Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.39\00:00:17.70 We're going to continue today in reading the story of Job. 00:00:17.73\00:00:21.28 But before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:21.31\00:00:23.26 Dear heavenly father, please send the Holy Spirit now, 00:00:23.29\00:00:28.80 to be with us as we read these words, and may we each hear 00:00:28.83\00:00:33.44 from them the lessons you have for us today. 00:00:33.47\00:00:36.02 We love you so much. Thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:36.05\00:00:39.71 Job has lost his health, his children, his wealth, 00:00:39.74\00:00:48.36 the support of his wife, the support of his friends. 00:00:48.39\00:00:52.66 Everything is against him, and yet Job is arguing that he has 00:00:52.69\00:00:59.76 lived a life, blameless before God. Now his friends are 00:00:59.79\00:01:04.43 arguing that the only possible cause for all that has come to 00:01:04.46\00:01:09.54 Job's life is that he has some secret sin, and they're 00:01:09.57\00:01:12.75 entreating him to confess this and turn from it. And they're 00:01:12.78\00:01:15.80 going back and forth and discussing the role of tragedy 00:01:15.83\00:01:19.46 and suffering in the life of someone who serves the Lord. 00:01:19.49\00:01:22.88 What causes it? Why is it there? There's a lot of questions, 00:01:22.91\00:01:26.98 a lot of arguments, a lot of answers. We're picking up 00:01:27.01\00:01:30.16 the discussion in Job, chapter 22, as his friend 00:01:30.19\00:01:35.84 Eliphaz is saying to him, If you will return to the Lord, 00:01:35.87\00:01:39.89 he will put away your sin. We'll begin reading now in verse 25. 00:01:39.92\00:01:46.18 This is the King James Version. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy 00:01:46.21\00:01:50.91 defense, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.85 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, 00:01:52.88\00:01:55.81 and thou shalt lift up thy face unto God. Thou shalt make thy 00:01:55.84\00:01:59.23 prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay 00:01:59.26\00:02:01.56 thy vows. Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be 00:02:01.59\00:02:04.78 established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. 00:02:04.81\00:02:07.94 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting 00:02:07.97\00:02:12.42 up; and he shall save the humble person. He shall deliver the 00:02:12.45\00:02:16.89 island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness 00:02:16.92\00:02:21.06 of thine hands. We're continuing in Job, chapter 23. 00:02:21.09\00:02:25.41 This is the King James Version. Then Job answered and said, 00:02:25.44\00:02:29.79 even today is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier 00:02:29.82\00:02:33.78 than my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him! 00:02:33.81\00:02:37.60 that I might come even to his seat! I would order my cause 00:02:37.63\00:02:42.32 before him! and fill my mouth with arguments. 00:02:42.35\00:02:45.47 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand 00:02:45.50\00:02:48.50 what he would say unto me. Will he plead against me with his 00:02:48.53\00:02:51.97 great power? No; but he would put strength in me. 00:02:52.00\00:02:55.57 There the righteous might dispute with him; 00:02:55.60\00:02:58.26 so should I be delivered for ever from my judge. 00:02:58.29\00:03:00.56 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I 00:03:00.59\00:03:05.84 cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, 00:03:05.87\00:03:09.56 but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand 00:03:09.59\00:03:12.43 that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: 00:03:12.46\00:03:17.59 when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. 00:03:17.62\00:03:24.01 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, 00:03:24.04\00:03:29.06 and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment 00:03:29.09\00:03:32.75 of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than 00:03:32.78\00:03:37.45 my necessary food. But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? 00:03:37.48\00:03:42.89 and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. 00:03:42.92\00:03:46.46 For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: 00:03:46.49\00:03:50.23 and many such things are with him. Therefore am I troubled 00:03:50.26\00:03:54.09 at his presence: when I consider. I am afraid of him. 00:03:54.12\00:03:57.42 For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me: 00:03:57.45\00:04:01.82 Because I was not cut off before the darkness, 00:04:01.85\00:04:04.91 neither hath he covered the darkness from my face. 00:04:04.94\00:04:07.45 We're continuing with Job, chapter 24, and this is the 00:04:07.48\00:04:11.51 King James Version. Why, seeing times are not hidden from the 00:04:11.54\00:04:16.04 Almighty, do they that know him not see his days? 00:04:16.07\00:04:19.44 Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, 00:04:19.47\00:04:24.33 and feed thereof. They drive away the ass of the fatherless, 00:04:24.36\00:04:27.45 they take the widow's ox for a pledge. They turn the needy 00:04:27.48\00:04:30.95 out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together. 00:04:30.98\00:04:34.26 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go thy forth to their 00:04:34.29\00:04:39.64 work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food 00:04:39.67\00:04:44.81 for them and for their children. They reap every one his corn 00:04:44.84\00:04:48.80 in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked. 00:04:48.83\00:04:51.11 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have 00:04:51.14\00:04:55.76 no covering in the cold. They wet with the showers of the 00:04:55.79\00:04:58.99 mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. 00:04:59.02\00:05:02.88 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge 00:05:02.91\00:05:07.15 of the poor. They cause him to go naked without clothing, 00:05:07.18\00:05:10.31 and they take away the sheaf from the hungry; 00:05:10.34\00:05:12.24 which make oil within their walls, and tread their wine 00:05:12.27\00:05:14.81 presses, and suffer thirst. Men groan from out of the city, 00:05:14.84\00:05:19.94 and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not 00:05:19.97\00:05:23.82 folly to them. They are of those that rebel against the light; 00:05:23.85\00:05:28.23 they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. 00:05:28.26\00:05:31.83 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and 00:05:31.86\00:05:35.35 needy, and in the night is as a thief. The eye also of the 00:05:35.38\00:05:41.13 adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall 00:05:41.16\00:05:43.93 see me and disguiseth his face. In the dark they dig through 00:05:43.96\00:05:49.20 houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: 00:05:49.23\00:05:52.33 they know not the light. For the morning is to them even as the 00:05:52.36\00:05:57.56 shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors 00:05:57.59\00:06:01.32 of the shadow of death. He is swift as the waters; 00:06:01.35\00:06:04.87 their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way 00:06:04.90\00:06:08.69 of the vineyards. Drought and heat consume the snow waters: 00:06:08.72\00:06:13.17 so doth the grave those which have sinned. 00:06:13.20\00:06:17.20 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; 00:06:17.23\00:06:21.99 he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken 00:06:22.02\00:06:27.00 as a tree. He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: 00:06:27.03\00:06:31.98 and doeth not good to the widow. He draweth also the mighty 00:06:32.01\00:06:36.01 with his power: he riseth up and no man is sure of his life. 00:06:36.04\00:06:39.74 though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; 00:06:39.77\00:06:43.51 yet his eyes are upon their ways. They are exalted for a 00:06:43.54\00:06:48.32 little while, but are gone and brought low; 00:06:48.35\00:06:51.04 they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off 00:06:51.07\00:06:54.13 as the tops of the ears of corn. And if it be not so now, 00:06:54.16\00:06:59.28 who will make me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing? 00:06:59.31\00:07:04.47 Continuing with Job, chapter 25. This is the King James Version. 00:07:04.50\00:07:08.91 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite and said, Dominion and fear 00:07:08.94\00:07:15.18 are with him, he maketh peace in his high places. 00:07:15.21\00:07:17.94 Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not 00:07:17.97\00:07:22.42 his light arise? How then can man be justified with God? 00:07:22.45\00:07:28.15 Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? 00:07:28.18\00:07:31.76 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars 00:07:31.79\00:07:36.86 are not pure in his sight. How much less man, that is a worm? 00:07:36.89\00:07:40.69 and the son of man, which is a worm? 00:07:40.72\00:07:43.20 Job, chapter 26. But Job answered and said, 00:07:43.23\00:07:49.24 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest 00:07:49.27\00:07:53.04 thou the arm that hath no strength? 00:07:53.07\00:07:54.90 How has thou counseled him that that hath no wisdom? 00:07:54.93\00:07:58.54 and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is? 00:07:58.57\00:08:02.18 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee? 00:08:02.21\00:08:06.39 Dead things are formed from under the waters, 00:08:06.42\00:08:09.48 and the inhabitants thereof. Hell is naked before him, and 00:08:09.51\00:08:13.16 destruction hath no covering. He stretcheth out the north 00:08:13.19\00:08:15.78 over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. 00:08:15.81\00:08:19.29 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; 00:08:20.38\00:08:22.39 and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the face 00:08:22.42\00:08:27.10 of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. 00:08:27.13\00:08:29.53 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and 00:08:29.56\00:08:32.08 night come to an end. The pillars of heaven tremble 00:08:32.11\00:08:35.63 and are astonished at his reproof. He divideth the sea 00:08:35.66\00:08:40.03 with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through 00:08:40.06\00:08:43.98 the proud. By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; 00:08:44.01\00:08:47.27 his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Lo, these are parts 00:08:47.30\00:08:52.82 of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? 00:08:52.85\00:08:56.48 but the thunder of his power who can understand? 00:08:56.51\00:09:00.96 Continuing in chapter 27, the book of Job, and 00:09:00.99\00:09:05.38 this is the King James Version. Moreover Job continued 00:09:05.41\00:09:09.84 his parable, and said, As God liveth, who hath taken away my 00:09:09.87\00:09:14.97 judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; 00:09:15.00\00:09:18.93 All the while my breath is in me and the spirit of God is in my 00:09:18.96\00:09:22.14 nostrils; My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue 00:09:22.17\00:09:27.64 utter deceit. God forbid that I should justify you: till I die 00:09:27.67\00:09:33.58 I will not remove mine integrity from me. My righteousness 00:09:33.61\00:09:38.77 I hold fast and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach 00:09:38.80\00:09:43.64 me so long as I live. Let mine enemy be as the wicked, 00:09:43.67\00:09:47.35 and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous. 00:09:47.38\00:09:50.20 for what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained 00:09:50.23\00:09:54.29 when God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry when 00:09:54.32\00:09:58.53 trouble cometh upon him? Will he delight himself 00:09:58.56\00:10:01.84 in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? I will teach you 00:10:01.87\00:10:06.44 by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not 00:10:06.47\00:10:11.11 conceal. Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; 00:10:11.14\00:10:16.25 why then are ye thus altogether vain? 00:10:16.28\00:10:18.94 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage 00:10:18.97\00:10:22.97 of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. 00:10:23.00\00:10:26.01 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: 00:10:26.04\00:10:30.12 and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. 00:10:30.15\00:10:33.84 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: 00:10:33.87\00:10:37.22 and his widows shall not weep. Though he heap up silver as the 00:10:37.25\00:10:42.08 dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; He may prepare it, 00:10:42.11\00:10:45.64 but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide 00:10:45.67\00:10:50.87 the silver. He buildeth his house as a moth, 00:10:50.90\00:10:54.92 and as a booth that the keeper maketh. The rich man shall 00:10:54.95\00:10:58.71 lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, 00:10:58.74\00:11:03.53 and he is not. Terrors take hold on him as the waters, 00:11:03.56\00:11:07.59 a tempest stealeth him away in the night. The east wind 00:11:07.62\00:11:10.41 carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm 00:11:10.44\00:11:13.65 hurleth him out of his place. For God shall cast upon him, 00:11:13.68\00:11:17.59 and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. 00:11:17.62\00:11:21.07 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of 00:11:21.10\00:11:25.77 his place. Continuing in the book of Job, chapter 28. 00:11:25.80\00:11:29.68 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold 00:11:29.71\00:11:33.87 where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth, 00:11:33.90\00:11:36.54 and brass is molten out of the stone. He setteth an end to 00:11:36.57\00:11:40.00 darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of 00:11:40.03\00:11:44.26 darkness and the shadow of death. The flood breaketh out 00:11:44.29\00:11:48.01 from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.34 they are dried up, they are gone away from men. As for the earth 00:11:51.37\00:11:55.83 out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up 00:11:55.86\00:11:59.57 as it were fire. The stones of it are the place of sapphires: 00:11:59.60\00:12:04.51 and it hath dust of gold. There is a path which no fowl knoweth 00:12:04.54\00:12:09.97 and which the vulture's eye hath not seen: 00:12:10.00\00:12:12.82 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion 00:12:12.85\00:12:16.63 passed by it. He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; 00:12:16.66\00:12:20.96 he overturneth the mountains by the roots. He cutteth out 00:12:20.99\00:12:24.86 rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. 00:12:24.89\00:12:30.06 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that 00:12:30.09\00:12:34.40 is hid bringeth he forth to light. But where shall wisdom 00:12:34.43\00:12:40.05 be found? and where is the place of understanding? 00:12:40.08\00:12:43.45 Man knoweth not the price therof neither is it found in the land 00:12:43.48\00:12:48.77 of the living. The depth saith, It is not in me: 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.74 and the sea saith, It is not with me. 00:12:52.77\00:12:56.22 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed 00:12:56.25\00:13:00.67 for the price thereof. It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir 00:13:00.70\00:13:05.11 with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. 00:13:05.14\00:13:07.45 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it 00:13:07.48\00:13:12.40 shall not be for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made 00:13:12.43\00:13:16.43 of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above 00:13:16.46\00:13:19.67 rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, 00:13:19.70\00:13:23.41 neither shall it be valued with pure gold. 00:13:23.44\00:13:25.22 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of 00:13:25.25\00:13:29.98 understanding? Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, 00:13:30.01\00:13:33.67 and kept close from the fowls of the air. 00:13:33.70\00:13:35.85 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof 00:13:35.88\00:13:38.77 with our ears. God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth 00:13:38.80\00:13:44.05 the place thereof. For he looketh to the ends of the earth 00:13:44.08\00:13:47.68 and seeth under the whole heaven to make the weight for the winds 00:13:47.71\00:13:51.52 and he weigheth the waters by measure. When he made a decree 00:13:51.55\00:13:55.17 for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder; 00:13:55.20\00:13:57.62 then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, 00:13:57.65\00:14:01.87 and searched it out.
