Hello and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.25\00:00:17.23 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for coming apart with me 00:00:17.26\00:00:20.86 for a little time to sit and read the word of God together. 00:00:20.89\00:00:23.24 Let's pray before we start. Dear Father in heaven, 00:00:23.27\00:00:27.95 thank you for your word that strengthens our faith 00:00:27.98\00:00:31.94 and as we read today, the account of your servant, Job, 00:00:31.97\00:00:36.37 please change our hearts to understand and love you and 00:00:36.40\00:00:41.17 serve you like Job did, and to trust you no matter what may be 00:00:41.20\00:00:46.76 going on. And to stand firm. Thank you so much for loving us, 00:00:46.79\00:00:52.65 We love you. Amen. - We began the story of Job the last time 00:00:52.68\00:00:57.73 we were together. A man who was respected and wealthy, 00:00:57.76\00:01:01.73 seemed to have everything going right for him and loved the Lord 00:01:01.76\00:01:05.84 with all his heart. And Satan accused Job before God, and 00:01:05.87\00:01:09.11 said if you were to take away all that he has. If you were to 00:01:09.14\00:01:12.49 take away his health, he would curse you and die. And God 00:01:12.52\00:01:16.81 permitted Satan to come against Job. Nothing happened in Job's 00:01:16.84\00:01:22.54 life except that God gave the permission for it to happen. 00:01:22.57\00:01:25.07 And Satan came and destroyed all that Job had and afflicted him 00:01:25.10\00:01:29.51 with sores. His wife said to Job, Why don't you just curse 00:01:29.54\00:01:33.12 God and die. But Job said, would we take only good things from 00:01:33.15\00:01:37.50 the hand of the Lord, and not the bad as well? And in no way 00:01:37.53\00:01:42.82 did Job sin, no matter what the devil brought against him. 00:01:42.85\00:01:45.76 We're going to pick up the story now in Job, chapter 3. 00:01:45.79\00:01:49.35 His three friends have come to be with him, and when they 00:01:49.38\00:01:53.24 first see him, they are so overcome with what had happened 00:01:53.27\00:01:56.13 to him that the bible says they sit in silence with him 00:01:56.16\00:01:58.80 for 7 days. We pick up as Job is speaking and he is 00:01:58.83\00:02:03.34 cursing the day he was born. We're reading in Job, chapter 3, 00:02:03.37\00:02:07.48 beginning in verse 6. This is the King James Version. 00:02:07.51\00:02:11.00 As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be 00:02:11.03\00:02:17.57 joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the 00:02:17.60\00:02:21.21 number of the months. Lo, let that night be solitary, 00:02:21.24\00:02:24.53 let no joyful voice come therein. Let them curse it 00:02:24.56\00:02:29.48 that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning 00:02:29.52\00:02:32.63 Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; 00:02:32.66\00:02:35.56 let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the 00:02:35.59\00:02:39.62 dawning of the day: because it shut not up the doors of my 00:02:39.65\00:02:42.88 mother's womb, nor hid sorrow from mine eyes. Why died I not 00:02:42.91\00:02:48.42 from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came 00:02:48.45\00:02:52.52 out of the belly? Why did the knees prevent me? or why the 00:02:52.55\00:02:55.91 breasts that I should suck? For now should I have lain still 00:02:55.94\00:03:00.11 and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, 00:03:00.14\00:03:03.82 with kings and counselors of the earth, which built desolate 00:03:03.85\00:03:07.14 places for themselves; or with princes that had gold, 00:03:07.17\00:03:10.05 who filled their houses with silver: or as an hidden untimely 00:03:10.08\00:03:14.60 birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light. 00:03:14.63\00:03:18.32 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary 00:03:18.35\00:03:23.28 be at rest. There the prisoners rest together; they hear not 00:03:23.31\00:03:27.41 the voice of the oppressor. The small and great are there; 00:03:27.44\00:03:31.20 and the servant is free from his master. Wherefore is light given 00:03:31.23\00:03:36.11 to him that is in misery, and live unto the bitter in soul; 00:03:36.14\00:03:39.22 which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more 00:03:39.25\00:03:43.55 than for hid treasures; which rejoice exceedingly, and are 00:03:43.58\00:03:46.66 glad when they can find the grave? Why is light given to a 00:03:46.69\00:03:50.39 man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? 00:03:50.42\00:03:53.18 For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured 00:03:53.21\00:03:58.20 out like the waters. For the thing which I greatly feared is 00:03:58.23\00:04:01.29 come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. 00:04:01.32\00:04:04.02 I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; 00:04:04.05\00:04:09.00 yet trouble came. Continuing with Job, chapter 4, 00:04:09.03\00:04:15.56 and this is the King James Version. 00:04:15.59\00:04:16.79 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, If we assay 00:04:16.82\00:04:23.80 to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold 00:04:23.83\00:04:27.53 himself from speaking? Behold, thou hast instructed many, 00:04:27.56\00:04:31.67 and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. Thy words have 00:04:31.70\00:04:35.30 upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the 00:04:35.33\00:04:38.44 feeble knees. But now it is come upon thee, and thou 00:04:38.47\00:04:43.65 faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled. 00:04:43.68\00:04:46.63 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the 00:04:46.66\00:04:52.41 uprightness of thy ways? Remember, I pray thee, 00:04:52.44\00:04:56.11 whoever perished being innocent? or where were the righteous 00:04:56.14\00:05:01.16 cut off? Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow 00:05:01.19\00:05:07.62 wickedness, reap the same. By the blast of God they perish, 00:05:07.65\00:05:12.73 and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed. 00:05:12.76\00:05:15.66 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and 00:05:15.69\00:05:19.81 the teeth of the young lions, are broken. The old lion 00:05:19.84\00:05:23.51 perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are 00:05:23.54\00:05:27.48 scattered abroad. Now a thing was secretly brought to me, 00:05:27.51\00:05:32.06 and mine ear received a little thereof. In thoughts from the 00:05:32.09\00:05:36.45 visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men. 00:05:36.48\00:05:39.76 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my 00:05:39.79\00:05:42.91 bones to shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; 00:05:42.94\00:05:47.26 the hair of my flesh stood up: It stood still, but I could not 00:05:47.29\00:05:50.40 discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, 00:05:50.43\00:05:54.71 there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying, Shall mortal 00:05:54.74\00:06:00.55 man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his 00:06:00.58\00:06:06.05 maker? Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels 00:06:06.08\00:06:11.33 he charged with folly: How much less in them that dwell 00:06:11.36\00:06:15.10 in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, 00:06:15.13\00:06:17.93 which are crushed before the moth? They are destroyed from 00:06:17.96\00:06:22.11 morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding 00:06:22.14\00:06:25.66 it. Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? 00:06:25.69\00:06:29.78 they die, even without wisdom. Continuing in the book of Job 00:06:29.81\00:06:36.20 chapter 5. This is the King James Version. 00:06:36.23\00:06:38.12 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; 00:06:38.15\00:06:43.74 And to which of the saints wilt thou turn? For wrath killeth 00:06:43.77\00:06:47.96 the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. 00:06:47.99\00:06:50.47 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his 00:06:50.50\00:06:54.07 habitation. His children are far from safety and they are crushed 00:06:54.10\00:06:59.00 in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. 00:06:59.03\00:07:02.67 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of 00:07:02.70\00:07:07.33 the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance. 00:07:07.36\00:07:09.80 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth 00:07:09.83\00:07:13.73 trouble spring out of the ground; yet man is born 00:07:13.76\00:07:17.15 unto trouble as the sparks fly upward. I would seek unto God, 00:07:17.18\00:07:21.85 and unto God would I commit my cause: Which doeth great things 00:07:21.88\00:07:26.31 and unsearchable; marvelous things without number: 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.53 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the 00:07:29.56\00:07:33.69 fields: To set up on high those that be low; that those which 00:07:33.72\00:07:39.22 mourn may be exalted to safety. He disappointeth the devices 00:07:39.25\00:07:44.65 of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their 00:07:44.68\00:07:48.78 enterprise. He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: 00:07:48.81\00:07:52.94 and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. 00:07:52.97\00:07:55.32 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the 00:07:55.35\00:07:59.03 noon day as in the night. But he saveth the poor from the 00:07:59.06\00:08:03.69 sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. 00:08:03.72\00:08:07.05 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. 00:08:07.08\00:08:12.46 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore 00:08:12.49\00:08:18.50 despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: 00:08:18.53\00:08:22.80 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands 00:08:22.83\00:08:27.80 make whole. He shall deliver thee in six troubles: 00:08:27.83\00:08:31.18 yea in seven there shall no evil touch thee. 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.52 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the 00:08:34.55\00:08:40.42 power of the sword. Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.98 tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction 00:08:45.01\00:08:47.60 when it cometh. At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: 00:08:47.63\00:08:51.70 neither shalt thou be afraid of the beast of the earth. 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.53 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: 00:08:54.56\00:08:58.38 and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. 00:08:58.41\00:09:01.21 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; 00:09:01.24\00:09:05.67 and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. 00:09:05.70\00:09:09.04 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine 00:09:09.07\00:09:12.35 offspring as the grass of the earth. Thou shalt come to thy 00:09:12.38\00:09:14.85 grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in 00:09:14.88\00:09:19.45 in his season. Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, 00:09:19.48\00:09:26.13 and know thou it for thy good. Continuing to read in the book 00:09:26.16\00:09:32.18 of Job, chapter 6. This is the King James Version. 00:09:32.21\00:09:35.10 But Job answered and said, O that my grief were throughly 00:09:35.13\00:09:42.07 weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! 00:09:42.10\00:09:45.63 For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: 00:09:45.66\00:09:49.17 therefore my words are swallowed up. For the arrows of the 00:09:49.20\00:09:52.57 Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up 00:09:52.60\00:09:56.13 my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.77 me. Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox 00:09:59.80\00:10:04.21 over his fodder? Can that which is unsavory be eaten without 00:10:04.24\00:10:08.57 salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? 00:10:08.60\00:10:11.14 The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful 00:10:11.17\00:10:17.01 meat. Oh that I might have my request; and that God would 00:10:17.04\00:10:21.97 grant me the thing that I long for! Even that it would please 00:10:22.00\00:10:25.36 God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, 00:10:25.39\00:10:28.11 and cut me off! Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would 00:10:28.14\00:10:33.01 harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not 00:10:33.04\00:10:36.95 concealed the words of the Holy One. What is my strength, 00:10:36.98\00:10:41.20 that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong 00:10:41.23\00:10:44.83 my life? Is my strength the strength of stones? 00:10:44.86\00:10:48.34 or is my flesh of brass? Is not my help in me? and is wisdom 00:10:48.37\00:10:53.90 driven quite from me? To him that is afflicted pity should be 00:10:53.93\00:10:58.70 shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the 00:10:58.73\00:11:02.17 Almighty. My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as 00:11:02.20\00:11:07.27 the stream of brooks they pass away; which are blackish 00:11:07.30\00:11:11.06 by reason of the ice and wherein the snow is hid: What time they 00:11:11.09\00:11:15.09 wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out 00:11:15.12\00:11:19.52 of their place. The paths of their way are turned aside; 00:11:19.55\00:11:23.17 they go to nothing, and perish. The troops of Tema looked, 00:11:23.20\00:11:27.00 the companies of Sheba waited for them. They were confounded 00:11:27.03\00:11:31.41 because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed. 00:11:31.44\00:11:33.96 For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid. 00:11:33.99\00:11:39.18 Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your 00:11:39.21\00:11:44.27 substance? Or, Deliver me from the enemy's hand? 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.89 or redeem me from the hand of the mighty? Teach me, and I will 00:11:46.92\00:11:50.49 hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred. 00:11:50.52\00:11:54.96 How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing 00:11:54.99\00:11:59.71 reprove? Do ye imagine to reprove words, and the speeches 00:11:59.74\00:12:03.66 of one that is desperate, which are as wind? Yea, ye overwhelm 00:12:03.69\00:12:08.82 the fatherless, and ye dig a pit for your friend. Now therefore 00:12:08.85\00:12:12.52 be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie. 00:12:12.55\00:12:17.54 Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity; yea, return again, 00:12:17.57\00:12:22.65 my righteousness is in it. Is there iniquity in my tongue? 00:12:22.68\00:12:26.78 cannot my taste discern perverse things? 00:12:26.81\00:12:30.66 We're continuing to read in Job, chapter 7, 00:12:30.69\00:12:34.53 This is the King James Version. Is there not an appointed time 00:12:34.56\00:12:39.63 to man upon the earth? are not his days also like the days of 00:12:39.66\00:12:43.19 an hireling? As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, 00:12:43.22\00:12:47.31 and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work: 00:12:47.34\00:12:49.63 So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights 00:12:49.66\00:12:53.86 are appointed to me. When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, 00:12:53.89\00:12:58.58 and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro 00:12:58.61\00:13:03.02 unto the dawning of the day. My flesh is clothed with worms 00:13:03.05\00:13:08.19 and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome. 00:13:08.22\00:13:13.02 My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent 00:13:13.05\00:13:16.92 without hope. O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no 00:13:16.95\00:13:22.97 more see good. The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me 00:13:23.00\00:13:26.63 no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. As the cloud is 00:13:26.66\00:13:32.56 consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the 00:13:32.59\00:13:37.05 grave shall come up no more He shall return no more 00:13:37.08\00:13:40.19 to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.76 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the 00:13:42.79\00:13:46.57 anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness 00:13:46.60\00:13:49.72 of my soul. Am, I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch 00:13:49.75\00:13:54.82 over me? When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall 00:13:54.85\00:13:59.82 ease my complaint; then thou scarest me with dreams, 00:13:59.85\00:14:03.11 and terrifiest me through visions: So that my soul 00:14:03.14\00:14:06.52 chooseth strangling, and death rather than life. 00:14:06.55\00:14:09.45 I loath it; I would not live alway: let me alone: 00:14:09.48\00:14:13.66 for my days are vanity. What is man, that thou shouldest magnify 00:14:13.69\00:14:18.06 him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? 00:14:18.09\00:14:20.30 And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him 00:14:20.33\00:14:23.71 every moment? How long wilt thou not depart from me, 00:14:23.74\00:14:28.11 nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? I have sinned; 00:14:28.14\00:14:32.04 what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? 00:14:32.07\00:14:35.02 why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a 00:14:35.05\00:14:38.87 burden to myself? 00:14:38.90\00:14:40.92
