:29.93 And do you know what I would say? 00:39:30.74\00:39:32.25 I'd say, "Dad, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Dad." 00:39:32.28\00:39:35.74 Do you think I was sorry because I had fought with my sisters? 00:39:37.44\00:39:40.45 Are you kidding? 00:39:40.48\00:39:41.85 I was sorry because I wasn't going to get any cake. 00:39:41.88\00:39:45.53 That is counterfeit repentance. 00:39:46.53\00:39:48.43 It's repenting because of the consequences that your sin 00:39:48.46\00:39:51.77 will produce and not that you're sorry because of the sin itself. 00:39:51.80\00:39:57.15 Now listen carefully. 00:39:57.18\00:39:58.55 We cannot repent. 00:39:58.93\00:40:00.62 Repentance is a gift that God gives us. 00:40:03.00\00:40:05.73 You say, "Now wait a minute." 00:40:06.24\00:40:07.71 You're saying, "I can't repent?" 00:40:07.91\00:40:09.28 No. In fact, you know what? 00:40:09.31\00:40:10.68 I don't want to repent. 00:40:10.85\00:40:12.58 If God did not give me repentance, 00:40:13.18\00:40:15.16 I would never repent. 00:40:15.19\00:40:16.56 So even repentance comes from Him. 00:40:16.59\00:40:18.35 You say, where does the Bible say that? 00:40:18.38\00:40:19.82 Let's read two verses. 00:40:19.85\00:40:21.34 Go with me to Acts chapter 5 verse 31, which we already read. 00:40:21.59\00:40:24.74 But now let's look at it in a different context. 00:40:24.77\00:40:27.56 Acts chapter 5 verse 31, let's read it carefully. 00:40:27.79\00:40:31.11 Speaking about Christ, it says... 00:40:31.14\00:40:33.57 Who is it that gives repentance? 00:40:47.36\00:40:49.45 God gives repentance. 00:40:49.48\00:40:52.56 We don't come up with it naturally. 00:40:52.59\00:40:55.26 Now what is it about God that gives us repentance? 00:40:55.84\00:40:59.73 What causes us to repent? 00:40:59.76\00:41:01.69 Notice Romans chapter 2 and verse 4. 00:41:01.72\00:41:04.31 Romans chapter 2 and verse 4. 00:41:04.34\00:41:07.27 Here it says... 00:41:07.30\00:41:08.67 So you know, when I see that I'm wicked 00:41:28.14\00:41:30.30 and I'm evil, and I'm no good, and I got angry 00:41:30.33\00:41:34.12 and I lost my temper, and then I look at Jesus and say, 00:41:34.15\00:41:37.17 "Oh Jesus, You're so perfect and You're so 00:41:37.20\00:41:40.12 immaculate and so wonderful. 00:41:40.32\00:41:42.18 You never lost Your temper. 00:41:42.21\00:41:43.58 I'm a miserable man." 00:41:43.61\00:41:45.43 And then I say, "But You died on the cross for me." 00:41:45.46\00:41:48.81 What do I do? 00:41:49.86\00:41:51.23 I repent. 00:41:51.62\00:41:52.99 I say, "Jesus, I'm sorry that my sin caused You 00:41:53.18\00:41:56.62 to go to the cross, that I made you suffer." 00:41:56.65\00:41:59.48 The goodness of Jesus, His willingness to forgive me, 00:42:00.16\00:42:03.76 is what leads me to what? 00:42:03.79\00:42:05.30 Is what leads me to repentance. 00:42:05.33\00:42:06.84 Do you know when Adam and Eve really repented? 00:42:06.87\00:42:09.10 Did they repent immediately after their sin? 00:42:09.13\00:42:11.73 Are you kidding? 00:42:11.76\00:42:13.18 They were trying to justify it. 00:42:13.96\00:42:15.63 They weren't sorry. 00:42:15.66\00:42:17.07 Do you know when they were sorry? 00:42:17.10\00:42:18.85 When they had to sacrifice the first animal. 00:42:19.19\00:42:21.58 And God explained to them, "That lamb represents Jesus Christ. 00:42:23.87\00:42:28.86 Your sin is going to kill Jesus." 00:42:28.89\00:42:31.65 Do you think that they felt differently about sin now? 00:42:32.05\00:42:34.51 They no longer tried to excuse sin. 00:42:34.88\00:42:36.94 See, when we catch a glimpse of the cross, 00:42:36.97\00:42:38.97 the perfection of Christ and what it did to Jesus, 00:42:39.00\00:42:42.46 that will show the goodness of God. 00:42:42.49\00:42:44.86 And it will lead us to what? 00:42:44.89\00:42:46.71 It will lead us to repentance. 00:42:46.74\00:42:49.74 So what is true repentance? 00:42:49.77\00:42:51.46 True repentance is saying "I'm sorry," 00:42:51.49\00:42:54.98 or being sorry with no ifs, buts, or maybes. 00:42:55.01\00:42:59.68 Repentance means that you're not repenting 00:43:00.50\00:43:03.31 because you're afraid of receiving a punishment 00:43:03.34\00:43:06.05 or you want to gain a reward. 00:43:06.08\00:43:08.36 Simply, you realize that what you did was wrong. 00:43:08.56\00:43:12.11 That you broke the heart of Jesus through your sin. 00:43:12.14\00:43:16.04 Are you understanding what repentance is? 00:43:16.94\00:43:19.08 It's sorrow for sin because of what it did to our Friend, 00:43:19.11\00:43:23.73 Jesus Christ. 00:43:23.76\00:43:25.13 So the only way that we repent is by looking at the 00:43:25.16\00:43:27.40 goodness of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. 00:43:27.43\00:43:30.01 What He was willing to go through to forgive our sins. 00:43:30.04\00:43:33.78 Then our heart is broken and we truly repent. 00:43:33.81\00:43:36.98 Second condition for receiving forgiveness. 00:43:37.48\00:43:41.05 First of all, repentance. 00:43:41.08\00:43:42.45 Second condition is confession. 00:43:42.48\00:43:45.17 You see, repentance means simply being sorry for sin. 00:43:45.91\00:43:50.27 Confession means saying that you are sorry for sin. 00:43:50.60\00:43:54.65 Notice Daniel chapter 9 and verses 4 and 5 00:43:54.95\00:43:58.99 where Daniel is uttering this magnificent prayer 00:43:59.02\00:44:01.89 that we're going to study later on in this seminar. 00:44:01.92\00:44:04.50 The people of God are in captivity because of their sins, 00:44:04.88\00:44:08.25 and notice what he says. 00:44:08.28\00:44:09.73 See, he's confessing it with his lips. 00:44:15.68\00:44:17.73 He's not only sorry inside. He's saying it. 00:44:17.76\00:44:20.55 It continues saying... 00:44:20.95\00:44:22.32 Any excuses being offered by Daniel at all? 00:44:39.70\00:44:42.64 No excuses. 00:44:42.67\00:44:44.04 Is he openly with his lips confessing his sin 00:44:44.07\00:44:47.48 and the sin of his people? 00:44:47.51\00:44:48.93 Absolutely. 00:44:48.96\00:44:50.33 Notice Psalm 32. 00:44:50.36\00:44:51.73 This is the psalm that David wrote after he committed 00:44:51.76\00:44:54.75 adultery with Bathsheba. 00:44:54.78\00:44:56.55 Psalm 32, it's called a penitential psalm, and verse 5. 00:44:56.75\00:45:01.20 Here David says... 00:45:01.23\00:45:02.61 Notice Psalm 38 and verse 18. 00:45:25.13\00:45:27.72 Psalm 38 and verse 18. 00:45:27.75\00:45:30.05 Here once again the psalmist says... 00:45:30.65\00:45:32.66 "For I will declare my iniquity..." 00:45:32.69\00:45:35.40 Notice, confession with the lips audibly. 00:45:35.43\00:45:38.15 You remember the story of the prodigal son? 00:45:45.57\00:45:47.50 You know, he left home and lived it up. 00:45:49.13\00:45:51.68 He dishonored his father. 00:45:51.71\00:45:53.15 And while he was still afar off, he repented of what he had done. 00:45:53.18\00:45:57.09 And he's drawn back home by the love of his father. 00:45:57.53\00:46:00.40 He said, "Even the servants in my father's house 00:46:00.43\00:46:02.98 live better than I'm living now." 00:46:03.01\00:46:04.86 He's drawn by the love of his father. 00:46:04.89\00:46:07.13 And when he comes home, what does he say? 00:46:07.16\00:46:09.52 Does he simply not say anything? 00:46:10.04\00:46:11.85 He comes back unrepentant and doesn't say anything? 00:46:11.88\00:46:14.15 No, he says what? 00:46:14.18\00:46:15.55 "I have sinned against heaven and against you. 00:46:15.58\00:46:18.64 And I'm not worthy to be called you son." 00:46:18.67\00:46:21.05 And what does the father do? 00:46:21.08\00:46:22.45 The father takes the best robe and covers him 00:46:22.48\00:46:25.37 with the best robe. 00:46:25.40\00:46:26.77 That's justification, being covered with the righteousness 00:46:26.80\00:46:29.50 of Jesus Christ. 00:46:29.53\00:46:30.90 But he confessed his sin and he repented while he was afar off. 00:46:31.07\00:46:35.00 You remember the story of the Pharisee and the publican? 00:46:35.48\00:46:38.05 They both go to the temple and pray. 00:46:38.45\00:46:40.55 The Bible says that the Pharisee prayed to himself, 00:46:40.96\00:46:43.40 "Lord, I'm thankful that I'm not like other men. 00:46:43.43\00:46:46.59 Especially like this miserable sinning publican." 00:46:46.62\00:46:50.08 What did the publican say? 00:46:50.96\00:46:52.39 The Bible says that he stood afar off. 00:46:52.89\00:46:55.51 And he wouldn't even dare look to heaven. 00:46:55.94\00:46:58.65 And he beat his breast. 00:46:58.95\00:47:00.76 And what did he say? 00:47:00.79\00:47:02.16 He said, "Lord, be merciful to me..." What? 00:47:02.78\00:47:05.98 "...a sinner." 00:47:06.21\00:47:07.58 And the Bible says that the publican went home justified. 00:47:07.61\00:47:12.95 Which basically means that he went home forgiven. 00:47:12.98\00:47:16.53 Notice Acts chapter 19 and verses 18 and 19. 00:47:17.10\00:47:20.94 This is talking about a group of people who are very wicked. 00:47:20.97\00:47:24.45 You know, they were involved in spiritualism. 00:47:24.48\00:47:26.63 And they were converted to Jesus Christ. 00:47:26.66\00:47:28.77 And notice what they did as a result. 00:47:28.80\00:47:30.83 Acts 19 and verses 18 and 19. 00:47:30.86\00:47:34.41 It's a public confession. 00:47:43.82\00:47:45.57 Notice Romans chapter 10 and verse 10. 00:48:02.59\00:48:04.64 We're still talking about the second condition, confession. 00:48:04.67\00:48:07.49 Here it says... 00:48:08.13\00:48:09.50 You're all acquainted with that very famous verse. 00:48:17.63\00:48:19.69 You can repeat it from memory. 00:48:19.72\00:48:21.32 1 John chapter 1 and verse 9. 00:48:21.35\00:48:23.82 It says, "If we..." What? 00:48:24.22\00:48:26.55 Is there a condition for receiving forgiveness? 00:48:26.96\00:48:29.31 Yes. 00:48:29.34\00:48:30.71 Must we confess in order to receive forgiveness? 00:48:40.32\00:48:43.33 And must we repent in order to confess? 00:48:43.62\00:48:46.44 Absolutely. 00:48:46.47\00:48:47.84 One more text that deals with confession. 00:48:47.98\00:48:50.16 Proverbs chapter 28 and verse 13. 00:48:50.19\00:48:53.00 Proverbs 28 and verse 13. 00:48:53.03\00:48:55.60 And now this is the bridge to our next condition. 00:49:03.13\00:49:05.92 Now let's go quickly to the third condition 00:49:14.70\00:49:16.95 for receiving forgiveness. 00:49:16.98\00:49:19.04 We must believe in Christ. 00:49:19.07\00:49:21.25 We must trust in His merits. 00:49:21.28\00:49:23.84 We must trust that He will be willing to take His life 00:49:23.87\00:49:26.54 and His death and to place them to our account. 00:49:26.88\00:49:30.19 When we have repented, we've confessed our sin, 00:49:30.22\00:49:32.85 now we say to Jesus, "Lord Jesus, I'm a miserable sinner. 00:49:32.88\00:49:36.59 I confess it with my lips. 00:49:36.88\00:49:38.80 I can feel it in my heart. 00:49:38.83\00:49:40.67 But please, Jesus, I believe and trust in You. 00:49:40.70\00:49:43.92 Take Your life, please, and put it to my account, 00:49:43.95\00:49:47.12 take Your death and put it to my account, 00:49:47.15\00:49:49.78 so that You can look at me as if I'd never sinned." 00:49:49.81\00:49:52.34 And when I trust in Jesus that way, Jesus will do just that. 00:49:52.49\00:49:56.85 Notice Acts chapter 10 and verse 43. 00:49:57.27\00:50:00.31 We're talking about trusting or believing in Jesus. 00:50:00.50\00:50:03.37 It says there in Acts chapter 10 and verse 43, 00:50:03.40\00:50:06.81 speaking about Jesus... 00:50:06.84\00:50:08.23 Now of course you know that famous verse, 00:50:21.32\00:50:23.26 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:50:23.29\00:50:28.34 that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish 00:50:28.37\00:50:34.17 but have everlasting life." 00:50:34.20\00:50:35.57 Just like in the Old Testament, Israel, those who looked 00:50:35.60\00:50:40.22 and beheld the serpent raised in the wilderness were saved. 00:50:40.25\00:50:44.57 So as we look upon Jesus and trust in His life 00:50:44.60\00:50:48.52 and in His death we can have the assurance of forgiveness. 00:50:48.55\00:50:52.62 1 John chapter 2 and verse 1, we've read it before. 00:50:52.96\00:50:56.01 The reason why it says, "Jesus Christ the righteous," 00:51:05.28\00:51:07.38 is because He can come to the Father and can say, 00:51:07.41\00:51:09.84 "Father, Pastor Bohr has just repented because He's seen 00:51:09.87\00:51:14.78 our goodness, and he has confessed his sin, 00:51:14.81\00:51:17.18 and he has trusted in My merits. 00:51:17.21\00:51:18.95 You know, his life isn't worth ten cents. 00:51:18.98\00:51:21.21 You would have to destroy him. 00:51:21.24\00:51:22.61 But he has claimed Me as his Savior. 00:51:22.64\00:51:24.87 So Father, take My righteousness and place it to his account." 00:51:24.90\00:51:28.22 That's why it's important for Jesus Christ, the righteous One, 00:51:28.87\00:51:32.65 to represent me before God. 00:51:32.68\00:51:34.40 Allow me to read you very quickly a few statements here 00:51:34.60\00:51:37.81 from Ellen White the little book, Faith And Works. 00:51:37.84\00:51:40.24 I recommend that you get it. It's phenomenal. 00:51:40.27\00:51:43.16 Page 106, she says... 00:51:44.18\00:51:47.47 Isn't that good news? 00:52:23.97\00:52:25.37 In the devotional book by Ellen White, The Faith I Live By, 00:52:25.86\00:52:29.24 page 107, she says... 00:52:29.27\00:52:31.78 Is that good news? 00:53:02.05\00:53:03.42 See, Ellen White believed in justification by faith 00:53:03.45\00:53:06.74 that when we receive Jesus, we can have the assurance 00:53:06.94\00:53:11.08 of salvation, not in us, but in Him. 00:53:11.11\00:53:14.67 Let's go to our fourth condition. 00:53:15.29\00:53:17.02 The faith or the trust that we have in Jesus 00:53:18.25\00:53:20.86 must produce good works. 00:53:20.89\00:53:22.64 Now notice we're not saved by works, 00:53:23.60\00:53:26.46 we are saved for works. 00:53:26.49\00:53:28.45 A genuine faith will work. 00:53:29.77\00:53:31.98 A faith that does not work is counterfeit faith. 00:53:32.65\00:53:35.98 Some people say, "Only believe." 00:53:36.41\00:53:38.62 Well the Bible says that the devil believes. 00:53:38.65\00:53:41.63 The demons believe in their brains, in their head, 00:53:41.93\00:53:45.26 that Jesus died, He was buried, He resurrected, 00:53:45.29\00:53:48.60 and He's in heaven at the right hand of God. 00:53:48.63\00:53:50.79 But if your faith and trust in Jesus does not translate 00:53:50.82\00:53:54.06 into a changed life, it is a counterfeit relationship 00:53:54.09\00:53:57.83 with Christ. 00:53:57.86\00:53:59.23 We read Proverbs 28 verse 13. 00:53:59.29\00:54:01.41 "He who covers his sins will not prosper..." 00:54:01.44\00:54:04.20 John the Baptist said that we're suppose to produce fruits 00:54:11.07\00:54:14.47 that flow from repentance. 00:54:14.83\00:54:16.76 He says, fruits that are meat for repentance. 00:54:16.96\00:54:20.72 That means, fruits that reveal that repentance is real. 00:54:20.75\00:54:24.27 And you know that Jesus once said, "By their faith 00:54:24.30\00:54:27.22 ye shall know them." 00:54:27.25\00:54:28.62 Oh thank you very much. 00:54:29.43\00:54:30.80 Jesus did not say, "By their faith you shall know them." 00:54:30.83\00:54:33.11 He said, "By their..." What? 00:54:33.14\00:54:34.67 "By their fruits you shall know them." 00:54:34.70\00:54:37.27 And James, in James chapter 2... 00:54:37.30\00:54:39.92 And I'm not going to read it because we don't have time. 00:54:39.95\00:54:42.01 James chapter 2 verses 14 through 25. 00:54:42.21\00:54:44.94 There James, the brother of Jesus, who was a half brother. 00:54:45.21\00:54:48.82 A son of Joseph from a previous marriage. 00:54:48.85\00:54:50.88 Because Joseph was married before. 00:54:50.91\00:54:52.71 He says that faith without works is what? 00:54:53.59\00:54:57.08 Faith without works is dead. 00:54:57.11\00:54:58.92 Let me ask you, can a dead faith save you? 00:54:58.95\00:55:01.64 No. 00:55:01.94\00:55:03.31 Now what relationship is there between faith and works? 00:55:03.34\00:55:05.83 Faith is the propelling power, and works follow faith. 00:55:06.45\00:55:11.31 It's like when you start your car and you put it in drive. 00:55:12.47\00:55:15.68 Let me ask you, which wheels move first, 00:55:15.71\00:55:17.42 the front wheels or the back wheels? 00:55:17.45\00:55:19.20 Usually people ask, "Well is it front wheel drive 00:55:20.64\00:55:22.94 or back wheel drive?" 00:55:22.97\00:55:24.34 It doesn't make any difference. 00:55:24.37\00:55:25.74 Because if it's back wheel drive, when the back 00:55:26.12\00:55:28.19 wheels propel, the front wheels follow. 00:55:28.22\00:55:30.77 That's the relationship between faith and works. 00:55:31.09\00:55:33.15 Faith is the propelling power and works are the 00:55:33.18\00:55:36.37 result of the faith. 00:55:36.40\00:55:37.77 And if there are no works, if the life doesn't change, 00:55:37.80\00:55:40.49 if we continue living like the devil, 00:55:40.52\00:55:42.47 how can we say that we are following Jesus Christ 00:55:42.50\00:55:46.15 as our Savior and as our Lord. 00:55:46.18\00:55:48.54 Jesus said that when we are connected to the vine, 00:55:48.57\00:55:51.51 we bear not just fruit. 00:55:51.54\00:55:53.36 We bear what? 00:55:53.39\00:55:54.82 Much fruit. 00:55:54.85\00:55:56.58 And so if our relationship with Jesus does not change our life, 00:55:57.15\00:56:01.31 it is a counterfeit faith. 00:56:01.34\00:56:03.49 So we need to repent, we need to confess, 00:56:03.86\00:56:06.14 we need to trust in the merits of Jesus, 00:56:06.17\00:56:08.19 and we need to have a trust and a faith that 00:56:08.72\00:56:11.17 translates into a changed life. 00:56:11.20\00:56:13.34 Let me mention very briefly the final condition. 00:56:13.63\00:56:16.17 And that is baptism. 00:56:16.20\00:56:18.42 You remember that Peter said, "Repent and be..." What? 00:56:18.45\00:56:22.35 "...be baptized, everyone of you." 00:56:22.38\00:56:24.51 Baptism is a condition for receiving justification. 00:56:24.82\00:56:28.05 As we've noticed, Jesus Christ lived, He died, 00:56:28.51\00:56:33.86 He was buried, and He resurrected. 00:56:33.89\00:56:36.85 Now how am I included in what Jesus did? 00:56:36.88\00:56:40.44 How does God look at me as dead, buried, and resurrected 00:56:40.47\00:56:44.42 in Christ? 00:56:44.45\00:56:45.82 It's through the ceremony of baptism. 00:56:45.85\00:56:48.31 You see, when I am baptized, I am incorporated into Christ. 00:56:48.64\00:56:53.29 In Galatians chapter 3, the apostle Paul says 00:56:53.71\00:56:57.27 that those who have accepted Jesus Christ 00:56:57.30\00:57:00.47 have been baptized into Christ. 00:57:00.50\00:57:02.30 They have put on Jesus Christ. 00:57:02.33\00:57:05.41 And so now because I am in Christ Jesus, 00:57:05.44\00:57:08.75 Jesus comes before the Father and He says, 00:57:08.78\00:57:10.62 "Father, I have a new brother." 00:57:10.65\00:57:12.02 And the Father says, "Oh really, what's his name?" 00:57:13.29\00:57:15.34 "Pastor Bohr." 00:57:15.37\00:57:16.74 And so the Father says, "Oh, Pastor Bohr is your brother? 00:57:16.77\00:57:18.86 Well if he's your brother, he's My son too." 00:57:18.89\00:57:21.45 That's what Jesus meant when He said that we are 00:57:22.98\00:57:25.95 accepted through Him. 00:57:25.98\00:57:27.46
