Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life. 00:00:14.99\00:00:17.45 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and before we read, let's pray together. 00:00:17.48\00:00:20.65 Dear God in heaven, thank you for bringing us safely again 00:00:20.68\00:00:27.51 to this time together where we can pause from all of the 00:00:27.54\00:00:32.65 different things that we have going on and just sit 00:00:32.68\00:00:35.50 in your presence and listen to your word. 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.36 Please send the Holy Spirit to bring understanding 00:00:37.39\00:00:40.23 to our hearts. Thank you for hearing our prayer. Amen. 00:00:40.26\00:00:43.45 We are reading in the book of Job. Job and his 3 friends 00:00:43.48\00:00:48.68 are having an ongoing discussion about pain and trial and 00:00:48.71\00:00:54.55 suffering that come into the life of someone who 00:00:54.58\00:00:57.41 was obeying God and walking with him. Job is speaking. 00:00:57.44\00:01:01.13 We're starting in chapter 29, with verse 5. 00:01:01.16\00:01:05.26 And Job has just begun by saying "Oh that it were with me still 00:01:05.29\00:01:10.64 the way it was when God was kind to me and had preserved me, 00:01:10.67\00:01:15.28 and kept me when his candle shined upon me. 00:01:15.31\00:01:17.82 We pick up Job's speech, beginning in verse 5. 00:01:17.85\00:01:20.82 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children 00:01:20.85\00:01:25.45 were about me. When I washed my steps with butter, 00:01:25.48\00:01:29.60 and the rock poured out rivers of oil; When I went out to the 00:01:29.63\00:01:33.40 gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street! 00:01:33.43\00:01:36.90 The young men saw me and hid themselves: and the aged arose, 00:01:36.93\00:01:40.49 and stood up. The princes refrained talking, 00:01:40.52\00:01:43.84 and laid their hand on their mouth. The nobles held their 00:01:43.87\00:01:46.98 peace, and the tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. 00:01:47.01\00:01:49.46 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye 00:01:49.49\00:01:54.03 saw me, it gave witness to me: Because I delivered the poor 00:01:54.06\00:01:58.97 that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help 00:01:59.00\00:02:01.70 him. The blessing of him that was ready to perish 00:02:01.73\00:02:05.06 came upon me and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. 00:02:05.09\00:02:09.14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as 00:02:09.17\00:02:14.54 a robe and a diadem. I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I 00:02:14.57\00:02:19.84 to the lame. I was a father to the poor: and the cause which 00:02:19.87\00:02:23.38 I knew not I searched out. And I brake the jaws of the 00:02:23.41\00:02:27.59 wicked and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. Then I said, 00:02:27.62\00:02:31.87 I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days 00:02:31.90\00:02:35.24 as the sand. My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew 00:02:35.27\00:02:40.01 lay all night upon my branch. My glory was fresh in me, 00:02:40.04\00:02:44.80 and my bow was renewed in my hand. Unto me men gave ear, 00:02:44.83\00:02:50.17 and waited and kept silence at my counsel. After my words 00:02:50.20\00:02:55.57 they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them. 00:02:55.60\00:02:59.34 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their 00:02:59.37\00:03:02.85 mouth wide as for the latter rain. If I laughed on them, 00:03:02.88\00:03:07.11 they believed it not; and the light of my countenance 00:03:07.14\00:03:10.49 they cast not down. I chose out their way, and sat chief, 00:03:10.52\00:03:15.59 and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth 00:03:15.62\00:03:20.90 the mourners. Continuing in Job, chapter 30. 00:03:20.93\00:03:25.12 This is the King James Version. But now they that are younger 00:03:25.15\00:03:31.09 than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have 00:03:31.12\00:03:36.31 disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock. 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.58 Yea, whereto might the strength of their hands profit me, 00:03:38.61\00:03:42.63 in whom old age was perished? For want and famine they were 00:03:42.66\00:03:48.45 solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time 00:03:48.48\00:03:51.39 desolate and waste. Who cut up mallows by the bushes, 00:03:51.42\00:03:55.82 and juniper roots for their meat. They were driven forth 00:03:55.85\00:03:58.14 from among men, they cried after them as after a thief; 00:03:58.17\00:04:00.67 to dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.81 and in the rocks. Among the bushes they brayed; 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.05 under the nettles they were gathered together. 00:04:06.08\00:04:08.14 They were children of fools, yea children of base men: 00:04:08.17\00:04:12.19 they were viler than the earth. And now am I their song, yea, 00:04:12.22\00:04:18.59 I am their byword. They abhor me, they flee far from me, 00:04:18.62\00:04:23.73 and spare not to spit in my face. Because he hath loosed 00:04:23.76\00:04:28.79 my cord, and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle 00:04:28.82\00:04:32.62 before me. Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away 00:04:32.65\00:04:37.77 my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their 00:04:37.80\00:04:40.30 destruction. They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, 00:04:40.33\00:04:45.69 they have no helper. They came upon me as a wide breaking in 00:04:45.72\00:04:50.81 of waters: in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me. 00:04:50.84\00:04:54.33 Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: 00:04:54.36\00:04:59.51 and my welfare passeth away as a cloud. And now my soul is 00:04:59.54\00:05:05.03 poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold 00:05:05.06\00:05:08.85 upon me. My bones are pierced in me in the night season: 00:05:08.88\00:05:12.98 and my sinews take no rest. By the great force of my disease 00:05:13.01\00:05:18.87 is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar 00:05:18.90\00:05:23.20 of my coat. He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like 00:05:23.23\00:05:28.96 dust and ashes. I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: 00:05:28.99\00:05:33.46 I stand up, and thou regardest me not. Thou art become cruel 00:05:33.49\00:05:38.68 to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me. 00:05:38.71\00:05:43.03 Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, 00:05:43.06\00:05:48.03 and dissolvest my substance. For I know that thou wilt bring 00:05:48.06\00:05:53.03 me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. 00:05:53.06\00:05:56.52 Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave, 00:05:56.55\00:05:59.49 though they cry in his destruction. 00:05:59.52\00:06:02.91 Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul 00:06:02.94\00:06:08.06 grieved for the poor? When I looked for good, 00:06:08.09\00:06:12.31 then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, 00:06:12.34\00:06:16.01 there came darkness. My bowels boiled, and rested not: 00:06:16.04\00:06:20.96 the days of affliction prevented me. 00:06:20.99\00:06:24.14 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried 00:06:24.17\00:06:29.90 in the congregation. I am a brother to dragons, 00:06:29.93\00:06:33.59 and a companion to owls. My skin is black upon me, and my bones 00:06:33.62\00:06:39.59 are burned with heat. My harp also is turned to mourning, 00:06:39.62\00:06:43.90 and my organ into the voice of them that weep. 00:06:43.93\00:06:47.59 We're continuing with Job, chapter 31. This is 00:06:47.62\00:06:51.05 the King James Version. - I made a covenant with mine eyes 00:06:51.08\00:06:55.95 why then should I think upon a maid? For what portion of God 00:06:55.98\00:07:00.92 is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty 00:07:00.95\00:07:03.62 from on high? Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange 00:07:03.65\00:07:07.98 punishment to the workers of iniquity? Doth not he see 00:07:08.01\00:07:12.83 my ways, and count all my steps? If I have walked with vanity, 00:07:12.86\00:07:18.19 If my foot hath hasted to deceit; let me be weighed in 00:07:18.22\00:07:22.89 an even balance, that God may know mine integrity. 00:07:22.92\00:07:26.50 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked 00:07:26.53\00:07:30.62 after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands; 00:07:30.65\00:07:34.54 Then let me sow, and another eat; 00:07:34.57\00:07:37.47 yea, let my offspring be rooted out. If mine heart have been 00:07:37.50\00:07:42.91 deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor's 00:07:42.94\00:07:46.29 door; then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow 00:07:46.32\00:07:50.46 down upon her. For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an 00:07:50.49\00:07:54.54 iniquity to be punished by the judges. For it is a fire that 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.59 consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase 00:07:58.62\00:08:01.99 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my 00:08:02.02\00:08:07.08 maidservant, when they contended with me; 00:08:07.11\00:08:09.17 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth 00:08:09.20\00:08:13.41 what shall I answer him? Did not he that made me in the womb 00:08:13.44\00:08:18.55 make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? 00:08:18.58\00:08:21.64 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused 00:08:21.67\00:08:26.68 the eyes of the widow to fail; Or have eaten my morsel myself 00:08:26.71\00:08:31.48 alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.88 For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, 00:08:33.91\00:08:37.63 and I have guided her from my mother's womb; 00:08:37.66\00:08:39.38 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, 00:08:39.41\00:08:43.83 or any poor without covering; If his loins have not blessed 00:08:43.86\00:08:47.32 me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; 00:08:47.35\00:08:50.41 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, 00:08:50.44\00:08:53.55 when I saw my help in the gate: Then let mine arm fall from my 00:08:53.58\00:08:58.29 shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. 00:08:58.32\00:09:00.83 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of 00:09:00.86\00:09:06.30 his highness I could not endure. If I have made gold my hope, 00:09:06.34\00:09:11.77 or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; 00:09:11.80\00:09:16.07 If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, 00:09:16.10\00:09:20.17 and because mine hand had gotten much; If I beheld the sun when 00:09:20.20\00:09:25.40 it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; and my heart 00:09:25.43\00:09:29.00 hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand: 00:09:29.03\00:09:34.30 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: 00:09:34.33\00:09:38.07 for I should have denied the God that is above. If I rejoiced 00:09:38.10\00:09:42.76 at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself 00:09:42.79\00:09:45.78 when evil found him: Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin 00:09:45.81\00:09:50.98 by wishing a curse to his soul. If the men of my tabernacle 00:09:51.01\00:09:56.61 said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied. 00:09:56.64\00:10:00.99 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my 00:10:01.02\00:10:04.80 doors to the traveler. If I covered my transgressions 00:10:04.83\00:10:09.40 as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom: Did I fear a great 00:10:09.43\00:10:15.30 multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, 00:10:15.33\00:10:18.46 that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? 00:10:18.49\00:10:21.24 Oh, that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, 00:10:21.27\00:10:26.85 that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary 00:10:26.88\00:10:30.83 had written a book. Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, 00:10:30.86\00:10:34.36 and bind it as a crown to me. I would declare unto him 00:10:34.39\00:10:37.86 the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. 00:10:37.89\00:10:41.96 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise 00:10:41.99\00:10:46.67 thereof complain; If I have eaten the fruits thereof without 00:10:46.70\00:10:49.77 money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: 00:10:49.80\00:10:53.43 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of 00:10:53.46\00:10:58.74 barley. The words of Job are ended. 00:10:58.77\00:11:02.37 We're continuing now in Job chapter 32, 00:11:02.40\00:11:06.38 and this is the King James Version. 00:11:06.41\00:11:07.94 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was 00:11:07.97\00:11:16.15 righteous in his own eyes. Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu 00:11:16.18\00:11:22.98 the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: 00:11:23.01\00:11:27.37 against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified 00:11:27.40\00:11:31.94 himself rather than God. Also against his three friends 00:11:31.97\00:11:36.09 was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, 00:11:36.12\00:11:38.61 and yet had condemned Job. Now Elihu had waited till Job had 00:11:38.64\00:11:44.37 spoken, because they were elder than he. When Elihu saw that 00:11:44.40\00:11:49.41 there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his 00:11:49.44\00:11:52.61 wrath was kindled. And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite 00:11:52.64\00:11:57.64 answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore 00:11:57.67\00:12:03.48 I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion. I said, Days 00:12:03.51\00:12:09.17 should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. 00:12:09.20\00:12:12.52 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration 00:12:12.55\00:12:16.82 of the Almighty giveth them understanding. 00:12:16.85\00:12:19.33 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand 00:12:19.36\00:12:24.21 judgment. Therefore I said, Hearken to me; 00:12:24.24\00:12:27.64 I also will shew mine opinion. Behold, I waited for your words; 00:12:27.67\00:12:33.65 I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out 00:12:33.68\00:12:37.35 what to say. Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was 00:12:37.38\00:12:41.77 none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words: 00:12:41.80\00:12:45.45 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: 00:12:45.48\00:12:48.78 God thrusteth him down, not man. Now he hath not directed 00:12:48.81\00:12:54.65 his words against me: neither will I answer him with your 00:12:54.68\00:12:57.25 speeches. They were amazed, they answered no more: 00:12:57.28\00:13:02.01 they left off speaking. When I had waited, for they spake not, 00:13:02.04\00:13:07.94 but stood still, and answered no more; I said, I will answer also 00:13:07.97\00:13:12.56 my part, I also will shew my opinion. For I am full of matter 00:13:12.59\00:13:17.54 the spirit within me constraineth me. 00:13:17.57\00:13:20.27 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is 00:13:20.30\00:13:23.99 ready to burst like new bottles. I will speak, that I may be 00:13:24.02\00:13:28.54 refreshed: I will open my lips and answer. Let me not, I pray 00:13:28.57\00:13:32.65 you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering 00:13:32.68\00:13:35.76 titles unto man. For I know not to give flattering titles; 00:13:35.79\00:13:39.84 in so doing my maker would soon take me away. 00:13:39.87\00:13:43.73 We're continuing with Job, chapter 33. 00:13:43.76\00:13:47.11 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken 00:13:47.14\00:13:51.71 to all my words. Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue 00:13:51.74\00:13:56.55 hath spoken in my mouth. My words shall be of the 00:13:56.58\00:13:59.97 uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge 00:14:00.00\00:14:03.07 clearly. The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the 00:14:03.10\00:14:07.26 Almighty hath given me life. If thou canst answer me, 00:14:07.29\00:14:11.45 set thy words in order before me, stand up. Behold, 00:14:11.48\00:14:15.20 I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed 00:14:15.23\00:14:21.36 out of the clay. Behold, my terror shall not make thee 00:14:21.39\00:14:25.49 afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee. 00:14:25.52\00:14:28.31 Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard 00:14:28.34\00:14:32.12 the voice of thy words, saying, I am clean without transgression 00:14:32.15\00:14:35.94 I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. 00:14:35.97\00:14:39.86
