Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.25\00:00:18.00 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today, 00:00:18.03\00:00:21.14 to read the story of Job. Before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:21.17\00:00:24.89 Dear God, thank you so much for the story and the lesson 00:00:24.92\00:00:31.58 that you have given us in the story of Job. Please, as we hear 00:00:31.61\00:00:37.54 these words, help us to see how in our own life you are there 00:00:37.57\00:00:41.99 for us. And you are bringing us through. And may we also say 00:00:42.02\00:00:46.75 with Job, that although you would slay us, yet will we 00:00:46.78\00:00:50.83 trust you. May our faith remain strong. Be with us now 00:00:50.86\00:00:54.15 as we read. Thank you so much for hearing our prayer. Amen. 00:00:54.18\00:00:57.63 We're in the middle of the conversation that Job is having 00:00:57.66\00:01:02.38 with his three friends who have come to comfort him, 00:01:02.41\00:01:05.76 in the loss of his family, his wealth, and his health. 00:01:05.79\00:01:10.83 And they're having a discussion among the 4 of them about God. 00:01:10.86\00:01:16.49 Each of them are putting forth their opinions. The 3 friends 00:01:16.52\00:01:20.91 are arguing that when calamity comes it is a result of sin 00:01:20.94\00:01:24.98 in our lives. Job is answering differently and yet as they 00:01:25.01\00:01:29.81 ponder these things they realize their questions they're asking 00:01:29.84\00:01:32.54 that they don't know the answers to. We're picking up 00:01:32.57\00:01:36.17 in chapter 13 of the book of Job and Job is speaking. 00:01:36.20\00:01:40.52 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and 00:01:40.55\00:01:45.59 understood it. What ye know, the same do I know also: 00:01:45.62\00:01:49.12 I am not inferior unto you. Surely I would speak to the 00:01:49.15\00:01:52.94 Almighty and I desire to reason with God. But ye are forgers of 00:01:52.97\00:01:57.02 lies, ye are all physicians of no value. O that ye would 00:01:57.05\00:02:00.76 altogether hold you peace! and it should be your wisdom. 00:02:00.79\00:02:04.15 Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my 00:02:04.18\00:02:08.49 lips. Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully 00:02:08.52\00:02:12.60 for him? Will ye accept his person? Will ye contend for God? 00:02:12.63\00:02:16.72 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man 00:02:16.75\00:02:20.55 mocketh another, do ye so mock him? He will surely reprove 00:02:20.58\00:02:25.44 you if ye do secretly accept persons. Shall not his 00:02:25.47\00:02:29.15 excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you? 00:02:29.18\00:02:33.56 Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of 00:02:33.59\00:02:38.33 clay. Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, 00:02:38.36\00:02:43.36 and let come on me what will. Wherefore do I take my flesh 00:02:43.39\00:02:47.81 in my teeth and put my life in mine hand? 00:02:47.84\00:02:50.01 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: 00:02:50.04\00:02:55.01 But I will maintain mine own ways before him. 00:02:55.04\00:02:58.91 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come 00:02:58.94\00:03:03.70 before him. Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with 00:03:03.73\00:03:07.74 your ears. Behold now I have ordered my cause; 00:03:07.77\00:03:10.58 I know that I shall be justified Who is he that will plead 00:03:10.61\00:03:15.55 with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the 00:03:15.58\00:03:19.86 ghost. Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide 00:03:19.89\00:03:25.19 myself from thee. Withdraw thine hand far from me: 00:03:25.22\00:03:30.05 and let not thy dread make me afraid. Then call thou, 00:03:30.08\00:03:35.27 and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me. 00:03:35.30\00:03:37.93 How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my 00:03:37.96\00:03:41.68 transgression and my sin. Wherefore hidest thou thy face, 00:03:41.71\00:03:45.56 and holdest me for thine enemy? Wilt thou break a leaf driven 00:03:45.59\00:03:49.38 to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble? 00:03:49.41\00:03:52.49 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to 00:03:52.52\00:03:57.32 possess the iniquities of my youth. Thou puttest my feet also 00:03:57.35\00:04:00.98 in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; 00:04:01.01\00:04:04.63 thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet. 00:04:04.66\00:04:07.67 And he, as a rotten thing consumeth, 00:04:07.70\00:04:10.50 as a garment that is moth eaten. Continuing in the book of Job, 00:04:10.53\00:04:15.87 chapter 14. And this is the King James Version. 00:04:15.90\00:04:18.12 Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. 00:04:18.15\00:04:24.54 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth also 00:04:24.57\00:04:29.68 as a shadow, and continueth not. And dost thou open thine eyes 00:04:29.71\00:04:33.48 upon such and one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? 00:04:33.51\00:04:36.61 Who can bring a clean thing out of and unclean? not one. 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.87 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are 00:04:40.90\00:04:45.21 with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; 00:04:45.24\00:04:49.25 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, 00:04:49.28\00:04:53.74 as an hireling, his day. For there is hope of a tree, 00:04:53.77\00:04:58.33 if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the 00:04:58.36\00:05:01.94 tender branch thereof will not cease. Thought the root thereof 00:05:01.97\00:05:05.33 wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; 00:05:05.36\00:05:08.49 yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth 00:05:08.52\00:05:12.31 boughs like a plant. But man dieth, and wasteth away: 00:05:12.34\00:05:16.52 yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? 00:05:16.55\00:05:20.33 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth 00:05:20.36\00:05:24.80 and drieth up: So man lieth down, and riseth not: 00:05:24.83\00:05:28.55 til the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, 00:05:28.58\00:05:31.91 nor be raised out of their sleep. O that thou wouldest hide 00:05:31.94\00:05:37.54 me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, 00:05:37.58\00:05:40.90 until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set 00:05:40.94\00:05:44.73 time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? 00:05:44.77\00:05:48.52 all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change 00:05:48.55\00:05:52.90 come. Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: 00:05:52.93\00:05:56.21 thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands. 00:05:56.24\00:05:58.43 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin? 00:05:58.46\00:06:03.51 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up 00:06:03.54\00:06:07.16 mine iniquity. And surely the mountain falling cometh to 00:06:07.19\00:06:11.49 naught, and the rock is removed out of his place. The waters 00:06:11.52\00:06:15.35 wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out 00:06:15.38\00:06:18.95 of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man. 00:06:18.98\00:06:22.37 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: 00:06:22.40\00:06:26.63 thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. 00:06:26.66\00:06:30.40 His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; and they are 00:06:30.43\00:06:34.97 brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. 00:06:35.00\00:06:38.42 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within 00:06:38.45\00:06:42.64 him shall mourn. Continuing in Job, chapter 15. 00:06:42.67\00:06:47.75 This is the King James Version. Then answered Eliphaz 00:06:47.78\00:06:52.58 the Temanite, and said, Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, 00:06:52.61\00:06:58.21 and fill his belly with the east wind? Should he reason with 00:06:58.24\00:07:02.12 unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no 00:07:02.15\00:07:05.49 good? Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer 00:07:05.52\00:07:09.97 before God. For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, 00:07:10.00\00:07:13.35 and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. Thine own mouth 00:07:13.38\00:07:16.18 condemneth thee, and Not I: yea, thine own lips testify against 00:07:16.21\00:07:20.93 thee. Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou 00:07:20.96\00:07:24.35 made before the hills? Hast thou heard the secret of God? 00:07:24.38\00:07:27.98 and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? What knowest thou, 00:07:28.01\00:07:31.86 that we know not? what understandest thou, 00:07:31.89\00:07:34.95 which is not in us? With us are both the gray headed and 00:07:34.98\00:07:40.17 very aged men, much elder than thy father. Are the consolations 00:07:40.20\00:07:44.94 of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? 00:07:44.97\00:07:49.36 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? 00:07:49.39\00:07:52.58 and what do thy eyes wink at, that thou turnest thy spirit 00:07:52.61\00:07:56.07 against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth? 00:07:56.10\00:07:59.09 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born 00:07:59.12\00:08:03.97 of a woman, that he should be righteous? Behold, he putteth 00:08:04.00\00:08:07.41 no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean 00:08:07.44\00:08:09.81 in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, 00:08:09.84\00:08:13.64 which drinketh iniquity like water? I will shew thee, 00:08:13.67\00:08:17.14 hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; 00:08:17.17\00:08:20.54 which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not 00:08:20.57\00:08:23.14 hid it: Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger 00:08:23.17\00:08:26.61 passed among them. The wicked man travaileth with pain all 00:08:26.64\00:08:30.99 his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor 00:08:31.02\00:08:34.62 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the 00:08:34.65\00:08:38.51 destroyer shall come upon him. He believeth not that he shall 00:08:38.54\00:08:42.21 return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. 00:08:42.24\00:08:45.23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? 00:08:45.26\00:08:48.64 he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. 00:08:48.67\00:08:52.67 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; 00:08:52.70\00:08:56.10 they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.57 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strentheneth 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.93 himself against the Almighty. He runneth upon him, 00:09:02.96\00:09:05.80 even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: 00:09:05.83\00:09:08.71 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.66 collops of fat on his flanks. And he dwelleth in desolate 00:09:12.69\00:09:15.75 cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.18 to become heaps. He shall not be rich, neither shall his 00:09:19.21\00:09:23.59 substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection 00:09:23.62\00:09:26.58 thereof upon the earth. He shall not depart out of darkness; 00:09:26.61\00:09:30.09 the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath 00:09:30.12\00:09:33.50 of his mouth shall he go away. Let not him that is deceived 00:09:33.53\00:09:37.91 trust in vanity: for vanity for vanity shall be his recompence. 00:09:37.94\00:09:41.34 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch 00:09:41.37\00:09:44.66 shall not be green. He shall shake off his unripe grape 00:09:44.69\00:09:48.73 as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. 00:09:48.76\00:09:51.48 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, 00:09:51.51\00:09:55.47 and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. 00:09:55.50\00:09:59.29 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, 00:09:59.32\00:10:03.07 and their belly prepareth deceit We're continuing in the book of 00:10:03.10\00:10:09.20 Job, chapter 16. This is the King James Version. 00:10:09.23\00:10:13.06 Then Job answered and said, I have heard many such things: 00:10:13.09\00:10:19.25 miserable comforters are ye all. Shall vain words have an 00:10:19.28\00:10:24.46 end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest? 00:10:24.49\00:10:28.21 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's 00:10:28.24\00:10:33.58 stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head 00:10:33.61\00:10:37.06 at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth, 00:10:37.09\00:10:40.67 and the moving of my lips would assuage your grief. 00:10:40.70\00:10:43.02 Though I speak, my grief is not assuaged: and though I forbear, 00:10:43.05\00:10:49.99 what am I eased? But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made 00:10:50.02\00:10:56.90 desolate all my company. And thou hast filled me with 00:10:56.93\00:11:00.43 wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness 00:11:00.46\00:11:03.47 rising up in me beareth witness to my face. He teareth me 00:11:03.50\00:11:07.36 in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his 00:11:07.39\00:11:11.78 teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me. 00:11:11.81\00:11:14.60 They have gaped upon me with their mouth; 00:11:14.63\00:11:17.66 they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; 00:11:17.69\00:11:20.38 they have gathered themselves together against me. 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.28 God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over 00:11:23.31\00:11:27.27 into the hands of the wicked. I was at ease, but he hath 00:11:27.30\00:11:32.08 broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, 00:11:32.11\00:11:36.47 and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. 00:11:36.50\00:11:39.58 His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reigns 00:11:39.61\00:11:43.96 asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall 00:11:43.99\00:11:46.88 upon the ground. He breaketh me with breach upon breach, 00:11:46.91\00:11:49.55 he runneth upon me like a giant. I have sewed sackcloth 00:11:49.58\00:11:54.43 upon my skin and defiled my horn in the dust. 00:11:54.46\00:11:57.53 My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow 00:11:57.56\00:12:03.66 of death; not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is 00:12:03.69\00:12:09.67 pure. O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no 00:12:09.70\00:12:15.64 place. Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, 00:12:15.67\00:12:21.04 and my record is on high. My friends scorn me: 00:12:21.07\00:12:26.09 but mine eye poureth out tears unto God. 00:12:26.12\00:12:29.11 O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth 00:12:29.14\00:12:33.91 for his neighbor! When a few years are come, 00:12:33.94\00:12:36.98 then I shall go the way whence I shall not return. 00:12:37.01\00:12:41.31 Continuing in the book of Job, chapter 17, 00:12:41.34\00:12:45.00 This is the King James Version. My breath is corrupt, 00:12:45.03\00:12:49.07 my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me. 00:12:49.10\00:12:53.06 Are there not mockers with me? and doth not mine eye continue 00:12:53.09\00:12:57.58 in their provocation? Lay down now, 00:12:57.61\00:13:00.51 put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands 00:13:00.54\00:13:04.10 with me? For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: 00:13:04.13\00:13:07.02 therefore shalt thou not exalt them. 00:13:07.05\00:13:09.14 He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his 00:13:09.17\00:13:14.15 children shall fail. He hath made me also a byword 00:13:14.18\00:13:18.19 of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. 00:13:18.22\00:13:20.74 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, 00:13:20.77\00:13:24.75 and all my members are as a shadow. 00:13:24.78\00:13:27.70 Upright men shall be astonied at this, and the innocent 00:13:27.73\00:13:32.82 shall stir up himself against the hypocrite. 00:13:32.85\00:13:34.99 The righteous also shall hold on his way, 00:13:35.02\00:13:37.90 and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. 00:13:37.93\00:13:40.55 But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: 00:13:40.58\00:13:44.19 for I cannot find one wise man among you. 00:13:44.22\00:13:46.93 My days are past, my purposes are broken off, 00:13:46.96\00:13:50.81 even the thoughts of my heart. They change the night into day: 00:13:50.84\00:13:54.47 the light is short because of darkness. 00:13:54.50\00:13:56.14 If I wait, the grave is mine house: 00:13:56.17\00:13:58.92 I have made my bed in the darkness. 00:13:58.96\00:14:01.70 I have said to corruption, Thou art my father: 00:14:01.73\00:14:05.13 to the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister. 00:14:05.16\00:14:07.39 And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? 00:14:07.42\00:14:13.40 They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest 00:14:13.43\00:14:17.81 together is in the dust. - Thank you for joining with me 00:14:17.84\00:14:23.01 today to read this story of Job. And as we take these words 00:14:23.04\00:14:27.70 with us until we are together again, may the Holy Spirit 00:14:27.73\00:14:31.25 bring to our hearts the same conviction that Job had 00:14:31.28\00:14:33.84 that his trust in God remain no matter what happened. 00:14:33.87\00:14:37.75 Please come again and join me next time. Goodbye. 00:14:37.78\00:14:40.58
