Hello, and welcome to "His Words Are Life." 00:00:16.39\00:00:18.83 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to 00:00:18.84\00:00:21.01 continue reading together in the Book of Isaiah, 00:00:21.02\00:00:23.86 but let's pray before we start. 00:00:23.87\00:00:26.28 Dear, Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love for us 00:00:26.29\00:00:29.89 and for Your care of us. 00:00:29.90\00:00:31.69 And thank You for the provisions 00:00:31.70\00:00:34.20 that You give to each of us on our journey. 00:00:34.21\00:00:36.79 Thank You for the provision of the word of life right now. 00:00:36.80\00:00:40.12 Please, come and help us to hear and understand 00:00:40.13\00:00:43.52 the message You have for each of us here today. 00:00:43.53\00:00:45.83 We love You so much, and thank You for loving us, amen. 00:00:45.84\00:00:50.17 We're reading in the Book of Isaiah in Chapter 36, 00:00:50.18\00:00:53.59 and when we were last together, 00:00:53.60\00:00:55.43 we've begun an account where the king of Assyria 00:00:55.44\00:00:59.19 had sent his representative Rabshakeh unto King Hezekiah. 00:00:59.20\00:01:04.42 And we're in the middle of a dialogue 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.13 where Rabshakeh is delivering a message to Hezekiah. 00:01:07.14\00:01:11.00 And we're going to pick up in Isaiah 36 verse 7. 00:01:11.01\00:01:18.02 "But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God, 00:01:18.03\00:01:21.57 is it not he, whose high places 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.35 and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, 00:01:24.36\00:01:27.77 and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 00:01:27.78\00:01:30.09 Ye shall worship before this altar? 00:01:30.10\00:01:32.45 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, 00:01:32.46\00:01:35.12 to my master the king of Assyria, 00:01:35.13\00:01:37.62 and I will give thee two thousand horses, 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.63 if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them. 00:01:40.64\00:01:44.96 How then wilt thou turn away the face 00:01:44.97\00:01:46.35 of one captain of the least of my master's servants, 00:01:46.36\00:01:49.62 and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 00:01:49.63\00:01:53.23 And am I now come up without the Lord 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.83 against this land to destroy it? 00:01:55.84\00:01:57.74 The Lord said unto me, 00:01:57.75\00:01:59.21 Go up against this land, and destroy it. 00:01:59.22\00:02:03.28 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, 00:02:03.29\00:02:08.39 Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants 00:02:08.40\00:02:10.22 in the Syrian language, for we understand it. 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.43 And speak not to us in the Jews' language, 00:02:13.44\00:02:16.11 in the ears of the people that are on the wall. 00:02:16.12\00:02:19.29 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master 00:02:19.30\00:02:22.61 and to thee to speak these words? 00:02:22.62\00:02:25.37 Hath he not sent me to the men 00:02:25.38\00:02:26.67 that sit upon the wall, 00:02:26.68\00:02:28.13 that they may eat their own dung, 00:02:28.14\00:02:29.75 and drink their own piss with you? 00:02:29.76\00:02:32.27 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice 00:02:32.28\00:02:35.49 in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words 00:02:35.50\00:02:38.21 to the great king, the king of Assyria. 00:02:38.22\00:02:41.08 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you, 00:02:41.09\00:02:44.59 for he shall not be able to deliver you. 00:02:44.60\00:02:47.78 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, 00:02:47.79\00:02:50.29 saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, 00:02:50.30\00:02:53.12 this city shall not be delivered 00:02:53.13\00:02:54.66 into the hand of the king of Assyria. 00:02:54.67\00:02:56.74 Hearken not to Hezekiah, 00:02:56.75\00:02:58.45 for thus saith the king of Assyria, 00:02:58.46\00:03:00.70 Make an agreement with me by a present, 00:03:00.71\00:03:03.60 and come out to me, and eat ye every one of his vine, 00:03:03.61\00:03:07.07 and every one of his fig tree, 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.14 and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern. 00:03:08.15\00:03:10.55 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, 00:03:10.56\00:03:13.79 a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 00:03:13.80\00:03:17.98 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, 00:03:17.99\00:03:21.01 saying, the Lord will deliver us. 00:03:21.02\00:03:24.05 Hath any of the Gods of the nations delivered his land 00:03:24.06\00:03:27.73 out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 00:03:27.74\00:03:30.09 Where are the Gods of Hamath and Arphad? 00:03:30.10\00:03:32.86 Where are the Gods of Sepharvaim? 00:03:32.87\00:03:35.89 And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 00:03:35.90\00:03:39.10 Who are they among all the Gods of these lands, 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.33 that have delivered their land out of my hand, 00:03:41.34\00:03:43.55 that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? 00:03:43.56\00:03:47.67 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word, 00:03:47.68\00:03:51.23 for the king's commandment was saying, Answer him not. 00:03:51.24\00:03:56.26 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, 00:03:56.27\00:03:59.47 that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, 00:03:59.48\00:04:02.59 and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.22 to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, 00:04:06.23\00:04:09.13 and told him the words of Rabshakeh. 00:04:09.14\00:04:13.34 Continuing with the story in Isaiah Chapter 37, 00:04:13.35\00:04:16.91 this is the King James Version. 00:04:16.92\00:04:20.23 And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, 00:04:20.24\00:04:24.05 that he rent his clothes, 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.54 and covered himself with sackcloth, 00:04:25.55\00:04:27.94 and went into the house of the Lord. 00:04:27.95\00:04:31.26 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.70 and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests 00:04:33.71\00:04:37.23 covered with sackcloth, 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.37 unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 00:04:39.38\00:04:44.10 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, 00:04:44.11\00:04:47.20 This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, 00:04:47.21\00:04:50.89 and of blasphemy, 00:04:50.90\00:04:52.83 for the children are come to the birth, 00:04:52.84\00:04:54.52 and there is not strength to bring forth. 00:04:54.53\00:04:57.16 It may be the Lord thy God 00:04:57.17\00:04:59.20 will hear the words of Rabshakeh, 00:04:59.21\00:05:01.55 whom the king of Assyria his master 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.29 hath sent to reproach the living God, 00:05:03.30\00:05:05.59 and will reprove the words which the Lord 00:05:05.60\00:05:07.51 thy God hath heard, wherefore lift up thy prayer 00:05:07.52\00:05:11.20 for the remnant that is left. 00:05:11.21\00:05:13.91 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 00:05:13.92\00:05:17.72 And Isaiah said unto them, 00:05:17.73\00:05:19.78 Thus shall ye say unto your master, 00:05:19.79\00:05:23.19 Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words 00:05:23.20\00:05:27.84 that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants 00:05:27.85\00:05:30.69 of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 00:05:30.70\00:05:34.32 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, 00:05:34.33\00:05:38.45 and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land, 00:05:38.46\00:05:42.62 and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. 00:05:42.63\00:05:48.00 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria 00:05:48.01\00:05:51.17 warring against Libnah, for he had heard 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.86 that he was departed from Lachish. 00:05:53.87\00:05:56.62 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, 00:05:56.63\00:06:01.00 He is come forth to make war with thee. 00:06:01.01\00:06:03.27 And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah 00:06:03.28\00:06:05.53 saying, Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, 00:06:05.54\00:06:08.31 saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, 00:06:08.32\00:06:11.99 deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.93 into the hand of the king of Assyria. 00:06:14.94\00:06:17.40 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria 00:06:17.41\00:06:20.20 have done to all lands by destroying them utterly, 00:06:20.21\00:06:23.49 and shalt thou be delivered? 00:06:23.50\00:06:26.05 Have the Gods of the nations delivered them 00:06:26.06\00:06:28.00 which my fathers have destroyed, 00:06:28.01\00:06:30.05 as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, 00:06:30.06\00:06:32.97 and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 00:06:32.98\00:06:36.56 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, 00:06:36.57\00:06:39.67 and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, 00:06:39.68\00:06:42.09 Hena, and Ivah? 00:06:42.10\00:06:44.64 And Hezekiah received the letter 00:06:44.65\00:06:46.85 from the hand of the messengers, and read it. 00:06:46.86\00:06:50.92 And Hezekiah went up unto the house of the Lord, 00:06:50.93\00:06:54.45 and spread it before the Lord. 00:06:54.46\00:06:57.23 And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying, 00:06:57.24\00:07:00.03 O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, 00:07:00.04\00:07:03.66 that dwellest between the cherubims, 00:07:03.67\00:07:06.43 thou art the God, even thou alone, 00:07:06.44\00:07:09.62 of all the kingdoms of the earth. 00:07:09.63\00:07:11.80 Thou hast made heaven and earth. 00:07:11.81\00:07:14.30 Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear, 00:07:14.31\00:07:18.21 open thine eyes, O Lord, and see. 00:07:18.22\00:07:21.46 And hear all the words of Sennacherib, 00:07:21.47\00:07:23.62 which hath sent to reproach the living God. 00:07:23.63\00:07:27.54 Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria 00:07:27.55\00:07:30.12 have laid waste all the nations, 00:07:30.13\00:07:32.17 and their countries. 00:07:32.18\00:07:33.82 And have cast their Gods into the fire, 00:07:33.83\00:07:36.48 for they were no Gods, but the work of men's hands, 00:07:36.49\00:07:39.47 wood and stone, therefore they have destroyed them. 00:07:39.48\00:07:43.29 Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, 00:07:43.30\00:07:48.18 that all the kingdoms of the earth may know 00:07:48.19\00:07:51.11 that thou art the Lord, even thou only. 00:07:51.12\00:07:56.70 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, 00:07:56.71\00:07:59.99 saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, 00:08:00.00\00:08:03.92 Whereas thou hast prayed to me 00:08:03.93\00:08:05.65 against Sennacherib king of Assyria. 00:08:05.66\00:08:08.35 This is the word which the Lord 00:08:08.36\00:08:09.62 hath spoken concerning him, the virgin, 00:08:09.63\00:08:14.19 the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, 00:08:14.20\00:08:16.32 and laughed thee to scorn, the daughter of Jerusalem 00:08:16.33\00:08:20.27 hath shaken her head at thee. 00:08:20.28\00:08:22.63 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? 00:08:22.64\00:08:25.76 And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, 00:08:25.77\00:08:29.11 and lifted up thine eyes on high? 00:08:29.12\00:08:31.87 Even against the Holy One of Israel. 00:08:31.88\00:08:35.87 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, 00:08:35.88\00:08:38.81 and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots 00:08:38.82\00:08:41.31 am I come up to the height of the mountains, 00:08:41.32\00:08:42.94 to the sides of Lebanon, 00:08:42.95\00:08:44.40 and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, 00:08:44.41\00:08:46.24 and the choice fir trees thereof, 00:08:46.25\00:08:47.44 and I will enter into the height of his border, 00:08:47.45\00:08:49.08 and the forest of his Carmel. 00:08:49.09\00:08:51.41 I have digged, and drunk water, 00:08:51.42\00:08:53.17 and with the sole of my feet have I dried up 00:08:53.18\00:08:55.18 all the rivers of the besieged places. 00:08:55.19\00:08:59.19 Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it, 00:08:59.20\00:09:03.15 and of ancient times, that I have formed it? 00:09:03.16\00:09:05.97 Now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay 00:09:05.98\00:09:09.19 waste defensed cities into ruinous heaps. 00:09:09.20\00:09:12.67 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, 00:09:12.68\00:09:17.58 they were dismayed and confounded, 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.33 they were as the grass of the field, 00:09:19.34\00:09:20.84 and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, 00:09:20.85\00:09:23.17 and as corn blasted before it be grown up. 00:09:23.18\00:09:27.15 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, 00:09:27.16\00:09:30.16 and thy coming in, and thy rage against me. 00:09:30.17\00:09:33.93 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.16 is come up into mine ears, 00:09:36.17\00:09:37.76 therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, 00:09:37.77\00:09:41.23 and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back 00:09:41.24\00:09:46.13 by the way by which thou camest. 00:09:46.14\00:09:49.57 And this shall be a sign unto thee, 00:09:49.58\00:09:51.63 Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself, 00:09:51.64\00:09:56.44 and the second year that which springeth of the same, 00:09:56.45\00:09:59.91 and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, 00:09:59.92\00:10:04.12 and eat the fruit thereof. 00:10:04.13\00:10:06.82 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah 00:10:06.83\00:10:09.97 shall again take root downward, 00:10:09.98\00:10:12.68 and bear fruit upward. 00:10:12.69\00:10:15.44 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, 00:10:15.45\00:10:18.42 and they that escape out of mount Zion. 00:10:18.43\00:10:21.96 The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this. 00:10:21.97\00:10:26.43 Therefore thus saith the Lord 00:10:26.44\00:10:28.49 concerning the king of Assyria, 00:10:28.50\00:10:30.76 He shall not come into this city, 00:10:30.77\00:10:33.22 nor shoot an arrow there, 00:10:33.23\00:10:35.67 nor come before it with shields, 00:10:35.68\00:10:37.90 nor cast a bank against it. 00:10:37.91\00:10:40.89 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, 00:10:40.90\00:10:45.53 and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord. 00:10:45.54\00:10:49.16 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, 00:10:49.17\00:10:54.84 and for my servant David's sake. 00:10:54.85\00:10:58.61 Then the angel of the Lord went forth, 00:10:58.62\00:11:01.01 and smote in the camp of the Assyrians 00:11:01.02\00:11:03.82 a hundred and fourscore and five thousand. 00:11:03.83\00:11:08.02 When they arose early in the morning, 00:11:08.03\00:11:09.87 behold, they were all dead corpses. 00:11:09.88\00:11:13.65 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, 00:11:13.66\00:11:16.19 and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.62 And it came to pass, 00:11:19.63\00:11:21.03 as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his God, 00:11:21.04\00:11:25.21 that Adrammelech and Sharezer 00:11:25.22\00:11:27.85 his sons smote him with the sword, 00:11:27.86\00:11:31.43 and they escaped into the land of Armenia. 00:11:31.44\00:11:35.02 And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead." 00:11:35.03\00:11:40.77 Continuing in Isaiah Chapter 38, 00:11:40.78\00:11:43.74 this is the King James Version. 00:11:43.75\00:11:47.06 "In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. 00:11:47.07\00:11:51.40 And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, 00:11:51.41\00:11:54.49 and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, 00:11:54.50\00:11:57.57 Set thine house in order, 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.66 for thou shalt die, and not live. 00:11:59.67\00:12:03.55 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, 00:12:03.56\00:12:06.98 and prayed unto the Lord. 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.48 And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, 00:12:09.49\00:12:14.10 how I have walked before thee in truth 00:12:14.11\00:12:17.08 and with a perfect heart, and have done that 00:12:17.09\00:12:19.39 which is good in thy sight. 00:12:19.40\00:12:21.95 And Hezekiah wept sore. 00:12:21.96\00:12:25.37 Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying. 00:12:25.38\00:12:28.30 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, 00:12:28.31\00:12:32.02 the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, 00:12:32.03\00:12:36.26 I have seen thy tears, behold, 00:12:36.27\00:12:39.60 I will add unto thy days fifteen years. 00:12:39.61\00:12:44.09 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand 00:12:44.10\00:12:46.83 of the king of Assyria. 00:12:46.84\00:12:48.38 And I will defend this city. 00:12:48.39\00:12:51.62 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, 00:12:51.63\00:12:54.32 that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken. 00:12:54.33\00:12:57.35 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, 00:12:57.36\00:13:01.83 which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, 00:13:01.84\00:13:05.22 ten degrees backward. 00:13:05.23\00:13:07.61 So the sun returned ten degrees, 00:13:07.62\00:13:10.80 by which degrees it was gone down. 00:13:10.81\00:13:14.84 The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, 00:13:14.85\00:13:16.64 when he had been sick, 00:13:16.65\00:13:18.06 and was recovered of his sickness. 00:13:18.07\00:13:21.86 I was in the cutting off of my days, 00:13:21.87\00:13:24.62 I shall go to the gates of the grave. 00:13:24.63\00:13:28.27 I am deprived of the residue of my years. 00:13:28.28\00:13:31.98 I said, I shall not see the Lord, 00:13:31.99\00:13:34.30 even the Lord, in the land of the living. 00:13:34.31\00:13:37.09 I shall behold man no more 00:13:37.10\00:13:38.64 with the inhabitants of the world. 00:13:38.65\00:13:40.81 Mine age is departed, and is removed 00:13:40.82\00:13:43.56 from me as a shepherd's tent. 00:13:43.57\00:13:46.18 I have cut off like a weaver my life, 00:13:46.19\00:13:49.86 he will cut me off with pining sickness, 00:13:49.87\00:13:52.47 from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. 00:13:52.48\00:13:56.92 I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, 00:13:56.93\00:13:59.12 so will he break all my bones, 00:13:59.13\00:14:01.49 from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. 00:14:01.50\00:14:05.08 Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter. 00:14:05.09\00:14:09.06 I did mourn as a dove, 00:14:09.07\00:14:11.52 mine eyes fail with looking upward, 00:14:11.53\00:14:13.95 O Lord, I am oppressed, undertake for me. 00:14:13.96\00:14:18.79 What shall I say? He hath both spoken unto me, 00:14:18.80\00:14:22.40 and himself hath done it. 00:14:22.41\00:14:23.96 I shall go softly all my years 00:14:23.97\00:14:27.01 in the bitterness of my soul. 00:14:27.02\00:14:29.86 O Lord, by these things men live, 00:14:29.87\00:14:33.83 and in all these things is the life of my spirit, 00:14:33.84\00:14:38.03 so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live." 00:14:38.04\00:14:42.50
